By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS YARRA Ranges Shire released their 2016-’17 budget for public consultation on Wednesday 11 May, three weeks after Cardinia Shire Council adopted their 2016-’17 budget on Tuesday 26 April.

Cardinia Shire Council has allocated $36 million for recreation facilities, roads and other capital works across the whole municipality.

As detailed in the capital works program for 2016-’17, Cardinia Shire Council have allocated $5.2 million of the spend on major projects in the Hills.

Cockatoo’s Fairbridge Lane will have a $50,000 facelift and $150,000 has been set aside for the new Emerald-Gembrook trail.

In large infrastructure projects, Car-

dinia Council has allotted $3.5 million for the construction of the Hills Hub in this budget, despite the tumultuous nature of the project to date.

Cardinia has also earmarked $1.5 million for the construction of a new pavilion and courts for the Emerald Netball Club.

The Hills will also receive a share of $1.3 million of pavement renewal, $900,000 of unsealed road re-sheeting, $2 million of resurfacing and $100,000 of traffic management allocated for the whole of Cardinia.

Both the 2016-’17 budget and the Council Plan for Cardinia were adopted at a special council meeting 26 April, after the budget pages and plan were scrutinised by the community.

At the meeting, Mayor Jodie Owen thanked residents for their feedback.

“With a new quick and online sur-

vey, we received more feedback on a draft budget than ever before,” she said.

“It was fantastic to see so many people willing to share their thoughts and ideas with council on which services they value, so thankyou to everyone who took a few minutes to complete the survey.”

Yarra Ranges Shire Council 2016’17 Budget also has many projects for the Hills and will be open for community consultation until 5pm 9 June.

Yarra Ranges Council will spend a total of $14 million on roads throughout the shire, with $1.5 million of road upgrades allocated just for the town of Monbulk.

Monbulk, along with Upwey, was also a big winner for footpaths with $116,000 for works along Masches Hill Road and $490,000 for footpaths

along McAllister Road and Moores Road in Monbulk.

Upwey is earmarked for $65,000 for a laneway footpath on Morris Road to Ferndale Road this coming financial year.

Construction of a new community sports pavilion in Belgrave South has $1 million allocated in the coming financial year.

This draft budget also lays out $4 million dollars for the construction of the Belgrave Health Hub for the 2017’18 financial year and more funding in the coming fiscal years.

Yarra Ranges Mayor Jason Callanan said the council has been finding ways over the years to make savings and direct money into services for the community.

“There is no doubt that local government is experiencing rapid change

and Yarra Ranges is not ignoring it,” he said.

One of the major savings the council found is $300,000 to $400,000 a year by removing VicRoads a services from Monbulk, Healesville and Yarra Junction.

A 10-year-old girl from Macclesfield Primary School has made a brave step in loving who she is by organising a fund-raiser to support people with alopecia.

Eva Stickland started losing her hair two years ago and started wearing hats and wigs to school.

Recently she organised a fundraiser where her teacher and friends donated their hair and Eva made a heart-felt and honest speech revealing her true self to her school.

Volunteers for Billy

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS NATIONAL Volunteer Week ran from 9 to 15 May, and celebrated the contribution volunteers make to communities across the country.

Puffing Billy Railway utilises a crew of more than 900 volunteers to keep the railway running and visitors enjoying the history and beauty of the Dandenong Ranges.

Volunteers at Puffing Billy fill important roles such as locomotive crews, station masters, conductors, booking clerks, refreshment room attendants, administration, engineering and gardening.

These volunteers give their time and hard work to making the Puffing Billy experience a major tourism draw for the area.

Below are just four of the many volunteers who work hard to make Puffing Billy the amazing experience it is.

Emma Pallister has been a member of the Puffing Billy crew for eight years, following in her father’s footsteps.

“The Great Train Race was my introduction to the railway,” she said.

“Afterwards, I did several odd jobs around the railway until I could do my safe-working (a qualification to operate the trains) then to fire a locomotive.”

Ms Pallister is now in the young Volunteer Representative Group, works as a fireman any chance she gets and says Puffing Billy has become a big part of her life.

“It’s like having a second family, I get to meet people from all walks of life, but they are all equal on this railway, everyone is so friendly,” she said.

At 13 years of age, Ashton Edgley became the youngest qualified volunteer conductor on the railway.

“At the age of 12, I was offered a big opportunity, which was to begin training as a conductor under the condition that my mum was in attendance,” Mr Edgley said.

“After a year of training under the highly capable volunteers such as Alan Gray and Bob Prewett, both mum and I qualified as conductors.”

Since qualifying as a conductor, Mr Edgley has worked other jobs at the railway including engine cleaner, fire patrol and special events such

“Overall, my time at the railway has been extremely enjoyable and an experience that has taught me many valuable skills,” he said.

“Puffing Billy is a very important part of Australian heritage, and I will always take pride in maintaining that ‘step back in time’ experience for generations to come.”

Train enthusiast Tony Harris has been a Puffing Billy volunteer for 10 years, and has fond memories of the historic train from his childhood.

“I used to ride in the engine around Belgrave yard as a five or six-year-old in the early ’50s,” he said.

Mr Harris volunteers across three other historic railways in addition to his roles as fireman and engine driver for Puffing Billy.

“What I find enjoyable about volunteering at Puffing Billy is the interaction with the passengers, showing them the Locomotive and explaining how it works,” he said.

“Also, the setting in which we volunteer is ideal as the Dandenong Ranges is one of the most beautiful places in the world.”

Bernadette Cowley saw volunteering with Puffing Billy as a great opportunity to give back to the community after her retirement 12 years ago. Ms Crowley works as a head conductor, conductor training officer and uniform co-ordinator, and said her volunteer work has made for some very interesting experiences.

“I was a head conductor attending to a tour group of over 350 very polite Japanese students,” she said.

“I was shocked with the response of the group, bursting out laughing and applauding me at the same time. I clearly I had said something incredibly wrong!”

Ms Cowley said she enjoyed the unique opportunities she got as a volunteer with Puffing Billy to meet people from all over Australia and the world.

Deer cull park closure

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS NATIONAL Parks and nature reserves around the Dandenong Ranges will be closed to the public in the coming months as Parks Victoria conducts a controlled deer cull.

The program will take place in the Dandenong Ranges National Park, Yellingbo Nature Conservation Reserve and Warramate Nature Conservation Reserve.

Parks Victoria’s District Manager Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Ranges District, Craig Bray said the culling program was necessary to protect native plants in these areas.

“Parks Victoria is conducting a deer control program targeting Fallow and Sambar Deer which are species that are having a negative impact on the native vegetation and biodiversity,” he said.

This year will see the deer management program take place for the third consecutive time since 2014.

“Deer control operations are supervised by Parks Victoria with accredited

and authorised volunteer members of the Australian Deer Association and the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia,” Mr Bray said.

Hunters will be using two main techniques when hunting the deer through the parks.

Hunters are permitted to use the spotlighting method of hunting at night, where hunters use high-powered lights, spotlights, lamps or flashlights to ‘spot’ the deer in the dark.

This method uses the ‘eye shine’ from the deer to locate them and also the bright lights to freeze them and have more chance of a successful and clean kill.

Mr Bray said cull will continue until the negative impact the deer have on native vegetation is reduced but will be run during peak visitor times to the park such as weekends and public holidays.

“Safety is of utmost importance to Parks Victoria. The program is conducted under strict supervision following comprehensive safety procedures.”

While it is unclear what the population of deer are in and around the Dandenong Ranges, Parks Victoria are aiming to increase the number of deer culled in previous years.

“A total of 154 deer have been culled since the program commenced in 2014,” Mr Bray said.

“Parks Victoria has a renewed Authority to Control Wildlife Permit which permits up to 215 deer to be removed this year.”

Native endangered species such as the Leadbeater’s Possum and Helmeted Honeyeater are at risk of their habitats being destroyed by deer when they thrash their antlers against trees.

The aim of the cull is to reduce the impact of deer on the environment and the recovery of native plant species and improved habitat for native animals.

The deer control program has support from Zoos Victoria, Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater and Friends of Leadbeater’s Possum.

Briefly Woman escapes in horrific crash A FERNY Creek woman was hospitalised over the weekend, after being involved in a horror crash on One Tree Hill Road that destroyed her car.

Belgrave police Leading Senior Constable Andrew Allen said at 1pm on Sunday 15 May the 35-year-old woman was driving west on the road, when she failed to negotiate a bend in the road.

“The vehicle has clipped a tree on the side of the road, and then it spun 90 degrees and then rolled onto its roof, before ... coming to rest between three other trees,” Leading Sen Const Allen said.

The driver was trapped in the car and rescued by CFA volunteers, before being taken to The Alfred hospital by ambulance.

Leading Sen Const Allen said the driver was not believed to be on drugs or under the influence of alcohol, but that police were investigating speed as a factor in the crash.

When asked about the damage to the car, Leading Sen Const Allen said the car was “more than written off”, and photos on the Eyewatch - Yarra Ranges Police Service Area Facebook page showed the red car destroyed by the crash.

He said one of the car’s tyres was found 24 metres away from the car.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said the driver, who was the only occupant in the car, was taken to The Alfred in a stable condition.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Acting Sergeant Marc Hodgson said a 36-year-old Mount Evelyn man was arrested in Chirnside Park in the early hours of Saturday 14 May. The man was then charged in regards to offences spanning the last six months in the outer eastern suburbs, including around the Yarra Valley.

Det Sgt Hodgson said the offences included theft from motor vehicles, theft of motor vehicles, burglaries, handling stolen goods and firearms offences.

He was remanded in custody to appear at the Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on Friday 20 May.

Nursery car stolen MONBULK police officers are calling for witnesses, after a yellow Holden Commodore was pinched from a Monbulk nursery last week.

Leading Senior Constable Ken Tromp said about 11am on Friday 13 May, the 2008 model car was stolen

from a nursery on Old Emerald Road in Monbulk.

He said the thief was believed to have dumped another stolen car, a Ford Transit, around the corner from the nursery.

Later that day, the Commodore was recovered bearing stolen number plates, after being involved in an accident in Croydon.

Leading Sen Const Tromp said that anyone who saw “suspicious males” loitering around Monbulk at the time of the theft should contact Monbulk police on 9756 6266 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

New school TV stolen POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a television was stolen from Upwey High School over the weekend, Belgrave Leading Senior Constable Andrew Allen said about 3am on Sunday 15 May, thieves broke into the high school on Burwood Highway, stealing a large television.

Leading Sen Const Allen said the television had only been installed a week before the theft.

Anyone who may have seen suspicious activity around the area at the time of the theft is asked to call Belgrave police on 9754 6677 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

DRIVERS are being called on by police to be proactive and protect their rego plates before thieves struck, with free anti-theft screws available at Lilydale Police Station.

POLICE are searching for witnesses to come forward, after thieves made off with tools from Mont De Lancy Historic Homestead over the weekend.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Acting Sergeant Marc Hodgson said about 3.45am on Sunday 15 May, thieves smashed through the gates to Mont De Lancy on Wellington Road in Wandin North.

The burglars then smashed a window to the museum premises, and attempted to steal a computer and cash, but were unsuccessful.

Det Sgt Hodgson said the thieves then entered a workshop and stole tools and power tools, including a welder, and an antique unregistered trailer - as well as jewellery from the museum.

He said the stolen items were worth about $1300, and that police were asking witnesses or people with information to

“We’re asking that people who have been victim of any thefts of chainsaw to contact the office,” Det Sgt Hodgson said.

He said that tool owners should take note of the serial numbers of their power tools, and to pass those numbers onto police in the event of a theft, so that the tools can be easily sent back to their owners if found.

He said the budget cut comes at a time the sector faces a national funding cliff, the Productivity Commission has called for an expansion of legal assistance funding, and the Victorian Government has recognised increased demand in family violence with funding increases.

Michael Smith also cited the fact an extra day added to the Ringwood Magistrates’ Court capacity as family violence matters increased and Victoria Police figures that showed an increase of 228.69 per cent over the past five years in the number of Intervention Order applications in Yarra Ranges.

Tony Smith pointed to $350,000 funding announced in September 2015 for a Women’s Safety Package pilot program through ECLC. The $100 million program provides $15 million for legal assistance services.

“I believe the pilot program, once complete, will put forward a compelling case for future funding,” Tony Smith said.

He said the 2016/17 Budget had also provided $100 million in new funding for a family violence package over the next three years, a significant component of which would go to legal assistance services.

WILLIAM Daw of Monbulk Secondary College is one of 249 students from across the state to receive a Premier’s VCE Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement.

William was selected out of 50,000 students who completed a VCE subject in 2015 and scored 46 points or more out of 50 in a particular subject.

In William’s case, he scored very highly in the subject of Interactive Digital Media.

The awards were presented at a ceremony on Thursday 28 April at the Palladium at Crown where William received a certificate to commemorate his award.

“The Premier’s VCE Award is awarded to the highest ranking students in each subject in VCE,” William said.

“I was third for interactive digital media, and that made me eligible for the award.”

William was still in Year 11 when he completed his VET course and now in Year 12 he already has a Certificate III which he will be able to use later in his career.

“It is quite good to have won the award as it is very prestigious and only a very small percentage gets it,” he said.

“It’s really good to show how much effort I put in the two years doing the subject.”

The award has given William the confidence in his Year 12 studies to strive to do his best.

“Having the Certificate III shows that I have the ability to achieve high marks and the award also shows that,” he said.

Monbulk Secondary College Principal Margaret Uren said the award is an acknowledgement of the student’s hard work.

THE Eastern Community Legal Centre (ECLC) has responded to the 2016/17 Federal Budget with a warning that the most vulnerable communities in Yarra Ranges stand to lose access to critical legal services.

ECLC CEO, Michael Smith, said the Centre faces another year in ‘funding limbo’ after the budget confirmed a 30 per cent cut in funding in July 2017.

Casey MP, Tony Smith, has vowed however to continue to advocate for a source of future funding for the organisation, and pointed to other funding sources as possibilities.

Funding was cut in the previous budget but was reinstated with a one-off $400,000 grant for the Yarra Ranges centre after the Casey MP went in to bat for the organisation.

The ECLC Yarra Ranges Centre caters for 140,000 people living across the municipality and according to Michael Smith is not only facing increasing demand for services, but is having to deal with the ongoing impact and pressure of funding uncertainty.

“Our Centre is already facing huge demand for family violence and other legal help but the Centre will now have to expend energy to advocate to retain services,

Fight’s on to keep it clear AS someone who went to Ferny Creek Primary School and Upper Ferntree Gully Tech, lived in the hills nearly all my life and having worked as a local police officer, I understand what a unique place we live in.

I also understand the need to balance environmental concerns with bushfire protection measures, which is why last election I committed $4.3 million to the Dandenong Ranges Wildlife Recovery, Weed Management and Fuel Reduction Program - which has never been matched by Labor since I first announced I was fighting for it back in 2007.

As a part of this delivery, I developed the national pilot Dandenong Ranges Environment and Bushfire

Fuel Reduction Community Grants Program which enables environmental groups and other organisations to complete works on public as well as private land.

I am happy to report that Round One of the Program had 29 successful projects, and Round Two has had 22 applications, and successful applications will be announced soon which is

why I’m fighting to have this program continued for at least the next three years.

We’ve also been doing some great things for youth in the hills with the record funding delivered for both the Belgrave Health Hub and the Emerald Community Hub - $3.835M and $1.5M respectively and the Emerald Lakers basketball Stadium.

These Hubs will include skills and training development spaces, health and counselling services, an arts space, rooms for community groups to hire, local tourism promotion, Council customer service outlets, youth services, maternal and child health, aged and disability services, emergency relief services across both hubs and I’m also

looking for ways to bring a headspace facility into at least one of the two. On another note, some of you may have read about my unique rail concept for the hills.

I have fond memories as a child of travelling on the old red rattler trains from Belgrave to the CBD and I would love to be able to bring that back for our youth of today.

The benefit of this, aside from nostalgia, is a huge boost to local tourism. This forms a part of my La Trobe tourism and history package which includes four main elements.

Firstly we have the restoring of red rattler trains so they can be used to transport passengers from Mel-

bourne CBD out to the Belgrave start point of Puffing Billy.

Second, I want to build a state of the art Discovery Centre at Emerald Lake to display the rich history of Puffing Billy and The Hills in Victoria.

Third, working in conjunction with the Yarra Ranges Shire Council I want to create the Villages of Mt Dandenong Walk which includes a celebration of local and national artists from past and present.

Finally we’ve got the opening of the Bullen Bullen Indigenous Tours this week which aims to educate locals and visitors of our rich local Indigenous history.

Funds spread to SES

A SPOKESPERSON for the Victorian Government has confirmed the SES will receive a share of the Emergency Management Capability funding which has been increased in the 2016/'17 budget.

“In 2016/'17, the government is contributing more than $51 million to the SES across the state,” the spokesperson said.

“We understand the demands that are placed on SES units, and we continue to work with them to help meet these challenges.”

Ben Owen from Emerald SES said $50 million for the 149 VICSES units is not enough to meet the funding needs of the organisation. “$50 million doesn’t go very far in this day and age, especially across the whole state,” Mr Owen said.

The government also anticipates that VICSES units will apply for grants through the Victorian Government’s $12.8 million Volun-

teer Emergency Services Equipment Program (VESEP).

The grants of up to $100,000 are used to purchase operational equipment, vehicles and for minor facility improvements.

Mr Owen said there was no point in applying for grants for minor improvements to the Emerald unit’s shed. “$100,000 doesn’t go that far towards a new building, especially when there is no stable infrastructure currently in place,” he said “We have nothing solid to build an extension onto.”

Mr Owen also said while these State Government grants were helpful, they didn’t meet the needs of SES units in high call-out areas.

“Those grants are wonderful, but you still have to put in one dollar of community money for every two dollars of government grant money.”

Alright for some SO the budget has been read. Sadly, nothing for the hoi polloi, but if you earn more than $80,000 a year, you get a tax break. It is $1538 per week. I see nothing for low wage earners. I see nothing for pensioners. I see nothing for young people trying to get a foot on the ladder of owning their own home and (while it was said as a joke), Malcolm Turnbull’s joking aside, get your parents to buy you a house? How out of touch is he?

I came late to home ownership, but at that time the Labor Party provided a grant of $5000 to help you out. That helped a lot. Why not now?

Does this country really need 12 submarines at a horrendous price? I am sure people will think me naive. Now the election is called, we hear it is impossible for Labor to win. They need 21 seats. Well they said that back in 1993, and they came through. I remember that so well, as I was handing out how to vote papers. It was the end of the day. I can’t remember what Keating had offered young mums but they kept coming to me and asked if I was Labor. The Liberal Party and Labor had practically the same logo. I ran out and had to ask people to bring back the papers when they left. I thought, when it came time to pack up, there were some sad faces who thought we were gone. Not me - I thought we might just do it. Some thought me deluded. That night, my daughter was at the count. She rang at 8pm - they had called it. Labor won. It will be hard but it can be done.

There are some Coalition seats that are vulnerable, La Trobe being one. I live in hope, so let the battle commence. We are in for a bumpy ride.

Hub of hope RE ‘Saving the Hub’ (Ranges Trader Mail, 10 May), Mr McFarlane has made a wonderful idea seem within our grasp.

If the entrenched powerbrokers of Emerald Hall are lacking in awareness of what is good for the broader community, then let us lobby for a Cockatoo hub.

Cockatoo has already had one scheme for a hub negated around five years ago and was looking forward to the provision of the Hills Hub at Emerald, but a location at Cockatoo would serve the region even better.

THE Monbulk Care Network (MCN) will be holding an inaugural Gala Fashion Parade to support the non-for-profit charity Fulcrum Aid. Fulcrum Aid is a newly established Australian company which is a voluntary, non-profit relief and development organisation committed to resourcing local innovative leaders within communities experiencing poverty and extreme inequality.

In Uganda, they provide teenage orphan girls with opportunities for financial independence and ongoing education instead of being forced into marriages.

In South Sudan, they resource the training of nurses and midwives in Papua New Guinea, developing a program designed to address intergenerational poverty.

In Bangladesh, they are supporting a program for isolated HIV+ orphans.

The MCN will be raising money to support the organisation with a parade that features prestige clothing, millinery and matching accessories as collected by a former volunteer of MCN. MCN is an outreach of the Open Door Community Church which seeks to be a localised, authentic expression of Christian faith.

The profits from money raised at our op shop are used to support child wellbeing in local schools and those in our community who are struggling.

INSPIRATIONAL Indigenous singer and songwriter Fank Yamma will take the stage at the Montrose Town Centre on 26 May for a reconciliation week performance.

An award-winning artist, Frank Yamma said his performance was about storytelling and history as much as it was about music and soul.

“It’s really a huge kick for me,” he said.

“I really enjoy it relaxing and telling a story between songs.

“I tell local stories of other communities and from different towns and that region.”

Frank Yamma said he was glad to come back to the Dandenongs for reconciliation week as it was not the first time he had come to visit.

“It’s (reconciliation) about every Aboriginal people across Australia,” he said.

“It says people can live in their home and with their family and all this stuff happening all around, and I’m really glad I am playing that part of the show.

“I will be singing about songs that affect some other people in that area and what reconciliation is all about.”

Frank Yamma’s performance will include songs from his previous albums, his new album ‘Uncle’ and songs he has never recorded before.

Doors will open for this wonderful performance at 8pm on Thursday 25 May at the Montrose Town Centre with tickets available from www.culturetracks.info.

PERFORMING Arts festival ‘hillsceneLIVE’ is reaching out to the community to get the festival back for 2016.

The festival made its debut in 2014 and put exciting and challenging artists at centre stage of the Dandenong Ranges.

Festival organisers are now seeking help from the community through an online crowd-funding campaign to support the artists involved.

The funds from the campaign will go towards putting together a full weekend of artistry including professional development sessions, mentoring for young artists, and practical workshops.

This year the festival is supported by Creative Partnerships Australia (CPA) through their MATCH program.

CPA will match dollar for dollar for every dollar donated through the online crowd funding campaign, and hillsceneLIVE is offering prizes to people who donate.

Healesville scrape home

By CAMERON HUTCHINSON AFL YARRA RANGES AGAIN we were blessed with awesome weather. Bit windy at some grounds but probably not enough to make too much of a difference unless you were at Gembrook, Wandin, Olinda or Powelltown, as the score lines indicated either wind assistance or purely good or bad kicking whichever way you look at it.

Wandin 48 scoring shots to 16, Powelltown 29 scoring shots to 22 but 20 of them were behinds.

Olinda 42 shots to 13, Yea 45 scoring shots to 25 and Monbulk 33 shots to Upwey 26 and yes, Upwey won.

In netball Wandin, Olinda, Woori, Upwey and Warburton share the ladder leaders throughout the Division 1 Grades while in Division 2 Seville, Yea and Yarra Glen are holding the top spots after Round 5.

Interleague now takes the limelight for the next week with the Senior and Under 19 Football as well as Senior and 17 and Under Netball taking on Nepean at Healesville on Saturday, 21 May.

Bendigo Community Bank Division 1 Senior Football Healesville 10.13(73) def Mount Evelyn 8.13(61) Mount Evelyn will be disappointed with their efforts. They had a very handy 5 goal to zip lead after the first quarter and would have been feeling quietly confident. Healesville came out in the second and stunned Mount Evelyn by kicking 4.4 to the Mounters 3 behinds. A 32-point lead was reduced to 7 points at half time. Healesville continued their attack in the third and went into the last with a 10 point lead. Healesville ended up coming away with a 12 point win.

Wandin 26.22(178) def Belgrave 8.8(86) This was always going to be a tough ask for Belgrave and Wandin made sure of that from the outset. A six goal to 3 first quarter set the scene for the day. Scott Dwyer was in scintillating form kicking 9, whilst Tom Stubley was a bit of a loan soldier up forward for Belgrave. Wandin sit fourth after this week and take on Upwey Tecoma in Round 6.

Olinda Ferny Creek 21.21(147) def Emerald 9.4(58) Olinda and Emerald were fairly even after the first and the Bombers would have been happy with the scoreline at quarter time. Olinda was just warming up and kicked an impressive 9 goals in the second while keeping Emerald goalless. The game was all over at half time and it was really only Olinda by how much and the score could have been higher if Olinda had the GPS (Goal Penetration Seeker) turned on. Caillin Porter was a focus up forward for the Bombers but the ball was just not getting up there.

Upwey Tecoma 14.12(96) def Monbulk 10.23(83) This game certainly turned out to be the contest

of the round. Monbulk had 10 scoring shots to 7 in the first but only had an 8 point lead. They kicked 4.6 in the second, extending their lead to 23 points but would have been disappointed with their 7.13 scoreline. Upwey got the upper hand in the third and added 4.2 to 1.3 to only be down by 6 points. Monbulk need to hit the track and do some goal kicking drills. Upwey were just better and kicked 6.2 to a disappointing 2.7.

Wandin got the jump on Belgrave and had a 6 goal lead at quarter time. Turnovers are not easy to come by and Wandin ended up winning comfortably by 21 goals.

Mount Evelyn 51 def Healesville 36 Mount Evelyn took a slim lead into the second quarter but extended that to 12 goals at half time. Sarah Graffen and Rachael Hickey were consistent under the ring but Healesville just could not just get the run on play they needed to try and peg them back.

Woori kicked 5.6 in the first to Warburton’s 3 behinds and it was always going to be catch up footy for Warby. A 40 point lead at half time had the game sewn up. At half time Warby’s score was 1.4. Not good enough if you want to be competitive and be taken seriously.

Thornton just had no answers for the older heads of Gembrook. Dan Leversha and Ricky Causer were creating havoc. A 54 point lead at qtr time saw the game all but over and a 90-point victory made it a tough day at the office for the Shinboners.

The Demons came out in the third with more drive and kicked 4.2 to 3.4 and reduced Seville’s lead to 13 points. If Powelltown were going to win they were going to have to pull a rabbit out of the hat. They managed 4 rabbits but also got 8 shockers to come away with a hard-fought 12 point win.

Yarra Glen have the next two weeks off and then take on Yea in Round 7.

Yea 28.17(185) def Yarra Junction 10.15(75) Yea were relentless in their demolition job of Yarra Junction on Saturday. The first quarter was reasonably even with Yea taking a 21 point lead into the second quarter. Yea switched it on in the second and kicked an amazing 13.2 to Junction’s 2.5.

Spaulding and Hancock were the best for Junction but needed more support during the day.

Emerald 21.12(138) def Yarra Glen 3.3(21) Yarra Glen was one game clear of Emerald before this game and had the opportunity to consolidate themselves in the top five but Emerald played a clean and solid team game on Saturday to beat Yarra Glen by a staggering 117 points. Emerald had 11 goal kickers while Yarra Glen had only 3 and that was all they managed all day.

Bianca Daniels was resolute under the ring for Warby while Shannon Gray did everything she could to try and get the points for Woori.

Greenstone Division 2 A Grade Seville 45 def Powelltown 11 Seville got off to a flyer and took a 12 goal lead into the second. Powelltown had no answers for the spearheads of Zoe Abbruzzese and Rachael Goulding. Seville sit atop the ladder on percentage only and are always hard to beat.

Yarra Glen 45 def Alexandra 24 It was always going to be a big ask for Alexandra.

Yarra Glen only held a 4 goal lead at qtr time but came out full of run in the second and shot 25 goals to 9 to take a 10 goal lead at the main break.

Yarra Junction 35 def Yea 28 Yarra Junction took a handy lead of 7 goals into the second. Yea clawed their way back to a 5 goal deficit at the end of the 3rd but it was not enough and could not stop the run and passing of Yarra Junction in the last. These two are now all tied up on the season ladder.

Captain Dean sets sail - no rain, but wind aplenty

By DENNIS FULLER EMERALD GOLF THE rain was turned off but the fans were switched to 'full' at Emerald Golf Club last Saturday with the annual trial of bisque par on the agenda.

A field of the willing set sail for this great adventure but it was Captain Dean Shannon (15) on the Good Ship Bisque who won the day. He had to

withstand the exacting scrutiny of the wise ones when his +5 did the job in a three way countback.

Philip Crossley (19) and Seppy Krummenacher (21) also scored +5 but it was Crossley whose score card stood tall to win the B Grade gong. Krummenacher lost all chances but pretended to be gracious in defeat.

Ken Sumsion (26) and Peter Glass-

cock (16) both scores +4, John Keys (17) +3 and Ian Scott (25) and Jeffrey Marsh (22) both managed +2 with the rest hiding in shame in the naughty corner. Peter Clowes was nearest the pin on the 4th, Dave Aitken the 7th, Crossly the 12th, Dennis Fuller the 3rd and Ken Hill, once again, pocketed the pro pin cash on the 18th.

Despite many complaints from the

women about the bisque par format, it was left to Stephanie Town to show how it should be played with a meritorious victory.

Wednesday’s Obviously Fabled Golf (OFG) was a stableford event which seemed to tickle the golfing fancy of Ken Hill when he rolled in with 43 points followed by John Keys with 42. A massive swing of golfers includ-

ing Moss Fuller, Sepp Krummenacher, Peter Clowes, Philip Crossley and Ian Scott all played to their handicaps for 36 points.

The handicap pennant team hosted Growling Frog on Sunday and steeled themselves for a fight. But the local lads rose to the top, like good cream, when they won 8/0 to set themselves up to play in the final once again.

AFL Yarra Ranges has announced the Senior squad for the 2016 Worksafe AFL Vic Country Community Championships to be held at Healesville on Saturday, 21 May against the Mornington Peninsula/Nepean League.

The competition, playing under a new format of country vs metro for the first time, will bring together the region’s best football and netball talent on the region’s premier ground.

AFL Yarra Ranges CEO, Luke McCormick, said it was an exciting line-up with the league having the pick of almost every player from across the region for the first time in a number of years.

“We run an Under 18 competition while Nepean has Under 19s, so we are also able to choose from our players in the age group who are currently playing in our senior competition,” Mr McCormick said.

“Given the talent of netball in our region, that is also going to be a very strong competition.

“There is no doubt that this is a great time to come and watch regional football at the very highest standard.”

The competition comprises 17 and Under and Open netball, at 11am and 12.15pm and Under 19 and Senior football at 11am and 2pm.

With less than a week to go, the Senior squad has been pared down to players from across the league, representing 15 clubs.

Three Bridges will host Enduro racing

BY RUSSELL COLVIN SOME of Victoria’s best enduro motorcycle racers will battle it out in the Yamaha Victorian Off-Road Championship (VORC) at Sanders Apple Orchard farm in Three Bridges on 28 and 29 May. Rounds three and four for the Women’s, 19s and under juniors will be played out along with round two and three for the seniors, which will see them fire back into action since the first weekend of March competition at Rawson.

Leading the way in the Pro/ Outright championship is Three Bridges’ champion Daniel ‘Chucky’ Sanders, who was quite simply in a class of his own at Rawson.

The reigning two times Pro and Outright VORC champion told the Mail that he was pretty confident heading into the next round of the VORC, even though it will be the first race since he hurt his left ankle at the last round of the Australian Off-Road Championship (AORC) at Murray Bridge in April.

“I’m looking forward to the next round of the VORC,” said Sanders.

“The opening round was great and

since then we have enjoyed some good results in the AORC, which gives me a lot of confidence heading into the Three Bridges’ round.”

Sanders also added that it would be good to see some local faces out at Three Bridges to see what he and other riders do.

Sanders isn’t the only one flying the flag for the Yarra Valley region, with 18-year-old young gun Lyndon Snodgrass from Gladysdale in on the action.

Snodgrass finished sixth in the opening round of the VORC. While rating round one as ‘okay’, he conceded he didn’t get the results that he was after.

In saying that, Snodgrass did have little preparation before the curtain-raiser round, but after a solid few rounds in this year’s AORC series he said that he is feeling good ahead round two and three of the VORC. “It’s good to have a local race on the calendar, so it should be a great event,” Snodgrass said.

“While round one wasn’t anything to write home about, I’m looking to improve on my sixth position and hopefully score some good

A gruelling three-hour cross country format will take place on the Saturday, while on Sunday will see riders tackle a Sprint style format

race. Entry to the round is free, with racing igniting into action at 9am on both days at 1020 Little Yarra Road, Three Bridges (between Yarra Junction and Powelltown).

As long as the weather isn’t wet, the round will go ahead.

Decrease in number of our claims

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS DATA released by the RACV shows the number of vehicle collision claims in the Yarra Ranges has declined compared to last year but is still one of the highest claim areas in the state.

Yarra Ranges comes in at number 20 in the top 25 highest claim areas in Victoria despite a 5.3 per cent decrease in the number of claims at this time last year.

In a trend developing over the past five years, most vehicle collisions happen in May. During that period, nine per cent of car collision insurance claims resulted from incidents in the last month of autumn.

RACV General Manager Insurance, Paul Northey said drivers should be aware of high risk times for vehicle accidents.

“Friday is the day when the highest number of collisions occur, with most happening between noon and 6pm,” he said.

Mr Northey noted that in close to a third of all collisions, another party was at fault.

“It is important to anticipate the actions of other motorists and be prepared for any unexpected situations,” he said.

Animals can also surprise motorists, accounting for seven per cent of collisions.

Mr Northey said uninsured motorists potentially faced costly repairs to their vehicle and liability for any damage caused to other vehicles or property in the event of an accident.

“The average cost of collision claims last year was close to $5000, with eleven per cent of claims for total loss and 64 per cent for repairs,” he said.

Rats, tatts ... and chrome

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS THE Rats, Tatts ’n’ PinUps show was held over the weekend of Saturday 14 May and showcased the best of Kustom Cars, Bikes and Rockabilly the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges has to offer.

The show was held at the York on Lilydale and featured bands from all over the country for a massive custom cars, bikes and rockabilly party.

York on Lilydale Venue Manager Leigh Mountford said the day was a huge success.

“There would have been 5000 people here throughout the day,” he said.

“We had a band called ‘The Lincolns’ fly in from interstate, as well as seven other bands throughout the day.”

The show also included about 1000 cars on display with prizes for the best hot rods, live tattooing and barbering, driving simulators, lots of motorbikes and food and trader stalls.

Rough, tough ... and now, as dead as the dodo

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS TOYOTA will say goodbye to the FJ Cruiser in August after more than 11,000 of the rugged machines were purchased since it burst onto the scene in 2011.

The FJ Cruiser was inspired by Toyota’s classic FJ40 and the FJ Cruiser was developed as a basic, capable and affordable vehicle aimed specifically at serious offroaders looking to push the limits.

Toyota Australia’s executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the FJ Cruiser built on more than half a century of Toyota tradition in producing tough off-road vehicles.

“The FJ rides into the sunset as a vehicle renowned for its ability to traverse rugged outback trails while offering plenty of utility for all types of activities and being equally well-suited for everyday driv-

ing," Mr Cramb said.

The FJ Cruiser was considered an instant classic as it drew on design elements from the FJ40 such as front grille with two round headlights, the bonnet and wheel-arch contours and a rear-mounted and exposed full-size spare tyre.

After its first year of production in Australia, the FJ Cruiser won 4x4 Australia magazine’s 4x4 of the Year title.

Judges said the FJ Cruiser proved to be the “real deal" with its “well-proven and robust mechanicals".

The FJ Cruiser will be fondly remembered by Mr Cramb, who said it had been a great addition to the Toyota brand.

“It will leave lasting memories as one of the most iconic vehicles in Toyota’s rich SUV history, helping to bring renewed energy to the Toyota brand," he said.

The Toyota FJ Cruiser will be no longer this year. 154287
