Council’s rainbow flag A LOCAL advocacy group has praised the new council for taking a stand against homophobia and transphobia. Deputy Mayor Frank Wilkie says Noosa Council will fly a rainbow flag on 17 May in support of International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHOT). “The gesture affirmed council’s objective for an inclusive, toler-
ant and welcoming community,” Cr Wilkie said. “Council wants every resident and visitor to enjoy a safe, peaceful experience here in the Noosa Shire. “Noosa is a place where everyone, regardless of ethnic and cultural differences, age, gender, ability, or sexuality, should feel included and valued. This is a key goal of our Noosa Social Strategy.” Council’s community services director Alan ‘Fox’ Rogers said research council undertook for the so-
cial strategy showed LGBTI people were over-represented among Australians suffering mental health issues and social isolation. “Raising the rainbow flag - an international symbol of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender pride and diversity - is a simple gesture but a clear demonstration that this council values diversity and condemns intolerance,” Mr Rogers said. Local LGBTI advocacy group Sunshine Coast Rainbow Network
(SCRN) director Fi Anderson said this act of recognition made a huge difference. “One of the most powerful ways of changing the toxic culture of homophobia, transphobia and biphobia is through community leadership,” she said. “We have to make people aware that bigotry has a body count. That’s the message of IDAHOT, too. “Physical and verbal abuse, rejection by parents and family members,
being ostracised by your church, sporting or community groups, being denied the basic right to marry the person you love - all these things lead to alarming rates of suicide attempts, substance abuse and depression within our community. It has to stop.” “Flying a flag may seem like a small gesture, but it’s hugely symbolic. It’s a step towards recognition, respect and acceptance. That’s what we’re all fighting for. Noosa Council has done a good thing.”

IT WAS all play and no work for Bondi Rescue’s Anthony ‘Harries’ Carroll as he enjoyed a paddle along the picturesque Noosa River on Saturday 23 April. Anthony’s wife Emily and local surfer Nic Jones joined the well-known lifeguard as local business Luxe Fitness Escapes hosted the trio for a morning of relaxation. Luxe Fitness Escapes founder Kelly Carthy said the famous trio enjoyed their morning checking out Noosa’s great scenery while relaxing on stand up paddleboards. “As I am from Bondi and Harries (Anthony) was up for the Aussies over the last week with his family I invited him and his wife along with pro surfer Nic Jones out for our Signature Luxe Stand Up Paddle Active Experience,� Kelly said. “Harries has recently completed his Pilates instructor’s course and was really interested to see how he could incorporate this new passion for Pilates back into the water where he spends a lot of his time in Bondi. “He was blown away with how beautiful our waterways are and enjoyed the challenge of the Pilates session on Paddleboard as well as the ability to have some time out meditating on a board amongst the mangroves.�

Complaints policy under review By MEGAN OGLE FORMER Noosa Mayor Noel Playford will join a panel of local government experts to review how complaints about mayors and councillors are managed in a bid to tidy up local politics. Minister for Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning Jackie Trad said the Councillor Complaints Review Panel would examine the statutory provisions relating to complaints to assess the effectiveness
of the current legislative and policy framework. The panel would also make recommendations about any policy, legislative and operational changes required to improve the system of dealing with complaints about councillors’ conduct, Ms Trad, who is also the Deputy Premier, said. “The Palaszczuk Government is committed to ensuring there is public confidence in transparent and accountable local governments,” Ms Trad said. “This review is about ensuring
councillors are held to high standards of ethical and legal behaviour, which puts the public’s interests ahead of any individual interests. “It’s also about ensuring that when legitimate complaints about councillor conduct are made, they will be dealt with promptly by the appropriate body in accordance with the rules of procedural fairness and natural justice.” Mr Playford joins former Integrity Commissioner Dr David Solomon and former CEO of Logan City
Council Gary Kellar on the threeperson panel. “This panel will work closely with my department and local government to progress the review, and I expect the panel will be ready to hand down their recommendations within six months,” Ms Trad said. She said the review followed a number of concerns raised by local government bodies. “Recently, Local Government Managers Australia Queensland wrote to me, expressing concerns
with the potentially conflicted role of local governments’ chief executive officers in the preliminary assessment and general management of complaints,” Ms Trad said. “Local Government Association Queensland has also sought changes to the way in which complaints are dealt with under the Local Government Act 2009, particularly the inability to currently seek review of those decisions and the need to better ensure natural justice is afforded to all parties.”

Space for our working mothers on the move A GROUP of local mothers have banded together to create a child friendly work space for mothers on the go. The Powerhouse Co-operative was formed by working mothers Aimee Sherriff, Ellie Bermigham, Jenny Webb and Tess Lehman who
wanted to create a shared work space for parents that was professional and child-friendly. “We have each acknowledged the trials and discontents that come with being a work-from-home mother, so we have banded together to start a not-for-profit cooperative offering work space for stay-at-home mothers with a creche attached," Ms Sherriff said.

Getting NDIS ready A WORKSHOP is coming to Noosa to help prepare residents for the rolling out of The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) due to hit Queensland from July this year. Mamre Pave the Way has been contracted by the Queensland Government to prepare individuals with a disability and their families for the scheme, and will hold workshops across the state in a bid to prepare people for the changes. Throughout May, Pave the Way will be visiting Noosaville, Kawana, Nambour and Caboolture with their Paving the Way to the NDIS presentation. The presentation includes an overview of the NDIS, what planning needs to take place in preparation for the scheme, as well as how to develop confidence as a consumer of disability services. The roll-out of the scheme will impact
460,000 participants, and will be rolled out nationally by 2019. Chairman of the National Disability Insurance Agency Bruce Bonyhady said the NDIS will significantly impact Australia. “(The NDIS) is the most significant economic and social reform since the introduction of the original Medicare scheme in the 1970s,” Mr Bonyhady said. “All participants in the NDIS - all 460,000 of them - will receive the funds to purchase reasonable and necessary supports.” The workshop will take place in Noosa on Thursday 12 May from 10am to 1pm at the Ivory Palms resort, 73 Hilton Terrace, Noosaville. Attendance to it is free, however registrations are essential and can be completed on the Pave the Way website at www. pavetheway.org.au or by calling 3291 5800.

Best start to day for kids THE local community has banded together to ensure kids start their day in the best possible way. Every Wednesday morning, before the school bell rings, about 130 students from Cooroy State School gather at the canteen and tuck into breakfast. The breakfast club program is run by school chaplain Ett Ison and her team of volunteers from the Cooroy Uniting Church. Ett says the aim is to give the children, who might have missed out at home, the best start to the day.
“Kids come each week and get the chance to eat with their peers, but they also interact with the volunteers and with me," Ett said. “Our school runs this service as a team. Research says that one in four children miss breakfast, and that’s for any number of reasons - anything from time to lack of resources on the day. Having a healthy start to the day will help improve their concentration throughout the day.” Although the school hasn’t tracked con-
centration levels of the children who participate, teachers have noticed a difference. “It’s more just observations by the teachers, that the kids are on track and more focused with their work,” Ett added. “Our volunteers want to do something back for the community through their church, and this is one way of doing it. Things get busy with so many kids coming at once, but the kids' kind manners go a long way. We’ve got the kids down to a fine art with their pleases and thank yous.”

Cool burn heat on the way SUNSHINE Coast, Gympie and Wide Bay Burnett residents may notice smoke in the air over the next few months as landholders take proactive measures to reduce bushfire risks. Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ) North Coast Regional manager Peter Hollier said he expected an increase in hazard reduction burns by landholders in the lead-up to bushfire season, coinciding with firefighters undertaking work as part of Operation Cool Burn. Operation Cool Burn is a largescale initiative involving Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES), the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection,
Department of National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing, and local councils working together to undertake mitigation activities across Queensland to reduce fire risk in bushfire-prone areas. Mr Hollier said the North Coast region had experienced a dry summer with little growth to grass and bushland, but that did not mean residents could be complacent. “There was below average rainfall during the summer months, which inhibited the grass fuel load across the region,” Mr Hollier said. “There are still pockets that have been identified as potential fire hazards, so it is important action is taken early to prevent them from becoming
a threat during bushfire season. “Often the most effective way to reduce the fuel load is burning it in a controlled fire. This is known as a hazard reduction burn or a controlled burn. “There may be large burns that will produce a large volume of smoke over the coming months. There’s no need to be alarmed though, as we’ll have plenty of resources on hand to safely and effectively reduce the fuel load.” Mr Hollier said it was important that landholders reduced fire hazards on their property, such as removing undergrowth and raking up bark and sticks.
“It is the responsibility of every resident and landholder to ensure their properties, homes and families are bushfire prepared,” Mr Hollier said. “Landholders who want to conduct a hazard reduction burn should contact the fire warden in their area first to obtain a free Permit to Light Fire. “This is a simple but important process. Permit conditions are mandatory and it is important people abide by the rules outlined by the Fire Warden. If these are not implemented, the permit is invalid. The responsibility of containing a fire to a permitted burn lies with the landholder.”
Mr Hollier said permits contained clear guidelines on when a fire could be lit and what precautions needed to be taken. “Permit holders must also notify their neighbours of planned burns. This reduces the chance of unnecessary calls being made to emergency services,” he said. “Tough penalties can apply for people who light fires without a permit.” Landholders can locate their local fire warden by using the Fire Warden Finder tool on the Rural Fire Service website or by contacting their local area office. In memory of the fallen THOUSANDS joined together to pay their respects despite cool temperatures and blustering winds at Anzac Day services held across the region on Monday 25 April. The Noosa Tewantin dawn service saw hundreds line the street as parade commander Paul Jenkinson lead the Anzac Day march through the town centre. The humble ceremony honoured those fallen and serving as the crowd fell silent after The Last Post, played by Elliott Rowely, echoed through the quiet streets. Tewantin Noosa RSL Sub-Branch deputy president Bruce Huntington led the ceremony which saw former deputy prime minister Warren Truss, Mayor Tony Wellington and Councillor Joe Jurisevic among those who laid wreaths. This year marks the 100th year anniversary of the formation of the Returned and Services League (RSL) which was formed in June 1916 by troops returning from the First World War, making the RSL the first national welfare agency in Australia. The RSL was born due to a lack of formal government welfare services for veterans and now, 100 years on, continues to preserve the spirit of mateship, to honour the memory of the fallen and to help its members whenever required.

Student leaders pledge service By RON LANE FOR those of us who attended the 9am Anzac Day Memorial Service at Tewantin, I think we would agree that one of the most moving moments was when the students chosen to represent the various schools, assembled in front of the old diggers and as a sign of respect, acknowledged their service to their country. Along with the students were nipper representatives from the Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club Locky Younger and Lilly Tindall. The club has for years laid a wreath at this service, and following last year’s re-enactment of the landing on Noosa’s Main Beach, many young members have expressed a wish to somehow become more involved. As a result a team of 12 members both senior and nippers, took part in the march and ceremony. With a Role of Honour Board, now proudly hanging on display in the club, some young members are becoming more aware of the contribution these past lifesavers made, to not only their community but also their country. With names such as New Guinea, Borneo, Malaya, Vietnam and Afghanistan mentioned, it tends to add to the pride and tradition of the club. Proud to say that many more clubs are starting to recognise the military service of their members. Let us not forget that one of our lifesavers Frank McNamara of the Elwood Life Saving Club won the Victoria Cross during WWI. Also a book entitled, Those Who Served: Surf Life Savers at War by Stan Vesper, is now in circulation. Lest We Forget.

Juliana will set out from Newcastle Harbour on 1 May, and aims to finish the recordbreaking paddle on Peregian Beach on 11 June, after 42 days of paddling. “This particular month was

IAN Thorpe is tackling bullying in a new TV series, and he wants to hear from you. Olympian and former Young Australian of the Year Ian Thorpe OAM will host a confronting new series aimed at tackling the issue of bullying by taking audiences to the frontline. The aim of the new series, The Bully Project, is to examine the causes, context and consequences of bullying in Australia today. Ian is encouraging members of the public aged 14 to 18 years of age to get in touch to take part in the project which is being carried out with the support of ReachOut. “More than a quarter of school children in Australia claim to have been bullied on a regular basis which is unacceptable,” Ian said. “I’m passionate about shining a light on this issue. “I have some personal experience around the issue of bullying, so I want to share my insights to help Australian kids.” Lune Media managing director Leonie Lowe said she believed the project would generate comment and debate among the public. “It will bring to light an issue that is widely known about but rarely understood, while at all times protecting the rights and welfare of all those involved,” she said. MORE Noosa small businesses have joined the race for high-speed broadband as a third aerial is installed in Noosa. The Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland (CCIQ) Noosa and Sunshine Coast-based Our Community Broadband (OCB) joined forces to deliver a fixed wireless broadband aerial network. OCB have recently installed the third aerial in inner Noosa with several businesses already signing up for faster internet. CCIQ Noosa president Peter Chenoweth said the location of the businesses at Noosaville and on the North Shore was significant as it demonstrated the reach from the new Noosa Hill aerial. “A second fixed wireless broadband aerial was installed

COOROY’S annual Fusion Festival is just around the corner and is set to be jam-packed with fun for the whole family. The festival is to be held on Saturday 7 May, with activities spanning from the Cooroy Mill Site to the CWA Hall.
Cooroy Fusion committee chairperson Chris Bell said this year’s festival was set to be bigger than ever. “There will be live music and plenty of demonstrations throughout the day as well as activities for all ages,” he said. “There are so many options so get in early and make sure you have a chance to see everything you want to.” New additions to this year’s program include a 15m inflatable obstacle course which will play host to the Cooroy SUPA IGA Obstacle Challenge, giving attendees a chance to battle it out with mates. Cooroy IGA will also host a local food tasting marquee showcasing local food producers such as Noosa Meats and Wimmers. This tasting area will be set up adjacent to the jumping castle and obstacle course so patrons can sample the goodies while watching all the madcap action. There will be plenty of activities to keep children entertained including the popular all-day Lego Lounge and the First Five Forever Story Play area which will hold a range of creative resources for children and parents to discover new ways to encourage early literacy. Things also get a little wilder this year with the return of the Geckoes Wildlife show and display. “We had a Geckoes Wildlife show last year and it was so popular we thought we’d expand it this year and thanks to Greenwood Grove’s sponsorship we will have a stage show as well as a display and the opportunity to get up close and personal to some wonderful wildlife as they walk around the festival,” Mr Bell said. Cooroy Fusion also showcases local talent and the Fusion Author Fair in the Library does just that by offering a chance to discover the talented wordsmiths who live in the local area. Books will be for sale, with authors there to sign your copy. And why not enjoy some great live music as you relax in the ever-popular Cooroy RSL Pickled Possum Bar. How to vote WITH reference to Lesley Bloomfield’s letter (Just Being Helpful, Noosa Today, 21 April), I have only ever stated facts. Voters were sent to the Returning Officer’s polling booth. I have never suggested or implied that this action was improper or illegal. My objection was purely that voters were not first given the chance to receive How To Vote cards. To clear up another misconception, a number have people have defended the interception of voters by saying that there were representatives of other candidates at the RO’s Office when they went to vote. I have consulted with both Sandy Bolton and Ray Kelly’s team; representatives only sent teams to that office after it was known that Wellington team members were sending voters to that booth. Finally, if the intention was purely to help voters stay out of the sun, and knowing the high level of co-operation between almost all candidates at the pre-polling, why didn’t somebody from Tony Wellington’s team come and tell the rest of the representatives of candidates so we could each send someone to the other polling booth? Rather than selling Noosa people short, as the writer has claimed, I believe I have provided a voice for those who feel they have been manipulated, and are looking for fairness and accountability from those who would be their representatives in public office. VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN DOESN’T JUST START. IT GROWS. On average, one woman is killed every week at the hands of a current or former partner. One in three women has been a victim of physical or sexual violence, since the age of 15, from someone known to them. One in four young people are prepared to excuse violence from a partner.
Not all disrespect towards women results in violence. But all violence against women starts with disrespectful behaviour. When we make excuses like “It’s just boys being boys”, we allow boys to develop attitudes that can lead to violence. We raise girls to expect ridicule from boys when we tell them “He’s only doing it because he likes you”. When we do confront unacceptable behaviour, we play it down by saying “Don’t worry, it wasn’t that bad”. We’re allowing disrespect to become a normal part of growing up. By doing so, we are unintentionally part of the problem. We can all become part of the solution.

This is a cycle of violence, which starts with disrespect.
AFTER loudly crying “Debt and Deficit” in the last federal campaign, the Coalition did everything that they could to enable the big end of town to avoid its responsibilities as a corporate citizen. The coalition withdrew $120 million from Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC). Consequently, ASIC has no teeth and has been unable to properly regulate the corporate and banking sectors. The Coalition also sacked 4400 taxation staff who were working on overseas tax avoidance. In the meantime two financial scandals have hit the banking sector. Twelve months ago, the first scandal broke. The banks were giving misleading economic advice to customers as revealed by the ABC’s 4 Corners program. At the time Greens Senator Peter Wish-Wilson, who previously worked as an international merchant banker, called for a Royal Commission into Australia’s banks. More recently a bank insurance scandal was uncovered. Many thousands of Australians were hit hard financially by this ruthless behaviour. Treasurer Scott Morrison is now proposing that the banks themselves restore the $120 million funding to ASIC and allow banks to selfregulate. This is the Coalition’s ploy to head off a Royal Commission into banking. The coalition received $3,465,466 from the banking and financial sectors in political donations before the last election. The coalition is now adamantly opposed to a Royal Commission into the banking sector. Through poor behaviour, banks are making massive profits at the expense of ordinary Australians. It is high time that we put them under the microscope to prevent further malpractice and rein in their outrageous profiteering. Ask yourself, what is it the banks don’t want revealed? Bite back THE recent unhappy ending of a snake catching episode in North Queensland once again points the finger at the brainless legislation that protects all reptiles and requires captured reptiles be returned to the wild. With some four score years and 10 or more bashing behind me, I am confident in advising would-be snake catchers to leave the forksticks at home and arm yourself with a .410 shotgun or a .22 rat shot rifle and do your act at a four metre range. people WHEN I asked the question, ’was there a common virtue required for success in emergency services, Fire and Rescue, life saving and paramedics?’, he thought for a while then quietly answered, “attitude!” Sitting across from me was one of those men we often refer to as the BP type, in other words a quite achiever. His name is Stephen Freckelton, but among his mates he is known simply as Frecko – “that bloke that used to be a Paramedic and a Firey”. Since arriving in Noosa in 2001 he has, over the years been a dedicated member of two emergency services, paramedics and life saving. While living in Sydney, his life, apart from his family was Fire and Rescue. Thus he can now look back on a life he has dedicated to these three emergency services. Like so many good men, the respect he receives from his clubmates in the Noosa Surf Life Saving Club was not given ... it was earned. Born and bred in Tempe Sydney NSW 60 years ago, Frecko attended the Kingsgrove North High School. On leaving at the age of 18 years he joined what was then referred to as the Fire Brigade. “I became interested when I visited the Firies at Campsie while earning my badges as a Boy Scout. On joining I went to the Paddington Training College for 12 weeks, and was then assigned to the Newtown station as a probationary for another 12 weeks. I stayed there for two years then went to drivers school. After that I was posted to Alexandra noosatoday.com.au
Station where I stayed for five years.” Like all people who have dedicated their lives to emergency services, Steve has had experiences that will stay with him forever. “On one occasion we were called to a silo where a man suffered a bad fall breaking both his legs and was trapped some 15 metres above the ground. The only way that we could evacuate our patient was by using the hydraulic platform. It was very awkward and because of his injuries a lot of care had to be taken.” But – when it comes to near misses – a job in Redfern was the big one. “We were called to a fire that was in a six-storey building. On arrival we found that the fire was contained in the top floor. The best way for us to reach the top was up the external fire escape. When we reached the top an inexperienced senior officer wanted us to enter the floor, but our team leader, the station officer said, ‘No – you guys wait’. Moments later the entire floor collapsed and all the floors below went with it. Had we entered we would have all been killed; but we were lucky, and we all walked away.” For Steve, 1986 was indeed the year to remember; he not only met Tracy, the lady who was to become his wife, but also received his promotion to the rank of Station Officer. “Tracy and I met in a night club in Sydney, started dating and in September ’87 we were married. Now we are the proud parents of a 20-year-old son Lachlan, who works in the hospitality industry and is also now a patrolman in the Noosa Surf Club. It’s not uncommon for both of us to be on patrol together, and it’s a good feeling; father and
son working the beach as a team.” Steve’s career in life saving started at Wanda club Sydney in 1994. On becoming a bronze holder he commenced beach patrols and also performed water safety for the Nippers. It was here that he got his first taste of working with the kids and he loved it. “That was back in ’94 and now 22 years later I am still doing it. It’s the best job in the world, and I wouldn’t change it for anything.” However it was in the mid-1990s that Steve – along with hundreds of other firefighters – became involved in an operation that has now become, not only part of Sydney, but also NSW folklaw, the Sydney Bush Fires of ’94. “On looking back over a total of 29 years in what is now termed Fire and Rescue, I can honestly say it was the most unforgettable experience of my life. “Everyone was involved. We had personnel from the Volunteers Bush Fire Brigade and the National Parks Fire Brigade – all called in as back up. Basically what the problem was, Sydney was completely surrounded by this massive bushfire. “It had started in the western region, swept to the east where it virtually hit the coastal area and could go no further. In its movement it completely decimated The Royal National Park which at the time was, the oldest National Park in Australia. It took some three weeks before it could be completely contained. One big massive disaster.” Unfortunately for Steve during these fires he was to suffer what was thought to be a minor physical injury, but years later would put finish to his career.
“While fighting these bushfires we were not carrying breathing apparatus. Police came and informed us that a whole street in Menai was alight, houses were in danger, and they had reason to believe that people were trapped inside. We went in with no apparatus and as a result of the house smoke, I received lung damage.” This later developed into bad asthma which was to result in early retirement on medical grounds. “Needless to say when it eventually happened I was shattered.” But he added with a shrug of his shoulders, “I guess that’s life”. In another incident in January 2000, Steve’s station was notified of a fire starting out on the M5 Highway near Beverley Hills. It was thought to be the result of a car roll over. “As we started to move in that direction we could see, even from 5km away, big columns of smoke. From this we immediately knew it had to be a tanker. This had the potential to be really bad so we called for a six-station backup and also a foam pumper.” What was to follow in the hours ahead was indeed a dangerous situation. As a result of their leadership and disregard for their personal safety in performing their duties, Steve as Station Officer and three others were to receive bravery commendations. “The heat was so bad that it melted all the tar on the road and the road had to be resealed.” Slowly, Steve’s health began to deteriorate, until it became obvious that he could not continue in his usual capacity. “However a position was becoming available at Tweed Heads in early
2000. As this was in Queensland we shifted to Noosa, hopefully to give me a better chance; unfortunately this didn’t eventuate so I settled into retired life in Noosa.” Then in 2003 Steve put his name in for training as a paramedic and was called up in 2006. “In the meantime I had transferred my membership as a clubbie, to Noosa. There I became employed doing part-time surf education with school children. I also worked as a trainer in the senior club, became an assessor and also started doing patrols; sometimes with my son. At one stage Tracy also became a team manager in Noosa so it was a full on family affair.” Steve’s health problem resurfaced in 2014, and eventually, on medical grounds, he was also retired from the paramedics. As we discussed this, the recent assaults against paramedics came up. “I can tell what upsets us,” Steve said. “In modern society there is no respect for uniforms, be it paramedics, nurses, firemen or coppers. Drugs and alcohol are always used as an excuse, but people must be responsible for their own actions. We have to have mandatory sentences and the courts have to come down hard. Support and respect is all we ask.” Speaking of “attitude” as the basic requirement for a successful career in emergency services Steve added, “a certain degree of inner calmness is definitely a big plus”. With 29 years in Fire and Rescue, 26 in surf life saving and eight as a paramedic we can proudly say that Frecko is definitely one of our people.

The long and the short of it THE third annual Surfstitch Noosa Logger surfing comp is set to hit Noosa Heads for the last weekend of April. The two-day surfing competition focuses on traditional log riding with loads of style, flair and control. Judges will be on the lookout for traditional manouevres, style and grace - setting this comp up to be a great show for spectators as well as fellow surfers. The event will run from Saturday 30 April to Sunday 1 May at Noosa Heads with a wide range of age divisions and prizes in excess of

Pumpkin, Chocolate Chip, and Pistachio Crumb Muffins Makes 12 For the muffins: 1.5 cups plus two tablespoons gluten free flour. 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon. 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg. 1/8 teaspoon ground ginger. 1 teaspoon baking soda. 3/4 teaspoon salt. 3/4 cups plus two tablespoons pumpkin puree. 1/2 cup coconut oil. 1 cup coconut sugar. 2 large organic eggs. 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract. 1/3 cup room temperature water. 3/4 cup bittersweet chocolate chips. For the pistachio crumb topping: 1/2 cup almond meal. 2 tablespoons coconut sugar. Pinch of sea salt. 1/4 cup shelled, roasted and salted pistachios, finely chopped.

Method Preheat the oven to 160 degrees Celcius, line a 12cup muffin pan with paper liners. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, spices, baking soda and salt. In another large bowl, whisk together the pumpkin puree, oil and sugar until well-blended. Whisk in the eggs and the vanilla until combined, then whisk in the water. Fold the chocolate chips into the wet ingredients. Fold the dry ingredients into the wet, being careful not to overmix the batter. Using a standard ice cream scoop, portion the batter equally into the wells of the muffin tin. To make the crumb topping, in a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, dark brown sugar, salt, and chopped pistachios. Using your fingertips, mix in the butter, tossing lightly so that all the dry ingredients are evenly moistened and the mixture is pebbly. Divide the crumb topping equally among the 12 muffins. Bake until a toothpick comes out clean, about 25 minutes. Cool in the pan on a wire rack, or serve slightly warm.

Slower food SLOW food could be the answer to an international food problem. Slow Food Noosa president Erika Hackett recently spent time in Cape Town, South Africa, to visit Noosa local Bud Higgins at her charity Tinmugs Africa. “Bud invited me to the township of Overcome. I could not believe what I was seeing: desperately inadequate shacks which lacked sanitation and no running water,” Ms Hackett said. “Bud has made a big dif-
ference to the lives of these people, dedicating her time in providing them with a meal each day.” Tinmugs Africa Trust is a not-for-profit organisation which provides food, care, emergency shelter and education for children. On a daily basis, Bud Higgins can be found working in the slums of Cape Town’s most desperate informal settlements, organising food and humanitarian assistance to vulnerable children. Bud’s vehicle is frequently
packed to the roof with loaves of bread, which she personally distributes along with pots of spreads and packets of meat to poor families in the township of Overcome. Slow Food Noosa is holding a fund-raiser lunch for the charity on Wednesday 11 May at Noosa Boathouse, 194 Gympie Terrace, Noosaville, commencing at 12.30pm. Fins’ show of skills THE Noosa Fins Under 7 team rallied together with coach Roger to defeat the Maleny Bushrangers at their first match of the season on Saturday, 16 April. OneWave win for mental health ONEWAVE is tackling mental health issues with a simple recipe of saltwater, surfing, good mates and Fluro Fridays. OneWave is a not-for-profit organisation which aims to bring people with mental health issues together by encouraging them to get in the ocean, surf it out and talk about it. OneWave holds weekly Fluro Friday sunrise sessions to raise awareness for mental health.
Participants are encouraged to dress up in the brightest outfits possible and surf, swim or do yoga. Head along to the free events held every Friday at Noosa First Point at 6.30am. NOOSA District State High School students will have the opportunity to experience a night like Australia’s 100,000 homeless, sleeping on a piece of cardboard in the cool May air. The NDSHS Interact Club, in conjunction with the Cooroy Rota-
ry Club, is hosting a Sleep Rough for the Homeless Night on Friday 6 May to raise funds and awareness of Australia’s homeless. Students participating in the event will spend the night in the H Block precinct, sleeping on cardboard and eating a 'soup kitchen
dinner’ provided by Cooroy Rotary volunteers. Participants will raise funds through sponsorship from friends, family and the NDSHS community, with the money from the evening used to purchase Street Swags for the homeless. Street Swags are Australian

SPIKY-haired big wave surfer Keala Kennelly made history last weekend when she became the first woman to take out the prestigious Barrel Of The Year award at the WSL Big Wave Awards in California. Keala then made history again with “surfing’s first prime-time queer kiss” - as reported by sensationalist website Beachgrit: “The 37-year-old surfer whipped her arms around actor girlfriend Nikki Di Santo and drank her kisses with gusto.” The live webcast suddenly had more spikes than Keala’s hairdo! On stage Keala kept the vibe going: “They say behind every great man there’s a great woman. But sometimes behind a great woman there’s ... a great woman ... When I was a little girl I didn’t want to be a little girl. I kept hearing I couldn’t do things because I was a woman, women can’t surf big waves ... women can’t surf Pipeline ... women can’t surf Chopes ... women can’t paddle Jaws ... woman can’t get barrelled at Jaws. So who I really, really want to thank is everybody in my life who told me you can’t do that because you’re a woman. Because that drove me to dedicate my life to proving you wrong. And it’s been so damn fun!” A while later, 79-year-old big wave legend Greg Noll made his own unique orally-fixated contribution to the moment with a risque joke about a guy who gets hospitalised with a hairball down his throat (I’m sure you can guess the rest), which he probably should have saved for his local in Crescent City, but in a strange and awful way, the cringe-making jest symbolised how much the social mores of surfing are moving ahead, and not before time. In the course of post-production of our surfboard manufacturers documentary, I’ve been watching a 1960s ABC program called The Boardriders, in which the former British champion Rodney Sumpter (who grew up on Sydney’s northern beaches) says that girls shouldn’t surf because he doesn’t want to see them with muscular arms. says: “You watch a girl trying to surf and it just looks ridiculous.” It would be nice to think that those attitudes were left in the ‘60s, but in fact they’re still around today in some circles, nowhere more so than in the testosterone-filled world of big wave surfing. Our own Layne Beachley was the first woman to bust down the door of the sacred macho temple more than 20 years ago, when Ken Bradshaw taught her to breathe deeply and pull in. But Keala wasn’t far behind, making a name for herself as a teenager on big days in her backyard break, Hanalei Bay. She first hit my radar in 2000, when her dad Brian phoned me in France to ask if I could give her a bed until she got settled for the European contest season. BK and I had ridden waves together on K’aui and the Mentawais over the previous couple of years and become friends, so of course I was happy to. I’d seen surfing photos of Keala but nothing had quite prepared me for the little punk rocker that showed up at our door. She was a
wild child but we loved her immediately. She was soon off to Anglet for a comp, but I recall hearing her let herself into the flat just before dawn after a big night out with a posse of girls, and thinking we wouldn’t be seeing much of her that day. But I was wrong. Guethary got bigger throughout the morning and I remember sitting out wide with Francois Lartigau on our longboards when this urchin with attitude paddled straight into the pack and took off uninvited on a howler. That was Keala. Over the ledge, over the edge, no questions asked. I guess it still is. Love her work. Surfing’s first Pulitzer William Finnegan’s ground-breaking surf memoir Barbarian Days has racked up so many good reviews in august journals of record since its publication more than six months ago, that huge numbers of the literati who would never
have dreamed of reading a surf book have now done so, sending the book as high as number four on the New York Times best seller list. When we toured together in Bali last November, I couldn’t help notice (yes, with something approaching envy) that his work had touched the reading mainstream like nothing before it. Well, as it turns out, that was only the beginning. Last week Bill and Barbarian Days took out the Pulitzer Prize for Biography, the most prestigious award in journalism. Interestingly, the cash prize for the Pulitzer is $10,000, the same amount Keala received for riding that monster at Chopes. I’m not sure how you evaluate that, other than on a personal level. How would you rather earn your 10 large - a year or more thumping a keyboard, or a split-second commitment to a cavernous beast of a wave? Me, I’ll do the keyboard time. Lead me to my padded cell. Winds keep anglers in the river By JACK MANGROVE WITH the blustery conditions last weekend, most anglers opted for the river as the best choice to fuel their fishing addiction. The Noosa River is one of those great systems where there is always a place to get out of the wind. Starting down towards the mouth, anglers were able to put in some big casts with the wind at their backs, trevally tailor and larger bream were all taken over the weekend from the rocks. The dog beach was another great option with whiting the targeted species. Worm, yabbies, squid and prawns were all baits of choice. For the lure anglers, lightweight poppers and surface walkers were also popular. Woods Bays have been really firing, those that fished in the early morning were rewarded with trevally and tailor feeding in the upper section of the water column, lightly weighted baits of pilchards and fresh mullet strips were responsible for some great captures. Around the back of the Noosa Sound and in Weyba Creek the flathead have been on the chew. Soft plastic are the go and brighter colours seem to be the better option. Upriver has also been the domain of the flathead as well as smaller school-sized jew. Look for those deeper holes if you are chasing jew, larger paddle vibes have been working well. Before we saw the increase in the wind speed last weekend, the offshore scene was going off. Sunshine reef has been really firing with a multitude of fish taken from the reef as well as pelagic activity. The reef produced grass sweetlip, pearl perch, brown line sea perch, venus tusk fish and some nice coral trout, while the pelagics were also in play with good spanish mackerel and tuna in the mix. Chardons Reef has also been fishing well with sweetlip, moses perch, tuskies, and some nice jewies coming from the bottom.
Peter Malcolm with a nice cod. North Reef also fired in the earlier part of last week with some great mackerel activity. With the wind speed set to drop over this weekend, I am sure that angler will make the best of the balmy autumn conditions. For the smaller craft, I would be heading for those closer reefs. Make sure you have plenty of smaller slugs as the pelagic are feeding on smaller bait fish at
the moment. For those heading a little further afield, live baits and pilchard floaters have been the go to method. On the beaches, things have been a little tough, anglers that are up early have been able to get in a couple of hours in before the wind picks up for the day. Dart have been prolific along the beaches and have been eating every-
thing from worms, squid, and any type of strip bait. For those that have got a bait past the dart, some quality winter bream are starting to show up. Down around the Coolum area a couple of big jew have been taken with a 15kg fish land earlier last week. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures.

But this was not all, as just two hours prior on the beach at Alexandria Headlands, Noosa’s under-23s boat crew had capped off a brilliant season by winning, for only second time in their club’s 67 years of boat competition, a medal in the finals at the National Titles. It was the silver and justly deserved. At the recent state titles they won the gold and when rowing for Queensland in the Interstate Carnival they again won silver. It was another outstanding event.
The structures of these Taplin teams also are a good indication that Noosa is achieving one of its major goals of creating a family feeling within the club. The structure tells us that in the case of the Taplins, three families - the Burrows the Williams and the Rogers - supplied six of the nine members who made up the teams; and when we look closer it is interesting to note that the majority of medals have come from the youth the under-19, under-17 and under-15; in particular team events.

FOR the Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club, the 2016 National Championships held at Maroochydore were without a doubt their most successful in the club’s history. They finished the program with a total of four gold, five silver and eight bronze medals, and the most pleasing aspect has been that the medals were won in all disciplines contested - swim, beach, craft, iron persons, first aid and surf board riding. On Sunday afternoon the final and most prestigious four events on the calendar where conducted - the open men’s ironman and the open women’s iron woman finals - plus blue ribbon team events, the Open Ladies’ and the Open Men’s Taplin Relays. For the first time in Noosa’s competition history the club was represented in all these events. This was, in the words of Noosa’s surf sports director Peter French: “A really outstanding achievement - definitely our best results ever.” In the Taplin events, an event started by the Americans in 1936, the ladies' team consists of three contestants and the men's six. The event has three disciplines, swim, board and ski - with the ladies contesting each discipline once and the mens twice. When you compete in these events you know that you are automatically up against the finest competitors in the land. Therefore it is every club’s dream to make these finals. Apart from winning a medal the mere fact that your club is on the starter’s line adds massive amounts of prestige to the club’s competitive reputation. So it was that on Sunday in the final results, the ladies Taplin won the silver medal and the men finished in 11th place. To witness the celebrations as the two teams came together at the completion of the program, made one realise that they fully understood what the announcer said when he told the thousands packed onto the beach, “Well done to the Noosa club. Noosa Reds break hoodoo By LUCY WHITEHILL Under 6 Dolphins THE energetic Under 6s will now play two matches each week, giving the boys an extra chance to show off their skills. Noosa Under 6s took on two teams over the weekend, first Caloundra and then Brothers. Both games saw great skill from all players with some speedy tries from Daniel, Cash and Gus in the first game and super tries from Gus, Kellen and Cuan in the second. Under 8 Fins The Fins had an early star with James, George and Rory heading down to Caloundra Light House to back up the Dolphins who put on a great show for a win. Taking out the win over opponents Grammar with a five-point win, Rory took the team home with some balanced running tries, wrong footing the defenders to really seal the game. Thanks to Lee our scorer and all the parents on the side. Under 8 Reds Picturesque Witta turned on a beautiful day as the Reds ran in a comprehensive victory over St Andrews, taking out the win by 50 points. Breakdown dominance turned into points on the board as the hard yards at training started to pay dividends for the Reds. Ritchie had a blinder with ball in hand as did Thomas with his trademark bullocking runs up the middle, Will was dedicated on defence and was well backed up by Darcy and Alfie. Harry showed glimpses of his considerable talent and was robbed of a try by some spirited St Andrews defence. Code swapper Ezekial continues to improve and combines well with Conor as a solid midfield pairing. Tough to choose one player this week but Zac stuck out with selfless ruck clean outs all day long. Will Drake looks for support from his fellow U8s. ponents Flanders with a total of 39 points to zero, but the score didn’t reflect the competitiveness of the match as the Dolphins gave it all they had. Loose carries and getting pushed off the mark in the scrum cost the team dearly although Queen Pearl and her loyal soldiers refused to give up. Under 12 Fins A mid-morning game against St Andrews saw the Fins go down by one try. Two early tries from St Andrews had the team on the back foot for most of the first half and only hard work from the Fins kept it at two with no conversions. Strong contested scrums were
evenly matched boosted by the return of big Jack back from injury. The Fins made a few mistakes but communicated well to regain structure to go into half time with a bit of momentum. Under 12 Reds The Noosa Reds went head-tohead with long-time rivals Caloundra and came out on top after a game that had fans on the edge of their seats. Caloundra has held a win over the Reds for the past five years, bar one exception, so it was time for Noosa to show them what they’re made of. The Reds travelled to Caloundra on Saturday 23 April and put on a spectacular game. It was a close game with Noosa the first to score, but Caloundra followed quickly behind.
Picture: CONTRIBUTED Caloundra scored again and stayed in front until five minutes were left on the clock. Noosa scored a great try and then converted to level the score at 19 all. In the last minute, Noosa bombarded the Caloundra goal line but couldn’t breach their great defence. With only 10 seconds on the clock, Noosa crashed over to hit the front and win a classic match 24 to 19. The coaches, parents and the boys were all ecstatic with such an exciting win. Under 13 Dolphins The Dolphins took a beating from Maleny, going down 43 points to zero but the team pulled together and showed great skill against rather large opponents. The team is really building and just had a slip in defence.
Anzac spirit gives wing to Eagles flight By JULES ROSENKRANZ NOOSA Eagles Soccer Club played their first home game at the Good Shepherd Lutheran College this Anzac Day weekend; it was great to see so many Eagles ranging from ages five to 13 year olds. It was a windy, blustery day but the cooler day was certainly welcomed. This week the Noosa Eagles Red U8 defeated Noosa Eagles Gold U8 five to three. It was a close match up between the teams. The boys have been talking about this game as the one for the season. The reds scored early with Elliot’s (red) goal. Gold levelled the scoring, and it was still tight at half time being ahead three to two. Lauchlan Broadfoot (red) made some great saves in goal and continued to play well in the second half with some great defence. Tyler Lodge (red) was unlucky to not get a goal this week, having one disallowed when he was just inside the circle. Marley Browne (red) had his work cut out in second half and earned his player of the day award in goal. TOUCH FOOTBALL AFTER a short break for the school holidays touch footy is back in action on Wednesday afternoons. The Under 10 division got the day underway with Ice Angels taking the win in a hard fought match with an under strength Lava Boys outfit. Brandon, Eden and Archie all had great games. In a tight tussle the Tornadoes held on to take the game against GSLC with Laicee, Jaxson and Breanna leading the way. Running Rebels lived up to their name and ran away with their match with Fireballs this time around but with the Fireballs never give up attitude it may be a different story in their next match up. Ben, Lily and Pedro had mighty games. Foxy Rebels gave it their best but the more experienced SBSS girls took the points in this matchup in the first of the Under 12 division games with Paige, Mia and Luca looking sharp on the field. Angels with Attitude showed they are going to be tough to beat this season in their win over GSLC. Parker, Ella and Grace all produced stellar games for their teams. The GSLC Under 12s girls still have a couple of spots available on their team for any girls interested in joining this great sport. GSLC (boys) went down fighting against a Knights outfit who took every opportunity that came their way in their win with Jayden, William and Ben showing great play. Both the Sunshine Beach Boys and Speed Demons teams played well in an entertaining match with Sunshine Beach boys holding on. Curtis, Rhys and Jedd all gave strong performances for their team. In the Under 14/16 division the Noosa Babes came out on top in a close encounter with GSLC (girls) with Tenay, Kirra and Emma producing first rate games. Feisty Chicks never gave up but went down to Saints who displayed a superb defensive effort. Dani, Abbi and Emma all showed great skill and determination for their teams. GSLC (boys) proved to be strong of a competition for their younger opponents in NDSHS. It was a tough challenge for the NDSHS boys but they are sure to bounce back next time. Playing strongly in the match were Lachlan, Noah and Jadyn. Hairy Man kept their cool despite being pushed for the entire match against NCC with Jack, Brayden and Ryan showing great skill. On the representative front, after our success at the Regional Championships at the end of February our attention now turns to the Junior State Cup to be held at Hervey Bay in July. This is a huge three day event and Noosa Touch will take over 90 players to compete in divisions in boys and girls in Under 10, 12, 14 and 16. Congratulations to all of the players who will make these teams and thanks to all of the volunteers who are willing to give up their time to referee, coach, manage and support our players, truly appreciated. A NOOSA local has made his V8 Supercar debut taking out a spot in the top ten. Jack Sipp, 21, competed in the Kumho Tyre Australian V8 Touring Car Series at the Sandown Raceway in Victoria earlier this month as part of the Shannons Nationals program. Jack finished the weekend 10th outright and 5th in pro-team class out of a field of 16. The Kumho Series is considered the third tier V8 Supercar Series that allows drivers to gain competition miles in V8 Supercars giving them a platform to move onto a career if they were to succeed at this level. Jack was driving an ex-Jason Bright Ford, which was a back-up car for the first round, as his car for the season – a Holden VE V8 Supercar – was not completed in time. Jack hopes the Holden will be ready for round two which will be held at Winton Motor Raceway over the weekend of the 20 to 22 May. Jack said he is looking forward to the next round as he becomes more comfortable behind the wheel.

All systems go for Walsh LAST weekend, Phillip Island was the location for Round 2 of the Aussie Racing Car Championships held in conjunction with the V8 Supercars. Noosa driver, Ben Walsh, dominated from the very first lap of practice. Walsh qualified on pole position, achieving this for the first time in this category. In race one, he got off to a perfect start and pulled away from the field, win-
ning the race by a threesecond margin. In race two, Walsh again got a flyer of a start from pole position but locked up a wheel under breaking into turn four. This mistake saw him go back to third place, where he worked his way back to the front over three laps, and then managed to pull away from the field and set a new lap record in the process. Race three was a reverse grid race, which meant
Walsh had to start from the rear of the grid in 32nd position. The race was unfortunately cut short due to an accident and only four laps were completed, however, in just the four laps, Walsh managed to pass 23 cars and ended up in 9th position. “It was a great weekend for myself, my sponsors, and my team,” Walsh said. “We were totally dominant all weekend and managed to pull away from the
pack in the first two races which is an extremely rare thing to do in this category. “This result gives us great confidence going into the next round in Darwin and for our hopes of a championship win.” Walsh has now closed in on the championship lead and trails by only three points. Round three of the championship will be held in June in Darwin at the V8 Supercar event.

Firm hold on the gold SEVEN-yEAr-old Isaiah Thinee has taken out the top spot at the Queensland Brazillian Ju-Jitsu Kids round robin Tournament held at Nerang PCyC this month. Isaiah, trained by second dan black belt yoshi Hasegawa, won by a rear naked choke submission to bring home his 17th gold medal to date. Isaiah will compete in the state finals in May.
