“Bystander behaviour is really important and trying to develop to build capacity in the community to have the courage to say - and it doesn’t have to be aggressive - ‘It’s not alright to say that around here’,” Ms Erich said.

“You can kind-of say as a collective, ‘Our club doesn’t support that’, or ‘We don’t talk to each other like that around here’.”

She said the message of acceptance and inclusion was spreading, with junior football and netball clubs featured at this year’s Pride Cup for the first time - and 11 organisations providing about $50,000 in kind.

Both Mr McCormick and Ms Erich said they would have liked a better attendance at the forum from football teams, but Mr McCormick said he hoped the teams that were in attendance would help spread the word to other clubs, players, and spectators.

THREE years on from the first Pride Cup match in Yarra Glen, Yarra Ranges AFL general manager Luke McCormick thinks attitudes towards the LGBTI community are shifting in players and spectators alike.

Mr McCormick joined speakers including St Kilda Football Club CEO Matt Finnis, Yarra Glen footballer Jason Ball and Stand Up Events’ Angie Greene for a forum about addressing homophobia in sport on Wednesday 11 May. The meeting saw about 40 people representing senior football clubs from around the Yarra Ranges discuss the next steps for spreading the message of inclusion for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) community in sport.

One of these steps, Mr McCormick said, was having discussions with club members with “old attitudes and ideals” - though he said an attitude change had already begun for club members and spectators.

“Things are still happening - we’ve still got people doing the wrong thing and crossing the line, in relation to abuse and inappropriate comments, which is the thing that hurts people the most,” he said.

“Realistically, the inappropriate comments really do hurt people and turn people away.

“What’s happening is people are calling those people out, and that’s the change that’s already begun - in the past, people would just sit by and let those things happen.”

He said that footy club changerooms across the Yarra Ranges would feature posters designed by the Yarra Ranges Council and the Rainbow Network with pictures from the Pride Cup, emblazoned with “We barrack for equality” and “We stand for equality”.

On a national level, Mr McCormick said that St Kilda and the Sydney Swans would face off in an AFL pride match in August - a direct result of the Pride Cup in Yarra Glen.

“It’s massive,” he said.

“That game is off the back of our Pride Cup game, and they’re trying to basically spread the message we’ve begun in Yarra Ranges to an AFL round.”

Speedster’s car goes far

A BAYSWATER man will front court to answer multiple charges, after Warburton police clocked his car speeding at more than 50km/h over the speed limit in Gladysdale.

Warburton police officers clocked the white Holden ute travelling at 116km/h in a 60km zone on Yarra JunctionNoojee Road in Gladysdale on Tuesday 17 May. Due to the driver’s high speed, police were unable to give chase, but Leading Senior Constable Kevin Bishop said investigations led police to a North Bayswater address on Thursday 19 May. Police then interviewed a 19-year-old man, and impounded the car for 30 days.

The man will be charged on summons for speeding and traffic offences, and Leading Sen Const Bishop said the man faced losing his licence “for a substantial period of time”.

THE team tasked with putting together a master plan for the Warburton Mountain Bike Hub project met Warburton’s businesses last week.

The key message for the business community was that the success of the project which aims to put Warburton on the map as a world-class cycling destination must deliver real benefits for the business community.

Yarra Ranges Council has commissioned Canberra-based firm Cox Architecture to design the project and produce a master plan which they can use to attract funding.

Senior architect Tony Rowley leads the team which includes experts in cycle recreation, track design and events.

He said it was their fourth visit to the area and that they were on a factfinding mission which involved get-

ting out into the bush, and speaking with the various land managers and stakeholders.

“The bottom line for this project is that to be a success the town needs to have an increase in commerce happening that’s directly from the product we provide,” Mr Rowley said.

He said it was a relationship that needed to be ongoing.

“It’s not enough to design a great track, or great products, local business has to respond in a way that captures that.”

He said while the project was predominantly about trails, there was an obvious need to make that interactive with the town.

That included, he said, riders being able to identify bike friendly places and a more accessible link from the existing rail trail to the town.

He said there were opportunities for businesses to leverage off the work Yarra Ranges Council had done in Thomas Crescent (along the Yarra River).

“Look out your back door and look at the opportunities there,” he said.

Linking the rail trail and the town with the O’Shannassy Aquaduct Trail and exploring how the old tramways might be used were other opportunities that would extend the trails network and encourage cycling visitors to stay more than a day.

Mr Rowley said the tramways were a unique feature of the area which, because of the gentle gradients, could offer families with younger children a way to dip into the mountain bike experience.

“I have walked on a couple of them today, and I’ve not seen tramways like this anywhere else,” he said.

They identified two major challenges as parking and the steep terrain, in terms of accessing the Aquaduct Trail.

Other issues raised by community and business representatives were the ongoing sustainability of the trails once the project was up and running, and shared use of the trails and bushland by walkers and horseriders.

Mr Rowley said while maintenance was not part of their brief, it was something that had to be factored in to any design.

“To design something that looks good for a week or so and then crumbles would be a failure on our part,” he said.

He said walkers and equestrians were significant user groups and flagged that there would need to be more consultation with those groups.

Aldridges keep streets clean

The daily task of walking their dog when they first moved to Warburton in 2004 has morphed into a community service that has seen the tracks along the Yarra River transformed from rubbish-strewn to rubbish-free.

The couple, in their early seventies, said when they first moved to the town they were building a house, and although they didn’t have a lot of spare time, they started what had become a daily ritual.

“We had an old dog that we walked every day, and we took a plastic bag for the dog and an extra rubbish bag to put a few cans and bottles in,” Ruth said.

Having been a guide at Healesville Sanctuary, Ruth knew of the effect of rubbish on platypus.

“It distressed me to see all this rubbish that was going to end up in the river if something wasn’t done,” she said.

When the house was finished, Ben said they started to become a bit more professional, walking every day and attracting the support of the Warburton Advancement League and the Warburton Bendigo Community Bank.

Both organisations showed recognition of the important role the community-minded couple is playing in keeping the township clean and protecting the river by providing funds for trolleys, gloves and tongs.

“When our picker-upers wear out, they replace them,” Ben said, adding that they appreciated the recognition that the community showed for their efforts - including a complimentary cup of coffee at the local bakery each morning.

They take the time to stop and chat with regular walkers and visitors, and say they have met some wonderful people over the 10 or so years they have been on the job.

The greatest reward, however, is seeing the decrease in rubbish, and dog droppings, since they started.

Ben and Ruth believe that by being seen regularly picking up the rubbish that others drop, people are now becoming more responsible about disposing of their own rubbish.

It’s a theory that Yarra Ranges O’Shannassy Ward representative, Cr Jim Child, says is spot on.

“They send a message,” he said.

“You will see Ben having a conversation with young people along the trail, and I think a lot of it is about educating people ... ‘this belongs to you and it’s so easy to look after’,” he said.

Cr Child said what the couple did each day in keeping Warburton’s main street clean and reporting on graffiti that needs to be dealt with, was an enormous contribution to the community they clearly loved.

“They are absolutely magnificent people,” he said.

“We would be lost without them.”

AS ANOTHER financial year comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on all that we have achieved in 12 months as an animal welfare agency.

Contrary to common perception, we are not just the local pound in Cold-

stream.

Each and every day of the year we support people and animals in need that come through our doors.

Animal Aid is not a small organisation; nor are we the biggest.

In the last 12 months we have provided the highest level of care to 6,025 stray, lost, abandoned, seized or surrendered animals.

As an open door shelter we never turn away an animal or person in need.

We will do everything in our power to reunite an animal with its rightful owner or assist an animal to be ready

for adoption into a safe and loving home.

We do this regardless of financial or space constraints that may exist at the time.

We’re often asked how someone could surrender their pet.

There are many reasons. The owner may be ill or elderly and can no longer care for their pet; the animal may be at risk from harm by another person; they may be relocating interstate or overseas, be homeless or have financial pressures, or the pet may have poor social behaviour.

Stalls include plants and seedlings, arts and crafts, bric-a-brac, antiques, jams and chutneys and a sausage sizzle run by the local CFA with all proceeds going back into local community projects. Pest bailed to avoid jail

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A HEALESVILLE “serial pest” who has been charged over multiple offences including petrol drive-offs, car theft, dangerous driving and excessive speeding has been granted bail.

Jake Macey, 22, faced Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 16 May after being arrested in Pakenham over an alleged petrol drive-off in an unregistered car that morning.

Police told the court that Macey, who made admissions, was on bail at

the time over four police briefs to be heard at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court in September and October.

The Ringwood matters included theft of a car, number plates and petrol around the Healesville, Lilydale and Yarra Junction areas, as well as speeding and failing to obey police.

Magistrate Barry Schultz was told on 16 May that there were a further three matters involving failing to appear on bail, driving and theft charges still to be processed by police.

Mr Schultz said it would not be fair to keep Macey in custody for months, given he was unlikely to receive more than a community-corrections order.

“It seems to me he’s 22 years old and being a serial pest as much as anything else.

“It would be contrary to the interests of justice to have him in custody till (September and October).

“It’s a matter of looking at the conditions of bail.”

As part of his bail, Macey was or-

dered to live with a close relative in Healesville, required to report to police three times a week and was subject to a night curfew.

Macey asked Mr Schultz if the curfew applied to weekends.

Mr Schultz replied: “Absolutely it does. You may not like that but you have got a choice of remaining in custody if you wish.

“This is the last time he’ll get bail.

Given the series of offending... he’s got to realise it’s got to stop.”

Macey was allowed to continue driving as part of his bail conditions, in order to get to his pallet-packing job.

“Public transport in Healesville not flash,” Mr Schultz noted.

Healesville police Sergeant Stewart Thomson said the Yarra Valley offences dated back to mid-to-late April, and that Macey was due to appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 13 September.

Macey was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 9 June.

Helpful new friends found in the blackberries

By KATH GANNAWAY A NEED to get a few blackberries under control has introduced Yarra Junction resident Fred Hawker to a group of young people who took on the job ... and much more.

Fred, a returned serviceman and Upper Yarra RSL member, has been staunchly independent all his life, but at nearly 90, and with a big garden to look after, he admits that keeping the garden in check is a challenge.

He was both happy and amazed, he said, to see members of Upper Yarra Secondary College’s Year 9 and 10 Leadership Group on his doorstep on Wednesday (18 May) with garden tools, gloves and a ‘can do’ attitude to match.

The school has formed a partnership with Upper Yarra RSL to run their homecare program for older community members who need a bit of help.

“The goal of the program is to expose our young people to community service and the value that has in their own lives as well as those they are helping,” Junior School Leader, Mitchell Gray said.

“A big part of the program is also keeping the older residents in touch with their community and

having some friendly faces around them; in this case, it’s teenage faces.”

In the first term, the students do classroom work including communication, organisation and reporting.

For most of the students, gardening is not something they readily put their hand up to do at home, but working as a team and seeing just what a difference their efforts mean to people like Mr Hawker, is reinforcing one of the textbook messages.

“When we had Geoff Smith out from the RSL in term one, he talked about the role of volunteering as being much more about what you get than what you give,” said co-assistant principal, Michael Schultz.

“These kids absolutely get that now,” he said.

Student Carla Zekas said she actually did do gardening at home, but her main motivation for being part of the Homecare Group was that she just liked to help.

She said she was happy to help anyone in need.

“That Mr Hawker served this country is such a good thing and I want to help people like him and return the favour, but I am really keen to help anyone who needs help,” she said.

Pages from the past Healesville Guardian, 23 May 1936 OBVIOUS futility characterised the public meeting convened by the shire president in the council chamber last Friday night, to make further investigations into the ambitious proposal to establish a bush nursing hospital at Healesville.

Only 40 locals attended, heartily discouraging an outcome, which in itself bespokes severe criticism of Healesville’s accustomed lethargy and lack of spontaneity when a question so important came up for review.

It might also be recorded that many who attended the preliminary meeting some time back were conspicuous by their absence. It led to the question of whether they deem the whole scheme to ambitious.

The Bush Nursing Hospital Association’s committee inspected sites for the hospital in McGretton’s, Lilydale, Lalor’s, Crowley’s and Mt Leonard roads. A visit was made to Nurse Tonge’s but it was suggested that were there was

only one site that was suitable - Crowley’s Road.

And if Healesville were going to build a hospital it should be built of brick, an edifice which would be something to be proud of. A building that would possess all modern facilities and be installed for nurses and surgeons and with no such impediments as narrow passage and doorways.

Cr Kay strongly advocated a brick building.

He mentioned that he would be prepared to donate 100 pounds to the proposal providing the building be of brick. The site selected on Crowley’s road, favoured by Cr Kay is an ideal, picturesque spot.

Upper Yarra Mail, 26 May 1994 Upper Yarra Secondary College Grant THE Upper Yarra Secondary College community is celebrating after receiving word about its $150,000 government grant for improvement and upgrading works.

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS FEDERAL Shadow Treasurer Chris Bowen visited Lilydale Marketplace on Wednesday, 18 May, to support Casey Labor candidate Hovig Melkonian.

During a meet-and-greet with local businesses owners, Mr Bowen spoke about his support for Mr Melkonian and how a Labor government would support the Casey electorate.

“Hovig invited me to come out,” Mr Bowen said.

“I have come to know Hovig since he has been the candidate and he is very enthusiastic and energetic.

“When we have someone who is as keen to represent their area as much as Hovig is, I’m keen to help him out.”

Mr Bowen said a Labor win for Casey would see improvements delivered to the area, particularly in schools.

“A Labor budget would be not spending $50 billion on a corporate tax cut but spending 37 billion dollars on schools,” Mr Bowen said.

“This would benefit Casey terms of its education; I know TAFE has been a big issue here and the first step in a quality education is good quality schools.

“We have underfunded schools in Australia and in Casey and Labor will fix it.”

Mr Bowen also said he supported the Coalition’s small business tax cut, but with conditions.

“We support the small business tax cut to bring small business tax to 27.5 per cent and that will see small business grow," he said.

“What we don’t support is tax cuts for big business at the expense of support for small business or education.”

Mr Melkonian said he appreciated Mr Bowen’s visit and the support for him as candidate.

“We feel good about the campaign,” Mr Melkonian said.

“We have been campaigning here for over 10 months - we’ve made lots of phone calls and thousands of door-knocks.“ Mr Melkonian and Mr Bowen said a Labor victory in Casey was a real possibility and that they were working hard to achieve it.

“We are very confident of how we will go in Casey and think we will get a good result,” Mr Melkonian said.

Current Casey MP Tony Smith won the 2013 Federal Election for the seat with a margin of 14.4 per cent over then-Labor candidate, Cathy Farrell.

KEEN skiers are being sought by Lake Mountain to take up volunteer roles in its ski patrol, providing first-aid and advice to visitors - and getting to see plenty of snow.

The Lake Mountain Ski Patrol (LMSP) has begun its annual volunteer recruitment drive, seeking patrollers over the age of 18 who are fit, competent cross-country skiers with a level two first aid qualification.

The LMSP will hold a training weekend on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 June, getting interested volunteers up to speed on the snow season at the resort.

LMSP captain, Millgrove Outdoor Education Centre manager, Tim Hatten said the patrol members monitored areas for risks, provided first aid and advice to visitors, and assisted in searches when they occurred.

But he said the members also get to spend time with like-minded people, providing an “in-

valuable” service to the 100,000 visitors expected over the season.

“And, of course, we work in a beautiful environment and have the chance to ski the trails and chat with other skiers and snow players who are out on the snow and having fun.”

He said some patrollers had been involved for more than 20 years, and had plenty of knowledge and experience to share with new recruits.

“I can’t over-emphasise the value of volunteering, whether in the LMSP or any other community organisation,” he said.

“The sense of satisfaction gained from helping out, for no other reason than the desire to be of assistance, is priceless.”

RAINFALL is still down in Healesville with Alma Mitchell recording 61.8mm over nine days in April compared with 74.4mm over 16 days at the same time last year.

In Hoddles Creek, Doug Armstrong recorded 69mm over nine days compared with 115mm over 15 days in April 2015.

His January to April tally was 283mm for 2016 compared with 312mm in 2015 against a longterm average for April of 93mm.

Words of wisdom heard

By KATH GANNAWAY YARRA Valley Toastmaster clubs played host to Jim Kokocki, international president of the organisation last week, and introduced him to a Valleywide audience through Yarra Valley FM 99.1.

Mr Kokocki, an entrepreneur and business consultant, is in Australia as guest speaker at the District 73 Toastmasters Convention which was held in Adelaide on the weekend 20-22 May. Toastmasters was founded in 1924 with the aim of teaching public speaking and leadership, and the four Yarra Valley clubs, Healesville, Wan-

din, CFA District 13 and Lilydale are among more than 15,400 clubs in more than 130 countries world-wide.

Healesville member and past club president Kim Harris joined fellow Healesville member and Yarra Valley FM 99.1 presenter Cora Zon at the Woori Yallock studio on Thursday 19 May, to talk Toastmasters, business, communication and music.

In terms of tools for a successful business, Mr Kokocki said there were four steps which could be summed up in the acronym AIDA - Attention; Interest; Desire and Action.

“You need to grab their attention, interest them in how your product or

service can help them, create a desire for what you are offering and persuade them to take action such as buying or visiting your website,” he said.

He said while the business environment had changed over time, the foundational skills of communication and leadership remained solid.

Responding to a question on building communication skills, he said the key was to find an opportunity to practise and deliver your message.

“Knowledge can come from a lot of places, such as reading a book, but it is not sufficient,” he said.

“You need a place to practise and you need feedback from a mentor or

as part of a group to point you in the direction of where you may be very strong, or where you need development.”

Ms Harris said it was a wonderful opportunity provided for Mr Kokocki to share his insights and experience with a large audience.

“What it has illuminated for me is that we have this world-wide organisation and this huge team in Toastmasters, so it really opened my eyes to the idea that we need ways of working more collaboratively, but also that we are doing this together, and not doing this alone.

“It’s definitely a privilege for our

(Toastmasters) area, and for this community because a lot of what he was talking about was finding a place where you can learn skills and then take those skills out into the world, and that we need low cost ways of doing that as well.”

Mr Kokocki said he took great pride in the thousands of clubs around the world.

“I’m proud of the efforts of local club members who provide an environment in which members can become more confident to develop their communication skills and leadership skills,” he said.

Indigenous celebration

By JESSE GRAHAM YARRA Ranges residents are being called on to learn about and celebrate Aboriginal culture and history early next month, with the council hosting a Reconciliation Week event in Healesville.

The council’s event, From Racism Towards Cultural Pride and Safety, will be held at Healesville’s Memo Hall from 10am-1pm on Thursday, 9 June.

Speakers Professor Kerry Arabena, Richard Frankland and Anne Barton will discuss white privilege and its impacts, as well as celebrating cultural pride and living with cultural safety.

Mr Detez said that Ms Barton was the great granddaughter of Sir Edmund Barton - Australia’s first Prime Minister, and one of the architects of the White Australia policies.

He said Ms Barton would discuss white privilege - privileges in society that benefitted white people more than non-white people from similar backgrounds - and the impact it had on modern Australia, while Prof Arabena would discuss cultural approaches to improving Aboriginal health and well-being.

Mr Frankland, a Gunitjmara man and singer-songwriter, will discuss cultural safety, and the idea of a society free from racism.

Prof Arabena has a Doctorate in Human Ecology, and is chair of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Equity Unit at the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health and is a descendant of the Meriam people of the Torres Strait.

Last year’s event at the Memo drew residents, community group representatives and Aboriginal elders, discussing the state of reconciliation and the concept of “Indigenous ways of knowing” - a term Mr Detez described as “stuff based on connection”.

Cars cop a spray in overnight attack

This year’s event is being organised

by the council, in conjunction with Inspiro and Healesville Indigenous Community Services Association (HICSA).

Mr Detez said he hoped Aboriginals and non-Aboriginals from the Yarra Ranges would attend the event - particularly those who may not know much about reconciliation, racism and Aboriginal culture.

“That’s the main reason why we’re putting this sort of stuff on - to provide

some deeper insights into a lot of the issues that are affecting our society today,” he said.

“We’re really interested in moving past this concept of racism, to a community where all cultures are valued, acknowledged and recognised.”

A NUMBER of car owners in Eileen Grove, Woori Yallock, were shocked to find their cars had been targeted by vandals overnight Wednesday 18 May. As many as five or six cars were spray painted, causing thousands of dollars of damage.

Resident, Jason Bald, said a friend’s car was among those damaged in what appears to be a random attack.

“We walked out this morning to see spray paint all over the neighbours cars, all up the road there were cars spray painted with obscenities,” he said.

He said his friend, who was heading interstate later in the day, was devastated.

“It’s his first car and he is really shattered,” he said.

“We think it happened about midnight and are hoping that we will be able to get some information from CCTV footage in the street.”

Mr Bald and other victims have gone on social media, posting photos of the damaged cars, and with another resident saying her car had been broken into with what looked like an attempt to steal it.

Yarra Junction police are keen to hear from anyone with information about the attacks.

By JESSE GRAHAM GETTING Harry Potter and Alice in Wonderland under the same roof isn’t something that usually occurs in Healesville.

But for the next month, visitors to the Healesville Library will get just that, with the Victorian Association of Miniature Enthusiasts (VAME) showing off their work.

VAME members Jane Bullock and Karen Barnes visited the library on Tuesday 17 May, to put the finishing touches on a new exhibit, showcasing members’ works in creating miniature worlds.

Scenes from Harry Potter and Alice in Wonderland, as well as houses, objects and street scenes fill the shelves of the exhibition, all meticulously hand-made to scale.

One piece, depicting Harry first getting sent his letters to Hogwarts, is made within a book, with a detailed replica of Harry’s cupboard underneath the stairs.

Ms Barnes said the group met regularly in Mount Waverley, with members coming from the Yarra Valley and around the state to work on pieces, share tips and information, and take part in workshops.

“The good thing about the workshops we do is you actually go home most times, and I’d say about 95 per cent of the time, with a completed article,” she said.

“While you’re waiting for one piece to dry, you’re painting another piece - while that’s drying, you’re going back to the first piece - it’s like a little production line."

“The good thing about miniatures is it incorporates all crafts - we do wood work, we do fabric work, we do knitting, we do embroidery; we work with paper, we work with plastics; we’re gluing things, we’re constructing things,” she said.

“The skill set gets widened, and you don’t have to be brilliant - you don’t have to be perfect - you just have to want to do it.”

The exhibition, she said, was to promote VAME to the wider community, as well as the Miniatures and Dollhouse Fair and Exhibition on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 July at the Mount Waverley Community Centre.

The exhibition will be on display until the end of June.

AN EXCITING exhibition of works from 19 young people from the Yarra Valley opened on Saturday 21 May at the The Waterwheel Gallery in Warburton.

Curator, Suyin Chan, said the exhibition, ‘The Yarts of the Valley’, is a collection of mostly first-time exhibitors.

“The collection represents a lively mix of styles and mediums from Manga, spray paint, murals, clay, and reproductions to photographs, acrylics, pencil, fineline pens and watercolour,” Ms Chan said.

Students from Upper Yarra

Secondary College, Little Yarra Steiner School and the Yarra Valley Community School are represented in this diverse exhibition, as well as a few first year university students, and one senior primary school student.

“This exhibition is well worth a visit to see what amazing young talent we have in the area,” Ms Chan said.

The Yarts of the Valley is open until 8 June at The Waterwheel Centre, Main Street, Warburton.

The centre and the gallery are open every day from 10am to 4pm.

Angry Birds doesn’t quite deliver The Angry Birds Movie Starring Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad and Danny McBride Rated PG THE video game arguably least deserving of a film adaptation has just gotten one, and it’s nothing special.

Based on Rovio’s popular handheld game, The Angry Birds Movie follows Red (voiced by Jason Sudeikis), a belligerent fowl in a mostly peaceful community of birds.

When an invading force of pigs steals the birds’ eggs, Red rallies the town to rescue the eggs.

A case could be made

that Angry Birds is straightforward, energetic and has really fluid, colourful and expressive animation, all of which should keep your kids entertained.

But beyond these minor positives, Angry Birds is a simplistic, disposable and rather irritating children’s movie.

The characters are all one-note, and Red is a thoroughly unlikeable protagonist.

The plot has very little suspense or momentum, and feels contrived whenever it tries to make sense out of the source game’s rules, especially when you consider that the birds (in their siege on the pig city) are

technically war criminals and the pigs would-be child murderers.

The humour is also very poor, consisting mostly of puerile gags, uninspired references and some meanspirited slapstick in the beginning.

Angry Birds is an adequate diversion, but Frozen, Big Hero 6, Zootopia and multiple Pixar movies (most notably Inside Out) have proved that kids are smarter than this.

The Angry Birds Movie is a lacklustre example among both children’s movies and video game movies.

Yarra Ranges are champs THE Yarra Ranges hosted Mornington Peninsula at Healesville Football Ground on Saturday for the 2016 WorkSafe Community Championships.

The sun was shining, the breeze was blowing and everybody was geared up to witness some high standards in football and netball.

The Yarra Ranges were coming off a disappointing performance in 2015 and were looking at making amends.

Coming up against an unknown quantity in Mornington Peninsula Nepean was always going to make it an interesting contest.

Coaches Danny Ryan and Simon Blackney had their boys prepared while Sarah Hogan and Rachael Hickey were looking at showing just how strong the Yarra Ranges Netball competition is and they did not disappoint.

FOOTBALL SENIOR Yarra Ranges 13.8(86) d Mornington Peninsula Nepean FL(2) 12.4(76) Yarra Ranges started the day off with a blast, kicking with a slight breeze to the dog track end of the ground.

Rodney Woodford (Healesville) kicked 3 in the first and it looked like it might be all one way traffic.

Mornington fought back late in the quarter, kicking three themselves and it was all square at quarter time.

The challenge was on.

Jordy Williams (Woori Yallock) and Justin Myers (Wandin) were the driving force through the centre, while Damon Kift (Mount Evelyn) was working hard across the backline.

It was goal for goal in the second and Yarra went into the major break with a 1-point lead.

Words from the coach at half-time was to be smart.

Play tempo footy, know when to slow the ball down and hold onto it.

Look for our opportunities.

That is just what they did in the third, taking advantage of the breeze and held Mornington goalless while kicking 3.

Ben Monkhorst (Woori Yallock), Robbie Hartfield (Mount Evelyn) and Marcus Hottes (Olinda) started to make their presence felt.

Mornington made a run in the last, kicking 5 goals to 3, but just could not get around the defence of Bart Wallace (Alexandra) and James Marasco (Yea).

Matt Polkinghorne (Wandin) played a captain’s role and lead by example all day.

Yarra Ranges fought hard all day, but it was never going to be easy to claw back the lead that Mornington had.

Mornington played a well-drilled possession game of football and Yarra were always chasing.

They certainly did no damage to it beating Mornington Peninsula by 30 goals. The game started at a frenetic pace with Yarra Ranges shooting 14 goals to 11.

Ash Howard (Olinda) started off with a 9 goal first quarter.

Krista Tomlinson was as always a force to be reckoned with in the centre, while the trio of Kaitlyn Black (Mount Evelyn), Ty Coppinger (Wandin) and Tamara Luke (Olinda) were a real mountain

to try and shoot over.

Another 17 goals in the second to 8 saw a lead of 12 goals at halftime.

The final straw was the 18-goal third quarter that really put the result to rest.

They got the jump from the outset with Emerson Woods (Warburton Millgrove) and Holly McInerney (Wandin) setting the scene under the ring. Ciara Lumsden (Wandin) was a goer all day.

A seven-goal lead at the first break set up the match.

Holly McInerney was amazing under the ring, shooting nine and 10 goals in the second and third quarters, while the defence stood tall led by Emelie AinslieAitkens (Wandin), Alanna Lennie (Wandin) and Stephanie Durant (Warburton Millgrove).

The final quarter was the biggest scoring quarter, with Yarra shooting 16 to Mornington 5. A well-deserved win to the girls.

Great day for gun Phillip THE weather for the Woods Point Gun Club’s Tear Gully Championships was fine but cool with a good attendance and keen competition.

To clear the cobwebs out of the barrels, shooters started with a 10 target Eye Opener with Daryl Ewert, Phillip Desmond, Trevor Ewert, John Wood and Josh Cleeland all sharing the cash pool.

The first of the championships was the Tear Gully 40 target Double Barrel.

No one managed the magical 40/40 but Phillip Desmond claimed the championship sash, 44/45, after a short shoot off with Laurie Poile.

Desmond took the AA Grade prize as well. Ken Skinner was second in AA, 43/45.

Trevor Ewert claimed A Grade, 56/59, with Daniel Chinn in second place, 55/59. Poile took B Grade 39/40, Peter West the runner-up, 35/40, while in C Grade Marty McLachlan took the honours with a great 37/40 from Peter Shahin, 37/43.

After lunch the shooters assembled for the 20 target TAG Handicap with only Peter West returning a perfect 20/20 to

take the Championship sash.

Chuck Lay, Ken Skinner and Rob Bevis fought for the minor places with Lay second, 31/33, then Bevis, 30/33 and Skinner, 21/23.

The day finished with the TAG Auto and Driven Championship and was won outright by Trevor Ewert, 26/30.

Desmond’s 25/30 was enough to secure second place with David Frazer and Geoff Hill shooting off for third and fourth. Hill finished third, 30/40 and Frazer fourth, 27/40.

Desmond took the overall High Gun sash with an excellent 82/90 to finish a successful day.

Anne Skinner prepared a great lunch and afternoon tea that Bushies Bakery added to with a large array of pies and cakes.

SATURDAY Foursomes-Championships - The much-coveted foursomes championships was played over 27 gruelling

holes, with an outright pairs title and a nett title to win.

The defending champions, Paul Mason and Jon Cross were out to win it again. And, they did!

Both players were believed to have played great golf for the entire 27 holes, to come in with a superb 103, ‘off the stick’. This is par for 27 holes, so clearly there were some birdies mixed in with some bogies. They won with a healthy winning margin, which pleased Junior greatly! Congratulations to both title winners, as their

names will be posted on the honour boards soon.

The equally important nett title went to two gentlemen who have been mentioned before in this column. Jason Kennedy and Paul Long combined really well to come in with a nett score of 104.5.

(Holidays must agree with the both of them).

Any pair who scored 113 or lower succeeded in getting into the ball rundown.

The NTPs were won by Sam Dennis 3rd, Mase 5th, Allan Hubbard 9th, and CHB on the 12th.

ATHLETICS Victoria’s XCR series turned its attention to Cruden Farm, Langwarrin, for Heritage Round on Saturday.

A fantastic day and sensational venue provided for some excellent running over a very fun - but challenging - course.

Standout performances came from Georgia Laven, emphatically winning the Under 16 Girls 6km race, with new member Annabel Luxford finishing in 24th place in a star-studded Open Women’s 8km and the Open Women finishing 10 athletes - this is a great sign that the club is attracting new athletes of all ages and abilities.

Motoring Roll up for 4x4 action

By KATH GANNAWAY IF THE great outdoors is your thing, the National 4x4 Outdoors Show, Fishing and Boating Expo is going to grab your attention.

The show returns to the Melbourne Showgrounds in August, and the Mail, in conjunction with the organisers, has 10 double passes to give away.

Surrounded by national parks and the Great Divide, it’s no surprise that this show, and the annual ticket giveaway is popular with Mail readers.

The action-packed outdoors haven for fishermen, boat enthusiasts, 4WDers and outback tourers will showcase tens of thousands of fishing, boating, camping, outdoors and 4x4 products from over 200 leading exhibitors and retailers.

Event director, Paul Mathers, said they were thrilled to be bringing the show back to Melbourne.

“The show will once again cater for all interests in the great outdoors,” Mr Mathers said.

“Whether it’s fishing, boating, camping or four wheel driving you’re passionate about, you will be in outdoors heaven at the show.”

The show will feature more than 30,000 square metres of the best outdoors products and services in a onestop shop bringing exhibitors and enthusiasts together for everything to do with outdoor adventure.

Mr Mathers said exhibitors came from a wide range of categories and some exciting big-name exhibitors had already signed on.

“We will be showcasing everything from big ticket items such as boats, caravans and four wheel drives, to fishing rods, outdoors clothing and accessories,” he said.

Tickets will soon be on sale for the landmark event that also bring a fantastic line-up of special guests and industry experts to the Melbourne Showgrounds.

The line-up to date includes the ever-popular Paul Worsteling from TV’s iFish, Roothy the Bush Mechanic, Jase Andrews from All 4 Adventure, Shaun and Graham from 4WD Action, and Rick, Jamie and fishing legend Starlo from The Offroad Adventure Show.

Ex-AFL legend Peter ‘Spida’ Everitt and his wife Sheree will also feature hosting the popular Campfire Cooking Corner.

For 4WD enthusiasts, the Waeco Outback Stage and dedicated 4WD

On track for a great 4WD experience. 154543 Proving Ground, a purpose-built track run by 4WD Victoria, will provide the opportunity to learn how to use a 4x4 to its maximum capability on a variety of surfaces simulating being off the beaten track.

To entertain all ages, the exciting Action Arena will feature the awardwinning Outback Thunda monster truck and the roly-poly car will show off its amazing backflips, with still

more entertainment to be announced.
