H

oppers Crossing Secondary College is a single campus, co-educational College with an enrolment of approximately 1,400 students. Great emphasis is placed on developing innovative and challenging educational programs, which is achieved by maintaining a close working relationship with the College community.

Our students are TOMORROW’S LEADERS. The College offers a structured student leadership program including a Student Representative Council (SRC) and established High Resolves Program. Opportunities exist for involvement in programs such as Youth Parliament and the School for Student Leadership. College Captains are involved in key decision-making at the College as members of the College Council and represent the student body in these decisions.

Global leadership is also encouraged: three international opportunities (China, Italy and North America) allow students to develop leadership skills on a global platform.

These programs see our students lead others in an international context.

Our students are SUCCESSFUL. In 2015, over 80% of Year 12 students received their top tertiary preference. We take pride in offering students guided support throughout their chosen pathway of VCE, VCAL or VET studies and prepare students for University, TAFE or employment options.

University Enhancement Studies are offered at the College and provide opportunities for students to incorporate tertiary studies within their VCE program.

Our students are DIGITAL LEARNERS. Information and Communications Technology is prioritized across the curriculum with the inclusion of interactive whiteboards or digital media projectors in every classroom.

Students are welcome to utilize their preferred learning technology, supported by our BYOD program. This is aimed to skill students to take their place as digital citizens.

Our students are PERFORMERS. A strong Performing Arts Program underpins a vast extra-curricular offering. Our students are active participants in the Wakakirri Secondary Schools Challenge, a national dance competition whereby students choreograph routines, design costumes and assemble stage sets. The College was awarded Victorian Story of the Year in both 2014 and 2015.

ayside P-12 College has campuses in Williamstown, Newport and Altona North catering for students from prep to Year 12. Our culture is one of ambition and excellence in an inclusive and innovative learning environment.

Why our junior school?

Located at the Altona North Campus we cater for students in Prep to Year 6. What makes Bayside Junior School different to others in the area is the access our students have to specialist facilities and specialist teachers in Science, Technology, Performing Arts and PE. “I love Science because I get to work in a real science lab” Shan – Year 3 Students, parents and teachers often talk about the sheer joy of learning and teaching that takes place in our state of the art, technology rich, learning environments.

In our Junior School we: take the time to get to know our children and in partnership with parents develop an understanding of their strengths and needs; place an emphasis on literacy and numeracy; expect our parents to be actively involved in their child’s learning; offer a wonderful transition into middle school.

We cater for students from Years 7 to 9. All students participate in the Voyager Program.

This program focuses on: explicitly teaching students how to learn and challenging them to take responsibility for their own learning; providing opportunities for leadership; and fostering in each child the ability to question, research, analyse and apply knowledge so that they can contribute as responsible world citizens.

There are two middle schools at Bayside. One based at the Altona North Campus and the other at the Williamstown Campus. The Bayside Middle School Program has been designed to: recognise and provide for the learning needs of middle school students; emphasise traditional academic studies; present a range of clear pathways into our senior campus (Paisley) and beyond.

The School has been completely rebuilt and caters for students in Years 10 through to 12. The staff work with students and families to prepare for exciting futures beyond school. USC is a co-educational Government Year 7-12 college with three campuses.

Our vision inspires students to ‘Create the Future’ and we offer a high quality education that provides for all students’ interests and abilities. Students have travelled to China each year for the last three years, as part of the Victorian Young Leaders to China program.

The college is proud of our Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) specialist program, which prepares students for VCE and beyond, focusing on Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organisation and Reading. Our partnership with Victoria University includes university teachers teaching our students vocational subjects such as Building and Construction and Electrical courses at our Trade Training Centre, as well as VCE students undertaking the Early University Program. In this program Year 11 students complete a unit of work at VU Footscray and Year 12 students begin their university degree, with a guaranteed place at VU. On average 97% our students receive an offer at university or TAFE. Our vibrant Performing Arts and Music program, hugely successful Sports Academy and School Leadership programs add to the many opportunities available at VUSC. Our interschool sports program is comprehensive and our Rugby Academy has seen enormous success with many championship wins and individuals selected for professional teams. Our unique TEAM 9 program combines personal development and hands-on learning experiences for our Year 9 students, and our Positive Behaviour Support program creates a positive school climate, a culture of student competence and an open, responsive management system for all school community members.

FOOTSCRAY CITY COLLEGE The College strives to build and extend the aspirations of its students

The pastoral care system at Year 7 and beyond ensures that the school knows its students well and attends carefully to their personal and academic needs.

T

he educational opportunities and experiences at Footscray City College (FCC) are exciting. The college strives to build and extend the aspirations of its students, so that they can embrace their futures as fully confident, capable, talented and optimistic young men and women.

The school offers an extensive range of choices for students within a vibrant and dynamic educational setting. This greater choice gives extended opportunity for students to discover and explore their individual interests and passions, and to excel.

Two significant curriculum priorities of the college are the Sciences and the Arts.

We have a formalised partnership with Victoria University to enrich and extend the Science programs of the college. This partnership gives our students access to highend resources and facilities not normally available to secondary students.

The college has received accreditation from the Department of Education to offer the Select Entry Accelerated Learning (SEAL) Program, commencing in 2015. Students enter this program in Year 7, and it is tailored to the learning needs of those with high academic ability and potential. It offers extra challenge and greater depth in learning.

Students will complete the first four years of secondary school in three years, and then have three years to complete VCE. In Year 10 students will have the option to study a combination of extension units and VCE units. In Year 12, students will also have the possibility of studying a university subject as part of their program.

FCC also specialises in nurturing and challenging all students through the different phases of their secondary schooling from Year 7 to 12.

Its Year 7 students step into the recently renovated Year 7 Learning Centre which has been purposely designed to provide the youngest students with a warm and inviting home base as well as a bright and stimulating learning environment.

The pastoral care system at Year 7 and beyond ensures that the school knows its students well and attends carefully to their personal and academic needs. Close communication with parents is integral to the pastoral care approach.

The curriculum is comprehensive at Year 7 and 8 with an emphasis on developing strong literacy and numeracy foundations for future academic success.

In Year 9, students enter the Futures Centre program where, in addition to a focus on the traditional academic core subjects, students spend one day a week in project based units. These units are specifically geared towards building those skills considered essential for success in the 21st century world.

At Years 10 to 12 there is a strong emphasis on academic rigour, and student programs are tailored to individual needs and strengths. They have a wide range of choices in the traditional areas of the Maths/Sciences, Humanities and the performing and visual arts, as well as niche areas of interest, such as multimedia, fashion, hospitality, horticulture, and avionics.

SELECT ENTRY ACCELERATED LEARNING PROGRAM (SEALP) This program is tailored to students with high academic ability and potential. Students are accelerated through the core program for Years 7 – 10 in three years. A combination of VCE Units and Year 10 Enrichment units are studied in Year 10. As well as completing VCE units in Years 11 and 12, there will be the possibility of studying a university subject.

SUNSHINE COLLEGE Innovation and hard work brings Sunshine College Maths Team Victorian recognition.

T

he Sunshine College maths teachers have been recognised by the Department of Education & Training at its annual Victorian Education Excellence Awards ceremony held at the Regent Theatre in Melbourne on Friday October 30th 2015.

The Deputy Premier and Minster for Education the Hon. James Merlino presented representatives of the Sunshine College Maths Team with the Award for Outstanding School Advancement in recognition of the tremendous amount of work they have done in developing and delivering the maths program that runs exclusively at Sunshine College.

The programâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s results and innovative practices has led to numerous visits to the school from teachers across Australia and internationally.

The professional work of the teachers has been responsible for improving the mathematical skill of students to the extent to which the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s NAPLAN results are evidence of the commitment of teachers and the success of the program.

The program is a multi-faceted approach to teaching mathematics. It supports all students to achieve. It accelerates the learning processes for all students from those that have difficulty understanding mathematical concepts to those that are high achievers and enjoy the challenge of being pushed to complete complex mathematical problems.

The belief by teachers in the importance of building the capacity of all students and not just a select few is leading to more and more students going onto tertiary studies at places like Melbourne University.

All category winners on the night were then eligible to win the very prestigious 2015 Lindsay Thompson Award for Excellence in Education, which Sunshine College won as well.

Winning this award is a huge honour for the school and is the first time that a team of teachers has won this award.

Both awards recognise the enormous amount of work that the maths teachers at Sunshine College have all undertaken over the last 6 years.

Another important measure of school success is the ‘relative growth’ of individual students from Year 7 to Year 9. Our students have made enormous growth.

NAPLAN results are a single measure of student achievement and at Sunshine College we know we have very talented students who are great singers, athletes, dancers, artists and in general kind and thoughtful young people. NAPLAN does not measure these areas of our student’s individuality and personality.

Students across Australia are judged to have made LOW, MEDIUM or HIGH ‘relative growth’ from year 7 in 2013 to year 9 in 2015. All schools across Australia want their students to achieve MEDIUM or HIGH relative growth. Our results are as follows:

Students in their second year of secondary schooling or its equivalent (usually Year 8) and who are Australian citizens or holders of a visa granting permanent resident status in Australia are eligible to apply for entry into a selective entry high school.

This applies to students living in Victoria or those living and studying interstate or overseas. More information for students living interstate/overseas can be found at the web address given below.

Students attending government and non-government schools, as well as homeschooled students, are eligible to apply.

Citizens of New Zealand residing in Australia are also eligible to apply.

All applicants who are offered a place will be required to show original documentation, such as a Certificate of Evidence of Australian Citizenship, birth certificates or visas, before enrolment can be finalised.

Applicants who do not meet residency requirements at the time of applying, but expect to meet them in the near future, are also able to apply. These applicants will be required to show evidence that they meet all residency requirements before being offered a place.

EXERCISE: ESSENTIAL FOOD FOR THE BRAIN Our children are some of the least active in the world

T

here is a shocking truth about Australian children that is unexpected for such a sport crazy country: our children are some of the least active in the world: 84% of school aged children fail to get one hour of physical activity a day; 75% of children aged two to four spend more than one hour in front of a television or computer daily and about 15 per cent have a screen in their bedroom.

As well as being essential to physical and emotional health, exercise has a significant role to play in the healthy development of your child’s brain and this affects your child’s ability to learn.

How well the brain develops is very dependent on the kinds of experiences and opportunities a child has from the moment they are born. While good nutrition and nurturing relationships are essential, movement also plays an important role. Dr Daniel Wolpert, a neuroscientist and engineer who studies how the brain controls the body, argues that the brain’s most important job is learn, refine and control movement, because everything we do is movement-based, even thinking. When movement opportunities are reduced, the brain’s opportunity to learn and function to its potential capacity is considerably hampered.

How do you encourage children to “get active”?

Children look to adults for guidance on many areas of life – including exercise.

Research has shown that parents who make exercise a regular part of your day are more likely to have young children who are also physically active. The trick is to make exercise fun and make it look like you are having fun as well! The sooner you start, the better!

Babies Babies need to move, because even early exploratory movements soon after birth affects how the brain wires itself.

n

Keep babies unwrapped and out of restrictive containers (like the car seat, pram, bouncer, etc.) for as much time as possible.

n

Keep hands and feet uncovered as much as possible to encourage movement.

n

Tummy time when awake is very important. Tummy time enables those inbuilt, initial exploratory movement patterns to help the baby feel their body moving against the surface of the mat or your own body. This is the first step towards early independent movement.

n

Avoid any screen time at all. Babies and children less than two years of age learn far more from moving and interacting with the world around them.

Toddlers and pre-schoolers Toddlers need lots of opportunities to gain good balance so that later motor skills have a solid foundation on which to function. It’s hard to hop or skip or even sit still in a chair if your balance is poor! n

Go for walks, encourage your toddler to balance along edges, planks, stepping stones and the like, and to run up and down grassy slopes. Good balance is essential for automatic control of the body.

Put away that computer device and turn off the TV! Avoid screen time as much as possible. Limit it to a maximum of one hour a day. No time at all is better, but challenging to implement! If you do allow your toddler to watch a screen, choose an interactive show, such as Playschool – so children get up and dance and sing along.

Primary School Children Active, healthy kids Australia report that only 19% of Australians aged 5-17 years and 15% of Australians aged 12-17 years, meet the recommended activity guidelines of accumulating at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. So how to encourage your primary schoolers to get active? n

n

As for younger age groups, active parents encourage active children, so look for an activity you are happy to do with your children – start with a simple game of catch, or cricket in the back yard. Once you all feel more confident head out for a picnic to a local park with scooters or bicycles. Picnic near the playground equipment so children can still see you and you them while they play.

This age group will spend hours in a swimming pool playing. Make sure your children are swim safe – so lessons are essential first and they need to be supervised.

n

Monitor screen time. Restrict TV to the few favourite shows each day. Turn the TV off once they are finished. Try to avoid having the TV on all the time.

Teenagers The most active teenagers are those who grow up playing a sport and continue to do so during their teenage years. If your child is a reluctant exerciser and needs to be “dragged kicking and screaming” from a screen it’s definitely a challenge to get them active! Here are a few suggestions: n

Start slowly. If you have a dog, make it the responsibility of the teenager in the house to walk the dog daily. Even if they just amble along for 10 minutes, it’s exercise they would not have otherwise had! Gradually encourage a longer walk.

n

If watching TV try to build in some exercise when the commercials are on… make a game of it … who can do the most leg lifts in a row? How many push-ups can you do in the ad break?

n

Boys love to have muscles. Encourage weight training – start with just their own body as the weight – push-ups, the plank, crunches etc all build muscle bulk.

Alexander College is at the brink of an educational revolution. Principal, Mr Wayne Haworth, has been joined by the new Assistant Principal, Ms Preeti Maharaj, to lead change in the way education is presented to students, to create authentic student empowerment.

Together, Wayne and Preeti share a vision of a student led college. “At Mount Alexander College, we empower students with their learning,” Wayne says. “Students have been trained to participate on Teacher Selection Panels and recently assisted in the selection of our new Assistant Principal. From 2016, our curriculum options are wider and more varied, creating enhanced learning opportunities. Traditional year levels have been removed allowing students to undertake subjects beyond their usual year level, but at their learning level. We have removed the glass ceiling that exists with a traditional curriculum structure. Students deserved to be challenged in not only the curriculum but also in other ways. We want to build confidence and leadership capacity in young people. By putting students at the centre of their learning, we are preparing them for the challenges of the 21st Century.”

This semester Mount Alexander College has a diversity of individual programs catering for the increasingly global attitudes and needs of our students. Roland is learning through the Massive Online Open College, or as it is known, the MOOCs program. He is studying “Learning How to Learn’, about how your brain works and how to effectively remember the content you are learning through the University of California. Likha, one of our (Year 8) SEAL students is studying Latin online whilst at school, but is also enrolled in Film Studies, Pre-VCE Maths Methods, Advanced Chinese, VCE Biology and preVCE English. Other areas of interest that students have investigated are Hardware security; Ebola – Symptoms, History and Origins; Super Earth and Life; Introduction to Thermodynamics: Transferring Energy from Here to There;

We are about system level changes. Schools are about students, and that is the core value that we have to remember. We will share resources and work together with any school that wants to, whether primary or secondary, because great public education is about everyone’s future.”

Mr. Pete Hutton, the innovative Templestowe College principal, is mentoring Wayne. Peter has appeared on the TedXTalks talking about his innovative approach to learning.

The two colleges are working closely together to create a school where students drive the teaching and learning by actively nominating subjects as well as the content that is taught. Teachers in turn need to constantly learn and evolve to keep pace with the specific needs of the students at the college.

Preeti joined the leadership team at the college at the end of July this year after leaving her Leading Teacher position at Thornbury High School.

Student reports provide an overview of how well your child is doing at school.

T

he more you know about your child’s school, the more you will be able to support their learning. The following communication channels are available so you can be kept informed of your child’s experience at school. You can also arrange meetings with class teachers or the principal throughout the year.

Student reports Student reports provide an overview of how well your child is doing at school. Parents receive a written report card twice a year.

Parent-teacher interviews You will have at least one formal interview with your child’s teacher/s each year. If you have any concerns about your child’s progress throughout the year you can contact the school for an appointment and make a mutually convenient time to meet with the classroom teacher or year-level coordinator.

A parent-teacher interview enables you to: l discuss how your child is progressing, both academically and socially l see examples of work l get to know your child’s teacher/s l stay informed about plans for your child’s future learning.

Interpreting services are available for parents from non-English backgrounds to attend the parent-teacher interviews. Your child’s school will be able to assist you to access this service.

School newsletters School newsletters include important information, dates and promote student achievements. They provide a great way to learn about what is happening at school and activities you and your child can be involved in. In cases of shared custody, you many need to arrange with your school to receive two copies.

Annual report to the school communities The annual report to school communities provides a concise summary of a school’s achievements and progress. Government schools are required to share their annual reports with their local communities.

Reports are provided to parents, placed on the school’s website and on the Victorian State Register, which is managed by the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority. Contact your school for a copy or visit the State Register.

Interpreting and translating services for parents All government schools can provide access to interpreting and translating services free of charge for parents from language backgrounds other than English.

Schools can provide interpreters for: l parent/teacher interviews l information sessions on school programs l issues concerning discipline or welfare l educational assessment of students l enrolling students.

The emphasis in the junior school is on the fundamental skills of literacy, numeracy and the development of research and inquiry skills. The program is delivered in a state of the art Year 7 centre. Here are some options

By MICHELE MITTEN FINISHING high school can be a scary experience. Not everyone knows what they want to do next, however having a Year 12 certificate is not always enough these days to ensure a successful career. Further education doesn’t have to be just university.

Diplomas, apprenticeships and traineeships are also other options to be considered.

Many people don’t know what they want to do when they finish school If you’re not sure, that’s OK, as nothing is set in stone. Jobs are no longer for life and the average person makes a career change around five times during their working life.

Be open-minded and willing to learn, as jobs change and our likes and dislikes are learned through trial and error.

Your marks don’t define your course or career choice.

Ask yourself why you want to do a course. Is it because you really have a passion for the end job, or is it because of the prestige associated with the job?

Be as honest with yourself as possible.

There are different paths to get to the same result If you don’t get the results you hoped for, remember that there are different ways to getting to the same destination.

While getting good grades gives you more immediate options, in the long term no-one will remember your marks.

They don’t define you and what you will achieve in your career. You could work and then study a little later as a mature student, you could do a different course and transfer over to your desired course at a later date.

Choose the course for you It’s very easy to choose a course or place of study based on what your friends are choosing, or what your parents are choosing for you. It can be daunting going out into the world on your own after having had the security of friendships.

Going straight into work Even if you go straight into a job, remember that there is normally further training at some stage. Starting at the bottom as a school leaver will certainly require training to get to the next level.

Having a gap year Some students choose to defer their studies as they don’t know what they want to do. Others choose a gap year to de-stress from Year 12 exams and travel. Whatever your reasons, make the most of your gap year. Work experience, volunteering, travel and casual jobs all contribute to your future.

Just remember that if you take a year off don’t think you will suddenly realise what you want to do.

yndale Secondary College is co-educational single campus school with an enrolment of approximately 990 students. We offer great advantages in the breadth of curriculum choices, provision of specialist learning areas and facilities and a wide range of co-curricula programs. GROSSEK’S VIEW Domestic violence is a scourge that must be ended

E

arlier this year I wrote on the insidiousness of domestic violence and its impact on student learning. I was inspired by The Age newspaper journalist Annabel Crabb who had herself written a moving piece on how in her early days as a print journalist been caught up in the damaging absence of coverage given to this tragic behaviour that was becoming all too prevalent in our society. I concluded my piece with the following: ‘Schools can do a lot, but not enough. Let’s not look for quick non-fix solutions like more training for teachers. A whole of society approach is what is required to tackle domestic violence. Making mums safe in their homes is a great first step in developing the whole child.’

A reader challenged me to articulate a vision of what a “whole of society approach” to dealing with domestic violence might look like, adding that worthy though my sentiments were, they had heard it all before and matters weren’t improving. I knew that my reader was spot on with her observation and the feeling it left me with was most uncomfortable to say the least.

Domestic violence is one of our most serious societal issues, one which leaves us all scarred and simultaneously incredibly difficult to reduce if statistical evidence means anything at all. For example, in our state alone, Victoria, police were called out to 65,393 domestic violence incidents in 2013-14, twice as many as in 2009-10. It is true that victims are reporting more frequently, but women’s services say the actual rate of domestic violence is also increasing, as is the severity of physical attacks.

Disturbingly, police estimate that they are only called out to between 40 and 50 per cent of cases.

So what could a “whole of society” approach look like? To begin agreement on the root causes would be a helpful starting point. To this end, the example of Dame Quentin Bryce, former governor-general is noteworthy. Dame Quentin’s starting point is the identification that here in Australia we have a cultural and attitudinal problem based in rigid gender roles and stereotypes. Central to this viewpoint, as Bryce observes is, “The truth that domestic and family violence is caused by unequal distribution of power and resources between men and women.” It is unsurprising then that some men would view women as their possessions rather than as equal partners, and the slippery slope is beckoning!

Education is one weapon in the fight to redress such attitudes and gender inequality.

Men who say enough is also helpful. The example of White Ribbon – an organisation established by men to fight domestic violence against women – takes the battle to men by their gender colleagues, a potentially powerful approach. On an individual basis, the extended and ultimately successful campaign by Phil Cleary, a former champion footballer, politician and media personality, to have the arcane law of provocation removed from the statute books in Victoria, demonstrates that we can change things.

Research dollars are badly needed to evaluate the growing number of campaigns to reduce domestic violence. Whilst the figures remain gloomy, despite numerous anti-domestic violence strategies exist both here in Australia and internationally, governments need complement their rhetoric with substantial increases in the funds available to design and conduct evaluative programs that will identify approaches that give substance to the ambition to reduce domestic violence. This will not be

easy, quick or cheap – rigorous, longitudinal studies take time and plenty of resources, but we are serious we will demand it of our governments.

This is not to say that our federal government has been sleeping at the wheel – we do have a National Plan to Reduce Violence against Women and their Children 2010-2022, but we can and must do more. One of the main reasons women, who are the victims of domestic violence, do not leave abusive partners is fear and this is coupled with lack of support. We need to provide that support in meaningful levels to demonstrate that gender inequality must be smashed once and for all.

Quentin Bryce is of the view that Australian society has lost “a lot of neighbourliness and community engagement”. To what extent this observation is accurate is questionable, nonetheless, we could do worse than focus our energies on strengthening the bonds and understanding between us. We are, after all, a nation of diverse ethnicity and the scourge that domestic violence is scars us all. Schools can also play their part educating our children on the importance of gender equality, community cohesiveness and shared responsibility for dealing with social ills such as domestic violence must be sustained.

T

he move between primary and secondary school happens alongside the transition from childhood to adulthood. With this comes many changes – changes to bodies, emotions, behaviours and attitudes.

Teachers and staff understand these changes and can provide information and support. Friendships developed during secondary school can provide peer support and help children develop social skills and self-esteem.

Making new friends and feeling comfortable are especially important when children start secondary school. It is important to remember, however, that your child’s friendships may change as they develop a sense of themselves and make sense of the world around them. A child’s relationship with their parents and family may similarly change.

Students adapt to transition in different ways. If you feel that your child is having difficulties, it is important to discuss your concerns and ask for help if needed.

Supporting your child’s welfare Parents have an important role in supporting their children’s progress at school. It is also important to know that there are staff with specific roles to support student wellbeing and student learning available in schools.

The importance of health and fitness Health and fitness is all about making healthy lifestyle choices, such as: n

While it is the responsibility of your child’s school to support a healthy lifestyle, at the end of the day it is you as parents who need to take the ultimate responsibility for the behaviour of your child.

Friendships and the transition to school Many children start secondary school expecting to make new friends. Friends are people that your child can talk to, share things with, confide in and sometimes argue with. Remember, conflict is a normal part of growing up. Conflict is not necessarily bullying, even though it may be upsetting and need resolution.

Parents and friends play different roles in the life of children. You influence your child’s long-term decisions to do with values and morals. Your child’s friends are more likely to influence short-term choices, such as the way they dress and their interests. Strong relationships with you and your child’s friends help your child grow into a welladjusted adult with strong social skills.

MORE ACTION NEEDED ON BODY IMAGE AND STRESS Mental health implications need to be considered

A

RECENT Mission Australia youth survey involving 15,351 young Australians aged 15-19 contains some discouraging news for the federal government. They unfortunately reported that 43 per cent of teenage girls consider the issue of body image a major worry compared to only 19 per cent of young males.

The study’s authors claim that the Government’s attempts to address the issue have been unsuccessful. Mission Australia’s National Manager of Research, Dr Bronwen Dalton, says “in terms of the very high concern around body image among young women, we continue to make the point that well-meaning efforts to combat the problem by governments and others have failed to make an impact and need to be reconsidered.”

Michael Carr-Gregg who is a nationally registered child and adolescent psychologist working in private practice in Melbourne says “At the very least, its time to seriously question the efficacy of the Voluntary Industry Code of Conduct on Body Image and Positive Body Image Awards to guide the media, fashion and advertising industries to adopt more body image friendly practices along with the Butterfly Foundation’s ‘Free to Be’ body image education services. Given that many girls in particular, seem to now believe that they are born into a giant beauty contest – it seems timely that a national summit on body image be held with major stakeholders and a clear re-evaluation of the existing strategy is called for”. He is passionate about adolescent mental health, technology and education.

The survey results also beg the question as to what has happened to the resilience of young people with 40 per cent of participants stating that coping with stress was their major personal concern (17 per cent extremely concerned + 23 per cent very concerned). Various other studies have found that self harm is present in between 11-12% of girls and perhaps this is a byproduct of this generation’s inability to cope with stress.

This is particularly disappointing, in light of the fact that schools have for some years, had access to a variety of evidence based frameworks in the form of the Mindmatters and Kidsmatters resource and professional development initiative, supporting Australian primary and secondary schools in promoting and protecting the mental health and social and emotional wellbeing of all the members of school communities.

In addition, all Australian schools have had access to strength-based curriculum material such as beyondblue’s excellent Senseability package.

These programs focus on problem solving, decision making, conflict resolution, anger management and the ability to name and recognise one’s own thoughts and feelings.

The problem is that none of these programs are compulsory in any year level and even if they are present, will only ever be as good as the teachers who deliver it and their training in the use of the resources. Perhaps it is time to tie funding to such programs so that they are at last seen as important as Maths and English.

A final concern arising from this report is that school or study problems (36.5 per cent) continue to grow. It is hard to tell whether this is a product of peer pressure, hysterical

parents or schools taking an enormous eggbeater to the supposed importance of Year 12.

Back in 2003 the NSW Commissioner for Children and Young People called for an “urgent investigation of how to support young people during this stressful period and how to work with parents and the community to provide realistic guidance to students”.

The study found that pressure to perform in the HSC contributes to one in 11 adolescent suicides in NSW – yet the problem persists.

Dr Karen McGraw’s 2006 study showed that nearly one in five year 12 students have considered suicide or cutting or burning themselves because of exam and homework pressures. Perhaps it is time schools and the community at large turn the VCE volume down and instead let young people know that they are not their ATAR and that there are many different ways to get where they need to go.

While much of the media will focus on the fact that the study revealed that young Australians overwhelmingly believe the biggest issue facing the nation, the economy and the environment – traditionally a major issue for young people – has dropped dramatically as a matter of national importance, with concern falling by more than half since last year’s survey.

“Few people realise that 75 per cent of all mental health problems in human beings begin prior to the age of 25. Current data suggests that 1 in 7 primary school students

and 1 in 4 secondary school students have a diagnosable mental illness but 70 per cent don’t seek help. The truth is that there will never be enough funding for adolescent mental health services and there needs to be a reconsideration not only of existing service delivery models but also a concentrated investment in prevention. My colleagues and I are expensive ambulances at the bottom of a cliff – the Mission Australia youth survey suggests that what our young people and their families need is a robust fence at the top,” says Michael Carr-Gregg.

Dr Michael Carr-Gregg works as the Managing Director of The Young and Well Cooperative Research Centre, established by the Australian Government Initiative administered by the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research.

His training and approach incorporates cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness skills and interventions drawn from positive psychology research. He is a founding member of the National Centre Against Bullying and Chairs their Cybersafety Committee. He sits on the Board of Smiling Mind as well as being a Community Ambassador for Big Brothers Big Sisters and Postvention Australia and Playgroup Victoria.

Since 2012 Kew High School has led state education in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) with the introduction of our QTablet program.

The QTablet program is a 1:1 device program where every student has access to a Tablet PC. Our QTablet program supports 21st century learning and increases student engagement, collaboration and organisation.

Engagement and Enrichment A comprehensive Extension and Enrichment program enables students to reach their full potential. The program includes such pursuits as: debating and public speaking, the Science Talent Search, Da Vinci Decathlon, Mathematics Enrichment Program, Tournament of Minds, Science Drama, the World Team Challenge, Leadership Development Courses, Chess Club, Computer Programming Club, Lego Club, 3 in 6 Film Making Competition, Production bi-annually, Ski Day Trip and the Alpine School.

The Music Program The music program is vibrant and well established and offers students a wide range of experiences learning to play and performing as a part of the Concert Band, music ensembles, jazz band and rock bands. Brass, woodwind, string and percussion instruments are offered, in addition to piano, vocal training and Chinese instruments.

The school boasts a Chinese music ensemble which has performed internationally.

The Sports Program The school enjoys a proud tradition of being highly competitive and well respected.

Kew has achieved consistent success in a wide variety of sports. The focus of the program is on participation at all levels with positive outcomes for students. Sports offered include House Sports, encompassing swimming, athletics and cross-country running; inter-school sport through our affiliation with School Sport Victoria; and other sporting pursuits such as cycling, mountain bike riding and snow sports. We have an outstanding tradition in Volleyball and conducts a specific year long program.

Parent and Community Involvement We encourage all parents to play an active role in the school community. For our students to flourish, they rely on a positive partnership between the home and school.

We value our parents and provide them with opportunities for input.

arra Hills Secondary College is a multi-campus government secondary school in the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria Australia. We have two campuses, a year 7 – 10 Campus at Mt Evelyn and a Mooroolbark Campus with both year 7 – 10 and senior (year 11/12) precincts on the one site. Current enrolments are between 700 – 750 students and have been rising over the last four years.

The Mt Evelyn Campus typically accepts students from the local Mt Evelyn area, nearby Lilydale, Silvan and towns further down the Warburton Highway in the Yarra Valley, including such areas as Wandin, Seville, Woori Yallock and beyond. Students attending this campus progress to the Mooroolbark Campus for their senior studies.

Bus transport is made available to do this.

The Mooroolbark Campus directly serves the Mooroolbark, Lilydale, Kilsyth, Montrose, Croydon and Bayswater areas. Direct local transport exists linking each of these areas to the school.
