NEW crime figures have revealed 10-year-olds are among the culprits committing violent and brazen home invasions throughout Casey and affluent inner city suburbs.

For more than eight months, sleeping families have been falling victim to baby-faced thieves.

Statistics paint a shocking spike in teen and tween acts of theft, assault and burglary across the south-east.

Last year’s figures reveal offenders aged 10 to 14 committed more than double the number of burglaries and break-ins, compared to 2014.

Youth and adult counsellor at Merinda Park Learning and Community Centre, Emma, said she couldn’t put the surge in crime down to one thing.

“The sense of disengagement that youth feel can lead to behaviours that might seem bizarre, but make perfect sense to them in that moment,” Emma said.

“It comes down to the context that they are living in, such as family breakdown.

“They may have experienced poverty or exposure to violence and crime, social isolation and poor relationships with significant adults or may not feel engaged with different institutions.”

The alarming increase in crime in primary aged students and tweens has been well documented in recent months, as Dandenong’s Apex Gang made headlines at Moomba after they were embroiled in a brawl in Melbourne’s CBD. Several arrests followed the incident, but local police continue to battle the youth crime epidemic in the south east.

According to the latest Crime Statistics Agency figures, offences committed by 10 to 14-year-olds jumped from 101 to 167 in Greater Dandenong last year - a 66 per cent rise.

en partly attributed the 18 per cent rise in offences in Dandenong by 10 to 19-year-olds to the car-thieving Apex Gang.

“But it is not necessarily all to do with that particular young group,” Insp Kitchen said.

“The real concern is if the homeowner goes downstairs to get a drink of water and is confronted by (burglars), then anything can happen.”

Insp Kitchen pointed to the “ice epidemic” and more “kids” wandering at night to the spike in thefts.

“Ice remains a problem for us,” he

said.

Casey home invasions committed by youths aged 15 to 19 was also up 24 per cent in 2015 compared to the previous year and Detective Sergeant Ivan Bobetic, from the Dandenong Embona Taskforce said such offences had been ongoing for two years.

“The level of violence and lack of contrition is alarming for their ages it seems they have no concept of what they are doing, conscience for the victims or they simply don’t care,” Det Sgt Bobetic said.

them if their future looks bleak, or if they’re not doing well at school, they choose to find a different way to attain these things which can lead to crime.”

“Crime is presented in the media constantly and in some cases they don’t get a jail sentence or any form of penalty. So the excessive reporting of the crimes and poor outcomes are presented as an opportunity - when the ways are blocked for your future, you start narrowing that pathway.”

But a positive Emma said the stats meant one thing: “We need to be more pro-active to help youth make better decisions.”

Dancing for inclusion

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH LIVING with a disability hasn’t stopped 40 young people dancing their way to confidence.

This year’s All Abilities Dance Program, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Casey and Casey Council’s MetroAccess program has provided eight weeks of dance classes for people of all abilities.

Participants tried their hand at hip-hop, line dancing, ballroom and Bollywood and will perform at the Rotary Club of Casey Presentation Ball for People of All Abilities on Saturday 20 August.

Sue Wood from the Casey Council said the classes had been a great success.

“Each week 40 people attended and it was obvious at the end of the term participants had increased their confidence in a social environment, made new friends and learnt new skills, while at the same time having lots of fun,” she said.

Stripper stalker guilty

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A KITTENS bouncer was placed on a two-year community-based order after pleading guilty to stalking and threatening a stripper by pressing an illegal handgun against her face in Hallam.

Patrick Iaulualo, 21, of Hampton Park, had initially denied the 19-yearold victim’s claims they had a brief affair and that after its demise he stalked, threatened and pulled a gun on her in his car on Australia Day night.

From the start, he admitted to police to owning the unregistered .22 calibre gun and 150 rounds of matching am-

munition found in his car’s back seat.

Iaulualo told police he was armed out of fear of outlaw motorcycle gang members after shots were fired at his South Melbourne workplace in November.

According to police, the married father-of-two phoned the alleged victim, then visited her at a Hallam house on 26 January.

CCTV footage showed Iaulualo driving up and down the street several times before visiting the former work colleague.

The victim agreed to speak in Iaulualo’s car, where he allegedly pulled the gun

and placed the barrel against her face.

He pressed a button and activated a red laser on the weapon, the victim told police.

At that stage, the victim allegedly feared she would be shot and begged to go home.

Fifteen minutes later, Iaulualo followed the victim’s car.

During the drive, he rang to say: “I feel like I’m letting you go too easy“, the court heard.

He allegedly instructed her to pull into a servo or he’d shoot her tyres.

CCTV footage showed the accused approach the victim’s car and sit in the

passenger seat.

Iaulualo was later seen pacing up and down as he was locked out of the service station, the court was told.

The following day, police intercepted Iaulualo in his car with the loaded gun and ammunition.

Defence lawyer Roona Nida told the court that Iaulualo had been attacked in custody by prisoners with bikie gang links on 19 March.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen took into account a favourable psycholgical report that noted Iaulualo’s remorse and insight. It stated the accused was at low risk of re-offending.

Mr Vandersteen told Iaulualo he had been “naive“ and “out of his depth“ at Kittens. Instead he should focus on the strong support from family and friends, including his wife.

“I can’t see you using that gun.

“You’ve drifted. And drifted in a big way in the last few months.“ He jailed Iaulualo for 57 days which had already been served in remand - on top of the supervised corrections order.

The accused was warned that if he breached the order - or the intervention order protecting the victim - he would face a substantial jail term.

That’s the question the fresh-faced Cardinia Shire and City of Casey tourism advisory committee is trying to work out in a bid to boost tourism in the south-east region.

A local trailblazer in the field, Michael Johnson owner of Moonlit Sanctuary Wildlife Conservation Park in Pearcedale, says there’s a lot to gain from an emphasis on local tourism.

“It’s about making use of the constant traffic passing through the region to the Mornington Peninsula, Phillip Island and on the Sydney-Melbourne route, and enticing them to stop and spend money here,” Mr Johnson said.

“The friends and relative market is very big in Casey. Because we are so multicultural we get families coming from overseas to visit their relatives here.”

Mr Johnson first initiated the tourism conversation with former Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon about three years ago and is thrilled to see the neighbouring councils merge to tackle tourism.

“Tourism in Casey hasn’t been consistently attacked,” he said.

“Tourism is a long-term process, it doesn’t just land on your doorstep, it takes several years to build up an identity.”

Mr Johnson said this year the committee would be focused on developing a marketing strategy for the entire region.

“I think tourism is undervalued as an economic activity, tourism is a very valuable builder of local jobs and entry level and senior positions.

“And just ask the fish and chip shop owner, he’ll tell you about the customers he gets while passing his door after visiting another attraction. Tourism brings people into the region.”

But according to Mr Johnson, the tourism pull has to have several strings to its bow.

A SPIKE in snatch-and-run crooks has prompted Narre Warren police to warn Casey residents of the dangers surrounding selling goods online.

Detective Senior Sergeant Rob Clark said there’s a resurgence of scammers in Casey and they’re targeting mobile phones.

“It’s been occurring quite frequently in Casey and we are warning all sellers to be vigilant,” he said.

The setup starts online when the offender offers to buy the mobile phone, knowing they will snatch the phone and run without paying.

“They arrange to meet victims at unusual locations, car parks at McDonald's and use a stolen phone with a different number to communicate before the robbery,” Det Sgt Clark said.

“If selling goods online be careful, look out for suspicious behaviour.”

RAMPED up Easter policing activity in Casey allegedly caught a Cranbourne man driving on drugs.

Just after 1.30pm on Easter Sunday, Cardinia Highway Patrol members responded to reports of erratic driving on the Princes Highway.

A 22-year-old Cranbourne North man was tracked down and given an oral fluid test (OFT) which returned a positive reading for methamphetamine.

Kids reserve eggs STUDENTS big and small from across Casey enjoyed some Easter fun in their classrooms and at the Melbourne Easter Show.

Cranbourne West Primary School and Rangebank Preschool celebrated with egg hunts and a bonnet parade before the bunny dropped in, while thousands enjoyed the festival atmosphere at Lawson Poole Reserve.

CRANBOURNE West Primary School was transformed into an old-fashioned country show on Wednesday.

Hundreds flocked to the show gates to experience the fun, which included a bake-off, talent and art show and activity stalls galore.

The whole school event taught students the value of money as each competition, demonstration and stall was paid for with tokens.

The school’s Debbie Dodd said the money exchanged for tokens used by the students raised $6000 and would be spent by teachers.

“Last year teachers spent it on things like furniture and maths resources and this year they will be able to spend about $1000 each,” Ms Dodd said.

It was the third year the school had celebrated the community fun day and Ms Dodd said it was getting better with age.

“We had students baking, building gardens in pots and drawing portraits of our school principal they call Mr B,” she said.

“The day is about real life learning and it teaches the students about spending money and what people are willing to pay for something.”

New zone for top cop

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD OVER a near three-decade long policing career, Paul Breen has had a number of highlights.

But as he wraps up his role as Casey's police Inspector after two years, the seasoned officer said it had been the most “enjoyable role I’ve had”.

“I’m lucky enough to lead, in my view, the most energetic and professional work force that I’ve been involved with in in my time as a police officer,” he said.

“There is strong morale in a super busy environment.

“And I’m also lucky enough to be supported by six very competent senior sergeants.

“I couldn’t praise my senior sergeants and the sergeants enough.

“They’ve been quite outstanding.”

Insp Breen is moving into a new role with Victoria Police as the Investigation and Response Inspector for Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia.

And he’s very happy he’ll still be able to keep an “eye on crime” in Casey.

If Insp Breen leaves behind any legacy after finishing up next month, the 29-year police veteran said he’d like to think it’s the strong partnerships and links he has built up with Casey’s wide-ranging community groups.

“By doing that we’ve made them aware of the issues at hand and they’re made aware of the issues that we’re dealing with,” Insp Breen said.

“There’s been some terrific partnership building.

“What I found here in Casey, what I learnt very early on, was

“Those types of community groups really inspire me.”

This isn’t the only legacy he’s leaving behind in Casey.

Insp Breen has been pivotal in setting up several police-led initiatives such as the ‘Chatting with Casey Cops’ local radio program, while he was also heavily involved alongside Casey council in pushing for extra safety precautions at Lysterfield Lake where there have been three drowning deaths since

July 2000, according to Life Saving Victoria.

His continual support of the City of Casey saw Insp Breen receive many plaudits from a number of councillors during last week’s public meeting.

Insp Breen came over to Casey after serving as Local Area Commander for the Port Phillip region, a role that saw him based in St Kilda.

He said Port Phillip had its own challenges, its own “edginess” as a result of street prostitution and alcohol-fuelled crime, which put him in good stead when he walked in as the Local Area Commander for Casey, which has its own unique challenges.

It’s well-publicised that the City of Casey consistently has the highest family violence statistics in the state, while Insp Breen said the reality of having only one major arterial road - the Monash Freeway - results in road safety and road trauma being significant issues.

“In Casey the biggest challenge is how do we deal with such a vastly growing population in an enormous area?” Insp Breen said.

“And we’ve got to be so efficient and smart with our tasking.

“The challenge has been to really make strong inroads on reducing family violence and having a very strong effect on recidivist offenders.”

While Insp Breen is sad to be leaving his position at Casey, he’s excited to be once again stepping outside his comfort zone.

After all, he did exactly that two years ago and it brought him to Casey.

“It’s been a place where I’ve really enjoyed coming to work every day,” Insp Breen said.

Police were eyewitnesses to high-speed car accident

By ANEEKA SIMONIS AN ALLEGED drug-driver from Berwick ran up the back of a car at high speed in Clyde, sending it spinning out of control before slamming into a lamp post, in a night-time collision under police investigation.

The 21-year-old Berwick man was reportedly behaving erratically when police arrived at the scene of the crash, on Clyde Fiveways Road near Ballarto Road, after 9.30pm on Sunday 27 March.

The probationary driver undertook drug and alcohol test at the scene before being transferred to hospital, though he was not admitted.

The smash victim, a 39-year-old Mount Martha woman, was admitted to Dandenong Hospital with serious facial injuries.

The crash was witnessed by police travelling in an unmarked police vehicle in the opposite direction.

The driver was detected travelling about 110km/h in the 80km/h zone, alleged Pakenham police Senior Sergeant Graeme Stanley.

He said it was unclear whether the alleged drugged speedster noticed police turn to follow him, however soon after police began trailing the car the driver smashed into the back of the motorists’ car sending it spinning across the road, and then slammed into the lamp post.

The man was accompanied to hospital by police who charged him on summons.

Police are awaiting the results of the drug and blood alcohol tests however the offending driver allegedly made admissions to using drugs before getting behind the wheel, according to Sen Sgt Stanley, who described his behaviour as “erratic”.

Police were about a kilometre behind the man’s car when the collision occurred.

WHY, for the life of me, are we still encouraging alcohol distributers the right to advertise their products when we know that excessive alcohol consumption will result in carnage and social ills.

It is a well-established fact that excessive alcohol consumption leads also to mental dysfunction The Federal Government can address this issue by legislating to restrict alcohol advertising and the alcoholic industry can do lot more to encourage further self-regulation.

A WOMAN left an unusual calling card for her ex-husband, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard.

Having tracked the ex down to his new girlfriend’s home, the woman left the following in the letter box - chewing gum, gamblers’ literature and a torn portion of their marriage certificate.

She was clearly in breach of a full intervention order. To make matters worse, she gave police doctored documents to try to show she was in hospital at the time.

The judge took into account the woman’s list of physical ailments and fined her $2400 - mainly for producing the false documents.

His car was impounded.

“These tools are being stolen from vehicles parked in both residential streets and at work sites.

“Having tools stolen can be both costly and an interruption to business so it’s important to store tools securely when they are not in use.”

Casey police have also thrown their support behind a new video campaign calling on the community to lock their cars.

Stole from our sick kids “The Narre Warren police and the Melbourne Easter Show have been very supportive in trying to recover the money that was stolen, and we’re thankful for their efforts.”

The money donated to the piggy bank appeal is used to support children with lifethreatening conditions and their families by providing free access to Victoria’s only children’s hospice and end-of-life care.

The piggy bank appeal assists VSK in raising $5 million annually to keep their hospice and support services open.

THE excitement of the Melbourne Easter Show was soured when donated money meant for sick kids was stolen from ‘Pete’ the piggy bank at the Cranbourne show grounds.

Children’s hospice charity, Very Special Kids (VSK), had giant Pete on show over the Easter long weekend to raise money for their annual piggy bank appeal.

VSK community fund-raising manager Addy Wetzler said the theft was “very disappointing”.

“This is the first time one of our giant piggy banks has been broken into and the theft was discovered by two VSK volunteers,” Mr Wetzler said.

Those volunteers were Jenn and Duarte Da Costa, whose daughter died at a VSK hospice in 2013, at just three years old.

Detective Senior Sergeant Rob Clark said a small amount of cash was taken from the iconic pig between 4.30pm on Saturday 26 March and 10.30am the following day.

“The pigs lock was forced open,” he said.

The heartless theft came at a time of grieving for the Duarte Da Costa family, Mr Wetzler said.

“Easter weekend was the anniversary of their daughter’s death, and they are active volunteers and continue to be supported by Very Special Kids through our bereavement program.”

The Cranbourne inspiration is blind in her right eye and has eight per cent vision in her left eye.

But when the minister from the High Street Uniting Church in Frankston suggested taking something up instead of giving something up for lent, Glenise and friend Valmai decided to get arty.

“We’ve been going for three years now, I have three artists that I help, two of which are vision impaired,” class facilitator Valmai Scully said.

Both students from Cranbourne, Glenise and blind friend Bev East, never thought their art would take out an award.

“Their Anzac poppy’s won first prize at the Royal Melbourne Show in the vision-impaired section,” a proud Valmai said.

But the win didn’t come easy. It was through out of the box thinking, Valmai said.

“We find other means of doing things, we use stencils and shapes; Glenise finished a painting of a vase of flowers using cookie cutters,” she said.

The 64-year-old artist said she had never been artistically inclined, saying “I couldn’t

“But just because we can’t see doesn’t mean we can’t dopeople get a shock when I tell them I paint, but one advantage of being blind is I can’t see the mess I make!” Glenise said, laughing.

“If I never lost my sight I would never have dabbled in art, I’m very proud of myself.”

After losing her sight 10 years ago to optic neuritis, Glenise said it was the birds that helped her through the tough transition.

“People say all the other senses just take over when

you're blind, but they don’t, you have to be trained to use them,” Glenise said.

“When I first lost my sight in hospital, I was having a big sook, and then I noticed I could hear the lorikeets out the window, and I thought, I wonder what else I can hear.”

In the past 10 years, Glensie has had numerous hobbies, including tandem cycling and rowing and is now an awardwinning artist.

“A couple of people have told me I’m an inspiration, but I’m not trying to be that, I’m just trying to get on with life,” she said.

1. What is something people don’t know about you?

Most people wouldn’t know that I used to volunteer with the Casey Cardinia Community Legal Service, working with solicitors at the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court to help secure intervention orders for families at risk of domestic violence.

2. What was your most memorable moment?

My most memorable moment is arriving in Australia with my family when we moved to Melbourne from Poland in March, 1992.

Although I was only 6 years old, it still sticks out clearly in my mind and my first impressions were that it was a very hot and tropical place in comparison to the European winter we just left.

3. What would your last meal be?

It would definitely have to be a jumbo sized pepperoni pizza with extra pepperoni and garlic. Plus some Coca-

Cola to wash it down with.

4. What event, past, present or future, would you like to witness?

It would have to be the fall of the Berlin Wall, I was 4 years old when it occurred and don’t really remember it unfolding on television but it was definitely a historic and defining moment for the world marking the end of communism and the Cold War. 5. What is your favourite television show?

This is a hard one to answer! I would have to say I have two favourites, the first being ‘The West Wing’ with Martin Sheen which has unfortunately concluded; so my current favourite is hands down the ‘Game of Thrones’ series.

6. What is your favourite book?

Another hard question, but in terms of captivating my imagination I would have to say the Harry Potter

series by J.K. Rowling.

7. What six guests, dead or alive, would you invite to a dinner party?

John Howard, John F. Kennedy, Mikhail Gorbachev, Malcolm Turnbull, Matthew Guy, and Steve Bracks. I would love to see how they all interact and what they would have to say.

8. What has been your most embarrassing moment?

During a visit to the Daintree National Park whilst on holidays I decided to venture out on some boulders in the middle of an ice cold mountain river, at which point I slipped and fell into the river emerging to the laughter of all the tourists present.

9. What era would you like to live in?

I think it would have to be in the sixties, it was a wild time of personal and political liberation for many people around the world. I would love to have experienced those times first hand.

10. What was your first or best concert?

My first and only concert was by Depeche Mode, an English electronic band formed in 1980. I saw it in Prague whilst in the Czech Republic and the atmosphere was amazing, my favourite song was ‘Just Can’t Get Enough’.

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH HILLCREST Christian College students are heating it up in the kitchen for local homeless people.

VCE and Community Service co-ordinator Paul Schnabel said the school took on a different inspiring theme each year, and 2016 had embraced the word ‘pursuit’.

“As the year has unfolded, we have been looking at ways our college can pursue various endeavours so we can develop and grow as a college and community,” Mr Schnabel said.

“Being a Christ-focused school, we have always tried to look for ways to embrace our community and support them where we can. We also want to teach our students to be caring, generous and compassionate towards others.”

And with a fresh food technology centre, the college has decided to pursue cooking in aid of hungry locals.

“We have a fully operational commercial kitchen which is a great training ground for those students who wish to enter the food and hospitality industry,” Mr Schnabel said.

The school’s cooking for the homeless program works off voluntary students donating hours each fortnight.

Mr Schnabel said the college had partnered with Peninsula City Church, “who collect the meals made by the students and distribute them.”

“The students have been enthusiastic and have really enjoyed participating in the program.

“They have a real sense of reaching out and helping those in need.”

By CASEY NEILL FROM Australia’s first home-made Holden to its last, the Dandenong Valley All Holden Street Car Show will have it all.

The eighth annual Rotary Club of Endeavour Hills event will roll into Dandenong on Sunday 3 April.

The inaugural event attracted 40 cars and brought in $2000.

The number of cars on show had last year grown to about 500, with entries pouring in from across Victoria and interstate, and fund-raising topped $24,000.

A 1948 FX Holden - the first of the

make manufactured in Australia - will this year be on display alongside one of the last Australian-built Commodores.

There’ll be entertainment, kids’ activities, a Rotary barbecue and other food vendors, a performance from band The Infernos and a visit from Melbourne Transformers.

Judging will this year include an extra category, Built by Holden but not a Holden, to cover Chevs and Buicks that had Australian-built bodies by what was then Holden’s Motor Body Builders Ltd which started in 1919.

It will be among 50 trophies awarded on the day for Holdens ranging from im-

maculate original to highly modified.

Money raised will support community programs including Hand Brake Turn, Casey North Community Centre, Big Brother Big Sister, Operation Newstart Dandenong and Casey, Teenage Road Accident Group (TRAG), Life Education and Livvi’s Place at Marriott Waters.

The show will be held at Greaves Reserve, Bennet Street, Dandenong, from 9am to 3pm.

Entry is $5 for adults and free for children aged under 16.

Slime Cup NICKELODEON Australia is turning up the slime-o-meter and bringing its new adventure series Slime Cup to Narre Warren. The slimey event is open to youths aged nine to 13. Keenan’s jumping for joy

By JARROD POTTER CRANBOURNE’S jumping for joy on the back of little athletics success for Keenan O’Hanlon.

The Meteorites’ marvel has been part of the club for many years, but his biggest impact has come recently as he made the decision to focus on his field events.

With his eye set on triple jump and long jump success, O’Hanlon, 13, from Cranbourne, has been in in the midst of a golden summer after multiple wins at the Little Athletics Victoria State Track and Field Championships last week.

He flew through the air on his home track at Casey Fields to claim the Under 13 boys triple jump before a nail-biting showdown in the long jump saw him take a one centimetre triumph.

“I just felt pretty good anyway to win a gold medal but it’s pretty awesome to travel 10 minutes and get this so it’s pretty cool,” O’Hanlon said. “In the triple jump it was pretty close - I won by one centimetre, I got 11.76 and the other guy got 11.75.

“In long jump I was coming second the whole way and on the last jump the wind picked up and I just went with it and got me into first.”

It comes on the back of his state title win at the Athletics Victoria Junior Track and Field Championships in February, defeating a few older and stronger opponents to earn his first gold of the summer and a ticket to Perth for the nationals.

“I won state there and went to Perth for nationals and finished fifth in under15s so I was pretty happy with that,” O’Hanlon said. “It wasn’t an age group

above (for state) but I was one of the youngest there - so to do alright there was pretty good.”

He’s off to Adelaide for the Little Athletics Australia championships soon and believes he’s a chance to add another medal to the ever-burgeoning trophy cabinet.

It comes down to focus and discipline for the young athlete who has finally devoted his training attention to his best events, with the results of that hard work evident for all to see.

“I’ve been doing them for a long time, but I haven’t really trained on them,” O’Hanlon said. “But now I’ve started training on them and it’s good to be getting up to these levels.”

He wanted to thank his parents and the centre for their support.

Stingrays savour maiden victory

By JARROD POTTER YOUTH GIRLS ACADEMY CHALLENGE REVIEW - GRAND FINAL IN A grand final that had it all, to the Dandenong Stingrays Youth Girls went the spoils of summertime success.

Dandenong went into the final Youth Girls Challenge clash of 2016 well-placed but slight underdogs against the undefeated Sandringham Dragons. It took everything they had just to make the grand final, after the Stingrays dug deep to take a come-from-behind semi-final triumph over Calder.

But this week the tables were turned; from the first bounce Dandenong surged in front and held on all day to bring the first football flag back to Shepley Oval since the old Dandy Redlegs days.

Led from the front by a full-ground performance off skipper Georgia Walker, who starred through the centre before shifting to centre-half-back for the final term to man the dangerous Dragons’ forwards, Dandenong had stellar contributions across the lines.

Three quick Stingrays’ goals in the first term left the Dragons chasing all day as Tyla Hanks, Imani Francis and Brooke Struylaart sunk the slipper into a few choice majors.

Forward pressure proved critical; Dandenong’s tackling across the board left the Dragons unable to escape their defensive end. Hanks, Jas Grierson, and many others rode the Dragons into the ground time and time again.

Kayla Ripari, Georgia Gee and Teagan Sheldon went in hard at every ball while Emily Browning, Suede Croad and Jess Provan provided huge run-and-carry across the flanks and beyond.

But it would be hard to single out any Stingray who didn’t do her job when called upon as Dandenong had answers for everything Sandringham threw down.

Dandenong set up the victory in the first half - booting most of its score with the first-term wind.

The Rays went into the half with a 22-point lead and didn’t kick a goal afterwards, by then the damage was done.

Sandringham toiled to keep the game moving, but couldn’t close the gap in the blustery, cold conditions at Frankston Park.

For Sandringham, Katherine Smith and Isabel Huntington were beyond exceptional and left it all out on the park in heartbreaking, but extremely commendable performances.

Above all everyone left the ground smiling as the first thing both sides did was to shake hands, or more relevantly share hugs of joy and dismay equally. After that, in a show of great spirit, they took a combined sides photo to cap off the remarkably successful inaugural Challenge competition.

Dandenong coach Scott Gowans was

amazed by the side’s adherence to its plans and structures and to keep the ball moving even when up against the twin challenges of the Frankston sea-side gale and the Dragons.

But most of all, giving the Stingrays a premiership to put on the mantelpiece was the best part of all.

“I think the ability to rotate the ball, hold possession when we needed to and move out wide and bring the ball into the forward line was a feature and they listed and implemented it,” Gowans said. “To be the first side to win a premiership at the Stingrays means a lot and it means even more because the girls lost last year, came back and regrouped to win it this year.”

Walker’s performance earned her the player of the match award as she signed

off her Stingrays Youth Girls’ journey in the best way possible.

“It’s pretty awesome - especially for the girls as the boys haven’t won a grand final yet, to be the first Youth Girls and first team at Dandy to win a grand final is pretty special,” Walker said. “Basically I was told to stick on this player and beat her in every contest as she’d been smashing us in the third quarter and just to do my job and stay in front and I guess I did that.”

NARRE Warren Football Netball Club is hosting its inaugural School Holiday Camp on Friday 1 April 2016.

The Football and Netball Camps will run side by side at Kalora Park, Fox Road, Narre Warren North and will be led by elite coaches, ex AFL player, Heath Black and VNL player and coach, Jade Heinrich. Young Eagles are soaring

By JARROD POTTER ADDING a second VFL team to the Casey region, Cranbourne has earned the right to enter the newly formed VFL Women’s competition.

The VFL standard has replaced the former VWFL Premier Division, and while Cranbourne’s 2015 VWFL Division 1 premiership victory is fresh in the minds of many, coach Kris Smith is under no illusion that this year’s competition will be as fruitful for the young, developing list.

“We’re under no illusion that this won’t be hard work, we’ll have our bad days and good days and hopefully the good days outweigh the bad,” Smith said. “The average age is about at the 20 mark - for our list - we’re just a bunch of babies really and I’m a young coach still learning, so we’re just trying to see if we can get on a roll together.”

While the step up will be monumental - facing premiers Darebin on Sunday and runners-up Melbourne Uni in the first three weeks - Smith thinks the side will rise to the level, or at least be much better for the experience against strong opposition.

“I noticed last year when you play a team that’s not going that well, they can drag you down to that level and I really believe it goes the other way,” Smith said. “When we’re playing the better sides - more skilful and move with speed - they rise to that level and move up to meet them.

Ash Fennell will lead the side once again while Bianca Jakobsson (vicecaptain), Tess McEvoy (deputy vicecaptain), Ellie Keatch, Steph Binder and Sarah Mooney round out the VFL leadership group.

got in to the academy as a development player and is a handy inclusion.”

It marks an amazing turnaround for the region’s female football stocks after Berwick folded only two years ago, forcing Cranbourne to take on the extra

players and move to Division 1 virtually on the eve of the season.

But with a flag in its back-pocket and a VFL team now at Casey Fields 2, Smith said the Eagles couldn’t be prouder of the decision.

“I know the club is incredibly proud,- absolutely rapt with what’s taken place over the last two years,” Smith said. “They had to stick their necks out in the beginning when Berwick went under - Cranbourne had to put a few dollars on the line and ask are we going to do this so it’s great to reward them by making the VFL.” The Eagles will travel to Darebin for round one, to Seaford in round two before finally playing their maiden VFL Women’s home game on 17 April against Melbourne Uni. With the new competition and the competition intensifying, Smith is unsure of how the side is placed but Cranbourne has done everything to get up for its VFL debut season.

“Everyone keeps asking me how we’re going to go - I’ve have no idea,” Smith said. We’ve prepared well and training hard ticked a lot of boxes, so we just need to get out and have a crack and see how we look.

“No better way than to start against the best of the best.

“We’ve got last year’s grand finalists in the first three weeks so we’ll get a fair indication of how we’re tracking - but we’re going to improve as the year goes for sure.”

‘Rays pour on the power

By JARROD POTTER TAC CUP - ROUND 1 REVIEW DANDENONG’S round-one road trip hoodoo was broken emphatically on Saturday afternoon in a 22-point triumph over Gippsland.

Traralgon became the Stingrays’ latest port of victory after the nail-biting finish on Easter Saturday.

It was far closer than the final score suggests as Gippsland was within a whisker of kicking away with it in the last term, but Dandenong took the points to celebrate a rare victory in the bush.

Former Doveton player Josh Battle (four goals) had a bag on offer but missed a couple of easy chances - but found the bigger uprights when he was needed most for the Stingrays.

The running play of Tommy Glen and Tom Jok for Dandenong kept the side charging up the wings while Gippsland was well served by Ben Ainsworth, Kade Renooy and Tate Marsh through the middle.

It went back and forth through the fourth quarter, as Kade Renooy (three

goals) and Pakenham’s Jai Rout (two goals) kept the Power switched on.

Sam Fowler (four goals) must love the Stingrays colours as the small forward had an elite debut - snaking a series of amazing run-on goals as he found space and charged off with a few bounces.

Another to impress up forward was Danny Allsop (one goal) who created headaches for the Power’s small defenders.

“I said to the boys it’s always a challenge coming down to Gippsland in round one,” Dandenong coach Craig Black said.

“I thought our first half of footy was really good - it was what you’d expect from a TAC Cup team, two good teams that were pretty close.

Ainsworth, Renooy and Tyrone Hayes impressed the most on the Power’s side of the board.

It wasn’t all good news for Dandenong in the win though, as luckless defender Reece Piper (concussion) sat out most of the game after a headknock in a tackle in the second term.

He will have to sit out this weekend

due to the concussion rule, but will likely be available the week after.

With the country teams heading to Bendigo this weekend, Dandenong battles North Ballarat while Gippsland will square off with the home side Pioneers with both games at Queen Elizabeth Oval on Saturday.

Doveton’s season kicks off

This pair has the Aussie Spirit

CASEY Softball Association tandem Isabel Zaharias and Natasha Holt are set to take a swing at the best softballers in the country.

Zaharias, from Pearcedale, and Holt have both been selected for the Softball Australia 2016 Junior Women’s Spirit Squad.

Formerly known as the Aussie Pride, the Under 19s women’s team will feature in a tournament this July where they can test their mettle.

Their selection in the squad comes on the back of impressive nationals performances for Softball Victoria at the recently held Under 19 championships in Queensland.

Over the New Year, the Under 19 Victorians had a great return to form, finishing third with Zaharias (second base) and Holt (catcher) proving important throughout the tournament.

“We came third in the country was a good step up from 2014 where the side finished last,” Holt said. “It was good just because the way we came together as a lot of stuff happened.”

SOUTH EAST FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - GOOD FRIDAY QUESTIONS still well and truly outnumber the answers, but a wildly inaccurate Doveton has kicked off the 2016 South East Football Netball League season with an 18-point victory over an improved Hampton Park.

Robinson Oval was packed to the rafters for the season opener, the Doves failing to capitalise on a fast start, kicking 4.8 to 0.0 in the opening term with the advantage of a slight breeze blowing to the Frawley Road end of the ground.

Goals to Travis Davis, Lachie Batten, Mitch Woolgar and Michael Henry were the first-quarter highlights for the Doves, who should have nailed the Redbacks’ coffin closed.

Gun-recruit Aaron Davey was lively early for the home side, but faded out of the game with Tim Schwab fantastic in a tagging role for the Redbacks. Batten and former coach Shannon Henwood were calm drivers in heavy traffic for the Doves, who looked structured and organised in the opening quarter.

Cory Phillips kicked two, and Nathan Carver a third, to bring the Redbacks to within 16 points, 4-11(35) to 3-1 (19), at the main break.

The third quarter developed into a stalemate, both teams becoming frustrated, eventuating in a good old-fashioned melee 20 minutes in to the term. Bodies flew thick and fast on the outer wing, with a resulting goal to Kyle Hendy kicking the Doves out to a 23-point lead.

Another to Ash Scott extended the lead to 30 before Adam Koe kicked the Redbacks fourth, the score 6.13(49) to 4.1(25) at the final break.

“We’ve trained on switching the ball down back and then bringing the ball through the centre - it’s time to pull the trigger now boys,” said Redbacks’ coach Matt Shorey.

And the Redbacks responded, bringing the margin back to 15 points with goals to Nathan Allen and a long-bomb from Sean Winsall.

The Doves held firm however, with former Hawthorn-tall Jarrad Boumann completing a terrific game with a dominant last-quarter display across half back.

“He’s had a massive pre-season, and I probably expected that type of game out

“I think all coaches have a touch of control freak-ness about them, and I’m no different to that, so to be able to implement the things that I believe are important in a game of footy, that feels good again,” O’Brien said.

And Henwood?

“Obviously Shannon’s been coach for the last few years, but we made him captain again this year because he is an outstanding leader. What he did in the last quarter, that’s just leadership and he did it when we needed it most.”

Ryan Hendy’s return to Doveton was cut short with a calf injury while Hampton Park’s Nathan Dawes received a nasty cut to his finger after trying to protect himself from the fence.

The Doves host Officer and Hampton Park welcome Cranbourne to Robert Booth Reserve when the SEFNL season recommences on Saturday 9 April.

O’Brien said it felt it great to back in charge of his own senior side but also praised former coach Shannon Henwood for his on-field leadership, particularly early in the last term.

“It’s pretty exciting and a bit of a shock,” Zaharias said. “For me personally I’ve never made any of the Aussie squads so I was pretty proud.”

Teams from New South Wales, Queensland, New Zealand and America have participated in the tournament in previous years.

After starring for the Softball Victoria side, the the two Casey women will make the step up in hopes of using this tournament as a springboard towards the ISF Junior Women’s World Championships, held in 2017 in Clearwater, Florida, America.

Holt will also set her sights towards American college softball system, but hasn’t decided where she will go yet, despite offers already from NCAA Division 1 colleges.

In the meantime, the pair will return to the Casey colours for the state championships in April - playing both Under 19 and open women’s divisions - as well as Under 19s rep team tournaments.

Lexus luxury to new level

By DEREK OGDEN THE Lexus IS 200t is a success on many levels.

Pricewise it’s positioned between the upper medium passenger sedan and lower premium car market and it performs like a luxury sedan or a spritely sports coupe depending on how the driver sets up the controls.

Finally, the IS 200t offers a level of comfort and convenience normally found in vehicles positioned well into the luxury car market.

A replacement for the IS 250, sharp prices characterise the IS 200t range which consists of three variants - Luxury, F Sport and Sports Luxury, coming to the market at $64,041, $73,055 and $84,385 respectively, on the road.

One of two comprehensive Enhancement Packs can be added to the Luxury and F Sport models with a corresponding cost increase.

The test vehicle, for example, the IS 200t Luxury, included the Enhancement Pack 1, which adds an electric tilt and slide moonroof, upping the price to $66,870 on the road.

Lexus throws down the gauntlet to rivals with the IS 200t bringing a stack of standard luxury features including pre-collision safety, active cruise control, reversing alarm, rain-sensing wipers and power adjustable steering column.

Familiar look but Lexus sporty sedan comes with hidden advantages. a continuation of the classic IS lines sporty yet stylishly laid back.

The signature Lexus spindle grille has evolved with a three-dimensional design and a chrome-plated frame and darker grey insert from top to bottom.

Front-on the view is complemented with Bi Xenon HID low/high beam headlamps with LED daytime running lamps.

In profile, the car is characterised by a line which takes off to match those of the rear taillight unit.

The rear, once again, has a wide, sporty stance, emphasised by a trapezoidal design beginning between the

inner section of the tail light units and flaring out towards the side sections of the bumper.

The driver-oriented cockpit design was inspired by that of the Lexus LFA supercar with the dashboard divided into a display zone and an operation zone to offer drivers more comfortable, ergonomic interaction with the vehicle's control systems.

Soft-touch finishes can be found throughout, including padding on the centre console sides, while a piece of premium automotive embellishment is the silver metallic trim analogue clock with surface self illumination.

Generous 480 litre boot space is greatly enhanced by standard 60:40 split-folding rear seats.

The touch-sensitive Lexus Remote Touch controller is positioned close at hand on the centre console and is the contact with many of the IS 200t convenience systems including satellite navigation and reversing camera.

Lexus Enform enables mobile connectivity to a variety of services such as advanced Bluetooth with music streaming and phonebook, while dualzone automatic climate control is operated with new touch-sensitive electrostatic switches.

The engine is taken from the NX 200t compact sports utility vehicle, the 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged unit switched through 90 degrees to face north-south, and hooked up to the rear wheels via an eight-speed Sports Direct Shift automatic transmission.

With help from a revised exhaust system layout, it comes up with 180 kW, 27 kW more than the IS 250 V6 it replaces, and better than some of its close European rivals.

The highest strength tensile steel body structure, together with 10 airbags, helps provide excellent occupant protection.

Pre-Collision Safety System with Active Cruise Control are now standard on all models, while Blind Spot Monitor and Lane Departure Warning come on F Sport with option pack 2

and Sports Luxury models.

The IS platform has been reworked to deal with the characteristics of turbo power as opposed to the previous naturally aspirated unit.

The powertrain is well matched with the chassis, providing sharp steering, with the body rigidity helping maintain suspension control over varying road conditions.

Off the mark, the IS 200t is at the mercy of the turbo, which only comes into its own under heavy pedal pressure, urging the engine on to high revs.

There’s a non-intrusive growl, while an enhanced driving experience has been dialled in with auto-blip downshifts.

The IS 200t is Lexus’s latest entrylevel to its rear-wheel drive sports sedan line-up, which includes the GS and flagship LS lines.
