Quilts of many colours

Hills-based artist and teacher Ro Bruhn has been busy preparing for the Australian Quilting Convention mid-next month. She said she loves working with fabrics, papers, jewellery and painting in acrylic and pastels, with her use of colour a key theme. Ro says, “Colour plays a vital role in my work. Its in?uence can be seen across all of my art. She has exhibited in numerous exhibitions and has had her work published in many magazines. Ro teaches altered book and decorated paper workshops and sells her jewellery and mosaics at a gallery in the hills. She is pictured in her studio with two quilts that will be featured in the Picture: ROB CAREW coming show. 151963

A PROPOSED petrol station for Monbulk has gone back to the drawing board after a community consultation meeting saw issues raised with the plans. The consultation session held at the Monbulk Hub recently saw members of the community raise issues such as traffic management and zoning changes. The Woolworths petrol station is planned for a vacant lot on the corner of Monbulk and Carcoola roads in Monbulk. At the meeting, residents living on adjacent blocks said traffic was already an issue on the corner and the plans approved by VicRoads would make the problems worse. Yarra Ranges Mayor and Chandler Ward councillor Jason Callanan said it was very generous of the developer to review the plans at the request of the community. “The developer has made a commitment to review the plans to come up with a solu-

tion to improve traffic flow on that corner and make it safer, he said. “He didn’t have to do that, the plans have been signed off by VicRoads because they are satisfied it meets the necessary standards. Cr Callanan said this site is ideal for a petrol station as it’s close to other amenities and the middle of the Monbulk township. “The alternative for this sight would be a storage facility that would create a bland eyesore right as people drive into town, he said. Cr Callanan said it is a number one for him to have a petrol station built in Monbulk. “The old petrol station closed about four years ago and Monbulk needs a petrol station," he said. The revised plans for this new petrol station will move back through the planning department at council before progressing to a vote in council in the coming months.
