By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Geelong has lost its Target headquarters, with its 900 jobs.

Target senior management announced on Thursday the headquarters would be moving “in a year or so” to an unspecified location in Melbourne’s west.

Up to 25 per cent of jobs will be axed and the remaining jobs would go with the relocation.

Wesfarmers chief executive Richard Goyder said a voluntary redundancy process would be put in place.

Staff at the Thompsons Road, North Geelong, headquarters were told on Thursday.

Mr Goyder said the number of jobs to go had not yet been finalised but expected them to be less than the 25 per cent being rumoured in the last few days.

He said the move was being made to attract quality staff and drive change through the poorly performing business.

Mr Goyder said he hoped the site could be rezoned and turned into a shopping centre.

The Australian Services Union condemned the announcement to close the Geelong Head Office Support Centre.

Changes to your water supply Barwon Water is calling on back-up water sources, the Melbourne to Geelong pipeline and Barwon Downs borefield, in response to prolonged dry conditions.

Barwon Water will access the Victorian water grid via the 59-kilometre Melbourne to Geelong pipeline from the beginning of April.

The Barwon Downs borefield, a critical source previously used to supplement supplies in drought conditions, is also being readied for operation.

Barwon Water customers will not pay extra for these water sources; prices are locked in until June, 2018.

Lyons ‘a chance in 2017’

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Geelong voters will elect a fresh council in 2017 and Darryn Lyons could return as mayor, according to the state opposition leader.

Matthew Guy reckons Cr Lyons would have a fair chance of winning his mayoral position back.

The Andrews Government was forced to back down on its plan to install administrators to run City Hall for the next four and a half years.

The opposition, Greens and crossbenchers in the upper house all stated concerns at the length of time Geelong would be without a council.

Legislation to sack the council was passed in the lower house on Tuesday, with the council to be dismissed until 2020. But the Government lacked numbers to ram the bill through the upper house, forcing Labor to negotiate with the Greens.

Opposition leader Matthew Guy said any Victorian, including Cr Lyons, had the right to run for election.

“It’s his decision,” Mr Guy said.

“Would he win? He’s probably still popular in Geelong.

“I don’t live in Geelong, so what I get is second-hand but I think he’s got a fair following in Geelong. It wouldn’t surprise me if he stood again and won.”

Mr Guy said holding fresh council elections for Geelong in 2017 was a “sensible timeframe”.

He said any move to change the governance structure of Geelong, including adding a directly elected deputy mayor, should be held back and considered over the intervening 18 months.

Former long-serving Geelong state Labor MP Peter Loney said sacking the council was the easy part - changing the bureaucracy would be difficult.

“It reads like there was a Game of Thronesstyle stuff going on in the bureaucracy,” Mr Loney said.

“There’s some significant and serious stuff in there about way council bureaucracy behaved over a long period of time.

“Council officers deliberately undermined each of the elected mayors, Keith Fagg and Darryn Lyons.

“That sort of behaviour is anti-community and anti-democratic, it’s a culture of control where elected people don’t count.

“There are big issues coming out of that which the administrators will have to deal with.”

Mr Loney said the focus on Cr Lyons was misplaced and that he had sympathy for some of the councillors.

He also questioned WorkCover’s insignificant involvement, given that it was the state agency charge with handling workplace bullying complaints and would soon relocate to Geelong.

In Brief Saving distributed Geelong road commuters will save 20 minutes travelling to Melbourne after a State Government commitment to go it alone on funding a second Yarra River crossing, Premier Daniel Andrews has announced.

The Government had signed a deal with Transurban to build the $1.5-billion Western Distributor project despite failing to secure Commonwealth funding, Mr Andrews said.

Torquay ‘unprotected’ Torquay was “unprotected” amid an influx of tourists on Easter Saturday and Monday after the town’s police station closed for its day-shift, state parliament has heard.

South Barwon MP Andrew Katos asked why the station closed while also querying why police had slashed Geelong divisional van rosters from three a day to one.

That question was not fully answered in the Commission of Inquiry report but some clues were revealed during the sacking saga this week.

The report said a councillor used social media to retweet a description of a local citizen as a ‘Greek property parasite’.

“This egregious, racist comment undermined council’s reputation and community harmony,” the report said.

The comment was retweeted by Cr Jan Farrell.

Liberal MP for South Barwon Andrew Katos used parliamentary privilege to name Cr Andy Richards as one of the bullies.

Mr Katos claimed that Labor had given Cr Richards a role of undermining both directly elected mayors and creating a dysfunctional council.

But Cr Richards, Labor’s losing candidate for South Barwon in 2014, said Mr Katos lost all credibility when he used parliamentary privilege in a poor attempt to attack him.

“Mr Katos’s claims about Keith Fagg are rubbish and his claims that I am doing the Labor party’s bidding are equally false.”

But Cr Richards admitted “deep-seated, longterm problems with Geelong council from the leadership down”.

He said he supported the move to sack the council because it had been unable to fix the issues in a timely way.

Supalai chairman Prateep Tangmatitham and his 20 board representatives would inspect Balmoral Quay while touring the company’s Victorian investments and considering other “opportunities” in the state, the agency said.

Double Take ‘Be careful what you wish for’ goes the old adage but in the case of a local police Facebook page the advice could be modified as ‘Be careful what you warn of’.

Last Friday a post on the page advised that police were targeting local roads “as school holidays come to a close”.

The next post just over 12 hours later reported how a school-age boy in a stolen car had clipped a police vehicle while trying to evade arrest in northern Geelong.

In contrast to Friday’s warning, it sounds more like the school kids on holiday were targeting police on local roads.

The credibility fallout from the Geelong council bullying imbroglio has spread beyond City Hall to the floor of State Parliament.

The latest casualty was Bellarine MP Lisa Neville, who scored an own goal while apparently trying to tie the issue to embattled Mayor Darryn Lyons in Parliament on Tuesday.

“The fish rots from the head down,” she told her lower house colleagues.

Actually, the fish rots from the gut first, like most animals.

Since Ms Neville clearly misled Parliament, Double Take looks forward to her retraction.

As well as taking metaphors literally, politicians are also normally drawn to openings like moths to a flame. They’ll attend the opening of an envelope, especially when it offers a photo opportunity.

So it can only be bad planning when a minister misses the opening of a multi-milliondollar facility for a government organisation within their own portfolio.

Not even the minister assisting the minister could attend the opening of Geelong’s new Australian Bureau of Statistics national data office.

Only the local member was available.

The office was not quite excellent enough, it appears.

Corangamite MP. The ETU gleefully used social media to post an image of its corflute windfall, along with helpful commentary .

“If we needed confirmation that the Liberals have already committed to calling a double dissolution election of 2 July - this is it,” the ETU post said.

ETU state secretary Troy Gray was happy to take delivery and offer reassurance to the intended recipient.

“No worries Sarah, they’re in safe hands,” he posted.

“We’ll look after them.”

Double Take took a rare opportunity grab a bite in Westfield Geelong’s refurbished food court where a flat-screen TV perched above the central area flickered overhead.

But not a single patron payed it the slightest attention.

Unfortunately, the screen-saver was making whatever program was screening virtually unwatchable.

Oh, that’s why no one was watching.

FIFA-standard soccer pitch for ‘hub’ A FIFA-standard soccer pitch is on the way to Norlane’s Leisuretime Centre.

A $600,000 state grant and City Hall funds will deliver the synthetic pitch to transform the site into a “state-of-the-art soccer hub”, according to Sports Minister John Eren.

The pitch could also host other sports including AFL 9s, touch football and ultimate Frisbee, he said.

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Mandy Pattenden beat all odds to become Mrs John Brockway on Sunday.

Despite suffering terminal cancer, Mandy made it to the riverside altar to make her dream wedding a reality.

The Indy reported last week that a massive community effort helped the dying wish come true for the Meredith couple, with a flood of offers helping to organise the wedding in just a week.

“I haven’t seen Mandy smile like that in a long time,” said her sister, Cara Stansfield.

“The weather was perfect, it was nice and

sunny and there were just so many people there helping out, it was awesome.

“People who don’t even know us came from near and far and many others sent messages.

“Mandy absolutely loved the day, the whole ceremony and especially the red Mustang bridal car.

“Someone had organised butterflies to release because Mandy loves butterflies but instead of flying off they stayed around.

“Mandy loved the hall decorations. They were just amazing, we were gobsmacked. The food was incredible, there was so much donated it was enough to feed an army.

“Mandy was up for the whole day, she was partying at the reception. All the wonderful messages and help just lifted her spirits.”

A diagnosis of stage four bowel and liver cancer meant Mandy did not have much time left, Cara told the Indy last week.

Mandy was still in hospital only days before the wedding and had two nights at home after the ceremony before going back to the McKellar Centre for further treatment.

Cara said the family wanted the story told as a way of saying thank you to everyone who helped and highlighting the need for cancer awareness.

Thieves keep stealing booze from Geelong bottleshops despite a police strategy targeting repeat offenders.

Recent incidents include a thief taking two one-litre bottles of Jack Daniels at 1pm on Easter Sunday before returning seven hours later to swipe the same amount of Johnny Walker.

TWO TRIPS: A CCTV Police posted on image of the wanted Facebook an image of man a man they believed “may very well be able to assist them with their enquiries”.

“The offender is described as being male, Caucasian, mid-to-late 20s with short light brown hair (and) wearing a blue hoodie,” police posted.

“If you have any information regarding these offences you are requested to contact Senior Constable Niksic at the Waurn Ponds Police Station on 52473527 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”

Police have posted a series of calls for help with booze thefts over the past few months.

Alleged offenders have included pairs of men, individual women and suspected repeat offenders at bottleshops across the city.

Brazen thieves have been caught on surveillance cameras walking out of bottleshops with packages as large as slabs of beer.

Other incidents included a pair of men stealing two dozen bottles of bourbon from a Geelong West store before fleeing in a vehicle with a blonde female driver.

And borewater will further boost supplies, with Barwon Downs borefield being “readied for operation” for the first time since the last big dry.

The government said Barwon Water had ordered 6 billion litres from Melbourne after local storages fell to levels unseen “since the millennium drought”.

The storages held 34 per cent of capacity this week as Geelong water restrictions remained unchanged at the lowest level under Barwon Water’s permanent savings rules.

A 59km pipe costing $80 million will deliver the Melbourne water from the city’s Thomson/ Yarra catchment storage.

The government will be able to cover any transfers to Melbourne with water from Victoria’s $4 billion desalination plant at Wonthaggi.

The government recently ordered the first water from the plant since its completion more than three years ago.

The government said the Melbourne water would come with “no additional cost” for Geelong consumers.

“Geelong has continued to experience declining storage levels that have not been seen since the millennium drought”, Water Minister and Bellarine MP Lisa Neville said.

“Thankfully, the Melbourne to Geelong pipeline was constructed by the previous Labor Government as an insurance policy against future drought and will now be switched on for the first time to help provide the region with greater water security.

Penguins ‘come first for Neville’

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Bellarine MP Lisa Neville is more concerned about the security of St Kilda’s penguins than her own constituents, according to Weatern Victoria MP Simon Ramsay.

He said allocating $250,000 for CCTV to protect the penguins while failing to fund surveillance cameras for Drysdale showed the Environment Minister was out of touch with her electorate.

Drysdale and Clifton Springs Neighbourhood Watch had raised a required 10 per cent of funding for CCTV cameras in response to rising crime but the State Government denied the group’s requests for an infrastructure grant, Mr Ramsay said.

“It’s baffling that the Andrews Government considers protecting penguins more important than protecting the community of Drysdale,” Mr Ramsay said.

“A quarter of a million dollars has been allocated for CCTV at St Kilda’s penguin colony but the multiple requests to provide this security and safety measure to the Drysdale community continue to fall on deaf ears.

“It can only frustrate Minister Neville’s Bellarine

constituents to hear her describe the St Kilda surveillance as crucial when her own constituents are fearful for their safety.

“This town has experienced a 400 per cent rise in assaults since 2012 and a community Neighbourhood Watch has documented more than 15 assaults in the business precinct since the Andrews Government rose to power.

“The reduced opening hours of the Drysdale Police Station and the already stretched police resources allocated for the Bellarine only add to the growing crime rate.

“Residents will tell you that police officers are rarely sighted due to low staffing and a large area to cover from Ocean Grove to Clifton Springs.

“I just think it’s remarkable that the Andrews Government now rates penguin security higher than people security.”

Ms Neville provided a response describing Mr Ramsay’s comments as “absolutely disgraceful and just plain wrong”.

She blamed the former coalition government for neglecting the Drysdale community but made no mention of the camera funding issue.

Our ‘friend’ Tony willing to return

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Self-described friend of Geelong Tony Abbott could return to the region to campaign for one of the 54 coalition MPs who ousted him as prime minister.

A spokesman for Mr Abbott told the Indy his first priority was his own Warringah electorate but he would campaign for colleagues if asked.

Mr Abbott regularly visited Geelong before the 2013 federal election when Corangamite was Australia’s most marginal seat, helping win it from Labor for Liberal MP Sarah Henderson.

She holds the seat with a margin of 3.9 per cent.

But Ms Henderson voted to replace Mr Abbott with Malcolm Turnbull in the Liberal leadership spill last year after a series of negative polls. Latest polls show Mr Turnbull losing the election race to ALP leader Bill Shorten by two points.

Ms Henderson said every single vote would count in Corangamite.

“Prime Minister Turnbull has made it clear that a double dissolution election on 2 July is a possibility,” she said.

“This can be avoided if the senate acts responsibly and passes the Australian Building and Construction Commission and Registered Organisations Bills.

Book set for hands-on recognition

By LUKE VOOGT Geelong history writer Shirley Strachan will this month launch her book about influential local osteopath, Tom Bowen, celebrating the centenary of his birth.

He developed The Bowen Technique, an internationally recognised form of osteopathy that uses gentle manipulation of muscles and tissues to remediate physical imbalances identified during consultations.

Also a practitioner of Mr Bowen’s methods, Ms Stachan described him as a therapeutic genius who never earned the recognition he deserved.

“I could see there were a lot of historical problems surrounding Tom Bowen and that got me interested,” she said.

Primarily self-taught, Mr Bowen ran a practice for 20 years from 1959.

Ms Stachan said he treated more than 250,000 patients, including up to 56 a day, despite lacking formal training.

Mr Bowen was highly regarded among profes-

sional practitioners who came to watch him work, she said.

“He just had an innate natural ability.”

Ms Strachan said Mr Bowen “became a victim of the registration process” when he failed to satisfy the requirements of new regulatory legislation which was introduced in 1978.

During his registration exam he was forced to demonstrate his methods on a chair rather than a person, she said.

“That sort of testing put him at a real disadvantage.”

Mr Bown died three years later.

Ms Strachan conducted and transcribed about 50 interviews for her book between December 2014 and 2015, with the help of Ron Phelan, who conducted two interviews for the anthology.

Mr Phelan, a teacher-practitioner of Bowen therapy, was instrumental in co-ordinating a monument for him in West Park in 2002.

Ms Strachan is now completing a PhD on Bowen therapy, which will also complete his full biography.

Six trains set to return, two wait

By LUKE VOOGT Six more Geelong-Melbourne rail services will return on 26 April, State Government has announced.

But Geelong commuters will continue relying on bus replacements for two peak services – the 8.04am from South Geelong and the 5.40pm from Southern Cross – possibly until the middle of the year.

The resumption of rail services follows widespread disruptions on the Geelong-Melbourne line due to wheel-wear problems. Commuters have endured months of bus replacement services, with extended travel times.

Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said 97 per cent of V/Line services would back on track by 26 April, with the rest midyear.

More than 40 services returned last month. “Since January this year regional train passengers have been subject to unacceptable disruption,� Ms Allan said. “This is the next step in returning full V/Line

The previous government cut V/Line’s funding by $120 million, putting pressure on the company at a critical time in its development, she said.

V/Line, seeking a new chief executive officer, has released a repot detailing inadequate lubrication and rail and wheel wear as the main causes for the disruptions.

Public Transport Users Association Geelong branch convenor Paul Westcott said changes to the line’s route and increased services pushed V/ Line beyond its coping point. “V/Line just wasn’t ready for that level of service,� he said. “In theory it could have been predicted and the solutions are fairly simple. Wathaurong’s Mark Edwards said the two glass panels, to be fitted to the second floor main wall, were 1.5 square metres.

“One piece depicts a creation story and the other tells the story of how Geelong (Wathau-

rong) is the hub where all information will come together,” Mr Edwards said.

“I used journey lines to show how the information goes from across Australia and feeds into Geelong,” he said.

“The circles represent the capital cities and Alice Springs.”

Suppliers’ $21m issue with Target Employees at Geelong-headquartered national retailer Target have been disciplined for their role in negotiating inflated supplier contracts worth around $21 million.

Wesfarmers managing director Richard Goyder said “appropriate action is being taken against the Target employees who were found to be directly involved”.

“The investigation into this matter was swift and comprehensive. It identified that the full arrangements were not disclosed to Wesfarmers or its auditors,” Mr Goyder said.

“Target is now working with suppliers to unwind the arrangements.”

Mr Goyder said he was disappointed in the actions of those involved.

“There is no excuse for this conduct,” Mr Goyder said.

“We set very clear direction and expectations at Wesfarmers crystallised in our code of conduct and supported by detailed group policies, divisionally specific accounting policies, and regular staff training.

“We encourage and expect adherence to a strong culture of managing for longterm sustainable growth over short-term gain, which is regularly reinforced by the Wesfarmers board and which should have guided behaviour.

“Wesfarmers will take immediate action throughout the group to reinforce the importance of compliance with its policies and governance practices.”

The issue claimed Target managing director Stuart Machin last week when it emerged following a restructure. Mr Machin said he was unaware of the accounting issues but accepted his share of the responsibility.

The investigation found that rebates of $18.1 million and supply arrangements of less than $3 million did not conform to Wesfarmers accounting practices.

Up to 260 new jobs are on the way to Geelong after the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) opened its National Data Acquisition Centre in the city on Monday.

The centre opened on 10 April with 40 staff who were recruited from elsewhere in the ABS and the bureau plans to recruit another 80 fulltime and 20 part-time staff this month.

The ABS expected the centre to employ up to 180 workers full-time and 120 part-time once fully staffed by the middle of next year.

Statistician David Kalisch said the new centre was a key part of a $257 million five-year modernisation of ABS systems and processes.

“This centre is playing an important role in the transformation of the ABS so we can deliver the best statistics in more innovative and efficient ways,” Mr Kalisch said.

“The ABS is one of Australia’s most trusted organisations and our data is the bedrock on which Australians build an understanding of their economy and society.

“Our transformation program will enable us to continue to provide that vital information.”

Mr Kalisch said the centre would consolidate the collection of data for all business and household surveys.

“In the past, data collection operations have been located in offices all over Australia,” Mr Kalisch said.

“Moving to one location streamlines processes and ensures the ABS continues to deliver better results and more value to tax payers.

“The purpose built office in Geelong is utilising new technology to give Australians more and easier methods of interacting with us.

“As technology changes, so will we in order to make it as easy as possible for Australians to provide us with reliable information and more easily access our data.”

44% support? What a laugh!

I laughed when reading last week’s Indy story headlined ‘44% back Lyons in Labor ‘safe seat’.

Forty-four per cent of a survey of a whopping 38 people equals 17 people.

Having just finished reading a story headlined ‘Not a lot of love for Lyons’, about a survey of 600 Corio residents, a survey of 38 people seemed ludicrous and unreliable. The other survey found he had a following of only 10 per cent.

Perhaps the respondents had Googled Darryn Lyons’ background and discovered his failed company.

He may well have lots of ideas and flair but thank goodness he was not the sole decisionmaker on council finances and that other people did the accounting at City of Greater Geelong.

Anyone who hasn’t done so should Google him to read some articles. They prove most enlightening.

Please Indy, do not insult the intelligence of Geelong readers by suggesting that such a tiny survey had any value whatsoever.

Electric cars need stable supply Until recent years thoughts of electric cars have been as fanciful as horseless carriages were in the 1890s.

But progress marches on and the advent of fuel-less vehicles is on the near horizon.

The thinking man’s concerns about the hazards of very long cords has been recognised and deemed impractical.

But the alternative of queuing up to plug in to a barrage of batteries for recharging is also unattractive to motorists.

We once owned a Lada, which was similar to an electric car: it got us from Anglesea to Maldon but didn’t guarantee to bring us back, making the old Cobb & Co seem coach more reliable.

The Lada failed us once too often and was traded-in on a more co-operative vehicle.

Back in the old coaching days fresh horses were always available at stables along the way, so maybe there’s an opening for battery-exchange depots, like gas bottle replacements, to compensate servo owners for the loss of fuel sales.

Scapegoat mayor threatened Labor control The Andrews Government this week played out the final act in the death of a mayor by 1000 cuts.

The irony was that it also took out the whole council in order to get rid of Darryn Lyons.

The Commission of Inquiry report into Geelong’s council raised more questions than it answered.

Why Cr Lyons the only councillor named, given council’s history of workplace bullying?

Why were only elected representatives tarred with the same brush and sacked?

Why didn’t the report name and shame council staff accused of bullying?

Cr Lyons inherited a governance system that was not his friend. He is now its scapegoat.

Labor sees him as a threat to its control of Geelong.

Labor wants its own henchmen to run the city beyond the next state election in order

to push through a governance model without community consultation, denying ratepayers the right to vote for their own representatives.

Why can’t the administrators simply do the job until scheduled local government elections in October?

Thankfully, the legislative council will rationally investigate and debate Labor’s politically expedient legislation and hopefully restore a democratic vote as soon as possible.

Councillors who represented their constituency with honesty, commitment and hard work have been branded by the actions of other councillors and staff who brought the council into disrepute without being named in the report.

Only one person was allegedly guilty.

Readers can draw their own conclusions as to why.

Higher bills for less power The media is saturated with stories of how wonderful wind and solar energy are but the facts tell a different story In 2000, Germany enacted its Energiewende, or energy transition, policy to phase out nuclear and fossil fuels for replacement with mainly solar and wind.

German electricity prices are now the highest in the industrialised world, about twice France, which has nuclear power, and three times the US. German subsidies for wind and solar are estimated to be over $30 billion this year and for this about $5 billion of electricity is delivered.

In 2014 Germany’s 25,000 wind turbines operated at 14.8 per cent of their rated 40GW capacity due to lack of wind and averaged around 6GW for the year.

These 25,000 wind turbines could be replaced by three Loy Yang A coal stations to produce the same output power.

Having to buy all output from intermittent wind and solar at high cost regardless of whether it is needed is badly effecting Germany’s major power companies, with layoffs of about 30,000 and losses of around $70 billion since 2011.

It is estimated that 3800km of ugly new highvoltage transmission lines will need to be built across the country at astronomical cost to cater for wind and solar expansion.

It is estimated that up to 800,000 German homes have had their power cut off because they were unable to pay the country’s rising electricity bills.

The Energiewende is destroying the German economy.

Four Australian music legends will join forces to bring their classic hits to Geelong next month.

The talents of Kate Ceberano, Daryl Braithwaite, John Paul Young and Jon Stevens will combine for this year’s APIA Good Times tour.

Each artist will play a solo set before sharing the stage in a quartet finale backed by a six-piece band.

But it won’t be the first time Ceberano has performed alongside John Paul Young.

A teenage Ceberano played with the Scottishborn Australian singer in her early days while she was performing in an alternative funk band I’m Talking.

Ceberano said the Good Times tour was a rare opportunity for Aussie stars to perform as a collective.

“It’s not often you get the opportunity to do a group tour,“ she told the Indy.

“It’s kind of weird. Australian acts don’t seem to fraternise too much.

“People think we meet up to jam but that’s not the case.

“We haven’t started rehearsals yet but performing is like breathing for us these days. It’ll be more about finding a connection and camaraderie so we can get into a bit of a rhythm because everyone has their casting on the stage.

“The great thing about this tour is that audiences also bring all of their memories of our music with them to our shows and it’s a really fun night.“ Ceberano said she was also in the process of producing a three-disc compilation of her greatest hits.

“It’s been a bit therapeutic really, it’s a bit like going back in time,“ she said.

“The things that count are your humble beginnings.“

An “extreme arts” Mountain to Mouth walk returns to Geelong next month with a series of art installations featured along the route.

The biannual 80 kilometre walk begins at the You Yangs before crossing Geelong’s industrial heartland at nightfall before participants arrive in the city centre to coincide with a Geelong After Dark festival.

At dawn the following day the walk follows a Barwon River track to reach the river mouth by sunset, with 12 art installations by local artists along the way.

Artistic director Meme McDonald said her involvement in Mountain to Mouth had been the highlight of her career.

“Community groups carry a five-metre long canoe throughout the two-day walk. It’s very unique in that it’s created for the event and burnt at the end of the journey,” Ms McDonald said.

The walk is open to all with participants able to walk the full distance or one or more stages.

Mountain to Mouth runs from 6 to 7 May.

ARIA award-winning Mic Conway will bring his touring comedy, music and magic show to Drysdale next week.

The Street of Dreams tour features the entertainer of Circus Oz and Captain Matchbox fame teaming up with talented friend Matthew Fagan.

Known uniquely as a 10-string Spanish guitarist, Fagan will open the evening’s performances with his solo set, Lord of the Strings, which involves interchanging between four instruments including Celtic steel string and resonator guitars and a tenor ukulele throughout the show.

The night will feature some Captain Matchbox favourites such as My Canary Has Circles Under His Eyes and a rendition of Masochism Tango as well as a swag of Conway including Jug Band Man, which featured on Spicks and Specks in September 2011.

“Conway’s vaudeville performance is always a highlight,” Fagan said.

“He does flame and sword swallowing, which is highly entertaining, and other acts of illusion.

“It’s beyond the normal scope of your typical musical performance. It’s more like going to a circus; people in the audience are always laughing and gasping.

“He’s brought the age of vaudeville to modern times. There’s even aspects of Berlin cabaret in the show.”

Fagan has toured with a number of celebrities over the years, including Natalie Cole, Shirley Bassey, Michael Crawford and Billy Connolly, who has become a “life-long mentor”.

Fagan said he planned to tour the UK, Germany and Italy later this year and was inspired to incorporate more theatrical elements to expand his live show.

He has also been invited to perform at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in June.

Street of Dreams begins at 7.30pm on Wednesday at Drysdale’s Potato Shed.

Geelong and Surf Coast Limousines owner Lyn Sammit is one of just two female drivers in the Geelong region.

The Geelong grandmother often finds herself doing trips to wineries, or hen’s nights, where her client has requested a female driver.

“I had a pack of ‘nuns’ in car the other night, so that was fun,” she says.

Lyn got into the business three years ago when her husband bought her first limousine.

“My dearest husband had a brainwave and said ‘here dear, have a limousine’,” she says.

The business has grown and Lyn now has a stretch limo, a super-stretch limo, and four licensed and insured drivers, including herself.

She also has a 12-seat minibus and a town car available.

For Lyn the best part of the job is seeing happy faces, and she prides herself on providing a safe and courteous drive.

She’s got some regular clients who book her for summer festivals each year, like a Day on the Green in Mt Duneed.

“Last year I got to listen to Sir Elton John’s last three songs, so that was amazing,” she says.

St Leonards held fish to 38cm, with bag-limit captures taken quickly by anglers on the right marks.

The Queenscliff whiting were larger but harder to catch, although persistent anglers still achieved baglimit captures.

Fresh tenderised squid was the clear standout bait, especially on the larger fish.

Leon Robbins fished Queenscliff Harbour on Monday night for squid, landing seven while casting jigs around the moored boats. Other anglers fishing inside the harbour over the past week caught silver trevally on Gulp turtleback worms cast into the cut with 1/8oz jig heads during the last of the incoming tide.

The Barwon River estuary continued producing elephant fish in large numbers. The Thunder-

bolt area upstream fished well for anglers using strips of fresh squid, which also attracted the odd mulloway.

Emily Whitford fished the estuary for elephants to 1.98kg on 1kg line. Silver trevally were also caught, some almost 40cm.

The estuary also numerous juvenile tailor, which plagued anglers’ baits.

Anglers spinning rock platforms along the Great Ocean Road caught Australian salmon. Tackleworld Geelong’s Michael Moore caught a salmon of around 1.5kg while spinning with metal lures from rocks near Kennet River.

Andrew Orchard and Bruce Munro ventured out from Apollo Bay for a great session in 50m off Marengo. Drifting baits, they boated numerous flathead and a nice-sized gummy shark on octopus and salmon baits.

Freshwater fishing is really starting to fire, promising an exceptional season over winter.

Adam Van Der Lugt and Ross Gould began fishing Wurdee Boluc Reservoir before daybreak on

midfield group.

For Scott, that means the development of Josh Caddy, Cam Guthrie and Mitch Duncan as much as stars Joel Selwood and Patrick Dangerfield.

The coaches know what the stars will provide on a regular basis but an opportunity to instil a form line for the rest of the midfield group will be invaluable.

Adam was still battling his fish when Ross hooked a 2.8kg brown on a Fish Arrow soft plastic.

Both fish were in remarkable condition, which gave the duo a run for their money on light tackle.

Andrew Orchard tried Lake Purrumbete. While trolling slowly around 7am, he caught a 2.5kg Chinook salmon on a flat-lined Daiwa Double Clutch lure.

AFTER Geelong’s mauling of the Lions, the clash with a suspension-weakened Essendon is being seen widely as another percentage booster.

On paper it should be, but the topsy-turvy start to the season has teams – and coaches in particular – wary.

It used to be that if sides were 10 per cent off they would get rolled, but that seems to have reduced to five per cent in the opinion of Cats veteran Jimmy Bartel.

“You’ve got to respect everyone. We’ve already seen that if you’re off by five per cent, you get beaten,” Bartel observed this week.

As proof, Essendon surprised Melbourne in round two with a fighting win, even though normal service resumed last week with a thumping at the hands of Port Adelaide.

Coach Chris Scott also sees the league table as unsettled after three rounds, with even the teams with no wins to their name yet capable of rising.

Nevertheless, Essendon presents a significant opportunity for Geelong, even though former team-mates will be pitted against each other for the third week in a row.

Mathew Stokes and James Kelly have been solid performers for the Bombers, although still strange sights in the red and black.

Even though the game is a Saturday afternoon at the MCG, it is being billed as a country clash, dreamed up by master spruiker Kevin Sheedy to help bolster the ailing Essendon.

It could get ugly, with the Cats averaging 105 points a game while conceding only 77 this season, while the Bombers have averaged just 63 points a game and have conceded 100 points each week.
