Election axe for rule preventing Avalon overseas flights

Cleared for take-off A bi-partisan election promise to give Avalon Airport regional status will open the international skies, according to airport chief Justin Giddings.

Both Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Opposition Leader Bill Shorten this week promised to reclassify Avalon as a stand-alone regional airport.

The Geelong Indy revealed five weeks ago that the airport’s classification as a metropolitan facility - the same as Melbourne Airport - had foiled all attempts to secure an international carrier.

Airports such as Adelaide, Gold Coast, Cairns and Darwin are all classified as regional gateways.

The Federal Government offers incentives to international airlines through the

Regional Air Access Package.

Mr Giddings said the move opened up the opportunity to attract airlines from places like Hong Kong, the Philippines, Malaysia, Fiji and other countries.

“Previously we were restricted by bilateral arrangements but this really provides an open sky for the airport,” he said.

Authority attack spreads

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Calls to disband a state authority for progressing central Geelong developments have escalated.

Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson called the Geelong Authority “powerless” during a debate with Labor’s Libby Coker on Wednesday.

“The authority either needs to be given proper powers to do its job or it needs to be disbanded because, at the moment, it’s just a halfway house and it’s not doing the job,” she said during the Geelong Business Network event.

“The Geelong Authority, established by the State Government, is, regrettably, an authority without any power.

“It’s nothing more than an advisory committee to the Minister for Planning.”

The Indy last week reported the first call to disband the authority after it failed to deliver any projects or a business plan for Geelong’s proposed convention centre.

Ms Henderson raised the business plan failure, saying it wrecked any hope of the centre proposal securing a pre-election funding commitment.

Geelong’s award-winning waterfront was developed “properly” in the 1990s under then-premier Jeff Kennett, she said.

“When Jeff Kennett did it he set up the Steampacket board and with a chair and powers and the ability to get things done.

“If we want to get things done in this town

we’ve got to get serious.

“We’ve seen a hotchpotch approach and, as the Commonwealth isn’t responsible for planning, we’re saying this isn’t good enough.

“We need the political will and it’s not good enough to muck around at the edges.”

Ms Coker defended the Geelong Authority as playing a “vital role” that could help deliver the convention centre.

“Federal Labor will liaise with the State Government and the Geelong Authority on a business case,” she said.

“We want the authority to come up with a plan as a priority. It’s essential to bring the business case forward - it’s a no-brainer.”

Tulli’s eyes on prize of speech with help of technology

By LUKE VOOGT A new device could help the parents of Wandana Heights’ Tulli Rose Seabert hear her speak for the first time.

The four-year-old can hear and see but a yetto-be-diagnosed neurological disorder prevents her from talking.

Geelong charity Kids Plus helped Tulli’s family acquire an Eye Gaze from the National Disability Insurance Agency.

The device converts eye movements into computer-generated speech.

Tulli’s mother Bec Seabert said the device

would give her four-year-old daughter “a voice“.

“An Eye Gaze gives Tulli the opportunity to learn, improve her communication and help her express needs, which we feel will be of great benefit to her in the future.”

Kids Plus chief Shaun Cannon said assistive communication technology such as Eye Gaze could change young lives.

“Technology advancements are enormously exciting for people with disabilities, their families and their friends,” he said.

“Advancements in assistive communication devices such as eye-gaze technology present a new frontier in the way we can support people

with severe and complex disabilities.”

In recent months Kids Plus purchased three eye-gaze communication devices with donations and a grant from the Federal Government’s Stronger Communities Program.

A number of children and young adults attending Kids Plus have severe and complex neurological disabilities leaving them unable to communicate without assistive technology.

Kids Plus provides specialist therapy programs for babies, children and young people with neuro developmental disabilities.

Mr Cannon said more information about the organisation was available at kidsplus.org.au.

City Hall and local health insurer GMHBA have joined forces to launch a new initiative to improve the fitness of Geelong office workers.

The 10-week program’s aimed at literally getting pen-pushers off their bums, noting the adverse health consequences from sitting at a desk all day.

Sounds great but there’s one obvious flaw: it’s an online program.

Which means most office staff will access it on their desktop PCs. At their desks.

Sitting down.

The federal election has attracted a veritable dog’s breakfast of major and minor-party candidates, nowhere more so than our very own marginal seat of Corangamite.

But among the Liberals, Laborites, Family Firsts and other assorted special-interest candidates, one ballot box noggin truly stands out.

Particularly when the Drug Law Reform Party’s Courtney Dalton (pictured) chooses to wear his rather striking top hat on the campaign trail.

Intrigued by the somewhat incongruous fashion statement, Double Take sought an explanation from the candidate in question.

“Broke my leg, needed a walking stick,” Courtney explained.

“If you have a walking stick you need a top hat.”

Makes sense, unlike the rest of this election.

Interesting exchange on a popular Geelong Police Facebook page this week when the local constabulary sought public help to locate a young man wanted on an unspecified warrant.

His dad certainly helped in an angry kind of way, commenting that his son was in rehabilitation trying to clean up his act and that the police’s blaze of publicity could compromise his treatment.

Then the youngster himself chimed in, revealing he was in Thailand - presumably the location of his rehab facility.

“Got your back son,” his father replied.

Either the police had the information they wanted or saw the point of dad’s argument because the post had been deleted the following day.

It’s been Simonds for a while but people keep tripping up over the name.

All too often people - even coach Chris Scott - refer to the home ground of the Cats as Skilled Stadium, a name that hasn’t adorned the ground for five years.

The latest to fall into the trap was Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson at a Geelong Business Network breakfast election debate this week.

Maybe it’s a tribute to how people view the Cats - as skilled.

Park family takes takeover to court

The family behind Anglesea Beachfront Family Caravan Park has taken legal action against a Great Ocean Road Coast Committee (GORCC) takeover.

A media release from the caravan park on Thursday said the Morris family’s legal proceedings had commenced in the Victorian Supreme Court.

Surf Coast foreshore manager GORCC announced three weeks ago it would take over the park after completing a public tender process for its lease.

Thursday’s release said the Morris family had won orders requiring GORCC to provide reasons for its decision “in determining the tender process and its proposed take-over of operations” of the park.

“Honourable Associate Justice Ierodiaconou made declarations and specific orders that the Great Ocean Road Coast Committee is a tribunal for the purposes of the Administrative Law Act,” the release said.

“The application was made ex-parte to the Supreme Court by the current tenants, the Morris family.”

The Morris family was “bitterly disappointed with the conduct of GORCC during the tender process and was forced into seeking intervention of the courts”, the release said.

The family would make no further comments about the legal proceedings.

The matter returns to the Supreme Court on 10 August.

A public forum of Anglesea businesses and campers last week supported a move to have the GORCC lease takeover nullified.

Business and Tourism Anglesea and concerned campers said they organised the forum over fears for the future of the caravan park.

Lara business awards seek entries A second annual Lara District Business Awards is seeking nominations to recognise the area’s most community-minded operators.

Awards organisers Lara District Community Bank and the town’s chamber of commerce want nominations by 30 June.

Bank branch manager Damien Foster said the awards recognised businesses that were playing an important role in the Lara community.

“The awards are all about highlighting what some of our businesses are doing in the community,” Mr Foster said.

“Many people don’t actually now what they do because there are quite a few quiet achievers.

“These awards are not like any other businesses awards; there are no written submissions and no costs to enter.

“We’re excited to recognise the work being done in the community.”

Mr Foster said winners would be announced

at a presentation event in August Prizes included media exposure and substantial funds contributed to the local community group of choice.

The Geelong Indy is sponsoring the awards again this year.

Managing editor Tony Galpin said the paper was glad to participate.

“I commend the chamber and community bank on establishing such an accessible awards program,” Mr Galpin said.

“Maintaining social cohesion in an area like Lara and district is important, not just to the businesses but to the community as a whole.”

A pioneering Geelong youth homelessness program has expanded to Canada.

Two sites in Ontario were now trialling the Geelong Project, said Barwon Child Youth and Family (BCYF) youth services manager Peter Jacobsen.

He recently returned from three weeks in Canada’s biggest city, Toronto, outlining the project to charity and government representatives.

“They’re experiencing the same issues, with similarly growing youth homelessness,” Mr Jacobsen said.

“As in our situation, they have come to a point where it’s clear that any impact on youth homelessness numbers will only come from early intervention.

The Geelong Project is a partnership between schools and youth services to enable early intervention with young people at secondary school level who are identified as being at risk.

But the program has struggled for State and Federal government funding despite its international success.

The Geelong Project has been identified as a leading program in reforming traditional approaches to youth homelessness policy.

Barwon Child, Youth and Family (BCYF) is funding the program due to the lack of government funding.

Mr Jacobsen said the project was only active in three Geelong secondary schools because of the funding restrictions.

Detective Senior Constable Sarah Woods said the 2013 Ford Falcon XR6 utility was distinctive because of its stock rear wheels, which indicated it was used for burn-outs.

“We want to encourage people across Geelong to have a look at the image as we try and identify that car,” Detective Woods said.

Police are hunting two men over damage to seven myki machines at Geelong railway stations earlier this year.

Police alleged the pair damaged machines at: Marshall on 4 and 18 April; Corio on 24 April and 4 and 28 March; and North Shore on 1 May and 3 April.

A mobile speed camera location in Torquay is the state’s third busiest, snapping an average of 32 drivers an hour.

The Darian Street location raises an average hourly revenue of $6700, according to freedom of information documents.

The top mobile speed camera hotspot in Victoria was Banksia Street, Heidelberg Heights, where 43 drivers were snapped hourly, generating revenue of almost $9000, according to a Nine News investigation of the figures.

The second busiest site was in Power Road, Doveton, with an hourly average of 40 motorists.

The Speed Cameras Save Lives website said the Darian Road location was set up for two reasons.

The website said the Torquay Street was the “subject of a validated complaint of excessive speeds” and “identified by police to be a speedrelated problem site”.

The documents revealed mobile speed cameras raised almost $83 million a year, with drivers around the state snapped on average every 83 seconds.

Freedom of Information documents have revealed the top 50 speed camera hotspots across the state, measured by the average number of drivers nabbed per hour.

In 2015, there were nearly 2200 mobile speed cameras on Victorian roads.

Meanwhile, the website revealed that several fixed camera sites around Geelong were being upgraded from a wet film camera.

The new cameras were in a “pre-commissioned” status, the website said.

“When a fixed camera is installed, it undergoes thorough testing before it starts to issue fines,” it said.

“Pre-commissioned cameras will operate as normal, and may flash if a car speeds through an intersection or runs a red light, but no fines will be issued.”

The four pre-commissioned camera locations are the intersections of Thompson Road and Separation Street, Bell Park; Princes Highway and Purnell Road, Corio; Settlement Road and Torquay Street, Belmont; and Moorabool Street and Fyans Street, South Geelong.

An attendant threw a metal stool to foil a wouldbe robber at Norlane milk-bar on Monday morning.

Police said a man entered the Robin Ave store just after 8am and walked toward the counter where he threatened the male attendant with a knife and demanded cash.

But as the man approached the counter the victim threw the stool, prompting him to leave the store, police said.

He was last seen riding a bicycle along Curlew Cres. The attendant was uninjured and the robber left empty-handed.

Detectives from Geelong Crime Investigation Unit were investigating, police said.

Security camera images revealed that the man was wearing a grey hooded jumper and grey pants and had white cloth over his face.

Big-wave hero’s Archibald entry

By LUKE VOOGT Barwon Heads artist John Druce hopes a chance meeting with a giant-wave surfer will help him win this year’s Archibald Prize.

John’s latest entry into Australia’s most prestigious portrait competition depicts daredevil Jan Juc surfer Ross Clarke-Jones with a giant wave crashing in the background.

Earlier this month John watched the ClarkeJones on Netflix at his son-in-law’s Sydney home.

“Some of the waves he rides are incredible,” John said.

A week later he ran into him at a Torquay store. A man held the door for John’s wife, Sandra, who she recognised was Clarke-Jones.

“We just watched you in a movie and you’re mad,” Sandra told the amused surfer.

After a friendly chat he agreed to pose for the portrait which is now on its way to the Archibalds.

John, 77, said he had entered the prestigious portrait competition at least 20 times since 1977.

“I’ve lost count,” he told the Indy.

“I’ve been putting them in for a while.”

Perhaps his most noteworthy entry was of Geelong AFL legend Gary Ablett Snr in the late 1990s.

When he met Ablett for the first sitting the footballer brought sons Nathan and Gary Jnr but forgot his jersey, John said.

The raw power of the football legend, stripped to waist, awed him.

“If you were on him and he gave you an elbow to chest that would be you out for the day.”

John has painted tattooed gypsies, a Northern Territory Administrator and original West Gate Bridge chairman Sir Oscar Meyer.

The son of a fisherman, John has lived at Barwon Heads his whole life, apart from 10 years working in England’s film industry during the 1960s.

He started drawing at an early age and was an illustrator at the Sun Newspaper before moving to the UK in 1966.

His portrait work also stretches back to the era, when he’d paint pictures for £1 each in Torquay.

“I’d paint 10 or 15 a day,” he said.

John was a graphic design teacher at Gordon Institute of TAFE for 25 years.

After retiring 12 years ago he travelled around Australia by caravan with his wife and he met hundreds of interesting people who inspired his painting.

The disability sector will create over 1200 jobs in the Barwon region over the next three years, according to a new report.

The impact of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) would also double the number of people working in the sector around Victoria, said the report by the NDIS’s administration agency.

The jobs boom in the Barwon region, where the NDIS had been under trail since July 2013, would “drive demand for a more diverse range of jobs than people usually expect”, said the scheme’s state manager, David Moody.

“The disability sector offers the kind of flexibility, support and job satisfaction that many people are now looking for in a fulfilling career,” Mr Moody said.

‘Big chance’ for state to fix city

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN The State Government has an opportunity to significantly improve Geelong’s economic development while the council is under administration, according to an economic expert.

One of the authors of an annual State of The Regions report, Peter Hylands of National Economics, said the next 18 months would be crucial for Geelong’s future.

“Local government plays a major role and you would think that for the State Government-appointed administrators this is an opportunity get the region going,” Mr Hylands said.

“Geelong should be viewed along with western Melbourne as a strategic node.

“The Victorian Government needs to focus on employment clusters creating jobs in the west and Geelong.”

The 2016-17 State of the Regions report, prepared by National Economics for the Australian Local Government Association (ALGA), is an annual review of Australia’s major regions.

Mr Hylands said although the region showed headline unemployment at 7.5 per cent, a more realistic figure would be 10 per cent.

He said key indicators showed the region’s

household disposable income was below average at $38,500, while social security take up was at 15 per cent, above the national average of 12 per cent.

Mr Hylands said household debt was an issue, with overall wealth declining.

The report said the issues were due to the fallout from a continued decline of employment in the manufacturing sector.

“The impacts are particularly severe in Geelong as a consequence of the now imminent departure of automotive manufacturers and a number of their supply chain companies,” the report said.

“Geelong also has a high number of unemployed young people at 5900 in 2016.

“This represents a significant increase since 2011 when the number of unemployed young people was 2500.”

The report said Geelong youth unemployment was at 17.4 per cent, placing the region in the top 10.

Construction proved to be one bright spot, with residential construction activity increasing 25 per cent over a five-year period, while nonresidential construction expenditures increased by 61.5 per cent.

Veteran Edith in new world at Coles Edith Vasle received an honour she never thought she would, simply through persistence.

She was selected to help cut the ribbon to open the newly refurbished Coles supermarket at Belmont as its longest-serving staff member.

The Geelong woman has worked for Coles for 47 years, beginning in the store at the top end of High Street in 1969 before transferring to the Coles New World supermarket, as it was then branded.

“I’ve always been based at Belmont even though I’ve helped out at other stores occasionally,” Edith said.

“I’ve loved it. We have a lovely team to work with and because you get to know them over such a long period of time, it’s like you live life with them.

“You see their children grow up and enter the workforce themselves. Regular customers become like family.

“It’s a good company to work for and I’ve never wanted to go anywhere else.”

Coles Belmont store manager Michael Hogan said the refurbishment would create 12 new jobs as part of an “enhanced shopping experience”.

The store would welcome new team members across all areas including customer service, bakery and deli, bringing the number of staff to more than 120, he said.

Fashionable theft ‘ends in accident’ A pair of fashion-conscious alleged thieves have stolen designer gear from a Geelong store before backing into a vehicle while making their getaway.

But the male and female were caught on surveillance camera in the “major brand store” on 11 June, police posted on Facebook.

The pair “selected several items of clothing” from the central city store’s men’s and women’s ranges before leaving through the shop’s Malop Street doors.

The pair got into a small hatchback vehicle, with stolen number plates XUZ-239, but reversed into a parked vehicle before leaving, the police post said.

Almost 120 jobs are available as the Surf Coast’s newest tourist attraction readies for opening.

Bellbrae's Great Ocean Road Chocolaterie and Ice Creamery has begun hiring ahead of its 1 September opening.

Owners Leanne and Ian Neeland said they had already been busy recruiting chocolatiers from France and Belgium, planning the thousands of products that will be available from the new venue.

“Having a sweet tooth is not a prerequisite but makes it more fun,” Ms Neeland said.

Local builders and landscapers were working hard to have the venue ready, with the new recruits set to start their roles from August, she said.

Staff members were needed to begin production of the business's 250-strong chocolate ranges as well as ice cream, pastries and cakes for the centre’s café.

“We have nearly 100 positions to fill in the areas

of packing the handcrafted chocolates, customer service in our showroom, front of house in our 300 seat cafe, chefs and kitchen staff and chocolate production team members,” Ms Neeland said.

“We also require administration staff and groundskeepers of our newly planted orchard and gardens.”

The business's 2000-square-metre showroom, production facility and café occupy six hectares on the Great Ocean Road between Anglesea and Torquay.

The facility would become a thriving tourism business for the region, Ms Neeland said.

“It’s estimated the Great Ocean Road Chocolaterie and Ice Creamery will provide a $15 million boost a year to the region’s economy in addition to the construction phase, welcoming over 700,000 visitors in its first year of operation.”

City beauty hits the wall Geelong’s “most beautiful woman in the world” now adorns a wall in the city’s centre.

City Hall commissioned artist Michael Cassar to paint a mural of Moi-Yo Miller on the corner of James Street and Minns Lane as part of a central Geelong street-art project.

Ms Miller was renowned as the world’s most beautiful woman when she travelled internationally at a magician’s assistant during the 1930s.

“She shot to fame when she met the Great Magician Dante in Melbourne when she was appearing in a musical revue,” explained City Hall’s Brett Luxford.

“Dante asked her to be part of his show and she went on to become known as one of the alltime great magic assistants.”

Geelong Coast (GC) magazine interviewed Ms Miller at her Melbourne home in 2013 when she was aged 98.

“Oh, it was fun, such fun,” she said of her heyday touring the world with Dante,” she told GC. “We were young and it didn’t seem like hard work, though I suppose it was.”

Ms Miller’s portrait follows other central city artworks of noted Geelong people including musician Chrissy Amphlett and Wathaurung

elder King Billy.

Mr Luxford was rapt with the new addition.

“The striking mural of Moi-Yo Miller is a fantastic way to connect the community to one of Geelong’s iconic faces,” he said.

“Local artist Michael Cassar has spent hours of work on the mural and he is another example of the extraordinary creative talents that we have living in and contributing to the cultural fabric of our city.

“We’re proud to support his emerging professional career through this commission.”

Floods slam city with bill of $1m BE THE

Flash flooding and storm damage from January’s severe weather event has left Geelong ratepayers with a $1 million repairs bill.

City of Greater Geelong chief executive officer Kelvin Spiller said council’s insurance department was in the process of finalising a flood claim.

Damage to Vines Road Community Centre alone cost almost $600,000 to repair, he said.

The centre will have an official reopening celebration this Saturday.

“The city suffered damage to more than 70 council buildings in the storm, including the South Barwon Community Centre and Highton Library,” Mr Spiller said.

“Vines Road Community Centre had the most damage and the organisations and groups operating from the centre have worked with council staff to assist with flood clean up and re-establish services.”

Mr Spiller said the worst-hit areas of Geelong during the severe weather event included central Geelong, Belmont, Highton, Geelong West, Hamlyn Heights and Newtown.

“In the days and weeks following the storm council received almost 1000 calls for advice or assistance, and reports of storm water, general flooding, damage and fallen trees.

“Hundreds of staff worked to man customer service lines, repair inundated parks, fix roads and drains and connect with as many residents as possible to provide advice and assistance on residential and commercial building damage.”

He said a post-storm public information forum in March provided residents with a chance to seek advice on dealing with mould, re-establishment grants, insurance, personal support and disaster legal aid.

“The Jobs and Investment Package is designed to leverage opportunities from remarkable tourist attractions including the Great Ocean Road,” he said.

Corio MP Richard Marles said designating Avalon Airport as a regional airport would unlock jobs growth and boost the region’s tourism potential.

GONE: Police appeal for help with missing boat.

More boats gone Thieves have continued targeting the eastern end of the Bellarine Peninsula for boats and vehicles, according to police.

The thefts extended to a truck stolen from Point Lonsdale on Monday, police revealed on social media this week.

The incidents followed a report in last week’s Indy of a recent spate of boat thefts on the peninsula, with some hauls also including vehicles attached to the boats’ trailers.

The latest incidents included the theft of a WANTED: The woman 6.4-metre boat with a police want to interview.

150-horsepower Yamaha outboard motor from a “secured backyard” at Portarlington home, police posted.

The Palm Beach-brand boat disappeared along with its aluminium Seahawk dual-axled trailer either late Sunday or early Monday.

The total value of the haul would have been worth tens of thousands of dollars.

Thieves also took an inflatable boat on a trailer from the backyard of a Queenscliff house between 3 and 10 June, police posted earlier this week.

The boat had a 2007 60hp Mercury outboard motor.

The truck was stolen on Monday before a credit card inside was used at stores in Ocean Grove, police posted.

Police released images of a women who would “certainly hold valuable information” about the truck and credit card.

Police urged anyone with information about the thefts to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Letters Give us a rev-up, Indy I was surprised to read that the Geelong News would cease production on 29 June (Geelong Indy, 17 June). Although the Indy is here to continue the public service of a free community newspaper, there is one thing I will miss.

The Indy has always been a better read. I really enjoy the weekly report on our town’s football team, the Cats, which keeps us informed on the dynamics and permutations at the Cattery from game to game.

The Tip-Stars footy competition is also enjoyable. Having been a contributor in a previous year, I know how hard it is to get a perfect score. I’m tipping Geelong Coast Kids’ Audrey to win this year. I’d enjoy seeing a youngster defeat all the other mature experts.

I don’t miss a real estate section because this area is adequately covered by specific magazines.

The only thing I will miss about the Geelong News is its Cars Guide. If the Indy could fill the void for rev heads like myself with a section on motoring news many people would be eternally grateful.

I hope this can become reality.

Vote for battlers Much election advertising seems to urge us to look out for our own self-interests when voting.

But for this election I ask people to vote for someone other than themselves.

For example, vote for the more than 700,000 unemployed Australians struggling to survive on Newstart allowances of just $38 a day.

Vote for disadvantaged children whose parents can’t afford the privilege of a private school education.

Or vote for low-paid hospitality and retail workers who rely on weekend penalty rates to earn a liveable income.

Vote, too, for older Australians forced to live in under-staffed, profit-driven aged care facilities.

Please vote also for the unwell Australians waiting for months for elective surgery.

Remember, as well, the extremely poor children in Asia and the Pacific going without clean water and education due to our lowest level of Australian aid on record.

Pushing some up hill

Massive amounts of blackfish, carp and eels have been killed in a very long stretch of the Barwon River from Boundary Creek to at least the Conns Road Bridge. The most likely cause is the highest upland freshwater acid sulfate soil site in Australia which is at Big Swamp on Boundary Creek, Yeodene.

The EPA has been aware of this site since 2008 but has not visited it because it has not been designated a contaminated site.

Ironically, the EPA is the body that makes such a designation. Extensive groundwater extraction at Barwon Downs is the major contributing factor causing Big Swamp to dry out, creating enormous amounts of acid and heavy metal toxins.

Leigh Adamson’s appeal for a climate tax (Letters, 17 June) was not as colourful as his earlier call for a Green vote to stop drought and wars in the Middle East but it did suggest he might want to think out the implications of his ideas.

He wants to reduce emissions of CO2 but didn’t explain why that would have the slightest effect on the weather.

Professor Bjorn Lomborg calculates that if all the Paris commitments were kept, total CO2 emissions by 2100 would reduce the global temperature by a twentieth of a degree.

As for the other events that Mr Adamson mentioned - a warm El Niño year, bleaching at the top end of the Great Barrier Reef and disastrous floods - these are nothing new.

Australia is, as poet Dorothea McKellar wrote long ago, “a land of droughts and flooding rains”.

Nothing’s changed in more than a century.

And Mr Adamson can forget about a “100 per cent renewable energy Australia”. Solar and wind are incapable of generating base-load power for which coal and gas generators will still be needed.

Germany and Denmark, front-runners in the renewable fad, are demonstrating the costs to industry and consumers.

This type of event has been on the cards for considerable time. Predictions forecast that this type of episode will happen on a regular basis until a natural balance in the depleted aquifer has been restored.

The depleted Pebble Point aquifer still has over 20 metres of recovery, even after groundwater extraction ceased in 2010.

State Government’s decision to have Geelong take water from Melbourne will go a long way to avoiding future kills.

The causal factors between groundwater extraction for Geelong and the fish kill is still to be accepted but a truly independent examiner could go a long way to establishing the facts.

Ticking away for 30 years of inaction shows just how long some problems take to materialise to such a degree that it is past a joke.

Party time rockin’ for The Bennies

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN It’s been a whirlwind of touring, festival appearances, an album and single release, interviews and magazine covers for The Bennies so far this year.

Shortly after wrapping up its Wisdom Machine tour in Maroochydore on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast recently, The Bennies found themselves 15,000 kilometres away, playing at a festival in Berlin, Germany.

The band toured the country and sold out shows wherever they went, including Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

The Bennies graced the covers of magazines, scored album of the week accolades and even infiltrated the charts, with the album debuting at number 40 on the ARIA album chart and number 10 on the Australian chart.

It’s indicative of the work ethic of the Melbourne band which has earned a reputation for heavy touring, building its reputation on its live sound.

But the four - Anty Horgan, Craig Selak, David Beaumont and Jules Rozenbergs - still find time to party.

“We live in the eye of the party whirlwind storm,” bassist Selak said.

“It’s pretty easy to cope with to be honest, although every Tuesday kinda seems to suck for some reason.

“I think we get some time off in August. But in true Bennies style, I’m sure we’ll find something hectic to fill it with.”

The Bennies even drew the attention of Less Than Jake drummer - and owner of Florida-based label Paper and Plastic - Vinnie Fiorello, who released the album in the UK and US. As a follow up, The Bennies were invited to play at Belgium festival Groezrock alongside their heroes, Rancid.

PARTY ANIMALS: After months on the road and ‘whirlwind’ overseas travel The Bennies brings its party tour to Geelong, at the Barwon Club next Thursday. reached number 88 on triple j’s hottest 100, some two months before physical copies of the album were even available.

“I guess our main aim with Wisdom Machine was to try and push all our ideas as far as we could,” Selak said.

“I feel like we achieved this for the most part, but in the future I think we wanna get weirder and even more creative and strange.”

After spending April and May on different continents, The Bennies returned home from the European and the UK tour to pick up phase two

of the Wisdom Machine tour.

The Australia leg tour includes 27 shows across each state, with regional shows including a Geelong gig.

The Bennies play the Barwon Club on Thursday 30 June with local support Keggin.

Farming stresses hit home in play A timely stage production will deal with mental stress on dairy farmers in struggling rural communities as they face the real thing in their milk wars with supermarkets.

Queenscliff Uniting Church will host Shannon Come Home this weekend, presenting the plight of the farmers through poetry and song.

“As the dairy industry reels from massive decreases in income, Shannon Come Home is a timely reminder of the mental health costs of stress in rural communities,” a church spokesperson said.

“The production will speak to our hearts and minds by raising awareness of the struggles through poetry and song.

“The Queenscliff Uniting Church has awareness and support for mental health as one of it’s core values and is honoured to be able to host this production.”

Musical director and singer/songwriter Jill Meehan unknowingly compiled material for Shannon Come Home after developing a strong affinity with farming communities and local produce. She lived in Gippsland during the late ‘90s when local farmer suicide inspired her to write the song Shannon Come Home before expanding it to a musical.

“The show has a good mix of musical genres, which include folk, blues and country,” the spokesperson said.

“With the combination of the beautiful harp playing of narrator/singer Christine Middleton, the lilting vocals and magical guitar playing of Jill Meehan and the raw emotion and warmth in the poetry of Tim Sheed, the audience will be treated to a feast of original songs and poetry, including a powerful song written by Sara Storer, Tell These Hands, which the cast couldn’t resist as it also captures the essence of farming life in one of the worst droughts in Australian history between 2003 and 2010.”

HIPPO HOORAY: GPAC hosts a special guest during school holidays.

Have a Hippo time in school holidays A singing, dancing hippopotamus will entertain children in central Geelong during the school holidays.

The imaginary character will feature in Hippo!

Hippo! A Big New Musical Adventure, set to visit Geelong Performing Arts Centre (GPAC) for two shows.

GPAC said the production was based on the children’s story There’s a Hippopotamus on Our Roof Eating Cake, the work of Australian children’s author Hazel Edwards and illustrator Deborah Niland.

“This show combines storytelling, music, song, dance and imagery,” GPAC said.

“Hippo is the imaginary friend of Girl, a young child. Girl believes that Hippo lives on the roof and can seemingly do anything he wants, when he wants, how he wants, particularly the things that Girl is unable or not allowed to do.

“Through Hippo, Girl is able to allay her fears and gain confidence in her early childhood years.”

GPAC will host Hippo! Hippo! A Big New Musical Adventure at midday and 2.30pm 5 July. * Geelong Coast Kids’ Facebook page is giving away four family passes to the noon performance of Hippo!

Travellers from Europe once drew inspiration on sighting the Cape Otway lighthouse - now as one of the leading Great Ocean Road attractions visitors are inspired by the stunning views from the peak of the beacon.

These school holidays a trip to the tower and its historic surrounds takes visitors to a place that was once so isolated it took six months for supplies to arrive.

Janice Haynes, presenting as The Lady of History, will present two Horrible Histories shows at Cape Otway in the school holidays.

On Monday 27, Tuesday 28, Wednesday 29 and Thursday 30 June from 10am to noon is Mary Anne’s Dreadful Sea Voyage, Mary Anne Ford’s account of her voyage to Australia on the China in 1841 and includes lots of stories about the awful conditions on sailing ships but has a happy ending.

And from 2pm to 4pm daily is Sarah’s 13 Ways to Die at Cape Otway, a ‘choose your own story’ show told by the character Sarah Riches using the Wheel of Death in which audience members choose from the wheel, which then prompts the story to be told.

There are also three history talks throughout the day for all patrons and also two indigenous

plant identification and bush tucker talks.

Light station manager Tricia Goodlet said there was an ongoing fascination with the beacon and its surrounds, with attractions geared to suit families.

The Koori Cultural Centre on the grounds takes visitors beyond the history of the lighthouse with guides explaining the finer points of bush medicine and tucker.

“You really can take a step back into yesteryear, try cooking some damper, throw a boomerang, or paint abalone shells,” she said.

The fresh air, roaming the historical precinct and the amazing views are certain to rev up an appetite and the lightkeeper’s kitchen stays with tradition, specialising in fine local produce from around the Otways.

The lighthouse is still a striking standout. Built in 1848, after a series of shipwrecks cost hundreds of lives, it stands in defiance of the elements perched on cliffs, overlooking a wild expanse of water where the Southern Ocean and Bass Strait collide.

Ms Goodlet said it’s also a great spot for whale watching or just wandering through the grounds taking in the sights, which include an historic telegraph station and WWII radar bunker.

SPORT Cats up for Saints scuffle

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Geelong can demonstrate just how professional it has become under Chris Scott when it takes on St Kilda on Saturday night at Etihad Stadium.

The Cats have geed themselves up well for the big games this season but faltered against lowerranked sides.

The Saints game gives Geelong an opportunity to prove it is a team that has become clinical enough to get up for those it is expected to win.

That was a hallmark of Geelong teams during its recent premiership period when it racked up the best win-loss record in the modern era.

Geelong has the best record of any team in the eight playing against other top eight sides, having accounted for Hawthorn, West Coast, Adelaide, GWS, North Melbourne and Western Bulldogs.

It has dropped only one game against a top side, GWS in round two.

And the remaining three games against top sides - Sydney, Adelaide, and Western Bulldogs, are all at Simonds Stadium.

But there’s little point in dropping games unexpectedly.

The commentary around the Cats this week following their demolition of the Western Bulldogs was that the team has now gelled with the inclusion of its big name recruits.

It is obvious that both Patrick Dangerfield and Joel Selwood have thrived with the development of their dynamic partnership.

It will be interesting to count how many times the pair share a give-and-go in the remaining home and away games.

Scott himself was pleasantly surprised at the way the team had found its mojo as demonstrated against the Western Bulldogs.

“I didn’t expect the score line,” Scott admitted.

“We weren’t sure how long our cohesion would take, but I feel more confident about that now.”

And it’s been the defence, where the tweaks occurred after the unexpected losses to Collingwood and Carlton, driving the turnaround.

That has led to Geelong dominating in contested possession, where it is plus 8.5 over last season and plus 4.7 in clearances.

Geelong’s biggest advantage is its ability to lock the ball in its forward half, giving forwards repeated opportunities to score.

The rugby-style territory-gained statistic creeping into Aussie Rules, even though it flies in the face of football’s flow, at least demonstrates Geelong’s advantages.

Highlighted by Dangerfield’s record 1042 metres gained against the Kangaroos, he still averages 600 metres a game with Selwood regularly clocking up 400 metres.

With that kind of supply, Geelong’s forwards are always on the lookout for their next scoring opportunity.

Warriors will need to lift their game against Thunder

By JOSIP ZILIC The effects of a heart-breaking FFA Cup loss, followed by a 4-2 capitulation along with key player injuries, have impacted the Warriors' form, which saw them dip again on the weekend with another loss, this time a 1-2 loss to Dandenong City, the Warriors second home loss in a row.

The mood will need to lift quickly as a rampaging Dandenong Thunder is coming their way on Saturday.

Thunder, who dispatched a normally resolute Ballarat with ease in a 4-0 rout last week, has a near perfect record in 2016. Their target man Brandon Barnes continued his consistent season with another goal on the weekend which takes him to 29.

The Warriors got off to a slow start, which invited Dandenong City to use its advantage of quick, wide play to keep Warriors keeper Daniel Zilic on his toes early.

This continued through the half, and on 34 minutes Gonzalo Freddi beat four North Geelong players to the ball just on halfway to slip down the left flank where the squared was met by Amir Osmancevic to notch up the lead.

The half time break gave the Warriors time for some intrinsic thinking and they lifted somewhat, with Matt Thorne the nucleus of their spark, along with Vito Cihello trying to drive between the lines.

It was enough to get the Warriors an equaliser and on 63 minutes Rudi Saglam pounced on a loose ball at the back post to swiftly spin and snap on target.

Unfortunately, it didn’t continue for the Warriors, and Dandenong City stepped up - looking more comfortable in the slippery conditions, keeping their composure and using their wider players to advantage.

Plenty of whiting ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Arriving at St Leonards Sunday afternoon, Peri Stavropoulos and Josh Whitford fished for squid and whiting.

After boating a few squid, they began chasing the whiting, making up some excellent arches on the sounder. They sent down a pilchard and soon hooked up a 6.5kg snapper, boated after a hard fight on whiting tackle.

Queenscliff continued providing whiting around the grass beds, particularly in the faster-flowing water. Tenderised squid and pippie worked well around tide changes, with the channel edges also producing gummy sharks.

The Barwon River estuary continued to hold great numbers of silver trevally, mullet and whiting the Ozone Jetty and Sheepwash. Small baits such as prawn and pippie caught plenty of fish on run-in tides.

Anglers caught plenty of squid while drifting over shallow weed beds at Clifton Springs with small 2.5-size jigs. Ian Bolster took a nice bag from the Curlewis Bank late Saturday afternoon, while whiting were on the bite in 6m off the Dell for anglers using lightly weighted pippies.

Spinning from the surf worked well along the coast, with anglers beaching Australian Salmon to 2kg. Wading out on incoming tides to casting 25g metal lures was a popular tactic, while anglers fishing rock platforms also had success when the swell subsided.

Trent Schiller cast hard-body lures around one of the small estuary systems down the Surf Coast, taking a chucky black bream of 43cm.

Anglers trolling Rapala X-Rap lures in 70m between Port Fairy and Portland boated southern bluefin tuna to 15kg.

Adam Van Der Lugt and I headed down to the Hopkins River on Monday morning. Marking plenty of schooled fish toward the bottom reaches of the river, we caught bream and estuary perch to 43cm on vibe-style lures.

Freshwater fishos looked to West Barwon Reservoir where casting soft plastics along the upper arms accounted for well-conditioned brown trout.

With the lake still low, it’s worth the walk amid some of the best scenery in the Otway Ranges.

Anglers wanting to wet a line over the next week should keep the Barwon estuary in mind for whiting and mullet, with live baits also offering the potential for bream and mulloway. Other saltwater options include squid around the whole Bellarine Peninsula, while freshwater anglers should try trolling Lakes Purrumbete and Bullen Merri at first light for trout and Chinook salmon.

The Warriors will need to shake off the laconic performance and find the fluidity and forward potency that lifted it to top spot earlier in the season if it wants to give Thunder a run for their money.
