A less hectic pace of life “

I go to school all week, work all day Saturday in Barwon Heads so it’s good to get out here and just be somewhere different…

“Dad says there are just lots of locals here who are out for a coffee or brunch,” Olivia said. “There’s some good places around here that do yummy pancakes.” Olivia was pictured on a sunny Sunday morning and said she was in a good mood after her AFL team Richmond defeated Sydney the previous night by a point with a kick after the siren. “Dad was happy, so I was happy too,” she laughed.

TEENAGER Olivia lives in Barwon Heads with her parents, but she loves Geelong West and the river end of Pakington Street. She said she enjoys the tranquil river end of Pako and the cafes in Geelong West and Newtown, where she loves to have a slice of cake and a moccha. “It gets really busy in Barwon Heads on weekends and sometimes it’s just nice to come here as it’s a bit less hectic,” Olivia said. “I go to school all week, work all day Saturday in Barwon Heads so it’s good to get out here and just be somewhere different.” The 15-year-old Christian College Highton Year 10 student will turn 16 later this month and likes the fact that she can walk down Pakington Street without the hordes of tourists and weekenders that innunadate her home town.

Built with eternity in mind GEELONG West has an abundance of interesting architecture and the Christian Reformed Church of Geelong Manse on Pakington Street is no exception. The church was built in 1876 as the Newtown Methodist Church. The structure is elaborately detailed and built of Waurn Ponds limestone with Barrabool sandstone. In 1891 the church had internal alterations and a pipe organ was installed. Stained glass windows and doors were added in 1947. “We do use it occassionally,“ church Pastor John Zuidema said. “It’s well maintained.“ In 1954 the interior was again altered with an enlargement of the choir stall and a new sanctuary. The building has been used by the Geelong Reformed Church since 1965. It’s a significant piece of architecture and has historical importance in Victoria. It’s an extraordinary example of a Gothic-style church. Details such as the form of the finials, the curved decorations of the porch and the decorated frieze of the string course reflect the influence of French architectural writer Viollet-le-Duc on the work of the architects Davidson and Henderson. “We’re just a group of people who love

Jesus Christ and have love for each other,“ Pr Zuidema said. “Anybody is always welcome. We try to love one another and try to be a welcoming fellowship.“ The church is also architecturally significant for the craftsmanship and decoration it showcases in its use of stone. The exquisite timber ceiling and the stained glass windows are an eye-catching experience. The Reformed Church of Geelong is of historical interest for its associations with the Methodist Church in Victoria. The church was built after the Methodists had moved away from John Wesley’s original concept of the church as a “plain and decent“ preaching-house to an acceptance of more-elaborate and substantial Gothic-style structures. Nevertheless, the nonconformist tradition is reflected in the building’s halllike spatial composition and its emphasis on the pulpit, choir stall and pipe organ. However, being a Heritage-listed building, Pastor Zuidema said the Church had to pay for any repairs themselves. Part of the roof cost $90,000 to repair recently, which “becomes quite burdensome in the congregation,“ Pr Zuidema said. You can see this superb building at 233 Pakington Street, Geelong West.

GRUBguide

Savour the flavour BY ALLIRA POTTER, INSTAGRAM @GRUB_ GUIDE HEY guys. Another month is upon us and there seems to be so many awesome new places to eat at along Pako. My current favourite is Southside cafe down the river end. This month I thought I would share with you a delicious savoury muffin recipe to keep you warm this winter. I am going mad on savoury muffins, sometimes I add bacon in them for my husband, sometimes I stuff them with big chunky squares of Meredith’s goats cheese in the middle ... hmmm yum! These muffins I’ve made are gluten free and can be made dairy free if you don’t add cheese. Good luck making these we cannot wait to see your pictures, make sure you tag @grub_guide on Instagram so we can see them.

RECIPE · 3 cups self-raising gluten-free flour. · 1/4 cup vegetable oil. · 2 cups of your favourite mixed vegetables (previously cooked off). · 1 teaspoon of garlic. · Handful of mixed herbs (freshly cut basil and chives). · 6 eggs. · One whole tomato for your topping. · Your choice of cheese. METHOD 1. Pre-heat your oven to 180 degrees Celsius. 2. Grease your muffin tray, I tend to place some baking paper in them. 3. Add all your dry ingredients in the bowl and mix. 4. Then add the rest of your ingredients and mix again, season well if you wish. 5. Portion these into the muffin trays, filling to 3/4s full. 6. Place chopped up tomato and your choice of cheese on top. 7. Cook for 20 mins depending on your oven so keep an eye on them.

A helping hand in every bite HEALTHY, humanitarian, heartfelt - that’s how Zambrero is changing the face of quick service restaurants. Anyone who frequents Pakington Street knows that we are spoilt for choice when it comes to food. From modern Australian, to Greek, Filipino and Thai. When Zambrero arrived on Pako’s food scene some 18 months ago, they fulfilled our tastes and desires for new wave Mexican food. Everyone jumped on the Zambrero train, filling their bellies with their fresh and hearty dishes like burritos, bowls, and nachos, to name just a few. While we’re totally sold on the fresh Mexican that has now become a staple of the street, it was Zambrero’s Plate 4 Plate program which really won a place in our hearts. You see, it’s not until you’ve walked into Zambrero that you realise that your purchase goes much further than just satisfying your hunger, it also alleviates a hunger problem that spreads all over the globe. Since the first restaurant opening in Canberra in 2005 by founder and owner Dr Sam Prince, the Plate 4 Plate initiative was built into the company’s business model. The concept is simple: for every burrito or bowl sold, a meal is donated to someone less fortunate in the developing world. Zambrero exists somewhere between a quick service restaurant franchise and an humanitarian organisation. It sells fresh, healthy, flavoursome Mexican for a reason: to help tackle world hunger. The Plate 4 Plate initiative has taken corporate social responsibility to a new level. So far, the company has donated over eight million meals to the developing world and this number continues to grow. Zambrero on Pakington Street has donated over 60,000 meals since opening in in December 2014. In 2015, the company extended its humanitarian efforts to combat poverty in our own backyard. To do this, Zambrero created a range of retail products that includes superfood muesli bars and black rice packets with the purpose of alleviating the growing hunger problem in Australia. With every retail product sold, a meal is donated to an Australian in need.

At the core of Zambrero is Dr Sam Prince’s belief that an aid organisation should be run with the same rigour as business. He has deeply and carefully formed his ideas about how Zambrero can most effectively make their mark on a truly global scale. “Before you even begin to help someone, you firstly need to have a clear vision as to what comprises a basic human right and a basic human responsibility,” says Dr Prince. To do this the team needed to partner with organisations working in the field who shared their common goal to end world hunger. Establishing relationships with Stop Hunger Now and Foodbank Australia, both hunger relief organisations, helps Zambrero achieve their mission while focusing on developing and delivering quality and healthy Mexican food. Stop Hunger Now packs and distributes food to countries where many do not have access to adequate nutrition, primarily through school feeding programs. Being founded by a doctor, Zambrero is supremely conscious of serving delicious food that delivers optimal nutritional benefits. Being a young and dynamic brand means they are constantly looking for new ways to deliver fresh and delicious Mexican food. Last Christmas the company launched the IQ Range, a selection of menu items designed to foster physical health and optimise mental performance. The Bowl IQ, Burrito IQ and Chikito IQ meals contain eight essential minerals and vitamins, including iron and zinc that support cognitive functions such as memory, learning and concentration. IQ Range meals consist of spirulina infused black rice, amaranth seeds with meat, guacamole and introducing the new Salsa IQ, featuring pepita seeds and black turtle beans. Healthy, hearty, helpful and humanitarian. Zambrero embodies all these words and then some. So whether it’s your first or 100th time walking into Zambrero on Pako, you’ll be filled with a warm and fuzzy feeling knowing that your purchase not only works wonders for your hunger but someone else’s too.

PAKO business Living it up on ‘weekend’ in paradise WHERE to head for a girls’ getaway that’s close to Australia, warm and with lots to see and do? I decided on Singapore so my sister and I set off for an action-packed five-night long weekend. I hadn’t travelled to Singapore in around six years so I was keen to see the changes since I was last there. I chose to stay right in Orchard Road at the Singapore Marriot Tang Plaza which we found was such a good location as we had a MRT station just underneath the hotel, so a perfect base to head off from there. The MRT system is so efficient, clean and easy to navigate around. We spent the first day using the MRT exploring Chinatown, Little India and then spent the afternoon at Raffles. Of course we ordered the famous ‘Singapore Sling’ which is always a bit of fun and a great photo opportunity.

Sentosa Beach. 154334

The next day we headed over to Sentosa Island by MRT then Monorail to experience Universal Studios. Sentosa Island certainly had changed a lot in the past few years and Universal Studios was fantastic. Quite well set out with seven different zones each catering to different age groups and different ride levels. Plenty of places to eat and grab something to drink. The Jurassic World and the Sci-Fi City were a real highlight and with some great rides which made the day a lot of fun even for us adults.

Gardens by the Bay. 154334

We stayed on that evening heading to the beach area for a cool drink and sunset before enjoying some dinner. Easy to head back over on the Monorail which runs regularly and then a quick MRT back to the hotel. Would be a great option for families who perhaps didn’t want to travel all the way over to America but still experience Universal Studios a little closer to home. The following morning we headed early to the zoo by taxi (this was the quicker option than MRT due to its location.) We enjoyed breakfast with the

orangutans which we could get quite close to. The whole zoo is set out beautifully with a lot of the monkeys able to climb out of their enclosure so quite different from Australian zoos. We spent a few hours after our breakfast looking around then headed back to Marina Bay area. The next few hours we spent walking around in amazement at this whole area. Marina Bay Sands is a stunning area and with a canal river through the middle of the shopping complex is like nothing I’ve ever seen before. We then walked over to

The Gardens by the Bay which are truly amazing with the Flower dome and Skyway a real highlight. The light shows which are on twice every night at both Marina Bay Sands and Gardens by the Bay are spectacular and worth staying into the evening for as there are plenty of places to grab dinner. You can experience the light show at Gardens by the Bay from underneath the Supertrees or from the Skyway from above. We spent many hours searching through all of the amazing shopping complexes and you truly could spend weeks uncovering more shopping options. All extremely clean and beautifully modern complexes. You will find some items quite expensive but still some great bargains can be found. Overall I found Singapore to be such a great holiday and really have so much to offer for all kinds of travellers from couples, girls’ trips and families. I look forward to heading back to explore even further.

WINTER IS HERE It’s that time of the year again, it’s wet and cold outside and most of us would probably prefer to remain indoors by the heater with a warm drink, however life goes on. I am one of those people who have tended to get sick during winter, and sometimes ‘lucky’ enough to have been sick the whole way through. So I shall share with you what I am doing to help prevent myself getting sick this winter and also some tips to help get you better more quickly should you get sick. First things first, make sure you get your annual flu shot, the viruses in the vaccine change every year so it is important to keep up to date.

Stomping grounds to form West Saints. The club commenced in 1926 in the Geelong Football Association, winning its first flag in 1935. The club joined the GDFL in 1946 and was runners-up to East Geelong in the grand final. The club has won senior football premierships in 1935, 1956, 1966, 1971, 1978 and 1987. The distinctive blueand-yellow striped guernseys are often described one of the best-looking playing strips in country Victoria. The club song was adopted from the current AFL Western Bulldogs 'Sons of the West’ tune in 2014. The lyrics have been altered slightly reflect the yellow and blue colours. Bakers Oval is also hosting the Geelong Gaels Gaelic Football and Hurling Club in 2016. The Gaels will be training at Bakers Oval on Wednesday nights from 6pm during the season and will play a handful of matches at the venue

• I am taking Astragalus - a herb used to enhance the immune system, energy production and digestion. It is particularly good for viral infections, especially for prevention. This herb has i immune modulating properties and is best used for prevention or to help treat the final stages of a virus. • I also take Ultabiotic 45 - a very strong combination of probiotics. Did you know our gut is our main immune organ? Some probiotic strains inhibit growth of bad bacteria in the gut whilst others bind to viruses and help to ii prevent mucus associated infections . It is important to use a good quality probiotic as studies have shown some brands actually contain harmful bacteria. • What about when you are actually sick? Andrographis is a herb clinically proven to increase the number of immune cells in the body and reduce severity of coughs, nasal discharge, iii sinus pain and even headaches . • Zinc & Vitamin C. Strong evidence suggests that taking zinc lozenges significantly reduces the duration of upper respiratory tract infections compared to placebo, however there has been little research for use as a preventative. There is abundant evidence that the immune system is sensitive to Vit C. The clinical evidence suggests at least 2g daily for a iv decrease in cold duration by 26% . Look after yourself these wintery months; eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and drink plenty of water. Check with myself, or another health professional that these medications are right for you and please feel free to drop in anytime and have a chat about your health. i

BAKERS Oval is synonymous with Geelong West. The oval is Geelong West Cricket Club’s home ground and hosts Corio Model Railway Club and the local Scout group. It has a high community use. The oval is the training home of the mighty Geelong West Cheetahs, who play Aussie Rules football and netball in the Geelong and District Football/Netball League. But this is where it gets a bit confusing. The Geelong West Sporting Club, formerly known as the Geelong West Cricket and Football Club, are colloquially known as ‘Blue West’. This is to distinguish the club from the old VFA Geelong West team (whom the locals called ‘Red West’). Blue West train at Bakers Oval in Shannon Avenue but play home games at Red West’s ground in Church Street. Red West merged with St Peter's back in 1989

Hodges new premises. 154239

New home for Hodges HODGES Real Estate celebrated the opening of its new premises in Geelong West with a laid-back, yet classy, affair that offered an air of excitement. About 120 people attended and were greeted with Veuve Champagne on arrival. They walked through the new office and were led to the parking lot which was done up with synthetic turf, a marquee, festoon lights and a white picket fence. There were heaters on hand, but it was a beautiful warm night so they were not needed. There was lots of laughter and mingling. People were

very impressed with the new office. It was catered by Truffleduck, and they also had custom designed cookies by Cake in the Afternoon for guests to take home. For the 15 staff, they couldn’t wait to move. Being on one floor has brought them closer together as a team - plus there are no stairs. They also have a kitchen where they can actually sit down and have a meal together. And separate male/female toilets. The new premises has given the team more exposure as people come into Geelong West as it’s now an eye-

grabbing feature on Pako. The area itself speaks volumes as well - Geelong West and Newtown are where most of the firm’s properties, rentals and sales, are located. This means the team at Hodges get to see their vendors and landlords face to face in the community. They also had the pleasure of going through a rebrand, which has given them an extra bit of attention. As a whole, it’s given the team more definition and a sense of pride in working for Hodges.

PAKO pep-talk

Dreading Monday morning? BY MUFFY CHURCHES “OMG it’s already Sunday evening! In a matter of hours I’m back to the work slog ... sigh, groan”. Not an uncommon sensation for us to have, and it will probably mean that we’ll fall asleep having pre-programmed the following day to be one of caffeinated drudgery and brute force. Can we turn this around? Is there a way to ease into the week with more positivity and even a sense of fun? For most of us, the answer is yes! We simply need a mindset REFRESH - a renewal of the thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes that we connect to our job. Consider the concept that the quality of our thinking generates the quality of our life experience. Based on this premise, our Sunday night trepidation may be a symptom of a collection of ineffective, selflimiting, default thought patterns that stand in our way of enjoying work. Here are some tips for transforming your dread

into energised and positive anticipation. 1. Acknowledge the Good Stuff One of the most powerful tools we have to play with is gratitude. It’s so easy to get lost in the grey clouds of what’s not working well in life, that we can lose track of what is actually quite awesome.Take a quiet moment Sunday evening to think about all the wonderful parts of your life, simple things that are working well. 2. Have Intention: Envision, Enable, Enact Without a clear view of what we want our week to look and feel like, it will simply happen TO us. Being a powerless ride-along is not something any of us ever intended to allow. Instead, try this: Become the director of your own movie and begin to see your week, as you WANT it to be, clearly and in detail. If you can imagination it, it can become real. 3. Ramp Up Your Fun-Factor It’s easy to become serious

and almost mechanical when work and home life are hectic. Everything needs to be accomplished so quickly and the stress builds. Our ‘light and easy’ side is the first to go, so let’s revitalise it. Start by giving yourself permission to have fun even though you’re busy. 4. Manage Your Mindset Managing our mindset means making strategic selections as to what we choose to think in order to produce the positive, feel-good, and rewarding outcomes that we prefer. Author Mike Dooley is quoted as saying “Thoughts become things, so choose the good ones!” Muffy Churches is an internationally renowned integrative success coach.
