Stab victim tributes “I made a few phone calls and found out what happened.

“I had to sit down quietly by myself for 10 minutes and hold back my tears.

“It was just so surreal and I couldn’t believe it had happened.”

James said music and BMW cars were among Mr O’Donnell’s passions.

“He’d just bought a BMW race car. He did this because he wanted his mates to have something to do, not because he wanted to make any money,” he said.

“He was a great friend to me. He was always here for me and my family.

“I told him I was having trouble paying my rego a couple of months ago.

“I didn’t have to ask, he just handed me a couple of hundred dollars.

“He always helped people. I loved him, that’s for sure.”

James said Mr O’Donnell’s was from a big family and “was loved by all of them”.

In a death notice they thanked “all who have shown support and offered condolences”.

Mr O’Donnell’s funeral will be held in the Chapel of Reflection at Springvale Botanical Cemetery at 11.45am on Wednesday 29 June and he’ll be buried with his brother Michael.

Karl Lamblin, 32, of no fixed address was remanded until 13 October when he appeared at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Friday 24 June charged with murder.

Keysborough man Paul ‘Pod’ O’Donnell was a mentor and inspiration.

Family and friends have paid tribute to the 48-year-old father of three who died outside his factory in Olive Grove, Keysborough, on Saturday 18 June after being stabbed.

Mr O’Donnell’s friend of five years, James, told the Journal that he was a wonderful man.

“He was a mentor. Since Dad died, he’d always be giving me advice,” he said.

“And he was a very intelligent person. He always knew what he was talking about.

“He was an inspiration to everyone.”

James, who didn’t want his surname published,

said he still couldn’t believe his mate was gone.

“It’s always the best people that are taken away so soon,” he said.

“It’s not like he got sick and we had time to deal with it.

“One day he was here and then next he’s gone.

“It’s like a car accident but worse.”

James last saw him on Sunday 12 June.

“He was happy. Pod was always happy,” he said.

His wife woke him on Sunday morning after spotting Mr O’Donnell’s mechanic workshop on the news.

“I’d tried to call him the night before, about 9pm, and he didn’t answer,” James said.

“I left a message and he never called me back.

Nina Kelly is looking forward to hopping on the first bus on the new Keysborough South route on Sunday 28 August.

“The long 2.5 kilometre walk is over,” the Keysborough South Action Group spokeswoman said.

“This bus means the community is no longer isolated and it opens up access to essential infrastructure, plus further opportunity to education and employment opportunities.”

Keysborough MP Martin Pakula announced the start date and a 30-minute frequency for the service on Monday 20 June.

The original proposal was for a 40 minute service, but Mr Pakula saud community feedback prompted the change.

Ms Kelly was pleasantly surprised.

“The increased frequency down to every 30 minutes means that community can become less

car-dependent and connect to both Dandenong and Frankston lines,” she said.

The new Route 709 will run from Noble Park Station to Mordialloc Station via Keylana Drive, Westwood Boulevard and Perry Road in Keysborough South, and Bloomfield Road in Noble Park.

It will connect local passengers to the Frankston and Dandenong train lines, and the Route 902 Smart Bus on Springvale Road, as well as providing residents south of Cheltenham Road with a connection to Parkmore Shopping Centre.

On weekdays the bus will run every 30 minutes between 6am and 7pm and every hour from 7pm to around 9pm. On Saturdays, services will run every half-hour from 7am to 7pm and every hour until 9pm. Sunday services will start at 8.30am and run every 30 minutes until 7pm, then every hour until 9pm.

Greater Dandenong Councillor Matthew Kirwan was also pleased at the increased frequency but said it wasn’t enough.

“When frequency comes up, the common reaction is that unless it is at least 30 minutes that they won’t consider using it and instead will rely on their car or stay at home,” he said.

“Starting with a frequency of at least every 20 minutes would have been a better approach and also extending it on weeknights until 8pm.

“The more frequent the service, the more the parking issues at Noble Park Railway Station and Mordialloc station are lessened.

“Many of the residents in the new estates have professional jobs in the CBD meaning that they work long hours and don’t leave the city until late.”

Cr Kirwan said the sooner there was another route that included the new shopping centre at Hutton and Chapel roads - “and also uses the already built bus stops at the south end of Perry Road” - the better.

“Linkage to Dandenong South is also important - many residents in this area have office jobs in Dandenong South,” he said.

Figaro's student singers are perfect opera marriage

By CASEY NEILL Dandenong North students will add their voices to an Opera Australia national premiere.

The 21 children from Wooranna Park Primary will join professional singers on stage in The Marriage of Figaro, which will hit the Drum Theatre stage on Friday 15 and Saturday 16 July.

They’re part of Opera Australia’s Regional Children’s Chorus Program and have been rehearsing a couple of times a week.

Choir leader Marianna Doherty, assisted by Megan van der Velden, held auditions to choose the singers, aged nine to 13.

“They’re going to be performing with professional performers and an orchestra,” she said.

“They’ve worked really hard learning the material.

“They’ve been practicing at home.

“It’s a really wonderful opportunity for our kids.

“It’s more than the musical skills that they learn. It really helps with their confidence and their self-esteem.”

Ms Doherty said their participation was introducing the students to Mozart, classical music and opera.

“They’re singing in four pieces,” she said.

“I’m going to be backstage looking out for them. I’m going to be very proud.”

The Drum Theatre will host the first performance of The Marriage of Figaro’s Australian tour.

The comical Mozart opera follows a Seville household’s adventures during one crazy day.

Figaro is marrying Susanna but the Count wants to seduce her first. Marcellina wants Figaro and the Countess just wants her husband back.

It’s described as the Downton Abbey of opera - but more fun - and award-winning creative duo Michael Gow and Robert Kemp created this new production. Drum Theatre director Greg Hordacre said it was an ideal introduction for anyone who was curious about opera.

“The production is of the highest calibre, affordably priced and presented in English,” he said.

“We promise an entertaining, funny and accessible night out for the whole family.”

The Drum Theatre is at Lonsdale and Walker streets, Dandenong, and will host The Marriage of Figaro at 7.30pm on Friday 15 and Saturday 16 July.

Two men leave site of ute arson Vandals torched a ute in a Dandenong laneway.

Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Senior Constable Nic Hayes said the suspects drove the Ford ute into the alley off Brooklyn Avenue about 3.50am on Wednesday 8 June before setting it alight. A witness spotted the fire from his home on the other side of Dandenong Creek and called triple-zero.

The CFA attended and extinguished the blaze.

Det Sen Const Hayes said security footage obtained from the area showed two men leaving the scene.

Police are appealing to help from the public to find those responsible for a street robbery in Noble Park on Wednesday 22 June.

The victim, who was studying photography, was taking photos with a new camera about 3.10pm as he walked home from Yarraman train station.

Police said a man approached from behind and grabbed the camera and a Louis Vuitton bag the victim was carrying over his shoulder.

He tried to hold onto his bag but a second man put his hands over the victim’s face and pulled him to the ground.

They both left in a white car.

The first man was thought to be Caucasian and aged between 20 and 30 years with a skinny build and blond or greying hair.

The second man was perceived to be of Asian appearance with a medium build and short dark hair, and was shorter than the first man.

Police are urging witnesses to come forward.

The former City of Springvale’s last mayor Eric Mitchell has died.

The City of Greater Dandenong will fly its flags at half-mast on Monday 27 June in his honour.

He passed away peacefully on Saturday 18 June after a brief illness, aged 88.

Mr Mitchell was a City of Springvale councillor from 1991 until amalgamations in 1994, was the Westall Primary School principal from 1980 to 1987 and was president of the Noble Park English Language School council for more than 20 years.

Mr Mitchell and his wife Merle have lived in Greater Dandenong since 1961 and both made significant contributions to the area.

Two witnesses to a Dandenong bottle-attack and robbery are being urged to come forward to help police.

Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Senior Constable Nic Hayes said the victim, a 40-year-old man, was sitting on a Lonsdale Street bench about 9pm on Monday 30 May when a man approached.

He demanded the victim’s phone, police allege, and struck the back of his head with a heavy backpack. The victim tried to flee but tripped over on the road.

Sen Const Hayes said the alleged attacker then hit the victim with a bottle and stole some of his belongings.

Police have since arrested a 24-year-old man over the incident.

It’s believed the victim asked people who were in the street at the time to help or call police.

“This is a call for those two witnesses to come forward to assist,” Sen Const Hayes said.

Looking Back 100 years ago 29 June 1916 Dandenong Telephone Exchange The local telephone exchange is gradually, but surely, growing into a position of first importance, south of Melbourne, as a country exchange.

It is understood with the extension of the service on Stud Road, approximately 80 subscribers will be in the service, from present indications, by August.

The suggestion from the department to relinquish the all-night continuous service, to which Dandenong is entitled, should be answered by a flat refusal contained in a document addressed to the department and signed by individual subscribers.

The head of Dandenong’s Traffic Operations Group, Senior Sergeant Ken Dunlop, released the district’s top 20 black spots last week.

The intersection of Princes Highway and South Eastern Freeway at Doveton outside Freeway Sport was top of the danger list.

Police have recorded 123 collisions there between 1989 and 1995.

In 2005 he suffered - as he described it - a massive breakdown losing everything he held dear. David saw an advertisement in the Journal stating that the Keysborough Men’s Shed was looking for new members.

“I popped down one day and ever since it’s been great. I live by myself and it gets lonely.

Every time I look out the window, I think ‘what the hell am I going to do’.

“The shed saved my life for sure. I’ve got a lot of friends out of this place, good company, and things to do.”

I signed up to help my fellow man

By JOSEPH DE SOUZA I emigrated from India to Australia in 1966 and became an Australian citizen in 1967.

Wanting to put back something into the country that was now my home, I involved myself in the community, first at the Springvale Youth Club where I served as secretary and president.

I was also on the committee of management at the Noble Park Centre for the Intellectually Handicapped.

To help a wider section of the community, I applied for and became a Commissioner for taking declarations and affidavits.

At the instigation of Bob Luxford - then City of Springvale Mayor - and on the recommendation of local MP Norm Billings, I requested an appointment as a Justice of the Peace.

On 15 February 1977 I was sworn in as a Justice of the Peace and for the first 30 or more years my JP duties were from home and at my workplace.

When the new Springvale police station needed JPs on the roster of the document signing station (DSS) I volunteered.

The number and diversity of documents being presented in recent times will be an eye-opener to Justices who have not spent time at DSSs. As a JP I have an administrative role involving attesting to the execution of documents such as divorce proceedings, applications for immigration, passports, proof of age and others too numerous to mention here.

I am sworn to conform to the Justices’ code of conduct. This ensures that I act with due care, dil-

igence, integrity, respect, independence, impartiality and without prejudice or discrimination.

In 2010 I became the roster co-ordinator, which means I maintain a weekly/monthly roster of 14 JPs, act as the liaison between the Honorary Justice Office, Department of Justice and themselves, ensure that they are in touch with new legislation, follow changed procedures, and more.

We work three shifts a day for a total of 40 hours per week helping police officers to perform duties more in keeping with police work.

Being a JP brings an immense sense of achievement and self-satisfaction, secure in the knowledge and belief that I am providing an essential service without thought of reward or recompense to the members of the community in which I live.

My motivation is that I am helping others who are in desperate and urgent need of my assistance and, therefore, I have never, nor will I ever refuse my services to anyone who needs it.

Hopefully one day my epitaph will read “He loved his fellow man”.

Dandenong police station, which serves more clients than we do, has about 25 rostered Justices.

Both DDSs are undermanned and constantly trying to recruit registered JPs to help.

However, although there are 130 or more justices registered within the City of Greater Dandenong both stations have had little or no success.

The Department of Justice and Regulation recently forwarded a letter to Justices seeking expressions of interests from JPs to join the signing centres and to that I add the earnest plea of the Dandenong co-ordinator and myself.

If they only work from home or their office they will not get sufficient experience to deal with new procedures and documents affected by recent legislation, and if they were to join a DSS they will be most surprised at the amount of different documents we deal with on a daily basis.

The neighbour was approached by Rozmaric’s mother and accused the victim of punching her son.

As the victim turned to her, he was struck in the eye by either an object or a fist apparently wielded by Rozmaric.

The victim, with a seriously swollen eye, ran into his house and locked the door.

Rozmaric later made partial admissions to Dandenong police that he kicked the neighbour in the groin to “get his attention”.

The accused was also charged over being found with illicit drugs after banging on windows and throwing objects at passers-by on Cheltenham Road, Dandenong, in February.

In July 2014, he sat in the back of a brokendown unregistered Holden without number plates, blocking a lane on the intersection of Thompsons Road and South Gippsland Highway.

Defence lawyer Arend Slink argued a jail term plus a corrections order would help Rozmaric’s rehabilitation prospects. Several offences were related to drug use.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted Rozmaric was a “serious violent offender” with several priors for threatening to kill and assaulting people, but hadn’t been in trouble for “quite some time”.

Mr Vandersteen advised Rozmaric not to return to the residence next to the victim.

“Your family, employment and mental health are what you need to concentrate on.”

Rozmaric accepted an indication of three months' jail and 12-month community corrections order in exchange for pleading guilty to charges including recklessly causing injury, assault and threatening to kill.

His corrections order includes drug and mental health programs.

He was convicted and fined $500 on three counts of cannabis possession.

A man has been jailed after bashing his neighbour in his driveway as well as threatening to kill the victim, the victim’s wife and pet.

Karl Rozmaric denied some of the alleged “utterances” and the “nature of the assault as described” but pleaded guilty at a Dandenong Magistrates’ Court sentence indication hearing on 20 June.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Chris Capuano told the court that a male neighbour reported Rozmaric screaming and ranting in their shared driveway on 2 June.

As the neighbour remained his house, the accused pointed at the neighbour and called him a “dog”, the court was told.

Police said Rozmaric then threatened to rape the neighbour’s wife in front of the neighbour, and to kill the couple and their cat.

That afternoon, the neighbour was confronted outside at close-range by Rozmaric.

Bangholme’s Riverend Road businesses say the precinct desperately needs a $3.44 million infrastructure upgrade - and they can cover the bill.

The newly-formed River End Business Community said the tax revenue it would generate from new wages alone would more than pay for the proposal for roads, public transport connections and footpaths that it presented to the ALP and Liberal candidates for Isaacs ahead of the Saturday 2 July federal election.

Spokesman Ian Clark from Melbourne Cable Park said Mark Dreyfus and Garry Spencer were both “extremely supportive of the need for this funding and were excited by the opportunities it presents”.

“We are confident they will be able to show their Canberra colleagues the urgent need for our community development funding but also the importance of investing in local jobs in Isaacs,” he said.

The River End Business Community is focussed on developing and promoting the precinct which includes Craft and Co Farm, Cornish College, Nine Dragons Horse Club and Melbourne Cable Park.

Mr Clark said they would be making a combined $15 million-plus investment and creating about 180 new jobs.

“The flow-on effects of this are huge,” he said.

“All of these businesses are privately funded and none are seeking any government assistance with their specific business operations.

“We are, however, struggling with the constant lack of investment in failing local infrastructure in the area.”

They’re asking the Federal Government to provide $3.44 million to Greater Dandenong Council and the State Government “fully funded from the additional tax revenues that our investment is creating”.

Mr Clark said economic impact assessments from the Greater Dandenong and Frankston councils found the businesses would create about $30 million in wages in 12 months, which would generate more than $7.6 million in tax revenue.

Dandenong’s Hazara community celebrated Refugee Week with music, dancing - and a word from the Bruce electorate’s candidates ahead of the Saturday 2 July federal election.

Refugee Council of Australia-appointed Refugee Week ambassador and Omid Cultural Association president Hayatullah Rahimi organised the Sunday 19 June event at the Russian Community Centre in Dandenong South.

Ramadan has food in the fast lane

By CASEY NEILL An Afghan feast forged community connections and marked the Muslim holy month.

Life Without Barriers’ National Immigration Support Service (NISS) in Dandenong hosted an iftar dinner for about 200 people on Thursday 16 June.

Iftar is a post-sunset meal when Muslims end their daily Ramadan fast during the ninth month in the Islamic calendar and the religion’s followers consume no food or water from dawn to sunset for the 30 days.

They also pray and refrain from smoking, bad behaviour and impure thoughts.

Life Without Barriers held the celebration in partnership with the National Zakat Foundation.

Guests included families and children, single adults, guests from the National Zakat Foundation and Life Without Barriers staff.

The event started at 5pm with a recitation from the Quran, an acknowledgment of country, a welcome address from Life Without Barriers operations manager Peter Singh and a speech from National Zakat Foundation’s Jenny Salahi.

Life Without Barriers is a non-profit organisation working in more than 300 communities across Australia.

It delivers services in the areas of disability, out-of-home care, aged care, mental health and support for refugee and asylum seekers.

It also supports homeless people and youth involved with the justice system.

I think the attempt to celebrate ‘Carmen’s’ feeling comfortable in her own body has overlooked a much bigger message.

Firstly let me say I am not looking down on Carmen and I also recognise the complexity of prostitution and her story is in the context of a legal brothel.

However, there is a current rise in street prostitution in Dandenong.

The risks for young women and effects on their lives are enormous.

This article does not clearly make the differentiation between brothel or street prostitution and celebrates the profession.

Carmen’s attempts to normalise it is unsubstantiated and dangerous. She guaran-

tees more than half my friends visit a brothel!

Prostitution in my view is objectification of women and it dehumanises women - this is the bigger story in Dandenong.

This article is written in the tone of good news - ‘prostitution is good’. My interpretation: Men, come use our service, women, it’s OK to sell your body.

A balanced article would include some dangers of the work.

St Kilda Gatehouse is a not for profit organisation working with street workers in Dandenong and see the damage this work has on these women.

Perhaps the Journal could report the good news stories of how they have helped many young women out of the work!

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS An ice addict violently attacked his female expartner in Warneet and Dandenong - on one occasion over her dropping a hair-gel container.

The 22-year-old Dandenong man shouted at the woman at his home on 7 May after she accidentally dropped the hair gel and disturbed the man’s housemate, a Dandenong Magistrates’ Court sentence indication hearing was told.

As the victim walked away outside the house, the man kicked her leg from behind and caused her to fall.

A neighbour, who saw the man choking the victim and slamming her against a fence, told the man to let her go and came to her aid.

Attending police were told by the victim that the man strangled her “hard” and thought he was going to kill her.

“He’d done it in the past but this is worse,” she said.

The court was told the man was found with a white tablet in a zip-lock plastic bag and a Swiss knife.

He denied choking the woman when questioned by police at the time.

Police had also charged the man, who grabbed and wrestled with his victim as she tried to leave his car on 3 April in Warneet. The fight left her with a bruised arm.

Defence lawyer Nadine Daniel told the court on 20 June that the man had been engaged to his ex-partner up until he relapsed into ice use in February.

Ms Daniel said the “remorseful” man had credited the victim for “saving his life” and helping him recover from heavy ice addiction two years ago.

“She is the last person you’d want to turn on.

“If you don’t address (this) properly... the chances of her being a victim of homicide at your hands increases significantly.”

Mr Vandersteen took into account a lack of prior family violence reports, though noting the accused was non-compliant with court orders by driving disqualified in January.

The man received a community corrections order after agreeing to plead guilty to the charges.

By CASEY NEILL Sign up to serve up a meal to promote community connectedness in Greater Dandenong.

Dandenong’s Wafaa Beaini is an ambassador for the Welcome Dinner Project (WDP), launched by charity joiningthedots in 2013.

The WDP helps newly arrived and established Australians to organise and host dinners in their own homes, and occasionally in community settings.

“Food is used as a vehicle to bring people from different walks of life together to share their traditional or favourite food and enjoy meaningful conversations,” Ms Beaini said.

“By doing so, the WDP is enabling people in our community to feel connected and establish relationships in a safe and friendly environment where everyone can feel respected and included.”

She said the project was in its early stages in Greater Dandenong.

“But we have already had success in hosting a small lunch in Noble Park,” she said.

“With more than 50 per cent of our population

coming from non-English speaking communities, what better place is there to host these dinners and make people feel welcome.”

Ms Beaini encouraged people in Greater Dandenong to register for the project, so it could grow.

More than 160 Welcome Dinners have been held across Australia since the first meal in Sydney.

About 300 trained Welcome Dinner facilitators across Australia have helped more than 3500 people to share a meal.

WDP is fund-raising to employ more staff and forging partnerships to make the project more sustainable.

It’s the primary project of non-profit organisation joiningthedots.

Its aim is to create opportunities to foster positive relationships between community members and promote shifts in perception and values to create more connected, peaceful.

Rotarians recognise their gems

By CASEY NEILL Dandenong Rotarians donated more than $4000 to drive positive change in the world in honour of three dedicated members.

Club president Susan Collier announced a Paul Harris Fellowship and two double sapphire presentations at its annual changeover dinner at the St John’s Regional College Graduate Restaurant in Dandenong on Wednesday 22 June.

But this year wasn’t so much a “changeover” as a “business as usual”.

Ms Collier will stay on in the lead role, the first person in club history to serve two successive terms as president.

“I hope that I live up to your expectations,” she said.

District Governor Don Ripper helped her with the presentation of a Paul Harris Fellowship to Irene Cantwell and double sapphire pins to John Grennan and Don Thompson.

He explained that the club donated US $1000 to the Rotary Foundation for each honour, which will be used for humanitarian and educational programs.

Mr Thompson is nearly 90 years old and is retiring from the club after more than 36 years of service.

“I don’t think that I warrant a second sapphire in front of a number of other Rotarians, who I believe have done greater service and put more effort into this club than I have,” he said.

“In retiring I thought somebody might say ‘goodbye Don, it’s been nice to know you’ and left it at that.

“But to get a second sapphire on my Paul Harris Fellowship is something really special.”

Mr Grennan interrupted Ms Collier as she started to read the second citation, and looked very bashful as he realised the nod was for him.

“Are you embarrassed now that you heckled me 30 seconds ago?” Ms Collier asked.

Head bowed, Mr Grennan replied with a meek “yes”.

“I’ve never heard this double sapphire thing.

Thank you very much indeed and I do appreciate it very much,” he said.

Ms Cantwell’s involvement with the club has been as a non-member alongside her husband Don. “I’m very proud to be associated with such a wonderful organisation,” she said.

“We help so many people locally, nationally and internationally.”

She explained that a $400 sponsorship paid for a prosthetic hand. The Cantwells secured support for 30.

“That means 30 lives that have been changed,” Ms Collier said.

The donors had the opportunity to assemble the hand, to be sent overseas to landmine victims.

Ms Collier said the project helped people to

regain independence and confidence, and had built interest in the club’s corporate membership program.

In the past year the club also participated in the Greater Dandenong Relay for Life in October, Cinema Under the Stars in Tirhatuan Park in Dandenong North in March with City of Greater Dandenong, barbecues and other events.

Economic arguments to continue the trade are flawed since this trade constitutes a mere 3.7 per cent of agriculture exports and contributes just 0.6 per cent to Australia’s total exports. Transport: We need to cut congestion which is why a re-elected Turnbull Liberal Government will invest $500 million to widen the Monash and $75 million to tackle urban congestion hotspots.

As an MP I will fight Labor’s plans to remove South Yarra and Richmond stations from the Dandenong line. Will also substantially improve Thompsons Road and accelerate building the Mordialloc bypass.

Negative gearing: The majority of Australians who use negative gearing are middle income and around two thirds have a taxable income of less than $80,000. I will fight to stop Labor’s attack on those trying to get ahead.

Medicare: Medicare funding is at record levels and Labor admits bulk-billing rates have never been higher than they are under the Liberals.

Other election issues: Isaacs needs a full-time MP who is not embarrassed to live in the community he represents. My key priorities are to see jobs created, to tackle the scourge of ice and drive crime down.

High-vis race to the top

By CASEY NEILL “Australia needs to see Australians making things,” Opposition Leader Bill Shorten told Dandenong workers on Tuesday.

He spent almost an hour at train and tram manufacturer Bombardier Transportation on 21 June, touring the facility and checking out the vehicles under construction.

“I’ve been in before, but I’m impressed,” he said.

He told one worker: “We won’t let you down, we just need your help on 2 July.”

There was a light-hearted break from Mr Shorten’s campaign tour when comedian Peter Helliar, who was travelling on Mr Shorten’s camping bus to report for Channel 10 television show The Project, challenged the aspiring prime minister to see who could don their safety vest fastest before they they began their visit.

Mr Shorten won, 13 seconds to 18 seconds.

Once inside Bombardier Mr Shorten gave a 10-minute address to staff in the lunch room, unveiling Labor’s Positive Policy for Victoria document.

He said it explained the practical benefits for Victorians who voted Labor at the Saturday 2 July federal election.

A huge round of applause and cheers rang out when he pledged that one in every 10 people employed on public infrastructure projects under an ALP government would be an apprentice.

“You go to work every day, you do highlyskilled work,” he said.

“I think Australians would be surprised to learn that you can turn around a tram carriage in five days.

Bombardier is in the running to build the State Government order for 65 seven-carriage sets for the high-capacity rail project.

It will find out if it’s successful later this year.

Bombardier Transportation Australian managing director Rene Lalande, Isaacs MP Mark Dreyfus, Opposition Leader Bill Shorten and ALP Bruce candidate Julian Hill.

“I think Australians seem to think that our manufacturing days were in the past.

“They’ve also got a very smoke-stack view of it - why on earth would young people ever want to go into it?

“These are good jobs - it’s not just blue-collar jobs, it’s design jobs.

“You make this a centre of manufacturing excellence and we can do well in the region.”

The Journal asked Mr Shorten what the contract would mean not only to Bombardier, but to other suppliers in the region.

Medicare: The backbone of Australian healthcare that has suffered cut after cut by the Liberals over the past three years, pushing up the cost to see your doctor or get a routine health check.

Only Labor will restore essential funding to Medicare to retain bulk billing and keep costs down.

Other election issues: Local jobs. The Liberals’ refusal to support Australian manufacturing has seen job opportunities in Greater Dandenong fall, hurting local families. Labor believes in local jobs and I will fight for local opportunities for Dandenong residents.

Why vote for you: Because I will be your voice in Parliament for better schools, better healthcare and local jobs. The Liberals just cut and give tax breaks to big business.

Church to rise under Liberals St Mary’s Parish Church in Dandenong would receive $500,000 to “build a new beginning” under a Coalition Government.

This was among three funding pledges Bruce Liberal candidate Helen Kroger unveiled last week. On 1 April last year, vandals lit two fires inside St Mary’s that caused extensive damage.

Ms Kroger said the church was “central to the social fabric of our local community”.

“Local families, schools and the diverse multicultural community that makes up your parish will build a new beginning and thrive well into the future with this vital investment,” she said to Fr O’Brien on Thursday 23 June.

Earlier that day, Ms Kroger announced that two Noble Park North streets would share $755,000 in safety upgrades under a Coalition Government.

Oakwood Avenue would receive splitter islands and blisters between Gladstone and Elonera roads at a cost of $453,000, and $302,000 would pay for the same on Halton Road, between Gladstone and Jacksons roads.

On Monday 20 June, Ms Kroger pledged $100,000 from the Safer Communities Fund to buy a relocatable CCTV camera system for areas Victoria Police identified.

The locations are Licola Crescent in Dandenong South; Hemmings Park, Fotheringham Reserve and Greaves Reserve in Dandenong; Mills Reserve and the Ian Street shopping strip in Noble Park and Tirhatuan Park in Dandenong North.

By JARROD POTTER EFL - ROUND 11 Taking two massive wins out of its recent three rounds, Noble Park has put itself right in the premiership mix after knocking over high-flying Rowville by 31 points.

Given a hellacious three-week block - facing top sides Balwyn, Vermont and Rowville on the trot - Noble Park didn’t give an inch.

After they beat Balwyn and went down gallantly to Vermont in a three-point loss the week before - it set the stage for another massive moment on Saturday and the Bulls delivered in the end.

As usual in 2016, it all started from the backhalf. Playing his way into another best afield performance, roaming defender Brett Dore clunked 14 contested marks and proved unstoppable across the skies.

Whether planned or unplanned, Rowville left Dore unmanned for most of the game and allowed him to get across to support the likes of Ryan Morrison, Liam Tobin and Trent Robertson.

Morrison was amazing on the dangerous Daniel Archer and racked up 31 touches from full back as the key defenders stood tall.

That ironclad defence let the midfield and forward end shine as Kyle Martin, Craig Anderson and Tim Kelly set up plenty of attacking footy.

The revolving forward line had enough of the pill - as the likes of Vergim Faik, Taylor Joyce, Tim Harper and Piva Wright each slotted two goals but it wasn’t completely rosy up forward.

Despite two emphatic terms through the midst of the match, Noble Park’s kicking let them down to spray eight behinds in the third and leave the door ajar for a Rowville revival.

By JARROD POTTER NPL VICTORIA - ROUND 18 Repelling the Western invasion, Dandenong City savoured a 3-0 success over Moreland Zebras.

In what looked on paper to be a fairly tight tussle between two sides near the top of their respective ladders, City made it clear the East is the conference to beat with a clinical dissection of the Moreland defence from the get-go.

Ross Frame (6’) opened the accounts quickly and from there neither side really roused much advantage until after half-time ... but from then on it was a one-way spree. Dandenong City put the sword to the Zebras quickly and emphatically after the resumption. Played in brilliantly by a Keegan Ziada chip, Amir Osmancevic opened up on the wrong foot and slotted a cracking lowstrike to double the margin before sealing the game soon after with his second.

If anything Dandenong City could have blown the result out even further as chance after chance came and went unrewarded in the last 20 minutes as Ziada, Osmancevic and Gonzalo Freddi kept the pressure up.

Coach Aaron Healey was thrilled with the performances Osmancevic, Frame and captain John Carroll in the back half, while Lewis Foster and David Morovic also earned his kudos after their great work off the bench.

But all told Healey was impressed with the team-wide exceptional effort.

“I think this game today was one of the most complete performances we’ve put in this season - I don’t think we had a poor player on the park,” Healey said. “Had 14-15 contributors and that’s what you need to have - unfortunately we haven’t had that consistently enough throughout the season.”

It leaves Dandenong City still a mathematical chance to catch second place Kingston City and attempt to make the NPL play-off matches and keep promotion hopes alive.

TAC CUP - ROUND 11 Besieged by Cannon-fire all day, there was not much Dandenong could muster in its 59-point defeat against Calder on Saturday.

From the first bounce the visitors seized the game and left the Rays battling for every possession.

Dandenong’s greatest enemy at first was itself though - poor kicking, lacklustre efforts in the contest and giving the ball back constantly gave Calder a free pass to run up the scoreboard in the opening term.

Cannons’ forward Karl Brown - fresh off a stint in Vic Metro - made his case for state-level reinstatement as he terrorised the Stingrays’ defence with a seven-goal haul. It got worse for Dandenong beyond the burgeoning margin though; Aiden Bonar - in his return to the side after overcoming an ACL reconstruction last season - looked to have re-ruptured the ligament in the second term and when Ryan Gains went down with a concussion, it left only a few fit on the Rays’ bench.

There were brief signs of revival throughout the on-field disaster; Danny Allsop (four goals) made a dent in the Calder defence while Tom Murphy and Kyle Beveridge battled it out for contested grabs.

Mitch hitches Vic Country ride

By JARROD POTTER Bouncing back from a disappointing 2015, Beaconsfield under-16s midfielder Mitch Riordan primed himself for a bigger and better 2016 campaign ... now including Vic Country duties.

Riordan, 16, from Berwick, sustained a niggling foot injury in a trial match that ruled him out of representing the School Sport Victoria side for a second time early last year.

It dogged him throughout most of last year, and it was something he wanted to put behind him quickly this year.

“I was injured in a trial game last year, and I was pretty disappointed not making last year’s team, but everyone stuck around me and gave me confidence to believe in myself,” Riordan said.

“That was my foot - it was a bone injury and not 100 per cent what it was - but didn’t get to play at full potential last year.

“I was out for four weeks and that was the start of the season and didn’t get back up to playing at full strength for the whole of the year - but went away, had a strong pre-season with the 16s and reaping the rewards.”

The Dandenong Stingrays’ prospect put injury frustrations aside as he finished the year as best he could as he played in a glorious South East Juniors under-15s premiership - a thrilling two-point win over Berwick.

He set himself for a monster pre-season as he prepared for life in the Beaconsfield and Haileybury jumpers.

“I was pretty excited about it - told us a couple of weeks ago at VISY Park and it was pretty nerve-wracking, “Everyone is in a room together and then they have an interview with you and tell you if you’re in our out - but when I was told I was very relieved and happy.”

“At school I play backline - running off the half back line - but in my own age level I play in the midfield but I love the midfield ... I’ll be playing in the midfield pretty much the whole carnival.”

Scully’s a Giant as wandering days come to an end

By JARROD POTTER There has been a whirlwind start to AFL life for Berwick football prodigy Tom Scully.

He quickly went from Melbourne’s number one draft pick and hopeful for its future becoming a foundation player when Scully, 25, switched to Greater Western Sydney in 2012.

But with his pledge to stick by the Giants, in the form of a four-year contract extension allegedly on a greatly reduced salary, the former Dandenong Stingrays midfielder made it clear that his days of club-switching were done.

Already signed until the end of 2017, Scully’s new deal will see the wingman remain in Western Sydney until at least the end of 2021 when he will be a 30-year-old veteran.

Scully is enjoying renewed confidence in 2016, averaging almost 24 possessions and kicking 15 goals through the first 13 rounds.

“Really excited about my decision to obviously resign - it was a pretty easy one,” Scully said in an interview on GWSGiants.com.au - “Came up here five years ago knowing I was going to be here for a long time but knowing I’m going to be on for and extra four years is exciting.

“The footy club is going in a really strong direction and I can’t wait to be part of the future here.

“It’s a bit of peace of mind I guess - I know where my future is and I can focus on playing football and that’s what I like to do - just coming to work every day trying to improve.”

Giants General Manager Football Wayne Campbell said Scully’s long-term extension was a reflection of his desire to stay around beyond his first contract.

“The club invested in Tom when he first signed with the Giants and now he’s investing heavily in the club by signing this long-term extension,” Campbell said. “He’s been here through some challenging times but he has never wavered from setting the highest of standards with his preparation, training and work rate.”

Just hours before the Big Freeze 2 at the MCG recently, Casey business P3 held its own ‘Little Freeze’.

Former St Kilda star and Narre Warren and Beaconsfield coach Aussie Jones runs P3 Sports and Recovery in Berwick alongside great mate and two-time premiership winning coach with Cora Lynn Travis Marsham.

The pair held the first ever Little Freeze in honour of P3’s new swim instructor Paula Olsson whose husband suffers from motor neurone disease.

After listening to Neale Daniher’s story on the radio on the way into work recently, Marsham - together with Jones - was inspired to act.

They made use of the facilities already at P3 - such as its ice bath - for the event.

It was only $100 per nomination, plus a gold coin donation for anyone who wanted to come along and watch.

All the money went straight to the Cure for MND Foundation, just like the Big Freeze at the MCG. A big crowd gathered to watch, with Jones, local identity Frank Welburn, former Essendon player and St Kilda recruit Jake Carlisle, and Doveton favourite son and Australian fast bowler James Pattinson just a few of those who took the plunge.

Marsham said he hopes the Little Freeze becomes an annual event, with the aim of making next year’s version even bigger and better.

All up, $1900 was raised at Monday’s event, which was then matched dollar-fordollar by the Federal Government.

By JARROD POTTER ONE season at Florida State University was enough for Dandenong Rangers point guard Rachel Antoniadou.

Antoniadou, 20, from Ripplebrook, took on a student-athlete opportunity at the Seminoles over the last year and played her part in the team’s great successes in 2015/16.

As a freshman guard her time on court was limited, but in her 21 games she fought for every minute and earned them all.

Her last match - the Sweet 16 clash against Baylor - saw her Seminoles bow out of the national tournament 58-78.

But with those last few seconds on court, it wasn’t everything she wanted it to be ... so her first year as a Seminole also becomes her last.

“It was pretty good, being overseas was definitely an experience,” Antoniadou said.

“I didn’t really find it up to what I wanted it to be - it was very intense.

Even though college is now in her rear-view mirror now, she doesn’t regret a second of it.

“I would say go with your gut instinct and don’t regret anything at all - I don’t 'cause it’s such a great opportunity and experience,” Antoniadou said.

“Just because it doesn’t work out for someone like me and I didn’t find it was the right fit for me, doesn’t mean it will be the wrong fit for someone else.”

Her return last month was quickly followed by lacing up the basketball shoes again ... to re-join her beloved Dandenong in the SEABL ranks.

She also gets a chance this summer to add to her five WNBL matches - also at Dandenong where Antoniadou hopes to earn a call-up to play under her former SEABL coach Larissa Anderson ... but this time at the domestic basketball peak.

Eastern Ladies Badminton Association (ELBA) has come a long way since the old days sweeping out the Dandenong Agricultural Sheds.

From ELBA’s humble roots in 1976, all the way through to celebrating its 40th birthday on Wednesday afternoon, there have been plenty of great times chasing the shuttlecock.

Association co-founder Val Nesbit recalled vividly the rapid expansion ELBA went through as ladies flocked to the Wednesday competition.

“We were playing at the sheep sheds at the agricultural pavilion in the beginning - used to have to sweep up the possum poo before we got the courts up,” Nesbit said. “We just grew from there and using both halls from then - started with about nine teams and we just grew and grew.”

The once nomadic ELBA trekked around the south east for a few years before ending up at Springers Leisure Centre, Keysborough, in 1983 and from then on the association has flourished.

With the grand final action on court going down to the wire, members from across association’s history - including nine foundation members from 1976 - came along to celebrate and savour another successful season.

“It’s a marvellous sport - doesn’t get a whole lot of publicity - but it’s wonderful to see people play it and get out there and swing a racquet,” Nesbit said.

“It was good on Wednesday as we must have had about 10 or more of the girls for the first year in 1976 - that was great - we try to keep in touch with some of the people from back then.

“We travel from all over the place to come in and nothing stops us.”

While it’s not the biggest pastime on the Australian sporting map, Nesbit said it’s the friendships and anticipating the next week’s matches that kept her coming back throughout the years.

“It’s been 40 years of friendships and really good competition - it’s a great way to meet people of all nationalities and it’s a very mixed group we
