Beating the Year 9 blues YEAR 9 is traditionally a year where students feel most disengaged, unmotivated, and can present a behavioural challenge for teachers.

Most schools now offer an alternative program for Year 9 students, and the Belgrave Heights Christian School model is now in its sixth year.

This year presents an opportunity for fresh and vibrant experiences alongside their vigorous academic workload.

The aim of the program is for the students to develop strong, healthy relationships with their peers and gain greater independence and knowledge of who they are, to face multiple challenges and learn to overcome them, while fostering pride in their accomplishments and growing life skills.

This stands them in good stead to face the challenge of VCE with resilience and good friendships.

Some of the exciting things these students will do this year include sailing, stand-up paddle boarding, the “monster” course, and swimming with sharks and rays.

These activities will help students to build relationships, face their fears and have fun together.

Throughout the year, students complete a unit on community service, personal development and undertake the ‘city experience’, where they visit many Melbourne landmarks over a whole term, navigate public transport and participate in programs engaging with the homeless.

They also go on two action-packed camps - a marine camp and a city camp. It really is a lot of fun!

Yarra Ranges SDS is ‘back on the horse’ YARRA Ranges SDS is taking part in the Riding for The Disabled Association (RDA) horse riding program in Warrandyte again, after a 10-year break.

Students from the middle school are getting the opportunity to partake in the program on Wednesday afternoons.

Merilyn Dixon the teacher in charge is “delighted” with how the students have reacted positively to the challenge and increased their independence and confidence by riding with minimal assistance.

This program is a sample of the number of programs

that Yarra Ranges SDS has introduced to increase student engagement and independence. Students make coffee and snacks for staff from ‘MeCafe’, which is based in the school kitchen, a custom designed, commercial standard kitchen that was installed last year.

The junior students have engaged in a reciprocal play program to enhance their social skills at Mount Evelyn Primary.

As part of the gardening program, in collaboration with the art teacher, students have helped create an indigenous entry garden at the front of the school.

Early in term two, senior students participated in a ‘Leadership Camp’ at Blackwood Outdoor Education Centre to partake in team building activities and set goals for their team in 2016.

Yarra Ranges SDS is continuing to evolve as a school that provides exemplary programs and best practice approaches for young people with a disability.

Small school feel, big opportunities YARRA Hills Secondary College is a multicampus state secondary school serving the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne.

The college has a Year 7 to 10 Mount Evelyn Campus, as well as a Mooroolbark Campus, which houses a Year 7 to 10 ‘junior school’ and a Year 11 and 12 ‘senior school’ on the same site.

Having recently completed a $20 million redevelopment on the Mooroolbark site, with further renovations at the Mt Evelyn Campus, the college has become a preferred destination for many local families.

School with a difference By a parent AS I walk into the kinder room at Little Yarra Steiner School, I am struck by the way in which the children play.

They are so completely absorbed in their game that they don’t even notice as I enter.

The days are getting colder and there is a wood fire burning in the corner.

I can smell the bread rolls the children have helped to make baking in the oven.

All the toys the children use are made out of natural materials - wood, cloth, stone and shells.

A cloth becomes a cape and a child becomes a king.

Another child enters, having sailed across the sea on his boat (wooden blocks stacked up on each side) and wants to enter the king’s castle ... and so the negotiations begin.

Playing is hard work.

As a parent of a young child, I had been searching for a style of education in those younger years, where the nature of the young child was honoured.

A place where he could be a child and experience all the learnings that come from that.

Where playing equals learning - learning to work with and respect other people, experiencing the world of his own imagination (the beginning of creative thought) and where there was a clear structure to his daily routine.

During those younger years, I watched him flourish in this environment, growing as a confident and happy child.

My child has since moved through to the primary school, where he has had the same teacher for the last three years.

This is a relationship based on a respect that goes both ways.

There is continuing growth of understanding of how each child works, who they are and how they can be best supported through the challenges they face, as they arise.

The work that he brings home is rich and varied, and his pride in sharing all that he has learnt is moving.

Who could have thought maths could be so interesting?

It is not only my child who is being educated, but I am also learning more about what goes on in the classroom through each term’s parent teacher meetings.

As different stages emerge for him, some challenging, some wondrous; I find that these are addressed through his daily experience at school.

This is an education that truly meets the needs of children as they grow and develop over time.

Looking towards the high school, I know that the foundation built in these early years will set him in good stead to springboard from into his secondary schooling.

I went to the high school information evening last week, where teachers spoke with such passion for their respective subject areas.

What struck me most was that although they each taught and were very knowledgeable their individual subjects, there was a sense of unity among the staff body; where teachers were all in

The curriculum is integrated across each year level, where teachers often spoke about making classes relevant and engaging.

How does maths live in the world?

Well, it seems that parabolas can be found everywhere! Nothing is left out, while there is clearly a broad academic program, this is well balanced through an extensive camps program, music and the arts.

Children, and indeed, humans are not just a mind, or a body, or our emotions - we are complex beings and it is refreshing to find a style of education that truly meets the needs of a child in all ways.

When schools talk about educating the ‘whole child’, it is clear to see that Little Yarra really lives it.

“I’d always loved children and I’d heard this course at Lakeside provided really good stepping stones to further studies down the track,” she said.

“Everyone is smiling and friendly, it’s really well run and organised. It’s been really easy to build relationships and the teachers offer plenty of help and support. I’m very happy to be at Lakeside.”

Just how much parents matter

By ALLAN SHAW I AM sure that many parents would know from their own intuition or commonsense that they are a very important influence on their children.

What many may not be aware of is that they are also the most important influence on the academic development of their children.

The second most important influence on the academic lives of young people is their teacher, the person in the classroom with them.

The role of parents is most important as a child’s attitude towards learning, towards school and towards some of the pressures that intellectual life can bring are formed around their parents’ expectations, attitudes and support.

Parental expectations that their children will engage with schooling, take a positive approach, and will work hard and do their best sets a strong positive basis for their child to be successful.

Encouraging children to take on new challenges, not to be fearful of failure, and providing support when the occasional failure occurs are all important parental attributes. Good teachers and good schools align their high expectations with those of parents but the research suggests that the major influence comes from the home.

The developmental psychologist

Vygotsky proposed a Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), sometimes described as an attainable challenge.

The lower level of the ZPD is what a child can already do in terms of intellectual work and the upper level is where they could get to with the support and assistance of more capable people. A challenge below the ZPD is boring and no real challenge at all.

A challenge beyond the ZPD is likely to be regarded as too hard and the child not prepared to engage. Within the ZPD is arguably the Goldilocks challenge, not too hard, not too easy.

When such a challenge is attained with the support of the more capable people (often teachers, parents or older siblings), the challenge is reset or a new challenge set with a slightly greater ‘stretch’.

A parent’s expectations for their child should be in this Goldilocks zone and given the developmental stage of most children, the expectations should be described in practical, concrete, measurable ways and the timeframe should be relatively short.

Success should be acknowledged when attained, though the wording should be on the level of engagement, and effort expended.

Setting a sound routine for your child is another practical way to support your child at school and show your expectations. Having a place of study that is not in a bedroom, but in

a quiet but public part of the house allows you to discreetly supervise what is occurring and intervene when required or appropriate.

The time when homework/study is conducted should be regular and a part of a balanced life that includes times for family meals, time with friends and importantly, time for exercise, and as in a previous article of mine, time for good sleep.

Regular exercise has been shown to improve NAPLAN results in primary age students and has also been shown to allow adolescents and adults to operate more effectively in cognitive work.

Regular exercise, sleep and time to relax are all important components of a successful study routine.

While school principals may not be the most influential people in the intellectual life of any one child, they do fill the important role of school community and educational leader, influencing the development of the metaphoric village in which children grow up, linking parents, teachers and students together in common purpose.

Good principals guide the school community, holding it gently accountable for seeing the children grow, learn and develop as we would wish.

They, like parents and good teachers, work with unconditional care for their students.

FUEL-REDUCTION work undertaken by Belgrave South Fire Brigade has been halted as an investigation takes place into alleged environmental damage.

The Port Phillip and Westernport Catchment Management Authority (PPWCMA) has ordered an immediate halt to work on a site near the Belgrave-Hallam Road, while confirming to the ‘Mail’ they are working with “other organisations” on the investigation.

Southern Dandenongs Landcare Group president Darcy Duggan believes the work has “completely wiped out” a population of a highly endangered plant, the White Star Bush.

The species, also known as the Emerald Star Bush, is only found within the Dandenong Ranges and is listed as a threatened plant in Victoria.

The species is mostly located within the Emerald, Belgrave, Belgrave South and Selby areas, with populations also included at Menzies Creek and The Patch.

But with fewer than 40 known sites of the species, Mr Duggan described the situation as potentially an “unmitigated disaster”.

“It’s a very upsetting situation ... this is serious stuff,” he said.

“In relation to reducing fuel loads, we have volunteers out there helping private land-owners and this is how we’re repaid.

“There are plenty of other options out there.”

Mr Duggan said he fielded a phone call from an upset

resident on Friday 29 April, who claimed much of a site near Bellgrave-Hallam Road had been bulldozed.

He checked the site on Monday and said what he saw left him appalled.

The fuel-reduction project is part of the National Landcare Program, a $75,000 federally funded program.

This program has been secured through La Trobe MP Jason Wood and is administered through the PPWCMA. In a written response to the ‘Mail’, a PPWCMA spokesperson confirmed an investigation was taking place.

“The PPWCMA has been made aware of alleged environmental damage on a site associated with a project grant provided by the PPWCMA,” the spokesperson said.

“The PPWCMA has ordered an immediate halt on all work for the project and is working with a number of organisations to investigate the circumstances and the alleged damage.”

The spokesperson said there were high expectations in place.

“The PPWCMA prides itself on delivering high quality outcomes for the environment and places strong conditions on all grants,” the spokesperson said.

“This particular grant had various conditions placed on it with the intention of achieving biodiversity benefits.

“The PPWCMA will be dismayed should it be discovered that these conditions have been breached.

“The investigation is expected to yield further information in the near future.”

Bonded in rail love MOTHER and son Jean and David Clowes were excited to spend their second Mother’s Day together at Puffing Billy on Sunday 8 May, with the railway holding a special place in their hearts.

On Sunday, Jean and David worked together on the footplate of the 11.10am departure from Belgrave to Gembrook.

“As a young boy, Mum used to take me to Lakeside station in Emerald almost every day to watch the trains, and this eventually led to mum becoming a volunteer,” David said.

“I used to go on the engines with her and learn everything I could about how they worked. I became a volunteer myself when I was 13,

eventually becoming a driver the day before Mother’s Day in 2015.

“That was a very special Mother’s Day, and something we both will remember forever,” he said.

Jean, who has been a Puffing Billy volunteer for 27 years and is also the vice-president of the Puffing Billy Preservation Society, said

Car crashes into shop

Briefly Cops downplay pram yarn EMERALD police are assuring people that a viral online story regarding a pram on the side of the Beaconsfield Emerald Road is no great cause for concern.

The story, which has gone viral on Facebook, tells of a woman who pulled over to investigate an abandoned pram before her car was surrounded by three men, and she locked her doors and drove away.

Police at Emerald were immediately dispatched to the area where they conducted a search and confirmed the pram was part of a hard rubbish collection and had been on the side of the road for several days.

Police have canvassed local residents who have not seen anything suspicious, and police have not had any previous incidents like this in any sense.

Search on for stolen ute POLICE are searching for a stolen Ford ute which was used to steal fuel from the Upwey petrol station about 2pm on Sunday 1 May. The blue XR6 ute was reportedly stolen, and the thief has been found, but he has, in turn, sold the ute to another unknown person.

Police are asking anyone who has seen the distinctive blue ute with aluminium tray and registration 1BY 7ZK to call triple-zero.

“He luckily hit the brick pillar on the side of the shop which stopped him from going any further,” she said.

“It could have been so much worse; we were really lucky the pillar saved him and saved the building.”

While Ms Puckey said she felts lucky there wasn’t more damage, she was sympathetic to the driver whose car hit the building.

“The poor guy driving might not be feeling so lucky,” she said.

Ms Puckey was not be able to open her store for trade until building assessors from her insurance company determined the safety of the building.

A CAR smashed into the side of a shop in Wray Crescent in Mount Evelyn early Thursday morning 5 March, causing significant damage.

The CFA were called to the scene shortly after 6am on Thursday where a car had hit the corner of the shop.

Lieutenant Luke Roy of Mount Evelyn CFA said it was a very unfortunate event, but luckily no-one was seriously injured.

“The male driver was taken to hospital for assessment just as a follow up,” he said.

“Both airbags in the car deployed so the impact was quite hard. He

suffered possible minor injuries but was taken to hospital as a precaution.”

The car hit the corner of the building, twisting a brick pillar and resulting in damage to the exterior and interior of the building.

A council building surveyor also attended to assess the structural integrity of the building before having it temporarily made safe until repairs could be undertaken.

The crash is not being treated as suspicious.

Michelle Puckey, who owns Mikki B Fashion and leases the building that was hit by the car, said she was lucky the damage wasn’t worse.

“I’m not in a position to trade until I get an engineer to say it’s OK for me to have people in here,” she said.

“Customer safety is my biggest concern.”

Mikki B Fashion has only been in operation for seven months and Ms Puckey said she was not going to give up on her Mount Evelyn shop.

“I’m here for the long run even though these little setbacks can be disheartening.

“I’m determined to stay in the building but it is too hard to speculate at this stage.

“I’m hoping it gets a thumbs-up and can be fixed soon and I can trade while it’s being done,” she said.

Car hit and run driver sought plate ‘something like’ 1AN GTG. This number plate does not much any records, but may be similar to the actual plates.

The car struck is a 2000 model Toyota Avalon.

Unfortunately, the car had been backed into only recently, with the bumper bar needing to be replaced.

After the most recent incident, there is substantial damage to the boot, as well as a cracked tail light and bumper bar.

Glassing attack witnesses BELGRAVE police are seeking witnesses to a glassing attack that occurred near a venue in Belgrave Main Street early on Saturday morning.

The incident occurred about 12.30am, Saturday 7 May where the male perpetrator hit another male in the face with a beer glass.

The victim was left with a five centimetre gash in his forehead and was taken to hospital.

Police are looking for a Caucasian male with a solid build and short receding brown hair, who was wearing a white or pale blue long sleeve shirt and black trousers at the time of the attack.

Five times legal limit A LILYDALE man had his car impounded for a month over the weekend, after being caught by police driving nearly five times over the limit.

Yarra Ranges police posted on the Yarra Ranges Eyewatch Facebook page, saying the man was seen by police driving on the footpath shortly after midnight on Sunday, after leaving a take-away restaurant in Lilydale.

He then underwent a breath test, and was found to have an alleged blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.242 - nearly five times the 0.05 limit.

A YARRA Ranges resident is seeking information about a hit-and-run incident which occurred in the car park outside SUPA IGA in Mount Evelyn.

Gardeners working in the area were able to provide some details to the victim.

They said about 11am on Wednesday 4 May, a black, latemodel SUV struck the car before leaving the scene.

POLICE are reminding people to obey speed limits after many drivers were caught speeding in the Hills.

A 29-year-old male from Ferntree Gully will be charged with careless driving when he lost control of his vehicle and drove down an embankment on the corner of Mount Dandenong Tourist Road and Inverness Road.

The crash occurred about 10.30pm on Friday 6 May, and both driver and passenger were uninjured.

Another male driver was caught driving almost double the speed limit at 11.30pm the same night through Sassafras village.

The 20-year-old from Lakes Entrance was caught travelling 92 km/h in a 50km/h zone, and will have his licence suspended as well as have a substantial fine slapped.

IN tireless stalwart Brian Hannan, this year’s Emerald Citizen of the Year award recognises one of the hills’ ultimate team players.

Presented by the Emerald Village Committee during the recent PAVE Festival, the award celebrates Mr Hannan’s 45 years in the community since moving to the town in 1971.

Since that time he has been involved in practically all facets of the community, holding a range of volunteer positions in local clubs and organisations.

He’s served as secretary for both the Emerald and Cockatoo RSLs, was a forward disaster coordinator during the Ash Wednesday bushfires, was the treasurer on the inaugural S86 Emerald Village Committee, a treasurer for the PAVE Festival, a member of the Emerald Lake Park advisory committee and Emerald CFA, the secretary of the Emerald Lakers Basketball Club, and even a representative and negotiator for the Buddhist Temple in Emerald - among a whole host of other roles.

But it’s a strong involvement with the fight to keep Gemco out of the hands of an earlier council that carries a little added significance for Mr Hannan.

“This award is pretty special to me,” he said.

“It recognises 45 years of teams. It’s not me on the white horse charging in - it’s a case of so many of those teams having good people and just needing to be worked with.

“It’s the recognition of a whole lot of teams that have been successful.”

And he wanted to thank one other team member, in particular.

“I want to make special mention of one team member - someone whose empathetic nature balances my ‘fix bayonets and charge’ style, someone who has coped with so many phone calls, drop ins, meetings, late meals and deadlines for the past 45 years,” he said.

“Of course, it’s my soulmate Jen. So, for me, this award is really ‘Brian and Jenny Hannan Citizens of the Year’.

Letters Saving the hub I HAVE followed the planning developments relating to the Hills Hub for over a year and I am becoming increasingly concerned this terrific project will be lost to the Hills because of differences of opinion relating to the chosen site.

I suggest consideration be given to the Alma Treloar Reserve in Cockatoo.

The site in Emerald has multiple ownership/governance, traffic and parking difficulties and attractive trees which may be under threat.

It also has the substantial problems of divergent views from key stakeholders reported in recent weeks. The site in Cockatoo does not have any of these problems and offers additional benefits.

It is central in the Hills area, better located for the people of Cockatoo and Gembrook.

It would be a wonderful accompaniment to the recently completed Ash Wednesday Bushfire Education Centre and a major economic stimulus to Cockatoo.

The project could be planned with confidence and the risk of losing the federal funding eliminated.

I expect council is already considering alternative sites.

I suggest a deadline be set for resolving the issues at the Emerald site - say 30 June, after which that option is considered closed.

I know that whatever the outcome there will be winners and losers.

It would be unfortunate if the

Emerald Hall is not made to comply with today’s standards, but the hall committee has its destiny in its own hands.

It will be much worse if the project is lost in its entirety.

In that case, the entire Hills community will be the losers.

Drive is a real test

By JESSE GRAHAM YOUNG drivers will have to travel into Mooroolbark for their licence testing from the end of June, after VicRoads announced it was pulling out of Yarra Ranges Council community links.

On Wednesday 4 May, VicRoads and the council announced that community links in Healesville, Yarra Junction and Monbulk would not provide VicRoads services after 30 June.

VicRoads acting director of registration and licensing services Serge Zandegu said that more places had been added to their Licence Testing Centre in Mooroolbark - roughly half an hour’s drive from Healesville - to accommodate drivers from the valley and hills.

Getting to the testing centre will require people without a licence to catch a bus up the Warburton or Maroondah Highway, catch a city-bound train to Mooroolbark, then walk to the centre - or hitch a ride with someone who can drive.

Those who need to use other services of VicRoads will have to travel to Burwood East, Dandenong or Heatherton - with a minimum travel time of 53 minutes each way from Healesville - or do so online.

Yarra Ranges councillor Fiona McAllister said that the presence of VicRoads in the council’s link buildings left council out of pocket - but that cutting the services “wasn’t an easy decision to make”.

“Ultimately, it’s a VicRoads service, so it puts us in a difficult situation - we don’t want to create a situation where people have to travel further, or there are costs or inconvenience, but, by the same token, it’s a VicRoads service, not a council service,” she said.

“When the service review came up, and we realised the financial situation it was going to create, the decision was made.

“It’s not ideal at all - I would have hoped there would have been a way that they could continue their service.”

Council director of corporate services Troy Edwards said that it was “no longer financially viable” for council to provide services on behalf of VicRoads.

Healesville Driving School’s Lisa Barber and Graham Bolton said the change would cost young drivers and their families in the Yarra Ranges and Murrindindi council areas more time and money.

“I have quite a few (students) coming from as far away as Alexandra, Buxton, Narbethong and Marysville - it will affect them as well, because we are their closest office,” Ms Barber said.

She said the drive test would also be more difficult for young drivers than in the valley, with the Mooroolbark test taking in the Five Ways roundabouts, as well as lane changes and merging.

“For me to bring up somebody for the testrelated criteria that is specific for Mooroolbark, we have to drive there - so it’s going to take more lessons and longer drives,” she said.

“Those that are living in the Yarra Ranges are disadvantaged by having to move to Mooroolbark.”

Mr Zandegu said VicRoads would “continue to work with the affected communities to ensure they have access to key services, including online, by person and in person at alternative customer service centres”.

“VicRoads has been working closely with Yarra Ranges Shire to minimise impacts to the community as a result of the closure,” he said.

Despite temporarily suspending licence testing in Healesville in April, Mr Zandegu said drive test appointments would be available in all three community links until 30 June.

The Mail contacted Yarra Ranges Council to ask how much hosting VicRoads in its community link buildings cost the organisation annually, but did not receive a response before deadline.

Using locally sourced, fresh, human-grade ingredients business owners Shiona and Steve are passionate about creating delicious and healthy snacks for all fur-babies.

All pet food produced by Dog Gone Healthy and Kool for Cats is free from known pet allergens such as: gluten, wheat, artificial colours or flavours, preservatives or fillers, and added sugars or salts.

The business was born out of the love and dedication Shiona and Steve have to their own pooches, a Chocolate Spoodle named Cadbury and Hendrix, a Bichon Frise cross poodle.

Devoted to their pets’ wellbeing, Shiona and Steve undertook extensive research to help their dogs’ sensitive stomachs.

What they found was the majority of commercially produced dog food and treats only exasperated their dogs’ conditions as many are highly processed and contain high levels of chemical preservatives, salts and common allergens such as wheat, corn and soy.

It was though this research Shiona and Steve decided to make their own treats that were much gentler on Cadbury’s and Hendrix’s little tummies.

EASTERN Health is saying thanks to its 900-strong team of volunteers, who make invaluable contributions each and every day.

As part of National Volunteer Week, from 9 to 15 May, Eastern Health will pay tribute to volunteers such as Jill Blackwood (pictured), who has been a volunteer at Angliss Hospital’s emergency department for more than five years.

Ms Blackwood’s role includes providing comfort to patients and families in the emergency department.

“I’ve been a volunteer at Angliss Hospital’s emergency department for five and a half years,” she said.

“My role includes providing comfort to families in the emergency department.

“This can involve making them cups of tea and coffee, or giving children colouring books and pencils.

“It can also be as simple as talking to them.”

Ms Blackwood said the most rewarding aspect of volunteering was being able to help people.

“A hospital emergency de-

partment can be pretty stressful, so it’s good when I can make patients and families feel a bit more comfortable and a little more at ease,” she said.

“I would definitely recommend volunteering to others; it is very much appreciated by the nurses.”

From working in the kiosk, to providing support in hospital emergency departments, Eastern Health offers a wide range of volunteering opportunities throughout Melboune’s east and outer east.

AUSTRALIAN GovernorGeneral Sir Peter Cosgrove will headline a star-studded list of dignitaries who will help Eastern Health’s major fund-raising campaign for the year.

Eastern Health will shine the spotlight on its researchers and their endeavours with the inaugural Searchlight Dinner at the Plaza Ballroom in Collins Street, Melbourne, on Tuesday 24 May. Special guests will also include family doctor and media presenter, Dr Sally Cockburn (aka Dr Feelgood), as well as

Eastern Health Foundation patron and Channel Nine newsreader Peter Hitchener.

This year’s theme is ‘celebrating life and all its colours’ and will raise funds for the Vivian Bullwinkel Chair in Palliative Care Nursing, based at Eastern Health.

Eastern Health Director of Palliative Care, Dr Margaret Bird, said the research and education program would address the need to provide optimum palliative care services to patients, their loved ones and the broader community.

“It will explore ways the health profession can better work with families and carers to determine what is important for the patient and appropriate treatment options when living with life-limiting illnesses,” she said.

Eastern Health Foundation director Anne Gribbin encouraged the community to get behind the event.

Wines flow at grand opening KALLISTA General Store was filled with not only good stock, but plenty of fanfare as the new owners held their grand opening recently. On offer for the more than 200 guests were plenty of local and international wines, with representatives present from Hargreaves Hill Brewery and Angry Cock Cider. There was also cheese from the Spring Street Grocer. Business partners Josephine Horn and Elizabeth Hourigan said they had introduced plenty of new items, such as a coffee machine, a new deli range and daily fresh bread. The Under 9A side have experienced three weeks, three different types of weather, but the kids loved it. No scoring, but heaps of effort.

Under 9Bs had a tight arm wrestle with a strong Wesburn side. The players were asked to talk more and run to create space, which they did well and improved from last week. They tackled well and competed around each contest. A great effort. No result record.

Aitken the ace

By DENNIS FULLER THE May monthly meal was there for the taking last Saturday at Emerald Golf Club with the sun shining, the birds singing and, and for some, the ducks all over the place.

Players straggled in displaying various states of disrepair, except for David Aitken (25) and Peter Clowes (16) who both carded a nett score of 68.

Various methods of separating the two were suggested by the great disgruntled but, after due consideration, the committee decision was for the traditional countback.

The handicap pennant team oozed down to Royal Park Golf club and came away with a 5 to 3 loss, which sits well with their other results and stands them in good stead to hit the ground running in the final.

Wednesday’s Opulently Flashy Gold (OFG) was a round of stableford with Peter Jones giving those assembled a right good kicking when he stormed home with 42 points to just head off Bobby Kennedy on 41.

Tough testing course at Wandin Park

By JAMIE STRUDLEY ATHLETICS Victoria brought Round 2 of its Cross Country and Road (XCR) series to Wandin Park last Saturday.

Over 1000 athletes from throughout Victoria enjoyed the picturesque venue and views; but possibly not the tough, testing course.

Various distances of 2km, 3km, 4km, 6km and 8km, depending on age group, proved very tough with many athletes reduced to a walk or rest.

Highlights of the day were the runaway win by new member Sam Norton in the Under 14 Boys 2km, the likely team wins for our Under 14 Boys and Under 16 Girls and the welcoming of so many new athletes including Sam Norton, Taj Linde, Zac Clarke, James Love, Mitch Mullens, Luke Jackson, Dean Jackson, Stephen Blair, Mia Strudley, Sarah Llyod, Claire Knell, Sarah Love, Laura DiGregorio and Corrie Van Raaphorst.

A big thank you goes to the club members who worked on the canteen and barbecue on a warm day.

Phil Brock is tutoring would-be rally drivers in the skills of the sport. 153735

Sharpening up rally skills WOULD-BE competitors keen to test their skills at tarmac rallying can sign up for a new program being run by a man called Brock.

Phil ‘Split Pin’ Brock, youngest brother of the late touring car legend, Peter, has joined forces with Mountain Motorsports, organisers of the Australian Tarmac Rally Championship, to train would-be rally drivers in the skills of the sport.

Brock and business partner Steve Whyte will be ‘on duty’ at the next round of the series, the Lake Mountain Sprint at Marysville/Lake Mountain (28-29 May), with their team of driving instructors to work one-on-one with drivers entering the touring category of the rally.

Event director Peter Washington hopes the program will bring more people into the sport and introduce them to the possibility of competing at a higher level.

“Entrants who sign up for the touring category not only get a chance to enjoy their cars in a safe controlled environment, but they also get to improve their skills with tuition from some of the best in the business,” he said.

“All of us hope this program will be a training ground for future competitors, a low-cost entry into the sport and hopefully a pathway to bigger and better things.

“Many of our touring category entrants have come along initially to just put a toe in the water, and then decide

they will commit to going further, gaining their competition licence and buying a rally car.

“With Phil and Steve’s program, they can now get proper one-on-one tuition as they take part in our events, with instruction for drivers and codrivers.

“We hope the experience will be so enjoyable that they will decide to become regular competitors in the sport, whether that be in our tarmac rallies, or in other events.”

At the Lake Mountain Sprint, which is based at Marysville, Phil Brock’s role will be as host and tour leader to the touring category entrants.

He will lead the entrants through each stage, teaching them the correct

lines through the event route.

Phil and Steve and their team will take time with each individual driver, analysing their abilities and working with them to increase and enhance their skills in tarmac rallying and what it involves.

Touring competitors must be clothed in non-flammable clothing from neck to wrist and ankle but not necessarily a race-suit.

Driver and co-driver must wear helmets.

They can run a standard road-registered vehicle without a roll cage.

Limited entries are still available for the touring category in the Lake Mountain Sprint.

Entries are also available for the final two rounds of the 2016 series, the Snowy River Sprint (Lakes Entrance, 24-25 September) and the Great Tarmac Rally (Marysville, 10-11 December).

All ATRC events are also open to full tarmac-spec competition vehicles to contest the modern (modified), classic (pre-1982) and showroom classes.

Crews must wear full race-suits and helmets and be licensed by Australian Auto Sport Alliance (AASA).
