Birds drop F-bomb By GEORGIA WESTGARTH A STICKER book aimed at children and sold in the kids section at a Hampton Park variety store has the F-word on every page. The ‘Angry Birds’ themed six-page book features the well-known red bird, ‘Terence’, smoking and wearing a snap back and bandana, with a speech bubble which reads, “Mather f*****”. A rebellious Terence appears in this state on each page among other Angry Birds characters. Pakenham mother of six, Tammy Wells, bought the offending sticker book on Friday 29 April unaware of what lay inside. “I purchased two sticker books from the variety shop for my three-year-old daughter,” Ms Wells said. “They only cost about $2 each, and the female sales assistant never said anything to me. “One turned out to be completely fine, but I couldn’t believe what I was seeing when my eight-year-old son pointed it out to me.” Ms Wells said the front cover was quite misleading and took to social media to warn others. “I’ve bought Angry Birds merchandise before and never had an issue, it’s a children’s cartoon and normally I wouldn’t think twice to buy something of that nature,” Ms Wells said. “The front cover looked harmless.” Ms Wells has confiscated the book from her daughter Sophie, but said she was “really disgusted”. “I’m lucky my son was playing with Sophie at the time and spelt it out to me because he knows he’s not allowed to swear, but he knew it wasn’t right, he asked me what it means,” she said. “I can’t believe that it is being sold as a kid’s book and there were others for sale - they have to be taken off the shelf.” A Pakenham resident of 10 years, Ms Wells said she rarely went to Hampton Park and wouldn’t be shopping there again. “You expect a shop to check their deliveries before misleading customers,” she said. The made in China sticker book was sold at a discount store in Hampton Park Shopping Centre on Hallam Road. Star News has made contact with the Hampton Park Shopping Centre and is awaiting a response.

Youth voice heard By ANEEKA SIMONIS YOUNG people must be brought into the conversation when discussing long-term strategies to end gendered violence in the community, said a Cardinia Shire anti-violence campaigner. Fiona Cost, leading the community’s biggest ever offensive against family violence in the Together We Can movement, said we had no hope in tackling the scourge if today’s youth weren't involved in the fight. “If we want to make a long-term change, we have to think about who are going to be the parents of the future. They are the young people of today. We need to hear their voices,” she said. Last week, Cardinia Shire Council launched its ‘Year of Action’ following extensive consultation with community members and experts all on board to end the disturbing trend of violence in Cardinia Shire homes. The major violence overhaul intends to break the vicious cycle of abuse plaguing the town, starting with a 100-day rollout of initiatives setting the tone for a long-term plan of attack. It will harness victims with the information, support and strength needed to leave a violent relationship as well as bolster prevention, early intervention and reformation services for perpetrators. Initiatives flagged for completion within the next 100-days include ... Some of the initiatives include ... Council-enforced ‘terms of use’ at shire sporting and recreational facilities requiring users to adhere to a code of conduct highlighting respectful relationship; Early education campaigns in schools; Youth forums identifying leaders, mentors and ambassadors; Family violence awareness training (ie, programs highlighting positive and negative styles of fathering, identifying child trauma) and Visual campaigns throughout shire, including 1800 RESPECT line for people who think they are a victim or perpetrator of family violence. It is hoped the short-term plan will set the foundations for a long-term cultural shift support-

The two-day campaign began with a business breakfast with local businesses each encouraged to promote gender equality as a core value at their workplace. It was followed by a community-led awareness walk around Lakeside lake and harrowing tales of abuse experienced by notable members of the community including Cardinia Shire Mayor Jodie Owen.

Community experts then gathered together to discuss the strategies that will be implemented to fight violence. The Together We Can campaign will roll out localised initiatives over the next three years. Despite being one of the fastest growing growth corridors in Australia, the budget has “failed to build vital new schools in this region“, Shadow Education Minister Nick Wakeling said. “Daniel Andrews’ budget shows that he doesn’t care about education in Victoria’s growth areas,“ he said. “The only new school funded in the growth corridor is Gum Scrub Creek Primary School. There has been no land purchased for new schools in Cardinia Shire. “Casey-Cardinia residents would be bitterly disappointed with Daniel An-

wick across the Casey area. “The previous Coalition government failed to invest in new schools in their term of government, that is why no new government schools opened in Victoria this year, let alone in Casey and Cardinia,“ Mr Merlino said. “Labor is delivering for Casey and Cardinia schools in spades in the 2016/17 Budget, including buying land for a new primary school at Casey Fields, and building a new primary school at Gum Scrub Creek.“ He said the State Budget would also allocate $10 million in infrastructure grants to build kindergartens and children’s centres in growth areas and $50 million of the Shared Facilities Fund to build community-use facilities on school sites across the state, including Casey and Cardinia.

By ANEEKA SIMONIS POLICE nabbed an alleged drug trafficker in Pakenham in possession of a large amount of cash thought to have been earned through crime. The 21-year-old Pakenham man fronted the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court charged with a number of drug and weapon charges less than 24 hours after he was identified by police. Pakenham uniform members executed a warrant at a Chestnut Chase home late in the afternoon on Friday 29 April. Investigators allegedly uncovered half a kilogram of cannabis and a large amount of cash during their swoop on the Pakenham man. Police also uncovered a number of weapons believed to be knives. The man was charged with possession and trafficking a drug of dependence, possession of a controlled weapon and possession of proceeds of crime. He was remanded overnight for a Saturday 30 April appearance at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court.

NEW Protective Services Officers were deployed to Officer train station this week, bringing their patrol to a total of 203 stations across Melbourne. Acting Transit Safety Division Superintendent Campbell Mill said Officer would have at least two PSOs patrolling the train platform, car parks and surrounding areas from 6pm until the last train each night. “PSOs make a significant contribution to Victoria Police and to the Victorian community,” Mr Mill said. “They work hard to ensure we have a public transport system that commuters can feel safe using." Since their introduction in February 2012, PSOs have reduced serious crime on the railway network, including assaults, and have detected more property damage and graffiti offences, he said. “They (PSOs) have contributed to a reduction in robberies, and identified and arrested hundreds of offenders that are of interest to police.” Since their introduction, PSOs have issued more than 57,000 infringement notices for a range of offences including possessing an open container of alcohol, drunk in a public place and anti-social behaviour. This includes more than 3000 notices for alcohol-related offences and 40,000 transport offences such as conduct affecting safety.

Four chords for Cranbourne By GEORGIA WESTGARTH IT WAS a song about Cranbourne that had the Horsham Country Music Festival crowd craving more from local singer-songwriter Sharon Start. The 56-year-old ukulele music teacher from Cranbourne West wrote the suburban song five years ago to commemorate a special milestone. Ms Start had notched up 25 years living in the same house, in the same suburb, and named the song Once Was a Country Town as she delved into her memories of the area to write the lyrics. “I had lived a quarter of a century in Cranbourne and raised my three sons, I wanted to do something special to celebrate,” Ms Start said. After the words came so effortlessly, Ms Start, who was perplexed on a tune and melody to go with the song, left the project unfinished - until she heard of the busking competition at the Horsham Country Music Festival. “I decided to put comedy rock band The Axis of Awesome theory to the test about how all songs can be played using just four chords,” she said. Ms Start, an active folk musician, had never performed country music but packed her banjolele for the weekend away. Unable to score a place in the competition, she was delighted after fate stepped in. “It was so bizarre, the organiser had told me there were no places left, he said unless someone dies you won’t get to perform ... I was so disappointed,” she said. But with her instruments tuned and a spot to be filled at the last minute, Ms Start was the only performer ready to sing. “I was an unknown singer, in front of unknown audience, singing an original song, to a tune of just four chords,” she said laughing. “But I got to perform, I achieved my goal and sang the Cranbourne song but all of a sudden the audience started cheering for more.” Set on singing just one song, Ms Start left the festival having sung three and winning the most popular busker award out of the 23 performers. Aware of the novelty of it all, a thrilled Ms Start said: “I mean, no one writes a song about Cranbourne!”

NO-ONE in Australia has achieved what Joshua Thomas has. No-one in the country has lived to 19 years of age with the progressive brain condition Joshua has. And no-one can say they’ve got a photograph slam dunking a basketball with their canine friend, 10ft off the ground. But Joshua can. The Cranbourne teenager had his dream of being an NBA star materialised, with a little heart, and a little magic photography from awardwinning local artist Karen Alsop. A super dream, a super labrador and a goodwill project aiming to brighten up the lives of youth living with a disability or illness through clever photography, has provided some much-needed light for the Thomas family. The eldest of three children, Joshua was born with Vein of Galen malformation, which means blood doesn’t disperse around the brain properly. Joshua’s condition is now considered progressive, and he began deteriorating in 2012. The uncommon condition means Joshua suffers from dementia, strokes, seizures, left weakness, epilepsy and intellectual disabilities. But it hasn’t stopped him from enjoying the sport he loves, basketball. “Josh has always wanted to play NBA and plays in his school team at Nepean School,” Mum, Mette said. But it wasn’t until Mette heard about Guys Hill photographer Karen Alsop’s quest for models for ‘The heART Project’ that Joshua’s dream was truly realised. “I contacted Karen, and it’s all

I WOULD like to respond to the letter Rate Voices Rise (Berwick and Cranbourne News, 28 April 2016). It is important, when talking about council’s necessary application to the Essential Services Commission for a variation to the State Government imposed rate cap, that we present accurate facts. Council’s decision to apply for a 0.97 per cent variation was made after undertaking extensive research, community consultation and budgetary forecasting. Two community consultation forums were held in October and December 2015 to seek community input. Residents told us they were not willing to compromise on their expectations regarding community facilities and services. A rejection of council’s application for a variation will only disappoint the author further as it will be his children and their friends who will miss out on opportunities when facilities cannot be completed. While council agrees that the education of Casey’s children is vital to our community future, school education is not the domain of local government. The author should pursue this campaign with the State and Federal Governments. In addition, council does not financially invest in shopping complexes rather we are active in ensuring that proposed retail applications meet planning requirements for the area which take into account social, economic and geographic factors. Council does, however, offer support to local businesses to provide employment opportunities for our residents. Council aims to ensure we maintain the lifestyle residents want and deserve. IN RESPONSE to Mr Flannery’s letter Writing On The Walls (Berwick and Cranbourne News, 28 April 2106), council is pleased to share that it’s Clean Up Your Act campaign has quite literally paid off, in the form of $300,000! The funding was announced to remove unsightly graffiti which lines the Monash Freeway in the Victorian Government’s 2016/17 budget, shortly after the Star News would have gone to print last week. Council shares Mr Flannery’s concerns about the lack of response by VicRoads to this endemic problem and the cost to Council to actively campaign for action. This is a huge victory and we are glad to be able to put plans for billboards, encouraging residents to support the campaign on hold, saving ratepayers’ money. GUE CATALO DESPITE a $154 million windfall in the state budget, more than $260 million is still needed to transform Thompsons Road into a major east-west throughfare, according to Casey mayor Sam Aziz. Cr Aziz, who is the Victorian Spokesperson for the National Growth Areas Alliance Fund Our Future Campaign, welcomed the State Govement contribution but said much more was needed to finish the project. “It’s encouraging that the State Government is listening. While this is step in the right direction, the funding does not fully address a solution to the transport bottleneck at the intersection of Westernport Highway and Thompsons Road and does not complete the needed connection of Thompsons Road from Clyde Road through to Cardinia,” Cr Aziz said. “The Thompsons Road extension is urgently required to facilitate development of employment land in Casey and Cardinia and the provision of local job opportunities for these communities. A funding commitment of $190 million is still required from the Federal

FEDERAL ALP politicians and candidates have lashed out at a planned cut in Headspace Narre Warren’s services for acutely mentally ill young people. After a briefing with Headspace staff, the Labor delegation including Holt MP Anthony Byrne said the progressive funding cuts to the centre’s Youth Early Psychosis Program (YEPP) was “beyond comprehension”. By June this year, it’s expected the program in southern Melbourne would have treated more than 600 clients. In 2016-17 the Federal Government plans to cut the program’s funding by 20 per cent and extend the cuts to 70 per cent the following financial year. Those funds will be redirect-

ed to the local primary health care network. Despite its “enormous benefit” for Casey’s youth, the facility was not being guaranteed, Mr Byrne said. “Reduction in the size of Headspace YEPP or its closure will result in the disruption of current clinical care arrangements and impact young people and families adversely. “It is vital we guarantee the future viability of Headspace Narre Warren for the long term.” Mr Byrne, who said he was part of a lobby that fought for the centre, said Labor pledged a co-ordinated service with YEPP and the local primary health care network. La Trobe ALP candidate Simon Curtis said the Government was not able to “see the human story behind these heartless cuts.

La Trobe MP Jason Wood, who also lobbied for the Headspace centre, said he was “very committed” to the centre’s long-term future. Mental health was one of his “major concerns” for the electorate, he said. Mr Wood said current clients would continue getting “safe and effective” care as funding for the YEPP was redirected to primary health networks from July. The change would broaden the entrance criteria for the program and potentially widen the geographical reach, he said. “I understand the concern with the winding back of (YEPP) model of care, however it is important that we provide early intervention for a broader group of young people experiencing early symptoms of severe mental illness.”

Thanks for intervention By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A MAN smiled and uttered, “Thank God, yes” as a court slapped him with a five-year intervention order to protect his ex-partner and her two children. Bashkim Gashi, 33, was accused of twice choking the expartner in her home in defiance of an earlier full intervention order. At the time, he was serving a community corrections order for pulling an imitation shotgun and threatening to kill a mechanic who he believed was having an affair with his ex-partner. The strangulation incidents dramatically increased the risk of a future homicide or further serious harm, magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted at the 2 May hearing as the ex-partner looked on from the gallery. Mr Vandersteen noted Gashi had been little deterred by his jail stint or community corrections order for family violencerelated offences. In a sentence indication, the magistrate offered Gashi an 18-month jail term - with a six-month non-parole period if the accused pleaded guilty to all charges. The offences included disqualified driving, assault, intentionally causing injury, as well as criminal damage for allegedly shattering a glass cake holder

at a Narre Warren kebab outlet. Gashi had pushed the holder on the floor after complaining that the food he’d consumed was frozen and demanding free chips. During a police interview over the incident, he showed no remorse and made jokes, the court was told. He refused to answer questions properly, reverting to the retort: “My name is Jeff.” Gashi was accused of six breaches of an intervention order since October by attending the ex-partner’s Noble Park house. On one occasion, Gashi allegedly threw a glass against a wall, headbutted the victim’s face and nose and pushed her backwards causing her head to hit the wall, police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Kerryn Steyn told the court. The victim believed her nose was broken and she’d been in pain for two months following the incident. In April, Gashi allegedly pushed the ex-partner into a glass sliding door, grabbed her by the neck and tightened until she couldn’t breathe, the court was told. She was lifted off the ground and her nose was bitten progressively harder by the accused. When she saw her bloodied face in the mirror, she at first believed part of her punctured

nose had been bitten off, the court heard. On 24 April, the ex-partner was washing her hands in a bathroom when she saw Gashi standing behind her in a mirror. He covered her mouth with his hands, demanding the return of his mobile phone. He allegedly dragged her out of the toilet backwards, grabbing her by the throat and put a hand over her mouth to prevent her screaming. Gashi had been subject to an intervention order since entering the mechanic’s workplace and threatening him with an imitation firearm last year. He was jailed for 140 days and put on a 12-month community corrections order. Gashi had married his expartner in an Islamic ceremony not recognised under Australian law. It was his first significant relationship, his lawyer said. The court heard the accused used significant amounts of alcohol and cannabis during the relationship. Gashi’s lawyer said the accused pleaded guilty to the driving and criminal damage charges but contested the recent family violence-related offences. Gashi rejected the sentence indication and elected to contest the charges at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 31 May.

The former Ramsay Street teenager was booked to sing and sign copies of her new single, Dear Life, at 5.30pm on Thursday 28 April. But some eager fans couldn’t wait that long, arriving at the centre 10 hours before the show. “I got here at 9am, but some people had been here since 7.30am,” Alisha Austin said. “I’ve been here all day but it was worth it.” The 22-year-old Cranbourne Li-

On average, one woman is killed every week at the hands of a current or former partner. We raise girls to expect ridicule from boys when we tell them “He’s only doing it because he likes you”. When we do confront unacceptable behaviour, we play it down by saying “Don’t worry, it wasn’t that bad”.

Anne’s up for the challenge By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS ANNE Atkin still keeps on forging new ground. Ten years after pioneering a Painting with Parkinson’s class in Berwick and writing several books, Ms Atkin, 65, is poised for radical brain surgery to allay her illness’s paralysing effects. Her books on the illness match her philosophy - that you have to have a life. “You never, never know if you don’t have a go,” she says. In June, Ms Atkin will take another giant step - being surgically wired with a neurotransmitter connected from her collarbone to the centre of her brain. She describes it as like a heart pacemaker. Its pulses of electricity will help correct Ms Atkin’s muddied neural signals. It’s a treatment not a long-awaited cure, she stresses. It possibly means five years of less medication, less fatigue and freer movement. It may be a temporary allayment of her regular frustration. “Some days it’s like walking through deep mud. That’s what the air feels like,” she says. “Your feet just stick to the floor.” The accomplished artist jokes that she’s had to explore more abstract painting. Her painting-hand’s shakes don’t matter so much then, she says. She speaks passionately of teaching up to 20 class members the basics of creating art - colour, tone and composition. But it’s all light-hearted on the ground. “A lot of people say they can’t believe it’s a support group - it looks like a party. “It’s nice to talk with someone who knows exactly how you feel.”

seven groups across Victoria. With funding, she could extend the group to include Alzheimer’s patients who also benefit from art classes. Ms Atkin points out medical research into Parkinson’s is small com-

pared to other neural disease. “We still don’t know what causes it. There’s three groups of people where it’s most common - farmers, teachers and medical staff. “It’s getting more common and people are getting younger (when diagnosed). “Imagine someone in their late 40s with a mortgage, teenage children, no longer being able to work. At 50, Ms Atkin slowly developed a hunch and lost movement in one arm. It was at that point an aunt advised she could have Parkinson’s - an affliction that Ms Atkin had never heard about. She tried to carry on teaching for several months but was needing to sleep at lunchtime to take afternoon classes. People’s symptoms include 33 nonmotor ones, such as breathing difficulties, fatigue, excessive sweating, digestive problems and mental loss, and any of four motor symptoms - tremor, rigidity, core balance and slowness of movement. The only motor symptom Ms Atkin doesn’t have is a tremor - which made it difficult to diagnose at first. Some doors of her life have closed, but others have opened - such as founding Painting with Parkinson’s, writing books on the illness and having morning tea with a Governor-General. “I love the group and I love doing what I do.” Ms Atkin has a solo art exhibition booked for July. She will be then just putting the finishing touches on a book about her brain surgery. Her next focus is to be granted one of City of Casey’s gallery spaces to display her group’s works. “It’s a confident group. These people are really good at what they’re doing.”

Animal activist takes aim By GEORGIA WESTGARTH THE founder of Oscar’s Law - who planted hidden cameras in a Blind Bight farm - now plans to use the “torturous” footage to push for the chaining of dogs to be made illegal. Debra Tranter said what she witnessed at the Wild Duck Way acreage farm was “absolutely barbaric”. “The dogs are chained to poles and some trees all day, on short leads of around two metres,” the animal activist said. “I am going to write to Minister for Agriculture, Jaala Pulford and use this case to highlight that we need to change the legislation around chaining dogs.” A detailed report with photos and video of the 20 plus chained and flea ridden American bulldogs, pitbulls and Staffordshire bull terriers was sent by Oscar’s Law to the RSPCA on Thursday 14 April.

Police, RSPCA and a Casey Council by-laws officer searched the family farm the following day, slapping a compliance notice on the male owner to rectify the welfare concerns. The RSPCA did not seize any of the dogs on the day but will continue to monitor the case. Ms Tranter and her team of two scanned the animals and found that majority of the hidden dogs were “not microchipped and therefore not registered”. “We are urging the Casey Council to lay charges for unregistered dogs and the number of dogs on the property,” she said. Under Section 11 of the City of Casey Community Local Law, it states a person who owns or occupies land of 4000 square metres or more must not, except with a permit, keep more than four dogs or cats. However two weeks after the raid the Casey Council has not charged the man with holding

Ms Tranter said the secluded spot would take the owner 15 minutes to walk to from the farm house. 153460 Picture: Animal activists “They are very friendly, there are no signs of wounds or scars from fighting but the dogs are in bad condition,” she said. “One has a few open wounds that look like pressure sores and a lot have broken and bleeding skin from a flea allergy - they’re absolutely swarming with fleas.” Ms Tranter said the situation has pushed her to take serious action to make the chaining of dogs illegal. “Unfortunately it’s not illegal to chain dogs, so just by chaining a dog is not a violation of the law,” she said. “The code of practice isn’t mandatory, it doesn’t even matter what the code of practice says, it’s not mandatory it just a guide.” Ms Tranter was tipped off by an anonymous source to inspect the farm close to six weeks ago and entered the property up to eight times over the month of March to gain evidence. The owner fired shots at adjacent properties on Friday 15 April after discovering his property had been raided. He was arrested at the scene and released pending further investigations.

A 27-YEAR-OLD man has blamed drug abuse for an escalation of suspended driving offences, culminating in a police pursuit with his vehicle’s head and tail lights switched off. David Gasper, of Heyfield, pleaded guilty to several suspended driving charges in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 2 May, as well as to stealing and damaging a $1700 laser and assaulting a person with a staff and tripod in Dandenong in July. Also in July, he was caught driving suspended in an unregistered vehicle in Tinks Road, Narre Warren, then similarly caught in Kidds Road, Doveton, twice on 3 August. On 20 February, Gasper - while on bail was involved in the police pursuit that involved breaking through a road block and driving at a uniformed police officer who had directed him to stop his car in Traralgon. He was charged with reckless conduct endangering serious injury, dangerous driving and evading police, as well as failing to have an alcohol interlock and display P plates. Other charges included two counts of petrol stealing, three counts of driving without an alcohol interlock and three further driving suspended charges from July to December. Gasper’s lawyer said the accused “unravelled” after caring for a close family member dying of cancer. A break-up with his partner and three stepchildren had led to him living on the streets and couch-surfing, the court was told. Gasper’s alcohol problems were compounded by ice use, but he had now successfully detoxified, the lawyer said. “He’s gone a long way in a short period with his offending and also gone a long way with his rehabilitation.” Magistrate Jack Vandersteen took into account Gasper’s successful engagement in a drug and alcohol program which was in some ways more intensive than a corrections order. “David, you’re very lucky that you or someone else wasn’t killed. “If you hadn’t engaged in treatment, you would have got an immediate term of imprisonment.” Gasper was sentenced to a two-year community corrections order with 300 hours’ unpaid work and supervision. The order included substance treatment and mental health programs. Gasper was disqualified from driving for four years.

Innovation Fund launched CASEY mayor Sam Aziz unveiled a $100,000 Innovation Fund at a dinner with business leaders at Cranbourne Golf Club on Thursday 28 April. Cr Aziz said the fund would make available five interest free loans of $20,000 to Casey businesses to channel into innovative programs and projects. He said the first allocation will be made on 1 July this year and the fund will expand over time to help foster innovation throughout the business community. “The loans would be to a maximum of $20,000 per business,” Cr Aziz explained. “But as the fund grows by $100,000 each year, both the maximum quantum of the loan and the number of businesses receiving it will grow. “As the years go by, this growth could prove to be exponential and will have a massive impact on driving innovation and growth in Casey.” Cr Aziz said that innovation was defined as doing something in a new, create or novel way. “It may involve improving an existing service or product in an original way that increases its utility to the consumer or opens up new markets,” he said. “It may mean that an idea is radically different or equally it may mean that an idea addresses an everyday process in a revolutionary manner.” Cr Aziz hosted business leaders in the first of what he hopes will be regular catch-ups over dinner. “I have called you all together for the first time as key business figures in our city to share your wealth of experience across the municipality and to explore possibilities for the future,” he said. Jan Vydra from Clyde-based Australian Fresh Herbs explained to the crowd how his company had gone ahead through innovative processes. He explained how his team employed cloud technology, hydroponic methods and innovative practices to increase crop yield and improve customer experience. Search for cause talent BY JARROD McALEESE SINGERS are invited to participate in the third and final audition for the 2016 Star Search for a Cause Competition, which raises funds for the Cancer Council’s Relay for Life. The first two auditions ran on the 29 April and 1 May and Star Search for a Cause director Naomi Horsley encouraged performers of all ages to turn out to the final audition.

“We have had 40 people audition so far, mostly junior and intermediates. We are hoping to get more seniors and over 21s,” Ms Horsley said. This year’s edition will be the eighth annual running of the event, which has raised more than $20,000 since its inception. And the expansion of Star Search has led to the introduction of the

Cause We Care initiative, a wish granting service to be run in conjunction with the vocal competition. “Previously all of our funds have gone to the Cancer Council but this year we’re going to share it, with funds also going to our wish granting service. “We’re hoping to grant wishes to people who have cancer, whether it is someone who needs a break,

someone who needs a gardener or someone who needs a cleaner, if we can help, whether it’s an individual or a family, that’s what we want to do,” Ms Horsley said. Film dreams come to life By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS BUDDING film makers from Doveton College have trod the red carpet and dominated an international film-making competition. Four films from the Doveton College Live project were nominated in this year’s Child KidzFlicks awards. Two of them, Dreams Come Alive (best script) and The Haunting Hour (best sound), won their categories. As a treat, brothers Peter, 10, and Joel, 14, were flown up to Sydney by award organisers Bardic Studios to collect the trophies. On the way to the ceremony, the boys stopped off for a personal tour of the UTS filmmaking studios with animator Deborah Cameron. Gene Geoffrey, a film maker who heads the project, described the winning animated films as sophisticated in content and technique. About five students aged between 10 and 15 were involved

from concept to production, plotting scripts, moulding plasticine characters, writing music as well as filming the short works. “I really love the way they connect with these stories. They have very clear visions of what their animation is,” Mr Geoffrey said. “It’s very time consuming work. It takes months to make and they come back with new ideas each week - it shows how much they think on it.” Dreams Come Alive features a motley crew of characters including a skeletal Big Foot and a potion-mixing scientist who were seeking friendships and eventually meet in a nirvana dreamworld. Mr Geoffrey said the The Haunting Hour captured the creepy mood as one falls asleep at night. “It’s quite unnerving what comes out of young people’s minds,” he said. The works show the value in philanthropist Julius Colman’s investment in the college’s ani-

mated film and music program Doveton College Live. It’s engaged the students, giving many from disadvantaged backgrounds a sense of achievement, Mr Geoffrey said. The college boasts state-ofthe-art equipment such as SLR cameras, dolly tracks, Mac lab with a suite of film-making software and a fitted-out sound recording studio. There are even 3-D printers to create animated characters’ heads and dedicated teachers on hand to help make costumes in their own time. Over the past two years, works from Doveton College have won best film at the Australian Teachers of Media awards. “Not all of these students will become animators,” Mr Geoffrey said. “That’s not the point. “It’s about using teamwork and communication to create something. “These are the skills you need in any walk of life.”

Squishees squeeze it By RUSSELL BENNETT THE Pakenham Squishees are officially the most successful floorball club in the nation, winning the Australian Floorball Open for the fourth time in five years on the weekend. Pakenham, who also hosted the tournament, won the final 2-0 over Perth on Saturday afternoon after also shutting-out a team from Bondi in the semi-final earlier in the day. Gavin Staindl, who was named best on court in the decider, said one of the biggest strengths of the Pakenham side was its togetherness - with many players playing together at the same club for more than a decade. Pakenham conceded just five goals over six games in the tournament - a remarkable achievement for a sport with a scorecard that normally reads like that of a baseball game. “When you’re giving up five to 10 goals per game like we were six or seven years

ago, you quickly learn to play defense!” Staindl said. The Pakenham side is not only known for its togetherness, but also the selfless attitudes of its players. As a testament to that, no Pakenham players were named as All-Stars for the tournament. “We don’t play for individual accolades,” he said. “We’ve got superstars, but no one players for individual points or MVP awards.” The Squishees have seven national representatives in their senior side, while the under-19s have a number of them as well. Staindl said forward Jeremy Monckton and goalkeeper Ryan Alexandrakis were two of the standout players of the tournament for Pakenham. But Staindl’s performance was remarkable, in itself. THE Pakenham Warriors took a big step forward in their ongoing battle for consistency on the weekend, with Jeff Reid’s Big V basketball Division 2 men’s side trouncing Craigieburn at Cardinia Life on Saturday night 85-60. The result came after the disappointment the week before of a 14-point loss to Collingwood, with Reid suggesting his side’s lift in intensity was the biggest key. “We came out with great intensity right from the start of the game,” he said. “The boys were really focussed and switched on.” Pakenham kept Craigieburn to just eight points in the first quarter on just 13 per cent shooting - setting the defensive mindset for the remainder of the clash. SLITHERING into its NRL Victoria junior debut, the Pakenham Eels Rugby League Club made the most of its first official outing on Saturday. The area’s newest rugby league team had junior sides from Under 7s, 9s, 10s, 12s, 14s and Girls Tag head out onto Casey Fields for the club’s inaugural matches. The Eels wore the Casey’s former uniforms - with the Eel’s yellow-and-blue colours still on order - but the results were particularly pleasing for Pakenham throughout the day. It all started in the morning as Khorus O’Carroll, an Eels’ Under 7s player, ran in the club’s inaugural try. The other major first was ticked off by the Eels on Saturday too; its Girls Tag team claimed a monster 48-12 victory over Werribee Bears Black to be the first players to celebrate a Pakenham win. Eels president Jason Buchanan was thrilled to see the Eels’ juniors make the first steps of their rugby league journeys. “It was a pretty good day and all were pretty excited for the run,” Buchanan said. “There were some sleepless nights leading up to the game day.

“Seeing all our age groups, the younger ones and the players who haven’t played before or a few years, was great - especially as some of these teams have only been playing a core group for a few weeks.” The good news keeps coming for the Eels as the side managed to scrape together the numbers necessary for a senior men’s team. The side will debut in the Round 4 clash on Saturday - with its NRL Victoria Second Division opponent and inaugural outing to be confirmed this week. “We’ve got them entering the competition this coming week - take the field for this weekend,” Buchanan said. “While they’re coming in for round four, hopefully we can come in and put a bit of a challenge up for the teams and get a bit of interest out there. “Just want to keep the momentum going for seniors and juniors as we then want to fill that space in hopefully with Under 16s and Under 18s and give them something to look to.” The club is still on the hunt for players - especially in its Under 12 and Under 14 teams - and for more information on joining the Eels, contact the club at info@pakenhamrlc.com or its Facebook page www. facebook.com/pakenhamrlc.

Eagles remain unbeaten and confident By DAVID NAGEL THE calm before the storm - it’s a saying that perfectly sums up Cranbourne’s 44-point South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) victory over a gallant Officer at Casey Fields on Saturday night. The Eagles overcame a plucky start from the Kangaroos - who were wasteful with the wind in the first term - to forge ahead after quarter time and remain unbeaten ahead of this week’s monster clash with Berwick. The Eagles made one change for the clash under lights with star-forward Michael Theodoridis coming in for Brad Hermans, who split his finger open on Thursday. The Eagles ran the ball beautifully into the wind in the first term, Aaron Bower, Shaun Sparks and Dylan Cavalot providing the run that the Eagles hope will take them a long way this year. But the Kangaroos had their chances, with class ball users like Ben Tivendale and Chris Larosa missing first-quarter opportunities to apply some scoreboard pressure. The start of the second quarter showed the difference between the two sides.

Ryan Jones, Luke Bee-Hugo and Jarrod Murphy all took advantage of half opportunities to help extend the Eagles’ lead to five goals by the main break. The game was effectively won and lost by then. Theodoridis kicked four for the winners, with Murphy, Jones and Mat Fletcher contributing two each, while the run and carry of Bower off half back and through the centre - was a key feature of the night. Anthony Vella and Brandon Osborne joined forces to quell the influence of Matthew Clarke, who still kicked two goals in a losing side for the Roos. Big-man Sean Roach continued his fine start to the season; Dylan Chapman contested well in the ruck and up forward, while James Sloothaak took to the mammoth job of taking on Cranbourne star Marc Holt with much enthusiasm. Looking ahead to this week’s match-ups - we’re about to find out a lot more about Pakenham and Doveton when the two teams square off in a real season-definer at Toomuc Reserve on Saturday. Both teams are coming off surprise losses, the Lions down to Officer before the bye, while Doveton lacked penetration in its four-goal

loss to Beaconsfield last weekend. Doves’ coach Steve O’Brien is having the same trouble as his predecessor Shannon Henwood, with a constant turnover of players making it impossible to get his best team on the park. The Doves have already used 35 players this year to be the clear front-runners in that regard. The biggest problem for Doveton is its lack of ability to convert. The Doves have played five games this season with small-forward Mitch Pierce leading their goal-kicking tally with seven. And no other player has kicked more than three goals for the season. And that task won’t be helped this week with the Lions expected to regain their star defender Nathan Brown for his first game for the year. The loser of this clash will fall right behind the eight-ball, and it’s that desperation in front of a large home crowd that will get the Lions home in the end. It’s the other Steve O’Bryan to claim the choccies by 17 points. The late Divinyls lead singer Chrissy Amphlett said it all when it comes to Officer’s upcoming clash

with Tooradin at Starling Road: It’s a fine line between pleasure and pain. Expect a really tight contest between two teams that are desperate to keep their seasons on track. The Kangaroos are looking to make a giant leap ahead of their Round 7 bye while the Seagulls simply need to win to restore some confidence. They’ve been terrible of late, but have the quality to turn things around. Nick Lang, Matt Livermore and Josh Muling will need to lift their team to new heights this weekend with upcoming games against Berwick, Beaconsfield and Doveton set to define the Seagulls’ season. As for the Kangaroos, well they can really emerge over the next fortnight. Their Round 3 victory over Pakenham has set them up nicely, while a win here and another against Hampton Park next week would leave them feeling pretty satisfied with a 3-3 start to the season. Players like clearance-king Chris Larosa, Sean Roach, Blair Allan and Jesse Longmuir won’t let this one slip - it’s the Kangaroos to inflict some pain with a one-point victory.

Heading for the Outback By ALISTAIR KENNEDY WHEN it was launched two decades ago the Subaru Outback was at the forefront of the steady rise in popularity of car based SUVs. For most of this boom period Outback has been a consistent but unspectacular sales performer which, despite Subaru’s clever mechanical engineering, was overlooked for taller, more stylish and cheaper competitors. All that changed with the arrival of the latest, fifth-generation, model in December 2014. Price cuts of between $2000 and $10,000 were the hook that got potential buyers into the Subaru showrooms where they were presented with a significantly improved vehicle in terms of size, styling and interior quality The impact was immediate and spectacular with sales increasing by more than 400 per cent over the previous (admittedly poor) year to just under 11,000 sales. The year was then capped off with the Outback 2.5i Premium taking out the Best AWD SUV under $50,000 category in the 2015 Australia’s Best Cars Awards; although it did so by tipping out its Forester stablemate. Despite some minor price increases a February 2016 upgrade has accelerated sales even further with a number of new safety and convenience features

including an upgraded version of the Subaru EyeSight system and a new Vision Assist feature in all but the entrylevel model. Engine size identifies the five Outback variants: 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.0D, 2.0D Premium and 3.6R. Outback comes with the choice of three horizontally-opposed engines - a 2.5-litre four-cylinder and 3.6-litre sixcylinder petrol, and a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged diesel. Power and torque peaks are 129 kW and 235 Nm (2.5i); 191 kW and 350 Nm (3.6R); and 110 kW and 350 Nm (2.0D). Top torque comes in at 4000 rpm, 4400 rpm and 1800-2800 rpm respectively. All models come with continuously variable transmission with a seven-ratio manual override available via steering wheel mounted paddle-shifters. The 2.0D and 2.0D Premier diesel models get the option of six-speed manual. Although Outback doesn’t have the extra height of the typical SUV there’s plenty of headroom, even with a sunroof, and the interior is spacious and comfortable with room for five adults. Seats are large and supportive with eight-way front seat power adjustment in the Premium and 3.6R. There’s good visibility all round once you get used to the distraction of the large Subaru’s EyeSight box at the top of the windscreen.

Maximum cargo area volume ranges from 512 litres with the rear seatbacks in place to 1801 litres with them folded. Spare wheels are full-sized – 17inch in the 2.0D, 18-inch in all other models. All models have an automatic boot release button on the key fob. Equipment levels are high with all Outback variants getting collision avoidance features such as Subaru’s Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) system comprising ABS brakes with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and Brake Assist; Electronic Stability Control; Traction Control with Limited Slip device; and Active Torque Vectoring System. Halogen daytime running lights, Hill Hold, electronic parking brake and reversing camera are also standard across the range. New with the 2016 upgrade for the two Premium variants and the 3.6R are Vision Assist features including Blind Spot Monitoring; Lane Change Assist; High Beam Assist; auto-dimming rear view mirror; and our favourite, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, which sounds an alert when another vehicle is approaching when reversing out of a parking space. If these avoidance measures fail to prevent a crash there are collision protection features including seven airbags; whiplash reduction seats; safety
