Crime hitting homes

THREE Pakenham homes were ransacked within 24 hours, according to police detectives.

Police investigating the burglaries did not indicate if the incidents were linked, but appealed for anyone with information about the break-ins to come forward.

The homes targeted on Thursday 17 March were at Cassowary Crescent, Ebony Drive and Constance Way. Days later, another Pakenham home on Cockatoo Road was also ransacked by offenders who smashed their way into the home before taking off with a significant stash of goods.

Cardinia Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Duane McDonald said offender/s used an unknown weapon to break into an Ebony Drive home via a rear sliding door.

Passports, two cameras, a significant amount of jewellery, a golf bag, golf clubs, iPads and a tablet computer were stolen sometime between 4.30pm and 10.40pm.

A man was seen running from the premises, and later offloading a number of unwanted stolen items at the top of Ebony Drive near Murphy Road.

Police described the offender as male, skinny to medium build, wearing a light-

coloured jumper with long sleeves.

Earlier that day, valuable jewellery was taken from a house in Cassowary Crescent.

Between 8.45am and 3.30pm, offender/s accessed the unlocked home and took various pieces of jewellery including 18 carat gold diamonds earrings.

No-one was seen entering or leaving the home.

It took offenders under an hour to ransack the third targeted Pakenham home.

Between 8pm and 9pm on Thursday 17 March, offender/s smashed through a rear glass sliding door at a house on Constance Way. The home’s main bedroom was ransacked and jewellery taken.

Police are investigating the three burglary incidents in addition to others reported across town during the week.

One incident involved a Cockatoo Road home being ransacked, with valuable gold bullion on the list of stolen items.

Police said the offender/s also took jewellery during the burglary, which occurred between 11.30am and 12.45am on Saturday 19 March.

Anyone with information about the burglaries are urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

By RUSSELL BENNETT THE patchy Melbourne weather on Saturday did little to dampen the spirits of locals at the 2016 running of the Parklea Pakenham and District Agricultural and Horticultural Show.

The show, at PB Ronald Reserve on the corner of Henry and John Streets, featured a brilliant range of activities, attractions and competitions, including: Miss Personality, a dunk machine, dodgem cars, a jumping castle, the spectacular dog high jump, animal competitions (sheep, alpacas, goats and poultry), the Rural Iron Man and Iron Woman, horticulture, agriculture, craft, cooking, floral arrangements, a chainsaw carver, Animals on the Move, a shearer, and a blacksmith.

“As you can see, the young people and families are coming out to the show more and more,” said show president Geoff Young on the weekend.

“It’s absolutely fantastic to see that the town is supporting it.

“We’ve got the sheep back this year there’s 92 sheep, which is fantastic - and we’ve got the tractors here as well so we’re bringing back the rural feel of it.

“We’ve got a wood-carver, a sheepsheerer, and a milking cow. The roots of the show are coming back to life, and with the present-day committee we want to make this the best festival the shire has had.”

Mr Young said he couldn’t believe the amount of people putting their hands up to be involved at this year’s show - by rolling up their sleeves and helping out, entering

the various competitions, or just being involved in some good old fashioned fun. “(Star News Group managing director) Paul Thomas did really well in the dunking machine, and Brian (Bass MP Brian Paynter), George (Cardinia Shire councillor George Blenkhorn), Craig (Craig Membrey from Membrey’s Transport and Crane Hire), Sharon (Cranbourne Leading Senior Constable and Cardinia Youth Resource Officer Sharon Patteron), and Jack (Pakenham identity Jack Mitchell) too,” he said.

“The way people have come out to support the show and the committee has been fantastic.”

AN independent petrol director has slammed a state parliamentary report for not recognising fuel drive offs as a crime.

Peter Anderson, of Apro Service Stations, says each of his servos including two in Cranbourne - loses about $12,000 a year in unpaid-for fuel. And that cost is growing, he says.

Casey is the second hardest-hit municipality for petrol drive-offs in the state - more than 3000 in the past 10 years, according to official crime stats.

However, industry representatives claim the offences are vastly under-reported.

Mr Anderson said it was disappointing that the Law Reform, Road

Victorian Councils are invited to apply for grants of up to $25,000 to partner with community groups to deliver local grafiti prevention initiatives.

“This is all too hard for governments to do anything about.”

According to Victorian crime statistics, more than 80 per cent of reported drive-offs are unsolved in the past 10 years.

The report did not rule on a Victoria Police 2013 directive not to pursue drive-offs because they were civil matters, not crimes.

The report stated there were evidentiary problems including proving an ‘offender’ intended to steal petrol, and hadn’t simply forgotten to pay.

“Everyone I talk to says it’s a theft,” Mr Anderson said. “This inquiry has done nothing about it.”

Servo representatives told the inquiry that the police stance fuelled further drive-offs.

Mr Anderson said it could also cause frustrated servo attendants to “take matters in their own hands”.

“The police are only interested in protecting their stats,” Mr Anderson said.

“If they can take (drive-offs) out of the crime stats, it doesn’t look as bad.”

Mr Anderson called for on-thespot fines, which would reduce court time and act as a practical deterrent.

The committee however stated infringements would be “inappropriate”.

It would reduce the deterrence value of the criminal law - which

punishes theft with up to 10 years’ jail - and was unlikely to reduce the offence, it stated.

The report’s recommendations included investigating fuel prepayment options, and for servos to access a database on stolen vehicles and number-plates with numberplate scanning/recognition technology.

RACV public policy general manager Brian Negus, who proposed this idea to the inquiry, said the technology could allow servo attendants to “shut down the pump” if a stolen vehicle or one with stolen plates arrives.

Mr Negus also didn’t support the police directive.

“If you go into the store and steal milk or brake fluid, you’re prosecuted. Stealing fuel is no different.”

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD POLICE are investigating a string of electrical store break-ins across Casey and Cardinia last week.

Detectives have released CCTV images of the men they believe were involved in breaking into three stores in Berwick, Cranbourne and Pakenham on the same night.

Six unknown offenders broke into the Berwick telecommunications store about 3am on 18 March but left empty-handed.

The same men allegedly then moved on to Cranbourne straight after, where they broke into another electrical store on the South Gippsland Highway about 3.20am and stole a number of computers and phones.

Then about half an hour later, at

about 3.50am, the same men are believed to have broken into the Telstra store on Main Street.

Here they used an angle grinder to get inside and caused at least $5000 worth of property damage, but stole nothing.

The thieves used the grinder to cut the lock off the door and smash through the wall at the Pakenham shop, which had been burgled just a month earlier.

The intruders triggered the Telstra store’s alarm and were inside for less than five minutes.

After the previous burglary, all iPhones and Samsung phones had been put inside two large metal safes, which are bolted to the floor.

Senior Constable Jacky A’Herne commended the Pakenham staff for making security upgrades in the

weeks since the first burglary.

A white Mitsubishi Outlander and a dark Toyota FJ Cruiser were spotted around the time of these break-ins.

Walk for rare illness

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD IT’S a race against the clock to find a cure.

This is how Berwick’s Fiona Dowdell describes the decision that sees her a week into her 55day journey - a 1100 kilometre walk from the Sydney Opera House to Melbourne’s Federation Square.

Fiona’s grandson Tristan, now five, may be the youngest person to be diagnosed with the rare illness, Friedreich’s ataxia.

It is a fatal genetic disease that affects thousands of people world-wide, and which could result in Tristan experiencing loss of vision, hearing, scoliosis and eventual cardiac failure.

Tristan’s mum is Natalie, who is the daughter of Garry, Fiona’s husband. Fiona and Garry were in the process of raising money for World Vision when they learnt of Tristan’s condition.

That’s when Fiona decided something had to be done.

“Garry and I had committed to doing a trek in Nepal to raise funds for World Vision, and we were busy fund-raising when Tristan was diagnosed,” Fiona told Star News.

“I said to Garry, this is something we should be doing for Tristan.

“I’ve always loved my running, walking and gym, and knew a walk was something I could focus on.”

Fiona set out on her walk on 14 March, and is planning to reach Federation Square on 7 May. Her journey will take her throughout New South Wales, and the long way down the east

coast of Victoria, before she turns north again through Berwick and Beaconsfield and continues on to Melbourne’s CBD. Throughout her trek, she is being joined by a number of different people for separate stints, while Garry provides constant support in an accompanying caravan.

Tristan, Natalie, and Fiona’s mum, Carol, were at the Opera House to wish her well.

About eight days into the walk, Fiona spoke to Star News after walking three and a half hours from South Nowra to just near Vincentia.

Fiona is on average covering about 20 kilometres every morning.

And while she has reached $10,000 of her $20,000 target, Fiona said her walk was about more than just raising money for a cure - it was about raising awareness.

“You can’t put a price on that because all of a sudden we have hundreds of thousands of people who know about Friedreich’s ataxia,” she said.

And when it’s all stripped back, it’s about five-year-old Tristan, who is always smiling “from ear to ear”.

“He’s always happy,” Fiona said.

“It doesn’t matter what’s going on, he’s always got a smile on his face.

“And he’s always thinking of other people.”

JUST to let Mayor Sam Aziz know it has been three weeks since I wrote to this paper so I want you to understand I am not obsessed with you, and to let you know I don’t write weekly about you.

I want to mention your words (broken record syndrome ) which you tell the Casey residents and Ratepayers Association on many of your rants.

You tell us we the ratepayers need to have rate increases. Well, I will tell you we don’t.

Where is the money the developers pay council when they build new estates?

Is there money placed into the budget or does it get put away for a rainy day? $14 a year sounds cheap when you just say it that way, but when you add it to your rates of a few thousand dollars it is a lot.

I have been out and about in Casey and people ask me, I thought the mayor was joining you on your door knocking walk.

See mayor, the residents hear you but don’t see you.

Now where have I heard that before?

I FIND it very interesting indeed that Casey Mayor Sam Aziz has time to attend a community meeting that would no doubt have also been attended by Donald Trump supporters and the Klu Klux Klan if it was held in the United States at this time (Call For Respect, News, 17 March).

Cr Aziz is willing to meet with anti-mosque protesters but he has no time to meet with individuals, such as myself, who want to put forward ideas and strategies that would allow Casey council to function within the rates cap of 2.5 per cent next financial year without slashing essential services.

The real problem that needs to be looked at here is the issue of evidence.

There is absolutely no evidence that mosques have only a negative impact on their communities.

Mayor Sam Aziz and Casey council also have absolutely no evidence that any rates capping at 2.5 per cent will equate to slashing essential services (Council Applies To Blow Out Rates Cap, News, 11 March).

Casey’s policies should be influenced by facts and evidence not emotion or prejudice.

Casey residents and ratepayers have a

clear choice.

We can demand that policies be driven by evidence and logic or we can allow the future of this municipality to be determined by fear and ignorance.

Cr Sam Aziz is not providing Casey residents with leadership by appealing to the latter instead of the former.

Casey’s future depends on transparency and a capacity for finding alternatives to the ideas of Donald Trump and the Klan.

I am surprised that the City of Casey are doing this, but not really. I am reading their budget for the 2015/2016 period and I note that there are a number of things that should be pointed out.... and would be better if the council answer them directly, In rates and charges they received the following amounts 14/15 = $177mil, (14/15 forecast 177mil), and 15/16 188mil giving them an 10 million increase the other income and grants issued have not changed very much, as you can see below.

I note that the employee expenses jump from 84mil in 14/15 to 93mil in 15/06.

Why was this? There has been not a lot of hiring? So would this have been a pay increase of 9.95 per cent for that period?

IT’S not every day that an evening meal is disrupted by a copperhead snake, but that was the case for members of one Cranbourne South family on Tuesday night when they were forced to swap their salad tongs for snake tongs!

Snake Catcher Victoria’s Barry Goldsmith said the juvenile copperhead snake would have been brought in by the cat.

“If you let cats roam they will bring snakes inside,” Mr Goldsmith said.

The Cranbourne mother spoke to 3AW Breakfast show hosts Ross and John on air about the evening visit, saying her toddler daughter notified them of the snake.

“My three-year-old daughter found it. She came running in saying ‘snake, snake, snake’.

“Our first reaction was she’s a bit if a storyteller and shouldn’t make up things like that up... but sure enough it was a juvenile snake,” she told 3AW listeners.

But Mr Goldsmith said copperhead snakes are “our friends”.

“They are misunderstood,” he said.

“Copperhead snakes are not so dangerous, they have never killed anybody in Australia and they eat tiger snakes.”

Mr Goldsmith said he caught four adult copperhead snakes throughout the southeast region on Wednesday 16 March and one on a Botanic Ridge property.

Last week Myuna Farm’s much-loved boar goat, Ivory, gave birth to rare kid triplets.

The two black female goats and one white male goat were born about 3.45pm on Wednesday 16 March, after a complicated labour which lasted 48 hours.

River Gum Ward Councillor Wayne Smith dropped by Myuna Farm to meet the latest additions, who can be viewed every day between 10am and 4pm at the farm.

Visitors will be able to cuddle and pet the kid goats in about two weeks.

POW’s war diary looted

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH MARIE Bennetti vividly remembers sitting by her father’s side listening to his tales of survival as a prisoner of war.

Those memories are all she has left, after thieves ransacked her Cannons Creek home, making off with her father’s war diary.

Thieves stripped the family of close to $30,000 worth of jewellery and collectables, but it’s a small paperback POW diary, belonging to English WWII veteran, Robert Irwin, that keeps Marie up at night.

“Dad always said it was the ‘notepad’ as he called it, that kept him going, once he escaped the Italian prisoner of war camp,” Marie said.

The Bennetti family were in the midst of moving house when their Bluff Road property in Cannons Creek was targeted.

“It’s so cruel,” Marie said of the break-in.

“My dad’s war diary is of no use to them and what hurts the most is the thought that they have thrown it away in the bin, because it doesn’t belong there.”

Marie had kept her father’s POW diary in a safe in her bedroom, along with his infirmary logbook and wartime ID documents.

“They don’t know the significance of what was in that plastic bag and they wouldn’t care - in hindsight I should have given his diary to a museum,” Marie said.

Robert Irwin was a soldier in the Green Howards Yorkshire Regiment, a part of the King’s Division of the British Army.

Fittingly, he died in Redcar, England the home of the Green Howards, in 1983.

Their flag was draped over his coffin.

“My Mum gave it to me because I lived in Australia, Mum said that Dad would have wanted me to have it, be-

cause my youngest sister and I would sit on the floor next to his chair and listen to him read stories from his diary,” Marie said.

“Mum would cook him up a whole chicken of a Sunday afternoon and

he’d give us a chicken wing each - I still love the taste of a chicken wings today.”

Robert Irwin suffered inside two POW camps from the age of 23, during his two stints at war.

But it was his Italian escape which was lucky enough to be documented with a pad and pencil.

“His diary would have originally been about 50 pages long and it detailed his survival through what he called ‘Toscana’ and that he ate frogs, took refuge in a barn and hid from the owners where he ate the chickens’ eggs,” Marie said.

The Bennetti family, who had called Cannons Creek home for four years, now reside in Junction Village and said they had taken their eyes off their home for one night, on Wednesday 3 February.

“My son had been in a car accident and wrote his car off - we were taking care of him at our new home when we were burgled,” Marie said.

“I don’t care about the coin collection, the stamps or my jewellery - just my dad’s diary, you can’t put a price on it, you can’t replace what’s in it.

“Dad told us his notepad was his connection to home while at war, he was hoping he could use it to help us relate to what he had been through and understand his bouts of malaria.”

Robert Irwin had sketched the Green Howards crest in his diary, with his wife’s name, Bella, etched in it, which was photographed by his local newspaper in north-east England upon his return from war.

“I’m heartbroken and I just want it back - my most treasured item was that diary, nothing has a value to me anymore and I’m selling off anything of worth to me because I’d rather do that than have it stolen,” Marie said.

“I didn’t tell my staff, but I would make bookings in fake names so that if a regular or local walked in or called for a table I’d have one for them,” she said.

“Because that’s what you have to do in business, look after your regulars - and the locals appreciated it.”

But busy they were. After the first episode went to air, the Wings and Fins website and message bank crashed.

“We didn’t realise the phones could only take 49 messages so we had to up our plan and fix the website - it was hilarious,” Nolsy said.

The fun, country mum was made famous around Australia, for her loveable antics and for her fresh flown in crayfish - and 12 months on since the show’s filming, Nolsy is still reaping the rewards.

“We have people making special trips out here from right across Australia, not just Melbourne, we get people from Perth, Darwin, and Sydney who are on holidays,” she said.

But the attention on Tooradin hasn’t just heated up Nolsy’s kitchen.

“Sales are definitely up because of the Hotplate spotlight, we are busy all the time but when people can’t get in here they go to Tides Bar and Grill down the road, so it’s been great for the whole community and Kooweerup as well,” Nolsy said.

“So many people didn’t know where Tooradin was, including a lot of local people from Pakenham and Berwick and they’re coming in as well.

“I received an email from another Tooradin business owner saying thank you for putting Tooradin on the map and that part of it has been really good.”

POLICE are investigating after a $3000 custom-built trailer was stolen from a Hallam factory.

Ten custom-built jacks, worth $2700 each, were also stolen during the break-in.

The thieves are believed to have broken into BKB Building

Solutions, at 109-111 Wedgewood Road, sometime between 5pm on 29 January and 8am on 1 February.

The intruders cut a padlock on a side gate to get inside, before stealing the registered 2012 double-axle Victor custom-built trailer, with a cage.

The trailer, registration U71768, is black and has a BKB logo printed on both sides.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen indicated he would hand Smith a suspended sentence if he pleaded guilty.

Before handing down a final sentence, Mr Vandersteen said he’d like the victim to have the chance to make a victim impact statement.

Smith’s risk of re-offending would also be assessed by a forensic psychiatrist in the interim.

In Smith’s favour were the age of the offences and the two-year delay for police to lay charges.

In pleading guilty, Smith spared the victim from re-living the incidents in court, Mr Vandersteen said.

The magistrate said it was important that when released, Smith was under parole supervision because of the nature of his offences.

Smith next appears at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court for sentencing on 19 April.

A FORMER owner of a Berwick children's gymnastics club has pleaded guilty to a new set of historic child sex abuse charges.

Steven Andrew Smith, who owned Funtastic Gymnastics, befriended and indecently assaulted his nine-year-old victim twice near Cape Paterson caravan park in 2000, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told on 22 March.

Then 23, Smith invited the boy to a nearby cave on the foreshore where highly inappropriate touching took place, police prosecutor Senior Constable Aimee Ryland told the court.

The act was repeated several days later in the same beachside locale.

Sen Const Ryland said Smith also picked up the boy from his Pakenham home, took him to a pool for a swim and walked to railway tracks near Toomuc Valley Creek in 2001.

The indecent acts were again allegedly performed by the tracks several times over two or three months.

Sen Const Ryland said the boy was also invited to a room in Funtastic Gymnastics, where he was shown porn magazines.

The court was told that contact with the boy decreased soon after.

Smith, who appeared by video link from Ararat prison, is serving a five-year custodial term for several counts of indecently assaulting a nine-year-old boy at Funtastic Gymnastics over several months in the early 2000s.

Smith’s lawyer said the accused had been convicted after pleading not guilty in the County Court.

The charges were similar but more serious than in the present case, the lawyer said.

The lawyer argued there had been significant delay in laying the most recent charges last year.

Police had received the complaint and interviewed Smith in 2013.

Smith, who was jailed in October 2012, was eligible for parole in several weeks, his lawyer told the court.

A 22-YEAR-OLD Narre Warren man has been arrested after allegedly sexually assaulting two different female employees at the same clothing store within 24 hours.

Police allege the man entered the clothing store on Little Bourke Street, in Melbourne’s

CBD, on Friday 18 December and sexually assaulted an employee.

The same man is then alleged to have attended the same store the next night and sexually assaulted another female staff member.

It’s alleged the man returned

to the store a third time, on Friday 4 March, and fondled his genitals through his clothes.

He has been charged with two counts of sexual assault and one count of offensive behaviour, and was bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 15 August.

Budding writers learn the ropes CASEY’S young writers are fast learners.

Last Thursday Star News reporter Lachy Moorhead was again the guest speaker at the weekly writing session held by the Casey Youth Press, a group run out of the City of Casey’s Youth Services division.

The Casey Youth Press group was started late last year, and gives students aged in their late teen to mid-twenties the opportunity to write about local events, news, issues and fictional stories, and get their work published on the youth website and Facebook page.

Teaming up with Star News, the City of Casey invited Lachy for the second time to visit and talk to the students about his experience as a journalist, while also fielding follow-up questions from last year’s presentation.

Lachy was asked about ethics in the media, how reporters source their stories, and what stories he has previously covered. The students asked many intricate questions, showing maturity beyond their years and also highlighting how much they had gleaned from the previous presentation.

Lachy also spoke about the structure of his day, the difference between an ‘on-therecord’ and ‘off-the-record’ conversation, tips for interviewing, and the perks of the job.

The Casey Youth Press initiative was born out of council’s ‘Fresh Words’ writing program, which encourages young writers in the municipality to write and contribute their own original pieces.

Crowds swell centre opening

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH CARS lined surrounding Narre Warren streets and security dispersed traffic chaos inside the Casey Central car park on Thursday at the centre’s official opening.

Hundreds of excited locals lined up to shop, eat and browse the $155 million redevelopment and 84 new stores.

Former Melbourne Football Club forward Russell Robertson hosted the formalities which included a welcome to country and smoking ceremony, followed by indigenous dance.

Casey Mayor Sam Aziz congratulated owners the Scentre Group on the refurbished shopping hub, calling it a magnificent investment and retail precinct.

Cr Aziz told the crowds: “1200 jobs were created in the construction of this centre,” and added that the outlets will “foster a further 400 jobs”.

The centre can accommodate 1367 cars and features foodie giants Aldi and Coles with fierce competitor Woolworths set to open in late 2016.

Casey Central Centre Manager Daniel Boyle said he was excited to introduce shoppers to their new meeting place.

“Run by locals, for locals, this bustling social and community hub will have all the essentials our shoppers have asked for under one roof from services to fresh food and casual dining,” he said.

Braving the crowds, 70-yearold Ton Vandelft said Casey Central means he no longer has to fight for a car park at Westfield Fountain Gate.

“We have everything here,” Mr Vandelft said.

The redevelopment of the centre has added a kid’s indoor play area, outdoor dining and a market style fresh food quarter, home to Arthur’s Health Store, Fish Pier, The Butcher Club and

Market Place fruit and vegetable store.

Leanne Goff was one happy customer, commenting: “Very impressed, has some fantastic shops!”

Jo-Ann J. Schmitz Fitzgerald added: “It’s very busy...crazy. Took me about 30 minutes this morning at 11am to get a car spot. If you can park a few blocks and walk it, then that’s fine. Otherwise, I’d recommend to wait a few days/week before you go. That being said, it does have some great shops but some I cannot see working, but hope they stay".

Vanessa Brown wrote “It certainly was busy in the car park today but well worth the wait for one! I think it’s got some great shops worth revisiting and luv the fresh food market!!”

Berwick’s new-look market THE Farmers’ Market has been relaunched after operating for over eight years at the Cheese Factory in Berwick.

New food stalls are being introduced along with the existing stallholders plus a new aspect which is to include quality craft products.

The Berwick Farmers and Craft Market has nearly 50 stalls operating at the Cheese Factory site.

Products include eggs, vegetables, fruit, and a range of meats, fish, honey, flowers and herbs which all come from the farmers themselves.

There are also added value foods such as gourmet pies, cakes, biscuits and specialty breads.

The craft products are varied and include children’s unique clothing, cosmetics, jewellery and

other personal products.

There is a range of food such as a barbecue, gourmet pies, dim sums, dumplings and sweet goodies.

For the children this month, there is an animal farm, a jumping castle, face painting and Easter Bunny will be there handing out free Easter eggs.

The market is run by the Rotary Club of Berwick as a community event with all profits from managing the market being put back into the community.

The Berwick Farmers and Craft Market is held on the fourth Saturday of the month at the Old Cheese Factory in Homestead Road, Berwick. This month it will be on Easter Saturday 26 March.

Warriors’ way wins

By RUSSELL BENNETT JEFF Reid doesn’t care how his team wins - just as long as it gets the job done.

The Pakenham Warriors’ Big V Division 2 men’s basketball side headed to Coburg on Saturday night and what ensued was anything but pretty.

Still, at the end of it, Reid walked off the court with his boys as two-point victors - 7371.

The Warriors and the hometown Giants have a history of tight recent battles at the venue, and Saturday night’s season opener for both teams was no different - with new Pakenham guard Trent Lee capping off a strong all-around game on both ends of the floor with a goahead, game-winning bucket with just 2.3 seconds left on the clock.

“We designed the play - it was for Trent and he was supposed to be going to the rack and he just pulled up and shot the jumper,” said Warriors coach Reid about the play.

“He was rolling, which was fine - he knocked a couple down before that.

“We’ve got full confidence in his play and obviously he had the confidence to make that shot.

“If we had to go to overtime we were going to overtime but it was a matter of making sure we got the stops when it mattered.”

Reid admitted the contest was hardly a “pretty” one to watch, but in reality he couldn’t care less.

“It was an absolute grind and I hate playing zone but I had to go with it tonight unfortunately,” he said.

“For some reason our man (defense) wasn’t working and

sometimes you have to resort to that. I hate it, but I’ll take the win.

“We do what we need to do to get that win. I’m very relieved.”

Reid said the improvement on last year’s team was there for all to see on Saturday night ... in patches.

“I think our fitness is probably not where I thought it was,” he said.

“Through those grind patches we looked tired and there were some sloppy plays with bad shots, but we grinded it out - which I love - and we stayed with them.

“They went on a big run and they got really loud. I give all the credit to my guys - they hung tough and it was awesome to see.”

Ben Gaze led the new-look Warriors with 27 points while big man Paul Phillips added an impressive double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

For the Giants, guard Mweemba Maluma top-scored with 17 points but was well guarded and held to just 36 per cent from the field.

Jordan Harding (13 points, 12 rebounds) provided some valuable points down the stretch - including some off secondchance looks - but it wasn’t enough for the home side to put the Warriors to the sword.

Earlier in the day their Youth League men’s side claimed a brilliant 74-67 debut away win over the Mildura Heat to start their season in style.

James Magrath was superb for Pakenham in his return to Warriors set-up with 25 points (on 10-17 shooting), 6 rebounds and a whopping 7 steals as his side piled on 48 second half points. Lewis Newman also

shone with a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double and Lee Belton finished with 11 points and 9 boards.

Coach Simo Pajdic said his men made life very difficult for themselves in shooting just 40 per cent from the free-throw line, but added how thrilled he was with their performance.

“We started off really well and built an early lead,” he said.

“We pressed them early and got plenty of transition buckets.

“We had 16 steals as a team so the press really worked.”

Pajdic praised Magrath, who entered the season under a limited preparation.

“He was probably the reason we got over the line - his intensity, and his pressure on the defensive end,” he said.

But next, following Easter, Pakenham has a brutal back-toback - on 2 April from 6pm at Patterson River against Chelsea, and the following day from 1pm as the curtain-raiser to the senior men’s clash against Mornington.

“Our next weekend is the toughest in the division,” Pajdic said.

“We stuck with Chelsea in the pre-season for three-and-ahalf quarters, but Mornington swept the floor with us.

“But look, the game isn’t over before it’s begun. We’ll try and push the ball early and that’ll give us the best chance to win.”

Also on Saturday night, the Warriors’ Big V women’s side gallantly went down to the Cougars 64-41 in Keysborough.

Following the Easter break, the Warriors men will host Mornington on 3 April from 3pm, and the women’s side will host Casey on 2 April from 6pm.

Aussie floorball to land in Latvia

Ray Staindl, Gavin Staindl, Ben Monckton, James Parnall and Jeremy Monckton will head off to Latvia later this year - aiming to break new ground.

WHEN the Australian men’s national team lines up in the World Floorball Championships in Latvia later this year, the boys in the green and gold will be aiming to create their own history.

Having recently returned home from the World Cup qualifiers for the Asia Pacific region, five Pakenham players Ray and Gavin Staindl, Ben and Jeremy Monckton, and James Parnall - will be crucial to the national team’s endeavours in breaking new ground later this year; making out of the group stage of the world titles for the first time. Ever.

Just as in ice hockey, floorball contains line changes during games - five players on, five players off - and the Pakenham boys made up a crucial line change during the qualifiers in Thailand, only conceding goals in one game for the tournament.

The Australian national team is ac-

tually at a disadvantage when it comes to training and cohesion amongst the group, given players come from right across the vast expanses of the country.

But that’s what makes that Pakenham line change so crucial.

Looking ahead to the worlds in Latvia this December, the Australians know they’re the rank underdogs. But they’ve been in that position before.

“We had a huge upset in the last one, two years ago, where we beat Russia,” said Gavin Staindl.

“We were paying 16-1 on Sportsbet.

“People just didn’t rate us, but after the World Championships last year, and what we did at the Asian qualifiers this year, we’re expecting to advance from the pool stage.

“Never has it happened before where a non-European team has advanced from the pool stages at the world championships, but that’s our goal.”

The Pakenham Floorball Club - based at Cardinia Life - currently has over 200 members and it’s growing continually.

In fact, they’re about to start up a new club in Officer to cater for the swell of numbers.

“We’ll have a Pakenham club, an Officer club, and we’ve already starting doing stuff in Berwick,” Staindl said.

“The word is getting out there, and it does have this trickling down effect.

“Parents have come up to me and said it’s fantastic that we can have elite-level players mixing it with the grassroots.”

Staindl said there are rapid steps currently being taken by the Internationally Olympic Committee to have the sport in the Olympic Games.

“I’m talking to kids now saying in a couple of Olympics’ time - maybe one or two - they could be there,” he said.

“That is such a huge, powerful drawcard to kids.”

Good win to young Silverbacks

By RUSSELL BENNETT THE Pakenham Silverbacks’ junior side has continued its outstanding form in Gridiron Victoria’s Under 19 competition, dominating its match-up with the Croydon Rangers on Sunday morning to snare a 5428 victory.

The two sides tied 14-14 in Round 1, but right from the opening play on the weekend - an onside kick delivered and recovered by James Avia - the offense worked efficiently to drive down the field. Faa and Peter Mulipola took turns running the ball up the middle, breaking multiple tackles in their path, while Austin Tala worked the outside pitches and quarterback Avia threw a number of completions to provide a well-rounded attack. But the story of the day was Pakenham’s incredibly tough, gritty defense, which forced multiple fumbles and dragged Rangers quarterback Tom Veale into the backfield for a number of sacks.

Rookie defensive lineman Akapei Pua put in a stand-out performance, shutting down inside runs and picking up a fumble to run in for a touchdown early in the game.

Pakenham’s women’s side, meanwhile, is just four points adrift of top spot in the standings despite losing 52-34 to the Geelong Buccaneers on Saturday afternoon in a highly-entertaining contest.

Right from the start they came out hard, opening their first offensive drive with a trick formation that left Jess Jhajj uncovered to catch for a first down, with Lydia Patau running in the first score shortly after.

The defense was initially caught off-guard against the strength and agility of league MVP and Western Bulldogs AFL forward Richelle Cranston, who made big yards for the Buccaneers on outside runs.

Pressure from the defensive line - led by Yana Jones and Lema Laumua - kept the Buccs out of the middle. But after going score-for-score, the first half ended with the Buccaneers taking a narrow 22-20 lead.

early in the second half and outstanding running out of a spread offense kept the Buccaneers on their toes - leading to another touchdown. THE Pakenham Racing Club’s new home at Tynong seems to be changing daily - but ironically it’s the unchanged opinion of many that will give the club its greatest reason to celebrate its first birthday at the track this weekend.

Saturday marks 12 months to the day since the Robbie Griffiths-trained Faction stormed down the middle of the track to win the opening race at Racing.com Park, a day when the bedrock of the $72-million facility - the turf track - received a glowing endorsement indeed.

From then, to now, a lot has changed, with a synthetic track, twilight racing and the upcoming addition of night racing on 7 April making the PRC one of the most progressive clubs in the land.

But one thing hasn’t changed; and that’s the praise of the turf track which just happens to be one of the best in the world.

“There’s no doubt that it’s a world-class set up and as good to ride on as any track in the world,” said jockey Brad Rawiller, who leads the way with 16 winners at the track.

“Every horse gets its chance and it’s just an incredible surface and one that’s holding up incredibly well with a lot of racing. Then in the winter we’ve got the synthetic track which has proven to be a winner as well.”

Rawiller said the club’s decision to give the turf track a rest through the winter months of 2015 had been a wise one.

“The jockeys thought we could keep racing on it to be honest, because it was holding up that well but that break has done it the world of good,” Rawiller said.

“The mistake was made at Sandown, where we raced on it a little too soon, but this track hasn’t dropped in condition at all. A month ago there was a huge downpour just before the meeting started and you wouldn’t have known it had rained at all, the track raced perfectly.”

Rawiller said expectations were high for Victoria’s first new track in 40 years, but the club and the racing industry has certainly delivered on its promise.

“Expectations were high, and so they should have been building a track from scratch and with all the modern technology we have today,” he said.

It was expected to be pretty good but the club has certainly come to the party and it’s as good as anyone could have asked for.”

Rawiller had a birthday message for the club.

“Congratulations to Pakenham and Racing Victoria for bringing this whole thing to fruition in such a successful way,” he said.

“This track hasn’t been built over the last 12 months; it’s been a vision from nearly 10 years ago and it’s a credit to those who have pulled it off. It’s a great acquisition to the industry and something we’re all very proud of.”

The next meeting at Tynong is a Thursday twilight to be held on 31 March, the precursor to the Night Racing Launch on Thursday 7 April.

Crossover’s rugged style

By EWAN KENNEDY AT THE end of 2015 Fiat expanded its 500 range with the introduction of a crossover called the 500X. Significantly bigger than the standard Fiat 500 it has more interior space, utilised through the convenience of rear doors.

The Fiat 500X was designed in conjunction with the new Jeep Renegade.

Italian Fiat now controls Jeep after the American company got into financial trouble during the GFC. There’s a nice combination of Italian style and American 4WD knowhow in this partnership.

Fiat 500X as tested this week is an all-wheeldrive (AWD) Cross Plus, rather than a true 4WD in the manner of a Jeep.

Should you not need AWD the Fiat 500X also comes with 2WD, through the front wheels, at a lower cost.

Visually, the Fiat 500X is an expanded version of the 500 with a family resemblance to its baby brother at the front, in various details around the body, and in its funky interior.

The latter has the pseudo metallic look that appeals to all Fiat lovers.

Cross Plus is easily identified by the protection bars front and rear, with further body mouldings around its wheelarches and on the sills.

Like its little brother, the 500X is offered in a huge variety of colours and you can choose from a large range of accessories to permit personalisation.

sill inserts, five alloy wheel designs, fabrics and leather can be part of the pack. Even the key fob can be ordered in five different designs.

Our test 500X was in glowing white with red door mirrors and stripes in the same bright hue on the lower areas of the doors, best of all is the red-and-white 500X decal stretching most of the way along the roof.

You have to be tall to see this feature but it looked brilliant when viewed beneath our balcony at home - particularly with a nice cappuccino in hand...

The range starts at $28,000 for the 500X Pop with front-wheel-drive and a six-speed manual gearbox and rises to $39,000 for the all-wheeldrive 500X Cross Plus with automatic transmission. In between are the Pop Star (great name!) at $33,000 and the Lounge for $38,000.

The 500X Pop can be specified with a sixspeed dual-clutch auto for an added $2000, the

automatic is standard in the Pop Star.

The AWD models, the Lounge and Cross Plus, have a nine-speed automatic.

Equipment levels are high to justify the prices.

Even the entry level 500X Pop has 16-inch alloy wheels, a 3.5-inch TFT instrument display, cruise control, paddle shifts on the automatic, Fiat’s Uconnect system with a 5.0-inch touchscreen, steering wheel-mounted audio controls and Bluetooth connectivity.

The 500X Pop Star gets has 17-inch alloys, automatic headlights and wipers, three driving modes (Auto, Sport, and Traction plus), keyless entry and start, and a reversing camera.

The Uconnect system has a 6.5-inch touchscreen and GPS navigation.

Fiat 500X Lounge also receives 18-inch alloy wheels, a 3.5-inch colour TFT instrument cluster display, automatic-high-beam, a BeatsAudio Premium sound system with subwoofer and eight

speakers, dual zone automatic air conditioning, interior ambient lighting and two-tone premium interior trim.

Cross Plus has steeper ramp angles, xenon headlights, and a different finish on the dashboard. Power in all models is from a 1.4-litre turbo-petrol in 500X all models.

It produces 103 kW and 230 Nm in the frontdrive models and 125 kW and 250 Nm in the AWDs. Fiat is very strong in the safety field and the 500X has more than 60 standard or available items that include a reversing camera, forward collision warning, LaneSense Warning, lane departure warning; blind-spot monitoring and rear cross path detection.

The ESC system has integrated electronic roll mitigation and seven air bags are installed in all models. Ride comfort is very good and it’s obvious a lot of work has gone into noise and vibration suppression.

Indeed, the Fiat 500X is as quiet, or quieter as many SUVs from the next class up.

Interior space is good and four adults can be carried, though tall travellers may have to compromise on legroom at times.

Handling isn’t exactly Italian sporty but the 500X is neutral in the way it feels until you’re well above the cornering speeds likely to be attempted by the average owner.

Outward visibility is very good thanks to the relatively upright greenhouse.
