Mural marks a terror tribute THE devastating terror attacks in Brussels that killed 35 people and injured 300 have sparked a local hostel owner to pay tribute to those affected by the bombings. Global Cafe and Bar owner Danny Simmonds has painted a life-sized mural on the wall of his cafe to show his support for the many European guests who stay at the attached hostel. The mural depicts Maria from the Sound of Music movie in the iconic mountain scene holding two guns and with her face covered by a bandana. “I decided to paint the iconic Sound of Music image as I know most Europeans can relate to it and most of our guests at our backpacker hostel behind the cafe are from Germany and Austria,” he said. Danny said he wanted to depict Europe fighting against terrorism and while he had received positive feedback about the artwork, the image had not been without controversy. Danny said he had been approached by people who are offended by the image and the notion of fighting terrorism with violence, but Danny said “it’s just a painting”. “One out of 50 (people) find it offensive, which makes others angry,” he said. and-neck race for the job with former councillor Sandy Bolton nipping at Cr Wellington’s heels throughout the vote count. Cr Wellington said he was very excited about the opportunity and is committed to working for the best interests of Noosa over the next four

years. “My intentions have always been to ensure Noosa remains the best place on the planet in which to live,” he said. Cr Wellington said Bob Abbot was the “perfect” deputy mayor and congratulated former Noosa mayor Noel Playford on his two-year term, saying he was “absolutely the best

RSL encouragement THE Cooroy RSL has been recognised for its contribution to the community and has been awarded the District Encouragement Award. Welfare officer Don Scott said this isn’t the only award the branch has been presented with. “In addition to this award for outstanding efficiency and commitment to sub branch ideals, our sub branch has also won the District Shield twice in the past,” Mr Scott said. The Cooroy-Pomona Sub Branch is one of more than 40 in the local district of Wide Bay Burnett and boasts more than 20 active volunteers. The club’s main focus is on the exservice community where a wide range of services are provided including social outings, pensions and advocacy assistance, welfare assistance and advice, hospital and nursing home visits and regular telephone contact with those who are isolated, just to name a few. Every month the sub branch puts on something special for ex-service personnel alternating between a Don’s Morning Tea Get Together at the club and a fun bus trip to somewhere interesting. INBRIEF Billion dollar tradie A TEWANTIN tradie who told police he was a billionaire may now face charges of perverting the course of justice after it was alleged he altered his bank account to show a balance of $596 million. Phillip Harrison, 29, was arrested on Friday 25 March in Brisbane when police allegedly found Viagra, $1000 cash and $12,000 worth of ice in the luxury car he was driving. According to media reports, Mr Harrison told Brisbane Magistrates’ Court he was worth $12 billion but has since been accused of using a phone app to alter his bank account statement to show a balance of $596 million. Mr Harrison is currently facing drug charges and is due to reappear in court on 18 April.

Danny originally posted a photo of the artwork on the Sunshine Coast Community Board Facebook page earlier this month and said since then he had been inundated with phone calls about the work and people stopping by to have their photo taken with the mural. “We have received nothing but phone calls regarding the post and have been asked by many not to take it down, with people coming by all day taking pictures of it,” he said. JUST two weeks after local father Stephen Small was struck by a ute while riding his bicycle, another local man has been rushed to hospital after a hit-and-run on Good Friday. Police said a male cyclist aged 60 had been riding solo south on Sunrise Road at Tinbeerwah around 6.30am, near the intersection with Wombat Lane, and had stopped off on the gravel shoulder to adjust his riding gear. The vehicle involved was also travelling south along Sunrise Road and had struck the rider whilst he was stationary on the gravel shoulder. Police allege the vehicle failed to stop and continued south along Sunrise Road. Police recovered a side view mirror which is believed to have broken off on impact. The cyclist involved was unable to supply a full description of the vehicle to police but it is believed to be a
THE Queensland Police Service has thanked Queenslanders for helping to make this Easter the safest on the state’s roads in 20 years. Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Mike Keating said after last year’s tragic holiday period, it was clear that road safety was on everyone’s mind. “Last year we saw the worst Easter on our roads since seasonal records began in 1992,” he said. “Thankfully, this year it’s a different story. “The last time we had no one die on Queensland roads over Easter was in 1996, so in that respect, this year was our best Easter over 20 years.” Noosa Heads officer in charge Acting Senior Sergeant Dean Holmes said there was minimal incidents in the week leading up to and during the Easter long weekend. “We are overall quite happy with the behaviour of the public throughout Easter,” he said. “We carried out over 750 random breath tests and only eight drivers were caught under the influence however one driver blew a reading four times over the legal limit.” Senior Sergeant Dean Holmes said more than 50 tickets were issued for various infringements over the long weekend and that Noosa Heads police would continue their road blitz throughout the holidays.

POLICE are urging locals and tourists to watch their valuables on the beach after three reports of theft were reported last week. Noosa Heads officer in charge acting Senior Sergeant Dean Holmes said beach goers on Noosa Main Beach and Tee Tree had their wallets and phones stolen after leaving their belongings unattended while swimming. “Valuables need to be watched by a friend, left at home or put in a place where the owner can see them at all times,” he said. “It’s up to the person to ensure they keep their belongings secure at all times.”

Dingo dog days By MEGAN OGLE NEW concerns have been raised over the well-being of the Fraser Island dingo population as visitors are expected to flock to the island during the school holidays. On Monday (21 March), a concerned tourist sent photos to Noosa Today of a dingo they said looked to be emaciated, suffering chafing from a “heavy� tracking collar, and laden with an ear tag that could impact its hunting ability. Cheryl Bryant a spokeswoman for advocacy group Save Fraser Island Dingoes said the photos were “sad� and “distressing� and that the condition of the animal indicated how the dingoes on Fraser Island were treated. Ms Bryant said the condition of the dingo was “appalling� and raised concerns about the impact of visitors on the island that had led to dingoes being labelled as aggressive. “Dingoes are not aggressive by nature but are extremely curious and notorious thieves. “It is not unusual for the animals to be attracted to the aroma of cooking food, bait buckets or open eskies,� Ms Bryant said. “This behaviour should not be considered a sign of aggression or treated as an ‘incident’. The term implies the animal is acting out of character, which is not the case.� Ms Bryant said the expected influx of visitors to the Island during the school holiday period could have a damaging impact on the local dingo population. “During the Easter holidays the dingo will again be put under pressure by the enormous influx of tourists. “Over 15,000 vehicle permits were issued for Fraser Island between December and the end of February - an increase of more than 2500 vehicles for the same period the previous year,� she said.

Bolton stays upbeat The male dingo was confirmed dead on Good Friday after being struck by a vehicle on Fraser Island. “Easter is also the commencement of the dingo breeding season. “The chances of a dingo encounter over this holiday period is likely. If tourists abide by the guidelines and do not attempt to interact with or feed the animals, then Easter on Fraser Island can be a positive and safe experience for both tourists and wildlife.� A Queensland Parks and Wildlife Services (QPWS) spokesperson said except for the chafing, the dingo pictured was in “good health�. The spokesperson said the tracking collars are approved for use, are lightweight and are used to track dingoes that have been associated with “high risk� interactions with humans. “(The collars) have been designed specifically for use on dingoes and other mid-sized mammals,� the spokesperson said. “Dingoes on Fraser Island that occupy areas around townships and highuse visitor sites and are frequently interacting with visitors are ear-tagged for identification purposes (and tracking) does not occur on dingoes less than 10kg. “This particular dingo had an ag-
gressive history which is why it was being tracked. “Its interactions with humans had been getting increasingly serious, beginning with loitering in visitor areas and progressing to biting people.� Ms Bryant said she was shocked the rangers had allowed the dingo to get to such a state but the QPWS spokesperson said rangers had intended to recapture the animal and assess the cause of the chafing on its neck. Sadly, both the QPWS and Save The Fraser Island Dingo group confirmed the dingo in the pictures had been killed on Friday 25 March when it was believed to have been hit by a car. “This male dingo died on Good Friday (25 March),� the QPWS spokesperson said. “Preliminary necropsy results confirm the dingo was hit by a vehicle on the beach. Rangers are investigating. The vet report indicated the collar had resulted in minor dermatitis.� Ms Bryant said: “Education, respect and understanding are crucial if we are to preserve and protect the future of the Fraser Island dingo.�

“No doubt each councillor will bring their own wish-list for the next four years,� Cr Wellington said. “I will be sitting down with each of them to talk through those ambitions and see how we can make them a reality.� Cr Wellington said he has a personal list of aims that was “too long to relate here� including introducing sustainability measures into council operations, helping diversify the local economy, and establishing worthy KPIs for the environment and resident wellbeing.
“There are also issues that need to be resolved with the State Government including Noosa River controls and local roadworks including Beckmans Road and the Elm/Myall Street intersection,� he said. “The most important task will be ensuring the new planning scheme incorporates the values that underpin the Noosa lifestyle and reinforces Noosa’s intrinsic approach to development. “The plan must also allow for changes to modern business practices as well as sustainable building design.�

Scout Medallion after long grind AFTER four years of dedicated service, four Cooroy Scouts Johanna Beasley, Jade Clarke, Thomas Haack and Dylan Hafey, have been awarded the Australian Scout Medallion. All Scouts have the opportunity to receive the award, which is an incremented and progressive program that takes four years to complete, but Johanna, Jade, Thomas and Dylan passed the program with “flying colours”. The program is designed to move a Scout from a dependent child to an independent adolescent by completing the Pioneer, Explorer and Adventurer levels. Each level features a different set of basic skills for the Scout to complete such as a leadership course that requires the Scout to organise and independently run an overnight activity and a 30km, three-day unassisted hike. It’s not surprising that not every Scout will complete this exhaustive list of tasks, but Johanna, Jade, Thomas and Dylan passed with flying colours. Scout group leader Sally Clarke said she was excited these Scouts had come so far and was even more excited that three of the four would now be going onto Venturers where a whole new level of adventure awaits. “As the mother of one of the recipients, I know how much work has gone into getting this award,” she said. “The kids have put their heart and soul into it and so have their leaders. It’s no easy feat creating opportunities for these kids to succeed.” Ms Clarke said the activities took time and money, and was thankful to the Cooroy Community Bank

Easter air at Aromas LOCAL diners received an extra special Easter treat on Saturday 26 March when the Noosa Chorale performed an impromptu rendition of the Hallelujah Chorus. Diners at Aromas were lucky enough to be treated to the “flash mob” performance that marked the launch of the Noosa Long Weekend due to kick off on 15 July. Noosa Chorale member Jim Fagan said the Hallelujah Chorus was the perfect choice to celebrate Easter. “Handel’s ‘Messiah’ is a much-loved oratorio and the performance of its Hallelujah Chorus in churches and concert halls in the weeks before Christmas is as traditional as turkey and plum pudding or oysters and prawns, depending on your preference,” he said. “The fact is, however, that George Frideric Handel com-
posed it in 1741 as a lead-up to Easter, so it was appropriate for Noosa Chorale to select it for its ‘flash mob’ outside Aromas cafe in Hasting Street last Saturday morning.” Mr Fagan said the choir had a long-standing association with the Noosa Long Weekend festival and its singers wanted to do something special to help launch the 10day festival. “It was a bit of a shock for coffee drinkers who nearly dropped their cups when soprano Fran Wilson, suitably uniformed as a waitress, burst out with the opening bars of the Hallelujah Chorus,” Mr Fagan said. Ms Wilson was quickly followed by 40 singers from the Chorale who streamed in from Hastings Street or stood up at their tables in the cafe. The Chorale’s first ever flash mob performance was a
great success drawing loud applause from Aromas patrons. Noosa Long Weekend festival director Ian Mackellar said the singers were “brilliant”. “This impromptu performance just adds to the overall sense of excitement and the community spirit of the festival that is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year,” he said. The Long Weekend festival has now officially launched with tickets on sale. The 10-day festival will open with a Carnivale and grand parade down Hastings Street on 15 July followed by 10 days of music, theatre, food and fun entertainment from performers such as Meow Meow, Max Gillies and the Queensland Ballet Company, plus much more. New home for Tewantin RSL THE Tewantin Noosa RSL Sub-Branch is on the move with a new office and extended services opening as of next month. The RSL Sub Branch will officially open the doors to its new office, now located in Pelican Street, Tewantin, and will unveil its new Advocacy and Welfare Centre on Monday 4 April at 4pm. Sub Branch president Graham Pattle said the new office would cater for ex and returned servicemen and women in Tewantin, Noosa and surrounding areas and will provide an ideal and central location for clients.
“The services provided will range from assistance given to serving and ex serving members, by our pension’s officers, assisting with pension claims through the Department of Veterans Affairs,” he said. “Also, a wide variety of welfare services will be provided by our welfare officers.” The sub branch currently has six volunteer welfare officers who provide services to aged and infirm veterans through visits to hospitals and aged care facilities, assisting with emergency accommodation where possible, provision
of transport when needed and other types of assistance. “The welfare officers also maintain and manage the RSL section of the Tewantin Cemetery in agreement with the Noosa Council and provide funeral officers to assist in the funerals of ex serving men and women when requested,” Mr Pattle said. RSL Queensland state secretary and director of welfare services Scott Denner will be the keynote speaker at the opening of the new office and will be accompanied by RSL Sunshine Coast district president Tony Ferris and secretary Kath Barry.

Lions muster funds to help foster care HUNGRY shoppers have helped the Lions Club of Peregian raise $1600 for the Anglicare Foster Care service. The Lions Club of Peregian gave up family time on Easter Saturday (26 March) to hold a fund-raising barbecue out the front of Noosaville Bunnings where shoppers tucked into sausages to help raise the funds. The funds are part of a larger donation given to the organisation at the club’s 22 March meeting held at Coolum Beach Hotel where Anglicare Foster Care services president Bernadette Burns was the guest speaker. Lions Club of Peregian board member Sue Priston said the group were “simply astonished and moved” by Ms Burns’ passion for her role in the organisation and the “overwhelming need for more foster carers in our area”. “Although there is government support, there is always need to support the children, many of whom arrive at Anglicare with nothing,” Ms Priston said. The group also donated $500 worth of store vouchers from the local area plus a basketful of children’s new pyjamas and underwear.

Have your say on Noosa Council’s draft Waste Reduction and Recycling Plan 2016/24. “The draft Waste Reduction and Recycling Plan 2016/24 looks at how we go about reducing the volume of waste we’re producing as a shire, how we increase the amount of waste we’re diverting from landfill, such as by composting and recycling, and how we go about tackling littering and illegal dumping.” Mr Schafer said in some cases the State Government waste diversion targets were already exceeded. “Take construction and demolition waste, for example,

RESIDENTS can have a say on Noosa Council’s draft Waste Reduction and Recycling Plan 2016/24 from 29 March. The plan spells out the council’s waste reduction and recycling priorities for the next eight years, including targets set by the State Government. FORMER Prime Minister Tony Abbott dropped in for a surf last weekend, and it won't surprise me to see Katter party members and former Labor MP Rob Pyne enjoying a coffee in Hastings street as well. The discussion will solely be about the idea of secession for a break away of North Queensland from the rest of the State. Anyone who reckons sport isn’t a major player in the economy is dreaming. All this rhetoric kicked off after the Cowboys victory in last years Grand Final, and there’s even a push for Jonathan Thurston to be the new leader of the North. I only hope new mayor Tony Wellington doesn’t join the chorus trying to add Noosa to the mix. Leading demographer Bernard Salt relating to the North suggests "that it is inevitable within the next few decades due to the anticipated growth in population, diversity and economic power in the region”. Mr Salt is certainly looking into the future, but maybe the Northern State politicians need to work on what is needed today, before waving a magic wand and predicting the future. Mayor Wellington has one chance to get it right, as most know how long it takes to fall out of favour in the political arena. I know I have pushed the 2018 Commonwealth Games wheelbarrow for some time now, and who knows who will be in power after the next state elections. Noosa and the Sunshine Coast leaders, state
and council must stand up and fight for our rights and what’s best for our region. We all know it’s a numbers game, so nows the time to unite, get in the ring and start the fight to achieve good outcomes. One way this can happen, is asking Sandy Bolton to run for state politics, either LNP or Independent. I have no doubt even ardent Wellington supporters would throw their support behind this charming and smart former councillor. On poll day, I handed out vote cards in Mooloolaba and Peregian, and it was like night and day. I couldn’t believe the aggression and angst at Mooloolaba and I believe it was similar at other booths. In contrast, Peregian Community Hall was a pleasure, with all volunteers friendly, helpful and very supportive of each other. I remember mentioning to a few, how strange it will be that in a few months we will all be handing out and supporting the same candidate or party. That is my point, on the big picture issues the Coast is suffering because of the lack of unity. The only reason people voted for Clive Palmer was because most felt he wouldn’t toe the party line, but sadly how right they were. Noosa Springs resident and 1982 Commonwealth Games Head Dan Whitehead remembers only too well how much Brisbane changed after the success of the Games. I plead to Mayors Wellington and Jamison to work together for the benefit of all and use the Games as the catalyst. This is my last column for Noosa Today. I have appreciated the opportunity Star News has given me over the past 12 months, my columns have been a pleasure to share.

Yes, Cooroy’s got talent COOROY’S annual Fusion Festival is just around the corner and is set to be jam packed with fun for the whole family. The festival is to be held on Saturday 7 May with ativities spanning from from the Cooroy Mill Site to the CWA Hall. Cooroy Library programs officer Liz Bleechmore said she was already looking forward to the festival. “Cooroy Fusion Festival is a fantastic day for the town and we are proud to be a part of it,” she said. “We get thousands of people through the doors during the day and every single one of them has a smile on their face.”
New additions to this year’s program include the Ozobot Coding workshops where seven to 10-year-olds can learn fun and simple coding using a miniature robot, the Ozobot. The Noosa Library Service’s NAO robot Dewey will also be a star of the day with a beginner session that will take you through the basics of programming a robot using using Choreographe software. There will be plenty of activities to keep children entertained including the popular allday Lego Lounge and the First Five Forever Story Play area which will hold a range of creative resources for children and parents to discover new ways to
encourage early literacy. Cooroy Fusion showcases local talent - and the Fusion Author Fair in the Library does just that by offering a chance to discover the talented wordsmiths who live in the local area. Books will be for sale, with authors there to sign your copy. Musicians from Music on Mondays will also be in attendance, a popular program that showcases emerging local musicians such as Confusion Says and others. Great bus service WE are Canadians briefly visiting in Peregian Beach. On Good Friday our friends dropped us off in Noosa, advising us that bus travel was free for our return. After enjoying a few hours in beautiful, busy Noosa we went to the bus terminal and noted that 620 was the number of the bus for Peregian. When the 620 arrived, the driver informed us that only buses sporting a yellow banner were free for the Easter weekend. Her bus was not sporting the yellow banner, but when we asked what the fare was, she declined our money, invited us on board, and dropped us at Peregian. Batting on NOW that the dust has settled, and the new Noosa Council is in, Wallace Park residents are a little more hopeful that something will be done about the bats in the park which are now in plague proportions, and causing havoc to residents, to the vegetation and trees in the park, and to wildlife which has been squeezed out of existence. Six would-be candidates approached me about the bats prior to the election and promised to do a range of things to alleviate the situation, even though bats were a missing item from the election agenda. Load of rubbish NOW that the elections are finished we can get back to talking real rubbish! So let’s start with the free papers that we all get tossed onto our property (or on the street, nature margin or nearest ditch). Since the beginning of the year, I do not think I have received above a handful of free papers (and I can get up to four a week) that have been readable. Most have been water damaged due to our weather or ripped or run over by a vehicle, due to the delivery method. As I take my dog for a walk the majority of my neighbours suffer the same fate, and there are those vacant blocks where weeks of papers just pile up, before the message finally sinks in to the distributor, that there is no-one at home! Now do not get me wrong, I like my free paper, I enjoy keeping up with community news, I use local advertised tradesmen and support the restaurants featured, but what a load of rubbish, literally! Just this year to date, I have disposed of 50 papers (including inserted advertising) and 50 plastic bags, that multiplies
to 700 in my street and well over 35,000 just in the area I walk the dog - I shudder to think of the total tonnage for the whole distribution area. Andrew Bell, Doonan. Makes no sense CAN anyone explain to me, the logic behind the current Queensland law which says that councillors who unsuccessfully stand for the position of mayor, cannot be elected back onto the council? Donkey vote ACCORDING to media reports there is obviously something very wrong with the present set-up. Perhaps if we had divisions as in the past this would help. But I think far more serious is the fact that the wrong mayor may have been elected. So many of us were told, including Wellington, according to the media, to just put 1 for the mayor. It does, in my opinion, not matter what has been previously published or what is on the paper, you should just do as the person handing out voting slips says to do. It would be interesting to see how many like myself that voted for Ray Kelly left it to one without any preferential, all as instructed at the voting station. I would suggest a lot, probably the majority, of those would have gone as second choice to Sandy Bolton. Perhaps if Wellington has the guts to resign and much as it would be inconvenient, we had a further election for mayor and see who is the true choice of the people. Kids show class KIDS are encouraged to get creative with after-school art classes set to kick off later this year. Noosa Regional Gallery’s Afterschool Art Classes will introduce students to the rapidly evolving world of ceramics, when the eight-week, term-two program begins in May. Guided by a qualified art professional and developed in line with the current national curriculum, the weekly sessions will explore the latest techniques in contemporary ceramics. Gallery director Nina Shadforth said students would produce art pieces which will feature in a miniexhibition. “Each student will produce two finished works over the course of the program: a fired and painted ceramic piece and an intricately designed, staged and photographed scene of their own creation,� Ms Shadforth said. “The gallery will showcase the works at the end of the term in a pop-up style mini-exhibition, where parents will have the joy of seeing their child’s works in an art gallery.� Noosa Regional Gallery’s Afterschool Art Classes are open to primary school children between six to 12 years old and classes will run from 3.45pm to 5pm, each Thursday, from 1 May until 19 June.

Master Builders deputy executive director Paul Bidwell said progress had been painfully slow and more needed to be done. “We are concerned that builders could be liable for damages, fines or possibly lose their licence if they haven’t taken steps to remediate the faulty cable,” Mr Bidwell said. “Master Builders have recommended to the ACCC that in cases where the builder or electrician is denied access to a house to remove the faulty cable, the contractor should be able to notify the state regulator for action,” Mr Bidwell said.

TWO quite unassuming young lads, both at present on basically the same paths in life; high school and surf lifesaving. The only difference being one is now a member of the club at Heads Noosa and the other Sunshine Beach. Ironically, both of these young men Jasper Outram, aged 16, and Maverick Pettigrove, 15, started their careers as nippers in the club at Sunshine. For Jasper who is now a member of Noosa, life in the nippers started in the U/8s in 2008. However, in 2014 he made the switch to Noosa and obtained his bronze medallion the same year, and on doing so commenced patrolling on Main Beach. Jasper's patrol duties are something of a family affair, as his sister Electra, an SRC member is also on the same patrol and his younger brother Zale is in the U/13 age group of the club. At present, he is a Year 12 student at the Sunshine Beach State High School. “Once I finish high school, I am seriously thinking of going to our local uni to study engineering.” But at present his career in lifesaving is high on his agenda. In the competition arena, the 2015/'16 season has so for been very successful for Jasper. Competing for his club at the recent Queensland Youth Surf Life Saving Championships held at North Burleigh, he came home with a tally of four medals, three gold and one silver. Competing in the U/17 age division, he won gold in the surf race, Cameron relay and his favourite the iron man; the silver was for the board relay. Head coach Darren Mercer said, “Jasper's results have been very good and well deserved. He is a great team member and has worked very hard. With his attitude I think he will go further.” As we talked, it became very obvious that here was a young man with his feet firmly on the ground; someone who thought before he spoke. “I take each day as it comes and concentrate on the day. This is a great club, good mateship, great training sessions and a really good coach.” Another major factor in his success has been the outstanding support of the Masters competitors both male and female. “Always there, always helpful,” he said. Noosa is fortunate in having not only a large contingent of Masters but also veteran members. We look at the names and acknowledge their experience and above all their attitude towards our youth. Members, just to name a few, such as Peter French, Peter Vidler, Steve Freckelton, Ross Fisher, Lenore Grice and the female considered to be the first lady of masters competition in Queensland, Gina Lynch. All our people are only too happy to help and advise the likes of our young Jasper Outram.

Maverick Pettigrove in action. Over the hill at Sunshine Beach Surf Club, Maverick Pettigrove is, at the tender old age of 15 years, also a young clubbie, who despite his youth has already made his mark. A Year 10 student at St Teresa's College, he has not as yet started to concern himself with what lies ahead at the end of his college years. For Maverick his lifesaving career started as an U/7 nipper. On joining the ranks of the U/10s he started what has so far been a very successful and indeed a promising career in the world of competition. At that age when the fun factor was the major element, he threw himself into every event possible; and the foundations for what lay ahead was laid. On reaching 13, he obtained his SRC and two years later his bronze medallion. By this stage he had already established a good reputation as a key competitor especially in team events; and it was in one particular event that he and his teammates created club, and indeed state history. During his U/11 year, Maverick and his mates formed a board relay team. Now five years on, they have won both the branch and state titles for five consecutive years. At the North Burleigh State Titles, he finished with a total of four gold medals; the above mentioned, plus the swim team, board rescue and the Cameron relay. “I really enjoy the team events and have always had the desire to do well in these. Apart from the winning, it also shows great depth in the club,’’ he said, ‘’and this is very important. But I would have to say that my big goal would be to win a gold medal in the Iron Man event at the Aussies; that’s the big one.” Proud dad Max, apart from being a parent, is also, along with Mark Jacobs, affectionately known to all the team as “Chicken Legs,” one of the coaching panel. “By winning for five years in a row, they have really achieved the unbelievable; never been done before.”
Picture: CONTRIBUTED For Maverick a major aspect of his success, and indeed, his attitude has been the support of all his immediate family; mum, dad, brother and sister. Max has become something of a legend among the coaching panel at Sunshine; his success comes as a result of his many years in lifesaving. Starting his career as a junior in Noosa, Max, in December 1985, transferred to Sunshine. In 1998, he started his coaching career with the nippers before moving up into the senior ranks. Experience gained while competing as an elite athlete in the Uncle Tobies and the Nutri Grain Iron Man Series, taught Max not only all aspects of training but also the pitfalls that lay ahead of young competitors. Max, who since 1985 has worked as a professional lifeguard, was in 2013 awarded Life Member of Sunshine Beach for his outstanding contribution to all aspects of club life. As with all young athletes, success for Jasper and Maverick comes only after long training periods in the pool and at the beach. For both lads, it is a total of nine sessions each per week. For Maverick it is three sessions in the pool, five sessions on the board and one iron man; and for Jasper it consists of four sessions in the pool and five sessions at the beach covering both board and ski, with coach Darren Mercer. With so much negative reporting regarding our youth, it is indeed refreshing to move among the likes of our young people such as Jasper and Maverick and learn not only of their success, but also of their relationship with their senior and veteran members. Easter fishing treat for all By JACK MANGROVE IT was an Easter fishing Bonanza. Both the Noosa’s river and offshore reefs have been firing over the past week. Some exceptional weather over the Easter break saw many boats heading out over the bar, and there were some amazing captures. With the sun shining brightly, light wind and moderate swells, the offshore crew have cleaned up. Jew Shoal has been a hot spot for mackerel as well as reef fish like sweet lip and squire. Sunshine reef has also seen some great fish come over the side; spanish and spotted mackerel have been the main targets with small slugs doing most of the damage. Baits on the bottom are getting some nice coral trout and sweet lip. Other anglers headed to North Reef, getting a
great bag including big Spanish, Maori cod and long tail tuna and snapper. Trolled lures are a great way to target Pelagics: the Samaki Pacemakers and the River2sea Turbo 160 are a couple of lures you should take a look at if you are heading offshore. Both these lure can be trolled up to 12 knots and come in a great range of colours. In the river, mangrove jack have been lurking around jetties and rock walls at night and with the steamy weather there has been some goodsized fish caught over the past week. With the amount of prawns in the river, prawn profile lures have been the go, the Squidgies paddle prawn in the 80mm size is a perfect fit, they come in a great range of colours perfect for doing battle with a jack. Trolling deep diving lures around Noosa sound and Weyba creek has also seen some results. Else-
where in the river, flathead has been on the chew with some good catches along the Tewantin ski run and up towards the lakes. Down along Gympie Terrace and Munna Point good-sized bream have also been on the chew, small fish baits like hardy heads and frog mouthed pilchards have claimed some quality fish. The dog beach and Frying Pan continue to produce some quality whiting, live baits like worms and yabbies have got the best results. On the beach, whiting, swallow tail dart, and small tailor have all been inhabiting the gutters. If you are up for a night fish, fillet the sides off a tailor and use as a bait for a large jew, with ganged hooks, heavy sinkers and a little patience you should see a result. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures.

By RON LANE FOR the Impact Boxing Academy of Cooroy the recent Queensland Amateur Boxing Championships held at the Acacica Ridge Hotel, Brisbane, it was its best ever results at a state titles. “We are stoked,” said Impact owner and coach Mark Evans. “We took a team of eight fighters and came home with seven gold medals. To top it off when they named the state team all seven were selected. “This, for us, is a double; all our winners being selected and also it is the biggest number from any one club to be named in a state team.” This team will now go on to represent Queensland at the Australian Championships to be held on the Gold Coast from 11 May until 15 May. Ben Cameron-Hands and Byron McKeown are booked to represent Australia against the Kiwis in New Zealand, and Brock Shelby will also have the honour of representing his country fighting a major international tournament in Poland. This will be contested from 25 May until 11 June. All up it will give Impact fighters four tournaments in four weeks. To say that Mark Evans’s recent trip to Anapa in Russia was controversial would be an understatement. With Mark, to box as part of the Australian team were Sam Cameron-Hands and Bailey Seabourne both from Impact. Sam lost on a split decision to the fighter who went on win the gold medal and Bailey, who handed his opponent something of a boxing lesson, stood stunned when his opponent received the decision. “I wasn’t stunned, I was shattered,” said Mark. “To have one of our team beaten on a split

For both Scotland and Ireland expressed the opinion that, for them, this would probably be their last event. “Years ago it was like the mini Youth World Championships,” they both agreed. “But now, look. It has dropped from almost 100 countries with interest to just 14. It would appear that with this, a new administration, something has gone horribly wrong.” However for Australia it finished on a good note in two areas. Sam Cameron Hands said: “Apart from the tournament we got the chance for a lot of great sparing sessions with some of the best fighters from around the world. Good learning, great experience.” “Add to this,” said Coach Mark Evans, “we received an invitation to send a team to Ireland in September to contest the Celtic Cup, a tournament to be contested in three towns across three provenances. I guess our lads must have impressed the right people.” During a recent trip to Brisbane I had the pleasure of talking with Danny Green former world boxing champion and author of the Coward Punch Campaign. When discussing the program he replied: “It is like the Slip Slop Campaign to block skin cancer. Took off slowly but it is being noticed.” Boxing coaches Mark Evans and Israel Kani have expressed their total support.

A depleted reserve grade team, under the guidance of Phil Amson, fought hard but, unfortunately, recorded a loss while the Premier women let a two goal lead slip to record a 2-2 draw. But delighted head coach Chris Roche was full of praise for the teams which were not only both competing in their first ever games at this level, but were also experiencing their first ever games in their respective teams.
Friday 1 April will see both teams travel to Maroochydore to take on the mighty Maroochydore Swans. The club is commitment to expanding the female form of the game. With the recent success of the Matildas, female football is being taken very seriously, especially with the Matildas qualification for the Rio Olympics. The FFA’s Women’s Football Strategic Plan lays down a framework for national expansion of the women’s game and with more than 100,000 women and girls playing football in Australia it is definitely a growth area. At Noosa there are two new all-girl teams in the U11-12 competition. The opportunity to play in a girls’ only competition has proved very popular and will assist the club in developing a pathway for the progression of

NORTHBOUND over Easter to spend some time with old mate Chris De Aboitiz and partner Anna at his sprawling mountain-top acreage, the Dog House, just outside Agnes Water. I go back a long way with Agnes, even further than Chris. The first time was the most memorable, back in 1978 with the late, great photographer and kneeboarder Peter Crawford. PC and I landed a job for Australian Playboy to cruise the east coast of Australia and discover what had happened to the hippies and New Agers who had drunk the Cool-Aid at Nimbin a few years earlier and set up communes in coastal rainforests and battle-axe hilltop blocks. The magazine provided us with a fully-kitted Kombi van and an expense account and sent us off to get photos of topless chicks with hairy armpits, made legit by some waffle about how they were pioneering the off-the-grid future. We stayed on point for a while, hanging out in Nimbin and Mullum, taking pictures and notes, but then a late season Coral Sea low started drifting into place and we put the story on the backburner and headed for Noosa. I think it must have been guilt that made us press north on the fifth or sixth day of the swell, but then a funny thing happened. The swell kicked again, and after a futile day searching for a commune near Childers, we took the long dirt road from Miriam Vale to the coast at Agnes Water. I knew very little about Agnes but PC had it on the super secret surfer grapevine that there was a
Our mountain-top home for Easter. little known righthand point there that worked in similar conditions to Noosa. His information was right. We made our way past a general store and a dozen or so holiday houses and parked on a ridge behind a row of tiny fishing shacks. In between the shacks we could catch glimpses of a head-high right running down the point, with no-one on it! It turned out to be a little bigger than that, with a fast outside section behind the rocks, and we surfed our brains out for three days, sometimes sharing with a few friendly locals, often on our own. We rented one of the fishing

shacks for two bucks a night, a double bunk with blankets and a twoburner stove and strolling peacocks on our front lawn every sunup and sunset. I don’t think we even explored the glorious sand cays of 1770 just up the road. We just surfed! Agnes was a kind of paradise, and yet it took me a decade to get back there. This time we camped on the waterfront at 1770 with the kids and I paddled my board out into the bay to buy prawns off the fishing boats more often than I paddled out at Agnes. The surf was mostly disappointing, and when it wasn’t, it was crowded.
Since he bought his hilltop four years ago, Chris has frequently invited us to come and check it out, and when he suggested it again over a beer at Cafe Le Monde after “Super Sunday” - when Chris and his pack of surfing dogs drew the biggest crowd we’ve ever seen at the Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing - I thought why not? So here we are at the Dog House, camped out in the huge motorhome that Chris and Anna have used this summer to spread the gospel of doggie surfing from Port Douglas to Bells Beach, and back to Noosa. Along the way, coverage of their tour broke records all over social media, culminating in a video news re-
lease of the VetshopAustralia Surfing Dogs at the Noosa festival that was seen by millions on network television around the world. But that was a fortnight ago, and now Chris and Anna are back at the Dog House, taking care of Lani and Rama and half a dozen other beautiful dogs that no-one else wanted, working on new media projects with photographer and videographer Peter Aitcheson, and taking care of business - which here at Agnes includes running a stand up paddle school and hire concession at 1770, and offering dog-friendly holiday accommodation. Chris is full of enthusiasm (as he always is) and ideas for the property’s future, which include barramundi-stocked dams, horse-riding trails, terraces of discreet wilderness cabins, bike trails and dog training facilities. He says it’s a 10-year plan and in the quarter of a century I’ve known him, I don’t remember anything keeping his attention for that long. But Dog House might be different. Here he is combining two great passions in his life - the ocean and dogs - in an environment that’s perfect for both. It’s a simple equation: you teach a dog to surf, you can teach it anything. And owners can learn a lot too, about patience, understanding and sharing good times with their fourlegged friends. It’s been a fun Easter. I’m happy to see my friend so happy, and looking at the 360-degree panorama of ocean and mountain from the summit of Dog House, how could you not be? By TONY FROST SIXTEEN Noosa Masters Swimming Club swimmers travelled to the Miami Aquatic Centre on the Gold Coast for the Queensland Masters Swimming Championships conducted over three days from 11 to 13 March. An outstanding performance by Stephanie competing in the female 60-64 years, setting national records in the 200 metres freestyle (2:38.80) and 1500 metres freestyle (21:59.02) plus a state record in the 400 metres freestyle event. Multi skilled Rita Montague, Jan Croft, Ian Tucker, Rob Jolly, Greg Bott, Sam Penny, Brian Hoepper and Helen Malar all gained medals for different styles. Backstroke specialist Bob Morse displayed a clean pair of heels in his four contested individual backstroke events. Three mighty efforts by Jacky Shields who came away with three “filthy fourths" in 50-metres breaststroke, 400 and 1500 metres freestyle. GOOD Easter crowds, and all well behaved. It is interesting to note that despite the large increase in visitation to our three beaches our red and yellow armies are still coping - beach patrols and courtesy IRB patrols are doing a great job. With crowds on the increase, so too unfortunately is the number of spinal injuries being treated. As this is one of the worst possible injuries that can occur at our beach. Patrol captains from all our beaches are calling on beach-goers to take care regarding sea conditions and always remember the golden rule - it doesn’t have to be big surf to be dangerous. On Friday morning life savers attended to a man in his mid-seventies seen laying on the middle of Noosas second beach – an unpatrolled area. On arrival there was no breathing no pulse and the patient was unconscious. Life savers immediately commenced normal procedure and paramedics were notified. Life savers continued CPR until they arrived, then both teams worked in conjunction until paramedics decided that his removal to hospital was possible. Apart from this incident, two suspected spinal injuries were attended to and two dislocated shoulders were also treated. On Saturday morning 2 April, at 9am, the Noosa Seahorses Nippers will again get under way at Noosa’s Main Beach. For new arrivals in our community, this is the Nipper club that caters for our young children with special needs. People wanting more information are cordially invited to be at the Noosa clubhouse, about 8.30am on Saturday. Three weeks ago the organisers of the Noosa Seahorses Nippers travelled to the Alexandra Headlands club to help conduct their first ever Seahorse program. The break between 9 April and 23 April comes about because the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships, during that period, will be held on the Sunshine Coast. With so much on the drawing board regarding the future of the Seahorse Nippers, the good news is that the organisers are in the process of planning a combined Think Tank between clubs from Queensland and NSW. Key administrators from both state governing bodies will be in attendance.

A possible date of 30 April, from noon to 4pm, is being considered – the conference centre will be the committee room of the Surf Club. Some years ago when the Noosa senior club was contemplating the move from the world of chook raffles into big business, a similar conference was organised and held – it was a great success. This is good planning for a worthy cause. Let’s all work together and give whatever support we can. This weekend a combined bronze squad made up of bronzies from Sunshine and Noosa will graduate and be presented with their first patrol caps. Regarding these joint training programs Sunshine Beach club captain Scott Summers said: “This is a fantastic concept with our two clubs training together and getting to know each other. Congratulations to all the trainers; they do a great job. Let’s keep it going”.
