Albury Wodonga’s largest circulating newspaper
Words of wisdom near the end THE Country Women’s Association, Palliative Care Australia and Health Minister Sussan Ley launched a new campaign ‘Dying to Talk Discussion Starter’ last week in Albury to encourage Australians to talk about how they would like to be cared for near the end of their life FULL DETAILS, PAGE 4
Super support of milk By MONIQUE KUZEFF TALLANGATTA’S local Ciccone’s IGA has thrown its support behind local dairy farmers by discontinuing the supply of homebrand milk and solely stocking Kiewa Milk. This decision came last week after Tallangatta’s IGA owners Vince and Tina Ciccone heard comments by communities on social media saying they wanted to in some way support the local dairy farmers. “Not only are we able to help our local dairy farmers by only selling their milk, but we’re giving the community a chance to support them too,” Mr Ciccone said. When Vince and Tina heard about the financial strife dairy farmers faced with price cuts to their milk by major processors Murray Goulburn and Fonterra, they were motivated to make the change in their supermarket. “We are in dairy country and dairy farmers are very supportive of the business, so I thought about what we could do to give back to these guys,” he said. “We want them to be around for generations to come and that’s why we did it because we are a community and we support one another.” Mr Ciccone said responses from
Tallangatta locals had been great and that he would continue to stock Kiewa Milk for as long as the community continued to support it. “If we get strong public support behind it, we won’t buy and stock homebrand milk anymore. “So far the response has been great, and I’ve had people come up to me and congratulate me on what we’re doing.” Mr Ciccone encouraged customers and other businesses alike to get on board and support the local dairy farmers in the region. “These guys need our help and if they’re to be supported we need to buy local products because our dairy farmers are important and so is their industry,” he said. “They need to stay in business to feed their families because at the end of the day its also their bread and butter and if they don’t get enough backing, they’ll have to sell up and go.” While Tallangatta IGA still stocks other homebrand dairy products including cheese, cream, butter and margarine, Mr Ciccone urged retailers and customers to buy the local dairy products supplied to further support local dairy farmers.
Ciccone’s IGA Tallangatta now only stocks Kiewa Milk to support the local dairy farmers. 154935 Picture: CONTRIBUTED

Mercy well marked By MONIQUE KUZEFF ALMOST 60 men and women put aside some time each week to offer their friendship, support and practical help to Mercy Health Albury patients who are living with a chronic or terminal illness. That is why Mercy Health organised an event during National Palliative Care Week to celebrate those volunteers and acknowledge a few of them for their service of five and 10 years. Palliative volunteers Pam McFarland and Merril Sproule received a certificate to acknowledge 10 years of voluntary service with Mercy Health. In 2006, Ms McFarland decided to become a volunteer in palliative care after she entered retirement. With a background in child care and nursing she felt she wanted to continue giving back to the community. “I enjoy giving back to people,” Ms McFarland said. “Sometimes people need someone like a volunteer who they can confide in and talk to other than family. “If I can make someone’s day a little better I’ll do it! I get back more than I give and all the staff here are fantastic.” Over the years, Ms McFarland

families as it allows them to know their loved ones are being cared for.” The teamwork and relationships developed over the years is the reason why Ms McFarland continues to work as a volunteer at the hospital. “I see the great work the staff here are doing and if I can help in a small way I will,” she said. “I’ve made wonderful friendships with other volunteers and friends with the staff and that just keeps me coming back.”
Nursing unit manager Linda Todhunter said palliative care volunteers were “absolutely invaluable” to Mercy Health. “They are all pretty amazing and I am very privileged to be able to work with them,” Ms Todhunter said. “They work in an area that not a lot of people feel comfortable working in and they are deep, thoughtful, emotional and supportive people.”
Concessional loans for crisis-ridden dairy farmers By MONIQUE KUZEFF NORTH East dairy farmers are somewhat relieved with a $579 million support package delivered by the Coalition Government in recognition of the recent crisis they faced with retrospective price cuts to milk by major dairy processors MurrayGoulburn and New Zealand’s Fonterra. The care package, announced last week by Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce, encompassed $555 million for concessional loans with $55 million directly available, as well as $900,000 for rural financial counselling services to help dairy farmers make business decisions based on available and accurate information. The concessional loans would be funded by expansion of the drought concessional loan scheme to include dairy-specific criteria. Dairy farmers are able to apply for loans of up to $1 million with an interest rate of 2.66 per cent from 1 August. With some 30 Murray Goulburn and Fonterra providers in the Farrer electorate, Farrer MP Sussan Ley was pleased with the support package announcement, saying it would give dairy farmers some “security”

but called for banks to “step up”. “If you move to a Commonwealth Government concessional loan, I don’t want to see any banks charging (farmers) to do that,” Ms Ley said.

THE Border North East Nappy Collective has received a generous donation of 20,000 nappies from Mater Nappies in addition to the 3652 nappies contributed by Wangaratta and Border locals. Mater Nappies gave the nation-wide Nappy Collective 300,000 nappies that are to be distributed to community-based support agencies including women’s refuges and health services across the country. These agencies would then deliver the nappies to women escaping domestic violence, experiencing a crisis or in financial hardship. Border North East Nappy Collective regional manager Sophie Richards said the donation was “overwhelming” and was thankful for local donations as well. “A huge thank you goes out to the people who have made a donation to our drop points in Wodonga, Albury, Wangaratta and Lavington,” Ms Richards said. “We’ve received enough donations to go out to refuge groups and groups supporting families in crisis or who might be suffering financial hardship. “Nappies are quite an expensive commodity and we are able to provide women with them so they can buy food and pay bills.” The nappies are stored at the Albury Wodonga Reginal Foodshare warehouse and are to be sorted by size, Ms Richards said. “We have a small groups of volunteers who work together to sort out the nappies into their correct sizes and then we box them up and label them to be sent off to our beneficiaries,” she said. “We don’t want people to have to be in a situation where they’re unable to provide their baby or toddler with nappies. “It would be a really terrible circumstance to find yourself in, so to have this available to aid vulnerable women is a pretty good contribution to make.” Those interested in donating can drop nappies off at points at Warby Street Veterinary Hospital (Wangarrata), Target (Wodonga), Wodonga Library, Albury Library Museum, Lifeline (Wodonga), Salts of the Earth (Albury) and Lavington Library in October. Ms Richards encouraged anyone who would like to volunteer for the Border North East Nappy Collective to contact her at www.thenappycollective.com.

experienced difficulty with the processing of concessional loans due to strict criteria, Indi MP Cathy McGowan said. While she welcomed the support package, Ms McGowan said she would be paying close attention to ensure that dairy farming families could access the loans. “While concessional loans are helpful, they have been problematic in the past,” Ms McGowan said. “The immediate assistance will help farmers get through these tough times, including quicker access to social service payments, business advice and financial counselling.” Ms McGowan urged dairy businesses needing financial assistance to contact Goulburn Murray Hume AgCare on 1300 834 775 or visit the Wodonga office at 2/109 Hume Street. The support package also included funding to fast track the upgrade of the Macalister Irrigation District ($20 million) and establish a commodity milk price index ($2 million), as well as $900,000 for Dairy Australia’s ‘Tactics for Tight Times’ program to ensure dairy farmers understand factors influencing their position and gives them access to resources, tactics and support.

Quilty stands for liberty and choice By MONIQUE KUZEFF WODONGA resident Tim Quilty was announced on Friday as the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) candidate for the seat of Indi - making it the first time a Liberal Democrats member has stood for the seat. As both a farmer and an accountant Mr Quilty believes the key to a prosperous Australia is freeing the economy from government restrictions and taxes, and believes his career attributes are valuable to the electorate of Indi. “Indi is a rural electorate and I think someone needs a farming background to be able to represent it well, Mr Quilty said. “I grew up on a farm and spent 10 years running it with my parents. “As an accountant I also have a lot of knowledge about tax. My party wants the tax-free threshold to be lifted to $40,000 and to cut tax rates to a flat 20 per cent. Having taken a keen interest in politics in his earlier life, Mr Quilty was young when he initially became a member of the Liberal Party before discovering the Liberals did not represent his values. He then came across the LDP in 2002 and officially became a member in 2003. He liked the LDP because it stood for lower taxes and small government believing people should make their own choices and not be restricted by government. This is a message Mr Quilty would be bringing to Indi, allowing people to keep more of their own money through lower taxes, and to spend and invest as they see fit. LDP promotes free markets, freedom of choice, civil liberties, decentralised government and constitutional liberal democracy and according Mr Quilty the party “believes in the things the Liberals pretend to believe in. Leading up to the 2 July election, Mr Quilty said he would be spending a lot of time campaigning across his electorate. “I’m looking forward to getting out and meeting the people, he said. “I’ll also be putting up posters and trying to establish a local Liberal Democratic branch as we have a few members scattered around the area so I’d like us to get together and pursue liberty. Mr Quilty said he would be focusing on taxa-

EDUCATION will now be an even bigger focus at Murray Art Museum Albury (MAMA) after the Coalition Government invested a further $300,000 to support the learning space and secure the naming rights. Federal Member for Farrer Sussan Ley announced on Wednesday morning the Commonwealth Government Growth Centre Education Suite as the official name of the education hub at MAMA. Ms Ley said the education suite would provide students with access to art and learning facilities through three flexible learning spaces, a meeting room and two wet-spaces for studio work. “The $300,000 in Com-
monwealth funding on top of our substantial contribution to MAMA is adding to what the art museum delivers to every single person on the Border, Ms Ley said. “It will underline the commitment to creative arts, but most importantly to education. “It’s so much more than a gallery and an exhibition space; it’s also about education and engaging young people and school students. The funding comes as an addition to the Coalition Government’s $3.5 million contribution to help redevelop MAMA’s arts and learning facilities. The education suite has been strategically beautified with design features such as ceiling load bearing suspension
and magnetic walls to enhance the learning space for young people. Ms Ley said she was pleased to know that toddlers to teenagers would be able to get more involved in creative arts through the new education suite. “I’m delighted to see little tots in here, starting to understand creativity and I also learnt that we have Indigenous students and Certificate 3 classes from TAFE being delivered. “This if very much for the community of Albury and as MAMA developed and its name becomes more recognised, it is certainly something people will be attracted to. “It’s going to get very, very busy and will deliver a lot for our region.

Fashion funds future By MONIQUE KUZEFF SITUATED on the eastern border of the Democratic Republic of the Congo is Walungu, a small village subject to frequent attacks by Rwandan Hutus and rebels. With many orphans, widows and children born as a result of rape, the village’s social structure is constantly being challenged however, an education provider known as Organisation for the Development of the Socially Vulnerable (ODASOV), recognised by the UN, has worked over the years to improve the circumstance. A Border group called Murray Valley Sanctuary Refugee Group (MVSRG), who sponsors refugees to come to Australia, has supported ODASOV in their efforts to develop a training centre in which women could be taught income earning skills. So far MVSRG has donated $25,000 to the village to help the development of the education training centre through hosting luncheons, barbecues, film nights, trivia nights and other fund-raising events across the Border. MVSRG secretary Penny Vine said the group got involved with ODASOV through a Congolese man they had sponsored to come to Wodonga. “We have over 150 people from Central Africa who have settled in

this region over the past 10 years, Ms Vine said. “A Congalese man we brought here has maintained links with Walungu where he came from. “They are learning from us, but we are also learning from them. “The ODASOV look at clean water, running forums on topics such as domestic violence or HIVE and further development for those with professional backgrounds in the area. MVSRG has developed a unique exhibition 'Colour Me Beautiful’ on the theme of fashion and culture to
raise further funds for ODASOV. The exhibition is displayed at the Creators Artspace on Gateway Island near La Maison, with a $5 entry fee. The exhibition aligned the past 150 years of Australian fashion and the vibrant materials and styles of clothing from Central Africa sourced from Wangaratta archivist Rhonda Diffey. Ms Vine said there is a crosscultural influence in the styles and material of the showcased fashion that reveals the influence of other cultures.
“Both Australia and Africa have been colonies and experience input from the European fashion, she said. “Love of colour is universal and how you dress yourself is also important in most cultures. “The exhibition compliments the energy of style and colour of Australian fashion from 1920s, '50s and '60s, with intricate patterns and materials developed. The exhibition will run until 12 June and is open from 10am to 4pm on weekdays. For further information, contact Penny on 0407 268 121.
Home-based care for when the end draws near By MONIQUE KUZEFF GROWING up as a daughter of a palliative care nurse, Health Minister Sussan Ley holds the palliative care service close to her heart and would like to see the service supporting people in their homes. Country Women’s Association (CWA) and Palliative Care Australia jointly hosted an event on Wednesday as a part of National Palliative Care Week to launch the ‘Dying to Talk Discussion’. This initiative is designed to encourage people to discuss, plan and take charge of their end-of-life care. CWA members will deliver the initiative to their communities, which would support the efforts of the 20,000 members as they work towards improving life for regional, rural and remote families. Ms Ley said the discussion starter would enable people to think about their own death and have conversations about it with family members. “It will help people to both think about the things that are important to them and how they would want to be treated if they needed palliative or end-of-life care, Ms Ley said.

ing home-based palliative care a priority after the election. “As Minister for Aged Care, my priorities continue to be working towards reforms around the individual, she said. “It’s about you determining what you want as the entitlement you get from government when it comes to consumer care.
“I will work closely with my State and Territory colleagues on how we can make sure that funding delivers palliative in the community and in your own home. The Federal Government has provided up to $52 million over three years to improve palliative care services for older people and aged care. Ms Ley welcomed Labor’s bipartisan support and commitment to palliative care of $35 million over four years saying she believed palliative and aged care “should be above party politics. “Since taking responsibility for palliative care earlier this year I have been keen to learn about what people want and what services are provided. “Some states, like West Australia, provide more emphasis on services that support people at home with the result that more people are actually able to die at home. “That’s an outcome I’d like to see replicated in other states. “Keeping older Australians healthier and happier in their own homes for longer.

TODDLERS and children up to five years gathered at libraries across the Border to join in on National Simultaneous Storytime as they immersed themselves in a colourful story called ‘I Got This Hat’ by Australian authors Jol and Kate Temple. This program is a part of the Library and Information Week, and aims to promote the value of reading and literacy and encourage young children to engage in reading for both enjoyment and education. Each year a different Australian book is selected that explores age-appropriate themes and addresses criteria of the National Curriculum of Grade 1 to 6 and Early Learning Years Framework of pre-school. At Lavington Library, the story was animatedly delivered by Lavington Library’s children services program officer Amber Perry who also used prop-hats to further engage the room full of children aged three to five. Lavington Library co-ordinator Judy Kennedy said National Simultaneous Storytime was a great idea that allowed everybody to come together and engage with the same book. “It creates a lot of discussion between preschools and other libraries,” Ms Kennedy said. “We are hoping to spark the children’s interest and hope they gain enjoyment from books for the rest of their life. “This year the book talks about a hat from a different part of the world, so hopefully they’ll have fun and remember it.” Having worked at the Lavington Library for 46 years, Ms Kennedy said it was most endearing to see the different generations continued to engage with the library over the years. “It’s fantastic to see the children coming in and getting involved with the activities we hold

VOTING RULES HAVE CHANGED?
Make your vote count this federal election Saturday 2 July At this year’s federal election, the way you vote for the Senate has changed and it’s important that you understand how to vote correctly. On the large white Senate ballot paper, you can choose to vote either above or below the line. If you choose to vote above the line, you now need to number at least 6 boxes. Put the number ‘1’ in the box for the party or group that is your first choice, a ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you’ve numbered at least 6 boxes.
If you choose to vote below the line, you need to number at least 12 boxes, from 1 to 12, for individual candidates in the order of your choice. Voting for the House of Representatives has not changed. On the green ballot paper, you need to number every box, starting with the number ‘1’ for your first choice, ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you have numbered every box. ‘How to vote’ instructions will be clearly displayed on your ballot paper. Don’t worry if you make a mistake — just ask for another ballot paper.
Your vote will help shape Australia.

Scones, cakes and Geoff By MONIQUE KUZEFF WHILE scones, slices, biscuits and cakes were all a part of the Biggest Morning Tea at Riverwood on Wednesday last week, so was Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre (AWRCC) Trust Fund’s Secretary Geoff Smith who attended the event as a guest speaker. Over 100 Riverwood residents attended the annual national event that aimed to raise funds through the entry fee and donated prizes that were raffled on the day to support the Cancer Council Australia-wide. And as usual at Riverwood, residents threw their friendly support behind the fund-raiser by getting involved and donating prizes and food for the fun event. This year however, Riverwood residents agreed to donate $1500 of the takings to the AWRCC Trust Fund to support the local cancer centre. Mr Smith said he was thankful on behalf of AWRCC for the Riverwood’s generous donation as it showed the strong support of community groups of the cancer centre. “Riverwood has generously donated funds and given its support to cancer services and research in Albury,” Mr Smith said. “These kinds of donations show the commitment of community groups and the importance of the cancer centre to the region.” Mr Smith updated Riverwood residents on the stage the cancer centre was currently at, why it had been established and what the trust fund would go towards. “The AWRCC Trust Fund board takes every opportunity to talk to community groups about the fund and how they might donate and contribute to the fund,” he said. “While the original fund will only deliver the initial equipment and facilities, the trust fund was established to provide further funding for more equipment, professional development and research in to the future.”

Seniors loving every bit of it CHOOSING to live in the Wodonga Gardens Retirement Estate is described by many residents as one of the best decisions they have made. With spacious two and three bedroom independent living villas available in eight different designs and with either carport, single or double garage options, there is a layout to suit everyone. All the villas are light and spacious with large bedrooms and living areas and generously appointed kitchens. All have a fenced rear yard for privacy where residents can establish their own gardens if they wish. The villas are designed with ageing in mind and interiors are completely flat without any stairs or steps. All villas also have an emergency call system so medical help is available at the push of a button anytime. One of the best things about living at Wodonga Gardens Retirement Estate is residents have no home maintenance - it is all done for them. Estate maintenance staff tends gardens and mows lawns. They even change light globes and hang pictures - whatever is required. With home maintenance taken care of, retirees are free to spend more time enjoying themselves. With a community of like-minded people, making friends is easy. There are regular social gatherings such as morning teas, barbecues, dinners and happy hours occur regularly. Participation is entirely up to the residents and they can be involved as little or as much as they wish. Many people also look at retirement as a time to travel. Many enjoy the security of knowing that their home and gardens are being looked after while they are away. Caravanning is popular with retirees and the estate has dedicated storage areas for caravans. With great friends, a vibrant lifestyle and the security of a well run and caring community, it is no wonder that many Wodonga Gardens Retirement Estate residents say they wish they had made the decision to move in sooner. If you are interested in enjoying a happy retirement at Wodonga Gardens Retirement Estate, contact Ruth Kernaghan on 02 6059 2690.

An investment backed by study By AMANDA GARRETT IN nursing, you study and get advanced qualifications. In property, I struggled to find a course of study for investing. I am a qualified real estate agent, but that taught me how to stage and market a property, how to get a good price for the seller, how to manage a business and run a trust account, risk reduction in property management and so on. How to be a good real estate agent. However, It did not teach me about capital gains, cash flow calculations, or depreciation implications, taxation issues, rental yields, valuation implications and the list goes on. Then I found a course developed to provide accreditation standards for property investment advisors, to provide knowledge about legal and regulatory requirements of giving advice and aligned with the reforms within the financial services industry. It had all these missing elements, so I could confidently advise those I wanted to help. It was a course run by the Property Investment Professionals of Australia (PIPA) . If nothing else, whether you work with me or
not, make sure if you are getting property advice that the person is PIPA accredited. Their logo looks like this :
And so we started investing in property. We bought the first one using equity in our home. What is equity? In simple terms (in theory) it’s roughly the difference between the current value of your property minus the mortgage on this property. In reality, you can only tap into less than that. It gets complicated. If you want some honest help, or simple explanations, I invite you to call me or come along to one of my free sessions, details are on the advertisement on this page.

Weekly Real Estate Albury Wodonga’s Property Guide
Factoring in hidden costs By MONIQUE KUZEFF ARE you a new home buyer looking to build? If so, have you asked all the necessary questions to ensure you won’t be forking out additional costs after signing a contract? Over 30 years, Alatalo Bros has become one of the most trusted and reliable building companies in the Albury Wodonga and Wagga Wagga regions dealing with both the building and land developing side of property. Alatalo Bros knows that it is absolutely necessary for potential buyers to ask building and land developing experts the important questions when seeking quotes to ensure they are not paying extra costs, which could exceed a further $10,000, after signing a contract. Alatalo Bros general manager Tony Moyle said it was not the price your house started at that mattered; it was the price it ended at that mattered. “There can be some hidden traps out there that a lot of people aren’t aware of,” Mr Moyle said. “You could have a set budget and you think you’re going to meet it, and then all of a sudden you are slammed with all of these extra costs. “With Alatalo Bros, we are both the developer and builder, so we have a broad knowledge of what is required across all aspects of building not just building, but the land development side of things as well.” Mr Moyle said the cheapest quote in town was not always going to fit a home buyer's budget as there were a lot of other things that needed consideration.
The friendly and knowledgeable staff at Alatalo Bros will help guide you towards your dream home. 136540 “People shouldn’t just be looking to buy a house because of their budget, they also need to know what’s being included.
“People need to be aware of what is included to make their blocks more practical, and need to ask their builder what is included in the site costs,
otherwise they’ve got to do a lot more work after the house has been built, which might cost them $10,000 to $20,000 extra.” Alatalo Bros sales manager Michelle Brown said it was about asking clients the right questions to ensure that once the land was developed and the house was built it was going to be practical, functional and resalable. “We try to understand what the client needs for the future are once the house is built,” Ms Brown said. “If a block of land has a bit of a fall, you’re probably going to need a retaining wall. “Whether they are going to have a pool or shed, or if they need access to the back of the block, our site cost will allow them to have a usable block at the end of the day. Other aspects that Alatalo Bros consider for building is the orientation of the house so that the client can minimise electrical heating and cooling requirement and also future property prospects to design a house that can be resold if wanted by the home buyer. Alatalo Bros encourage home buyers to go out and ask the necessary questions when seeking a quote. Some of these include: Will we have fixed site costs before signing our contract? What else is required to be added to the base price to finish my home, for example air-conditioner, flyscreens, security doors or bathroom accessories? Victoria at its best
Enzo Raimondo
VICTORIA looks its best in autumn. The trees are golden, winter’s bare branches have yet to appear and mild and sunny days give way to crisp mornings. However, some vendors planning to sell their home can be wary of doing so now, assuming that the cooler weather may affect their efforts to market and sell a property. While spring, with gardens in flower, has much to offer there are also many more homes on the market at that time. And that’s where autumn comes into its own, with agents reporting a shortage of stock to show buyers in many areas. For those who are putting their home on the market, it’s important to take advantage of all that the season has to offer - changing colours in the garden, floral fragrances to greet buyers both inside and outside your home, and plants neatly pruned without the fear of damage from an unexpectedly hot day. Bring the warmth of an autumn colour scheme inside your home, with flower and leaf arrangements and throws and cushions reflecting your garden colours, giving your home a cosy and welcoming feel. In the kitchen too, a display on a table or benchtop can reflect these colours and the bounty of the season - colourful seasonal fruit, for example. But don’t get carried away - it’s about creating a feeling, not overwhelming the potential buyer with too many flowers, candles and competing fragrances. For evening inspections light a

Close to hospital and shopping THIS two-bedroom unit has a Tudor-style look with exposed timber beams, a vaulted ceiling, and slate floor. Both bedrooms have built-in robes and the main has an ensuite. The split-level living area includes a gas wall furnace and refrigerated air-conditioner. The central kitchen includes a dishwasher, gas cooktop and wall oven. A second shower and toilet are included in the laundry, which also has internal access from the garage. A second carspace is also included, and both the front and backyards are securely-fenced. As the front unit of only two on the block, it is located near the Albury Hospital, Newmarket Hotel, IGA Supermarket, shops, Alexandra Park and Lauren Jackson Sports Centre.

fire if you have one, but make sure the chimney is swept to avoid that smoky smell. Ensure the heating has warmed the house before buyers arrive and dust that gathered in vents over summer is removed well before using the heating during the sale period. Have the heating higher than usual - remember that during an inspection the doors will be open, chilling your home - and you don’t want the heating constantly turning on and off. And for late inspections, turn on the lamps and draw the curtains so that your home is a welcoming haven. During daytime inspections, particularly late afternoon, maximise light by pushing curtains right back and putting blinds to the top so every scrap of sunlight enters. Turn on every light and lamp some experts even suggest placing spotlights on the floor behind furniture. Maximise available sunlight by ensuring shrubs and trees are not blocking light from windows. Keep lawns mowed, edges trimmed, garden beds weeded, paths clear and rake up every last leaf you don’t want buyers thinking this property will be too much work. If it is raining, or rain threatens, have a container for umbrellas prominently positioned and mats outside and inside the doors. Above all else, talk through home opens, and your marketing campaign, with your agent to maximise results this autumn.

Print does the job on employment Newspapers remain a popular medium for job hunters searching for their next role despite the wide choice of domestic and international alternatives online. Emma data shows 1.4 million job seekers use print newspapers each month. Job seekers from certain industries are more likely to use print newspapers for job hunting. Those looking for work in public administration are 46 percent more likely to use print newspaper’s employment sections with similar results for mining (44 percent), and teachers and lecturers (27 percent) more likely to use print. Businesses looking to find the right candidate should employ print newspapers as part of their search, or risk missing out on a large pool of potential candidates.

THE Wangaratta Cycling Club's Two Day event is the traditional start of winter racing in the region. A tough four-stage race across the two days always attracts a strong Albury/Wodonga contingent to match up against riders as far afield as Melbourne. The event is a great opportunity for those coming off a solid summer of riding to achieve some results, but also a good springboard into the season for riders with Wagga to Albury ambition mid-winter. The stages include a 10km time trial and a tough 50km road race on day one, with a gravel hill climb and a circuit race on day two. The winner is the rider across each of the four grades who has achieved the lowest aggregate time. Traditionally in stage races, once a rider has abandoned a stage they are no longer able to compete in the remaining stages. One of the popular aspects of the Wangaratta tour is riders are able to re-join the race, therefore gain more fitness of experience, which also creates a relaxed and fun atmosphere. Top local riders Neil Van Der Ploeg of the Avanti Team and Madeline Wright of Specialized headed the strong border contingent, with both in
The Bended Elbow Team's Ken Payne. Picture: CONTRIBUTED excellent form from the recent Tour of South West. Neil quickly stamping his authority on the A Grade event winning the opening time trial, but was pushed hard in the following stages to maintain his lead by a strong field. Eventually coming out the winner of the event, Neil also took the time to mentor younger riders throughout the event and pass on his extensive knowledge. A relatively new rider at national level, Madeline Wright continued to impress with a fine 6th
overall in the C Grade Division. An excellent climber, Madeline made up valuable time each time the road went up. A number of other locals also stood out at the event. Brad Rose of the Bended Elbow Team was competitive throughout the A Grade event, gaining valuable experience and fitness. Murray Wallace, Terry Halpin, Nathan Tooley and Ken Payne rode hard all weekend to lay a strong foundation of race fitness for the tough mid-winter racing ahead. Ron Lonsdale. 154919

semi, Preliminary or Grand Final? Whichever it is, this one should be a beauty but how do you tip against winning form. Albury by 37 points! North Albury will need to regroup quickly as they play host to Corowa Rutherglen on their home track. With more to play for and the fear of another Akermanis spray may be enough to get them back on the winners track. Birallee Park will be a real testing ground for both host and visitor alike. Have Wangaratta got what it takes to stake a claim for finals action or will Raiders continue their resurgence even without their star forward Ross Tangatulum. Rovers will need to call on all players to lift against a crest-fallen Yarrawonga side who have lost at their past two outings. With a couple of injured players to return for the Pigeons, they should account for a Rovers side that does perform well in their home nest. Yarrawonga, as long as their mind is on the job. Wodonga will host Myrtleford in the final game of the round with both sides clinging to the hope of playing in the finals. Myrtleford perform better at McNamara Reserve while the Dogs are also more comfortable at home and that could provide the winning edge. Results: Wangaratta 9.7(61) d Wodonga 8.8(56); Wodonga Raiders 15.13(103) d North Albury 3.6 (24); Lavington 15.12(102) d Wangaratta Rovers 11.8(74); Albury 19.10(124) d Yarrawonga 8.5(53); Myrtleford 20.18(138) d Corowa Rutherglen 6.7(43).

THE SS&A Ovens & Murray Football Netball League’s Charity Round will take place this Saturday 4 June. The league has teamed up with the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund to raise awareness and financial support for the fantastic work undertaken by this 100 per cent local charity. The AWRCCTF was formed to support cancer services in our region, in particular the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre, and provide quality care to patients and families. All funding contributes to the purchase of new equipment, upgrades to existing equipment, professional development for local staff, cancer research and a range of other critical support programs. A range of events will be held across league matches in round 10 competition: Wodonga Raiders will host a charity afternoon tea while North Albury Football Netball Club and North Albury Sports Club will host a charity luncheon. Tickets for the luncheon are only $35 and includes a welcome drink, two course luncheon, entry to the clash between the Hoppers and Corowa-Rutherglen, a ticket in the lucky door prize and a donation to the AWRCCTF. Tickets can be purchased by contacting the North Albury Sports Club on 02 6025 8877. The AWRCCTF is also in full swing for preparations for their major event for 2016, Sunshine Week. Lauren’s new role By MONIQUE KUZEFF

THIS weekend marks the midway point in the season, the corner is turned and noses are pointed towards September action for some on field - or for five clubs - mothballs. The Wodonga Raiders promoted a Say No to Domestic Violence lunch before their clash with North Albury at which long time anti violence advocate Phil Cleary delivered a stirring speech to a crowded club room’s audience. The official White Ribbon round will be held as part of Round 14 on 16 and 17 July. Myrtleford Football Club hosted the AFL Work safe Game of the Round at which evergreen AFL Statesman David Parkin, a multiple premiership winning coach held more than 220 people spellbound. Now in his seventies, Parkin held the crowd in the palm of his hand as he discussed life issues, football anecdotes and the need for safety in the workplace, in particular on farms. The Alpine Saints were able to draw away from Corowa Rutherglen in the second half to record an impressive victory and keep September action as a distinct possibility. Albury proved that they are possibly the best combination of all time with a resounding 71 point victory over the Yarrawonga Pigeons. Yarrawonga were thereabouts at half time but after the long break it was a case of how far the Tigers. An upbeat Drew Barnes while disappointed with the result said there was a long way to go and life can take some interesting twists and turns. Wodonga Raiders in their strongest performance of the season thrashed North Albury by some 12 goals plus in an even performance. Prior to the game the message of non violence among players was highlighted by a brief ceremony where players from netball and football met their opposition shook hands and wish each other the best for the day. The netballers took it so much to heart they played a draw. Closest match of the day was at Norm Minns Oval where the hosts, who are a tipster’s nightmare, held off a side with an equally indifferent form line to win by five points. Lavington had a contest on their hands all day to stave off a Wangaratta Rovers side to record their third straight win. Which final preview will be played out at the Sportsground, will it be the Second
Teaming up to fight cancer
DESPITE being forced to walk away from her professional sporting career because of a knee injury, Albury’s national basketball queen Lauren Jackson is not ready to quit and recently took up an offcourt role as the commercial operations manager for the Melbourne Boomers. The 34-year-old has joined the Melbourne Boomers, supporting the club as it embarks on a transition to ownership by a group of financial supporters. The well-known Melbourne Boomers club has homed more Australia Opals, Olympians and World Champions than any other club in Australia. The rescue of new ownership comes as good news for the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL), which saw the loss of two clubs in the past five years and had faced risk of mounting a six-
team competition when its former owners, the Bulleen Templestowe Basketball Association, returned their licence. Excited about her new executive role, Jackson said she was eager to contribute to the future of basketball in Australia. “For Olympic success we need a strong WNBL presence and strong teams like the Melbourne Boomers,” Jackson said. “I admire the new owners who are putting their money and time into supporting women’s sport, and I’d like to call on all Melbourne basketball fans to get behind the Melbourne Boomers.” Etihad Stadium chairman Tony Hallam initiated the club’s rescue by scraping together a group of insightful sporting and business supporters to form the Melbourne Basketball Pty Ltd, which will own the Melbourne Boomers.
