Some locals - and the mayor in particular - believe it is not.

But that wasn’t the feeling on Melbourne talkback radio, when two callers suggested Cranbourne and Cranbourne West for the next round of the controversial documentary series, set to air late next year.

Casey Mayor Sam Aziz told The News such a suggestion was an “insult”. He added that Cranbourne featured “great schools, great shopping” and “recreational opportunities”.

It’s been more than a year since SBS launched the first series of Struggle Street, filmed around Mount Druitt in Sydney’s west, sparking claims of “poverty porn”.

But SBS has endorsed what the show stands for in a statement, saying it will “shine a light on social and economic disadvantage in Australia”.

In late April SBS announced the commissioning of a second series which will be filmed in several locations around Queensland and Victoria.

A spokesperson from SBS confirmed it is “early in the production process, but that a number of councils have been approached for filming permits”.

However SBS confirmed no locations had been decided on.

Maribyrnong Council has already turned down a request for filming in Braybrook and Cr Aziz advised that the Casey Council had not been approached by SBS. Suburbs being tossed around as suitable locations for the Struggle Street cameras include Broadmeadows, Sunshine and Dandenong but talkback radio callers turned the spotlight on Cranbourne on Friday 3 June.

One caller, a former resident of Cranbourne West, recalled having her birdbath stolen in a new estate and put

the area forward for filming.

But Cr Aziz said Cranbourne’s community spirit was alive, denying it was material for the observational documentary series.

“At the moment I see people on Facebook saying we need to get our area back, we need to claim it back, it’s getting out of control - the breakins, the car thefts and burglaries,” Mr Munso said. “Drugs in Casey is a big issue, I have dealt with kids on ice as young 13.”

Cranbourne West resident, Sonia Pau, 22 said her home town was a nice area and didn’t deserve the scrutiny Struggle Street would bring.

“I have lived in Cranbourne West a year and I find it’s better than Noble Park, Dandenong and Frankston,” she said.

“I was living in Noble Park since I was five years old and I feel safer in Cranbourne West - I would care if Struggle Street came to Cranbourne because I don’t think it deserves it.

“You can walk the streets at night in Cranbourne, you can’t walk the streets at night in Noble Park or Dandenong.”

But it seems even if series producers, Keo Films were to approach the City of Casey, it would be futile.

Cr Aziz told The News, “I would not support Cranbourne or any other community in Casey as a location for Struggle Street.”

Mayor sets the record straight The City of Casey Mayor has expressed shock at the methods and decision by the Essential Services Commissions (ESC) to reject Council’s application for a rate cap variation, adversely impacting the delivery of essential community infrastructure into Casey (Victoria’s largest and one of the fastest growing cities).

'PMMPXJOH UIF JNQMFNFOUBUJPO PG BO FGmDJFODZ SFWJFX three years ago, which is delivering almost $1 million worth of savings to the ratepayer every year, Council applied to the ESC for a very modest rate variation of less than 1% (just .97%) above the 2.5% rate cap, or just $14 per household per year, to secure vital infrastructure for Casey’s growing community.

The ESC denied Council’s application and suppporting documents, which provided extensive BOBMZTJT NPEFMMJOH FWJEFODF BOE KVTUJmDBUJPO GPS UIF need for a variation over 700 pages including supporting documents, yet approved it for another council whose submission was only two pages! This is a very poor and inconsistent approach to decision making and smacks of political interference - the outcome of which strips $1.6 million from Council’s 2016-17 capital works program, and will contribute to a $168 million funding shortfall over the next ten years if this approach is not corrected.

The ESC had suggested that Council should instead borrow the money to fund critical infrastructure. That would be akin to a family taking out a personal loan to buy the groceries.

The problem with borrowing money is that eventually, it must be paid back. Your Council represents very responsible municipal government, and WILL NOT BE BORROWING money that will become a burden on our children and grandchildren.

This means unfortunately that the ESC decision will not only impact the delivery of new infrastructure, but will also increase waiting lists to access family services, and families in growing communities will face a lengthy car trip to access sporting facilities.

Just $14 extra per house per year would save Council taking on millions of dollars of debt, which will then be a burden for future generations.

Some residents have asked why is Council pursuing a rate variation whilst building Bunjil Place, which is a $125 million cultural and civic precinct for the enjoyment of all our residents. The answer is that Bunjil Place has been planned and budgeted for several years ago, and accordingly its construction will not impact on rates by even one cent.

In addition Bunjil Place will provide much needed facilities such as a new state-of-the-art library, a function centre and 800-seat regional theatre for the use of our school communities and for entertainment of our residents, who will no longer need to travel to the city to catch an international play or performance.

A handful of ill-informed serial protesters and armchair critics have even suggested that Council should stop the construction of this facility!

Council has signed a construction contract for Bunjil Place, and reneging on this now will cost the

ratepayers millions of dollars in damages for nothing in return.

The City of Casey is not in the business of ripping up legally binding contracts for the sake of a political stunt!

This is short term petty politics that will have long term affects for the residents of the City of Casey.

A future State Government will modify this policy and residents could be facing double digit rate increases to make up for the infrastructure shortfall UP DPOUJOVF UP CVJME B mSTU DMBTT DJUZ One only has to look at the experience of cities in NSW, where rate capping has damaged them beyond rescue, and where communities are suffering as a result of inadequate and very poorly maintained infrastructure.

It was also disappointing that the ESC denied Council’s application on the basis Casey has received funding from the State Government’s Interface Growth Fund.

The Interface Growth Fund was developed to assist growth area councils like Casey to address the infrastructure backlog typically developed over years of sustained growth in outer suburbs.

It is not a secure ongoing funding source and should not be used as a substitute for the rate base.

I also question the State Government’s decision to appoint the ESC to undertake the assessment process, given their lack of understanding of the MPDBM HPWFSONFOU mOBODJBM DPOUFYU The ESC does not seem to have the required understanding of Council budgets to be given the considerable responsibility of assessing these applications. The fact they said we had an underlying surplus of $33.9 million is nonsense.

This is the same ESC that let South East Water bills increase by an average of 8.25% above CPI each year for the last eight years, for no additional service level, yet has decided that Casey ratepayers should be limited to CPI on their Council rates and lose the projects that would have been funded, for just an additional $14 per home per year.

We should have been afforded a suitably experienced body to make an educated assessment of these applications, rather than the ESC that is drawing erroneous conclusions and making inconsistent decisions.

Council undertakes a stringent process over many months to compile a budget that delivers for the community while minimising the impact on ratepayers.

There are over 5,400 separate major item lines in the City of Casey budget, which are scrutinised by the Councillors and the Executive, item by item, line by line, during the budget process.

It is easy to be an armchair expert, but this simplistic analysis of Council’s budget demonstrates a failure of the authors to understand the process and perhaps even the budget itself.

If this same basic approach which the handful of weekly protesters have adopted was applied to running a Council as it is to being a critic, the city would collapse in a matter of weeks.

It is no coincidence also that there is a Council election later this year, so the handful of armchair critics and serial protesters are DWWHPSWLQJ WR EXLOG XS D SURĂ€OH DW WKH H[SHQVH of the interest of the City of Casey and its residents, and through pretending to act with all care, but with absolutely no responsibility.

As the largest and one of the fastest growing municipalities in Victoria, Casey has pressures responding to our rapid growth that most councils don’t have. However, through careful budgeting, Casey’s residents continue to have one of the lowest rates per household in outer metropolitan Melbourne whilst Council continues to deliver a record capital works investment into our city.

Counting the cost of Apex

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH THE Adendorff family of three are victims of Melbourne’s outlaw youth gang surge and they have been left with a trashed car, big bill and disrupted future - things they fled South Africa hoping to avoid.

Johan Adendorff was stabbed in the neck while driving in South Africa.

The father of two girls from Endeavour Hills was then stopped at a stop sign in a small country town with his window down when the attempted hijacking occurred.

“I was stabbed with a screwdriver in 2004,” Johan said.

“The guy tried to hijack my car ... that and to give my daughter’s a better future was why we left South Africa.”

Crime was what pushed the Adendorff family out of their home town and crime is what now plagues their life in Casey.

The Adendorff family have lived in Endeavour Hills for 11 years without any trouble.

But in the early hours of Thursday 2 June, Johan’s daughter, 23-yearold Nicole, had her car smashed and vandalised, with ‘Apex’ carved on the bonnet - for what appears to be no reason at all.

“My driver’s side window and mirror was smashed but nothing was stolen,” Nicole said.

Nicole’s 2007 Volkswagen Polo was parked on West Vista Place in Narre Warren North when bandits went wild on a 12-car vandalism spree.

Nicole’s GPS was not stolen from inside the car despite the vandals having full access to it.

“By the damage they must have used a hammer or some sort of instrument not a foot or body part,” Johan said.

On his way to assess the damage to his daughter’s car Johan came across two other victims.

“I was driving down James Cook Drive in Endeavour Hills and noticed a red Toyota with ‘Apex’ also carved into the bonnet so I pulled over,” Johan said.

Nicole and Johan will keep the VW locked away in their garage until they have decided how they will go about getting the car repaired.

“A guy in a Mitsubishi also stopped and told me someone flung a wheelie bin at his car that same night and damaged his radiator and grill.”

Johan said the owner of the red Toyota reported seeing four people trashing her car.

“She said she saw one jumping on her car - the Toyota was stomped on.”

Nicole, now unable to drive her car to work until it gets fixed, is trying to figure out the best way to move forward - the car sitting in their garage.

Nicole has contacted the State Government’s Victims of Crime to see what can be done, but is reluctant to pay $1000 in excess if she is to make an insurance claim.

On the day of the spree, Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Ivan Bobetic told a media briefing that cars across the Hallam, Narre Warren and Narre Warren North areas were affected.

“It’s unknown if members of the notorious car-stealing gang (Apex)

were actually involved,” Det Bobetic said.

“It’s certainly an inquiry that we’ll be making however it would appear that this sort of offending isn’t of the same magnitude or modus operandi, if you like, that we are uncovering in his particular area,” he said.

While the investigation is ongoing Johan is still looking for answers.

“There’s no respect for other people’s property it’s all extra money on top for us for someone to have fun ... or whatever they want to call it,” he said.

The spree comes after more than nine months of home invasions targeting Casey residents - but is nothing new to Johan.

“The crime in South Africa was really bad, the home invasions that are occurring now in Melbourne have been happening over there for many years - if someone is home they have access to everything,” he said.

Out of the 12 cars defaced in the early hours of Thursday 2 June, two including Nicole's car were carved with "Apex".

Nicole is lucky she is on holidays from university - with no car to get her to Swinburne's Hawthorn campus.

Bandits target nightclub patrons as they walk home

The two victims, aged 20, were walking home from the popular nightclub about 2am on Sunday 5 June when a car slowed down next to them and offered them a lift.

20-year-olds entered the car the offenders assaulted them.

Demands for wallets and phones were made and the men drove off toward Narre Warren.

The victims’ goods were stolen and they were let out of the car on Belgrave Hallam Road in Narre Warren east.

Detective Senior Constable Matt Davey is investigating this drive by assault. Anyone with information on the incident is urged to call him at the Narre Warren police station.

IN TWO separate instances, males walking home from the Empire nightclub in Narre Warren were attacked by three males of Islander descent.

Police cannot confirm if both instances were linked or committed by the same group of three men.

The first bashing occurred in the early hours of Saturday 28 May, when a male victim was

walking home alone on the north side of the Princes Highway toward Berwick.

As the male victim approached the Monash Freeway overpass three males of Islander appearance punched him four times in the face and pushed him to the ground.

The offenders went through his pockets and asked him what he had on him.

The victim handed over his iPhone and bank cards but the offenders did not steal anything.

Instead the trio fled the scene and walked

Last year’s crime statistics revealed offenders aged 10 to 14 committed more than double the number of burglaries and break-

Derryn puts it down to school truancy.

“They aren’t going to school - if they were going to school they wouldn’t have time to be doing all this,” he said.

“Also when they see the older gang members being treated with kid gloves they think ‘oh well, it’s not that bad’.”

AN INDUSTRIAL business in Lynbrook was targeted in a Molotov cocktail attack.

The raider, who was wearing jeans and a hooded jumper and had their face covered, first threw a brick at the door but did not gain access so they poured petrol at the base of door from a petrol can.

They then threw a Molotov cocktail against the door and when it failed to ignite the petrol they fled on foot.

The incident occurred about 3.30am on Friday 5 June at Marvel Slabs on the South Gippsland Highway and was captured on CCTV. Anyone with information on the attempted arson is urged to call Detective Senior Constable Ruben McAlister at Narre Warren Police Station on 9705 3111.

“Can you remember a time when anybody ever got jailed for animal cruelty?” Derryn said.

The RSPCA to a large degree are doing their job but it falls down along the way and I can’t recall when anybody got jailed for animal cruelty.

“The sad thing is too many judges and magistrates are too scared to set a precedent for fear their sentences will get over turned.

A LONE thief emptied a cash register at a 7-Eleven store in Cranbourne North in the early hours of Monday 6 June.

About 3am, a man wearing blue jeans and a black hooded jumper with his hands and face covered demanded the attendant give him cigarettes and money.

He threatened the worker at the South Gippsland Highway store with a weapon, but one was not presented.

The offender is described as having a medium to large build.

“We need someone to keep the bastards honest again,” Philip said.

Derryn responded: “Well that’s exactly what I’ve done ... I’m combining both Gough Whitlam’s motto and Don Chipp’s, it’s time to keep the bastards honest.”

Shaping his campaign around his long-term stand for tougher court sentencing and a public register of convicted sex offenders, Derryn’s Justice Party goes by the motto ‘It’s just common sense’.

Common sense he says that needs to be concentrated on reforms to bail and parole, animal rights, voluntary euthanasia and domestic violence reform.

“I was the first MC for the first Oscars Law rally - we’d get on the parliament steps and the Opposition spokesperson would be there getting behind you and when they got into government the other Opposition leader would come and support the next rally.

“It’s a cycle and it's bullshit.

“I’m not some vigilante that gets up and says lock ‘em all up, fine ‘em all, but penalties have to be tougher because it has to be a deterrent as well. I would like to see people jailed for animal cruelty when necessary,” Derryn said.

While the City of Casey has the highest number of police reports of family violence in the state and as intervention order breaches continue to climb, Derryn put it back on the courts.

“When a man breaks his wife’s jaw that should be treated no differently to when a man king-hits a stranger - but that’s not the case right now, a wedding ring is called a mitigating circumstance and that’s just bullshit.

“That’s the sort of thing that has to change and it’s the same thing with child pornography,” he said.

“It always ties back to the fact too many judges and magistrates are thinking too much about the rehabilitation and the effect on the criminal than on the victim.”

Derryn will continue his trip around Australia up until the 2 July election - having already travelled more than 7000 kilometres in his campaign bus.

Council’s application for a rate cap variation of 0.97 per cent states that it will only cost ratepayers $14 per household, just a few cups of coffee.

In the News story Rates Cap’s Tight Fit, the council has got their sums wrong admitting that if the rate cap was approved, homeowners would have to pay an average of $52 per household.

What has happened to the $14 cost per household? The council has not done its maths right and needs some tuition.

All ratepayers are being taken for granted.

Stand up and challenge the councils.

In the website Governing Australia “3 levels of law making” this proves that councils are cheating, lying to us ratepayers in order to pay for unwanted infrastructure which must be the responsibility of federal/ state/ territory governments, not councils.

Why do we need councils in the first place.

It is just a waste of billions of dollars of money siphoned off ratepayers.

Example, Australia has 565 councils.

CEOs are paid lucrative salaries plus perks which are more than premiers of states.

These billions can be put to use to boost the sagging Australian economy.

Since councils are just creations of state and territory governments they can be easily abolished and instead create regional offices to cater to the essential needs of the local community.

Councils thrive by cheating, lying to the ratepayers by bogus surveys just to get what they want.

All councils must remember that they work for us, we keep them employed by paying their fat salaries. We do not work for them.

FINNING First National Real Estate in Cranbourne snagged seven national awards at an in-house ceremony in Cairns.

The local agent is among First National Real Estate’s top national performers and was recognised on Thursday 19 May in front of former Australian Prime Minister John Howard.

The awards dinner was part of First National Real Estate’s joint Australian and New Zealand Convention.

Finning First National Real Estate principal John Tucker said market forces meant hard times for many agencies across Australia.

“Real estate prices and population growth slowed in the past 12 months, which combined with tightened bank lending criteria to create significant changes to market dynamics in most First National Real Estate locations,” Mr Tucker said.

On the night, two of the Finning team received a total of seven national awards, making them the best salespeople in such categories in Australia.

Veteran salesperson Frank Barrett, who has been a part of the Finning team for more than 26 years, was named in the National Top Ten for Australian Salesperson of the Year.

He took home a total of four awards in the Residential and Combined categories for the highest number of exclusive listings and the

highest number of settled sales in 2015.

Rural and lifestyle salesperson Jason Brown was recognised for his achievements in the lifestyle small acreage category and won trophies for the highest number of exclusive listings and the highest gross sales commission in Australia.

The keynote speaker at the convention was John Howard.

OLD footy jumpers will be replaced at Hampton Park Football Club thanks to a State Government grant.

The club’s secretary Peter Craig said grants such as this one of $2700 made a big difference to local sports clubs.

“We’re thrilled that this grant will enable us to replace our players’ old footy jumpers that were just about past their use-by date,” he said.

The club has received the grant as part of the latest round of VicHealth’s Active Club Grants program and can use the funding to purchase new sports items and equipment.

CONSTRUCTION work for the $18 million redevelopment of the Casey Indoor Leisure Centre is well underway with the upgraded

facilities scheduled to be ready for residents early next year.

The project of expanding and revamping the Casey regional basketball and netball facility at CILC began in January with Casey Mayor Sam Aziz saying the developments would improve multiple aspects of the centre.

“Big changes can be seen at the Terry Vickerman building with the entire show court site demolished and the site now a hive of construction and earth work activity.

“This redevelopment will deliver five new courts, including a premiere show court, spectator seating for 1500 people, a multipurpose function room, new foyer and entrance, upgraded and additional car parking, cafe and piazza and new change rooms and toilets at this popular facility.”

Cr Aziz said the investment in the centre would continue to promote the growth of sport in the local area.

“The redevelopment is expected to more than double the visitations to the site each year, improve the capacity of our netball and basketball clubs and attract the highest level of competition to Casey.

“The project is highly anticipated among our sports community so the council is pleased to report that the project is tracking well,” Cr Aziz said.

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH BENJI the free range rabbit beat death twice before he died - and now his grieving owner has lost him a second time after thieves ransacked her Lynbrook home and stole Benji’s ashes.

Maria Priestley calls Benji, the mini lop rabbit, her best friend.

"He was my little mate”, she said.

“He was more like a little puppy dog.

“He was 24/7 free range around the house, he was toilet trained and he was very special.”

Having taken on some of her biggest life challenges to date with Benji by her side, Maria said it was now knowing she’d never have him that hurt the most.

“I’m gutted and totally heart-broken - I just want him back,” Maria said.

Burglars stole thousands of dollars of camera equipment and electrical goods from Maria and her housemate.

But that can all be replaced Benji can’t, Maria said.

“It’s a $20 box I bought from the crematorium - it’s worthless to them.”

Maria had four sets of pets' ashes stored in her wardrobe and believes the thieves mistook the wooden boxes for jewellery boxes.

Benji’s good friend Minty the guinea pig was also stored in the box which was stolen and Maria is now dealing with ongoing trauma from the break-in.

“It’s been an emotional time since being broken into, I still feel that their presence is in the house,” Maria said.

“It’s affected mine and my housemates' day to day lives, I feel like we’re in lockdown, everything is locked and I’m scared they will come back.

“I had Benji cremated so wherever I go in life he’ll be

there with me and knowing that I don’t have his ashes by my side ultimately means he’s gone forever - we faced death together - nothing can explain that feeling.”

Maria posted a message to the thieves on her Facebook page asking for a safe return of her beloved Benji and Minty’s ashes, saying ‘please drop them at the front door, no questions asked’.

A police report was filed on the day of the break-in on Tuesday 24 May but no witnesses came forward and no fingerprints were found.

BY JARROD McALEESE THE population of Clyde is set to swell by 30,000 as a new suburb is announced for the growth corridor.

However the council will have to find a new name for the 10,000 home suburb.

Casey council initially assigned the name ‘McPherson’ to the prospective suburb in honour of a World War I Digger.

However a new name will now have to be found after Clyde historian Joan Vanderhorn found that there was no link between McPherson and Clyde after discovering the family was actually from Clydesdale in northern Victoria.

The new suburb will be located north of Ballarto Road, east of Bells Road and Smiths Lane and west of Muddy Gates Lane and McCormacks Road.

Metropolitan Planning Authority chief executive Peter Seamer said the project would be one of the last developments in Melbourne's south-east.

“We know there is a high demand for housing in Melbourne’s outer south-east and the MPA is responding to this demand by planning for welldesigned precincts that will be great places to live.

“This region will not be built out any more, now that the urban growth boundary is solidly

“The schools, the public transport and the community resources must be built at the same time as the housing.

“We need to see the plans for the schools, the transport, the library, the parks and the other community resources, and we need to see them urgently,” Ms Springle said.

The McPherson Precinct Structure plan was opened for community consultation on 2 June with a further information session organised by the MPA and Casey Council to be held on Thursday 16 June from 4.30pm to 6.30pm at Clyde Hall, 30 Railway Road, Clyde.

House trashed, cash, jewellery stolen

A CRANBOURNE homeowner went out for just one hour and came home to a trashed house — $5000 in cash and $7000 in jewellery and goods stolen.

The Kingsbarn Court property was ransacked between 9am and 10am on Monday 23 May. Thieves entered the property through the rear yard, smashed

open an aluminium sliding window and ransacked a bedroom, taking an assortment of jewellery and cash.

A desktop computer hard drive was also taken and the monitor smashed.

The bandits also rendered the LCD TV useless by smashing it and pulled out the entertainment cabinet and destroyed that too.

A passageway cupboard was opened and the wiring to the NBN cut, which turned off the security alarm.

IT WAS the animal cruelty story that sent shockwaves through Melbourne - and the man first on the scene hopes CCTV, paid for by community donations, will stop it from ever happening again.

Battersby Way in Lysterfield South was splattered with the blood of two kangaroos and a joey in March this year.

Robert Bishop found the tortured bodies and decapitated joey near his driveway, after he disturbed the perpetrators.

He calls them “a group of yobbos”.

A night after the incident made headlines, Mr Bishop recalls a second visit.

“There hasn’t been another butchering like that one, but they came back and our rubbish bins ended up all over the road,” he said.

“Just ours, not our neighbours’ bins and it wasn’t windy.”

In the early hours of Wednesday 23 March near the Churchill National Park, Mr Bishop heard hoons and saw six to eight men gathered around a twitching kangaroo.

“They were standing in the headlights of a very large white 4WD ... the unfortunate kangaroo was upside down, its legs splayed wide and one of the men was hacking away at it with a very large knife.

“The other males were talking excitedly and watching the spectacle, while another group was on the grass and I could hear a hammering sound com-

The grisly discovery prompted Mr Bishop into crowd funding for a set of CCTV cameras to catch the deviants in the act.

So far he has raised $1300.

“I am thrilled with that amount - I was absolutely astounded,” he said, even though it is not enough money to finish the project alone.

Due to the expensive nature of the project Mr Bishop has enlisted the help of a security company, and says the cameras will be up and working by the end of the year.

Report highlights path

“That suggests there’ll be some young people falling through those cracks and not getting those employability skills,” Jennifer Ebdon said.

She and fellow school and community development officer Mary Tresize-Brown launched a report on the issue at the South East Local Learning and Employment Network (SELLEN) AGM at its new Langhorne Street headquarters in Dandenong on Thursday 2 June.

SELLEN was established in 2001 to bring together educators, employers, industry, welfare agencies, local government and non-government organisations.

The focus is giving 10 to 19-year-olds a better go at successfully moving through the education system to employment.

CEO Andrew Simmons said funding had been a major challenge for SELLENs over the past few years.

“A change of state government has brought with it the promise of four years of funding for LLEN (Learning and Employment Networks) core contracts,” he said.

“The confirmation of funding for LLENs out to 2019 has provided some security to programs and staffing.”

Mr Simmons said SELLEN was involved in developing many programs, initiatives and partnerships last year. These included the Young Parents Education Program at Cranbourne Secondary College, adding 173 new employers to its contact suite, and delivering a training awareness program to 150 at-risk young people.

Mr Simmons said SELLEN was also involved in more than 40 networks, steering groups and taskforces, “providing further support to like-minded organisations and initiatives in the region and across the state”.

“These relationships allow us to have an influence on many issues that impact young people, particularly those living within the SELLEN region,” he said.

Ms Tresize-Brown said consultation for the Business and Education Interaction in South-East Melbourne report across Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia started about 12 months ago and included 20 businesses from several sectors and 20 educators.

“We asked them very simple questions ... centred around how they interact with each other,” she said.

She and Ms Ebdon wanted to find out what worked for each party, she said, with the goal of finding out how to create a winwin-win situation for employer, school and student.

“We will take the report back to the 20 schools and 20 businesses,” she said.

In July they plan to use the report to start a conversation about easily bringing schools and businesses together.

Ms Ebdon said work experience was the most common way educators and businesses interacted.

But some schools have done away with the program, she said, because it was too time-consuming and not valuable enough.

Some employers also said they “preferred to have students who had been on that journey, decided what pathway they wanted to go down and could come to the workplace already focused”.

Ms Ebdon said many businesses didn’t know how to connect to educators, and vice-versa.

“There is untapped potential out there in the business community that we can harness,” she said.

“It’s time for the stakeholders to come

together and map a new way forward.”

She said the report also found that some schools thought they didn’t need to prepare students on an ‘academic path’ for work.

“For every student, regardless of the pathway that they take, their ultimate destination is a workplace,” Ms Ebdon said.

Prize money for the winner is $1000 and the Chamber has urged Casey residents to put pen to paper for the worthy award.

Cancer fighters AS MELANOMA is on Melbourne’s mind with the recent diagnosis of Hawthorn footballer Jarryd Roughead, it seemed fitting that melanoma would spark conversation at a Biggest Morning Tea event in Cranbourne.

The event held at the Cranbourne Football Club raised more than $5000 for the Cancer Council and even managed to help Cranbourne’s homeless at the same time.

Biggest Morning Tea organiser Roxanne Taranto, who took over the event when her own mum, Dianne Schreuder, died from kidney cancer, said the afternoon teas were always a success.

“It’s our 11th year, we had 80 people attend and over those years we have donated $60,311,” Ms Taranto said.

“Now one in two people are touched by cancer. When we started it was one in five.

“Cancer recovery is much better now than when we started running the morning teas which means the money is helping.”

The Cancer Council is aiming for 36,000 host registrations and so far has 27,023 hosts.

Ms Taranto said a speech by Ron Neyenhuis about his melanoma battle struck a chord.

“He is going through it now for the second time,” she said.

An auction and fruit and veggie stall helped raise funds at the tea on Thursday 26 May and leftovers were sent to the Cranbourne food truck.

THE Casey Environment Volunteer of the Year award was presented to Friends of Cardinia Creek founder Judy Smith at a civic reception held by the City of Casey on 3 June to coincide with World Environment Day. Mrs Smith was commended for her work in preserving and developing Cardinia Creek Bushland Reserves, particularly the Beaconsfield Flora and Fauna reserve, on a night that celebrated the conservation work of individuals and groups within the community.

The Friends of Cardinia Creek group was formed in 1998, with Mrs Smith and six other founding members still involved in volunteering today.

Working alongside her husband Ralph and other volunteers, the group holds monthly working bees

in which they conduct maintenance including the removal of weeds and replanting of thousands of indigenous plants funded through grants.

The group also organises Clean Up Australia Day events throughout Berwick and Beaconsfield, while Mrs Smith herself picks up rubbish twice a week in the area.

Mrs Smith attributed her continued service to two of her longstanding passions.

“I love the environment, I really do and I love volunteering as well, I have been doing it for over 40 years,” Mrs Smith said.

She praised the ongoing contributions of her fellow Friends of Cardinia Creek members and said the group had been a blessing to her.

“I have made lovely friends along the way, who are great volunteers and they help me greatly,” Mrs Smith said.

What’s on Victorian Cake Decorating Society

By JARROD POTTER TAKING to the big stage with gusto, Western Bulldogs footballer Bianca Jakobsson showed the footy world her on-field credentials under lights at Etihad Stadium.

Jakobsson, 23, was one of the Bulldogs’ best on Sunday afternoon in the second AFL Exhibition Series clash of the season as her side knocked over visiting Western Australia by 13 points.

Just standing on the field was aweinspiring for the Cranbourne VFL utility - let alone starring in the clash.

“Running out there, just really looked around and thought ‘wow, this is a dream come true’, and couldn’t really believe what was happening,” Jakobsson said. Woke up this morning (Monday) and got up for work thinking ‘is this actually happening?’ - it’s all happening so quickly.

“To get those couple of early goals settled the nerves a bit - once I got my first touch I think I settled into the game pretty well and just tried to go about my footy and play my role in the side.”

It took a while for the Dogs to get going - only kicking four behinds in the first term - but from there the gears started grinding into place as the Victorians surged.

Playing as a roaming forward, Jakobsson, in only her second AFL match, was tasked with getting into the contests as a de facto centre and working back to hurt the Swans the other way.

She took to that role and then some as Jakobsson racked up 22 touches, two match-defining goals and the honour of being named best afield.

The result came down to the wire as Jakobsson’s beloved Doggies had to see off the fast-finishing Swans, but a

“Getting around the girls - that was a really exciting moment of the game,” Jakobsson said. “It was an amazing celebration after beating WA - it was great to belt out the Doggies’ song in the rooms and something incredible to top off the day.

“It’s all just going so fast, and I can’t believe what is happening and I’m improving my footy more and more and that’s what I want to do ... to be playing at this level is a dream.”

She’s got an eye on the National Women’s League - set to launch in 2017 - but for now each match at the AFL level before that is a blessing that she wants to focus on.

“I think we all are - we’re all working towards that (NWL),” Jakobsson said. “The stepping stone is in place to 2017 and we’ve spoken about that in the

academy and even during the Doggies time - but yesterday was about yesterday and we were focused on getting the win.

“I think it’s definitely in the back of everyone’s mind and the journey into 2017 - we all want to play AFL footy and that’s definitely there.”

Jakobsson wanted to thank the Bulldogs for their support of women’s footy - as she relished every second in the Dogs ranks from training sessions, match analysis and preparation all the way through to singing the song after the victory.

Cavaliers get caught in a bit of a ‘funk’

By JARROD POTTER BIG V - ROUND 11 SLAYING the Dragons with an emphatic last-term lockdown, Casey Cavaliers stormed past Camberwell in a 71-62 victory.

Camberwell had contained Casey well enough through the first three terms, before Father Time himself - Matt Witherden (23 points, 12 rebounds) - continued his monster 2016 with his fifth double-double of the campaign. His inside-outside presence gave Camberwell too many headaches to deal with.

An extraordinary piece of fourth quarter defending had Casey hold the hosts to five. Two field goals and a free throw was the tally of Camberwell’s efforts down the stretch as the Cavaliers built a fortress around the defensive basket with Dean Johnson (12 points, eight rebounds), Brent Hobba (12 points, seven rebounds) and Mitch Chapman (eight points, seven rebounds).

Camberwell’s go-to tall Jovan Bojanic (20 points, 15 rebounds) was kept silent in the fourth as Johnson

and Hobba took the direct challenge while the Cavaliers’ total defensive effort across the board shut down the momentum.

“We actually didn’t defend too badly in the first three quarters, but they knocked down some shots,” Casey coach Stewart Baird said.

“It wasn't like the Shepp and Melton games where they were hitting them from everywhere - Bojanic was getting open from 12-15 foot and he kept knocking them down.

“We just had to find ways to make sure he wasn’t getting open and at the end of the day was just the usual team D, which is good to see as it’s been an area we’ve struggled with over the last few weeks.”

While the winning form is still there for Casey - sitting third with an 11-3 record - Baird thinks the side is still going through a rough patch and hopefully the weekend off will help them bounce back.

“The interesting thing is we started really well, we’ve hit a bit of what we’re describing it as a ‘funk’,” Baird said. “Not knocking down some of the

“It’s probably more mental to be honest (than injuries) - Lester is still

out and Stevie has a bit of an ankle issue, so that will help him.

“Everyone else is fit, but having Wednesday off and the weekend off means they should be refocused when we get back on the track next week.”

Casey returning on the Saturday 18 June for a triple header at home - youth men against Mornington, women against Pakenham and the men battling Warrnambool in a two v three epic.

“This competition is incredibly close and Warrnambool - despite sitting second - is probably the outstanding team at the moment and probably the team to beat,” Baird said.

In a canter, the Division 2 women’s team brushed aside Sherbrooke 94-50.

Sharing the minutes around, Casey coach Michael Davies threw in his entire roster to have a run at the severely depleted Suns’ line-up. Bec Magdich (17 points), Ruchelle Mccracken (16 points, 18 rebounds) and Tarryn Wilkin (14 points, 10 rebounds) led from the front while up and coming dual-sports star Jordanne Dyer (two points) made her senior debut.

Casey’s Youth Men did what was necessary to overcome Pakenham in a 67-57 victory. Nathan Dodgson (20 points) and Sam Pike (18 points, 17 rebounds) led the charge.

By JARROD POTTER VFL - ROUND 9 FIRING to the finish in Casey Fields’ cold quagmire, the Scorpions stoked the flames of their 2016 winning streak with a come-from-behind triumph over Port Melbourne.

The Boroughs were sent packing after a resounding fourth term from the Casey contingent - booting six unanswered goals to run away with the 12.14(86) to 7.9(51) triumph.

Attritional, contest-to-contest footy was the order of the day at Cranbourne as neither side could possess it cleanly early on.

But from the scrums emerged a few effective characters.

Showing that he’s a class above, even in the freezing and wet conditions, midfielder Ben Kennedy was in extraordinary form.

He popped up everywhere throughout the afternoon - attacking the contested footy through the middle, chipping in down back before storming up forward to shark the packs and boot three goals.

Casey was buoyed across the board and had well and truly jumped the Borough early on, but 2.6(18) doesn’t make for pretty reading as the chances fell by the wayside.

The middle terms were up for grabs and it was Port Melbourne’s turn to charge out of the blocks, booting ahead by the main break, but to Casey’s credit there was plenty of defensive might to hold up against the opposing force.

way they dug in and ground away and finished the game off.

Kennedy’s 30-disposal performance would have the Demons’ paying attention alongside his AFL-listed brethren Ben Newton (27 touches), Mitch White (24), Jack Grimes (24) and Alex Neal-Bullen (23).

“Pretty hard-nosed players in the group and those conditions suited those players and certainly didn’t let the team down in the way they weren’t about their football,” Plapp said.

“We’ve got a pretty strong system that seems to be working well and we’re

not getting away from that.

Top of the ladder with a one game buffer over Williamstown, Casey’s high flying start to 2016 will be tested at home on Saturday afternoon against fifth ranked Collingwood.

But thinking further beyond that is not what Plapp wants his side to do.

“It’s really important with footy and you hear it a lot with coaches -that you don’t get too far ahead of yourselves,” Plapp said. “We’ve been able to perform at a really good level on the weekend and we need to recover the boys well, review really thoroughly and be really clear what worked for us and what didn’t and go again.

“Teams are coming after us and we need to be ready for that.”

VWFL - DIVISION 1 LIFE in the higher climbs seems to be paying dividends for Endeavour Hills as the 2015 VWFL Division 3 minor premiers have taken on Division 1 with gusto.

Endeavour Hills saw off the best Diamond Creek had to offer in a 8.6(54) to 0.10(10) triumph on Sunday.

The wayward Creekers couldn’t muster anything on target across the afternoon, booting only 10 behinds to account for their Sunday stint at Barry Simon Reserve.

Chances flew for the hosts throughout the first term as Siona Pilkington proved a potent target up forward.

The run-and-carry that guided the Falcons to last year’s finals remains present in 2016, especially through the talented Wallace sisters - Sarah and Jess.

Their efforts, alongside midfield cadre Ash Ladson, Elizabeth Whitfield and Cass Pittard, pushed Endeavour Hills well ahead at the first break.

After a stop-start time of things through the middle phase of the clash, Endeavour Hills sealed the deal with three last term goals to boot in the 44-point triumph; its best yet of the new season.

Evans drops bomb

By DAVID NAGEL BEACONSFIELD premiership coach Clint Evans has dropped the first bombshell of the South East Football Netball League season declaring he and the club will part ways at the end of 2016.

Evans, who has been in talks with club president Gary Valentine about a new deal for 2017, informed Valentine on Sunday that he won’t be extending his contract beyond the end of this year.

Evans said it was time for both parties to move forward.

“That’s it in a nutshell,” Evans said.

“I’ve had a great time at Beaconsfield, I think we’ve both been good for each other, but it’s time for the club to move on and bring a fresh face into the fold. I still love coaching and I’ll give 100 per cent to everything I do from now until the end of the season and try and leave the list in the best shape possible.”

The Eagles currently sit fourth on the SEFNL table, with a 5-2 record, level with second-placed Narre Warren.

Evans began his coaching career in 2007 with Lang Lang in the Ellinbank and District Football League. He led the Tigers for four years, with the highlight being a grand final appearance in 2008.

He coached Hampton Park to an elimination final in 2011 before becoming an assistant-coach to Austinn Jones at Beaconsfield in 2012. He took over the senior coaching role in 2013.

Evans has not missed finals in his three years at the club and tasted the ultimate glory in 2014, defeating Cranbourne by nine goals in the last ever Casey Cardinia league grand final.

Evans, a two-time premiership player with the Eagles, has the full support of the senior playing group for the remainder of the season.

By RUSSELL BENNETT JUST hours before the Big Freeze at the MCG on Monday, one local business will be holding its own ‘Little Freeze’.

Former St Kilda star and Narre Warren and Beaconsfield coach Aussie Jones runs P3 Sports and Recovery in Berwick alongside great mate and two-time premiership winning coach with Cora Lynn, Travis Marsham.

On Monday, the pair will hold the ‘Little Freeze’ in honour of P3’s new swim instructor, Paula Olsson, whose husband suffers from Motor Neurone Disease.

And, after listening to Neale Daniher’s story on the radio on the way into work recently, Marsham - together with Jones - was inspired to act.

They’ll make use of the facilities already at P3 - such as its ice bath - for their own

event this Monday at 11am.

So far, Jones, local identity Frank Welburn, Gembrook MP Brad Battin, former Essendon player and St Kilda recruit Jake Carlisle, former Collingwood player and ‘Angry Dad’ star Mark Orval are all involved in the event - as well as a range of other participants. Australian fast bowler James Pattinson could also take the plunge.

Jones and Marsham are welcoming other businesses - particularly in and around Enterprise Way - to get involved.

It’s only $100 per nomination, plus a gold coin donation for anyone who wants to come along and watch. All the money will go straight to the Cure for MND Foundation.

Marsham said he hopes the Little Freeze becomes an annual event, with the aim of raising up to $5000 this year.

Southern suffer lacklustre game

By JARROD POTTER NPL VICTORIA - ROUND 13 DOWNED on the last orbit by the Galaxy, Southern United was left cruelly short of a second WNPL victory.

From the side that got consistently thumped through the early phase of the season, renewed faith and the return of two forward stars have pushed Southern into a deadly side that is threatening to pick off a few big scalps.

The win over Alamein, a narrow 3-4 loss to Heidelberg and now a 1-2 defeat at the hands of Geelong Galaxy have been in sharp contrast to its earlier autumn form.

Front liners Saphri Lines, Tiffany Eliadis and Brittany Dudley-Smith were problematic for the Galaxy defence. The trio continued punching holes in the visitors’ best efforts, but for Southern its best efforts only resulted in a solitary goal.

Eliadis (24) found herself on the end of a cross from Dudley-Smith to put the pinkand-blue brigade ahead and with plenty more opportunity before the half, it seemed like United could generate the huge upset.

The Galaxy - staring down the barrel of a huge upset - revved into high gear for the final 15 minutes.

The resolute Southern defence started to crumble - despite the best efforts of Freya Crocker in goals. Caitlin Pickett (82’) was given too much room at the back gave the Galaxy its first in the dying minutes before a frantic goal-line scramble from a corner allowed Olivia Ortiz (90’) to slot the matchwinner.

It leaves a bittersweet feeling lingering for the side, who can claim great improvement over its lacklustre early form, but a bad loss, no matter what the circumstances, always remains difficult to comprehend.

Captain Glenn Costas showed why he was given that mantle. In horrendous conditions he was first under every pack and alongside Anthony Brannan (three goals) and Corey Ely, the midfield started to drag St John’s across the line.

“It was a great game of footy with plenty of emotion and backwards and forwards with contested ball,” McGee said.

“They had our measure for probably two and a half quarters in regard to that battle of contested ball and at three-quarter-time we had to look at that and assess it and improve on it and that’s what we did.”

After the Queen’s Birthday bye, St John’s will host Yarra Valley OB.

Basically playing to try and improve a bunch of girls who weren’t at the same level as the rest of them in this league and now we’re feeling hard done by for ourselves for not getting something out of a game against two teams in the top three.

“We’re feeling really hard done by that we could’ve done better. We’re not at that level yet, we’ve done well, but defensively we need to do a lot better.”

Life in WNPL doesn’t get any easier for Southern this weekend as it heads off to face second ranked Calder United on Saturday.

The local derby - Berwick City versus Casey Comets - was emphatically won by the

Comets 3-0 off the boots of Katherine Crow, Jovana Mitrovic and Jessica Mcauslan.

Casey Panthers was the other local winner, with a 2-0 triumph over Kingston City.

In men’s results, Dandenong City went away and came home with a 4-2 win over St Albans - on the back of goals to Gonzalo Freddi (17’), Luke Burgess (55’) and new recruits Amir Osmancevic (78’) and Josh Frame (90+3’).

Berwick City conceded five at the back to Langwarrin in a 2-5 defeat, Casey Comets succumbed 0-3 to South Springvale, Doveton SC fell 1-2 to Doncaster Rovers, Casey Panthers were thumped 0-8 by Dandenong Warriors while Hampton Park United bucked the trend to take a 2-0 victory over Lyndale United.

Narre continue to dominate all opposition

By DAVID NAGEL BEACONSFIELD, Doveton and ROC gained significant momentum in Round 8 of SEFNL netball on Saturday while Narre Warren continued its absolute dominance over all opposition.

Beacy once again had to work hard to overcome a quality opponent, this time toppling Hampton Park in a 49-38 victory at Holm Park Reserve.

The Eagles continue to lift the bar when confronted with a challenge, from Doveton (41-31) in round four, to Tooradin (40-33) last week, to this win against the Redbacks, the Eagles are showing they are most consistent of Narre Warren’s potential premiership challengers.

But Beacy stole the march early and continued to build their lead narrowly throughout a chilly and drizzling after-

noon.

They scored 16 goals to 10 in the first quarter, the experience of Bianca Sanzaro (GS) and Andi Dickson (GA) shining through at the attacking end of the court, taking full advantage of the great work of Kaela Hughes (C), Mel Davies (WA) and youngster Zoe Mason (WD).

Kim Coulson, Karli Foster, Monalisa Groom and Birgitta Nemaric battled hard for the full four-quarters for the Redbacks.

A young and enthusiastic ROC has stolen the spotlight from Berwick 150-gamer Sarah McDermott, riding a fast start to a 54-32 victory at Starling Road.

Lauren Hargreaves (GS) and Samantha Neil (GA) really capitalised on some great pressure through the midcourt in the first term, where Ash Barnett (C), Jaz Cross (WA) and Sophie

Tracey (WD) caused constant turnovers from their Berwick counterparts.

The young Joeys led 13 to 3 at quarter time and never looked like relinquishing that advantage.

McDermott (WA) was typically determined for the Wickers.

Doveton wasted little time in asserting its authority over Tooradin, riding a crushing first half to a 58-27 triumph at Westernport.

The Doves were all over the Seagulls early, with Aila Pera dominating the midcourt, Cara Humbert (GK) in complete control in defence, while Shae Gee (GS) and Samantha Kappl (GA) proved an unstoppable force under the ring.

The Doves stretched a 10-goal lead to 21 by half time before meeting some sterner resistance in the second half.

Shona Wells (C) led the third-quarter revival from the home side, while Eb-

ony Dolan (GD) and Alex Duff (GA) also lifted their games.

The Seagulls have fallen outside the top five for the first time this season.

Narre Warren has opened up with almost the perfect quarter of netball on its way to a 57-23 demolition of Pakenham at Kalora Park.

That famous intense pressure that has brought down all teams this season was clear for all to see as the Magpies raced out to a 19-1 lead at quarter time. Chloe Phillips (GS) scored a game-high 35 goals for the Magpies, who had Rebecca Potalej, Erin Clark and Leigh Taylor take total control of the midcourt. Lions’ goaler Michelle Briggs was moved to goal-keeper after quarter time to keep the Magpies under wraps. Cranbourne had the bye.

There will be no SEFNL netball this Saturday due to the Queen’s Birthday weekend.

Season in tatters for lacklustre Lions

By DAVID NAGEL WHEN the term “mathematically possible’ comes into the finals equation then you know you’re in some trouble, and that’s Pakenham’s predicament after being blown away by 59 points by Narre Warren at Kalora Park.

Beaconsfield had to dig deep to squash a brave Hampton Park effort winning by 33 points at a slippery and greasy Robert Booth Reserve.

There was only six points in it at three quarter time but the Eagles simplified things and found a way home.

“Once we adapted and turned it into a game of yardage we seemed to get on top,” said Eagles’ coach Clint Evans.

Beau Dowler kicked four and Scott Meyer three, while Jayden Gee was typically tough in the clinches through the midfield. Blake Rout slotted three and Jordan Derbyshire was at his consistent best for the improving Redbacks.

By EWAN KENNEDY JAGUAR XF is an upmarket medium to large sedan/ saloon that has a sporting flair in all models thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not always the norm in its market segment.

While not an out-and-out performer in the manner of the SVR (nee R-Sport) range, the standard XF definitely sits to the sporting side in the eternal sports/ handling compromise.

Drivers love it for that and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve just spent a most enjoyable week behind the wheel of an iconic British machine.

The newly launched Jaguar XF has a strong visual resemblance to the model it has superseded, which makes a lot of sense as the latest Jaguar theme has gained a lot of praise.

The distinctive new-generation Jaguar grille is almost upright and flanks large headlights with big foglight grilles beneath them.

The Jaguarâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s profile is long, low and sleek and finishes off with a fastback rear end.

Jaguar XF has two infotainment systems. The standard one is InControl Touch and uses an 8.0-inch touchscreen. It supports gestures as used on smartphones and tablet computers to let you swipe and drag your way around the system.

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also voice recognition control which reduces the amount of potentially dangerous driver distractions.

Jaguar's InControl Touch Pro, as fitted to our test car, had a 10.2-inch touchscreen.

The home screen can be customised, wallpaper can be set to any image, and widgets can be added to provide shortcuts.

It also supports the latest generation of Jaguarâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Dual View technology and has a 100 per cent increase in screen pixel count over the previous model.

The quality of the audio output from the optional 17-speaker, 825Watt digital surround sound system developed by Meridian in conjunction with Jaguar is very impressive.

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a solid range of engines on offer; four-cylinder 177 kilowatt turbo-petrol and a 132 kW turbodiesel engines, both with capacities of 2.0 litres.

Then thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a trio of 3.0-litre V6 engines, two supercharged petrol, the other a turbo-diesel.

Outputs are 250 kW or 280 kW in the petrol and 221 kW from the diesel.

Powered by a highly tuned version of the Mini 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine, the JCW unit produces 170kW of power between 5200 and 6000 revs, and 320Nm of torque that’s on tap all the way from 1250 to 4800rpm.

Sitting beside the engine is a six-speed sports automatic transmission that can be overridden by paddle shifters.

A six-speed manual is available. As a sign of the times the manual is optional, at no extra charge.

With the automatic transmission the Mini Convertible’s zero to 100km/h time is 6.5 seconds.

On track or in the Northern Territory it can be pushed out to a top speed of 240km/h.

Dynamic Damper Control and an electronic differential lock (EDL) help tame the Mini’s engine.

Naturally, there’s sports-tuned JCW suspension. The driver can chose Comfort, or optimise the system in several ways for sporty driving.

Taking away the roof of any monocoque car means it has to have underbody bracing which adds weight, albeit in the right place, that is low down.

So the JCW convertible will be a little slower in acceleration but gain a fraction in handling.

Only track time by a professional driver will work out the finest details.

A fully-retractable soft-top technically makes this the first Mini convertible - the previous generations have been cabriolets, that is some portion of the roof remains in place with the top open.

Fully integrated rollover protection is a major part of the safety system.

The convertible roof is operated by a toggle switch that takes it from closed to fully open in 18 seconds. Even better, the roof can be opened or closed at speeds of up to 30km/h.

But wait … there’s more. If you don’t want a fully open car, the Mini’s roof also has a sliding function making it a sort of sunroof.

It opens to 400mm and can be operated at any speed.

Mini calls this a four-seat convertible and the new model has 36mm more rear shoulder room than the outgoing cabriolet.

There’s 112mm more rear elbow room and 36mm added knee room.

We’ve yet to drive a new Mini Convertible so can’t comment on whether we feel it’s a four-seater or really a two-plus-two.

The latest open-top Mini has 45 litres more luggage capacity than the old.

Infotainment is by way of a 12-speaker Harman/Kardon Hi-Fi; DAB radio; Mini Navigation System Professional, including 8.8-inch screen, 3D maps, touchpad controller, voice recognition and a 20 GB hard drive.

Mini JCW Convertible has sports seats trimmed in carbon black ‘cloth/dinamica' upholstery.

There are JCW-specific door sills, gearlever, instrumentation and stainless steel sports pedals.

It comes as no surprise that the tradition of personalisation is very much alive and well in the new JCW. One of our favourites is a Mini Yours soft-top with embroidered Union Jack-look finish.

This can be complemented with a huge range of interior and exterior customising items.

Priced from $54,900 plus on-road charges, the all-new Mini JCW Convertible will be available from dealers early in June.
