By MONIQUE KUZEFF WODONGA Council’s decision to shut the doors of the Wodonga pound and award Albury-based Canine Country Kennels a tender to take over its operation has presented both pros and cons.

While the decision to move pound operations to Albury would release the ranger from pet care and enable more street patrolling in problematic areas, it could also mean the end of Wodonga Dog Rescue (WDR).

For almost four years, WDR has been volunteering alongside Wodonga Council to help care for and rehome impounded dogs providing them with relief, exercise and personal care as well as saving the council many hours of ranger time.

WDR co-ordinator Peta McRae said that while sheltering the dogs in Albury would take some pressure off the group, they would no longer have a place to operate.

“If they take dogs over to Albury it would take a bit of weight off because every dog that comes into the pound we rescue,” Ms McRae said.

“But if they do close the pound here, they won’t let us use it at all and instead let it sit for the next five years.

“It’s a big kick in the face because we have WDR volunteers working five days a week and the council has just spent like $25,000 to upgrade the building.”

According to the council, the 26 pens, facilities and surfaces of the upgraded building in which Wodonga Pound operated are only beneficial for short-term stays and the pound would now only be available in times of emergency.

The council would still continue to manage its pound service to collect fines and registration fees and enable rangers to catch strays, return animals and deal with dangerous dogs and restricted breeds.

Canine Country Kennels, with a rehome rate between 70 to 80 per cent, has run the Albury Pound for almost 15 years and worked with rescue organisations and foster carers.

Ms McRae said WDR was willing to take over the current Wodonga

of dollars and we’ve bought bedding, food and had stuff donated.”

Ms McRae said local businesses, schools and disability groups are going to miss out too.

“We are spending $4000 on vets if not more and we shop at Petstock,

pound complex and maintain it.

“We are prepared to look after the pound and pay whatever we have to, we’ll just have to scale it down to a number of dogs,” she said.

“We’ve volunteered our services, we’ve saved the council thousands

“Children, students and disability groups are going to miss out on animal interaction that the group enables.

“We are not going to be doing that anymore if we don’t have a rescue.”

Youth on the Indi agenda

By MONIQUE KUZEFF WHAT do young people of Indi need and want? This was a student’s question to the five Indi candidates who participated in the INDialogue forum held on Wednesday.

First to answer on the topic was sitting Indi MP Cathy McGowan who believed that young people must be recognised and acknowledged for their community contributions.

“I believe young people need to be given the opportunities to be able to contribute to the community,” Ms McGowan said.

“Accessibility to services, to jobs, to participation, respect for their views and an opportunity to participate, and we haven’t had it yet. As a 22-year-old who was elected to council at age 18, Labor candidate Eric Kerr remarked “who am I to tell the young people of Indi what they want”.

He said in regard to politics, young people would like to see a “fresh debate” in politics and one led by “leadership, compassion and strong values”.

“Young people in Indi want politicians who encourage them into the debate, who show leadership and real compassion and who encourage them to be the best that they can be,”

Mr Kerr said. Liberal candidate and former Indi MP Sophie Mirabella believed that young people should not be generalised because they are very diverse.

“In Indi you’ve got kids growing up on farms, kids who have left to go off to uni, you’ve got kids unemployed and struggling who have fallen through the cracks,” Ms Mirabella said.

“If there is a limitation being asked in the question what do young people want? Hope and freedom.

“Hope that the country they live in is going to become a better place, hope that they will be able to fulfil their full potential in areas of education and professionalism with their dreams and ambitions.

“It’s that freedom to choose how to live their lives, the freedom to create a life and occupation that they want to live and it’s basically those things that have driven people for a very long time.”

Nationals candidate Marty Corboy said youth “just want a good start” and a “fair go”, and Greens candidate Jenny O’Connor believed they would like to see “communitybased leadership” from a politician who would support the vulnerable and invest in “social welfare, community development and education”.

By MONIQUE KUZEFF FOUR Border Rotary Clubs have partnered together to host a fund-raising event on Saturday 28 May to raise funds to support the next Burrumbuttock hay runners.

The collaborative effort of the Rotary clubs of Albury Wodonga Sunrise, Belvoir Wodonga, Wodonga Central and Wodonga West will see an evening of entertainment and auctioning of donated items from local businesses and community members.

Rodney Vincent, Sharon BilstonByrne and John Walker have organised the evening’s entertainment and are performing free of charge with additional performances from multicultural groups.

Wodonga Central club secretary Marg Crisp said fund-raising events like this were important for the continuation

of the Burrumbuttock hay runs.

“Fund-raising events and donations are what are going to keep them going,” Ms Crisp said.

“Hopefully farmers will have their own crops by spring but they still need hay now and the opportunity to rebuild.”

Ms Crisp said she hoped the event would raise between $15,000 to $20,000.

“We’ve got many generously donated items to auction so hopefully they will bring in a lot of fund-raising.

“We have had a wonderful donation from BP Australia in terms of some support with petrol for the hay run truckies.”

Ms Crisp said the work of the hay runners and other individuals and groups involved reflected the efforts of communities across Australia to help one another out.

“I think it’s really great in terms of re-

flecting that people in Australia support other people in communities when they are doing it hard.

“All the Rotary clubs thought this was something we could support as a group and it was something that stood out for us this year.”

Ms Crisp encouraged Border locals to purchase a ticket and come along for a “fun and eventful night”.

“See what’s happening in our community to support those doing it tough in other communities.

“Anyone is welcome to attend but they will need to hurry as tickets are selling fast.”

Political wedlock delivers pollution baby

By MONIQUE KUZEFF THE fossil fuel industry has contributed $3.7 million in donations to major political parties over the past three years, and in return are to receive $7.7 billion in subsidies, according to a notfor-profit climate change movement group 350.org.

Wodonga Albury Toward Climate Health (WATCH) staged a performance outside MP Sussan Ley’s office in Albury to convey this message in the form of a mock wedding held on Friday afternoon.

The mock wedding was a part of Pollution Free Politics nationwide campaign aimed at abolishing the association between Australia’s parliament and fossil fuel corporations.

The wedding was one of 40 actions being staged around the country last week that aimed to call on candidates to sign the Pollution Free Politics Pledge

and support the ban on donation and subsidiaries deals between parties and polluters.

Conducted by St Matthews Anglican Church’s Father Peter McLeod Miller, the wedding ceremony included the bride dressed in traditional white with real coal jewellery and a groom who both delivered unusual and mocking vows to each other.

WATCH spokesperson Lauriston Muirhead believed what is going on between the fossil fuel corporations and political parties is a “corruption of the democratic process�. “We thought a bit of humour and a bit of theatre would help people understand, particularly the politicians, who are potentially swayed by the donations of the fossil fuel companies. “We’ve often tried to talk to people about the science, and people still seem to sit on the fence so what we are trying to

do is pull at the heart strings. “For every dollar donated to the major parties over the past three years, the fossil fuel industry will receive over $2000 in return from our politicians this year.�

According to Mr Muirhead, climate change was already evident in mid-1970s and basic science showed that it has worsened over the years. “The basic science says there is a problem and we are the main cause of that problem by increasing Co2 in the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels. “We know from air bubble trapped in the Antarctic and we’ve got a fantastic library of the last 800,000 years of atmospheres which we have drilled down into. “The days of fuel-fired power, oil and gas are over and the quicker we shut down these corporations, the better.�

FIVE Indi candidates were questioned by Border locals and students on diverse topics at a public ‘INDialogue’ forum held at Latrobe University on Wednesday afternoon, and as expected in politics, the theatre experienced some hot flushes.

Hosted by a student run Social Work Club, the forum aimed to engage the community in political conversation on topics affecting Indi and Australia.

In attendance were Cathy McGowan (Independent), Sophie Mirabella (Liberal), Marty Corby (Nationals), Eric Kerr (Labor) and Jenny O’Connor (Greens) who were asked to offer their opinions on topics including climate change, marriage inequality, refugees, North East agriculture, education, and jobs and employment.

With marriage inequality and climate change being the university’s two chosen issues to address, Indi’s sitting member Cathy McGowan and Labor candidate Eric Kerr were pleased to open the forum with a strong stance in support of same-sex marriage.

Greens candidate Jenny O’Connor made herself clear that she believed same-sex marriage should not be put to a referendum, and Liberal candidate Sophie Mirabella supported a plebiscite saying people should have the power to make the decision.

Counting on the country

By MONIQUE KUZEFF INDI’S Australian Country Party (ACP) candidate Julian Fidge feels “optimistic” about the upcoming election saying that he is sure that he will get great support from country voters.

As a sheep and cattle farmer and general practitioner in Wangaratta, Fidge said he got involved in politics because he wanted to genuinely represent country people in Indi.

Fidge formerly stood for local council but said it became clear to him that council was not interested in representing the people in his community.

“The country party then approached me and asked if I’d like to stand as a candidate for them - I felt our policies were very closely aligned so I went for it,” Fidge said.

The 53-year-old’s party is focused on various policies in areas surrounding agriculture, industry, taxation, water and national security.

“We have good policies and provide intellectual leadership that Liberal and Labor don’t offer,” he said.

“Those major parties are ideologically-based while the ACP is policy-based working towards good outcomes for people and is about making Australia work better for all Australians.”

Fidge said he would like to see the Federal Government stop “ripping off country people”.

“Country people make up about one-third of the population in Australia and we contribute more than our fair share of taxes.

“When it comes to returning money for infrastructure, the country people only get about 10 per cent of the expenditure and one-third of our money back.

“That’s why we have poor infrastructure, dams, irrigation and facilities, and our poor railway lines are just a joke.”

“The National Party wants to tax people at 32 per cent at the get-go but we want to raise the taxfree threshold.

“We don’t want seasonal workers having to pay unless they earn $60,000 because it’s really really hard work to keep this sector going.”

Fidge is also prepared to work towards completely transitioning Australia towards defence manufacturing.

“I want to see a stable defence industry so that we are building our own ships, four-wheel drives, submarines and defence equipment.”

Youthful approach to politics

By MONIQUE KUZEFF FOR Indi’s 22-year-old Labor candidate Eric Kerr, there was no “one big issue” that needed to be urgently addressed in his electorate but rather numerous issues affecting the different corners of Indi.

Across the coming weeks of election campaigning, Mr Kerr said he would be focusing on marriage equality, fibre to the home NBN, and school funding.

Since being elected on to the Wodonga Council at age 18, Mr Kerr has been helping resolve issues within his community.

He said he chose to become the Indi candidate because he wanted to make changes on a larger scale and to offer a youthful approach in politics.

“Half the reason why I’m doing what I’m doing is because I’ve been frustrated and stressed about certain issues and wanted to do something about them,” Mr Kerr said.

“I also felt I could be a great representative for the younger population because some of the older politicians really fail at that.

“I love helping and talking with people to create outcomes, so I took the chance and put my hand up.”

Same-sex marriage is an issue close to his heart. As a son of two mothers, Mr Kerr is astounded that the debate surrounding marriage equality has not already been settled.

“Plebiscite around samesex marriage is a big issue for me, and I’ve been able to take a leadership role in the community on same sex marriage coming from my background.

Mr Kerr said he would campaign for a free vote to be held on marriage equality before the year ends.

“If I were elected a member for the government as a leading role I’d make sure that was never a reality in Australia and this issue is a simple change that could impact lives so greatly on a personal level.”

Mr Kerr said he would also be talking about his vision to replace the current NBN status with Labor’s original NBN fibre to the home for faster speed internet that could better support businesses and schools.

“Labor’s original NBN policy was the fibre to the home, and this was supposed to take us in to world class internet speeds but under the current fibre to the node model, it’s just getting worst because it’s outdated,” he said.

“It’s about enabling businesses to have high speed internet and people being able to do education online.

“Labor wants to revert to the original vision of NBN although it may take longer to implement.”

When it comes to education, Mr Kerr said he would be meeting with many local schools to talk about his policy on education over the next few weeks.

“We will be trying to meet with as many local schools as we can as a priority and try to explain our policy.

“We want to bring back Gonski to ensure that every individual student receives the right resources to meet their needs. We need to finish the work that we started.”

Mr Kerr advised voters not to get caught up in the “CathySophie-Marty narrative” and instead to consider other candidates' policies and values.

“There are several candidates for you to talk to and consider, so please do your research and figure out who represents you the best.

“We (Labor) are the underdogs in this election. We haven’t won the seat in 70 years and haven’t had a chance to prove ourselves.”

Movement in balance

By MONIQUE KUZEFF FOR the past 25 years, student of the 28th Grandmaster Chen of Dayan Qigong form Tai Chi Helen Jobson, 69, has been commuting from Corowa to the Border once every week to deliver Tai Chi classes to her dedicated students.

Having practiced and studied Tai Chi at the Australia Academy of Tai Chi (AATC) in Sydney, Helen realised her passion for the art after she was diagnosed with a form of chronic fatigue.

The doctor recommended two particular forms of exercises to relieve her condition - Yoga and Tai Chi. “I tried Yoga and didn’t like it and then I tried Tai Chi and my teacher said it would take some time so I should stick with it,” Helen said.

“After six months I knew I’d be doing it for the rest of my life.”

Tai Chi is a gentle form of martial arts and has many benefits towards balance, asthma, arthritis, osteoporosis and mental state, Helen said.

Having recently gone through intricate cochlear implant surgery, Helen said Tai Chi has worked wonders for her internal and mental health.

“Tai Chi works on all systems of the body even though it looks gentle,” she said.

“It builds on your cardiovascular system, your respiratory system, your skeletal system and improves your health and immune system.”

Helen trained at the AATC for two years where she learnt many form of Tai Chi.

“At the AATC I learnt lots of different forms and the last on I learnt was the Dayan, which mimics the movements of the wild goose.

“Dayan is the physiotherapy side of traditional Chinese Medicine.

“We used to train in class focusing on different sections every session and twice a month we’d go to Sydney and do training with a Grandmaster Gary.”

Last year, Helen spent two weeks in China training with Grandmaster Chen, 28th line holder of the Dayan Qigong form.

“It was fantastic! I’d go again tomorrow if I had the money,” she said.

“Even though he is 92 he could’ve been 70 with the condition of his body, his muscles are still very strong, he is healthy and he stood upright.

“His mother, who passed away at age 105, was the 27th Grandmaster before him and she was still teaching at 105.

Tai Chi must be doing something right.”

Recently, David was awarded the ACV Bovine Practitioner 2016 after being nominated by two of his past employees where he was cited as having positively influenced veterinary undergraduates, new graduates, as well as his local producers and community.

His philosophy of “see one, do one, teach one” is practically implemented with his new grads, giving them support in their early careers.

His simple question of “are you happy with your calves this year?” often leads to further veterinary investigation.

Notably, he has significantly contributed to the understanding of balanitis where his personal research has been recognised by the McKinnon project.

Dave’s avid interests in the cattle industry and medicine have been passed on to students and graduates alike.

Dave said he felt privileged to have worked in the Upper Murray over the past 36 years, 26 of them being in Walwa.

“Appreciation of the beauty and diversity of the region has never worn off,” Dave said.

“I find it amazing that the Walwa practice has not only survived, but grown.

“I owe much of the financial survival to our office manager, Suzie Vinge, who puts in long hours through sheer dedication.” Dave said it had been a relief not to have to worry about business tasks and to be able to focus on being a vet instead.

“Mixed rural veterinary practice is demanding in a logistical and organisational sense, with the phone constantly ringing and the day in constant flux.

“Suzie has done a fantastic job over the past 12 years.”

We have to get them while they’re young that while many kids enjoy riding not all of them want to compete in organised race events.

The ability of a parent to take their child into our beautiful Australian bush and teach them the skill to control a motorcycle equips them with the motor skills and life skills to be much safer car and motorcycle riders when the time comes to get a licence.

I acknowledge that there is a small risk involved but there is a small risk in any sporting endeavour and I believe the positives far out way the negatives!

Children riding a motorcycle is also a pastime that cannot be done without parental involvement and the benefits to the family group and the child’s social development cannot be underestimated either.

Locally, motocross season

is in full swing although, unfortunately, Albury-Wodonga had to postpone its round of the Wannabrook MX series due to the heavens opening up on race day.

That was such a shame because the new track looks fantastic and is a credit to the hard working club members.

On the road racing scene, Chas Herns has been running some very successful ride days down at the rider training track at the logic centre at Barnawartha.

On the world stage, Moto GP has certainly been interesting with some great racing and plenty of dramas as riders and teams try to get the best out of the new rules and tyres.

There is also more drama and intrigue than an American soap opera as riders switch teams and manufacturers.

As we head into winter and the end of financial year sales, I hope everyone keeps safe and warm and enjoys their bikes.

I don’t normally get caught up in the politics and lobbying that occurs, preferring to just ride and enjoy, but recently one member of the Albury Wodonga motorcycle community has been causing quite a stir with his petitioning for junior recreational licences.

This is a cause I strongly believe in and having grown up riding and enjoying motorcycles and seeing first-hand the benefits and life skills this brings to our children, I would strongly urge everyone to get behind Craig Martin and the Facebook site Rec Licence For Kids.

My reasoning for supporting this cause is simple.

I have long seen and admired the skill young people develop while riding and racing motorcycles and know

Pub rockers

By MONIQUE KUZEFF THEY’VE performed across the globe in cities including San Francisco, Paris, Rome, Nashville, New York, Fiji and New Zealand and now one of our most loved Aussie rock bands are coming to Albury’s Kinross Woolshed on 12 June to deliver another engaging performance.

You’ll be pumping your fists, nodding your head and rocking out to some of the most authentic Australian pub rock when the Choirboys blow in town.

Formed in 1976, the Choirboys have experienced hit records and full houses, and toured with big names such as Deep Purple and Bon Jovi while living their rock 'n’ roll dream.

They’ve enjoyed huge success in the '80s with songs such as Run To Paradise and Boys Will Be Boys, and recently they celebrated their 40th anniversary and are marking the occasion with their Australian tour.

Choirboys front man Mark Gable said before the band was formed, it was just a bunch of guys goofing around the pubs.

“Pub rock was invented in Australia and our music was born out of the pub,” Mr Gable said.

“When it comes to music, pub rock was aggressive and we hit the drums and guitars hard.”

Mr Gable said 30 years down the track of his career so much has happened and yet nothing has changed.

“We are older and wiser, we love playing the same pub rock that we did back then and most of all we are having the time of our lives doing it.”

After 40 years, Choirboys are still one of the best live acts in the country.

The band is excited about coming to Albury to put on a gig at the Kinross, saying that Border locals can expect “psychosis, nut bar stuff and anything that could happen will happen”.

“I’m not interested in conformity and I’m crazier now than I have ever been,” Mr Gable said.

Having been to Albury just six months ago, Mr Gable said

he looked forward to indulging in the “fantastic food culture” the regional city has.

“I’m looking forward to having Indian food, going to Coles and stocking up on roasted and salted macadamias and green grapes.

“Dean Street has so many restaurants and they’re all cool, I can’t wait to have breakfast there.”

He said the Border has never disappointed and the band always has a good time when they are in town.

“We’ve had so much find there, people have always been so much fun and receptive of rock 'n’ roll.”

DEMAND for space has seen the weekly median rent for large family homes rise Victoria-wide in the 12 months to 31 March.

New REIV data shows four-bedroom homes recorded the highest rental growth of all property types in regional Victoria, up 2.9 per cent over the year to a weekly median rent of $360 - $10 a week more than the same period last year.

Torquay recorded the state’s largest rental increase for four-bedroom homes with the weekly median rent rising 8 per cent over the year to $500, up from $463 in March 2015.

Annual rental growth for fourbedroom homes was also seen in Drouin, up 6.9 per cent to a weekly median rent of $350; Warragul, up 5.9 per cent to $360 a week; Wodonga, up 5.7 per cent to $370; and Gisborne, up 5.5 per cent to $480.

While rents for many other property types were relatively stable over the year, multiple regional towns also experienced significant rental growth for three-bedroom homes.

The coastal town of Jan Juc was the state’s strongest performer for this property type, with the weekly

City were too strong for Diamonds winning 3-1 with goals to McIntosh, Mathews and Wilson-

Cooper. The only scoring shot for Diamonds came in the 12th minute through Goldsworthy.

In other results, Myrtleford defeated Wangaratta 3-2 while Cobram Roar defeated Boomers 4-3 and St Patricks were too strong for Albury Hotspurs 5-1. Albury United and Melrose had the byes.

Bragging rights for Albury Wodonga in WorkSafe clash ALMOST 400 players from four leagues have taken part in this year’s WorkSafe AFL North East Border Junior Carnival, held at Wangaratta on Sunday with Albury Wodonga winning the day.

The four competing leagues, Albury Wodonga, Wangaratta, Tallangatta and Seymour Junior Football Leagues accompanied teams from the Benalla/

Mansfield area and competed in both under 14 and under 16s.

In total, 14 teams played 20 games and provided representative opportunities for 380 young boys and 10 male and female umpires.

Adding to the experience again this year, an under Final Series was played as opposed to the Round Robin se-

ries of previous seasons with Albury Wodonga JFL ultimately successful in an enthralling battle with Benalla/ Mansfield during the Under 14s match.

It was AWJFL again who finished on top in the under 16s with Albury Red emerging victor.

Wodonga and Wangaratta Junior Football Leagues respectively were awarded Players of the Carnivals.

Accompanying the 400 participants was an estimated 2000 spectators, comprising parents, siblings and recruiters identifying the best local talent for pathway programs.

Organisers were again delighted

with the manner in which the carnival was supported, the conduct of players, their team management and coaches as well as spectators.

Planning for 2017 will begin shortly with leagues contributing to the annual review where suggested inclusions are submitted for consideration.
