Mr Bakens said the savings were just one aspect of the benefits of using LED lights at the football ground.

“One of the great things about the LED lights is you can dim them, unlike the metal halogens,” he said.

“Previously, you would need to turn some of the metal halogen lights off and that has an effect on the uniformity of the light around the ground, with LED you can dim them and it’s a uniform light around the ground.”

AFL Victoria provided some funding to this project as they are interested to see how the LED lights work for South Belgrave.

“AFL Victoria is interested to see a full oval lit with this technology and provide a case study on the operational savings that it should generate for the club,” AFL Victoria chief operating officer, Rick Bell said.

SOUTH Belgrave Football Club is taking a bold step in AFL infrastructure and becoming one of the first clubs in the state to use LED floodlights at their oval.

The new lights have been made possible through a funding collaboration between the club, Yarra Ranges Council, AFL Victoria and Federal MP Jason Wood.

“It’s going to be very beneficial for the club, and we will get a return on our investment in a handful of years,” Ian Bakens, co-ordinator of South Belgrave’s community and precinct development said.

“The benefits will be soon felt and wonderful over the long term.”

The council is responsible for replacing the lights at local sports ovals when needed, and it is the responsibility of the sports club to maintain the lighting.

The move to LED lights at South Belgrave will mean maintenance costs for the club will be drastically reduced.

“Over next 25 years we will save over $150,000 and that’s massive,” Mr Bakens said.

Lyster Ward Councillor Mike Clare said LED lights for South Belgrave would lead to big changes to sports grounds everywhere.

“We’re doing unique for Australia and for Belgrave South Football ground,” he said.

“It’s going to be match standard lighting so they can host AFL standard matches.

“It’s a real breakthrough, and they are going to be the first ground in Australia with high powered LED lighting.”

While the installation of the LED lights is more expensive than that current metal halogen lights, the savings to both council and the club will make a big difference in the long term.

“The current lights last two to three years but the LEDs last about 80,000 hours, which is about

Rain no bar to race MOTHER Nature couldn’t stop the nearly 3000 runners who turned out to see whether they could beat Puffing Billy in a race through the Dandenong Ranges on Sunday 1 May. The 35th Puffing Billy Great Train Race, over a distance of 13.5km, proved to be another challenge this year.

Local resident Craig Appleby from Cockatoo crossed the line to win the event in 43.39s.

Appleby won the race in 2014 and came second last year.

He said he was keen to taste victory again.

“I really enjoyed competing in the Great Train Race and appreciated the support from the local community for this event,” he said.

“I will continue to run in the Great Train Race until I can no longer run.”

The first female to cross the line was Tarli Bird from Echuca who finished in 49.04s.

This is the second year running she has been the female winner.

Meanwhile, Puffing Billy crossed the line in 56.20s, which was almost five minutes slower than last year.

The slower time was possibly due to the wet weather conditions.

Through the event, the Puffing Billy Preservation Society successfully raised around $95,000.

The funds will go towards completing the museum at Menzies Creek.

SES faces up to wind

By JESSE GRAHAM IT WAS a busy weekend for Emerald SES, with strong winds knocking trees down and taking down power lines in the hills.

Emerald SES controller Ben Owen said the unit was called out at 3.45am for its first request for assistance on Sunday 1 May, with about three crews

on the road all day, helping to clear storm damage.

Mr Owen said that trees came down over power lines, roads and driveways during the storm, with the unit receiving more than 40 call-outs over the day.

“Most of our requests for assistance were for trees down - trees down on power lines or on roads,” he said.

“We were lucky this time - we had a very mild amount of building damage.”

He said that power remains out in areas, including Cockatoo’s main street, and that the unit was preparing for more strong winds on Tuesday 3 May. “The complex thing about tomorrow (Tuesday) is with our volunteer

work team, most people are back at work,” he said.

“Sunday was ideal, in some context, because some people were home and able to respond.”

Mr Owen said the SES experienced two to three large storms in the year, and that the year had been largely quiet before the storm hit overnight on Saturday.

Dragged under car downhill

By JESSE GRAHAM A FERNTREE Gully man was airlifted to hospital on the weekend after being caught under an out-ofcontrol car on a rural property in Cockatoo.

At 4.45pm on Sunday 1 May, the 30-year-old man was helping a friend at the Cockatoo property to tow a bogged car on a steep hill, when the towing rope snapped.

Emerald police Senior Constable Craig Harvey said the car slid down the hill, which was about 100 metres long, and the man tried to climb out of the car.

“He got caught in the car door, went under the car, got dragged down the bottom and came to rest in thick bushland at the bottom of the hill,” he said.

Emerald police, SES and paramedics were joined by CFA crews from Cockatoo, Pakenham and Monbulk, as well as Dandenong’s high angle rescue team, to rescue the man.

“He had to be carried out by hand,” Sen Const Harvey said.

Emerald SES controller Ben Owen said the man was carried by emergency services crews to a waiting helicopter, and he was flown to The Alfred hospital.

Sen Const Harvey said the man had non-life threatening injuries, but was suspected to have a punctured lung.

A BELGRAVE woman had an early morning fright on Monday 2 May, after waking to find a thief in her bedroom, scaring them off.

Belgrave Police Sergeant Mick Hall said that at 4.20am, a 45-yearold woman woke to find a thief in her room, stealing jewellery and other items.

Sgt Hall said the woman screamed, and the thief, believed to be a man, threw an item at the woman before fleeing - leaving behind his bag and the items he was trying to steal.

He said the man was believed to have entered through an unlocked door, and ran out of the front door before driving away.

“A suspect has been nominated,” Sgt Hall said.

“We are looking for anyone who heard something.”

POLICE are seeking the help of the public to recover a stolen Subaru wagon, which was taken from a Silvan property over the weekend.

On Saturday 30 April, a house in Queens Road, Silvan, was broken into, where keys for a white Subaru wagon were stolen - as well as the car they belonged to.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Melanie Woods said the thief might have been disturbed, but the car appears to have been targeted by the thief.

POLICE are calling on witnesses to come forward, after tools were stolen from a construction site in Olinda over the Anzac Day long weekend.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Melanie Woods said that between Friday 24 and Tuesday 26 April, the construction site, at Garden City on Olinda-Monbulk Road, was broken into.

An air compressor and tools worth about $2000 were stolen from the site, where tools were stored in a shipping container.

Honouring all Anzacs desk Tony Smith MP

OVER the past fortnight, our community has come together to remember, reflect and revere the Anzacs of the First World War, and all who have followed proudly in their footsteps in Australia’s subsequent conflicts.

We did so at special school Anzac services, at community pre-Anzac Day services, and in huge numbers on Anzac Day itself where we looked back a century.

Later in the year, we will have the chance to focus on the feats of the Vietnam veterans half a century ago.

Vietnam Veterans Day on 18 August will mark 50 years since the battle of Long Tan. While the Vietnam conflict lasted many years, the battle of Long Tan epitomised the character and courage of those serving our nation.

In a rubber plantation about 5km east of the Nui Dat base, Australian soldiers of D Company 6RAR struck a large company of Vietcong while on a patrol of the area.

In heavy rain, just over 100 Australian soldiers turned away more than 2500 Vietcong, all the time risking being overrun and running out of ammunition.

It is a battle worthy of pride of place

in Australian history, a battle which embodied the guts and determination of the original Diggers.

They fought against the odds in a country and terrain unfamiliar to them.

In all the battles of the Vietnam War, our Diggers expected to face the fury of their foes.

But what they didn’t expect to face was condemnation from large numbers of fellow Australians on their return home.

It wasn’t just the abuse they received from some that hurt.

The quiet indifference of many other Australians to their service cut deep as well.

Those who served in Vietnam were the first generation of Australian servicemen not to receive the grateful thanks of our nation.

Yes, it was an unpopular war, but it does not matter whether the conflict is one of consensus or controversy.

The decision to enter into combat was not made by them, but by the government of the day.

Fifty years on we must resolve never to treat returned service men and women in that way again.

In August, it will be a time to again say thank you and it will also be a wonderful opportunity to tell their individual stories of service.

On Anzac Day, I was pleased to announce a grant to the Mount Evelyn RSL to produce a book on Vietnam Veterans of the Yarra Valley, which will allow our local community to do just that.

Condemned to rebuild

By JESSE GRAHAM YARRA Ranges Council may have a new, fully-refurbished $28 million office by 2020, with councillors endorsing the first stages of a “complete redevelopment” at a recent meeting.

On Tuesday 26 April, Yarra Ranges councillors voted to endorse a complete redevelopment of the council’s Anderson Street offices, which are currently in a state of disrepair.

The councillors also voted to approve funding and borrowing to undertake the complete redevelopment, which would see the offices completely refurbished, with another two-level building constructed and old portable buildings removed.

In a media tour of the council offices before the council meeting, project director Scott Hodges showed examples of the building in a state of disrepair, with water damage, out-dated systems and asbestos sheeting - which, after termite damage in recent years, saved CEO Glenn Patterson from falling through the floor of his office.

“You have a three-stage sub-floor, which is one, two, then your timber floorboards, then asbestos tiles on top - all of that had been eaten below,” Mr Hodges said.

“Luckily, that gave the integrity that he didn’t fall through his floor.”

He said the office buildings did not have safety switches, or temperature control from hot water taps, meaning employees were at risk of electrocution or scalding, and that steel beams supporting the structure had not been fire-protected.

“If they melt, the whole house of cards falls down,” he said.

The problem that the council faces is that a single repair triggers a domino-effect of urgent works across the whole building.

“We don’t have safety switches, we can’t add to our boards - they are out of date, they have asbestos, they have insufficient capacity to support any upgrade,” he said.

“Therefore, if you replace the electrics, or if you’re trying to replace the air-conditioning which is well past its use-by date - you would need to upgrade your electrical boards.

Mr Hodges said that council was required to make their buildings compliant, and that the minimum cost of getting the current building up to scratch was $6.5 million - before GST. But Yarra Ranges mayor Jason Callanan said that would be a “band-aid” solution, with the cost of the full $28 million rebuild to be faced by council again in coming years.

A feasibility study was green-lit by council in August last year, with an estimated cost of $420,000 - the final document cost council $117,000, with the remainder of the money to be used on the rest of the project.

Mr Hodges said that, if approved, the council aimed to have the project finished by 2020, moving staff around as the building was gutted and refurbished in stages.

Addressing concerns about the cost of the refurbishment, Mr Hodges said the works would be “modest and humble,” and the resulting building

would last for the coming 60 years.

“It’s never going to be a good time to bring this up, ever ... we’re just going to have to bite the bullet,” Cr Callanan said.

At the meeting, Cr Callanan moved an alternate recommendation, which will see the feasibility study released to the public on the council’s website, and at its offices and community link offices.

Reports will be presented to the council for town planning in early 2017, with the project set to go to tender in late 2017.

One of the pitfalls of driving

By JESSE GRAHAM IF YOU think you’re having a bad day, spare a thought for this poor driver, who flipped their ute in Emerald on Tuesday morning 26 April.

Mail photographer Greg Carrick spotted the flipped car on Beaconsfield-Emerald Road.

He said the vehicle pulled off of the road, dropped a wheel into a drainage pit, and flipped at low speed.

Mr Carrick said the driver received a minor head injury in the crash, but insisted he was fine.

“This was just a bad day,” the driver said.

IT AFFECTS us all.

A bipartisan Senate Inquiry report into marine plastic pollution was released on Wednesday, 20 April.

This is relevant to all Australians (including Dandenong Ranges residents) because the Senate Inquiry confirmed it is a very serious situation including a ‘looming health crisis’ from contamination of seafood.

Australians for Refunds on Cans and Bottles (based in Clematis) welcomes the senate committee's call for all states to have container deposit schemes by 2020; banning plastic bags and an immediate ban on microbeads.

This report is a wake-up call for the Victorian Government.

It can either do nothing, which will please the big drink companies, or it can help fix this problem and give Victoria a container deposit system.

Well, we tried EMERALD residents may recall that some five years ago, a petition signed by about 400 people was presented to Cardinia Shire Council, calling for additional retirement facilities in Emerald.

This need had been identified in the Cardinia Council’s ward plan for Emerald, which had been eventually finalised to general community satisfaction.

A site, very close to the township, was put forward and negotiations between the shire’s planning section and local developers commenced.

Needless to say, complications, objections and constant changes to the original concept mostly originated by our local public servants caused delay after delay.

Plans had to be constantly re-drawn and other changes all meant extra time and money.

Despite this, the developers persisted and, one gathers, a final design was approved by council.

Because of green belt and other regulatory factors, the project was then put before the State Government for approval.

The Minister for Planning, Richard Wynne MP, has, one hears, vetoed the project on account of the bushfire prone nature of the area.

End of story?

One gathers the developers have given up on the five-year battle on our behalf and who could blame them?

To those residents who signed the petition, to the community groups and local traders who helped to distribute it, one can only say, well, we tried.

But in the end, as is often the case, our elected representatives and the bureaucrats managed to stuff it up as usual.

One for the mothers MOTHERS’ Day is typically a day when mothers are treated with love and respect but, sadly, not all mums.

Mother pigs in body-hugging metal crates are forced to churn out litter after litter, yet never permitted to touch or nurture their babies.

Dairy cow mothers are forced to give birth each year, only to have their beloved babies torn from their side and killed within days of birth.

Chicken mothers aren’t even permitted to see their beautiful babies, which is, perhaps, just as well.

How would they feel seeing their adorable boy chicks minced up alive, their girls having their tiny beaks agonisingly severed with red hot blades and those raised for meat crippled and in pain when only weeks old?

Isn’t it time for all mothers to take a stand against this heartless and unjustifiable abuse of their non-human counterparts?

Ending this cruel exploitation is as easy as refusing to support these ruthless industries with our consumer dollars.

Exhibition stage for historic hotel redevelopment

By PETER DOUGLAS THE Burnham Beeches redevelopment has now reached exhibition stage, thanks largely to developers scrapping plans for 80 villas to be constructed on the site.

At Yarra Ranges Council’s meeting on Tuesday 26 April, council passed a revised planning scheme amendment, which will enable celebrity chef Shannon Bennett and co-developer Adam Garrison the chance to reach stage two of their redevelopment plans.

This includes the refurbishment of the much-loved, historic mansion.

The redevelopment has come under close scrutiny from various community groups and nearby residents, most notably over the original proposal which included building villas.

The villas were to be sold as investment properties to raise funds for the overall development.

However, council unanimously rejected that proposal in August last year.

In supporting the revised proposal, Mr Garrison said he and Mr Bennett wanted to see the project flourish.

“We’ve worked very hard to try and rejig our proposal,” he said.

“As you’d be aware, the property has been vacant and derelict for over 25 years ... it will not work to renovate the building as a hotel unless there are other activities.

“One cafe cannot support the operation.”

Co-developer Mr Bennett acknowledged there were issues to be addressed during the exhibition stage.

“With such an exciting development, there’s always going to be issues, we’re here to work through it,” he said.

“It’s an exciting development to come because there’s nothing like this in Victoria.

He acknowledged parking was a main concern.

“We’ve got problems with parking ... a lot of it’s attributed to the fact there’s a million and a quarter people visiting the (neighbouring) Alfred Nicholas (Memorial) Gardens each year.

“We’ve got to work through that ... there’s more information to come and we will continue to workshop.”

Indeed, it appears there is much to work through, with numerous objectors still unsatisfied.

Speaking on behalf of various groups, including the Save the Dandenongs League, Betty Marsden said much work lay ahead.

“We think this is a better application than the last one, we do feel it’s a better development,” she said.

“We’re not happy with the removal of caps on number of patrons ... we feel that it’s too open-ended.

“We haven’t had information about the traffic, there are numerous things (to which) we don’t know the answer.

“Parking out in Sherbrooke Road, it’s been absolute chaos there on a few occasions.”

Group secretary Kathryn Nauta said the potential impact on locals was huge.

“There are concerns about possible traffic gridlock in Sherbrooke Road, as well as fire safety issues and many other questions,” she said.

“There’s broad support for the visionary makeover of the site, but if the developers are genuine about preserving its history and heritage, and taking local people forward with them, then they need to start talking to us.”

Meanwhile, Cr Noel Cliff said the exhibition stage now presented the chance to get this redevelopment moving in the right direction.

“If we do not do something about it, one day we’re going to be told it’s gone

too far and it’s got to be bulldozed,” he said.

“We are not approving tonight ... we’re not giving any permits tonight ... it’s going up for exhibition.

“We can start to assess what the problems are with parking, which are gigantic ... there are issues, whether they’re tied to Burnham Beeches, or tied to next door, or a combination ... it’s a chance to hear from the residents.”

This sentiment won support from Cr Len Cox, who said the present proposal was streets ahead in terms of previous proposals.

“I can remember at least four developers previous to the current owners and they (their proposals) weren’t acceptable,” he said.

War history display funds DANDENONG Ranges residents will soon have another space in which they can show their support for Australia’s veterans. A wartime memorabilia display is set for construction after Dandenong Ranges RSL received $2940 to help commemorate the sacrifice of veterans. Monbulk MP James Merlino was on hand to make the announcement on Friday, 22 May. Mr Merlino said Australia’s servicemen and women deserved what would be a fitting tribute. “The Monbulk electorate has a proud wartime history and it’s important we give our veterans that did us proud the fitting support and tribute they deserve,” he said.

Students all honour a Rat

By PETER DOUGLAS BELGRAVE Heights Christian School honoured the Anzacs on Wednesday, 27 April, through a special visit from Rat of Tobruk, Jack Caple.

The Rats of Tobruk nickname was bestowed on soldiers who fought in the siege of Tobruk during World War II. Mr Caple is the great-grandfather of a student at the school, Emily Chudasko, who is this year in Prep.

For the special occasion, about 850 attended the whole-school event, which included students,

teachers, parents and community members.

Mr Caple spoke to the guests about his experiences in the war, as well as bringing in some mementoes such as his helmet, water canteen and food container.

Principal Andy Callow said he was delighted with how many students wanted to meet Mr Caple after the service and thank him for attending.

Service organiser Mrs Joy McGrath ensured the service was dignified, succinct and moving, with her efforts earning special praise from the school.

Kids and cops the winner

By JESSE GRAHAM AND VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS EDUCATION has come out as the big winner in the new state budget.

The 2016-17 budget outlined a $13.3 million investment in the region’s schools and an undisclosed amount of cash for a new technical school at the closed Swinburne Lilydale campus.

The continued development and upgrades to Emerald Secondary College will see another $1.2 million invested in the school over 2016-17 financial year.

Monbulk College will also see existing upgrades continue to the coming fiscal year with another $1.2 million invested in the school.

The Basin Primary School will also have buildings modernised and new facilities added to accommodate The Basin Community House.

The primary school will receive $55,000 over 2016-17 and a further $1.5 million until the expected finish of the project in 2018-19.

In the Yarra Valley, $1.7 million in funding will go towards works at the Yarra Junction Primary School following a pre-election announcement by Labor of $2 million.

Sewer growth in Sherbrooke will receive $3 million, delivering much needed waste management services to properties in the Dandenongs.

Mr Pallas said that extra housing, more family counselling services and prevention efforts would give women and children fleeing abusive relationships more options.

“While these and other measures in the package will support current victims of family violence, our ultimate task is to stop it from happening in the first place,” he said.

Small businesses will pay less tax, with the government increasing the payroll tax threshold from $550,000 to $650,000 over the coming four years.

Level crossing removals will continue, with $636 million allocated over the coming financial year, though a timeline has yet to be announced for the Lilydale level crossing removal.

The 1984 film showcases Prince in the lead role of the story of a young rock musician known as ‘The Kid’ as he uses his music to escape from his troublesome family life.

The Kid spends all his time performing at the First Avenue nightclub with his band, The Revolution but when hell breaks loose both at the club and at home, The Kid discovers his only refuge is in music.

It is through this escapism that The Kid becomes inspired to write the film’s famous title song, ‘Purple Rain.’

The Cameo Theatre will bring Prince to the silver screen on Friday 6 May in a special screening for fans of the late musician to party like it’s 1999.

Bowling club awards night LAST week, Monbulk Bowling Club held its annual presentation night.

Members and friends enjoyed a very delicious dinner in the bistro.

They then acknowledged the winners of the club championships and the successful bowling side that played in the Saturday Division 7 competition.

Monbulk had six sides in the metropolitan pennant competitions this season.

Five of them reached the finals, which was a great result, though only one side came away with a grand final pennant.

Victorian Deputy Premier, James Merlino, was on hand to

present medals to the Pennant winners and to also present the club with a new Victorian flag.

Mr Merlino spoke briefly about his high regard for the Monbulk area.

Meanwhile, Casey MP Tony Smith also visited the club recently.

Mr Smith was responding to a request from the club for a new Australian flag.

And he didn’t let the club down.

Mr Smith spoke briefly to the crowd of more than 60 bowlers about his previous visits to the bowling club.

He promised to come more often in the future.

With a new flag, the club will look fresher and brighter than ever for the coming season.

THERE is a strong, positive vibe around the Belgrave Junior Football Club.

In 2015, the Belgrave Junior Football Club only had one team competing, the under 10s.

They were a young group and worked hard all year to represent the club.

This year Belgrave has recruited well and managed three teams; due to the hard work and dedication from the players, coaches, parents and committee.

The club has an under 10s

team coached by Mick McGuinness (last year’s coach), Under 12s coached by Glenn Underwood and they proudly have their first-ever girls team, coached by Andy McGuinness.

The club has pushed hard to get a girls' team because they want to empower girls in the community and help develop self-esteem, confidence and skills in these girls and, of course, want them to have fun.

On Wednesday, 13 April, the club had its jumper presentation night, with the clubrooms full of new and old families.

The club also has its Auskick kids which participate on Friday nights from 5.30pm6.30pm, where all kids from age five and upwards are welcome to join.

Kids and families being a part of a local sporting club is such a positive thing.

They make life-long friendships, gain confidence, develop self-esteem, as well as being active through training and games.

This game has given Warburton breathing space over Belgrave and Emerald. Warburton started well, but could have had a much bigger lead if they weren’t wasteful in front of goal. Still, a handy 12-point lead at quarter time. Belgrave failed to worry the goal umpires much in the second, and the lead increased to 25. Warburton came out in the third and put the result to rest by kicking 5.3 to 0.5. Scott Muir was again a formidable target up forward. Belgrave need to regroup as they come up against the Hawks next week.

Mount Evelyn managed to sneak a win on Saturday. Poor kicking is poor football and both teams seem to have got the yips. The Rovers led by 22 points at quarter time, but it should have been a lot more, 10 scoring shots to three means you should make the opposition pay. The second quarter saw it all tied up at the main break.

Emerald showed what it can do if you kick straight - 6.1 to 2.3. Mount Evelyn was still wayward in the third, kicking 2.7 to 2.3 and had a slender lead of four points. Both sides were scrappy in the last and it was a battle of the fittest. The difference was 2.4 to 1.7 for Emerald. Goal-kicking practice during the week for both?

Healesville had a handy win over Monbulk. It was far from impressive or convincing, but a win is a win. Monbulk outscored Healesville in the last half which should be a bit concerning as the faster running sides will make you pay. Healesville had a lead of 14 points at the main break, and increased that to 27 at three-quarter time. Monbulk kicked 5.6 to 2.1 in the last and should have made Healesville pay the consequences for poor defence, but they could not get the score on the board.

Wandin were coming off a huge win over Emerald and Olinda a hard fought win over Monbulk.

All I can say is ‘wow’. Consistency is a big thing if footy, and Wandin are not displaying any of that coming off an undefeated season last year. Olinda on the other hand set up their season nicely. Wandin was held to three goals for the day, which is rare.

Indirect kicking again was the order of the day, but Olinda were more direct in the second, kicking 7.2 to 1.4 to take a commanding lead of 40 points into the main break. The stalwarts at Olinda would have been buoyed to see Blake Walter return to the Bloods and kicking handy five for the day. Olinda now share top spot with Woori while Wandin sits seventh and come up against Healesville next week.

Yarra Junction came out and got the jump on Alexandra, kicking 4.7 to 2.2. They should have been further in front but sprayed it a bit in front of goals. Alexandra had a good second quarter, kicking 4.4 to 2.4 and reduced the lead to only five points at the major break. Alexandra let themselves down in the third by kicking 2.8 and by rights should have been in front, but still trailed by five points. Yarra Junction were more disciplined in the last, and kicked 4.1 to 3.4 and came away with a well-earned win.

Kinglake travelled to Seville on Saturday and came up against a side like them that had not registered a win yet. Warburton came out inspired, kicking 3.8 to 2.1. The lead should have been more but not sure if this was skill or wind affected, a handy lead nonetheless into the second quarter. Kinglake kicked a bit wayward in the second, 1.5 to 2.1, which did not help reduce the Warburton lead. The lead did not change by much in the third, and it was just a hard battle for either side to really get hold of this game. Warburton, however, had done enough and came away with their first win for the season.

This game started off close and never really changed all day. Three lead changes kept everybody on their toes. Monbulk took a slim lead at the first break. A 10-goal to 8 second quarter saw Healesville steal back the lead at half time. A-10 goal quarter

Seville notched up their first win for the season, beating a fighting Kinglake side. Dean Cecere and Josh Nixon were focal points up forward for their respective sides. Seville took a 12-point lead into the first. Both sides peppered the goals in the second, Kinglake kicked 5.4 to reduce the Seville lead to four points at the major break. Seville increased that lead out to 16 points at three-quarter time, and it looked like they were home comfortably. Kinglake rallied in the last and held Seville to 1.2 while they managed 3.2, but it was just not enough at the final siren.

Mount Evelyn sits third on the ladder after a convincing win over Emerald. Emerald just had no answers to hold Mount Evelyn’s running brigade.

Mount Evelyn had 11 goal kickers for the day and that in anyone’s language is hard to defend. A 4.5 to 0.0 for Mount Evelyn set up the day and they were never in danger. Mount Evelyn held Emerald goalless until the last, but Emerald battled on and celebrated their goals deservedly.

Upwey share the top of the ladder with Wandin after a 106-point win over Woori Yallock-Powelltown. Upwey started off slowly, only kicking 3.3 to 1.0 in the first. They kicked into gear after that and kicked 3.7 in the 2nd to 0.1. A big third quarter, kicking 8.5 gave them a lead of 91 points into the last. Woori Yallock-Powelltown showed courage and continued to challenge and will take it up to Emerald next week.

The rematch of the 2015 Grand Final did not disappoint. All tied up at 13 goals apiece and not an inch was given by either side. Olinda got a few turnovers in the second which gave them a two-goal lead at half-time. The tables were turned in the third, Mel Martinov and Tess Linkins both being strong under the ring shooting 12 and 11 goals respectively.

Wandin managed to get a break in the last and came away with a hard fought eight-goal win.

Yarra Glen got away to a good start on Saturday.

The wind certainly played a part in this game and made the conditions challenging for both sides. A score of 3.6 to 1.1 was a handy start and was wind assisted for Yarra Glen in the first. Powelltown took full advantage of it in the second, kicking 4.4 to 1.2 to take a small three-point lead in the third. It was all tied up after the third at 54 points apiece. The weather turned in the last and the wind dropped, so it was going to be a battle of skill in the last. Yarra Glen had all the running and kicked 5.2 to 2.5 to come away with a good win.

Last weekend, two members, Georgia Laven and Tayleb Willis, competed for the club and Victoria at the Australian Little Athletics Championships, held in Adelaide.

Georgia was one of the stars of the championships, taking out gold in both the 400m and 800m, while Tayleb achieved some exceptional performances in the 80m hurdles and the 4x100m relay.

The club AGM is on Wednesday, 4 May from 7.30pm at the Morrison Reserve clubrooms.

The club needs a big turnout of members to ensure the club continues to be well run, friendly and fun.

Next week, the club is at Lillydale Lake from 8.45am.

All welcome, gold coin entry.

The Athletics Victoria members will be at Wandin Park for Round 2 of the XCR16 season.

Entries close noon on Wednesday, 4 May. The club is running the canteen at this round and urgently need helpers from noon on Saturday.

EMERALD GOLF LAST Saturday at Emerald Golf Club, ex-servicemen were invited to pit their golfing skills against their peers.

It turns out that Peter Clowes (16) had no golfing peers as he cruised to an easy win with 40 points to win the plaudits and the wooden cannon made from the wood of an old piano which was significantly made in 1916.

Bobby Kennedy (20) came in next with 33 points followed by Peter Clarke (15) on 32 while Terry Bull (23) and Mike Banger (28) both managed 28.

Of the civvies, it was left to captain Dean Shannon to star when his 35 points was too good for the mob.

Dennis Fuller (15) came in next with 33 while Philip Crossley (18), Sepp Krummenacher (21) and Pete Glasscock (15) all managed 31 points.

Ross Martin was nearest the pin on the 4th and the 12th, John Carvill the 7th, Philip Crossley the 13th and Peter Glasscock pocketed the pro pin cash on the 18th.

Wednesday’s Overly Floppy Golf (OFG) was a stableford event with the proviso that, on each par three, one putt must be performed with the opposite hand.

Many furrowed brows and much language uncivil.

In the end, it was Philip Crossley who starred with 38 points from Moss Fuller 36 and Mick Petrie 33 with the rest somewhere south of these numbers.

The handicap pennant team travelled to Burnley to try to take some points while playing away.

They did that in style and romped home for a great 5/3 win to put themselves in the early running for a finals berth.

Next Saturday members compete for the May VGL Monthly Medal.

By KATH GANNAWAY YARRA Ranges Enduro champion Daniel Sanders was able to maintain his position at the top of the Australian Off-Road Championship (AORC) despite injury.

The 21-year-old, from Three Bridges, was competing in round five and six at Murray Bridge in South Australia on 23-24 April, when he injured his left ankle during Saturday’s fifth round.

He managed to win the first sprint, with a time of 9min05.278, but unfortunately crashed in the second heat after he got his foot caught, resulting in an injured left ankle.

“I’m not too sure what injury I have done, but my left leg is quite weak,” Sanders explained after the second sprint.

“I can’t put too much pressure on it, so today will be all about damage limitation and bring home as many points for the championship as I can.”

Sanders, who has been victorious in the opening four rounds of the 2016 AORC season, did exactly that and brought his KTM 300EXC machine home in fifth place with a total time of 1hr 05:27.964 overall and third in the E3 class.

“The plan was to get through the day and score some solid points for the championship, which we have done,” said Sanders at the conclusion of the day.

“It was lucky that I did pull a good lead in the first sprint which did kind of save the day. We’ll recover up for

Round six on Sunday and once again it was all about ‘bringing home the bacon’ for the 2014 Under 19s

champion.

Riding through the pain, Sanders again finished in a solid fifth place outright, with a time of 42min 36.257, while in the E3 he finished second

to Husqvarna’s Lachlan Stanford by 29.403 seconds.

Sanders did, however, lose a bit of time in the first test in the morning after he hit the deck twice and also came

off in the last test.

“If I didn’t crash in the last test, I could have opened some guy’s eyes, but that’s racing,” Sanders said at the end of the day, “You have to take the good with the bad sometimes.”

“Today, my foot was pretty sore.

However, thankfully the track was a bit more flowed a bit more, which was better for me.”

The KTM factory rider did label the day as a “confident booster” as he was racing injured, and couldn’t really turn left as well as he could; it was good to get away with a top five finish and a second in the E3 class.

“To get the results today in the condition, it has been a big confident boost for sure. We have a few months off now until the next two rounds in Victoria, so I’ll get back to full fitness and hopefully finish the championship off strong and try and win this championship for myself, the team and all the sponsors.”

“I have to give the 2016 ?KTM? Australia Off-Road Team a massive shout out, as once again they really do work super hard and supply me one of the best bikes out there - couldn’t do it without them.”?

The AORC now heads to Hedley in Victoria on the second last weekend of July. Sanders carries a healthy 14-point advantage in the outright championship, while in the E3 class, Stanford has slashed his title lead to just four points.

Lucky escape after high-impact crash

By KATH GANNAWAY POLICE are calling for witnesses to a crash in Woori Yallock on Wednesday 27 April, with the possibility of charges pending against one of the drivers.

Senior Constable Stephen Glenk of the Knox Highway Patrol said both drivers were lucky to walk away with minor injuries, given the severity of the impact and the 90km/h speed zone.

The crash happened about 6.30am on the Warburton Highway on the straight stretch of road between the Woori Yallock Creek and the intersection of Old Warburton Highway at Woori Yallock.

Hillcrest CFA Captain Fiona Burns said CFA units from Hillcrest and Seville and the Wandin Rescue Unit arrived to find one car off the road into a tree and the other down into a culvert after a side-on collision.

She said a Ford Territory and Toyota Land Cruiser had been travelling in opposite directions with the drivers as sole occupants.

“Both drivers received medical treatment at the scene from the paramedics,” she said.

Capt Burns said the road was exceptionally busy at what is the Yarra Valley’s version of peak hour and it was just lucky that no other vehicles were involved.

“A couple of people stopped to provide assistance and that sort of help is always appreciated, even if just to reassure the injured people until we get there,” she said.

The highway was closed for some time, with traffic diverted along Old Warburton Road.

Sen Const Glenk said police investigations into the crash were continuing.

“We don’t believe, however, that fatigue was an issue,” he said.

Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to contact Senior Constable Stephen Glenk or Senior Constable Suzanne Brendel at Knox police station on 9881 7900.

Transport projects sidelined once again

Top marks in customer service TOYOTA Australia has pledged to raise the bar for sales and servicing standards after a record-breaking two-thirds of its entire dealer network were awarded the maximum fivestar customer-service rating in 2015.

The latest results were determined by independent surveys of owners - whom Toyota refers to as guests - about the level of satisfaction with their experience at Toyota dealerships during the past year.

However, Toyota has now switched focus with the aim of gaining a deeper understanding of each guest and the factors that lead to their opinions rather than simply relying on whether a dealer’s performance is deemed to be satisfactory.

13 straight years has adopted cutting-edge practices designed to gain each guest’s loyalty and advocacy by providing them with a personalised experience that is exceptional.

Toyota Australia’s executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the new approach essentially asked customers whether they intended to recommend Toyota to their friends.

“We are committed to ensuring the experience Toyota gives you is so good it’s worth talking about,“ Mr Cramb said.

“We don’t just want satisfied guests, we want to deliver an experience that lives up to our ‘Oh what a feeling!’ brand promise every time we meet.”

Mr Cramb said guest experience - whether buying a vehi-

cle or having it serviced - must be well understood, closely monitored and continually improved.

“The goalposts keep shifting, so it is vital we really listen to our guests to ensure we have the information that enables us to be much more effective in improving the overall ownership experience for each guest,” he said.

“It is also good for our business because we can create a sustainable competitive advantage by ensuring our operations exceed guest expectations.”

Mr Cramb said the 2015 five-star guest experience dealers deserved commendation as their approach stamped them as leaders in the automotive industry.

He said 144 of the compa-

ny’s 209 participating dealerships - 69 per cent - attained the maximum rating for both sales and service.

This was an improvement from 88 dealers or 42 per cent of the network in the previous year.

Toyota already has a range of initiatives in place to improve the interaction with guests, revamping its dealer standards to include specific advances such as the appointment of a guest experience manager in each dealership.

“If we want to stay ahead of the market and meet the changing needs of our guests, we also have to get the basics right by remaining at the forefront of the industry so we can offer the best vehicles available in Australia,” he said.

LAST week’s Victorian Budget has delivered a significant increase in public transport spending by the State Government.

However, two vital projects for Melbourne’s east have once again been sidelined, according to the Eastern Transport Coalition (ETC).

While the ETC welcomes the State Government’s investment in the Melbourne Metro project the $6 billion to remove 50 level crossings, plus a commitment to deliver more new trains and buses - neither the Rowville Rail nor the Doncaster Rail projects have received a mention.

Significant work has already been undertaken on both these projects, which have been part of Melbourne’s broader transport planning for decades.

However, both projects have now stalled, waiting for funding to complete feasibility studies and additional investigations.

“The ETC recognises that projects like Melbourne Metro and level crossing removals need to happen in order to increase capacity across Melbourne’s train network,” ETC chairman, Cr Peter Lockwood, said.

“However, it is disappointing that these projects have disappeared from view entirely.

“There is still a great deal of work to be done and this could be happening now.

“We are still waiting for funding to complete stage two of the Doncaster Rail study to examine the preferred route in more detail and to protect the land needed

for this project from other development.

“That work needs to be done now if there is any chance of seeing this vital piece of infrastructure for Melbourne’s east delivered by 2029.

“Similarly, stage one and two of Rowville Rail’s feasibility study have been completed, yet we still don’t have a detailed patronage and cost-benefit analysis. Steps also need to be taken to protect land along the preferred alignment.”

Cr Lockwood said the $100 million promised to improve bus services was great news, although they were waiting to see details as to where and how that money would be spent.

“Far too little has been invested in Melbourne’s public transport network for far too long and it is great to see significant resources now being allocated to redress some of the inefficiencies in the system,” Cr Lockwood said.
