$80k street artists UP TO $80,000 in rate-payer money will be spent on two art works for Main Street in Pakenham. Council hopes it will bring new life to the town centre, but others think it’s a waste of money. However, Sandra Patten from Pakenham Showcase Jewellers has resigned to the fact that the art installation will happen, and wants traders to get on board with the idea. “It’s going to be spent on us whether we like it or not, so let’s give some options,” she said. Frustrated with the lack of community input into the proposal, Ms Patten took to the street to gauge the feel - and pick up some suggestions - for the art installation. “I get negative reactions like, "Why are we spending $80, 000 on art in Main Street when it could be better spent fixing footpaths?”. But it’s been delegated to us,” she said. Council’s cultural development officer Jadah Pleiter said Central Ward councillors were tasked with finding the best spot for the art - and Main Street was deemed a clear front runner as it was most “in need of public art and deserving of investment of public art.”
She said the community were given over a month to make submissions - and the majority had been positive. “The community were contacted through social media, email, flyers, phone and face to face opportunities. To date, feedback has been very positive and many traders are excited to see the project take shape and are interested to be involved in the process,” Ms Pleiter said. Ms Patten’s suggestions to date include a racehorse to touch on Pakenham’s strong racing history, a replica of the well-known Federation Oak tree in Main Street, or a cow to represent the region’s dairy industry. While the designs are still up in the air, the artists tasked with creating the $80,000 rate payer-funded works have been whittled down to three. The three artists Julie Squires, David Hislop and Col Henry in the running are not from Cardinia Shire. Council, however, said they had no expressions of interest from residents. The works are due to be installed between the John Street and Station Street roundabout sometime next year. Submissions closed on Sunday 29 May.

Race tribute By DAVID NAGEL THE Pakenham Racing Club paid tribute to its long-standing committeeman Ron Carroll at Sunday’s Foundation Member’s Raceday at Racing.com Park. Carroll’s significant contribution to the PRC committee and the Victorian racing industry were recognised with the naming of race five, The Ron Carroll Handicap. Carroll became involved with the Pakenham Racing Club when he arrived in Pakenham in 1962 as a consequence of his teaching profession. He immediately joined the club as a member and was appointed to
the Committee of the Pakenham Racing Club in 1989. He retired in September 2015, shortly after the successful opening of the new Pakenham Racecourse, and was awarded Life Membership of the club in 2013, in recognition of his outstanding service to the club. As Chairman of the club’s Racing Operations Sub Committee, he has been actively involved in the development of the club’s successful racing program, and in the management of the club’s Community Support programs offering financial assistance to numerous community organisations.
Carroll was a member of the Steering Committee initiating the establishment of the Cardinia Club which has resulted in securing the financial future of the club. He was a passionate supporter and advocate for the relocation of the racecourse and he was an integral part of the Committee that finally delivered the new racecourse in 2015. He is a past president of the Pakenham Picnic Racing Club, the Pakenham Hall and Recreation Committee, and the West Gippsland Tennis Association. He is also a life member of the Pakenham Tennis Club.

Amazing save for ‘soul’ survivor By CASEY NEILL MADDISON McNamara is still in the running to win The Voice - but only just. The Officer resident performed in a ‘battle’ against fellow Team Madden contestant Nazzereene Taleb on the Channel 9 talent contest on Monday 30 May. The Madden Brothers elected to keep Nazzereene on their team and send Maddison home - and back to work in her dad’s Dandenong South factory - following their rendition of Stole the Show by Kygo. But judge Jessie J used her only ‘save’ to add Maddison to her team and keep her in the competition. “It was quite surreal. I wasn’t really expecting that to happen,” Maddison said. “I sort of wanted Jessie from the start anyway. I was very honoured.” She said she “could have done better” and would work on not comparing herself to the other contestants ahead of her Super Battle Round appearance, airing at 7.30pm on Monday 6 June. “You’ve got four contestants up against each other,” she said. “It’s hard because you’re all striving for the one thing and you all want to get in. “It plays with your mind. “You have to stay strong and do what you’re there to do.” Maddison has grown her social media following and received messages of support since her emotion-packed rendition of Gone by Lianne La Havas in her blind audition on Sunday 1 May grabbed the at-

She took to the stage with the Madden brothers, Jessie J, Delta Goodrem and Ronan Keating sitting in large red chairs with their backs to her. “At the start I was just freaking out because it was halfway through my audition and noone’s turned yet,” she said. The Madden brothers were the first to turn around after she sufficiently wowed them with her soulful vocals, and the other judges followed suit. She then had to choose which team to join and went with the Maddens. The 21-year-old has worked

It pays the bills but she hopes The Voice will provide her with the exposure she needs to turn her passion into a career. “I’ve just been performing my whole life, since the age of five,” she said. She spoke about her dreams of stardom after recent talent quest wins, starting to perform with bands and writing songs.

Three on the run, one done By ANEEKA SIMONIS THREE offenders are on the run and one has been arrested following an alleged aggravated burglary in Pakenham leading to the emergency lockdown of three schools. Students and teachers at River Gum Primary School, Hampton Park Primary School and Hampton Park Secondary College were kept from exiting
school grounds, about noon on Tuesday 31 May, as police attempted to hunt down the alleged burglars turned car thieves. Police said that about 10.30am, four offenders allegedly broke into an Ahern Road property, shocking a woman and child inside the home at the time. They are then alleged to have sto-
len a Suzuki Swift, which two of the offenders fled in while the remaining two made off in a white Ford Territory getaway car. The Suzuki vehicle was later spotted by police who pursued in to Pride Court, Hampton Park. There, one offender was arrested in nearby Andrew Court with the assistance of the canine unit.
Three offenders are still on the loose. A spokesperson from one of the Hampton Park schools put into lockdown confirmed at least one of offenders was seen running from the scene. “Police were chasing him, he was on foot,” they said. Police believe all four offenders arrived at the Ahern Road property in the
Ford Territory. Lockdowns at all three schools have been lifted. Text messages were sent out to alert the wider school communities. Anyone with information about the outstanding offenders’ whereabouts or details about the incident are urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Stolen goods recovered in police raid at factory site By ANEEKA SIMONIS A PAKENHAM factory with a violent criminal history has again been embroiled in controversy after police seized expensive proceeds of crime from the site. Cardinia Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) detectives recovered a number of stolen items from the precincts of this fac-
tory before 8.30am on Tuesday 24 May. Some of the items included a car, motorbike, and jet ski. Pakenham police Sergeant Graeme Stanley said detectives were still trying to track down the offender/s and the owner of the stolen property. The police swoop comes eight months after the industrial factory was tied up in a violent assault.

CREDIT cards were among the haul carried out by two men who smashed their way into a Pakenham house soon after dark. About 8.15pm on Wednesday 23 March, the men broke in to a Pakenham home by smashing the property’s rear glass sliding door. Police said the men took a laptop, jewellery, sunglasses and a handbag containing a purse and credit cards. The men believed to have stolen the goods were captured on surveillance cameras. Police have released the images in a bid to identify the offenders. Kambrya College’s principal team: Nalini Naidu, Michael Muscat, Keith Perry and Joanne Wastle. feedback which has been that the episode shows it the way it really is,” Mr Muscat said. “It showed how much teachers care and how complex and intense the work of teachers is and it’s great for the community to see.” In response to the 13-yearold in possession of marijuana at school who he had taken under his wing, Mr Muscat said: “It’s just a reality.” “It was the first incidence of drugs at our school in five years and we thought ‘oh great’ but it shows schools are a reflection of the community they serve and that’s a reality.” Mr Muscat, who has been head principal at the school for eight years, said the school’s growth in education standards would be highlighted most strongly in the fourth episode. Mr Muscat said CJZ Productions had researched hundreds of schools around Australia before settling on Kambrya. “According to what they say they were looking for an average suburban high school that was doing some above average work,” he said.
Kambrya was chosen for its drastic improvement in student achievement over the past six years. Mr Muscat said the school’s success had been quite remarkable. “In 2008 we were rock bottom, one of the lowest performing schools in Victoria and now we’re consistently in the top 20 highest performing schools,” he said. The school used the University of Melbourne’s Network of Schools as a template for its success. “They’ve done a lot of research into the teaching strategies that are most effective instead of wasting your time on the teaching strategies that have low impact,” Mr Muscat said. “We’re finding that it’s having really good traction in our school,” he said. Sick of the media attention, Mr Muscat is looking forward to settling down on the couch with his daughter, a former student at Kambrya, and wife who works at the school for the next episode.

Lazlo’s three brothers play for the Hawks and their mother was a generous contributor. “The family don’t deserve this. They are a wonderful family,” Mr Navarra said. The day after the crash, Mr Navarra was set to join club members and friends filling the Nagy home to cook meals and console the popular family.
Senior Endeavour Hills team players were resolved to wear black armbands at last weekend’s game and the junior team was to do the same and pay a minute’s silence to Lazlo. An Endeavour Hills Hawks Junior Football club member, close to the Nagy family, said it was hard to find the words to say to the family. The cause of the crash is being investigated by the Major Collision Investigation Unit which will prepare a report for the coroner.

TWO good-natured Casey teenagers are dead, another is fighting for life in The Alfred after an horrific twocar crash in Kallista on 24 May. On one hand they are statistics of a 2016 road toll that refuses to buckle ‘Towards Zero’. It had soared to 122 by 26 May - 17 ahead of last year. To loved ones of Kristof Kollar, 19, and his mate Lazlo Nagy, 17, the toll is unimaginably crushing. The two died at the scene after the car they were travelling in crashed when it skidded on Monbulk Road near Grant’s Picnic Ground, collided into an oncoming 4WD and rolled down an embankment in the dark. Their passenger, Aaron Goldsmith, 18, was airlifted to The Alfred hospital with critical head injuries. Out of the catastrophe, brothers of the two late teenagers posted a defiant photo, arms around each other, in front of the crash shrine. Oliver Kollar declared on Facebook that he and Isaac Nagy both grieved for their older brothers. “You and I lost a great deal. “They left here together so today my friend and for the rest of my life you are my brother.” Earlier, Oliver delivered a mighty message via a media pack at the shrine for everyone to “cherish your family”. “Don’t be too manly to say ‘I love you’.” Tributes have poured onto social media for the pair, some of them from school friends from Gleneagles Secondary Collage, Hallam Senior College and Fountain Gate Secondary College. Kristof was described as “someone I could always count on” who helped the person who wrote the tribute to blend into their first days at a new school. His employer, Pretty’s Prime Cuts, posted that he was “such a lovely, well-mannered, all-round great kid”. Lazlo was praised as “one of the funniest and most caring blokes” who’d have jokes with the teacher in automotive class. Many are willing Aaron to pull through from life support. Endeavour Hills Hawks Junior Football Club has spread wings of support around Lazlo’s family, especially his mother and club life member Louisa Nagy. Club president Steve Navarra said Lazlo, a former Hawks player and Hallam Senior College student, was a likeable, quiet boy who stayed

THANK you to former councillor Brian Oates for the opportunity to relay the true ‘facts of the matter’ about council’s rate cap variation application (Facts Of The Matter, News, 19 May). The timeframes imposed by the Essential Services Commission meant council’s community engagement had to be undertaken in a very short period prior to Christmas and the new year. We would have liked to have increased the scope of this consultation to allow more opportunities for residents to get involved. Council presented the most important information in the focus group and online forum so that residents could make an informed choice in the timeframe available. Mr Oates says council should be more efficient and comparable with its neighbours. Mr Oates should check his facts. Casey continues to be among the lowest rating councils in outer metropolitan Melbourne, we are delivering over $150 million in community infrastructure, we have an efficiency and effectiveness program underway all while serving a population two to three times the size of our neighbours. This sounds like prudent financial responsibility to me. We take community engagement pretty seriously. Despite Mr Oates’ ill-informed claims, all of Casey’s 11 councillors are out and about in Casey every day working on behalf of and consulting with residents. THE statistics provided by the ratepayer association (Rise On Rate, News, 26 May) seriously underestimates the Casey council rate rises. From 2000/01 Melbourne inflation rose 156 per cent while the published average council residential rates increased 319 per cent. In other words, the average rates have more than doubled the inflation rate. If there had been no average residential rate increases above CPI since 2000/01 average residential rates in 2014/15 would have been $761.31 instead of the average of $1614. The average residential rates from 1999/2000 to 2014/15 have increased an average of $43.30 above the inflation rate each and every year. The accumulation of these relatively small increases over time has doubled the average residential rate. Claiming a rate increase above the cap is only worth a cup of coffee or two conveniently ignores the grab for cash by the council has been building over many years. Excessive secrecy plagues Casey Council with 37 per cent of decisions made in secret behind closed doors. To further limit scrutiny Casey council limits public questions to just 30 words and there are other obstacles that reduce the number of questions read out in the meeting. In relation to the 17 May council meeting it was stated “they are happy to criticise Casey but not hang around and listen to all the good things being done in Casey”. If you examine the confirmed minutes of that meeting you will see that at 8.23pm the

Casey’s CEO Mike Tyler must now resign as should the Mayor, Sam Aziz. If Mike Tyler doesn’t resign Casey council must terminate his contract for incompetence. Casey has been in receipt of government grants and maintained a substantial budget surplus while the mayor, Sam Aziz, has been conducting a scare campaign about the need for Casey to cut back on basic community services and facilities due to revenue constraints arising from the minister’s rate cap policy. The judgement by the Victorian Essential Services Commission has made it clear that Casey council does not have a revenue problem - Casey had a management problem all the time. Yet the confirmed minutes record that the meeting also finished at 8.23pm which was five minutes before the secret meeting began. There was no possibility of people being able to hear what was happening in this closed meeting which, from the confirmed public minutes, has been made to vanish. The council can’t have it both ways of holding meetings so secret that they do not appear in the minutes and then criticising people for leaving before they are removed from the room. The council states this is a loss of $168 million over 10 years and capital works projects will not go ahead or be put on hold. FIVE Australian Defence Force Black Hawk helicopters were returning to base after counter-terrorism training in Melbourne when they were spotted flying low over Cranbourne on Monday morning. An ADF spokesperson said the exercise to counter potential terrorist scenarios included specialist vehicles and personnel. A JUDGE has bristled at a mere careless-driving charge against a driver who veered across the wrong side of the road and collided headon with a postie’s motorcycle. The man, who appeared in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court, had clipped the bike’s rear end on Kingston Road on 26 November. Others gave the writhing postie first aid. The accused stopped briefly, then “s*** myself and just left” without giving his contact details, the court heard. The postie was in hospital for four weeks, requiring several operations to his broken left leg. The accused later told police he had been distracted by passengers “acting like children” in the car. The judge said he was “staggered” how the accused was facing just a careless driving charge.

Shotgun found under mattress By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A NARRE WARREN North man, accused of keeping a shotgun under his mattress and being part of a car-stealing “syndicate”, has been granted bail. Jason Milledge, 22, had been on bail when police allegedly found the gun with the accused’s passport under his bedroom mattress as well as four rounds of matching cartridge ammunition during a Narre Warren North property raid on 20 May. A stolen $42,000 Commodore, two suspected-stolen V8 engines fitted into other Commodores, a small amount of ice and balaclavas were also allegedly found at the premises, a court was told on 30 May. Mr Milledge, supported by a large group of friends and family in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court, denied owning the gun - which is awaiting forensic DNA-tests. The shotgun had allegedly been used in a shooting on 17 April 2015, police informant Detective Senior Constable Andrew Walker of Casey CIU told the court. Mr Milledge had past arguments with the shooting victim but had not been charged over the shooting. Investigations of the incident were ongoing, Det Sen Const Walker said. The court was told a man named ‘Kasper’ had phoned the
informant after the raid to “put my hand up for the gun”. The man was willing to come to Narre Warren Police Station but had not yet been interviewed by police, the informant said. “I asked him for more information, times and dates. He couldn’t provide those details,” Det Sen Const Walker said. Mr Milledge was believed to be part of a “syndicate” dealing in stolen cars and parts - based on the raid’s discoveries - but investigations were ongoing, Det Sen Const Walker said. Mr Milledge’s lawyer said several people, including ‘Kasper’, had been “coming and going” in the bedroom where the gun was found. On the day of the raid, Mr Milledge was staying elsewhere. He had his property boxed up, ready to be moved to his girlfriend’s home, the defence lawyer told the court. The accused had admitted to driving the stolen Commodore two days prior to the raid, the lawyer said. Mr Milledge’s charges included being a prohibited person possessing a firearm, possessing cartridge ammunition without a licence, stealing a vehicle and committing an indictable offence on bail. He was also charged over sending “menacing and threatening” text messages to a female in March.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said Mr Milledge was the “aggressor” in the texting. Some of Mr Milledge’s communication to the victim which included a picture of a firearm - was “rude, threatening and clearly harassing”, Mr Vandersteen said. In granting bail, Mr Vandersteen noted Mr Milledge’s young age, lack of prior criminal history, his denials and partial admissions, a stable alternative address, an available job and the likely delays due to forensic testing of the gun. “If you were charged with the shooting, I doubt you would be making this (bail) application.” Mr Vandersteen said the prosecution case was strong: Mr Milledge may not have been living at the raided property at the time but he had been captured on CCTV driving there two days earlier. Mr Milledge was bailed to a Berwick address, subject to CREDIT support bail conditions, a night curfew, and not contacting prosecution witnesses. He must report to police three times a week, and inform police of any change of his mobile phone number. Mr Milledge will next appear in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 30 June.

IN a bid to get their message out about traffic congestion, the Fund our Future campaign is urging fed-up drivers from outer suburbia to take a selfie. The selfies from across the nation will be used to document people’s trip to work. Fund our Future is hoping the images of frustration, congested traffic and time wasted will speak volumes to politicians. Annoyed drivers are encouraged to take a selfie at the beginning, middle and end of their morning commutes - detailing how long the journey takes - and to share it on Facebook or Twitter using the hashtag #FundOurFutureAU. The selfie social media campaign will be used as part of Fund our Future’s inaugural national Nightmare Commute Day on Tuesday 7 June. THIS Hampton Park single mum isn’t a Miss or a Mrs, she’s a Ms and proud of it. Nathalie Nicole is off to Reno, Nevada, USA, to compete in this year’s Ms Universal International pageant. Chosen as the Australian delegate, it will be Nathalie’s first opportunity to represent Oz on the world stage. “This is Australia’s first chance ever at this title, this trip is already pageant history in the making,” Nathalie said. And if the 34-year-old takes home the glittering gold, she will be bringing the pageant down under. “There is no directorship for the Ms Universal International pageant in Australia, that’s one of the reasons why I want to get as much awareness about the pageant as possible,” she said. “If I did actually win, the 2017 Ms Universal finals would be held in Melbourne and that’s never happened before. “Just because you are not married or are divorced with children shouldn’t mean you miss out on the same opportunities that other women get.” The pageant is aimed at women over the age of 25, and Nathalie, who recently graduated with a degree in criminology, said it was a pageant with a difference. “It’s not just about how you look, it’s about donating your time whether you help out a charity or organisation or raise awareness for a particular cause,” she said adding that her chosen charity is JDRF Austra-

FOR 13 years, devoted Berwick mother Deb Bayley has campaigned for a cure for type one diabetes. Ms Bayley embarked on her fundraising efforts soon after her son Ryan was diagnosed with the illness as a two-year-old. In her latest project, she persuaded five Coles supermarkets in Casey to join the cause by offering $2 Cards for a Cure for sale. Ms Bayley has also lauded a Coalition federal election pledge for $54 million towards subsidising continuous glucose monitoring technology
for people under 21 with type one diabetes. She said she’d like the pledge extended to all type one patients. “It’s a shame because there are many adults who have type one diabetes,� she said. “It’s a live issue until we find a cure.� The technology helps avert catastrophes such as when children’s blood-sugar drops in their sleep. Such cases can lead to the child collapsing in a coma, sometimes fatally. The non-intrusive technology would replace the stress of finger-prick testing multiple times a
day - including waking children in the middle of the night - to monitor low blood-sugar levels. It’s a situation that is potentially dangerous and stressful to manage said Ryan who doesn’t currently use the technology but has an insulin pump. “It’s something I’m thinking about all the time. “The technology will be really helpful in the way we can manage our condition.� The program would help an estimated 4000 patients and save their families about $4000 on average, according to the Coalition.

Make your vote count this federal election Saturday 2 July At this year’s federal election, the way you vote for the Senate has changed and it’s important that you understand how to vote correctly. On the large white Senate ballot paper, you can choose to vote either above or below the line. If you choose to vote above the line, you now need to number at least 6 boxes. De-clutter message is clear By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS AS PETER Donnelly-Willis’s home became consumed by all sorts of ‘junk’ he didn’t want, he knew he had an issue with hoarding. But the light really came on when he realised why he had been doing it. “I’m getting control of my life again,” Mr Donnelly-Willis said. Mr Donnelly-Willis’s revelation happened during a Buried in Treasures 20-week course at EACH in Narre Warren. The group workshop helps people to de-clutter and manage their hoarding disorder - a behaviour formally recognised as a mental illness. There were a heap of issues hidden beneath the piles of unwanted items. The unresolved grief after his mother’s death, being abused and hungry as a child had all been pushed down in his memory, he said. “When Mum died I didn’t feel as strong. I was buying things like a protective wall. “I realised they were all types of things that I didn’t even like, but what Mum liked.” The disorder proved isolating for Mr Donnelly-Willis over the next 18 years. He was tripping over things on the floor, collecting shirts that weren’t his size, keeping hundreds of beer bottles, piles of books he wouldn’t read and authors he wouldn’t care about. His home was so congested he’d stand on a stool to reach a kitchen cupboard over the mounting stuff. He started collecting clean-up notices from his local council and stopped inviting guests to his cluttered home out of shame. What made matters worse for Mr DonnellyWillis was the temptation of working in an opp shop. He’d often save items from being thrown out and take them home. Thanks to the EACH group, Mr DonnellyWillis proudly said he can walk into a shop without buying things. He’s challenged his acquisition impulse, he said. The group’s co-ordinator Kim Gear said hoarders could be “stigmatised” for their behaviour but the group aimed to look at

Many felt anxious walking into a shop without buying something. The group participants find mutual support

with others. They are challenged to go in a shop armed with a cheat-sheet and be conscious of their anxiety levels. When tempted to buy an item, they run their eye over a check-list of questions such as ‘Do I already have one’ and ‘Can I afford to buy it?’. For Mr Donnelly-Willis, the result has been life-changing.
“I’m nearly ready to get visitors - there’s a bit of space opening up inside. “I’m starting to fill up my recycle bins.” The course is open to residents in Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia. Art speaks all languages By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS THE Casey Winter Arts festival kicked off on Sunday 29 May at the Lynbrook Community centre with a multicultural flare. Family event Experience Casey celebrated the many different people and cultures that live and work in the City of Casey as well as the first birthday of the new Lynbrook community centre. Residents from all over were encouraged to attend the celebrations and enjoy the many facets of cultural diversity that were on display. From performances and food stalls to art activities and short films, the Experience Casey event showcased the varied people that make up the many faces of Casey. The premier screening of four short films that showcased the many cultures of Casey ties in with the launch of the 2016 Casey Winter Arts Festival. The Winter Arts Festival will include three months of art events and activities for all residents to get involved in across the Casey area. So close for women Warriors By RUSSELL BENNETT THE Pakenham Warriors Division 2 women have come agonisingly close to recording their first ever Big V basketball win - falling just four points short of Sherbrooke on Saturday night, 53-49. As part of a triple-header of games at Pakenham’s Cardinia Life stadium that also included the Warriors youth men’s and senior men’s teams, Darren Thomas’ women’s side was right in the contest until the dying stages. The team, in its second season, is now winless through its first 10 games in this campaign and is seemingly anchored to the 10th and last spot on the Division 2 ladder - behind the ninthplaced Sherbrooke, which recorded its second win. Hayley Leknius was stellar for Pakenham on Saturday, finishing with a huge 16-point, 15-rebound double-double, while Tess Young recoded a whopping 23 rebounds. In what was hardly a game for the purists, the Warriors shot just 25 per cent from the field but that dwarfed Sherbrooke’s 17 per cent effort. The Warriors turned the ball over just 17 times for the game, but could only sink 11 of their 26 free-throw attempts in a costly conversion rate. The news was much better, however, for the Jeff Reid’s Division 2 men’s side which narrowly saw off Coburg, 58-55 in the last game
on Saturday night. The two teams have an intriguing recent history of close battles, and Saturday’s was no different as the Warriors recovered from scoring just five points in the entirety of the first quarter. They scored 21 in the last to just 12 from the Giants to clinch the win, with skipper Paul Phillips (7 points and 9 boards) and Kenneth Hall (9 points, 17 boards and 2 blocks) leading the way as a low-post tandem. Forwards Hayden Davey and Ben Gaze also scored 15 points apiece. The Warriors now sit a game clear in second on the ladder, a game clear of Mornington and just one adrift of Western Port. In the other game held on Saturday, the Warriors’ Youth League 2 men saw off Western Port in a nailbiter, 70-68. Impressively, only two Warriors players scored in double-figures in what as an outstanding all-around effort. Pakenham now sits in fourth spot on the Youth League 2 ladder, just one win behind local rivals, Casey. The Warriors’ youth men will this Saturday head to Warrnambool for a clash against the hometown side, before returning to face Casey at home on Sunday afternoon. The women’s side will head to Mornington on Saturday night, while Jeff Reid’s men will host a top-of-the-table blockbuster against Western Port this Sunday afternoon from 3pm.

THE Pakenham Silverbacks gridiron club has created history yet again, with six players - and coach Richie Howlett - involved in the first ever Victorian state women’s team. The Victorian Eagles headed to the nation’s capital recently for its first ever interstate clash to take on a Monarchs team made up of both ACT and New South Eales players. And the Vics - including Pakenham players Jessica Jhajj, Maree Neophyton, Matilda Vaosea, Ramona Havili, Yana Mazel, and Samantha Kelly came away with the win, 38-24. Howlett, one of the Silverbacks’ co-founders, was involved in coaching the offensive line for the interstate clash. He said it marked another step forward for Victorian gridiron. “I think the best part about it was that on a club level women play for all different sorts of reasons, but by the time you get to state level everyone is playing because they’re passionate and driven and want to be the best they can be,” he said. “That makes a huge difference to the mentality of the team. “It was good that we had six of our players in there. I think that was the third-highest representation of any club, so that made me feel great about it. “We founded the Silverbacks with the intention of making the sport available to

Lions need to get serious By DAVID NAGEL LET’S cut to the chase - Pakenham’s season goes on the line this week when the Lions make the trip to Kalora Park to take on second-placed Narre Warren. The Lions invested heavily at the start of the season, and under fourthyear coach Steve O’Bryan were expected to make a huge charge towards the top of the table. But the Lions have won just two games from six, are in seventh place on the ladder and in no-man’s land as we head into the middle stages of the season. They need to act - and act fast! The Lions will need to get to 40 or 44 points to get a run at this year’s flag. That means they need to defeat Doveton, Officer, Hampton Park, Tooradin and Beaconsfield in a run of games from rounds 11 to 15 to keep their dreams alive. But that still won’t be enough. They need to win at least one, but most possibly two, in five games against the top-three teams in the competition. Berwick and Cranbourne look tough, so if the Lions lose to the Magpies this week - stick a knife in them, they’re done. Their two-big targets up forward, Ben Fraser and Daniel Fry, were brilliant against Hampton Park last week, kicking a dozen between them, but you get the feeling they’ll need some help to kick a winning score against the Magpies. It might be left to some damaging midfielders like Luke Walker, Russell Lehman, Damien Holmes and Steve O’Bryan to chip in with a couple each to get the Lions across the line. SEFNL - ROUND 7 REVIEW BRENDAN Fevola went goalless and Berwick further cemented itself at the top of the South East Football Netball League ladder -they were the
standout features of a stellar round seven on Saturday. Cranbourne’s twin-towers of strength, Marc Holt and Brandon Osborne, stole the spotlight from Fevola in Saturday night’s blockbuster clash against Doveton at Robinson Reserve. Holt was at his belligerent best, lighting up the night sky with a magnificent first-half performance, kicking four of his five goals for the evening, while Osborne was typically frugal, keeping Fevola goalless in the Eagles’ comprehensive 46-point victory. Fevola more than paid his way for the Doves, his cameo appearance attracting a huge crowd through the gate, but went penniless where it mattered most -in the goal square. The Eagles kicked eight unanswered goals to lock away the four points by midway through the third term. The Eagles had many winners on the night, with midfielders Max Gearon and Shaun Marusic handling the greasy conditions with ease, while Aaron Bower and Dylan Cavalot caused plenty of havoc with their run. The hiatus of Berwick forward Mitch Johnson is over after kicking seven goals in the Wickers’ 39 point victory over Narre Warren at Edwin Flack Reserve. Johnson’s return, after three games in the reserves, gave the Wickers the edge in the battle between the top-two teams in the competition. Berwick led by 19 points at half time and kicked 7.12 to 5.4 after the break to race away with victory. Darren Sheen kicked four for the Magpies. Former AFL stars Beau Dowler (7 goals) and Daniel Giansiracusa (6 goals) had their kicking boots on in Beaconsfield’s 99-point thumping of Tooradin, while Pakenham Fraser and Fry kicked six each in Pakenham’s 92-point romp over Hampton Park. It's a matter of self-belief By DAVID NAGEL COACHES have so much control over their team’s destiny, but instilling belief - well that can only come from winning games of netball as a unit. Beaconsfield’s A Grade team built a hell of a lot of belief with its 40-33 victory over Tooradin on Saturday. The Eagles beat a quality team, at full strength, to emerge as the biggest threats to Narre Warren’s firm grip on the premiership cup. Beaconsfield coach Simon O’Shanassy thinks this could be the game where the penny really did drop for his side. “Sometimes you look back at the end of a season and you remember a game that was a turning point, and I think this will be it for us,” O’Shanassy said. “The girls are really starting to believe in each other, believe that they’re good enough, and I think there’s some hunger and anticipation, some excitement for the year ahead. There was a real feeling that they had achieved something for each other on the weekend.” The Eagles started well, building a five-goal lead at
quarter time, and were never headed, with some of their star players shining on the big stage. O’Shanassy was particularly impressed with a defender, a goaler, and a youngster on the rise. “Dani Cameron (GK) has been playing out of her skin lately,” he said. “In football terms she gets the best full-forward every week, and she keeps on getting better week in, week out. Mix and Maxx for sedan By DEREK OGDEN IN A world where connectivity is king and social media, like a hatchback, can lay bare through the ‘rear window’ even the most personal information, there are people, usually older, who prefer to hang on to their privacy. In automotive terms the latter are the sedan folk who like to lock away possessions out of sight in a car boot. Mazda has tipped its cap to them by introducing a sedan version of its popular Mazda2, leaving the hatch to attract the younger, more connected, buyer. Available in Neo and Maxx specification - the high-end Genki has been let go - sedan prices start with an entry level of $14,990 for the Neo manual. Neo and Maxx hatchback share their prices with the sedan, while the added Genki tops out the range at $20,690. The mid-spec Mazda2 Maxx hatchback was on test. There’s no disguising the Mazdaness of the ‘2’, with the front taking on the brand DNA. Designers created a dynamic profile by pushing the compact cabin toward the rear of the lower body’s forward sloping lines. The overall effect of this body design is that of forward momentum, while wheels positioned as close as possible to the four corners of the body create a short overhang and achieve a wide track
The Mazda2 hatch carries design cues found across the complete range of Mazda vehicles. The passenger cabin takes on high ideals with cues taken from small aircraft. The instrument panel spreads like the wings of a plane; the round airconditioning louvres resemble jet engines; the radiating lines of the door trim convey the image of air flowing from a jet engine. The intention is to create a feeling of quality that goes beyond the modest class of the car. The driver-centric cockpit environment and classy colour co-ordinated surroundings work well. Next-generation HMI (Human Ma-
chine Interface) with Commander control knob on the centre console, allows easy access to navigation, communications and infotainment, including social media via MZD Connect. A number of functions can be controlled by voice activation, including switching menus, audio play, stop and skip functions, station selection, as well as zooming in and out of the navigation system maps. With a mobile music player or smartphone connected to the onboard head unit via USB, voice commands can also be used to search for songs by

Of two engines available to the Mazda2, the Maxx takes the uprated 1.5-litre Skyactiv-G four-cylinder producing 81 kW of power and 141 Nm of torque, it’s coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission. The latter allows drivers to press a switch on the shift gate to switch to the Sport drive mode, where the transmission is automatically set to start out in a low gear. It also increases the amount of torque output when the accelerator
pedal is pressed down further to deliver increased acceleration and a sense of fast response with a minimum of pedal action. Central to this is the delivery of a good field of vision from the driver’s seat, plus the placement of new Human Machine Interface devices to minimise movement of the driver’s line of sight, as well as the adoption of Mazda’s iActivsense advanced safety technologies. Available across the Mazda2 range is the Smart City Brake Support option, which, when driving at low speeds (4 to 30 km/h) around town, the system automatically applies the brakes to prevent colliding with the vehicle ahead, or reduce the amount of damage in the event an accident cannot be avoided. A strong body structure and a full suite of airbags takes care of the passive safety of occupants. There’s good space in the Mazda2 Maxx cabin, with ample head and shoulder room for the average-size occupants in front, while rear leg room is adequate. Rear seatbacks fold to increase cargo carrying capacity from 250 litres. And with just one side of the 60:40 division dropped will take a golf bag or similar long load.
