Priceless love THE community has rallied to support a mother battling brain cancer with multiple fundraisers and more than $20,000 in donations raised in two months.

Roz Harper is the loving mother of three daughters, Chloe, Megan and Molly, and the doting wife of Jon Harper and for seven years the family has been supporting Roz to beat brain cancer.

But it hasn’t come cheap.

The Noosa community has given its time, money and services to help the Tewantin family, including a recent lunch held at Sirocco Noosa which raised more than $1700.

More than 50 locals joined Roz and her family as they enjoyed a three-course meal and silent auction

with all monies raised going towards the Harper family’s medical and transport costs.

Ms Harper’s daughter, Chloe, has set up a Go Fund Me page to raise funds to pay medical bills and transport costs for the many visits to the Royal Brisbane Women’s Hospital.

By Tuesday 7 June more than $22,088 had been raised with 163 people contributing to the Harper family.

Power out, beaches lashed, branches fall but it still looks spectacular!

MORE than 2000 homes were left without power over the weekend as wild winds lashed the Coast bringing down tree branches and power lines.

Energex crews were kept busy with hinterland properties from Montville to Rosemount and Woombye to Yandina experiencing loss of power.

Beerwah was the worst hit with over 1135 homes affected.

Along the coastline, high tides and a north-easterly swell ripped sand off Noosa and Mooloolaba beaches as big seas pounded the Coast in the aftermath of the east coast low.

Lifeguards at both beaches reported

sand erosion with only a foot or two of sand remaining before the retaining wall rocks on Noosa’s Main Beach with waves washing up onto the timber slats of the boardwalk.

Beaches have been re-opened but locals and tourists are warned to be safe as big swells continue to lash the shore from Noosa to Sunshine Beach.

Flood mitigation in place NOOSA Council is putting the finishing touches on a $1.5 million Pomona flood mitigation project.

The Rifle Street works aim to reduce the severity and frequency of flooding for numerous properties on Rifle and School streets.

Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington, who recently inspected the work, said the project improved the safety of residents and would provide greater peace of mind when severe weather struck.

“It’s terrific to finally see the end result of this project, the need for which came to light when I was first elected to represent Division 12 on the Sunshine Coast Council,” he said.

The height and drainage channel capacity has been increased and a new bund wall constructed to divert floodwaters to Cooroora Creek.

The Pomona Flood Mitigation Infrastructure Project was a joint initiative of Noosa Council, the Com-

monwealth Government and the Queensland Government under the 2014-2015 Natural Disaster Resilience Program.

Council consulted with the Pomona Flood Reference Group and used flood modelling technology to analyse the Pomona terrain and develop the Rifle Street fix.

“While we can’t control the weather, with the co-operation of all three levels of government we have been able to better protect those whose homes were most at risk,” Cr Wellington said.

“My sincere thanks go to the state and federal governments for their essential input, to the Pomona residents involved, and to Noosa Council’s expert staff who stitched up the deal and oversaw the works.”

Plan to reopen Noosa TAFE A FORMAL proposal to see the Noosa TAFE reopen as a state-owned training facility has been lodged with the State Government.

Labor candidate for Wide Bay Lucy Stanton and Chamber of Commerce president Peter Chenoweth have submitted a proposal to the State Government’s Strategic Training Asset Management Plan (STAMP) review, advocating for a reopening of the Noosa TAFE as a training facility.

“It’s time for the community to figure out what to do with the Noosa TAFE. The number one priority must be to ensure training and skilling needs are met in this region,” Ms Stanton said.

“The Noosa TAFE facility is purpose-built for training, hence I do not regard it as a piece of infrastructure to be sold off. It is a national asset, and we must work across all levels of government to ensure its future.”

Ms Stanton said she had worked closely with Mr Chenoweth to develop a joint plan

of action.

“Our plan is for the facility to be retained as a state-owned asset to meet projected growth in training needs for the northern Sunshine Coast region,” Ms Stanton said.

“Our collaboration arises out of previously articulated messages from each of us, of a need to diversify the local economy, beyond tourism, to include digital enterprises and small scale production.

“It is driven by a desire to see our community be smarter about living sustainability within the Noosa biosphere, and for this to include a range of creative industries, Noosamade manufacturing and digital innovation spaces.”

Ms Stanton said she and Mr Chenoweth were invited to participate in their consultation on STAMP and through this involvement were advised by the Minister for Training and Skills Yvette D’Ath to submit a formal proposal to the review.

“Our concept is for a twophase re-opening of Noosa

TAFE for training, informed by genuine community participation in a practical conversation concerning how our TAFE can best serve this local region,” Ms Stanton said.

“An initial stage involves different projects spread across the campus from a digital hub through to workshop instruction.

“In the follow-on stage, we propose a re-opening of the TAFE but only once an underlying business case to support training has been demonstrated. This is to be conducted through the active involvement of our community during the initial stage."

“Our proposal for action, not talk, is about getting it right concerning training and what vocational skills our community needs into the future. It is about raising confidence to move forward with re-opening the campus, with informed decisions made possible through community engagement to determination how the Noosa TAFE can best serve us locally.”

Decade-long decorating the big day FROM humble beginnings on the dining room table, a local business is set to celebrate 10 years in the industry.

Flashpackers Noosa has bagged an award for excellence for the sixth year in a row.

Award stays with hostel yet again Sami and Caroline of Mix FM with Noosa MP Glen Elmes.

Tuned into charity cash MIX Fm’s annual Give Me 5 for Kids fundraiser saw radio presenters dashing across the coast collecting cash.

Breakfast host Caroline Hutchinson and afternoon host Sami joined forces as they raced against the clock, and fellow presenters Mark and Todd, to see who could raise the most money for charity on Friday 3 June.

Caroline and Sami dropped into Noosa to pick up a cheque for $350 from Noosa MP Glen Elmes.

“When the money goes towards helping sick kids, how can you not get involved,” Mr Elmes said.

“I think it’s a great thing to be involved in, especially when the teams are out on their own time collecting the donations.”

The teams met back at the radio station in Maroochydore at 3pm to compare donations with Caroline and Sami just pulling in front of the boys by “a few hundred dollars”.

“We want to raise a lot of money for the charity but, of course, we always hope the boys are just a little bit behind,” Caroline said.

The teams raised a total of $19,700 which will aid and support sick chil-

dren and their families in times of need.

Mr Elmes has also opened his office to receive donations by artists who wish to contribute to the silent auction which will take place at the Cricks Volkswagen Showroom, Maroochydore, on Tuesday 14 June from 6pm.

“The silent art auction is another great fundraising opportunity and if you are an artist who wants to donate a piece of art to the auction, you can bring it to the office and I will arrange safe transport,” Mr Elmes said.

Moves afoot on hall

By MEGAN OGLE THE fate of the Cooroy Memorial Hall is in limbo but local groups and businesses are rallying together to re-open the iconic building.

The Cooroy Memorial Hall Action chairperson Harry Kirk said the group was collaborating with the Cooroy RSL and Noosa Council to reopen the hall and positive steps had been taken towards this goal.

“Although not visible to the naked eye, matters have still been progressing behind the scenes,” Mr Kirk said.

“An application was made by the Cooroy RSL to Noosa Council for a subdivision of the existing Lot, encompassing part of the RSL and hall buildings, thus enabling release of the hall portion only. This application was unsuccessful for a number of reasons.”

Noosa Council community services director Alan ‘Fox’ Rogers said the application had not been formally rejected.

“Council officers have requested further information from the applicant before a final assessment is made, which means the process is ongoing. The application will be reported to a future council meeting for a decision,” Mr Rogers said.

“Separate to the subdivision application, council officers are working through a number of options with the RSL to try and resolve the land tenure issues on the site where the hall and the club buildings encroach onto council freehold land.”

A Noosa River leasehold site and business has sold for $1.2 million.

Locals rally together to reopen the Cooroy Memorial Hall.

A Cooroy RSL spokesperson confirmed a structural engineer had been engaged to assess the hall and report on its condition.

“We can confirm the report from the engineer noted there were no major structural defects visible at the time of inspection,” they said.

“However, there are essential repairs needed such as removal of damaged rafters, removal of damaged external cladding, removal of asbestos and complete removal of the kitchen which need to be carried out in order to facilitate reopening the hall.

“The Cooroy RSL is very keen to reopen the hall as soon as re-

quired funds can be raised to do the above repairs and these essential repairs are carried out.

“In the meantime, the RSL, council and Cooroy Memorial Hall Action Group continue to work together with the same aim that we can all see the reopening of the hall in the near future for the benefit of the whole community.”

A POULAR Noosa River jetty leasehold site and business has attracted national interest and a price tag of $1.2 million.

The recent sale of Jetty 17, 248 Gympie Terrace, Noosaville, follows the sale earlier this year of the nearby Pelican Boat Hire Business for an undisclosed sum.

The 488sqm tenanted site of Jetty 17 had been offered for sale for an extended period and is said to have attracted strong interest.

Ray White Commercial Noosa and Sunshine Coast North agent John Petralia said the sale confirmed the value of leasehold riverfront sites.

“There were 40 inquiries on the property, including some from the people who had looked at the Pelican Boat Hire site," he said.

Mr Petralia said the new owner was relocating from Brisbane and will be actively involved in the running of the boat and kayak hire business at Jetty 17.

“The popular Stand Up Paddle hire and lessons and Ocean Rider will continue to run from the site. The new owner is planning some minor cosmetic and presentation changes and over time introducing new complementary marine activities," Mr Petralia said.

Labor lifeline for sinking hospice LABOR candidate for Wide Bay Lucy Stanton calls on politics and extra funding to save Katie Rose.

Ms Stanton has weighed in on the local issue of the Sunshine Hospice, formally known as Katie Rose Cottage, saying politics may be the answer.

“The community has demonstrated their clear support for the Sunshine Hospice’s re-opening by attending a fund-raising concert in May at the Good Shepherd Lutheran College hall in Noosaville, Let me say it was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon but, sadly, I was the only political invitee who thought to attend and get solidly behind the concept of a community hospice,” Ms Stanton said.

“There is a problem which won’t go away. The Sunshine Hospice needs political support and action to make re-opening a reality."

Ms Stanton said the hospice had been forced to seek recurrent or ongoing funding to meet a substantial shortfall, and to be eligible to receive government funding and private health insurance rebates, the hospice would have to become a private hospital.

“This is a huge burden and a completely unnecessary requirement to demand such accreditation. Not only does it force excessive administrative reporting burdens on staff, but it will require a new purpose-built facility before re-opening,” Ms Stanton said.

Ms Stanton said palliative care policy in Australia “exhibits a lack of innovative thinking” and reform is needed to improve quality of care and reduce costs.

“Right now, many Australians are not able to choose their care arrangements. The overwhelming evidence is we want to die away from a hospital yet most are forced to accept otherwise and things are getting worse,” Ms Stanton said.

“Federal Labor will invest in im-

proving palliative care, with a new approach headlined by $21.7 million for new Palliative Care at Home packages and $9 million to roll out the Proactive Palliative Care model, which will fund specialists to partner with residential aged care facilities to promote palliative and end-of-life care.

“A community hospice is where people would prefer to spend their last days, when it is not possible to be cared for at home, still surrounded by loved ones in a peaceful environment.

The whole idea of a hospice is for it to look, feel and smell different.”

Gemini and her twin calves continue to impress judges and the public, with Gemini winning the Grand Champion British/European Female Exhibit, only to be pipped at the post for Supreme

Champ by a lovely Brangus cow and calf exhibited by Lucy Roche.

Lucy is a former NDSHS show team leader, and now owns and runs a small Brangus stud near Gympie.

NDSHS agricultural science teacher John Masterman was OK with a former Noosa High student taking out top placing, and was very proud of the NDSHS cattle team’s big effort.

“The Year 10 girls are really stepping up, showing great leadership and developing very competent cattle judging and parading skills. Once more a great team effort," Mr Masterman said.

Winter lifesavers on the line Ron Lane's

people THE summer is over and for the majority of the volunteer lifesaver it is now football, tennis or just plain surfing – no more rostered patrols.

The winter months are leisure time.

However, for a small elite team of volunteer lifesavers known as the Emergency Response Group, it is never over.

This is the team that responds to the special jobs in remote areas, outof-the-way places and, in particular, the toughest job of all – the nighttime call out, even in winter.

It is hard to believe but it happens all the time, even in the cold months of winter and the dead of night. Some people just don’t stop and think.

And here is a common scenario.

The family has just arrived from down south and, despite the fact it has turned dark and getting chilly, a quick swim at the beach in front of their resort is the thing to do.

Their pride and joy, 10-year-old son and 12-year-old daughter, have each received a boogie board as a winter vocation present.

Not strong swimmers, they have just joined swim classes at school but, no worries, they will be OK. Arriving at their area of choice they run to the water’s edge and on this cold moonlight night they can just make out a sand bank 20 metres out. No winter wet suits. Paddle out, ride the boogie board to shore. Easy.

Then quickly home to a hot shower.

They go and suddenly they are out of sight. Then minutes later the two boards hit the water’s edge.

No kids, a laugh then silence, then all of a sudden a scream. Dad swims out, then nothing. Back on the beach a small crowd has gathers and someone has a mobile.

Then a calm voice, “I’ll call triple zero�.

He asks for police, tells them they are 400 metres south of the Sunshine Beach Surf Club and two children and an adult have disappeared out back of a sand bank roughly 20 to 30 metres out.

The police tell the caller to stay where he is and, in the meantime, mum has grabbed a torch that was supposed to show the kids their way back to their lodge. She turns it on to use as a beacon.

Then in the cold winter’s night in the deafening silence – they wait.

At the police base they have a phone roster which lists after hours numbers for such emergencies.

A Lifesavers job is never done with crews on call throughout the wild winter season.

As each surf club has members who are in the Emergency Response Group, their mobile numbers are listed.

Despite the fact that it is winter and the family evening meal is now under way, a volunteer lifesaver takes the call, leaves the family table and goes.

However, this time there is an addition to his call-out kit. It's winter so the heavy duty wet suit is added.

The wheels are in motion. All team members assemble, everything is double checked and the boat is launched.

In no time in the dead of night a search pattern is under way and, luckily this time, all ends well. But next time, who knows?

Be it 8pm or 2am, good weather or pouring rain in mid-winter, these people respond when called on because, as members of the Emergency Response Group, part of their job, even in the dead of winter, is to “cover the night�.

Their work when called to assist in the catastrophe Brisbane floods and also the Tewantin floods of recent years was second to none.

The clubs at the northern end of the Sunshine Coast work together covering an area that stretches virtually from the Wilderness Camp on North Shore to Peregian. Summer and winter, daytime and night, they are always on call. “It is now 20 years since this Emergency Response Group was formed. As this group also does so much night work it has achieved a record of which we can be proud,� said Dave McLain, State Coordination Officer.

Worthy of note is that, for example, on a call out from Noosa to the A Bay region, these IRB teams of the Emergency Response Group are, as a result of their high standard of training and state-of-the-art equipment, capable of a response time of eight to

10 minutes, depending on conditions.

Because of the night work and other aspects, the crewies usually join the group at about the age of 24. “By this age they have moved into a more mature age bracket that we feel is more suited to our type of operations,� said a senior spokesman.

It therefore comes as no surprise to know that over the years many of these people have been recipients of the Special Surf Life Saving Excellence Awards for outstanding dedication and devotion to duty.

From the Sunshine Beach Club there are men such as Bill Twigger, Warick Redwood, Craig Law, Scott Summers and the lady of the team, Jane Fraser.

The Noosa members of the team are father and son Chris and Keaton Grandemange, Joe Cirillo, Ian Widdicombe, Chris Vaughan and Roger Aspinall.

For Bill Twigger and Warick Redwood the night work commenced some 10 years ago and during this time the Jet Rescue Boat was still stationed at Noosa.

Heat is on popular nightspot’s noise

By MEGAN OGLE HOTSPOT Village Bicycle was once again on the agenda as councillors debated noise complaints and trading hours.

The local restaurant, which is popular with hospitality workers, has been a hot topic since residents bordering the commercial area lodged complaints with Noosa Council about noise from the venue.

In a report tabled at the Planning and Environment Committee meeting on Tuesday 7 June staff recommended that councillors approve the application for a Material Change of Use in accordance with 16 conditions targeting the issue of noise.

The conditions include a limit on patrons and a restriction on the use of the outdoor dining area after 10pm as well as the erection of a 2.6 metre tall acoustic fence and native screening shrubs.

Mayor Tony Wellington said the issue was a “curly” one and would possibly set a precedent for future issues.

“This is a real conundrum. On the one hand there is a recommendation for an acoustic fence at 2.6m that exceeds the height limits of fencing generally, we have a request for opening hours that exceed the outdoor dining and drinking conditions on premises elsewhere.

“But we also have a business that has found a niche market for late night trading,” Cr Wellington said.

“So, the question is whether we should be supporting the business initiative or sticking to our regular conditions that help protect the amenity of nearby residents.”

The recommendations will go before councillors at the next General Meeting on Monday 13 June for further discussion after Deputy Mayor Frank Wilkie raised concerns over the restriction of trading hours and height of the acoustic fence.

INBRIEF Agricultural study can help

The spotlight is on the increasingly popular hotspot as the council debates the noise night patrons make.

A STUDY carried out on Noosa’s agriculture could help to inform a new planning scheme.

In a report tabled at the Council’s Planning and Environment Committee meeting on Tuesday 7 June a recommendation was made to endorse research into agriculture and agricultural land in the Noosa shire for the purpose of informing the new planning scheme.

The planning study would “make recommendations on how the planning scheme can facilitate rural enterprises as a priority sector, advance the state’s planning interest in agriculture and protect the amenity and environment of the Noosa hinterland”.

According to the report some of those recommendations would include clearly defining boundaries to urban areas and rural residential estates, identifying what the preferred dominant land use is for agri-

cultural pursuits and discouraging urban uses which are not compatible with agricultural pursuits from establishing in the rural zone.

Noosa parklands A DRAFT plan addressing environmental issues in Noosa Parklands could soon be open for public consultation.

The Draft Noosa Parklands Parks Management Plan was tabled at the council’s Planning and Environment Committee meeting on Tuesday 7 June with recommendations for public consultation.

The report aims to address issues raised by residents in regards to the management of pest plants and animals, natural hazards, standard of recreational facilities, and signs and education.

Fifteen actions to implement the plan are identified in the action plan including a review of signage, an ecological restoration plan and improved pathways.

Fixing our landfills A 30-YEAR-OLD newspaper recovered from Noosa’s landfill is helping promote recycling at local schools.

Council’s sustainability officer Emma Menzies said the paper offered a disturbing insight as to how long litter can take to break down.

“If newspaper, which typically breaks down within six weeks, can last three decades in a landfill, it is frightening to think that plastics, which cause untold harm to wildlife, can remain in the environment for hundreds of years,” she said.

The council is taking its Towards Zero Waste campaign to local schools to highlight the importance of plastic recycling and waste minimisation.

Sunshine Beach State High School is the latest school to begin recycling, with the school’s student council members working with the council to introduce recycling bins.

“When recyclable plastics make it into the recycling bin it keeps them out of the waste stream and the environment – a message the students are embracing,” Ms Menzies said.

“For some schools this may mean starting a worm farm to help divert organic waste from landfill, or for others, it may be in the rollout of recycling bins and behaviour change efforts to encourage better recycling habits.

Recycling bins are also being rolled out at nearby Good Shepherd Lutheran College, while Noosa District State High School Year 11 students have set up a worm farm.

“The students are learning how

worm castings and worm leachate can be a great fertiliser, and they are testing the liquid worm fertiliser on different plants,” Ms Menzies said.

The council is also taking its message of zero waste to the streets with recycling bins set to be rolled out along Hastings Street later this month according to a council spokesperson.

“The council already provides numerous recycling bins along Gympie Terrace. We intend to provide public place recycling along Hastings Street under the terms of the new contract, this commences in September 2017. We’ve already provided one recycling bin on Hastings Street when we replaced the solar bin last month,” they said.

Home stays for foreign students call A LOCAL language school is calling on the community to open their homes in anticipation of an influx of international students to the region.

Lexis English managing director Ian Pratt said the school was expecting a rapid increase of students in Noosa in the next few months due to the popularity of Australia with international students.

“It’s great to see strong growth in our student numbers on the Coast,” Mr Pratt said.

“I like to think that this is the kind of tourism that is best for the region-- long term, high value, not clustered onto Hastings Street on a long weekend and offering real returns for the broader community.”

The rapid increase in numbers has not been without challenges for Lexis English, however, with demand for community-based accommodation outstripping supply.

“Most students choose to stay in a ‘homestay’ with a local family, taking advantage of the opportunity for cultural exchange, and in many cases making lifelong friends,” Mr Pratt said.

Student breakthru in music and dance STUDENTS from Noosaville, Eumundi and North Arm are singing, dancing and strumming their way towards a share in a $30,000 prize pool as part of Sunshine Plaza’s 2016 Breakthru School Music and Dance Competition.

Twenty local primary and secondary schools from across the Sunshine Coast are battling it out as part of the region-wide competition being held at the Riverwalk Stage this month.

Noosa District State High School student Nicola Hewitt has already been selected as the Judges’ Vote Winner for Heat Two, securing a highly coveted spot in the grand final to be held on 18 June.

Sunshine Plaza centre manager Michael Manwaring said the annual competition, now in its third year, was running over four weekends and would showcase the talents of more than 400 local students.

“Whether it’s a music performance from the Good Shepherd Lutheran College Maroon Band or a dance offering from The Ronnettes at Noosa District State High School, I have no doubt the quality of all the performances will be extremely high,” he said.

THE Noosa Council hosted chief executive officers from two Far North Queensland councils this week. They were in town for a look at how Noosa Council operates and to talk with staff.

Edward Naterra, CEO of Pormpuraaw Aboriginal Shire Council, and Janelle Menzies, CEO of Yarrabah Aboriginal Shire Council, visited Noosa as part of a South East Queensland CEO Forum knowledge-sharing initiative.

They met with Noosa mayor Tony Wellington, deputy mayor Frank Wilkie, council

CEO Brett de Chastel and staff from various departments.

Both visiting CEOs said they enjoyed meeting, and learning from, Noosa Council staff.

“It’s been interesting visiting a council that is bigger than ours and seeing how differently it operates - we have 4000 residents and 120 staff.

Having more specialised staff means Noosa can dedicate more time to planning, whereas in Yarrabah we tend to have to be more reactive to issues as they arise,” Ms Menzies said.

Mr de Chastel said the Noosa Council was pleased to offer Mr Naterra and Ms Menzies advice and to answer questions, as well as help with documents and forms.

“It’s great to be able to help out where we can and share our knowledge with other councils,” Mr de Chastel said.

“Last year we were pleased to welcome the CEO of Quilpie Council in the south-west Queensland Channel Country and we look forward to working with other remote Queensland councils through the South East Queensland CEO Forum.”

Police trackers POLICE took advantage of the recent cold mornings when two officers followed footprints left behind in dewy grass to track a suspect.

Two cars were burnt out in the early hours of the morning on Hendry and Ward Street in Tewantin. When officers attended the scene they could see footprints leading to a carport where they found and apprehended the suspect.

The alleged arsonist was found with stolen goods, which the officers were able to return to their owner.

LOCAL police carried out two raids and recovered a stolen vehicle thanks to a tip-off from concerned community members.

The first raid, carried out on Thursday (2 June) in Tewantin, uncovered an underground water tank used to grow cannabis plants. The suspect was charged with possession of a dangerous drug and utensils as well as producing a dangerous drug.

The second raid on Friday (3 June) led to the recovery of a stolen vehicle as well as an unassembled firearm and further dangerous drug charges.

Acting officer in charge Senior Sergeant Steve McReight urged community members to continue to inform the police of any activity they believed to be suspicious.

Noosa tourism is on the rise.

Tourism numbers surge A RECENT surge in Noosa’s international visitor spend doubles national and state growth.

A 27.6 per cent surge in international visitor expenditure in Noosa is the latest result supporting tourism growth for the destination, an increase that is almost double that of each of the Australian, Queensland and Sunshine Coast spend results, according to data released by Tourism Research Australia.

International Visitor Survey (IVS) data for the year ending March 2016 shows that Noosa’s key overseas markets are thriving, with total visitor numbers also increasing 4.3 per cent to reach 139,600, the highest result in almost 10 years.

UK increased 12.7 per cent to reach nearly 38,000 visitors with spend up 22.6 per cent to $15.5m.

New Zealand also continued to grow with an increase of four per cent in visitor numbers to 21,000 and spend up by seven per cent, while expenditure from Germany grew 12.7 per cent.

Tourism Noosa CEO Damien Massingham said that Noosa’s strong appeal to international visitors, combined with targeted activity and improved access meant that the destination was reaping significant benefits from international markets.

“Noosa has been experiencing sustained growth in inbound tourism since 2012 and these latest results cement Noosa’s position as one

of Australia’s must-see destinations for overseas visitors, who love our natural attractions, surf culture, food experiences and friendly welcome,” Mr Massingham said.

“The North American market is one to watch for Noosa, with visitor numbers, nights and spend all on the rise and, with direct flights to Brisbane Airport just launched by Air Canada, the outlook is extremely positive from this bigspending market.”

Mr Massingham said Tourism Noosa has been actively engaged in lifting the profile of Noosa with retail trade partners, international media and brand partners in the UK, Europe, New Zealand and North America as part of the Noosa Global Market Strategy, which launched in September last year.

THIRD time’s a charm as local bakers cheer on an apprentice as he represents Queensland.

David Hasler, the apprentice baker at Jaspers on Weyba, went to Sydney recently to compete for the Top Apprentice Baker in Australia in the 2016 L.A. Judge Memorial Award, an award his bosses have both competed in.

Owner and baker Jeff Kimm won the award in 1977 and went on to become a judge in the competition during a 10-year stint at the Bread Research Institute of Australia, and his wife and fellow owner and baker Marcia represented Victoria in 1984.

“Even though David didn’t bring home this award, he provided some very tough competition for the Victorian apprentice who did,” Jeff said.

Jeff said he firmly believed David had the ability to become a major part of the baking industry in years to come.

“For David to be selected over and above Queensland’s other apprentice bakers is just an outstanding achievement,” Marcia said.

“We are the only bakery or cafe in Australia that has three people who have contested this award and our bakery products - particularly the sourdough - reflects that.”

LETTER writers (2 June) have raised questions about Noosa Council’s electric bus trial.

Valere Oddoux complains of limited information about it in the local press.

The various council decisions relating to the trial have been completely transparent, with detailed information presented in council agendas, all of which are accessible on our website.

Further information can be readily garnered by typing “electric bus trial” into the website’s search engine.

Scratching for opportunities to complain about council, Jeff Nuske focuses on council’s purchase of battery chargers for the buses. As council’s agendas have noted, these were obtained to support buses from the original contractor who was unfortunately unable to deliver by the agreed deadline. These two chargers will be either on-sold or else converted to electric car chargers. The number of electric vehicles in Noosa is growing and will continue to do so.

The Noosa electric bus trial is just that, a trial. The purpose of a trial is to identify flaws as well as benefits.

Noosa Council worked with Translink on a pre-feasibility study which found that electric buses would be cheaper to operate than diesel buses. As the first electric buses in Queensland, there will also be marketing opportunities for Noosa.

Noosa has a proud history of pioneering environmental awareness and long-term sustainability goals. This Noosa Council is committed to taking progressive action that will see Noosa at the forefront of genuine sustainability actions. Surely that is better than being left behind in what is an unstoppable global shift towards renewable energy and an increased focus on environmental concerns?

Magic news THE announcement by our retiring member Warren Truss and hopefully our new member Lew O’Brien is magic. This Federal Government program is using tried and true technology.

Jeff Nuske suggests ( Noosa Today June 1 ) that our Noosa Council is spending ratepayers’ money to try and prove technology for electric buses that apparently has a long way to go. By utilising the expertise and knowledge of the local Cooroy Chamber and the local police Lew O’Brien is making the tried and true Safer Street Program far more cost effective and efficient.

The Federal Government Innovation Program is likewise designed to work with the private sector to evaluate and develop all matters of new energy and storage for this new era we are entering.

The Noosa Council should forget about all that and concentrate their efforts and our ratepayers’ funds on all things truly local - government, (roads, drainage, parks, libraries and art galleries. We don’t need a space station, we need better roads and drainage.

It is good to see however that the new sections of the Bruce Highway beyond Cooroy are being built to the standards that are used in Australia.

I noticed they are also adding, at last, an emergency lane on the Pacific Highway down to the Gold Coast.

Not a nice letter I NOTICED in the letters to the editor section of Noosa Today a rather nasty letter from Joe Shlegeris regarding local member Glen Elmes.

Now, I have only lived in Noosa for about five years but everything I have heard about Elmes from those who have lived here longer has been nothing but positive - I met him once at a community event and he seemed very nice to talk to and was generous with his time.

From what I have seen and from what others have told me he does achieve for Noosa, he

and his party gave us the right to restore our Noosa Council - there has been a lot of work done on Eumundi Noosa Road, Cooroy Noosa Road and the intersection where it meets Sunrise Road. I’ve also been told about bike paths and sports fields.

I try to keep tabs on our local pollies which is why I follow most of them on Facebook I find it is the best way to see how hard they are working, to be fair I think Glen our State Member and the Noosa councillors are working pretty hard.

I took the time to look up the person who wrote the letter to the paper Joe Shlegeris - he stood as the Greens Party candidate at the last state election and he didn’t impress me at all. it seems he wants to have another try, l hope with the same result.

Fight of his life MY ANNUAL visit to the Noosa Food and

Wine event took an unusual turn this year. I managed to find myself in the Noosa ER and not at the lunch table.

I was literally fighting for my life, and I would not be here today if it were not for the skills of both the doctors and nursing staff.

This hospital has some of the most outstanding doctors and staff in both the ER and ICU and patient care is their foremost goal.

I have heard a rumour that there was a suggestion to close this hospital. I would urge you not to do so as Noosa Hospital is one of the jewels in the Noosa crown and a great asset to everybody. You cannot lose this facility.

Finally, I want to thank all of the doctors, nursing staff and supporting staff all the way down to the porters for their gifted skills, professional attitude, and exemplary approach to patient care. You all really make a difference to the lives in your community.

Angry is in on the action

By MEGAN OGLE NOOSA Today talks all things music and politics with larger than life Rose Tattoo front man Angry Anderson.

Angry is set to lead an all-star cast to Noosa when the Blood, Sweat and Beers tour lands on Noosa’s shores this weekend.

The show consists of more than three hours with former members of AC/DC, The Angels, Rose Tattoo and Screaming Jets performing all their favourites including classic AC/DC songs, a set of The Angels favourites and Screaming Jets hits and, to bring it home, a blistering set of Ross Tattoo classics fronted by the great man himself, Angry Anderson.

The unmistakeable Rose Tattoo front man has slayed audiences and bled on stages across the globe for more than 40 years.

When asked how the tour came about Angry said it was a mutual desire to rock the stage that brought the members together.

“I sing hard rock on the weekends to keep my peace of mind,” Angry said.

“I can’t sing with Rose Tattoo as our band is in limbo at the moment and some of the guys were also singing their songs with other bands so we thought it would be best if we got together and performed our songs.”

The tour took its name from a recently released book by Australia’s rock writer Murray Engleheart which takes readers on a balls and all tour through the bar-brawling, riot-inducing and occasionally gun-toting Oz rock culture.

Rose Tattoo feature in the book which tells of its journey to becoming the loudest, most threatening band to ever stalk the earth.

But there is a softer side to Angry who has recently announced his third attempt at politics as the second senate candidate in NSW for the Australian Liberty Alliance last month.

“I want to be part of the solution, not the problem,” Angry said.

“This party feels right for me. It’s a conservative party and all their policies are about being a sovereign country.”

Angry has a long list of accomplishments with youth advocate, reporter, actor and politician on the list but Angry said his biggest passion is music.

“Performing gives me great joy. When I perform live I’m in love with the moment

and the audience becomes part of that journey,” he said.

“Blood, Sweat and Beers is about great musicians stepping back into a time that is still talked about, that inspires musicians today.

“The songs we perform will live forever and the show will be high octane and adrenaline pumping.”

I find it sad if I hear a man talking down to his partner or vice versa and I realise that they learned to communicate in this negative way as a child. We all have an inner child made up of the memories of that little person we once were and the life lessons we learned and that colours how we relate to others and how we relate to ourselves. If that inner child has been damaged in any way be it by physical, sexual or verbal abuse or negativity then it needs the opportunity to be released from the prison of the past, heal and move on.

We all know individuals who have all the charm of a dial tone, who recite all the things that are wrong in their lives and in those of others and we may sometimes even avoid them. If you are the victim of negative emotions then it’s time to change. THE Noosa Outrigger Canoe Club is calling on Noosa Council to build a water sports facility for the growing club.

Club president Brian Rogers said the club was growing rapidly, and hoped the building would be back on Noosa Council’s agenda soon.

“After operating on the Noosa River for 25 years, our 150 paddlers look forward to the day the local council recognises how the Noosa Outrigger Canoe Club and its activities add strength to the social fabric of the Noosa community,” he said.

“The club is now growing exponentially as it welcomes new members and provides

competition in all age groups and we are currently looking to establish a program for juniors next season.”

Mr Rogers also said that while in office, former councillor Russell Green had advocated for the provision of a facility near the Noosa slipway.

“Currently, Noosa Outriggers have a lease arrangement with the Noosa Council allowing the outriggers to occupy part of Chaplin Park, with its excellent ease of access to the river and ocean,” Mr Rogers said.

“However, as the club’s membership grows in all age groups, the club’s growth is being hindered by inadequate training and meeting

rooms, a shortage of storage space and inadequate toilet provision.”

Noosa Council property and facilities manager Clint Irwin said the council would consider the club’s request.

“The council recognises the needs of the Noosa Outrigger Canoe Club and intends to consider the club’s requirements as part of the upcoming management plan for the Noosa River foreshore,” he said.

“The management plan will also consider feedback from other stakeholders and the community regarding current and appropriate future uses to maintain the amenity of this precious community asset.”

Pet owners are being urged to be responsible after a recent dog attack in Noosa.

The doggy-doos and don’ts NOOSA Council is warning dog owners to control their pets or risk prosecution.

The council takes responsible pet ownership seriously and will pursue legal action in the event of dog attacks, says acting local laws co-ordinator Phil Montague.

The warning comes as a Sunshine Beach dog owner was fined $1500 in Noosa Magistrates’ Court for a dog

attack at Sunshine Beach last year, in which a woman and her Cavoodle were injured.

“This attack happened in a council park and could have been prevented had the owner of the offending animal complied with the law and had it on a leash,” Mr Montague said.

“The incident was not only frightening for the victim, but costly, with her dog requiring more than $2000

worth of treatment, including two operations.”

“The most recent case followed a council investigation to identify the dog’s owner, with information from the public helping bring the matter before the court.”

In addition to the fine the offending dog owner was ordered to pay $1900 worth of professional costs.

“This result reflects the council’s

commitment to responsible pet ownership and demonstrates the seriousness with which the courts deal with dog attacks,” Mr Montague said He said it was not the first time the council had prosecuted irresponsible pet owners. Besides prosecution in the event of a dog attack, dog owners who allow their pets to wander also face fines in excess of $230, plus impound charges.

“Responsible pet ownership can be as simple as making sure gates are closed to stop dogs wandering the street, or by keeping dogs leashed around other animals or people,” Mr Montague said.

“Dangerous dogs have no place in our community and it is every dog owner’s responsibility to ensure their animal does not pose a risk to other people or animals.”

Rosie marries when she is still prostrate with grief over the loss on the Front of the “Pal” she was engaged to, and must then repair what becomes a difficult relationship.

The deft light touch of the author does not disguise the changing world that families of that era faced, but the humorous and at times moving anecdotes, and the sense of fun throughout the pages, makes this a most engaging read. It is available from Noosa Library.

Noosaville Library has an eclectic range of periodicals for every interest.

One of my favourites is “Get Lost” in which I literally lose myself planning my next getaway: it covers travel from Lear jets to backpacks in the hot vacation spots in the world.

The “New Yorker” gets me to the Big Apple for the latest Broadway shows, galleries and business news and I didn’t have to spend a dime. Another favourite from the Library is “Rolling Stone”, that time immemorial publication of rock and roll that reinvents itself from

decade to decade.

‘Glam and gossip’ are more your style? Try “Cosmopolitan”, “Belle”, “Marie Claire” and “Woman’s Day”.

“Vogue” and “Vanity Fair” are waiting for the fashion aficionados. There’s paddle boarding and surf magazines like the surfer’s bible “Tracks”, and “Waves” for when you’re out of the water. Foodies can sample “Feast”, “Super food ideas”, and “Jamie” who wants to “make you a better cook”.

Then there’s “Australian’s Men’s Health”, “Australian Gourmet Traveller”, “Australian Handyman”, “Australian House and Garden”, “Australian Home Beautiful”.

The list is endless. Who needs the supermarket? Did I mention they were free?

Horde of medals for Infinity team INFINITY Martial Arts Noosa attended the Queensland Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Circuit last month bringing home a horde of medals.

Organisers of the state competition said the event was the biggest in Queensland, and were proud of the high level of skill shown by competitors.

defence and karate black belt Andy Meek has raised the bar and done it again retaining his Queensland titles for the third year in a row.

Mr Meek competed in the Heavyweight Division in the 50 to 54 age group and smashed the 500 metres,

1000 metres and the one-minute sprint challenge which was open to all age groups.

Mr Meek kept a strong lead as he took out first place in the one-minute sprint by a seven-metre lead.

Mr Meek said his success was due to his martial arts, mindset and bodyweight conditioning training.

The next competition sees Mr Meek hoping to retain his Australian and Pan Pacific titles later this year.

River cleans up after rain

By JACK MANGROVE IT IS truly amazing how quick the river clears after a rain evert like last weekend, with the bigger tides we had earlier in the week having a great deal to do with it.

The Noosa River has really cleaned up and the fish are very active because of it. Bream are in good numbers around the rock bar near the Tewantin Marina and it is holding some good concentrations of fish.

Live herring and mullet fillet are great baits for fishing this area, you may also pick up one of the winter variety as well.

Woods Bay is also fishing well for trevally and tailor and the late afternoon are fishing extremely well.

Fishing surface in the low light periods is great fun, poppers and surface walkers have been responsible for some great captures. Soft plastics are also worth a go here as well, and with so many prawns in the river, the prawn profile is perfect.

The river mouth is holding some good sized jewies and the top of the tide coupled with fresh mullet or local squid will give you a great chance of catching a nice fish or two.

The Dog Beach and Frying Pan have seen some quality whiting with some of the bigger fish falling for smaller poppers.

For the offshore gang, the close in reefs will be fished extremely well over the next couple of week with both sweetlip and squire dominating the captures.

Jew shoal and Sunshine Reef will be the pick of the destinations this week with floated pilchards drifted out with a burley trail the most effective method. Pelagics are still around and on the move and in particular longtail tuna and spanish mackerel.

Metal slugs and fast moving troll-

Johnny Beck pulled in a nice jew off the Noosa River Mouth Rocks. ing lures like the Nomad Madscad are very effective and can be trolled at high speeds.

Heading out a little further afield, North Reef has seen some nice snapper, pearl perch, jew and cobia. Chardons has also been firing with big

cod and larger snapper. Fishing the Barwon Banks should also be possible as the swell and wind is forecast to drop over the weekend.

On the beaches, tailor and jewies will be patrolling the surf gutters on Noosa’s North Shore with and the

night time sessions the most popular.

Best not to be under-gunned when fishing the beach at night so it pays to have a larger outfit fitted with heavier line for when the bigger jewies are on the chew.

Further up towards Teewah,

bream, whiting and dart are in good numbers and there are some great looking gutters up towards Double Island Point.

By The Driver TEWANTIN Noosa Bowls LATE week rain created havoc and Wednesday and Friday Bowls days were cut short with rain and Thursday Jackpot Pairs was cancelled.

We were fortunate to have the Saints and Sinners group from NSW turn up on Friday to play in our club mixed triples.

This group has been visiting our club a few times each year. It is always a pleasure for our club to host these players and play against them in bowls days.

The Bali dream factory ONE of the things I’ve loved about Bali since the very early days is that it’s a place where people can reinvent themselves and make their dreams come true.

Always wanted to be a fashion designer? Well now you are. Want to start a magazine or a website? Here you can. Become a furniture importer? Too easy.

Because there aren’t many rules it’s always been a good place for start-ups, and because the Balinese are so creative you’ve got an eager labour force that can make anything, copy anything.

Way back in the last century it was pretty basic, of course, but clothing start-ups like Double Dragon, Om Bali and Little Dogs of Bali, which all began with surfers doing overland runs to Java in dodgy buses to source fabric, then finding a few tailors in the dusty gangs of Kuta who could follow a pattern, created lucrative careers for people who dared to dream.

In recent years I’ve followed with interest and growing admiration the burgeoning careers of two young people who live in Bali and with whom our family has been fortunate enough to have a long association.

Wayan Agus Parwita came into our lives as a driver, and not a very good one!

A graduate of Udayana University, Wayan was looking at a good career in hospitality when the bombs went off in Kuta.

As tourism crumbled he was forced to find work on the Carnival cruise line in the Caribbean for $US70 a month plus tips, but love of a girl brought him home and he got a licence and became a driver, taking tourists on day trips, very slowly and nervously to start with.

Our friend Sue liked his quiet authority and easygoing charm and hired him as her driver while she built a villa and looked at other investment opportunities.

That’s where we came in. On loan from his real job, Wayan drove me around Bali while I wrote a book about the place and then made a short film to promote the book.

But he was much more than a driver, he became part of the story, and a very special friend.

Last month he drove us up to Johnny Blundstone’s eco resort in the foothills of Mount Batu Karu for a splendid lunch.

It was a rare driving assignment for Wayan, who is much in demand these days as a project manager on building developments, but on the way he made a detour to show us his latest project, a coconut oil processing plant on the outskirts of a tiny mountain village.

Wayan’s journey began with helping create a plant for cold-brewed coffee and now in addition to the coconut oil he is working on a major banana flour project, bringing in his brother, one of Bali’s leading pastry chefs, to head up production.

And then there’s Little Audrey.

Audrey Petrelluzzi, from the French territory of Guadalupe in the Caribbean, was a marketing intern (or stagiere) at Quiksilver Europe in France when my friend Jeff Brad-

burn, then sales manager of Quik Europe, contacted me to see if I could offer her the same deal at the Noosa Festival of Surfing.

Audrey came to Noosa and lived and worked with us for a couple of months and became part of the family.

She moved to Bali five or six years ago to pursue her dream to create an environmentally responsible swimwear brand.

I doubt that she anticipated this would involve a lot of hard work and frequent financial hardships, but at last her Petite Terre brand, popular in Bali for a few years now, is getting some traction internationally.

Over a little family soiree at her villa the other night, Audrey proudly announced that Petite Terre was the number one Coup de Coeur selection for this month’s Mode City swimwear and lingerie salon in Paris.

This is big, really big.

Cooroora challenge is above and beyond MOUNT Cooroora is the scene of one of the most gruelling and challenging athletic events Australia has to offer and continues to attract competitors from around the world.

As part of the King of the Mountain festival, Sunday 24 July marks the 38th anniversary of the notoriously steep 4.2 kilometre Bendigo Bank ‘King of the Mountain Challenge’.

A project of The Cooroy and Pomona Lion’s Club, the King of the Mountain Festival brings together a host of attractions and event experiences, and competitors and spectators alike can look forward to another fun-filled event which includes other family friendly races, heritage markets, antiques fair, amusement rides, local cuisine and live music all within the beautiful hinterland setting of Pomona.

Festivities will begin early with the arrival of many different car clubs showing off their classic vehicles in the lead up to the big race at 2.30pm. Celebrations will continue afterwards and into the evening with live music and free entertainment.

There will also be the inaugural ‘Prince and Princess’ race on Saturday 23 July. Aimed at children aged 9-13, there are many prizes up for grabs and the opportunity to present the main race winner with their trophy on the Sunday.

In the lead-up to the main event is the 10th annual Poker Run on Sunday 3 July.

Proudly supported by the Gympie Historical Motorcycle Club, riders and their passengers will enjoy a scenic trip through the beautiful Noosa Hinterland and can join in on a friendly game of poker along the way by collecting cards from designated stops.

The holder of the best poker hand at the end of the day is declared the winner and there are additional random prize draws during the day. Last year saw over 300 riders participate in the major Cooroy-Pomona Lions Club fund-raiser.

Cost of entry is $20 per rider (including poker hand) plus $10 per pillion (non-poker hand). Registrations commence from 7.30am at Stan Topper Park, Pomona.

Bacon and egg muffins are available to purchase before a 9am departure. Free tea and coffee and home-made morning tea is available.

The ride finishes at the Country Life Hotel in Kin Kin where riders can enjoy a beer during the presentation and free sausage sizzle.

Amateur boxers do Oz proud on Poland visit

By RON LANE TWO weeks ago, a Queensland amateur boxing team flew to Poland to box in a tournament against the Polish national team. Happy to relate two members Brock Shelly and Taylah Robertson of the Impact Boxing Academy Cooroy, were on board.

News to hand tells us that the trip has so far been a tremendous success. Right from the time they stepped off the plane in Kyrnica Zdroj, a town of some 11, 000 people, our young athletes have received a tremendous welcome. In the words of Impact boxing coach Mark Evans, "The word back is that the kids are treated like rock stars. The support for the tournament by the locals has been tremendous. A big crowd even turned up for the weigh-ins.”

Arriving with time to acclimatise and settle in, our two locals had their first fight last Friday evening. Brock won his fight by a K.O. in round three. Brock, we are informed, boxed well and in the third he stopped his Polish opponent with good heavy body punching.

rounds. In a telephone hook prior to her fight, she expressed some concern to her club coach, as her opponent had what seemed the advantage of weight, age and experience.

Monday evening, round two of the tournament saw Taylah record her second win, this time beating the Polish National champion on points. However, Brock lost a points decision in what was a very scrappy push and shove affair from his Polish opponent.

Considering that this has been Taylah's first international tournament, her performance has been outstanding.

Such has been the support for the tournament that the locals gave the kids Monday off so they could attend and give support to their fighters.

Yesterday, the team travelled to Slovakia where they will take part in the four-day international tournament known as the Black Diamond Cup. We wish them well.

To know that we have two amateur athletes boxing at international level representing their state and indeed their country, speaks volumes for both the youth and coaches of our local community. Well done to all.
