Nurses seek action

By KATH GANNAWAY A WEEK’S extra leave is at the heart of an impasse between Yarra Ranges Council and their Maternal and Child Health and Immunisation Nurses.

Decked out in protest T-shirts, nurses from around the shire held a stopwork meeting on Wednesday, 20 April, outside the Council offices in Lilydale.

Council has around 40 nurses on their payroll.

What do they want? According to their placards, they want Yarra Ranges Council “ ... to get with the times”.

“Bring in a Modern Nursing Agreement”, was the message they say will bring them into line with their colleagues.

The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (ANMF) says it tabled the minimum (modern) award conditions as part of a members’ log of claims for a new enterprise agreement in September when the nurses’ existing enterprise agreement came up for renewal.

The Nurses Local Government Award 2015 was upheld by the Fair Work Commissioner last year as being the minimum conditions in local government.

ANMF Industrial Officer, Barry Megennis, said they were advised in February this year that that Council management had rejected the inclusion of the award conditions on the basis it would not be equitable with other Council employees - whose annual leave entitlement is four weeks.

Mr Megennis told the Mail the Council’s refusal of minimum award conditions puts them below par in terms of conditions applying to all other registered nurses and midwives in Victoria.

The implications of this, he said, were that the Council’s ability to secure and keep skilled nurses will be eroded.

“By choosing a different route than the one recommended by Fair Work, Yarra Ranges Council has distanced themselves from the improved work-

Yarra Ranges Council however says they value their nurses, but four weeks annual leave is appropriate when they work ordinary hours and are not required to do shift work.

Director Corporate Services, Troy Edwards, in response to questions put to the Council by the Mail, rejected the suggestion that nurses are worse off under the Council’s enterprise agree-

ment than they would be under the Nurses Modern Award.

“It is disingenuous to suggest our nurses are on minimal conditons,” Mr Edwards said.

“Our nurses are already paid significantly more than what is contained in the Modern Award.”

He said nurses, as are other employees, can purchase leave in addition to their entitled four weeks.

“A number of nurses already use this entitlement to receive five weeks

leave, while still being paid significantly above the minimum salary level,” he said.

Mr Edwards said Council was not legally bound to attach a Modern Award to the Enterprise Agreement, however they are required to ensure their nurses are no worse off.

“We are required to use the appropriate Modern Awards for the ‘Better Off Overall Test’ that will be conducted when the new Enterprise Agreement is approved by the Fair Work Commis-

sion,” he said.

The ANMF says however, that is not a given.

“Yarra Ranges Council management believe their current offer will give better conditions for the nurses,” Mr Megennis, said.

He said the nurses, and the ANMF, strongly disagree.

Whilst not talking to the media, the nurses indicated they would not rule out further industrial action while the Council maintains its stand.

The Yarra Junction Parklands, including the Upper Yarra Museum, came alive on Sunday, 10 April, with music, dancing, demonstrations, market stalls, workshops and the now famous Recycled Fashion Parade.

Organised by ECOSS, the festival is a highlight of the Upper Yarra calendar, showcasing the environment and community groups.

Event manager, Chelsea McNab, said one of the pleasing aspects of this year’s festival was the increase in community groups participating. “There was a big increase in environment not-for-profit stalls which is what we have been aiming for,� she said.

Honouring the fallen

By JESSE GRAHAM HUNDREDS of Healesvillians braved the cold weather for this year’s Anzac Day Dawn Service, gathering en masse at the RSL while stars were still visible in the sky.

Seats were quickly occupied, and the standing crowd filled the RSL car park as commemorations officer, Bob Gannaway, began the service with groups laying commemorative wreaths.

He then spoke about one of the town’s soldiers who served in World War I, James Gordon Harris, who was born in 1886 and lived at Coranderrk in Healesville.

Mr Gannaway said that Harris enlisted on 21 November, 1917, and was posted to the 59th Australian Infrantry Battalion.

“It was with this battalion on July 4, 1918, at the Battle of Hamel, during the advance ... that James was killed in action - he has no known grave,” he said.

“However, his name is honoured and commemorated in the province of Picardy in France, on the Australian National Memorial. “ Healesville High School principal, George Perini, spoke about Frank Oliver Loader, a solider killed during the Battle of Fromelles, but missing for more than 90 years and identified by DNA in 2009.

Yarra Ranges Councillor, Fiona McAllister, meanwhile, spoke about Clifford Ashburner, whose body is buried at Healesville Cemetery.

Clifford served in the Boer War, World War I and World War II, enlisting for the army at the age of 12.

“Words fail me, as a mother of a 12-year-old, to try and imagine what the horrors of trench warfare must have felt to a 12-year-old - yet he still went on to serve two more wars,” Cr McAllister said.

The sun rose following speeches from Healesville High School captains, Ally Melville and Chenile Chandler, the reciting of The Ode and The Last Post being played by bugler, John Stanhope.

In Yarra Glen, residents lined the streets to cheer and applaud the march, led by Dixons Creek Fire Brigade, with Girl Guides’ Rose Morris, Niamh Gilligan and Eleanor Newell as flagbearers.

Rosemary Bowling read excerpts from notes of Lance Corporal Ernst Albert ‘Snowy’ Hubbard, who was wounded by a bomb at Lone Pine, before a performance of The Spirit of the Anzacs by the Yarra Glen Primary School Choir and speeches from guests and school students.

Students from Yarra Glen, Yering, Dixons Creek and Christmas Hills Primary Schools spoke, with Dixons Creek’s Connor Fallon delivering a powerful poem he had written, from the perspective of a WWI Digger.

The day finished up with a hymn from Reverend Jennie Gordon, and a sausage sizzle for the Anzac Appeal, and, for another year, those who left the valley to fight for their country were remembered.

Briefly Crash teen pleads guilty

A HEALESVILLE teenager has pleaded guilty to culpable driving causing death, following the 2015 crash that killed Yarra Glen’s Cooper Ratten.

Media outlets reported that the 18-year-old, who was 17 at the time of the crash, pleaded guilty to culpable driving causing death, in the Children’s Court on Friday 22 April.

The crash on Glenview Road, Yarra Glen, occurred on 16 August, and claimed the life of 16-year-old Cooper Ratten.

POLICE are calling for witnesses to come forward after computers were stolen from an orchard in Gruyere on Thursday, 21 April.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Melanie Woods, said that a farming shed on Gruyere Road was broken into, overnight between Thursday and Friday.

Computers were stolen from the shed, and petrol was siphoned from “a number” of vehicles.

By KATH GANNAWAY IT’S quite unusual for an op shop to have 50 years of history behind it as the Yarra Junction Community Opportunity Shop does.

It’s even more unusual that that shop has been operating out of the same building, right in the centre of town, all that time, and that many of the volunteers of the last 30 years are following in well-established family footsteps.

The OpP Shop team of volunteers got together at Cunningham’s Hotel on Monday, 11 April, to celebrate the 50th birthday and reminisce about the people and events that have been part of the story - so far.

The late Rene Calquohoun was the first person to run the shop which was started by local women to raise funds for the Yarra Junction Bush Nursing Hospital.

Current treasurer, Noella Watson’s mother, Jessie McLeish, was one of the early workers, along with Lois ‘Loy’ Shalders, Mavis Mortimer and many others over the years.

The shop is one of the great success stories of Yarra Junction returning hundreds of thousands of dollars back into community projects from Reefton to Woori Yallock and out as far as Powelltown and Yellingbo.

Car thief in the frame

By JESSE GRAHAM DETECTIVES are calling on visitors to the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie to come forward with information, after a rare car worth $300,000 was stolen from the venue earlier this month.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Senior Constable Rod Newbery has called on visitors to the venue on the afternoon of 9 April to look through photos and videos taken on the day, after a vintage car was stolen from the car park.

The orange 1970 Ford Falcon GTHO Phase 1 was stolen from the car park between 1.40pm and 2.20pm on the Saturday afternoon, when its owner was inside with one of his daughters.

Det Sen Const Newbery said the car was parked at the far end of the car park, in a wide parking bay, and asked anyone who may have taken photos or videos of the car to come forward.

“It would have stood out, and I would have thought people would pay extra attention to it,” he said.

Police said at the time that the thief possibly followed the Seville man to the venue to steal it.

Det Snr Const Newbery said a man wearing a dark green jacket and a black - or dark-coloured - baseball

cap, with sunglasses on top of the cap, was seen driving the car away.

“What I’m really hoping for is that, obviously, as busy as that chocolate factory gets in the afternoon, somebody would have had to have been near this guy when he got in the car,” he said. “(We’re) hoping that someone has obviously seen somebody getting into it, and seen which direction it’s gone, to try and follow it up.

“If somebody, by chance, took any video, a photo, or anything on a phone would be fantastic, so let us know.”

The car was bearing club registration plates, reading 43143H, at the time of the theft.

Det Sen Const Newbery said the car had “$40 to $45 worth of fuel” in it at the time, and so the thief may have stopped at a service station in the Yarra Valley or surrounds.

He said the car had been sighted in the Yarra Valley and Melbourne - but said other similar cars may have been mistaken for the stolen one.

Mr Guy visited the Healesville station on Wednesday 20 April with Eildon MP Cindy McLeish and CFA captain Graeme Bates to inspect the site.

The visit followed another by former-Premier Denis Napthine in the lead-up to the 2014 Victorian Election Dr Napthine then pledged $1.75 million for a new station, should the Coalition win government. Mr Guy reiterated the Coalition’s commitment to getting a new station underway, and called on the Andrews Government to fund it in its coming 2016/17 Budget.

“I’m hoping in ... this budget, they follow through what previous governments had committed to, and that is moving the CFA to a more reasonable location,” he said.

He said that, if the government did not find funding before the next State Election, he would make the station an election issue.

The MPs were led through the station by Capt Bates, who explained that, without changerooms, firefighters had to put on their gear next to trucks, which often covered them in diesel fumes.

The station also barely fit all of the brigade’s trucks, which have to be backed in - and leaving requires the trucks to back and turn onto a busy road.

“The road is a real hassle,” he said.

“All the big boats are taking shortcuts, rather than coming through the street - (they) rocket down the hill.”

Ms McLeish said she had made a speech in Parliament on Tuesday 12 April calling on Emergency Services Minister Jane Garrett to put funding forward for a new station.

But neither Ms McLeish nor Capt Bates said they had heard anything from the government about potential funding.

“It needs to happen, because finding a new location is tricky - it’s not going to be easy, ‘We’re going to do it and there’s a location ready’, there’s a lag time there,” she said.

A Victorian Government spokesperson said the government was “making one of the biggest ever investments in our fire services”, with new stations and more firefighters, among other initiatives. However, the spokesperson did not confirm or deny that the government would put money forward for a new Healesville station.

“Future government investment decisions will be guided by the CFA’s key operational priorities,” they said.

The Budget will be handed down next Wednesday.

I WISH to congratulate the Warburton and Upper Yarra community for achieving the State Government’s commitment to build a new police station for Warburton.

As a former Member of Parliament (Member for Gembrook), I worked with local police, the community and government on this most important community infrastructure to achieve modern and compliant facilities for the occupational health and safety of police; to better support officers to carry out their duties and to improve the amenity of Warburton’s main street.

During the 2010 election campaign, the then Police Minister, James Merlino, and I announced a funding commitment to build a new station in our next term.

Due to the change in government, sadly this did not take place but thankfully now the Andrews Government is providing the necessary resources to keep Warburton, the Upper Yarra and other Victorian regional towns safe.

ON SATURDAY, 16 April, I was waiting for my wife in front of Coles at Healesville.

The carpark was only half full, and the number of people coming in and out of the shops fairly small.

During my about 40 minutes of waiting, I could not help observing the nearby two car spaces marked with Prams Only signs. These two car spaces were constantly occupied, some cars remaining there for 10 or 15 minutes only, one of them for almost the entire 40 minutes.

Drivers of these cars were all women, both younger and older, and none of the cars had children or prams aboard.

Perhaps the Pram Only signs should be replaced with signs reading Sharp Elbows Only parking.

ON Friday, 18 March, a representative group from the Services for Healesville Group met

with an executive group from Eastern Health to discuss the deficits in services provided to the community locally.

The group is focused on the services required by the community and has always had this focus.

This meeting was much more constructive and positive than previous meetings. We felt that Eastern Health was actually hearing us.

Our main agenda items were urgent care, surgical disciplines and maternity services.

We were asking Eastern Health for a commitment to endeavour to provide these services when the hospital re-opens after the capital works are completed.

We are awaiting a follow-up appointment to keep the ideas moving towards fruition.

Recreation plans shaping up

By KATH GANNAWAY IDEAS are emerging for the transformation of the Warburton Recreation Precinct.

A Reporting Back to Community Workshop to be held on Wednesday 27 April will expand on some of the key ideas to date, including junior and older children’s play areas, water play parks, an outdoor cinema and purpose court area, community kitchen or pizza oven and teenage market and journey and destination ideas.

When the six-month campaign to gather ideas for the redevelopment of the land adjacent to the caravan park was launched in December last year, the community group formed to steer it through said the possibilities were endless.

“We have an amazing parcel of land there and we need to do something with it,” Jeff Gill, Warburton Advancement League representative on the committee, said at the time.

“We want to get ideas from people who are interested in seeing what is currently and eyesore into something that will provide a fantastic space for local people and that will make people want to come to Warburton,” he said.

The committee wanted the ideas to come from families, kids, youth and other people in the community and through a number of community engagement sessions held in the street, at schools and at community events over the past four months, the ideas have evolved.

YARRA Valley residents over 40 are being called on to use potentially life-saving bowel scan test kits, available in chemists throughout May. Rotary Club of Healesville members, Dr Ian Tinney and Graeme Chester, are helping to spread the word about the Bowelscan program, with self-tests to be sold in chemists around the valley throughout May. The tests aim to detect indicators from the bowel about benign or malignant polyps, and indicators of bowel cancer – a highly-treatable cancer, if caught early.

Dr Tinney said the tests differ to those previously, and would only need to be used every two years – rather than the annual, more invasive versions sold last year.

“The older kit isn’t as sensitive as this one, and that’s why we’ll be able to get away with doing this every two years, rather than one,” he said.

“Instead of putting the thing right in the poo, circle the dipstick in the toilet bowl itself.

“It’s going to be very much easier for people to do than the old kit used to be.”

“What we try to pick up is microscopic bleeding from the polyps that are benign, before they turn into a cancer,” Dr Tinney said.

“They can be treated just with a colonoscopy, and gotten rid of dead easy – once you get the malignant form, then it is quite a risk.”

He said that anyone over 40 should take one of the tests, and Mr Chester said that, contrary to popular belief, women

should still take the Bowelscan test.

The tests can be bought for $15 from any chemist in the Yarra Valley, and should be completed and returned during May. Dr Tinney said residents should receive the results in about a month.

One day, toilets may become equipped with applications that scan for cancer risks when nature calls, but, until then, the Bowelscan test is probably the best bet.

“However, Yarra Ranges Council does undertake inspection on these trees upon request.”

Mr Edwards said the tree was inspected in March 2013 by a qualified arborist, who “found the tree to be in fair health and structure, requiring no works”.

“On the day the tree branch fell, about three years after the inspection, the tree was subject to near gale winds of 61km/h,” he said.

When asked if the council was liable for falling trees or branches on council land, Mr Edwards said the council “does not speculate on insurance-related matters”.

Mr Edwards said residents concerned about the health or safety of a tree should call the council on 1300 368 333, particularly if noticing broken branches that are likely to fall, trees suddenly leaning with cracks in the soil or roots coming out of the ground, cracks or splits through tree trunks, or fallen trees on public land.

Up and running and delivering big bucks

By KATH GANNAWAY A RECORD-BREAKING number of entries for the 2016 Warburton Up and Running Fun Run has delivered a big return for the local CFA and SES. Organisers presented a cheque for $10,000 to Warburton CFA and Upper Yarra SES volunteers on 3 April, recognising the vital role the emergency services play in the Warburton area.

Up and Running spokesperson Sue Hoffman said ‘volunteers making a difference’ was a common theme between the organisations.

“Our event is totally dependent on the hard working volunteers who plan and run the

Richard and June are members of the Australian Alpaca Association. Richard was for many years President of the Associations Victorian eastern Region and since 2008 has been a Director of Australian Alpaca fleece Ltd, a company formed by the Australian Alpaca Association and a number of Australian alpaca breeders to buy and sell alpaca fleece. It has grown into a vertically integrated company, buying alpaca fleece from growers, arranging for its processing and manufacturing into high quality alpaca garments, accessories and homewares. It on sells these products in Australia and internationally through its wholesale division, based in Sunshine, and its Ardent Alpaca retail outlets.

Richard said alpacas in Australia have come a long way from being just another exotic species. Brought to Australia in 1988 from South America where they have been farmed for thousands of years, the industry has grown throughout Australia.

A HEALESVILLE man is demanding compensation from the Yarra Ranges Council, after his car was allegedly written-off by a falling tree branch.

But the council has said it is not liable for the falling branch, and said the tree was deemed healthy, and was subjected to “near gale winds” during the incident.

Healesville’s Trevor Gottsche is thousands of dollars out of pocket after his 1998-model car was allegedly written-off by a falling tree branch while parked on his nature strip, on Old Fernshaw Road, in early March.

He said the tree had been an issue since 2002, and had been inspected multiple times before the limb fell, damaging a roof support and smashing out the back window.

But Mr Gottsche said after he submitted a claim to the council, things went awry when he was told that because the tree was self-sown - and not pro-actively planted by council - the council was not responsible for the tree.

He said his car was never inspected, and that the tree was later pruned by an arborist, but his claim against the council was denied, and he had to purchase a new car to replace the damaged one.

“It’s just not cricket,” he said.

“I cannot, for the life of me, get over why I rang them, and they said it’s not their tree - why they would come up here a day later and prune the tree.”

When visiting the scene, the tree had been marked with a blue “X”, and many limbs had been pruned away - though the tree roots came up to the surface.

Mr Gottsche said he still wanted to be compensated by the council for his loss, and for the tree to be completely removed.

The council’s corporate services director Troy Edwards confirmed what Mr Gottsche was told about self-sown trees.

“Under the Road Management Act, the council has no obligation to inspect or maintain self-

A shed for the mates

By JESSE GRAHAM YEARS of work paid off for the men at the Badger Creek Men’s Shed, when residents, politicians and local identities gathered to celebrate the shed’s official opening on Wednesday, 20 April.

Casey MP, Tony Smith, Victorian Opposition Leader, Matthew Guy, Eildon MP, Cindy McLeish, and Yarra Ranges Councillor, Fiona McAllister, joined a group of residents to celebrate the shed’s opening, and the unveiling of its official plaque.

President, John Layton, said the day was a “milestone” in the shed’s development, years after setting up in a shed at the rear of the Badger Creek CFA’s land.

He gave a history of the group’s time at the Healesville Living and Learning Centre, before outgrowing the site and searching for a new headquarters.

Fast forward to 2016, and the shed has since been extended with $30,000 from the former Victorian Government, and 25 men are signed up as members.

They now work with Aurrum Aged Care in Healesville to get men to and from the shed, and work on projects

with Badger Creek Primary School students.

“The shed members put in long hours, hard labour to get the rest of the job done - we didn’t always agree on things, but we always worked together to build what we needed,” Mr Layton told guests.

“Today is a very important day for us - it marks project completion, as well as our opportunity to move forward with new and expanded projects.”

Vice-president, Mario Herodotus, then made a moving speech about how he came to the shed about a year ago, after he began experiencing depression and anxiety - side-effects of his then-undiagnosed diabetes.

He said his wife found an article in the Mail about the shed, featuring a photo of Mr Layton, and urged him to sign up.

He did, albeit reluctantly at first.

“At first, I’d come every now and again, and I started coming more regularly,” he said.

“As an American, I had no idea what it meant to be a mate ... I didn’t think mates were a good thing, to be honest – I’d always heard it used in a very negative way.

“I came here, and I learned why Australians are so proud of the mateship thing ... and that’s because without mates, you really can’t survive - and these guys are my mates.”

Mr Herodotus said the shed gave him a place to make friends and talk to them about his issues, and to learn the ropes on the tools there.

“I got to the point where I was confident, and I’m feeling again confident, and I’m feeling again useful, and I’m feeling again like I can be an active participant in the community,” he said.

Following speeches from guests, including Victorian Men’s Shed Association executive officer Ric Blackburn, a commemorative plaque was unveiled, and presentations were made to the groups that made the shed’s running possible.

“If you guys hadn’t been doing what you do, in allowing the shed to exist, then someone like me couldn’t get to where he is today,” Mr Herodotus said.

Play boat sets sail

By KATH GANNAWAY THE iconic boat that has been part of All Saints Pre-School in Yarra Junction for almost 25 years has sailed off into the sunset!

All Saints director, Fiona Borchadt, said a re-design of the playground aimed at making an accessible sandpit for children of all abilities meant the boat had to go.

“The new walk-in sandpit means all the children attending our three and fouryear-old programs can access the sandpit without any adult help,” Ms Borchadt said.

The sandpit was built with a $10,490 sponsorship grant from Upper Yarra Community Enterprise which runs the Yarra Junction and Warburton Community Bendigo bank branches.

Ms Borchadt said while the children always enjoyed playing on the boat, modern ideas of play, where children direct the creative play using natural materials and their imagination opened up new possibilities.

“The educators can change the equipment daily in the space to suit the children’s likes and abilities and the teaching themes for that week,” she said.

“A static playground cannot be changed or altered in any way.”

A $10,000 grant from the Department of Education and Training provided new shade sales for summer play.

“We are very lucky to be supported by the State Government and the local Bendigo Bank to give our children the best possible start to their education journey,” said pre-school president, Gail Pinchbeck.

Being able to remove equipment and create an open space allows for structured fitness programs.

“We can run, jump, hop, balance, chase and stretch in this large, sheltered and flexible space. It’s great,” said Kate Downward from Fresh Air Health and Fitness, who runs a weekly class at All Saints.

Ms Borchadt said the pre-school had been very well supported in their efforts to create a modern and safe experience for the children including a grant from the Yarra Junction Community Op Shop for blinds.

“This will help to keep our building warm in winter and cool in summer,” she said.

All Saints Kindergarten has been part of the Yarra Junction community since 1952.

LABOR’S candidate for Casey has proposed a name-change for the division, writing to the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) with a proposal honouring the area’s Aboriginal history.

Hovig Melkonian, who will stand in this year’s Federal Election, wrote to the AEC on Tuesday 12 April to suggest a name change for the seat for an upcoming redistribution.

Mr Melkonian wrote that while Casey’s namesake, Lord Richard Casey, Governor-General of Australia in 1969, was “an accomplished politician and diplomat”, he “had no connection to the people of the Yarra Ranges”.

He said the division had shifted its boundaries, after starting in Kinglake, at one point taking in Wantirna, before changing to its current boundaries, taking in much of the Yarra Valley and its surrounds.

Mr Melkonian suggested the AEC should change the division’s name to Billanook – “the name given to the Lilydale and Mount Evelyn region by the Indigenous Wurundjeri people”.

Citing the AEC’s guidelines for naming divisions, he said removing the name of Casey would “not significantly diminish the service of Lord Casey”, as the City of Casey was named after him; while the new name also paid tribute to the area’s Aboriginal heritage, another one of the AEC’s guidelines.

The name Billanook is also used as the name of a current Yarra Ranges Council ward – though new wards proposed by the Victorian Electoral Commission will merge that ward into others – as well as schools around the area.

“A new name for the Federal electorate will clear up the confusion and strengthen our community identity,” he said.

An AEC spokesperson said that Victoria would be undergoing a Federal redistribution in late 2017 or early 2018, and that the names and boundaries of divisions would be considered.

“Proposals to rename a division are not considered outside of a redistribution process,” the spokesperson said.

“There will be numerous opportunities for organisations or members of the public to make suggestions about names and boundaries.

“All suggestions, comments and objections are considered as part of the redistribution process.”

A tale of the land

By KATH GANNAWAY THE Memo at Healesville and Burrinja at Upwey are part of a Victorian tour by Regional Arts Victoria of Felix Nobis’s ‘Boy Out of the Country’.

Comedian/actor Jane Clifton leads a stellar cast to tell the story of land, family and belonging that is being hailed as a ‘must see drama play for every regional community’.

The storyline, fusing laugh-

out-loud comedy with high drama, will resonate in Yarra Ranges.

A family property, worthless for generations, is suddenly zoned as part of a regional housing estate to accommodate an ever increasing urban sprawl.

(See!) In the midst of it all, Hunter - the prodigal son - returns home to find his boyhood house boarded up and his mother in a retirement home.

He goes in search of answers in a play that reveals that there’s more to land than real estate, and more to family than DNA. BUDDING songwriters will be given the chance to hone their skills one-on-one with musician Neil Murray at the end of April, as part of an event at Strathvea Guest House.

From Friday 29 April to Sunday 1 May, Mr Murray will be hosting a songwriting retreat at the Healesville guesthouse, working with a small group of guests to improve their musical skills.

He told the Mail that visitors will get a taste of his own musical experiences and techniques, a guide to the principles of song-writing, as well as a chance to workshop their pieces with him, one-on-one.

“I’ll be able to do lots of one-on-one work with people, which is the best avenue for this kind of thing,” Mr Murray said.

“I’m looking forward to it - I haven’t really done a songwriting workshop like this before, over a couple of days.”

The weekend will begin with a Friday night meet-and-greet, with some songs performed

by Mr Murray, followed by a talk and tasks to be set over the weekend.

The next day, visitors will work on their pieces and talk to Mr Murray, with a presentation set for Sunday before everyone

THE Divergent series is showing a frustrating lack of purpose with this third entry.

Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley) is welcomed into the Bureau of Genetic Welfare, an organisation dedicated to preserving the human genome after the apocalypse. But the bureau is not as altruistic as it seems.

Allegiant continues the franchise’s trend of thinly written heroes and unsubtle, blandly evil villains.

Woodley is a great young actress, but Tris has become an extremely generic protagonist with little agency. The film is sluggishly-paced, with a tedious first-half consisting of dry exposition about the film’s world and weak foreshadowing for a civil war in Chicago.

The evolving conflicts have become meaningless, as Tris has systematically taken down every organisation she’s been involved with, and the villains are (yet again) incredibly obvious and heavyhanded.

It’s also disappointing that the series has discarded its surreal virtual-reality set-piec-

es, which were the highlights of the first two films.

The action scenes are wellshot and powerful, there is some breathtaking imagery in here, and Miles Teller is once again a hilarious ray of smarmy sunshine as minor antagonist Peter - but these are all elements that deserve a better movie.

The final act, which finally gives the heroes a clear objective, picks up the pace and has some cool sequences, but it still fails to engage.

Allegiant gets better later, but that doesn’t justify its existence.

Spirit of the Anzacs kicks on ROUND2 remembers and embraces Anzac Day. Three games were played on Anzac Day with ceremonies to remember those who did not return.

Games were played on Saturday in fine weather but that doesn’t explain the differences in scores and results.

Mount Evelyn could not back up their big win from Round 1.

Wandin bounced back and Olinda won in a low scoring affair.

Seville kicked off their season in a nail biter and both Powelltown and Yarra Glen won with big scores.

Division 1 Seniors Olinda Ferny Creek 8.11(59) d Monbulk 6.9.(45) Monbulk hosted Olinda on Saturday and this was going to be a battle of the fittest. This game was really tight the whole day, with no one really getting a break.

Monbulk had a slim lead of two points at quarter time but both teams only managed one goal apiece. Olinda managed four goals to two to take a lead of eight points into the main break. Both clubs were wasteful in front of goal and only managed one goal each again the third quarter. The arm wrestle continued in the last and Olinda held on to win by 14 points. Certainly not a convincing win but a win nonetheless.

Wandin 21.22(148) d Emerald 11.9(75) Emerald came up against a Wandin team on the rebound and unfurling there 2015 Premiership Flag and they saw the Dog off the leash. Wandin kicked eight goals to two in the first and it was always going to be catch up football for Emerald. Another six goals in the second saw Wandin take a commanding 61-point lead into half time. Kicking in front of goal still seems to be an issue for Wandin and they need to rectify this when they come up against the stronger sides. A score of 5.6 in the third to 2.3 had the lead increased to 76 points and it was really Wandin by how much. Emerald needs to regroup and hit the track hard. They can certainly produce better footy.

The first quarter was an even affair with a six-point lead going to Woori Yallock. The second quarter saw a swing in momentum and Woori kicked away with four goals to one and took a very handy lead into half time. Woori continued extending the lead by kicking five goals to four which for Mount Evelyn was a pretty good third quarter but they just couldn’t eat into the lead. Mount Evelyn needed to find something but I think they are still looking as Woori Yallock held them goalless in the last and came away with a big win to see them move to two and zero.

Division 2 Seniors Gembrook Cockatoo 14.12(96) d Seville 14.11(95) Seville played their first game for the season on Saturday and what a way to start. They kicked seven goals to three in the first to have a handy lead of 23 points going into the second quarter. Gembrook clawed away in the second and they managed to hold the lead of Seville to 24 points at half-time. Seville’s running brigade was relishing the wide expanses of Gembrook and seemed to be looking at a first-up win.

Gembrook must have decided they better get serious and came out in the third a different team and reduced the lead to 11 points going into the last. Ricky Causer was causing headaches up forward for Seville and in the end Gembrook kicked 4.3 to 2.3 in the last and came away with a thrilling one-point win.

Powelltown came out firing and kicked six goals to one to take a healthy lead of 34 points into the second. Alexandra chipped away at the lead and reduced the margin to 32 points at the half time break. They were playing better footy but they certainly had a job ahead of them. Powelltown maintained their lead and kicked another three goals to two going into the last. Alexandra rallied but left it too late in the end.

A five-goal-to-one first quarter set the scene for the day. A solid second quarter saw Yarra Glen take a lead of 40 points into half time. Yarra Glen kicked 14 goals in the last half to Thornton’s three and came away with a healthy 113-point victory.

What a difference a week in footy can make. Mt Evelyn were unrelenting with their play on Saturday and never gave Woori Yallock-Powelltown a look in. Woori-Powelltown to their credit never gave up and will see some wins throughout the season. Too hard to predict anything this early in the season but Mt Evelyn were impressive.

The first quarter was an even match with both sides kicking one goal apiece. Upwey hit their straps in the second quarter and kept Monbulk-Seville scoreless while managing to kick 3.3. The lead at half time was 24 points. Upwey kept the pressure going in the third and increased their lead to 36 points. Upwey kept up the pressure with Hughes and Milner stepping up. MonbulkSeville battled on but could not make any headway to Upwey’s lead.

Wandin came out full of running on Saturday, kicking five goals to two. Emerald were always playing catch-up footy and maybe the big win for them last week took some wind out of their sales as they were not in the hunt all day. Wandin were impressive kicking 15 goals for the day and the score could have been greater if they kicked straight, and Emerald could only manage 4 majors for the day.

under the ring. Olinda increased their lead at every change and came away comfortable winners by 41 goals.

Mount Evelyn 36 d Woori Yallock 32 Mount Evelyn took on a new look Woori Yallock today and came away very lucky winners. Woori started off with a healthy lead of seven goals at the first break.

Mt Evelyn clawed their wat back and held a slim two-goal lead at half-time. The lead changed several times and Woori was in front by the slimmest of margins at threequarter time. Mount Evelyn managed some turnovers in the last and got a lead that was going to be hard to get back. Mount Evelyn finally getting the four points.

Division 2 A Grade Netball Alexandra 40 d Powelltown 38 Alexandra went to Powelltown on Saturday and started the game off in blistering fashion shooting 10 goals to four. Powelltown came out inspired in the second and took the lead at half-time by two goals.

That increased that lead to four goals at three-quarter time. Alexandra would not give up they shot 13 goals to seven to come away with a two-goal win.

Yarra Glen 70 d Thornton Eildon 17 Thornton hosted Yarra Glen on Saturday and this was always going to be a hard ask for Thornton. Yarra Glen started off slowly and held a lead of 8 goals at quarter time. Georgia Taylor was a formidable force as keeper and Thornton goalers were always going to find it tough. Yarra Glen came away with another win by 53 goals.

Accolades aplenty at bowls awards night WARBURTON BOWLS A WONDERFUL night was had at the Warburton Bowls Club Presentation Evening on Friday at the clubrooms for the 2015-16 Season.

Club President, Rodney McKail, acknowledged the wonderful efforts of all Pennant Teams with three of them reaching the finals.

He also praised everyone involved for the continued improvements the club has made around the grounds and in the clubrooms.

Students steered straight

By KATH GANNAWAY VCAL students from Healesville High School had a few driving myths busted on Wednesday when they took part in the Motorvation Greenlight Youth Driver Education program.

They also learnt some home truths about their own personality in terms of learning to drive and aspects of driving behaviour and tactics that Motorvation training manager Jennie Hill said were not covered through the usual learner process.

More than 30 students participated in the program which was sponsored by the Healesville Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank and held at the Healesville Football Club Rooms.

The program includes discussion and information sessions with in-car driving and driving simulators.

Ms Hill said while the 120 hours of compulsory driving training is a huge amount, it doesn’t touch on driver behaviour and attitude.

“We’re here to give you this information,” she said.

“Literally, every single thing we say to you today could save your life.”

She said it was about the ‘sheer terror’ moments.

“Most driving is pretty boring, routine stuff, but everyone has a few of those one-per-cent sheer-terror moments in their (driving) lives and it’s about how you handle those moments.”

She told the students that the most likely way anyone will die up until they are 34 years of age is in a car crash and that the Yarra Valley was the worst area in the state for young driver deaths after Bendigo.

A survey to establish whether the students fit a dominant or demure profile as drivers, was revealing - perhaps most of all to them.

Ms Hill spoke of the relationship between trainer (usually a parent) and learner and said the problems usually start when you have a different psychological match up of dominant and

Healesville High School principal George Perini said the Motorvation program had been a great opportunity for the students to understand that road safety is more than just driving a car.

“It’s about those one-percenters that can be the difference between life and death,” he said.

“The feedback from the students has been really positive.

“They saw it as worthwhile and few in particular saw the absolute relevance to where they are in their lives and how this will be useful to them.”

“The school was thrilled for our students to be able to participant in the program with the support of the Bendigo Bank,” he said.

Healesville Football/Netball Club president Felix Fraraccio spoke of the impact of the loss of young people in the community and told the students it

demure - whichever way it goes.

There were some candid admissions from the students around their driving experience and experience with other drivers, and a number raised their hands when asked if they had lost a friend or family member in a car crash.

Some of the myths busted were around tyres, cross-arm steering and how to handle a skid.

“You can have traction control, ABS steering, but if don’t have decent rubber on your car, they are useless,” Ms Hill said.

“Unfortunately most people don’t regard tyres as very important.”

“Who has been told if you cross your arms in licence test you will fail?” she asked.

“Well, it’s absolute rubbish,” she said and went on to explain why.

One of the biggest myths is around what to do in a skid.

He said the club was pleased to be able to assist the Healesville Community Bank, to bring such a potentially life-saving program to local young people.

Healesville Community Bank chairman Bruce Argyle said being able to deliver the Motorvation program to virtually the entire VCAL class was enormously rewarding.

The program is one of Bendigo Bank’s major youth initiatives through their Lead-On youth initiatives, made possible through CGU Insurance.

“This is a great example of what community can do when it works together and as a community bank it is a great example of what can be achieved through the support of our customers.

“Most importantly, if at some time in the future, a single life of one of these young people is saved by what they have heard or experienced today, it will be a high-return dividend to the whole community.”
