Athol Road Primary held a multicultural day on Tuesday 15 March to mark Cultural Diversity Week, which ran from 12 to 20 March.

A WHOLESALE fresh produce market has been proposed in Bangholme’s green wedge to tap into the south-east’s vast farming region but has already sown dissent among conservationists.

Dandyfresh CEO Rod Kerley said the $15 million-plus project in the pad-

docks at 84 Harwood Road will create about 200 jobs.

It would also be attractive to the Gippsland region’s farmers and florists trekking their products across town to Epping market.

“We’re trying to make it easier for the retailer and for the grower,” Mr Kerley said.

Street is the focus

By Cam Lucadou-Wells "APEX Street, Dandenong North, seems a world away from the brawls, car jackings and armed robberies linked to a street gang of the same name.

This tidy, quiet neighbourhood has few problems, apart from a household's termite outbreak and a general water outage.

Residents who spoke to Star News are puzzled how the Apex Gang emerged.

The first they'd heard of the gang - and the link with their address - were news reports of the affrays that marred Moomba on 12 March.

Seyjohn Gunaratna said he hadn't detected any "trouble" since he moved into the street six years ago. He'd once heard of a shop break-in several blocks away.

Danni Tabbaa was also oblivious to the street's crime connection. She was particularly annoyed by the publicity's timing, just as her family are trying to sell their unit.

"Hopefully our buyers don't watch the news," she said.

Greater Dandenong councillor John Kelly said residents - as well as a lot of good people in African communities - had been unfairly tarnished by

It reminded Cr Kelly of the longgone though still notorious 3175 gang, which named itself after Dandenong's postcode.

"Generally (Apex Street) is a nice little street and the people there are good people.

"As residents we’re sick and tired of

their brutality regardless of their nationalities and ages.' Cr Kelly said one incident like the brawl could undo the council's hard work to build a positive reputation for "our city".

"If one is found guilty of these crimes they should pay the price for their action - heavier jail terms and even deportation."

Police say the gang began with young South Sudanese people in Dandenong.

Its members have been charged with a fatal hit and run, car jackings, armed robberies and home burglaries in recent months.

A mass of arrests landed the gang's ringleaders in Parkville juvenile detention late last year.

They have since been released and the spates of car thefts and burglaries have started again.

In a blog on 16 March, Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton said Apex broadened when it merged with another gang; its members crossed several ethnic groups.

Most members were born in Australia.

"But if people think their police are going soft on gangs because they are of one ethnic background or another, they are wrong."

Warren Eames, a Dandenong- based services director at YSAS, said they should face the consequences but “simply washing our hands of the problem is short-sighted”.

“I would hope our first instinct is taking responsibility collectively as a community for those young people to find a positive path.

“Surely our community can cope with supporting those young people.”

The Apex Gang, whose members are reportedly as young as 12 and from a range of ethnic backgrounds, have been linked to spates of aggravated burglaries, armed robberies, car thefts and an alleged culpable driving incident.

Violent brawls between Apex and Islander 23 gangs marred Moomba in Melbourne’s CBD on 12 March.

The affrays prompted Premier Daniel Andrews to declare: “It does not matter who you are, your circumstances, your background, if you break the law you feel the full force of the law.”

YSAS helps young people across a range of cultural backgrounds get back on track, including Apex members and others before the courts.

Mr Eames describes the recent “against the odds” success story of a young asylum seeker in Melbourne’s south-east, who was “struggling” with similar issues.

The youth was nursed through a year of schooling with the help of a support network including YSAS. He graduated as “student of the year” at his high school.

Mr Eames said that there was often complex health and social issues underlying their clients.

“There’s no question when there’s that type of affray (during Moomba) and offending it has absolutely got to be policed.

“But the bigger challenge for the community is how we understand the root cause of that sort

“Our group is wanting to keep the green wedge’s rural character, the views and the openness.

“This (proposal) is going to be a large scale commercial activity and inconsistent with that.

“There’s a lot of hurdles to jump.”

The site is owned by developer Intrapac’s subsidiary Fendenbrook.

Intrapac launched a failed bid to the state’s Urban Growth Boundary Anomalies Advisory Committee for the parcel to be rezoned industrial in 2012.

Mr Kerley had hoped to launch the concept at the Logis industrial estate in Dandenong South five years ago.

It was “killed” by the then state government which did not want an equal-sized competitor to the under-construction Epping market.

Mr Kerley said the Bangholme proposal has “quite a high level of support” among politicians.

“They don’t have a problem with a private market and the fact it will create jobs in Dandenong.

“As Epping has developed the justification for doing the facility in Dandenong still stacks up when you consider the amount of food produced in Gippsland and the Mornington Peninsula.”

There had also been discussions with local TAFE network Chisholm Institute about training opportunities such as food handling, retail and production.

The market would also have export sales potential for local growers, he said.

“I remember thinking at the time Haider moved behind my head that he was going to kill me.

“I had known of a fatwa from a few days before suggesting that AFP and military should be killed and beheaded. All of that went through my mind as I was on the ground.”

Had a Victoria Police detective not shot the attacker “I am sure that Haider would have cut my throat and cut my head off”, Officer B stated.

That detective “certainly saved my life”.

Officer B was taken to The Alfred hospital with a stab wound to the centre of his chest, requiring surgery to his liver. His shoulder muscle had been cut in half by two other stabs and was sewn together.

The officer was also cut over his left eye and down a side of his face.

“I don’t think we could have done anything else than what we did,” his statement said.

“There was just not any time to react.”

Cops recall aftermath of terror attack A FEDERAL agent has described to a coronial inquest how he discovered teenager Numan Haider was shot in the head in front of Endeavour Hills police station .

Officer C, who can’t be identified, told the Coroners’ Court hearing on 16 March that two colleagues in a joint counter-terrorism taskforce agreed to meet Haider in the car park on the evening of the shooting.

One of those members - a federal agent ‘Officer B’ - returned into the station’s foyer soon after.

Officer C saw from a monitor inside the station that the agent was distressed, and ran to the foyer with another federal agent.

In the foyer, he saw a large gash on the side of Officer B’s head and asked a female citizen to phone triple zero.

Officer B said something to the effect of “he’s been shot”, Officer C stated to the inquest.

Another federal agent, Officer D, stated to the inquest that he also ran to Officer B in the foyer and

the fatal shot, indicated that his shaking, cut left arm had been stabbed by Haider.

Haider had a large “trauma wound” to his head and appeared dead, Officer C stated.

The JCTT had allegedly requested the meeting with Haider to talk about the teen yelling and waving an Islamist banner in Dandenong Plaza five days earlier.

A FEDERAL Police agent has told a coronial inquest that he was certain that teenage terror suspect Numan Haider was “going to cut my head off”.

In his witness statement, Officer B told the Coroners’ Court on 17 March that Haider had attacked him soon after they met and shook hands outside Endeavour Hills police station on 23 September 2014.

The agent had been looking inside a silver car that Haider arrived in when his Victoria Police colleague asked Haider to empty his pockets.

Officer B heard Haider question why that had to be done, and then heard a yell. When the officer looked up, he saw Haider holding a knife.

“In a split second he was on me.”

Then Officer B “shut down”, according to his statement.

He had no audio perception, he couldn’t tell if he was being stabbed or slashed and in what order things were happening.

He recalled his eye bled heavily, the blood ran down his face but he didn’t feel pain. Haider then

“We didn’t want to intimidate Numan by having all four of us in the car park,” Officer C said. “We wanted a low key, softly-softly approach, in particular given that we didn’t have the power or the basis to arrest Numan.”

TERRORISM expert Greg Barton is informed by 27 years’ expertise in Islamic political thought and movements.

He had no simple, easy answer on why teenager Numan Haider was apparently radicalised and stabbed two police officers before he was fatally shot in front of Endeavour Hills police station on 23 September 2014.

“There’s a risk in everything we do, including not doing something,” he said.

Professor Barton appeared at Haider’s coronial inquest at the County Court on 11 March which is examining Haider’s demise and how to snap susceptible teen males from the Islamic State (IS) spell.

Rachel Ellyard, counsel assisting the coroner, posed to Professor Barton that this might not have happened had Haider not been aware of police interest in him.

What if his room had not been searched by police without his permission on the day of the attack or what if police had not been intent on meeting him that same day, she asked.

Maybe this “pushed” Haider into doing something he “might not have been prepared to do”, Ms Ellyard said.

Professor Barton told presiding coroner John Olle that police tried to do the right thing. They followed up on something they were con-

cerned about.

“They did not rush into arrest, did not prejudge,” he said.

“It was well intentioned and appropriate.”

But “knowing what we know now” perhaps police could do things differently, he said, such as eschewing uniforms and making meetings with at-risk teens as low-key as possible.

Since 9/11, Professor Barton’s research has necessarily focused more on extremism.

Eighteen-year-old Haider was allegedly told by his family and ASIO officers to quit visiting AlFurqan Islamic Centre bookshop in Springvale South and not to associate with a certain friend who attended Al-Furqan.

Al-Furqan was formed by Sheik Harun Mehicevic who had earlier been thrown out of a Bosnian mosque in Noble Park.

Professor Barton said a “troubled” Haider appeared to be part of a circle of friends who gathered at the bookstore, perhaps out of “youthful rebellion”.

On one hand it was a “positive influence”, a place of belonging for young men, Professor Barton said.

On the other, it was a type of secretive, religious cult that was suspicious of all outside and had “malign elements”.

Haider’s family had fled as refugees from the Taliban in Afghani-

stan more than a decade earlier.

Yet Haider’s Facebook post on 18 September 2014 - less than a week before his demise - echoed ISstyle fundamentalism.

Above it was a photo of Haider in camouflage, a balaclava and holding a Shahada banner.

A commenter on the post asked if Haider was going to kill Shias too.

“Don’t worry bro I’m not going to kill you,” Haider replied.

The timing was telling. It was posted just hours after a confrontation with police at Dandenong Plaza in which Haider raved and waved an Islamic flag.

On the same day, large “dramatic” counter-terrorist raids were launched in Sydney and Brisbane after an intercepted call sparked fears of a terror attack.

The raids, filmed by news crews, presented as “heavy handed”, Professor Barton said.

On Facebook, Haider described the AFP as declaring “war on Muslims”, warning his “brothers” at Furqan and Hallam mosques that they could be the next raid targets.

“To ASIO and AFP go f*** yourself you dogs,” he posted. He was showing “solidarity” with IS or, at the least, with extremists, Professor Barton said.

Holy hill was home for town's churches IN 1936 we watched Dr Hart’s home Benga being built on land in McCrae Street.

That land backed onto Laurel Lodge in Langhorne Street.

It was the only vacant piece of land remaining in the block bounded by McCrae, Langhorne, Foster and Wilson streets and an area originally referred to as Church Hill because it contained St James Anglican Church, St Mary’s Catholic Church and on the corner of Foster Street and Langhorne Street opposite St Mary’s original church, the Presbyterian (Scott’s) Church.

The front of the brick Presbyterian Church faced Langhorne Street.

A weatherboard hall ran across the back of the church and was entered from Foster Street.

The church tennis courts were on the corner of Foster Street and Pultney Street and the tiled-roof weatherboard manse sat on the hillside next to the tennis courts in Pultney Street facing the park.

Today the whole area where the brick church, the hall and the tennis courts were now contains the new Metropolitan Law Courts.

The only other house between the manse and the unmade end of Wilson Street was a timber house set high on the grassy-banked track of Pultney Street.

It was a mixture in style between Victorian and Georgian with later additions of Federation.

It had a long corner verandah, an iron roof and fancy rendered chimneys and similar columns along the verandah.

Miss Taylor and her sister lived there. The front wire fence was com-

pletely engulfed by a variegated privet hedge.

We found that house to be a good place to flog school raffle and concert tickets and we were often sent there by the nuns to get bunches of Easter daisies for decorating St Mary’s Church for the Easter ceremonies.

The rest of the land in Pultney Street east of Foster Street was vacant and adjoined the police property in Wilson and Langhorne streets.

On the angled corner of Pultney Street, facing into Lonsdale Street, was the grocery shop of Mr Evans, one of the first places we would go for tobacco for dad and Uncle Gordon.

Next door to Mr Evans was Kelly’s motor and carriage paint shop.

Kelly’s carried out the painting and sign writing on vehicles from the coachbuilders in Walker Street across from the town hall.

They were skilled and their scroll

work and signage on the carriages and wagons was a work of art.

Today we would call them commercial artists or graphic designers.

I think there was originally a bootmaker in one of those shops on that corner which may have been part of the remains of Cobb and Co. The open brick drain had gone through part of their property.

On the Wilson Street end of the block that made up the area called Church Hill was the St James Anglican Church built in 1864.

Along with its associated buildings, it still remains today, plus a memorial porch which was added after World War II. Of the three churches on this block called Church Hill, St James is the only original one.

In 1857, seven years before the erection of St James Church, a fence was erected around the three acres on

the opposite corner of Langhorne and Wilson streets on which the original police camp was pitched.

A short time later a timber building was erected which included officers’ quarters, a watch-house and a lean-to used as a stable.

When we were kids the police station was still a weatherboard building and the home of the police sergeant.

The two-storey brick one came later. To the left of the police station stood the old handmade brick jail, stables and loft which still remain today and are heritage-listed.

On the end of the loft gable is a wooden door with a large beam cantilevered out from the wall above it.

On this beam hung a hook and pulley for hauling bales of straw and bags of chaff and oats into the loft storage area.

It was on this beam the big kids told us they hung crooks.

The City of Greater Dandenong has signed and sealed its agreement with Pratt Industries to build a one-stop youth shop on council land.

The council last week released plans for a two story, 510 squares building on land at the back of its Dandenong Municipal Offices in Clow Street.

The centre, described by council as a shopping mall of youth services, will include council-run youth services.

The council will provide health and medical services, the National Prevention of Youth Suicidal Program, education advice...

Don’s life of hope lives on

By CASEY NEILL PASTOR Don Cameron sewed a prevailing hope into the Dandenong community.

“That hope continues in a lot of people. He showed them that there is something bigger.”

These words from Shane Varcoe, Don’s friend of more than 10 years, joined an outpouring of grief and gratitude following the Cornerstone Contact Centre co-ordinator’s shock passing on Sunday 13 March.

His death at age 45 came just a month after doctors found fast-spreading cancers throughout his body.

“Both him and I are Christians and very strong in our faith,” Mr Varcoe said.

“It informed our heart for the community and our heart for people.

“This was not a job for Don. “This was a mission and one that was about people.”

Don devoted 25 years of his life to Cornerstone, becoming involved before the Dandenong outreach service even opened its doors.

“It wasn’t really an organisation. It was a movement,” Mr Varcoe said.

“It continually evolved. It always was inclusive.

“That’s the beauty about what Don’s done, is that it doesn’t end with Don. “The hope has been instilled not just in the people, but in the process.”

Former Cornerstone coordinator Pastor Max Walker remembers meeting a 20-yearold Don.

“I saw tremendous potential in him,” he said.

“I mentored him and fostered him up until I left Cornerstone in 2010.

“I earmarked him for the takeover when I left and he lived up to every expectation that I had.

“He had a real empathy for people. He always went the extra mile for them.

“He visited people in jail that no one else would go and see.”

Mr Walker said Don mentored many teenagers, some who were now Cornerstone volunteers.

“Anybody who came through the door, it didn’t matter what state they were in, he treated them with respect,” he said.

“I’m proud to be his friend and mentor.”

He said Don also had a mischievous sense of humour and was a good practical joker.

“We’ll miss his smile, his sense of humour, his love for the people of Dandenong,” he said.

The Cornerstone board said that Don invested his life in others and his legacy was profound.

The man likely to step into the co-ordinator role, Pastor Michael Eggleton, said Don was full of love and compassion.

“His example remains for all of us,” he said.

“He was always looking out for the homeless, for the needy, and was always ready to help them.”

The City of Casey and City of Greater Dandenong each paused for a minute during their Tuesday 15 March council meetings to reflect on Don’s contribution to the community.

Cr Jim Memeti said his endeavours to provide swags to the homeless must have saved many lives.

Cr John Kelly has looked after the plumbing at Cornerstone for several years and said Don was “a beautiful man”.

“We’re lucky that we had this man within our city,” he said.

Cr Matthew Kirwan said: “If only we could achieve so much in our lifetimes as he achieved in a short 45 years.”

Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said Don’s smile said it all - positive, caring and reassuring.

“He maintained those qualities even as he confronted the seriousness of his illness,” she said.

“I enjoyed a few Facebook exchanges with him last week and he was positive - positive about the future of Cornerstone and upbeat about his own journey.”

A memorial service to celebrate Don’s life will be held at Faith Christian Church, 307 Gladstone Road, Dandenong North, at 2pm on Wednesday 23 March.

Pastor is still watching over me LISA Yates has suffered more than her share of hard knocks - just about every one you could imagine.

Staunch supporters were rare at her many rocky points, but one was Cornerstone’s late pastor Don Cameron, the Dandenong South mum said.

Over the years he had written her letters of support to the Department of Housing, donated and delivered a bed, and was safe counsel when she was bashed by a former partner.

In one of his testimonies in 2013, he stuck up for her as she sought to move from a cramped one-room bed-sit to a larger home.

“She feels helpless as she can’t find another place to live,” Mr Cameron wrote.

“I am hoping that you will be able to help her find more suitable accommodation so she can return to her normal healthy self.”

Ms Yates’s partner Jason said he was able to get his life on track because of Mr Cameron’s unyielding support.

“I gave him a lot of bad attitude but he was always there to help,” Jason said.

‘Humiliating’ display

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A LONG-TERM parking permit holder says she has been “humiliated” by Greater Dandenong Council’s parking regime which forced her into court to have a fine dismissed.

Susan O’Neill has been a permit holder at Walker Street car park for the past 16 years.

Her latest $475 instalment was paid in September to cover the following six months.

In November she was issued an infringement notice for mistakenly placing an expired permit ticket on her car’s dash.

Ms O’Neill said she had accidentally left the correct ticket in her car’s glovebox.

She wrote to the council but it refused to withdraw the $91 fine even though Ms O’Neill had paid for a current permit.

She had transgressed once before when she forgot to display her valid permit three years ago.

On 26 February a Dandenong Magistrates’ Court judge threw the matter out and overturned the fine.

“It makes me wonder why the council would go all the way to court,” Ms O’Neill said.

“It’s a waste of court time. In the end it’s pretty humiliating for a person doing the right thing to have to go to court.

“Am I the only one that they’re doing it to?”

Greater Dandenong city planning director Jody Bosman said the council didn’t comment on specific

cases but said it was a condition that permit-holders displayed a valid permit at all times.

“If permit holders fail to comply with this requirement, they are in breach of their permit conditions and (the) council’s capacity to protect their entitlements is unnecessarily hampered.”

Mr Bosman said the council usually withdrew an infringement if the permit holder showed they had a valid permit.

“That courtesy is not generally extended to people who repeat that failure on subsequent occasions.

“Parking permits at the Walker Street car park are offered at significant discounts over daily rates and whilst purchasers have rights attached to their permits, they also have responsibilities.”

Council in bid to turn right into wrong

Greater Dandenong councillors will write to the Roads Minister seeking an urgent review of the bans at Foster and Lonsdale streets with a view to removing or modifying them.

Councillor John Kelly successfully moved a notice of motion on the issue at the Tuesday 15 March council meeting.

The letter will also include a request for a review of traffic and pedestrian movements along and across Foster Street between Lonsdale and McCrae streets and suitable traffic treatments.

“The officers have fought and gone into bat for

us for two or three years over this intersection,” Cr Kelly said.

“It certainly is frustrating.

“I hope the minister can take this on board.

“I hope that after all these years that we can get something to happen that will be of benefit to the community.”

Cr Kelly said his concern was with the rightturn ban from Foster into Lonsdale in the morning peak.

In the afternoon, the south-east bound queue extends beyond the pedestrian crossing in front of the Dandenong Civic Centre.

“When that occurs, the congestion blocks traffic from Walker Street turning into Lonsdale

Street, resulting in lengthy delays to all traffic, including buses,” Cr Kelly said.

“The queuing also interferes with pedestrians crossing at the pedestrian operated signals.”

To avoid this, Cr Kelly said the “green time” allocated to the south-east bound traffic on Lonsdale Street needed to be maximised.

But that means the cycle can’t accommodate a right-turn phase, he said, because the balance of the cycle time needs to be allocated to green for Foster Street.

“That is why VicRoads banned the right turns at PM peak,” Cr Kelly said.

“Apparently there is therefore no scope to alter this arrangement in the PM peak.”

Wellsprings of goodwill

By CASEY NEILL A DANDENONG support service for women has received a $50,000 boost.

Wellsprings for Women manager Veronica Hassett said the funding would go towards a new program called Productive Learning in Australia.

Ms Hassett said its aim was to address the barriers women from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds faced, provide locally made and culturally rich products for sale in the local community, and provide retail skills and training.

“This is a great opportunity for Wellsprings to work closely with local retail organisations,” she said.

Ms Hassett said Wellsprings would also refer participants into accredited courses.

Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams announced the funding which will be delivered through the Adult Community and Further Education (ACFE) Board’s Capacity and Innovation Grants.

“Wellsprings for Women provides invaluable support for locals in Dandenong,” she said.

“Their services provide locals with opportunities to get off the treadmill of unemployment and back on the footpath to work or further study.

TAKE a Swing for Charity this year raised close to $55,000 for State Schools’ Relief Fund (SSRF).

The organisation provides uniforms, clothing, shoes and other materials to children attending government schools.

The annual SEBN golf day was this year held on 22 February and over the past six years has raised more than $250,000.

Last year SSRF received $44,000 from the event which paid for school equipment and uniforms for 679 students from 17 local schools.

GREATER Dandenong will donate $10,000 to help Fiji recover from the worst cyclone in its history.

“We can all shine together,” guest speaker Simon McKeon told guests at the annual Wallara Dinner under the Stars on Thursday 17 March.

The evening started with canapes in the courtyard at Wallara’s Potter Street headquarters in front of the restored and heritage-listed Sword family home.

“Phil was taking me through this house and all of a sudden I realised it was a home I played in with a very dear friend 55 years ago,” Mr McKeon said.

Wallara executive officer Phil Hayes-Brown said the site was among the first to combine disability with aged care by also housing Wintringham.

“I remember standing here five years ago and it was dirt,” he said.

Dinner and entertainment at The Castle - where Wallara first started supporting adults with different abilities in 1959 - followed.

Wallara clients formed Waiting for the Bus last year after singing to pass the time while waiting for their bus home.

They dressed in bright ’70s clothing and wigs to perform ABBA’s Dancing Queen to rapturous applause.

Wallara clients showed off the public speaking skills they’d learnt through the Wallara Ambassador Program and several videos highlighted how the organisation was helping people with different abilities to live the life they chose.

“As soon as I saw the work Wallara was doing, my heart wanted to partner with this great organisation,” she said.

Mr McKeon said he’d encountered some not-for-profit groups that were past their prime, but Wallara was not one of them.

“I don’t see any sign that it’s wearing out past its use-by date,” he said.

“I have never come across a part of this organisation that isn’t what I call ‘best of breed’.

When then-Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced him as the 2011 Australian of the Year, Mr McKeon said his proud older sister Di Bulman shouted “yes!”

His divorcee parents started their life together in Dandenong, his mum’s daughter Di in tow.

Di, who has intellectual and physical challenges, reminisced about attending Girl Guide meetings at The Castle.

She told the Journal that she attended both the Dandy West and East schools during her childhood and later worked washing film in her father’s chemist shop, which was now a milk bar.

Mr McKeon remembered the town bourgeoning on market days and manufacturing giants lining Princes Highway.

“It really was the most beautiful place to grow up,” he said.

“Who can remember the Wedge Street pool?

“That was the highlight on a day like today.”

His parents were heavily involved in the community, often hurrying him through dinner so they could clear the table to make way for hospital plans or something else.

“My father helped to set up the Dandenong Club,” he said.

Mr McKeon said he didn’t like using the word ‘disability’.

“It connotes the idea of defects.

I just like thinking about ability what is possible,” he said.

A silent auction, live auction and raffle rounded out the night.

Square goes full circle HARMONY Square visitors took a step into cultures from around the globe on Wednesday 16 March.

The Harmony Festival: Step Into Our World supported Cultural Diversity Week, promoting community harmony, awareness, understanding and mutual respect for all people.

The festivities featured an international dress parade, multicultural concert, world games in the library, African beading, Chinese tea tasting, and friendship bracelet making.

Springvale Neighbourhood House organised the event in partnership with the City of Greater Dandenong, Monash Health, Victoria Police, Southern Migrant and Refugee Centre, South East Community Links and the Australian Department of Human Services.

DISTINCTIVE coins and $24,000 worth of the drug ice were among a recent Greater Dandenong Tasking Unit haul.

Officers executed a search warrant at an address in Princes Highway, Dandenong, on Monday 14 March.

They charged and bailed five people following the raid, which uncovered the methyl-amphetamine and a large quantity of stolen goods, including distinctive coins.

They arrested and charged a 28-year-old Springvale man with trafficking a drug of dependence, and a 36-year-old Springvale man with trafficking a drug of dependence, handling stolen goods and weapons offences.

They charged a 27-yearold man with handling stolen goods and possessing proceeds of crime, and two women, aged 37 and 27, with trafficking a drug of dependence, and handling stolen goods and weapons.

Heated crossing forum

But businesses are calling for plans to close the Dandenong South thoroughfare to be canned.

Arco Restaurant hosted an industry forum on the issue on Thursday 17 March.

Owner Lindsay Bull has been outspoken on the Level Crossing Removal Authority (LCRA) plan revealed late last month to close Abbotts Road and build an overpass connecting Remington Drive to Pound Road West.

He said the forum was quite heated.

“We got a pretty good turnout, it would have been over 100 people,” he said.

“Everyone was up in arms about the whole way it started.

“They gave options of how to fix it now.”

Mr Bull said four variations on overpasses and underpasses were presented - as well as the closure.

“That needs to be taken off the table,” he said.

He said he suspected a “hidden agenda” was driving that proposal and that one forum attendee asked an LCRA representative about the au-

“He gets paid on every crossing that gets removed or something done to it,” Mr Bull said.

“His opinion is going to be to fill his back pocket rather than what’s right.

“It’s political and all about the dollar-factor now.

“We need it done now and not six months to 12 months,” he said.

“One guy is trying to negotiate his lease now.

“He told them it’s all on hold until he knows what’s going to happen.

“Businesses can’t operate like that.”

Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said some of the options put forward would require land acquisition and that a high water table was providing challenges.

“I’m not invested in any one option.

The LCRA will say the same,” she said.

“This process did not start in the way any of us wish it had.

“We’ve now reset that process.

We’ve got everyone to the table and listening.”

Ms Williams said it was early days in the consultation process.

“We’re just putting what we think are the five options on the table and seeking feedback for those,” she said.

She said doorknocking would soon take place, along with studies and surveys, and that industry groups would come back together mid-year as part of stage two.

“Think about this as a step one of a much broader set of work that needs to be done around improving connectivity in Dandenong South,” she said.

“This isn’t the start, middle and end. This is one particular project that relates to that level crossing.

“What it does is shine a light on those other connectivity issues.”

She said further money to address other issues could become available in the future, and urged industry to work with her.

“All of that knowledge can actually be really well-applied to this process and beyond this process,” she said.

Resources offer secure career moves

By CASEY NEILL AUTOMOTIVE workers will be among the 20 people starting new jobs at a Dandenong South production facility.

Industry Minister Lily D’Ambrosio officially opened the new $5 million 3fold Resources site on Thursday 17 March.

She said it consolidated the company’s manufacturing, warehousing and project management under one roof.

Ms D’Ambrosio said 3fold Resources provided design, sourcing,

manufacturing, installation and ongoing support services and warehousing for store fit-outs with Wesfarmers among its high-profile clients.

She welcomed 3fold adding 20 workers to its 100-strong team, particularly those from the automotive industry.

“By hiring workers from the auto industry 3fold Resources will benefit from the expertise of these highly skilled local workers,” she said.

Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams encouraged manufacturing businesses in the region to apply for State Govern-

ment financial assistance to grow their businesses and create new jobs.

“3fold Resources is a great example of a thriving manufacturing business in Melbourne’s south-east,” she said.

The 3fold Resources managing director Peter Vanderzaag said the facility would integrate local manufacturing with importing materials, so major retail chains could deal with just one organisation.

“We have explored many options but have found the most appropriate supply chain is the one we are launching today,” he said.

“It allows our customers to take advantage of overseas cost benefits whilst having access to local manufacturing to meet specific design requirements and bespoke solutions.”

Mr Vanderzaag said the retail sector accounted for $292 billion of the Australian economy and that retailers were looking for a point of difference in their fit-outs and must keep up with global trends.

“So we have invested in a solution that will allow for unique retail environments to be implemented in a timely and cost-effective way,” he said.

Dandenong company in running for train delivery

By CASEY NEILL A TRAIN order boost could bolster jobs in Dandenong for years to come, industry insiders say.

The State Government announced on Tuesday 15 March that it would nearly double its high-capacity train order from 37 seven-carriage sets to 65.

Dandenong’s Bombardier Transportation is in the running to deliver the project, with Eureka Rail and Evolution Rail the competition and an announcement expected late this year.

Greater Dandenong Council’s business group manager Paul Kearsley said the announcement was a commitment to the local supply chains and would certainly assist in the transition from auto industry to other industries such as rail.

“We look forward to Bombardier being the successful tenderer at the end of the process,” he said.

“Council looks forward to participating in any way it can to assist Bombardier and the State Government to ensure manufacturing stays in Dandenong South and the region.”

Mr Kearsley said that Bombardier missing out on the contract was “not a matter that the region would really want to contemplate”.

“The facility at Bombardier is the only Australian-based true manufacturing assembling facility for trains,” he said.

“To lose that opportunity to expand its role within Victoria and Australia would be a really missed opportunity.

“Once you lose that facility, what you lose is all the skills.

“We would hope that the supply chain in the region would be able to assist either one of the two other parties.”

South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA) executive officer Adrian Boden said the order was a “continuation of the long-term approach so needed by the manufacturing community”.

“Obviously it would be hugely important to the area if the contract was awarded to Bombardier and that the current workforce was not only maintained but increased over time, as well as the considerable flow-on effect to the supply base,” he said.

“The 50 per cent minimum local content is already well established within Bombardier and I am sure that, with the increased purchase commitment, it will be that much easier for Bombardier to improve on that level.

“We can only hope that other State Governments recognise the opportunity to purchase their transport needs in Australia and support and sustain our industries with long-term commitments.”

Premier Daniel Andrews said the new trains would start arriving in 2018 and immediately reduce congestion on the Cranbourne Pakenham line, Melbourne’s busiest.

They will be longer and able to carry more people with each trip.

Thrills as blood spills

By JARROD POTTER DDCA TURF 1 GRAND FINAL REVIEW BEYOND extraordinary.

It’s a match without compare in local cricket history and nor will it ever be surpassed as the most thrilling end to the DDCA Turf 1 season.

The greatest finish a cricket season has seen unfolded at Keysborough as Springvale South (138 and 87) was beaten by Cranbourne (65 and 5/163) in a Turf 1 reverse-outright thriller.

It started horrendously for the minor premiers before the game as import spinner Malinga Bandara had his Supreme Court appeal quashed and his DDCA tribunal misconduct charge upheld.

It didn’t get better for the Bloods early on Saturday after losing Nathan King (8), Harry Staude (0) and Dylan Quirk (12) for next-to-nothing as Martin Kelly (3/24) and Steve Spoljaric (2/30) chipped away at the top order.

Craig Slocombe (21) went from belting the stuffing out of the attack to succumbing to Chasemore in a quickfire knock that left the side spinning at 4/71.

The initiative was left to Sri Lankan import Michael Vandort (58) who braced himself and held on.

In the end the Bloods managed to work their way into the clash through a remarkable lower order partnership.

Mitchell Forsyth (16) played out of his skin to hold on with Vandort as the duo added 26 for the seventh stand.

Vandort raised the bat for his 50 but soon fell to young leggie Cam Dinger (3/24) after an impressive 176-ball occupation of the crease while Forsyth carried on with the tail to add the final few drips to the Bloods’ bank of runs.

The fading light only renewed Springvale South’s hopes as the openers went on the warpath.

Lucas Ligt (4) set himself to see out the remaining overs and held on throughout the chaos unleashed by Armitage, Tim Ford (1/4) and Nathan King (0/6).

Craig Slocombe saved his ace for the last over of the day, though, bring-

ing on his young part-timer Brayden Sharp (1/0).

Sharp managed to flight a leftarm miracle, taking arguably the biggest wicket of his career to get rid of the dogged Ligt, caught brilliantly by King.

Spoljaric (20) and Stuart Plunkett (12) were left to see out the day but both would struggle early on day two.

Everything was primed for Armitage to begin a day two rampage as he shattered Cranbourne’s hopes ... or at

least everyone thought he did.

The sun baked the deck and Armitage flayed all and sundry.

Armitage seared through the Eagles to take a grand-final seven-for and give his side the first innings victory and what most people assumed would be the game as the last runs were squeezed from Cranbourne to get to 65.

Cranbourne, somewhat begrudgingly at first, returned to the crease to try for one last miracle. That miracle came in the form of young spinner Dinger (6/44).

In tandem with Chasemore (1/21), Dinger rattled through the Bloods’ attack and set the stage for a race to the finish.

When everyone else was getting ready to wave the white flag, Dinger picked off Nathan King (7) Dylan Quirk (12) and Harry Staude (9) then captured the prized wicket of Craig Slocombe (5).

With 27 overs or 10 wickets for Springvale South and the Twnety20esque chase of 161 for Cranbourne, not much hope was given for Cranbourne in the second innings and it started slowly through Stuart Plunkett (9) and Brayden Roscoe (16).

But that was all part of Spoljaric’s (61) master plan - saving himself and Chasemore (59no) for first and second drop to let the openers get the shine off the new ball.

It worked to plan as Spoljaric showed his calibre on the big stage yet again.

He was primed for another masterclass at the crease as Spoljaric began unloading on the tiring quicks.

Spoljaric thumped five sixes down the ground to send the Bloods scrambling to all points on the rope as King (0/60), Matt Wetering (0/13) and Armitage (1/58) copped a pasting off the Cranbourne champion.

But when he chopped on against Slocombe, the match took one last twist.

It left 49 to get off only six overs but that wasn’t a problem for Chasemore (59no) who lit up Keysborough with the second barrage of boundaries.

He was joined by miracle-man himself Dinger (10no) who slapped one of his first balls into the rope to cut the deficit to 18 runs off 20 balls.

Chasemore finished the job with a whopping six before sealing the deal with a four to start the celebrations.

Father-son rule Turf 3

By JARROD POTTER TURNING the Turf 3 grand final on its head were Buckley Ridges’ father-son combination Shane and Jono D’Rozario.

The elder D’Rozario is well-known in DDCA circles - having won on the last day in Turf 1 as well as claiming an Alan Wookey Medal in 2006/07.

But the DDCA champion admitted Sunday would be hard to top in his cricket highlights after he celebrated a Turf 3 senior premiership with his 14-year-old son as Buckley Ridges (188) defeated DDCA newcomers Beaconsfield (168).

With the cup under his arm and his son under the other, Shane could not have been happier celebrating the season’s end.

“Was great to see on this great occasion that will live long,” Shane D’Rozario said.

“It’s right up there with winning the Turf 1 flag if not better to share this with my young bloke, so I’m absolutely stoked.”

It could have been a different story without both generations of D’Rozario cricketers writing chapters in the Turf 3 history books over the weekend.

Arriving with the side in disarray on Saturday afternoon - Shane came to the crease at 6/69 and anchored the Buckley Ridges’ fight-back.

He picked the perfect time to get his top score in 2015/16, smashing 74 in tandem with Sojjad Ali (26) before starting a

partnership that he will never forget began to grow.

Jono D’Rozario (11) arrived at the crease at eighth drop and united with his dad to put on a memorable 50-run stand.

From one D’Rozario to another, it was Jono’s turn on Sunday to spin the match Buckley Ridges’ way.

The younger D’Rozario worked his way through Beaconsfield’s batting with a 21 sublime leg-spin overs.

He snared 5/56 - including the huge wickets of Brendan Johnson (0), Matt Golding (38) and Mario Perera (25).

“Fantastic mate, fantastic - proud as punch of him and this great club,” Shane D’Rozario said. “It’s been years in the making, but to captain the boys is one thing and to put on a 50-run partnership with the young bloke is awesome.

“For him to come out and get five wickets in the innings as well - words can’t describe it ... . I’m the happiest bloke going around at the moment.”

Jono was similarly speechless but wanted to thank his dad for everything he’s done for him on and off the field.

“Terrific, words can’t explain it,” Jono D’Rozario said. “It’s great - to win with these lads - it’s just awesome.

“Just want to thank dad for all the years basically and getting me through the hard times.”

Shane thanked Buckley Ridges and his family - his wife Michelle, son Jono and daughter Shania - for their love and support.

Dingoes leave Knights dented

By JARROD POTTER DDCA TURF 2 GRAND FINAL REVIEW THE Dingoes are on the march to the top grade after an emphatic victory in the Dandenong District Cricket Association’s Turf 2 grand final.

Minor premier Keysborough (116) narrowly avoided defeat last week after a reverse-outright triumph but it couldn’t overcome a determined Dingley (6/178) in the finale.

The Dingoes rolled the Knights cheaply on Saturday before hunting down the runs with hours to spare on Sunday to seal the club’s greatest victory yet in the association.

“Definitely thrilled - I just think the best thing about the win is the junior players from Dingley being involved in it,” Dingley captain Travis Sawers said.

“We had eight players who had gone through from juniors to seniors involved in the premiership and had a father-son involved in it as well.

“We also had even contribution from everyone each week - we don’t rely on individuals to perform to get success and we have a really strong balance.”

The Keysborough top order imploded against Dingley’s new ball specialist Andrew Dalby (4/30) as Dingley seared through the first four for a pittance.

“Liam is only a 15-year-old kid and for him to weather a storm from Yoshi (Yoshan Kumara) and Kella (Ruwanta Kellepotha) showed experience beyond his years.”

Dingley’s 19-year-old wicketkeeper Mark Fitch got to savour the moment alongside his dad Darren as the pair celebrated a rare father-son Turf 2 premiership.

It’s onwards and upwards to DDCA Turf 1 for the Dingoes and Sawers believes it puts the side on the map and can only help them develop further.

“It’s just fantastic for us as a club we’re a growing club and we know that Turf 1 basically gives us a chance to draw better players to the club to help develop the youth,” Sawers said.

“I guess it’s just a reward for selfbelief among the playing group who were tight on the field but also off the field and had a strong social culture that’s the most important thing with the side.”

It was Dingley’s first senior XI flag since the 2004/05 season in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association.

AT LAST: after living with the lumpen lines of previous Pajeros, the latest iteration of the large wagon from Mitsubishi has taken up looks more in character with that of a true sports utility vehicle.

While Mitsubishi says the Pajero Sport is the most technically advanced off-roader it has produced, it is the all-round look of the company’s new Dynamic Shield styling theme that is the most striking feature.

The Pajero Sport comes in three highly-specified versions - GLX, GLS and Exceed - starting at a competitive entry-level price of $45,000.

Powered by the Triton’s 2.4-litre MIVEC turbo-diesel engine, coupled to an eight-speed automatic transmission, the GLX, in true off-roader style, is fitted with the Super Select II 4WD system and Off-road Terrain Control System.

The GLS, at $48,500, takes on added comfort and convenience features such as dual-zone airconditioning, leather interior, rain-sensing wipers, dusk-sensing headlamps and electro-chromatic rear view mirror. Mitsubishi’s five-year warranty and fixed-price servicing apply to the new wagon.

I took advantage of the range-topping Exceed ($52,750), which goes the full Monty with the latest active safety measures and luxuries including heated front seats with power adjustment, rear DVD entertainment system and eight-speaker audio.

The word ‘striking’ does not do the Pajero Sport exterior justice.

Based on Challenger architecture, it’s a big wagon (almost five metres long) with sleek lines that make it look as if it is built for speed.

The sleek new Pajero Sport is unrecognizable from the lumbering looking wagon of old. panel and taillight. Integrated roof rails, side sill garnish and side step reinforce the bold SUV image and modern design 18-inch alloy wheels have premium quality written all over them.

Up front is Mitsubishi’s new Dynamic Shield styling theme - bumpers that wrap around the front from the left and right guards and are bordered by a bright silver garnish.

Chrome-trimmed grille bars run from the three-diamond Mitsubishi badge into the headlight accents, giving the Pajero Sport the latest front fascia design.

Talk about ‘bright lights, big city’, day or night the Pajero Sports announces its arrival with a front lighting set-up consisting of LED head-

lights dominated by super-hero size DRLs. Scary!

On a practical note, extensive wind-tunnel testing and computer modelling have produced a best-in-class drag coefficient of 0.04 Cd, while the smart front-end design dramatically decreases water splash over the windscreen when driving through water.

The sporty feel is repeated in the passenger cabin with a Mitsubishi-first electric park brake and lofty centre console that wraps around occupants of the front seats.
