School marks milestone

DRIVERS who fail to lock their vehicles are fuelling an emerging crime trend within the Yarra Ranges, according to Lilydale Inspector Peter Wheeler.

Inspector Wheeler said there had been a substantial rise in theft from a motor vehicle over the past 12 months, with crime statistics released late last week showing 575 cases in 2015 within the Yarra Ranges Police Service Area.

Although slightly down on the previous year, Inspector Wheeler said the statistics still showed this was a crime class on the rise.

“The broader community needs to be selfaware, not to keep valuables inside their vehicle,” Inspector Wheeler said.

“The message doesn’t seem to be getting through.”

Inspector Wheeler said it wasn’t uncommon for groups of youths to cruise the streets at night, looking for an opportunity.

He said they often tried door handles of hundreds of cars, including those parked inside a private residence.

“It seems to be youth offenders that are driving this category,” he said. “They are often successful, too; taking wallets, mobile phones and even laptop computers.”

He said what was most frustrating was this was often a preventable crime.

“It’s just either laziness or lack of awareness that is fuelling this category,” he said.

Inspector Wheeler said another worrying trend within the region was theft of a number plate.

He said although there were no statistics to support his theory, he believed there was a correlation between number plate thefts and rise in fuel prices.

“What’s happening is number plates are being stolen to be used in petrol drive-offs,” he said.

On a broader perspective, the total offences within Yarra Ranges increased 11.3 per cent, from 7068 to 7867.

Family violence incidents increased from 1374 to 1490, a rise of 8.4 per cent.

Trends within the state of Victoria included increases in drug dealing and trafficking offences (up 17.7 per cent), and weapons offences (up 17.1 per cent).

Meanwhile, Liberal member for Evelyn, Christine Fyffe, has hit out at the Victorian Government over the 2015 statistics.

Mrs Fyffe said the total rise in offences is 800 more crimes than under the former Coalition Government.

Chipping in for health hub

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS STATE and federal MPs joined members of Yarra Ranges Shire Council for the official turning of the sod ceremony for the new Belgrave Health Hub on Monday 21 March.

MPs Samantha Dunn, James Merlino and Jason Wood joined with Yarra Ranges Mayor Jason Callanan to officially open the building process.

The two-storey Belgrave Health Hub will contain 14 consulting rooms, four multi-purpose rooms, a large car park and children’s facilities.

Funding for the project has seen all members of government come together with federal funding of $3.84 million, state funding of $1.72 million, Yarra Ranges Council funding of $3.58 million with health provider Inspiro contributing $250,000.

Inspiro president Stephen Potter said he was looking forward to be able to harmonise the group’s services.

“We have grown our services in the community over the last 21 years, but we are a bit disjointed at the moment,” he said.

“We are looking forward to the capacity of this building and being able to provide services in a centralised environment.”

Federal Member for La Trobe Jason Wood said he was very happy to see the project moving along.

“This has been one of those projects,” he said.

“I said many years it would take all the plants lining up for this one to come to life.”

Mr Wood said one of the main successes of this project would be for members of the hills community to be able to access allied health care and integrate a headspace centre for youth mental health.

“One of the areas I’m very passionate about is mental health in young people,” he said.

Deputy Premier James Merlino echoed Mr Woods' comments and added that incorporating Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relief Service (DRERS) into the hub would provide great benefits.

“I’m very excited about this project for DRERS and the community engagement it will bring,” he said.

Yarra Ranges Mayor Jason Callanan said the building itself would bring great potential for community growth.

“Making healthcare accessible is extremely important and valuable,” he said.

The project is estimated to create 57 construction jobs and 26 ongoing jobs once built for members of the local community, and will take about two years to complete.

A BELGRAVE woman will face court in May after being arrested for three burglaries that occurred over the Labour Day long weekend.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Melanie Woods said on Wednesday 16 March, police arrested a 33-yearold Belgrave woman.

The woman was charged with three burglaries over the Labour Day long weekend in Upwey and Tecoma.

“As a result of the arrest, we believe that most, if not all, of the property has been recovered and is to be returned to their owners,” Det Sgt. The woman was bailed to appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 3 May.

POLICE are reminding residents to be wary of thieves over the Easter long weekend, with opportunistic thefts on the rise.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant, Melanie Woods, said that police were preparing for an increase in burglaries over the Easter long weekend.

She said that opportunistic thefts of power tools and items from cars increased over long weekends, and that there had been a “series” of thefts around the Chirnside Park area.

“It’s generally unlocked vehicles,” Det Sgt Woods said.

She said that cars and houses should be locked when possible, and that power tools are kept secured and engraved, and that owners should re-

Briefly WOULD-BE burglars were scared off from a Monbulk business early on Monday morning, and police are searching for information.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Melanie Woods said that about 4am on Monday 21 March, Alpine Mowers on Main Road, Monbulk, was broken into.

Det Sgt Woods said the would-be thieves triggered an alarm and fled the scene.

Police are still investigating the theft, and Det Sgt Woods said a light-coloured Holden Commodore was seen leaving the area.

A DRIVER had to be cut out of their car over the weekend, after a head-on collision near Emerald on Saturday. Emerald police Senior Constable, John Andrews, said about 5.30pm on Saturday 19 March, police were called out to a head-on crash on the Beaconsfield-Emerald Road.

Sen Const Andrews said it was believed that one of the cars involved was travelling on the wrong side of the road, before hitting a car coming from the other direction.

He said the SES had to cut the driver out of one of the vehicles, and that the driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries - the other vehicle’s driver was uninjured.

Hills inspires children’s book

By PETER DOUGLAS HILLS-BASED author Pauline Hosking’s children’s novel ‘Cinnamon Stevens - Crime Buster’ will be launched locally next month.

The launch will take place at Belgrave Library on Saturday, 9 April, from 10.30am to 12noon; and in Emerald during the PAVE Festival on Wednesday, 13 April, at the Emerald Secondary College library.

With illustrations by Kat Chadwick, the fun adventure story is aimed at readers aged 10 years and over.

When developing the story, Hosking said the Hills proved much inspiration.

“Cinnamon lives in an imaginary township called Mount Dandenong, which the author explains is a mixture of many Hills locations,” she said.

“The place has an aquatic centre and skateboard park (like Monbulk) and an impressive police station (like Emerald).”

Hosking said her character, Cinnamon, who is 12, dreams of becoming a super sleuth.

“She gets her chance when a classmate disappears during a school camp on Phillip Island,” she said.

Letters Bridge too far I HAVE again been stopped at a notorious bridge in Cockatoo due to another accident.

This bridge is located on Pakenham Road and Alexander Avenue (near Viewhill Road) and is a frightening bridge to drive on.

Firstly, it is narrow.

Secondly, it is on a bend and, thirdly, I unfortunately was involved in a serious accident there and I am still carrying the legacy of this.

There has been a fatal accident and numerous minor accidents.

There are logging trucks and quarry trucks driving on this road 24/7 and some do take up more than their side of the road.

When heading to Pakenham, you approach this bridge blindly and sometimes have to brake heavily as a truck is taking up three-quar-

ters of the bridge.

If you are heading towards Cockatoo, you pray no truck is coming around the bend when you are on the bridge - very scary as they are extremely close.

I have been sending emails to VicRoads to see if a sign can be erected at both entrances to the bridge, stating - ‘caution narrow bridge and turning traffic’ - or similar wording.

I am hoping residents can also send emails, hoping that if more people complain we may get a sign?

Cockatoo’s population has grown substantially, meaning more traffic on roads that are narrow and dangerous at times.

A warning sign would also be advantageous for tourists so they know of the danger ahead.

Puffing Billy feedback sought PUFFING Billy’s future is in the hands of the community as the Emerald Tourist Railway Board seeks feedback from the community on the strategic master plan for the railway.

The board will be holding community information and consultation sessions to get feedback from the community on future investment opportunities.

The master plan for the future development of Puffing Billy will include potential de-

velopments such as visitor accommodation as part of Puffing Billy, enhancements to railway precincts, and increasing railway infrastructure.

The board has cited increased visitation to the historic railway as the reason for investigating development and upgrades.

The public information sessions are designed to give community members a chance to have their voices heard on the proposed developments before the strategic plan is finalised.

The two-hour information sessions will run for two hours

across three locations on Saturday 9 April.

Members of the Emerald Tourist Railway Board and Tract Consultants will be present from 9am to 11am at the Belgrave Masonic Hall, from 12pm to 2pm at the Emerald Hall and from 3pm to 5pm at the Puffing Billy Gembrook Station.

The draft development plans will be accessible for public comment for two weeks on the Puffing Billy Railway website after the community information sessions have concluded.

$20m for new Angliss

DEPUTY Premier and parliamentary member for Monbulk James Merlino attended the Angliss Hospital on Monday 21 March to unveil the plans for the hospital’s new development.

The $20 million expansion of Angliss Hospital will go to tender for construction in May with the project scheduled to begin in July this year and be complete by the middle of 2019.

The expansion will see a new fourth floor added to the hospital, housing a 14-bed intensive care unit.

Angliss Hospital’s chief of clinical and site operations Ben Kelly said the expansion would allow the hospital to provide quality healthcare to patients that is close to home.

“This will improve the flexibility and capability of the hospital and will mean fewer patients will need to be transferred to hospitals like Box Hill,” Mr Kelly said.

The development will also see the rest of the hospital upgraded to be bought up-to-date with other Eastern Health hospitals.

Included in the development will be six new short stay beds to compliment the emergency department that was upgraded in 2004.

“Eastern Health sees 150,000 people a year present at emergency and Angliss hospital accounts for 40,000 of these short stay patients.”

The upgrade will also see the paediatrics department refurbished and capacity for underaged patients increased from four to eight.

Mr Merlino said improving the Angliss hospital would mean members of the community would have the healthcare

they needed where they needed it.

“This is a very important commitment and I’m just delighted to see it happening,” he said.

“Hospitals like the Angliss need continual investment because people need this healthcare near to where they live.”

Specialist healthcare architects Silver Thomas Hanley have designed the hospital development to blend with the natural surroundings of the Dandenong Ranges.

CREPE RECIPE Makes 12 Ingredients: 1 cup of plain flour 2 teaspoons of sugar 240ml milk 2 eggs 200ml cream 50ml milk 200g dark chocolate 20g cocoa powder Raspberries Strawberries Method: CREPE BATTER 1. Sift the plain flour into a bowl.

2. Add the sugar, milk and eggs.

3. Stir until the batter is free of any lumps and smooth.

4. Place a crepe pan or frypan over a medium heat and brush with some melted butter.

5. Once hot enough, pour in approximately a ladle of batter to the pan. Turning it as you go to get an even coat of batter.

6. Cook crepe for 1 minute either side using a metal spatula to turn.

7. Transfer to a plate and cover with foil to help keep them warm while cooking the rest.

8. To assemble fold the crepes in half and then in half again.

Zero waste to tasty vegies A big chunk of pumpkin

By KATH GANNAWAY WOORI Community House manager, Sonya Mazar, has a simple criteria for the success of their community vegetable gardens.

“I just love it when I see schoolkids walking past pick a couple of snow peas, or tomatoes and just eat them fresh from the garden,” she says.

The garden is a series of crates between the car park and the footpath, planted out with vegetables and herbs.

It’s a permanent display of the innovative approach the house has to sustainable gardening for everyone that includes a zero waste, minimal water and maximum input from nature’s helpers - the worms, chewing insects, microbes and aerobic bacteria.

Their secret weapon in establishing the model is local inventor and garden guru, Mike Morrison.

His integrated life-cycle food management system includes recycling cardboard packaging and coffee grounds (remember all those cafes in the Yarra Valley!), repurposing cardboard and plastic coffee cups and composting right next to the plants with a re-usable ‘compost hive’.

At Woori, the gardens thrive on ‘donations’ from the local shops and businesses who feed their food scraps, teabags and paper into the hives.

Alowyn’s Prue Van de Linde said they purchased seeds in October last year and put together growing packs for sale to the public. Seeds were also sold through the local Hoogies Hardware.

Mia, 9, has been nurturing her pumpkin from seed to flower to this beautiful, orange specimen since late last year, and can’t wait to take it along for the competition.

Ms Van de Linde said it was time for the pumpkins to come home.

Underground House digs deep

AFTER the 2009 bushfires destroyed their Steels Creek home, Edd and Amanda Williams set to work creating a masterpiece - an underground house where practicality and sustainability are at the forefront.

The Underground House is located deep in Steels Creek, down winding dirt roads and a long driveway, far away from mobile phone reception.

Coming around the corner, the house’s chimneys and Solatubes poke out of a hill - the front, north-facing side of the house, meanwhile, sits forward and unobscured.

Behind a set of double-glazed windows is a small (and hot) room full of tropical plants, and another set of double-glazed windows that leads to the kitchen and into the house proper.

Edd, seated in an armchair in the cool house - it’s 30 degrees outside, and significantly hotter in the room with the plants - explained that the room is designed to help regulate the heat in the underground house.

“We open this up in winter, in the day time, and the heat from there comes in here, and at night we close it up,” he said.

“This time of the year, when it’s really hot outside, we keep these closed all day, and we open up at night - by moving these doors open and shut at different times of the day, you control the temperature inside the house.”

He said the house was designed by their son, Soft Loud House Architects’ Alvyn Williams, after the family’s house was burnt down during the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires.

Amanda said the decision to go underground was made during the long drought, where water was scarce and the panic of the fire season made the area like a “war zone”.

“I had a ‘what would I do?’ scenario - if I was alive, and my family was alive, but the house was burnt,” she said.

“In that case, I said, well, next time, I’ll build underground - instead of spending every summer and every time I went shopping watching the horizon.”

The attention to detail in the finished house shows - the couple said the width of the kitchen was designed so that, in winter, the sun hits the back wall.

In summer, the light barely makes it past the windows.

Edd said the house was built “like a carpark”, with solid concrete for the walls and roof.

This, he said, gives the house a thermal mass which uses the soil around the house to cool and heat the house naturally.

Vents running from the surface provide cool air, even on warmer days.

The house is powered by solar panels, which return so much power to the grid that money from energy companies offset the price of buying wood for the stove and gas for an underground cylinder.

When it comes to bushfire safety, the house is well-equipped with a

moat running around the property, a large dam nearby, fire-resistant materials and perspex covering the Solatubes that bring light to the rear rooms of the house.

The area around the house is cleared to stop the approach of fire and a small ‘cave’ is attached to the house as an escape from radiant heat.

Another benefit of being underground, Edd said, is that the house is also sound-proofed, and maintenance is as simple as walking outside and up the hill.

“If people next door have a party, we don’t even know,” he said.

“They say ‘we hope we weren’t too noisy last night’, and we say ‘what?’”

Amanda said that underground houses were “slightly more expensive” to build than regular houses in the beginning and that sites needed to be suited to the project, such as having a slope and a north-facing area for the frontage.

“A lot of people come into the ‘I wish’ or ‘idealistic’, some people come into the category of the older people ‘I don’t know how you live in a house that’s so different’,” she said.

“I have had parents of students that have been through the program contact me to say their child is excelling in other aspects of their life because of the confidence they have gained.”

In partnership with the Yarra Ranges Shire Council, Ms Brewer has also developed and out-of-school program called Lantern League.

Lantern League offers students from all schools and backgrounds the chance to learn Yellow Lantern skills outside a school environment with a supportive audience of peers.

“I want to give all kids the chance to completely be themselves and so much more,” Ms Brewer said.

AN Avonsleigh local has developed a program for teaching public speaking and confidence to primary school students, and it’s gone global.

Nathalie Brewer first developed the Yellow Lantern program for Menzies Creek Primary School four years ago, and since then the program has exploded.

“We’ve got the program operating here in the Yarra Ranges, four programs operating in Sydney, one is South Australia, one in Romania and we are about to launch in Buenos Aires,” Ms Brewer said.

Ms Brewer, who has a background in psychology and yoga instruction, spent the previous 10 years as a life and speaking coach and saw an opportunity for change.

“We’ve been teaching public speaking the same way for 300 year, but it’s still the num-

ber one recorded fear among adults,” she said.

“Obviously, we have been doing something wrong, and it’s just not working.”

The Yellow Lantern program uses self-discipline techniques drawn from yoga, tai chi, and Kung-Fu to teach children confidence when speaking publicly.

Ms Brewer said the program used public speaking as a basis for more wide reaching selfconfidence lessons that students took with them into other aspects of their life.

“Public speaking is the perfect vessel for self-belief because you have to have a self connection,” she said.

“This program gives students full permission to be themselves and creates a reconnection to their own personalities to help them work through their fears.”

Facebook page last week, reminding residents to change the batteries in their alarm, and to keep them well-maintained and safe, at the end of daylight savings on Sunday 3 April.

The brigade said that smoke alarms should be dusted monthly, replaced every 10 years and that batteries should be replaced at the end of every daylight savings period.

The reminder comes as part of the Change Your Clock, Change Your Smoke Alarm Battery campaign, so that when residents change their clocks, they remember to get new batteries for their smoke alarm.

The CFA’s website said alarms could be dusted with vacuum cleaner attachments, and should be tested once a month - working alarms should produce four loud beeps when pressed.

“Waiting until the smoke alarm beeps before you change the battery is too late - this indicates that the battery is already flat, and your family is not protected,” the website read.

“Change your smoke alarm battery every year.”

Smoke alarms are used to wake up occupants of houses when smoke fills the air. When hearing an alarm, getting down low under the smoke and crawling to safety is important.

“House fires occur more frequently during the winter months, and making sure you go into winter with a working smoke alarm makes good sense,” the CFA website said.

Residents who are hearing impaired can purchase special smoke alarms that feature a flashing strobe light and a vibrating pad, which can be put under pillows to alert them.

Knights rule roost

By ISN HARLEY THE Knoxfield Knights have won the 2015-'16 Norm Reeves Shield after taking full advantage of the new finals format, after a defeat in the first week of the finals.

Knoxfield wrapped up the game, dismissing The Basin for 174 in pursuit of 208, with Tom Boxell winning the Stephen Lee Medal for best afield in the grand final.

Scott McKenzie ensured the Bears chase did not get off to a flyer, removing Jake Best and Danny Rundle in the space of two balls with the score on 21.

Josh Lee survived a chance two balls later before McKenzie struck again to have The Basin 3/25 and Lee gone for 1.

Opener Christopher Wilson was joined by Jayden Turcinovic and the pair pushed the score to 50 before

Luke Scanlan struck, removing Wilson for 19.

Turcinovic (45) and Ron Heskes tried to get the innings back on track with a partnership of 46; unfortunately, both fell with the score on 97.

Scott Vozzo and Connor Edwards followed soon after and The Bears had lost 4/8 to be reeling at 8/105.

Steve Ryan (20) and Matt Heskes (39) managed to drive the score closer to the target, but it was too little too late for The Bears, their innings coming to a close at 174 off 71 overs.

Scanlan took five wickets (5/43 off 20) to back up the opening performance of Scott McKenzie 3/52.

Knoxfield won the toss and elected to bat on day one and lost Ben Gerloff with the score on 27 and Kyle Povah (30) at 57, but it was the double strike at 67 that saw Luke Scanlan and Trentin Scholfield back in the shed that had

the Knoxfield innings in trouble.

Tom Boxell managed to get the Knights' innings on track despite the loss of Zac Wilson.

Matt Train joined Boxell and got the score to 132 before Boxell was out LBW to Josh Lee for a well-compiled 50.

Matt Train then guided the tail to a score of 208 before he was the last man out for 54.

The Basin was well served by Scott Vozzo who took 4/55 off 28 overs including the key wicket of Scanlan, and Matthew Heskes 3/60 off 30 overs.

Turcinovic kept well all day, snaring two stumpings including the final wicket of Train.

In the DeCoite Shield game between Upper Ferntree Gully and Lysterfield, no play was possible on day one with standing water surrounding

the wicket despite the best efforts of both sides to get the ground fit for play.

Day two saw Upper Gully win the toss and elect to bat with skipper Peter Dunlop and Alistair Lord opening the innings.

Lord was removed with the score on 15.

The Kings then lost Guy Balmford(15) with the score on 53 and Craig Bridle (13) at 84.

Dunlop continued to drive the score on and with Shane Luck (33) put on a 65-run partnership before Luck was dismissed with the score on 149.

The Kings looked to accelerate the scoring, and in doing so lost Dunlop for a well-compiled 86 making the score 5/169.

Wickets fell regularly in the chase for runs, but it was Jay “Sticks" Colee that ensured the innings finished with a

flourish at 8/212.

Lysterfield’s Stephen Kennedy (2/27) and Aiden Inglis (2/32) took their early wickets before Brad Paull (2/52) and Nathan Walsh (2/57) took the pace of the ball, trying to restrict the scoring.

Lysterfield will need to make the most of any opportunities to win this game, while the Kings will be looking to turn the screws and put pressure on the Beavers. Day 3 will be an interesting proposition indeed.

THE Under 14s Emerald cricket team, which was undefeated all season, has won the grand final against Pakenham Blue for season 2015-’16. The final score in the encounter was 7/147 Emerald to 6/112 for Pakenham. Team coach Glenn Tucker praised the efforts of his up and coming cricket stars. 151629

A steady start to day one, with many personal bests, finished with an avalanche of medals.

Congratulations to club coaches - Brendan Dixon, Malcolm Duncan, Graeme Woolridge, Jamie Strudley and Susan Taylor - for preparing their athletes to the results they have achieved this season.

Top qualifiers

By DENNIS FULLER EMERALD GOLF AFTER the Emerald Golf course copped 68ml of rain in two days, the members oozed in for a crack at qualifying for the annual 4BBB championship.

Pairs were assembled and the drizzle descended as the first players hit the ground sloshing.

The big shiny came out later and all was good apart from the golf of some.

Two teams amassed 46 points and the judges had to get out their slide rulers and two bits of string to split the teams.

After respectful and supposedly accurate computation, it was revealed that Peter Clowes and Seppy Krummenacher were the winners.

Jeff Marsh and Ken Sumsion were the unlucky pair but they still managed to pick up the cash for being second.

John Keys and Dave Aitken came in next with 44 points, followed by Graham White and Mark Starick and John Carvill and Mike Litchfield when both teams scored 43.

John Fisher was nearest the pin on the 4th, Jeff Marsh the 7th, Krummenacher the 12th, Ross Martin the 13th and Clowes rounded out a great day by taking the pro pin cash on the 18th.

The ladies event, as has been the custom lately, was a draw of unerring solidarity with Irene Cranston and Daisy Mackey finishing equal with Irene Scott and Brianna McCoy. Wednesday’s Opulently Fashionable Golf (OFG) was a stroke event over the first nine twice.

Graeme Fergus lapped up this idea when he stormed home to win with a nett 66.

John Piggott and Ken Hill both scored 67 while a gaggle of golfers including Ben Balfour, Bob Kennedy and Mike Litchfield all carded 68.

The draw for the 4BBB is Clowes and Krummenacher will play Hill and Glasscock; Marsh and Sumsion will play Morison and Jones; Aitken and Keys will play Crossley and Ecclestone; while White and Starick will face up to Carvill and Litchfield.

Motoring Double win for Sanders up North

THREE Bridges’ Daniel ‘Chucky’ Sanders finally broke through for his first ever overall outright victory in the two opening rounds of the Australian Off-Road Championship (AORC) last weekend at Kilkivan, 224 kilometres north of Brisbane.

Round one on Saturday marked Sanders’s 35th AORC race start in his career, which saw the KTM Off-Road Team young gun claim the outright win beating Lachlan Stanford by 4.197sec in a six-lap sprint style format race.

In testing conditions - a rough and rocky track and having to battle against the 35-plus degree heat - Sanders, who finished fourth in last year’s outright championship said it was definitely a tough day.

“I knew that it was going to be the same sorts of tracks as last year, so I knew what to expect,” said Sanders who finished with a total time of 46min00.731sec.

“To get my first outright win done and dusted has been a goal of mine which I wanted to do this season. This a real big confidence booster leading

into tomorrow.”

The 21-year-old kept his winning performance going into the second round on Sunday, also another sprint style race. However he started off a bit slow in the first few sprints after trying to find the correct lines and get into a rhythm.

It wasn’t until the fifth run that Sanders finally took command of the pack, taking the lead away from New South Wales’ Josh Green, the early pace setter.

Green threw everything he had at Sanders in the last sprint, but it wasn’t quite enough, and Sanders got the nod by .999sec.

Not only was Sanders victorious in the outright class, but he took the spoils the E3 category (300cc-500cc) as well.

“It’s a great feeling to be able to come here this weekend and walk away with two outright round wins,” Sanders told the Upper Yarra Mail straight after the race.

“All the hard work and training during the off-season is paying off. I can’t thank my team enough for supplying me with the best KTM 300EXC to go out there and race with. It’s a team effort, so this is their vic-

tory as much as it is mine.”

Sanders explained that the first two rounds last weekend had given him a big “confidence booster” heading into round three and four, which will take place at Portland in NSW on 9-10 April.

While Sanders may have snared the opening two rounds, he knows he has a long 2016 season ahead of him with another 10 rounds to go, and he says he still has to keep training to be at the peak of his game.

“It’s a nice feeling to win, but we still have to keep pushing as hard as possible and readjust our goals during the course of the year,” he said.

“I’ll keep training as hard as I can when I get back home and look towards the next two rounds at the beginning of April and we’ll see what we can do there.

“This championship looks like it could be one of the hardest yet I dare say.”

Updated Kluger on show in New York A SIGNIFICANTLY upgraded version of Toyota’s seven-seat Kluger SUV is set to be previewed at this year’s New York International Auto Show, running from 25 March to 3 April.
