A top drop - and that’s no Furphy

BY JUSTIN FLYNN BEING Shepparton born and bred, but living in Barwon Heads since 2000, I was interested in trying out the relatively new Furphy Refreshing Ale. The beer, brewed in Geelong at Little Creatures Brewery using Furphy stainless steel tanks, was the brainchild of Furphy Engineering in Shepparton. Furphy tanks are famous throughout the country. So it was only right being a Shepp boy who now calls the City of Greater Geelong home, that I decided to taste test the ale that has taken the local market by storm.

Firstly, the beer has been around since July 2014, but it had escaped my clutches until very recently. Enjoying a night out, I ordered a bottle of this brew and savoured it immensely. But quaffing a beer doesn’t a proper taste test make. So I purchased a six-pack and took it home to try with a clean palate and an open mind.

The first bottle was poured into a chilled schooner glass. The beer was a deep amber colour and poured with a nice head. The aroma was fruity and the mouthfeel light with a hint of citrus. It lived up to its name ‘refreshing ale’. It’s the type of beer that would go down nicely with seafood or a barbecue. It’s also the style of ale that would stand up for a

long session with friends, or just one or two to relax.

The second bottle was drunk straight from the stubbie. Beer afficionados would scoff at such a method, but hey, it’s Australia and we like our beer straight from the vessel and it was only fair that,

in the name of research of course, that I try one the way that the majority of drinkers would. Again, the overriding flavours are that of citrus. It’s a bitter lager, but not overly so. What I liked most about the beer was its finish - it kept its flavour right through past the swallow.

At 4.4 per cent alcohol, it’s a full-strength beer and one 375ml bottle is 1.3 standard drinks. The label says the beer is made with the freshest of Victorian ingredients and that’s good enough for me. Furphy Refreshing Ale is a proudly Geelongbrewed beer and is available locally.

“It’s certainly educated our boys to be more conscious of their obligations and responsibilities to the opposite sex,” he said.

A number of other schools in Geelong have also signed up to the program.

Last year the Department of Education and Training announced that respectful relationships education would be part of the Victorian curriculum.

Barwon CASA Prevention of Violence Against Women project officer Dr Pamela Bjork-Billings said this was due to the well-researched link between gender inequality and violence against women.

“Teachers are supported by CASA staff who are experienced in this program and in dealing with the issues which arise when teenagers discuss relationships,” she said.

“An important aspect is the training provided to the teachers before the program begins and the ongoing support that the CASA gives.”

MATTHEW Flinders Girls Secondary College this month became the third school near Pakington Street to sign up to a ground-breaking program preventing violence against women.

The college will run the Respectful Relationships program for its Year 9 and 10 students with the Barwon Centre Against Sexual Assault (Barwon CASA).

College principal Michelle Crofts said the program would help their girls understand the issues of gender inequality and how to participate in respectful relationships.

“And what to do if they do not turn out to be what they expected,” she said.

The six sessions for students include topics such as consent, the impacts of sexual assault, speaking up about sexual assault and being a bystander.

Clonard and St Joseph’s Colleges signed up to the program in 2013, which is part of the Sexual Assault Prevention Program in Secondary Schools.

St Joseph College principal Paul Tobias said his school signed up to

THE success of the Geelong West Rotary Club’s annual Monster Book Fair, usually held in August each year, has prompted the club to double the opportunity for the community to purchase from the biggest variety of secondhand books at the best prices possible, by scheduling two fairs this year.

The first book fair for the year was held at Geelong West Town Hall on Saturday 12 March and then continuing on Sunday and Monday 13 and 14 March.

“The book fair has become such a popular event and we have collected and sorted thousands and thousands of great books, in so many genres, and we want to give the community more opportunity to get their hands on the amazing book bargains - the club will have over 25,000 books for sale and all books will again be only $1 each,” club president Jim Marendaz said.

Zonta honours young women TWO young Geelong women were honoured by the Zonta Club of Geelong at its annual awards dinner at Berkley Lodge, Geelong West earlier this month.

Sarah Kenworthy from Sacred Heart College was presented with the 2016 Young Women in Public Affairs Award, while Northern Bay College’s Taylor Smith was the recipient of the Sainsbury-Zandren Memorial Scholarship.

The goal of the Young Women in Public Affairs (YWPA) Award Program is to encourage more young women to participate in public affairs by recognising a young woman’s commitment to the volunteer sector, evidence of volunteer leadership achievements and a dedication to the advancement of the status of women.

Applicants are asked to reflect on their voluntary commitment to their school and to their community and the problems limiting the advancement of the status of women in their own country and worldwide. The Zonta International Young Women in Public Affairs Award Program looks to the young women of today for the leaders of tomorrow.

Sarah’s $1500 scholarship commemorated Ann-Hilda Sainsbury, a Geelong woman who worked in the area of women’s education and was a winner of the Zonta Club of Geelong’s Outstanding Achievement Award and Marianne Zandren, who was a founding member of the Zonta Club of Geelong.

The scholarship is awarded each year to a female secondary student, attending a government school or alternative Year 12 program, who has overcome adversity (i.e. single parent, financial hardship and medical issues) to complete her VCE, and who has gained a place at a tertiary educational facility.

Sarah is currently studying nursing and midwifery at Deakin University with a view to then studying postgraduate medicine. Last year she volunteered at a health centre in Mannya, Uganda - even delivering babies. The village had no running water or electricity and she became aware of the many risks for young girls who were often married off as young as 12. To help keep these young girls in education, Sarah started Light up Mannya, raising more than $15,000 for solar lights, meaning these young girls

could study at night. Sarah’s objective is to help improve health conditions in third world countries and for our own indigenous people.

Taylor is a remarkable young woman. Now studying for an Associate Degree in Arts with a view to transferring into a Bachelor of Social Work, she has overcome extraordinary physical difficulties to achieve so much.

Taylor has Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita, a relatively rare disease, characterised by reduced mobility of multiple joints. Taylor has a severe version of the disease, affecting both upper and lower limbs, which means she needs help for all activities of daily life. But her physical limitations, and constant pain and discomfort, have not held her back from fully participating in an active academic life.

The Zonta Club of Geelong is a member of Zonta International a worldwide service organisation working to empower women through service and advocacy. BACK Suburb’s shining PAIN? community spirit Significant pain can disrupt normal life and movement – often creating long term dysfunction and ongoing pain.

MORE than 1000 people enjoyed a sunny afternoon in the park at the fourth annual West Fest on 20 March.

Geelong West Neighbourhood House (GWNH) president, Pam Virgano, said the festival was a celebration of the suburb’s community spirit.

“It’s vibrant, multicultural and cosmopolitan," she said.

“Geelong West is unique and West Park is the jewel in it’s crown - it lends itself so well to what we are trying to do."

Young musicians filled the afternoon air with music, from country-blues and Indy, to the sweet acoustic sounds of Isabella Khalife.

STRESS Stress, what a wonderful thing Stress is a funny thing! It was originally designed to help our bodies cope with life threatening situations, but as life throws 21st century challenges at us such as work, relationships and financial stress it is not surprising that 35 per cent of Australians report having a significant level of distress in their lives . Some stressors can be removed, but sometimes they are constant and won’t be going anywhere anytime soon. Here are a few tips for helping to cope • Look after your health - Make sure you are eating healthy food and getting regular exercise. Take time to do activities you enjoy that are calming or uplifting, such as listening to music, walking or dancing. Avoid using alcohol, tobacco or other drugs to cope. Physical exercise - such as walking, swimming, playing golf or going to the gym can help relieve the tension in your muscles and relax your mind. Muscle tension exercises and controlled breathing exercises can also be very effective.

• Talk about it - Talking to a friend, doctor, counsellor or someone else you trust can help to relieve your stress.

Asking for help and support at home, at work or in your other activities can also reduce stress.

• St John’s Wort - has been shown to assist in the relief of nervous tension, stress and mild anxiety. A number of studies are available demonstrating effective relief of these symptoms. St John’s Wort is a plant, but only certain parts of the plant are able to help. The most researched, safe and effective extract is ZE117. This extract also appears suitable for relapse prevention as it is suitable for use for a longer period of time. Always check with a Pharmacist or Doctor to be sure this medication is safe for you.

Julie Corneby, a young mum of four from Belmont, has worked three days a week at Encompass during school hours for the past four years.

“Before having kids I was a dance teacher and so Encompass have me working with a dance group of about 20 people and we perform at functions," the 33-year-old said.

“It’s so rewarding to see the change in the people in my dance class and to see them grow individually and in confidence levels.

Some of them aren’t able to walk and so they slide around on the floor to the music. They have no limits."

“As a mother of four, it’s really hard to find a job between 9am and 3pm," she said.

“I think my nurturing nature as a mother helps me be naturally good at my job. You’re faced with all these different challenges and different personalities, and yet you’re already half way there being a mother.

“Being able to keep working makes me feel like I’m achieving something and it fulfils me. It gives me purpose and I feel like I’m making a difference."

Ms Corneby is also involved with a drama and music program, as well as a one-on-one support service for independent living.

She said that all support workers share similar passions, knowledge and creativity and that prior roles in the workforce go into consideration when placing workers in a support role.

Activities for all ages THIS edition we find ourselves at the lovely Sparrow Park.

It is probably one of the bigger parks in the Geelong West region and has plenty of activities to keep most ages occupied.

Taking a stroll through Sparrow Park you will find there is a bunch of things that will keep the kids happy. With an awesome playground, including a shopfront, a small maze, swings for babies and children, a basketball/netball hoop and a beginner’s skate park, this is the ideal stop-off on your way home from school or kinder.

During the week the park hosts a great spot for mothers' groups as well as a great place for dads to give mum some time off on the weekend. If you want to get out of the house for the day, why not

have lunch there? The park offers optimal seating in and out of the shade as well as barbecues and public toilets, perfect for a day of running around and refuelling with a sausage in bread.

While you’re in the vicinity you may hear a brass band blow a note or two.

Don’t worry, your life isn’t turning into some sort of musical, The Geelong West Brass Band use Fairley Lodge for their weekly rehearsals. When the band isn’t using the local hall, it is available for hire to the public. It features a kitchen, toilets, heating and air-conditioning, has an adequate supply of chairs and tables and can hold up to 100 people.

With a park that offers something for most age groups it really becomes a hub of community spirit and the best thing is - it’s free.

PAKO business Football helps solve hearing issue ONE of Mardi’s favourite memories is the day she helped a little Geelong boy hear clearly again, after two years with a blocked ear.

The boy’s family noticed that he wasn’t hearing well, and was starting to miss things at school. He is a bright little boy, so this wasn’t right. His parents took him to the doctor, and the doctor discovered that his ears were blocked with simple earwax, which would not come out. The boy went for a hearing test, but still the ears were blocked.

The family loves football, and are regulars at Torquay Tigers. One Saturday, his dad noticed an ear clinic sign at the football ground. So he checked out the website when he came home, and made an appointment for his son.

The whole family came for the appointment with Mardi, at Crystal Clear Ears on Pako.

Mardi is a professional ear nurse, and sees children and adults. She uses a specialised technique called micro-suction rather than water syringing.

She carefully worked with the little boy, gently removing the earwax while he watched a DVD. The parents were almost in tears, when their son suddenly said: “I can hear!”

Blocked ears may sound like a minor issue: No big deal. But hello! We need to hear!

Mardi says: “Having a blocked ear is like walking around with a pair of ear-muffs on. The problem is that blocked ears can be quite tricky to clear sometimes.”

“Each ear is a different size and shape, often narrow, with bends, like a cave. The fact that you can’t see in there yourself, means it can be a long time before you even know you have a problem.”

For this little boy, despite everyone trying their hardest, nobody could get the wax out.

Before they knew it, two years had gone by, with his family despairing.

Mardi talks about her work: “I work with a team of ear nurses, and we love our work. The other really nice thing is, that people love the technique we use to get the job done. This is one of the most satisfying areas of health care to work in.”

Blocked ears sounds like a simple problem, but people who suffer from them will tell you lots of stories of the difficulties they have had over the years, trying to get them clear.

Geelong doctors and audiologists regularly send their patients to Crystal Clear Ears since Mardi opened on Pakington Street, in Geelong in 2015, and word of mouth is spreading.

Mardi says: “Our Melbourne clinics have been established for nine years, and we like to help improve the health of the communities we work in. That is why we decided to support the Torquay Tigers, as they promote fitness through a love of sport.”

This time, they helped a bright little boy regain his hearing.

BURGERS! They are naughty but nice (wink wink), so we headed to Burger inc.

Burger inc use fresh local ingredients and nothing but top quality meats which are free from nasties.

They use la madre bread locally made and might I add they're the nicest burger buns I’ve tasted in a long time.

We ordered the fried chicken, the beef deluxe and the lentil burger.

Nathan my husband ate the fried chicken and said it was the best fried chicken he had ever had - tender, flavoursome and moist.

He indulged and had the burger deluxe which consisted of two beef patties, bacon and well the works,

the meat juicy and hearty (he couldn’t finish it all).

I had the lentil burger number 19 which is so big and yummy for a vegetarian burger consisting of a sweet relish, and greens on a beautiful seeded bun.

It was one of the best vegetarian burgers I have ever had!

Their menu is rather large, consisting of beef, lamb, chicken and vegetarian burgers, fresh salads and sides of chips and drinks.

Prices are reasonable and the meals are huge.

I would also like to mention Burger inc are hosting a fundraiser on 24 March to raise muchneeded funds for the Good Friday appeal - the menu will be minimal but all funds are going to the Good Friday appeal, so head down there that day, eat some yummy burgers and help raise funds.

New market for Pako ready for the gourmet set The market has relocated from Noble Street, Newtown. The market will be held on the third Saturday of each month (excluding winter). The next market is on Saturday 16 April from 10am to 2pm. It will be featuring Jutta Larcombe, a glass artist from Geelong. She creates small

bowls, games, ladybirds, and other fun pieces. She has exhibited her work over the years in the Annual Festival of Glass.

There is an eclectic mix of stallholders. Connie Fechner, children’s book author from Geelong, precious jewellery, cards and candles, making

handmade marshmallows, lemon curd, and Devonshire tea.

The other food vendors sell fudge, nougat, homemade Italian tomato sauce, jams, chutneys and more.

The market is in the supper room in the Town Hall, 135 Pakington Street, smack bang in the heart of the premier shopping precinct of Geelong West.

Oh what a festa it was - the 34th and biggest yet PAKO Festa celebrated its 34th year with the largest crowds ever.

The day was filled with colour, music and most importantly a diversity of food from around the world.

Geelong’s diverse communities - including Afghan, Bosnian, Chinese, Congolese, Croatian, Dutch, Filipino, French, Greek, Hungarian, Indian, Indonesian, Italian, Irish, Italian, Karen, Karenni, Lithuanian, Macedonian, Maori, Nepalese, Polish, Russian, Scottish, Serbian, Slovenian, Spanish, Sudanese, Thai, Ukrainian and Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-Op collectively put on the greatest show ever, starting with the parade at and then showcasing culture through food, craft and dancing.
