A NARRE Warren man died in a motorcycle crash in Cranbourne West on Tuesday afternoon.

The incident brings this year’s state motorcycle death toll to 23.

Police say the 58-year-old man was riding west on Central Parkway about 4.20pm when he crashed.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Senior Sergeant Pat McGavigan from the Cranbourne police said the driver was launched into the air after the brakes on the Honda CB900F Hornet locked.

“He was found on the western side of the roundabout by a female passer-by after the collision,” Sen Sgt McGavigan said.

“He’s locked the brakes and dropped the bike and tumbled side over side through the central traffic island.”

Two homeowners have CCTV footage of the man losing control as he approached the Morningside Boulevard intersection.

Sen Sgt McGavigan said police are investigating if speed played a role in the man’s death due to the lengthy skid mark.

With no known witnesses, police are urging anyone who saw the incident to call 1800 333 000 or visit crimestoppersvic.com.au.

‘Mad’ road closure “MADNESS is an understatement.”

Cranbourne North resident of 20 years, Maria Seccas has slammed plans to close Abbotts Road, labelling the shock proposal, a “big disaster”.

Ms Seccas, who works on Abbotts Road, has been driving the length of the thoroughfare for 14 years, saying the closure could add an extra 30 min-

utes onto her daily trip to work.

“The road is vital,” she said.

“My initial reaction to the plans was ‘stupidity’, and they cannot do this.

“Closing it will most definitely put pressure on the surrounding roads, and if it happens people will have to leave earlier to get to work on time and it’s only going to put added strain on families with kids.”

the proposed road closure by the Level Crossing Removal Authority (LCRA), which outlined a plan for a new road link over the Cranbourne rail line which would connect Remington Drive to Pound Road and “the truncation of Abbotts Road”, which means its closure.

would provide significant benefit to the Dandenong South Industrial Precinct”.

But local businesses, which have expressed fear that the closure will cost jobs, have been fighting the proposal since late February.

“Once a decision is made, a lot of people will come out of the wood work and ask reasons why, if we can get a lot of people expressing their opinions to the LCRA there might be a slim hope,” she said.

A hidden ‘radical’

TERRORISM expert Greg Barton is informed by 27 years’ expertise in Islamic political thought and movements.

He had no simple, easy answer on why teenager Numan Haider was apparently radicalised and stabbed two police officers before he was fatally shot in front of Endeavour Hills police station on 23 September 2014.

“There’s a risk in everything we do, including not doing something,” he said.

Professor Barton appeared at Haider’s coronial inquest at the County Court on 11 March which is examining Haider’s demise and how to snap susceptible teen males from the Islamic State (IS) spell.

Rachel Ellyard, counsel assisting the coroner, posed to Professor Barton that this might not have happened had Haider not been aware of police interest in him.

What if his room had not been searched by police without his permission on the day of the attack or what if police had not been intent on meeting him that same day, she asked.

Maybe this “pushed” Haider into doing something he “might not have been prepared to do”, Ms Ellyard said.

Professor Barton told presiding coroner John Olle that police tried to do the right thing. They followed up on something they were concerned about.

“They did not rush into arrest, did not prejudge,” he said.

“It was well intentioned and appropriate.”

But “knowing what we know now” perhaps police could do things differently, he said, such as eschewing uniforms and making meetings with at-risk teens as low-key as possible.

Since 9/11, Professor Barton’s research has necessarily focused more on extremism.

There had been an “unprecedented” escalation of IS-inspired, radicalised young people in the past 18 months, the former head of Monash University’s Global Terrorism Research Centre said.

School-aged males swept up in sophisticated social media and social networks have flown out to serve IS in Syria and Iraq before their families had a whiff of what was happening.

Others carried out deadly missions at home.

Eighteen-year-old Haider was allegedly told by his family and ASIO officers to quit visiting Al-Furqan Islamic Centre bookshop in Springvale South and not to associate with a certain friend who attended Al-Furqan.

Al-Furqan was formed by Sheik Harun Mehicevic who had earlier been thrown out of a Bosnian mosque in Noble Park.

Shootings: call for calm

Numan Haider was probably radicalised prior to stabbing police officers in September 2014, a coroner's court was told. and Brisbane, it hosted seminars that had become a concern to authorities.

But despite a federal police raid in 2012, there had been a lack of clear evidence of terror threats.

Professor Barton said a “troubled” Haider appeared to be part of a circle of friends who gathered at the bookstore, perhaps out of “youthful rebellion”.

On one hand it was a “positive influence”, a place of belonging for young men, Professor Barton said.

On the other, it was a type of secretive, religious cult that was suspicious of all outside and had “malign elements”.

Mainstream mosques had “pushed” away such extremists and their attempts to take young members, and shunned them “into the fringes of the fringe” of Muslim society, Professor Barton told the court.

This small band of extremists presented themselves as “bastions of purity” who knew “the truth”. Until IS rose, such extremism was slow to catch on.

Young eyes and minds were attracted to an IS magazine Dabiq which was filled with “polished” articles, Professor Barton said and videos “leveraged a long line of keyboard warriors”.

IS preyed on the power of “false friendship”, cut through family and mosque ties and exploited the “gap” between first-generation migrants and their children. All personal struggles were part of a “cosmic conspiracy”, it said.

Professor Barton described it as a “zero to hero” thing.

“You’ve done things you’re ashamed of and have a sense of failure but you can redeem all that.

“You (can) go out tomorrow morning, you’ll die and die a hero.”

Two weeks before Haider was shot he visited Bankstown where the notorious Al-Risalah Islamic Centre was based.

The centre had been linked to recruiting young males to join IS in the Middle East combat zone.

Professor Barton said Al-Furqan had an unclear but not inconsequential connection with the Sydney centre.

“It wasn’t until this case (Haider’s death) that the severity of those concerns became clear.”

Haider’s family had fled as refugees from the Taliban in Afghanistan more than a decade earlier.

Yet Haider’s Facebook post on 18 September 2014 - less than a week before his demise - echoed IS-style fundamentalism.

Above it was a photo of Haider in camouflage, a balaclava and holding a Shahada banner.

A commenter on the post asked if Haider was going to kill Shias too.

“Don’t worry bro I’m not going to kill you,” Haider replied.

The timing was telling. It was posted just hours after a confrontation with police at Dandenong Plaza in which Haider raved and waved an Islamic flag.

On the same day, large “dramatic” counter-terrorist raids were launched in Sydney and Brisbane after an intercepted call sparked fears of a terror attack.

The raids, filmed by news crews, presented as “heavy handed”, Professor Barton said.

It distressed Muslims to see doors kicked down and women in nightwear pushed to the street before dawn.

On Facebook, Haider described the AFP as declaring “war on Muslims”, warning his “brothers” at Furqan and Hallam mosques that they could be the next raid targets.

“To ASIO and AFP go f*** yourself you dogs,” he posted. He was showing “solidarity” with IS or, at the least, with extremists, Professor Barton said.

“It somehow makes it more justifiable (to target someone in uniform such as police).

“They’re part of the state that’s against (them).”

Two days later, a fatwa was issued worldwide by Islamic State’s spiritual leader.

Professor Barton regarded it as a “tipping point” in the radicalisation campaign. The message was ‘if you can’t join IS in building its state then you’re obliged to fight “pretty much everyone”,’ he said.

Professor Barton said even without intense media coverage of the fatwa, its message would have still reached those most susceptible to the ideas.

He added that the media should think more about its use of IS images.

The day before Haider fatefully attacked police, his passport was cancelled. His parents earlier told the Coroners’ Court that this decision greatly upset Haider as did the police search of his room.

The parents told the court they had plans to fly with Haider to Germany and Afghanistan to meet relatives and find him a bride.

So what is the “no simple, easy” solution? How should another Haider tragedy be averted?

Professor Barton said it was a matter of specifically training teachers, injecting youth workers into Muslim communities and having young people looking out for their troubled peers.

It was important to publicise the three signs of a radicalised person.

They significantly change friend groups, suddenly adopt extreme ideas and start behaving in a lawless, transgressive manner.

The approach should be the same as helping a young person through substance abuse, mental illness, relationship problems or sex abuse.

“This is about duty of care and the welfare of the young person,” Professor Barton told the court.

“It should be done quietly with no stigma, no pre-judgement.”

A government-led campaign was unlikely to be effective, he said.

“It’s not what government does well.”

Besides, radicalised teens are bound not to listen to that particular messenger, he said.

The inquest continues.

CASEY police have reassured the community after several shootings in the last week.

Shooting incidents have been reported in Narre Warren South, Hallam, and Noble Park North in the last seven days, while police are also investigating reports a man was seen brandishing a shotgun in Endeavour Hills.

While Detective Senior Sergeant Rob Clark acknowledged more gun incidents than usual had occurred “of late” in the region, and were being treated with concern by police, he said it was more of an “anomaly”.

“We take all firearm crimes seriously,” he said.

“If the public is involved in anything like that, take care of your safety.

“We’ll investigate it as thoroughly and diligently as we can.”

Detectives are investigating after a bullet was fired into a van parked outside a Narre Warren South home over the weekend.

The bullet was fired into the driver’s side of the white Mercedes van, which was parked outside a house in Robinswood Parade.

It was reported to police about 1.30pm on Sunday 13 March, but the shot may have been fired in the days beforehand.

There were no reports of injuries.

Shots were also reportedly fired into a home with three adult occupants in Frawley Road, Hallam, last week.

Casey CIU detectives say up to five shots were fired at the Frawley Road house - with four striking the front windows - about 12.15am on Wednesday 9 March .

Witnesses heard a car, but no description had yet been obtained, police say, and no injuries were reported.

Shots were also reportedly fired at a home in Watson Road, Noble Park North, about midnight on the same night.

A 25-year-old Endeavour Hills man received a minor injury, a police spokesman said.

Police are also investigating a bizarre incident in which a man was threatened with a shotgun before he had a shotgun shell thrown at him.

The victim was riding his push bike along Power Road in Endeavour Hills when a dark blue Holden Commodore VT pulled up alongside him about 7.40pm on Friday 11 March.

The car’s front passenger then pointed a shotgun barrel out of the window and yelled at the victim “You’re lucky!”

The man kept yelling before one of the car’s occupants then threw a shotgun shell at the victim.

The car then sped off, turning left onto Heatherton Road.

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH and CAM LUCADOU-WELLS DANDENONG ‘Apex’ gang members, who allegedly have been responsible for dozens of home invasions and car thefts in Casey over the past eight months, brought their thuggery to the Melbourne CBD on the weekend.

Named after Apex Street in Dandenong North, the gang of up to 200 youths from Sudanese, Pacific Islander and Middle Eastern among other ethnic backgrounds were seen hurling cafe chairs as they fought rival gang, Islander 21.

According to reports, 33 arrests have been made over two months, and 19 youths were processed by police after the Apex gang allegedly conducted a 24-hour series of home invasions which terrified Casey families on Saturday 20 February.

Just days after the city brawl, two men believed to be part of the Apex Gang were arrested in Dandenong over a series of alleged carjackings.

The 18-year-olds were ar-

rested by Port Phillip CIU detectives, Taskforce Tense and Special Operation Group officers at the corner of Stud and Heatherton roads just after 2pm on Monday 14 March.

Police say the pair, from Dandenong and Noble Park respectively, were involved in a spate of carjackings, aggravated burglaries and armed robberies in Melbourne’s south-east over several months.

One of their cars collided with a police vehicle during the arrest.

He was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

A police spokesman said it was not known if the pair were involved in the violent CBD brawl, however threats had hit a personal note at the Greater Dandenong police station after a female detective was targeted by an Apex gang member.

Star News reported on Friday 11 March that an Apex teen member allegedly threatened to shoot a Greater Dandenong detective and approached her in a cafe while she ate lunch with her partner.

According to a poster at the police station, Dandenong police have warned its officers that the Apex teen in question or his partners could launch an attack on the building.

Since the events in Melbourne’s CBD, over the Moomba long weekend, where police officers were forced to use pepper spray on the feuding gangs, Victoria Police has issued a statement.

“A number of youths were arrested at the scene while others fled on foot,” the statement read.

Police were called to the corner of Swanston and Flinders streets about 7.50pm on Saturday 12 March, where it's believed the gang of youths caused damage.

A man suffered injuries during a fight about 8.30pm, at Federation Square and was taken to The Alfred hospital with serious injuries.

Police are currently sifting through a large volume of CCTV footage and several more arrests are expected in the coming weeks.

Council applies to blow out rates cap

A SPIKE in local dog attacks has Casey Council on the front foot.

The City of Casey has responded to 44 reported dog attacks since 1 January, including one in which a young girl suffered serious injuries to her neck and shoulder, and another where a teenage girl was bitten on the face.

“The attacks have resulted in injuries ranging from minor bruising, puncture wounds, lacerations requiring stitches and in one case the death of an animal,” Casey mayor Sam Aziz said.

“In one instance, a small dog was attacked by two large dogs being walked by a child and young teenager who were unable to control them.

“This serves as a reminder to ensure whoever is walking a dog is able to control them.

“The council is disappointed

in the number of attacks this year and is urging all pet owners to take the necessary steps to avoid any more occurring.”

Late last year Star News spoke with Naomi Taguchi, whose small papillon dog Koji died after it was attacked by another dog in Cranbourne.

The offending dog, which resembled a bull mastiff, was euthanased.

Ms Taguchi, who had her young children with her at the time of the attack, sprained her ankle during the incident.

“I started moving to get away and then my legs were pushed out from under me,” she told Star News.

“And the next thing I knew the dog was attacking my dog which was on top of me and I had pulled the pram down with me and my daughters were screaming hanging upside down strapped into the pram.”

Dog attacks can result in fines as large as $18,240, crimi-

nal convictions and a jail sentence of up to six months.

“In addition, depending on the severity of the attack, there may be a requirement to destroy the dog responsible for the attack to ensure the future safety of the community,” Cr Aziz said.

“It is important that all pet owners act responsibly and play their part in ensuring that their pets are secured so they don’t pose a risk or threat to the community.

“Most dog attacks that happen outside of the family home are the result of poor fencing or open gates, and often occur close to the dog’s home.

“It is the dog owner’s responsibility to ensure that a dog is confined to the owner’s property at all times.”

CASEY council will apply to put rates up by 3.47 per cent 0.97 per cent more than the 2.5 per cent rate cap introduced by the Andrews government.

The additional increase equates to $14 per household.

The council confirmed on

Tuesday that it will apply for the variation.

In December community views were sought during the council’s focus group and online consultation. Mayor Sam Aziz previously conceded this would be an unpopular decision but said the council was acting in ratepayers' best interests.

Seat of calm

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH SHE may not call Lynbrook home, but she’s donated $500 to make the park she loves look better.

Lynh Lam lives in Beaconsfield but uses Lynbrook’s Banjo Paterson Park weekly as a place to destress after work.

It wasn’t until she realised

there was no place to sit that Ms Lam made the generous donation for a bench seat, which was matched by the Lynbrook Residents Association.

The City of Casey paid the difference and organised and installed the park bench.

“I thought I’d go and relax by the lake, I wanted to look at the view but there was no place

to sit,” Ms Lam said. ““There were two seats nearby but which faced the oval, not the lake, I think it’s a lovely area and will now use the seat at least once a month.”

Ms Lam said the area was so lucky to have so much “free open space” and wanted to make sure everyone could utilise it.

Fears over missing teen

POLICE hold concerns for the welfare of missing teenager, Rose Love, who may be in Cranbourne.

Investigators have been told 15-year-old Rose was last seen leaving her home address on Danaher Street in Wallan on Friday 11 March about 4pm.

Police are concerned for her welfare due to her age and it’s believed she may have been in

Melbourne or Cranbourne.

Investigators have released an image of Rose in the hope someone may know her whereabouts.

Rose is described as Caucasian, 175cm tall with red straight long hair.

Police pressured CRANBOURNE Police Station had to close its doors for 40 minutes due to insufficient officer numbers, the Opposition has claimed in Parliament.

Victoria Police spokeswoman Danielle Fleeton said that the Cranbourne counter was closed between 2.10am and 2.50am on Tuesday 8 March due to a high number of urgent incidents that required police attention.

“These included a serious collision, fatal collision, shooting and aggravated burglary,” Ms Fleeton said.

Both the Springvale and Cranbourne police stations operated a reduced counter service on that night.

Ms Fleeton says “unplanned

leave” closed the station’s counter service overnight.

“At this time, there was a greater need to have police out on the road where they are most needed rather than inside the station,” she said.

Opposition police spokesman and Eastern Victoria Region MP Edward O’Donoghue the situation reflected the “enormous pressure that police in the south-east are under”.

“I would suggest this is almost, or may be, unprecedented,” he said.

“The most recent police statistics show that crime is up and the most recent police statistics show that police numbers are down.

“The government has failed to provide the resources that police require.”

“I would also note that police numbers for Casey, including Cranbourne decreased by 8.16 full-time equivalents between September and December, 2015.”

Police Association Victoria secretary Ron Iddles said the situation was unacceptable.

“The public deserves better,” he said.

“It’s an indictment on the current state of wafer-thin frontline police resources that we are seeing some 24-hour police stations closing their doors for often extended periods.

“The obvious solution is to boost police numbers in order to keep pace with our state’s booming population growth.”

Mr Iddles said Victoria’s population was growing by more than

100,000 people every year.

“As long as police numbers remain stagnant, sadly, we will see more and more instances of supposedly 24-hour police stations closing their doors,” he said.

State Government spokesman Kosta Pandos said the Chief Commissioner directed the specific allocation of police resources based on operational need “and we will continue to consult closely with Victoria Police to ensure they are appropriately resourced”.

“We’ve funded an extra 700 police personnel and delivered a record $2.5 billion to Victoria Police to help keep our community safe, which is more than the previous Coalition Government ever did,” he said.

CRANBOURNE has the highest number of addresses flagged for violence in Casey by Ambulance Victoria.

Thirteen addresses in Cranbourne are identified on the special patient information system as violent, which means the occupants of these addresses are known to own weapons or have harmed paramedics in the past.

Five addresses in Cranbourne are flagged for safety, which can include patients known to bite and kick or those with a mental illness, as well as access challenges.

Ambulance Victoria has eight violent addresses flagged in Narre Warren and Hampton Park and four in Hallam.

Acting General Manager, Emergency Operations at Ambulance Victoria, Mick Stephenson said no paramedic was expected to enter a scene where violence is likely or suspected.

“The safety of paramedics is paramount and we do not tolerate any violence or aggression towards our staff,” Mr Stephenson said.

“We are continually reviewing our systems to provide the safest possible work environment for paramedics.”

Dandenong had an alarming number of violent addresses with 23, while Noble Park had 11 residences flagged for violence.

Mr Stephenson said paramedics work with Victoria Police to increase their knowledge of potential danger spots.

This includes identifying where individuals may be violent, have a mental health issue, use drugs or own a firearm.

“There were 9331 special patient information records in our system in October 2015,” Mr Stephenson said.

“Of them, 816 relate to aggressive situations, with 39 records stating police may be required.

“A further 355 records relate to safety (please see definition below), with 47 records stating police may be required.”

ON BEHALF of Cancer Council Victoria, I would like to sincerely thank the community of Casey for supporting the recent Casey Relay for Life.

More than 3850 participants in more than 100 teams relayed on Friday 4 and Saturday 5 March, walking overnight to show that hope lives in Casey for those experiencing cancer.

During the overnight relay there was laughter, tears and, no doubt, a few sore feet.

But the strength shown by local Casey community members was a public display of support for anyone in the City of Casey with a cancer experience.

So far over $330,000 has been raised by Casey relayers which will help ensure Cancer Council Victoria’s support, prevention and research programs continue.

The money raised at Casey Relay for Life will help Cancer Council Victoria continue to provide programs including: - Funding some of Victoria’s brightest researchers and their cutting-edge projects each year to help detect, treat and beat cancer.

- Important prevention programs like PapScreen Victoria, Quit and SunSmart to make sure people have all the information they need to cut their risk of cancer. A particular focus this year is on improving bowel screening rates, with the latest statistic showing that only 32.8 per cent of eligible people in the City of Casey participate. We recommend bowel screening every two years between the ages of 50 and 74.

- Support services including a pro-bono legal assistance service to help those affected by cancer who may be struggling with issues such as wills, early access to superannuation, debt matters or returning to work.

- Our information and support line, Cancer Council 13 11 20, where qualified cancer nurses give people information and support.

- Our Living with Cancer Education Program, which provides information for people experiencing cancer, facilitated by trained health professionals.

Bike noise nuisance I WRITE to ask why police are not taking action in regard to loud motorbikes roaring through Berwick - mainly down the High Street, Clyde Road and Lyall Road - clearly in breach of existing laws controlling noise emission.

Key times are, of course, the weekends, public holidays and morning and afternoon peak times.

The car yards, local hotel and outside eating areas seem to be the areas where these bikers like to display this behaviour.

Residents are entitled to live in a reasonably quite environment without this unnecessary and unlawful nuisance.

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH THEIR watchful eye was on the brink of closure last month, but now Casey Neighbourhood Watch (CNW) is celebrating a new era for crime prevention in the south east.

With a fresh chairperson and a new committee, former secretary of five years, Jen Baird, who drove the campaign for new members, is thrilled at the outcome.

“We have a committee of 12 with five new members including chairperson Rob Ward and to think it’s now able to go on is fantastic, this group seem very enthusiastic,” Ms Baird said.

A struggling Neighbourhood Watch teamed up with Inspector Paul Breen in February this year, where the top cop put the responsibility back onto the community members.

Ins Breen said CNW is a crucial “institution we can’t let die”.

“As local commander I’m sick to death of hearing people say what are we doing about the high crime rate, ice, hoons, so I say what the bloody

hell are you doing?”

“Don’t tell me out of the 29 suburbs in Casey we can’t find someone from each suburb to become NW champions,” he said.

And a month on, 11 Tooradin residents have put their hands up to start a committed crime prevention group in the sleepy hollow.

Ms Baird, who spoke at a recent Tooradin community forum, said the town’s interest in Neighbourhood Watch has steadily grown.

“We had a meeting in February last year and six people in Tooradin wanted to start a committee, this year we have 11 and they have all applied through NW Victoria to get started,” Ms Baird said.

“The Tooradin branch would be amalgamated with CNW, but it will give them an avenue to council and police, rather than struggling on their own.”

Ms Baird said the forum showcased the “concern” around crime in Tooradin.

A GREYHOUND trainer has been resentenced over striking a greyhound to the head with excessive force as he tried to place the dog into a starting box at Tooradin Trial Track.

Bradley Keel, 37, was disqualified for 18 months - with 15 months suspended for three years - and fined $750 at the Victorian Civil Administrative Tribunal on 8 March.

It superseded a wholly-suspended 18-month disqualification and $750 fine from the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board in September.

Greyhound Racing Victoria stewards had appealed the board’s decision to VCAT. In her VCAT decision, Judge Marilyn Harbison stated she took into account the “significant hardship” that would rise from Keel’s disqualification.

Keel would effectively lose his housing and income during disqualification, Judge Harbison said.

“Some period of disqualification is in my view appropriate having regard to the serious nature of this offence and the need to send a clear message to the industry that this behaviour will not be tolerated. “(Greyhounds) are not money making objects - they are defenceless living beings and the community expects they will be treated with compassion and care, in private and in public.”

In sentencing, she accepted Keel’s “positive contribution” to greyhounds for 20 years, there was no evidence of him committing other similar acts, and that he was unlikely to re-offend.

Judge Harbison said the act had not been clearly captured by two hidden cameras, which were installed to prove illegal live-baiting at the track on 23 December 2014.

She noted Keel had not been involved with live-baiting, which is the use of live piglets, rabbits and possums as lures to ‘blood’ greyhounds.

Keel, a trainer for 20 years, later admitted to investigators he had struck the dog to the face, which “jarred back” the dog’s head.

He conceded to stewards it was a quick “brain snap”. He had been angered by the dog’s non-cooperation.

Judge Harbison was unable to find whether Keel had punched or slapped the dog. She agreed with both parties

that the force was excessive but not brutal.

She noted video footage showed the dog “happily wagging its tail” and interacting well with Keel at the end of the trial. There was no evidence of injury.

“It shows a degree of comfortableness between Mr Keel and the dog which is a contrast to what one may have expected if this use of force were a regular pattern of conduct towards the dog.”

Keel’s lawyer argued the respondent had also suffered serious threats after a social media campaign released footage of the incident.

The footage was looped to appear he struck the dog several times, Judge Harbison noted.

PERHAPS the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) sounds just too good to be true.

How else to explain the hope-lined anxieties among a 100-strong audience at an NDIS information forum on 8 March?

More than two years until the scheme’s rollout in Melbourne’s south east, NDIS representative Anne Skordus was there to soothe doubts.

Funding would double, and at last people with a disability had more freedom to choose how to spend their funding, she said.

There was “no maximum and no minimum” funding package, NDIS would not affect participants’ disability support pensions and there would be few application forms.

There would no longer be a waiting list for funded equipment such as wheelchairs.

There are possibilities outside the square that weren’t possible in the pre-NDIS era, as demonstrated by a story shared by a father.

He told of getting a group of parents pooling together for a supported share-house for their kids.

Long-suffering families told the forum how under the current system, their funding had “run out” several years too early, and how they’d received precious little respite.

There was a whiff of doubt whether governments would retain a fully-funded NDIS. How would it help the drastic shortfall of supported accommodation, an audience member asked.

“If we can’t do something to deliver ... for your brother and son to be supported without being reliant on mum and dad in their eighties, then we’ve failed and I’m determined not to fail,” Ms Skordus said.

Another attendee asked if incompetent service providers would come in and create a ‘pink batts’ debacle.

The government was still working on accreditation standards and safeguards, Ms Skordus said.

A mum of an autistic son without government support said she was willing to move to an earlier rollout area, out of desperation.

Casey lags behind in Pap test

A report has revealed that Casey is in the bottom 20 Victorian suburbs for regular Pap tests.

The data collected from the Victorian Cervical Cytology Registry 2014 annual report has shown a large drop in screening rates for women aged 20 to 29 across the state.

Statistics released on Monday 14 March outline less than half of the women aged 20 to 29 years are being regularly tested for cervical cancer.

Queenscliff ranks as the state’s most screened with 76.2 per cent of women undergoing two yearly Pap tests, and Melbourne, the lowest municipality at 42.7 per cent.

Casey isn’t far behind the CBD, with the rate of Pap smears in the region dropping from 57.70 per cent in 2012-2013 to 56.10 per cent in 2013-2014.

Not screening is the biggest risk factor for cervical cancer, according to the

statement, and Minister for Health Jill Hennessy advised leaving the awkward thoughts at the door saying, it’s “not worth risking your life over.”

“If you’re overdue for a test, book in today because that awkward Pap test could save your life,” Mrs Hennessy said.

The report detailed that 74 per cent of Victorian women diagnosed with cervical cancer had either never had a pap test or had let their screening lapse prior to diagnosis.

“My message to young women is do not become complacent. Even if you have had a HPV vaccine, you still need to have a regular test,” Mrs Hennessy said.

Medical director of the Victorian Cervical Cytology Registry Professor Dorota Gertig said the drop is concerning.

“While many of Victoria’s young women have had the HPV vaccine to protect against most strains of HPV that cause cervical cancer, these women should not be complacent,” she said.

“It’s vital for all vaccinated and unvaccinated women to have regular Pap tests to be sure.”

Removal of routes A report has revealed Casey is in the bottom 20 Victorian suburbs for regular Pap tests.

The annual expo aims to promote cloth nappy use and showcase the different brands, styles and benefits of cloth nappies.

There will also be organic foods, sustainably produced toys and other green products for sale at the event on Saturday 19 March, from 9am to 2pm, at the Casey Civic Centre.

Casey mayor Sam Aziz said the council advocated for the use of cloth nappies due to their environmental and financial benefits.

“While disposable nappies are cheap-

er to purchase per nappy, each child will go through thousands of them,” Cr Aziz said.

“The savings from using cloth nappies over disposables has been estimated as being up to $5000 per child.”

“Disposable nappies, which are made mainly from oil, a non-renewable resource, wood pulp and a host of dif-

ferent chemicals, contribute more than two tonnes of waste per child to landfill, which take hundreds of years to break down.”

Cr Aziz also noted that cloth nappies aren’t just terry towelling anymore.

“There are now many different styles and brands, they’re better fitted, have covers and liners and are more practical,” he said.

Casey offers a monthly rebate draw for residents who purchase cloth nappies.

“If they send in their receipts for cloth nappies, they have a monthly chance to win half of their purchase price back, up to the value of $300,” Cr Aziz said.

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH TWO current bus routes would be removed and three added to cater for the growing region, under Public Transport Victoria’s (PTV) proposed overhaul of the Casey bus network.

Casey residents can have their say on the proposal which would see changes made to bus services in Cranbourne, Lynbrook, Hampton Park, Hallam, Endeavour Hills and Berwick through drop-in sessions with a PTV representative and an online feedback questionnaire.

The proposal outlined on the PTV website would see 12 current bus routes realigned and 22 routes left unchanged.

City of Casey mayor Sam Aziz is backing the proposal, saying the “improved bus services were a key focus of council’s transport advocacy campaign”.

“The review of bus services in Casey is long overdue with most services indirect and infrequent, with a typical service frequency of 45 minutes and some whole suburbs missing out on a service altogether,” he said.

“During Casey’s citywide transport survey, 78 per cent of participants told us they want more reliable bus services while 65 per cent want a bus stop within a 15 minute walk, with a bus every 15-20 minutes.”

Under PTV’s proposal routes 797 and 896 will be removed and replaced by new high frequency and direct services.

PTV will be hosting four community consultation sessions in late March.

Ms Peulich has backed local residents’ concerns saying; re-routing traffic heading along Abbotts Road between Cranbourne, Lynbrook, Lyndhurst and beyond would add an extra 1.5 kilometres each way and further burden the surrounding road network.

“It takes up to 45 minutes to cross Westernport Highway on Thompson Road, 35 minutes at

Hall Road, and up to 40 minutes on Glasscocks Road - a dirt road!” she said.

“It can take 40 minutes to get down Abbotts Road to turn at South Gippsland Highway and now they’re planning to extend that by 1.5km, as well as putting more pressure on the Pound Road intersection which will impact on South Gippsland Highway, Greens Road and the Dandenong Bypass.”

But Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said there were other options on the table.

“The LCRA has mucked this up,” she said.

“I’ve raised this with Minis-

ter Allan as the minister responsible and have got her assurance that what was put forward is not the position of government.”

The Level Crossing Removal Authority (LCRA) will host an event “for input into design options” where they will present “a detailed overview of all options under consideration” and facilitate discussion around each option.

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH PEARCEDALE Primary School student, Zahli CousinsEarle, couldn’t wait to cut her waist length golden blonde locks off, in fact she was counting down the days to her big chop.

It’s the first time ten-yearold Zahli has participated in the World’s Greatest Shave and a chat with her mum Carolyne Cousins about cancer was all it took.

“One of my friends had a

cancer scare and I was discussing the different types of cancer you can get with Zahli when she decided to donate her hair to be used to make a wig for cancer patients,” Carolyne said.

Zahli had her mind set on raising $100 but has ended up with more than $1100 with the help of Pearcedale Primary School, who watched on as Carolyne cut Zahli’s hair at a recent school assembly.

“She was so emotional about it,” Carolyne said.

“Not because she was losing her long hair, but because of the cause - she couldn’t believe she could raise so much money.”

Zahli has been eagerly waiting the special day for more than a month; her long plaited ponytail is still sitting in a zip lock bag and will be donated to Variety or those specialising in wigs for alopecia sufferers.

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH A PANEL of three Casey women had everyone thinking at this year’s International Women’s Day (IWD) Casey Multi-faith Network event.

‘Pledge For Parity’ was the worldwide theme on Tuesday 8 March, but Casey locals touched on ways families can empower their daughters, wives and girlfriends even more.

Panellists, Casey multi-faith network president, Stephanie Saunders, Elaine Smith from the Victorian Immigrant and Refugee Women’s Coalition and Amena Ziard, a student at Monash University spoke on different issues affecting women of today.

Secretary of the Casey multi-faith network, Naureen Choudhry said the warm and positive energy in the room was inspirational.

“We had more than 80 people from all walks of life asking questions to the panel and we also had Year 11 students from Nossal High School present,” Ms Choudhry said.

“It was fantastic to hear people’s passionate views on

women’s issues and the future of women’s equality.”

Narre Warren North, international relations student Amena explained why she identifies as a feminist and how her early life in a male dominated, Saudi Arabia instilled in her a sense of resilience.

Ms Saunders reminded the audience of the repercussions of sexualising women, expressing her distaste in men calling her names such as ‘darling’.

“We need to be mindful of the terminology we use to address women, as casually calling them darling can sexualise them,” Ms Saunders said.

Park women’s friendship cafe, Eileen Smith, articulated the importance of providing a safe community environment for women of culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds.

Stating that her vision for Australia is one where people of all backgrounds can get along with one another and lend a helping hand.

Casey Inspector Paul Breen was also present at the inaugural Casey IWD forum along with guest speaker Freda Miriklis, Co-Chair of Commonwealth Businesswomen’s Network who spoke on advancing women in society and business.

Help for mums with multiple births

IT’S been 12 months since the St John of God Berwick Day Oncology Centre opened its doors at Kangan Drive, Berwick.

Prior to the opening of the new facility, St John of God Berwick Hospital had provided oncology care in a five-bed unit at the Gibb Street Hospital where it identified the need for a larger facility to meet the growing demand in the local area.

In 2014, some 1260 patients were treated in the Gibb Street Oncology Unit. It was also recognised that easy access to cancer treatment meant a higher chance at survival.

“Cancer survival is improved by offering services that allow early diagnosis and improved access to treatment,” said Lisa Norman, SJOGBH CEO. “St John of God Berwick Hospital offered five chemotherapy chairs on site at our hospital from 2013 but demand for oncology services in the area had increased significantly and we responded to the needs of a growing community.”

The 12-chair day oncology centre opened in early 2015 and is part of the specialist centre at 55 Kangan Drive, a facility that is also home to Radiation Oncology Victoria, St John of God Pathology, MIA Radiology and HPS Pharmacy, making it a hub for cutting edge cancer treatment.

At the day oncology centre, care comes with a smile. 151390 Centre has successfully seen an additional increase in an excess of over 1000 patients during its first year in operation. Ms Norman also said the centre had the capacity to grow as required to 20 chairs.

The centre was designed to create a calming and tranquil atmosphere for patients undergoing cancer treatments, with natural light, large windows offering views of Berwick and surrounding suburbs and a wellness centre.

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH CASEY and District Multiple Births Association (CDMBA) has been supporting new families for 28 years and celebrated their longstanding friendships this week.

The organisation’s 118 local members, all seeing double and some triple, came together for Multiple Birth Awareness Week.

Pakenham mum of triplets and CDMBA secretary Rebecca Leeuw said the week was about ensuring all families knew where they could find help and support in what could be a daunting experience.

“It’s imperative to have the experience and advice available to new parents because having two or more babies at once is obviously very different to having one,” Ms Leeuw said.

“It’s trickier logistically to get around and do things and it’s hard to settle two or more crying babies at once.”

Ms Leeuw said the support of local, experienced parents comes in handy emotionally as well.

“Especially those first few months there’s a higher risk multiple birth babies will need to stay in hospital longer and not all prospective parents are ready for that,” she said.

The awareness week, “Leave no family behind” runs from Sunday 13 to Sunday 20 March.

Hop in for a grand effort AN artistic mob of kangaroos will welcome patrons into the sixth annual Casey-Cardinia Grand Art Exhibition at the Cardinia Cultural Centre from 18-20 March.

The event will showcase the finest art and woodart by leading Victorian artists, featuring nearly 600 exhibits from Victoria, Northern New South Wales and Tasmania.

The 15 kangaroos created

by David Doyle will be a feature at the entrance and will take guests into the exhibition, which will include amazing contemporary and avant garde paintings alongside the best traditional paintings and incredible sculptures and woodart.

Four leading Victorian artists will demonstrate their skills and art on Saturday 19 March: 11am Australian Artists Colour Pencil Society president Karina Griffiths; 1pm leading Victorian pastel artist and art gallery owner Lyn Mellady; 3pm internationally accredited oils and acrylics wildlife artist Eric Shepherd.

On Sunday Glo Edkins will be doing portrait sketches with charcoal. There will also be demonstrations in woodart, scratchboard, color pencil and wood burning throughout the exhibition.

Emerging artists will exhibit their works and patrons can pick up fine art before these

artists become well known and recognised.

Entry to the exhibition is adults $7 school students $3 and includes admission to the demonstrations.

The exhibition is not a fundraising event and is organised

by Provenance Artists a not for profit society of local artists who paint at their two studios in Pakenham and Berwick Springs. Opening times are from 10am until 6pm on the Friday and Saturday, and 10am until 3pm on the Sunday.

Turning wood into art a solid effort THE Berwick District Woodworkers Club is again partnering with Provenance Artists to present the Woodart section of the Casey/Cardinia Grand Art Show.

Now in its third year, the Woodart section continues to grow. The number of entries has increased by more than 30 per cent on last year’s show and covers a wide spectrum of high quality wood art.

As well as the exhibition pieces, a range of other work from club members and exhibitors will be on display and for sale at discounted rates.

Club members will provide scroll saw and woodturning demonstrations throughout the show and members of the Marquetry Society of Victoria will be on hand on the Saturday to demonstrate this ancient and intricate woodart discipline.

Club president Len Preece and Woodart coordinator John McMahon are excited to present the exhibition, which they say is designed not only to attract experienced woodart practitioners, but also encourage novice and less experienced woodartists to display their work.

“This show is unique in Victoria, in that no

other art show includes a dedicated woodart section,“ Mr Preece said. “It provides a unique opportunity to showcase fine woodwork of all kinds and to show that this is as much an art form as pottery, glasswork, and sculpture.“ The Berwick District Woodworkers clubrooms and workshops are located at the Old Cheese Factory, Homestead Road Berwick, and are open Monday to Friday between 9am and 1pm. The Amendment came into operation on 25 February 2016, the date this notice was published in the Government Gazette.

Amendment C215 amends the Schedule to Clause 43.01 (Heritage Overlay) to permit prohibited uses under the Heritage Overlay for a number of properties within the City of Casey’s growth areas, amend the description to HO152, amends map 12HO and include an Incorporate Plan to the Schedules to Clause 43.01 and Clause 81.01 associated with Heritage Place HO152.

Cranbourne create history

By JARROD POTTER DDCA - TURF 1 GRAND FINAL REVIEW BEYOND extraordinary.

It’s a match without compare in local cricket history and nor will it ever be surpassed as the most thrilling end to the DDCA Turf 1 season.

The greatest finish a cricket season has seen unfolded at Keysborough, as Springvale South (138 and 87) was beaten by Cranbourne (65 and 5/163) in a Turf 1 reverse-outright thriller.

SATURDAY - SPRINGVALE SOUTH AND CRANBOURNE 1ST INNINGS Just when you think grand finals can’t get any more exciting, Springvale South and Cranbourne upped the intensity for the final salvo of 2015/16.

It started horrendously for the minor premiers, losing Nathan King (8), Harry Staude (0) and Dylan Quirk (12) for next-to-nothing.

Martin Kelly (3/24) and Steve Spoljaric (2/30) chipped away at the top order before the introduction of Wookey Medallist Matt Chasemore (2/29) added more pain to the Bloods’ innings.

Craig Slocombe (21) went from belting the stuffing out of the attack, to succumbing to Chasemore in a quickfire knock that left the side spinning at 4/71. The initiative was left to Sri Lankan import Michael Vandort (58), who braced himself and held on.

In the end the Bloods managed to work their way into the clash through a remarkable lower order partnership.

Mitchell Forsyth (16) played out of his skin to hold on with Vandort as the duo added 26 for the seventh stand.

Vandort raised the bat for his 50, but soon fell to young leggie Cam Dinger (3/24) after an impressive 176-ball occupation of the crease while Forsyth carried on with the tail to add the final few drips to the Bloods’ bank of runs.

The fading light only renewed Springvale South’s hopes as the openers went on the warpath. Jarrod Armitage (7/20) was beyond sensational in his first-up eight over spell - cannoning through Brayden Roscoe (1) before finding the edge of Jake Harrington (6) and Chasemore (1). Lucas Ligt (4) set himself to see out the remaining overs and held on throughout the chaos unleashed by Armitage, Tim Ford (1/4) and Nathan King (0/6). Craig Slocombe saved his ace for the last over of the day though, bringing on his young part-timer Brayden Sharp (1/0).

Sharp managed to flight a left-arm miracle, taking arguably the biggest wicket of his career to get rid of the dogged Ligt, caught brilliantly by King.

Spoljaric (20) and Stuart Plunkett (12) were left to see out the day, but both would struggle early on day two.

SUNDAY - CRANBOURNE 1ST AND 2ND INNINGS, SPRINGVALE SOUTH 2ND INNINGS Everything was primed for Armitage to begin a day two rampage as he shattered Cranbourne’s hopes ... or at least everyone thought he did. The sun baked the deck and Armitage flayed all and sundry.

Spoljaric held on as long as he could against Armitage, but was caught after one from King feathered off the glove and hit squarely into Dylan Quirk’s gloves.

and Armitage (1/58) copped a pasting off the Cranbourne champion, but when he chopped on against Slocombe, the match took one last twist.

It left 49 to get off only six overs, but that wasn’t a problem for Chasemore (59no), who lit up Keysborough with the second barrage of boundaries.

He was joined by miracle-man himself Dinger (10no) who slapped one of his first balls into the rope to cut the deficit to 18 runs off 20 balls.

King had another chance to finish the job, but missed the stumps after a yes-no run-out chance went Cranbourne’s way - seemingly as everything else did in the last few hours of Sunday.

Chasemore finished the job with a whopping six - smashing a windshield in the process - before sealing the deal with a four to start the celebrations.

Armitage seared through the Eagles to take a grand-final seven-for and give his side the first innings victory and what most people assumed would be the game as the last runs were squeezed from Cranbourne to get to 65.

Some seemed resigned to the fate and plenty of supporters believed it was done and dusted as Keysborough emptied quickly after the last wicket of the first innings.

Cranbourne, somewhat begrudgingly at first, returned to the crease to try for one last miracle ... . that miracle came in the form of young spinner Dinger (6/44).

In tandem with Chasemore (1/21),

Dinger rattled through the Bloods’ attack and set the stage for a race to the finish.

When everyone else was getting ready to wave the white flag, Dinger picked off Nathan King (7) Dylan Quirk (12) and Harry Staude (9) then captured the prized wicket of Craig Slocombe (5).

His efforts helped set the stage for the race to the finish - 27 overs or 10 wickets for Springvale South and the Twenty20-esque chase of 161 for Cranbourne.

Not much hope was given for Cranbourne in the second innings and it started slowly through Stuart Plunkett

(9) and Brayden Roscoe (16).

But that was all part of Spoljaric’s (61) master plan - saving himself and Chasemore (59no) for first and second drop and let the openers get the shine off the new ball.

It worked to a tee as Spoljaric showed his calibre on the big stage once again. He was primed for another masterclass at the crease, as Spoljaric began unloading on the tiring quicks.

Arguably a better grand final innings than his century for Parkfield in 2013/14, Spoljaric thumped five sixes down the ground to send the Bloods scrambling to all points on the rope.

Premiership win to Dingoes

By JARROD POTTER DDCA REVIEW - GRAND FINALS TURF 2 AFTER narrowly avoiding the noose last weekend, Keysborough (116) put its head straight back into the hangman’s way as it was rolled quickly

by Dingley (6/178).

The top order imploded against Dingley’s new ball specialist Andrew Dalby (4/30). Searing through the top four for a pittance, Dalby pushed his season tally to 30 wickets and put the minor premiers right on the back foot.

The only tandem to show great resistance was Shakeel Ahmad (48) and Yoshan Kumara (19).

The duo worked their way towards tea in a steady partnership for the fifth wicket. Ahmad - the only Knight to really fight back against the Dingoes - was en route to his half-century and beyond before an unbelievable run out sent him back to the Hallam sheds. Dingley celebrated the must-take wicket and soon had the pair as Kumara’s stand ended after as he edged one to the cordon a few balls later.

Dingley’s stop-start chase - hampered by the thunderbolts Kumara (3/27) was flinging at their heads - got most of the way to victory after captain Travis Sawers (26) saw the shine off the new rock alongside Christo Otto (18). Scott Tutton (57no) was set at stumps and finished the job to earn the Dingoes the win.

TURF 3 Escaping early disaster against Beaconsfield (168), Buckley Ridges (188) managed to pile on the pain late in the day at Reedy Reserve. The start was disastrous as the Tigers ripped shreds from the Ridges’ order. At 6/69 - following another barrage from Beaconsfield skipper Dylan Freitag (4/47) - Buckley would’ve been pleased with triple figures, let alone the tally it has forced upon the minor premiers.

He united with his son Jonathan D’Rozario (11no) to pile on a 50-run stand and give the Ridges’ something tangible to defend. The Beacy response was in fine fettle at first, but then another feat of D’Rozario brilliance, this time from Jonathan (5/56) stole the show. He rattled through Matt Golding (37) in his first senior five-for while Thomas Burke (3/12) finished off the Tigers’ tail.

TURF 4-7 Springvale (139 and 170) proved too much for Lynbrook (63 and 126) on a wicket-laden day.

Thilanka Harsha (35) went the smack against the Lakers, but couldn’t hold on for long against the likes of Stephen Veal (4/22) and Jesse Walia (3/29). From 3/91 the wheels completely fell off as Springvale collapsed to finish at 139 after 41 overs. Springvale turned its woes onto Lynbrook

as Lois Twohig Reserve bore witness to more carnage. Sachintha Rajapakse (3/12), Mark Weeding and (3/21) tore through Lynbrook’s attack, setting the stage for a second bat late on day one. Lynbrook endured the worst of Springvale’s hitting to force a second innings and a crack at the reverse, but fell short after 32 overs.

Akaati Pupuke (116) led his Berwick Springs (9/330) Turf 5 side to a virtually unassailable position against Buckley Ridges (150). Cashing his first century on the biggest day of his cricket career, Pupuke paired off with Mitchell Mason (37) and skipper Jeromy Cooray (42) to punish anything Buckley Ridges could throw at him. Like the Titans of mythology Pupuke razed his opponents at Carroll Reserve and left a Titan-ic headache for the chasers. Farhan Hussain (2/77) toiled all day for his side. Basil Hobkirk (77) endured the Titans’ attack but didn’t have enough support around him as the side fell 180 short.

Narre North (177) took Beaconsfield’s (6/178) bowling to task in Turf 6, but the Tigers response was emphatic. Samuel McDavitt (3/26) was Beaconsfield’s best with the ball while Martin Oke (2/31), Lachlan Laird (2/34) and James McLean (2/35) charged in all day. Don Kerslake (55 ret hurt) started the chase off strongly with help from McLean (38) and a late flourish from Allan Roberts (18no) to finish the day on top.

Berwick Springs (91 and 2/31) held on in a frenetic Turf 7 finish against Cranbourne (84) as neither side managed to dominate the bowling.

Michael Randall (3/28) and Jason Quigley (3/3) rattled through the Titans’ top order - with the only knock of note coming from skipper Ravin Punchihewa (38). The Eagles’ response was even worse though as only Randall (24no) stood tall.

Hayden Johnson (3/19) continued his all-year round sporting form with a sharp first up spell before Jason Miseski (2/17) knocked over a couple more before stumps. After 22 more overs of Titans’ batting, the Eagles shook hands and called it a day.

DDCA JUNIOR GRAND FINALS SHARING the premierships around, sides from Narre South all the way to Noble Park, clubs around the region got to celebrate victories of their own to end the DDCA’s 2015/16 junior cricket season.

UNDER 17 Springvale South (7/233) proved too potent in the top division showdown against Endeavour Hills (129) across both days of the Under 17 1 finale. Brayden Sharp (78) and Matt Wetering (50) started the day in style with victory in the junior ranks propelling the two before the Turf 1 showdown, while Jacob Bakes (5/37) rattled through the Eagles on Sunday. Arshian Ul Haq (35) was the best of the Eagles’ batsmen.

Berwick (88) had its hands full against Narre South (7/131) as the Bears went into hibernation with the bat. Harrison Kidd (36) and Kevan Weerapperuma (23) put on a match-winning partnership of 64 on Saturday, before Ravneet Sandhu (5/13) excelled for the Lions with the ball. Rhys Cannon (3/22) and Louis Nichols (2/28) were the best of the Bears’ bowlers.

Beaconsfield (121) couldn’t hold off Fountain Gate (2/127), especially opening Karandeep Singh (81no) who passed the 400-run mark with the impressive victory. Jarrod Hocking (32) and Will Ryan (30) were Beacy’s best batsmen.

UNDER 15 Berwick Springs (4/201) smashed Buckley Ridges (117) on the back of a captain’s knock from Matthew Briggs (51ret no). Briggs set the stage for the Titans alongside Harrison Whitehead (39), Ashvin Adihetty (34) and Rivin Rajapaksa (30). A steady supply of wickets help the Springs take the trophy as Whitehead (3/15) capped off a strong all-round performance.

North Dandenong (9/187) defeated Berwick Springs (121) as Lachlan Chugg (48) tried his best against the Northerners with the bat while captain Brayden Tisdale (3/8) and Daniel Davies (3/15) were just as strong with the ball.

Dinger spins winning web

By JARROD POTTER TWO years ago Cam Dinger wasn’t even a spinner.

But at the insistence of Cranbourne coach Brett Lewis he endured the necessary hard slog to become one.

He rattled off the overs throughout the years, even when the times were their toughest, and Dinger’s work-rate was rewarded in the biggest way possible on Sunday.

When his side looked down and out in the DDCA Turf 1 grand final, falling for 65 in the first innings chasing Springvale South’s 138, Cranbourne turned to the 22-yearold spinner and hoped for something big.

Dinger delivered in spades - the leggie flew through the Bloods’ middle order to claim 6/44 off his 16 overs. He took the crucial wickets of Nathan King and Craig Slocombe before slicing through the tail to keep Cranbourne alive and ready to hunt down the 161 runs needed.

He didn’t just contribute with the bowling though.

Dinger went out late in the day as Cranbourne started losing wickets and smacked 10 not out to support Matt Chasemore and win the rarest of all rare victories: a first-XI

reverse-outright premiership.

Dinger was named Man of the Match and the magnitude of the Eagles’ achievements left him fairly speechless.

“I’ve still got no words for it - three and a half hours ago we weren’t even looking like we were going to go out and field,” Dinger said.

“Next thing you know we get a couple of quick wickets and the game was on - we rolled them and I still can’t believe we’re here.

“When I was sitting out there watching from the sidelines I was thinking if we’d even get close, but then I got out there and took the game on - Cheeks (Chasemore) took the game on and it paid off.”

With the chips down early on Sunday, Dinger stayed the course to take his first five-wicket haul and best bowling figures as he kept the ball up to trap the Bloods on the crease.

“From the start when I started it was spinning a lot and they weren’t using their feet, so I thought ‘why not flight it up, bring them in, put a bit of pressure on’ and it paid off,” Dinger said.

Spolly leads the way

By JARROD POTTER STEVE Spoljaric might have saved his best for last.

The Cranbourne all-rounder made amends for the first innings in the DDCA Turf 1 grand final against Springvale South with one of those innings you’d have to see to believe in the second.

Captaining his second Turf 1 premiership, after winning with Parkfield in 2013/14, Spoljaric’s contribution sent the run-rate soaring as the Eagles fought their way back from the unlikeliest of positions early on day two.

After losing on the first innings, Cranbourne set up the chance for victory with incredible bowling from spinner Cam Dinger, but still needed to get a whopping 161 off only 27 overs at the end to seize the victory.

Spoljaric arrived at the crease 10 overs into the chase too - after opener Stuart Plunkett fell to Craig Slocombe - but he made the next 11 truly count.

He planted himself and swatted the Bloods into oblivion.

Spoljaric punished King in particular - taking the Springvale South all-rounder for three sixes in an over at the Cheltenham Road end, with one only just clearing Tim Ford on the boundary.

The field spread in a heartbeat when Spolly went on his rampage, but he still found the gaps, worked the singles and even played a few uncustomary ramp-shots to keep the score flowing.

When the dust on his incredible

innings settled and Spoljaric walked back to the sheds, he had set the stage with 61 off 41 balls and put Cranbourne within striking distance of the flag.

“What can you say?,” Spoljaric said. “Just look at the scoreboard it’s entertaining enough isn’t it?”

“I didn’t give us much hope because most of us were exhausted, but I said with (Cam) Dinger bowling the way he did today - all I did was catch them for him.

“I wasn’t confident at all - most of us were quite sore and couldn’t move too well, but big Dinger turned it and me and Cheeks (Chasemore) finished it off with the stick there.”

He trusted the openers to see off the shine then let himself and Chasemore hunt down the whale of a target.

“The ball for the first five or six overs was a bit tricky, but after that we did know what it would do - we bowled with it and knew it would be much flatter,” Spoljaric said.

“You’ve just got to give me and Cheeks a target, freedom, then we can be big trouble to any attack and that’s what you saw today.”

Speculation is rife that Spoljaric - who has moved down to Gippsland and commutes back up to Cranbourne regularly - is set to farewell the competition after six phenomenal seasons.

“Like any job, you get a job and you’ve got to fulfil it and that’s it maybe I can retire now,” Spoljaric said. “I don’t know yet - my wife won’t let me - I’ve got to play with the three year old now so we’ll just wait and see how we go.”

“A couple of clubs have spoken to me, but as I’ve told them all I’ve only had this game on my mind and that was today, so I’ll have a good think about what I’ll do next year and go from there,” Dinger said.

He wanted to thank the club and especially Lewis for honing his skills and trusting him with the great responsibility in the grand final.

“Just the club - they’re a fantastic

club and I’ve played all my juniors there,” Dinger said. “One bloke in particular - Brett Lewis - I’ve only been bowling leg-spin for two years and he stuck at me the whole way,” Dinger said. “I couldn’t have been anywhere near what I did today without him.

“Given me 100 per cent support and trust, straight out with each other and I think that’s part of the reason we’ve been so successful and won today.”

Chase for more glory

By JARROD POTTER BREAKING his league medal hoodoo - after consecutive runner-up finishes in the Victorian Premier Cricket's Jack Ryder Medal - Cranbourne's Matt Chasemore earned the DDCA&rsquo;s highest individual honour on Wednesday night.

The Eagles' all-rounder flew to the top of the Alan Wookey Medal table late in the 11-round vote-count at the Dandenong Club.

After a slow start to the 2015'16 Turf 1 season, Chasemore flew home; accumulating 428 runs and 16 wickets in his return to Cranbourne and club cricket for the first time in 17 years.

He racked up the votes on the way to 32 for the night, claiming three maximum vote-getting performances against Narre Warren (Round 5) Buckley Ridges (Round 9) and Dandenong West (Round 11), to earn his first Wookey Medal.

Berwick skipper Jarrod Goode (29 votes) flew in under the radar and almost pinched the medal from Chasemore, taking the lead in the final round after a five-wicket haul against Lyndale.

But Chasemore regained his mantle soon after - taking the maximum from a swashbuckling 75 against Dandenong West in the season finale.

I just tried to put myself in the game - whether its bat or ball - try to execute the skill and I've been fortunate this year,&rdquo; Chasemore said.

It&'s good - a little bit embarrassing as you would think the players that get recruited straight out of grade cricket should win them.

But it&'s great to be back in the DDCA and hopefully I can forge a little career in the next 10 years and see what I can make of it.&rdquo; It was an exercise in slowing down on and off the field for Chasemore, after a duck and a three to start off his campaign, as he needed readjust his line-and-length and mindset to combat the local standard. But he found his rhythm and was trading blows with the opposition after that

Much of Cranbourne's success boiled down to Chasemore and team-mate, also four-time Wookey Medalist, Steve Spoljaric (27), who traded blows throughout the count but in the end Spolly fell just short of another addition to his already extraordinary trophy cabinet.

It was a complete night for the Casey clubs as Berwick's Ryan Crawford (26), Heinz Southern Districts Michael Davies (22) and Narre Warren's Kaushalya Weeraratne (22) rounded out the top five.

At the halfway mark Buckley Ridges' import Susantha Pradeep (17 votes) had taken the lead, but couldn't match the start to his inaugural DDCA season, while Malinga Bandara (18) was the highest placed of the Dandenong-area players.

By DAVID NAGEL A LONG-TIME supporter of the Robbie Griffiths stable rang the Cranbournebased trainer on Sunday to tell him how his imagination had been running a little wild.

“Robbie, I had a dream yesterday that we won the Newmarket Handicap,” said part-owner of The Quarterback, Craig Pearce.

Pearce wasn’t dreaming however, with The Quarterback giving Griffiths his first taste of Group 1 glory in Australia’s greatest race for sprinters, the $1.25million Lexus Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on Saturday.

After 22 years as a trainer - top-10 in Victoria for the last decade - Griffiths had finally cracked it at the elite level, with a horse that he had snuck out of a hospital bed to buy at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale back in 2012.

“I was pretty crook, but made sure I got out of hospital to go to the sales because

Peter Ford and I bought Suraya, the grandmother of The Quarterback, 20 years ago,” Griffiths said.

“Peter said we have to buy this Street Boss-Soorena colt and the rest, as they say, is history.”

And history runs deep with Griffiths, his staff, and his connections that he was quick to share the plaudits with after his biggest success.

“I understand how AFL footballers feel now when they win a premiership because it’s a team effort, my name is in the racebook but it’s the whole package,” Griffiths said.

“The feeling is addictive, if you could bottle something like what we felt on the weekend, you’d be a billionaire for sure.

And because it’s a team effort it makes the satisfaction and euphoria even stronger because you get to share it with others.”

His best mate, racing commentator Deane Lester, has been with him from the start and also owns a share in the horse.

some of the greatest names of the Australian turf.

“It’s an unbelievable industry because we all compete, but when someone wins, people are jumping out of trees to congratulate you. That comradery is something else; it’s quite humbling to be honest and to see a bloke like Peter Moody burst through traffic to offer his congratulations, that’s pretty special and a great memory.”

Griffiths said he will never forget the feeling as The Quarterback crossed the line, with Craig Newitt aboard, a neck ahead of the Darren Weir-trained Black Heart Bart.

“I’m only five-foot-five-and-a-half but I was walking 15-feet tall and my feet haven’t touched the ground since and I don’t think they will for a while yet,” he said.

“We’ve been so close for so long and to finally break through is unbelievable really.”

THE Pearcedale Cricket Club and its devoted members haven’t exactly done it easy in recent years.

Five seasons ago the Dales only had two senior sides and the second XI didn’t win a game. Having just two junior sides as well only served to make their situation even more dire - the seniors were struggling, and there weren’t enough youngsters coming through to bolster the club.

Players had become disinterested and participation had dropped to dangerously low levels.

But through sheer grit, hard work, and bringing back some of their own into the fold, the Dales’ first XI is now on the verge of its second premiership in two seasons.

There are two youngsters from the club about to head to England as part of a league representative touring side, and Pearcedale now has five junior teams and around 70 Milo Cricket participants.

At a senior level, they earned promotion out of the Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association’s (MPCA) Sub-District ranks last season with a premiership win over Rosebud, and now they’re in a great position to win their way through to the top Provincial tier for the first time.

One of the key figures behind

the surge is former Victorian Premier Cricket all-rounder Chris Dew. He took a brilliant 12/68 against Rosebud in last season’s decider, and on the weekend hit a stunning undefeated 159 not out to take his side to 9/272. He then capitalised on that momentum to take the first two wickets of the Flinders innings to have the side 2/37 going into the final day’s play at Tyabb this Saturday.

Pearcedale past president and first XI player Mitch Andrew said the impact the likes of Dew, Shane Maggs (32), and skipper Kaine Smith (18) had on the playing group was massive.

“We had a key group of players but just missed that x-factor and that real strong batsman,” Andrew said.

“Dewy (Dew) struggled to adjust in his first year - it took him a season or so to get used to playing our level of cricket - but we’ve got him, Maggs and Smith and the three of them have so much experience.”

When Dew came to the crease on the weekend, his side was 2/3 and staring down the barrel of being dismissed for under 100. But through a combination of great strokeplay and batsmanship, he and Maggs then steadied the ship and controlled the innings.

Now, they’ll look to finish it off in style with the ball this weekend.

Lions win a thriller

By RUSSELL BENNETT WGCA PREMIER - GRAND FINAL REVIEW AT 3.45pm on Sunday Pakenham was in the box seat at 3/113 - chasing just 218 for victory and to cap off a rare unbeaten season with a premiership flag. Not since Beaconsfield knocked off Cardinia for the 2010/11 title had a top side gone all the way through a campaign undefeated.

But Kooweerup was never going to just hand its crown over - not without one hell of a fight.

Batting was far from easy on day one, with Chris Smith (1/37) and Russell Lehman (2/59 from a staggering 35 overs) tying the Demons down. Jess Mathers (49) top-scored with a confident, counter-punching knock which would have been even more significant had the Lions not forfeited the chance to take a swag of early wickets - through gut-wrenching no-balls and dropped catches. Chris O’Hara (41) hardly played the most attractive of innings - he was given key lifelines early and struggled to pierce the field from that point on. But he refused to throw his wicket away. With the heart of a lion he dug in and, along with Mathers and fellow big-name recruit Jake Bardwell (34), was a huge part of the reason for their side posting a 200-plus target. Jason Williams (5/22) was the difference-maker late on the first day’s play - removing all five of the Demons’ final five wickets.

But the ebbs and flows in this game’s momentum still had their biggest extremes to come.

From 3.45 on Sunday, the following two hours produced some of the most gripping cricket of the Premier era.

From there, the situation got a whole lot more dire for Pakenham with two of their leaders - skipper Dom Paynter, and Jason Williams - falling in successive deliveries, and big hitter Sean Gramc (7/146) departing after going for that one big shot too many.

Pakenham still needed 72 for victory. The Demons and their faithful were up and about - they could smell blood.

But all season the Lions have been as good as the sum of their parts ... unbelievably good.

Rob Elston and Ben Shipperd held strong, as if their lives depended on it, before finally seeing off O’Hara and Mathers and finding a way past Cody Miller and Matt Davey in the dying overs.

A three-wicket win (7/218) had never been so thrilling, and the pair - much like Lehman earlier in the game - had proven that it’s not the run of form that counts. It’s being able to produce in the biggest moments on the biggest stage.

In other local results, Tooradin’s Sub-District side (2/77) claimed an emphatic win over Pakenham (73) on day one to collect its fifth flag in the division in the past seven seasons.
