‘Gross breach of trust’

By JESSE GRAHAM HEALESVILLE’S former Chamber of Commerce president faces time in jail after fronting Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 6 April, to answer nearly 50 fraud charges.

Graham Taylor, 60, appeared in court to answer 48 charges of fraud and deception, all of which occurred between February 2014 and March 2015.

The charges included stealing money from people’s credit cards; stealing money and wine from Coldstream’s Rochford Wines, where he worked; using credit cards falsely to purchase concert tickets; and stealing $1110 from the Healesville Chamber of Commerce, where he was president until his arrest in 2015.

The prosecutor, Sergeant van Geyzel, said Taylor stole more than $12,000 by using credit cards that did not belong to him, after receiving the numbers from friends who asked him to purchase items for them from Rochford.

He used the cards 33 times for cash advances, and on one occasion stole wine from the business for a victim, to keep up the guise of having used their card legitimately.

When the thefts came to light in April 2015, Taylor was arrested and charged with 45 offences - three more charges were added later.

Taylor also stole $2860 from the Marysville Lions Club, where he was president from 2013-’15, which was given to him to pay for a contractor. He kept and spent the money.

Sgt van Geyzel noted in court an agreement had been made to repay the Lions club, and the 48 charges did not include that theft.

He noted that one victim had been repaid, though more than $19,000 was left owed to victims, from the total stolen of $21,189.

Representing himself in court, Taylor pleaded guilty to all charges.

Sgt van Geyzel said Taylor told police he was motivated by “desperation“, using stolen money to pay for food and bills, and to repay people who questioned the extra charges on their credit cards.

In the courtroom, Taylor said he began stealing after “taking on way too much

at work“, and bought concert tickets and entertainment packages for friends who asked for them using one of the cards.

“I ran myself into the ground,“ he said.

“I was very popular - people would come and ask me for tickets, and I had no way of saying no to anyone.“ He said he was currently receiving treatment for depression.

But Ms Crowe disputed Mr Taylor’s explanation that he had stolen money to repay others, and said his crimes were a “gross breach of trust“.

“The cash advances, they went in your pocket - you didn’t give those away,“ she said.

“This is a gross breach of trust, not only of your friends, but of your employers.

“You stole from not only your employer, but two community organisations ... only one is really before me, (but) that’s got nothing to do with assisting any friends.“ Taylor provided character references to the court, but Ms Crowe said they were “insufficient“, and did not demonstrate that the writers knew the charges he was facing.

She asked him to bring more details of any medical conditions, as well as testimony and witnesses, to court, to back up his claims of mental illness and that he had been asked for free tickets.

Ms Crowe said her two options for sentencing Taylor included a jail sentence, or a community corrections order, and noted the latter would require community work.

Taylor was previously convicted of fraud and deception charges in 2006, after keeping cash payments and using customers’ credit cards to steal $17,800 when he was the property manager at a conference centre.

He was convicted and sentenced to six months in jail for the 2006 charges, which was appealed and suspended; he was given a community corrections order.

Originally slated to appear in court in October 2015, after his arrest, Taylor’s case was adjourned multiple times before Wednesday’s hearing.

He will re-appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 4 May for sentencing.

THE GREENS launched their campaign for the Casey electorate last week, with Federal Leader Senator Richard Di Natale joining supporters for dinner at Healesville’s Grand Hotel.

About 70 Greens supporters, Federal Election candidates, Victorian MPs and community members filled the dining room of the hotel on Wednesday night for an evening with Senator Di Natale.

After dinner, Senator Di Natale addressed the crowd, speaking about his trip around the Yarra Valley and into Toolangi earlier in the day.

The trip included visits to Warburton’s Rainforest Gallery, to Healesville Sanctuary, to the Toolangi State Forest and to Toolangi’s Strathvea Guest House, where $3 million in grants were announced for establishing tourism attractions and businesses in the Central Highlands.

He spoke about his own background, as an Italian immigrant, and condemned the Coalition’s $150 million plebiscite on marriage equality, among other issues, saying a conscience vote would finish the issue. “If Malcolm Turnbull said to his party room, ‘I’m going to allow a conscience vote’ ... that issue would be done in two weeks,� Senator Di Natale said. “We can get that done through the Parliament; we’d have a rare moment of unity in a Parliament that’s otherwise so divided. “But, no, this is a Prime Minister who fought so hard to take the job from the old guy, and he’s gone with the old guy’s approach.�

Senator Di Natale then introduced Dr Sutherland as the Greens candidate for Casey, who said her decision to stand came after years of “complaining� and joining the party in 2014.

She said a “lack of good leadership, and partisanship, lack of action on climate change�, as well as a “lack of support for renewables� and “concern about misogyny in ... our communities�, prompted her to run for pre-selection. “I decided, right then, if things were ever going to get better in our country, it would be a strong Greens party playing a role in government that will do it,� Dr Sutherland said. “It was time to really start putting our money where our mouth was.�

Speaking to the Mail after the event, Senator Di Natale and Dr Sutherland said they were ready to campaign for the election, whether a mid-year double dissolution was called or not.

“I suspect we will have a double dissolution election in July, and we’re absolutely ready,� he said.

Dr Sutherland, a Monbulk resident, said the biggest issues for the area were about “making Casey liveable� – fast internet, bulk-billing healthcare and even sealed roads. “We’ve chosen to live in a beautiful part of the world - a lot of us have chosen to live here to be better connected to nature and better connected to country, but, at the same time, that goes hand-inhand with core services,� she said. “It feels like regional Australia here, sometimes. “And regional Australia has got a good case for getting a lot better services across the board, but we do, too, and we’re only 50 minutes from Melbourne.�

She joins Labor candidate Hovig Melkonian in the campaign for the seat of Casey, which has been held by the Liberal Party’s Tony Smith since 2001.

Fire danger period draws to a close THE Fire Danger Period for the Yarra Ranges Shire (those areas not included in the Metropolitan Fire District) finished at 1am on Monday 11 April.

CFA District 13 Operations manager Dave Renkin said although the period had come to an end, the threat of fires still remained. “Grass-fires travel faster than you can run; they can threaten properties within minutes,� he said.

Mr Renkin said residents who wanted to conduct private burn-offs on their properties needed to follow some basic rules, and be aware of weather conditions and local council law. “Every year out brigades get more and more frustrated at the number of false alarm calls they have to respond to as a result of people not doing the right thing,� he said.

Burning off undergrowth and other vegetation is generally permitted outside of the Fire Danger Period.

However, landowners should register their burnoff with the Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority (EST) by calling 1800 668 511 or emailing burnoffs@esta. vic.gov.au.

Drugs, ammo raid

By JESSE GRAHAM TWO Healesville residents will face court after police raided four properties on Friday morning, with drugs and ammunition found during the search.

On Friday 8 April, police from the Croydon Divisional Tasking Unit (DTU), Knox Crime Investigation Unit (CIU), Yarra Ranges CIU, Yarra Glen and Healesville executed four search warrants at properties on Don Road and Maroondah Highway in Healesville.

Yarra Glen Police Sergeant Richard Coulson said that cartridge ammunition was found at one property, with methamphetamine (ice) and cannabis found at another property.

Police used three drug sniffer

dogs during the search, with as many as 15 undercover and marked police cars parked at the Don Road properties through the morning.

A witness to the Maroondah Highway raid said police officers, armed with a battering ram, arrived shortly after 9am, followed by the dog squad.

The property owner then arrived with police, to allow them access to the business and a residential property.

As a result of the raids, a 39-yearold Healesville man will be charged on summons for drug offences and breaching bail. A 49-year-old Healesville woman is expected to be charged on summons for possessing ammunition.

Greens pledge tourism boost

By KATH GANNAWAY GREENS leader Senator Richard Di Natale has reiterated the party’s commitment to the establishment of a Great Forest National Park in Central Highlands, and pledged $3 million to boost tourism.

Senator Di Natale made the announcements during a pre-election tour of the Yarra Valley on Wednesday 6 March, which included the Rainforest Walk in Warburton, Healesville Sanctuary and Strathvea Guest House in Toolangi.

He was accompanied by Greens Victorian leader, Senator Janet Rice, Casey candidate Dr Elissa Sutherland and Victorian Greens member for Eastern Metropolitan, Samantha Dunn.

Standing among the tree tops at the Rainforest Walk, the group heard from Australian National University Senior Forest Ecology Research officer David Blair on the proposal and need for the establishment of the park.

“We have been able to do some pretty amazing research by looking at the forest in these closed (water) catchments and what is happening in the state forest, and it’s chalk and cheese,” he said.

He said the protections put in place aimed at protecting habitat trees in logging coupes, and other measures to provide alternative habitat for Leadbeater’s Possum, were inadequate.

“We are fiddling around with nest boxes and cutting holes in trees with chain saws and still burning around these big old trees,” he said.

Senator Di Natale said both the state and federal were committed to establishing the GFNP.

A RARE car worth more than $200,000 was stolen from a Yarra Glen tourist attraction on Saturday, and police are calling for witnesses to come forward.

Sometime between 1.45pm and 2.15pm on Saturday 9 April, a rare 1970 Ford Falcon GTHO was stolen from the car park of the Yarra Glen Chocolaterie.

Yarra Glen Police Sergeant Richard Coulson said the “extremely rare” car was worth more than $200,000, and that the thieves likely followed the owner to the Chocolaterie to take the car.

The car is orange/red in colour and bears club registration plates of 43143H. Police are still investigating the theft.

Anyone who may have seen any suspicious behaviour around the time of the theft, or who has spotted the car since, is asked to call Yarra Glen police on 9730 1296 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

“It’s hard not to get angry because what we are doing is so short sighted,” he said in response to Mr Blair’s talk.

“We have to get to the heart of what the problem is here, and it’s the propping up of an industry that is no longer profitable, very highly subsidised and has a massive environmental impact.

He said there were strong economic reasons around tourism and jobs that underpinned the creation of the GFNP. Announcing the $3 million pledge for tourism investment, he said the Green’s vision was to invest in tourism attractions and services that showcased the natural environment.

He said the transition to a new

economy required a greater investment in tourism assets close to Melbourne.

“As Melbourne’s population grows, we need to capitalise on the huge economic opportunities that come with the tourism boom and ensure there are places for people to connect with nature and unplug from our increasingly 24/7 lives,” Senator Di Natale said.

He said federal grants for innovative local tourism businesses and community-led tourism attractions, as well as establishing the Great Forest National Park, would keep forests intact for future generations and create new, sustainable jobs.

Strathvea owner Deanne Eccles said $3 million would invigorate small business.

“This says that finally we’re seeing a willingness to invest in the capital growth of this area,” she said.

“It’s about recognising the future of tourism and potential for growth in the area and also recognising that the Yarra Valley is an hour outside of Melbourne where you are basically going from the city into nature.”

Senator Rice, Greens spokesperson for tourism and forests said the Great Forest National Park was the way forward.

“Whether you’re a mountain biker, a foodie, a wildlife spotter or a camper, the Great Forest National Park and a vibrant local tourism sector will allow people from all walks of life to reconnect with our beautiful natural landscapes,” Senator Rice said.

POLICE are appealing for witnesses to come forward and are scouring CCTV footage, after a Healesville business was robbed last week.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Melanie Woods said that at 3am on Tuesday 5 April, Healesville’s Alchemy was broken into.

Det Sgt Woods said the thieves smashed their way through the front glass door, making off with cash and jewellery items worth $1200 in total.

She said police were making inquiries with local businesses about CCTV footage, and asked anyone with information about the burglary to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to file a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Charges laid in marketplace burglary A MOOROOLBARK man will front court at the end of the month for burglaries at the Lilydale Marketplace shopping centre, after being remanded in custody last week.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Melanie Woods said the 40-year-old man was arrested at 11.30am on Friday 1 April and charged in relation to two burglaries between 19 and 20 March at the shopping centre.

He appeared at the Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 1 April and 8 April, and was further remanded in custody to appear on Friday 29 April.

Det Sgt Woods said a 14-year-old Mooroolbark girl was interviewed and released, pending summons, in relation to the burglaries.

The effects of synthetic marijuana on human health are significant.

It is known to cause irregular heartbeat, psychosis, violence, seizures, stroke, kidney shut down and death.

It is important that Victorians understand there is no safe form of synthetic marijuana.

The former Napthine Government banned 54 forms of the synthetic marijuana based on police toxicology results to try and keep pace with new products on the market.

However, the Andrews Government has not included any new substance bans for well over a year.

That said, the Victorian Parliament’s bipartisan Law Reform, Road and Community Safety Committee is now reviewing laws and procedures relating to synthetic drugs with reference to the effectiveness of testing, treat-

ment programs and supply reduction strategies.

As part of this work, the committee will compare Victoria’s practices against those of neighbouring jurisdictions to bring us in line with more modern approaches.

In January 2016, the United Kingdom Parliament passed the Psychoactive Substances Bill which enshrines in British law a ban on all psychoactive substances.

Their ground-breaking legislation makes it an offence to produce, supply, offer, possess, import or export all psychoactive substances intended for human consumption.

This will outlaw all forms of “legal” highs once and for all.

ON FOUR separate occasions, I have spoken in parliament about the need for reforms to the Drugs, Poisons and Controlled Substances Act 1981 to make all possible forms of synthetic marijuana illegal.

This was in direct response to concerns raised with me by several residents who have family members now battling health issues and addiction to what they initially assumed was a harmless substance.

This assumption is based on the misguided belief that if something isn’t illegal (because it can be readily bought from local places including sex shops) the smoking of these chemicals can’t be harmful to your health.

However, the reality is that synthetic marijuana has simply escaped the

Police response is vital

By KATH GANNAWAY POLICE play a vital role in the frontline response to family violence.

The Royal Commission into Family Violence released on 30 March identified an effective police response as “essential to victims’ ability to remain safe, receive a fair outcome, and recover from the violence”.

It’s a big call in a region like Yarra Ranges where, anecdotally, family violence takes up a huge slab of police time - and resources at station level are stretched.

The commission's report acknowledges that significant changes have taken place in Victoria Police in the last 15 years, the police show “great leadership and commitment to improving the way it responds to family violence” and applauds the Code of Practice that now exists.

It also calls on Victoria Police to make improvements to ensure that family violence is regarded as ‘core business’ and delivers recommendations around leadership, training, culture and attitudes, intervention orders and other aspects of police response that cover police cadets right through the ranks to the Chief Commissioner.

Inspector Peter Wheeler is in charge of Eastern Region Division 2 that takes in Yarra Ranges, Maroondah and Knox regions.

He says quantifying the amount of time police spend on family violence is difficult.

Along with mental health, drugs, alcohol and road trauma related incidents, he says, however, it is significant.

“I am confident in saying that if you look closely, certainly not in all cases, but more often than not, there is cross-pollination within family

violent incidents with issues such as drugs and alcohol or mental health that all contribute to family violence.”

Eastern Region 2 has established a Family Violence Unit and there are Family Liaison Officers in police stations.

Inspector Wheeler said he was aware in the report of the difficulties associated with time between a police response to a family violence call and getting before the courts in a timely way.

This is being addressed, he said through the introduction of a more streamlined process to get the matter before the court, or to relevant support services.

“The referral process is aimed at getting both the perpetrator and aggrieved family member before people with the skills and knowledge to drill down to the causational factors of the conflict and provide the individual with coping mechanisms to mitigate ongoing behaviour,” he said.

He said repeat attendances to the same addresses take up a lot of police time, and with multiple attendances comes an increased risk.

New approaches are more effective in minimising re-attendance and therefore more effective in minimising risk of repeat offenders and repeat victims, Inspector Wheeler said.

EDVOS (Eastern Domestic Violence Service) CEO Jenny Jackson says there has been a significant preparedness of people to come forward, expose family violence and have the offending person held accountable.

This has no doubt contributed to an increased load on police which Ms Jackson says police they work with put at between 40 to 60 per cent of their workload.

She says EDVOS would like to see more programs like the Repeat Police Attendance and High Rise Responses that operate in the eastern region.

“These are for families where police are called a number of times, or where women and children are considered to be at risk,” she explained.

“Police go out once a week with our worker and visit those homes and talk to the women and children about their safety.

“Programs like that will be much more desirable in the future,” she said.

Ms Jackson said increasing the amount of work police and services do together will make a big difference.

“What it does is clearly demonstrate to women and children that they are not to blame and allows police to follow up with the perpetrator or respondent,” she said.

“We know that the presence of alcohol and drug use can exacerbate family violence even further, but they are not a cause, and the same applies to mental health.

“Issues around power and control are what cause family violence.”

On police attitudes to family violence, Ms Jackson said there has been a significant change over time and that Royal Commission recommendations for police at entry level had the potential to make a difference.

Iconic trees posing danger

By JESSE GRAHAM A HEALESVILLE mother has called on the council to assess dangerous trees along River Street, which have repeatedly dropped large limbs in and around her property and on footpaths.

Brookley Scopel is asking the Yarra Ranges Council to find a solution to large trees on River Street and Glenfern Road in Healesville, which have dropped numerous large limbs on nearby properties.

The Mail reported incidents in 2014 and 2015 where an extremely large limb crushed Ms Scopel’s neighbour’s fence and obscured access to their driveway, and another dropped near her children’s play area in their backyard.

On Friday 4 March, another large limb dropped from one of the trees, smashing Ms Scopel’s fence and falling over the River Street footpath, about 3.30pm.

Ms Scopel said her child was walking home from school at the time, and heard the crack of the limb breaking off from inside her house. By the time she ran outside, the limb had fallen – though no-one was nearby at the time.

Speaking with the Mail later, she said one of the trees had a large dead limb hanging, and feared it would fall in windy weather.

Ms Scopel said the council’s arborist said they would visit her property to inspect the trees and cut away dead wood, but said the limbs that dropped had green leaves. “He’s told me they can’t prune them, because

of the risk of rot, but there has to be a question of safety here,� she said. “They (the trees) look healthy enough – they’re huge, they’ve got plenty of water supply, but there’s a lot of weight up there.�

She said that the trees had been dropping large limbs for five of the 10 years she had lived on the street.

Over the years, Ms Scopel has said she did not want the iconic trees removed, but that a solution needed to be found, before someone was hit by a falling limb. “I know this is an iconic street, (but) I’m fearful of somebody being severely injured by these limbs,� she said. “If worse came to worse, and they had to be removed for the safety of everybody, there’s no reason why the street can’t remain an iconic street. Replace them with manageable, safe, beautiful trees.�

Yarra Ranges Council’s director of Environment and Engineering, Mark Varmalis, said a recent meeting with Ms Scopel “went well�, and that an arborist was expected to visit the site this week – though the trees had been inspected “several times previously“. “Their health is good, but they are mature trees and have dropped branches, which is common,“ he said.

He said the council’s tree team remove trees “if they pose an unacceptable risk, regardless of their heritage, cultural or environmental value“, and that dead wood and damaged branches would be removed from the River Street trees, with the arborist inspecting the canopy from an evelated work platform.

Driver injured after hot-rod hits bridge

By JESSE GRAHAM A HOT-ROD owner has been hospitalised and his car destroyed after crashing into a bridge coming into Healesville over the weekend.

At 10.20am on Sunday 10 April, emergency services were called out to a single-car crash on the Maroondah Highway, at the bridge over the Yarra Flats coming into town.

Healesville CFA Captain Graeme Bates said a 62-year-old driver had crashed the hot rod into the railing of the bridge, after seemingly making a turn on the straight stretch of road.

“The cause of it, we don’t know,“ Capt Bates said.

“He’s just driving along, and the people following him said he just veered to the right as he went onto the bridge.

“In the middle of the bridge, he’s done a complete right-hand turn into the railings.“ He said the car caught fire after the crash, but the drivers following

him helped to extinguish the fire and get the man out of the wrecked car.

The man was taken to The Alfred hospital via MICA (Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance), with several broken bones, including broken ankles, and lacerations.

The hot rod was a “total write off“, according to Capt Bates, with the front-end of the car cut away, so the remains could be removed from the bridge.

Later in the day, emergency services were called out again, to a three-car pile-up on Don Road in Healesville, where a Holden Calais waiting to turn right, and a Mitsubishi Lancer behind it, were hit by a Toyota Landcruiser driving behind them.

Capt Bates said the second crash occurred at 1.30pm on the same day, and that the Lancer was destroyed in the crash, though no-one was injured. “(They were) just shaken up a bit,“ he said.

Speaking on behalf of Brown Brothers, fourth generation family member, Caroline Brown, said having a presence in the Yarra Valley winery industry is very exciting for the company.

“The proximity to Melbourne is very exciting as well,” Ms Brown said.

“Milawa is about three hours from Melbourne and this is a great opportunity to have a presence in the Yarra Valley.”

Fun all round

By KATH GANNAWAY SCHOOL holiday fun down on the farm is not just for kids if that farm happens to be Gillians Rainbow Bridge (GRB) in Healesville.

The farm was a hive of activity on Wednesday 5 April as girls and boys set about making a garden seat for the children’s garden as part of the GRB holiday program, and a group of Healesville Ladies Probus members enjoyed a stroll around the gardens and lunch.

Mosaics and helping out with the farm animals were all part of the fun.

An al fresco lunch brought everyone together, including some opportunistic four-footed visitors from the adjoining paddocks who, like everyone else couldn’t resist the delicious cup-cakes.

GRB was established in memory of veterinary nurse, Gillian Conrad, who died at 31 in 2012.

The organisation is run by a dedicated team of members, with a mix of community development, animal welfare and

Gillian’s mother, Annette Conrad, said the aim of the organisation was to continue her daughter’s legacy of caring for people and animals.

Regular programs provide a place where children who are facing difficulties in their lives can have a safe place to learn and grow.

“These programs are about children and animals coming together, helping each other to heal, and to support each

other in the process of positive change,” Annette said.

Probus member Margaret Allard said the garden was a favourite with the group, but it was the whole concept that made it so special.

“It’s about its reason for being,” she said.

Frances Kelly said it was a wonderful place for the children.

“It’s a very calming place,” she added.

March brought welcome rain SOME rainy days have brought the smile back on the faces of the Mail’s rainfall collectors.

In Warburton, Keith Thomas recorded an ‘excellent’ 106.5mm, against a March average of 87.5mm.

“The 234.5mm recorded for the first three months of 2016 is barely short of our average of

235.7mm,” Mr Thomas said.

Doug Armstrong in Hoddles Creek recorded 78mm compared with 60mm last year. His three-month tally was 214mm, up just 17mm on last year. The long-term average rainfall for Yellingbo for March is 76mm.

“Going into the wetter months, Melbourne’s storage dams are not in a bad state, holding 1,291,500 which is 62.2 per cent of capacity,” Mr Thomas said.

The Yarra Junction Football Netball Club is staging the inaugural festival with a great lineup of live music, showcasing local talent, from noon through to the final performance, finishing at 9.30pm.

“A little something for all ages”, and ticket prices geared towards making the festival accessible to all, is a hallmark of the event.

Free kids activities include a jumping castle, petting zoo and face painting.

There will be plenty of food stalls, raffles, arts and crafts market stalls and the bar will be open for drinks and refreshments.

Winter season safety tips

By KATH GANNAWAY WITH winter conditions already making their presence felt, the TAC has some great advice for drivers of all ages on what to think about when you get out there on the roads - starting with learner drivers.

Practice is the key to driving safely on the road when you are a learner driver. The more practice you have driving in all conditions, the less risk you have of an accident on your P plates.

With the required 120 hours of driving on your L plates when aged under 21 years, it is important you drive in a range of conditions. This ensures you get experience dealing with the range of situations you experience when you drive in heavy traffic, on open country roads, in bad weather or at night time.

Weather conditions: Driving in the rain, fog, snow and bright sunlight calls for extra care as these conditions can reduce visibility or increase the risk of skidding and losing control.

Tips for all weather conditions Reduce speed - Reduce speed in bad weather as your recovery time is better if something goes wrong.

Fog - If you see fog and mist ahead reduce speed before you enter it. In very thick fog, make sure you always know where you are on the road and never drive at a speed that forces you to guess what is ahead. Avoid overtaking.

Rain - Heavy rain can have the same effect as fog with less visibility making it harder to judge where you are on the road in relation to other vehicles.

Ice - Drive slowly on ice and snow to retain traction. Braking should be gentle and not left to the last second, and use an even pressure on the accelerator to lessen the chances of wheel spin and loss of control.

Sun glare - Beware of blinding glare from sunlight either directly from the sun or reflected from other cars and objects. You may need to reduce speed as well as use aids such as the sun visor and sunglasses.

Hazard lights - Turn these on in hazardous weather conditions where visibility is reduced.

Country driving: Driving on the open road can be daunting for some learner drivers, with higher speed limits outside towns, faster vehicles on the road, long distances

More than 20 per cent of fatal crashes are because of fatigue. Long trips and higher speeds on rural roads mean drivers must devote full concentration to the road which can be tiring.

Tips for country driving: Safe distances - Keep a safe distance from the car in front and leave at least a two second gap - three seconds is best. If driving conditions are affected by rain or reduced visibility increase the gap to at least four seconds.

Overtaking - Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t overtake unless it is safe. When moving back to the left, leave enough room to get well past any other vehicle.

Fatigue - To prevent drowsiness: Plan in advance and take regular breaks every two hours Start your drive in the morning after a good nightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sleep Avoid driving late at night and very early in the morning Be aware of native animals such as kangaroos at dawn and dusk Use Driver Reviver stops if they are available or stop and have a coffee break in a town or at a rest area.

Take a power nap - a 15-minute

powernap may be all you need to recharge Night driving: Crash risk increases at night. Visibility can be difficult as other vehicles and road users are harder to detect and other vehicle lights can make distance difficult to judge. At night, more road users may have been drinking, making their behaviour more unpredictable and hazardous.

Tips for night driving: Headlights - Headlights and tail lights must be on between sunset and sunrise. You must have your headlights on low-beam when another vehicle is within 200 metres. This includes dipping the headlights when driving 200 metres or less behind another vehicle.

Cars driving towards you - When a car with high-beam headlights is driving towards you look towards the left hand side of the road and drive towards the left of your lane. You may need to slow down and pull over to let your eyes recover if the lights dazzle you.

Breakdowns - If your vehicle breaks down on the road, make sure other drivers can see your car and stop in time. Turn on the hazard warning lights if you have them. If possible, pull off the road but avoid stopping just over a hill or just around a curve.

Reflectors - Reflectors or guide posts in country areas help you to see the road ahead. Red reflectors are always on the left side of the road and white reflectors on the right hand side.

City driving When you drive in the city you are faced with lots of vehicles, unpredictable drivers, trucks, train crossings, cyclists, motorbikes, pedestrians, breakdowns and more.

The only way to drive safely within complex traffic is to get plenty of city driving practice. Driving in these conditions involves being controlled and alert so you are aware of activity around you.

Tips for city driving: Other road users - Anticipate the behaviour of others on the road - look ahead, look behind and be prepared for the unexpected.

Intersections - Keep a good look out when driving through intersections - they are a high crash risk area.

Mirrors - Use all your car mirrors but look out for blind spots - always look quickly over your shoulder before changing lanes or pulling out from the kerb.

Indicators - Always indicate when turning or changing lanes.

Erratic drivers - Drive with caution if you see an erratic driver near you.

Your attitude - Make allowances for others when they make mistakes. Not getting annoyed and co-operating with other road users means safer and more enjoyable driving.

Deer control Dandenong Ranges National Park, Yellingbo and Warramate Nature Conservation Reserves Parks Victoria’s conservation management to restore and protect park habitat includes the control of introduced plant and animal species. As part of an ongoing strategy, notice is hereby given that Parks Victoria will be conducting a controlled, safe and humane deer control operation targeting Fallow and Sambar Deer in three areas of public land within the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Ranges.

The program, now in its third year, starts in mid-April and aims to remove deer from critical areas and reduce the numbers of deer in Dandenong Ranges National Park and Yellingbo and Warramate Hills Nature Conservation Reserves.

Spotlight shooting at night and stalking in the morning and late afternoon will be the main control techniques.

Parks Victoria will be conducting the program in partnership with accredited and authorised volunteer members of the Australian Deer Association and the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia.

The affected areas within the parks and reserves will be closed during periods of control. Signs will be displayed at all official entrance points to the park and reserves when shooting is in progress.

On track for a great day

By KATH GANNAWAY HEALESVILLE Amateur Racing Club signed off its 2015/16 season in style on Saturday with the club’s inaugural Fashions on the Field.

Forecast showers held off and the club was rewarded with good numbers through the gates and strong entries on the track and in the Fashions on the Field.

The six race program included three memorial races starting with the Juel Gardiner Memorial Trophy.

Mrs Gardiner was a committee member and long-time supporter of the club up until her death last year.

Race 2 was dedicated to former club secretary, Wayne Thomas, who died in February this year. His legacy, drawing on his experience as a surveyor, included construction of the new back straight in 2015.

Race 6 was dedicated to committee member, Lockie Campbell, who died in 2007.

An on-track highlight of the meeting was the win on Landy in the Wayne Thomas Memorial Open by veteran jockey and trainer, Geoff Brunsdon.

Brunsdon had celebrated his 65th birthday the previous day and blitzed the younger competition leading the pack past the cheering crowd in the first sweep of the 2600 metre race and maintaining the momentum as he stormed home for a win.

Accepting the trophy from Mr Thomas’s wife, Hettie, Mr Brunsdon paid tribute to the ‘excellent’ condition of the track.

“I’ve had a few rides here and the back straight was very low and used to flood,” he observed.

“The way they’ve built it up now - it’s terrific,” he said.

Fashions on the Field made a spectacular debut with Mount Evelyn sisters, Brooke and Nicole Walter taking the reins to run the event for the club.

Girls and boys in the 3-7 and 8-15 age categories had fun on the ‘catwalk’ with some serious fashion statements stepping up in the Couple of the Day, Lady of the Day and Best Pink Outfit categories.

The winning couple was Leanne Sanderson and John Burnett from Sunbury. Liisa Cluning from Kilsyth South was the judges’ choice for Lady of the Day and Alissa Heffernan from Healesville took line honours for her stylish pink outfit.

Ms Cluning said it was great fun being part of the first Fashions event at Healesville.

“As you can see, guys and girls love getting dressed up, it encourages the crowd to get involved and it adds another element to country racing.”

HARC committee member Ben Gilbert said the response had exceeded expectations.

“Picnic races are about relaxed racing but it’s great to be able to add a bit of class and sophistication to the day along with that relaxed atmosphere,” he said.

No date has been set for next year, but the Spring Carnival would have to be odds-on favourite.

Plaque unveiled for icon

By JESSE GRAHAM COLDSTREAM residents braved a cold and drizzly Saturday morning to commemorate the life of town icon, Val Sheehan, with a memorial plaque unveiled in Margaret Lewis Reserve.

On Saturday 2 April, about 60 people gathered in the reserve for the unveiling of a memorial plaque for Val Sheehan, who died on 27 March 2015, after more than 70 years in the town.

The plaque, organised by the Friends of Margaret Lewis Reserve, reads, “In loving memory of Val Sheehan, for her generous contribution to this reserve and the local community”.

“Her legacy lives on in many ways, especially in her recording of the rich history of the Yarra Valley,” it read.

Morris Maxwell opened the event, which was attended by Casey MP Tony Smith, and Ryrie Ward councillor, Fiona McAllister, and paid tribute to her work over the years, to improve the reserve, record local history and even in helping to establish the reserve itself.

“We all know that Val didn’t want any fuss made, and she never wanted me to call her our local historian, but

she did that so well she needs recognition,” Mr Maxwell said.

Mr Maxwell, Cr McAllister, Val’s brother, Les Skate, and Lilydale and District Historical Society’s John Brown all paid tribute to Ms Sheehan’s passion for her community in her time, after arriving in town in 1943.

Cr McAllister said that the plaque, set in stone by a walking path, had been organised over the past year, and said it was a “really important and beautiful memorial” for Ms Sheehan.

“Today, for me, is a very beautiful moment to say thank you to Val, and to say thank you to her family, and also to know that every time someone walks past this, if they didn’t know Val, they’ll certainly be wondering who this wonderful woman was,” she said.

“If they did know Val, they’ll stop for a moment and pause, and like most of us here, remember a moment they’ve spent with Val and know what a wonderful experience that was.”

Mr Skate told the audience about growing up with Ms Sheehan, and how the land around the reserve had changed over the years - he noted that

She helped to plant trees around the reserve, and she and Mr Skate worked to establish the Coldstream and Yering War Memorial in 1995.

“You can see why she wanted to put so much into it (Margaret Lewis Reserve), to make sure it was a success - and it certainly has turned out to be a great success, and she would be very proud of it,” he said.

“I’m pretty proud of Val, too, and so is the family.”

Good sports aim to close the gap EASTERN Health’s Closing the Gap Sports Day saw staff face off against Indigenous athletes from around the valley in a football and netball match late last month.

Held on Sunday 28 February, at Healesville’s Don Road Sporting Complex, the Eastern Health staff came out on top in the football match, but lost to community members in the netball game.

The teams came together for the day in the spirit of reconciliation ahead of national Closing the Gap Day on Thursday 17 March, and to raise awareness of health resources for Indigenous residents in the area.

Eastern Health’s Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officer Jo Voce said it was “terrific” to see families supporting the event, which included a Welcome to Country, a petting zoo and jumping castle, art displays,

Aboriginal dance group Aldara Consultancy performed at the Closing the Gap Sports Day. music and information displays.

“While there was plenty of action on the football field and netball court, today is very much about

raising awareness about Aboriginal health in the region,” she said.

“Events such as these, as well as what we do at our hospitals and

community health sites throughout the year, reinforce how much of a key priority closing the gap is for Eastern Health.”

Good trade in bowls challenge with winners all round

By KATH GANNAWAY BOWLING and local business are joint winners in Healesville Bowling Club’s 2015/16 Corporate Bowling Competition.

The six-week competition that draws over 25 local businesses to the greens each Wednesday evening was officially won by Healesville Hydraulics in a close play off with Yarra Valley Mechanical.

As the club plans for its 125th anniversary celebrations later this year, Corporate Challenge organiser Charles Hort said the event was one of the club’s success stories.

“We’re all winners here,” he said.

He said the event which is run twice a year now has a waiting list of businesses that want to take part, with the feedback being very positive about the opportunity the bowls presents for small businesses to get together, have fun and informally network.

The event raises money to keep the greens maintained.

“It’s a lot of work but it’s so gratifying to see all you people here each week.

“It’s fun, but it’s also quite a challenge on the greens, so on behalf of the Hydraulic boys we would like to thank the club and all the other businesses for taking part with us,” captain Mark Balfour said.

“It’s good for the community and local business to participate in this and bring everyone together each week.”

MID-AUTUMN and a beautiful sunny day at the Woods Point Gun Club for the Silver Dollar Trophy shoot.

This trophy is a 1921 American Morgan Silver Dollar enclosed in a special clear stand.

This silver dollar is sent to the club each year with six handcrafted leather belt buckles by Peter Streuber, a sponsor from Ohio in the US. Peter is a top American clay target shooter and co-sponsored

by Rob Kirley of Mansfield.

In the first event, a new system was brought in for the division of the cash prizes that will spread the money a bit further between the grades.

Instead of the usual one or two winners, this time six shooters shared the prize money: AA - Darren Clark and Mick Ward; A - Daniel Chinn; B - Laurie Poile and Geoff Hill and C - Michael Bevis.

The 20 target Goulburn River Continental event sponsored

by Yarra Valley’s Laurie and Jo Poile was next.

Only Daryl Ewert managed the perfect 20/20 to take the Championship Sash and the AA Grade prize outright.

Darren Clarke was AA 2nd, 24/25.

Trevor Ewert won A Grade, 19/20, with the Hoon 2nd, 17/20.

B Grade was a win for Laurie Poile, 17/21, from John Wood, 16/21, and in C Grade Peter Lang, 18/20, was first,

The Silver Dollar Trophy event was shot over 75 targets Double Barrel from the 15m shooting mark.

When it is shot at, the clay target is actually about 30 to 50m away.

After 3 rounds of 25 targets Trevor Newman returned a magnificent 75/75 score to win his first Silver Dollar Trophy and the AA Grade belt buckle.

Phillip Desmond and Mick Ward went into a big shoot off for AA Grade 2nd with Desmond winning 131/134.

Trevor Ewert managed to win the A Grade buckle, 70/75, from Yarra Valley’s Daniel Chinn, 68/75.

Poile in B Grade again beat John Wood to take the buckle

68/75 to 64/75 while two more Yarra Valley shooters fought out C Grade, David Frazer’s 62/76 winning him a buckle from Michael Bevis, 61/76, in second place.

Desmond and Newman shot equal scores of 91/95 in the High Gun to go into a shoot-off that resulted in Desmond taking the sash, 134/139 to Newman, 133/139.

The next shoot is the Community Gold Cup sponsored by the Warburton and Yarra Junction Community Bank Branches on Sunday, 24 April, at 10.30am.

Motoring Best fun on four wheels THE Mountain District Car and Bike Show has continued to draw high-calibre entrants from the Yarra Ranges area and beyond.

Now in its 10th year, the enormously popular event is not only a great inspiration for car lovers, but raises tens of thousands of dollars for local charities.

Around $14,000 was raised from this year’s show, which will go towards purchasing a vital signs monitor for a Lilydale-based oncology unit Other local community groups to benefit will include the Men’s Shed in Badger Creek and the Monbulk CFA Auxiliary.

Event organiser Jacqueline Sheppard said the show had gone from strength to strenth.

“There were around seven similar shows in the metropolitan areas on the weekend, so to get such

great numbers is fantastic,” she said.

“There seemed to be a greater variety of vehicles this year.

“The number of bikes this year, too, was pleasing; this is something we’ve been trying to build on.”

There were 20 trophies up for grabs on the day, which were awarded through an independent judging panel.

But Ms Shepard said the day was more about good fun and company.

Organisers had hoped to this year break the $100,000 mark for donations to local charities, but have fallen just short.

However, Ms Sheppard was confident they would reach the total next year.
