IT’S official, Noosa’s newest council took to the round table earlier this week as the six councillors and new mayor were sworn in. The ceremony took place at the council chambers on Tuesday 5 April in front of a crowded public gallery with notable attendees including Federal Member for Wide Bay Warren Truss and State member for Noosa Glen Elmes. Former councillor and mayoral candidate Sandy Bolton was also in attendance to wish the new council well. Mayor Tony Wellington welcomed the new councillors and thanked Noosa residents for their support in a light-hearted speech which was met by laughter from the public gallery. He also challenged the youngest councillor Jess Glasgow to a surf comp. Noosa’s new council is made up of four returning councillors including zero-waste advocate Joe Jurisevic, Frank Wilkie, Tony Wellington and long-time councillor Frank Pardon with 13 years of service under his belt. Joining the returning councillors are three new faces including the only female councillor Ingrid Jackson, the youngest member of council at 33 years Jess Glasgow and Brian Stockwell who is returning to local government after a 28-year hiatus. “Brian Stockwell was a Noosa councillor when he was a young fellow, we gathered together in the corridor just now where there is an array of photographs of past Noosa councils and we had great difficulty finding him among all the faces because, well, that’s because time has passed,” Cr Wellington joked. At the first post-election meeting of the new council, Noosa’s new Deputy Mayor Frank Wilkie was unanimously voted in by the council, uncontested. “Frank is a multi-talented individual; he was once the editor of a local newspaper many will remember and he is also well known to local theatre goers, so I think it’s fair to say that he performs well on a variety of stages,” Cr Wellington said. Cr Wellington also announced a “shuffle” of responsibilities within standing committees in a bid to share workload between the committees more evenly. The Planning and Environment Committee will consist of councillors Joe Jurisevic, Ingrid Jackson and Brian Stockwell, while councillors Frank Pardon, Frank Wilkie and Jess Glasgow will make up the Services and Organisation Committee.

Buffer to tackle bat WALLACE Park residents are a step closer to peaceful nights with vegetation works near the Wallace Park flying-fox roost due to start early this month. Noosa Council principal environment officer Peter Milne said council would selectively clear vegetation to maintain a 10-metre buffer between the roost and neighbouring homes. Mr Milne said the work had to wait until April to comply with national environmental law. “Works in or near a roost site are guided by environmental codes of practice to ensure there are no significant impacts on flying-foxes, which are protected under state and national law,” he said.

“Under the National Referral Guidelines, works cannot commence if there are dependant flying-fox young in the camp. We’ve recently inspected the colony to confirm that works can now proceed, weather permitting.” Mr Milne said council appreciated the flying-foxes were a source of concern for some residents. “Thankfully, the seasonal influx of little red flying-foxes has also headed north,” he said. Mr Milne said consultants Ecosure recommended selective vegetation clearing to provide separation between the Wallace Park flying-fox camp and neighbouring residents. Ecosure also recommended investigating the use of deterrents, such as a sprinkler sys-

tem, to ‘nudge’ the bats further from residential boundaries. “Council will be able to consider the use of boundary sprinklers at a future meeting once costs for such a system are finalised,” Mr Milne said. The flying-fox colonies at Wallace Park have been an ongoing issue for residents who say the smell and noise of the animals have made living in the area almost unbearable. Mr Milne said works were planned to commence on Tuesday 5 April depending on the location and numbers of the flying foxes at the time. “The vegetation works will provide separation between the flying fox roost and neigh-

Beyond burpees for Butterflies MORE than 50 members from local gym Flitefit in Peregian Beach have banded together to complete the ultimate burpees challenge last month, raising $750 for not-for-profit organisation and local charity Sunshine Butterflies. The Flite crew successfully performed a whopping 35,736 burpees in total, smashing their initial goal of 10,000. There were also some amazing individual results, with Dan Kelly, 52, completing over 3500, Babs Dunn, 78, completing 2005 and Jacqui and Luke Veary, completing 1970 as a team entry. Flitefit owners Nicki and David said they were thrilled by the response of their members. “We were thrilled with how they got behind such an important and worthwhile charity. Not only did we raise money for Sunshine Butterflies, but many of our members went beyond their own expectations and continually raised the bar and their perceived limitations. It has been an extraordinarily successful challenge all round," they said. Sunshine Butterflies is a not-for-profit organisation and registered charity that strives to improve all areas in the lives of people with disabilities by providing families with parental support, information and individual assistance, swim, social and recreational opportunities,

early intervention programs, post-school recreational programs, respite and personal fund-raising plans. CEO and Founder of Sunshine Butterflies Leanne Walsh said the charity was grateful for the donation. “I would like to thank Nicki, David and the rest of the Flitefit crew for their support and generosity. We are so grateful to every person who participated in the burpees challenge - each one has made an incredible difference, bringing new awareness and providing ongoing hope for individuals and families living with disability," she said. Finance intern makes her mark in world of money DAKOTA Waring is not your average 17-year-old with the inspirational teenager working hard and firmly focusing on a bright future. While other teens are enjoying a day at school or planning their weekends, Dakota is memorising job codes and learning about accounts receivable in her internship with local organisation United Synergies. Dakota is a student at the Noosa Flexible Learning Centre (NFLC) for two days a week and juggles her homework with a three-day finance internship where Dakota said she was learning invaluable skills for her future. “You mature a lot more, this job has really made me feel more prepared for the workforce,” Dakota said. “This is everything, I have new skills and an opportunity, I’m 17 and the opportunity I have is amazing.” United Synergies finance manager Toni McMullen said Dakota was recommended to the organisation by staff at NFLC. “Dakota earned the internship by putting herself out there and working hard,” Ms McMullen said. “We approached NFLC and they recommended Dakota because she had applied herself so

Matt’s among the best in the state LITTLE Athletics Noosa athlete Matt Brice has been selected to represent Queensland at the Asics Australian Little Athletics Championships in Adelaide on 24 April. Matt will compete in the under-13 boys 800m and 1500m events at the championships. Silver medals and personal best times in the 800m and 1500m events at the recent Little Athletics Queensland State Championships helped secure his place on the 26-member Queensland team. Representatives on the Queensland team were announced on the final day of competition at the state championships. This is the fifth time that Little Athletics Noosa has had athletes on the state team since 2011. Noosa’s head coach Mick Hooper said Matt’s selection on the state team was a great achievement. “Matt set himself a goal at the beginning of the season to make the state team, has worked hard and trained consistently well, and is now reaping the rewards,” Mr Hooper said. Thirty-eight athletes from Little Athletics Noosa competed at the recent state championships bringing home 28 medals in total; 14 gold, nine silver and five bronze. Noosa’s young athletes also set over 60 personal best times and distances during the championships. Young future’s a bright one National Youth Week is a great chance to celebrate the achievements, vitality and strength of young people as well as acknowledge their valuable contribution to the local community. National Youth Week runs from Friday 8 April to Sunday 17 April and this year’s theme is Be The Future. To celebrate National Youth Week, Noosa Today has found some of Noosa’s inspirational local youth whose stories are highlighted.

Aiden loves his netball AIDEN de Boer isn’t afraid to buck trends and has hit the court to prove he’s serious about netball. The predominantly female sport has often meant boys are left on the sidelines out of fear they will be teased for playing a “girl’s” sport but as Aiden has shown, it’s a great sport that anyone can play. Aiden confessed he was initially concerned about how he would be accepted and was apprehensive to take the court on week one, but as soon as the whistle was blown it was down to business with the rest of the team. Having a mum who is a coach, umpire and player, a sister playing and a father involved in social mixed netball meant he spent many an hour sitting courtside watching and learning. When the opportunity to actually join a team came up, he just couldn’t say no. This year he decided to switch from soccer and join the Noosaville Emeralds team. Aiden said he liked the skills and agility needed to be a great netball player. “It’s quick, you have to think fast, you need good ball skills and everyone has a job to do,” he said. “The game is over in no time, and you

want to start again. My first week playing this season was amazing; so many people congratulated me on my skills, nothing to do with being different. “I just hope that more boys will want to play and maybe one day we could have a boys or mixed competition.” Aiden’s mum Christine de Boer said Aiden had been accepted by the team without any issues and said she hoped Aiden could play netball for a while longer. “We’ve been advised that Noosa Netball adheres to the current Netball Australia Junior policy which states boys can play up to the age of 12,” she said. “That gives us another year or two to work towards getting the word out there. It would be fabulous for Aiden to be able to continue playing, but we’d need a lot more boys. A mixed seniors competition for Noosa would also be a great idea.” Ms de Boer said it took a lot of “confidence” and “strong-mindedness” for Aiden to join the team and said she hoped opposition players, parents and supporters offer male players positive encouragement.

Forgotten service shines Ron Lane's

people IT WAS an open day at the Noosa Coast Guard - a day when the general public is invited in to meet the team and have an escorted walk around the premises. Also, it gives them the opportunity to have a close look at the boats that patrol our waters. However for Coast Guard Commander Alan Hall it soon turned into a day that was to leave this veteran of 15 years somewhat flabbergasted and disappointed. The cause of this was that after talking to them and answering their questions he came to realise, that for many of these people, despite having lived on the coast for years, they were totally ignorant of not only the purpose of the Coast Guard, but above all just who they were. “I just could not believe it,” he said, ‘“but some people actually thought that we were in fact lifesavers and belonged to the club down the beach. We may laugh about it but now in fact it is really very sad.’’ Despite experiencing this sort of attitude, Alan does not let it get at him, for he is still as dedicated as ever. What a lot of people don’t know is that Noosa has a great team of 105 dedicated voluntary members, of which some 15 per cent are women. For 71-year-old Alan, his love of the sea and boats started back in his home town Edgware Middlesex England. “After leaving high school I started in the workforce as an apprentice plumber, and after my apprenticeship I became self-employed. I did this for several years and then moved on to running a fishing charter boat in the Thames Estuary, a business I was to run for the next four years.’’ It was during this time that Alan, when on a blind date arranged by some friends, met an attractive young hairdresser named Susan; a friendship started and in 1965 they married. Now they are the very proud parents of three boys. For Alan and Susan their first contact with Australia came in 1980 when on a holiday they visited Alan’s sister who had migrated in 1970. Such was their impression of Australia that on returning to England they decided that they too would migrate; one year later they were back in Australia; this time for good. On their arrival in Australia they settled in Baulkham Hills Sydney where they were to live for the next 20 years.

Noosa's unsung heroes: Rodney Kulhmann, Commander Alan Hall, Eiver Thetford and Linda Kulhmann. ‘“Our love affair with Noosa started in 1981 when we visited while on holidays. We loved the place and always wanted to come back, but we realised that work was really hard to get. After reaching retirement we decided to sell up and in 2001 we made the shift to Noosa. The thing that attracted us to Australia and in particular Noosa, was the fact that after England everything was so colorful; in particular Noosa. Alan did not hesitate. Immediately on arrival and after a discussion with his wife, he joined the Coast Guard. “Settling in was easy. They were a great team and they made me feel at ease. I immediately started doing my basic training which would took me to competent crew member. “This course takes six months; and during this time we are referred to as back deck operators. After this I continued other advanced training. As a result of these courses I eventually reached skipper grading; first level was restricted, then offshore and finally the rank of unrestricted skipper.

“Speaking about our patrol work we can go to sea with a crew of three but normally it is four. “All crewies are fully qualified; and of course this training includes radio and first aid. Being a member of such a volunteer organisation gives us something of which we can be very proud. “The dedication of the Noosa coast guard members is very high.” Because the coast guard and the surf lifesaving members of the Jet Boat Rescue Service are basically doing the same work, their paths often cross and on many occasions when search and rescue situations arise, they do in fact work in close harmony. “One thing that I have always enjoyed was our friendship with the lifesavers of the Jet Boat Service. Often when having a break during patrol they would call in at our base and we would all join in for a coffee. “We got to know each other and the relationship was great. Then we were informed that the service was being transferred to another area of patrol and we were very disappointed and I must say a bit mystified. We

were really sad to see them go.” The work load for Alan and his people is virtually 24/7, seven days a week. On weekends and public holidays the observation tower situated at the mouth of the Noosa Bar, is also manned by radio operators. For Alan and all members at administration level, perhaps the major concern is and always will be finance. “To run our station would cost us in the vicinity of $200,000 a year of which we have to raise $150,000 ourselves and the rest comes through government assistance. “The big expense is of course our patrol boats but naturally we don’t have to change them every year. “To replace one of our big boats, say a 10.23-metre mono hull, we could be up for something like $1.2 million, the next size down would cost $500,000, and the smallest in the fleet $100,000. The life of the big boats with top-class maintenance could stretch out to 20 years. When we discussed the public concept of the Coast Guard organisation, it became obvious that here was

a subject that was indeed a problem. “Sometimes you get the feeling that we are indeed the forgotten service; the only time they think about us is when they are out at sea and something goes wrong. As I said before some people even think that we are just a part of the lifesaving club. Incredible!" What the general public doesn’t realise is that in a busy year they can get anything up to 180 boat rescues and 35 boat rollovers in the Noosa Bar. “When we tally the number of people involved in these dangerous situations,” said Allen, “boat crews, families, tourists, fisherman, our tally for a year’s rescue work has touched a total of 800 lives that have been placed in jeopardy during these operations.” It was just on 8am on the first Saturday in October 1984, and the newly opened three-tower system, located on Noosa beach had been operational for approximately a total of 30 minutes. With tower number one being front of the surf club, two at the rock wall and three (the tower manned by Coast Guard) at the mouth of Noosa Bar, the entire beach plus the bar was under total observation. However because of the length of the rock wall, a blind spot was created at the left corner of the middle tower. Fortunately this area could be covered by cross vision by the Coast Guard. At 8.05 the guard tower raised the alarm, three men in big trouble. One man was swept out and two others had gone to his assistance; all unobserved by the middle tower, because of the blind spot. On receiving the Coast Guard alarm a boat team was dispatched, and in big surf the three men were rescued. As a result of the team work of the Coast Guard and lifesavers, an incident that would be repeated many times over in the years ahead, had been responsible for the saving of the men; ironically an old grandfather and his two young grandsons. A massive family tragedy avoided. When this incident was related to Alan he again mentioned their relationship with the jet boat crews. One of his fondest memories was being able to create a great friendship with these men. “Two teams doing the same job,” he said. For Alan, who has for 15 years quietly gone about his job, moved up through the ranks from back deck operator to commander, you are not the forgotten service; for you and your team, are all our people.

EMBER for Noosa Glen Elmes has welcomed the government’s confronting new campaign designed to stop violent attacks on paramedics and health workers in Queensland. Mr Elmes said an awareness campaign was important so the public can see just how vital paramedics and ambulance workers were within the community. “It is not acceptable for people to threaten the safety of our frontline paramedics and ambulance officers,” he said. “Our local ambos work tirelessly to ensure the people of the Noosa Electorate are protected and well looked after. “These men and women are out there risking their own safety to save the lives of others, and we should ensure they are protected.” Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Cameron Dick launched the new $1.35 million public awareness campaign at the end of March. “When most Queenslanders go to work, they don’t have to factor in being assaulted as part of their day,” he said. “Sadly, being punched, bitten, slapped, kicked, and even spat on is a reality for healthcare workers.” Mr Dick said more than 3300 healthcare workers were physically assaulted last financial year. “Let’s be honest, it’s just not on,” he said. “Any person found guilty of assaulting a healthcare worker can receive up to 14 years in prison.” The LNP, who launched and sponsored a community petition calling for the public awareness campaign in December last year, is also calling for a trial of body cameras for

paramedics and the expansion of Ambulance Violence Taskforce to all health workers. Mr Elmes said he welcomed the public awareness campaign after months of pressuring the opposition to take action. “Noosa’s health workers deserve to have the government exploring every avenue to ensure they can work in a safe environment.” Mr Dick said he was aware the new campaign was not the sole solution to the issue. “This is not a quick fix,” he said. “It is however, a step in the right direction as we try to change people’s attitudes towards what is acceptable behaviour and what is not.” The campaign started this month and includes a mix of advertising on social and digital media, television and out-of-home advertisements on billboards and bus stops. Mr Dick said the public awareness campaign was a recommendation from the interim report by the Paramedic Safety Taskforce and admitted most Queenslanders might find the campaign content confronting. “The ads are full-on but in reality, it can get a lot worse,” he said. “There is absolutely no excuse for anyone to abuse or physically assault a healthcare worker. “As a community, we have an essential role to play in keeping our healthcare workers safe. “Our healthcare workers deserve our respect and gratitude for the important work they do.” The campaign can be viewed at www.youtube.com/healthierqueensland.

Secrets turns a very sweet 16 NOOSA-BASED fine and fashion jewellery retailer Secrets is celebrating 16 years in business this year. Sixteen years ago beautiful designer jewellery with stones larger than 1 carat were simply out of reach for more than 90 per cent of women. Being motivated to change this and to be able to offer women an alternative, Secrets co-founder and managing director Jane Meredith researched the new technology in diamond simulants that was emerging in the late nineties. “We were amazed at what we discovered; a stone that looked like a diamond, sparkled like a diamond and had brilliance that would last a lifetime,” Ms Meredith said. Ms Meredith opened the first Secrets store in Bay Village, Hastings Street, in 2000 and has since grown the company to become a respected fine and fashion jewellery retailer with stores throughout Australia and online. “We started out with a small shop in Bay Village Noosa Heads. I was really unsure how women would react to the concept of stateof-the-art diamond simulants

Cooler to read it THE Cooroy Library has earned a place on a list of the world’s coolest libraries. Property and urban development industry news website TheUrbanDeveloper.com has named Cooroy among six libraries that are leading a digital shift. The article, Six of the World’s Coolest Modern Libraries, ranks the local library with Austria’s Vienna University of Economics Library, Singapore’s Bishan Public Library, Poland’s Warsaw University Library, Scotland’s University of Aberdeen New Library and Germany’s Stuttgart City Library. Noosa Mayor-elect Tony Wellington said he welcomed the library’s recognition as one of the world’s best. “It shows that here in Noosa we can deliver world-class building design as well as cutting edge library services,” Cr Wellington said. “It’s certainly an honour to be chosen among the best library facilities on the planet. “The sort of recognition the Cooroy Library has achieved shows our commitment to innovation and community wellbeing. It is also a drawcard for the wonderful hinterland town of Cooroy.” Built in 2009, the Brewster Hjorth Architects-designed library includes a grassed roof that serves as an outdoor amphitheatre, a technology centre, digital training rooms, community rooms, community lounge, reading areas and a cafe, which provides workplace training opportunities for local young people. “The building is cut into the ground, with the grass covered rooftop significantly reducing energy consumption

NOOSA Council is driving community engagement, thanks to new software from Sydney-based global technology company Pitney Bowes Software. The new software, installed on council’s website, is designed to improve public access to information via online mapping services through what is called Spectrum Spatial Analyst mapping software. The software means locals and visitors to the region can now access maps of a complete range of local community information and services. The Pitney Bowes solution allows residents to easily search for and accurately locate council services, including property information, planning scheme zones, flood zones and fire hazards, public transport and bike paths, bin and recycling collection days, and emergency information such as evacuation centres and routes. Being a tourist hot spot, visitors can access information such as the location of WiFi access points, parks, playgrounds, beach access, surfing and fishing spots, and boat ramps. This information can also be

accessed via mobile devices at any hour of the day. For the council, the self-service solution increases internal productivity by significantly reducing the number of calls the customer service line receives. Noosa Shire Council ICT manager Justin Thomas said improving community engagement and satisfaction was a priority for council. “With Pitney Bowes, our citizens have access to the information when they want it and how they want it,” he said. “Additionally, the software solution can be hosted in the cloud, which means tremendous cost savings for the council.” Pitney Bowes Asia Pacific vicepresident and managing director David Hope said the company had been able to assist Noosa Shire Council to address its challenge to drive community engagement and position itself at the forefront of the government’s wider digital transformation plan. “Our mapping solutions deliver the accuracy and precision communities require as they engage with citizens online,” he said.

Dogs are barking I JUST wanted to give Bobby Aitkin a “thumbs up" on his letter (Noosa Today, 17 March) about the NFOS. I would have been in his Over 65 class had I entered one more time to surf First Point with only five other competitors and would have suffered with his same “surf rage“ about the event and conditions in the festival when it’s flat. And when the “dogs" get priority over the ol’ longboarders that put this place on the map, something’s not right in paradise. Suggestion; have a whole separate festival and event for “dog-surfing” and SUPS. No probs for us ol’ boys! And let’s get back to what this event was, and is still meant to be; longboard surfing period. Put the “S” back in NFOS and give the Noosa Malibu Club proper recognition as the founder of the event “way back when“. Law a life breaker ABIDING by speed limits sometimes involves taking your life in your hands. We regularly use the Peregian Springs roundabout. Twice in the last two weeks while sticking to the posted 40km/h limit on roundabouts, we have been cut off by some fool who,

fed up with our not going fast enough for him in the centre lane, as we were about to exit into the single-lane Peregian Beach exit, charged out from behind us and swerved perilously close across our front bumper as he continued going around to the next exit. If I had increased my speed only minimally, we would have collided, it was that close. Where are the police with their cameras when things like this happen? They’re busy ticketing law-abiding drivers who happen to unwittingly exceed the speed limit by two km/h! But then again, isn’t it easier for police to park themselves in one spot and just wait, instead of driving around looking for reckless drivers such as this? Patricia Evans, Noosa.

Recount is a must THE ECQ not allowing a recount of the sixth and seventh place for Noosa councillors separated by 10 votes is denying a person’s natural justice. A claim by ECQ is that the count was accurate and supported by technology. If this was the case then why did the count take abnormally so long? Together with a high 11.5 per cent informal vote, it’s not without reason to expect errors due to the pressure of getting the count completed. We all know individuals who have all the charm of a dial tone, who recite all the things that are wrong in their lives and in those of others and we may sometimes even avoid them. If you are the victim of negative emotions then itâ€™s time to change. THE Noosa Regional Gallery has announced 25 finalists in the inaugural Lyn McCrea Memorial Drawing Prize. Gallery director Nina Shadforth said the finalists hailed from across Australia. They include six interstate artists, 14 Sunshine Coast-based artists and six artists from broader Queensland. “There was an overwhelming response for the inaugural prize,” Ms Shadforth said. Dedicated to the memory of contemporary visual artist, art educator and collector, the late Lyn McCrea, the national, acquisitive award promotes excellence in contemporary Australian drawing. Art prize founder John McCrea says he is pleased to see entries from both local and interstate artists. “It’s good to see that contemporary drawing is gaining recognition in the Australian arts scene,” he said. Noosa ready to jazz it up NOOSA’S annual Jazz Party is heating up with 10 days of jam-packed events ready to satisfy even the most enthusiast jazz lover. Get ready to block out your calendars as over 30 musicians descend on Noosa for another fun-filled, jazz-infused party celebrating great music in the most scenic of destinations. The party starts with two concerts ‘New Orleans to The Met’ featuring The Australian Jazz Ensemble lead by Bob Barnard, in conjunction with Noosa Chorale, at The J, Noosa Junction, on 26 and 27 August. The centrepiece of the event is four nights of improvised jazz at The J, from 1 to 4 September. Each night will consist of one-hour sets of fabulous jazz featuring Australia’s top jazz musicians. Curbing the obesity crisis WINTER is just around the corner, but the Cancer Council is warning people away from comfort food as a new study shows more people worldwide are now obese than underweight. The Lancet study revealed global obesity has increased by 167 per cent since 1975, compared to a 35 per cent drop in the number of underweight people, prompting Cancer Council to call for urgent action to curb the crisis. Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said Australia was among the developed countries worst affected. “The average body mass index in Australia is now in the overweight range of 25-29.9 for both women (26.8) and men (27.5), well above

the healthy BMI range of 18.5 to 24.9,” Ms Clift said. “This is in large part due to excess intake of kilojoules, with evidence suggesting the consumption of sugar-sweetened soft drinks has increased by 30 per cent over the past 10 years in Australia. “On current trends, 37 per cent of Australian women and 37.8 per cent of men will be obese by 2025.” Almost a fifth of the world’s obese adults and more than a quarter of the world’s severely obese people live in the six high-income countries of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Britain and the US. Currently, nearly 13 per cent of the global population are obese (641 million people in 2014), compared to around nine per cent who are underweight. “These stats are a wake-up call, highlighting the rapid acceleration of obesity in Australia and globally,” Ms Clift said. “Of significant concern, overweight and obesity is a key risk factor for cancer and other chronic diseases. “These figures again show the obesity crisis ballooning out of control - we need to do more to ensure all Australians live their healthiest and happiest lives possible. “Along with all of us taking personal responsibility to ensure a healthy diet, community organisations and governments have a role to play in reversing these trends.” Last month, Cancer Council Queensland urged federal and state governments to examine a range of opportunities to arrest Australia’s burgeoning obesity crisis. Strategies recommended by Cancer Council include following the UK’s lead to tax soft drinks, as well as banning soft drink vending machines and the marketing of soft drinks to children.

The Cancer Council is urging Queenslanders to stick to healthy foods as obesity rates increase. “We welcome State Government action to restrict the sale of sugar-sweetened beverages in all schools (primary and secondary) and other places frequented by children,” Ms Clift said. “We further recommend active consideration of measures to reduce the availability of sugar-sweetened beverages in workplaces, government institutions, health care settings and other public places. “The World Health Organisation recommends limiting sugar consumption from both food and drinks to no more than six teaspoons

a day for optimum health. “Unfortunately, not enough Queenslanders are offsetting extra kilojoules from unhealthy food and drink choices with adequate exercise, resulting in overweight and obesity. “Regular exercise and a healthy low-sugar diet is key to maintaining health and happiness - we need to do all we can to ensure this is as easy as possible for all Australians.” More information about Cancer Council Queensland, and living a healthy life, is available via 13 11 20 or cancerqld.org.au.

This easy to make recipe uses ingredients already in your cupboard and is quick and easy so you wonâ€™t miss your favourite show. Ingredients: 1/4 cup vegetable oil 1/2 cup popping corn 125g butter, chopped 3/4 cup white sugar

2 tablespoons honey Method: Line a tray with baking paper. Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add two pieces of popping corn. If corn slowly turns around in a circle, then oil is hot enough. Add remaining popping corn. Cover with a tight-fitting lid. When corn starts popping, shake saucepan gently. Remove from heat when corn stops popping. Transfer to a large bowl, discarding any unpopped corn.

Make caramel: Combine butter, sugar and honey in a saucepan over medium heat. Cook, stirring, for five to seven minutes or until sugar has dissolved. Bring mixture to the boil. Boil, uncovered, without stirring, for five to eight minutes or until light golden. Remove from heat. Pour caramel mixture over popcorn and stir until popcorn is coated. Spread over prepared tray. Set aside to cool. Break into pieces. Serve.

A WELL-KNOWN charity has put the call out to the community to help raise funds to meet rising demands on services. beyondblue is well-known in the community for helping people with depression and anxiety and is calling on community members to help raise funds in what beyondblue CEO Georgie Harman said is a first for the charity. “For the first time since beyondblue was established in 2000, we’re asking the community to help us to continue to meet rising demand for our 24/7 Support Service by holding a beyondblue Bash to raise funds,” Ms Harman said. Ms Harman said the charity was encouraging people to come up with fun and original ideas to raise funds. “The simplest are often the most successful. You could put a loose change jar in the office, make a gold coin donation to wear casual blue clothes to school or work, ask your friends to knit blue squares to be made into a rug to be raffled at a community event, mark the boundary lines or goal squares in blue to raise money at your sports club’s beyondblue Bash,” she said. “You could even paint your front gate blue and keep a donation tin on the kitchen bench if visitors wish to donate. Proposed cuts to child dental benefits slammed A LOCAL dentist has vowed to fight potential government cuts to child dental benefits. Divine Dental Noosa principal dentist Dr Clive Creager said he was concerned over a recent update from the Australian Dental Association (ADA) informing him of funding cuts to The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS). “As a member of the ADA, I have received a very concerning update about the current CDBS,” Dr Creager said. “The Federal Health Minister, The Hon Sussan Ley recently questioned the current CDBS and stated that the funding could be better allocated elsewhere.

“Which means there is a very real possibility the scheme will not exist after 1 July, leaving the three million children currently eligible under the scheme with reduced access to the vital preventive treatment the scheme currently provides.” Dr Creager said the scheme was well received by the dental profession and said the ADA was encouraging members to lobby the government to continue the scheme. “The scheme has been widely applauded by the dental profession for helping kids get access to dentistry early in life, thus putting

them on the right track for a lifetime of good oral health,” he said. “I will be personally putting my voice to this campaign. The ADA are hoping the public will write to their local MP stating how important the scheme is to the dental health of our children.” The CDBS is a Commonwealth is a dental benefits program for eligible children aged two to 17 years that provides up to $1000 in benefits over two years to the child for basic dental services. MATT Wilkinson pumped down the line on his backhand, gaining speed for the open face ahead. He twisted his body, pressed his knees into his board and unleashed the move that would brand him as a champion in the making. As he soared high above the break, a packed audience on the beach and in the stands held their collective breath. There was an audible sigh as Wilkinson landed it, caught a rail, corrected, then lost it. He hadn’t quite pulled it off, but it was the move of the contest. I wrote that five years ago in a profile for my book, Australia’s Hottest 100 Surfing Legends, after watching Wilko blow up at the Quiksilver Pro. Okay, the making of the champion has taken a bit longer than anticipated, and along the way the kid from Copacabana has been written off as the class clown and a good-time Charlie who was more interested in being last to leave the party than he was in winning a world title. And they’re still throwing darts at him! The surfing writer for our national newspaper described his style in winning last month’s Quiksilver Pro as “bogan”. Even within the strong Rip Curl team he has long been held up as the exemplar of “team spirit” rather than world champ material like team-mates Mick Fanning and Gabriel Medina. But make no mistake, Wilko is sitting pretty comfortably in his yellow jersey after the first two events of the WSL season, with daylight between his perfect score (not to mention $200,000 sitting in his sometimes sketchy bank account) and the rest of the field. And with Gabby Medina down at the bottom of the field and Fanning taking time out from touring, he is Rip Curl’s Great White Hope for a title. Of course, with nine events still to run, and two end-of-season throwaway scores to factor in, it is far too early to make rash predictions, but two things seem likely to play into his favour. The second is that Wilko’s personality seems immune to pressure situations. At Bells last Sunday, in the break before the final, he was cracking wise and high-fiving buddies while Jordy Smith, himself a pretty cool cat most of the time, seemed tense and perhaps unable to get over the fact that he had beaten Mick Fanning to secure his berth. Wilko became the first goofy foot to win Bells since 1998, and although I prefer the silky smooth attack of that year’s winner, Mark Occhilupo, and the best backhander I ever saw at Bells, Wayne Lynch, he ain’t no bogan! Relief for village from Festival Fiji Appeal Proceeds from our Cyclone Winston Appeal at the Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing have been delivered directly to one of the worst-hit villages. Noosa’s Scott and Sacha Cairns presented the chief of Dreketi Village on Qamea Island, Ratu Laginikoro Dakuiyau with 1450 Fiji dollars, which the chief said would be used to buy food supplies, like flour, potatoes, taro and kasava, since the village crops, including their root staples, had been wiped out. Ratu was also quite stoked in his festival T-shirt. A further $3000 raised at two charity auctions will be donated to the Red Cross Cyclone Winston Appeal. A big shout out to the generous bidders and the even more generous folk who donated such great stuff for these auctions. A prayer for Uncle Buff News from Makaha this week that one of the greats of Hawaiian surfing is ailing. Richard “Buffalo” Keaulana was one of the pioneers of modern “hot dog” surfing in Hawaii in the 1950s, won the prestigious Makaha International and became known as the spirit of aloha on Oahu’s dusty and poor Westside beaches. Buffalo and Momie raised a fine family at Makaha, among them multiple world longboard champion Rusty Keaulana and his older brother Brian, one of the finest watermen in the world. I’d met Buffalo in the '70s, but had

no contact with the family for 20 years until I found myself touring for Quiksilver in Europe with Rusty. I invited him to come to the first Noosa Festival of Surfing in 1998, and he loved it so much he promised to come back the following year with Brian and Buff. In 1999 Buffalo Keaulana was our guest of honour, leading the traditional Hawaiian opening ceremony and surfing with distinction and a great sense of fun, and Brian became a festival regular for many years. In 2003, I had to call in a favour from Buff when the Quiksilver World Masters Championships I’d planned for Morocco were cancelled after George Bush invaded Iraq. I didn’t quite get the connection, but the Quik board was insistent that we were not going to a Muslim country, and we had to find an alternative venue in a hurry. The Keaulana clan welcomed us to Makaha with open arms, the surf pumped and it was the best of the four Masters that I ran.

I can’t look at it without thinking of Buffalo’s true aloha spirit, which I’m sure he is carrying into this fight for his life. Strength, brudda.

Surface fishing pays off By JACK MANGROVE MANGROVE Jack and trevally have been on the bite after dark with darker plastics and bigger strip baits working well. Between the Lakes has been fishing very well of late, large number of baitfish and prawns have been flushed downriver on the tide, so the runout tide is best time to plan your attack. Surface fishing around the back of the sound has been paying off with anglers getting good results on trevally. The Jackson range of poppers and surface walkers have proved to be extremely successful. The river mouth is also firing with golden trevally and tailor coming in on the tide, fishing small pilchard baits or mullet strips can also result in some quality bream. Crabbers have been benefiting from the recent rains; crabs will often move to more saline water or seek refuge in the deeper holes when we see a bit of fresh water in the system. Fresh bait works best for muddies, whole fresh mullet and or fresh fish frames will have the muddies crawling all over each other. Remember the rules with crabbing that you

can only take four pots per person, and that all your pots and floats (floats must be six inches in diameter) have your name and contact details clearly written on both the float and the pot. On the beaches; Noosa’s Northshore has had plenty of activity, with quality whiting, bream, flathead, tailor and dart all on the bite. Putting in the time to find a decent gutter has been the biggest benefit to anglers. Looking out and seeing the waves breaking a little further offshore and then reforming to break on the beach is a pretty good indicator of a nice gutter. Cast to the back of the gutter and roll the bait back into the gutter for the best results. Offshore; those that made the run outside have been well rewarded. Laguna Bay was alive with mac tuna and longtail tuna as well as the odd Spanish and spotted mackerel. Floating pillies, trolled baits and trolled lures all claiming their fair share. Sunshine Reef saw good numbers of coral trout on livies and micro jigs, sweetlip, snapper and tusk fish were also in the mix. Up on North Reef, anglers were

Longtail and yellowfin tuna were also in the mix. Metal slugs, micro jigs and soft plastics on a fast retrieve all worked well. Out on the Barwon Banks

there have been some large snapper and pearl perch on the chew. Double Island reefs have also seen some great fish with the odd red in the mix. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures.

Numbers swell for Dolphins THE Noosa Dolphins have capped off the biggest pre-season training in years with over 44 Under 10 rugby union players signing up for the 2016 season. Last season saw only two teams representing Noosa, however this year there will be three teams; Noosa Reds, Noosa Fins and Noosa Blue.

The recently completed development rounds, as well as training, have assisted coaching staff to pick three even teams taking into account size, position and experience. The Dolphins juniors are set to kick off a great 2016 season after the Easter School holidays.

ON Saturday morning the Noosa Seahorse Nippers opened their fourth season, and happy to relate the success of this great organisation continues. Organiser Steve Mawby said, “Our first day was incredible. Thirty-nine children were in attendance and between 60 and 70 helpers worked on the beach. We would again thank shire council for their on-going support; also the members who worked the car park. A long and thankless job.” Sunday at Noosa the bronze squad in training completed their course and a ceremony was conducted to welcome them into the clubs. The chief training officer Steve Crisp congratulated them on behalf of the training team and wished them well in their career. He then introduced two guests, Noosa Life Member Ross Fisher and vice-president of Sunshine Beach club Peter Brewer. On behalf of the Life Members, Ross extended a very warm welcome and emphasised the importance of their job as patrolling members. Regarding the squad itself, he said, “The

fact that this squad is made up of members from both clubs is indeed very good and I hope it continues. "I would also like to thank the training team on a job well done.” Representing Sunshine, Peter Brewer also extended his congratulations. He also emphasised the fact that the two clubs have trained together. “Let’s face it, we are all doing the same job, and it is great to see them working as one team,” he said. Several times this year, this concept of both clubs training together has been undertaken. Happy to relate it has been an outstanding success. With the National Park being situated between both clubs and courtesy patrols being performed, combined training in not only the bronze but also the IRB driving and crewies, is a massive step forward; and most important of all, it can do wonders for the moral of our teams. It is interesting to note that during Saturday Seahorse Nippers there were members from Sunshine and Alexandra Headlands among the helpers. This season we have seen more clubs working together than ever before. This is what lifesaving is all about. Last week we received the sad news that a man who had become an important part of the

history of the Noosa club had passed away after a long illness. His name is Peter Lobban and apart from his associate membership of Noosa, Peter was also an old boy of Bondi. During the early 60s, Peter and his wife Fay ran a general store in Hasting Street. It was during this time that I, as club captain, and two other senior members, vice-captain Jim Schofield and chief instructor Merv Cummings were called to a meeting at his shop. On arrival, he informed us that he wanted to donate a trophy that would become the most prestigious and sought-after award in the club's history. We immediately agreed and so the famous Lobban Cup came into being. It was to be for the most outstanding lifesaver of the year. Surf Sport was not to be taken into consideration, as it was purely a lifesaving award. Also club captains were not eligible for the award, as their position gave them more opportunities through their workload. Most important of all, if there were no outstanding nominations, the award must not be presented. It was first awarded at the end of the 1962/'63 season and the first winner of the Lobban Cup was Graham Andrews. Since 1962/'63 there have been 10 seasons after which the award was not presented. To Peter's wife Fay and family, our thoughts and prayers are with you. Your husband/father, our club mate, is gone – but not forgotten.

Rewarded with tours TWO local Noosa boys have been rewarded for their efforts by being selected for softball tours. Luke Thomas has been selected to represent Australia at the 2016 WBSC Junior Men’s World Championship in Michigan USA between 24 and 30 July and Riley Murrihy has been selected for the Aussie Sparks under 15 tour of New Zealand starting on 14 April. Both boys have had a stellar year, with Luke enjoying success with the Queensland team at the National Championships as runners-up and last week winning the A Grade grand final at Redcliffe. Luke has spent 10 years playing as a Noosa member and always gives back to the local comp when he can. Luke, like Riley, plays 12 months a year in comps between here and Redlands, keeping both boys very busy.

Festival winds up on beach By RON LANE THE wind-up Noosa beach party at the end of the annual Noosa Surf Festival was again a big success. The purpose of this party is twofold. First of all, it celebrates the success of the Surf Festival and second and most important it is used as a charity fund-raiser in support of people or organisations in need. What could be better for a charity fundraiser than an afternoon party on Main Beach? Organised and sponsored by Noosa Surf Club, this year the funds raised were in support noosatoday.com.au

Surf Club chairman Ian Young said, “Apart from helping other clubs it is also our way of thanking the community for their support of our club down through the years.” The fund-raiser was well supported by a good cross section of the community and among those present were delegates from all codes; plus Bruce Davidson, Sandy Bolton, Frank Pardon, businessmen John Little and Peter Tyne just to mention a few of the dignities.

In his welcome address, Surf Club manager Anton Mogg made particular reference to the festival organisers Phil Jarret and Sam Smith, “First of all congratulations to them on the success of the festival, and also we acknowledge their contribution of these facilities and their support of these charities.” The party which started at 2pm and went until 6pm was entertained by the Dennis Wight Trio, a local country rock group starting to make big waves in the world of entertainment; food and drink was readily available. All this resulted in $7000 being raised for distribution among the codes. An afternoon well spent.

Riley’s year consisted of winning the under 15 national Championships with Qld Storm, followed up with a win at the under 19 Qld schoolboys titles with the presidents team and winning the under 15 grand final at Redcliffe with his team and the best player award. You will see these boys training nearly every night at Noosa under the guidance of Richard W and anyone else they can get to throw a ball at them. Riley, as he was dragged with his brothers to softball, has 11 years at Noosa, and also comes back to help when he can – the latest being he umpired on grand final day. Both these boys should be proud of their achievements as they are part of a larger group that will go on to represent Noosa at the highest level of sport. Currently, there is Shinai Gibbons training for the under 19 girl’s National championships in Melbourne in May.
