AFTER six years of advocacy, Yarra Valley Nursery Disability Manager, Karen Dettmann, will soon witness a major safety boost along a notorious stretch of York Road, Mount Evelyn.

Both staff at Yarra Valley Nursery and students at Mount Evelyn Christian School will soon have access to pedestrian-operated traffic lights, which represents a significant upgrade to the York Road crossing, located between Karen Court and Hawkins Road.

Ms Dettmann said the community had long held concerns that staff with disabilities from the nursery are at risk, when a school crossing supervisor isn’t present.

Yarra Valley Nursery employs around 100 staff, many of whom have a disability.

Candidate raises the bar

By PETER DOUGLAS FEDERAL election time likely poses a win-win scenario for Monbulk sportslovers - it’s just a matter of by how much.

Casey’s Labor candidate Hovig Melkonian has trumped his Liberal counterpart Tony Smith’s funding commitment for the planned upgrade of the Monbulk Recreation Reserve.

Mr Melkonian has announced an increased $750,000 pledge, if elected, which would wipe out any fund-raising Monbulk-based clubs would need to undertake to reach the target.

Mr Smith announced a $600,000 commitment just weeks ago, which effectively represented the final piece of the funds puzzle, with Yarra Ranges Council kicking in $1 million and the Victorian Government $600,000.

However, Mr Melkonian said his rival’s proposal still left a $150,000 shortfall.

“Labor’s $750,000 injection means the Yarra Ranges Council can begin the final planning and documentation, and ground can be broken within 12 months,” Mr Melkonian said.

“The Monbulk community deserves this project to be fully funded and shovel ready within 12 months.

“I played Under 16s footy for the Junction Eagles, and I remember torrential rain and hail while running around at Monbulk Recreation Reserve.

“While I missed out on the upgraded facility, the next generation of Yarra Valley football, cricket and netball players will benefit.”

Mr Melkonian said the Monbulk reserve was critically important to local sports clubs and the community.

Monbulk Primary School, too, would be a direct beneficiary because they often use the reserve for their physical education classes.

Leader newspapers SEVEN throughout Melbourne will soon publish their final editions, with News Corp last week announcing cuts.

This will include the closure of the ‘Free Press Leader’, which circulates throughout the Yarra Ranges.

Other community newspapers will include Berwick, Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Melbourne, Melton and Wyndham.

As many as eight journalists could be without jobs after the News Corp decision.

The Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA) revealed the cuts through a bulletin to its members, which stated that increased competitive pressures and the size of the market had been cited as the drivers behind the decision.

The final editions are flagged for the week beginning Monday 27 June. MEAA Victorian director Carolyn Dunbar hit out at News Corp.

“MEAA members were this morning told that in three weeks, their papers will no longer exist,” she said.

“It’s just not good enough.

“The company is required to consult with their staff about major changes and the company should be drawing on the expertise of editorial staff on the ground before announcing any cuts to titles.”

Ms Dunbar said it was a huge blow for community newspapers.

The MEAA said it had sought a meeting with News Corp to discuss the proposed changes.

By PETER DOUGLAS TWO Yarra Ranges residents boasted an extra reason to celebrate this year’s Queen’s Birthday weekend.

Kalorama’s David Ashton-Smith and Marian Pawlik from Mount Evelyn were among the almost 600 Australians included in the 2016 Queen’s Birthday honour list, which pays tribute to their dedication to community.

Mr Ashton-Smith was recognised

for his services to the performing arts and secondary education, while Mr Pawlik for his service to the Polish community of Victoria.

Mr Ashton-Smith has accumulated a long list of achievements, including being the managing director of the Australian Philharmonic Orchestra and the founder of the Ashton-Smith Singers He has also been heavily involved in music education at numerous schools,

as well as being the adjudicator of eisteddfods since 1980.

Mr Ashton-Smith said it was a shock to be among the Australians named.

“I’m very humbled and delighted to receive the honour; a general feeling of gratitude to enjoy music for so long,” he said.

“Music is still a big part of my life.”

Mr Ashton-Smith said it was overwhelming to be recognised for some-

thing he enjoyed doing so much.

“I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to develop musical talents of many young singers and performers, many of whom have gone on to have good careers,” he said.

He paid tribute to his first singing teacher, Bettine McCaughn, who is due to turn 90 this year and is a successful music teacher.

Mr Ashton-Smith listed his musical inspirations as included Frank Sinatra,

Tony Bennett and Shirley Bassey.

His career highlights include working with Andrea Bocelli and Barry Humphries.

Meanwhile, Mr Pawlik’s services include his work with the Polish Community Council of Victoria, wher he has filled numerous important roles.

He is also the recipient of Victoria’s Multicultural Award for Excellence and the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, Republic of Poland.

Briefly Machinery store hit POLICE are calling for information after Monbulk’s Alpine Mowers was struck by burglars over the weekend.

Between Friday night and Saturday morning, the mower store on Main Road Monbulk was struck by burglars using a white van.

A rear roller door was forced open, and tools in a workshop on the property, some belonging to customers, were stolen.

Chainsaws and brushcutters are among the items stolen, and the white van was later found burnt out in the Gembrook area.

Knowing write from wrong THREE children have been cautioned over graffiti incidents in Monbulk earlier this month, after being arrested for criminal damage.

Monbulk police Sergeant Mark Knight said that a 12-year-old Avonsleigh boy, a 12-year-old Emerald boy and a 14-year-old Monbulk boy had all been arrested on graffiti charges.

Cigarettes swiped CIGARETTE thieves are being hunted by police after burglaries in Lilydale and Kilsyth over the weekend.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Mark Smithwick said that about 2.30am on Saturday 11 June, unknown people smashed the front glass to a cigarette store in Main Street Lilydale.

The thieves made off with cigarettes in a darkcoloured Mazda CX9.

Later that morning, about 3am, thieves smashed through a glass door to a tobacco shop on Mount Dandenong Road in Kilsyth and cut through a security screen with an angle grinder.

More cigarettes were taken from the shop.

Promise of CCTV cameras

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS CASEY MP Tony Smith has promised funding for new CCTV cameras in five Yarra Ranges communities including Mount Evelyn and Monbulk.

Mr Smith made the announcement in Monbulk on Thursday 9 June, where he met with members of the local community to discuss the election commitment.

If a Coalition Government is reelected in July, Mr Smith has earmarked the Monbulk Business Network and Mount Evelyn Chamber of Commerce to receive $75,000 each for the new cameras.

Lilydale police Crime Prevention Officer Leading Senior Constable Linda Hancock said the new cameras would tie into the other CCTV networks in the Yarra Ranges.

“The camera locations would all work as a network and link to each other to create a big picture of the ins and outs of the Yarra Ranges,” she said.

Mr Smith said he has been working closely with the communities of the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges to identify locations in need of the cameras.

“I have had many conversations with the local residents and businesses in these communities about need for CCTV security cameras to combat increased crime in their communities,” he said.

The announcement follows a promise from the last federal election that has seen CCTV cameras installed in Lilydale, Healesville and Yarra Junction.

“Whether it’s theft, graffiti, assault or other serious incidents, the delivery of these CCTV security camera networks will ensure the local police can respond quickly and have the evidence

John Coleman of the Monbulk Business Network welcomed the announcement and said CCTV cameras would ensure the safety of residents and businesses in Monbulk.

“It is about keeping our community strong and safe and ensuring business

confidence,” he said.

“We are always interested in attracting new businesses to our town and that means keeping our town really safe.”

Mr Smith also announced funding for CCTV cameras in Yarra Glen and Woori Yallock as part of his election commitment.

The funding would be allocated

as part of the Coalition Government’s Safer Communities Fund which builds on the foundations of the Safer Streets Programme and the Schools Security Programme.

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS A FORMER Sassafras resident has teamed up with Rotary Boronia to help a remote Fijian school get back on its feet.

Andra Lazarescu and her partner relocated to Fiji shortly before Cyclone Winston devastated the small island country.

Shortly after the cyclone hit, Ms Lazarescu became involved with Vunikavikaloa Arya School (called ‘Vunika’ for short).

The school catered to 233 children from years one to eight, and employed eight teachers.

When she arrived at the devastated school, attendance was only at 80 per cent and was bring operated out of a UNICEF tent.

“Ironically, while tears were streaming down my face on seeing this deplorable situation, it was the teachers present who were shirking with embarrassment as if it was their fault?” Ms Lazarescu said.

Ms Lazarescu reached out to Peter Malden of Rotary Boronia to help the school rebuild.

“Once Rotary became involved, everything moved very quickly. Together we raised enough funds to make the first two class rooms ‘dry’

and bring the kids out of the tents and back inside,” she said.

Within 30 days of receving the first donation from Rotary, the team had re-built a classroom and the students could work in dry conditions again.

“We are now focusing on completing the entire re-build of the roof, and breaking this down into actionable stages,” Mr Malden said.

“We expect about four stages, with each being valued around $10,000.”

The team are using local materials and skills where they can to spread the benefit of the project into the wider community.

By PETER DOUGLAS YARRA Ranges Council and La Trobe MP Jason Wood are urging the Victorian Government to re-think its position on works to improve the Mount Dandenong Tourist Road.

State Minister for Roads and Roads Safety Luke Donnellan has rejected an approach for funds support to widen sections of the road, which aims to improve the safety of cyclists and motorists.

In a letter to Mr Wood, which the Mail has viewed, Mr Donnellan said further investigations were required to ascertain feasibility.

The letter cited a VicRoads’ preliminary investigation, which stated there would be “significant challenges and high costs associated with such a facility”.

However, Mr Wood has continued to push the proposal, including it in a series of recent tourism-based election promises.

The promise includes $10 million to widen sections of the road, which Mr Wood said is much needed and could be one of the largest funding commitments ever for road safety in this region.

“Ever since Cadel Evans won the Tour de France (in 2011), the amount of cyclists riding up through here on a weekend is unbelievable,” he said.

“But the locals use the road, too. They may be taking the kids to footy. It’s a recipe for disaster.

The recent announcement culminated in a whirlwind visit from Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull late last month who also pledged his support for the plan.

Meanwhile, Yarra Ranges Mayor Jason Callinan said the work would be beneficial for tourists and the community.

“Residents want other people to come here - (there are) more than 3 million visitors a year,” Cr Callinan said.

“Many businesses rely on people visiting but when big

events are held the local residents get frustrated.

“They are small roads (and have) been like that for many, many years - infrastructure is not keeping up with demand.”

Cr Callinan said there had been numerous accidents on the road over the years and he didn’t want to see more.

“As a paramedic, far too many times I’ve seen cyclists that have been hit by a car,” Cr Callinan said.

“Some motorists, with the best intentions, don’t realise the danger when they drive only a few inches away from them.”

The sentiment gained support from Colin Rourke from Mitcham who for many years has cycled almost daily, particularly along the Mount Dandenong Tourist Road.

Worth writing home about TWO of the Dandenong Ranges’ finest up-and-coming writers are set to showcase their talents at the renowned Emerging Writers’ Festival in Melbourne. Lorelei Vashti (Selby, pictured) and Eliza Henry-Jones will be part of 200 in the literary community to celebrate and explore writing through ideas, storytelling and performance. The two writers will undertake various events within the program. Vashti’s latest project includes a baby surname handbook. Meanwhile, HenryJones recently released her first offering in a three-book deal with Harper Collins. The festival has gained a reputation as one of the best on the Australian literary calendar. Snow waiting for adventurous Those seeking some winter action will be pleased to hear Lake Mountain and Mt Baw Baw are excited to be opening for the first time this year on Saturday, 11 June. With a little snow falling on the mountains, and more forecast, many will soon head up the mountains. Lake Mountain will celebrate with the official opening of the brand new ‘Bunton Riglet Park’. The park is designed to introduce youngsters (aged 3 to 6) to snowboarding in a safe and controlled environment. The Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp) has become crazier than usual, and is convinced that his family is still alive. Alice (Mia Wasikowska) travels through time in an attempt to rescue them, but in doing so places all of time in jeopardy.

Taking over from Tim Burton, director James Bobin helms a fastpaced, exciting and visually stunning adventure, but the true star is Linda Woolverton and her intelligent, engaging screenplay.

In a powerful performance from Wasikowska, Alice is an empowered, pro-active heroine who is still

allowed to be impulsive and uncertain.

The plot has a healthy dose of moral complexity. Though she has noble intentions, Alice is recklessly endangering the universe by stealing the Chronosphere, and while the god-like Time (Sacha Baron Cohen) is zealous in his efforts to reclaim it, he simply wants to fix the damage.

Though the logistics of how time operates in Wonderland are somewhat cloudy, the film makes tense, pretty brilliant use of the predestination or 'bootstrap’ paradox, with Alice causing certain events she had travelled back to avert.

Alice Through The Looking Glass is one of 2016’s biggest positive surprises.

But then, I could be totally biased. As a time travel fan, I ate this film up.

THE Montrose Town Centre is set to host one of the world’s leading harp soloists, Alice Giles.

In what will be the final show at the venue before extension works begin on the site, Giles will perform on Sunday, 19 June, as part of the Classical Tracks program.

After presenting her first solo recital at age 13, and making her New York solo debut in 1983, Giles is internationally recognised and has performed with some of the world’s most prestigious orchestras.

Her list of musical achievements is just as stunning as the sounds that emanate from her harp.

Giles told the ‘Mail’ she feels lucky to be able to perform solo at Montrose, which will be her first show in the region.

“Playing solo is my favourite thing to do, it gives me a great sense of freedom in interpreting the music,” she said.

“The harp is a very versatile instrument and has a lot of colours and expression.

“It has much larger sounds than people imagine.”

Giles said more people are appreciating the harp worldwide, including both classical and popular audiences.

“Not many realise it’s a very physical instrument ... there are seven pedals ... you use your whole body,” she said.

“It’s really a full-time instrument, I put in many hours before a performance to be at the top of my playing ... to have

The Minister for Water gives notice under section 27 (4) (a) of the Water Act 1989 of the proposal to abolish the Wandin Yallock Water Supply Protection Area (WSPA).

The development of a statutory management plan for the Wandin Yallock WSPA is no longer considered necessary as there is a cap on licence extractions, extractions are metered and there is a monitoring regime in place. The Wandin Yallock WSPA is currently managed by a local management plan and this is considered more appropriate as it provides a more flexible, efficient and effective way to clarify watersharing arrangements.

The proposed action will see the Wandin Yallock WSPA becoming a groundwater management area and would allow for permanent transfers to occur. This proposal does not alter the permissible consumptive volume. The Wandin Yallock WSPA is currently fully allocated so no new groundwater licences can be issued.

Love of tennis enriches lives

By KATH GANNAWAY IT’S grassroots tennis at it’s most relaxed, but for the Monbulk midweek ladies, two premierships is still something to celebrate.

In two close doubles grand finals, Monbulk Section 7 won by two games, 38 to 36, against Wonga Park in the Wednesday competition and their Section 9 team won by an even closer margin, 39 to 38 against Hoddles Creek in the Thursday competition.

In a change to the umpiring rules as part of the Ferntree Gully and District LWTA, the midweek games are now played at the home court of the team which finished highest on the ladder - and even the grand finals are self-umpired.

It’s a model of self-regulation that Monbulk Section 9 Captain, Deb Williams, says fits very well with the friendly nature of midweek ladies tennis.

Sitting down to a delicious lunch among the gum trees at the Hoddles Creek clubrooms, she said while it was good to win a premiership flag, it really was about enjoying the game, and the people.

When they finished fourth and Hoddles Creek third, Deb said they thought there was no way they would play off against their favourite opposition ladies.

But they both punched above their weight defeating the top two teams and found themselves hitting off in alternating bursts of icy wind and glaring bursts of sunshine on courts that, as far as anyone in the Hoddles team could remember, was a first grand final competition - certainly the first mid-week tennis.

“We were really pleased when it worked out that way; we always have such nice tennis here,” Deb said.

On the court, nice as it is, and it really is, everyone is putting in 100 per cent.

“It’s still competitive, because it gives you a focus,” Deb explains. “But really it’s not about whether you win or lose, it’s not about gauging your self-worth from either winning or losing.”

There’s a lot of talk from the four spectators on the side-lines about the benefits of tennis with one long-time player describing it as “something you can do from the cradle to the grave”.

For the mid-weekers, it’s a game many take up after retiring from busy lives, or once their children are out of home.

Deb started in her forties but said she has played with women in their eighties and possibly older.

The numbers are dropping however, and with many women working longer, it’s a challenge to fill the spots.

“I think now, a lot of families are just so time poor and midweek ladies is really a full day out, by the time you prepare food and play a full game, it’s time to go and get the kids from school, so a lot of mums just don’t have the luxury of a full day out for themselves,” she said.

For those who do, however, it’s rewarding.

“It’s women supporting women and it’s good for general wellbeing, mental health and the social interaction it provides,” Deb said.

By PETER DOUGLAS IT’S the conversation all parents must have with teen children, according to Emerald Fire Brigade member Jody Yandle ... 'road trauma: how to avoid becoming part of a tragedy'.

As the first anniversary approaches for the horrific car crash in Avonsleigh in which three teenagers lost their lives, Ms Yandle is encouraging parents and teens to attend the Teenage Road Information Program (TRIP) at Emerald Secondary College on Thursday 16 June.

Ms Yandle was the first to attend the Avonsleigh crash, which took the lives of teenagers Sharn Walker, Felisha Allen and Jason Breakwell, after their car hit a tree along Phillip Road on the afternoon of Tuesday 30 June last year.

Ms Yandle said: “I don’t want anyone to experience something like that”. Which is

TRIP will include video clips, guest speakers and information designed to encourage teens to think carefully about their choices, either as driver or passenger.

“They need to identify that person ... the one who will come and pick them up at 4am if they don’t feel safe.”

The TRIP audience will hear from those who have lost someone close, as well as young man who worked hard to get back his life after a car accident.

Emerald emergency service members will talk about their experiences, their role and how they manage the psychological stress that goes with their important work.

TRIP is a free community event and will take place at the Emerald Secondary College’s Performing Arts Centre, at 7.30pm on Thursday 16 January.

YOUNG drivers are being encouraged to apply for this year’s Anthony and Travis Hall Driver Education Memorial Fund.

Managed by fire services members in the Dandenong Ranges, the initiative offers the chance to participate in a Level 1 Defensive Driving Course. The one-day course is valued at $295.

Four courses will be awarded to young members of the fire service and two members of the local community.

The fund honours the memories of Anthony and Travis Hall, who were aged 15 and 13 respectively, when they were killed in a road accident in Cockatoo in 1995.

Both teenagers were enthusiastic members of the Upwey Junior Fire Brigade.

“The fund received tremendous support from local fire brigades and residents, and even people from the suburbs,” he said.

Close-run contest to date FOUR seasons in one day seems to be common place in the valley during winter.

As the results and scores reflect, they can have a major impact on football and netball, but the competition is proving to be a close-run race this season.

Yarra Junction have kept themselves in touch with the top 5 with a win. Yarra junction held a slim 2-point lead at the first break but Kinglake should have been in front but for indirect kicking.

Kinglake played a better brand of footy in the second, kicking 3.1 to 1.4 and took a 7-point lead into the main break.

The weather did not deter athletes from Yarra Ranges, Croydon and Cockatoo clubs from enjoying an excellent day of Active Feet Cross Country running, many taking the opportunity to fine tune their preparation for school cross country events in the coming week.

EMERALD GOLF BECAUSE the previous Saturday was a wash-out at Emerald Golf Club, it was decided that last Saturday would be another chance for members to win the June VGL monthly medal.

But the weather gods are a vengeful crew as it was raining when members arrived and continued to do so from then on.

Numerous members gave it away when they got near the tuck shop but others splashed on to glory and ignominy.

It was decided to have another replay for the medal due to the big wet so it will be played for next Saturday.

Peter Clowes (15) stunned the others with a wet weather round right from the top shelf when he came in with a nett 65 to win by the length of the straight and half way back the back side.

In B Grade, from which few ducks come, just over half the golfers gave in to the sodden greens and ceased play at the tuck shop where warmth, a sausage sizzle and the occasional beverage was on offer.

It was left to Seppy Krummenacher (21) to represent the grade when his nett 75 was easily good enough for victory.

Peter Glasscock (16) was the only other golfers to card a decent score with a nett 70.

Clowes hogged the nearest the pins as he scooped the pool on the 4th, 7th, 13th and the pro pin and it was left to John Fisher to break Clowes’ run with a win on the 13th.

Wednesday’s Opulently Faceted Golf (OFG) was a stableford event which obviously tickled the fancy of John Piggott when he hit form in a big way to amass 47 points to win in a common canter.

Mick Petrie followed him in with 37 while Bobby Kennedy and John Carvill both played to their handicaps for 36 points apiece.

Next Saturday is a stroke event where 16 of the best scoring members will qualify to compete for the match play championship for 2016.
