Soul shattered

By CASEY NEILL HEARTLESS thieves have ransacked and burgled a disability employer in Dandenong.

Gateway Industries administrator Faye Butterfield said they forced entry to the non-profit’s Progress Street site on Saturday 16 or Sunday 17 April.

“There must have been a horde of them with axes or something,” she said.

“They smashed every office door within an inch of its life so that all the locks are hanging off.

“They did massive, massive damage in here. It’s so uncalled for.”

Supervisor Jeff Pabst uncovered the destruction when he arrived to open up just before 7am on Monday 18 April.

“The windows were shattered, the gate lock had been broken into and the barbed wire was all loose,” Ms Butterfield said.

“We had to close the place down because our guys were so upset.

“We lost revenue for that day but our guys come first.

“The damage was so vicious. It’s horrible.”

Ms Butterfield said the thieves stole a new lap top and a $30,000 Toyota Hilux purchased just two weeks ago thanks to donations from Australia Post.

“It’s fully insured but so many people worked so hard to get the money for that,” she said.

“They took all of our car keys and all of the spare car keys.

“We’re really worried that they’ll come back and take the cars, so we had to go to the added expense of getting the RACV out here to replace the keys.

“And they took our server and our cameras and disconnected all of our internet and everything so they weren’t observed.

“We had to get that back up and running. We have no business if we have no computers.”

Ms Butterfield said internal doors were locked to keep confidential documents secure.

“They must have thought there were millions of dollars somewhere,” she said.

“One of the doors that was hit the most, it’s where we keep all of our vision vests.

“I only lock the doors so that the guys don’t go in and help themselves.

“They got cash but it wasn’t a lot – it was our footy tipping money.”

Ms Butterfield praised police for their assistance, which will include advice on securing the property against future break-ins.

“This is going to cost us a fortune,” she said.

Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Sergeant Craig West said the stolen car had not been recovered.

He said officers were canvassing neighbouring factories for CCTV footage and urged anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Care changes with the times

By CASEY NEILL SOUTH Eastern Private Hospital has changed with its community over the past 45 years.

The Noble Park hospital celebrated its evolution and the birthday milestone with an event for past and present staff on Tuesday 19 April.

Liz Turner was the nursing director from 2001 to 2006 and was thrilled to return.

“It’s a lovely community hospital,” she said.

“It was lovely to come back to the hospital and see how beautiful it looked. I caught up with many people I hadn’t seen since I left.

“It was a lovely thing for the organisation to put on.”

Ms Turner said she loved the people and “the spirit of the place”.

“The team work, people helped each other, they looked out for each other,” she said.

“There’s still a lot of people who’ve been there for many years.

“It has changed, but the hospital still looks beautiful and has a great atmosphere.”

CEO Andrew Blyth has looked after the hospital for the past two years and has worked for parent company Healthe Care for almost 10 years.

He grew up in the nearby Mulgrave/Wheelers Hill area and his father-in-law is a current patient at the hospital.

“I do see our patients and the families of patients as part of our community, and we’re part of theirs,” he said.

“It was previously a maternity hospital back when this part of town was big for new families.

“As our community’s got older, we’ve progressed.

“Rehabilitation is a big part of what we’re doing, and palliative care and oncology.

“The other big change not just in our community but in Australia is the need and the openness to treat mental health.

Brothel calls out fake Facebook prostitutes

By CASEY NEILL A FAKE brothel Facebook page has been sending potential customers to residential streets in Dandenong and Dingley.

Legal Dandenong brothel Garden of Eden lodged more than 200 complaints with Facebook about the Kingdom Come Brothel page to no avail.

However the page was taken down on Friday 22 April after the Journal contacted Facebook for comment.

“Facebook are not following their own standards and requirements and this is really what I’d like to share,” Garden of Eden’s licencee said.

“Let’s hope we can protect a family

from being affected or a young lady from being pulled off the streets by strangers looking for a brothel.

“I feel so sorry for the families who don’t deserve these addresses to be published on Facebook.”

The licensee, who did not want her name published, said the page for the fake business had attracted almost 200 likes and used photographs of international models in its promotional posts.

She attended the address to investigate what she thought was competition and found a vacant block of land.

“Next door was just a normal factory.

Then next door to that was a family in a home,” she said.

“Then two doors up from that there was a young mum.

“It’s residential.”

She contacted the page to let the operator know where they were sending potential customers and warned residents about the clientele that might appear in their street - or even knock on their door.

“You’ve got McDonald’s across the road and you’ve got kids walking home from school,” she said.

“You might have a woman walking to a factory job - what if she gets grabbed?

“Facebook is solely responsible for men attending addresses where families live.”

She said the page launched attacks on her and the Garden of Eden and changed its address to a street containing her name which was in another residential area.

“If I had the money I’d take Facebook to court because of the defamation and slander to my business,” she said.

“It’s obviously some sort of attack.

“I won’t say it didn’t hurt me, because it did.”

The licensee said that businesses in the industry without an SWA number were illegal and not subject to stringent health checks on workers.

Road junction has residents in constant fear

By CASEY NEILL A KEYSBOROUGH junction is terrifying residents and putting lives at risk, a resident says.

Ismail Demiri lives on Cheltenham Road and said the community was “constantly living in fear” because of the Cheltenham-Chandler-Kirkham roads intersection.

“Parents are concerned about the safety of their children,” he said.

“The residents are worried about the big semi-trailers and small trucks, screeching of tyres and sounds of crashes which would make them shudder on multiple occasions.

“It is chaos.”

Mr Demiri said residents also found it difficult to turn left or right into the service road with big trucks blocking the road.

“For 200 to 500 metres, cars and trucks that are turning left into Cheltenham Road currently have the issue of a gravel road that contains big holes which need to be filled, as cars are struggling to drive by,” he said.

“I think it is definitely dangerous.”

Mr Demiri also called for an extra lane on the left side turning into Cheltenham Road and new asphalt, “which would assist in better regulation of the traffic and enhance road safety for school children and all community residents”.

City of Greater Dandenong engineering services director Julie Reed said VicRoads managed the intersection.

“VicRoads have previously advised they do not support the suggestion of adding a left turn at this location, as it would likely result in encouraging more motorists to make this turn,” she said.

“It is preferable for motorists to use alternative, higher-standard routes from the Dandenong Bypass to access Chel-

Stolen cars set alight by thieves POLICE are appealing for information about two stolen cars set alight in Greater Dandenong.

Fire crews extinguished a 1998 Nissan Patrol in a vacant paddock on Glasscocks Road, Bangholme, about 10am on Saturday 16 April.

Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Sergeant Luke Kirton said it was reported as stolen overnight from a Langwarrin home.

Just after 10pm the same day, a woman called triplezero after seeing a car on fire at Jones Road and Hemming Street, Dandenong.

She also reported seeing a man rummaging through the burning car then walking north along Jones Road.

Detective Sergeant Kirton said the CFA’s prompt attendance contained the fire to under the bonnet area.

He said the blue 1998 Nissan Pulsar hatch was stolen from Canberra and police were treating the fire as suspicious.

A DRIVER deliberately ran down two people on a Dandenong footpath and fled the scene.

Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Sergeant Luke Kirton said a car mounted the kerb on Wilma Avenue just after 10am on Friday 15 April.

It struck a 41-year-old man and 29-year-old woman who were walking on the footpath from behind and did not stop.

An ambulance took both victims to The Alfred hospital, the man with broken ribs and the woman with cuts and bruises.

Major Collision and Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol officer joined Greater Dandenong CIU at the scene.

“The incident is believed a deliberate act to run them down,” Det Sgt Kirton said.

“There was nothing to suggest the driver tried to brake or take evasive action.

“There was a deliberate mounting of the kerb.”

He said investigations were ongoing, and urged any witnesses to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Two thumbs up for veterans’ micro beer

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS BEER seems to be a common language, a social conduit for all generations of veterans.

Get three veterans of separate missions Vietnam serviceman John Wells, with East Timor peacekeeper Colin ‘Rowdy’ Rout and Young Veterans founder Scott May - together with the amber liquid and the stories start to flow.

“The equipment and technology may be different, but the stories are still the same,” Mr Wells said.

“So are all the lies we all tell. Talk to me at 4pm on Anzac Day and I’ll tell you I have four VCs,” he jokes.

The three veterans are sampling a Dandenong and Cranbourne RSL offering, a microbrewery-brewed Two Up Beer.

It’s been an initiative of Young Veterans to distribute a craft beer to RSLs, one that ap-

“Everything in defence has to have a meaning,” Mr May says.

As Mr Rout sips from a pot, he recalls a memory from 10 years ago. When a large pallet of alcoholic beverages was accidentally delivered to the frontline in Balibo, East Timor.

“At the front of all our minds was this pallet, but we weren’t allowed to drink.”

‘Rowdy’ says a soldier had to be posted to guard the pallet for several days.

Though he’s a Carlton Draught man, Mr Rout said he liked the Two Up’s solid flavour.

“It’s a heavy beer with a bit of depth.”

Mr Wells, who is the Dandenong-Cranbourne RSL president, says it’s a beer that sends a signal about what modern RSLs are trying to send to younger members.

“We’re a club, not a museum.”

In the first place, at a jumble fair held in the show grounds some six months ago, in aid of the Red Cross, Dr Langley spoke and acted in a way which I looked on as an insult to my wife and on that occasion I had to speak to him about his behaviour.

The result was that I went off his medical list. He has appeared antagonistic to us ever since.

50 years ago 14 April1966 Flying Saucer Mystery: School Silent

What was it?

AFTER more than a week of investigation, mystery still surrounds the reported sighting last Wednesday of a flying saucer near the Westall High School.

Investigations of the report have been hampered by the reluctance of school authorities to permit interviews with eyewitness students and staff members.

Several children attending the school and at least one staff member are reported to have seen the unidentified flying object.

They are believed to have given corroborating descriptions of the object as a “round, humped object with a flat base being circled by what appeared to be light aircraft.”

It was described as grey or silver grey in colour but it is not known whether the object appeared high or

low in the sky or for how long it was observed.

One report said several children who saw the object collapsed and became ill with fright.

20 years ago 29 April 1996 Girls Booted Out THE parents of two Dandenong North girls are threatening to take legal action because their daughters have been stopped from playing junior football.

“We’ll take it to the courts if we have to,” John Van De Heiuligenberg, one of the fathers, said after his daughter was told only hours before the first game that she would not play.

“Have we stepped back that far that we tell girls what sport they should and shouldn’t be playing?”

he asked.

The decision was made by the league after talks with club representatives.

“In bringing in the rule, we were acting in accordance with guidelines set by the National Australian Football Council and Equal Opportunity Tribunal,” the secretary of DDJFL said.

“Our main aim in implementing it was to act in the interest of the girls. Playing in mixed teams after 12 years of age can put girls at risk of long term physical injury.”

5 years ago 25 April 2011 Medals, memories, and moments of reflection ANZAC Day for Tom Dusting is not about celebrating, but remembering.

This morning, the 88-year-old Springvale resident will be joining hundreds of other men and women who have served the nation in a march through the streets of Melbourne.

“When we were younger we used to go out as mad as snakes and play two-up.

“There aren’t many about... we’re all over 80.

“You don’t really celebrate the day. You just think about what it means.”

Mr Dusting said he “will share a drink with a mate of mine who was in the British Commonwealth Occupation Forces. The two of us fought in Borneo and then spent 12 months volunteering in Japan”.

Ordinary men rise to battle DANDENONG AND DISTRICT HISTORICAL SOCIETY HAS RESEARCHED THE HONOURS AND AWARDS THAT DANDENONG’S SOLDIERS RECEIVED DURING WORLD WAR I. TO MARK ANZAC DAY, THE JOURNAL FEATURES A SELECTION OF THEIR STORIES.

Reginald Pickett REGINALD James Pickett was a 22-year-old bricklayer living in Maude Street, Dandenong, when he enlisted on the 23 March 1915.

He was a lieutenant in the 24th Battalion,

Reginald Pickett. which served during the Gallipoli campaign and in the trenches of the Western Front in France and Belgium.

It was raised in haste and received very little training before sailing from Melbourne aboard the Egypt-bound Euripides on 10 May 1915, just a week after being formed.

The 24th took part in the second Battle of Bullecourt in 1917 and suffered more than 80 per cent casualties.

It was there that Lieutenant Pickett suffered the wounds that earnt him the Military Cross.

Harold Ordish DISTINGUISHED Service Order recipient Harold Ordish had been on the instructional staff at the Royal Military College Duntroon before joined the 10th Machine Gun Company of the 38th Battalion on 23 February 1916.

He was 42 years old and married to Ada Jane Brough when he boarded HMAT Ascanius on 27 May 1916 and travelled to France.

By 1 April 1916 he was promoted to lieutenant and by 1 May he was a captain.

When Sir Douglas Haig was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the British armies in France and Flanders in December 1915, he was expected to follow the tradition of his predecessors with the periodical despatches from the front, each detailing the progress of his armies’ campaigns since the last report.

Captain Ordish was mentioned in Sir Douglas’s despatch of 9 April 1917and he was promoted to Major on 3 June 1917.

He again was mentioned in Sir Douglas’s despatch of 7 November 1917 for distinguished and gallant services and devotion to duty during the period of 20 February to 21 September 1917.

He was wounded in the field and in 1918 he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order.

He remained in England after the war until January 1920 and his appointment was terminated in Melbourne on 1 May 1920.

He remained a professional solider and lived in Randwick, Sydney, until his death at age 73.

ANZAC DAY 2016 The citation in the London Gazette said that His Majesty the King was graciously pleased to confer the honour “in recognition of his gallantry and devotion to duty in the field”.

“Though wounded in the forearm, he led repeated bombing attacks against the enemy for five hours, doing most valuable work at a critical time, clearing the enemy out of the trenches on the flanks of the Hindenburg Line which was captured on 3 May 1917,” the citation said.

On 9 October 1917, an enemy machine gunner sniped Lieutenant Pickett through the head and body in the attack on Daisy Wood forward of Broodseinde Ridge.

He was reported killed in action. His records show no known grave.

“Though wounded in the forearm, he led repeated bombing attacks against the enemy for five hours.”

Charles Bellett CHARLES Frederick Bellett was a single, 23-year-old farmer living with his parents on Powers Road, Dandenong, when he enlisted on 1 March 2916 in the 5th Machine Gun Battalion.

He left Melbourne on the France-bound Port Lincoln on 4 May 1916.

His Military Medal citation said he displayed very conspicuous bravery during the operations near Bellicourt on 29 September 1918.

“The locality in which he was waiting with his section pending orders to advance was being heavily shelled and swept by machine gun fire, with the result that a number of our troops and Americans became casualties,” it said.

“Private Bellett, with a total disregard for his personal safety, under heavy shell and machine gun fire, rendered first aid to the wounded which could not have been obtained otherwise for some hours owing the scarcity of stretcher bearers.

“This soldier’s work through the whole series of operations leading up to the capture of the Hindenburg Line has been very brilliant and of a high standard.”

He returned to Australia in July 1919 and lived in the Dandenong and Carrum area.

In 1968 he was living in Thames Promenade, Chelsea, and died at age 81 in 1975. He never married.

Edward Haycraft EDWARD Haycraft was a 23-year-old butcher living with his mate’s parents - the Belletts of Powers Road in Dandenong - when he enlisted on 11 February 1916.

He joined the 46th Battalion, 5th Reinforcement and sailed for France on 7 September 1916.

He received his Military Medal for gallant work in the field near Albert on 6 April 1918.

About 3am, an officer lay severely wounded in no man’s land with frequent bursts of machine gun fire hampering rescue efforts.

An officer managed to bring him 50 yards closer to safety before Private Haycraft - well aware of the danger after seeing four others wounded in the attempt - went forward and rendered great assistance in effecting the rescue.

He then volunteered and helped to carry the wounded officer to the regimental aid post 1200 yards away, under machine gun fire throughout the journey.

His coolness and willingness were exemplary.

During the spring offensive, Private Haycraft was wounded on 11 July 1918 and the same day died from his wounds at the 47th casualty clearing station.

Reverend AC Harris officiated at his burial on 12 July at Crouy, a village about 16 kilometres from Amiens, France.

ANZAC DAY 2016 Norman Greaves ELIZABETH Greaves of Pultney Street, Dandenong, saw her 25-year-old son Norman Leslie Greaves off to the war.

He was an operation porter with the railways when he joined the 24th Battalion on 2 August 1915.

He left for Egypt on 27 October 1915.

Greaves was with the 24th Battalion when it saw major action in France at Poziers and Mouguet Farm.

On 30 June 1916 he displayed conspicuous devotion to duty as a telephonist in maintaining communication between the enemy parapet and his line.

He was wounded under cross machine gun fire but still stopped a captured enemy soldier from escaping.

He remained on duty until the last and was awarded the Military Medal for his efforts.

The wound he suffered sent him to hospital in England and then home to Australia in August 1917, and he was discharged from the Australian Imperial Force on 23 October 1917.

It appears he married Gertrude Mabel Candy at the Victoria Barracks in Collingwood on 21 September 1915 before heading overseas.

He returned to this marriage and had three sons. Gertrude died in St Kilda at age 33 in 1933.

In 1919, Greaves was on the electoral role for Loch, listed as the assistant station master at Woodleigh and apparently single.

In 1922, he appears on the role for Echuca as the station master of Tungamah, married to Gertrude Mable Sewell with a son and a daughter.

It appears Greaves – and Gertrude while she was alive – moved around Victoria in his role as a stationmaster until 1939.

After that, no record of his whereabouts have been found until his death at age 82 at Koroit in western Victoria.

From the Historical Society’s investigations, Greaves seems to have had a way with ladies.

His war records contain letters from two ladies – one in Kent, England, and one in Leongatha who were desperate to contact him.

Greaves seems to have been very attractive.

Army career was a blast

As the 80-year-old DandenongCranbourne RSL member said, he doesn’t need to shake a can to sell badges and poppies for the Anzac Appeal.

Ask him about his story as he sits in his regular spot outside Doveton’s Autumn Place shops.

It doesn’t take long to realise this Hallam knockabout has been a witness to notable history.

Maralinga 1957. Mr Walker was a fresh-faced army recruit, who had just watched the Melbourne Olympics on a CBD cafe’s black-and-white TV screen.

The crackling display was about the size of a modern day mobile phone, he adds with a laugh.

Maralinga was the scene of British atomic-bomb testing at the time. Mr Walker saw four bombs go off from outside the eight-mile exclusion zone.

“You can’t look at it because the flash will blind you.

“After the initial blast, you turn around and just see this massive black cloud grow.

“The mushroom cloud ... It goes up and up and up. You are amazed at it.”

There was only one time when Mr Walker felt shockwaves from these tremendous explosions.

He believes the jolt that rippled through his body had bounced off clouds.

The resulting Royal Commission into testing heard a lot of stories that were “bulldust” he said.

A worldly Bob Walker has many tales to tell.

In 1957, Mr Walker was flown out to the Malayan Emergency – a 12-year guerrilla war in Malaysia.

He arrived in time to be part of a ceremonial guard during the declara-

tion of Malaysia’s independence from the Brits.

It was the longest military conflict Australia had been involved with before Afghanistan. Yet no one here knew about it because it was never

declared a war, Mr Walker said.

Lords in London instead described the conflict as an emergency, to ensure insurers still paid out on rubber plantations and tin mines targeted by terrorists, he believes.

His time at Puckapunyal army base from 1960 seemed to be more mundane. Memories of being “young and single and all the rest of it” as well as painting a lot of stones on hard ground with white paint.

“We had a saying: if it stays still, paint it.”

More than 50 years on, Mr Walker sits patiently in the elements to collect for the RSL appeal.

Most of his contemporaries prefer to work inside the shopping centres.

“I can’t do a lot of physical work but at least I can help out by selling a few badges.”

It’s a charity that helps young and old veterans out in hard times - 100 per cent of donations go to those who need them, Mr Walker points out.

Most passers-by who stop are supportive. The odd person might rebuke Mr Walker, like a woman who told him she didn’t believe in supporting war.

“I said to her who doesn’t! It’s not to help wars but to help a few blokes out.”

Mr Walker tells of support services getting around a returned soldier from Afghanistan whose life went haywire and was living in his car.

“People don’t ask for help. A lot of the time it’s stubborn pride.”

He has his health problems – though he’s quite sure none linger from Maralinga.

There are a lot of blokes who are worse off, he said.

Court bans ice mum

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A 47-YEAR-OLD ice-using mother of three has been barred from her ex-husband and children’s Noble Park North home after throwing rocks through a front window and making a threat to kill.

Dandenong Magistrates’ Court handed down intervention orders banning her from having contact with the husband of 19 years and two of her children after the incident on 17 April.

The day after the incident, police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Glenn Horman

told the court that during an argument, the woman was accused by her husband of hanging out with drug-dealers - though she claimed a friend had rung drug dealers using her phone.

She claimed the man grabbed her by the throat and choked her causing her to briefly pass out, though there were no visible injuries.

Later that day, the woman allegedly returned to the house where a friend of her adult-aged son told her to leave.

She threw the rocks through the windows and tried to climb into the house through a broken

window to attack him.

Concerned about her harming herself, the son carried her out the front gate.

She told him: “I’ll shoot you up or I’ll shoot the house up.”

The accused later told police she’d got upset because she’d been called a drug dealer, the court heard.

A defence lawyer said the woman, who had been using ice for the past eight years, was drug-affected at the time.

She had left home at an early age, started infrequently smoking cannabis at 13 and used ice sporadically, the lawyer said.

There had been 19 reported family violence incidents at the home, the court was told.

The accused had allegedly been a victim of physical violence and controlling behaviour at the hands of her husband.

She’d nevertheless stayed to keep the family together as the children grew up, the lawyer said.

Barred from the home, the woman had been referred to emergency housing services.

“I don’t know if there’s any simple solution for that, currently,” the lawyer said.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen

said homelessness services in the Dandenong area weren’t perfect but couldn’t justify keeping the woman in custody. “(The services) have been part of the problem. But if people are willing to engage they can help you.”

Mr Vandersteen said the woman had no relevant prior history - her offending mainly occurred in the 1980s.

“I can see from the way you present at court that you need assistance.”

The accused was put on a 12-month treatment-only community corrections order.

Land needed for new school

By CASEY NEILL KEYSBOROUGH South school campaigners want a timeline for a new school in the state budget - not just a block of land.

Three Greater Dandenong schools have already received good news in sneakpeaks of the 2016-17 state budget which is to be delivered on Wednesday 27 April.

On Tuesday 19 April, Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams visited Wooranna Park Primary School in Dandenong North to announce a $350,000 School Pride grant.

Dandenong North’s Lyndale Secondary College and Dandenong West Primary School will be among 34 schools to share in $12 million for upgrades.

Lyndale will be able to start planning stage two of its modernisation and detailed planning work will be the first step towards future upgrades at Dandenong West.

Keysborough MP Martin Pakula told Parliament on Tuesday 12 April that popu-

lation projections showed there would be a need for a primary school in Keysborough South.

“I have spoken regularly to the Minister for Education, advocating for land acquisition for a new school for that growing area,” he said.

Keysborough South Action Group spokeswoman Nina Kelly said she hoped Mr Pakula would announce a land purchase deal for a prep to year 12 school in the budget.

“We didn’t originally realise how needed a high school was,” she said.

“We’ve been told by DET (Department of Education and Training) that there’s enough room for a vertical P-12 on the (Homeleigh Road) animal shelter site, with the neighbouring private block.

“But what I want is the land and a date to commit to the opening.

“They could buy the land and sit on it for 10 years.

Cancer kits DANDENONG Rotarians will do their bit to beat bowel cancer throughout May. Trevor Harding lost his 38-year-old niece Debbie Greer to the disease about 15 years ago.

He’s helping others avoid her fate by running a project that offers $15 Bowelscan kits at Dandenong pharmacies during May. Participants post their completed kit for testing, following the directions included.

ENTHUSIASTIC supporters were disappointed when a Dandenong man’s bid to avoid jail time sank in the local magistrates’ court.

The magistrate had a list of concerns about the man who was facing several intervention order breaches and had threatened to set his partner on fire if she called police.

He banged his fists on her car as she fled to Dandenong police station, the court heard.

The man also breached an order protected a second de-facto when he climbed into her house through a manhole.

He claimed that he believed he had the right to go back to the family home even though the protected partner was living there.

“That view will be rectified,” the defence lawyer pledged.

“He now knows he can’t go within 200 metres.”

The judge said she wasn’t convinced the man was filled with remorse, despite him spending the past 10 days in a cell.

“He’s basically saying ... I can do what I like. It’s the victim’s fault.

“This man doesn’t believe any of this is a concern.”

‘I won’t burp’ court told

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A MAN was chastised for burping and laughing as he faced Dandenong Magistrates’ Court for smashing a grandmother’s laundry with a plank of wood.

Joshua Imrei, 23, who was stated to live in the Dandenong area, had been arrested on 17 April after being intercepted with two other males in a car in Endeavour Hills.

One of the occupants had a loaded pistol in their pocket and knuckledusters in his pants.

Imrei claimed he owned a knife in a sheath that was found in another occupant’s bag by police.

In court, his lawyer said the other

males mistakenly told police that the knife belonged to Imrei.

He also pleaded guilty during the 18 April hearing to stealing sausages from Narre Warren IGA by stuffing them down his pants in November.

In December, Imrei allegedly breached an intervention order when he followed his ex-girlfriend into her grandmother’s laundry, damaged a washing machine and then broke a window with a large plank of wood.

Police prosecutor Glenn Horman told the court that Imrei was judged as too aggressive to be interviewed at the time and was assessed by CAT mental health professionals.

Imrei was also charged after throwing

his coffee over his ex-partner and then hurling her mobile phone at Endeavour Hills shopping centre in July.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen asked Imrei’s lawyer if the accused was well, noting that he had laughed and burped during the hearing.

“I’m not having anyone sitting in court burping. It’s discourteous.”

Imrei interjected: “Sorry Your Honour.

I won’t burp.”

The defence lawyer said CREDIT bail reports outlined Imrei’s history of mental illness but the last report stated Imre was in a “contemplative state”.

“He was balancing a correctional order and credit bail (at the same time) which can be difficult to balance.”

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted that Imrei had attended most of his CREDIT bail program but had not been so compliant with the 18-month community order.

He said most of Imrei’s recent offending was late last year, he accepted his complex mental health issues and believed that he didn’t know about the loaded gun and knuckledusters.

He warned Imrei about the possible implications of carrying a loaded gun in a car during a road-rage incident.

“Are you prepared to serve 15-20 years?”

Imrei was remanded in custody for a further community corrections order assessment.

Speaking out at interpreter cuts

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS THERE’S no slowdown in people needing help at a Greater Dandenong emergency relief service, despite it reeling from $100,000 in federal cuts.

South East Community Links has been rocked by a $50,000 federal cut to interpreter services in November on top of a $50,000 reduction in emergency relief funding.

Chief executive Rhonda Cumberland said the cuts hit the most vulnerable in the community.

The service annually helps 10,000 clients with food parcels, financial counselling, clothes and shelter in Greater Dandenong, plus providing up to 10 people with interpreters each day.

Dr Cumberland said the interpreter service was particularly crucial in Greater Dandenong’s disadvantaged, diverse community.

“When people are at their most vulnerable, we want the interpreters to be there for them and not face problems on their own.”

Bruce ALP federal candidate Julian Hill visited the service recently with Hotham MP Clare O’Neil and opposition assistant treasurer Andrew Leigh.

He said the cuts had been felt more acutely in the region with the removal of Springvale Benevolent Society’s $70,000 federal emergency relief funding.

The interpreter service cuts were equivalent to the loss of 1000 sessions a year.

“It’s so upsetting to suffer yet another attack by the Abbott-Turnbull government on the most vulnerable, coming on top of already cruel cuts to emergency relief funding.

“Cutting access to interpreters forces services to dip into emergency relief funding and unfairly impacts on our community as Dandenong”.

The service is a recent amalgamation of Southern Ethnic Advisory and Advocacy Council as well as the Springvale and Dandenong community advice bureaus.

It’s seeking active men and women to sign up as CFA firefighters, but captain Terence Sanford said the role was about more than just flames.

He said they’d also help with important community education programs, promotions and displays, fund-raising and administrative activities.

Captain Sanford said all CFA volunteers received nationallyaccredited training and developed skills they could also use in the workplace or at home.

“Volunteer membership offers new members fresh challenges as well as a chance to meet new people and give something back to their local community,” he said.

Call for quick decision

By CASEY NEILL A DECISION on closing Abbotts Road needs to be fast-tracked to give businesses certainty, Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams has said.

On 1 April she asked the Level Crossing Removal Authority to prioritise investigations into ‘the Remington Drive option’ for removing the Dandenong South level crossing.

It’s one of five options on the table, but the only one that would close Abbotts Road and build an overpass linking Remington Drive with Pound Road West as an alternative route.

“I am conscious that some businesses may have leases and other contractual arrangements coming up for decision and this option may have an impact on those decisions,” Ms Williams said.

“If it doesn’t stack up, it’s better they

take it off the table sooner rather than later so businesses have certainty and so we clear the air for feedback on the other four options.”

Ms Williams said it was clear that closing Abbotts Road was causing anxiety among the business community in the immediate area and consultation feedback needed to be assessed quickly.

Trish Bull from Arco Restaurant, off Abbotts Road, said the business would be

forced to close its doors if Abbotts Road was closed.

“Sadly, jobs will be lost,” she said.

“It’s a very worrying, stressful and uncertain time for our staff, some who have been here for eight years and are supporting young families.

“They need and must be factored into this debate.”

The Bangholme school received a thankyou for its commitment to soft plastic recycling from Sustainability Victoria waste and resource recovery programs director Jenny Pickles on Tuesday 19 April.

Ms Pickles also helped the parents’ association to present a Buddy Bench made from the equivalent of 21,250 pieces of plastic packaging.

Other guests included National Packaging Covenant Industry Association (NPCIA) CEO Trish Hyde, Mordialloc MP Tim Richardson and City of Greater Dandenong councillors Angela Long and Matthew Kirwan.

They heard from students about their recycling initiatives.

The Cornish College Make A Difference (MAD) leaders wanted to create a welcoming space on the campus to help foster friendship in the playground.

They came up with a plan to install a Buddy Bench - a seat where students could meet up with their friends before going to play and make new friends along the way.

The MAD leaders, Sustainability leaders and EcoKids wanted the bench to be made from a sustainable material.

It might contain some soft plastic that students have collected through participation in the REDcycle Program.

Empty bread, cereal and frozen food bags, plastic shopping bags and more can be dropped at participating schools, supermarkets or other drop-off points.

It’s delivered to Carrum Downs-based manufacturer Replas where it’s used in fitness circuits, signage, sturdy outdoor furniture and more.

“Through the program, we can keep significant quantities of soft plastics out of landfill and give them another life, such as in this Buddy Bench,” Ms Pickles said.

Cornish College principal Vicki Steer said the school was delighted to be involved in a program that involved not only the school community, but the wider community.

“Our vision of sustainable living is all-encompassing and includes not only environmental concerns, but personal, socio-cultural and urban/technological dimensions as well,” she said.

Injuries drive up claims GREATER Dandenong workers made almost 1500 WorkCover claims last year, new figures show.

The total of 1469 was the highest of all metropolitan local government areas after Melbourne.

The highest number of injury claims came from manufacturing (558), wholesale trade (215) and construction (134).

Most injuries were musculoskeletal (546), and the leading causes of injury were poor manual handling (656), slips, trips and falls (240) and being hit by a moving object (236). Maurice Blackburn Lawyers senior associate Emily Anderson said the figures could partly be explained by the high rate of industry and manual workers in Greater Dandenong.

“However, they also indicate that not enough is being done by employers to ensure that Dandenong workplaces are safe,” she said.

“Although the number of claims is down slightly from 2014, it is still alarmingly high and serves as a stark reminder about the importance of workplace safety.

“Local employers need to take greater care to protect manual workers, who are at increased risk of suffering serious injury at work.”

Record for ‘small’ feat

By CASEY NEILL A DANDENONG North man has dedicated his new miniature shoe collection record to his late mum.

Wilson Fernandez started collecting the miniatures during a trip to India about 10 years ago.

He now has more than 1000 and is listed in Limca Book of Records (LBR) for 2016.

“I had a mixed feeling when the record news came through,” Mr Fernandez said.

“It is a great honour to achieve this award. I just couldn’t believe it.

“But at the same time, my heart shattered as my dearest mum passed away.

“I didn’t get the opportunity to share the joy of this achievement with mum.

“So, I dedicated this achievement as a tribute to my mum for the love, encouragement, support and for making me the person that I am today.”

Mr Fernandez said his dad was proud of the award, and thanked the family and friends who’d helped him to achieve “this hallmark of my life”.

“I am proud of it and regardless of this award, my collection of miniature shoes will continue to grow.”

Mr Fernandez’s first miniature shoe purchase was “small leather sandals in miniature sizes that replicated the big ones exactly”.

“They were called Kolhapuri Chappal. I was so amazed to look at the details and the craftsmanship of these miniatures,” he said.

“She handed it to me with a look and reminded me of the day I was so carried away with those miniature shoes,” he said.

“Over the years, during my business and pleasure travels to

new places, I started looking for shoes that represent the countries and places I visited.”

The smallest pair is about three by five millimetres in size.

“The wall of great miniature shoes reminds me of the places visited, the best moments of those places, the culture, diversity, friendship and more,” he said.

Clear to see risks A NEW eye health program is coming to Greater Dandenong with a view to target vision loss.

Vision 2020 Australia’s Vision Initiative will focus on sight in the municipality over the next two years, along with the City of Brimbank, the shires of Campaspe and Swan Hill.

The areas have all been identified as communities at increased risk of eye disease and will receive individually targeted initiatives, ranging from training for primary health professionals to educational materials and eye health awareness campaigns.

Vision Initiative’s aim is to eliminate avoidable blindness and vision loss and it’s been piloted in Darebin, Greater Geelong, Greater Shepparton and Latrobe since 2012.

Research shows that 75 per cent of vision loss is preventable or treatable.

Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said the program would help Greater Dandenong residents to take control of their eye health and support them to have regular eye tests.

“This targeted support will ensure people at greater risk of eye disease in our local community will be able to access the information, care and treatment they need, when they need it,” she said.

Agony and ecstasy to win

By JARROD POTTER THE agony of injury is only temporary but as Bambino Moukassa Mbani found out recently – the glory of a state championship victory is set to last a lifetime.

Shin splints made even small steps a frustrating challenge let alone the high-flying leaps that earned Moukassa Mbani a Little Athletics Victoria state track and field gold medal last month.

Moukassa Mbani had to dig deep just to get into the high jump final but persevered to clear 1.69 metres and take the title.

The under-14 Springvale Little Athletics Centre (SLAC) dynamo had only participated in the field events as a warm-up for his great sprinting passion.

But he was proud of his efforts throughout the carnival, especially in the high jump.

“This medal was really amazing – I’m really proud,” Moukassa Mbani said.

“High jump on Sunday I did really well and got a gold medal – I did really well and was really happy.

“I’m not usually a high jumper, so I knew I might medal but not first – there was another guy who was taller than me and stuff.

“But I didn’t let it intimidate me and it doesn’t matter if they’re tall, ’cause they might not be able tojump.”

Putting the pain aside to jump his way into the history books, Moukassa Mbani skipped jumps and planned his path to victory expertly as he now re-

covers and prepares for cross country season.

“I’ve been suffering from them for a few months now so we’ve gone to see the physio and I’m getting proper treatment now,” Moukassa Mbani said.

“But I was jumping and running really injured – I was so sore – but I just said to push through the pain and it was really tough, I reckon a nine out of 10 level of pain.

“Keep training hard and smash it up next year as I think I’ll do really well as I was away for a few months and just came back, got back into training and the balance wasn’t really right.”

What’s even more pleasing in retrospect is Moukassa Mbani has plenty more left in the tank – as he leapt nearly 1.80m in the regional events leading

up to the state championships at Casey Fields.

“It was around 1.70 – that wasn’t my best but I’m pretty happy with that jump that I qualified first and wasn’t expecting it,” Moukassa Mbani said.

“I think I jumped better in regionals where I got 1.79m and in state I got 1.70m “I was focusing and praying in my mind and telling myself just to go there and do it – it doesn’t really matter if you lose or win as I see out another year.

“For now I know what I’m actually going up against next year and I’m looking forward to training hard over winter.”

He also earned a bronze medal in the triple jump to cap off a stellar campaign at the state championships.

STUDENT-ATHLETES often get a bad rap in the American college system.

The common complaints are they’re not interested in studying, they’re only at the school to play and only care about the athletic side of campus life.

But one woman shattering those notions– and more – is Dandenong Rangers alumnus Kiara Phillips.

Phillips, 21, from Narre Warren South, is the ultimate student-athlete; excelling in her academic and athletic life at Norfolk State University, in Virginia, USA. Her numbers don’t lie on either side of the student-athlete divide, especially for the just completed 2015/16 campus year.

As a student she has a 4.0 grade point average (GPA) studying sociology – effectively a perfect year in American education standards.

Add to that her on-court averages – 7.4 points and nearly two assists and a steal per game as a junior – and it’s clear she’s not just excellent with a basketball or pen in her hand, but also extremely well organised.

“It hasn’t been easy for sure,” Phillips said. “I am a very organised person who keeps a daily calendar on my phone, in my hand and on my MacBook.

“I spend quality time with my other half Jonathan Wade a lot and we usually study together, but definitely staying organised and maintaining a high level of work ethic is on the top of my list to ensure I maintain a great GPA.” Shifting from Australian basketball to the college arena has been equally as challenging, but Phillips – a three-time national champion as a Dandenong junior – wants those tough tasks and difficult prospects.

It makes her better after all – that’s her number one aim, not the stats.

“Most definitely, the style is very different,” Phillips said. “The college atmosphere there is no comparison and the school rivalry is impeccable.

“I thrive in environments like that and it actually makes me play better and I would definitely tell anyone person that is looking to play at the college level and excel in

FFA CUP VICTORIAN QUALIFIERS - ROUND 5 ALL hope now lies with Dandenong City after the remaining local sides were thrashed, bashed and beaten in the latest round of FFA Cup qualifiers.

The local force had a dreadful Wednesday night as Dandenong Thunder, South Springvale and Endeavour Hills Fire all exited the elimination competition.

Dandenong City booked its place in the last 16 with a 3-0 demolition of Mooroolbark.

Ash Cattermole (26’) opened the City accounts before Jarod Blackbourn (45+1’) put another in the back of the net approaching the half.

Nothing the hosts could muster managed to stop the resurgent City side, with the icing put on

by Anthony Cassar (87’).

A youthful Thunder line-up – with coach Huss Skenderovic leaving most of the side’s experience on the sidelines – were no match for Hume City in the 1-3 defeat.

Thunder’s hopes of advancing – for the first time since its Dockerty Cup win in 2012 – were dashed early by former clubman Shane Rexhepi (6’), who slotted the first for Hume City from a header before Joseph Franjic (40’) doubled the margin before the half.

Veton Korcari (45’) brought it back by one from the penalty spot, but another for the visitors proved the nail in the Thunder coffin to give the side its first loss of 2016.

South Springvale’s hope for returning to the national round-of-32 was dashed as Avondale FC thumped Aris 5-1.

After a closely fought clash through the first half, as South Springvale only conceded one goal to Avondale’s Vojislav Milojevic (44’), the floodgates opened after the main break.

Avondale’s Oleksiy Khrapko (60’, 64’, 67’) smashed a hat-trick in less than 10 minutes to kill off Aris’ chances.

Equally punished was the low man on the totem pole Endeavour Hills Fire.

The Fire was doused emphatically by highflying Kingston City in a 0-8 romp.

Nothing went right for the Fire, who lost Bujar Thaqi to a red card in the 19th minute after a scuffle, before Mahesh Jeetoo’s careless attempt on Mouad Zwen saw the second red for the visitors.

With only nine men on the park the result was all but sealed after the two send offs as Kingston City racked up an eight-goal massacre.

Our other remaining local side – Doveton SC will battle FC Bulleen Lions on Wednesday night at the Venuto Club from 8.30pm with a spot in the last 16 on the line.

Round-of-16 clashes are scheduled for the week of 22 May.

“Basketball is something I have played almost my entire life and I thank God for giving me the talents both on and off the court.”

Her on-court highlight this season was nailing 21 points against Howard University to give Norfolk a 110-108 double over-time triumph – which she dedicated to her team mate Amber Brown, who is currently battling illness.

“It has been a very challenging season with Amber Brown, my former team mate, fighting for her life,

a brand new coaching staff with 10 games left in the season to go, but I never lost faith,” Phillips said.

Phillips wants to finish her college basketball on a strong note– same as her studies – achieving accolades and proving to everyone around her that she belongs in the top echelon on and off the court.

“I want to walk away and prove to people that ever doubted me and my ability that I did it, I made it and made a huge difference,” Phillips said. “Going into my senior year I want to be MEAC player of the year, make all conference first team and

just get the most out of the year with minimal injuries as possible.

“I love my haters – that is why I am over here excelling at the highest level both on and off the floor.

“It was probably the best decision I ever made honestly and I have zero regrets leaving Australia but the only thing is I wish my family was here too.”

She wanted to thank her boyfriend Jonathan, her family, Monica Wright and God for always believing in her and helping her reach the place she is today.

Bulls bury the Norsemen

By JARROD POTTER GREATER DANDENONG FOOTBALL REVIEW - ROUND 3 PUTTING a big scalp on its early-season mantle, Noble Park held off the fast-finishing Norwood to claim an emphatic 13.11 (89) to 8.13 (61) EFL triumph.

Even with a host of big outs - Will Petropoulos, Sean Corrigan, Jackson Sketcher, Piva Wright and Luke Cody - the Bulls had more than enough in the tank to see off the visitors.

Hard fought and attritional at the best of times, neither side gave an inch through the first stanza with only two goals booted, one of which was a special effort down the flank from 17-year-old Jordan Marson.

The shoot-out through the second term - led by the likes of Kyle Martin (four goals) and Ziggie Alwan (three goals) - kept the game well in the balance at the half, but when the points were there to be taken, Noble Park stood up.

The run-and-carry efforts of Kevin Kean, Mitch Gent and Tyson Mitchem gave plenty for the forwards to savour, while the skipper Sam Monaghan relished his huge task in the second half manning Matthew Bate.

Another to shine defensively was Ryan Morrison - who has taken to last-line duties with gusto at the Bullring and alongside Trent Robertson made sure Norwood didn’t have an easy time of it inside-50.

There was one last gasp from the Norwood faithful - booting a couple of quick goals in the last term to keep things interesting - but it was not enough as the behinds, instead of majors, piled up rapidly.

The Bulls settled through goals to Shayne Allan and Alwan to stamp out the dying embers of Norwood’s fightback.

In SFL, Springvale Districts had to fight tooth and nail to overcome Skye 7.6 (48) to 5.5 (35), with Lachlan Morrey (three goals) and Brad

Dight (two goals) sharing the forward work load while Billy Green, Sam Blackburn and Jack Allender also featured in the best.

Keysborough’s credentials took another battering, as the Burra was belted by Port Melbourne Colts to the tune of 114 points. Ruckman Bryce Sutton (three goals) went forward to create something for the visitors while Danny Morland and Brandon Mather also flew the flag.

There’s a great local flavour to top of the SFL 3 ladder, with Doveton Eagles, Hallam, Lyndale and Endeavour Hills all flying high.

Hallam is undefeated after a nail-biting ninepoint win over Moorabbin. Phillip Ward (five goals) and Shane Thomas (four goals) presented all day via the midfield work of Matt Neve and Manny Peresso. Dandenong Stingrays alumnus Jayden Bubb made his Hallam debut, dominating in the ruck as Frankston Dolphins had a development league bye.

Doveton Eagles punished the visiting Lions to the tune of 115 points as Peter Dye (five goals) continued his forward-line rampage. Enayte Samadi, Brett Hidgcock and Steven Stredwick were best afield.

Endeavour Hills pecked away at Lyndhurst to take a comfortable 12.19 (91) to 4.5 (29) triumph on the back of hard work from Shaun Richards, Nick Gay and the multiple goal-kickers Nathan Strom (three goals), Shane Peake (three goals) and Cedric LeGrand (two goals).

Lyndale thrashed Sandown by 81 as Trevor Kumetaitis (nine goals) filled up a bag and then some. Kane D’Atri, Jordan Waite (three goals) and Sandringham Dragon Perry Lewis-Smith were in the best for the Cobras.

Dandenong was gallant against South Yarra, downed 8.7 (55) to 11.14 (80) as Jarod Van Mourik generated plenty of touches alongside Ali Hussani (three goals) and Stephen Young (two goals).

Springvale White Eagles dandy win

There’s no love lost between the cross-town NPL 2 East sides, as the next instalment of their intense rivalry went down to the wire on Saturday afternoon.

The outcome was decided in the last 15 minutes; while White Eagles had surged throughout the afternoon - troubling the City defenders and keeper Damir Salcin - the hosts only found the net in the dying stages.

Erdem Ozcagi was solid in defence alongside Springvale skipper Dejan Erakovic while Damir Stoilovic threatened to add an eighth goal to his season tally as he worked well up forward.

City attacked just as much and had a couple of near-misses as Gonzalo Freddi had a one-on-one through ball which he couldn’t get a foot on, while Andy Jerez and Shaun Filipovic generated opportunity across the afternoon.

The final flourish came from 18-yearold Isiah Joseph (77’) who found the back of the net to give White Eagles the points and push season back on track.

“It was very good - very exciting for the boys,” Springvale White Eagles technical director Gary Talbot said. “I think they played quite well - did all the things they were asked to do - pushed hard and pressed hard.

“Great atmosphere and it’s what’s needed to give the club that little bit of a lift and get some of those old supporters to come back down.”

City was well served by Halil Gur at the back and Freddi in attack while Dario Matkovic had his head over the ball all day and copped a few whacks in the process.

“That’ll be a tough game against Moreland Zebras - they’re sitting on top of the other conference- but I’m sure the boys will rise to the challenge,” Talbot said. “We’ve been unlucky early in the season - either in front or level going into the 90th minute and the game turns around in the final few minutes.

“If we get those points, things would be a lot different and confidence would be a lot higher, but we’re still pushing ahead.”

Dandenong Thunder played Kingston City on Monday night in a first-versussecond showdown.

Thunder will travel to Moreland City this week on Saturday while Dandenong City hosts Sunshine George Cross.

In the state leagues, South Springvale’s horror season continued with a 0-3 loss to Manningham United.

Springvale City held on for a 2-2 outcome against Bayside Argonauts, while Harrisfield Hurricanes suffered a threegoal loss against Skye United. Chelsea FC rounded out the local results, destroyeing White Star Dandenong 6-1 in their State League 5 South clash.

TAC CUP - ROUND 4 BATTERED, bruised but most importantly, not beaten.

Every obstacle was thrown at the Dandenong Stingrays, as unavailable players and injuries forced them to run it out two-men down .

With its depth well and truly tested in a trying day on-field, the result speaks for itself as Dandenong fought back against NSW/ACT to take its fourth win from as many TAC Cup starts in the 15-point win.

Callum White (hamstring) and Mason De Wit (finger) left the game early and tested the fitness limits of the Stingrays’ cadre. But it didn’t affect the Stingrays’ surge through the opening stanzas, but smooth sailing to rough seas in the blink of an eye at Frankston Park, Dandenong was coasting at times as the challenges proved minor distractions through three-quarter-time as Dandenong built a 13-point lead on the back of exceptional work from the three Toms - Thomas Jok, Tom De Koning and Tommy Glen.

and versatility. Now a fixture inside the Stingrays’ centre, Glen had countless clearances and racked up the stats to give the gaggle of recruiters plenty to jot down and take back to their AFL clubs.

Blake to take shot at Big V

By JARROD POTTER TAKING his game to new levels, local basketballer Blake Taylor is on the fast-track to success after earning his first major Victorian jersey.

The long-time Casey Cavaliers player made the switch to Dandenong Rangers Under 16s team in recent seasons and has loved every second at his new club.

That switch has opened the door for Taylor, including his side qualifying for the Victorian Championship and being on the verge of qualifying for the National Junior Classic, and helped him move towards the Big V. He’ll trade the Dandenong jumper for a representative jersey though - as Taylor, 14, Narre Warren South, will represent Victoria’s metropolitan region later this year.

Such is the two-guard’s talent that he’s been picked for the Basketball Victoria Under 16 Vic Metro team, set to head off to Kilsyth for the Under 16 national championships in July.

“I’d made other Vic Metro teams, but they’re more development teams I guess and not a state team as such,”

Taylor said. “I’m pretty proud - it’s obviously a big accomplishment and an honour to be in the team really.”

“I’m a shooting guard, two man, and basically a shooter – sit me in the corner – love to shoot from the corner – and occasionally when needed I run the point guard or three-man, but mainly the two.”

With a power packed arsenal assembled from across the state, Taylor believes the Vic Metro squad has enough in the tank to bring another title back to Victoria.

“It’s a good group of kids and we’ve got a fairly good team chemistry and should do quite well I think,” Taylor said.

In 2015 he made the switch to the green-and-gold and everything is going peachy for the junior guard, who thinks the side is capable of making the Classic.

“I kind of wanted a change, play with some other players as Dandenong has some great players I wanted to play with,” Taylor said. “We’re hoping to go to the Junior Classic – sitting fourth or fifth in the pool – there’s a little bit more to go but fingers crossed.”

The awards recognise the exceptional contribution by clubs, teams and individuals who work within the Greater Dandenong community.

There are nine categories recognising athletes, coaches, volunteers, teams and sports clubs which are working hard to achieve in their own fields and increase participation opportunities across the community.

The awards provided a great platform for last year’s joint Sports Volunteer of the Year award winner, Tracey Walden.

Tracey went on to become the City of Greater

Dandenong’s Australia Day Volunteer of the Year as well as being named a finalist in the Vic Sport Awards as Sports Administrator of the Year.

Junior Sports Athlete of the Year Aaliyah Corles also went on to win an Australia Day Award as athlete of the year.
