Valour for veteran By ALANA MITCHELSON PAKENHAM’S Matthew Moore was awarded a Quilt of Valour ahead of Anzac Day for his war efforts during World War II. The war veteran counts himself one of the lucky ones to have dodged the bullet of a post in England from which many of his peers did not return. Born in 1925, Mr Moore had grown up on a 2000-acre farming property near Perth. He vividly recalled that the first large crop had come in 1930, untimely as the Great Depression set in. “The price of wheat dropped dramatically, and my father never recovered from that,“ he said. “In ’42, just after Pearl Harbour, we reckoned there was no way Australia wouldn’t be invaded.“ And so, it was ultimately his father who decided Mr Moore would serve in the war, having submitted the paperwork on his teenage son’s behalf. “My father in all of his financial hardship actually sent my enlistment application - that was the level of fear he and everyone had about the Japanese attacking Australia. “I thought it was great at the time. I would be paid to see the world.“ Mr Moore was 16 when he joined the Air Training Corps. He completed a wireless operator and air gunner course that sent him to Ballarat for 10 months and he received his military flying wings and sergeant stripes. He was posted to England in August 1943, but by chance, he missed the ship. Little did he know that as many as 35 per cent of men in the air crew would not return home from their posting. Much of Mr Moore’s war service was spent flying back and forth along shipping lanes off the coast from Mallacoota looking for submarines. Amid the excitement of war, Mr

Moore maintains the best thing he ever did in his life was to start a family. “I met my future wife at a dance in Prahran when I was first posted to Laverton,“ he said. “The best thing I ever did in my life was to marry her. We waited until the war was over so that there was no uncertainty about our future together. I was 20 years old and we married on Australia Day.“

Honouring the brave THE Anzac Day dawn service at Pakenham was personal for Bass MP Brian Paynter. When it was his turn to address the large crowd that turned up to pay respects to those who gave their lives in various wars, Mr Paynter reflected on his own family’s shocking loss in World War II. The previous year - the Anzac centenary - he remembered his grandmother’s brother, Martin Augustus Barry, who landed at Anzac Cove in 1915 with the second wave and remained at war for 1428 days before returning safely home to Australia. “But not all of my relatives have been so lucky at war,” Mr Paynter said. “My great uncle Walter Paynter enlisted in the Second World War and was swiftly sent to the Middle East, where he was wounded in fighting and died. “His war lasted barely a year.” Walter’s brothers Doug and Cyril, aged 20 and 21, enlisted within three days of one another and were both shipped to the island of Ambon as part of an Australian Battalion of 1100 men known as Gull Force, landing on December 17 1941. Mr Paynter said the Japanese landed three battalions on Ambon during the night of January 30, 1942. “In the four days of fierce

fighting that followed, the Australian and Dutch troops on the island were forced to capitulate,” he said. Doug was killed and Cyril was among almost 800 surviving Australians taken prisoner. He was one of the 75 per cent of POWs who would subsequently fall victim to the brutal conditions, disease and starvation. “My three great uncles made the ultimate sacrifice for their country,” he said. “I also like to think that they gave their lives to ensure Australia has the freedoms and privileges that we enjoy every day of our lives. “But with these freedoms come responsibilities - common decency and respect for all people, equally, both men and women, is one such responsibility and we must constantly hold each other to account on this issue. “On this day I acknowledge the war efforts of our men and women for our great country.” Eastern Victoria MP Daniel Mulino also attended the ceremony and joined Mr Paynter in laying wreaths on behalf of the State Government. Guest speaker at the dawn service was Pakenham RSL member Major Guy Warnock, whose emotive and informative address appears in this week’s edition of the Pakenham-Berwick Gazette.

Sights on teen drinkers By ALANA MITCHELSON ST FRANCIS Xavier, Officer campus, and Pakenham Secondary College have confirmed their involvement in a new project that aims to reduce rates of underage drinking. Prompted by the findings of a joint Communities That Care and Victoria Police study that highlighted high rates of underage drinking in Cardinia Shire, the Smart Generation project focuses on adopting nation alcohol guidelines that discourage teen alcohol

consumption and reducing the supply of alcohol to teenagers by both parents and bottle shops. The report found that 37 per cent of bottle shops in Cardinia Shire sold alcohol without checking age identification. Recent surveys found that 36 per cent of young people in Cardinia were using alcohol as young as age 14. Smart Generation will involve monitoring liquor stores to deter retailers from selling alcohol to minors. The

project will also include schools educating both students and parents about the importance of delaying alcohol use for as long as possible. Schools participating in the project will have access to resources for school-based programs and will be able to tailor lesson plans for both early adolescents in Years 7 to 8 and their parents, as well as older adolescents in Years 9 and 10. Deakin psychology professor John Toumbourou emphasised the “serious

dangers“ in providing alcohol to underage youth. “The earlier a young person starts using alcohol the more likely they are to experience injuries and harms, impaired brain development and alcohol problems later in their life,“ he said. “Parents sometimes have the fear that if they don’t allow alcohol use at home their children may rebel and use alcohol behind their backs,” he said. “Research shows that in families where parents set a rule that children

are not to use alcohol, rebellion tends to be limited to the children having a few drinks behind their parents’ back and there are much lower rates of underage alcohol use. However, in the families where the parents allow moderate alcohol use their children are more likely to rebel with heavy and harmful alcohol use.” All secondary schools in Cardinia Shire have been invited to participate in the Smart Generation project. Fresh dealership taps in to boom times PAKENHAM is changing gears to become one of Melbourne’s fastest growing car markets, as construction begins on a state-of-the-art Mazda dealership on the Princes Freeway. According to statistics published by demographics firm .id, Cardinia Shire’s population is projected to explode by 86 per cent before 2036. “This is a very exciting opportunity for us because this expansion allows us to bring the proven integrity of an established country family business into the booming metro market,” Mr Clough said. “Behind this amazing new showroom and premium customer experience, there’ll still be a level of service finessed over 40 years under the Clough family name quite unlike anything currently available in the suburbs.” Construction of the new Bruce Clough Mazda dealership is estimated to inject up to $4 million into the local economy, with between 50 and 60 full-time workers to be hired during the project’s peak. The project will be delivered by Montlaur Project Services and construction firm APM Group (Aust), which recently completed the events and administration centre facilities as part of the high profile Pakenham Racecourse relocation. APM Group managing director Paul Howard said the impressive glass-walled structure would begin taking shape within three months. “This type of project comes together very quickly as a lot of off-site pre-cast work has already been done. It’s going to be quite a sight once it’s all erected,” Mr Howard said. “Mazda is one of Australia’s pre-eminent brands, so we are privileged and proud to be

Apex Anzac By GEORGIA WESTGARTH FIVE Apex arrests made over the weekend haven’t slowed down the violent south east gang. The infamous criminals viciously attacked a driver with a baseball bat before using his Mercedes Benz to invade a home in Cranbourne on Anzac Day (Monday 25 April). The frightening carjacking on Toorak Road in Toorak comes after five males aged between 16 and 19 were arrested and interviewed over two burglaries at homes in Ormond and Brighton East on Saturday 23 April. The inner city home invasions left occupants at both addresses with bruising and abrasions, after they were allegedly assaulted by the gang members. Taskforce Tense, set up in November last year to monitor the ethnic gang, executed warrants at addresses in Cranbourne and Hampton Park later that Saturday night. Police allegedly uncovered a stolen BMW, Honda CRV, mobile phones and a computer. The young males were arrested and interviewed over the two burglaries. Two have been charged with aggravated burglary, assault, car theft, handling stolen goods and possessing the proceeds of crime. The 17-year-old youth is facing the same charges, remanded to appear in the children’s court. Another 18-year-old man and a 16-year-old youth have

The armed carjacking involving an innocent 29-yearold Avondale Heights man, who pulled over his Mercedes Benz to send a text message, has prompted him to speak out on social media. Michael Jean-Pierre Tallal posted to the Pakenham Crime and Theft Facebook page urging drivers to be vigilant and “call the police before exiting your car”. Mr Tallal wrote: “As I was driving home ... a car hit me from behind.” “As I got out of my car to inspect the damage, five to six people got out of the car and assaulted me with a baseball bat. “They took my car keys, made me unlock and clear my phone. I was hit numerous times with the baseball bat. My glasses smashed along with my watch as I was attempting to shield my face. The police have advised me that this is a known gang to them committing these crimes all over Melbourne. “Four of the assailants were

of African descent and two were Islanders. “By the time I was released from hospital, numerous other crimes were committed using my car in Cranbourne and Vermont South. According to the police this gang is targeting new Mercedes Benz, BMW, Audi, Lexus and VW cars.” Police believe Mr Tallal’s car was used to commit an aggravated burglary at Valencia Circuit in Cranbourne about 3.45am on Monday 25 April. A police statement read that four to five males kicked the front door in and stole a number of items before being confronted by one of the occupants, who had armed himself with a baseball bat. The males, perceived to be of African and Islander/Maori appearance, fled the scene in awaiting cars, possibly a white sports car and a grey hatchback. One of her posters stated: “Narre Warren North residents said to me: radicalisation and terrorism risks of Islamic mosques should be considering in decision making.” Cr Crestani later told Star News she created the posters because she wasn’t allowed to raise these questions at the meeting. She said chanting protesters didn’t know the meaning of racism. “Racism doesn’t have anything to do with Islam. It’s not a race, it’s an ideology.” Narre North residents later told Star News that their objections were based on conserving their town’s rural character and were offended with being branded as racists. “It wouldn’t matter if it was a church or a mosque,” several told Star News. A Casey resident who supported the mosque said she wanted peace and unity in Australia. “I want my daughter to grow up in a faith where she’s not regarded as evil. “We have the same values as anyone else.” Saarban Islamic Trust spokesman Saeed Muhammad said Cr Aziz’s condemnation of the trust was “overly aggressive”. “He seemed to stress the point that we will challenge you.” The trust is expected to challenge the council’s decision at VCAT.

CASEY’S Mayor Sam Aziz denied the council caved in to Islamophobic elements as a proposed mosque in Narre Warren North was rejected amid vocal protests at a council meeting on 26 April. A prominent police and security detail kept watch as an overflow of mosque supporters raised posters decrying fascism or with slogans such as “Mosque: Yes. Racism: No.” After the council’s unanimous rejection of the 457-person mosque at 365-367 Belgrave-Hallam Road, a chant of “The mosque is welcome, racists are not” rang through the public gallery and out the door. There was no hint of Bendigolike violence between a staunch and largely-silent residents group who applauded the council’s decision and the protestors. At the meeting, the council vowed to throw “every resource” at defending its decision at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal and the Supreme Court, if the proponent Saarban Islamic Trust appeals. Cr Aziz told the meeting that this was “one of the most significant” planning decisions in recent Casey history because of the impact on resident amenity and the enivironment as well as more than 1000 “legitimate” objections from Casey residents. He thanked Casey’s residents who objected respectfully and with “genuine concern” but was disappointed with the applicant for his “unfounded comments” in the media. “For you to be shocked by the content of the report is at best mischievous or at worst malicious. “You have not endeared yourself in making these comments.” Cr Aziz took aim at the “rubbish”

I WAS bemused to once again read in the latest edition of City News that Casey council has applied to the Essential Services Commission to ‘vary’ (why not actually say ‘increase’) the 2.5 per cent rate cap. And, once again, Casey council continues to try and justify this increase with the excuse of ‘much needed infrastructure because our city’s growth is ‘unprecedented’. Well I won’t disagree with you on that point but can you please explain why in City News it states on page three that, and I quote, “our residents have made a few things clear: they understand that rates need to have reasonable rises”. Can you please tell me which residents you are referring to? Certainly no-one I happen to know or have spoken to. Oh, of course, you must mean all those employees at Casey council who are earning ridiculously exorbitant salaries paid for by none other than, you guessed it, us - your hard-working ratepayers! I realise Casey has grown at an exponential rate in the last few years; you only need to drive past Casey Race in Cranbourne to appreciate how rapidly that area has developed. I can only imagine the amount of money Casey council currently makes considering how over populated that area is becoming. What frustrates me the most is in the City News it states (again on page three) that “today’s children are tomorrow’s employers and home owners”. “We’re investing in a city that meets the needs of all residents at every stage of life, now and in the future.” Well, you know what, you’re not meeting my family’s needs. If you truly believe Casey should be investing our children’s future, why is there only one government secondary school in our zone, that being P-12. Yet almost every time I turn a corner, up pops another shopping complex. Obviously Casey council regards investing in the retail sector a more profitable and worthwhile venture than investing in our children’s future education. Why does Casey continually overlook the importance of providing more choices for families with school aged children who are living in Narre Warren South and cannot afford private education. Anyway, just to let you know, I will follow up this email with one to the ESC together with a copy of our latest rate statement. Sadly most people don’t realise - or even refuse to acknowledge - that alcohol is a drug. A term often used these days is ‘alcohol and drugs’. Writing on the walls PLEASE forgive me as I don’t mean to regularly write to the letters column regarding Mayor Aziz but he brings it upon himself. As the president of the Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association, I have to condemn the $12,000 spending of ratepayers’ money on billboards to be placed on the Monash Freeway for residents to report graffiti to VicRoads. At the last state election, council spent $10,000 on billboards to support the EastWest tunnel which is 45km away from Casey and what did we get from it? Nothing. I am happy to talk with the management of VicRoads myself and report back to the mayor as there is a communication breakdown between council and VicRoads. I will also invite the Roads Minister Luke Donnellan MP to the meeting. nificant jobs creation, higher tax revenues and a permanent boost to national GDP,“ the submission read. “Rural and regional areas have been recognised through dedicated funding, but outer growth area population hotspots have never benefitted from this type of approach. “Continued underinvestment will be catastrophic personally and for communities and businesses more broadly: increased stress, time wasted in traffic, fewer jobs and social isolation leading to divided communities.“ A SGS Economics and Planning analysis showed that an annual investment of about $5 billion over the next 15 years was required to meet the infrastructure needs of the growing population in these areas. Casey alone is growing by 120 people a week and will be home

to 490,000 residents by 2041. It is Victoria’s largest municipality with 300,000 residents. More than 120 people move in each week, with more than 490,000 residents projected by 2041. Cr Aziz said new analysis showed five million Australians - and counting - lack access to adequate roads, public transport and health facilities in the fast-growing suburbs on the outskirts of capital cities. “With 70 per cent of Casey residents leaving the municipality each day for work, council is working to stimulate investment in this corridor to create local jobs for local people. THE City of Casey and Cardinia Shire councils have joined forces to lobby for $190 million of federal funding to begin the duplication and extension of Thompsons Road. The Star News Group backed joint campaign aims to make Thompsons Road an alternative east-west thoroughfare to relieve congestion on the Monash Freeway. The proposal includes an upgrade of the Thompsons Road and Western Port Highway intersection to a grade separated interchange, the duplication of Thompsons Road from Dandenong-Frankston Road to Berwick-Cranbourne Road and the extension of Thompsons Road from Berwick-Cranbourne Road to Cardinia Road with plans for future extension to reach HealesvilleKooweerup Road. Bob shakes up the cash By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS DON’T call Bob Walker a tinrattler. As the 80-year-old Dandenong-Cranbourne RSL member said, he doesn’t need to shake a can to sell badges and poppies for the Anzac Appeal. Ask him about his story as he sits in his regular spot outside Doveton’s Autumn Place shops. It doesn’t take long to realise this Hallam knockabout has been a witness to notable history. Maralinga 1957. Mr Walker was a fresh-faced army recruit, who had just watched the Melbourne Olympics on a CBD cafe’s black-and-white TV screen. The crackling display was about the size of a modern day mobile phone, he adds with a laugh. Maralinga was the scene of British atomic-bomb testing at the time. Mr Walker saw four bombs go off from outside the eight-mile exclusion zone. “You can’t look at it because the flash will blind you. “After the initial blast, you turn around and just see this massive black cloud grow. “The mushroom cloud ... It goes up and up and up. You are amazed at it.” There was only one time when Mr Walker felt shockwaves from these tremendous

explosions. He believes the jolt that rippled through his body had bounced off clouds. The resulting Royal Commission into testing heard a lot of stories that were “bulldust” he said. The claim that intellectually disabled people were used as test dummies just didn’t happen he said. The safety systems in place were “unbelievable”, though Mr Walker wasn’t sure if the radiation-gauge badges actually worked. In 1957, Mr Walker was flown out to the Malayan Emergency - a 12-year guerrilla war in Malaysia. He arrived in time to be part of a ceremonial guard during the declaration of Malaysia’s independence from the Brits. It was the longest military conflict Australia had been involved with before Afghanistan. Yet no one here knew about it because it was never declared a war, Mr Walker said. Lords in London instead described the conflict as an emergency, to ensure insurers still paid out on rubber plantations and tin mines targeted by terrorists, he believes. His time at Puckapunyal army base from 1960 seemed to be more mundane. Memories of being “young and single and all the rest of

it” as well as painting a lot of stones on hard ground with white paint. “We had a saying: if it stays still, paint it.” More than 50 years on, Mr Walker sits patiently in the elements to collect for the RSL appeal. Most of his contemporaries prefer to work inside the shopping centres. “I can’t do a lot of physical work but at least I can help out by selling a few badges.” It’s a charity that helps young and old veterans out in hard times - 100 per cent of donations go to those who need them, Mr Walker points out. Most passers-by who stop are supportive. The odd person might rebuke Mr Walker, like a woman who told him she didn’t believe in supporting war. “I said to her who doesn’t! It’s not to help wars but to help a few blokes out.” Mr Walker tells of support services getting around a returned soldier from Afghanistan whose life went haywire and was living in his car. “People don’t ask for help. A lot of the time it’s stubborn pride.” He has his health problems - though he’s quite sure none linger from Maralinga. There are a lot of blokes who are worse off, he said. 725BHC

A man and woman - described as past customers - are believed to have swiped the reptiles from Narre Aquarium and Reptile Centre about 4.50pm on 19 April. BLIND Bight locals have been left terrified after shotgun pellets rained down on their roofs during a local farmer's fit of rage. At issue was a long-standing neighbourhood dispute involving the welfare of up to 30 dogs. A Blind Bight man, believed to be aged in his thirties, shot at property facades in Wild Duck Way after discovering police, RSPCA and a Casey council by-laws officer searched his family’s farm on Friday 15 April. An onlooker has described the hour-long incident as “highly stressful”. “Someone could have died, a young lady with a baby is traumatised. “He has absolutely terrorised everyone, some residents have said they saw four helicopters circling the home and he was shooting at trees and

Sex education debate hots up A GROUP advocating for an end to family violence has attacked a Casey councillor’s criticisms of a respectful-relationships schools program. Our Watch chief executive Mary Barry said it was “absurd” of Casey councillor Rosalie Crestani to suggest that the state’s Building Respectful Relationships program was sexualising children. “This confuses the problem with the solution.” At a meeting on 19 April, Casey councillors almost unanimously backed Cr Crestani’s motion against the program. Cr Crestani described the program in public schools as a “wolf in sheep’s clothing” that promoted premature sexualising of young people, citing Casey Multifaith Networks’ concerns about explicit content. “The community from so many walks of life have expressed outrage.” It was a “sexually political agenda”, akin to a “communistic approach of having the child controlled by the state”, Cr Crestani said. Ms Barry said the program taught young people to reject aggressive behaviour, sexualisation, discrimination and gender stereotyping. “Young people have told us that due to a lack of guidance from parents, teachers and role

It uses age-appropriate materials and proven teaching techniques.”

Ms Barry said a recent Royal Commission on family violence recommended the rollout of the schools program after a successful 12-month pilot. “We can continue down the path of letting young people work out how they feel about sex and relationships guided only by damaging influences and the advice of their peers. "Or we can do what the evidence says works.” Greens state MP Nina Springle was also critical of Cr Crestani, who “clearly doesn’t get” the program. “The reality is that our children are being exposed to shocking stuff through the internet and mainstream advertising, despite our best efforts as parents. “The implication of Councillor Crestani’s opinion is that children continue to be exposed to this without being given the tools to think about the messages they’re receiving about gender.” Despite parents feeling “uneasy” about the content, the classroom was the best place for “evidence-based discussion”, Ms Springle said. “It’s disappointing that biased and blinkered views like Councillor Crestani’s get a run while thousands of experts are working tirelessly to actually introduce evidence-based changes that will prevent family violence.”

Pakenham manager Rachel Kollmorgen said that the idea of bringing horses to seniors in the community had been used to commemorate last year’s Anzac Centenary and to give them an opportunity to ‘lift their spirits’. “It gives many people the chance to speak about memories of their parents who served in the war,” she said. “It is incredible to hear their accounts of what the war time was like. A lot of that generation grew up with horses and have a connection with them, so it is great to see their faces light up when they see the horses.”

Craigcare Berwick residents fed carrots to the actor horses - black Percherons Jet and Junior - who lapped up the attention. Through the mists of time By ALANA MITCHELSON OFFICER’S inaugural Anzac Day Dawn Service attracted a large crowd which gathered to stand in remembrance of the Anzacs who served at Gallipoli. As kookaburras trilled their own tribute to the fallen, the flags were lowered to half-mast and Rob Porter of the Officer and District Community Association opened the service. After a speech from Councillor Tania Baxter, Betty - the daughter of WWI returned soldier Sergeant Clair Whiteside and former local councillor - read a prayer. Sergeant Whiteside had enlisted at age 21 and survived the Battle of Fromelles, the first battle after Gallipoli. He was one of the few to reach the German lines, Betty said. The Officer crowd of about 500 comprised of many young families and local clubs. Representatives from various com-

munity groups laid wreaths at the memorial gates in memory of the men - some just boys as young as 16 - who died for their country 101 years ago. For some members of the community, it was their first Dawn Service experience, while others said they broke their tradition of attending the annual Pakenham service “to try something new“. This year it just felt right to come out and it was a beautiful service.“ Ms Thompson’s friend Jeannette Ehrlish said she was the daughter of a Holocaust survivor. “I think Anzac Day brings the community together,“ she said. “It’s a day to think about the different ways our communities have been touched by war.“

Pipes are calling a victory By ALANA MITCHELSON THE Haileybury Pipes and Drums band have regained their title after defeating their Scotch College rivals at the state championships. Haileybury College clinched victories in both the Juvenile and Grade 4 adult categories this year at Ringwood Highland Gathering earlier this month. Events co-ordinator Sarah Denham said the Pipes and Drums spent hours rehearsing in preparation for the contest. “With the combination of fellowship, talent and hard work, all of their efforts paid

off,” she said. Pipe Major and Year 12 student Thomas Perry said Haileybury had not expected the win. “Band performances are not a question of individual excellence, but are rather a question of teamwork and co-ordination. We really hoped that our teamwork could make the difference. This ethos was reflected in our preparation, where it was about bonding and playing as an integrated unit,” Tom said. “Our pipes stirred, our drums beat, and the Haileybury colours fluttered in the intermittent wind as we stepped off from the starting line.

“We knew the Haileybury Pipes and Drums had come a long way, but the opposition was going to be tough to beat. Our traditional rivals, Scotch College, had an extraordinary few years with plenty of talent, will and discipline. “We knew we had beaten them before and we were determined to give them a run for their money. “When it was announced that we had won the championships, we unleashed a cacophony of celebratory sound that I am sure could be distantly heard in the highlands of Scotland.”

Warriors stay positive By RUSSELL BENNETT THE Pakenham Warriors Big V women’s basketball side is sick of losing. Coach Darren Thomas’ team went through its whole debut campaign in Division 2 winless, and so far that’s continued through their first five games of 2016. They’ve experienced the bitter taste of defeat enough, and are doing everything they can to record what would be a famous first win. The group has continued to stick together, making marked improvements along the way, but now it’s about translating those into numbers in the win column on the ladder. The Warriors’ women’s side is in it for the long haul. Thomas knows there’s more to it than wins and losses, but right now the ledger isn’t exactly tilted in his side’s favour. “We still need to have

some success because we didn’t win any games last season and we haven’t yet this year either,” he said. “This is supposed to be an elite competition so we still need to make sure we’re competitive and not just turning up and getting beaten convincingly. “Our first nine rounds last year we had an average losing margin of 46 points. “For the second nine we got that down to 36, which is better, but that’s still around the 40 mark. “We’re still moving in the right direction this season, but our first quarters are killing us. Take away our first quarters and we’re in games.” From winning quarters, the Warriors now need to start winning games. They’ve dramatically lowered their turnover count, and they’re putting up more shots. The statistics are starting to turn in their favour, but they need to see that translating.

“When we run our offenses we get good shots,” Thomas said. “When we do actually run them, they work. “The challenge we have is that our intensity at training hasn’t been where it’s needed to be so the only time we get exposed to the high pressure on our shots is game day.” But the playing group is sticking together - now disappointed with every loss, rather than simply being pleased with their effort. When that first win comes - look out. The celebrations could be unprecedented. The Pakenham Warriors Big V Division 2 women’s side will this Saturday night head to Melbourne University to take on the home side from 6.30pm. Following that, their next opportunity for a win will come at Coburg against the Giants from 6.30pm on 7 May.

Magpies on track By DAVID NAGEL A SENSE of nationalistic pride has swept across the South East Football Netball League as the Anzac Day weekend gave us a much clearer picture of the season ahead. We already knew that Berwick and Cranbourne were the pace-setters, but the way they despatched of two of the up-and-coming challengers in Doveton and Tooradin on the weekend has put a huge exclamation mark on that point. So who has emerged from the pack? Narre Warren was the big mover in the confidence stakes on the weekend, a 47-point victory over Beaconsfield proving that new-coach Heath Black has the Maggies on the right track. But for all other finals aspirants, Beaconsfield, Doveton, Pakenham and Tooradin, it was a weekend when reality really did hit home. The previously unbeaten Doves showed typical fight in the first half, but were then blown away by a very-well-oiled Berwick machine that purred like clockwork in the third term. The Wickers kicked 7.2 to 2.4 in the ‘premiership quarter’ to take a 39-point lead to the final break. “I was really happy with how the boys responded after half time, they were hungry to make amends and that’s a promising sign,” said Berwick coach Rhys Nisbet. “We haven’t put a full four quarters together yet but hopefully that will come soon.” The Wickers stretched the margin to 48 by the final siren, with five goals to Ben Kearns and

Blair Allan was also outstanding for the winners while Beau Wheeler and Cory Lenders were terrific for Lions - who now the bye and two weeks to stew over the loss. And finally, Cranbourne overcame a slow start to crush Tooradin by 91 points on Anzac Day. Unretired, as Jade makes a comeback By DAVID NAGEL IT was the calm before the storm in SEFNL this week with ROC posting its first win of the season and Narre Warren and Tooradin warming up for this week’s block-buster clash at Kalora Park with impressive performances. The retirement of Narre Warren premiership coach Jade Heinrich has lasted all of one week, Jade sensational as goal-attack in the Magpies 41-27 victory over Beaconsfield at Holm Park Reserve. The Magpies were down a couple of their key players this week, with Kara Hargrave and Chloe Phillips sitting on the sidelines; meaning Jade, Brittany Mashado and Sophie Gambetta could join a side that won so impressively against Doveton last week. The Magpies took control of the contest in the first half, scoring 2411, before easing up after half time.

Defender Tracey Dell was sensational for the Magpies, combining with Adele Clydesdale and Gambetta to limit the Eagles to just six and five goals in the first two quarters. Danni Cameron and Gabby Stinear defended stoutly for the Eagles, who threw Kaela Hughes into defence to limit the flow of traffic in the third quarter. Doveton has bounced back to the winning list with a staggeringly-good second half performance against Berwick at Edwin Flack Reserve. The Doves, who were torn apart by Narre Warren last week, scored 32 goals to 19 after half time to run away with a convincing 53-41 victory. After scoring just eight goals in the second term, the Doves exploded in the third. Samantha Kappl and Liz Edwards caught fire under the ring,

while the reigning B Grade Player of the Year’s, Natalie Montanari and Breanne Miller, lifted their rating in defence and through the midcourt respectively. The Doves scored 17 goals to nine in the third quarter, to take a seven-goal lead, before cruising home for their third victory in four outings. ROC’s A Grade girls capped off a magnificent day for the club, proving too strong in the final quarter to roll Pakenham 42-36 at Starling Road. The Kangaroos had a great day out, winning eight of the 10 matches on the day, with a draw in B Grade and a loss in the 17 and Under Red’s the only games where four premiership points didn’t return to the club. After a topsy-turvy first three quarters things were locked at 3030 heading into the final exchange,

with the game well and truly up for the grabs. And it was the Kangaroos who wanted it more, Ash Barnett, Jaz Cross and Gemma Stacey lifting in the middle, while Sam Neil played a cracking last quarter in goal-attack. And finally, Tooradin has continued its magnificent start to 2016 with a powerful 53-41 victory over Cranbourne at Westernport Oval on Anzac Day. The Seagulls looked red-hot early; Jess Maher and Shona Wells combining brilliantly from defence into the midcourt, while the feeding of goalers Kelly Haynes and Alex Duff lacked nothing in comparison. Sharni Lambden had her hands on the ball often for the Eagles and her partnership with the likes of Darcy O’Donnell and Steph Ryan will get smoother over time. Hampton Park had the bye.
