FORMER Warwick Tourism and Events CEO Tracy Vellacott has welcomed a move by the Southern Downs Council to form an “in-house” group to help with the delivery of economic development, major events and tourism services.

“I believe it is a positive move by the Council,” said Ms Vellacott, who had held an event role within Council for almost six years before taking on the role of CEO of Warwick Tourism and Events for more than four years.

“In my view, there is no one size fits all for tourism and events. Each region has to be assessed by not only outsiders with best practice experience, but also those who know the local landscape well to know what will and will not work.

“You can’t fit a square peg in a round hole.

Remembering that no one model is going to be perfect all of the time.

“A look at neighbouring areas like Scenic Rim and Toowoomba show that local government can look strategically at tourism and event opportunities in their region and support them in the financial, logistical and operational aspects necessary to deliver great visitor outcomes.”

Late last week the council announced they would stop providing funds to the region’s peak tourism body Destination Southern Downs to form their own group.

Mayor Tracy Dobie said the move was aimed at optimising resources and reducing red tape and would be implemented soon following a decision

by Southern Downs Regional Council at its special meeting held Wednesday.

She said Council had resolved that it would not provide any further funding to Destination Southern Downs in the future, and new service delivery arrangements would be introduced.

“Council will not be providing funding to Destination Southern Downs and will be requesting that they cease delivery of their services by 30 June 2016,” the Mayor said.

By TANIA PHILLIPS MORE than 2000 people spread their picnic rugs and chilled out at the first Killarney Picnic Basket Day at Melrose Station on a beautiful Autumn day on Sunday.

The event was the brainchild of one of Killarney’s favourite son’s - the late Councillor Jamie Mackenzie - a day for people to chat and read and just stretch out and relax.

Event leader Deb Bradfield said it was a beautiful day and so successful that it is expected to be an annual event with this year’s event pulled together and organised in just six weeks.

She said a special thankyou to Peter and Colleen Lindores for opening their garden to create such a great event. It was a fantastic fund-raiser for the Livin charity (though the exact amount is yet to be determined), and the organisers can’t wait to do it all again next year The not-for-profit charity Livin is all about living your life at the top and destroying the stigma that is attached to mental illness.

Connecting, supporting and encouraging one another to talk about their feelings, issues and problems because ‘It Ain’t Weak to Speak’.

WARWICK Rugby Union will celebrate the contribution women make to their club and the sport in general when they host a Ladies Day on Saturday.

Ladies Day will be held at their home ground at Risdon Park in Alice Street, Warwick from 12.30pm.

The program for the day will see the Juniors training from 9am to 11.30am followed by an Over 35’s game at 12.30pm.

At 1.30pm Scots/PGC girls will play Downlands College girls in a seven-a-side game.

Girls rugby is fast-growing in schools and particularly in the Juniors, the club has as many girls as boys.

At 3pm the main game of the day sees Warwick Water Rats B Grade v Goondiwindi Ducks B Grade.

The Ladies will be feted with champagne on their arrival, followed by culinary delights catered for by the Killarney QCWA. Drinks will be served from 12.30pm and dress for the occasion is smart/race wear.

As the Water Rats club colours are black and white the theme for the decor will match and there will be two raffles held during the afternoon.

Co-ordinator for the day’s events, Bev Hall, said she would prefer that tickets were purchased prior to the event.

“At $10 each, one can afford to bring a friend along,” she said.

Bev will be at the ground from 9am on 28 May for latecomers to buy tickets.

TRAFFIC crashes continue to be an issue in the Stanthorpe area with another four reported during the past week according to local police.

Officer in charge of Stanthorpe police Senior Sergeant Mark Ireland said three of the accidents resulted in injuries.

He said the first one occurred on the afternoon of Wednesday 18 May at the intersection of Wallangarra Road and New England Highway when one vehicle entered the New England Highway forcing a southbound vehicle to brake heavily before colliding with the rear of the first vehicle.

“The female driver of the offending vehicle was transported to Stanthorpe Hospital suffering minor injuries,” Sen Sgt Ireland said.

“On Saturday morning police were called to outside Country Style Caravan Park at Glen Aplin where a southbound vehicle had collided with the rear of a utility that was stationary and turning right.

“The male driver of the stationary vehicle was admitted to hospital with suspected neck injuries.

“At about 1pm Sunday a vehicle failed to stop and give way at the intersection of Creek and Railway Streets resulting in a collision.

“Fortunately no persons were injured.

“The driver of the offending vehicle received an infringement notice for failing to give way.

“Police are currently investigating why the male driver of a vehicle collided with a power pole on Pozieres Road, Pozieres, at about 8am Monday morning.

“The driver was transported to Stanthorpe Hospital suffering chest injuries.”

Sen Sgt Ireland said as well as the accidents, police had been kept busy with drug drivers.

Caravan of drugs A 21-YEAR-OLD Lismore man will face Stanthorpe Magistrates’ Court on drugs charges next month following his arrest last week.

Stanthorpe police executed a warrant at a local caravan park on 18 May resulting in the man being charged with five drug related offences after a quantity of cannabis, ecstasy and drug paraphernalia were found.

WARWICK’S Rose City Shoppingworld is set for a $40 million facelift over the next few months.

Queensland-based property developer McConaghy Group has begun major works on the centre with a section of road on Fitzroy Street now closed for about about three months to facilitate infrastructure works adjoining the centre.

The expansion will see more than 160 new car parking spaces added with a new basement entry off Fitzroy Street, 20 additional specialty shops, an enhanced food court with seating provided for up to 250 and a new parents room and amenities.

McConaghy Group managing director Robert McConaghy said the redevelopment was designed to bring a modern shopping experience to Warwick while being sympathetic to the heritage style of the CBD. “We are very proud to be bringing this enhanced shopping experience to Warwick,” Mr McConaghy said.

“This will be a welcome addition to the CBD and boost the local economy through additional jobs and retail spending in the town.

“We expect 200 permanent local jobs to be created and for Rose City to attract shoppers from throughout the region and northern New South Wales.”

It is expected the redevelopment will be completed by mid-2017 and will employ up to 200 construction workers.

Southern Downs Regional Council mayor Tracy Dobie said the Rose City Shoppingworld expansion is a major coup for Warwick.

New look art Casey’s tips

THE Warwick Art Gallery is about to get a fresh, new look but it means closing their doors for a week and a bit.

The gallery will be closed while new floor coverings are installed in the exhibition, reception and office space.

The long awaited refurbishment has been made possible due to a successful grant application from the Warwick Art Gallery Management Committee to the Australian Government Stronger Communities Program.

The objective of the Stronger Communities Program is to fund small capital projects which will deliver social benefits and improve local community participation, cohesion and contribute to vibrant and viable communities.

Warwick Art Gallery director Karina Devine is delighted that the grant application was successful.

“We applied via the Hon Bruce Scott MP Federal LNP Member for Maranoa’s office when the Stronger Communities Program was first announced," Ms Devine said.

“Infrastructure grants are extremely worthwhile for regional galleries to maintain the functionality and appearance of these valuable community assets.”

Southern Downs Regional Council contributed 50 per cent of the total cost of the project and local business Choices Flooring Warwick was engaged to install the new carpet and vinyl plank flooring.

The gallery will re-open to the public on Thursday 2 June with a touring exhibition from the Maitland Regional Art Gallery.

Songs of Anzac ONCE more, Anzac Day has passed, and commendation must be given to the Warwick RSL for their exemplary efforts in organising the proceedings so well, and with such dignity, as indeed they do every year. It is a privilege and an honour to be able to attend, and for myself I would like to extend my thanks to you all.

However, it was sad to see that while the National Anthems of Australia, “Advance Australia Fair”, and New Zealand, “God Defend New Zealand”, were included in the service, the National Anthem of Great Britain, “God Save the Queen”, was not. Considering that British troops fought alongside the Australians and New Zealanders at Gallipoli, and that the Anzac Day parade is led by the flags of Great Britain, Australia and New Zealand in recognition of this fact, it is only right, proper, and honourable that all three National Anthems should be played and sung as well, to appropriately recognise, respect, and remember the troops, of all three nations, who side by side fought and died on the Gallipoli Peninsula in A.D. 1915.

As “God Save the Queen” remains Australia’s official Royal Anthem, and keeping in mind that the National Anthem of the Anzacs themselves was “God Save the King”, one would hope to see it included in future Anzac Day and Remembrance Day services in Warwick, as it is in many other towns.

The 15 young women worked with Zonta Club, in association with The Birthing Kit Foundation Australia, to assemble birthing kits to assist women in developing countries.

The purpose of assembling the birthing kits is to help provide a clean and safe birthing environment for women in developing countries

X-Men: Apocalypse (MA15+) Starring: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Oscar Isaac, Nicholas Hoult, Rose Byrne, Olivia Munn, Evan Peters, Kodi Smit-McPhee THE latest movie in the X-Men franchise - X-Men: Apocalypse is more of the same - boring for some, fun for others.

Watching this with a huge X-Men teen-fan might not have been the fun outing first expected. “I’m bored,” started just 20 minutes in as Miss 13 stopped taking it in and started lampooning everything on screen - probably not what the cast and crew were hoping for from dyed in the wool fans.

And yet it’s not really that bad. Yes it’s more of the same, but there is enough good character development to keep most of us interested and enough action and effect to entertain.

After taking us back to the '60s and '70s for his first two outings First Class and Future Days, producer Bryan Singer has moved the action forward to the '80s in the third of his “young X-Men” trilogy - cue '80s music, Michael Jackson jackets and Soviet Union references. He probably could have referenced a little more of the decade but he errs on the less is more and lets the X-Men themselves take centre stage.

But while the X-Men team is in the '80s (and we finally see Storm, Scott and Jean make appearances), for his villain Singer goes further back in time - way back to the great Egyptian empires explaining that there have been mutants forever - since the dawn of civilisation.

Xmen - Angel!

Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe.

He has amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible and now he’s back and taking on a group of mutant minions (the four horsemen of Apocalypse).

Current everywhere man Oscar Isaac plays the bad guy complete with blue-grey makeup and steely gaze and he’s menacing enough.

The presence of Isaac Star Wars’ Poe Dameron probably makes a joke about trilogies based on a group of teens coming out of Return of Jedi and saying the “third one is always the worst” slightly more amusing - I almost laughed at that one.

Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy are both in fine form and both get a chance to put in plenty of emotive performances. Fassbender actually impresses in his early scenes.

Rose Byrne is back as the CIA agent that the Professor is crushing on, making for some quite human scenes for McAvoy too.

However once again Evan Peters’ Quicksilver is the scene stealer. Singer looks back to the second movie, the highly successful “Future Past” and recreates probably the best scene of that movie - sort of. This is another slowed down scene with Quicksilver this time moving to the Eurythmics' “Sweet Dreams”.

Crepe recipe

(Makes 12) Ingredients:

plain flour · 1 cup ofoons teasp · 2 l milk of sugar · 240m · 2 eggsl cream · 200m milk · 50ml dark chocolate · 200g a powder · 20g coco es · Raspberri · Strawberries

Method: CREPE BATTER 1. Sift the plain flour into a bowl.

2. Add the sugar, milk and eggs.

3. Stir until the batter is free of any lump s and smooth.

4. Place a crepe pan or frypan over a medium heat and brush with some melt ed butter.

5. Once hot enough, pour in approximately a ladle of batte r to the pan. Turning it as you go to get an even coat of batter.

6. Cook crepe for one minute eithe r side using a metal spatula to turn.

7. Transfer to a plate and cover with foil to help keep them warm while cooking the rest.

8. To assemble fold the crepes in half and

then in half again. You can then plac e the strawberries and raspberries on top or tuck some into the crepe as well.

9. Drizzle with some of the chocolate sauce.

You can add a dollop of whipped cream or try with some vanilla ice-cream. Maybe try with different fruits. Serve and enjoy.

CHOCOLATE SAUCE 1. Place the cream and milk in a saucepan over medium heat. Bring it up to heat but do not allow to boil.

2. Remove from heat and stir in the chocolate and cocoa until smooth.

3. Set aside to cool.

This fabulous crepe will have guests coming back for seconds.

Wood heaters add a warm glow GATHERING around the fire is a time-honoured tradition and a special way to celebrate the moment in the year that the outdoor lifestyle shifts indoors.

Many modern wood heaters have adjustable burning settings so they can be safely left on all night to take the edge off the chilly mornings.

Another exciting innovation is the zero clearance heater which provides the opportunity for homeowners without a fireplace to create the awesome visual centrepiece of a crackling fire without any structural changes to the home - all they need is a blank wall which is ready to be transformed.

Beyond the traditional standalone heater, these insert heaters are not only fuel-efficient but can be a gorgeous stainless steel accent to a

living room.

Shopping for a new wood heater can be overwhelming, so here are a few key things to remember.

Convection heaters are designed with an air cavity between the firebox and the outer skin.

This means that as the wood is burning, the air in the cavity heats up, expands and rises.

The convection outer casing on the heater then draws more air in from the bottom, forcing the warmed air out of the top of the heater.

This is a new development in home heating technology that has only emerged over the last few years.

A good clean burning convection heater can produce more than three cubic metres of heated air per minute so a home can go from freezing to cosy in record time.

If a home is open-plan or a few rooms or a whole floor has to be heated, a radiant heater is a great option.

Unlike convection heaters, radiant wood heaters have all sides of the firebox exposed.

They are specifically designed for heating large open areas and keeping the whole household warm all winter.

Clean the lint filter every time you use a clothes dryer. Because lint that has built up can catch fire.

Never leave burning candles or any open flame unattended.

Store matches and lighters in a safe place out of reach of young children.

Make sure children know that if their clothes catch on fire, they mustn’t run away – this only makes the fire burn hotter and faster. Instead, tell them to: stop immediately where

they are; drop quickly to ground and cover their face with their hands; roll over and over to put out the flames.

Fireplaces If you have a fireplace in your home then make sure the chimney is clean and not blocked. Always place a screen in front of a fireplace when it’s being used, and never burn rubbish such as plastics or foam, wood that is painted or treated with copper chrome arsenate (CCA) or creosote-treated timber (such as railway sleepers).

Heaters No matter what type of heater you have, you should check it is safe to use every winter.

Always check your gas heater is working correctly and service it using a licensed gas fitter according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Signs that something is wrong include difficulty lighting it, yellow flames, unusual smells or noisy or inoperable fans.

Electric heaters should be checked for obvious damage such as rusted reflectors (especially on older heaters).

The power cord should also be checked for any damage. An electrician or service technician should do any repairs.

Don’t leave portable heaters in places where people or pets could knock them over.

Gas heaters produce heat when they burn gas fuel. This also produces air pollutants and water vapour. If your gas heater doesn’t have a flue, service it regularly and make sure the room is well ventilated. A flued gas heater vents air pollutants and water vapour outside the home through a chimney or flue, while an unflued gas heater releases them directly into the home.

Never use an unflued gas heater in a bedroom, bathroom or other small rooms with no permanent ventilation because harmful toxic gases can build up inside.

Electric blankets Check your electric blanket is in good condition and hasn’t been recalled by checking the Recalls Australia website. About 400,000 potentially faulty electric blankets were recalled in 2012. Faulty electric blankets can overheat, cause an electric shock, spark and potentially cause a fire.

You should always roll your blanket up to store it because folding it can damage element wires inside the blan-

ket. When you take it out of storage and use it for the first time, lay it flat on the bed and check for hot spots as it heats up.

Hot water bottles Use warm, but not boiling, water to fill your hot water bottle and examine it for leaks before you use it. Replace it as soon as it starts to look cracked or worn or every two years. Remember – the rubber can perish from the inside so you may not be able to see if it’s worn out.

Hot water bottles can cause burns if you place them directly on your skin so make sure they are wrapped in a towel or fabric cover.

Heat packs Heat packs are usually fabric bags filled with wheat or some other grain which are heated in a microwave before they are used to warm parts of the body. Caution is needed when using heat packs as they can cause burns or fires related to: being heated and placed on or in bedding, being heated in the microwave for longer than the time specified by the manufacturer, being reheated before they have cooled properly, being old and the filling has dried out and become combustible.

KEEPING warm and safe during colder months of the year also means being alert for indoor health hazards.

Arts fest gears up THE Stanthorpe Art Festival is now less than two weeks away with the town gearing up for a wide variety of artistic exhibitions and plethora of creative events.

This year’s festival attracted 715 entries from artists around the world.

Ron Ramsey (Art Gallery Society of NSW) and Dr Kyla McFarlane (GoMA) have pre-selected more than 100 artworks to be on display in the Stanthorpe Regional Art Gallery from 4 June till 17 July.

The highlight of the exhibition will be the announcement and presentation of seven awards, including the $20,000 winner of the art prize - the second oldest in Queensland.

“This year’s festival is our biggest festival to date!” gallery director Nic-

ola Holly said.

“I’m already biting my nails in anticipation for the Exhibition Gala Opening, there was an overwhelming number of artists who entered work and the finalists have created a fierce competition! I can’t imagine how the judges are going to choose an overall winner.

“The exhibition is the main attraction and features talented artists from across the country and around the world.

“The exhibition is a great opportunity to see what is happening in the art world and also to buy some affordable art.

“This year, alongside the exhibition we have artist talks, tours, performances, creative workshops and our popular

The Stanthorpe Art Festival has a long tradition of attracting serious names in the art industry including entries in previous years from William Robinson, the late Gordon Bennett, Gladdy Kemarre, Jason Cordero, Gosia Wlodarczak, and judges such as Phillip Bacon, Doug Hall, Davida Allen, John McDonald, and the late Betty Churcher and Andrew Sibley.

The army of volunteers behind the Stanthorpe Art Festival is fiercely determined.

For the past two years they have worked tirelessly to raise the prize money to be able to offer seven prizes with the total prize pool of $33 000 (includes two additional prizes) and two influential judges.

Elspeth Cameron accepts the $20,000 prize on behalf of Dena Kehan from Gallery Director Nicola Holly in 2014.

The art prize and the volunteer’s work are all about giving back to artists.

At the helm of the volunteer committee is Mike Roselt.

Mike is in his fifth year as president of the Stanthorpe Art Gallery Society and is also the chairman of the sub-

committee managing the art festival.

IN RACING, you can be on top of the world one moment and on the deck the next and Melbourne Cup winning jockey Michelle Payne is no stranger to the ups and downs. Earlier this week Payne underwent surgery in a Melbourne hospital following a nasty fall from one of her brother, Patrick’s runners at Mildura.

Payne was initially thought to have suffered merely bruising but was transferred to The Alfred hospital where she underwent surgery to repair a tear in her pancreas.

The fall came just days after Payne renewed her association with Melbourne Cup winner Prince of Penzance in an impressive run in the RA Lee Stakes at Morphettville.

Members of Payne’s extended family were briefed by doctors, but it unlikely the fall will cause this feisty lady to hang up her saddle.

Payne is being booked for rides at Royal Ascot and Sweden in the coming weeks, but it unsure how long she will be sidelined following surgery. Early indications are she will be in Prince Alfred Hospital for a week.

The danger jockeys face each and every ride was also highlighted in a horror six-horse fall at Taree on the same day. The footage of the fall is sickening, and it is a miracle no-one was more seriously injured. Of the six apprentices in the fall, one sustained a broken leg.

There is certainly only a split second between glory and disaster during a race. These falls are sobering reminders of the risks jockeys take every time they throw their leg over a saddle.

MAROON and BLUE - ALL THINGS ORIGIN THE action is certainly heating up with only a handful of sleeps left before State of Origin One. There has been much reported around the selections of the Blues side which sports many familiar faces, but also a clutch of debutantes keen to erase the bitter taste of the Game Three shellacking they received from the Maroons last season.

No real surprises in Camp Maroon as the Dad’s Army as the NSW press referred to them last year march into another year of battle. While we are probably coming to the end of a the reign of Smith Cronk, Thurston Inglis and their cohorts there is no Dad’s Army chatter from south of the border this year and neither should there be on the back of the club form of just about all of the players.

It is certain to be a nervous night on Wednesday for Kev Walters who has gone from a kid in the outer with his brothers and the Langer boys watching their heroes run out with Artie Beetson in that remarkable first ever Origin game to the man with reins of team Maroon. It has been far from plain sailing for this bloke, but if ever anyone deserves to taste success as Queensland coach it's Kev Walters.

This looks like an improved Blues side but the selection of Dylan Walker has raised plenty of eyebrows - as has the selection of a man squad rather than a NSW “team.”

Walters will no doubt bring his own flavour to the side, but I doubt they will stray too far from the tried tested and successful, and I think there will be more blue tears for Laurie and co this time next week. It will be close, but I think the Maroons might just get away with it - by seven or eight points.

SPLIT ROUND WITH Origin on the table, we have the first of the split rounds this week. Origin selections can often play havoc with the rosters of teams, and it is always a test of a team’s depth at this time of the year.

HODGSON CLAN OUT IN FORCE NUMBERS on the fairways and greens of the Wallangarra Golf Club were bolstered last Saturday when the Hodgson clan joined members of the club for the annual Frank Hodgson Memorial day.

Members of the Hodgson family travelled from as far as Orange, NSW, Gladstone, the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane to play in the single stableford competition for the unique but muchsought after Frank Hodgson Memorial Trophy.

While the Hodgson clan were out in force, it was Andrew Thompson who added his name to the list of winners on the trophy after finishing one shot clear of the inform Steven Hampstead.

Thompson also won the jackpot on the ninth nine. Pin shots went to Shane Purcell on nine and Hampstead on 14.

With two rugby league referees in the mix, Tom and Kerry Hodgson, we can report there were no send off and no sin-binnings, but some questionable calls were registered. Both were about to toss away the clubs and grab the referees gear and the whistle from the boot of the car to

fill in at the local rugby league game when the call came across the greens from the rugby league ground that the referee had not arrived.

A look of warning from Hodgson team captain Fran was all that it took to dismiss thoughts of offering their services.

The run downs went to Mark Lynam who also held the Pin shot at the third and Jim McPherson.

Cameron McPherson returned the Best Gross score of the morning. John Walsh and Angelo Maugeri did not go home empty- handed, each winning one of the much-prized meat trays.

TO THE TOP OF THE WORLD ADHERING to the old adage of if at first you don’t succeed Toowoomba teenager Alyssa Azar realised her dream last weekend to become the youngest Australian to scale Mount Everest.

After Mother Nature thwarted her two previous attempts, confirmation was received on the weekend that Azar and her team had succeeded in reaching the summit. Her dream finally taking her to the top of the world.

An earthquake foiled her first attempt, and last year a serious avalanche prevented Azar continuing. At her third attempt, there were again concerns over weather conditions, however the teen has finally achieved her goal.

It came as news was received of the death of another Australian climber who succumbed to altitude sickness on the descent from the summit, highlighting the point that the descent is often as dangerous as the ascent.

It was confirmed on Monday that Alyssa and her team made it safely back to base camp following their descent from the top of the world. This dedication and determination of this remarkable young woman should be an inspiration to us all.

Local Sport COWBOYS HIT A HURDLE AFTER some lean pickings in recent season, Toowoomba team, Souths continued their stellar season with a win over Highfields at Clive Berghofer Stadium in Round nine. The win puts Souths four points clear at the top of the TRL table.

The Warwick Cowboys “A” grade side has been riding high in the saddle in recent weeks, but on Sunday afternoon at Glenhome Park they hit a hurdle when they were defeated 30-16 by Brothers. The Cowboys have been in great form playing a consistent brand of football, however on Sunday it was the Brethren who made best use of their opportunities.

Brothers scored shortly before the half time break to lead 16-12 at the break. In the second half, the Cowboys hit back taking an 18-16 lead, but it was Brothers making the most of their opportunities. SCORE FOR DANIEL A GREAT initiative around the grounds on the weekend as the Stanthorpe football clubs participated in Score for Daniel. Clubs supported the cause aimed at raising funds and awareness of child safety. Getting behind the initiative Stanthorpe United contributed $10 for each goal scored in their game against Inter. City encouraged their supporters to wear red and donate to the cause. The club made a $250 donation. Funds raised go to the Daniel Morecombe Foundation.

A simple but effective fund-raiser - well done.

This was the final of the trial period for the new players and both have decided to become members.

In the second group, Val Fancourt and Bill Golding were in great form and proved too slick for Teresa Pyne and Elaine Brown, winning 13 8. Teresa Payne however scored a hole in one and equal top scored with Fancourt - each finishing with seven hoops apiece.

Following the break, Dianne Wren and Teresa Payne teamed up in a game of doubles against Elaine Brown and Marion Castle, winning 13-9.

Val Fancourt played two balls against the twoman team of Bill Golding and Justin Liddy. In a very close game, the men scored a 13-10 win not before Val scored a hole in one. In this game, Liddy top scored with a total of nine hoops. They

narrowly defeated her 13 - 10. However, she did score a hole in one and Justin top scored with nine hoops.Once again the great conditions ensured a good turnout for the gateball competition on Friday.

A couple of team games were played with Andrea Denkewitz refereeing. Margaret Dickenson captained the White team while Val Fancourt took the reins in team Red. Red won the first game 12 - 8, however the tables were turned in the second game while White recorded a one-point victory - the final score 11-10.

Following the break, the group split into four teams to play triples. On Court 1, John, Carol Verney and Margaret Dickenson, playing the White balls, won the first game 12 - 10. Their opponents, Grace Howard, Joy Newman and Jenny won the second game 14 points to 9.

On Court 2, Andrea Denkewitz, Justin Liddy and Val Fancourt played the Red balls against Bill Golding, Heather Widderick and Les. The Red team won both games.

BUSY WEEKEND FOR SHOOTERS IT WAS a busy weekend at the Inglewood range with events on both Saturday and Sunday.

On Saturday there was something for all tastes with four action Pistol events decided.

In Round 1 Lynne Shepherd took the honours ahead of Jeff Pickering and Ray Dudgeon. In the second round, the experience of Tom Donald came to the fore when he claimed a win over Jeff Pickering and Ross Jackson.

It was third time lucky for Jeff Pickering in the next round finally claiming a win over after his two second placings in earlier events. He proved too strong for Ross Jackson and Ray Dudgeon.

In the final event, Tom Donald made it a double with a win over Ray Dudgeon and in third spot, Vamshi Gandrath.

On Sunday in the first event, Wayne Duffy outscored Ross Jackson and Tom Donald.

In the timed event, Wayne Duffy proved too slick for Wal Shepherd who defeated Stephanie Dudgeon.

PENTATH RUN POPULAR A RECORD number of competitors took part in the 14th annual Daily News Pentath run last weekend. The men’s and women’s events were both won by newcomers to the sport. Liam Willett was encouraged to enter by 2015 winner Dan Symonds.

Winner of the overall women’s event was Kylie Simpson who was a late entrant in the event encouraged to nominate after a conversation with a staff member from Nike Robina. Simpson is no stranger to distance running, having competed in half marathons. She has an eye on selection in the upcoming Commonwealth games, and says she will train for the Pentath run next year.

RAMS WINNERS OVER CUTTERSs THE Wallangarra Rams notched up another win this season when they proved too strong for an improved Killarney Cutters last Saturday on their home ground. In a game which was delayed until a referee arrived the Rams got the job done in front of a parochial home side. James Springborg showed he has matured as a player and had a good game as did the consistent Farron Anderson. Killarney were much improved and for their supporters it was pleasing to see 15 players run out for the Cutters, giving them some bench players. Once again injuries in the first half meant 13 players were forced to shoulder all the work in the second half. In the end, the score line was 4422.

This weekend will be a massive challenge for the Cutters who host Inglewood when they play for the Bob Garred Memorial Shield.

WATTLES NOTCH UP WIN OVER BOARS WATTLES scored a much-needed win on Saturday night when they defeated Goondiwindi 3618.

The Warriors scored four tries to three with Jason Wilmott’s boot the difference. Wilmot nailed eight goals in a clinical kicking display from the best boot in the TRL competition.

ROOSTERS CROWING THE Inglewood Roosters and their supporters were doing plenty of crowing after upsetting BRL competition leaders the Tenterfield Tigers at McIntyre Oval on Saturday. It was a great way for the team to celebrate Brent Osborne’s birthday.

The Roosters confirmed their position as contenders in the 2016 BRL premiership race with a 44-14 win over the previously unbeaten Tigers. It was a good win for the home side, who down on player numbers, was forcing some of their players to compete for the full 80 minutes.

There were some fine performances from the Roosters with a man-of-match effort from Roosters stalwart Brett Bennett. It was a great defensive effort from the home side in the second half, forcing the visitors into a flurry of errors.

The Roosters have a solid mix of younger and older players and dare improving in attitude and defence with every outing.

PREMIER DARTS On Tuesday 17 May, Keith Carmody still growing strong, winning all his singles with 10 x80 and one ton. Brett had same amount of wins but two less 80s and four tons. Kathleen did well winning all her games, scoring 171 and high peg of 119. Also Mark won all his games 10x80s and one ton. There were a few players missing, so not everyone could play their scheduled games.

On Thursday 19 May, Young Ones dealt a big blow to KFC, final score 8-1. Clive Rudduck being man of the match with six pegs and two tons. A close game between Just Us and Don’t Know final score 5-4 to Just Us. Best player was Shelly Crummy with 1x 180, six tons and four pegs.

Next Saturday, the club will have its social game against Somerset Darts in Warwick. All players must be in the hall before 10am.
