By GEORGIA WESTGARTH A STICKER book aimed at children and sold in the kids section at a Hampton Park variety store has the F-word on every page.

The ‘Angry Birds’ themed six-page book features the well-known red bird, ‘Terence’, smoking and wearing a snap back and bandana, with a speech bubble which reads, “Mather f*****�.

A rebellious Terence appears in this state on each page among other Angry Birds characters.

Pakenham mother of six, Tammy Wells, bought the offending sticker book on Friday 29 April unaware of what lay inside. “I purchased two sticker books from the variety shop for my three-year-old daughter,� Ms Wells said. “They only cost about $2 each, and the female sales assistant never said anything to me. “One turned out to be completely fine, but I couldn’t believe what I was seeing when my eight-year-old son pointed it out to me.�

Ms Wells said the front cover was quite misleading and took to social media to warn others. “I’ve bought Angry Birds merchandise before and never had an issue, it’s a children’s cartoon and normally I wouldn’t think twice to buy something of that nature,� Ms Wells said. “The front cover looked harmless.�

Ms Wells has confiscated the book from her daughter Sophie, but said she was “really disgusted�. “I’m lucky my son was playing with Sophie at the time and spelt it out to me because he knows he’s not allowed to swear, but he knew it wasn’t right, he asked me what it means,� she said. “I can’t believe that it is being sold as a kid’s book and there were others for sale - they have to be taken off the shelf.�

A Pakenham resident of 10 years, Ms Wells said she rarely went to Hampton Park and wouldn’t be shopping there again. “You expect a shop to check their deliveries before misleading customers,� she said.

The made in China sticker book was sold at a discount store in Hampton Park Shopping Centre on Hallam Road.

Star News has made contact with the Hampton Park Shopping Centre and is awaiting a response.

A CRANBOURNE local has taken the fight against a Dan Murphy’s super barn into his own hands and plans to present a petition of more than 2000 signatures to the State Government seeking urgent reform.

Casey Neighbourhood Watch president Rob Ward said the approval of a discount liquor store in Cranbourne East despite a chorus of objections from those in the know was “nonsensical.”

Mr Ward said the issue highlighted a flaw in liquor licensing legislation surrounding amenity.

Burglar flees empty-handed

A CLYDE homeowner witnessed a burglar fleeing over their back fence after the thief had broken into their home.

The victim woke to see their rear sliding door open and a person running to the back fence before jumping it and entering the neighbouring property.

The offender had broken into the Green Gully Road home, about 5am on Saturday 30 April.

Police have confirmed nothing seemed to be missing from the home despite the intrusion.

A CAR crash in Cranbourne has taken the life of a Junction Village woman over the weekend.

The 32-year-old woman was airlifted to hospital with critical injuries, and died hours later.

She was driving a black Chrysler sedan when the accident occurred around noon on Saturday 30 April.

It’s believed a Honda station wagon was travelling north on Cameron Street when it collided with the southbound Chrysler sedan.

The driver of the Honda, a 37-year-old Cranbourne man, was also airlifted to hospital with critical injuries.

The drivers were the only occupants in the two vehicles.

The exact cause of the collision is being investigated by Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives.

Detectives were still examining the scene at 4.30pm on Saturday.

NO-ONE in Australia has achieved what Joshua Thomas has.

No-one in the country has lived to 19 years of age with the progressive brain condition Joshua has.

And no-one can say they’ve got a photograph slam dunking a basketball with their canine friend, 10ft off the ground. But Joshua can.

The Cranbourne teenager had his dream of being an NBA star materialised, with a little heart, and a little magic photography from award-winning local artist Karen Alsop.

A super dream, a super labrador and a goodwill project aiming to brighten up the lives of youth living with a disability or illness through clever photography, has provided some much-needed light for the Thomas family.

The eldest of three children, Joshua was born with Vein of Galen malformation, which means blood doesn’t disperse around the brain properly.

Joshua’s condition is now considered progressive, and he began deteriorating in 2012.

The uncommon condition means Joshua suffers from dementia, strokes, seizures, left weakness, epilepsy and intellectual disabilities.

But it hasn’t stopped him from enjoying the sport he loves, basketball.

“Josh has always wanted to play NBA and plays in his school team at Nepean School,” Mum, Mette said.

But it wasn’t until Mette heard about Guys Hill photographer Karen Alsop’s quest for models for ‘The heART Project’ that Joshua’s dream was truly realised.

“I contacted Karen, and it’s all been done within a month,” a grateful mother said.

The heART Project is a collaboration between The Sebastian Foundation, founded by Australian pop singer Guy and his wife Jules Sebas-

“I’m going to set a deadline to the end of May and with those signatures will present the petition to the State Government.”

Casey Council will be appealing to the State Government for urgent reform of the Liquor Control Reform Act 1998 to ensure it gives greater regard to alcohol harms, including family violence occurring in homes and private places.

Four chords for Cranbourne

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH IT WAS a song about Cranbourne that had the Horsham Country Music Festival crowd craving more from local singer-songwriter Sharon Start.

The 56-year-old ukulele music teacher from Cranbourne West wrote the suburban song five years ago to commemorate a special milestone.

Ms Start had notched up 25 years living in the same house, in the same suburb, and named the song Once Was a Country Town as she delved into her memories of the area to write the lyrics.

“I had lived a quarter of a century in Cranbourne and raised my three sons, I wanted to do something special to celebrate,” Ms Start said.

After the words came so effortlessly, Ms Start, who was perplexed on a tune and melody to go with the song, left the project unfinished - until she heard of the busking competition at the Horsham Country Music Festival.

“I decided to put comedy rock band The Axis of Awesome theory to the test about how all songs can be played using just four chords,” she said.

Ms Start, an active folk musician, had never performed country music but packed her banjolele for the weekend away.

Unable to score a place in the competition, she was delighted after fate stepped in.

“It was so bizarre, the organiser had told me there were no places left, he said unless someone dies you won’t get to perform ... I was so disappointed,” she said.

But with her instruments tuned and a spot to be filled at the last minute, Ms Start was the only performer ready to sing.

“I was an unknown singer, in front of unknown audience, singing an original song, to a tune of just four chords,” she said laughing.

“But I got to perform, I achieved my goal and sang the Cranbourne song but all of a sudden the audience started cheering for more.”

Set on singing just one song, Ms Start left the festival having sung three and winning the most popular busker award out of the 23 performers.

Aware of the novelty of it all, a thrilled Ms Start said: “I mean, no one writes a song about Cranbourne!”

The old ‘lost dog’ trick

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A GREEN-wedge conservation group has advised proponents of a proposed mosque in Narre Warren North to find another site in Casey.

Rosalie Counsell, convenor of Save the Casey Foothills Association, said the Islamic community was entitled to a place of worship but 365-367 Belgrave-Hallam Road was the wrong location.

“The Islamic community is entitled to have a place to worship. (It) would be more appropriately situated within the urban area, readily accessible to the majority of its patrons.

“Surely it would be better for the Saarban group to abandon the purchase of the Narre Warren North site and work cooperatively with Council to find a more suitable one.”

“That the proponents of the Narre Warren North mosque have

played this card is disappointing enough, but it is disgraceful that news reports have been so unbalanced, ill-informed and inflammatory.”

Despite vocal pro-mosque protests, Casey Council rejected the project on several planning

grounds on 26 April.

Casey's mayor Sam Aziz strongly denied the council was swayed by Islamophobic arguments.

The council found the project’s scale and intensity was out of place with its green-wedge and rural foothill location.

VicRoads had also objected due to its traffic impact, meaning the council was legally required to knock back the application.

Ms Counsell said the proponent, Saarban Islamic Trust, had plans to expand on the site, potentially adding a large school and other “urban-type facilities” to its proposed mosque.

“The mosque alone would have been jarringly out of context in these foothills to the Dandenong Ranges.”

She said development was constrained by stringent planning

policies to protect the foothills.

Saarban Islamic Trust spokesman Zain Shah said an altered proposal was being considered, but not a change of site.

Mr Shah said the place-ofworship was urgently needed, with would-be attendees unable to fit in an existing mosque on Belgrave-Hallam Road.

He said there were still plans to expand on the 450-person proposed mosque in about 10 years’ time - taking into account Casey’s future population growth.

Mr Shah said he planned to meet again with the council over the proposal, describing last week’s events as “unnecessary hype” due to being targeted by anti-Islamic protest.

“We have nothing against anybody. We will just follow the rules and regulations of the council.”

Animal activist is pushing for dog chain ban

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH THE founder of Oscar’s Law - who planted hidden cameras in a Blind Bight farm - now plans to use the “torturous” footage to push for the chaining of dogs to be made illegal.

Debra Tranter said what she witnessed at the Wild Duck Way acreage farm was “absolutely barbaric”.

“The dogs are chained to poles and some trees all day, on short leads of around two metres,” the animal activist said.

“I am going to write to Minister for Agriculture, Jaala Pulford and use this case to highlight that we need to change the legislation around chaining dogs.”

American bulldogs, pitbulls and Staffordshire bull terriers was sent by Oscar’s Law to the RSPCA on Thursday 14 April.

Police, RSPCA and a Casey Council by-laws officer searched the family farm the following day, slapping a compliance notice on the male owner to rectify the welfare concerns.

The RSPCA did not seize any of the dogs on the day but will continue to monitor the case.

Ms Tranter and her team of two scanned the animals and found that majority of the hidden dogs were “not microchipped and therefore not registered”.

“We are urging the Casey Council to lay charges for unregistered dogs and the number of dogs on the property,” she said.

Under Section 11 of the City of Casey

Community Local Law, it states a person who owns or occupies land of 4000 square metres or more must not, except with a permit, keep more than four dogs or cats.

However two weeks after the raid the Casey Council has not charged the man with holding more than four unregistered dogs on his land.

Ms Tranter said some of the dogs were underweight and spent their days tied up and scratching at their infected skin.

“They are very friendly, there are no signs of wounds or scars from fighting but the dogs are in bad condition,” she said.

“One has a few open wounds that look like pressure sores and a lot have broken and bleeding skin from a flea allergy they’re absolutely swarming with fleas.”

Ms Tranter said the situation has pushed

her to take serious action to make the chaining of dogs illegal.

“Unfortunately it’s not illegal to chain dogs, so just by chaining a dog is not a violation of the law,” she said.

Ms Tranter was tipped off by an anonymous source to inspect the farm close to six weeks ago and entered the property up to eight times over the month of March to gain evidence.

The owner fired shots at adjacent properties on Friday 15 April after discovering his property had been raided.

He was arrested at the scene and released pending further investigations.

A MAN’S trusting and good nature turned sour when he was preyed on by a driveby thief in a Narre Warren street robbery.

The 26-year-old male victim was lured to help the man, when the offender told him that he had lost his dog.

The victim was walking along Sweeney Drive in Narre Warren when the tattooed man driving a Toyota Corolla approached him from the driver’s seat.

Detective Senior Sergeant, Rob Clark, said the driver asked to make a call from the pedestrian’s phone because he had lost his dog.

“The victim asked for the number and dialled it on behalf of the driver and when it didn’t work he dialled the same number again,” Det Clark said.

“The offender then grabbed the phone and has driven a short distance with the victim still holding on and has then taken off.”

The street side robbery occurred around 3.15am on Wednesday 27 April. Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

I WOULD like to respond to the letter Rate Voices Rise (Berwick and Cranbourne News, 28 April 2016).

It is important, when talking about council’s necessary application to the Essential Services Commission for a variation to the State Government imposed rate cap, that we present accurate facts.

Council’s decision to apply for a 0.97 per cent variation was made after undertaking extensive research, community consultation and budgetary forecasting.

Two community consultation forums were held in October and December 2015 to seek community input. Residents told us they were not willing to compromise on their expectations regarding community facilities and services.

A rejection of council’s application for a variation will only disappoint the author further as it will be his children and their friends who will miss out on opportunities when facilities cannot be completed.

While council agrees that the education of Casey’s children is vital to our community future, school education is not the domain of local government.

The author should pursue this campaign with the State and Federal Governments.

In addition, council does not financially invest in shopping complexes rather we are active in ensuring that proposed retail applications meet planning requirements for the area which take into account social, economic and geographic factors.

Council does, however, offer support to local businesses to provide employment opportunities for our residents.

Council aims to ensure we maintain the lifestyle residents want and deserve.

IN RESPONSE to Mr Flannery’s letter Writing On The Walls (Berwick and Cranbourne News, 28 April 2106), council is pleased to share that it’s Clean Up Your Act campaign has quite literally paid off, in the form of $300,000!

The funding was announced to remove unsightly graffiti which lines the Monash Freeway in the Victorian Government’s 2016/17 budget, shortly after the Star News would have gone to print last week.

Council shares Mr Flannery’s concerns about the lack of response by VicRoads to this endemic problem and the cost to Council to actively campaign for action.

This is a huge victory and we are glad to be able to put plans for billboards, encouraging residents to support the campaign on hold, saving ratepayers’ money.

The key now is for VicRoads to clean up the graffiti swiftly - the sooner we get to the problem the sooner we can prevent recurrent instances of vandalism.

Cr Aziz, who is the Victorian Spokesperson for the National Growth Areas Alliance Fund Our Future Campaign, welcomed the State Govement contribution but said much more was needed to finish the project.

“It’s encouraging that the State Government is listening.

While this is step in the right direction, the funding does not fully address a solution to the transport bottleneck at the intersection of Westernport Highway and Thompsons Road and does not complete the needed connection of Thompsons Road from Clyde Road through to Cardinia,” Cr Aziz said.

“The Thompsons Road extension is urgently required to facilitate development of employment land in Casey and Cardinia and the provision of local job opportunities for these communities. A funding commitment of $190 million is still required from the Federal

Government to ensure a high standard regional arterial connection is delivered through to Cardinia.

“The Victorian Government has already allocated funding to commence the duplication, however, the removal of the Westernport Highway bottleneck and the completion of a high standard connection between the residential areas of Casey and employment land in Cardinia cannot be finished without Federal Government funding.”

The City of Casey and Shire of Cardinia are part of a national campaign, Fund our Future, which is pushing for a

national dedicated infrastructure fund that would address the infrastructure backlog in fast-growing outer suburbs and future-proof them, as they continue to grow.

“A dedicated infrastructure fund for fast-growing outer suburbs would support projects like Thompsons Road based on merit and good planning – not on election cycles,” Cr Aziz said.

Vegies on the grow WEEKLY growth is nothing new on a farm, but Pearcedale’s Vegie Bunch is seeing it on the books, not just in the fields.

The Crawford family business started in Tasmania with George, who mostly grew spuds and peas for the canneries.

His son Bill ventured across the seas to Victoria at the age of 17 and worked for other growers until he could afford his own property, in the early 1960s.

He and his wife Winifred had eight children - David and Stephen the eldest, and the two continuing the family tradition.

Stephen today works a 100-acre property at Five Ways while David, with his wife Shona, manage 12 acres at Pearcedale.

Shona stepped into the business about 15 years ago.

“I wasn’t always a farmer. I used to work in an office,” she said.

“David’s father started doing markets and he suggested that I do the Pakenham Farmers’ Market.

“It was the pioneering days of farmers’ markets so there were a few starting up.

“I loved it.”

The monthly market inspired her to swap the office for the farm, and now she takes fresh produce to four markets a month - Kingston, Nunawading, Essendon and Seaford.

The farm’s crops include potato, pumpkin, beetroot, Dutch carrots, herbs, rhubarb, cauliflower, zucchini,

Shona’s business partner Rebecca initially came on-board to help David take care of his 40-dog greyhound breeding and racing program.

“Then Rebecca started helping us on occasion to do the greens,” Shona said.

“I wanted to do online orders and I said to Rebecca that I didn’t think I could do it all on my own, so I asked her if she’d like to join.“ They deliver to Botanic Ridge, Langwarrin, Cranbourne South, Pearcedale and Baxter.

“I always wanted to sell vegetables to local residents - super fresh vegies, straight from the farm,” Shona said.

“That was my initial concept.”

She’s just brought her niece Michelle, 20, into the mix.

“I’ve just started, so I’m doing every Wednesday and Thursday and then I help out with markets as well,” Michelle said.

“We’re nearly at the stage where we needed somebody else, and Michelle’s been doing markets since she was 10 years old,” Shona said.

“She’s family, so she used to go to market with her grandfather.”

Shona expects the business will continue to grow while Rebecca is on maternity leave, to accommodate work for all three of them.

“We’re growing each week. Our business grows a little bit bigger than it was before,” she said.

“It’s exciting. We get tired but it is exciting.

“Where does it end? I don’t know.

No guns for you: judge

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A MAN on a community corrections order found driving a stolen car with four stolen firearms and goods linked to a Hampton Park home burglary has been told by a judge he’s “exactly the sort of person who shouldn’t be in possession of a firearm”.

Sargis Mkrtchyan, 24, pleaded guilty to offences including suspected proceeds of crime, theft of motor vehicle, drug possession and being a prohibited person possessing firearms in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 2 May. However the charge of trafficking unregistered firearms was dropped due to the arms being registered by the rightful owner.

The weapons had been stolen from a gun safe in a Rosebud home burglary in late March.

In April, Mkrtchyan allegedly crashed a car stolen from Sandringham into a parked vehicle. The latter vehicle moved six feet as a result of the crash, the court was told.

He exchanged identity details with the other car owner

and was later located by police in a stolen Mazda with stolen number plates outside a Dandenong home.

Inside the car were shotguns from the Rosebud burglary as well as shotgun cartridges, ecstasy tablets, morphine, ice, syringes, and a laser pointer.

Police seized “numerous” suspected stolen items such as phones and car keys, the court was told.

Police also seized items believed to be used for burglaries such as latex gloves, Ninja gloves, four torches, a back pack, hatchet, axe and bolt-cutter, prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Kerryn Steyn said.

In a police interview, Mkrtchyan admitted to possessing drugs of dependence and ammunition, and driving offences but claimed he had no knowledge of the stolen property.

He’d been with a friend called Jason who had given him the suspected stolen car keys, he told police.

Mkrtchyan’s lawyer urged the court not to impose a crushing sentence given the accused’s young age.

The accused had relapsed into drug use and had doubts

he’d get parole given he’d previously breached parole following a jail term for armed robbery.

The lawyer said there was an argument that the accused didn’t know about the guns which were wrapped in a bag and that much of the suspected stolen property was not stolen but was the proceeds of crime.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said some of the defence was “marginal” and the criminality at a “high end”.

Mkrtchyan was on a community corrections order at the time of the offending for theft of a vehicle, burglary and failing to stop for police.

Mr Vandersteen re-sentenced the accused on those older offences.

“He has had the opportunity and hasn’t made the most of it by re-offending and actual noncompliance (with the corrections order).

“He’s exactly the sort of person who shouldn’t be in possession of a firearm and he’s associating with people who shouldn’t have firearms at all.”

Mkrtchyan was jailed for 15 months with a non-parole period of nine months.

Daredevil targeted: rare bikes stolen

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH CRANBOURNE’S own highpowered daredevil was targeted by thieves who cut a hole in his shed roof to access the rare motorcross machinery.

Three of Cameron Sinclair’s custom-made motorcycles designed for use in his aerial performances with global sensation, Nitro Circus, were stolen from his Cranbourne South property.

Offenders broke into a neighbour’s shed and stole tools which they used to break one of the locks on Mr Sinclair’s shed.

“They didn’t get through the second lock so jumped onto the roof and sawed a hole and gained entry that way,” Mr Sinclair said.

The extremely distinct bikes worth upward of $12,000 were to be used by Mr Sinclair in his upcoming Nitro Circus performance.

The 32-year-old stunt rider said he was alerted to the burglary which occurred on Saturday 23 April by his father-inlaw.

Casey CIU is currently investigating the stolen bikes which have been seen in the area.

Senior Constable Alannah Goldsack said the offenders escaped on the bikes and that numerous sources had come forward with sightings since.

“The bikes have been spotted being ridden in open space under powerlines in Cranbourne North,” Const Goldsack said.

“People are recognising the bikes, but we haven’t had anybody identified,” she said.

WORDS fail sometimes, even for criminal defence lawyers.

The lawyer represented a man in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court who had head-butted a person outside a bowls club, swung a knife at a party-goer, tried to break into two cars and punched holes into his father’s house.

Aside from conceding her client had a booze and ice problem, the lawyer said the best explanation was “he had no good explanation”.

HERE’S a reminder on how hard it is to be a cop or a paramedic.

Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard of emergency services being called to a young woman behaving irrationally outside a supermarket.

The woman swung a punch at

a police officer and as she was restrained in an ambulance she repeatedly spat upon, kicked and lashed out at a paramedic.

The police officer was then bitten, fortunately without piercing their glove or skin.

The woman was sedated and taken to Casey Hospital, though the ambulance stopped three times on the way due to the woman’s behaviour.

Her lawyer told the court the woman had been engaging well on a community corrections order.

“This was just an episode,” the lawyer said.

The judge noted her own sympathies for the emergency services officers involved.

TEN of the 33 youths charged

and summonsed over the Moomba riot have suspected links to the so-called Apex Gang, but copycat offenders are still playing havoc in the south-east.

Cranbourne’s top cop, Senior Sergeant Phil Atkins, told Star News that the term now used to refer to ongoing car thefts and home invasions is “Apex-style offending”.

“There are members of Apex still around, some are in jail but it’s still going on,” Sgt Atkins said.

And not all of them are a part of the infamous gang.

“We believe there’s similar style offending. The message is be vigilant, lock car doors, windows, garages and back doors,” he said.

OLIVER Kellett of Berwick had a lucky escape when his immaculately-kept car emerging unscathed from Tuesday’s storms. He had parked on the nature strip overnight on 2-3 May, under a three-metre-plus gum tree which then “decided to have a lie down”. “The crazy thing is that as close as it is, there’s not even any dirt on the front of the car.” He said the upside is Casey Council promptly removed the tree, allowing for more parking space in front of the Kellett home.

Close to 200 works from across Victoria will compete for honours in 15 categories and the prestigious Victorian Architecture Medal.

Simon Whibley Architecture’s Art Space, a reconfigurable gallery which displays the work of local artists in libraries both in Cranbourne and around Casey and SJB Architects’ Alarah Townhouses located in Cranbourne West are nominated for the Small Project Architecture and Residential Architecture - Houses (Multiple Housing) awards respectively.

Shopping on Clyde by ClarkeHopkinsClarke Architects, a project that celebrates the history and future growth of the community is a contender for the Commercial Architecture award.

Entries will be featured at No Vacancy Gallery, QV from 7-19 June 2016.

Shortlists will be finalised in early May, and winners announced on Friday 24 June at 7pm at a presentation event held at Peninsula at Central Pier, Docklands.

On average, one woman is killed every week at the hands of a current or former partner. One in three women has been a victim of physical or sexual violence, since the age of 15, from someone known to them.

One in four young people are prepared to excuse violence from a partner.

This is a cycle of violence, which starts with disrespect.

Not all disrespect towards women results in violence.

But all violence against women starts with disrespectful behaviour.

When we make excuses like “It’s just boys being boys”, we allow boys to develop attitudes that can lead to violence. We raise girls to expect ridicule from boys when we tell them “He’s only doing it because he likes you”.

When we do confront unacceptable behaviour, we play it down by saying “Don’t worry, it wasn’t that bad”.

We’re allowing disrespect to become a normal part of growing up.

By doing so, we are unintentionally part of the problem.

We can all become part of the solution.

STOP the excuses.

START a conversation about respect with boys and girls.

Hope for extra cops

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH THE Cranbourne Police Station’s officer in charge hopes to get extra boots on the ground in the State Budget’s $596 million crime crackdown investment.

The priority station services the country’s fastest growing suburb with 76 uniform members and has done so for more than two years.

Senior Sergeant in charge, Phil Atkins said just two or three extra frontline police would mean the difference between

pro-active and reactive policing.

“That’s 10 shifts a week - I can put an extra car out five days a week,” he said.

The State Budget detailed a multi-million dollar Public Safety Package, including funds for 300 frontline police to be deployed across Victoria.

Sgt Atkins said with Cranbourne East reported to be growing by 88 people per week, even two extra cops on the beat would make a huge difference to their policing effort.

“We’re trying to catch up with popula-

tion in resourcing, so we move resources around but two or three extra frontline police really does make a difference.

“I can put out that extra vehicle on patrol in peak afternoon periods and on the major arterial roads that run through here.”

Sgt Atkins, who has worked out of the Cranbourne station for just over two years, said staffing numbers hadn’t changed in that time.

“If someone leaves or gets promoted they are replaced but 76 is our core - if

we go above that you’re happy,” he said.

State Opposition leader, Matthew Guy said the delivery was not enough.

“Pakenham police station was fire bombed recently, the City of Casey is nearly as big as metro Canberra and yet you sometimes have one divisional van operating at night,” Mr Guy said.

“The Police Association is saying they need 2000 extra frontline police, the State Government has given them 300.

“Police are overstretched, over worked and under resourced.”

Brekky with the best of friends CRANBOURNE Primary School was a part of 78 schools to launch breakfast programs across the state this month.

Breaky co-ordinator Mary Doolan said the re-launch of the morning munch was very well received at the school.

“We can get between 20 and 30 students some mornings,” Ms Doolan said.

“They go off with a full tummy and play lunch as well, a muesli bar or piece fruit and in winter the numbers rise again.”

The State Government reports that one in seven Victorian children arrive at school hungry, but Ms Doolan said some children had joined her club to socialise.

“Some students come as a social outing, but for a lot of them

The State Government has partnered with Foodbank to deliver breakfast clubs to 500 government primary schools.

Parking is far from fine SELFISH Casey motorists are being slugged thousands of dollars in parking fines for depriving disabled residents of the in-demand bays.

Close to 14,000 Casey residents hold disabled parking permits yet the council is inundated with an endless flow of complaints about misuse of the sought after bays.

Mayor Sam Aziz said in January and February this year around 200 infringements were issued in Casey over disabled parking bays.

“The council is appealing to all drivers in the community to respect the purpose of car parks for people with a disability,” Cr Aziz said.

“The disabled parking bays make the difference for a person with a disability and their carer to be able to have equitable access in the community.”

The illegal use of the high-demand bays can cost drivers who exploit them up to $152.

Concerned about recent dimension changes made to new disabled bays, the Casey council has written to Standards Australia.

Cr Amanda Stapledon said: “Revised disabled parking bay width of 2.4m does not provide the flexibility for positioning a car into the bay that the previous 3.2m space provided.”

Delta wows crowd

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH DELTA Goodrem attracted an adoring crowd at a live Westfield Fountain Gate performance, some waiting 10 hours to get a glimpse of the pop princess.

The former Ramsay Street teenager was booked to sing and sign copies of her new single, Dear Life, at 5.30pm on Thursday 28 April.

But some eager fans couldn’t wait that long, arriving at the centre 10 hours before the show.

“I got here at 9am, but some people had been here since 7.30am,” Alisha Austin said.

“I’ve been here all day but it was worth it.”

The 22-year-old Cranbourne Li-

ons Club member has battled with the pain of endometriosis for six years and said Goodrem had been a source of inspiration.

“If Delta can beat cancer, I figure I can get through this,” she said.

Alisha patiently lined up for more than two hours before the golden girl jumped on stage and sang Dear Life, Wings and snippets from her well known hits.

“I gave her a T-shirt embroided with ‘I fight like a girl’. She loved it and I got lots of hugs,” Alisha said.

Goodrem signed hundreds of posters and had photos taken with every fan by a Westfield Fountain Gate photographer.

Innovation Fund launched CASEY mayor Sam Aziz unveiled a $100,000 Innovation Fund at a dinner with business leaders at Cranbourne Golf Club on Thursday 28 April.

Cr Aziz said the fund would make available five interest free loans of $20,000 to Casey businesses to channel into innovative programs and projects.

He said the first allocation will be made on 1 July this year and the fund will expand over time to help foster innovation throughout the business community.

“The loans would be to a maximum of $20,000 per business,” Cr Aziz explained.

“But as the fund grows by $100,000 each year, both the maximum quantum of the loan and the number of businesses receiving it will grow.

“As the years go by, this growth could prove to be exponential and will have a massive impact on driving innovation and growth in Casey.”

Cr Aziz said that innovation was defined as doing something in a new, create or novel way.

“It may involve improving an existing service or product in an original way that increases its utility to the consumer or opens up new markets,” he said.

“It may mean that an idea is radically different or equally it may mean that an idea addresses an everyday process in a revolutionary manner.”

Cr Aziz hosted business leaders in the first of what he hopes will be regular catch-ups over dinner.

“I have called you all together for

the first time as key business figures in our city to share your wealth of experience across the municipality and to explore possibilities for the future,” he said.

Jan Vydra from Clyde-based Australian Fresh Herbs explained to the crowd how his company had gone ahead through innovative processes.

BY JARROD McALEESE SINGERS are invited to participate in the third and final audition for the 2016 Star Search for a Cause Competition, which raises funds for the Cancer Council’s Relay for Life.

The first two auditions ran on the 29 April and 1 May and Star Search for a Cause director Naomi Horsley encouraged performers of all ages to turn out to the final audition.

“We have had 40 people audition so far, mostly junior and intermediates. We are hoping to get more seniors and over 21s,” Ms Horsley said.

This year’s edition will be the eighth annual running of the event, which has raised more than $20,000 since its inception.

And the expansion of Star Search has led to the introduction of the

Cause We Care initiative, a wish granting service to be run in conjunction with the vocal competition.

“Previously all of our funds have gone to the Cancer Council but this year we’re going to share it, with funds also going to our wish granting service.

“We’re hoping to grant wishes to people who have cancer, whether it is someone who needs a break,

someone who needs a gardener or someone who needs a cleaner, if we can help, whether it’s an individual or a family, that’s what we want to do,” Ms Horsley said.

Todd has also been named one of the most influential men by Men’s Style and nominated for GQ’s ’Man of the Year’.

When he’s not hosting the ground-breaking documentary series, Redesign My Brain, which won the 2013 AACTAs for the Best Documentary of the Year, Todd is climbing mountains on a bike and tackling culture.

Away from work, Todd enjoys mountain climbing and has completed an unguided ascent to the summit of Mount Everest.

ANNE Atkin still keeps on forging new ground.

Ten years after pioneering a Painting with Parkinson’s class in Berwick and writing several books, Ms Atkin, 65, is poised for radical brain surgery to allay her illness’s paralysing effects.

Her books on the illness match her philosophy - that you have to have a life.

“You never, never know if you don’t have a go,” she says.

In June, Ms Atkin will take another giant step - being surgically wired with a neurotransmitter connected from her collarbone to the centre of her brain.

She describes it as like a heart pace-maker. Its pulses of electricity will help correct Ms Atkin’s muddied neural signals.

It’s a treatment not a longawaited cure, she stresses. It possibly means five years of less medication, less fatigue and freer movement.

It may be a temporary allayment of her regular frustration.

“Some days it’s like walking through deep mud. That’s what the air feels like,” she says.

“Your feet just stick to the floor.”

The accomplished artist jokes that she’s had to explore more abstract painting. Her painting-hand’s shakes don’t matter so much then, she says.

She speaks passionately of teaching up to 20 class members the basics of creating art

- colour, tone and composition.

But it’s all light-hearted on the ground.

“A lot of people say they can’t believe it’s a support group - it looks like a party.

“It’s nice to talk with someone who knows exactly how you feel.”

The class starts with a chat over cake, some brain exercises and then painting - all of which have therapeutic effects for a disease that marches on without a cure.

Members discover they can paint and also find a stillness to their trembling hands while they focus on a creative task.

Several members can testify to the benefits, yet the group runs without any government funding.

It says much for Ms Atkin’s drive that the concept has branched out to seven groups across Victoria.

With funding, she could extend the group to include Alzheimer’s patients - who also benefit from art classes.

Ms Atkin points out medical research into Parkinson’s is small compared to other neural disease.

“We still don’t know what causes it. There’s three groups of people where it’s most common - farmers, teachers and medical staff.

“It’s getting more common and people are getting younger (when diagnosed).

“Imagine someone in their late 40s with a mortgage, teen-

age children, no longer being able to work.

At 50, Ms Atkin slowly developed a hunch and lost movement in one arm. It was at that point an aunt advised she could have Parkinson’s - an affliction that Ms Atkin had never heard about.

She tried to carry on teaching for several months but was needing to sleep at lunchtime to take afternoon classes.

People’s symptoms include 33 non-motor ones, such as breathing difficulties, fatigue, excessive sweating, digestive problems and mental loss, and any of four motor symptoms tremor, rigidity, core balance and slowness of movement.

The only motor symptom Ms Atkin doesn’t have is a tremor - which made it difficult to diagnose at first.

Some doors of her life have closed, but others have opened such as founding Painting with Parkinson’s, writing books on the illness and having morning tea with a Governor-General.

“I love the group and I love doing what I do.”

Ms Atkin has a solo art exhibition booked for July. She will be then just putting the finishing touches on a book about her brain surgery.

Her next focus is to be granted one of City of Casey’s gallery spaces to display her group’s works.

“It’s a confident group.

These people are really good at what they’re doing.”

Casey Cobras pay tribute

By RUSSELL BENNETT THERE was barely a corner of the community that Pastor Don Cameron didn’t touch.

The Cornerstone Contact Centre co-ordinator died on 13 March following a six-week battle with aggressive cancer, and among the many community groups he served in a remarkable life was the Cranbourne-based Casey Cobras Football Club.

Just under a fortnight ago, the Cobras played a memorial match in honour of Don, with his wife Jo proudly watching on from the sidelines.

It was as though Don was doing the same from above, as the RecLink side dominated Collingwood 25.6(156) to 9.8(62).

Casey’s president - and its only ever coach - Gary Lambert was a great mate of Don’s, and described the win over Collingwood as one of the best in Cobras history. It’s a remarkable statement, given the team had only lost three games in three years leading up to its 2016 campaign.

After dropping a recent match by around 80 points, they stormed out of the blocks against Collingwood and were never headed after running through a banner dedicated to Don. “This would have been Don’s 13th season at the club,” Gary said.

“He became our president and for the past decade he’s been the secretary and even got out there, rolled his sleeves up and played quite a few games for us.

“For someone who’d never really played in his life, he wasn’t too bad a footy player!

“The community really respected him and the players definitely did.

“Even though Don was a religious man he never came down to try and preach his church to the players. He was just there whenever they needed him - even things like writing refer-

“Don meant a lot to me, just with the way he was in life. I’m not a church person or anything like that but I had so much respect for the way he carried himself.”

Many of the Cobras have done it tough, or still are. The RecLink competition is designed for socially disadvantaged people, such as those with problems with alcohol or substance

abuse, mental illness, or who’re homeless. Anyone can play - footy is just a great release.

But on the verge of the 2016 season, the Cobras - which were set up a little over 15 years ago in Doveton as the ‘Casey Kangaroos’ - are desperately on the lookout for more players and community support. The future of the club, which caters to the wider south-east, is still in jeopardy.

Make no mistake - this side is used

to winning, having won premiership, after premiership, after premiership but winning isn’t the be all and end all.

The love of the game, and mateship, is.

Gary knows that better than anyone.

With the prospect of an AFL umpiring career ahead of him, his life was turned upside down in a 1992 car crash.

“It pretty much took my whole life away from me - I went through serious depression and that type of stuff, but it (the club) has helped me in my own mental self,” he said.

“I’ve been here since day one and I’ve got a good relationship with a lot of these guys. They can ring me up at any time of night and they know that. If they’re struggling they can ring me and we’ll have a talk.”

Thousands of junior footballers in south-east Victoria embraced the armbands and battled hard to play strongwilled, but respectful football.

The round creates awareness of good role models, tolerance and sportsmanship among our state’s young athletes and their families and has been a fixture to circle on the junior footy calendar each year.

The league handed out over 400 medals across the round from the littlest legends in Under 8s all the way through to Premier 1 Under 17s - awarded by coaches to an opposition player who best represented the fairness and respect of the round.

Vic Metro are going off

By JARROD POTTER AFL YOUTH GIRLS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS - ROUND 2 BATTLING the two big Ws of the national championships - West Australia and the howling wind - Vic Metro all but confirmed its ticket to the MCG with a 44-point triumph.

Sandringham’s Trevor Barker Beach Oval copped its fair share of the storm-front buffeting Victoria this week - and play for the Victorians and Swans alike was not ideal.

The grandstand end held the key to victory as the winds gave every kick a solid boost.

When the wind favoured the Victorians, they cashed in and them some.

The first term was run on Vic Metro’s terms; from the first touch the likes of Deanna Berry, Isabel Huntington and Emily Browning set up forward entries aplenty.

Beaconsfield’s forward superstar Brooke Struylaart continued her brilliant start to life in the state ranks, giving West Australia’s full back Rachel Ashley nothing but headaches.

Struylaart bagged six goals - snagging them from all over the ground, including big grabs and ground-level efforts up the ground in the swirling Sandringham wind - to take her tally to 10 from the two matches.

But her work was set up by the gallant efforts of the midfield and especially the never-say-die defence.

Switching scenes, Vic Metro toiled in the back-end when the wind was smashing them head-on through Jordyn Allen, Tyla Hanks and Charis Ulu Peniata Such was the tenacious defence

“When it’s so windy like that and blowing 60-70kms it’s worth six or seven goals and you only get 30 minutes to kick with it then 30 minutes to defend your life,” Vic Metro coach Wayne Siekman said.

“We kicked with it early and their

intensity was high from the start, we might’ve only kicked one goal in the first five minutes, but we got on top and put the structures into place and gave us the good break that we needed.”

He praised the likes of Struylaart, Allen, Browning, the defensive performance of Tyla Hanks and Courtney Jones for her under-the-radar performance on the wing.

Siekman resorted to the age-old textbook answers when it came to thinking about Friday night though.

With two massive wins over West Australia and Queensland, the Metro girls are all but confirmed starters for the MCG curtain-raiser, but he was only looking towards Thursday’s clash against Vic Country.

“Mathematically, there’s still a possibility that we can miss - but two wins of 50 and 40 points our percentage is quite high and we’re pretty much there - that’s what these girls set out to do,” Siekman said.

“You can’t win a national championship without getting to the grand final and this year was the biggest reward yet to play on the MCG and the girls have nearly done that.”

On a brutal day battling the odds-on favourites and the howling gales, West Australia was well served by Sabreena Duffy, Emily McGuire and ruck Sonia Dorizzi.

Injuries may prove the biggest problem of the championships so far for Vic Metro with a few players sidelined from round one while Madison Prespakis going down with a leg injury in the last term.

The match against Vic Country has been relocated to Dandenong’s Shepley Oval and will be on from noon.

Casey sped out to an eightpoint lead by the end of the third quarter and never looked back. In the end Casey won by 15 points in a great display against the top team.

The Casey Cavaliers will host the biggest night on the club’s schedule on Saturday - the annual Ballin’ for Breast Cancer pink jersey night - when the senior men face Geelong, the women battle Melbourne University and the junior men face Chelsea. “it’s really important and it’s really grown,” Baird said. “This is the fourth one I’ve been involved in and it’ll be the third one with the pink jerseys, and the second one since Stevie’s mum (Debra Spinks) passed and she was one of the drivers of this.

“I think the whole club really gets behind it, everyone in the club has been impacted by breast cancer in some way or another so it’s a really important night for us and the boys really respect what it’s about, so they’ll be ready to go for sure.”

THE CASEY Cavaliers continued its good start to the season with an 84-52 win over Keysborough in the Division One men’s basketball competition.

The heated rivalry resumed as Keysborough hosted Casey for the first time in a couple of seasons.

There was no love lost in a foul-filled night down at Springers Leisure Centre, as the Casey Cavaliers endured the whistle getting blown over 50 times, but still did enough to guarantee the comfortable win.

The game started fiercely with Casey and Keysborough going shot for shot.

Matt Witherden led from the front for Casey with 30 points as his five three-pointers heaped the pressure onto Keysborough’s defence.

Witherden would’ve been thrilled to have Brent Hobba back in the line-up, for the first time since he injured his ankle in round 1, as the former NBL/SEABL champion scored 20 points and reeled in six rebounds.

By the end of the first quarter Casey had amassed a three point lead.

The second quarter showed the dominance the Casey Cavaliers possess. Their defence was impeccable as they restricted Keysborough to only 10 points for the term.

In the end Casey was too strong and kept Keysborough

to only eight points in the final term.

Some Cougars’ resistance was shown by Aaron Abram who scored 20 points and five rebounds, but by and large the Cavaliers were too strong in the end.

Guard Ben Louis chipped in with 13 points for Casey, but most importantly took on one of the difficult tasks in manning former SEABL team-mate Calvin Enge (six points).

It was all about solid defence for coach Stewart Baird after the win as his side continues it’s high-flying start to 2016.

“We’ve now gone half a game of good defence, three quarters of a game of good defence and last game we had a whole game of it,” Baird said.

“Really good contribution across the board, nice return from Hobbs (Hobba) and Witho (Witherden) got after it again and now he is causing me headaches cause I got to shuffle him back into the starting five and where does everyone fall it’s a nice problem to have.

“We set a goal at the start of the year and one of our goals was to be the best defensive team in the league and statistically we’ve been that for the last few weeks.”

In a tight battle the Casey Cavaliers women hosted the Mornington last Saturday and the third place Cavaliers played outstandingly in a 67-52 win to hand the Breakers its first loss of the season.

This one will be a ripper!

By DAVID NAGEL FOR players, coaches and supporters it’s the glorious uncertainty of sport at the highest level that makes it so attractive - and so we head to Edwin Flack Reserve on Saturday for the SEFNL grand final re-match between Berwick and Cranbourne.

Both teams learned a huge lesson in that premiership-decider from last year, with the number one lesson being if they lose concentration for 15 minutes they’re going to get burnt.

Berwick kicked six unanswered goals to take a 26-point lead, five minutes into the second term, before the Eagles responded with a magnificent 15-minute burst, kicking seven of their own.

The Wickers then hit back with ultimate reply, nine of the last 11 goals to take a five-goal victory and their first premiership in 16 years.

That’s the truly exciting thing here - both of these sides are capable of absolutely breathtaking displays of football if they’re allowed to run.

Cranbourne coach Simon Goosey is excited by the challenge but says the fall-out from last year’s grand final will play little part at all.

big game and we’re not going to play it down,” Goosey said.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for our players to get better at playing in big games, mentally more than anything else, so it’s important they embrace it and enjoy what’s ahead of them. Last year is done and dusted, we can’t change anything about that, and we’re a completely different side now.”

The Eagles have certainly added more pace, with Aaron Bower, Zac Roscoe and Dylan Cavalot injecting the leg-speed, while Shaun Marusic is a big-bodied midfielder with a CV to match.

“We’ve got seven changes from the grand final team from last year and Berwick has some new faces as well,” Goosey said.

“I know it sounds boring, but we just have to control what we can control and just follow the process.”

That process involves playing a particular brand of football, pressing hard, something that fell apart late in the big one last year.

“Take nothing away from Berwick, they were terrific, but it wasn’t them that stopped us from going away from our brand of football,” Goosey said after the match.

That’s the key here; both sides have proven they dominate the other -who can do it for longer?

Berwick coach Rhys Nisbet said his players know what to expect.

“The football is always quicker, harder and faster against Cranbourne and that’s the great challenge that our new and younger players will have to deal with this weekend,” Nisbet said.

“We can’t wait, the challenge is huge against a club that we have the ultimate respect for. They’re a great club Cranbourne, they’ve been at the top for a very long time and you just have to dip your lid and respect that.”

Nisbet said his Wickers were out to win, but remained focussed on the bigger picture ahead.

“We go out to win every game of footy we play in, especially these big ones” Nisbet said.

“The result will have a big influence on where we finish, there’s no doubt about that, but we just want to finish top three which gives you a better shot come finals time.”

Without doubt these are the two most talentladen sides in the competition.

Berwick has class on every line, with Ash Smith and Michael Riseley leading the defence, Madi Andrews, Michael Harold and Jake Wilson taking control through the midfield, while Ben Kearns and Mark Weekes need only a slither of opportunity to make you pay.

Standing behind the Berwick goals you get to appreciate how hard this forward line is to stop it’s organised chaos.

But Cranbourne has some serious silk of its own. Champion full-forward Marc Holt lives for the big stage, while Luke Bee-Hugo, Ryan Jones, Zac Roscoe and Michael Theodoridis only need half-a-dozen touches to be effective.

But it’s the work those forwards do without the ball that will play the biggest role in the match.

The Wickers run-and-carry out of defence has become their trademark, so Cranbourne needs to pressure, pressure, pressure, to limit that impact.

This is going to be one out of the box - it’s Cranbourne by three points.

Magpies clinch the nail-biter

By DAVID NAGEL THEY say that when the going gets tough, the tough get going - well Narre Warren had to draw on all of its championship winning qualities to hold off a brave Tooradin at Fox Road on Saturday.

The Magpies prevailed by a goal, 4443, but that only tells part of the story.

The Magpies, seriously depleted at the moment, kicked out to a 10-goal lead in the third quarter on the back of a hot-streak, a seven-goal run that looked to have stopped the Seagulls in their tracks.

But the Seagulls, under Kelly Haynes, are made of sterner stuff and fought back to make it a goal-for-goal run to the wire.

The crucial moment came with an Adele Clydesdale intercept, resulting in a goal, with the Magpies regaining possession with the centre pass.

It was a fine line - the Magpies came oh so close to their first loss of the season.

“We’ve got our challenges at the moment and Tooradin is playing great netball, and we knew their style would challenge us,” said Magpies’ coach Greg Heinrich.

“Tooradin is definitely a big contender, Kelly (Haynes) has really got them firing and they’re playing some great netball at the moment.”

Despite the loss the Seagulls gained a lot of respect and, more importantly, belief from the close shave and will benefit greatly on all counts. Haynes, Jess Maher and Emma Iacovou lived up their big-game reputations for the Seagulls on the weekend.

Cranbourne has opened its account with a hard-fought 29-27 victory over ROC at Casey Fields.

In the end it was left to the steadying hands of Natalie Sparks (GA) and Alanah Hardy (GS) to get the Eagles across the line. The move of Sharni Lambden to defence, allowed Donna Wilson to move Hardy away from her regular position at goal defence, giving the Eagles a different look.

Lambden (GD) and Tara Cecil (GK) proved a tough-nut to crack for the Kangas, who had Tess Young (GK) and Laura Quinn (GD) in fine form at the opposite end of the court.

A brilliant second half performance from Beaconsfield goaler Andi Dickson has propelled the Eagles to their best win of the season, a 41-31 victory over Doveton at Robinson Reserve.

Scores were locked at 18-all at half time, before Dickson scored 18 of the Eagles’ 23 second-half goals to be the most influential player on the court.

Cara Humbert, who was moved into the midcourt to try and give the Doves some drive in the final term, was joined by Liz Edwards and Aggie Seeto as solid fourquarter contributors.

Hampton Park’s suffocating team defence has kept Berwick to a losing score in the Redbacks’ 44-30 triumph at Robert Booth Reserve.

The Redbacks were unbelievably miserly in the second and third quarters, allowing the Wickers just 11 goals through the middle stages of the match. It would be easy to heap praise on the defensive efforts of Karli Foster (GD) and Rania Waller (GK), but their tasks were made easy through the efforts of Monalisa Groom, Maddi Hanlen and Natu Fahnana through the midcourt. The Wickers have been competitive but are still striving for that elusive win.

Stingrays in smashing win

By JARROD POTTER TAC CUP - ROUND 6 REVIEW UNDETERRED by the conditions, Dandenong smashed through the Western Jets and sent Mother Nature back to the drawing board.

Not even driving rain and ferocious galeforce winds could stop the Stingrays racking up a 54-point triumph against the lacklustre Western Jets.

Sunday storms lashed the state and made life at Burbank Oval, Williamstown, particularly treacherous.

Seemingly those natural obstacles proved more challenging for Dandenong to overcome than its actual opponent as the Western Jets could hardly muster any forward momentum.

Even with the wind at their back, the Jets failed to fire as the Stingrays’ back six held them to a scant two-goal-six effort across the day.

It was a day for the in-and-under types as Dandenong’s smalls sent the Jets scrambling in defence as well.

Danny Hughes, Danny Allsop and Tom Jok (two goals apiece) were the best of the goalkickers while the 18-behind score line was more indicative of the conditions than Dandenong’s attempts to kick around or against the wind.

While a three-goal-nine third term wasn’t an ideal outcome, the Stingrays surged against the wind to outscore the Jets down the stretch and take the emphatic 9.18 (72) to 2.6 (18) triumph.

“It was pretty trying conditions,” Stingrays coach Craig Black said. “Really happy to just get away with the win - but to win by so much was really pleasing.

“Said to the boys at the start of the game, there were always going to be mistakes made, but as

Cranny’s second quarter blues St John’s victory is a happy home-coming demolition

By JARROD POTTER VFL WOMEN’S - ROUND 4 ONE half down, one half to go.

The signs are tantalising for Cranbourne Women’s Football Club as it produced it’s best half of football yet this season to send shudders down the spine of the VFL Women’s elite sides.

The promoted Eagles gave last year’s grand finalists Diamond Creek an almighty scare, as they charged ahead in the second term to bank a 18-point lead at the main break.

Kirsten McLeod (two goals) and Bianca Jakobsson had ripped holes in the Creekers’ defence, leaving the Eagles with a great confidence booster heading into the second half.

Cranbourne’s goal-kicking proved costly though, as two-goals-seven through the second term could’ve swung the match in their favour ... especially with what the Creekers brought back out of the rooms.

It went pear-shaped after the main break though as Cranbourne struggled and only kicked two more behinds through the third and fourth as it couldn’t stitch together another strong showing down the straight.

Diamond Creek had the experienced legs necessary to run out the clash and avoid the embarrassing loss, ending up 46 points ahead by the final siren.

Cranbourne coach Kris Smith lamented the second quarter blues as the Eagles’ goalkicking cost them dearly.

“Two seven in the second quarter and we legitimately kicked two seven,” Smith said. “I can’t blame these girls - it’s not their fault - but if we kicked seven-goals-two and scoreboard pressure was a little bit different, who knows what the second half could’ve been.”

“It was like I was coaching a different group this week,” Smith said.

“I don’t know what it was, but we turned a bit of a corner and realised we can match it with these guys.

“We got a bit of confidence out of the Melbourne Uni game - although they did us on the scoreboard, anyone who was at that game would say that wasn’t how that game was played.

“I think they realised that day we can match it with them if we come out switched on from the start and put in a four-quarter effort.

“If we had been accurate in front of goals and converted our shots it could’ve been a different story at three-quarter-time.”

Eighth placed Cranbourne can now breathe a big sigh of relief as it gets a bit of a reprieve from battling the top brass.

The better times are near starting with it’s VWFL Division 1 grand final rematch against Knox at Casey Fields from 2pm on Sunday.

IN THE first significant skirmish for the VAFA Division 2 crown, St John’s brushed aside premiership threat Preston in a 32-point demolition.

Taking to Carroll Reserve for the first time in 2016, St John’s made sure it was a happy home-coming as the goals started piling up from the first bounce and finished the game 17.8(110) to 11.12(78).

With a healthy wind at their backs, the JOCs punished the Bullants early, rocketing away to a five-goal lead at the first change.

Aaron Thornton (eight goals) was the main beneficiary of the relentless St John’s clearance work, as the full forward continued his VAFA rampage to take the lead in the league’s goal kicking with 20 already off only four outings.

Around the five-goal mark was where the margin would stay all day as St John’s had answers for every question Preston could conjure. Backmen Dylan Webb and Liam O’Connor held down the visitors through the main moments of the match, while the run-and-carry off the smalls also impressed.

In-and-under as well as outside hardrunning types flourished for the JOCs on Saturday as Bahaa Koweiss, Daniel Abou-Karroum, Matthew Nicholson and Gary Roberts flew the flag and then some.

Things got heated through the third term as harsh words and a few jumper punches from both sides were thrown, but when the dust settled, Preston had no answers on the scoreboard to what St John’s was laying down. Four goals against the wind sealed the deal and the win gives St John’s the outright lead in VAFA Division 2 as the only undefeated side in the competition heading into round five.

“It’s good because you want to make a statement early on in the year,” St John’s assistant coach Anthony Brannan said.

“They’re probably the benchmark in our competition and to knock them off at

home is a really good result.

“We don’t like to lose at home and it’s a good start for us here from our first home game.”

Brannan thought the defensive end help up under great pressure from the Bullants, the young midfielders continued to improve while Thornton’s pedigree speaks for itself.

“The midfield - we’ve got the young boys in there this year, Glenn Costas is our captain, Corey Ladson and Corey Ely - they’re 23 now so they need to start standing up,” Brannan said. “Nick Terrill has come to the club and been really committed as well.”

They’ll set their sights on Emmaus St Leos away this weekend with the winning streak well in mind for the JOCs. “They’ve got a couple of good players and were undefeated until the grand final, so we think they’re a good side,” Brannan said. “Saw them first hand in a praccy match last year and they’re very slick.

“It will be another big game for us and we’re three-and-zip now so it will be four-and-zip next week.”

IN SFL results, Hallam remains undefeated with its fourth win on the trot knocking over South Yarra in a 13.6(84) to 7.11(53) victory. Shane Thomas (four goals) snagged a little bag while the side continued to be well served in the midfield by Jayden Bubb (two goals), Manny Peresso (two goals) and Matt Neve.

Lyndale - led by Trevor Kumetaitis (five goals) - was too much for Endeavour Hills in a 16.11(107) to 12.14(86) victory.

Daniel Wilson and Alex Kerr were sublime for the Pumas while Shaun Richards (two goals), Daniel Morrison (three goals) and Shane Peake (three goals) also featured in the best.

Doveton Eagles were beaten by the best, downed by 60 points against ladder leading Mount Waverley. Jarrod O’Neill, Kaine Bundy and Darren Ramsdale (four goals) were the Eagles’ finest.

For most of this boom period Outback has been a consistent but unspectacular sales performer which, despite Subaru’s clever mechanical engineering, was overlooked for taller, more stylish and cheaper competitors.

All that changed with the arrival of the latest, fifth-generation, model in December 2014.

Price cuts of between $2000 and $10,000 were the hook that got potential buyers into the Subaru showrooms where they were presented with a significantly improved vehicle in terms of size, styling and interior quality The impact was immediate and spectacular with sales increasing by more than 400 per cent over the previous (admittedly poor) year to just under 11,000 sales.

The year was then capped off with the Outback 2.5i Premium taking out the Best AWD SUV under $50,000 category in the 2015 Australia’s Best Cars Awards; although it did so by tipping out its Forester stablemate.

Despite some minor price increases a February 2016 upgrade has accelerated sales even further with a number of new

safety and convenience features including an upgraded version of the Subaru EyeSight system and a new Vision Assist feature in all but the entry-level model.

Engine size identifies the five Outback variants: 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.0D, 2.0D Premium and 3.6R. Outback comes with the choice of three horizontallyopposed engines - a 2.5-litre four-cylinder and 3.6-litre sixcylinder petrol, and a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged diesel. Power and torque peaks are 129 kW and 235 Nm (2.5i); 191 kW and 350 Nm (3.6R); and 110 kW and 350 Nm (2.0D).

Top torque comes in at 4000 rpm, 4400 rpm and 1800-2800 rpm respectively.

All models come with continuously variable transmission with a seven-ratio manual override available via steering wheel mounted paddle-shifters.

The 2.0D and 2.0D Premier diesel models get the option of six-speed manual.

Although Outback doesn’t have the extra height of the typical SUV there’s plenty of headroom, even with a sunroof, and the interior is spacious and comfortable with room for five adults.

The Thunderbolt 750 MSL is a heavy duty cross country and light weight trail bike; the 27.5-inch wheel chassis is super manoeuvrable and agile, it also loves popping of obstacles and is ready to choose a diicult line choose, without being unforgiving. The Thunderbolt allows you to push your limits when it comes to technically demanding terrain, without losing that sense of eiciency when all you’re concerned about is eating up the kilometres.

Frame Details: The quality of the Thunderbolt carbon frame is evident, not only the exterior, but the interior of the frame inish. There is a beautiful 3K carbon weave holding the chassis together; which not only gives it excellent impact resistance but also stifness for brilliant power transfer and control. The Thunderbolt’s 750 MSL superlative frame inish is achieved through the use their Smoothwall carbon technology to create a chassis that is free of wrinkles and voids in the carbon ibre matrix.

Chassis stifness is crucial and there are two diferent torsional stifness values that need to be address; bottom bracket and torsional. The former improves pedalling eiciency and latter improves control and steering. Using Pipelock Collet, just above the bottom bracket, the 750 MSL has an extremely wide Q-Factor or stance; a noticeable feature compared with many other dual suspension mountain bikes. Many brands use a bearing in this area which is tightened to provide lateral stifness. Through experience, bottom bracket lex is still noticeable, particularly when grinding up steep climbs and over obstacles. The Collet expands radially, and is military grade and hard-anodised. The Pipelock pivots have built in grease ports for easy maintenance.

The Thunderbolt 750 MSL also uses a carbon ibre rear triangle. This is deinitely a good thing. The carbon rear triangle drastically increases the chassis’ torsional stifness. The carbon rear triangle prevents the frame twisting and lexing under hard cornering; it helps to the keep the bike on line, allowing you to push harder and faster through the corners and rock gardens.

Component Details:

New for 2016 is the Fox FIT4 damper circuit. FIT4 (4th Generation FIT damper) uses a revised air spring that has self-equalising positive and negative air chambers.

This creates a smoother initial and return stroke. Also for 2016, Fox have eliminated their Open Bath Cartridge (Evolution Series) models. Drivetrain components are Shimano SLX and Deore XT. The Race Face Afect crank uses new Cinch chain rings.

Ride 9: The mechanical soul of any Rocky Mountain Thunderbolt is Ride 9. Using a mechanical chip, this feature allows riders to adjust the feel of the Thunderbolt in 9 diferent ways; depending on the rider and conditions.

The 4 compass points of Ride 9 are up, back, forward and down; these correlate to lighter riders, most eiciency, most aggressive and heavy riders, respectively.
