Bats outfoxed By MEGAN OGLE RESIDENTS are going batty over flying fox colonies with local councils battling it out to fix the problem amid public outcry. Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) recently used noise, smoke and lighting to disperse flying foxes away from a residential area in Maroochydore, a move hailed as “successful” by local media and the SCC. Noosa Council was urged to follow in the SCC’s footsteps with Councillor Jason O’Pray recently telling local media that he “encouraged Noosa Council to educate themselves on the program”. However, a Noosa Council spokesperson said the council had al-
ready begun implementing their own flying fox management plan. “Noosa Council last year commissioned expert consultant Ecosure to provide flying fox management advice,” they said. “Ecosure’s recommendations formed the basis of a flying fox management options report that council endorsed late last year. “Ecosure recommended a range of actions to reduce the impact of flying fox colonies on nearby residents, but reinforced council’s view that dispersal efforts are unlikely to achieve long-term results of removing flying foxes from a local area.” The spokesperson said Ecosure’s report highlighted that dispersal attempts were expensive and failed to
keep flying foxes away with a great concern of potentially shifting flying foxes into other residential areas. This includes a flying fox colony currently located at Elizabeth Street Drain in Central Coolum. The SCC recently released a warning to Coolum residents not to touch flying-foxes that may be in their backyard following illegal dispersal attempts near the roost. The SCC had previously tried to disperse the flying foxes at the Elizabeth Street Drain last year using smoke, noise and lights but the attempts were unsuccessful. A SCC spokesperson said: “In May, the flying foxes returned after an absence of four weeks, and in July, they returned after four days.”
Local media reported the SCC has since announced they will implement a dispersal method similar to that of Noosa starting with the clearing of vegetation and the installation of a sprinkler system. According to Ecosure, one of the most practical management actions for dealing with flying foxes in residential areas is to increase the space between homes and the vegetation where the flying foxes roost. “Noosa Council completed vegetation work around the Wallace Park precinct last month, and is currently looking at a sprinkler system trial that can provide a further 15 metres of separation,” the Noosa Council spokesperson said.

Rachael needs wheels A LOCAL resident is calling on the community to help buy her very first set of wheels. While most 27-year-olds are busy on the weekends visiting friends and travelling around the Coast, Tewantin resident Rachael Henson relies on taxis and public transport to travel, making it difficult for her to be truly independent. Rachael lives in a share house and loves being involved in her local community and catching up with friends but struggles getting around without her own vehicle. With a dream to someday own her own wheelchair accessible vehicle so she can get out and about more often, Rachael would love nothing more than the freedom to travel wherever she would like to go. “I would really love to be out in the community connecting with and meeting new people, trying new things and visiting new places. I want to experience this wonderful world and get more out of life,” Rachael said. Rachael requires a car fitted with a wheelchair ramp, or one that can be modified with a ramp or hoist. The vehicles that allow for this are specific and costly, with Rachael needing to spend $40,000 for a car to suit her needs. Local charity Sunshine Butterflies have set up a personal fund-raising initiative which assists families, individuals, disability support groups, clubs and schools to raise much-needed funding towards specialised equipment and aids as well as many other areas of support. Community enriched by grants from government By MEGAN OGLE LOCAL community groups have come out on top, thanks to recent government grants. Member for Noosa Glen Elmes MP said he was pleased that several community groups in the Noosa electorate had been successful in receiving grants of more than $41,000 from their recent applications to the Gambling Community Benefit Fund. The successful organisations include the Lake Cootharaba Sailing Club who received a grant of $5909, Noosa Bridge Club Inc. who received $17,500, Noosaville
State School who received $9090 and Zonta Club of Noosa who received $8884. “Community and volunteer organisations are the backbone of places such as Noosa, so it’s important that they get help to assist with successful programs and activities,” Mr Elmes said. “I understand the importance of these groups and the difference their organisations can make in their communities.” Local beneficiary Zonta Club of Noosa president Patricia Cussens said the group was delighted to hear about the success of the grant.
“The grant, which will be spent on a computer and ancillary equipment, as well as a camera, projector screen, laminator and portable PA will help Zonta to undertake its work to empower women through the provision of three bursaries; one for Indigenous Women, one for Women in Business and one for Women in Science,” Ms Cussens said. “The grant will also help fund two secondary school bursaries to encourage girls to undertake aviation studies and will help to support many services and workshops in the area as well as fund awareness campaigns.”

Tip watch a Queensland first NOOSA Council is breaking new ground in waste management with the way it monitors its landfill site for environmental impacts. A council spokesperson said the new Receiving Environmental Monitoring Program (REMP) differs from traditional reporting arrangements, in that it considers Noosa-specific environmental values and downstream uses, such as irrigation and stock watering. Council worked with regulator De-
partment of Environment and Heritage Protection to modernise its monitoring arrangements following de-amalgamation. Council environment officer Cherie O’Sullivan said Noosa Council was the first local government in Queensland to design and apply a REMP to a municipal landfill. “With the REMP system our monitoring and reporting looks for impacts specific to Noosa’s fauna and flora and
downstream water uses,” she said. “As well as provide better environmental outcomes the REMP has slashed unnecessary paperwork associated with standard or one-size-fitsall reporting arrangements. “While two years’ worth of data is needed to fully confirm the results, the six months’ worth of data collected so far suggests our landfill is not harming any downstream users or wildlife, which is great news.”

people AS we sit back in our lounge chairs and enjoy the pleasant winter days, lets spare a thought of encouragement for three of our local lifesavers who are about to embark on a marathon bike ride from Coffs Harbor to Noosa Heads - all in the name of charity. The charity could not be more worthwhile, for it is to assist fundraising in the name of Foundation for Kids - kids who in their early years have suffered severe burns. Accepting this challenge will be Donald McKill, aged 50, of the Noosa club, and Christie Johnston and Sheldon Shultz, both 48, of the Sunshine Beach club. The ride, which will be a major marathon, will be held in late August. McKill, who is also one of the organisers, said of the ride: “We will cover approximately 650km, it will be tough but we have the time to prepare. However just to help these kids, makes it all worthwhile.” The founder of this most worthy organisation is Suzie O’Neill, a school teacher from Victoria. This week, 15 of these children aged from 13 to 16 years - from all over Australia - will be in Noosa for a seven-day visit for what is hoped will be a life-changing experience. Accommodation will be sponsored by Hasting Street Beach Houses. Activities will include beach games, learn-to-surf lessons, a visit to Australia Zoo and adventure walks. A support desk will also be established

A function will also be held from 6pm to 8pm on Friday to greet the guests and give them time to meet club officials. We thank all those involved and extend a warm welcome to our visitors.

Boomerang bags send plastic bags packing By MEGAN OGLE VOLUNTEERS have been working tirelessly to create an alternative to plastic bags in the shire, and their hard work is about to pay off with the official launch of Boomerang Bags next month. Boomerang Bags is a collaborative project that aims to use recycled fabrics to create alternatives to plastic bags. If you forget your reusable bags while out in town, you can pick up a Boomerang Bag to use for the day and return it when you next drop by, reducing the need for plastic bags. Project manager Desire Gralton said the reusable bags would be given to The Bent Banana, Peregian Beach, on Sunday 19 June to officially kick off the project in the local area. In the meantime, you can visit the Boomerang Bag workshop and store at Shop 4, 28 Sunshine Beach Road, Noosa Junction, where you can pick up hand-made bags, stainless steel straws, bamboo toothbrushes and ready-to-plant native flora. Hospice board is slammed By MEGAN OGLE A FORMER volunteer has slammed the Sunshine Hospice board, saying the community has been left behind. Cooroy local Clytie Glass said she was upset the Sunshine Hospice board, formerly known as Katie Rose Cottage, had not looked to the community for more support before its closure late last year. “In the past three years, there has been little, if any, interaction between the charity and the community, other than through the opportunity shops,” Ms Glass said. “Previously, various volunteers visited service clubs, sporting clubs; we had stalls at various venues to raise awareness and funds. To the best of my knowledge, little if any of this has been done in recent years.” However, Sunshine Hospice chairman Frank Lewins said while the support from the community in the forms of bequests and support for the local opportunity shops was impressive, it was not enough to sustain the operations of providing quality palliative care to the people of the Sunshine Coast, which, he says, led to the decision to temporarily cease operations in December 2015. “While the current fund-raising support we receive from the community is a great credit to the passion and commitment of the people of
the Sunshine Coast, it is not enough to sustain the operations of a hospice in its own right,” he said. Ms Glass said the Sunshine Hospice board was aware of the dire financial position before closing its doors, but chose to “leave it to the last minute” before seeking help. However, Dr Lewins said the donation of two significant bequests in former years had been allowing the hospice to continue to operate, despite inadequate new revenue being raised to meet expenses. “The bequests were wonderful, and gratefully received, but in effect they delayed the reality check that the hospice needed to have about the best-practice models for operating a high-quality, community-based, financially viable hospice in a regional area,” he said. Ms Glass said she believed the board’s plans to build a private hospital would mean a departure from the community model which the Katie Rose Cottage was well known for. “Going down the private hospital path is not only expensive to build and set up, it is expensive to run, even with government funding, and it completely destroys the ethos of the original model,” she said. Dr Lewins said the board was currently utilising emergency funding provided by the government late last year to investigate the most strategic and financially sustainable option for a community-based hospice for the
people of the Sunshine Coast. The one-off grant of $100,000 from the Queensland Government was provided to fund the development of a financial plan, fund-raising strategies and advancement towards the accreditation of the centre in keeping with National Palliative Care Standards. “We are considering a range of options, including models being employed to great effect by highly successful, community-based hospices elsewhere in south east Queensland,” Dr Lewins said. “These hospices have retained their commitment to and integrity as community-based hospices, while simultaneously achieving private hospital facility licences that allow them
to access additional funding sources. “If we decide to progress down the path of becoming eligible for a private hospital licence, we do not envisage it will be an easy task, but success would result in a standard of facility and continuation of care that the people of the Sunshine Coast deserve.” Dr Lewins said the board had not given up hope on securing recurrent government funding from state or federal governments, something he says other community-based hospices in Queensland have been able to call upon to ensure operations continue. According to Dr Lewins, the Sunshine Hospice board is continuing its investigations, research and modelling into “successful, community-based regional hospice models” throughout May and June, with a recommended plan for next steps to be in place by the end of the financial year. Dr Lewins said that once a model that was financially sustainable had been identified, consultation with members and the broader community regarding locations, operations and any requirements associated with operational and facility enhancements would commence. “The people of the Sunshine Coast deserve a high quality, community-based, home-awayfrom-home hospice that is sustainable for generations to come. We intend to find a way to deliver it,” Dr Lewins said.

Council's drive to get to zero NOOSA council’s new Emission Reduction Policy, which was ratified at its ordinary meeting on Thursday 19 May, paves the way for a zero-emissions target, according to Mayor Tony Wellington. The policy commits the council to increase energy efficiency across the organisation including the delivery of council programs and operations. It sets the scene for a new carbon reduction strategy that will include specific targets and an action plan. “This policy will ensure council leads by example in reducing energy use,” Cr Wellington said. “Achieving a zero-emissions target is the long-term goal. “Council needs to be mindful of the environmental implications of everything we do. “This approach will also mean we reduce our overall operating costs and become less exposed to
increasing fuel and electricity prices. “We will be carrying out a complete audit of council’s energy consumption and also seeking expert advice. “Next week councillors and staff will receive a presentation from Dr Stephen Bygrave, the CEO of Beyond Zero Emissions, a non-profit think-tank. “This is just the beginning of a long process of consultation and implementation that will ultimately place Noosa Council at the forefront of sustainability actions.” Cr Wellington said the Emission Reduction Policy was a natural next step for the council, honouring not only the shire’s Biosphere Reserve designation, but also commitments made by the pre-amalgamation Noosa Council. Cr Wellington said the policy would have implications for all council departments and would provide realistic timeframes and targets.
NOOSA Shire Council’s draft plan to better manage traffic into the future is open for public comment from 24 May until 14 June. The Noosa Transport Plan 20162036 includes a 20-year vision to change the way people travel, a 10year strategy for local transport planning and a five-year action plan. Residents can comment on all three at yoursay.noosa.qld.gov.au, as well as upcoming public YourSay events. The consultation calls for discussion about key issues such as a parking strategy, park-and-ride program, active transport, pathway, road network and public transport improvements, plus a behaviour-change program to reduce car use. The council’s Planning and Infrastructure Director Martin Drydale said congestion seen on parts of Noosa’s road network at peak times could become the norm, without efforts to curb growth in the number of vehicles on the roads. “We can’t keep building bigger roads to accommodate more and more traffic, nor can we continually upgrade intersections to handle heavier traffic flow. “The costs to ratepayers will be enormous and we’ll end up with traffic lights, flyovers and other big city infrastructure that our community has fought hard, for many years, to avoid,” Mr Drydale said. “To avoid six lane roads, traffic
Have your say: The council wants to avoid traffic lights and busy streets. lights and future gridlock we need a plan that achieves a reduction in vehicle use and provides practical alternative travel options. “If every resident used an alternative form of transport to get to work or school, even once per month, then we have some hope of reducing the need for bigger roads.” Mr Drydale said input from a community consultation in January helped shape the draft plan. “That input has been helpful. We know, for example, that some residents feel public transport access and frequency is insufficient, not just in peak holiday times, but even when it comes to accessing key precincts on weekends,” he said.

Girls go full throttle By MEGAN OGLE THERE’S a new gang in town and they’re out to prove girl talk isn’t just about make-up and shoes. Girl Torque is the only all women’s motorcycle group on the Sunshine Coast and they celebrated their sweet 16th on Sunday 22 May the only way they know how, with a big ride. Group leader Judy Noakes said the birthday ride attracted a large group of women who rode from Forest Glen
to Goombarian in celebration. Judy, a local who has been riding with the group for 11 years, said Girl Torque had been one hell of a ride. “Girl Torque was started by Helen Maurovic 16 years ago when she got her licence and realised there weren’t any women groups to ride with, so she started one,� Judy said. “The shared thread of riding has more often than not morphed into fantastic friendships created with women we wouldn’t have otherwise met.
“We have a very diverse group of some 80 women from all backgrounds and ages ranging from 22 years to 77 years and riding every style of bike. We get more excited for each other when we’ve bought new rubber tyres for our bikes rather than new shoes.� Girl Torque isn’t just about friendships; the group also hold charity rides to raise much-needed funds for local charities, and men are invited. This year the Bras ‘n' Bikes charity ride will be held on Sunday 23
October at the Yandina AFL Ground and is a big event in the biker community. “Bras ‘n' Bikes was born 15 years ago and it’s a very colourful event. THE annual Under Eight celebration will be held at Tewantin State School again this year with a special day planned for the community. This year the event will be held on Friday 27 May and will include a visit from local emergency services, sporting groups and Noosa Yacht Club. There will also be art stalls, community services and free activities for the kids spread across the hall and two school ovals. Stalls, which are run by the teachers, range from hot popcorn, playing with goop, gross motor obstacle courses, making necklaces, making kites, bubble blowing, painting and sand art, just to name a few. The purpose of the Under Eight day is to create an awareness of services, activities and organisations from the community that are aimed at children and support their families. Parents, grandparents and other family members of Tewantin State School students are welcome to the event. As well as children from the community who are under the age of eight, from child care centres or children who are home-schooled or other children who do not attend another school are also welcome to attend. Families that do not attend Tewantin State School will need to sign in at the school administration building, at the Werin Street school entrance. Activities run from 9am to about 11am. THE residents of Wallace Park and Pinaroo Parks are holding a meeting in Wallace Park, near the council car park, on Thursday 26 May, at 3pm, to discuss the issue of the bats and the council’s attitude. Give them a chance MINISTER Peter Dutton, just because someone is unable to read or write and is “illiterate“ as you say, which is also supported by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull (who should know better), doesn’t make them lepers. You should both try being good Samaritans for one day and don’t “put down“ those unfortunate to have not had what you were lucky to have received because of birth. People have an amazing amount of hidden talents and abilities that with a bit of consideration and compassion can be tapped into. Put it away I WONDERED why it was so important for Noosa Today to print a half-page banner picture of Robin Bristow promoting the Australian Sex Party on the front page of the 12 May edition. Wouldn’t the Australian Sex Party be a very small minority of the community to be so heralded in this way? And why you should quote his emotionally charged language such as “Queenslanders voters are sick and tired of being lectured to ... [on] issues such as abortion rights, nude beaches, lockout laws...� etc on the front page. I doubt this emotionally exaggerated statement is true. Bristow says his “driving passion� is to fight for “the lack of marriage equality and the school chaplains program�. Do you mean Mr Bristow that you want to promote the chaplains program, or fight to have it removed? Assuming the latter, why should you want to remove a program which is morally good and valuable in counselling our children how to cope with life and with bullying and school problems. And nude beaches? I came to Queensland for the sunshine and the beaches and the beautiful coastlines. I don’t want to be denied the opportunity to walk along any beach here just because a few nudies want it for them-
Roundabout way TWO points concerning the possible expansion of the Civic complex that has been popping up in the local news recently. First there was the question of what Noosa has against traffic lights. A local resident averred lights are better than roundabout. That statement is blown by a simple Google search which shows reports that claim roundabouts are safer, move traffic more quickly and are cheaper to build. True they are not suitable for busy city grids, however Noosa is not a busy city environment. Second, to the question of the possible expansion of the complex itself I would mention a couple of important sets of facts seemingly

These in my humble opinion are something developers and other outside influences should remember. Simply put, the people of Noosa have made it clear a number of times what kind of development they want. First, not long ago it was the vote to separate from develop-happy Sunshine Coast Shire. Then there is the local town plan, approved again by the local council and the residents. And don’t forget the voter approved population cap. So why the push to develop this site? Simple; just as nature hates a vacuum, developers
hate land with trees. The problem addressed by some locals, those who after holidaying in the area decide to move here, forget what they loved about Noosa and want everything they escaped from. Does the local shopper really need more big box department stores? More Woolies/Coles supermarkets? As a happy Noosa resident I vote no and hope the council agrees. Bill Sheehy, Noosaville. Bring on the buses AS A Noosa resident I cannot wait for the electric bus trial! We live on the 620 route and as such have to endure the constant rumbling of noisy buses passing. This is so bad that the vibration causes the house to creak and the windows and blinds rattle every time a bus goes by. While the road surface doesn’t help (due to a patchwork of tarmac), the engine noise is just shocking! The noise pollution from the existing fleet of diesel fuelled buses is far from being ’environmentally friendly’ and even further from the ’Biosphere’ that Noosa so proudly portrays. Why are such huge buses necessary anyway for every route? Many services are running empty! Let’s instead show our visitors, and the world how much we really care and how serious we are about protecting our environment. Come on Noosa Council - let’s make it happen! Persecution is motivated solely by the inconvenience. Relocation is an expensive option doomed to failure. Noosa is a Biosphere area with the responsibilities this imposes on our environment. Flying-foxes have been declared a ’vulnerable species’ come under the Environment Biodiversity and Conservation Act’ 1999 (EPBC). CONFIDENCE in the Queensland economy and building industry has hit a wall, dropping into negative territory for the first time in more than three years, according to Master Builders latest Survey of Industry Conditions for the March 2016 quarter.
“Much of the state has experienced a slowdown but encouragingly the survey results show that most respondents expect the economic outlook to remain stable for the coming 12 months,” Mr Bidwell said. “However there is a growing number of respondents who hold a more pessimistic outlook for the future, with nearly one-in-three respondents
who expect the economic outlook to deteriorate. “Low levels of demand are the most critical constraint on business growth. This is in line with falls in building approvals over the same period and the concentrated nature of the demand which has failed to reach many regions and sectors of the industry.” However the report also found the Gold and Sunshine Coasts now stand alone in maintaining a strong performance. Central Queensland had an improved quarter, moving off a low base and Far North Queensland
continues as the stand out among the regions. Greater Brisbane has come off its high as the demand for new unit construction begins to peak. North Queensland and

The Radiators, who in 2013 celebrated 35 years together since their very first show. The Radiators have carved a niche in the archives of Australian rock history and shared the stage with all the great Aussie acts such as AC/DC, Rose Tattoo and INXS, with over 4000 shows to their credit. They played their music to an estimated
three million people in Australia, recorded over 100 original songs, with two albums being awarded Platinum status, two achieving Gold and sales of over one million units. The Radiators still tour extensively playing an average of 100 shows per year and the band’s fans young and old, still flock to grab a slice of living Aussie rock history and

Food for thousands LOCALS and visitors alike are dusting the sand off their feet this week as they recover from an amazing weekend here in Noosa. Noosa Food and Wine 2016 was bigger and better than ever with over 10,000 people flooding to Noosa for the annual festival. Filling the vegetable void IN the wake of research released last week showing that Australians are a long way from meeting their recommended daily serves of vegetables and dairy, The Dairy Kitchen has created a new collection of vegetable-packed, calcium-rich recipes to inspire and motivate. From lashings of bechamel sauce on a vegie pasta to crumbled feta over a tray of roast vegetables, dairy foods such as milk, cheese and yoghurt are the perfect partners to jazz up the humble veg. The research released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics on the Australian Health Survey showed that alarmingly more than 96 per cent of Australians are not eating enough vegetables and legumes, and 90 per cent are not having enough milk, cheese and yoghurt. Australians are being urged to combat this by doubling their vegetable intake and adding an extra cup of milk; or 3/4 cup of yoghurt; or two slices of cheese to their daily diet - and these recipes show people how easy it is to solve the problem. Creamy Carrot Soup with Coriander and Yoghurt Ingredients 1 tablespoons olive oil. 1 teaspoon ground cumin. 1 small onion, chopped. 500g carrots, chopped. 1 cup vegetable stock. 1 cup milk. 2 tablespoons finely chopped coriander. 1/2 cup natural yoghurt.
Method 1. Heat oil in a medium saucepan. Add onion and cumin, saute for 3-5 minutes or until softened. Add carrot and stock, cover and bring to the boil. Simmer, uncovered, for 15 minutes, or until carrots are tender. Remove from heat and process with a stick blender until smooth. Return to heat and stir in milk and coriander. Reheat gently until warmed through. Serve with a dollop of yoghurt. 2. For Parmesan Toast: Grill bread on one side until golden. Turn over top with combined cheeses and grill until cheese is bubbly and brown. Serve warm with soup. Kale, Feta and Pumpkin Pie Ingredients 300g (2 cups) peeled, cubed pumpkin (1cm x 1cm). Olive oil spray. 1/4 bunch kale, shredded (3 cups). 2 spring onions, finely sliced. 3 eggs, lightly beaten. 1/2 cup milk. 100g feta, chopped. 2 tablespoons grated parmesan. 4 sheets filo pastry. 2 tablespoons pumpkin seeds (pepitas), optional. Method 1. Spray pumpkin with olive oil and scatter over a baking paper lined oven tray. Bake at 200 degrees Celsius for 20-30 minutes until lightly golden and cooked through. Place kale in a microwave safe bowl with a tablespoon of water and microwave for a minute or until slightly wilted. 2. Combine pumpkin, kale, spring onions, eggs, milk, feta and parmesan cheese in a
Parmesan Toast 2 slices sourdough bread. 1 tablespoon grated parmesan cheese. 1 tablespoon grated cheddar cheese.
Creamy Carrot Soup with Coriander and Yoghurt. bowl. Layer filo sheets in alternating pattern (lengthwise and width wise), into a one-litre baking dish, spraying between each layer with olive oil. 3. Pour filling into pastry and fold over excess pastry to enclose pie. Spray with extra oil spray and top with pumpkin seeds. Pairs final was a nail-biter TEWANTIN NOOSA BOWLS THE 2016 Ladies Pairs Queensland State Championships were played at Tweed Heads Bowls Club on Sunday 22 May with two of the club’s members making it to the pairs final. Jenny Lonie and Robyn McAnelly took on the Millerick twins in a closely fought final with the lead changing several times. After 20 ends, Jenny and Robyn led by a solitary point and in the final
burst the Millerick girls picked up two shots, to score the win 15-14. Even though this was not a win for Noosa Tewantin, the club is really proud of the effort and sportmanship of all players in this final. The Tewantin Noosa Jackpot Pairs was played on Saturday 14 May - Winners: D Hawksford and I Sanday; Runners-up: J Landy and J Lord. The jackpot was claimed by G McDonald and R Rickman.

Keeping in touch before the mist By ANITA ANDERSON NOOSA TOUCH FOOTBALL IN near perfect autumn weather conditions, last Wednesday’s touch footy games were run and won before the mist rolled in across the fields during the senior matches. Ice Angels and Running Rebels got the ball rolling with the team to beat this season, the Rebels boys, being pushed for the entire game by the Angels. Dakota, Atticus and Jacinta had fantastic games. The under-strength Lava Boys were no match this week for the magic of the Torna-
does with Huntah, Zahlee and Archie all having great games. With both teams showing off their attacking qualities, Fireballs managed to come home stronger in the second half against GSLC. Tobi, Grace and Erin all played well for their teams. In the Under 12 Division Foxy Rebels, who are proving to be the big improvers this season, took the win over GSLC (girls) who dug deep and never gave up for the entire match. Mia, Jasmin and Summer all put in mighty efforts during the match. A first half dominance by the Pink Hillbillies laid the
platform for the win over Angels with Attitude. To their credit, the Angels stepped it up in the second stanza to contain the Hillbillies attacking raids. Makayla, Lochie and Parker produced terrific performances. The match between SBSS and Knights proved to be an interesting encounter with the trialling of ‘Mandy Rules’. The jury is perhaps still out on the success of these rules but Knights still managed to take the points and the game was played with awesome spirit, well done to all players from both teams. Marcellus, Tammin and Jayden all had first rate games.

AS I write this I’m looking out over a sun-washed bay full of small boats with a craggy coastline punctuated by a massive volcano off in the distance. As views from writing desks go, it doesn’t get much better. We haven’t been to the island of Nusa Lembongan, just a 40-minute fast boat across the strait from Bali, for several years, and people warned us to expect to find paradise lost, as people on Bali do, as they sip their lattes while looking out on a trashfilled strip of black sand. And, on first impressions I’d say they are a little bit right. When our mate Chris De Aboitiz had Playgrounds Resort we used to enjoy sitting on the deck with a drink
watching the industry of the seaweed collectors as they took advantage of the dropping tide at dusk, working away under a ribbon of fairy lights. The smell of drying seaweed was part of Lembongan’s rustic charm, even though I don’t remember seeing the farms along the beach when I first went there on Claude’s yacht in 1975. Now, the weed farmers have had to relocate, partly because the increase in boat traffic was not conducive to aquaculture, but also because development along the beachfront has taken up all the room for weed drying. Five years ago I wrote on Trip Advisor: “Heading across the channel to Lembongan is like time travelling back to beautiful Bali of the past, when you needed a torch to navigate Jalan Legian at night! The difference is that while Lembongan offers the friendliness and serenity of old Bali, it also offers the comforts
and delights of new Bali. Nowhere is this more evident than at Playgrounds Resort.” From a pretty basic standard room with a dribble of cold water for a shower, and a rotting balcony rail, I’d probably have to revise my opinion of Playgrounds, which is in need of a makeover, but yes, there is far more happening along the strip and up on “Aussie Hill” than there was the last time we were here, but so far no traffic jams (still hardly any cars) and wherever you look, it is still very beautiful. And at least the development is mostly stylish and unobtrusive, following the lead of people like Noosa’s Troy and Alan Sinclair, whose Batu Karang hotel and villas is the jewel in the crown. Our French mate Clement Foquerre is still going gangbusters at Indiana Kananga, down in front of Shipwrecks surf break - for my money the best restaurant on the island - but he has now been joined
by a few other contenders, including Lemongrass in the village and the expanded Deck Cafe at Batu Karang on the hill. We had a delightful dinner at Lemongrass on arrival last night and as soon as I’ve finished this column I’ll be phoning Clement to reserve a table for tonight. Michelin-trained in France, Clement came to Bali to cook with interesting fresh produce and to surf. He soon realised that in order to surf every day, he had to train a team of locals in his kitchen skills, which he has done remarkably well. But before I finish the column or make the call, the tide is just about right and the waves are beckoning. I’m calling flexi-time. Ah, that’s better. Three generations of the Jarratt family just terrorised the pack at Playgrounds break, managing to sneak in a few under the guard of backpackers on soft boards, lids on testosterone and the usual handful of fortysomething

overweight shortboarders who want to kill someone because they can’t catch a wave on their Channel Islands five-eight. I wouldn’t say we dominated, but we got our share. On Nusa Lembongan, Lacerations and Shipwrecks both offer better waves under most conditions, but for surfing with the grandkids, it’s hard to beat Playgrounds, where the groms can watch Chinese tour groups take the big slide on the daytripper pontoons to either side of the break (the younger almost got slammed into the reef by a rogue set because he was so fixated by the slide action just a few metres away, and possibly where he would rather have been). We’ve probably got another window of tide right after lunch, so, dear readers, you might be a bit shortchanged this week, but a man has to get his priorities right.

Dolphins in form NOOSA DOLPHINS UNDER 6 Noosa Finz draw Noosa Reds THE biggest Friday night action in Noosa this week was the Under 6 Noosa Finz versus Noosa Reds playing on home ground. There was some serious action from both sides with try after try. There was great involvement from Reid and Hamish supporting their team mates with runaways tries from Jacob, Reid, Cash and Daniel. Player of the match was awarded to Reid Low. UNDER 7 Grammar Green 55 def Noosa Fins 40 The full squad of Fins had their work cut out for them this week against a firing Grammar Green barrage. It was a fast-paced non-stop cracker of a game with stunning defending by both sides hungry for the win. Unfortunately the team were without their head coach this week but 2IC Jeremy kept the boys in line. The tries were aplenty with Uli, Jackson, Myles and Rory all making it over and a few unluckily disallowed due to defence. Player of the match was awarded to Kase Dowd. UNDER 8 Noosa Reds 70 def St Andrews 30 Slick passing and rampaging runs was the order of the day as the Reds put on a few points against a brave St Andrews side, however it wasn’t all one way traffic as St Andrews exposed weaknesses in the Reds defensive system on several occasions. Ezekiel ran with ball in both hands and distributed like a seasoned pro with Will, Zac and Thomas all scoring tries from his slick offloads. Thomas scored a few of his own and also passed a beauty to Ritchie to provide open space for a great team try. Player of the match was awarded to Ezekiel. UNDER 8 Noosa Fins 75 def Caloundra Gold 5 The Fins dominated against the brave Caloundra Gold. Pressure was applied by the Fins from the get-go with epic driving and very strong contesting at the rucks to produce clean ball for this team of champions to run in 15 tries in spectacular style. Leading the try scoring was George White, once again being rewarded for his constant hard work and powerful runs from the breakdown, with a fabulous six try count. Charlie Harmer as always proved himself a class act chalking up a whopping four try count. Player of the match was awarded to Charlie Harmer. UNDER 9 Noosa Fins 16 def University 7 The Fins first game without a mentor on the field had coach Adam’s separation anxiety switch to celebration as the team showed that they had listened to his instructions at training. Ronan began the try-a-thon with his first of four after a great offload from Kane. Max stepped, swerved and weaved, leaving University floundering in his wake for six wonderful scores. Captain Finn barged through for two, while Tom and Tom beat the winning rhythm with a try each. Mali deserves special recognition for great sportsmanship - after scoring one try for Fins, he changed jerseys and “helped“ out the understaffed Uni - scoring six tries, making five try-saving tackles and winning their player of the match. Goal kicked on field By DAVID ARNOLD NOOSA PIRATES LAST Saturday 21 May saw the Noosa Pirates travel North up the Bruce Highway to take on Gympie in a must-win game for both teams. With some key players missing from the Pirates' line-up, the quality of the depth that coach Scott Christensen had available was to be severely tested. There was little to worry about as Noosa took an early lead thanks to their coach who scored after just five minutes of play. Gympie hit back hard and led by ten points to six after 18 minutes. Nathan Roon was back in the line-up after a holiday of sorts and when he thundered over the line in the 22nd minute the score was tied at ten points all. Gympie, to their credit played with newfound passion and this was rewarded when they again took the lead in the 26th minute to lead 16 points to twelve at half time. If the Pirates were going to take the points in this game changes had to be made. Utility player Aaron Locke came from the bench in the second half and scored in the 47th minute to give the Pirates a 18 to16 advantage. Two tries in ten minutes, firstly to Seaton Reid and when Scott Christensen scored his second try of the day, the Pirates looked safe leading 30 points to 16. Not to be denied Gympie scored once again to cut the lead to just eight points with ten minutes to play. Full-back Ben Hayes sealed the win for the Noosa Pirates when he scored right on the full time siren to signal a 34 point to 22 win for the Pirates.

Young Pirates give it their best shot PIRATES JUNIOR FOOTBALL UNDER 8 YELLOW UNBELIEVABLE effort from the Mighty Pirates as they took on Caboolture Gold on home territory. Brandon scoring in the first minutes of the game set the tone for what was to come with Hayden and Cooper also finding the try line on multiple occasions. Billy, Riley and Dusty moved the ball forward well along with the speedster Solomon tackling out of nowhere. Abraham Marsh was player of the match with his outstanding effort in the game. More great things to come from Abe. UNDER 9 BLUE This weekend saw the team playing at home against a much larger Caboolture side. The Pirate boys are showing great teamwork with plenty of offloads and support players backing up which is leading to some excellent tries. Welcome back to Caleb who’s been away a few weeks and slotted straight in for a player of the match. UNDER 10 BLUE Noosa Blue played Caboolture at home and it was another great day of footy on the main field. All the boys really put in a big effort for a big win over Caboolture. Stand outs for the day were Taison Haddow, Johannes Dwyer, Roy Crozier, Joshy Palmer and Cohen Robinson. Benny Graf was also a standout with his awesome dummy half work as well as Stoan Condon with his bussling runs through the middle. UNDER 10 YELLOW In a very different game, Caboolture seemed the better team on the day with our Yellow team bunching up a lot around the play and missing simple tackles. A bit more work at training is needed for these boys but there were a few standout performers with Lochlan Johnson and Harrison Jenkins doing some awesome runs. A player of the match performance from Cohyn North with his non-stop tackling and running. UNDER 11 BLUE The boys started strongly against Maroochydore and were up 12-0 after about ten minutes. A couple of tries late in the first half put Maroochydore back in the game. The second half saw the Blue trying hard but could not match Maroochydore’s intensity and they came away with the win. This was a tough loss for the boys
but these games can be character building and they will end up being resilient footballers. Player of the match was Ryan Fielding-Smith who tackled for the whole game. UNDER 11 YELLOW The Pirates played very impressive footy against Maroochydore and came away with a big 56-6 win. Great hard runs and big tackles were on display from all the boys with plenty of running tries and big line breaks. The player of the match this week went to all the boys who displayed great teamwork to achieve such a big win. UNDER 13 BLUE The Blues were keen to take on second on the ladder Beerwah on home ground. The game kicked off with early points on the board with a try to Blake in the opening minutes. A lot of time spent defending into the second half saw Beerwah put on three tries and Noosa hold out more of their advances. Noosa were quickly back in the game with the team successfully maintaining the ball at the right end towards the end of the secons half, being rewarded with a try to Kayd. With only a few minutes left on the clock Kade found the line to even the score and with Jeff’s conversion the team achieved an exciting win. Player of the match was outstanding defender Jacob. Solid games from Kayd, Kade, Bryce, Ashtyn and Saxon. UNDER 13 GOLD The boys started off a little slow to let a bustling Beerwah score first but that was the last points they scored with our boys coming out winners 16-6 in the end. The boys’ defence has really stepped up in the last two weeks and their attitude towards their defense has been commendable. Three points this week goes to Liam Fox who has really come out of his comfort zone and hit his straps with some tremendous tackling and hit ups, two points went to Jarrah Green who also has been putting his body on the line in defence and attack and one point went to Liam Langton for steering all the boys around the field. UNDER 14 GIRLS Our Noosa/Kawana girls had a tough ask against Kingaroy with only nine players this week. To their credit they kept trying hard and towards the end of the second half, we saw
some great defense and attacking play, which lead to a try by Kaitlyn and a missed conversion by Trinity. Three points went to the tenacious Trinity, who was inspiring in attack and defence, two points to Kaitlyn, with some strong bustling runs and one point to Jasmine, who continues to improve each week. Player of the match was awarded to Savannah. UNDER 16 GIRLS The Under 16s have started to get a defensive line that is straight and is working together. The score-line didn’t reflect the improvement but anyone watching from the sideline could see the difference. Previously against Nambour they would score off the first tackle, however the team made Nambour work hard for their tries. Player of the match was awarded to captain Tahlia. UNDER 16 GOLD Noosa played last year’s grand finalists Beerwah Bulldogs at home this week. The first half was an arm wrestle but both sides were lacking intensity. With some wise words from coach Russ at half time, the boys came out firing in the second half. Line defence was outstanding with a never say die attitude. Noosa were too classy in the end scoring some well constructed tries to take the win 24-16. Player of the Match went to Will Todd who had some great hit ups and offloads. The boys have now won four of their five matches and are now sitting outright second on the ladder. UNDER 18 GIRLS The Under 18s were decimated with injury and illness. A massive effort from Kimberley, the girl from Bundy, to came down and supported her team mates even though she is out injured. The team of eight started slowly giving away a lead but picked up the play half way through the first half. An emotional and heartfelt half time speech by courageous captain Gabbie inspired the girls to lift in the second half and play to their potential. Lily, filling in for the 18s played a good game at dummy half. Ella made some great hits in defence before going off injured. Gabbie picked up player of the match and the three points ahead of Taela the weapon who got the two points. Once again Tenielle was solid in attack and defense and provided some fantastic kick offs to turn the possession over and she received the one point. noosatoday.com.au

FOR our volunteer lifesavers, the flags are down for another season. However, for the true dedicated clubby, the winter months will see them continue to serve the community in which they live. In this modern era of lifesaving, the role of our surf clubs within our place of abode becomes more involved. One of the reasons is because of the winter sports and the various categories of Iron Man competition that are open to the sporting fraternity, is on the increase. Add to this you have the increasing involvement of our business arm the Surf Clubs, providing workers and, in some cases,
the facilities necessary to help make these ventures a success. This is done with pleasure as the reason is twofold. First and most important, it gives our clubs the opportunity to say thanks to our locals for their support during the lean years. Above all, it gives lifesaving the opportunity to consolidate our standing within the local world of tourism. All these events be they sporting, musical, theatre, food and wine, not only bring the people but they also provide our business houses with that most important of all things, publicity. In keeping with this, the Surf Club on Noosa's Main Beach, last week stepped in to support the Food and Wine Festival by making some facilities available to the organisers
plus providing manual help when needed. Club manager Anton Mogg said, “We were only too happy to help in any way we could as we are more determined than ever to increase our involvement, when possible, in local events. The feedback regarding the tepee tents on the beach front for the Food and Wine Festival, was very positive indeed. Well done to all.” From the sporting side of things, Noosa water safety co-ordinator Joe Cirillo said, ‘’The recent Ultra Iron Man event was well covered. Not only did we have our local lifesavers giving time and commitment to provide patrols on water, but also paddlers from all over the world. A lot of people were not aware we had support teams from places like
France, Italy and Spain just to name a few.’’ This weekend will once again see our winter commitment continue with IRB patrols being provided for the Saturday Noosa Winter Swim. This will see a program of four swims over various distances; a 3.8kl, 2kl, 1kl and 500m, with a time break in between. These will be covered by patrols provided by Mudjimba, Sunshine Beach and Noosa surf clubs. “Once again our winter clubbies are showing a total 110 per cent commitment to our community,” Cirillo said. On Sunday, activities will continue with bike and running events being contested over endurance distances. At season's end, it is only right that we say a big thank you to support groups that make contributions to our lifesavers during the summer.
There are quite a few, but two who usually go unnoticed are our local paramedics, whose prompt response time to emergencies callouts, is second to none, and also to Len Tyler and his team at Noosa Community Radio 101.3 FM. Len and his crew help to keep the community informed on what our local lifesavers are doing, patrol wise and also in competition. Both teams take a bow. The final stats regarding all patrol activities for our three clubs, Noosa, Sunshine and Peregian have yet to be finalised. One set in particular will be eagerly awaited. Spinal injuries. State wide spinals have unfortunately, in the last four years increased, going from 99 to 160. These figures tell us that we must pull out all stops in our endeavor to further educate the public regarding safe surfing.
Perfect conditions for fishing By JACK MANGROVE WITH the great conditions we have been having, it’s hard to leave the boat sitting in the shed. Out the front, tuna are still in good numbers. Coral trout are still plentiful around Sunshine Reef as well as sweetlip and squire. Fishing hard to the bottom is the real key when it comes to targeting coral trout, so the sinker just above the hook is the key, Micro Jigging has also been the way to attract a nice reef fish, give the new Colt Sniper Range from Shimano a go, these jigs come in a range of colours and weights and are perfect for the shallower reefs. Snapper are starting to come on the chew, with the majority being caught on North Reef, the pilchard floater method has been the most productive, pearl perch, Maori cod, sweetlip and jewies have also been getting in on the action with some outstanding fish boated over the past week. Whiting have been in good numbers around the Dog Beach and Frying Pan, small poppers and live nippers have proven really suc-
cessful in landing the bigger fish. Early morning starts up in the Tewantin Ski Run has proved to be worthwhile for trevally, bream and flathead. And with so many prawns in the river, a lot of the fish have been falling victim to a slow rolled Zerek Hot Legs live shrimp. Further up river at the mouth of the lakes has
been the spot to be for some good-sized school jew, live baits and soft plastic paddle vibe lures like the Thumper Tails from Samaki lures have been coming up with the goods. Casting around the snags up between the lakes has seen the odd good jacks caught over the past week. Suspending Hardbody lures like the Live Minnows from River2sea have been perfect when targeting jacks. The Noosa Northshore Beaches have been fishing particularly well, with whiting, bream, dart and flathead out of the first cutting and towards the mouth, worms, pippies and small pillies have proven the best baits for them. Tailor Jew and larger flathead have been caught between Teewah and Double Island. The rocks in the national park have been good for squire and sweetlip, with some lucky anglers doing battle with tuna and smaller mackerel. Masters take a dip, bow NOOSA Masters Swimming Club hosted the 16th annual swim carnival at the Noosa Aquatic Centre on Saturday 14 May. The event attracted a record number of participants with 185 swimmers from 25 clubs competing in the carnival. Twelve metropolitan Brisbane clubs and 13 regional Queensland clubs from as far as Gladstone, Rockhampton, Maryborough, Hervey Bay and Toowoomba all took part in the meet.
Swimmers varied in ages from 21-year-old Tara Anderson from Hervey Bay to 91-years-young George Stewart, representing Sunshine Coast Masters. Ten events were contested for trophies, most winners determined by closest to their nominated time. A most successful day headed by meet director Adrian Wilson, meet manager Ian Tucker and referee Rob Lucas.
