A School of Educational Enterprise ST MONICA’S College, Epping is a vibrant coeducational community of students, staff and parents, which embodies the truths and values of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in its structures, processes and styles of relating. The College was founded in 1964 by the Sisters of the Good Samaritan to serve the needs of Catholic girls in the northern suburbs of Melbourne. Male students were first accepted in 1978, when a second junior campus was opened. A rural campus, Ostia, was established in 1999. Ostia is in the village of Strath Creek.

St Monica’s College is acknowledged in the wider community as a leader in the area of literacy and numeracy and is committed to supporting all students in the development of these essential skills. The College employs specialist literacy and numeracy staff to coordinate a whole school approach in which all teachers share responsibility for developing students’ reading, writing, speaking, listening and critical thinking skills.

The needs of all students are recognised and catered for, and the College employs specialist staff with expertise in the education of highly able students (HORIZONS Accelerated Learning Program), students with learning difficulties and well established integration programs.

The College’s LOTE Learning Centre incorporates the Theatre of All Nations. The College teaches Italian, French, Greek, Spanish and Japanese. The College runs

a bilingual immersion program (CLIL) in Japanese and in Italian.

Demonstrating its commitment to senior studies, the College provides an extensive range of VCE offerings with small class sizes to ensure high results. Meanwhile, VET and VCAL programs are offered on site and these are proving popular for many SMC families. Students have access to the VCAL Hub, a purpose built facility.

The College also has a strong commitment to the pastoral care of students, and incorporates a pastoral program in the curriculum for all Years 7 to 12 students.

Four College Educational Psychologists are available to students and parents.

The co-curricular programs are vast, and St Monica’s College is recognised as a leading sporting school locally, nationally and now internationally. The Debating and Public Speaking Society, extensive music and performing arts programs, and ever-popular activities such as chess and art clubs flourish at the College.

Recent building projects include a new Trade Skills Centre on the senior campus and an award-winning library on the junior campus. In April, 2015 a multimillion dollar expansion program Project Forward was launched, ensuring exceptional facilities will continue to be developed at the College.

Mater Christi students have had personal devices since 2011 when the College commenced its 1:1 program.

The campus is fully networked with high-speed wifi and all classrooms have interactive whiteboards. Effective and appropriate use of technology is essential for any workplace or school.

Technology does not alter the fundamental importance of the 3 R’s, nor the 4 C’s of contemporary learning – creativity, critical thinking, communication and collaboration. Nor does it alter our focus to equip our students with the attitudes and skills to become informed, compassionate and creative young women.

However, technology creates and supports extraordinary learning possibilities.

Technology has also expanded communication options within our community. Students and teachers can easily communicate to clarify points, check progress on tasks, catch up on missed work or provide a word of encouragement. Parents can readily access information about student attendance and progress, contact subject teachers, receive sms notifications and follow news and activities of the College.

This year, it has been cold and foggy during the winter months and good footballers still come out of Assumption College. However, Assumption College has grown and developed and now can lay claim to a host of other achievements. When Euphrasie Barbier created her order in France in 1861, she took on the name Mother Mary of the Heart of Jesus. Celebrating 120 Years of Education in 2016

In 2016 Mount Lilydale Mercy College celebrates 120 years of educating students and active community participation in the Lilydale area. In 1976 the College became a coeducational school after serving as a school for young ladies since its foundation in 1896.

The College has a strong tradition of student leadership. Numerous opportunities and courses are offered, both formally and informally, to students throughout their secondary education providing them with leadership training and skill development. Our students relish the opportunity to make decisions, take on responsibility and have an input into the direction of the College through the leadership programs offered. We offer a broad curriculum that caters for a diversity of learners. At Year 9, students are able to select elective subjects that cater for their specific interests. In Year 10, students can select a VCE subject or a VET certificate course. Students in Years 11 and 12 have the option of two distinct pathways of VCE or VCAL. VET programs can be selected in either of these qualifications and VCE students in Year 12 may also select a university enhancement subject.

MACKILLOP The Chapel of Saint Mary of the Cross THE opening and blessing of ‘The Chapel of Saint Mary of the Cross’ occurred on 2 March 2016. The ‘Chapel of Saint Mary of the Cross’ has been a labour of love for the College community and it is quickly becoming the heart and soul of the school.

The Chapel has many significant features including stained glass windows designed by Josephite Sister, Therese Quinn. The windows symbolically explore MacKillop College’s connection to the local area, as well as those individuals significant to the development of Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop’s spirituality. Two

bronze statues by Chris Sage feature prominently in the chapel. The ‘Triumphant Jesus’ hangs over the altar and is a focal point for all liturgy. In the forecourt a bronze of Mary MacKillop engaging with two playful children can be found. The Chapel precinct also includes an outdoor ‘Stations of Cross’, which incorporate contemporary photography in an attempt to engage students in the message of Christ’s passion. In front of the Chapel a prayer labyrinth has been designed to allow students and staff to reflect on the message of Jesus’ crucifixion to help reinterpret it for themselves.

Complementing the STEM programs and Digital Technologies curriculum, the Makerspace allows students to experiment with 3D printing, robotics and circuits and utilise this learning in their mainstream classes.

SCIENCE The introduction of bio molecular technology has enabled up- to- date procedures such as gel electrophoresis experiments and DNA fingerprinting. Data luggers/ data sensors allow the girls to concentrate on detailed analysis of data rather than data gathering.

We have made real connections with outside organisations such as the AgriBio research group at Latrobe University. In Semester One 2015 our scientist in residence program was part of ongoing research into the disease carrying capabilities of local mosquitoes.

The OLMC research was a ‘FIRST’ in examining mosquitoes within Melbourne as AgriBio has only sampled areas in regional Victoria.

The integration of technology and an innovative curriculum delivery links classroom work with student interests. It has resulted in a growing interest in science subjects throughout and the girls enjoy this modernised way of learning.

By Stephen Elder, Catholic Education Executive Director IT WAS while reading the thoughts of parents who transferred to one of our new schools last year that I discovered a delightful term to describe what makes Catholic education special. It’s not something you can see, hear or touch, rather something you experience.

Our students display strong performance in many areas of learning, however there is an ongoing drive to make sure everyone who attends a Catholic school has the same opportunity to perform at the levels to which they’re capable and be the best that they can be.

Today, parents who live in the Diocese of Sale have an even greater choice of a Catholic education for their children, with the opening of two primary schools in consecutive years. St Clare’s Primary School at Officer opened its doors at the start of last year and St Thomas the Apostle Primary School opened in Cranbourne East in 2014.

Director of Catholic Education in the Diocese of Sale, Maria Kirkwood, said the Diocese was geographically quite large, covering much of the state’s east. “The Diocese runs from Melbourne’s outer south-eastern corridor, including Clyde, Clyde North, Officer, Drouin and Warragul, through to Bairnsdale, Lakes Entrance and Orbost,” she said.

“Many of these places are continuing to grow at a fast rate, so we want to keep pace with these growth areas to ensure families have access to a Catholic school.

“Our Catholic schools continue to offer an education in the best Catholic ethos and tradition. Catholic schools look at the whole person and while academic achievement is very important, people appreciate it is not the only factor to be considered. Developing the creative side of a young person through sport and the arts, and giving them the life skills to cope with the demands of a competitive society are also critical.”

said Ms Kirkwood. “Parents understand that Catholic schools provide a well-rounded education in a caring and pastoral environment. To instil the right values in young people who will go on to be good citizens once they have left school is also an important goal,” she said.

Ms Kirkwood extended a warm welcome to all new families to Catholic schools in the Diocese of Sale in 2016. “The start of any school year is an exciting time for Catholic school communities. I would like to wish everyone, including the principal, teachers, administration staff, students and parents, all the best for 2016.

“Hopefully everyone is well rested after the summer break and is prepared for what lies ahead. For young students, including Preps, it can be slightly daunting as they settle into their new classroom environment. The new school year can also be overwhelming for parents who are sending their children off to school for the first time.

“For the more senior students there are decisions to be made around future careers. I would like to wish them all the best in whatever profession they choose, and despite the inevitable pressure of exams, sincerely hope they enjoy the year,” said Ms Kirkwood.

“The fact that our new strategic plan includes a provision for 14 primary and five secondary schools in and around Melbourne and Geelong in such a short time is a sense of great pride for everyone involved in Catholic education,” Executive Director Stephen Elder said.

Eighty five per cent of Catholic secondary students reported never experiencing bullying, a figure that reinforces internal data indicating a decline in Catholic school bullying and provides positive reinforcement of the many programs aimed at creating zero-bullyingenvironments.

“Our aim is to provide a values-based school education for every Catholic family that chooses one, and that means our planning department is very busy right now,” Mr Elder said.

“Looking out for others and working towards the greater good are two of the most important values of a Catholic education,” Mr Elder said.

Those plans revolve around a concept of ‘overarching social hubs’ that directly connect schools with kindergartens and early learning centres, community services, health, sport and local business.

“We instill a richer and fuller understanding of social and moral values and know that fuels the desire to take action and leadership, and help make the world a better place.”

“We are committed to the notion that a co-ordinated, community based approach is the best way to build new facilities and, in turn, provide school choice for parents,” Mr Elder explained.

Long standing academic achievement is one of the main reasons for the appeal and popularity of Catholic schools. And once again 2015 testing produced outstanding results.

SLEEP AND YOUR CHILD Tips and techniques to help your child get a good night’s sleep BEDTIME STRUGGLES Many parents have problems getting their children to bed, especially with pre-school children.

Many children will use excuses to avoid going to bed such as “I need to go to the toilet”, “I need a drink”, “I just need to tell you something”. This can often delay the sleep time significantly. What can parents do?

1. BE CLEAR ABOUT WHAT YOUR CHILD NEEDS What a child wants is not always what they need.

Although some children want to stay up and have difficulty getting to sleep, this does not mean that they do not need sleep. As the parent, you need to decide and be clear on what is reasonable bedtime behaviour and what changes you expect. Once this is decided it is easier to stick to the limits set. Limit setting often benefits the child in more ways than just improving sleep, as they feel secure and contained.

2. RULES Explain the new rules to your child during the day. Don’t tell them the first time when they’re stalling at bedtime.

Remember this is not punishment so try to engage the child. It will help if your child knows what to expect.

Expect some resistance. Your child probably doesn’t want to change, so things may get worse before they get better. Be consistent.

3. CHILDREN NEED A CONSISTENT BEDTIME ROUTINE Have a predictable, enjoyable routine with calm activities.

Avoid stimulating activities such as watching TV, running around and computer games.

Try not to start negotiating with the child at bedtime. Do not enter a battle with the child if they protest. Calmly remind them of the new rules and continue.

Put your child to bed and leave the room while they are still awake.

4. WHAT THEN? If your child calls out: Calmly tell your child it’s time to sleep.

Do not enter into a discussion.

If they get upset return to reassure them but be brief and limit what you say.

Be ‘boring’.

If your child comes out of their room: Calmly return your child to bed.

Remember this is not punishment, but be firm.

If your child stays in bed, praise them.

Behaviour change can be challenging and it may take some time before you see improvement.

5. REINFORCEMENT Rewards are an important part of any behaviour change.

The idea is to focus on success, not on failure, give rewards immediately.

NIGHT-TIME WORRIES It is not unusual for some children to have night-time worries or fears. Sometimes parents will describe their child as being ‘a bit of a worrier’. Helping them overcome their night-time worries teaches them skills they can use in other areas. Some children suffer from a more general anxiety which may need further treatment.

TALKING ABOUT IT Younger children may say they fear the dark or monsters.

Older children may not be able to say what they are worrying about but have trouble falling asleep.

They often worry about not being able to sleep and will tell you “I can’t sleep”. It is important not to disregard your child but at the same time you shouldn’t give too much importance to irrational fears. It is important to give your child the message that you have confidence in them to deal with this. Therefore acknowledge their feelings but support them in dealing with their fears in a positive and independent way. It is a good idea to discuss it during the day, away from their bedtime. During the day your child is more likely to be feeling confident and can reason.

ROUTINE It’s important to stick to your child’s routine. Your child may need reassurance and support but try to avoid getting into a routine that has your child depend on you to fall asleep, such as having to lie with them, or having the child in your bed. Being firm in limit setting makes your child feel safe. It also tells them you have confidence in them to manage this. Giving in to their requests may give them the message that they are not going to be OK and that there is something to worry about.

EXTERNALISING FEARS This is a way of taking your child’s fears and worries and giving them to someone else to worry about, or putting them somewhere else for the night.

‘Monster traps’ are something many children and parents have found helpful. This can be talked about and set up during the day and is a way of making the child feel safe.

Be creative with it.

‘Worry box’ works in the same way for older children with vague worries. They can put the worries in the box and think about them tomorrow.

A special ‘fairy’ or protective ‘dragon’ is a way of using a child’s imagination in an adaptive way. The fairy or dragon looks after them and takes away their worries.

Planning this ahead of time and talking about it during the day, when they feel confident, will help them feel confident at night.

RELAXATION Even young children can learn relaxation techniques.

These include breathing exercises, muscle relaxation and positive imagery (going to a happy place). This has many benefits. Concentrating on relaxation is a distraction and can stop your child worrying.

Night-light – As long as it does not stop your child from falling asleep a dim night-light can be used.

POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT Children often get lots of attention for having fears or worries which may encourage the behaviour.

It is important to reward children for being brave and for managing their worries. Sticker charts work well even in older children. Break the process down into different parts and reward your child for each part so that they feel they are doing well.

Dyslexia diagnosis gives parents and child a sense of direction WHEN Mary’s* son was diagnosed with dyslexia in Grade 2, she knew there was a long process ahead of them.

But thanks to the wonderful staff at Caulfield Grammar School, her son is now thriving and his self-confidence has boomed.

Mary said the diagnosis several years ago gave her and her husband a sense of understanding as to why their son had been struggling to read and write in school.

“It gave us a sense of direction,” Mary said.

“Dyslexia covers a wide range of learning difficulties, and can affect different children in different ways. From the word go he struggled to recognise letters and write his name.”

Mary said her son was tested for a number of different issues, but it was when they saw a child psychologist that the diagnosis occurred. Since then, she and her husband, as well as the staff at Caulfield Grammar School have been working closely with him to improve academically and gain self-confidence.

“He was too young to understand anything about dyslexia when he was first diagnosed, but we have always been honest with him about it,” she said.

“It was only when he was in about Grade 4 that he started to realise he had learning difficulties. We told him he had dyslexia and had to work harder than most of his peers.”

School set up support programs to help him,” she said.

“He was offered the reading recovery program, which is usually only offered to older people, and he persisted with that until the end of Grade 4 or 5. Even then he had English support.”

Mary said that due to the diagnosis, and needing extra support, her son’s confidence suffered in primary school and took an even bigger hit before he made the transition to secondary school.

“He went into (secondary school) terrified because suddenly he was leaving a class of 50 kids to enter a class of 180 kids. He didn’t know where he would be in the pecking order or how he would cope. It was a big change, let alone when you also have to struggle with dyslexia,” she said.

“He started off on a bit of a back foot, failing his first maths test. But he had a fabulous teacher who put in place a whole range of programs to help him, and before long, he worked out he could do it. He has gone from being a student where he had to be supported, to now being able to get A’s on his own. It’s huge for his confidence.”

Mary said that while her son was thriving in school, he still had to put in a lot of hard work and dedication.

“It’s a long process,” she said.

“He can’t be too relaxed about his school work. He knows he has to put in a lot of hard yards.

Mary’s son is now in Grade 8 and is now thriving thanks to encouragement from his family and support programs at the school.

“It’s heartbreaking as a parent to see your child struggle but he’s doing so well now. He’s even started to read for his own enjoyment. It’s fabulous to see.”

EYE CARE OPTOMETRY Watch your child for signs of poor vision or crossed eyes.

Eye Doctors Be sure to make vision care and eye checks a part of your child’s routine medical care.

Different kinds of doctors offer eye care, and the names can be confusing: •฀ Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who provide comprehensive eye care with medicine and surgery.

•฀ Pediatric ophthalmologists are doctors who have additional special training to treat kids’ eye problems.

•฀ Optometrists provide services that may be similar to ophthalmologists, but they don’t perform surgery.

Some optometrists specialise in kids’ eye problems.

•฀ Opticians fit and adjust eyeglasses.

Eye Exams Routine medical exams for kids’ vision include: •฀ Newborns฀should฀be฀checked฀for฀general฀eye฀health฀ by a pediatrician or family physician in the hospital nursery.

•฀ High-risk฀ newborns฀ (including฀ premature฀ infants),฀ those with a family history of eye problems, and those with obvious eye irregularities should be examined by an eye doctor.

•฀ In฀the฀first฀ year฀ of฀ life,฀ all฀ infants฀should฀be฀ routinely฀ screened for eye health during checkups with their pediatrician or family doctor.

•฀ After฀ age฀ 5,฀ routine฀ screenings฀ should฀ be฀ done฀ at school and the primary doctor’s office, and if symptoms such as squinting or frequent headaches occur.฀(Many฀times,฀a฀teacher฀will฀notice฀that฀a฀child฀ isn’t฀seeing฀well฀in฀class.)

•฀ Kids฀ who฀ wear฀ prescription฀ glasses฀ or฀ contacts฀ should have annual checkups by an eye doctor to screen for vision changes.

Spotting Eye Problems Signs that a child may have vision problems include: constant eye rubbing; extreme light sensitivity; poor focusing;฀ poor฀ visual฀ tracking฀ (following฀ an฀ object);฀ abnormal฀ alignment฀ or฀ movement฀ of฀ the฀ eyes฀ (after฀ 6฀ months฀ of฀ age);฀ chronic฀ redness฀ of฀ the฀ eyes;฀ chronic฀ tearing of the eyes; a white pupil instead of black.

In฀school-age฀children,฀other฀signs฀to฀watch฀for฀include:฀ being unable to see objects at a distance; having trouble reading the blackboard; squinting; difficulty reading; sitting too close to the TV. Watch your child for signs of poor vision or crossed eyes.฀ If฀ you฀ notice฀ any฀ eye฀ problems,฀ have฀ your฀ child฀ examined right away so that the problem doesn’t become฀permanent.฀If฀caught฀early,฀eye฀conditions฀often฀ can be corrected.

Common Eye Problems Several฀eye฀conditions฀can฀affect฀kids.฀Most฀are฀detected฀ by a vision screening using an acuity chart during the preschool years.

•฀ Amblyopia฀ (“lazy฀ eye”)฀ is฀ poor฀ vision฀ in฀ an฀ eye฀ that฀ may appear to be normal. Two common causes are crossed eyes and a difference in the refractive error between฀ the฀ two฀ eyes.฀ If฀ untreated,฀ amblyopia฀ can฀ cause฀irreversible฀visual฀loss฀in฀the฀affected฀eye.฀(By฀ then,฀ the฀ brain’s฀ “programming”฀ will฀ ignore฀ signals฀ from฀that฀eye.)฀Amblyopia฀is฀best฀treated฀as฀early฀as฀ possible, ideally before a child is 8 years old.

•฀ Strabismus is a misalignment of the eyes; they may turn฀in,฀out,฀up,฀or฀down.฀If฀the฀same฀eye฀is฀chronically฀ misaligned, amblyopia may also develop in that eye. With early detection, vision can be restored by patching the properly aligned eye, which forces the misaligned one to work. Surgery or specially designed glasses also may help the eyes to align.

•฀ Refractive errors mean that the shape of the eye doesn’t฀refract฀(bend)฀light฀properly,฀so฀images฀appear฀ blurred. Refractive errors also can cause amblyopia: o Nearsightedness is the most common refractive error฀ in฀ school-age฀ children฀ and฀ is฀ poor฀ distance฀ vision฀(also฀called฀myopia),฀which฀is฀usually฀treated฀ with glasses or contacts. o Farsightedness฀ (also฀ called฀ hyperopia),฀ which฀ is฀ usually treated with glasses or contacts. o Astigmatism is imperfect curvature of the front surface of the eye, which is usually treated with glasses if it causes blurred vision or discomfort.

Glasses and Contacts Kids฀ of฀ all฀ ages฀ –฀ even฀babies฀–฀ can฀wear฀ glasses฀ and฀ contacts.

Keep฀these฀tips฀in฀mind฀for฀kids฀who฀wear฀glasses: •฀ Let฀kids฀pick฀their฀own฀frames.

•฀ Plastic฀frames฀are฀best฀for฀children฀younger฀than฀2.

•฀ If฀older฀kids฀wear฀metal฀frames,฀make฀sure฀they฀have฀ spring hinges, which are more durable.

•฀ An฀elastic฀strap฀attached฀to฀the฀glasses฀will฀help฀keep฀ them in place for active toddlers.

•฀ Kids฀ with฀ severe฀ eye฀ problems฀ may฀ need฀ special฀ lenses฀called฀high-index฀lenses,฀which฀are฀thinner฀and฀ lighter than plastic lenses.

•฀ Polycarbonate฀lenses฀are฀best฀for฀all฀kids,฀especially฀ those฀ who฀ play฀ sports.฀ Polycarbonate฀ is฀ a฀ tough,฀ shatterproof, clear thermoplastic used to make thin, light฀ lenses.฀ However,฀ although฀ they’re฀ very฀ impactresistant, these lenses scratch more easily than plastic lenses.

Babies born with congenital cataracts may need to have the cataracts surgically removed during the first few weeks of life.

THE ACADEMY Spreading her Wings - Academy provides an environment that allows students to excel VICKIE Waid never imagined how much she would blossom in high school. A shy primary student, Vickie was unsure what to expect when she started year 7 at the Academy of Mary Immaculate in 2010.

She needn’t have worried.

Within a year Vickie had joined the school band, where she still plays the trumpet, and the Social Justice Group, which organises fundraisers for various causes and raises awareness of current Justice issues.

Teachers encouraged Vickie to be herself, as did her parents, Saville, a GP, and Najua, a lawyer. One of four siblings, she has also attended Girl Guides for many years. “The Academy was a revelation,” Vickie says.

“I felt I had hit my stride – I became involved.”

Victoria. She spoke about her journey and how her family, Girl Guides and Academy helped inspire her to make a difference in law and politics.

Currently finishing year 12, studying English, Chemistry, Further Maths, Legal Studies and Food Technology, Vickie plans to visit India with her father next year to volunteer again. She then hopes to work in law and international relations before entering politics to help address the lack of female representation.

“I think there are definitely barriers for women, locally and globally,” she says. “People stereotype women. I believe that educating women can get them out of that cycle of poverty.”

This focus on personalised education is not new.

Founded in 1857 by the Sisters of Mercy, the Academy of Mary Immaculate is one of Victoria’s oldest schools, overlooking the Exhibition Gardens opposite Melbourne Musuem.

“For some of the girls, it was the first time they had swum in a swimming pool,” she says. “To this day, the laughter and happiness on their faces motivates me to help stand up for them. Everything that I have done and hope to do in the future is because of the impact of that trip.”

It caters for all abilities and has Enrichment Programs starting in year 7 with English and Mathematics, expanding to other subjects in later years. The year 9 Synergy Program connects students to their city of Melbourne and in year 10 they enjoy Work Experience and Community Action Weeks. High achievers can accelerate into VCE or VET units.

In year 11, Vickie was a delegate for Plan Australia’s Because I’m a Girl campaign, which highlights inequality for women and girls. She surveyed schools and presented the resulting Our Book of Ambitions to politicians in Canberra.

As part of that program, Vickie appeared in a Plan International advertisement and met some of her political hero’s in Michaelia Cash, Julie Bishop, Natasha Stott Despoja, Adam Bandt, Lucy Wicks and Kate Ellis.

“The people running it were saying ‘you’re the leaders of the future’,” she says. “I’d say we’re leaders now.”

Vickie attended the Australian Youth Climate Coalition conference in Sydney and this year addressed Victoria’s State Parliament for the National Council of Women

If the assessments show a hearing impairment, your audiologist will first confirm the results.

“If you got a hearing test result that was showing a hearing loss, we’d always retest it to make sure the results were consistent before we decided on a course of action,” says King.

When a child has a normal tympanogram, it may be (the acoustic reflex) in the middle ear. The absence of this reflex to different sounds gives information about the auditory system.
