THE WARWICK RSL Sub-branch is set to celebrate its 100th anniversary next year, with those celebrations getting off to an early start at the weekend.

The club, which is now Queensland’s oldest continuing subbranch, co-hosted a lunch to celebrate the centenary of the RSL in Australia.

Club president, John Skinner, said the Allora, Killarney and Warwick sub-branches hosted the luncheon at the RSL Memorial Club with more than 250 attending.

“The function room was filled to almost capacity with 275 people including sub-branch members from at least eight sub-branches,” Mr Skinner said.

“We also had a large number of community organisations represented from throughout the region including Ambulance, SES, Queensland Fire and Rescue, Queensland Police, Warwick City Band, Warwick Thistle Pipe Band, 11th Light Horse Warwick/Montrose Troop, National Service Association, several schools from throughout the district, Killarney Co-op, Ulysses Club (Warwick Branch) and many others.

“Most of these are groups we work with during the year for Anzac Day parades, Remembrance Day, etc.

“Guest speaker was Queensland RSL president Stewart Cameron, who gave a brief overview of the history of what has become the RSL and then went on to speak about what the RSL does today with about

“The review of these arrangements was done in consultation with staff and is part of council’s ongoing commitment to identifying efficiencies and savings within the organisation.

“The trial will reduce existing on-call manning of 18 personnel to eight on-call staff from Monday to Saturday, and four on-call staff on Sundays.”

SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council (SDRC) will trial new oncall arrangements for critical afterhours council services, for a threemonth period, starting on 21 June.

SDRC chief executive officer David Keenan said the new arrangements included a reduction of the number of staff rostered as afterhours on-call personnel, and offered considerable operational savings.

“The trial is the result of a comprehensive review by council staff of the after-hours on-call person-

Mr Keenan emphasised that the trial arrangements would ensure that critical council services are supported effectively and appropriately, while ensuring savings.

“The new system will deliver enormous savings estimated at $200,000 per year,” he said.

“To achieve a comparable sum through active revenue-raising would require a rate rise of about one per cent, and we know that simply would not be well received by our ratepayers and the Southern

Downs community.

“Instead, council is engaging a proactive approach to drive continuous improvement and further productivity gains through revised systems and processes, such as the new on-call arrangements.”

Mr Keenan said the council anticipated that the on-call changes would boost productivity through a more effective, targeted use of the skill sets of staff within the organisation.

Labor in the box seat as big fields enter contest

By TANIA PHILLIPS LABOR’S Dave Kerrigan has drawn top spot on the ballot for next month’s Federal Election for the seat of Maranoa.

Held by retiring Deputy Speaker and Liberal National Party member Bruce Scott, Maranoa - which is named for the Maranoa River which passes through the area - will have an new member whatever happens on 2 July.

The new member will be just the 10th since Federation and with the seat being held safely by the Liberal National/Country Party since the 1940s, Southern Downs based Liberal National Party candidate David Littleproud is favoured to win. However Mr Littleproud drew seventh on the ballot of eight candidates.

Family First candidate Myfanwy Schnek was second on the ballot, with Green Katherine Hompes third, Rise Up Australia Party candidate Sherrilyn Church fourth, Luke Arbuckle of the Country Minded Party was fifth ahead of Katter’s Australian Party candidate Rick Gurnett, Mr Little Proud seven and Pauline Hanson’s One Nation candidate Lynette Keehn in eighth spot Maranoa covers an area of about 731,297 square kilometres from the Northern Territory, South Australian and New South Wales borders to Diamantina in the north and Nanango, Warwick and Stanthorpe in the east. “It has been an enormous privilege to serve as the Member for Maranoa. It has been a time in my life, and that of my family, that I will never forget.”

Meanwhile, across the Border in New England - which includes Tenterfield - an interesting battle is expected particularly between sitting member and deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce and former member Tony Windsor.

Mr Windsor has drawn seventh on the ballot while Mr Joyce is just behind him in eighth.

Ten candidates have nominated for New England with Robert Walker of the Online Direct Democracy in first spot ahead of Stan Colefax of the Christian Democratic Party and David Mailler of the CountryMinded party. Liberal Democrat Peter Whelan is fourth, Labor’s David Ewings is fifth with Independent Rob Taber in sixth, the Independent Tony Winsdor seven, Nationals Joyce in eight, followed by Green Mercurius Goldstein with Independent Phillip Cox at the bottom.

In brief Tax scam STANTHORPE police are fielding a number of inquiries from people reporting a scam allegedly involving the Australian Tax Office.

According to officer in charge of Stanthorpe police Sergeant Mark Ireland there has been a number of phone calls purportedly from the Australian Tax Office and originating from an 02 area code.

“The caller states that monies are owed from an outstanding tax debt and that payment can only be made via the use of ITUNE cards,” he said.

“Two victims that police are aware of have told police that upon believing the caller they have then gone and purchased a large number of ITUNE cards from local stores and provided the activation code to the person committing the fraud, amounts of approximately $2000 and $400 respectively.

“Further checks after the event have established that the call was fraudulent.

“If you received such a call or are a victim report in on line immediately on website www. acorn.gov.au.”

Historic house fire POLICE and emergency services responded to a house fire at Glenlyon historic property at Glenlyon Dam Road, Glenlyon, about 10.30pm on Friday.

While fire units from Texas and Stanthorpe were unable to save the main homestead, they were able to prevent the fire engulfing nearby guest accommodation.

The fire is not being treated as suspicious by investigators with the origin of the fire believed to be an electrical fault.

Assault charges AN ASSAULT between two males inside IGA about 1.50pm Friday resulted in swift action by police with a 50-year-old Cottonvale man being arrested a short time later and charged with assault occasioning bodily harm.

Stanthorpe police said the two males, who were known to each other, met in an aisle inside IGA at which time the offender pushed the victim and a fight began.

Gift helps celebrate the music A DONATION of $500 will be a big help as the Warwick City Band celebrate 150 years of musical entertainment in Warwick.

The band, established in 1866, claims to be the oldest continuous brass band in Queensland and no other band has challenged the claim.

The timely donation came from the Warwick RSL Subbranch.

Sub-branch president John Skinner said the band had been involved with Anzac Day, Remembrance Day and the Vietnam Veteran’s Day activities in Warwick for as long as he could remember.

“I came to my first Anzac Day parade here about 35 years ago

and the band were involved then, just as they are now,” he said.

“Bandmaster Brendon Babington is referred to as ‘Mr Reliable’ by those of us who organise many of these activities because he has never let us down.

“Not only is he a fine bugler but he arranges for the band to play in the Anzac Day parade and back-up to play for the singers as well. We’d be lost without the contribution of the band members and this donation to their anniversary celebration is just a small way in which can show our appreciation.”

Mr Skinner made the surprise presentation to the band during Monday night practice at the band hut.

“DAM good news as Feds kick in $4 million for water” was the promising heading of the 2 June Free Times article. That made me think I was wrong to criticise the previous councils for wasting over $5 million on the proposed Emu Swamp Dam. But after reading the full article, I realised that those due diligence investigations could be more expensive than the amount granted. So how much more will it cost and how many more years needed for the required paperwork, before any soil can be moved at that site? Judging by the $85,000 that the council paid recently for a simple public survey, this could be a much larger amount wasted again. Therefore the council should not spend more money on the proposed new dam before our present water supply can be guaranteed.

Our council should urgently talk to the government regarding the sensible use of that money at the Storm King Dam, to increase its water storage capacity and thereby in a long drought we would not need to freight drinking water from Warwick to Stanthorpe. More to the point, the costly paperwork should not be relevant to the extension of the existing dam’s capacity, therefore the actual work could commence at our present dam without much delay.

MOTHER’S Day was extra special for Glen Alpin resident Michelle Repo with the perfectly timed arrival of her third baby.

Little Jesse Jarmo Repo was born on Mother’s Day, Sunday 8 May, at the Stanthorpe Hospital, weighing 3.72 kilograms.

He was helped into the world by midwife Tracey Gunnlaugsson who, co-incidently, welcomed her own son into the world on Mother’s Day 26 years ago also at the Stanthorpe Hospital.

“Tracey was amazing and she helped so much, and thankfully I had Jesse just before the end of her shift,” Mrs Repo said.

“It was a lovely experience.

Tracey was such an excellent midwife, and I could not have done it without her encouragement and direction. All along she ‘knew’ I was having a boy, even though, we did not find out the sex of the baby.

“I was due on the 16 May, but it didn’t occur to me that he could arrive on Mother’s Day. It was a nice surprise and something that both myself and Tracey have now experienced.”

Jesse is the third child for Michelle and her husband Markus, and a little brother to 10-year-old Mika and 12-yearold Faithe.

So far this year, Stanthorpe birthing suites have welcomed 41 babies.

Michelle Repo and her new baby Jesse Jarmo who was born on Mother s Day at Stanthorpe Hospital with the help of midwife Tracey Gunnlaugsson.

The suites underwent a refurbishment a few years ago, with Ms Gunnlaugsson delivering the first baby in the new rooms on September 2014.

“I had my son at the Stanthorpe Hospital on Mother’s Day in 1990,” Ms Gunnlaugsson said.

“And I’ve now helped two mums deliver on Mother’s Day, which is really special.”

Ms Gunnlaugsson has been a midwife for six years, after she completed her training and study in Toowoomba.

“I enjoy helping women succeed in their wishes and bringing new life into the world. It’s a job you have to have a passion for because otherwise you wouldn’t do it - there’s lots of working back late and going the extra mile for mums.”

Students get with program STUDENTS at Warwick’s West School are offered a rich program of extra-curricular activities including technology, but for Grade 2 recently technology meant a history lesson.

The young students had to wrap their minds around ‘ancient’ telephone technology in their history unit with the video showing people using their finger to dial rotary telephones.

With this in mind, teacher Terri Le Page wanted students to have the chance to explore technology and its applications in a supportive environment.

She runs a lunchtime Technology Club, where up to 16 students show up to learn about ozobots, probots and beebots.

“The students utilise ‘Scratch’ to

design and program their own interactive software games and animations,” Ms Le Page said.

“They can learn to use code to program a probot to problem solve or draw shapes with certain criteria, or under the ozobots unit, use simple code to colour code and instruct a robot.”

“The universal nature of technology in our lives, our schools, our communities and our homes mean that as part of the education process, we need to help students acquire the skills they need to survive in a complex, highly technological society,” she said.

“Integrating technology into classrooms means more than teaching basic computer skills.”

Living in a material world YEAR one students at West Warwick School have been learning about materials that objects are made from and what can be done to physically change them.

They have been investigating materials that are rigid, materials that are flexible, waterproof, and will fold and cut.

Teacher Margaret Bernoth said that for their science project, children had to choose a material to make a boat that can float and carry marbles.

She said there were some successes... and some funny outcomes!

State moves for quad bike safety NSW Farmers has welcomed the State Government’s announcement of a $2 million package for quad bike safety improvement rebates.

NSW Farmers Industrial Relations chairman Richard Chamen said the association supports a tangible government commitment to assist the farming community with quad bike safety.

“While the quad bike is an undeniably an important vehicle on farms, it is also the leading cause of deaths on farms,” Mr Chamen said.

“In 2015 we had 22 fatalities in Australia and 15 of those occurred on farms.

“Every fatality is indicative of the hundreds of injuries related to quads.

“Many farmers have either experienced a quad bike related injury or know someone who has had a quad bike related injury.

“The quad bike has long been known as ATV or all-terrain vehicle and that is where it has been misconstrued.

“There are limitations to quad bike use. If you don’t take precautions and operated it with care, it can turn dangerous very quickly.

“There is no better time for farmers to reassess their own use of quad bikes on farms and consider adopting one or more of the recommended safety improvements offered as part of the rebate package.”

“When we were initially approached to give comments on the rebate initiative we supported the idea of the regulator supporting industry to make safety improvements through awareness raising, assistance and education.

“This is why we participated in the tender to administer the rebate. NSW Farmers will be administering the rebates package which will be available from mid-July.”

Cracker night all right Casey’s tips

By TANIA PHILLIPS CRACKER night at Tenterfield is a big night for the young and old, and this year was no exception.

There was plenty of music, entertainment and fun for the whole family at the Lions Club’s annual event.

There was also plenty of creativity as locals and visitors put their thinking caps on to come up with some spectacular firedrums - including Andy Whitlock’s winning Darth Vadar creation.

And of course to end the night their was a huge fireworks display to light up the sky. And not one to miss out on the fun photographer Terry West was there to capture the event.

Bidding for a bargain ALLORA came alive for the 41st Allora Community Auction on Sunday morning.

About 200 volunteers from 30 local charities worked together booking goods in, assisting the auctioneers and feeding the crowds.

The hours worked by the various charity members were added up and

the profits were divided accordingly with about 40 per cent of total sales going to the charities.

Throughout Sunday numerous auctioneers worked throughout the day with three operating at a time.

Festival spreads the jazz around JUMPERS and Jazz in July is not just all about Warwick, with many towns and venues around the Southern Downs planning events.

Those events include Jazz on the Mountain at Bestbrook Mountain resort, aimed at being enjoyed by a bunch of friends or being a family day out.

The event will feature an afternoon with live acoustic jazz group The O’Brien Trio, and an authentic country experience with the opportunity to make hot damper and fresh butter washed down with genuine billy tea.

Wine tasting is also an option. Kids will enjoy saying hello to the horses and other farm animals - and perhaps join in the wagon ride.

Meanwhile, Killarney will turn on two great weekends.

The famous Killarney Bonfire night promises perhaps the biggest bonfire they can muster and the chance to chat with friends around the amazing metal “firey giants” (fire drum) creations.

Meanwhile, the Killarney Hotel proprietors invite everyone to kick back and relax with Pandora Karavan and her unique gypsy flavoured jazz, along with hot food and cold beer.

For those who are keenly awaiting the great array of all things creative which Jumpers and Jazz offers every year, Leah Kelly, organiser of “Meet the Makers” at Allora, the “prettiest little town on the Downs”, promises a diverse array of crafts with artisans on hand for “show and tell” and items for sale.

Leah creates colourful “Cabochon” glass beads for various decorating purposes and will be revealing her creative secrets to visitors, hosting workshops through the week.

Leah is proud of the diversity of crafts people can experience at the event.

“All our artisans on the day are from the Downs. Other fascinating items include stunning silk-dyed scarves, natural soaps, popular paper

beads, and wool enthusiasts should enjoy watching creations being worked on an original ’70s knitting machine,” she said.

The Old Allora Shire Hall will hold a museum open day.

For history buffs, this will be a memorable visit as Allora district holds some of Queensland’s oldest recorded memories.

Add live jazz by favourites Lorraine Stanley and the ever popular “Saxy Lady” and some home cooking.

The Mt Colliery surrounds will host the CWA timber-themed craft and photography display, featuring the outstanding work from the Allora Photography Club alongside the exquisite items by local woodworkers.

THE yarnbombers of the Southern Downs are almost ready to spin a yarn about a knitted garden - or at least they are preparing to put their work on display.

Over the weekend the group worked hard putting together more than 400 squares according to team leader Loretta Grayson of the Warwick Art Gallery which form part of this year’s Jazz and Jumpers in July major installation - 'Yarntopia'.

“The green squares are part of the Warwick Art Gallery yarnbombing team’s big Yarntopia project for Jumpers and Jazz in July,” she said.

“Each year our team creates a large-scale knitted and crocheted installation for the festival. The 'Knitchen' in 2014 and

GET ready to get in the groove with this year’s jazz program for Warwick’s quirky winter festival, Jumpers and Jazz in July being released this week.

The giant jigsaw of jazz performers has been pieced together, mixing festival favourites with new names.

Jumpers and Jazz in July festival advisory team chairwoman Karina Devine is delighted with the variety of acts engaged for this year’s festival.

“We will see the return of The Freud Squad and The Blue Violets, who have contributed to the vibe and energy our festival is famous for,” Ms Devine said.

“We also have crowd favourites Dezzie D and the Stingrayz and The Well Swung Daddies returning and playing several gigs.”

Together with these return acts, is a great line-up of newcomers including The Con Artists who are headlining this year’s Winter Dinner event. Held in the historic Town Hall, the evening is a night to taste and experience the Southern Downs region’s premier food and wine, while enjoying this 18-piece orchestra from Griffith University that showcases Brisbane’s bemerging talent.

The festival launch party won’t disappoint, according to Ms Devine, with Dezzie D and the Stingrayz taking the audience back to the '40s and '50s era with class, sass and provocative tunes.

“Festival attendees can expect to see some of Australia’s finest jazz musicians descend on community stages and private venues throughout the region, in unique and engaging event formats,” Ms Devine said.

This year's jazz program for Jumpers and Jazz in July was supported by the Regional Arts Development Fund, a partnership between the Queensland Government and Southern Downs Regional Council to support local arts and culture.

Well credentialled interim tourism, events chief named

Dance lessons get the joint rockin’ ROCK 'n' roll has arrived in Tenterfield, and those who have succumbed are singing its praises.

Tenterfield Think Fit’s Karen Wells raised the idea of holding rock 'n' roll dance classes, under the umbrella of Adult Community Education and the idea caught on.

Karen said the classes have now been going for a few months but the number of attendees increases each time.

“One keen participant said she dragged along a begrudging husband to the second class, and he’s now looking forward to each class because he has realised its fun, it’s not a competition and that everyone is there for the same reason, to have fun,” she said.

The group meets at 2pm on a Saturday afternoon, and are led by local enthusiasts Phyllis and Gordon Jones who share their knowledge and expertise on the genre.

“They’re very professional but also great fun,” Karen said.

“Also rock 'n' roll does increase fitness there are no lifts involved. The dancers do, however, tend to raise a sweat so dress lightly.

“You can come along with a partner or without, just bring a sense of adventure. Its great fun if you can bring a partner along and learn together, but isn’t essential.

“Tenterfield is not the only town returning to rock 'n' roll, with other clubs on the Gold Coast and in Brisbane keen to join up for a party so there may be organised dances on the horizon.”

A FORMER director of international marketing for Tourism and Events Queensland has been named as the new interim co-ordinator for the Southern Downs Regional Council’s Economic Development, Major Events and Tourism Unit.

Mike Mahoney will take up the position tomorrow, managing the transition of services from Destination Southern Downs to Southern Downs Regional Council.

Southern Downs mayor Tracy Dobie said his role was to ensure that the Visitor Information Centres were offering services to visitors and that major events were being well supported.

“Mike’s background is impressive and demonstrates his significant knowledge of the tourism and events sectors, as well as his familiarity with regional development,” she said.

“Mike is well known within government networks and the industry, and he specialises in the development of tourism product and marketing.”

Mr Mahoney has more than 35 years of experience in the regional development and tourism sectors, including board roles with Tourism Sunshine Coast, Tourism Whitsundays and Townsville Enterprise. Mike has also held the roles of regional director Tropical North Queensland as well as director international marketing for Tourism and Events Queensland.

Additionally, he wrote the Regional Development Strategy for Logan City Council.

“Further, Mr Mahoney has established relationships with Tourism and Events Queensland staff as well as Southern Queensland Country Tourism staff, which all bodes well for ensuring that the Southern Downs is highlighted to key decision makers across State Government and the sector,” she said.

The mayor emphasised that in the first few weeks Mr Mahoney would be working hard to ensure a seamless transition of services from Destination Southern Downs to the council.

“Mike will be making himself available to engage with and seek input from tourism business owners and managers as to appropriate and effective marketing campaigns that highlight the strengths of the region,” she said.

Earlier this month, the council had announced Susan Tyrell however they were unable to facilitate her temporary release from her current job in the Department of State Development due to new additional requirements in her existing role.

Once he starts, Mr Mahoney is expected to undertake interviews for the recently advertised Visitor Information Centre officers, for which council has received a very strong response.

THE Queensland Regional State School Football Championships played in Stanthorpe last weekend were a great success. While parents and supporters were left to deal with the cold and blustery conditions, there were some good performances on the pitch.

State convenor Martin Hodgson said 50 team officials, 360 players from 12 Queensland regions and their supporters arrived at Stanthorpe for the carnival.

Stanthorpe was represented in the Darling Downs sides. Brayden Spiller and Vasilise Erceg played in the Under 12 Darling Downs boys side which was placed third overall in the competition. The squad certainly punched above their weight in the competition and won the Leschke trophy for the highest-placed country regional team.

One of the most impressive players in the Darling Downs girls team was Ballandean player Lauren Coelli. The young keeper showed plenty of skill and talent in her matches. The Darling Downs girls team finished sixth in the girls competition.

The carnival showcased the outstanding sporting facilities in Stanthorpe, and it was great to see some good old-fashioned cross code co-operation.

Mr Hodgson was full of praise for the support the carnival received from the junior and senior rugby league, Football Stanthorpe, Ballandean Soccer Club, Inter, United, City and Carlton and Stanthorpe Cricket.

With such an array of outstanding facilities in Stanthorpe, let’s hope we can attract more of these type of events which provide such an economic boost to the region.

Cowboys Brodie Quirk scored right on half time to give the Cowboys a 16-12 lead. A try to Dennis Burgyone shortly after the break handed the Hawks back the lead.

The game was a real arm wrestle as the Cowboys hit back to take the lead back through a try from Joe Fuimaono. With the game going from end to end, Dennis Burgyone grabbed his second try of the game to give the Hawks back the lead.

The turning point in the game came seven minutes before full time, when the Hawks lost the ball from the scrum only to see Joe Fuimaono swoop and score his third try of the match.

The Hawks were their own worst enemy, turning the ball over on several occasions on the first tackle, however they had several chances to win the game and right on the full time siren their winger Riley Godwin went within inches of scoring. It was an impressive win by the Cowboys

Jim Mitchell grabbed the pin shot on the 17th and one of the meat trays on offer also headed home with Jim to Dalveen. Toby Steele took the pro pin. Len Leigh completed the proceedings by cleaning up with the last meat tray.

CENTRAL CROWS SELECTION FOR YOUNG GREMLIN STANTHORPE Gremlins under 16 player Matt

Murphy has been named in the Central Crows side to play in the Queensland under 16 trials in Toowoomba on 30 June.

Murphy has been selected as a front row forward in the side which will come together on the Sunshine Coast for a four-day training camp prior to the trials. Teams from all QRL divisions will play in the State trials.

Murphy, who plays in the Gremlins Under 16 side coached by David Fleming, said he was excited to be selected in the side. “I’ve been playing league since I was six years old, and this is the first Rep team I have ever made, so it is fantastic,” said the Stanthorpe State High School student.

Murphy a Maroons supporter, identified Corey Parker as his favourite Queensland player and when asked why said, “Because he always puts in,” and it’s hard to argue with that.

With talent scouts sure to be on the hunt at the trials, an eye-catching performance may have Murphy following in the footsteps of Michael Hancock and Billy Moore.

VISITING GATEBALLERS BOOST NUMBERS THE Stanthorpe Gateballers hosted a visiting group from the Toowoomba Mallet Sports Club last Friday. The Toowoomba club has been playing gateball for many years and the visit provided local players a chance to learn a great deal more about the tactics of the game.

The visiting group boosted the numbers and both courts were fully occupied with 19 players involved in a round robin of games with teams divided into a mix of visiting and local players.

In association croquet, Margaret Dickenson

and Joy Newman went head to head in a game that finished early with the scores at 15-all.

The pairing of Val Shepherd and Jenny Tunbridge scored a 20-17 win over Andrea Denkewitz and Grace Howard in their doubles game with Val Shepherd and Grace Howard both snaring breaks of four in an entertaining game. In the remaining game, Pat Schnoor scored two breaks of four as she and Carol Verwey scored the full 26, defeating Heather Widderick and Effie Russell 13.

Golf croquet players were out in force last Wednesday taking advantage of kinder playing conditions and played two games of doubles with more experienced players partnering the newbies in the group.

Val Fancourt and Bev Sullivan defeated Dianne Wren and Justin Liddy 10-6. Bev Sullivan top scored with six hoops and Val shot a hoop in one in this game. The second group played a very tactical game. Elaine Brown and John Castles narrowly overcame Bill Golding and Marian Castles. The final score in a nail- biter, 7 -6. Elaine top scored in this game with six hoops.

Games after the break were played to the best score at finishing time. Bill Golding and Bev Sullivan had a 13-10 win over Elaine Brown and Justin Liddy. Bev Sullivan top scored with 10 hoops and Elaine Brown claimed a hoop in one. Dianne Wren and Marian Castles had a narrow 10-9 win over newcomer John Castles and Val Shepherd. In this game, Shepherd shot her second hoop in one for the day while Dianne Wren top scored with a total of six hoops.

Supporters kept warm any way they could find at last weekend’s Qld State Schools Football Carnival in Stanthorpe.

Stanthorpe representatives in the Darling Downs squad Vasilise Erceg and Brayden Spiller both played well in their games.

Gremlins under-16 player Matt Murphy has been chosen in the Central Division Crows under-16 side.

HAWKS TOO GOOD IN PRESIDENTS CUP THE Gatton Reserve Grade had a comprehensive win over the Cowboys in the Reserve Grade President’s Cup game. TRL chairman Brian Gilroy was on hand to present the first trophy of the season to the Hawks.

The Hawks led 14-0 at half time and shut Cowboys out of the second half to win convincingly 36-0.

Despite going into the game with a strong side the Cowboys suffered injuries to two of their players in the opening minutes and were on the back foot from early in the game.

GOOD FIELD FOR SATURDAY COMP THIRTY-ONE players hit the greens in Stanthorpe last Saturday for Single Stroke competition.

Winner of the Men’s competition with a score of nett 66 was Reno Piovesan. Alan Kerr was this week’s runner-up carding a nett 67. Keith Allen played a beautiful shot on the 3rd/12th and was

rewarded with the pin shot while Santo Cavallaro had the pin shot at 17.

Luke Reardon and Steve Kay claimed the pro pins and after another great shot at the third, Keith Allen made birdie and was the only taker.

Rundowns went to Mark McCosker, Trevor Ludlow and Luke Reardon.

A score of Nett 72 ensured a win in the Ladies competition for Nikki Rossow with Lynette Ludlow runner-up. Ludlow also won the Ladies pin shot and the approach shot. Rundowns went to Kay Webb and Madeline Jarman.

A single stableford sponsored by Tom and Trish Fittock has been programmed for Saturday and players will also be competing for the Finch Cup. The time sheet is on the board at the clubhouse. To help with catering, get your names in early.

BUSY BUSY DAY WITH three ranges operating concurrently, it was certainly a hive of activity on the Inglewood range.

In the Rimfire Rifle event - a 50m Benchrest event, Ray Dudgeon shot well to take a win over

Ross Jackson and Stephanie Jackson.

Monica White was too strong for the opposition in the 25 metre pistol rimfire. She outscored Richard White and Peter Jones.

In the Single Action competition it was a win to Wild Bill Fisher. In second spot was Buckshot E. Brown of Texas and Kat Fischer finished in third spot.

With a weather forecast of cold and wet conditions next Sunday, the competition could well be a coffee drinking comp beside the pot belly stove, however in the vent some people want to venture away from the warmth, we understand, and organisers have also scheduled Muzzle loading and Centre fire events.

SOLID ROUND REWARDED AFTER playing a solid round in the Single Stableford competition at Wallangarra last Saturday, Denis McMeniman finished with a score of 43 points and was rewarded with a win. McMeniman just snuck home for a win with over second-

placed Jamie Purcell and Shane Purcell in third place. Purcell and Purcell Inc. finished the round with 42 points.

Four pin shots went off with Hampstead, Blair, Thompson and Jamie Purcell all tasting success.

This Saturday is the annual Patron’s Day event at Wallangarra. A two ball Ambrose competition sponsored by the Wallangarra Store has been scheduled for the following weekend 25 June.

RAHEEN PURCHASES SNIPPETS FILLY BASIL Nolan’s Raheen stud was one of the top purchasers at last week’s mammoth nine days of selling at the Magic Millions National Sales.

On the opening day of the sale, Nolan purchased a filly by Snitzel for $220,00 after it initially was passed in at$210,000. The filly was the top-priced yearling on the first day of the sale.

Her purchase came shortly after Snippets Land who was bred and sold by Darling Downs breeding nursery Raheen Stud upstaged some more fancied opponents to win the Group 3 BRC Sprint. Snippets Lad is trained in Sydney by Peter and Paul Snowden.

TIGERS TOP OF THE TABLE THE Tenterfield Tigers has a big win over the Killarney Cutters on the weekend and now sit at the top of the BRL table with a better for and against record.

In cold conditions, the Tigers were simply too strong across the park for the Cutters. Club journeyman Coedie Tandy was at his best, weaving his magic against his former club.

The Cutters did well to field 18 players on Saturday and continue their rebuilding phase.

At the halfway point in the season, the Tigers and Roosters both have 14 points. This weekend the Tigers are away to Wallangarra with both Men’s and Ladies teams playing. The Roosters who had a bye last weekend will host the combined Texas/Stanthorpe team.

BORDER BUSHRANGERS GRAB WIN THE Border Bushrangers Under 18 side claimed the scalp of the Highfields’s Under 18 side in the game played at Charlie Andrews Oval last weekend. It was the Bushrangers second win in their maiden year in the TRL Under 18 competition.

In a solid display, the Bushrangers held out a fast finishing Highfields team to win 24-20 after leading 12-6 at half time. The Bushrangers came out in the second half and extended their lead after two good tries but looked to take their foot off the pedal and allowed their opponents back in the game.

Zak Wilmot was the Player of the Match.

BRL GAME FINISHES IN DRAW IN the last game of round two of the BRL, the Wallangarra Rams and combined Stanthorpe Texas side played a 36-all draw in a high scoring game. Both teams have struggled with player numbers this season, and after a crisis meeting at Wallangarra only a week ago it was good news for the competition to see the Rams field a full side plus bench players.

Wallangarra were quickly into stride to take an early lead in the game and Stanthorpe Texas were forced to play catch up in the first half.

Both teams were guilty of poor ball control as they traded tries however there was some good skills displayed in patches from some of the young players in both sides.

There will be a lot of teams from all over South East Queensland attending and playing, as well as Premier Darts themselves.

Everyone is welcome to have a look.

Hopefully, there will be a better turn up next Tuesday.

On Thursday Just Us narrowly beat 2+2 by 5-4. Best player was Mark with four pegs and three tons.

Don’t Know beat Young Ones, also by 5-4. Best player was Warren with six pegs and four tons.

Meanwhile, the club is preparing to host Intercities tournament on 25 and 26 June at St Mary’s Hall in Warwick.
