‘No more excuses’ By KATH GANNAWAY THE Royal Commission into Family Violence released Wednesday 30 March has delivered a raft of 227 recommendations to the Victorian Government. Premier Daniel Andrews responded with a broad commitment to implement every one of the recommendations and said work was already underway on recommendations around risk management and information sharing. “There can be no more excuses,” he said. “Our work begins today to overhaul our broken family violence system from the bottom up.” The commission’s recommendations that call for new approaches cover a number of key areas including the establishment of support and safety hubs in local communities to make it easier for victims to find help and access a greater range of services. Other recommendations are for: Victims’ safety being forefront over ‘privacy issues’ with a Central Information Point to funnel information about perpetrators to the hubs. An immediate funding boost to services that support victims and families with additional resources for Aboriginal community initiatives, and with a dedicated funding stream for preventing family violence. Expanded investigative capacity for police and more specialist family violence courts that can deal simultaneously with criminal, civil and family law matters. Stronger perpetrator programs and increased monitoring and oversight by agencies. Family violence training for all key workforces, including in hospitals and schools. Among these recommendations, two address the recurring and underlying issues that the Mail touched on in its six-week ‘Stop the Violence Campaign’ in 2011. They are a lack of accommodation for victims, which effectively stops them leaving a violent situation, and the need to address the cause of family violence from an early age. The commission’s recommendations call for a ‘blitz’ to rehouse women and children forced to leave their homes which would be supported with expanded individual funding packages. Continued on page 3

The track of our dreams By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS THE proposed Villages of Mount Dandenong walking track would preserve the artistic history of the Dandenongs and bring local artists to the forefront. Federal MP for La Trobe Jason Wood said the track, along with a national heritage registration for the national park, would preserve and inform the history of the mountains. “Most locals wouldn’t know the history of the Dandenongs,” he said. The walking track would include 14 kilometres of new and existing trails through the mountains starting from
Birdsland Reserve in Belgrave and ending in Montrose. The track would include historical markers and artworks from local artists that celebrate the history of art and creativity the Dandenong Ranges have inspired. Historical painters such as Eugene von Guerard, Tom Roberts and Arthur Streeton would be among those whose works of the Dandenong Ranges would be central to the walking track. “Rather than having to go to a gallery to experience the beauty of the Dandenongs, we want to preserve this landscape and use this track to feature
the hills,” Mr Wood said. Yarra Ranges Director Social and Economic Development Ali Wastie said the walking track would give council “a real opportunity to celebrate what we have.” Along with the development of the walking track, Mr Wood has made a commitment to apply for a National Heritage status for the Dandenongs to preserve the landscape. “The National Heritage application would not interfere with private residents or any other planning statutes,” Mr Wood said.
“It would be designed to fit with and complement the national park.” The walking track will be designed to give both locals and tourists to the area a chance to explore and learn about the Dandenong Ranges. According to Yarra Ranges Council modelling, the track would also deliver great economic returns to the communities it travels through. “The track would create 36 direct construction jobs for local trades and craftspeople,” Ms Wastie said. At an estimated cost of $5.78 million to design and build, Ms Wastie
said the money returned to communities through tourism would be eightfold. While Yarra Ranges Council and Jason Wood have committed to funding the project, state MP James Merlino has not yet made a solid commitment. “I am always open to suggestions for improvements to the walking trails in the Dandenong Ranges,” Mr Merlino said. “As yet, Yarra Ranges Council haven’t submitted a proposal to State Government."

Future stars are sought MONBULK and surrounds Auskick will kick off the 2016 football season on Friday 8 April. With Auskick last year moving to a 4.30pm Friday timeslot, participation numbers have increased, but more are greatly needed. Auskick at the Monbulk Reserve is all about focusing on fun and participation.
As the 15-week season progresses, teamwork and football skills are acquired. The club’s Auskick co-ordinator Mark Mannens said the children gained a lot from the Auskick experience. “Our five to 10-year-olds immediately experience the warmth and culture that comes with being surrounded by the older junior football club
teams,” he said. “Mums and dads are encouraged to join in the fun.” Mr Mannens said the club was also seeking a second coach, with no experience necessary. He said it was never too late to join in the fun. “Boys and girls from Monbulk and all surrounding areas are encouraged to join the Auskick program at any

Stolen car burnt beyond recognition BELGRAVE police are searching for information after a stolen car was found burnt out in the Dandenong Ranges over the weekend. Sergeant Dean Mosdall said that at 8.20pm on Saturday 2 April, emergency services were called out to a car fire at the Mount Dandenong Lookout on Eyre Road. Sgt Mosdall said the car, a white Kia Carnival people mover, was “totally destroyed” by the fire, and was identified as stolen from the Chadstone area. Anyone with information about the fire, or the car, are urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, Belgrave police on 9754 6677 or to submit a

A MOOROOLBARK man will face court this Friday after being arrested and charged for two burglaries from the Lilydale Marketplace shopping centre last week. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Melanie Woods said the 40-year-old man was arrested at 11.30am on Friday 1 April and charged in relation to two burglaries between 19 and 20 March at the shopping centre. He appeared at the Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 1 April, and did not make an application for bail. The man was remanded to appear in court again on Friday 8 April.

Julia Blackburn, Yarra Valley Community Health’s Family health Promotion worker at the time, identified a culture of gender inequality as underpinning violence against women, but, in line with the commission’s recommendation, saw education as a conduit for change. “Violence against women is preventable because it’s a behaviour, not a disease,” she told the Mail. “It’s important to not always focus on the end result (of abuse and violence against women) but to invest in the ‘why’,” she said. A lack of available, safe and affordable housing was another issue identified as critical to empowering women to leave a violent relationship. The Victorian Council of Social Service said at the time that an alarming jump in family violence reflected in police statistics was exacerbated by a lack of housing options for vulnerable women and children. Commissioner Marcia Neave says in the report that the current response to family violence largely assumes that women will leave their home when family violence occurs. “For those who must leave, homelessness and housing systems cannot guarantee a safe place to stay, or a permanent home that is affordable,” she said. “For those who remain at home, monitoring of the perpetrator is inadequate.” The recommended accommodation ‘blitz’ is one of the 227 recommendations that the government has committed to. Signing off on the 2011 campaign, the Mail spoke of the hope that it would not only raise issues that affected so many families in Yarra Ranges but “bring the issue out of the shadows and give victims a voice”. "We hoped also for tangible outcomes," she said. Minister for Prevention of Family Violence Fiona Richardson said on Wednesday that the Royal Commission Report “will change everything”. “We want to create a new system that helps prevent violence and gives victims and survivors the support they need. “We need lasting generational reform that changes attitudes and behaviours,” Ms Richardson said. An independent Family Violence Agency will be set up to hold government to account. The Mail will look at the report in terms of police, courts, services and housing in Yarra Ranges over the next four weeks. Safe Schools a simple life-saver I STRUGGLE to see how the politicians against the Safe Schools program justify their position. Same-sex attracted students are six times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers. We also know that 75 per cent of LGBTI young people are bullied and the vast majority of that bullying occurs in schools. Safe Schools isn’t simply about preventing bullying of LGBTI students though; it also provides an invaluable opportunity to educate all children in our schools about issues faced by LGBTI people and their families. Let’s not forget that the lessons all students learn in school will be taken into their adult life. This debate recently found its way to Belgrave, with an anti-Safe Schools protest staged outside my electoral office. I couldn’t be prouder of the community in the Hills which, in a respectful and colourful way, made it clear that we support Safe Schools - this was also followed up with a fantastic counter-protest the following Saturday.

I thank each and every one of you who came together to stand against intolerance. I am also thrilled that Sherbrooke Community School, Upwey High and Billanook College are already running this important program. The recent controversy around the Safe Schools program has caused significant distress to our LGBTI students, their families and the community. More than 1000 people affected by this ugly debate have written to me and many more are struggling. This vital program has been used as a political football by extreme elements of the Liberal and National parties in Canberra and Victoria to fight their own internal battles.
Unfortunately, neither Malcolm Turnbull nor Matthew Guy have shown any leadership, and vulnerable kids are suffering as a result. Let’s get the facts straight. This program has enjoyed bi-partisan support at state and federal level since 2010. Research showed it was desperately needed and teachers had requested additional expert support to prevent bullying of LGBTI students. Nevertheless, the Turnbull Government buckled to the extreme elements in the Liberal and National parties, and called for an independent review. The review found that Safe Schools’ resources are age-appropriate and consistent with the national curriculum. Despite this, the Prime Minister again succumbed and released a host of recommendations which contradict the findings of his own review. The Andrews Labor Government will continue to fund Safe Schools in Victoria because it makes a real difference to extremely vulnerable kids - Safe Schools saves lives.

has my admiration. One doesn’t need to be an 'activist’ to ask for a school environment where being bullied over your gender isn’t acceptable. Stadium is a shadow THE new 150-seat grandstand being constructed at Morrison Reserve is just a shadow of the original vision, according to former Yarra Ranges mayor Tim Heenan. After Billanook Ward councillor Maria McCarthy last week officially launched the construction stage for the Mount Evelyn development, Mr Heenan said he felt compelled to express his disappointment over what he believed was a missed opportunity. Mr Heenan, who was ousted from council in 2012, said the council should have delivered the project quicker and on a grander scale. “I’ve tried to remain tightlipped about what’s going on, and let the council go about its business, but I had to speak on this issue,” he said. “When I left the council, there was substantial money left aside for this project. “The seating should be three to four times more than 150 seats.” Mr Heenan’s biggest concern, however, was with the proposed shade facilities at the site, which is home to the Yarra Ranges Athletics club and regularly hosts school sports carnivals. “One big square of shade sail (over the stadium) just doesn’t cut it,” he said. “Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world, so we need to put more
dollars towards providing shade. “We’ve got a high obesity rate and need to encourage sports participation in a safe environment.” In reply, Cr McCarthy said the council had achieved more than what was originally planned, saying the design had increased to facilitate wheelchair access for the stadium. “What we have now is a facility that is compliant for national-level events,” Cr McCarthy said. “We’ve worked closely with Yarra Ranges Athletics and the committee of management, and I believe they’re really happy with the outcome.” Cr McCarthy acknowledged the project could have been delivered quicker, saying there were hold-ups. She said the project always had the support of the council. “Initially, there was only a $98,000 budget, but we needed a wheelchair-accessible grandstand so we realised that budget wasn’t going to cut it,” Cr McCarthy said. “The council has supported this project and helped to come up with additional funding.” Yarra Ranges Council has committed $300,000 to the project through its Recreation and Open Space Strategy. Yarra Ranges Athletics coach Brendan Dixon said last week the new grandstand would allow the club to grow further, as well as facilitate
greater participation from regional schools. However, Mr Heenan believed a disservice had been done to the community, saying the site could one day become the pre-eminent sports precinct in the region. “There was always negativity among council over this project, since the beginning,” he said. “With the parking facilities available, it should be much more.” Mr Heenan believes politics may be at play, given 2016 is in an election year. “It’s great to announce these things and say ‘this is great’, but it’s also easy to forget what has gone before,” he said. Cr McCarthy wouldn’t be drawn into those comments. Cr McCarthy also added there was no reason the council couldn’t help further develop the site in the future, if appropriate funding streams became available. This and more should have been done three years ago! 150 seats is a joke. It’s nowhere near enough, but I’m positive Council knows that. I’m sorry, but Maria McCarthy ‘can’t’ take credit for this. This is the truth and ‘I hope’ this post won’t be taken down. Sir Francis Mayson Smith: Would you be kind enough to comment on the whole factual story and cease to be so selective in your reporting please? How much was promised for this facility initially? What balance of monies was
not used after the synthetic track was laid out? What was the residual balance after this initial stage? Why weren’t the original grants for this facility exhausted at the time? Was the original design for a larger pavilion/grandstand? If so, where did the money go? What has Cr McCarthy’s contribution really been? Further to these questions, many people are justifiably wondering why Mount Evelyn is being treated as the ’Cinderella’ township in this Shire due to its lack of capital infrastructure in recent years. We have a struggling Community House. We have nothing to match the community hubs which Monbulk, Kilsyth, Mooroolbark etc. have been invested with.
CARDINIA Shire Council is calling for feedback on its Open Air Burning Policy which effectively sets out the rules for burning off across Cardinia Shire. Introduced two years ago, the purpose of the policy is to ensure that burning off is conducted in a controlled and safe manner and is referenced in Cardinia Shire Council’s local laws. Following the review and consultation that took place in 2015, numerous changes have been made to better reflect the needs of the community. Final feedback on the recent changes is now being sought. Some of the major changes include the removal of three burning off zones and introduction of burn off and no burn off areas using Victorian Government bushfire risk mapping. Simplification of the conditions for burning off such as the amount that can be burnt at any one time, the distance that burning off is required from a building, the days that burning off is permitted and more. Council is proposing to amend Local Law 17 to reflect the changed policy. A copy of proposed Local Law 18 (Open Air Fires amendment) is available on the council website and at council offices along with the policy documents. Feedback closes at 5pm on Tuesday 19 April. Barney over bus shelter By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS TENSIONS between Cardinia Shire Council and Emerald Community House continue over a bus shelter used as a public art space and noticeboard. Following a #letthemstay event hosted by the Emerald Community House and Refugee Council of Australia (RCOA) on 8 February, the bus shelter was decorated with messages of refugee support. The shelter was washed down with pressure washers by Cardinia Shire Council on the mornings of 1, 2 and 3 March, removing all the material posted. Members of the community house re-posted all the materials and subsequent media articles about the shelter, but the council continued to wash the shelter down each time. The last time the shelter was washed down, on 15 March, community house manager Mary Farrow made a complaint to the local police about the material being taken down. “The council never contacted us about the material we had posted and they did it under cover of darkness
night after night,” Ms Farrow said. Cardinia Shire Council have said they do not own the bus shelter but are responsible for the maintenance of it. “The posting of any form of unauthorised notice, flyer or poster in public places, such as bus stops, does contravene Local Law 17 and is considered vandalism,” a statement from Cardinia Shire said. “Council officers have the authority to take action and in this case, remove unauthorised material on a public asset, regardless of the topic.” Ms Farrow believes the bus shelter was targeted due to the political nature of the material that was posted. “We have been decorating this shelter for seven years and this is the first time they showed up unannounced, blasted the shelter with power hoses only because it had refugee material,” she said. Two years ago, Cardinia Shire was recognised by the Refugee Council of Australia as a refugee welcome zone that upholds human rights for refugees. Ms Farrow said Cardinia Council had crossed a line by cleaning away
everything that had been put up in the bus shelter. “We had stuff up there about the McBride Street Kinder and other community information.” “This is a violation of free speech when council assaults this bus shelter for people putting up letters about issues they care about,” Ms Farrow said. Emerald Community House has since started a petition to show community support for the bus shelter to be owned and managed by the community rather than council. The petition currently has 140 signatures but Ms Farrow said the petition was about more than just numbers. “The petition is not about numbers, it’s about the comments we are getting,” she said. “Council has not engaged with the community and they are only listening to a small group who don’t want to support refugees.” Moving the bus shelter into a community owned agreement would see the community house take on responsibility for the management of the shelter.

instead of oppressing them.” Cardinia Shire Council in a statement said council were discussing ongoing arrangements for the bus shelter and a proposal was being explored to retain the existing shelter as a public art piece.

Physios for Olinda are going Dutch PHYSIOTHERAPISTS Mark Lute and Ellen Keijsers, both originally from the Netherlands, have joined Dandenong Ranges Physio in Olinda. Mark and Ellen first visited the area some years ago as tourists and fruit pickers, and after travelling the world decided that the Dandenong Ranges was where they wanted to settle. A skype interview and chance meeting in Bali with now colleague Jerome Higgins, while the couple was living there in 2015 awaiting their Australian professional registration to be approved, sealed the deal for the couple. Besides following post graduate training in rehabilitation and manual therapy, Ellen is also a published researcher currently conducting research in meniscal tears of the knee. Using a variety of treatment techniques like dry needling, manual therapy and exercise therapy, she is passionate about determining the underlying cause of problems rather than just treating symptoms. Ellen enjoys camping, travelling and a variety of sports to keep fit and healthy. Mark’s path after university began as a physiotherapist for the Dutch
Airforce. There, he spent six years specialising further in the musculoskeletal field, concurrently being a tutor at his native university and writing parts for their curriculum concerning biomechanics and training therapy. Since then, he has worked in private practice, treating sports and spinal pain and injuries. Through practising evidencebased physiotherapy and having excellent knowledge of anatomy and biomechanics, he likes to make a difference for his patients. Mark has a keen interest in patients with lower limb, back, neck and shoulder problems and employs dry needling, taping and manual techniques to help solve them. He also utilises the Clinical Pilates studio in Olinda, providing clinical Pilates programs for back pain rehabilitation and general injury or wellbeing maintenance. IT’S time to break out your Hawaiian shirt, dust off your grass skirt and join in the world of all things ukulele. The Dandenong Ranges Ukulele Day on Saturday 16 April is sure to get hearts singing, with the venue for this year the Belgrave-Upwey RSL. The festival line-up features a diverse range of world-class ukulele performers, ukulele groups and workshops. Highlights include Mic Conway’s music, magic and comedy show; Alex Burns’ workshop and performance; and Hills local Matthew Fagan opening the evening show. Fagan, also the festival programmer, has ensured a great program for ukulele-lovers everywhere.
“It’s an opportune time to have the event, coinciding with the inimitable Mic Conway’s tour to Victoria, with the evening concert featuring Mic Conway,” he said. “Mic Conway is very popular as a headline performer with ukulele festivals nationally.” Also performing will be the Emerald Primary School Ukulele Band and KALULU (Kooky and Luscious Ukulele Lovers United), one of the Hills-based ukulele clubs. The school band came into being in 2012 after a term of learning the instruments in class. Some students wanted a forum to use their new skills. SOME of the best beer and cider produced in the Yarra Valley will feature as part of the inaugural Yarra Valley Beer and Cider Festival at Lilydale on Saturday, 9 April. The Rotary Club of Wandin is behind the move to showcase beer and cider as the number of brewers - both in the valley and further afield - grows to meet a growing appreciation and demand for fine boutique varieties. Rotary president, Ray Barrett, said the club is working with passionate community beer and cider lovers to bring the festival to the valley. “We have engaged this group of younger people from a wide range of expertise who have put in a great amount of skills and dedication, working alongside the Rotarians to pull together an event that we believe will be a great success,” Mr Barrett said. Young ace nets national title LILYDALE Squash Club’s Courtney Scholtz has secured her first national title at the 2016 Australian Junior Squash Open in Devonport. With five wins from five matches, Scholtz finished on top of the standings to take out the Girls Under 11s national title on the weekend of 26-27 March. Even after her undefeated run in Tasmania, the rising star, 10, said she had to overcome nerves and tough opposition. “It’s really exciting, I was shocked and I wasn’t expecting it,” she said. “It was tough, there were heaps of really hard matches. “When I was going to play my matches, I couldn’t feel my legs. “There were a lot of people watching, so I just pretended that it was just me and my opponent ... and that helped me.” The youngster had a large group of supporters, some of whom had travelled further than just across Bass Strait. This included her grandparents, who were visiting from South Africa, along with her parents and her coach, Paul Price. Price is a former British Open finalist and world No.4. “I’ve been training with

The Yarra Valley Mountain District Football and Netball League match between the 2015 finalists Kinglake and the undefeated Pride Cup champions, Yarra Glen, will be played at the Yarra Glen Recreation Reserve. Pride Cup celebrates diversity and inclusion in sport for those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI). Now in its third year, the concept recently won a VicHealth award for promoting health through sport and has inspired the St Kilda and Sydney Swans football clubs to start a national Pride Cup. Teams that participate in the Pride Cup receive diversity and inclusion training before the event by Gay and Lesbian Health Victoria, with support from Yarra Ranges Council, AFL and Netball Victoria. A luncheon for league coaches will further spread the message of inclusion with speakers including Victoria’s Gender and Sexuality Commissioner, Rowena Allen; and openly gay Channel Nine News presenter, Peter Hitchener. Pride Cup organiser Jason Ball says the concept and event was important in continuing to spread the importance of diversity and inclusion at grassroots level. “Many young people who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans-

gender or intersex self-select themselves out of sports like AFL and netball because they don’t believe they are supportive or inclusive environments,” he said. “The Pride Cup is not just a show of support for the LGBTI community.
“It is about educating our clubs, our coaches and our players about the diversity and sporting talent that exists in our community. “It is about making sure that our local footy and netball clubs are open for all.”

All April Fools’ jokes had passed, despite some golf that looked a little like there was a certain ridiculous afterglow. John Keys (21) chose the day to shine because the sun wasn’t, when he carded a nett score of 62 to romp home a winner and claim the coveted medal. Captain, Dean Shannon (15), headed up a pretty disappointing and disappointed A Grade when he won by playing to his handicap for a nett 70. Of the great unwashed, it was left to Ken Sumsion (27) to star with a nett 66 and Ian Cranston (23) managed a nett 70 with the rest looking decidedly seedy by comparison. Once again, it was left to John Carvill to be nearest the pin on the 4th, Mike Litchfield the 7th, Dennis Fuller the 12th, Leigh Morison the 13th and Keys rounded out a spanking day by pocketing the pro pin cash on the 18th. There was a stunningly exciting dead heat in the ladies’ event with Brodie Reynolds and Jenny Marsh only just edging out an unlucky Kendra Hill in second place. The seniors’ pennant team hosted Mount Martha last Thursday and having gone down six-zip at Mount Martha were aiming at revenge. They had revenge but just fell over the line 3.5 wins to 2.5. The team now faces Glen Waverley and hope to take a game or two from them to maintain their place at the top of the table. Wednesday’s Omnipotently Forlorn Golf (OFG) was a stableford event. John Keys played a blinder to win with a massive 51 points from Philip Crossley on 44 while Dennis Fuller and Ken Sumsion came in next with 43 points each.

Bank baton passed on INAUGURAL chairman of the Dandenong Ranges Community Bank Peter Marke is retiring after 18 years of leading the community banking enterprise. The company started in 1998, when the Upwey township was left without a bank. In his capacity as chairman of the Upwey Village Consultative Committee, Peter Marke and representatives of the affiliated Traders Association - Tony Thompson and Julie Edwards approached Bendigo Bank to set up a community bank in Upwey. The local community enthusiastically supported this initiative, pledging $212,000. The Upwey Branch opened only six months after the former Commonwealth Bank site closed in March 1998. Only 18 years later, the initiative has been an overwhelming success, with the company expanding to four branches throughout the Dandenongs and with an impressive effort of more than $4.2 million being given back to the local community through grants, sponsorships, scholarships, dividends and pledges to major projects. On show at Burrinja CELEBRATED Dandenong Ranges artist Jenny Saulwick unveiled her latest exhibition at the Burrinja Cultural Centre on Sunday, 3 April. For three decades, the trained sculptor has worked diligently, creating art with local communities. The exhibition presented numerous projects that Ms Saulwick, now in her 80s, has been involved with, and gives great insight into her creative process. Shepparding donations for a wheelie good turn By KATH GANNAWAY JACQUELINE and Greg Sheppard are hoping their 10th Mountain District Car and Bike Show on Sunday 10 April will push their contribution to local organisations to the $100,000 mark. The show which annually sees crowds flock to the Don Road Sporting Complex in Healesville attracts between 500 to 800 cars and bikes.
Driven by the Sheppards’ love of wheels and people, the show has raised $85,000 for local organisations and charities to date. Asked about the highlights, Jacqueline said it was handing over the cheques. “It’s so rewarding just being able to give money back into the community to buy equipment that is desperately
needed, but not government funded,” she said. Groups that have benefited over the years include Healesville Hospital, Scouts and Rotary Club, Bridge Builders in Lilydale and Car26 in Monbulk. There have also been sleeping bags for the homeless, a mattress for a boy with brittle bones disease and a vital signs monitor for the Day Oncology Unit at Lilydale last year.
For the car and bike owners, and the enthusiasts and families who come each year to enjoy the eclectic mix of hot rods, classics and customs, it’s a great day out for a good cause. Jump ‘n’ Jive and The Infernos will be on stage, there will be free entertainment for the kids and a 10th anniversary cake around 1.30pm just before the trophy presentations. While the year-long organisation is
handled primarily by Jacqui and Greg, they rely on volunteers on the day to make the show the success it has become. Late Models speedway entries from all over By KATH GANNAWAY ALEXANDRA Speedway is gearing up for the Victorian State Championship for Late Models on Saturday 9 April. Cars from all over Australia will be represented in the 22-strong field hoping to come away with the Healesville Directional Drilling 2016 Victorian Late Model Championship trophy.
Conducted by Late Model Racing Victoria (LMRV), the competition will see drivers vying for valuable points in the three rounds of heats that will ultimately determine the starting position in the final. LMRV secretary Lisa Edwards said the top eight score qualifiers for the big 30 lap feature would battle it out in a top-eight pole shuffle to determine starting positions in the final. “The pole shuffle will put on some
fast and close quarters racing,” Ms Edwards said. In what is one of the most elite and professional sedan classes in speedway, she said the Victorian drivers would all be keen to have the Victoria #1 within their home state after previous winners hailed from interstate. Eildon brothers Brock and Chevy Edwards and father and son team, Justin and Cameron Pearson from Healesville are among the contend-
ers. “Brock, Chevy and Cameron are the youngest competitors and at 20, 19 and 17 respectively, they are out to have a crack at winning their first Victorian Championship,” Ms Edwards said. She said the Pearson Racing Team was encouraging the locals to get behind them. “It’s not very often Justin and Cameron get to showcase the Late
Models so close to home.” After what promises to be an exciting championship, with machines capable of reaching speeds of up to 160km on the bigger tracks such as Alexandra Speedway, LMRV is inviting fans down to the pits to meet the drivers, look over the cars and get photos of the kids in the cars.
