Water worries SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council has refuted claims by a Yangan resident of poor water quality in her area.

Yangan resident Lyn Gynther said she had been fighting an ongoing battle with Southern Downs Regional Council Warwick “for years now” which could see her lose her house following council action for unpaid rates.

“The water at the property we own in Yangan is undrinkable and periodically black, muddy in colour and normally urine coloured when you fill up a jug or vanity basin,” she said.

In a letter to the SFT Mrs Gynther said “last year six of my kan-

garoo joeys nearly died from camphylobactor and I have heard people talking in the Medical Centre in Warwick that patients had also contracted camphylobactor during the same period of time”.

“As a wildlife carer I have never had as many ill joeys with gastrointestinal problems as I have had at this property,” she said.

However Southern Downs Regional Council’s Chief Executive Officer, David Keenan, disputed the claims.

“Council first investigated concerns about the water supply at Mrs Gynther’s property in January 2011,” he said “The diagnosis at that time was that the internal plumbing was non-

compliant or not installed correctly; the filtration system had been bypassed, and filters removed, and there was inappropriate plumbing to service the needs of her animals.

“Advice to this effect was provided to Mrs Gynther, along with suggested actions and alternative solutions that could be taken to improve the situation.

“Council received a further complaint from Mrs Gynther in May 2015, following which Council’s Water and Waste Water team carried out water quality tests. The results of these tests were compliant with the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines.”

Mrs Gyther said the council had decided to auction her property in May this year for overdue rates.

“Even though we have relented and are paying them $600 a fortnight, they are proceeding with this action regardless,” she said.

“I have given the SDRC every opportunity to fix this water together with water that floods our lane, which in itself is a raging torrent in normal heavy rain downpours, and I have attached photos of how it can overflow into the house yard.

“The driveway has also sustained significant damage due to water coming off Yangan Killarney Road and through the property.”

In relation to the auction in May, Mr Keenan said there was a process in the Local Government Act in relation to property owners who failed to pay their rates, and council was following that process.

“I don’t need a job. I have a job with the council that I really enjoy and I work with some great people. I do feel that I can offer more to the Southern Downs Region than I currently do however. I feel the people of this region are calling out for

Should I be elected to council, the law dictates that I must resign from my job at the council. The law also prevents me from campaigning on work time or using information I have gathered as an employee for the campaign. These are issues I take very seriously and will strictly adhere to them.”

By TANIA PHILLIPS A SOUTHERN Downs store has been recognised nationally for its performance.

Mr Rental Southern Downs was a top performer at the annual Mr Rental Excellence Awards held on Friday 26 February in Adelaide taking out the 2016 Most Improved Franchise Store Australia accolade.

Sarah Littleproud, who operates the Mr Rental Southern Downs store at 94 Palmerin Street, Warwick, accepted the prize at the gala dinner held at the Stamford Grand Adelaide in Glenelg, South Australia.

The awards evening marked the conclusion of the franchise group’s three-day annual conference, which was attended by more than 115 people including franchisees, support office team members and business partners from across Australia and

New Zealand.

Franchisees were judged on a number of criteria including customer service, sales performance and business reviews conducted throughout the year.

Mr Rental CEO, James NixonSmith congratulated the Southern Downs franchisee on her outstanding performance.

“Our franchisee Sarah went above and beyond for her customers and local community in 2015 and her efforts have been rewarded,” Mr Nixon-Smith said.

“We are extremely proud of Sarah’s achievements and look forward to her success in the year ahead.”

The annual Mr Rental Excellence Awards celebrate the hard work of franchisees and team members across both Australia and New Zealand.

“It is an opportunity for us to recognise the efforts of our top franchisees and team members who have achieved strong results throughout the year,” Mr Nixon-Smith said.

“It is important for us to reward those who have put their best foot forward and continually strive to provide exceptional customer service and leadership in our network, show dedication to growing the brand and demonstrate outstanding commitment to their local community.”

Mr Rental co-founders Kerrianne and Glen Hickman, who began the company in 1991 before it franchised in 2001, hosted the event held in Adelaide.

Gold star for council in positively glowing report card SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council’s report card is looking bright following a review of compliments and positive feedback received from the community about council services over the past six months.

While a lot of negativity has been publicly aimed at the council in recent times, there is much to celebrate with residents and visitors regularly complimenting council services and thanking staff for going ‘above and beyond’ in the execution of their duties.

Southern Downs Regional Council’s chief executive officer David Keenan said in a climate of increasing negativity, particularly in social

media, it’s important to balance that against the ‘positives’ and celebrate the successes.

“Council officers often get portrayed poorly with stories aired about failings on the service delivery front, and this impacts both staff morale and the broader community’s perceptions not only about council but our region.

“So it’s been enlightening to have a look at the breadth of customer and community compliments and thanks that council has received over the last six months, which averaged out to about six to seven per month.

“In that time, council has received in the order of 40 notes of thanks and appreciation, compliments and positive feedback about a range of coun-

cil services such as road and infrastructure works and improvements, maintenance of the wonderful parks and gardens and other community facilities across the region, cemetery services, library services, and the assistance and support provided to community and sporting groups right across the region.

“This is consistent with the positive comments I continue to receive directly from residents, business operators and visitors, about the high level of customer service offered by staff and the quality of the services delivered by council’s indoor and outdoor staff.

“Whilst significant challenges remain for council in relation to financial sustainability and the level of

SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council is currently monitoring a colony of flying foxes located in Killarney, and reminds residents to be aware of and minimise risks associated with these animals.

Council’s director Planning, Environment and Community Services Ken Harris said a council officer had been out to Killarney to inspect areas where the flying foxes were currently roosting.

“Council’s officer has spoken with some of the local residents about the colony size, breed and distribution,” Mr Harris said.

“Killarney residents have reported that the colony seems to have reduced significantly, with numbers less than one quarter of the colony size observed over the last week or two.

“The vast majority of the remaining flying fox colony appears now to be located along the Condamine River downstream of the bridge in Willow Street, and east of the Killarney Pool.

“Past experience has shown that flying foxes are likely to move on with the onset of the cold weather, and this may already be underway given the residents’ observations of reducing numbers of these animals.”

Council will continue to monitor the situation in Killarney, and as a precaution, given the proximity of the colony to the Killarney Pool, Council has closed the Killarney Pool, effective from this week.

The pool was scheduled to close on 24 March for the autumn/winter close-down period. Council also urges all residents, particularly school children, not to handle sick, injured or orphaned flying foxes.

“Bats and flying foxes may carry bacteria and viruses, such as Australian Bat Lyssavirus, which can be harmful to humans,” he said.

“Although the risk of infection is low, people should avoid handling these animals.” “ If you find a sick, injured or orphaned flying fox or bat, do not touch it. Contact the RSPCA (1300 ANIMAL or 1300 264 625) or your local wildlife care group/rescuer/carer or the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection (1300 130 372) for assistance.”

Coolest town covered with snowflakes Casey’s tips

By TANIA PHILLIPS PREPARATIONS are well underway for the Snowflakes in Stanthorpe festival - a celebration of all things cold, in the coldest town in Qld. It was originally the brainchild of four energetic young women in 2013.

They thought Stanthorpe should build on this reputation and celebrate this climatic phenomenon in a day long community event to bring visitors and tourists to Stanthorpe.

The event that happened on 3 July 2013 included markets along the creek, activities in town and a snow making machine available for kids to have a snowman making competition and throw some snowballs around.

An estimated 300 people quickly turned into 3000, showing that the continued fascination Australians have with snow in winter was still there.

Similarly in on 17 July 2015, the population of Stanthorpe swelled as visitors from neighbouring towns and Brisbane descended to see, play, touch, feel, photograph, throw and bask in ‘The Snow’.

After these marvels, a group of communityminded volunteers decided to resurrect the festival and celebrate the ‘coolest’ town in the state.

The festival is jointly run between the Stanthorpe and Granite Belt Chamber of Commerce and the Stanthorpe Agricultural Society, chamber president John Bylicki said.

“It’s exciting, it’s amazing and we’re going to have an incredible line-up of winter activities for people to do!” he said.

Getting ready for Snowflakes.

The three-day event sees an ice rink, an industrial snow machine, an eight metre human snow globe and a snowman building competition to name just a few events.

Perfectly located in the picturesque Southern Downs, Stanthorpe is an easy drive from Toowoomba, Brisbane, coastal areas and northern New South Wales.

“The Snowflakes in Stanthorpe committee warmly invite you to celebrate all things great about winter in the coolest town in Queensland,” he said.

Going to water SOMETHING for the mayor and councillors to think about before being elected.

Are you going to do something about the quality of water to the small outer towns? I live in Karara and we are on water restrictions like Warwick, but our water is pumped from the creek and is unfit for human consumption.

We have spoken to two higher councillors and they seem to think as long as the water meter ticks over it is OK. By the way this creek we get this water from runs near a piggery and when the creek is dry cattle, pigs, goats and the like roam the creek bed.

So council, it would be nice to see council do something about these water systems instead of spending thousands of dollars putting in concrete walkways out towards Lyndhurst Lane and other places which seldom get used.

You do not need to vote for any candidate, you can vote against any or all of them who you do not like or agree with.

The Constitution of the Australian Commonwealth is the Supreme Law, absolutely, and all people must obey it, including politicians and councillors.

The Constitution states (Sections 7 and 24) quote “Directly chosen by the people” end quote, by the law called “necessary implication” and also commonsense, this also means you can choose NOT to vote for unacceptable candidates, unfortunately the Electoral Commission Queensland (ECQ) do not provide for this, however we the people have the constitutional right to provide for it ourselves, we do this by voting (writing) the word “OUT” in every candidate's box we do not agree with, even all of them, that is “necessary implication” at work.

And please use an ink pen, you need to provide your own because the ECQ does not provide that either.

Another matter, the SDRC elections are un-

lawful and should halt right now, because in Australia we do have secret votes, because some idiot in the government has printed our name, address and birth date on the ballot paper envelope the election is NOT a secret vote, therefore in accordance with the Electoral Act it is unlawful and worthy of no obedience. It is necessary for the election to be cancelled and moved forward to a new date so that they can re-mail out new correct envelopes.

Another war looms AUSTRALIA is getting ready to go to war again.

Latest news indicates that United States troops and US aircraft are to be based in the Northern Territory as tension increases between China, the USA and Australia over China’s reclaimed islands in the South China Sea. What business is it of ours as to what goes on in the South China Sea over some dredged up dirt from the ocean floor. And then there’s that matter of Darwin’s port being leased to China for 99 years. It boggles the mind when we see these contradictory happenings taking place.

It appears that PM Malcolm is all too willing to go along with US military forces using Australia as a forward military base in a planned future war with China. As the days rapidly pass it becomes all too obvious that the PM seems to owe more allegiance to America than to our own welfare.

In the Junior Men’s Compound division Remy performed well and reached the 1/8 final with a tie leading to a one arrow shoot-off. In the Junior Men’s Compound Team the three Australian boys performed exceptionally well winning the Bronze.

This is an amazing achievement as the team was the only medalists for Australia at the event.

Remy's calendar is full, and upcoming events include IBO World Championship in the USA, Australian Field Open in Melbourne, Junior National

Championships in Penrith and theTrans-Tasman event in New Zealand.

WOODENBONG’S own answer to Hawkeye and Robin Hood, Remy Leonard is now an international success story, coming home from the World Archery Indoor Championships with a bronze medal.

Remy, 16, was part of the Australian team that finished third in the Junior Men’s Compound Team event behind Russia (gold) and Italy (silver).

It’s great to see a young boy from the bush taking on the world.

Remy Leonard from Woodenbong headed to Ankara in Turkey to represent Australia by competing in the World Archery Indoor Championships.

Accompanied by his father, Chris, and his grandparents, Sharyn and Terry, Remy found it to be worlds apart from Woodenbong.

The venue for the event was the Congresium, a short walk from the Australian representative’s accommodation through bustling Ankara. The Congresium is a huge, multi- level conference/showroom/exhibition centre.

By TANIA PHILLIPS TOOWOOMBA Hotrod Club held its 16th annual “High Altitude Hotrod Run” over the weekend.

One of the activities organised as part of the weekend is a ‘run’ out to Clifton. More than 50 hotrods made their way from Toowoomba to Clifton, via Wyreema, Cambooya, Greenmount and Nobby. While at Clifton, run entrants visited the New Tivoli Picture Theatre and the Clifton Historical Museum.

The hotrods were parked in the grounds of Pursehouse Rural, towards the Museum and photographer TERRY WEST dropped in to see the magnificent beasts.

Visiting the Downs from Ipswich was Alan Rowe and Paul Custers.

Waste won’t wait for Easter

DURING the Easter period, Southern Downs Regional Council waste collection services and waste facilities will operate as normal with a few exceptions.

Council’s Environmental Services Manager Mr Tim O’Brien said the Pratten, Yangan, Maryvale and Allora Waste Transfer Stations would

be closed on Good Friday, 25 March. They will re-open on Saturday, March 26 for normal hours, starting at 8am.

“All other waste facilities across the Southern Downs region will continue with no changes or interruptions over the Easter period (Good Friday, 25 March to Easter Monday, 28 March).

“Council wishes everyone a safe and happy Easter and reminds everyone to take the opportunity to recycle paper, cardboard and other materials where possible during the holiday period," he said.

By TANIA PHILLIPS WARWICK Art Gallery has worked with four exceptionally talented local photographers to present its latest exhibition, Weather Exposure.

The exhibition was inspired by the popularity of weather chasing groups on Facebook such Trance-Media Southern, SE QLD Weather Photography and Higgins Storm Chasing and the enormous wealth of photographic talent on the Southern Downs.

Four popular local photographers have participated in the exhibition; Stephen Reid, Chris McFerran, Caralee Mirfin and the Southern Free Times’ Terry West.

The Southern Downs landscape is renowned for its beauty, wide open spaces and distinctive seasons.

Most of the images in the exhibition are of the local area and feature magnificent captures of storm clouds, rainbows, frost and sunshine.

Weather Exposure is on display until Sunday 10 April, 2016.

An official opening was held on Friday and the free event allowed the public to meet the talented quartet.

Of course our own weather man Terry took the opportunity to grab some social shots for the paper (though as he’s in some of them, we suspect he had a little help).

Congratulations to Terry and the other photographers involved.

Fresh plea for safety RACQ has pleaded with Queensland motorists to heed repeated safety warnings and stop careless behaviour behind the wheel.

RACQ spokesperson Lauren Ritchie said it was time everyone took greater responsibility for their actions while on the road, especially during the Easter holiday period.

“Far too many people are ignoring warnings and safety advice, apparently under the misguided notion that the rules somehow don’t apply to them,” Ms Ritchie said.

“It’s called the Fatal Five for a reason; we’re seeing too many lives tragically cut short and others ruined by distraction, including mobile phone use behind the wheel, speeding, driving tired, drink or drug driving or not wearing seatbelts.

“Better road infrastructure and safer cars play an important part in keeping motorists safe, but the far bigger onus is on motorists to heed safety advice to avoid becoming a statistic.

“There’s no justification for being in a moving car without wearing a seatbelt. You

wouldn’t skydive without a parachute, yet people continue to ignore the lifesaving equipment provided for them.”

Ms Ritchie said planning was the key to surviving longer road trips over the holidays.

“Remember to map out your journey in advance, and plan to pull over at a rest stop every two hours for at least 15 minutes,” she said.

“Always allow extra time for your trip so you don’t feel pressured to stay on the road to meet a tight timeframe.”

IT’S that time of year again when all the colour, fun and action of Showtime comes to Warwick.

Look out for plenty of new fun and attractions.

This year for the first time there will be fireworks on both Friday and Saturday nights for the family to enjoy as well as plenty of other night time entertainment.

Rooftop Express will take to the stage to play on Friday while FMX Kaos will provide the Saturday night entertainment.

And this year there will be plenty of displays for the kids of all ages to enjoy.

They can learn about a range of topics such as bee keeping, reptiles, blacksmithing and sheep shearing.

Warwick Agricultural Show began in 1867 and is still an important event on the local calendar.

People of all ages and from all walks of life, whether from city or country, enjoy attending their local show.

While the young and young at heart can enjoy the fairy floss, show bags of goodies and the thrills of rides and fun of sideshow alley, other people can enjoy the agricultural and industrial exhibits, entertainment or main ring features.

THIS little sleeper is the best movie going around at the moment.

Filmed on a tiny $15 million budget, it’s already taken twice that in the US. A distant relative of the alien invasion film Cloverfield a few years back, the latest film heads in an entirely different direction.

Live bands are one of the greatest delights you can experience; the music, the lights, the band, even the crowd add an extra dimension to favourite hits.

On the other hand, missing a concert because it’s too far away ... is pretty disappointing.

So Slydogz Eventz have decided it’s time to bring the entertainment to bush with a series of events coming to Goondiwindi, Roma, Inverell and of course Stanthorpe.

These shows feature the musical talents of Aussie rock ‘n’ roll kings The Radiators, the undeniably talented and irreplaceable band The Badloves and Townsville-based rockabilly band The Koffin Rockers.

Each of these events will be held in the town centre with venues holding less than 1000 people, so get in quick because once all tickets are sold there

leaves the city and is involved in a car accident.

She awakes in a rural bunker, in the “care" of John Goodman (Howard) - and the initial thought is she’s captive to a psycho.

So … is she?

The initial story told by Howard is there’s been some form of attack (terrorists, aliens, North Korea?) and this is confirmed by the bunker’s other occupant, John Gallagher Jr (aka Jim from Newsroom) as Emmett.

It’s a great performance from Goodman as Howard, and

it’s certainly very hard to tell whether this nutty survivalist is what he makes out to be.

The tension ratchets up as Michelle tries to get to the bottom of the mystery … with Howard’s lies, coupled with some outside evidence, making it hard to get to the bottom of things. And therein lies the core of the film.

To say more would be to give away one of the great twists of recent cinema.

But rest assured, 10 Cloverfield Lane is a different, and spicy, little morsel indeed.

THE Stanthorpe Writers Group has partnered with Queensland Writers Centre to deliver the Amplified Author Writing Workshop at the Queensland College of Wine Tourism on 9 April.

The world of ebooks and self-publishing can be overwhelming according to organiser Margot Tesch.

She said the full-day seminar covered broad industry trends from traditional publishing models to contemporary publishing with innovative author-reader interactions.

“This course is all you need to navigate the digital landscape by providing you with information about ebooks and the publishing industry and teaching you the practical skills to produce your own ebooks,” she said.

“The workshop will be delivered by Simon Groth, manager of if:book Australia.

“This course is a must for inspiring creative writers who want to learn how to connect with their audience in the digital world.”

The day will begin at 10.30am and finish at 4.30pm.

If participants are able to bring

their own laptops it will be beneficial, but it is not essential.

Cost to participants is only $15 which includes lunch.

A CHARITY group believes a $10 billion social and affordable housing fund is required to fix the national homelessness crisis.

DENIS Walsh, president of St Vincent de Paul Society NSW, supports the societyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s national plan to put in place a $10 billion social and affordable housing fund to address the chronic housing and homelessness issues that Australia continues to face.

The report, The Ache for Home, was released in Parliament House Canberra earlier this month and

contains a comprehensive housing and homelessness plan that has tangible policy recommendations to address the fact that in prosperous Australia there are over 100,000 people who experience homelessness each night, he said.

Mr Walsh said the societyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s key recommendations to the Federal Government are: 1. The establishment of a $10 billion Social and Affordable Housing Fund.

2. The preparation of a National Housing Plan.

3. The recognition of the human right to housing. 4. The setting of new targets to halve homelessness and halve the housing shortfall by 2025.

5. The Commonwealth Rent Assistance to be increased and indexed properly.

6. Changes to negative gearing and capital gains tax to favour building new affordable housing. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We believe housing is a core human right, and without secure housing, people are severely restricted in their social and economic participation,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have over 26,203 members and volunteers who made close on 200,000 visits to assist people experiencing disadvantage. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They see the human face of poverty and homelessness in prosperous Australia. We ask Premier Mike Baird to support our call to set clear targets for the construction of social and affordable housing units and end the

housing crisis facing us in NSW.â&#x20AC;?

Acting CEO Dianne Lucas said it was a major problem across the country. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Vinnies believes we must start to reverse the significant undersupply of social and affordable housing,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are close to 60,000 applicants still on the social housing waiting list with waiting times ranging from four to over 10 years. The Commonwealth and NSW Governments must work together to urgently address this crisis.â&#x20AC;?

AFTER their stellar premiership winning season in 2015, Stanthorpe face the real possibility of not fielding a rugby league side in 2016.

This is not a problem unique to Stanthorpe or the BRL as football at grassroots struggles for survival.

In recent years, the State Government through a plethora of grants has invested heavily in upgrading the infrastructure at Sullivan Oval, yet this and the hard work of volunteers and committees is not enough to draw players to the game.

Over recent seasons, there has been a gradual decline in the number of local players donning the Gremlins jersey with many players coming from outside the town. This year with the retirement of several players and others leaving the district, the club finds itself in dire straits.

A proposed merger with arch rivals the Texas Terriers would have been unheard of and unpalatable for many Gremlins supporters several seasons back. At present it may be the only way that Stanthorpe will play a part in this season’s BRL competition and the merger may not fly unless more players from Stanthorpe put their hand up.

It highlights once again the fragility of country football which is so important for many small communities. It also highlights the contentious issue of trying to play both rugby league and soccer /football on the same day in a town the size of Stanthorpe. This, as everyone in the BRL knows, is my pet hobby horse.

Right now, however, we need the young blokes in Stanthorpe to step up and have a go. You don’t need to be Cameron Smith’s or Wally Lewis’ - just be prepared to commit to a team for the season. Like so many people who have played and enjoyed the game, I cannot fathom that there are not at least 20 young blokes in Stanthorpe keen to have a go. I am sure no-one who has played the game will disagree that the mates you make playing footy are your mates for life.

It is after all the greatest game of all.

- Casey SPORTERS BACK ON DECK SPORTERS were back on deck last Sunday in Stanthorpe after a break during the Apple and Grape Festival and it was a welcome return for Mick Doorley and runner-up Angelo Doorley.

Mark Lynam had the best gross and the Pin Shot on the 17th. The run-downs went to Phil Zikan and Ray Thorn. No Won Kim had the Pin Shot on the 12th and the Pro Pin. Mark Lynam capped off a winning day by taking home one of the meat trays and Dave Williams collected the second meat tray.

A few notes for the Sporters’ diary - there will be no Sporters on Easter Sunday and 3 April - the following Sunday will be an afternoon game due to the pennants competition. Tee will be between noon and 12.30pm. The Maureen Bates Memorial Day has been set down for 10 April and a sheet will be on the board at the club shortly. This is always one of the most popular days on the Stanthorpe golfing calendar. There will be great prizes on offer followed by a multi draw raffle. This weekend however tee off is at the normal time of 8am - 8.30am a multi draw raffle.

ROUND THREE A CHALLENGE WITH mounting injuries, suspensions and some teams not living up to early expectations, Round three of the NRL looks challenging for tipsters.

The biggest news of the week was, of course, the loss of Billy Slater for the season, with the Storm and Origin star undergoing another round of surgery on his troublesome shoulder.

There is no chance we will see Billy the Kid again this season and all league fans will be, this

is not a career-ending moment for one of the greatest players in the game.

This week Casey’s tips for what they are worth are Cowboys to bounce back from their lacklustre performance against the Eels. The Bulldogs to continue the winning feeling along with the Raiders and Broncos. Another win in the pipeline for long- suffering Tigers fans, but it could be a close one and despite the loss of Billy, the Storm is set to rain on the Warriors parade. The Bunnies look unstoppable early in the season with their premiership odds plummeting already and the Sharks to heap more pain on the hapless Eagles.

WILLIAMS A ‘GARRA WINNER MEMBERS and guests at the Wallangarra Golf club played a stableford competition last Saturday. Peter Williams edged out Garry Sutcliffe to win the event. Gary Sutcliffe and Tony Murphy tied for third position.

Kevin Williams and Andrew Thompson each claimed pin shots at the third and ninth respectively and Sutcliffe and Williams held the Approach shots at two and 14.

This week the club has scheduled a single stroke competition.

COME TRY - YOU MIGHT LIKE THE Stanthorpe Croquet club has planned a “Come and Try Weekend for 16 and 17 April.

All those interested in learning more about mallet sports and enjoy moderate exercise and have a sporting interest with a very social atmosphere, are welcome. The green is adjacent to the golf and bowls club. Come and join club members and see how the various games are played. On both days, sessions will commence at 1.30pm, both are free. Club members will be on hand to assist and answer any questions you may have and, of course, to serve afternoon tea.

MALLET NEWS CLOSE games have been the highlight at association croquet recently. Joy Newman was very pleased when she had five peels before morning tea. For the uninitiated - a peel is when you put both balls through the hoop in one turn. Joy Newman is playing well and combined with Margaret Dickenson defeated Grace Howard 26-18.

Andrea Denkewitz, 18, notched up an 18-12 win over Jenny Tunbridge while Val Richards and Heather Widderick went down 18-16 in a close contest to Val Shephard and Effey Russell. Grace Howard had a break of four in her game against Heather Widderick, who had finished with four breaks of two but lost the game 26-15.

Despite a brief rain interruption at golf croquet, two groups of four played doubles last week.

In the first group, Liz Ellway and Bill Golding paired against Teresa Pyne and Elaine Brown.

The latter pair scored eight hoops but were defeated 13-8. Golding top scored with seven hoops while his partner managed an impressive hoop in one. Shirley Evans and Val Fancourt both played well against Di Wren and Judy Lock. Shirley Evans top scored with seven and her partner shot two holes in one in their 13-10 win.

In the second round of games, Dianne Wren and Liz Ellway teamed up and played well for a 13-11 win over from Bill Golding and Judy Lock.

Teresa Pyne and Shirley Evans had a 10-8 win over Val Fancourt and partner Elaine Brown in a game that was shortened. Fancourt scored another hoop in one taking her tally to three for the day.

On Friday gateballers played two team games.

The first game ended in an 11-all draw, however after a countback the Red team claimed the win over White. In the second game, the White team were comfortable 16-10 winners.

After the break, two games of Triples were decided with one player acting as referee.

Scores were again close, with Red winning one game 15 points to 14 and White the other 11 points to nine. John Draper was the standout player in both of these games.

The final game played was a doubles match with Margaret Dickenson and Andrea Denkewitz teaming up against Val Fancourt and Bill Golding. Previous matches between these teams had been won by Val and Bill, however Margaret and Andrea restored some pride with a 21 points to seven win.

The talented young cricketer has had a stellar season, tasting success at various representative levels and has played a key role for his club Souths, was named Junior (Colt) Player of the Year and also Stanthorpe Player of the Year.

Throughout the season, 16-year-old Lanza who played in the winning Mitchell Shield side and was selected in the Darling Downs Under 19 schoolboys side amassed an impressive tally. He made 395 runs; took nine wickets; claimed nine catches and a run out.

The award for the Mitchell Shield Player of the Year went to Ross Lupton after another successful representative season with bat and ball and Anthony Marino Davis Shield Rep Player.

Ben Staley was named Club Person of the Year and also has the best batting aggregate. Sam Dowie picked up the award for the best batting average and was named Stanthorpe’s Best and Fairest. Damien Anderson finished the year with the best bowling average and Tim Harslett the best bowling aggregate. The safe hands of Todd Brady earned him the gong for the most catches.

The grand final of the 2015/'16 Stanthorpe Cricket season will be played at the CF White Oval this Saturday.

WHEATVALE PREMIERS IN UPSET WIN IN A result that many did not see coming, Wheatvale claimed the ‘A’grade Warwick Cricket Association premiership on Saturday. A sensational spell of bowling from Jack and James Breen had competition frontrunners and favourites for the premiership Maryvale Condamine on the back foot and they failed to recover.

Maryvale Condamine won the toss and began well. They looked comfortable reaching 50 with-

out loss at the drinks break. Opener Pat Bourke was run out for 28 and what followed was an amazing scene as wickets fell like nine pins - in fact five wickets for the addition of nine runs.

In an outstanding performance, the Breen brothers bowling in partnership ripped through the Maryvale top order. Jack took 3/15 from his 10-over spell and not to be outdone his brother James finished with 1/15 from his 10 overs. In a real turn around, the favourites found themselves 5/74 by the second drinks break.

It took the experience of Michael Bourke (35) and Kevin Bourke (19) to steady the ship and bat out the full 50 overs. Unfortunately, the senior member of the partnership Kevin was forced to retire with a back injury. Maryvale finished the innings with a moderate total of 139. Wheatvale captain Paul Cantwell also contributed to Maryvale’s problems taking two wickets.

Defending only 139 in a bid to claim the premiership against a quality batting line-up was always going to be a tough ask for Maryvale Condamine.

Wheatvale’s openers Brendan Malone (27) and Ryan Collins (61) set a solid platform with an opening partnership of 65 before Josh Ryan claimed two quick wickets giving the Maryvale Condamine supporters some hope of a miraculous win.

Wheatvale captain Paul Cantwell joined Collins at the crease and the pair progressed the score to 3/119 before Collins was dismissed. When Cantwell was caught by Dave Walker off the bowling of Kev Bourke for 21, it was left to Chris Malone and Jonno Colfs to pick up the last few runs. Colfs played a confident shot through midwicket to pick up two runs; a six-wicket victory and the premiership for his side.

There were some outstanding performances in this game, however, the Player of the Final and winner of the Tom and Margaret Walsh Medal as decided by the grand final match umpires was Ryan Collins.

Following the grand final, the WCA 2015/16 Awards were announced.

Michael Bourke topped the Bowling Averages. Jordan Siebenhausen picked up the Award for the Best Batting Average (77.0); Matt Kiernan - most wickets (24). The Des Murphy Fielding award was won by Will Gordon. Paul Cantwell was named the Dennis Rettke All Rounder, taking 12 wickets and scoring 201 runs.

The Representative Player of the Year was shared by Kev Poole and Lachlan Gross.

After an impressive season Carter Billborough was named The Max Thorley Colt of the Year. He also picked up the award for the most runs in the season, 231.

David Walker was named WCA Player of the Year and both he and Carter Billborough were chosen to tour with the Wanderers’ Qld Club in August.

The President’s Volunteer Award went to Ben Radford for his work with the junior cricketers and the MyCricket website.

TIGERETTES WIN LADIES ROUND ROBIN THE Tenterfield Tigerettes look set for another good season after a win in the Round Robin last weekend played on their home ground. The girls who won back-to-back BRL League tag premierships kept their un-beaten record in tact with an 18-10 win over Goondiwindi in the final after defeating Stanthorpe 18-nil and Wallangarra 16-10.

Goondiwindi progressed to the final with wins over Wallangarra 14-4 and Stanthorpe 26-4.

On the same day, the Border Bushrangers played their inaugural game in the TRL. Simple errors and ball control cost the combined side, but the team showed real endeavour to stay with the more experienced Wattles side until late in the game. The final score was 32-10, and the local boys will be much better for the run. They face a tough task again this weekend when they play last season grand finalists Valleys in Toowoomba.

BRL ROUND ROBIN IN A real shock, the Stanthorpe Gremlins last season’s premiers will not field a side in this weekend’s BRL preseason round robin to be played at their home ground Sullivan Oval.

The Gremlins are struggling for players and are negotiating a merger with Texas for the season.

COLTS RESERVE GRADE PREMIERS THE Warwick Reserve Grade cricket grand final was decided on Saturday. At Mayhew Oval Colts batted first. Openers Adam Byrne and Lachlan Gross (61) took the score to 148 before the first wicket fell. Byrne and Ben Sullivan both made it into the 80s with some fine batting. Sullivan finished the innings not out 85 as Colts set Inglewood a run chase of 298. Colts captain Shaun O’Leary led from the front in the second innings.

The leg spinner took six wickets for just 18 runs as Colts applied pressure. While the captain bowled well, it was the fielding and catching of

his team mates that was a highlight of the game.

Brodie Quirk showed plenty of endeavour and athleticism when he took a catch on the boundary lobbing the ball into the air to reclaim it inside the boundary rope. Despite a second wicket stand from Smith and Howard which added 35 runs, Colts were able to contain Inglewood and they were dismissed for 104. Following his impressive bowling performance, Sean O’Leary was named Player of the Final.

STANTHORPE GRANDFINAL REMATCH VALLEYS will be looking to reverse the tables when they meet 2014/'15 premiers RSL in a rematch of last season’s grand final on Saturday at CF White Oval.

Valleys were in sensational form last weekend, dismissing Souths for only 71 runs to cement their place in the most important game of the season.

Souths batted first and were immediately in trouble losing early wickets before Steve Martin was introduced into the attack. Martin took a match-winning six wickets for three runs in a remarkable bowling spell as Souths crumbled to be all out for 71.

Valleys quickly scored the required total without the loss of a wicket and go into this weekend’s game with plenty of confidence.

Captain Damian Martin concedes that his side will be underdogs in Saturday’s game. RSL have an almost unblemished record in the fixture games this season and start warm favourites.

Martin sees all-rounder Ross Lupton as one of the keys to the grand final. Luke Brady Sam Dowie and Duane Lihou are also expected to play a big part with both bat and ball.

Valley’s strength as we witnessed last Saturday is their bowling and the fact that they bat all the way down the order to number 10. The young Valleys side are attacking, keen and quick in the field and are capable of building pressure. Martin said, “We need to take every half chance to win.”
