HAND-MADE red poppies will adorn the uniforms of more than 500 Warwick West State School students next Friday, when they gather to formally commemorate Anzac Day at their school assembly.

But it is the story behind purple poppies that will be one of the highlights in a week of commemoration activities at the school.

Teacher Sue Higgins, who is also the school librarian, already has an impressive Anzac Day display, welcoming students and visitors to her library. There are a number of selfpaced individual activities to get students thinking about Anzac Day. “Next week’s class library lessons will focus explicitly on Anzac Day to make sure our younger generation understands and continues the legacy of the Anzac story, but some of our learnings will be on the significance of the purple poppy,” she said.

The purple poppy badge honours the animals who served to protect our country and give comfort and companionship to their handlers and soldiers.

It is worn alongside the traditional red poppy.

“We expect the children to be very interested in the ‘why’ of the purple poppy, and on Thursday’s parade they will hear from a guest speaker Justin Hudson on the military use of animals during World War II, specifically the use of pigeons,” she said.

Black spot pool scooped by us THE Southern Downs' worst road spots are about to be upgraded to the tune of $1,375,900, thanks to latest round funding from the Federal Government’s Black Spot Program.

Southern Downs Regional Council Mayor Tracy Dobie said the funding announcement by the Australian Government last week was welcomed, and would provide a considerable boost to capital works budget for the 2016/'17 financial year.

“Council’s engineers applied for 15 projects under the 2016/'17 Black Spot Program, and we have been successful in gaining funding for all 15 projects,” Cr Dobie said.

“This is a significant achievement when you consider that 89 projects across Queensland were approved for the funding, 15 of which are in the Southern Downs region.

“Importantly, the Black Spot funding does not require any matched funding or contribution from council.

“The Black Spot funding will enable council to continue implementing important engineering measures aimed at improving road safety across the region, particularly in those locations where we know road crashes are occurring, and will hopefully lead to a reduction in the national road toll.

“Feedback from the Australian Government is that the

success of council’s funding applications was due to the very high quality of applications prepared by council engineering staff, and I offer my congratulations to all those involved,” Cr Dobie said.

The 15 approved projects will be carried out in the 2016/'17 financial year, and follow council’s earlier success in accessing Federal Black Spot funding of $663,400 for nine projects which are underway across the region, and will be completed by the end of the current financial year.

Southern Downs Regional Council’s director Engineering Services Peter See said the Black Spot funding supported projects that targeted road locations where crashes were occurring.

“In the case of the approved intersection projects, it’s about implementing low cost engineering treatments, such as lines, signs and traffic islands, to better define the intersections, make them more readable for motorists and, ultimately, to reduce the risk of crashes,” he said.

“Other projects will create improved visibility, superior road surfaces, and enhanced signage, and all of these measures are directed at producing a better environment for greater road safety outcomes for residents and other road users across the Southern Downs.”

In brief Man on drugs charges A 28-YEAR-OLD Stanthorpe man has been remanded in custody to reappear in Warwick Magistrates’ Court on 5 May on drugs charges following a raid on a house in Stanthorpe earlier this month.

Police said the man was arrested after Stanthorpe CIB detectives executed a search warrant on 11 April.

The man faces several charges including possession of methylamphetamine and drug utensils, possession of tainted property, breach of bail, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle or alternatively serious assault of police to avoid arrest, and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Police say the man had hired a vehicle and later reported it stolen.

They say he was stopped on Saturday 9 April on the Cunningham Highway at Womina but that he tried to drive off while holding a police officer to the side of the car.

The police officer was able to release himself unhurt.

Council office raid

POLICE investigations continue into a break-in at the council office in Mackenzie Street, Stanthorpe, on Monday 11 April.

A police spokesman said the raiders stole a number of electrical items, tools, electronic equipment and a small sum of cash.

Police are seeking any information and asking for public assistance in relation to the incident.

Saleyards beef up THE Warwick Saleyards is celebrating a significant milestone after receiving accreditation under the National Saleyards Quality Assurance (NSQA) program.

The NSQA accreditation demonstrates the commitment of the Warwick Saleyards to both meet and maintain recognised national standards in the handling of livestock through all stages of the prime market and store/re-stocker market, Saleyard System.

NSQA Inc. president Ian O’Loan OAM, and executive officer David

Pollock will present the Warwick Saleyard’s NSQA accreditation certificate to Southern Downs Regional Council Mayor Tracy Dobie at the saleyards on Tuesday to coincide with the weekly cattle sale.

Mayor Dobie said she was very proud to receive the accreditation certificate on behalf of the Warwick Saleyards and Southern Downs Regional Council.

“The Warwick Saleyards staff and all those involved in the process of achieving the National Saleyards Quality Assurance accreditation

should be extremely proud of their efforts,” Mayor Dobie said.

“This accreditation sends a clear message to the industry and to the community that the Warwick Saleyards is serious about product quality and integrity, and serves to strengthen the excellent reputation that the saleyards currently enjoys.

“It is anticipated that such accreditation will be a further drawcard for livestock sellers and buyers to use the Warwick Saleyards now and into the future.”

There are several steps in the

process towards gaining the NSQA accreditation which includes training of staff in the development and management of the Quality Assurance Program; assessing existing facilities and undertaking modifications or re-development as necessary to meet the requirements of the National Standard; developing the Quality Assurance Manual using the NSQA Inc guidelines; submitting the manual for audit and approval; and assessment of the saleyard under a site audit over the duration of a sale.

Woman charged with hitting officer A 38-YEAR-OLD Summit woman is set to appear before Stanthorpe Magistrates’ Court on 27 April charged with being a public nuisance and assaulting police.

Stanthorpe police were called to a disturbance between a male and female in the Stanthorpe CBD where the woman was arrested.

Police say that she hit one of the arresting officers as she was being led to the nearby police vehicle.

Remembering them ANZAC Day remembrance ceremonies will be held throughout the Southern Downs on Monday.

IT will be a special time for new Southern Downs Regional Council Mayor Tracy Dobie - participating in these special commemorative services as mayor for the first time.

Anzac Day already has special significance for Cr Dobie, who served in the Australian Army for 22 years, reaching the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

“Anzac Day is a significant time to reflect on the anniversary of the 1915 Gallipoli landing and those brave souls who died in the service of their country,” Mayor Dobie said.

“But it is an equally important time to remember the sacrifices made by current and ex-servicemen and women who died in war and on operational service in the hundred years since.

“There has been a growing interest and increased participation by the community in Anzac Day services across the Southern Downs and the nation, and with the significant milestone last year marking the Anzac Centenary, we’re certainly expecting a greater turnout at services next week.”

Mayor Dobie highlighted that numerous services have been organised throughout the region by the Returned Services League, the Veteran Services and Advocacy Services Australia and Southern Downs Regional Council, to enable all community members the flexibility to select a service that best suits their timetable.

“As most residents would know, the Warwick services include a Dawn Service, ceremonies at the War Graves Cemetery and Eden

Southern Downs Regional Council’s Cemeteries Team Leader and former soldier, Mark McGowan, will be the guest speaker at the War Graves Service in Warwick on Anzac Day, Monday 25 April.

Gardens Memorial Park, a march and an 11am service at the cenotaph in Leslie Park,” she said.

“A similar program of Anzac Day services has been arranged for the Stanthorpe community, but it should be noted that this year the venue for the 11am commemorative service will be held at the Stanthorpe RSL Club and not the Stanthorpe Civic Centre or the Weeroona Park Band Shell.

“Services will also be held in many of the smaller communities within the Southern Downs region including Allora, Killarney, Tannymorel, Yangan, Emu Vale, Leyburn, Pratten and Wallangarra.

“These are solemn occasions and I am pleased to honour the strong feeling of mateship of our Diggers.

“These ceremonies also serve an important role to encourage children to understand and appreciate the Anzac legend and spirit,“ Mayor Dobie said.

Mayor Dobie will attend the Stanthorpe Anzac Day Dawn Service, the War Graves ceremony and the Warwick Anzac Day march and

commemorative service.

The Deputy Mayor and all Councillors will attend and lay wreaths at various services across the region and look forward to standing with the community to remember the fallen.

Time Casey’sto tipsmake the call on drug dealers TIME could be up for drug dealers in Warwick, with Crime Stoppers calling on local residents to report information about those manufacturing and distributing crystal methylamphetamine (‘ice’) and other illicit drugs.

In the past six months of 2015 Crime Stoppers received almost 30 ‘ice’ related reports per month. The organisation is asking the Warwick community over the next two weeks to support the Dob in a Dealer campaign which aims to gather information about local drug dealing activity.

The Crime Stoppers Dob in a Dealer program is being rolled out across Australia to aid in the detection and disruption of drugs harming local communities.

Residents are urged to contact Crime Stoppers to anonymously report any information relating to people who may be bringing harmful drugs into the local community.

“We know that drugs like 'ice' or methylamphetamines are of serious concern to the community,” Crime Stoppers chief executive officer Trevor O’Hara said.

“The community is well aware of the devastating effects of ICE so we are asking all residents to help put a stop to the flow of drugs. Halting the spread of 'ice' requires a whole-of-community response and Dob in a Dealer is specifically aimed at stopping the manufacture and supply of drugs.

“Crime Stoppers is committed to working with the Queensland Police Service, the media and local residents to gather anonymous information that can help to reduce drug supply and drug related crimes and help keep the community safe,” Mr O’Hara said.

Crime Stoppers volunteers Cliff Farrell, Nancy De Prada, chairwoman and deputy mayor Jo McNally, Heather Sheriff and Amy Jasper from Crimestoppers.

“Local residents often hold the key to information that can help solve and prevent crime. We are asking residents in Warwick to play an active role and report those people that are bringing harmful drugs into the region.

“Making a report to Crime Stoppers is completely anonymous. Information providers will never be identified or called to a court case, but every piece of information provided can help solve crimes and reduce the supply of drugs.”

THE person who wrote to the press on 17 March said it all.

The person is from NSW way looking for real estate investment in Allora, who noticed the level of noise and dust coming from Grain X, and the outrageous late hours we the residents are subject to when their company pays cheaper rates in one of the blue ribbon suburbs in Brisbane.

No wonder they decided not to invest in Allora.

So what chance has anyone else to sell their homes. Just on one block alone five homes are up for sale in Herbert Street straight across from Grain X and many more on Forde Street.

Many people have complained to the Southern Downs Regional Council in the past four years.

It seems to me our complaint has fallen on deaf ears.

Our health is suffering because of the Grain X facility.

I’m sick of people who don’t live in the town saying it’s not that bad, they are not the ones who have to live here and have doors and windows closed every day because of the pollution and the excessive noise as well as the stress we are all under.

Does someone have to die before anything is done about Grain X? It is bad enough putting up with the noise in the day time, we also have to put up with the slamming of shipping containers at night well after 9pm.

I FEEL compelled to write, prior to our Anzac

Day services beginning, after the criticism of last year regarding the failure to sing the English national anthem.

We who attend do so in order to honour, remember and respect the memories of our brave young men whose lives were tragically cut short or permanently impaired in the belief of a safer world and the protection of our country.

We have a very dear 97-years-old friend who was a Rat of Tobruk.

For years he was reluctant to speak of his war experiences but recently he has spoken quite vividly as we listen enthralled, of the long time, living and sleeping in the trenches.

He served all through Africa, New Guinea and the first time he had any type of comfort was when they reached Aleppo. For the first time in long months they were issued a type of stretcher.

His recall of Aleppo was so very different to the hotbed it has become.

They were made very welcome and invited for meals with the locals and all three main religions lived harmoniously.

Interestingly he originated from the Downs and after the war took his land block up here and told us amusingly of he and his wife’s tough start.

Firstly in a tent in which they were flooded and then erected the prefab, given to them by the government.

His tenacity, his wonderful sense of humour, and the glimpses into all his mates and what he endured in the war inspire my deepest admiration and they will be in my thoughts when we attend our local Anzac Day service.

Just as a post script, I did mention and asked if they sang God Save the Queen, chuckling, “didn’t give it a thought”.

by Dr Denver Beanland - former president and member of the Royal Historical Society Historical Society of Queensland.

The launch was held on Thursday night at the Australian Rodeo Heritage Centre 4 Alice Street, Warwick.

The Festival runs from 1525 April and is part of the National Trust Heritage Festival - Queensland “Discoveries and Rediscovering”.

Events are being held at the local heritage centres and museums across the Southern Downs as part of the celebrations.

Associations come together QCWA Border Division will be the host the QCWA Southern Region meeting at the Warwick RSL Services and Citizens Club, Albion Street, Warwick, from 31 May to 3 June.

QCWA Southern Region includes QCWA members from the Warrego Division west to Quilpie, Western Division including Mitchell, Roma, Maranoa Division including Miles, Darling Downs Division including Oakey, Toowoomba, West Moreton Division including Ipswich, Boonah, South Eastern Division including Beaudesert, Southport, South Coast Division including Kilcoy, Brookfield, and Border Division with 17 Branches extending from Texas in the west to Karara east to Mt Colliery and north to Clifton.

THE Leyburn State Forest, west of Warwick will be the venue for this Sunday’s orienteering event, organised by Toowoomba’s Range Runners Club.

Club president, Felicity Crosato, said the forest was first mapped and used for orienteering for the Queensland Championships in 2007 and competitors enjoyed the open, “runnable” nature of the terrain and the challenges of navigating in its complex watercourse systems.

“We are expecting a good turn-out of club members to Sunday’s event plus junior orienteers from across the region, particularly those in the Darling Downs team,” she said.

“As well as the courses, we will have for our regular competitors. Sunday’s event will also have short, easy courses for beginners, and there will be instruction available on the basic map reading and navigational skills.

“Anyone interested in trying out orienteering is most welcome to attend. No special gear is required although sturdy footwear and a hat are recommended. Compasses may be borrowed at the event.”

Starting times will be between 9am and 10.30am. The assembly area for the event will be signposted off the Leyburn-Forestry Road which can be accessed via Thane off the Cunningham Highway.

Kids who just wanna skate mate

By JOYCE MARSH WOODENBONG CORRESPONDENT skateWOODENBONG board enthusiasts were treated to an afternoon of fun with a visit from ‘Ownlife’ skateboarding instructors Dylan McNamara and Yani Kawi as a part of National Youth Week.

They were supported by Kyogle Council Youth Advisory Committee, Kyogle Council, Kyogle Youth Action and Kyogle Together.

Dylan and Yani motivated the kids to learn skateboarding and to get active.

Safety awareness was in the forefront of the workshop.

The ‘Ownlife’ groups are based in Melbourne and Northern Rivers NSW, and the latter promote skateboarding events in the Northern Rivers region and beyond to inspire and teach safety within the sporting activity.

Woodenbong Progress Association only recently

opened the Skate Park and Outdoor Gym recreational area, and the members were delighted to see the area getting a great workout.

Mayor Danielle Mulholland said: “This event is a great outcome, demonstrating that partnerships between community groups and council have great value and that events like this, show that the Kyogle Council Community Strategic Plan incorporates the entire council area.”

KNOCK, KNOCK WHO’S THERE? EVERYONE loves a battler in sport and life, and while it is difficult to class Peter Moody as a battler it is fair to say that despite his heady success with Black Caviar he has never lost his bush roots and knock about larrikin status.

Never has that been more evident than when Robert Craddock broke the news of his latest escapade, and it had nothing to do with Cobalt, the VRC integrity unit or Black Caviar.

Raheen Stud principal Basil Nolan another knock about bloke woke to find a rather large package on his front lawn last Friday. The Nolans live in close proximity to the Cunningham Highway and Basil was more than a little reluctant to investigate too closely - not knowing what or who he may uncover. Imagine his surprise to find the package was none other than Peter Moody wrapped in swag.

Don’t know any other current or former leading Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane trainer who would pack up their Ute drive from Victoria to Warwick and camp on a mate’s front lawn.

It says much about Moody. You obviously can take the man out of the bush but never the bush out of the boy.

It is reported that Moody headed to Toowoomba for the Weetwood on Saturday, but after meeting up with a few old mates did not catch a glimpse of the two main races nor did he see Basil Nolan’s promising three-yearold Too Good To Refuse greet the judge in the fifth event.

Where and what Moody has planned for his next career move seems to be something he is undecided upon, however, he is a man that will be welcomed back to the racing fold with open arms should he choose that path at the end of his suspension. Racing needs characters like Moody for the stories surrounding them are woven into the folklore and mystic of a game that is a great leveller.

- Casey GOOD SUPPORT AT ALLMAN PARK THE five-event Warwick RSL Memorial Race day last Saturday at Allman Park was well supported by patrons, owners and trainers despite clashing with the big Weetwood meeting in Toowoomba.

The meeting opened with the running of the Warwick RSL Memorial Club 800m Maiden.

The race drew a field of 12 runners. In a close finish, the Kellie Monckton- trained Graff Pink proved too strong for Leading Story and favourite Shez Our Destiny. It was only the three-year-old filly’s sixth start.

The Toowoomba-trained galloper She’s a Kicker took out the second race one of the feature events on the card, the Mick Rawlins Memorial Class B 1200m. Rawlins was a third generation trainer and many of the Maryvale trainer’s family and friends were at the track on Saturday when the inaugural trophy was presented to connections.

With a 2.5kg claim for apprentice Adam Spinks, She’s a Kicker defeated Deputy Peck and Famous Grouse. The favourite Hashtag Yolo finished in fourth place.

Another big field lined up for the third event another Maiden over the 1350m journey. Starting at the good odds of $11, Rough Kiss saluted for trainer Quinton Kearney and connections.

The four-year-old gelding had not started since January, but trialled on his home track late in March and was well ridden by Vishan Venkaya Toowoomba galloper-trained Inka Dinka Doo saluted in the fourth event defeating another Toowoomba visitor It’s All Irish and the locally trained Ollie Runs Riot.

The Cup winner was scratched from the Toowoomba Weetwood meeting on Saturday with trainer Steven Thomas electing for a start on his home track.

BIG ANZAC WEEKEND FOR NRL FINALLY, an NRL round that made some sense for tipsters with most teams playing to the form guide. But if you are a Knights supporter, you are possibly still suffering a headache after the Broncos for the second week in succession managed to keep their opponents scoreless. The other big winners of course were the Cowboys. Last season’s grand finalists are certainly setting the pace this season along with the Eels and Broncos.

This week marks the NRL Anzac celebrations with three games to be played on Monday and no game on Thursday night.

The Broncos host the Bunnies in Friday night football at Suncorp. There is no way to guild the lily, the Bunnies were awful last weekend against the Cowboys and things do not get any easier for them here. Coach Maguire will be expecting more commitment from his senior players in this game, and the Broncos will be wary of the wounded Bunnies outfit.

Alex Glenn is an uncertain starter for the Broncos. Greg Inglis remains under what seems to be a permanent injury cloud which may have a lot to do with the Bunnies current form. He suffered a concussion against the Cowboys, but has been named to play at Suncorp. The Broncos start short priced favourites, but the Bunnies should be better than last week. Go the Broncos.

Saturday the Dogs return to ANZ with their tails between their legs after going down to the Warriors in Wellington.

This week they take on the vastly improved Titan’s side. They suffered possibly a shock loss to the Dragons last week but have lost no admirers.

The Dogs, however, should prove too strong here.

The Raiders and Tigers go head to head in the nation’s capital. Clay Priest has been named to make his debut for the Raiders who will be without Blake Austen.

The Tigers are searching for a win following a run of outs and their narrow golden point loss to Melbourne. In a tough game for tipsters, I am leaning towards the Tigers.

In the game of the round, the all-conquering Eels take on the Cowboys in Townsville. This is a real test for both sides. The Cowboys only defeat this season came at the hands of the Eels in round two. I believe the Cowboys have improved since then, and after announcing another unchanged side I believe they will start favourites and will notch another home town win here in what will be a great game.

Only one game on Sunday with the Sharks and Panthers going head to head at Shark Park.

The Sharks are sitting at the top end of the ladder this season and although the Panthers are playing well, I think the home-side will have too much bite here. Sharks for me.

Big day of football on Anzac Day with the Knights and Eagles playing in Newcastle; the traditional Dragons Roosters Anzac Day clash at Allianz and the Storm and Warriors to do battle at AAMI Park.

The Eagles should win in Newcastle and while the Dragons cracked their duck last week, I haven’t seen enough to think they can beat the Roosters here. With both sides out of sorts, this game could go either way. Melbourne Storm scraped their way to a win last week and are not travelling as well as in past seasons, however the Warriors are too unpredictable for me. Despite coming off a win against the Dogs in Round 7, I can’t see them as winners here.

WIN FOR DICK SPORTERS regular Dick Hilton finally hit the jackpot last Sunday taking home the winner’s prize. Ian Anderson finished runner-up and also picked up the pin shot on the third and also the Pro Pin. The run downs went to Norm Steele and Jim Mitchell while Paul Byrnes had the Mark Lynam and Ray Thorn did not go home empty handed either, they both left with a meat tray.

Tee off this Sunday is at the usual time of 8am to 8.30am, however there will be no Sporters on Sunday 1 May as this is the annual Central Motors Golf day. I understand that there is already a sheet up in the clubhouse for this popular day on the Stanthorpe golfing calendar.

LONG WEEKEND SHOOT MEMBERS of the Inglewood Sporting Shooters are preparing for a busy weekend over the Anzac Day long weekend. The club will be hosting a long weekend competition which will include SSAA Military Pistol Match; NRA Pistol Action Match and Three Positional Rifle.

The results will be tallied as one event will not be finalised until Monday. Shooters have the option of two rounds - Saturday and Sunday or either Saturday or Sunday. The event commences at 10am on Saturday and the entry fee is $25.

On 10 April, the club held a Rimfire competition. A new name emerged the winner, Michael Didsman outscored Ray and Stephanie Dudgeon.

The junior event was won by Will Dudgeon - almost making a Dudgeon white wash. In addition to the competition shoot, a demonstration day was held at the Wild West Saloon which proved popular.

Last Sunday Ray Dudgeon managed to go one better in the Muzzle Loading competition, coming away with a win. Filling the minor placings were Graham (Scruffy) Morgan and Michael Dudgeon.

In the Action Pistol event, Iain Bowen defeated Peter Jones and Jeffrey Graves. Tom Donald was successful in the 25m Standard Pistol Event, out pointing Jeffrey Graves and Trevor Allen.

Chapman returned a score of 46 points for the round. He was out in 22 and back home in 24 - his overall score gave him a clear seven points win over nearest rivals.

Four players returned 39 points, but it was Greg Yap that was the last man standing to take the runner-up prize.

Margie Locke continued her good form, wining the ladies event with 37 points. Racheal Hendry took second place after a countback saw Neta Thouard settling for a ball in the run down.

Sponsor for the day was Michael Lane who also provided a great array of trophies.

Len Leigh picked up the pin shot for the men at 3/12 and Geoff Hinze, visiting from Warwick GC, held the pin at 17.

There were no takers for the ladies pin at 3/12, although I understand there were a few of the men who attempted to claim it.

Linda Kelly had best approach for the ladies at 17. Pro-pins went to Dylan Barraclough at 1/10, Grant Draheim at 5/14 and Grant Howard at 9/18.

The run down went to 37 points and better for the men and 33 and better for the ladies.

After a mix-up with the pin markers last Saturday, a suggestion has been made to colour code the markers. Blue for men and pink for ladies.

Players who have difficulty with this arrangement should consult with ex-medico and club member, Greg, who would be able to explain the difference and which colour would apply to them.

Hopefully, this will end any confusion for future events.

There are two important dates on the calendar for local golfers. At the end of the month, two days of golf, a 4BBB sponsored by Jeff and Biz Ihle will be followed by the annual Central Motors Three Ball Ambrose is on the programme.

Both days are certain to attract big fields and plenty of visitors. Club players should ensure they get their names on the time sheet as soon as possible.

COME ‘n’ TRY SUCCESS ORGANISERS of last weekend’s Come ‘n’ try days at the Stanthorpe Croquet courts were pleased with the outcome of the two days.

Several potential new players took the opportunity to ‘have a go.” The club offers new players the opportunity to play four “free” days before joining to get a real feel for the game and for anyone who did not make it to the open days last weekend now would be an ideal time to try any of the mallet sports as there will be plenty of other players just learning the ropes as well.

In the Sunday group last week, all the newcomers succeeded in scoring hoops which gave them plenty of encouragement and we are sure to see their names in the winners' results in the future.

If you would like to know more about the various forms of the game, golf croquet is played on Wednesday and currently commences at 8.30am.

Gateball is played on Friday with a 9am starting time.

TURNBRIDGE RETURNS IN WINNING FORM JENNY Tunbridge and Val Richardson teamed to score a 23-13 win over Andrea Denkewitz in doubles. Tunbridge was playing her first game in some time, but her form showed no signs of time away from the game. In the singles game, despite having a break of three, Carol Verwey was defeated 26-16 by opponent Grace Howard.

Effey Russell and Pat Schnoor teamed up to play Margaret Dickenson and Heather Widderick in the other game of doubles. The game eventually went the way of Russell and Schnoor 26-16.

of three. Effey Russell also played very well and had two breaks of two. Margaret Dickenson also played very well she scored a hoop from halfway and had two breaks of two.

Snake charmer WE reported last week that prominent golfer Tom Page has earned a new title “Snake Charmer.” A little investigation revealed that in a recent midweek round of golf, Page had to answer the call of nature and headed for the toilet complex on the back of the course.

It was a quick trip when he discovered he was not alone - seems he was sharing the amenities with a very large brown snake which was curled up in a corner obviously enjoying the warmth of the bricks. Asleep or awake Page was not sticking around for a formal introduction and reckons he has never hit the ball as far as when he returned to the game. When news of the discovery of the serpent spread, fellow golfers investigated only to find that you should never poke a sleeping snake - seems they take poorly to being disturbed. Estimated to be over a metre and a half long, the snake and his buddy Page remain a talking point at the club - not sure if there are many queuing to use the said amenities since. Page is one who will be giving them a wide berth for a while.

TRIPLES IN GOLF CROQUET PLAYER numbers were ideal for Triples games at golf croquet and Val Fancourt Teresa Pyne and Bill Golding defeated Elaine Brown Di Wren and Shirley Page 13-8 in the first game. All players were in good form, however it was Val Fancourt who top scored with five hoops.

The Tigers play the combined Stanthorpe Texas side at the Reg Saunders Oval Texas in a rare Friday night clash this week. The game gets underway at 8.30pm.

The Wallangarra Rams posted one of their biggest wins last Saturday when they defeated Killarney 50-16 in their round two BRL clash.

Faron Anderson was a standout for the Rams crossing for four tries. Team mates Charles Duroux and James Springborg also played well for the home team.

The Rams have a bye this weekend while Killarney travel to Inglewood.

The Tigerettes continued on their winning way last weekend with another impressive win. After some shuffling of the League tag schedule due to the cancellation of the game between Pittsworth and Stanthorpe/Texas ladies, the undefeated Tenterfield girls played the combined Gremlinettes / Foxy Terriers side.

Once again the girls showed their class and superiority in the competition, scoring 34 unanswered points in what was a one-sided affair.

While the Tigerettes are undoubtedly the competition benchmark, the Stanthorpe/Texas side are sure to improve with more matches under their belt.

COWBOYS SUCCESS IN LOCAL DERBY THE local Derby between Wattles and Cowboys is always a keenly contested round of the TRL and on Sunday the Cowboys took the honours with an impressive 50-28 win.

The first half was a tight tussle with both teams trading tries before a Wattles mistake saw the Cowboys score under the posts from a scrum.

The conversion gave the home side an 18-16 half time lead and set the stage for a nail-biting second half.

However, when Wattles lost a player to the sin bin in the second half, the Cowboys took full advantage and ran in three tries in quick succession.

Wattles were unable to recover as the Cowboys galloped away to a strong win.

The A Grade win capped off a great day for Cowboys supporters after the Under18 side and Reserve Grade sides both notched up wins.

The Reserve Grade side posted an impressive 48-8 win. There were plenty of points scored in the Under18s game with Warwick running out 32-12 winners.

The three wins put the Cowboys in a strong position in the TRL club competition.

This weekend Wattles host Pittsworth while the Cowboys play Highfields WINS FOR TIGERS AND RAMS AND TIGERETTES IN Tenterfield, the Tigers proved too strong for the visiting Roosters in their round two clash last Saturday. In a tough game, the Tigers outplayed the Roosters to post a 50 -28 win after leading 22-10 at the halftime break. Tigers coach Chris Bathersby said after the game that halfback Jarrod McIntosh was undoubtedly the Man of the Match crossing for four tries for the Tigers. Second Rower Murray Johnson also had a strong game in attack and defence. Others that caught the eye were Ben Hickey and Jake Kelly. Centre Mark McGrady also got among the tries scoring a double.
