Libs will block it

By PETER DOUGLAS A RE-ELECTED Turnbull Government will block the contentious enterprise agreement that is the focus of a dispute between the United Firefighters Union (UFU) and the Country Fire Authority (CFA), according to Deputy Liberal Leader, Julie Bishop.

Along with La Trobe MP Jason Wood, Ms Bishop declared the Federal Government would use its powers to alter the Fair Work Act to halt approval of the agreement.

The Liberal duo made the announcement while speaking at a CFA rally in Belgrave on Saturday, 18 June, in which hundreds of CFA volunteers from the Dandenong Ranges took to the streets to voice their disapproval of the EBA. First stop was the office of Monbulk MP, James Merlino, who is also the newly appointed Victorian Emergency Services Minister.

The CFA volunteers shouted their disapproval peacefully and clearly, while gaining support from many passers-by.

In front of the volunteers, Ms Bishop said if re-elected, the Federal Government would apply all levers at their disposal. “We will not stand idly by and allow a Labor Government to unionise a volunteer organisation of 60,000 people across Victoria,� she said. “This will not proceed. “We will do whatever we can to protect the CFA and the spirit of volunteerism that underpins the work that they do.�

Ms Bishop told the volunteers their voices were being heard. “I spoke to the Prime Minister (Malcolm Turnbull) this morning and he re-confirmed that a re-elected Turnbull Government will make changes to the Fair Work Act, so the Act cannot be misused to undermine volunteer organisations like the CFA,� Ms Bishop said. “(Employment) Minister Michaelia Cash has already said she’s received advice on it, she knows what powers she has as a federal minister. “We will take action as soon as we can.�

Mr Wood shared the sentiments of his Liberal colleague. “The Dandenong Ranges is one of the most high fire-prone areas in Australia,� he said. “These volunteers have done so much over so many years, without receiving one cent, to protect

As the group progressed through the main street, many chanted ‘hands off CFA’, while many drivers showed their support by honking their car horns.

During the rally, Mick Hampton from the Monbulk CFA said the EBA was a great concern for many. “If you read the EBA, a lot of that (our work) will stop because they want agencies to do the bidding,� he said. “This includes non-operational services ...

Meanwhile, Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria representatives paid tribute to former CFA chief executive, Lucinda Nolan, who quit her post on Friday; as well as former Emergency Services Minister Jane Garrett, who quit Cabinet after refusing to support the agreement.

Tower turmoil

By PETER DOUGLAS FEDERAL Communications Minister, Mitch Fifield, has weighed in on debate over mobile coverage in the Yarra Ranges, taking aim at claims from Labor candidate for Casey, Hovig Melkonian.

Mr Fifield spoke to the ‘Mail’, questioning Mr Melkonian’s comments made to the newspaper that Labor supported their Mobile Black Spot Program, but would extend the package if elected.

Mr Melkonian also claimed the roll-out of the program was skewed towards Coalition-held seats, also saying only 21 of the 416 towers rolled out had been switched on.

The candidate made the statements after Casey MP Tony Smith and Minister for Regional Communications, Fiona Nash, announced funding for four new mobile phone base stations in the Yarra Ranges.

However, Mr Fifield said Mr Melkonian’s statements were “grand claims” and Labor had no plan in place.

“Labor didn’t spend a dollar on

mobile black spots in six years in government,” he said.

“Labor still haven’t committed to our $100 million dollar round one program that will deliver two new base stations in Casey at Steels Creek and East Warburton that are fully funded and in planning.

“And Labor still haven’t committed to our $60 million in round two.”

As a condition of a Coalition win in the 2 July election, the base stations announced will be built at Mount Evelyn, Chum Creek, Reefton and Kalorama.

Mr Fifield said Labor had only been mildly positive towards round three.

“Tony Smith has worked hard and he and I will guarantee and will deliver,” he said.

“Vague words of support from the Labor candidate won’t cut it.

“Labor’s national headquarters needs to put it in black and white.”

The projected round three of the Mobile Black Spot Program sets out locations for between 100 and 150 towers that will cover roughly 900

mobile coverage black spots.

In response to Mr Fifield’s comments, Mr Melkonian said there was nothing vague about Labor’s commitment.

“I’m puzzled that Minister Fifield is playing politics with a bipartisan commitment to additional funding for the Mobile Black Spot Program,” he said.

“I support the announcement for building new mobile base stations in Reefton, Chum Creek, Kalorama and Mt Evelyn.

“Labor will build those mobile base stations; nothing vague about it.”

Mr Melkonian said that, more broadly, Labor supports the allocation of an additional $60 million to the Mobile Black Spot Program.

“It isn’t a grand claim to state that only 21 of the 499 round one towers had been switched on as of May 2016 - it’s a fact,” he said.

“I think Minister Fifield is trying to distract voters from the Abbott/Turnbull Government’s failure to deliver communication resources that are desperately needed in the Yarra Valley.”

Bumper cheque presentation A GROUP of local emergency services has been the recipient of cheques totaling $30,000. On Sunday, 5 June, the Oakleigh branch of the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes (RAOB) presented cheques of $10,000 each to Emerald CFA, Cockatoo CFA and Emerald SES. The funds represented the proceeds of the sale of a building the RAOB had owned.

Emerald Captain Paul Yandle said the funds represented a year’s worth of fund-raising, which he said would go towards an overhead projector.

Bill’s medal of honour DURING Bill Rogers’ ‘retirement’ for the past 20 years, the past president of the Rotary Club of Belgrave has still been going full-time.

As a volunteer welfare officer at Legacy, he has been diligently working 30-40 hour weeks in Melbourne’s southeast - and at times further abroad - to look after veterans and their families.

“If you live in the community you give back to the community,” the Berwick ex-police officer and Vietnam 7RAR veteran said.

On 13 June, Mr Rogers was named as a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) recipient for his voluntary deeds.

In addition to his work with the Rotary Club, involvements also include being an RSL member of Berwick and Dandenong.

Mr Rogers has also held board positions at Legacy in Melbourne and its national council.

As a police officer he protected witnesses and VIPs and

organised the Police World Games featuring 7000 athletes in 1995.

At the time the event was the biggest in Melbourne since the 1956 Olympics.

He said there’s a great need to look after the recent waves of veterans coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan. But often their families’ struggles are overlooked.

“What the families are going through is extremely tough.

They’re trying to hold things together.”

He knows how veterans tend to keep things to themselves, and tries to help families to understand why the returned servicepeople have changed.

“Nothing will ever replace the camaraderie and the mateship that you share with those served with.

“It’s the mental trauma they go through. A lot of them want to go back to where they came from - it’s what they know best and their mates are there.”

Mr Rogers remembers a wife struggling to deal with how she was treated by her returned WWII soldier husband.

“I sat down and went through what her husband went through in New Guinea and the Middle East. The things he had seen, the mates he’d lost ... it changes him.

“He is not as tolerant, doesn’t like crowds, doesn’t like going out. They become introverted.”

The wife had not heard her husband’s war travails, hadn’t understood their impact and broke into tears.

“That explains so much,” she told Mr Rogers.

As a veteran himself, Mr Rogers said post-traumatic stress has come and gone for him - and it’s been suffered by servicepeople for all time. He deals with it by keeping busy.

He helps with difficulties at veteran families’ homes.

Sometimes he sits and keeps company with war widows, some in their 90s who have endured real hardship and loneliness.

“I feel highly honoured.

They accept a stranger into their home and tell you about their life.”

PARKS Victoria and Yarra Ranges Council are inviting the community to provide feedback on the conceptual options for the future of the former Olinda Golf Course.

Feedback will help inform the development of the Olinda Precinct Plan.

The plan aims to establish a longterm strategy for the former Olinda Golf Course site, including a plan to strengthen the walking connections with the adjoining Olinda township and provide recreational and tourism benefits.

The options to be presented are the result of the first round of public consultation for the Olinda Precinct Plan earlier this year.

To date, ideas put forward in-

clude a new playing field, dog offlead areas, new entry to Rhododendron Gardens, sports courts and more.

Yarra Ranges Mayor, Jason Callinan, encouraged the local community to inspect the suggestions and provide feedback through the consultation process.

“The plan represents a significant investment into the future of our community and it’s really important that residents of the hills districts have put their thoughts in now to ensure the best possible outcome,” he said.

The plans are available on the Parks Victoria website with opportunities to submit feedback available until Monday, 11 July.

VISUAL Communication students from Mater Christi College recently entered a Victoria-wide student art competition, ‘Our Sunset, My World’.

Students from over 100 schools entered artworks for the competition run by ‘Have a Heart Cambodia’.

All six Mater Christi students were selected to have their work exhibited and sold at Federation Square on Saturday, 23 July.

Year 10 student, Madison Winkler, said the Cambodian situation inspired her work.

“My design juxtaposes the developed society that we live in, with that of Cambodian children, by illustrating key factors of everyday living in the two scenarios, through a series of playing cards,” she said.

Another successful entrant, Molly O’Bryan said, “Through my artwork, I wanted to depict the independence of Cambodian children and highlight their vulnerability”.

Candidate regret over comments ANIMAL Justice Party (AJP) candidate Leah Folloni has apologised over comments she made on an online forum, which followed her attendance at a local candidates debate.

Ms Folloni spoke at the La Trobe Candidates Forum at Tecoma on Tuesday 14 June, which was held to give the Dandenong Ranges community greater insight into the candidates and their policies before the upcoming Federal Election.

However, Ms Folloni said she was made to feel unwelcome at the forum, in particular by those who were organising the event.

Afterwards, she described her experiences on an online forum.

“I had heaps of meat eating hills greenies come after me last night,” she wrote.

“At one stage, there were about 100 people yelling and abusing me and the mediator let them do it, so I had to yell back.

“The hills community is a progressive one and a cause such as animal rights should resonate well,” Mr Muratore said.

“Instead, Folloni has undone all the good work the AJP has done from the last State Election.

“Folloni needs to make a public apology to the community.

“If not, the AJP has no choice but to disendorse her.”

Mr Muratore said this was no smear campaign against the candidate.

“I certainly have a leaning to the left, but I was not involved in the organisation of the forum in any way,” he said.

“I found out about it (the forum) on social media and attended simply on the basis that I wanted to hear all candidates.”

“It was awful.”

When asked to explain her comments, Ms Folloni was remorseful.

“I made that comment on a private vegan activist page between friends, and I am still not sure how they got on there to get it, in hindsight I shouldn’t have said it,” she said.

Ms Folloni went on to say there were many against her before she even spoke at the forum, also reiterating her stance there was little mediation.

“When I explained why AJP preferenced (sitting La Trobe member) Jason Wood, and that he led the charge to stop lion trophies being brought into Australia ... it became apparent ... these people had no care about the welfare of animals,” she said.

Attendee Garry Muratore, who viewed the post, described her behaviour as unprofessional and demanded a public apology.

Valuable week of experience

By LARA PERKINS WORK experience for some may bring memories of filing paperwork and doing endless amounts of photocopying.

But for Ferntree Gully local and Presbyterian Ladies College Year 10 student, Lucinda Gibson, her work experience was a bit more exciting than that.

Lucinda had the amazing opportunity to spend a week working for Member for Higgins, Kelly O’Dwyer, during Ms O’Dwyer’s Federal Election campaign.

Lucinda said, before she started, she had no idea what to expect and thought she might be doing just office work.

“The first day was really full on,” Lucinda said.

“I got to meet a lot of senior people in our community and also Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, which was a real privilege.”

Lucinda felt like she was very involved with what was happening around her and found it interesting to go behind the scenes and see how things worked.

“The atmosphere was great, all the people were really friendly and willing to help me,” she said.

Lucinda said she got to do so many different things, from folding letters to typing up political party literature and getting to meet the Prime Minister.

For three of the mornings in that week, Lucinda tagged along with Liberal Party members to help with the election campaign.

Lucinda said it was valuable to

see what went on behind the scenes and to see whether it would be something that might interest her in the future.

Like Lucinda, I have also been doing some work experience during this past week.

I’m a Year 10 student at Luther College in Croydon Hills.

Journalism is something that I’ve been interested in for a little while, so I decided to do work experience at the Mail News Group in Healesville.

Everyone who I met had such a great attitude and was really passionate about what they were doing.

A week on the newspaper has been a great learning experience and a really enjoyable period for me. It has helped me further my interest in journalism.

Big Sister’s eye on us

By PETER DOUGLAS IT WAS a whirlwind visit for Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, who initially visited La Trobe to announce funds for CCTV around the Belgrave commercial precinct, upon the re-election of the Turnbull Government.

But she quickly found herself amid a CFA rally within the town, during which CFA volunteers voiced their concerns over the recent enterprise bargaining agreement.

However, Ms Bishop and her Liberal colleague, La Trobe MP Jason Wood, successfully announced $84,500 for CCTV to deter anti-social behaviour in the area.

Mr Wood said the funds would contribute greatly to safety within the region.

“Everyone has a right to gather safely in their community spaces, and this includes our shopping strips,” said Mr Wood.

The funding has been committed under the Coalition’s $40 million Safer Communities Fund and delivery of the project will be facilitated by the Belgrave Traders Association.

The Safer Communities Fund delivers on the Coalition’s ongoing commitment to keep Australians safe and secure.

Only safe communities can be strong and prosperous, and the best way to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour is to prevent it happening.

The Safer Communities

Fund consists of two streams: Stream one will boost the efforts of identified local governments and community organisations to address crime and anti-social behaviour by funding crime-prevention initiatives (such as fixed and mobile CCTV and lighting).

Stream two will boost efforts to protect schools, pre-schools and community organisations that are facing security risks associated with racial or religious intolerance.

This new fund will build on the previous work the Co-

alition undertook through the Safer Streets Program and the Schools Security Program.

Minister Julie Bishop said the Coalition’s record demonstrated its strong commitment to community safety initiatives.

“The Coalition has now committed more than $100 million to assist local communities in delivering strategies to address crime and anti-social behaviour,” Minister Bishop said.

“We will continue to invest in projects that make our streets, communities and our nation safer.”

Passion for the hills

By PETER DOUGLAS ONE could argue a case of jumping from the fire into the frying pan for La Trobe incumbent, Jason Wood.

The one-time counter terrorism expert and Senior Sergeant with Victoria Police is now serving another term representing the electorate where he grew up and still resides.

He attended Ferny Creek Primary School, Ferntree Gully Technical School and even played a little football with Olinda Football Club.

But he said it was during his time with a local Scout group that he first developed a passion for the adventurous, which includes a passion for cross-country skiing and bushwalking. In fact, he was once a cross-country skiing instructor at Lake Mountain.

He eventually joined Victoria Police, initially drawn to search and rescue, but found out he couldn’t handle underwater diving.

His path in the force eventually led to the organised crime squad, which he said was a real eye-opener.

“There were times in my life I had to live with a firearm under my bed, it was pretty full-on in those days,” he said.

Ultimately, Mr Wood was drawn to political life, which he said had been a rewarding experience. But he said much excitement lay ahead, with plenty of work to be done if he won re-election.

The funds will go towards some greatly needed solar lighting facilities at the club.

“The Solar Communities program will provide funding for groups across Australia to install rooftop solar PV, solar hot water and battery storage systems for community-owned buildings,” Mr Wood said.

The Upper Ferntree Gully Football Club would also receive an additional $10,000 to assist with the cost of installing solar and battery storage.

“The Upper Ferntree Gully Football Club is a safe, supportive and friendly place for children of all ages to learn and play sport," he said.

“It fosters growth and inspires courage for all children of the community."

Mr Wood said the government understood and recognised the important role that Australian communities and households play in Australia’s increase to renewable energy.

“Around 350 community groups are expected to benefit from the expanded program, with $5 million available,” Mr Wood said.

June means cash for community JUNE is becoming an exciting time of year for local community groups, schools and not-for-profit organisations around Monbulk, The Patch and Silvan.

This year at Monbulk and District Community Bank Branch’s Community Investment and Rewards Night, another 19 cheques were handed out.

Nearly $20,000 was contributed back into the township.

Monbulk Primary School received a grant for its new 'Integrating ICT into The Arts Program’.

The program aims to introduce students to ICT in a creative format, focusing on the arts.

Lynn Ordish, Principal at Monbulk Primary School, and Jade Clarkson, the initiator of the program, were very grateful for the $2500 which allowed this program to run.

Many other recipients on the night received ‘Club Rewards’ cheques.

These clubs participate in a partnering program with Monbulk and District Community Bank and many were thankful for the contributions.

Monbulk Rangers Soccer Club is one of the newest partners and was thrilled to receive their cheque for over $2500.

Letters All the way with CFA I WISH to show my support for our CFA volunteers.

The CFA has 60,000 volunteers who are dedicated to saving lives and our community.

In the Dandenong Ranges, we have one of the most fire-prone and dangerous areas in the world.

I am absolutely appalled at how the CFA volunteers have been treated by the Andrews State Government.

These CFA people dedicate their lives to keeping our community safe and a good example was the Black Saturday fire at Upper Ferntree Gully in 2009.

A high-ranking CFA officer said that all of the fires burning on Black Saturday at Upper Ferntree Gully had the most potential for huge loss of life and property because it started at the worst possible time at the worst possible place.

Those CFA volunteers worked their guts out to save our community.

The Andrews Government is now stabbing all of our CFA volunteers in the back.

(Deputy Premier) James Merlino has betrayed our community and sold us out by sacking the CFA board and will give full power to the UFU. God help us next summer.

The UFU will destroy the CFA, and all the 60,000 volunteers will be forced out by a union with hell-bent bullying tactics.

The CFA was started by volunteers and it belongs to volunteers.

I feel so sorry for them; they gave their heart and soul to our community and this is how they are treated, it’s just unforgivable.

We were saved on Black Saturday by them, will we be so lucky next time?

Simon says in it to win it

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS LA TROBE Labor Candidate Simon Curtis has refuted claims printed in The Herald Sun on Thursday 16 June that stated the Federal Labor Party had lost hope of winning the electorate.

“I’ve certainly not given up on La Trobe,” Mr Curtis said.

The claims made in the major metropolitan newspaper cited the ongoing dispute between the CFA and the Victorian Government as badly affecting the Federal branch of the Labor Party.

However, Mr Curtis said he was as dedicated as ever to representing the La Trobe electorate and the dispute should be left to the State Government and the CFA. “I don’t think Federal Labor should step into the dispute,” he said.

“It’s not the business of Federal Par-

liament at all and any federal politician weighing into this issue should step back and let the firefighters do what they need to do for community.”

Mr Curtis also said the level of federal politicisation of the issue had seen firefighters used as a political football.

When questioned about the dispute, Mr Curtis said it was not his role to dictate how the CFA was run or take sides in a state-level industrial relations disagreement.

“Asking me to take sides is like asking which of my kids is my favourite,” he said.

“At the end of the day it’s really import that anyone who puts life their life on the line in a workplace, regardless of volunteer or career, that they are as safe as they can possibly be and I hope that’s what the EBA will achieve.”

Puffing Billy, vintage cars and more at market THREE Gembrook institutions will combine this weekend to showcase some of the best attractions the town has to offer.

The Motorist Vintage Motor Museum, Puffing Billy Railway, and the Gembrook Market will join forces for a free, must-see event right in the heart of the town.

About 20 vintage cars from the All British Classics Car Club will take pride of place along the Puffing Billy station platform between 12.45pm and 2.30pm on 26 June, with the train arriving at 1pm and leaving at 2.45pm.

The monthly market - complete with its sustainable craft,

food and plant stalls - will once again be a hive of activity right next to the station and railway line from 9am to 2pm.

The event is sure to draw big numbers to the town centre including local residents - and visitors - and help to revitalise it as a tourist destination.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles must stop Shredder (Brian Tee), the nefarious leader of the Foot Clan, from unleashing a deadly alien superweapon on the world.

This film did nothing for me,

but speaking objectively, fans of the TMNT franchise should be passably satisfied by this entry, despite its many flaws.

The pacing is fast but uneventful, with long stretches spent pursuing a teleportation Macguffin (a storytelling term for a vague element that drives the plot along) and a pointless detour into the Brazilian rainforest. Stephen Amell, as major supporting character Casey Jones, is an almost uncannily flat actor, the villains are very poorly written and the action scenes, like in the first film, are

FOR Emerald resident and Monbulk jeweller Ken Hunt, painting has always been a part of his life.

From an early age, he would watch his father paint, which eventually inspired him to pick up a paint brush and follow in his father’s footsteps.

Since 2000, Ken has entered the Archibald Prize 13 times.

And his 2016 entry in the Archibalds - of close friend and tennis champion Ian Goolagong - is sure to impress the judges.

Ken met Goolagong while he was on holidays in Cairns and they struck up a friendship.

“We got chatting and then met up in Melbourne,” Ken said.

Mr Goolagong is the National Indigenous Coach for Tennis Australia and is the only male Aboriginal to have played at Wimbledon.

He uses tennis to teach social inclusion and tries to enhance and nurture Indigenous talent in Aboriginal communities.

Ken had been periodically working on the painting for 18 months and finished it earlier this year, but said that it took

incoherent jumbles of motion.

But the turtles’ personalities are mercifully toned down this time; they’re actually likeable now (except for the ever-obnoxious Michaelangelo), and the plot contains a fairly engaging story arc about respecting your partners and working as a team.

Overall, this film effectively captures the essence of its characters and the franchise’s lighthearted, adventurous spirit.

It’s ultimately a decent TMNT movie, but can’t stand very well on its own merits.

Top five not set in concrete

By CAMERON HUTCHISON IT’S now the halfway mark of the season and it’s time for the clubs to assess their season so far, count the injuries, weigh up the opposition and get ready for the return bouts to come.

Surprisingly, there were three Division 1 sides that kicked exactly the same score.

Two of them got wins for their clubs and one was a loss.

Olinda maintains a slim one-game advantage on the rest, with Wandin and Healesville sharing second spot, while Upwey and Woori Yallock make up the five.

Division 2 has Yarra Glen on top with a one-game advantage, but it’s looking a bit shaky.

Gembrook, Seville and Kinglake are sharing second spot, with Yea, Yarra Junction and Alexandra sharing fifth spot.

Wandin holds top spot in the Under 18s, with Mt Evelyn, Emerald, Upwey and Yarra Glen sharing fourth spot.

Olinda and Wandin share the top in A Grade Netball, followed by Woori Yallock, Warburton and Belgrave.

Division 2 has Seville and Yarra Glen sharing top spot, with Yarra Junction, Yea and Alexandra making up the top five.

The top five in all competitions is certainly nowhere near set.

It is going to be an interesting run to the finals.

DIVISION 1 SENIORS Healesville 14.11(95) d Belgrave 8.11(59) Healesville have continued their winning streak by easily accounting for Belgrave on Saturday.

Healesville started off in splendid fashion, kicking seven goals straight to take a handy 36-point lead into the first break.

Healesville kicked 3.8 in the second half to Belgrave’s 4.7, which in the end made no difference to the end result, with Healesville running out 36-point winners.

Healesville take on Upwey next week for a clear break in the five.

Warburton Millgrove 13.11(89) d Emerald 10.5(65) Warburton had a solid win over Emerald and have given themselves some much needed breathing space going into the second half of the season.

This game was close up to half-time and some may have thought that there was an upset in the making.

Unfortunately for Emerald, Warburton came out all fired up and kicked 7.3 to 3.2 to take a commanding 28-point lead into the last quarter.

Emerald rallied somewhat and outscored Warburton in the last quarter, but a third-quarter slump had set their fate heading into the last quarter.

Mount Evelyn’s kicking woes continued during this game. With 10 scoring shots to four in the first quarter, Mount Evelyn should have sewn up the game, but it was credit to Monbulk who played some hard fought footy to upset Mount Evelyn’s forwards in the first half to stay in touch with the hosts at half-time. Only kicking four behinds in the third quarter to the Mounters 1.2 did not help Monbulk bridge the gap.

They rallied in the last and outscored Mount Evelyn, but the run was left too late.

The lead increased to 17 points at half-time with a low scoring quarter by both teams. Olinda held Upwey goalless in the third, with the hosts increasing their lead to 28 points at three quarter time. Another low scoring quarter in the last did not help Upwey make any inroads to the lead, with Olinda running out 36 point winners.

Wandin kicked 5.5 to 2.1 in the first, and had a lead of 22 points into the second quarter.

Woori Yallock came out and played some inspiring football and caught Wandin by surprise kicking 4.7 while holding Wandin goalless, which is something Wandin would not be used to.

Woori Yallock’s lead should have been much more than seven points at half-time, but the goal kicking bogey was still around.

Wandin regrouped in the third and kicked 6.3 to arrest the lead back to 11 points at three quarter time.

Woori Yallock fought back in the last, outscoring Wandin by nine points but just could not get over the line in the end, with Wandin defeating Woori Yallock by two points.

It started out with a closely fought first quarter with Gembrook holding a slim lead of six points at quarter time.

Gembrook came out and blindsided Yarra Glen in the second quarter and left them in their wake kicking 4.3 to 3 behinds to take a commanding lead of 32 points into the third quarter.

The lead extended to 37 points at three-quarter time.

Yarra Glen needed to produce an amazing last quarter to get this game back, but Gembrook kept up their relentless attack on the ball and kicked another 4.2 to 1.2 to come away with a huge confidence building win for the Brookers.

Yarra Glen will be looking to bounce back when they meet Kinglake next week.

Three goals apiece in the last quarter saw Kinglake get an impressive 36-point win over Alexandra. Kinglake now share second spot with Gembrook and Seville after their big win on Saturday.

They host Yarra Glen next week that will be for the top spot.

Motoring Bonnici to victor y

By DEAN THOMPSON NAGAMBIE Speedway Club member Lennie Bonnici, best-known in recent seasons as a Crash and Bash racer, piloted his ex-Mike Burke Super Sedan to victory in the 35th running of the Alexandra Speedway Club 100 Lap Derby.

His consistent run rewarded him, as race incidents removed Steve Lincoln and Daniel Scott along with Brendan and Damien Miller out of contention in the run home.

The 100 Lap Derby this season attracted a sensational array of racecraft and an even more impressive list of drivers with all sorts of experience to the event, fans came from as far away as Western Australia to see the local Truck, Rod and Ute Show and then take a look down at the speedway.

In among the competitors were defending champion and former Australian 350ci Sprintcar champion Tony Moule, former Australian Junior Sedan champion Brock Atkins, multiple times winners David Erickson and Luke Fallon, and Camden NSW racer Ross Nicastri who also happened to be involved with the major sponsor DIY Auto Parts Broadmeadows.

After 40 heat races were completed two drivers, Steve Lincoln from Broadford and Dan Scott from Kilmore had won four heats out of their five, three drivers all from Team Miller Motorsports based in Pakenham being brothers Brendan and Damien Miller and mate Brad Warren had three wins apiece, with a handful of others with two wins.

Bonnici himself won one heat and it was a beauty, when he set a new one-lap track record on the short circuit dogleg with a 32.535 time in the 17th heat of the weekend, it was not beaten in the next 23.

The closest heat race finish was the very first heat of the weekend with Leigh Bourke in a 250 Crossflow powered Cortina taking a win over Bonnici in his LS1 powered chassis car by .161 while five other heats finished with less than a second between the first two drivers as they crossed the line.

Scott won the fastest heat of the weekend in heat nine with a complete time of three minutes 20.869 seconds.

The big race itself had twists and turns right throughout - Aaron Bunton left the track before the race even started, Shane O’Loughlin’s car caught fire and crashed in the latter stages, turning the race upside down.

Brendan Miller led lap one before team-mate Brad Warren took the lead on the second lap.

Steve Lincoln in his EH Holden with a big 350 under the hood, assumed control on lap three before Damien Miller in an LS1 powered Commodore snatched the lead in traffic as Lincoln was shuffled back behind Damien Miller, Warren, Brendan Miller, Scott and Lenny Bates.

Damien Miller had the race by the scruff of its neck leading from lap 10 to 65 before he turned himself the wrong direction coming out of the dogleg on lap 66 as Lincoln flew past and back into the lead.

On lap 72 Lincoln and Scott, mates off the track, came together in the dogleg when there was a tangle up with a slower driver. There was nothing Scott could do about the contact, and Lincoln wasn’t happy as it caused his car a flat tyre and damage to Scott’s car occurred also.

Brendan Miller assumed the lead from lap 73 and his brother Damien was behind him chasing.

Racers are racers and once they put the helmet on

the little things are forgotten and Damien Miller tried to pass his brother in the spot with the most chance of things going wrong - the dogleg - and both cars tangled up, Brendan lost the lead and laps as they both exited the track.

Team-mate Warren hit the lead and that lasted one lap with Bonnici taking the lead from lap 81, Bonnici despite what appeared to be the engine boiling in the latter laps motored on to take the win from Warren by 12.8 seconds, a huge victory putting that amount of distance between him and second place over the last 19 laps.

Zac Swanson from Ballarat was fantastic in his underpowered Commodore, staying on the lead lap and finishing third much to the delight of his supporters with Andrew Jordan from Melbourne’s Eastern Suburbs in fourth, Colin Lincoln from Beveridge in fifth all on the lead lap, number 100.

Bonnici was fairly reserved in his victory as he soaked it in.

“Thankyou very much to everybody at O’Brien Racing for their support. I know this is a big event, I have not quite got my head around everything yet, however it is a special race to win," he said.

The Victorian Short Circuit Championship for Speedway Sedan Australia Juniors was as always sensational, with the youngsters from the age of 10 to 17 wowing the massive crowd with their skills. Despite their 1200cc powered machines, the fastest driver was only three and a half seconds a lap slower than the fastest V8 machine in the 100 Lap Derby.

Both Caleb Lincoln and Jackson Lunt took four wins apiece out the 10-heat races.
