Big festival milestone President’s Message WELL we have reached a milestone in the history of Yakkerboo. This year marks his 40th birthday. Who would have thought all those years ago, way back in 1976 when the festival first started, that he would still be going 40 years on? It is a credit to all the dedicated past and present committee people. If it weren’t for them, we would not have a festival. And of course if it weren’t for the Cardinia Shire’s continued support by way of a grant, we could not keep going. We are always looking for more volunteers to join the committee and if you’re interested email admin@yakkerboo.org.au and we can let you know when our next meeting will be. I hope we have sunshine on the day. It was a hard decision last year to cancel the parade for what I believe was the first time in its history and I don’t want to do that again. This year we have got access to the LLINC building, so if we get a storm everyone can at least take cover inside and we can wait to see if it passes, but fingers crossed it doesn’t come to that. This year we will see a rather new-looking Mr Yakkerboo after his makeover. The original Mr Yakkerboo was made of scales which school children in the area had made, each scale had the child’s name on the inside. This remained until some years back when local youths broke into his storage shed and set him alight. The second version was made from chicken wire and hessian cloth and painted with body filler in a camouflage of greens. However time was taking its toll, and with wear and tear Mr Yakkerboo was starting to fall apart and was in desperate need of a makeover. The latest version thanks to a local resident,

The committee thanks David for the many hours he put in doing the refurbishment, it was a huge job that has taken months of hard work to complete. He will look in between the first two versions, gone is the camouflage look, he will be a nice bright, cheerful green with darker green patches and a much happier looking face. Because it is our 40th year, we have invited past Yakkerboo queens or princesses to enter our parade, we have a few interested and it’s not too late to join them, email admin@yakkerboo.org.au if you’re interested. It would be great to see a few more join them in the parade.

The Cardinia Shire continues to grow at a rapid pace, with many new families moving in every week, and if you are one of them and you are wondering what the Yakkerboo Festival is, well it starts on the Saturday night, 16 April in Bourke Park when Browns Amusements run a carnival from dusk, rides are usual carnival prices. Then at 9pm we have a fireworks display. Please bring your pets inside before 9pm. Then the main event is on the Sunday, 17 April. We have a cavalcade of unique vehicles at 10.45am starting along John Street (see the map in this issue for the exact route) then straight after that we have the parade made up of entries from local schools, kinders, child minding centers, sporting clubs etc. We close off Main Street in Pakenham be-

tween the two roundabouts and Station Street and we have markets stalls, food vendors, some small rides and all businesses are encouraged to open and even have a stall out the front. Then we have the rides, entertainment and some more market stalls in Bourke Park. We celebrate Mr Yakkerboo’s birthday by giving the children a piece of birthday cake kindly donated every year by the Great Australian Bakehouse. Then we give out free icy poles thanks to the original Woolworths Pakenham and also free cordial, all this takes place on the stage shelter in Bourke Park. It is important for everyone to note that this year we are charging $5 for an all-day wristband that entitles the wearer to unlimited rides all day, this is to allow us to be more self-sufficient and not rely so heavily on the shire’s grant. All the smaller kiddie type rides remain free, you only need the wristband for the bigger rides. The wristbands will be on sale at the shelter in Bourke Park and it would be great if everyone can bring correct money. The wristbands must remain on the wrist, if removed or lost the carnival, staff will not let you on the ride and you will have to buy another band. Thanks to Browns Amusements who have again kindly donated two bikes, one boy’s and one girl’s, and they will be raffled on the day with tickets on sale for just $2 in front of the sound shelter. There will also be our usual raffle with goods kindly donated by local businesses. We will have a full list of the prizes and who donated them on the day. A huge thank-you to all the businesses that have donated, without your support we would not have a raffle. I hope everyone has a great day out. Yakkerboo still unites the community 40 years on Former Shire of Pakenham CEO Ray Canobie came up with the concept of the Yakkerboo Festival more than four decades ago. This edited extract of a speech he gave to a dinner 10 years ago to mark the 30th anniversary explains its origins. LET’S step back in time. The Cardinia Shire community and Pakenham township in particular were markedly different in 1975. In those days there was a strong sense of community where it simply wasn’t possible to be detached. “Pitching in” to help your mate, neighbour or one of the community causes was simply part of the way of life in the district. During the 1950s and ‘60s we had seen the adverse effects of rapid population growth in the western end of the old Shire of Berwick and that wasn’t a path we wanted to go down if it could be avoided. It was an interesting observation in those days. The more urbanised the a district became, the greater the proportionate drop-off in community participation – something that probably holds true today. Such was the difference in attitude and values that in 1973 the western portion of the old shire was excised to create the City of Berwick – a municipality which was prepared to charge higher rates in lieu of the self-help attitude which prevailed in the remainder of the shire. People in the intensely urbanised areas seemed accepting of higher rates providing they were excused from vol-

It was a markedly different philosophy from what we knew in the country. So we had something special in this neck of the woods – something worth trying to preserve. Although the benefits of our community values were obvious, and not just in financial terms, we occasionally (not often) looked upon ourselves as being somewhat the poorer cousins of the city slickers. There was a genuineness amongst the

people – a sincerity to do what was right by one another, but sadly we may not have always enjoyed the highest self-esteem. I was pondering this issue in late 1974 as a relatively newly appointed deputy shire secretary – a bit like a deputy CEO in today’s terminology. I wrote a report to the council suggesting the establishment of a festival committee to promote the achievements of local people and groups within and be-

yond the shire – to nurture local talent and to promote pride in ourselves – and of course to have heaps of fun doing it! I can visualise that report now and years later recall the emotions I felt in dictating it. In a personal sense, it may have been a defining moment in developing my own community values, which I hope have been evident in my career ever since. Whilst not exactly jumping for joy when they read the report, the council-

lors nevertheless agreed with the proposal. But it was clear they didn’t want to add to their workload and if the notion of a new festival was to come to fruition, it would be largely my job to make it happen in the initial stages. It’s a truism isn’t it: the person making suggestions invariably ends up undertaking them. My strategy was to initially involve the community powerbrokers – people like the late Peter Ronald and the late David Bourke, men who had the capacity to give their imprimatur which would be seen as a strong endorsement of the concept. A well-attended public meeting was held, with around 40 people in attendance. Roy Walden, a long-time Pakenham resident and former president of the outdoor swimming pool, was our first president and I agreed to look after the secretarial and financial aspects. Sub-committees were formed with representatives from progress associations far and wide. I remember Bob Utber, Ian Thomas, Cheryl McInnes and a little later Norm Lemin (who actually constructed Mr Yakkerboo), Harry and Betty James, Merryl Waterhouse, Sue Blenkhorn, Michael Bishop and Marie Nichol, who took over from me a few years later, were heavily involved in the early stages. So we had enthusiasm and community support.

Decades later it is widely known and to my mind still has that magical and mysterious ring to it typified by the mythical Mr Yakkerboo. I jumped at the name because I could see a synergy with clothing manufacturer Yakka and promptly sought sponsorship from them. Unfortunately I was just as quickly disappointed – it would take more than a catchy name to draw the dollars, we needed to show some results before expecting people to invest with us. The format for that very first festival was remarkably similar to today. The two feature events were the festival ball and the crowning of the Yakkerboo Queen and of course the float parade. The ball kicked off the 10-day festival and was always a roaring success. Most townships would nominate a representative (known as a princess)

Of course, we had other attractions – a Yakkerboo baby each year, a bowls tournament, glass blowing, a disco, an art show and a short story competition. In fact, it was a rather comprehensive program of events for our first attempt. Those early days of Yakkerboo taught us about the power of communities – their enormous capacity to rise to challenges. Again, that holds true today. Communities which share a dream are more likely to enthusiastically support it. Sure, there remain difficulties in attracting people to committees and too much is left to too few. But then, when the planning comes to fruition, almost remarkably the community is there to celebrate and, through their attendance, demonstrate to organisers how much their efforts are appreciated. Communities achieve little in the absence of leadership and Yakkerboo has been very important in community development, showcasing achievement and bringing us all together. For my part, I don’t want to live where there is no longer a sense of community, a sense of belonging or where people no longer contribute to the wellbeing of others. In the face of rampant development, it will be very difficult to preserve those characteristics that made this Cardinia community so unique. But it’s important we give it everything we have got and to the current and past Yakkerboo volunteers and committee members, on behalf of the community, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. I salute you all and am immensely grateful you have kept the dream alive.

It was not surprising people were prepared to get involved. We needed a catchy name for our festival. For my part I wanted something that would grab people’s attention and mentioned I was looking for something out of left field - something catchy. I even mentioned ‘Shishkabab”, knowing that wasn’t appropriate, but something radical like that was needed. It was in vogue in those days to seek the community’s views, which we did through a public advertisement and liaison with community groups, including schools. From this came the suggestion of Yakkerboo, which was the Aboriginal word for place of green pastures. In the early days, I found non-local people greeted the name with derision. Yakker what? What is a Yakkerboo?

That first festival ball featured well known comedian Colin McKeown, who recently passed away from cancer and a 3MP radio personality whose silky smooth tones made it all very professional at our first attempt. I had my heart in my mouth over the street parade. Would the community and business interests support it? Could we attract enough entrants to put on a worthwhile show? We need not have worried; it was a resounding success. From memory we had 50 separate entries for the parade, which proceeded smoothly with the assistance of the local CFA. The parade assembled at the old recreation reserve (now P.B Ronald Reserve). Along with 3UL (now 3GG) sports reporter Tony Osler, I stood on top of the verandah of Noel Webster’s real estate agency on the corner of Main and John streets to do the commentary. Talk about watching our Ps and Qs! ‘N.N.’ had been reluctant to give us permission to use the verandah because of safety issues and the possibility that the roof might be damaged. We carted up a few boards to stand on and hung on to a microphone to keep our balance. It couldn’t happen today! A better than expected crowd witnessed the first street parade, but nothing like the crowds today. I was chuffed. Standing atop Main Street, I had seen a dream become reality. We had done it, although there was never any thought that it would continue to draw crowds who revel in Cardinia on show.

and then support her in attending the crowning ceremony. In doing so, local communities were drawn together culminating in a broader, shire-wide focus. Some girls became involved in local fundraising for community causes, which added another dimension to their involvement. A three-person judging panel under the chairmanship of (Pakenham MP) Rob Maclellan had the difficult task of choosing which entrant would be the winner – enjoying a holiday on the Gold Coast courtesy of Rod Webster at Pakenham Travel. For Rob Maclellan, the job wasn’t over until he partnered the newly crowned queen on a lap of the dance floor, which must have been a huge ordeal for the young lady. Incidentally, I remember borrowing, probably without permission, the shire president’s or mayor’s chair from the council chambers, which became the throne on the night. It was a rather sacrosanct item of furniture, certainly not something to be trivialised for an ulterior purpose and when it appeared in the photos of the crowning ceremony, questions began to be asked how it got there. I think that’s when I first noticed my memory began to fail me. The festival ball was almost always held in the public hall, but on one occasion – perhaps it was the first one – the school assembly hall was used. I was asked to compere proceedings and being extremely nervous, mixed up the introduction cards when announcing the princesses and overlooked one poor girl entirely. To this day, that bungling attempt haunts me whenever I’ve been asked to compere a function.

Queens for a day By GARRY HOWE TO help celebrate the 40th anniversary, the Yakkerboo Festival Committee has invited former Princess and Queen entrants to participate in Sunday’s parade. At this stage two former Princesses - Karen Murphy (Aurish) and Davina Ann Veenstra (Thompson) have agreed to participate, although the committee would love to hear from any others willing to participate. Karen and Yakkerboo go back a long way. She can remember contributing a scale for Mr Yakkerboo’s back as a student at St Pat’s Primary School. “We thought we were the bee’s knees when we did that - we were famous,” she recalls. “You look at Yakkerboo now and it’s like he has shrunk. He looked so big to us back then.” Karen was a Princess in the second year of the quest, 1977. The Queen that year Kerri Bolch (Monckton), now principal of Berwick Secondary College, was the only one to go on to represent Yakkerboo in the Moomba Parade in Melbourne. Karen has been a regular at Yakkerboo, attending in various capacities as her life evolved and she became involved with kindergartens, schools, the netball club and Angela’s Dance Academy. “I remember one year it was a space theme and we all dressed up as little ETs,” she said. “It abso-

It was a miserable day, but a lot of fun.” When invited to participate again this year, Karen asked the dress code and was told to dress like she was a princess again. “Back in 1977 I had this pink taffeta number, which was good in its heyday, but I’m not sure I’ll squeeze into that again, so I had better go out and buy a dress.” Karen will be joined at the weekend by Davina, the 1988 Bunyip Princess, who remembers being paraded down Main Street sitting on a

hay bale in her mother’s Mini Moke. Her parents were part of a Mini Moke club based in the Dandenongs and she has been in touch with the club to try to source one for this weekend’s parade. Coordinator of the Bunyip and District Community House, Davina married painter and decorator Ray Veenstra, whose family had the old Coffee Palace in Pakenham and the Robin Hood Hotel near Drouin. She was coaxed into the quest by the Bunyip Young Farmers, which has since disbanded.

Art show celebrates a creative milestone THE Yakkerboo 40th anniversary celebrations are not confined to this weekend, with the annual art show set to also toast the milestone next month. “It is time to party and celebrate 40 years of creativeness in Cardinia Shire, ” Yakkerboo Art Show president Jillian Ronald said. “We have a lot of special events planned. I am looking forward to seeing which of our colourful characters in Cardinia Shire will be entered in our Pakenham Portraits Category.” Opening night is Friday 27 May from 7-10pm. Tickets can be purchased at the door; $15 per head. This includes light supper, drinks, catalogue and live entertainment from Out of Thin Air. The wonderful dramatic Wearable Art Parade is back and another highlight is a visual presentation of previous years of Yakkerboo Art and memories. Awards and prizes totalling over $8000 will be announced by our judges: Mark Fawcett, manager of the Cardinia Cultural Centre, and Mary Hollick, senior lecturer at Federation University Australia. Cardinia mayor Jodie Owen will open the show and MC for the night will be Bass MP Brian Paynter. Cardinia’s Community Art Show since 1976 is giving people an opportunity to unleash their inner artist, with Come and Try Days on Saturday 28 May and Sunday 29 May. On Saturday you can have a go at water based oil paints. On Sunday it’s pencil and watercolour. An artist will be on hand to help get you started and demonstrate their skills. General viewing is 10am-4pm. The $2 entry includes catalogue and live entertainment. “We are expecting 150 artists to be represented and 500 artworks on display,” Jillian said. “It is a great value event for the whole family. Put the last weekend in May in your diary and we shall see you there.”

A GROUP of local parents will simultaneously change their babies’ cloth nappies next Saturday in an effort to break a world record. Mother of three Victoria McInnes brought the international Great Cloth Diaper Change (GCDC) event to Australia in 2011, which aims to set a new record each year for the most nappies changed within a 24-hour period. In an Australian first, this year’s only Victoria-based event will be held in Pakenham, led by Ms McInnes and Kooweerup resident Kershel Elliott. Last year, 7441 people were involved across 18 countries and six continents. This year there will be 227 GCDC events in 19 countries including Belgium, the United States, Great Britain, Japan and South Africa, with four events taking place in Australia. More than two billion used nappies go into landfill sites in Australia each year and over 95 per cent of Australian parents use disposable nappies, according to recent figures. “The current world record is 10,029, which we set in 2013,“ Ms McInnes said. “We’re holding this year’s event in Pakenham to bring local awareness to the many benefits of using modern cloth nappies and to gather cloth nappy lovers from around Cardinia, Gippsland and the Bass Coast to take part in a fun event connecting cloth nappy users from all around the world. “Parents may arrive with their baby in either a disposable or a cloth nappy. But all babies must be changed into a 100 per cent reusable cloth nappy. “It is not a race but all participants begin the change at the same time. Then we submit our local results and wait to hear whether a world record has been broken.“ An official photo will be taken before and after the change for photographic evidence. Beauty has a purpose A CARDINIA Lakes beauty pageant contestant will fight for a wildcard place in the Miss World Australia national final. Having failed to place at the preliminary contest on 26 to 27 February in Geelong, Kayleigh Graffin hopes to impress the judges with her fundraising campaign for Variety. The 18-year-old plans to hold local events in the coming months, including a high tea, to raise money for the children’s charity which aims to enable disadvantaged, disabled and sick children to overcome obstacles in their lives. Miss World events co-ordinator Jen Reynoldson said contestants are judged on their personality and runway performance. “Personality is defined through their introduction and the Q&A section which is revolved around current affair issues,” Ms Reynoldson said. “There are four preliminary stages in Victoria from which the state finalists are chosen. There will be 30 women chosen to compete in the state final later this year. “With the organisation coming under new directorship by long-term influencer in the industry - Deborah Miller change is in the air.

The winner of the Miss World pageant will spend her 12-month reign travelling to represent the Miss World Organisation and its various causes, attending media appearances and appearing in campaigns. Ms Graffin was born in Ireland and has lived in Pakenham for the past eight years. She said her involvement in Miss World Australia, her first pageant event, has helped her confidence. “I’ve always been quite shy and it’s helped me step out of my shell a bit,” Ms Graffin said. “It was a bit scary at first. Being my first pageant, it felt like a whole new world. But it’s been great fun and a huge learning experience.” Having completed high school at the end of last year, the 18-year-old has received an offer to study a bachelor degree in psychology and law. Six years for killing mate By ANEEKA SIMONIS THE YOUNG drunken driver who drove a Pakenham Upper man to his death in a horrific high-speed car crash in Beaconsfield last year has been jailed. Michael Berwick, 23, was killed when his intoxicated friend Joseph Kirpichnikov, 23, lost control of the car which flipped and crashed in the early hours of the morning at Brunt Road, Beaconsfield, on 17 April 2015 Kirpichnikov, from Officer, was jailed for six years in the Victorian County Court on Wednesday 13 April. The sentence comes almost a year after Michael was taken from his loving family- parents John and Vicki Berwick and sister Alexandra. Michael was studying mechanical engineering at Swinburne University of Technology when he was killed.

Colleges take their cue from sporting gifts STUDENTS studying VCAL at ECG College Pakenham are enjoying a sport and recreational approach to their learning thanks to a donation from Mt Hira College in Keysborough. A billiard table and sporting equipment including tennis rackets, basketballs, footballs, volleyballs and softballs have been donated by Mt Hira to support ECG College, which offers VCAL as an option for young people who are unable to stay in a mainstream school to complete senior secondary studies. ECG college principal Sue Geals said the donation had already made an impact on student learning and personal development. “Teaching staff have harnessed the enthusiasm students have for sport and competition to use it as a springboard to teach literacy and numeracy and to build confidence and teamwork. The students have also initiated a pool competition which has assisted in building rapport across ages and class groups.” To express their thanks, ECG College Pakenham students organised and catered for a special morning tea for Mt Hira’s principal Sareh Salarzadeh and head of school Nadir Yildiz.

New pitch to bring out their best By ALANA MITCHELSON THE first stage of the IYU Recreation Reserve project is complete, with council hoping the pitches will be ready in time for the winter soccer season. This phase saw the development of a full-sized senior soccer field and a multi-use pitch that can be used as either two junior fields or a single senior field. Each of the fields has a

sand base, drainage, irrigation, drought-tolerant turf and access to a sustainable water source. Eastern Victoria Region MP Daniel Mulino and Cardinia Shire mayor Jodie Owen visited the site on Thursday. Cr Owen said the readiness of the pitches for the winter season will depend on grass-growing conditions. “The new fields will be one of the highlights of the

season for the clubs,” she said. “It’s fantastic to see the project underway for the young aspiring athletes in Cardinia Shire.” The State Government will provide $3.5 million and council has contributed about $2.4 million to the second stage of the project that will include a synthetic soccer pitch, pavilion, floodlighting and a playground. These works are due to be completed by February 2017.

This donation to ECG College is a way of helping another small school as it begins its journey in sup-

porting young people to engage with learning to strengthen their future,” Ms Salarzadeh said. ECG College is a not-forprofit independent school established by Community College Gippsland to provide an option for young people to complete senior secondary studies in a more adult learning environment. ECG College has campuses at Warragul, Leongatha and Pakenham. The Pakenham campus, located at the corner of The Avenue and Princes Highway, opened in 2015 and has 25 students.

Friends build bridges By LACHLAN MOORHEAD ALMOST 20 years since the 1999 East Timorese crisis, the sovereign state is still re-building. For most of that time the Friends of Ermera, through its partnership with the City of Casey, has been pivotal in contributing to that re-build. But the Friends of Ermera, whose members are based in Casey and regularly travel to the Timorese district, couldn’t do what they do without a lot of help from Timorese contributors who act as their eyes and ears on the ground. Lola Maia is one of these invaluable helpers. The Timorese-born 28-year-old is the Community Development Worker for the Friends of Ermera. Based in East Timor, Lola’s role sees her work closely with the Friends of Ermera Commission based in Timor, and visits projects and programs being undertaken as part of the initiative. Lola landed in Australia last week - her first visit to the country - and will spend the next month in discussions with representatives of the City of Casey to strengthen the partnership between Ermera and Casey Council, while also visiting various friendship schools in the municipality. “It’s really important,” Lola told Star News. “What the community in East Timor really need is to build a better life and support families and support all the youth that are studying in senior school and junior high school. “Education is very important.” Lola knows more than a little about East Timor and education. The community worker and her husband, Andre, have two children - five-year-old daughter Stefania and two-year-old son Stefanio - and live in a small village known as Lauala,

Having worked in her role for the last five years, Lola has been instrumental in helping to organise Ermera’s women’s groups, scholarships for school students, kindergarten programs, and many other projects. ensured we get proposals,” Jan said. “She works with the commission and goes out and visits the group, then recommendations are made.” Lola previously taught English to children in Cambodia and Malaysia, an experience that Jan said put her in great stead as she taught the same lessons to kids in Ermera. “Since 1999, Timor has had to choose which language it uses, and develop its own curriculum for schools,” Jan said.

Dodged a ‘big bullet’ A SERIAL drug trafficker has been told by a judge that he dodged a “big bullet” after his suspended two-year jail term was ruled “nonvalid”. Max Markham, 31, of Narre Warren, faced Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 11 April with the jail time hanging over his head after last year being convicted over a long list of charges between 2012 and 2014. The offences included dangerous driving, drug driving, exceeding

the speed limit by 45 km/h or more, disqualified driving and trafficking ecstasy and ice. On 11 April, magistrate Jack Vandersteen found the suspended sentence was invalid because the two-year jail term was greater than its operational period of 12 months. “It’s a non-valid sentence. He’s dodged a big bullet.” Mr Vandersteen, however, jailed Markham for 180 days on a dozen new charges in Berwick and Frankston North, including trafficking ice, possessing GHB, proceeds

of crime, disqualified driving and breaching bail. The offences occurred between March 2015 and February this year while Markham was on a 12-month community corrections order. He had spent the past 67 days in pre-sentence custody. When released from jail on 2 August, Markham will re-start the community corrections order because “he can run riot and out of control very quickly”, Mr Vandersteen said. The supervised order will include drug and mental health treat-

A devastated Ms Sheldon said Eve would have given birth to a palomino foal by now. “I have no leads, no-one has contacted me and I have

been posting missing advertisements on hundreds of different Facebook pages and I’m still finding more,” she said. Buster and Eve shared a paddock with about 30 other horses when they went missing and Ms Sheldon has since removed her other horses from the Clyde adjistment. IN RESPONSE to your article Bomb Stops Street (News, 6 April), I’d like to clarify the action taken by our staff in response to the unidentified package located outside the Centrelink Cranbourne Service Centre on Tuesday. This was a distressing event for the community and I would like to reassure your readers that the department has stringent protocols in place to manage such incidents. Our staff handled the incident with the utmost professionalism and seriousness. Our security guard immediately reported the item to the Service Centre Manager who in turn notified the police - who were on site shortly after the items discovery. All staff and customers were evacuated to a safe location while Victoria Police investigated the package. The safety of our staff and customers is of paramount importance. Our staff and security guards are given intensive training to deal with threats of this nature. IN RESPONSE to the Mayor, Cr Sam Aziz (Barking Up The Wrong Tree, News 7 April) to my letter (Complaint Registered, 31 March) regarding cat registration - what a load of “pollie waffle”. The Mayor has missed the point entirely 25 per cent is 25 per cent, not an average of 13 per cent. Whether it be 13 per cent or 25 per cent, it is still well above inflation of about 2.5 per cent - why? The services council provides is a load of clap trap. The fee may have been decided at an open council meeting on 15 December 2015 - that doesn’t make it fair. Sorry if you don’t like the word “stealth”. Why is the State Government getting a cut? What the council is doing is trying to get

around the 2.5 per cent cap on council rates by increasing fees not classified as council rates. It will be interesting see what the new garbage rate will be for 2016-2017. Bunjil is another example of council arrogance. Just to round off this letter, there is no mention of local councils in the Australian Constitution - therefore local councils are illegal! Travel to transparency I RECENTLY received an invitation from my local Cranbourne MP Jude Perera to attend a community forum on public transport at the Balla Balla Community Centre.

While I know that extra bus services were certainly a pre-election promise and I am glad to see some action. Much to my surprise, this forum turned out to be organised by not by Mr Perera but by Public Transport Victoria (PTV). It was one of a number of ways they were consulting with the community about changes to the bus services in the area. Yet the invite asked for an RSVP to Mr Perera, not to the PTV. When asked who paid for the event, the centre refused to divulge the information, citing ‘privacy’ concerns. So, Mr Perera, were you being honest in claiming this as your event? A GHOST car, which suddenly appears on a Cranbourne road, has gone viral. The car was caught on dash cam appearing from nowhere to suddenly collide with another vehicle. The video posted on Friday 8 April on social media by a follower called Warwick had viewers clicking the replay button to try to work out where the car came from. The dash cam reveals the silver Astra suddenly appearing after colliding with a ute which as it turns right at a junction in Cranbourne. Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard that police spotted a stolen car, crawling with a deflated tyre and wheel rim grinding along Willow Drive, Hampton Park, shortly after midnight on 11 April. The silver Bluebird, with sparks and smoke issuing from its front wheel, travelled on despite pursuing police activating their sirens. Police followed the wheel’s gouge marks for two kilometres before catching up with the driver and his 18-year-old passenger.

Police hunt on for card thief POLICE are searching for a man who broke into a car in Berwick and used a stolen credit card to buy food. POLICE have charged 24 people over the wild brawl in Melbourne’s CBD last month. It’s believed members of the ‘Apex’ gang, allegedly named after Apex Street in Dandenong North, were involved in a free-for-all against rival gang Islander 21. The fight that unfolded on Melbourne’s White Night saw about 150 people converge on Federation Square and wreak havoc throughout the city. Twenty-four people have been charged with a number of offences including affray and riotous behaviour, while one of them has been charged with two counts of theft. Those charged range from 14 to 40 years of age, and more arrests are expected in the next few days. Detectives from Taskforce Ares, set up specifically to investigate the city brawl on Sat-

urday 12 March, have so far identified about 40 people who were involved in unlawful activity on the night. Police allege an initial fight broke out between a group of adults and a group of youths at Birrarung Marr about 7.50pm. Then two more fights allegedly took place between two groups of youths at Federation Square about 10.20pm and in the city square about 10.45pm. Police are also investigating 17 robberies and thefts in the CBD that night. Members of the Apex gang have also allegedly been involved in a spate of home invasions and car thefts across Casey in the last nine months or so. PAKENHAM Arthritis Self-Help Group is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year with a reunion for past and present members. To mark the milestone, members of the arthritis community from surrounding regions including Cranbourne, Berwick and Narre Warren have been invited to attend the 18 May celebration. Arthritis Victoria will also deliver a talk on the latest research into the debilitating condition. Treasurer Bruce Horskins said the group’s 130 members came from a wide area- from Dandenong to Bunyip, Emerald and Lang Lang. He became involved with the group about seven years ago when his wife, Lynette, developed arthritis. “The demand for services has grown, but I think it’s a different demand depending on the kind of arthritis and what medication people take,“ Mr Horskins said. “We recommend the best form of therapy is keeping active by doing mild exercise. Our active members do four sessions in the warm water pool each week. “I think there’s only so much the therapy can do in slowing down the symptoms, but my wife’s arthritis, for example, is at the point where it’s getting worse and worse. “She now uses the group as mainly a social outlet and likes that the other members she talks to are going through similar situations.“ Mr Horskins said that, in his experience, arthritis was most common among those in their seventies, but the symptoms could often show from mid to late sixties. The group’s highlights over the years include the introduction of a welfare officer who oversees special milestones and illnesses, warm water exercise classes and chair exercises, which began in the 1990s.

Sessions are still held at the Pakenham Guide Hall. As well as arthritis friendly exercises, the group has a strong social focus, offering regular outings, talks, special meetings and demonstrations.

While Rowan Little’s day job is spent as an apple grower at Montague Orchards on Horswood Road, he was recently filmed for a product segment expected to appear on Channel 7’s My Kitchen Rules. Montague Orchards has been growing apples at the site since the 1950s and the business has been supplying fruit to Coles for more than a decade. Mr Little told Star News his time in front of the camera was a great opportunity for Montague Orchards. “We’re pretty excited,” he said. “Any time you get the opportunity to talk about your product is a good day.” Mr Little is one of eight Coles suppliers to appear in product segments on the toprating TV program. The Shambrooks arrived at the camping ground on a Thursday afternoon and had breakfast with Luke the next day, but later on the Friday morning the young boy took it upon himself to go on an adventure. â€œIn the months since April last year weâ€™ve had an even greater appreciation of what it must have taken for each police member to get up each morning and begin, again, the task of fulfilling the role that they had in the search,â€? Rachel said. â€œEach time you co-ordinated volunteers or gave briefings or updated records or liaised with the other service organisations, there must have been an increasing sense of hopelessness and loss.

â€œBut to your credit you persisted with a sense of purpose and determination to do your utmost and each one of you contributed in ways beyond your responsibility.â€? Despite last yearâ€™s ordeal, Rachel and Tim felt it was important to return to Lake Eildon and this Easter went back there for their annual camping trip. Rachel described this yearâ€™s trip as a type of â€œclosureâ€?. â€œThe first couple of days were stressful and we were very mindful of him,â€? she said. â€œIt was closure with the trauma and emotional status and getting that first year out of the way. â€œIt really was a miracle.â€? Assistant Commissioner Rick Nugent, who spoke at Mondayâ€™s event, applauded his familyâ€™s â€œresilienceâ€? and â€œcourageâ€?. â€œLukeâ€™s story was an amazing story of survival,â€? he said. â€œItâ€™s just over 12 months now since Luke was separated from Rachel and Tim, his parents, at Lake Eildon on a holiday and he commenced one of the biggest searches weâ€™ve had for some time.â€?

JEAN Anderson has been enjoying her family for many decades. A Cranbourne resident of eight years, Jean will mark her century on Sunday 16 April at the Cranbourne RSL. Her daughter Beth Murphy said she would have her three children, nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren by her side to celebrate. “She never thought she’d make it to 100, she still jokes about it- she can’t believe it,” Beth said.

Having lived on a farm in Warracknabeal for the majority of her married life, Jean said the one thing that got her this far was family. “You just have to enjoy your family, those who have looked after you,” Jean said. After a lifetime of playing tennis and piano, sewing and calligraphy, Jean hasn’t lost her creative spark. “She’s always been artistic, I have some of her poems framed and she still does colouring in,” Beth said. After moving from their sheep and wheat farm with her

husband of 64 years, Duncan, a WWII veteran, Jean recalls one exciting day. “Going to Government House for a garden party- we were invited for a presentation of a war medal for Duncan,” she said. Jean has already received recognition from Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnball, and Beth hopes one from the Queen isn’t far away. “My mum is lovely, she’s witty and still has her dry humour and the letter will be a surprise for her on her special day,” Beth said.

THE leaders of the already-existing mosque on Belgrave-Hallam Road have donated $5000 to the Royal Children’s Hospital. Mohammed Janif, a member of the Islamic Education and Welfare Association of Dandenong (IEWAD), said the IEWAD mosque at 131-133 BelgraveHallam Road in Narre Warren North, had been involved in “charity work ever since we opened the doors,” about six years ago. Mr Janif said he and the other members of the mosque wanted to share their goodwill with the public in the wake of recent events. Last month, hundreds of people packed the Narre Warren North Public Hall for a com-

munity meeting to discuss the controversial application for another mosque at 365-367 Belgrave-Hallam Road. It has been lodged by the Saarban Islamic Trust - not IEWAD and Mr Janif stressed his mosque had nothing to do with the current application. Mr Janif said his mosque’s donation to the Royal Children’s Hospital was a way of portraying to people that the members are “part of the community”. “We live here, our children go to the hospital - why not help these people out?” he said. “This is my home.” As well as donating to the hospital, Mr Janif said the IEWAD mosque members had participated in a range of volunteering work at local soup kitchens, for

the WA bushfires, the floods in Fiji, and for asylum seekers and the disadvantaged in the local community. Mr Janif also welcomed people to visit his mosque to meet with its members if they wanted to learn more about how the organisation gives back to the community. In recent weeks, a Facebook page trying to stop the new mosque being built at 365-367 Belgrave-Hallam Road in Narre Warren North has been set up, collecting 9852 likes to date, with a planning application to build the ‘place of worship’ currently before Casey Council. The Saarban Islamic Trust has since set up a rival petition at change.org which has 2118 supporters to date.

The 18th annual Casey Kids Carnival was held on Saturday 9 April at Akoonah Park in Berwick, with many children and their families turning out to take part in the event. What a year for Smith! By RUSSELL BENNETT IT’S so hard to quantify just what makes the greats so great, but one thing they all seem to have in common is an utterly relentless pursuit of perfection - no matter how futile that may be. Pakenham’s Chris Smith rubber stamped his reputation as an absolute great of the West Gippsland Cricket Association by taking out the top individual honour - the Terry Stephenson Medal - at the league’s presentation night in Kooweerup last Friday night. Smith polled 18 votes to win by two from Cardinia’s champion spinner Dwayne Doig, with Kooweerup legend Chris O’Hara a further vote behind. The star Lions all-rounder had a simply brilliant all-around season, scoring a whopping 786 runs at an average of 49.1 - including four centuries. But he was also stellar with the ball, taking 23 wickets at an average of just 11.6 and an economy rate of 2.7. What separates the greats from the rest of the pack is that those great players refuse to rest on their laurels. They can’t - their minds won’t let them. They’re perfectionists.

“(The premiership) makes this so much sweeter,” Smith said about his medal on Friday night. “It caps off a great year and you know you’ve contributed and done your part. “Last season I had a down year by my personal and perceived standards. “I’ve always been my own harshest critic - you can always do better. “If you make a hundred, you can always make 150.” Smith, 25, said Friday’s senior WGCA presentation night let the premiership - and Pakenham’s undefeated 2015/16 Premier campaign - sink in yet again. “You appreciate what a good six months it was with your great mates,” he said. “We had the perfect season. You wish for it, but you never really think it’s going to happen. Now that it’s started to sink in, you look back and realise how phenomenal it was - the good, the bad ... you take it all in.” Smith now admits he thought his side was “done and dusted” in its semi-final over Merinda Park, before winning it in remarkable circumstances. “You start to think that we’ve had

this season and now we’re done, but to fight back and to see the willpower from everyone to keep on pushing until the final ball ... that was massive,” he said. “It’d be hard to say we didn’t think it was all over, but we got through and we had one more week to prove ourselves.” Lions club president Phil Anning knew Smith was something special from the moment he scored a century against Pakenham as a 15-year-old for Pakenham Upper-Toomuc. “I’ve always had a lot of time for him but what I’ve seen in the past three years has made me think that he’s probably one of the best cricketers I’ve ever seen at this level,” he said. “I’ve been involved in cricket in this area for over 45 years, and I’ve seen a lot of great players like Ed Lewis, Dallas Wyatt, Ron Ingram and Alex Duff, and I’d rate Chris right up there with them. Stand-alone meeting for Pakenham Cup Silverbacks run away THE Pakenham Racing Club has capped off a magnificent week with an announcement by Minister for Racing, the Hon. Martin Pakula, that Racing.com Park will host its inaugural stand-alone Saturday meeting on 3 December, 2016. Mr Pakula made the announcement at last Thursday’s night racing launch, where Pakenham became just the third club behind Moonee Valley and Cranbourne to host night racing in Victoria. The announcement means that Victoria’s newest racecourse will become the fourth regional racetrack to host a Saturday standalone meeting, joining Bendigo, Ballarat and Mornington. The stand-alone meeting will be highlighted by the running of the Pakenham Cup (2500m) with a feature-packed undercard worth more than $700,000 in prizemoney, including the running of the $100,000 VOBIS Gold Bullion (1400m) - a leg of the prestigious VOBIS Gold Premier Race Series. “Tonight we celebrate a historic occasion with the launch of a third night racing venue in Victoria, and I am pleased to announce that this premier venue will also become the fourth regional racetrack in Victoria to host a stand-alone meeting,” Racing Victoria Chief Executive Bernard Saundry said. THE Pakenham Silverbacks’ junior side has continued its playoff push with an impressive 40-20 win over their local rivals, the Berwick Miners, at Sydney Pargeter Reserve in Endeavour Hills on Sunday morning. In what was a particularly strong all-around effort, Pakenham’s offense came out hard right from the outset but a series of defensive slip-ups kept the Miners in the game in the first half. Still, Pakenham led 20-12 at the main break on the back of some strong runs from Akapei Pua and Austin Tala, which kept the boys driving down-field, while the Mulipola brothers - Peter and Faa - ran through tackles all day. The defense clicked into gear in the second half. IT doesn’t matter what Aaron Creasey does for the remainder of his career at Pakenham - he will always be remembered for one hell of a brave act in his first game for the club. Creasey had a decision to make as a skied ball floated deep in to enemy territory, just two minutes in to the second quarter of Saturday night’s game against Tooradin. Should he run back with the flight of the ball and risk injury, or should he sit back with no intensity just like his team had done for the first 30 minutes of play? Creasey didn’t flinch, his lights knocked out with the resultant spillage falling to Chris Langley who kicked a long bomb to give the Seagulls a 34-point lead, 7.1(43) to 1.3(9). Creasey’s action had initially proved costly - but was the pivotal point in Pakenham’s come-from-behind 15-point victory over a vastly-improved Tooradin outfit. “Aaron’s been so good since he came to the club, and to go back with the flight like that was just unbelievable,” Pakenham coach Steve O’Bryan said. “He’s a Pakky boy through and through already now.” Creasey’s heroics saw the Lions come alive, kicking seven unanswered goals to take a tenuous grip on the contest. A decade or so ago the South Korean automobile manufacturer churned out cheap and cheerful cars in which refinement was not a strong suit. Now, with the sixth generation of the Hyundai Elantra not only has refinement reached new heights, quality has followed while still maintaining its affordable status. And design no longer takes a back seat with Hyundai’s sleek design philosophy there for all to see. The latest Elantra is not lacking in specification, with two levels – Active and Elite (Premium has been dropped) – offering buyers choices not often found at this price point. At $21,490, the Active is marginally more expensive than the car it replaces but includes more than $2000 worth of added value, while the Elite carries $2000 to $2500 extra value. We were presented with the midrange Active automatic, at $23,790, plus on-road costs, to evaluate. It provided a clear insight into the Hyundai company philosophy. Striking new looks set the tone of the new Elantra, a key feature being a more assertive front end than before thanks to Hyundai’s ‘family signature’ hexagonal radiator grille, slimline headlamps and LED daytime running lights. per cent and eight per cent, respectively, on the outgoing Elantra. Lowend torque has been improved significantly, though its peak at 4000 rpm is very high. The electronically controlled sixspeed automatic transmission, available in both Active and Elite, features a lock-up torque converter and sequential manual shift mode. Six airbags (driver and front passenger, driver and front passenger side (thorax), and full length curtains) take care of passive safety and are standard across the Elantra range. Active safety in all variants is in the hands of Electronic Stability Control, including Traction Control, Anti-lock brakes, Electronic Brake force Distribution, Brake Assist and Vehicle Stability Management. Hill Start Assist helps in setting off on an incline. LED daytime running lights are augmented by automatic dusk-sensing headlamps, while rear-view camera and rear parking assist come to the aid when reversing. There may be what seem only minor increases in cabin dimensions of the new Elantra, but there is a feeling of a lot more space for occupants. Most appealing.
