IT’S been a long six months for Healesville Sanctuary resident, Noojee, but the koala has recovered well after being found by the side of the road. Noojee is believed to have been hit by a car in November last year near his namesake town, and was rushed to the sanctuary’s Australian Wildlife Health Centre for treatment. Last week, the Mail caught up with Noojee and his keeper, Kristy Eriksen, pictured.

“It’s exciting to see mobile phone coverage is being acknowledged as black spots are a big concern to us,” he said.

“Not only on a safety level but also for economic development; we have a lot more home businesses that rely on an effective and reliable connection and this will let them prosper.”

The exact location of the new mobile phone towers will not be announced until the tender process has been complete and telecommunication companies have tested the area.

Labor candidate for Casey, Hovig Melkonian said Labor supported the program but would extend it further under a Labor-led federal government.

“We support Tony Smith’s announcement and support the funding of the black spot program but the Liberals have not gone far enough,” he said.

“There are 10,800 identified black spots on the national network and less that five per cent have been funded under Turnbull.”

Mr Melkonian said the towers that had been funded and built under the Coalition Government’s program were skewed towards Coalition-held seats.

“Labor is committed to enhancing the black spot program in Casey and I am disappointed in way it has been rolled,” he said.

“Some 499 towers have been funded so far, 416 of them have been in Coalition electorates and only 21 of them have been switched on.

“I don’t profess to know what’s going on exactly with how the Liberal Party is allocating funding but it does seem odd it’s not based on need, it’s happening only during election time,” he said.

Mr Melkonian also said a mobile black spot program funded and managed by a Labor Government would see mobile phone towers built in places where the need was greatest.

“I understand the importance of reliable mobile coverage in fire-prone areas like Casey; it’s of paramount importance to ensuring everyone’s safety,” he said.

“We are committed to funding and improving the Mobile Black Spot program on the basis of need.”

CASEY MP Tony Smith paid a visit to the Mount Evelyn football ground with Minister for Regional Communications Fiona Nash to announce funding for four new mobile phone base stations.

Mr Smith and Ms Nash announced the funding for towers in Mount Evelyn, Chum Creek, Reefton, and Kalorama on Tuesday 24 May as a condition of a Coalition win in the upcoming federal election.

The funding will make up round three of the Mobile Black Spot Program which has seen $160 million in previous rounds contributed by the Coalition Government to improve mobile phone coverage in regional areas.

“We are here today to make an absolute commitment that a re-elected Turnbull government will provide funding for four new towers,” Mr Smith said.

“These towers will provide a big benefit for safety and a stronger local economy.”

Ms Nash said while the Federal Government and telecommunication companies decided where the towers would go, they would be built to benefit local communities.

“This round particularly focuses on difficult areas and areas that telcos may not consider commercially viable,” she said “We are also making sure we are taking communities’ views in consultation about what priorities are in local areas.”

The four towers announced will see telecommunication companies partner with government in the planning and building of towers in non-metro areas with poor mobile phone coverage.

“We will put locations forward and invite telcos to be part of the partnership in what is effectively a tender process,” Ms Nash said.

The projected round three of the Mobile Black Spot Program sets out location for between 100 and 150 towers that will cover roughly 900 mobile coverage black spots.

Local business people and Yarra Ranges Council were in attendance at the announcement and spoke positively about the proposed funding.

Yarra Ranges Mayor Jason Callanan said new phone towers in the area would help their local communities grow.

HOW to put the problem into plain words?

There is apathy in voter land and increasing desperation observable in ‘pollie’ land.

Voters tend to roll their eyes and throw up their hands in despair.

‘Pollies’ tend to flap their mouths ever faster.

Sadly, only the same old cliches emerge.

It is all about whose ‘spin’ we are prepared to bet on at the ballot box.

Don’t they understand that we hear their words but we know from painful experience that they mean absolutely nothing.

They are not us.

They belong to another tribe concerned only with fighting each other for power.

What we want to hear is not that ‘they’ have a plan or that ‘they’ will fix education or health or whatever else is topic of the moment.

What we need are representatives who understand what the word ‘government’ actually means.

Maybe we need to think about this, too.

It is certainly not about promises and pork barrelling and pitting different groups of people against each other.

We need people in Canberra who are capable of sitting down together, of listening to each other, of identifying and naming the fundamental problems that need solutions.

Together, they must then find ways of resolving these problems.

As citizens, we must also accept our own responsibility for attaining the common good.

It is clear that Australia has economic problems, sustainability problems and social problems.

Funds are required to address all of these things.

Unfortunately, most politicians seem to be focused on doing this without raising the necessary taxes.

Are they mad?

Is this not the fundamental responsibility of government - to raise taxes and allocate the funds in the most equitable manner?

Who watches the watchers?

YOUR recent article on a tour of the Yarra Ranges Council buildings is an admission that the council administration has been negligent and failed in their duty of care to protect staff by not following OH&S WorkSafe protocols.

Where have the council inspectors been all this time and could they be accused of being negligent by not acting to immediately demand repairs to eliminate the risk of staff being electrocuted?

How many other council assets are in the same situation?

Council inspectors and WorkSafe are quick to inspect and demand immediate closure of unsafe private premises but they are nowhere to be seen to order the shutdown of council offices they are now admitting are dangerous.

I’m amazed WorkSafe has permitted council workers to occupy dangerous premises and that the insurances are still valid.

TAFE a shadow DESPITE Labor’s promises to spend more on TAFE and increase enrolments, TAFE numbers are down and dollars have been slashed.

Training and Skills Minister, Steve Herbert, has admitted to massive funding cuts to student training under questioning from Parliament’s Public Accounts and Estimates Committee.

More than $175 million in funding meant for student training was cut from the Victorian Training Guarantee, including $125 million that was returned to consolidated revenue.

A further $50 million of money earmarked for student training was instead handed out as general grants to ‘bolster’ TAFEs, with no outcomes or deliverables attached.

The admission shows Labor has broken its pre-election promise to grow enrolments and restore TAFE. The number of students in government-subsidised training has plummeted by 15 per cent under Labor but Mr Herbert claimed “they’re not real numbers”.

Daniel Andrews and Steve Herbert are failing to help our local young people get the skills they need to find a job.

They have broken their promises to our region - and it’s our young people who are suffering.

Famed bridal venue

By JESSE GRAHAM A YARRA Valley venue has been inducted into the Australian Bridal Industry Academy Hall of Fame following years of back-to-back awards.

On Tuesday, 17 May, Yarra Glen’s Zonzo Estate was inducted into the ABIA’s Hall of Fame at the academy’s Victorian awards night, after being named as the winner of the Restaurant Reception award for the sixth year running.

Crissy Micallef, who runs Zonzo with husband, Rod, said the win was a “huge surprise”, and acknowledged years of hard work by the staff.

“It feels surreal,” she said.

“I’m speechless about it. We’re both thrilled.”

The ABIA awards are decided based on votes from the bride and groom following a wedding - they evaluate the business on the qual-

ity of their products, their service, value for money and the attitude of the staff.

Crissy said that she appreciated the feedback from the wedded couples who put their votes forward, which won them the Restaurant Reception award for six years.

“It’s a lot more rewarding, I suppose, because you’re contributing to people’s biggest days of their lives,” she said.

“It means more to be voted for by them - so that’s why we appreciate this award so much.”

She said that couples who married at the estate often visited in later years, for anniversaries or just to say hello.

She said that she met Rod at the venue about six years ago, when she was attending a function, and that the couple got married on the grounds in 2014.

Last year, the estate ran just under 100 weddings at the venue

This year, Crissy said that number was over the 100 mark - some-

thing she attributes to the “military precision” of the staff. “We’ve done so many weddings now, it’s a welloiled machine,” she said.

CHUM Creek students had the chance to unwind with a story on Wednesday, 25 May, when McKenzie’s Tourist Services’ Kevin Brickley read to them as part of the National Simultaneous Storytime.

The simultaneous storytime involves schools, playgroups and pre-schools across the country stopping to read the same story at the same time.

This year’s book was 'I Got This Hat!'

by Jol and Kate Temple, and Mr Brickley read the book to Chum Creek Primary School’s students at 11.45am on the Wednesday.

The students at the school read the picture book along with Mr Brickley, wearing their own crazy hats to go along with the story. Principal Michael Corr said it was the sixth year that the school had taken part in the storytime, and at each year a member of the community is invited to read.

In brief Suspicious firearms inspector POLICE are searching for a man acting suspiciously around Healesville, allegedly approaching homeowners to conduct firearms inspections.

Crime Stoppers Victoria announced on Friday, 27 May, that police were searching for a man who visited a Healesville-Yarra Glen Road property in Healesville at 4pm on Saturday, 19 March.

When the man requested to conduct a firearms inspection, the occupant asked the man for identification, which he refused.

He then left the area.

The man is believed to be between 30-40 years old, about 196cm tall, with a medium build, brown eyes and short black hair.

On the day of his visit to the Healesville property, he was clean shaven and wore sunglasses on his head, and was driving a large black late-model sedan.

Sheriff joins police on the hunt AN ELDERLY Kinglake man will face court to face multiple driving charges, after being picked up by an automated number plate recognition (ANPR) operation in Yarra Glen last week.

The ANPR operation, run by Yarra Glen police and the Sheriff on Tuesday 24 May, netted $42,000 in warrants over the day, and caught five unregistered vehicles.

One of those unregistered vehicles was driven by a 72-year-old Kinglake man, who will be charged on summons for driving an unregistered vehicle with false plates attached, driving without an alcohol interlock and driving on a suspended driver’s licence.

Sgt Coulson said that of the $42,000, $15,000 was paid on-the-spot by drivers.

He said three of the drivers were found to have 47 outstanding warrants, totalling $18,500. They were each issued with seven day notices.

Two other drivers had 24 outstanding warrants worth $8480, and were issued with a notice to suspend licences and/or registrations.

Out to bag tagger A TAGGER is being sought by police, after a horse float in Badger Creek was sprayed with graffiti last week.

Sergeant Stewart Thomson said that between 11.30am on Tuesday 24 May and noon the following day, a horse float parked in Badger Creek Road, Healesville, was sprayed with graffiti.

Sgt Thomson said that police were following up inquiries in relation to the graffiti, and that fences in the area had also been sprayed.

Horse floated graffitied

Rare koala enjoys a healthy cuddle SIX months on from being found injured by the side of the road, Noojee the koala is well-mended and living luxuriously at Healesville Sanctuary.

In November 2015, the koala joey was found orphaned by the side of the road near Noojee (his namesake) with a broken nose and a burst eardrum - injuries that may have come from being hit by a car.

He was taken to the sanctuary’s

Australian Wildlife Health Centre for treatment, and when visited by the Mail on Wednesday 25 May, Noojee seemed to have made a full recovery.

The one sign of his injuries is a crooked nose and jaw, which keeper Kristy Eriksen said meant he couldn’t be released into the wild.

“With his injuries, he wouldn’t survive long in the wild,” Ms Eriksen said.

“He’s now about 15 months old,

he just hit five kilograms, and as you can see his face is a bit crooked still - but otherwise, he’s doing really well.

“He needs regular care - we need to be monitoring him each day and the way he’s eating.”

She said that an average day for Noojee included plenty of sleeping and eating, as well as walks around the sanctuary grounds to get him used to the different sights and sounds.

Because the koala was handraised from a young age, Ms Eriksen said that Noojee was one of the few koalas who enjoyed cuddling by their keepers.

“Not all koalas do - it’s quite a rare commodity for a koala to enjoy a cuddle,” she said.

Noojee will be one of the koalas moved into the sanctuary’s new Koala Forest, which is being prepared ahead of its opening on the school holidays, on 25 June.

YARRA Glen police are on the hunt for a driver who caused more than $20,000 in damage to a bridge in Dixons Creek between April and May, with VicRoads out of pocket for the repair.

Sergeant Richard Coulson said that between 19 April and 3 May, a large vehicle struck a bridge on the Melba Highway in Dixons Creek, damaging the concrete railings.

He said the railing damage, the structural works and traffic management to repair the bridge would cost about $20,000.

“It obviously would have caused significant damage to any vehicle which may have collided with it,” Sgt Coulson said.

Doing it for Ray THE Salvos and Healesville Jewellers will be raising money for the Red Shield Appeal in the coming week, shaking tins in place of a beloved fundraiser who suffered a heart attack on Saturday.

Healesville Salvation Army Lieutenant Sarah Eldridge said the organisation would be running a fund-raising day on Saturday 4 June, to gather funds on behalf of long-time fund-raiser, Ray Ryan.

Mr Ryan, who can usually be found with his fund-raising tin out the front of the jewellers, suffered a heart attack on Saturday 28 May near the Healesville RSL. Lt Eldridge said that a doctor based

at the east end of town rushed to the scene with a defibrillator to save Mr Ryan’s life.

An Ambulance Victoria MICA team and local paramedics then treated Mr Ryan, before he was taken to hospital.

Lt Eldridge said he was expected to recover, but was still in intensive care.

She said Mr Ryan often competed with himself during the Red Shield Appeal, trying to top his previous year’s fund-raising, and that the Salvos and the jewellers would be collecting money in his stead in the coming week to top up his efforts.

Donations can be made during the week to the Healesville Jewellers, 197A Maroondah Highway, Healesville, or to volunteers at the aptly

named Let’s Do It For Ray Red Shield Day on Saturday 4 June.

On the Saturday, volunteers will shake tins at the front of the jewellers in Mr Ryan’s usual spot - to add to his fund-raising total for the appeal.

Lt Eldridge said that Mr Ryan had a goal of $3500 for this year’s Red Shield Appeal, but had raised just under $1000 before the attack.

“It would be an absolute miracle to get to that, but if we can at least get him well-and-truly over the $1000 mark, I think he’ll be pretty happy with that,” she said.

Cards and notes can also be dropped off at the jewellers, which Lt Eldridge said would be collected and taken to Mr Ryan on Sunday.

Dumper dumped A MAN is facing a $300 littering fine after illegally dumping green waste in the forest near Big Pats Creek, after an anonymous tip-off from a witness.

The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) announced on Tuesday 24 May that it had received an anonymous tip-off about a man dumping “several� trailerloads of green waste in the Yarra State Forest near Big Pats Creek.

DELWP project officer Joy Harte said that weeds from the man’s garden were dumped among the green waste and that the anonymous tipper had witnessed the dumping.

When contacted, the dumper claimed he did not know his actions were illegal.

Ms Harte said that dumping litter and waste - even green waste - was illegal, and that DELWP was investigating dumpings to charge those responsible. “It really is a problem for exotic weeds to be dumped in a forest,� she said. “It just sets us up for disaster further down the line - by putting it in our forest, it’s making our fire prevention worse. “I don’t know what the logic in that was.�

Dumping in the Yarra State Forest has been an ongoing issue for DELWP, with numerous cases of rubbish

and household materials being dumped off of roadside embankments.

The Mail reported in September last year that two truckloads of rubbish - including mattresses and up to 30 tyres - were dumped down a steep embankment on the same road as the Wesburn waste transfer station.

Due to the steep angle of the embankment, DELWP paid thousands of dollars for contractors to remove the rubbish.

In another case, asbestos was found dumped in the forest and was removed by specialist contractors at a cost of $8000.

Ms Harte said that, though residents complained about high tipping fees as a justification for dumping, illegal rubbish dumping cost DELWP thousands of taxpayers’ dollars. “Why would you do that, to spoil such beauty?� she said. “The budget for recreation gets blown on picking rubbish, whereas there are other, better things we could be doing with that - improving walking tracks and things like that.�

She said that more information was coming in from the dumped rubbish, and that DELWP was now looking at monitoring dumping hotspots to catch litterers redhanded.

YARRA Ranges residents will have to hold off with their burn-offs, with the council issuing a reminder that burning off is banned in residential zones over June and July.

On Monday 23 May, the Yarra Ranges Council released a reminder that burning off is prohibited in residential bushland areas through June and July.

Mayor Jason Callanan said the reason for the ban was because wood and organic material was wettest during these months, and would create “excessive smoke“ when burnt. “Burning wet material is prohibited under the local law,“ he said. “The law aims to strike a balance between burning off for fuel reduction purposes and reducing the impact of smoke on neighbours and the environment. “Residents across the whole

municipality may be affected, with Belgrave, Belgrave Heights, Belgrave South, Coldstream, East Warburton, Ferny Creek, Healesville, Kalorama, Kallista, Launching Places, Menzies Creek, Millgrove, Monbulk, Montrose, Mount Dandenong, Mount Evelyn, Olinda, Powelltown, Sassafras, Selby, Seville, Seville East, Sherbrooke, Tecoma, Upwey, Wandin North, Warburton, Wesburn, Woori Yallock, Yarra Glen and Yarra Junction being partially or completely residential zones.

Those in rural zones will still be permitted to burn off, for fire prevention purposes - however, burning off is also not allowed on Sundays, Smog Alert Days and Total Fire Ban Days in this zone.

For those in residential zones, the council suggested alternatives to burning, such as mulching, taking green waste to a waste transfer station or using a green waste bin.

By JESSE GRAHAM WHEN IT comes to men’s health issues, awareness is the key.

Men from around the Yarra Valley are invited to attend a Men’s Health Night, organised by the Rotary Club of Healesville, on Wednesday, 15 June.

From 7pm at the Healesville Football Clubrooms at the Don Road Sporting Complex, speakers including Rotary’s Ion Whykes OAM, prostate cancer ambassador Sam Gebert, Ross Bennett and beyondblue’s Tim Richardson will talk about key health issues - bowel cancer, prostate cancer, depression and

mental health.

Rotarian Peter Gebert said the night would be a chance to raise awareness of cancer and mental health, and how men could be prepared to notice symptoms and warning signs and where to go from there.

He said the speakers were locals who had knowledge of the topics they were speaking on, with Mr Whykes and Sam Gebert (Peter’s son) going through treatment for bowel and prostate cancer respectively.

“I think what, really, we’re focusing on is early intervention and correction,” he said.

“Your prostate cancer and your bowel cancer, early inter-

vention and it’s the most curable sort-of disease - if it’s left, it becomes a big problem.

“This is the message we’re trying to get out - get onto it early, go to the doctor.”

Mr Gebert said Rotary was canvassing the area, inviting sporting clubs and emergency services groups to gather residents and young men for the meeting.

“If we got 100 people I’d be delighted - 150 would be excellent,” he said.

Coffee and tea will be provided at the meeting, and all are welcome.

YARRA Ranges Mayor Jason Callanan is looking for two talented artists ages 12-25 to change how the mayor’s office looks.

Cr Callanan is seeking local young artists to submit designs for murals to cover two of the walls in his office.

“I want some cool art to be put on walls, to mix it up here in this office because it’s a bit plain,” he said.

The two mural designs will need to cover one wall 1.8m wide by 2.4m high and another wall 2m wide by 2.4m high.

While the design brief says the murals should reflect the Yarra Ranges, Cr Callanan is looking for more than just paintings of trees.

“It’s up to the kids what they want to put up but I’m looking for something that’s edgy, that’s funky and that’s fun,” he said.

“I want something that identifies young people of the shire and I want them to be imaginative in what they want to put up there.”

The two artists who are picked to paint the murals will each receive a $100 Chirnside Park Shopping Centre voucher.

The plan received some back-lash on social media with some local people upset established local artists were not chosen to paint the murals.

Cr Callanan said running this competition was the best way to give all artists an equal opportunity to get the job.

“We wanted to give people an equal chance rather than council just choosing two people to paint,” he said.

Food and wine paired off

By JESSE GRAHAM SMALLER wineries across the Yarra Valley will be opening their gates for two days of tastings and dining in June, with the annual Shortest Lunch coming around again.

The Shortest Lunch, held on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 June, will see 15 small wineries host visitors and serve matched food and wine over two days.

Visitors will pay $15 for entry, which includes a souvenir wine glass, and receive a map of wineries around Seville, Yering, Steels Creek, Healesville, Chirnside Park and Woori Yallock to visit.

From there, they will be able to indulge in meals with matched wines, have coffee and tea, talk with winemakers and taste the specialty wines, with scenic views of the valley from the cellar doors.

Seville Hill owner and winemaker, and spokesperson for the Shortest Lunch, John D’Aloisio said the event had been running for 17 years, with its annual attendance growing from 600 in its first year to about 2800 in 2015.

This year, he hopes to get more than 3000 people coming to wineries over the weekend.

But, unlike the event’s larger cousin, the former-Yarra Valley Grape Gazing Festival, Mr D’Aloisio said the Shortest Lunch was about the pairing of food and wine - not necessarily about the entertainment.

“It’s not any of the attraction - it’s just there for the ambiance of an event,” he said.

“The whole idea is for them to understand that the experience they get at this event is an experience they’d always have, any time they visit a

“It’s also the understanding that people realise that food and wine are a match - it’s not food and wine, it’s food with wine.”

He said the event was also a way for the smaller wineries, which run most of their sales through the cellar door, to showcase their products and encourage people to buy bottles to take home - and to visit again.

“Most of us boutique wineries are non-commercial, in regards to selling our wines out there at supermarkets, so we rely heavily on our cellar door for visitation,” Mr D’Aloisio said.

“The more people we can get out and the more people we can get to re-visit us, the better for all of us.”

The Shortest Lunch name comes from the fact that the event falls on the weekend closest to the

Mr D’Aloisio said the food would be “boutique, but refined”, with vegetarian options and desserts at each winery.

“We’re allowing all of the wineries to have an entree, a vegetarian option and a dessert, whereas before it was just the entrees only, and the place that had the dessert would be the place that gets smashed at the end of the day,” he said.

He said the feedback each year had been “fantastic”, and that the smaller serving sizes allowed people to visit multiple wineries to have their fill.

“Everyone enjoys the event, they like the wines, they like everything - but you get the odd person who says the tastings aren’t big enough; the food’s not enough, that sort of stuff,” Mr D’Aloisio said.

“If you went to a restaurant and you went and purchased a three-course meal, you’d probably spend upwards of $80, if not more.

“Here you’ve got the option of going around to all different wineries, tasting different wines and then experiencing different types of food with those wines - so at $15 average, you can have a four-course meal, you’re paying $60, and at the same time, you’ve got an array of wines to taste at the same time.”

The re-awakening of El Sabah Nur (Oscar Isaac), the mythical first mutant, places the entire world in jeopardy, and the X-Men, led by telepath Professor X (James McAvoy) must band together once again to stop him.

For all Isaac’s stolid gravi-

tas, El Sabah Nur is a generic antagonist with vague worlddestroying motivations.

The film wastes a lot of time showing him recruiting his Horsemen of the Apocalypse, as most of these henchmen have negligible roles in the narrative.

First Class was a politicallycharged prequel and Days of Future Past was a universe-altering revisionist adventure, but Apocalypse has comparatively little impact or consequence.

Magneto (Michael Fassbender), El Sabah Nur’s favoured Horseman, is levelling entire cities

with his magnetic powers, but this carnage feels very disconnected from the film’s constrained resolution.

The action is exciting in the moment but unmemorable, save for (once again) a wonderfully creative slow-motion centrepiece with Quicksilver (Evan Peters). But Apocalypse is still leagues better than Batman v Superman because of its strong performances and some great character development.

Thoroughly mediocre, but still decently entertaining.

Olinda has now firmed as flag favourites with a resounding demolition of a weakened Woori Yallock side.

Wandin and Healesville are just ticking along nicely.

Alexandra upset Yea on the weekend, while Gembrook keep surprising some footy supporters.

Four teams are now on 16 points in Division 2 as the battle for the minor positions on the ladder heats up.

Wandin is starting to firm as a bit of a favourite in A Grade Netball but Olinda and Warburton are hot on their heels.

Division 2 has Yarra Glen and Seville all tied up and they do not meet for the first time until Round 8.

Home has its advantages WARBURTON GOLF MONDAY THE Warburton Golf Club hosted the members from Gardiner’s Run, (Chirnside-Park C.C.) in the biannual Stableford Challenge. Historically (or is that hysterically!), the ‘home’ side has almost always won these clashes - and this week was no exception. Warburton won comfortably on the score averages, which means they ‘hold’ the trophy until the next meet in November.

WEDNESDAY The Lady members hosted golfers from numerous other clubs in a three-person team event (Stableford). The winning team was from Beaconhills, with an aggregate of 85. There were separate NTPs and these were won by Shirley Atchinson (Berwick-Montuna) on the third, Kim Pitcher (B/M) on the 9th, on the tricky 12th was Lee James(B/H), the 15th went to Helen Long (B/M) and nearest second shot

on the 17th was won by Louise Ford (B/M).

The Men’s competition on the day was also Stableford. The daily winner was Stueart Hawke with a well-compiled 38 points. Runnerup was the ‘evergreen’ Ossie McClay (37). Balls extended to 31. The daily NTPs went to A.J. on the 3rd and 12th (a good return for the day, Alan!); Ossie won on the 10th.

SATURDAY The winner of the Stableford, with a welcome return to form, was the club treasurer, Mike Plant.

He accumulated an impressive 38 points. Runner-up, just one point behind, was Walter Jefimenko (welcome back, Walter!). The ball rundown went to 33. The NTPs went to Junior Cross (3rd) and, on the difficult 5th, to J. Paull. Allan Hubbard just about ‘owns’ the 9th! The 12th went to Kevin Conway and on the 15th to Mike Plant, topping off a great day for him.

Sanders, Snodgrass nail podium finishes

By RUSSELL COLVIN WITH the Three Bridges Yamaha Victorian Off-Road Championship (VORC) round cancelled due to 30mm of rain last Wednesday and Thursday, round three and four of the championship was moved to Pakenham at the eleventh hour.

Much thanks went to the hard work from the MCRCV, Kooweerup and Corner Inlet motorcycle clubs, which pulled together to enable the rounds to still go ahead.

Daniel ‘Chucky’ Sanders, 21, from Three Bridges, was nothing but all class in Saturday’s three-hour crosscountry format event, when he stormed to victory aboard his KTM 300EXC with a total time of 2hr30:12.614, 3min96.316 ahead of Mark Grove.

Saturday’s round win marked Sanders’ 14th career win in the Pro class since he made the step up in 2012.

Sanders told the Mail after the race; “It sure was a good day, that’s for sure.

Obviously when you win it’s fun and you enjoy it a bit more.”

“The grass track was sloppy, but it was a lot of fun,” explained Sanders, who hit the lead early in the race.

“When I got to the front, I just focused on maintaining my lines and rolling off consistent lap times which was good enough to come out on top today.”

Sanders, who tops the championship tally in this year’s Australian OffRoad Championship (AORC), also said the first cross-country race of the year was good training for the upcoming cross-country format for the next round of the AORC at Hedley, at the end of July.

The ups-and-downs of motorsport racing was proven on Sunday in the sprint style format.

After proving to be the man to catch in the opening two heats, drama struck for the reigning two times Pro and Outright VORC champion in the third heat when his rear tyre blew off the rim, which resulted him plummeting down to twelfth position, two minutes behind the overall race leader.

From there it was all about playing catch up, which Sanders said he quite enjoyed the challenge as it was a bit of a change to what he is normally used to.

Sanders topped the time sheets in the remaining four heats which saw him climbing back up the order to finish second overall, 1min12.783 behind Jack Simpson.

“It was a lot of fun out there today,” said Sanders at the conclusion of the day.

“While I did not win today, it was a good challenge to come through the

pack and get back to second place.

“It’s a shame about the rear tyre, but that’s racing.

“Main thing is we have extended our championship lead, so that is the positive we can take from this round.”

Meanwhile, 18-year-old Lyndon Snodgrass from Gladysdale, improved on his first VORC round by snaring two solid third place finishes aboard his First Class Motorcycles/Husqvarna Australia TE300.

Snodgrass finished 10.872 seconds behind Grove in Saturday’s crosscountry round, while round four saw him finishing 15.572 seconds behind Sanders.

“The weekend went really well,” beamed Snodgrass.

“I said before this weekend, round one was a ‘character building round’ just because I did struggle a bit.

“So it’s nice to leave the weekend with two third places and to be sitting third in the championship fight.

“There’s still a long way to go in this championship, so it’s not over by any means.”

Sanders leads the VORC title fight on 72-points, 11 points clear from Simpson with Snodgrass in third on 55-points.

The VORC circus now heads to Leongatha, which will take place on 18 June.

BRAVING freezing temperatures, rain and less than ideal weather conditions, a small but dedicated and enthusiastic group of Yarra Ranges Athletics athletes ventured to Mountain Recreation Reserve in Cockatoo to join the Cockatoo Little Athletics Club for a unique round of cross country at an exciting new venue.

Those who were brave enough to venture out on a morning where simply staying in bed was an extremely attractive preposition were treated to some classic cross country conditions; mud, puddles, obstacles, creek crossings, forest trails and, who could forget, hills.

The course was challenging with undulating and hilly terrain, bountiful obstacles and wet and sloppy conditions underfoot.

This - combined with a welcoming, friendly and relaxed atmosphere - ensured that the day was a success, with smiles beaming on all faces.

Motoring Haylee rides into the desert

By KATH GANNAWAY LAUNCHING Place dirt-bike rider, Haylee Malan, will have a great fanbase behind her as she tackles one of the most gruelling rides in Australia in June.

The 20-year-old is an integration aide at Yarra Junction Primary School and is studying to become a teacher.

Her goal to complete the 452-kilometre desert race from Alice Springs to Finke and back is getting her some serious street-cred with the students and teachers.

Promoted as ‘the most fun you can have with a helmet on’, and with a reputation as one of the most difficult off-road courses in one of the remote places in the world, the two-day Tatts Finke Desert Race is a multi-terrain event for bikes, cars, buggies and quads that attracts competitors from around the world.

Haylee is no newcomer to dirt-bike riding, starting at a young age and coming from a family which revels in the sport.

She rides competitively with the Motor Cycle Racing Club of Victoria, and in 2012 finished second in the Victorian Titles Open Women’s Class.

The Finke isn’t her first big race - In 2012 and 2013 she completed the Hattah Desert Race - but it is the biggest.

With her CRF250 bike primed for the race, she will line up in open section over the Queen’s Birthday weekend.

She said she signed on for the Finke to challenge herself and fulfil a goal to compete in an event that demanded a lot.

Fuel misers roam the Earth TOYOTA’S hybrid vehicles have saved their owners 25 billion litres of petrol enough fuel, theoretically, for each of their cars to travel around the Earth ... and then some.

The calculation was revealed by the world’s leading carmaker when it announced it has sold more than nine million Toyota and Lexus hybrid vehicles around the world, including more than 85,000 delivered in Australia.

The latest milestone, achieved in April, comes as Toyota Australia prepares to introduce its newest hybrid, Corolla, early in the second half of this year.

Toyota’s parent company in Japan has revealed that the total fuel saving from its nine million hybrids repre-

sents an average of more than 2770 litres per vehicle compared with driving petrol-only cars of similar size.

The saving would provide enough fuel for each of those vehicles to travel at least 52,400km, or 1.3 times around the equator, based on a nominal average consumption of 5.3 litres per 100km.

Three-quarters of the nine million hybrids use less than this amount of fuel.

Instead of doing that, of course, Toyota’s hybrid owners have pocketed billions of dollars in savings.

Toyota has also estimated its hybrid vehicles have resulted in approximately 67 million fewer tonnes of CO2 emissions than would have been emit-

ted by petrol-powered vehicles of similar size and driving performance.

Toyota Australia’s executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the extent to which hybrid vehicles had found homes in driveways around the world confirmed them as a mainstream option for motorists.

“Toyota’s hybrid vehicles are renowned for their performance, reliability, durability and exceptionally low running costs as well as their contribution to the environment and to saving precious fossil fuels,” Mr Cramb said.

Corolla hybrid hatch will be introduced as a well-specified single grade, expanding the local company’s Hybrid Synergy Drive offerings to a fifth model.
