Property payback BOOMING property values will cause doubledigit rate rises in some Greater Dandenong suburbs - but other property owners will see a drop in their rates bill.

The State Government-imposed 2.5 per cent average rate rise comes into play for the council’s 2016-’17 draft budget which was released for public comment on Monday 9 May. The council’s acting CEO Mick Jaensch said Dandenong and Dandenong North properties looked set to experience lower rates as property values there generally increased by less than the 24 per cent average.

“Suburbs such as Springvale, Springvale South, Noble Park and Keysborough all had above-average increases in their valuations,” he said.

“Some could have double digit increases easily.”

The average increase across the municipality will be $34.90 a year, or 66 cents per week.

Mr Jaensch said that without a cap in place, the rate rise would have been 5.5 per cent and generated another $3 million for capital works.

“We’ve got some major projects that we’re currently working on at present,” he said.

“There’s no one single thing that has necessarily missed out.

“All the directorates have had to tighten their belts.”

The budget included $8.65 million for the Springvale Civic Precinct, including the Springvale Town Hall redevelopment.

“That’s going to receive a really major facelift which will be really noticeable for the users of the hall,” Mr Jaensch said.

Works are due to start in October and finish before June next year.

The council allocated $3.3 million towards a new pavilion, car park and access road at Keysborough’s Tatterson Park, plus $3.26 million for the project from the Federal and State governments.

“Next year’s budget there’ll be another allocation for another $3-odd million,” he said.

“Those two ovals are MCG-sized football ovals.

“They’re really, really well-used yet we don’t have a pavilion to go with it.

“I think it will be a real jewel.”

Mr Jaensch said the budget also included $1.57 million for the Robert Booth Reserve pavilion upgrade and $1.44 million for Alex Nelson Reserve Pavilion redevelopment, with the State Government chipping in $100,000 towards each.

“We’ve been a council that progressively over the last four or five years that have continued to upgrade at least one pavilion a year,” he said.

A $400,000 allocation to Local Area Traffic Management will tackle issues in Dandenong North’s Devira Street, Besley Street in Dandenong, Titcher Road in Noble Park North, and Springvale’s Regent Avenue.

Councillors at the 9 May meeting added to the budget a $35,000 bill for a ‘wombat crossing’ in Menzies Avenue, Dandenong.

Mr Jaensch said the decision came too late to be included in the draft budget on public display and it would be up to councillors to determine where the cash would be taken from.

The recommendation in the agenda was for the council to find money for the project during the 2016-’17 mid-year budget review.

But councillor Matthew Kirwan pushed for it to be brought forward.

“Recent improvements to the hall and the reserve facilities as well as the significant decrease in crime in this area, has meant that this precinct has had families flooding back,” he said.

He said residents asked for a roundabout at Curtin Crescent and Menzies Avenue and speed humps along Menzies Avenue leading up to the precinct.

Budget submissions close on Wednesday 8 June.

Councillors will pass the final budget on Monday 27 June.

Heat's on weed killing “WHAT price do you place on a child’s life? What do you say to parents who lose their child?”

Greater Dandenong councillor Maria Sampey’s voice cracked with emotion as she spoke these words at the Monday 9 May council meeting.

Her eyes filled with tears as she pleaded for a further steam weeding trial at council playgrounds, spurred on by concerns that the herbicides currently used could cause cancer.

Cr Sean O’Reilly, with support from Cr Angela Long, moved an alternative motion to quash plans for the $20,000 project.

“I don’t think this council should be spending money on something that we’ve already showed to be not as effective as chemicals,” he said.

But Cr Sampey gained support from her other colleagues to fund the 12-month non-chemical weed management trial in selected high-use playgrounds from 1 July.

The World Health Organisation’s cancer agency recently reclassified the routinely-used herbicide glyphosate as probably cancer-causing to humans.

“If Cr O’Reilly doesn’t want to protect his child, then I will be a voice for your child,” Cr Sampey said.

But a recent report from University of New South Wales’ Dr Bernard Stewart said “glyphosate isn’t actually dangerous at the levels at which children, or the incidental park passers-by, are exposed”.

This latest council motion followed a trial at four Greater Dandenong sites between 1 April and 11 August last year.

Council officers reported positive results, but said weed growth was slow at that time of year, low rainfall resulted in low germination rates, and time-consuming hand-weeding also took place.

The pilot cost of $4800 is more than 11 times the current $416 weed removal price-tag.

Officers concluded that steam weeding as

an alternative to chemicals was cost-prohibitive “without a more comprehensive and longer-duration study”.

Cr O’Reilly said he didn’t think anybody thought the second trial “will come back and say steam weeding is more effective than chemicals” and shrugged off health concerns.

“The playgrounds aren’t drenched in chemicals - only where there are weeds is it applied,” he said.

Cr Matthew Kirwan said several European countries had banned or restricted glyphosatebased herbicide due to alleged links with birth defects, kidney failure, celiac disease, colitis and autism.

“I think exploring alternatives to glyphosatebased herbicides is very important, and so continuing the trial is very important,” he said.

“Greater Dandenong should be a leader in it and I commend Cr Sampey for her continued persistence on this issue.”

Summit rises above the bad street gang reputation

Guns, a jet ski and motorbikes were among the stolen items that police recovered during a raid in Noble Park.

Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Sergeant Luke Kirton said officers executed a search warrant in Winston Court on Friday 29 April.

They seized seven stolen motorbikes, two trailers, a jet ski, power tools and some firearms.

Det Sgt Kirton said they’d identified owners for most items but were appealing for the owners of a white box-style trailer and a black and white dirt bike to come forward.

Three men were interviewed and charged with offences including handling stolen goods and firearm possession.

A 33-year-old from Doveton and a 34-yearold from Noble Park were bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 16 June.

A 38-year-old from Dandenong was bailed to face Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 29 June.

Students used recent outcry about a proposed mosque in Narre Warren to examine the importance of building knowledge and understanding.

A Noble Park home has been caught up in the Panama Papers secret finances scandal.

Taiwanese company Apex Optech Corporation’s 58 shareholders listed the Corrigan Road unit as their address, the leaked financial documents revealed on Tuesday 10 May. An anonymous whistle-blower leaked 11.5 million documents from Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca to a German newspaper.

The leak has snared several high profile figures since it was publicised on 3 April.

On Thursday it was revealed that Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull was listed as a director of an offshore company and in April British Prime Minister David Cameron admitted he had benefitted from a tax haven fund. Both entities were set up by Mossack Fonseca.

The Panama Papers revealed that Mossack Fonseca registered Apex Optech in the British Virgin Islands tax haven.

It’s not known if the company still exists but Taiwanese business FOCI Fiber Optic Communications International was among its shareholders and remains in business.

The Journal attempted to contact the Noble Park home’s occupant but they did not respond.

Ms Fagan said students wrote their stories on the boats, which would form one large artwork to be displayed in the Dandenong Library windows.

“We’re hoping to reproduce them on a postcard and send to some of the kids who participated to foster ongoing dialogue,” she said.

“This is just one forum to be able to talk about these sorts of things.”

THE Apex gang has been dominating headlines but was not a talking point at the annual City of Greater Dandenong Youth Summit.

The almost 200 year 10 students from across the municipality did, however, raise the “bad rap” the region was receiving.

United in Diversity was the theme for the day-long discussion at Springvale Town Hall on Thursday 5 May. The council’s youth and community development team leader Aishling Fagan said the event was designed to explore issues impacting the teens and how to alleviate them.

Anti-social behaviour did come up, she said, but the recent spike in youths involved in Apex gang-linked burglaries and car thefts “wasn’t specifically raised”.

“They did talk about one or two incidents that undermine that positive stuff young people are engaged in,” she said.

“They feel that Greater Dandenong gets a bad rap, undeservedly so.

“That given the diversity of culture it’s amazing what a harmonious society they live in.”

Ms Fagan said the students spoke about how a sense of connection and belonging was so important.

“It’s incumbent on all of us to reach out,” she said.

“It’s about how we draw young people in who may be on the periphery.

“Often it’s a small number but what’s projected out there is that it’s a significant issue.

“It’s about putting young people front and centre in the conversation.”

Young leaders spoke to the students about their experiences, encouraging them to take a risk and make the most of opportunities.

Ms Fagan said the students then spoke about what it meant to belong.

“Then we touched on racism and discrimination,” she said.

“There are isolated incidents, of course, and we looked at how to chip away at some of that stuff.”

A toy gun sparked a quick arrest outside Centrelink in Springvale.

Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Sergeant Luke Kirton said police were called to Springvale Road about 4pm on Wednesday 4 May. He said a 27-year-old Noble Park man was allegedly walking down the street with what appeared to be a military-style firearm, pointing it at passers-by.

“He tried to rob someone with the firearm outside Centrelink,” Det Sgt Kirton said.

“He walked to Westall Road, continuing to point the firearm at passing vehicles.”

Police responded quickly following calls from the public, he said, arresting the man without incident.

He said the man had modified the fake firearm with electrician’s tape “to give it a more authentic-looking appearance”.

Cash in blistered hands was my first taste of capitalism in short trousers Jack Johnson is the author of When The Clock Strikes, a fascinating account of growing up in Dandenong, his years tending to the city’s pipes and drains as a plumber and bringing up a family with wife Frances in their beloved home in Macpherson Street.

I was always on the lookout for ways to earn money.

Mr and Mrs Drake, who were friends of mum and dad, lived in a redbrick house on land that was once part of Thuruna’s land opposite the end of Stud Road.

Mr Drake drove some of Grenda’s first buses and he kept a passenger bus in his garage.

Those first Grenda’s buses were forerunners of the larger parlour coaches or charabancs.

These were possibly the first motorised means of transport after the horse-drawn stage coaches.

Parlour coaches met the steam trains at Dandenong station and took passengers to Tooradin and other places.

I remember that house had a large open back yard and as a 10-year-old I earned about seven

My job was to dig up the whole back yard and prepare it for a vegetable garden.

I worked there after school and on weekends.

I raised a few painful blisters, but when the job was finished and I was heading home, it was amazing how soothing those silver coins were on my blistered hands.

Mr Drake gave me another sixpence because of the extra work done when I dug up a small tip in the middle of the yard.

It was full of old bottles and cans and all sorts of household items that remained from the bon-

Across a wide McCrae Street road reserve from our house at number 88 was Roseneath, the home of Doctor and Mrs Langley and their daughter, who later married Doctor Hart.

Looking Back 100 years ago 4 May 1916 The Red Cross Dispute Public Meeting cancelled At a meeting of the Dandenong Shire Council on 27 April 1916, Dr F E Langley notified that a deputation desired to be heard in regard to Red Cross affairs - quite a formidable deputation, numbering between 30 and 40 members of the Red Cross.

The president inquired as to the number of speakers as the council had a lengthy business paper to deal with.

Dr Langley replied that there were three speakers and that he had been asked to attend the council meeting to speak on behalf of the Red Cross committee and to protest against the proposed public meeting.

I am instructed by the chairman of the State War Council to inform you that in issuing the regulations recently enacted on the

streets and its lefts side neighbour on McCrae Street was Briarhurst, the former home of Doctor Phillips.

An architect-designed house of red machinemade bricks, Roseneath was originally built for Sir Samuel Gillot, a former member of Parliament. This property fascinated us.

Its only entrances were from McCrae Street where it had two driveways.

The one to the house was along the side of the house, via a gravel drive which led from iron gates that had the name of the house formed in them.

This gateway was set in a brick columned fence with iron panels.

On the left of the drive was some of the last remaining native bush in central Dandenong.

The second driveway was through double wooden gates in a high paling fence that ran from McCrae Street, along Power and into New Street, where it finished just past the high wire-netting tennis court fence.

This paling fence enclosed what we called Langley’s paddock.

Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society subject of war patriotic funds, the war council did not contemplate any action against the continuance of existing Red Cross or patriotic committees, or interference with the funds which they may have collected, nor was it contemplated that the existing committees should require to obtain authority either of the War Council or of mayors or presidents to continue their good works.

A motion was carried not to interfere in the Red Cross committee, as they had done well and mange the work better than the council.

Instead of the public meeting, the council thought they would keep faith with the public by giving them a picture show.

20 years ago 13 May 1996 Ethnic mix grows Springvale has the state’s highest rate of migrant settlement and Dandenong is in the top 10, according to a new report released last week by the Office of Ethnic Affairs.

Springvale received 4479 migrants between 1991 and 1995 and Dandenong received 1945.

In the past four years, Victoria accepted 35,790 migrants on humanitarian grounds. “Newly-arrived migrants face two big hurdles – finding accommodation and employment,” Springvale Commu-

nity Aid and Advice Bureau manager Teresa Bednall said.

She said Springvale was a favoured area for settlement because race relations were “relatively good” and there was an abundance of unskilled jobs.

5 years ago 16 May 2011 SOS on wayward youth A Sudanese community group is pleading for help to get its wayward young people back on the rails.

Last Thursday, the Noble Park-based Sudanese Community Association of Australia met with Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Luke Cornelius over concerns that the community couldn’t control some groups of young people falling into alcohol and violence.

SLAC has been anything but slack over the past 70 years.

The Springvale Learning and Activities Centre has been building community connections since it opened as the Springvale Youth Club in 1945.

It’s evolved alongside its community to remain relevant and meet its needs.

To celebrate its achievements, SLAC launched the book Building Community Connections: 70 Years of Doing it Right, during National Volunteer Week and Neighbourhood House Week.

Staff, students and committee members from today and years past gathered at the Osborne Avenue centre on Wednesday 11 May. They were treated to a boot-scooting performance from SLAC line-dancers and a dramatic portrayal from Springvale and District Historical Society of returning World War II soldiers finding purpose at the youth club.

Committee president Leah Douglas and Joe de Souza, the 1974 president, cut a book-shaped cake to launch the publication, which features personal recollections, Journal newspaper clippings and photographs from SLAC’s journey.

Mr de Souza said he “felt old and a little bit out of place” when he arrived but a warm welcome quickly changed that.

“Memories of the 12 years of my association came flooding back,” he said.

“I felt quite humble and at the same time proud to receive acknowledgment of the small part I played in helping my community and the youth club progress to where it now stands.

“The work we did so willingly now means a great deal when I see the giant steps taken to be the successful operation it is today.”

Ms Douglas started her association with SLAC with a calisthenics class at the age of four.

She moved on to jazz ballet, gymnastics and more and even worked there during her teens.

Greater Dandenong councillors have reversed their decision to wave minimum parking requirements for a new Springvale development.

At their 26 April meeting they approved a permit for a five-storey building with three shops and 28 apartments at 51 Buckingham Avenue.

This was despite the application being nine visitor car parking spots short of the minimum requirement.

Councillor Sean O’Reilly’s bid to remove that provision was lost in a split-vote where Mayor Heang Tak had to cast the decider.

“I’m sure our compliance officers don’t need the extra work,” he said.

Cr Maria Sampey argued that the council only provided 40 spaces at its own civic centre for hundreds of staff and Cr Jim Memeti said the car park at 8 Balmoral Avenue was built to accommodate “stuff like this”.

But at the 9 May meeting, councillors rescinded the decision despite strong opposition from a riled-up Cr Youhorn Chea.

He argued that the council would receive $19,000 from the developer for each missing car parking space, and that Number 8 was less than five minutes away.

Cr Sampey agreed, pointing out that the council was trying to encourage more people to walk and that not everyone owned a car.

But Cr O’Reilly said that “anyone who says that visitors will park at Number 8 are absolutely dreaming”.

“Visitors will take the closest park,” he said.

Cr Matthew Kirwan said Number 8 should be saved to accommodate expected retail growth and that most visitors wouldn’t take public transport like they did to Dandenong.

“Springvale Railway Station isn’t a bus hub where you can get to a wide array of suburbs like you can with Dandenong Railway Station,” he said.

Thon was also charged over not paying for a $30.40 chicken meal with lemonade at a Morwell eatery in July.

An aggressively drunk Thon told police at the time there was nothing wrong with the meal. He just didn’t have enough money to pay.

Thon’s lawyer said alcohol was the “recurring theme” of the accused’s offending, especially since a relationship breakdown in 2006.

Thon had been previously convicted and named on the sex offenders’ register for eight years due to incidents at Flinders Street and Pakenham railway stations in 2013 and 2014 and also convicted of drink-driving several times up to four times the legal limit.

“When you have such repetitive offending, you have to protect the community from him.

“There’s an innocent person in the community right now who will be affected by (Thon).”

Mr Vandersteen gave a sentence indication of 18 months jail, with a non-parole period of six months - if Thon pleaded guilty.

Parole was the only way to adequately supervise and engage Thon in alcohol rehabilitation, Mr Vandersteen said.

Thon was likely to be disqualified from driving for at least five years, Mr Vandersteen said.

The accused was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 16 May.

A registered sex offender caught in Dandenong faced jail for a series of alcohol-fuelled offences, including drink driving up to six times the legal limit.

Peter Deng Thon had been arrested after moving from his registered address in Swan Hill without notifying police, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told on 9 May. On one of his drink-drives, Thon allegedly spun his vehicle 180-degrees approaching a redlight camera intersection in Traralgon.

He blamed an under-inflated tyre for the manoeuvre and blew 0.204 - more than four times the legal limit for most drivers but Thon was on a zero-alcohol licence condition.

He was also driving without a required alcohol-interlock at the time.

In June, drivers boxed in Thon’s car due to his erratic driving, including wildly varying speeds and near side-swipings.

When stopped, Thon punched witnesses, struggled with police and blew 0.3.

He was a suspended driver at the time, also in breach of his interlock condition.

In March 2015, an alcohol-effected Thon was also charged with entering a Laverton home without permission.

Fierce fight in the Battle for Bruce

By CASEY NEILL The battle for Bruce is shaping up as Greater Dandenong’s tightest federal election contest.

It’s among three seats where the municipality’s residents will cast their votes on 2 July.

Big swings would be required to oust the Australian Labor Party (ALP) incumbents in Isaacs and Hotham - 3.9 per cent and 7.3 per cent respectively.

But in Bruce the margin sits at just 1.8 per cent, meaning the seat would change hands if roughly one in 100 people changed their minds from the 2013 poll.

Making things even more interesting, Labor’s sitting member Alan Griffin is retiring and his Liberal opponent from the 2013 election Emanuele Cicchiello isn’t recontesting.

So the electorate will have two new faces to choose from - Julian Hill for the ALP and Helen

Kroger for the Liberal Party.

Bruce includes Dandenong North, Noble Park North and parts of Dandenong, Noble Park and Springvale.

Mr Griffin has held the seat since 1996 but it was previously in Liberal hands since 1972 and he experienced a 5.9 per cent swing against him after preferences at the last election.

Mr Hill grew up in Melbourne’s south-east and lived as a single parent for many years.

He was elected to Port Phillip Council at age 25, worked for the outgoing Mr Griffin for five years and has held senior positions within the Victorian Public Service.

Ms Kroger was a Victorian senator between 2007 and 2014 and has experience in philanthropic and community organisations, small business, human resources and education.

Isaacs MP Mr Dreyfus experienced a 6.5 per cent swing against him after preferences at the 2013 election.

His opponent, the Liberal Party’s Garry Spencer, will again contest the seat, alongside Greens candidate Alex Breskin.

Isaacs has been in ALP hands since 1996 and includes Dandenong South, Keysborough and parts of Noble Park.

Mr Dreyfus was previously a barrister and was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1999.

Mr Spencer served in the Australian Defence Force as a combat soldier and military technology specialist for more than 20 years, and now works as a management consultant in his own practice.

Mr Breskin works as a software engineer for a small business and is the secretary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Australia.

Clare O’Neil kept Hotham in ALP hands following party stalwart Simon Crean’s retirement at the last election, but there was a 6.7 per cent swing to the Liberal Party after preferences were distributed.

This time Ms O’Neil will take on Liberal candidate George Hua and The Greens’ James Bennett.

The seat has been in ALP hands since 1980 and includes Springvale South and parts of Keysborough, Noble Park and Springvale.

At the age of 23 Ms O’Neil became the youngest female mayor in Australian history, just a year after being elected to represent Springvale South on the City of Greater Dandenong Council.

Mr Hua arrived in Australia in 2007 from Shanghai to study computer science at Monash University and is now a senior software engineer.

Mr Bennett was an education access worker in the university sector, is passionate about supporting young people with disabilities and has a strong faith.

Police are searching for this vehicle and its driver.

Hunt after hit-run Police believe a white ute seen in CCTV footage was involved in a deliberate Dandenong hit-run.

Investigators released the footage on Thursday 12 May and appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

The Journal reported on 19 April that a driver had deliberately run down two people on a Dandenong footpath and fled the scene.

Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Sergeant Luke Kirton said a vehicle mounted the kerb on Wilma Avenue near Marion Street just after 10am on Friday 15 April.

It struck a 41-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman from behind and did not stop.

An ambulance took both victims to The Alfred hospital, the man with broken ribs and the woman with cuts and bruises.

Police said both were now home and recovering well.

“The incident is believed a deliberate act to run them down,” Sgt Kirton said.

“There was nothing to suggest the driver tried to brake or take evasive action.”

The vehicle, believed to be a Mitsubishi utility, left the scene and continued north along Wilma Avenue.

POLICE are searching for a woman in relation to a car theft and arson in Dandenong North.

Greater Dandenong CIU detectives said she attended a service station on the corner of Stud and Heatherton roads about 6.30am on Monday 28 March.

She allegedly tried to use a stolen credit card to buy cigarettes but the transaction was declined.

Police said she soon left the shop and stole a Nissan X-Trail four-wheel drive that a delivery driver had left running in the car park.

The vehicle was found about 7am, dumped and burnt out in Fair Court, Dandenong North.

Couple go their separate days

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A husband-and-wife will be working in their Springvale business on separate days after the man throttled his wife in a drunken attack.

The 42-year-old man - with no prior convictions - has been barred from within five metres of the wife as a result of a court-enforced 12-month intervention order on 9 May. The day before, the man was drunk on 200ml of Scotch when the victim arrived at their Hampton Park home about 4.30pm, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told.

After abuse and threats, the man punched her in the ear and struck her several times to the arm with a small garden tool.

She was grabbed around the throat twice and told by the man that “I will kill you”.

The man let go his grip when the couple’s two children intervened.

Early on 9 May, the man was served a familyviolence safety notice, barring him from within 200 metres of the family home.

At 1.15am he was spotted in a taxi within the 200-metre exclusion zone. He claimed he had told the driver where he lived but not to drive to the family home.

He blacked out during the ride but had intend-

ed to stay with his cousin in Lynbrook, the man told police.

The accused was arrested, spent the night in police cells and fronted Dandenong Magistrates’ Court that day.

Defence lawyer Adam Maloney told the court the couple’s Springvale business would fail if the husband was banned from the workplace.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said the assault was serious, particularly because the alleged strangulation “exponentially” increased the risk of the wife being killed or injured.

He noted the accused’s “shock an awe” at being in the dock.

Mr Vandersteen said he’d add to the intervention order that the husband stay away from the workplace if drunk.

The man pleaded guilty to four charges, was convicted and put on a 12-month community corrections order (CCO) and an intervention order.

The CCO includes supervision, alcohol and mental health treatment, and offender behaviour programs.

The man argued against a conviction because it could affect his registration as an immigration agent.

“Not with strangulation and a breach of a family violence order,” Mr Vandersteen replied.

“You can always appeal my decision if you wish.”

Gift helps to offer a warm welcome A food truck serving up much more than meals has received a $4800 boost.

The Federation of Chinese Organisations from Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos Association of Victoria made the donation to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) at Harmony Square in Dandenong on Sunday 1 May. The federation held an Australia Day celebration at the Happy Reception in Ascot Vale which included fund-raising for the ASRC Food Justice

Truck to commemorate 40 years of the Indo-China community settling in Australia.

The Food Justice Truck will start serving meals in Dandenong later this year.

“We hope that the small contribution from the community would help to kick start the essential service for many new asylum seeker families in the area,” the federation’s president Tommy Huynh said.

Faith made stronger by diversity

By CASEY NEILL New arrivals gained a taste of Greater Dandenong’s diversity and formed community connections through tours to places of worship.

Greater Dandenong Interfaith Network development officer Helen Heath said the Office of Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship (OMAC) and Greater Dandenong Council funded four bus trips.

The network regularly runs similar tours for the general public with outings scheduled for Wednesdays 8 June, 10 August, 12 October and 14 December.

“One of the initial aims of the interfaith tours program was to train asylum seekers or refugees as volunteer tour guides, providing an opportunity to be positively engaged in social activities while learning about different faiths and in turn teaching others about their own,” she said.

“However, this proved a challenging task in just encouraging participants to join these tours.

“So the focus shifted to conducting tours and

trying to encourage diverse groups of participants to join in.”

Part of the funding included filmmaker Richard Leigh attending the tours to share stories from participants.

“The aim of the film primarily is to educate the community about the challenge of being a new arrival, particularly as an asylum seeker or refugee in the local Dandenong area, and for participants to feel free and able to tell their stories,” Ms Heath said.

On the first tour on 12 November were eight Burmese women and their three small children, and four Afghan community members.

“Everyone seemed to enjoy the time and by the end of the tour had met and engaged with new people - both each other on the bus and the communities that welcomed them - and had learnt something of the different faiths, food and culture of those two communities in the City of Greater Dandenong,“ Ms Heath said.

Potty about Mother’s Day plants Roy Schirmer is still as passionate about potting as when he started Karinga Nursery more than 40 years ago.

The Keysborough business sends out about 750,000 plants each year, including 150,000 chrysanthemums for Mother’s Day. Roy’s mum wasn’t among those to receive one of the blooms – she’s seen more than her fair share over the years.

“Mum’s 90 years old, and she still works with us,” he said.

She was a factory worker when Roy convinced his dad to buy land on Keys Road to grow the business and invited her to join the team.

Family friend Bill Gilchrist, then aged 83, had harnessed an 18-year-old Roy’s passion for potting, inviting him to start a nursery with him in 1973.

“We had a small glasshouse area where we grew some cuttings and shrubs,” he said.

“Then I proceeded with contacting some supermarkets in those days.

“We, after I was there for a couple of years, had some big orders from Kmart and Coles and Woolworths.

“I told my dad we needed to buy some land.

“We bought this land here. We sold our little house in East Bentleigh – we sold the house for $17,000 and bought this for $39,000.

“My dad, he used to work down at the wharf as a supervisor. In the mornings, we potted plants.

In the afternoon he would go to work.”

Roy was 21 when they moved onto the Keys Road paddock.

“There were a couple of nurseries closing down. We bought two glasshouses for $50,” he said.

“The glasshouse was one thing, but we needed some plastic igloos.

“We were very short on cash, so we used to buy lengths of pipe and bend them around an old tank and put them in the ground.

“We never had money for wood, so we dug a trench and put the plastic in the ground.

“We never had money for a door, so we wrapped up a piece of plastic around a stick and put it on two three-inch nails.

“We started with nothing but passion.

“I was a little kid at the market with my broken-down truck just selling my little pot-plants in the rain.”

Roy did an apprenticeship at a technical

school, but said talking was the key to growing his knowledge to match his passion.

“You learn more from chatting than reading books, almost, and being on-site with people who could show you what to do,” he said.

Roy has a 10-strong team, plus calls in casual workers from the local area to help out during peak seasons.

The nursery spans five acres.

“The size we are, it’s a size that can be managed and we’re happy with that size, as a family unit,” he said.

Karinga specialises in four ‘events’, Roy said, Mother’s Day being the biggest.

“Following that we go to spring where we grow tomatoes and popular shrubs, passionfruit and lavenders,” he said.

“Then Christmas we grow the poinsettia for supermarkets, and then Valentines’ Day pot roses.”

Karinga is one of only two main poinsettia growers in Victoria.

“We sell about 100,000 at Christmas in Victoria and South Australia,” he said.

“It’s a European and American thing.

“In the northern hemisphere, the days are getting shorter approaching Christmas.

“The poinsettia are what we call a short-day plant, which means they initiate their flower buds when the days get shorter.

“But in the southern hemisphere, approaching Christmas the days are getting longer.

“We need to completely manipulate the environment by having artificially extended days, extended lights, when they’re planted, and then we have blackout screens to shorten the day length.

“I like all crops, and the challenge of growing crops each year and getting the plants as perfect as you can.”

By CASEY NEILL Danielle Kazi-Shedden is doing things a little differently and picking up plenty of awards along the way.

The Cranbourne 24-year-old will speak about her pathway from VCE to her carpentry career at the Smart Manufacturing ’16 symposia on Tuesday 17 May. The Drum Theatre will host presentations throughout the day as part of the expo-style event that will take over Dandenong’s CBD to promote the region’s capability and capacity.

“I just started in 2009 when I didn’t really know what I was going to do and had no real direction with my career path or anything like that,” she said.

“I did all my exams in year 12 and didn’t get the results I wanted. I didn’t really care about anything back then.

“I ended up being unemployed for nine months after that.”

Danielle eventually landed a job at Jayco in Dandenong South and over the next three years tried her hand at several different roles.

“I came out with a joinery/carpentry sort of interest. From there I was looking for an apprenticeship and found this shop-fitting role with Whytehall.”

Working in a male-dominated industry doesn’t bother her a bit.

“I find it really rewarding,” she said.

“I use it as a positive. I think being the only girl is really good.

“I end up telling them what do.”

Last year she went to her first awards night with Chisholm and won the TAFE’s Building and Construction Apprentice of the Year.

“From there I was nominated for the Master Builders’ award and went for an interview with a panel of five judges and had to do a presentation on myself and tell them why I thought I should be a winner,” she said.

“From there I got an invite to the Master Builders’ awards and won the overall Joinery Apprentice of the Year, Metro Apprentice of the Year, and Victorian State Apprentice of the Year. That was last year, in April.

“I was a little bit in shock at the time, it didn’t really sink in.”

It all happened again this year.

“I won the Chisholm Building and Construction Apprentice of the Year again and the overall Apprentice of the Year. I also won the CEO’s award,” Danielle said.

“It’s provided me with a lot more opportunities and different directions that I want to go with my career now.

“I just got a scholarship to do some more courses with Chisholm so I’m signing up to do a certificate four in building and construction and then, hopefully, I’ll move onto my diploma.”

Ribbon win is his crowning glory

By CASEY NEILL A Springvale pageant fanatic finally got his own time to shine - and sashayed away with a crown and ribbon.

Hung Pham, 21, was recently crowned Mr Diamond Australia.

The pageant is new to Australia and celebrates “the beauty and diversity of individuality”.

“It doesn’t judge on height, experience or sizes so I think it’s a fair go for anyone that competes,” Hung said.

“I just wanted to tick it off my bucket list.

“I’ve watched Miss Universe since I was little and these days I watch every single pageant that you can ever name.”

Hung has assisted and volunteered at pageants but said being on stage was “an adrenaline rush”.

“There was your typical rounds - your resort wear or swimwear and your eveningwear as well,” he said.

“But the most important part of any pageant is your final question.”

Hung answered ‘what is your chosen charity and why?’ with a twist.

“I wanted to be different among all the other six contestants that we had for the male round,” he said.

“I chose a charity and a mission.

“The charity that I represented was the Cancer Council of Victoria.

“I’ve been with the charity for five years now doing lots of event work and fund-raising work.

I didn’t raise a lot of money but I did spread a lot of awareness.”

His mission builds on his work as an ambassador for The Happiness Mission, established by My Kitchen Rules contestants Carly and Tresne

“The main thing that I want to be involved more in is to go out to primary schools and secondary schools to promote health and wellbeing and after leaving school, what they will experience in the real world,” he said.

“I really want to tell them that when they get out of high school that they have got the whole world open to them.

“They can do whatever they want to do, even if their goal is set up very high like me they can achieve it.

“It takes a lot of confidence, passion and determination to get where you want to be.”

His lofty goal?

“To hopefully one day work for the Miss Universe organisation in America. If not, then I would love to work for IMG models in New York,” he said.

Hung has established his own events company called Style Runway Australia.

“I like to interact with the public, I like customer service,” he said.

“I have a very happy and bubbly personality that sometimes I can’t keep down.”

SPORT Charis tackles the hard yards

By JARROD POTTER Never taking a backwards step, Parkmore’s Charis Ulu Peniata made a brand of hard-edged, unrelenting football her signature this week.

Ulu Peniata, 16, has taken Victorian football by storm this year - her first playing the national game.

For a girl less than 18 months into her football career as a whole - whether locally, in the Academy program or now in the national championship winning side - her journey so far has been amazing.

From Parkmore Youth Girls in the South East Juniors and onto the Sandringham Dragons’ Youth Girls Academy, Ulu Peniata’s potential was immediately visible as she charged through the midfield and shrugged off tackles left, right and especially through the centre.

These performances earned her a call up to the Vic Metro ranks for the national championships - and she seized that opportunity firmly, as Ulu Peniata was sent down back and given some of the hardest team tasks.

Not only did she take the challenges on, but she dominated them - setting aside the rest of the country’s best forwards as she ran everything out of the back-line.

Ulu Peniata became renowned for not rushing behinds - despite standing centimetres away from the opposition goal-line under immense pressure.

But she would harness that burden and turn it into her greatest strengths - surging through pack, sidestepping opponents or just throwing them off her if they dared to tackle her.

“It’s great - it’s actually the first time (winning a national championship) and I’m just really happy,” Ulu Peniata said. “It’s only been one year - everything about it is really different and I’m just so surprised that I made it this far.”

Where does her tenacity and determination come from? Home.

“Lost for words right now - I don’t know - I think it just runs in the family,” she said.

Ulu Peniata wanted to thank friends and family for their support of her football ambitions.

Vic Metro coach Wayne Siekman thinks the Parkmore defender’s rise has taken many by surprise but her determination has set her apart from many other footballers in the state.

“She’s come from nowhere, but continues to grow and develop and could be anything in the next two years if she continues to improve her football,” Siekman said.

“As you saw she could have easily conceded a couple of points a couple of times, but she hates losing and hates giving the opposition any sort of advantage - and she’d rather break a tackle on the goal-line than to rush it and give them a point.

All-rounder Sophie keen to show off her spirited side

By JARROD POTTER Returning to the state ranks wiser and more experienced, Dandenong cricketer Sophie Molineux can’t wait to don the VicSpirit top once again.

The 18-year-old’s break-out 2015/16 made her an irresistible prospect for Cricket Victoria, which signed her up for her second season with the state women’s squad.

The Bairnsdale off-spinning all-rounder featured prominently for the Melbourne Renegades in the Women’s Big Bash League, captained and earning a spot in the Governor-General’s XI and captained the Victorian under-18s to a national championship victory.

She also smashed her maiden first XI century early last season to kick things off in the Dandenong colours.

For these reasons and more the Lions’ allrounder received the good news of her VicSpirit re-selection last week and was pumped to get another chance at a state debut.

“It feels amazing - words really can’t describe how much it means to me and I’m really excited for what’s to come,” Molineux said.

“Hopefully I can learn a lot and if the games come, they come, but, hopefully, I can take away a lot of knowledge.”

A little bit more wisdom at the crease and being able to traverse from Bairnsdale to the city a lot easier will hopefully make her second attempt at the navy blue a lot more successful for Molineux.

“Just being two years older - there’s still a long way to go, but being in the system for a couple of years ago gave me a taste of elite female cricket and what I needed to do to get there,” she said.

Drmic’s got a ticket to ride Welcome back Anthony Drmic to Australian basketball after the Dandenong Rangers alumnus signed on with the Adelaide 36ers this week.

The 198cm guard/forward has booked his ticket home for the summer NBL season, but it won’t be to Melbourne.

Instead Drmic, 24, from Endeavour Hills, is off to South Australia after signing a two-year deal to play locally instead of chasing contracts in Europe.

“Signing with Adelaide was an easy choice for me - I feel like I will be able to join and contribute right away especially with how the team is run and there style of play,” Drmic said.

“I wasn’t really sure what I was going to do after the college season but after considering a few different things I decided having my first year back home would be most beneficial for me.

“I’m really looking forward to coming back and showing how I have grown as a player to the Australian basketball scene - it feels like I have been away for so long and that I have something to prove.”

Finishing his fifth and final year at Boise State University, Drmic rattled off 13.4 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game - plus his usual bucketload of treys to finish the school’s all-time leading three point record holder (275).

Endeavour Hills SFL finals hopes are alive

By JARROD POTTER GREATER DANDENONG FOOTBALL REVIEW - ROUND 6 PROVING the old adage, Endeavour Hills showed South Yarra on Saturday that it isn’t over til it’s over.

With the wind at their back in the final term, the Falcons had to overcome a 21-point deficit and a difficult day on the park against the fourthranked Lions.

Nothing was going right for the hosts through the first 10 minutes of the last and that would’ve been enough for most sides to chuck the cue in the rack, but the Falcons had one last push left in them. With Endeavour Hills coach Steve Muscat believing the side’s season was on the line, the final attack began in earnest through a careless 50-metre penalty from South Yarra.

It gave Daniel Strom a difficult set-shot but the defender delivered - cutting the margin to 14.

It went back up the Lions’ end as the visitors booted their last - after a free kick was given in their square - to open up a 20-point lead. Mitch Whatman (five goals) was the Falcon who stood up next and stood out the most as he became the game-changer late in the clash.

He was only up forward for the windward quarters, but in that brief period he delivered.

Whatman roosted the second of the term straight through the uprights from the tip of the arc then a reversed free and 50-metre penalty gave Whatman his second of the term to slice the gap.

Byron Hoe made a crucial intercept mark and booted it to the square where ... guess who ...

Whatman was at the fall of the ball to snap another goal and bring it back to a two-point ball game.

But that wasn’t the last of him - the highlights package needed a fourth-and-final Whatman moment as he found himself on the end of a longbomb from Matthew Peake, snapping truly to push the side ahead with a minute or so remaining.

South Yarra scrambled in the dying seconds, but it was too late as the Falcons roosted it long again where Nathan Crutchley booted the matchsealer to give Endeavour Hills an amazing comefrom-behind 11-point triumph.

“We looked like we could’ve kicked another in the end,” Muscat said. “It was just the belief - we had the breeze and we made some changes in the last five minutes - not saying they worked, but we got over the line so we’ll claim it.”

The coach thought Jake Van Hoesel, Jarryd Burke and Matt Cram stood tall all day as well as the man of the moment Whatman.

Moving up to sixth, Endeavour Hills has a two-week break before its Saturday night showdown with Hallam away on 28 May. In other SFL results, Springvale Districts had a heart-breaking two-point loss to Chelsea Heights.

Trailing at the final break by a point, the Demons couldn’t jag the match winner to just fall short.

Hallam was 80 points ahead when the incident happened and was awarded the win.

Doveton Eagles thrashed Dandenong 17.23 (125) to 3.5 (23). Rounding out SFL results, Lyndale was beaten similarly by Mount Waverley 5.8 (38) to 21.10 (136).

In the VAFA, St John’s skipper Glenn Costas had a field day - racking up 60 touches - as the

JOCS brutalised Richmond Central 26.12 (168) to 5.9 (39).

Starring up forward for the JOCS were Tim Edwards (nine goals) and Aaron Thornton (six goals) while Corey Ely also featured in the best.

On the inverse, Masala was flogged by Eley Park 9.13 (67) to 24.15 (159). Nick Cunningham and Jesse Yarde were best for the Tigers.

Noble Park finished off North Ringwood in the end, taking a 30-point win over the visitors at Moodemere St. Kyle Martin, Ben Giobbi and Musa Amin also featured in the best.

Dandenong Stingrays’ unbeaten TAC Cup run came to an end on the road this week, downed by Murray Bushrangers 9.9 (63) to 9.13 (67). Mitch McCarthy, Mason De Wit and Matt La Fontaine and Sam Fowler (three goals) were the best.

Cougars clutch late BIG V win

By JARROD POTTER BIG V - ROUND 8 TAKING the war to the Warriors after quarter time, Keysborough fought through the front lines to snatch a 70-54 victory on Pakenham’s home court.

The bottom-placed Warriors didn’t let their position dictate their output as they flew out of the blocks.

Keysborough was left in Pakenham’s wake as it could only muster 11 points - on 26 per cent shooting.

In contrast, the flying Warriors nailed 21 in the opening term on the back of four big treys to set the stage early for the hosts.

But from there Keysborough didn’t take the foot off the pedal and fought bravely to make their way back into the BIG V clash.

2016’s new-look Cougars line-up continued to impress as it started to get into gear against Pakenham.

The chase was on as Genevieve Abbott (27 points, 11 rebounds) and Sarah Collins (19 points, 12 rebounds) burdened the workload.

The duo stepped up when the going got its roughest and nailed a pair of strong double-doubles to intimidate the Warriors at either end of the court.

Strongly aided under the ring by forward Lucinda Johnson (six points, seven rebounds) and Jessica Cathcart (two points, seven rebounds), who toiled all night for the visitors - the tables started to turn in Keysborough’s favour.

The trip down the Princes Highway finally seemed worthwhile for the Cougars in the third term, as the visiting BIG V side opened up Pakenham’s defences early.

They slammed the Warriors from every direction in a 26-12 quarter to change the lead, before the visitors sealed the deal in the last to escape with the 16-point victory.

The win pushes Keysborough up to sixth in BIG V Division 2, just outside the finals’ bound top-five. The Cougars men and women face Melbourne University away on Saturday night.

For Keysborough’s women, it’s a chance to jump inside the top five and potentially make its way towards an inaugural finals campaigww After the Journal went to print on Sunday, Keysborough’s men headed up the bush to face Warrnambool while Dandenong clashed against Canberra at home.

Dandy Thunder unbeaten via “Bang Bang” Barnes

By JARROD POTTER NPL VICTORIA 2 EAST - ROUND 12 SIX of the best flew past the Eastern Lions on Saturday night as Dandenong Thunder’s NPL 2 East rampage continued unabated.

After a cagey start, Thunder’s staggering NPL 2 East momentum cranked up once again as Brandon Barnes (12’, 26’, 27’, 80’) stole the show.

There’s no other way to describe his domination of the Eastern defences to snare the double hattrick - from his first touch up forward he scattered the Lions. Barnes slotted his first from a free-kick, after he was taken down carelessly, before ramming home two goals in two minutes to have a hat-trick in his pocket after only 28 minutes.

The Englishman didn’t just terrorise the Lions through the first half though; his rampage paid dividends to everyone around him as his almostassists fed chances to the other strikers in a beguiling performance.

Barnes added his fourth - his 18th of the season so far in only nine games - late in the clash

and the coach couldn’t be happier with the striker’s ability to deliver week-in, week-out.

“It’s fantastic for him as he did come late on in our pre-season - I think now he’s really finding his rhythm,” Thunder coach Huss Skenderovic said.

“We’re giving him really simple tasks and he executes them ... he’s got a combination of strength, speed and he’s got a left foot that’s a Rolls Royce.”

Barnes’ efforts were the icing on the cake from the hard work up the ground as Kristian Sarkies, Nick Modaffari and Daniel Bennett (90’) gave him constant opportunities throughout the night.

Even with the lopsided score line, goalkeeper Fraser Maclaren didn’t have it all his way in the Thunder net and had to scramble to make a couple of big saves early to maintain his clean-sheet.

Faisal Sahkizada was also impressive at central defence alongside Maclaren, holding together the back end as his usual defensive partner, and former Socceroo, Simon Colosimo is currently overseas on business.

While the score-line suggests domination from the first whistle, Skenderovic thought the

match lay in the balance until the Barnes’ bonanza established the buffer.

Thunder has established a five-point buffer on Kingston City, but has to head off for a hard task against in-form Springvale White Eagles in the other Dandy derby.

Everyone was up and about this weekend as Dandenong City and Springvale White Eagles also took huge wins across the NPL round.

Gonzalo Freddi (8’, 18’, 33’) shone early for City as Shaun Filipovic, Ash Cattermole, Jarrod Blackbourn and Dario Matkovic also hit the scoreboard against Nunawading City. The nice boost in goaldifference rockets City up to fourth, trailing Box Hill United ahead of a big clash between the sides on Saturday afternoon.

White Eagles’ trip to Murray was a rampage as John Pykett (12’, 60’) and Damir Stoilovic’s (15’ and 61’) race onto the score-sheet proved more exciting than the actual contest. Isaiah Joseph (37’) booted the other goal for Springvale, who now sit fifth on the ladder.

Steph Cumming not going

Panthers Speak strongly

By JARROD POTTER IT’S one thing to bring them home, but it’s another to keep them there.

Dandenong Rangers have signed on one of their most important WNBL players, as Steph Cumming has decided to stick around Stud Road for the next two WNBL seasons.

Cumming, 25, originally from Endeavour Hills, made her first season back at Dandenong count after two seasons on the championshipwinning Townsville roster.

After a standout return to Dandenong colours - averaging 15.8 points a game and proving the backbone of the side throughout the Rangers horror run with injuries - Cumming was thrilled to stay at the place she’s called home throughout most of her junior and senior basketball career.

Dandenong coach Larissa Anderson said it was crucial to keep the Rangers’ 2015/16 WNBL co-captain around, as she has played a massive part in this up-and-coming side and will only get better from here on.

“It’s a huge key to success trying to keep a quality, core group together - and Steph’s a big part of that core group along with Sara (Blicavs),” Anderson said. “It’s been wonderful to keep Steph signed on for another two years - she had a captaincy role with Aimie last year and I expect that she’ll show even more improvement in that area.

“She leads the way in all facets and I think she’s in career best form - probably her best WNBL season last year - everyone knows her as this fabulous, deadly offensive player, but it was great to see her get defensive player of the year as she’s worked so hard - she was rock solid all season.”

Cumming featured in all 25 Rangers’ WNBL matches last season and her endeavours earned her a top-10 finish in the WNBL MVP voting as well as her place on multiple Australian Opals training squads.

In other WNBL news, Dandenong has lost centre Alex Bunton for the upcoming season as she’s set to play for Dynamo Moscow in Russia.

Darren Pattinson’s Blazin Bomber lights up Sandown

By MICHAEL FLOYD A WEEK after blitzing his rivals in the group 3 Bill Collins Speed Star, Blazin’ Bomber again set Sandown Park alight to set the time standard in the heats of the $145,000 group 1 HarrisonDawson.

Blazin’ Bomber began well from box one and railed hard around the first bend to settle second down the back straight. He then flew by early leader Dyna Irminus to win by an increasing 6¼ lengths from Dalgetty in 29.15.

“It helps when he draws well,” laughed trainer Darren Pattinson following the run.

Good box draw or not, Blazin’ Bomber is in a rare vein of form having now recorded five wins from six starts since returning from injury – all in best of night time. His only loss in that time came in the group 1 Perth Cup in which he jumped from 3, the same box from which he’ll contest next Thursday night’s final.

Soda Man caused the upset of the night when he took out heat 2. Soda Man began well and

Darren Pattinson and Blazin’ Bomber continued their 2016 rampage at Sandown on Thursday night. nudged out the favourite Ultimate Magic to lead heading to the back straight. Tiggerlong Await looked to be the late challenger but was no match for Soda Man who saluted at odds of $21.

Trainer Correy Grenfell and a team of fans were on hand to celebrate the win.

“I took him to Cannington and he struggled,”

Grenfell said.

“Since then I’ve given him three weeks off to freshen him up for this series – he came out great tonight.”

The Jason Thompson trained Invictus Rapid took out the third heat from Warrnambool Classic winner One For Me. A large team of owners were on track to witness the win, none more excited than George Zogoulas.

Dundee Osprey returned to his sparkling best when he took out the final heat at $27.30. Despite the big odds, trainer Geoff Scott-Smith was confident his charge was ready though was aware of the enormity of the task at hand.

The Harrison-Dawson is the second leg of a group 1 double on Thursday 19 May, with the final of the Sapphire Crown for the female greyhounds also to be decided.

Rounding out one of the biggest night of greyhound racing on the calendar, the night will also see the heats of the $250,000 group 1 RSN927 Sandown Cup.

DANDENONG Cricket Club has brought in the big guns for 2016/17.

The Panthers’ search for a replacement for Ross Woodall came to an end this week, as the club announced the appointment of former first class cricketer Nick Speak as its senior coach.

Speak has the runs on the board on and off the park, having played county cricket for both Lancashire and Durham between 1986 and 2001 as well as captaining Durham in 2000.

Speak’s pedigree definitely talks for itself - he featured in 177 first class matches and smashed 9692 runs and 15 centuries in his home country.

Speak immigrated to Australia where in 2008 he was appointed assistant coach/batting coach at Melbourne Cricket Club.

In his six years at the Demons, Speak helped them secure two first XI flags and numerous lower grade premierships and club championships.

But now his attention shifts to Shepley Oval as he hopes to push the Panthers back up the ladder - after finishing 10th this season, just outside finals contention.

On top of his impressive resume, Speak has already appeared at Dandenong, playing two seasons with the club prior to taking permanent residency in Australia.

Speak is keen to take on the challenge of strengthening the Panthers’ first eleven.

His main aim is to ensure the Dandenong Panthers once again become a serious contender in the Victorian Premier Cricket competition, especially making it back to finals and proving successful in the last stage of the season.

As well as high hopes for the first XI, Speak also wants to ensure that the club sticks with player development in all grades - which as always remains a key focus.

“It is exciting to have Nick return to Shepley Oval in a coaching role,” Dandenong president Michael Findlay said.

“To have a cricket person of his calibre take over the good work of Ross Woodall is exactly what we were seeking. We know that Nick will reinvigorate the top two grades and develop the talent so evident through our lower grades.”

Dandenong Cricket Club’s annual general meeting will be held on Wednesday night at Shepley Oval from 7.30pm.

Standout style on the Mercedes A250 got plenty of favourable comments during our week’s road test.

The front seats are correctly shaped to give good support without being overly aggressive.

The rears are on the tight side if the people in the front are tall.

The adaptive suspension system, now fitted to all A-Class models, provides the sort of ride comfort that’s close to its bigger brother the C-Class.

That’s in the Comfort setting, when sharpened up by dialling in Sport it becomes a genuine hothatch to let drivers enjoy a traditional early Sunday morning drive. Some passengers may find it

slightly harsh on rough roads, though.

Handling through the all-wheel-drive 4Matic system is tenacious and easy to control and defies the fact that the A-Class began its life as a frontdrive family hatchback.

Engine performance is excellent and the Mercedes engineers have managed to trim turbo lag to a minimum. Engage the Sport mode and it not only gives more power, but also builds downshift blips into the automatic. Love it!

THE Mercedes-Benz A-Class received a facelift at the start of 2016 and at $53,500 the A 250 Sport provides a solid turn of performance that’s fine for everyday use.

For the 2016 season A-Class gets additional technology, with all versions now having adaptive suspension and satellite navigation.

The Mercedes A 180 has 17-inch wheels, Garmin Map Pilot navigation, blind spot assist, reversing camera, keyless start, Dynamic Select modes and a sporty diamond grille in black as standard.

The A 200 has 18-inch wheels and sports seats with lumber support.

Also in a red hue is the stitching on the dark trim on the seats, door and dashboard that certainly tie in with the Sport badges. Ambient interior lighting can be tailored to suit your needs by providing 12 different colours.

Five different driving modes are offered, everything from Comfort to Race. The latter, naturally, only intended for track use.

The A-Class is the first Mercedes model to be available with smartphone integration for Apple CarPlay and Siri voice control. Mercedes’ latest Comand infotainment system works well and we enjoyed the quality sound system.

The latest Mercedes-Benz A-Class has multiple driving assistance systems, including the drowsiness detection system Attention Assist, Distronic Plus, Collision Prevention Assist Plus and Blind Spot Assist.

There are nine airbags to minimise damage to the occupants should everything still go wrong.

An Active Bonnet setup minimises pedestrian injury in a collision.
