Cityâ€™s crime spate By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A serious-crime wave over the past week has kept police busy in Geelong and the Surf Coast. Two armed robberies, a pair of shootings, a gang-bashing, two serious car accidents and a rape investigation have kept police on the run. Local area commander Inspector Graham Banks said some of the serious crimes this week were drug-related. â€œItâ€™s just one of those situations where individuals are behaving poorly at the same time,â€? Insp Banks said. â€œBut we certainly donâ€™t need a week like this every week.â€? Armed Crime Squad detectives have charged a woman following an armed robbery at an NAB bank branch in Newcombâ€™s Bellarine Village Shopping Centre. A man aged 75 waiting in a queue detained the 29-year-old woman after she and a male accomplice armed with a shotgun entered the bank about 3pm on Wednesday. The man fled in a grey or light-coloured VN Holden Commodore sedan. Police charged the Geelong woman with armed robbery and firearm offences. She appeared in Geelong Magistratesâ€™ Court yesterday morning. Continued page 5

Bail refused on charges By ALANA MITCHELSON A Breakwater man has been refused bail over alleged drug trafficking after he was found with prohibited weapons and a “large amount“ of stolen goods. Police found Bradford King, 26, “asleep“ with another man in the back seat of a station wagon parked at Breakwater on 12 January, prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Kylie Jane told Geelong Magistrates Court yesterday (Wednesday). “A welfare check was performed and Mr Bradford was found to be in possession of GHB.“ Text messages on the accused’s phone revealed discussion about the alleged trafficking of GHB, ecstacy and cannabis, the court heard. Informant Senior Constable Robin Johnson

told the court Mr King refused to comment in an interview at Waurn Ponds Police Station. A search of his Breakwater residence revealed a shed containing various drugs, $3215 in cash and about 180 stolen items, valued at $150,000. “A number of prohibited weapons were located, including knuckle dusters in his backpack.“ Mr King’s barrister, Richard Backwell, said his client should be bailed while police tested the alleged drugs, which could take “in excess of six months“. “I submit that stable accommodation, a recent offer of employment and acknowledgement of the two months already spent in custody as cause for the granting of bail.“ Magistrate Peter Mellas described the prosecution’s case as “relatively strong“.

“The prosecution’s submission exposes the alleged trafficking of quite harmful drugs and the commerical transacting of property in exchange for those drugs,“ he said. “Mr King’s prior history is peppered with instances of failing to comply with court orders, such as breaching an intervention order, therefore there is a significant risk of him not complying with bail. “I don’t think accommodation at the proposed household is appropriate in the circumstances of the resident being a full-time carer for his mother. I also don’t think I can rely on the offer of employment letter as cause for bail.“ Mr Mellas refused bail and adjourned the case for a contested mention on 26 April.

Agencies merger Geelong’s two largest human services organisations have agreed to merge. Karingal and St Laurence Community Services said their boards had unanimously supported the merger and signed a memorandum of understanding. The agencies could reach more clients and offer greater support to disabled people as a single entity, they said. Karingal chairman Rod Payne and St Laurence chair Dr Patrick Lockie said the combined operational experiences and public policy expertise would result in a stronger voice to advocate on behalf of the disabled. “Our merger would significantly build on the strengths of both organisations, potentially bringing increased prosperity to the Barwon region and to Geelong in particular. “We expect a recommendation about this potential merger would be put before the members of both organisations for their consideration by mid-2016.”

Rahmani review An Afghan man living in a Belmont church has won a review of his case for asylum after winning support from hundreds of Geelong Christians, according to Federal Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson. Cr Lyons said the silent film was symbolic of Geelong’s recent history. “Like the Tin Man, Geelong traditionally had a

strong practical purpose. Battle over zones A state review has reignited a battle over residential height restrictions in Geelong. Residents first protested the planning changes in 2014, concerned about new zoning categories and increased height limits. But Newtown Action Group’s Vicki Baensch said a new state list of “improvements” would take local planning backward. The changes would “blur the lines“ between neighbourhood and general residential zones and strip residents of “protection and certainty“ on planning issues, she said. “It once again makes every application an adventure and forces people to go to VCAT (Victorian Civil and Administration Tribunal) to fight a planning permit. It means applications are on a case-by-case basis again. “This smacks of developers protesting they’re being locked out of areas. Geelong is already doing the right thing regarding planning, so the zones should now be left as they are. Ms Baensch urged concerned residents to lodge submissions at dtpli.vic.gov.au by 5pm Monday.

Buses still as rail fails By ALANA MITCHELSON Most Geelong commuters will continue riding buses despite the State Government announcing that more than 90 per cent of disrupted regional V/Line services will return to normal in the next fortnight. Fifty-nine per cent of Geelong services will continue using replacement buses from 21 March, including all but one peak-hour service. South Barwon MP Andrew Katos accused the government of “smoke and mirrors” when it announced the 90 per cent return figure this week.

The government’s priority should be returning peak-hour services, he said. “They’re fixing Geelong services at times of the day that aren’t really useful to most people. “I would’ve thought that fixing peak hour services would be the most important because that’s where frustration and demand is at its highest. “If you have to run replacement buses while the wheel wear issue is fixed why not run them off-peak times?” Seven Geelong services will return as VLocity trains on weekdays from 21 March, according to V/Line spokesperson Ebony Jordan. “What it means for the Geelong line is that

more services will be running as trains with fewer coach replacements,” Ms Jordan said. “In two weeks’ time, 98 services will be trains and 10 will operate as coaches on weekdays as we continue our wheel replacement program. “Alongside our wheel replacement program, we’ve introduced a number of measures to reduce the rate of wheel wear. These include increasing rail greasing to reduce friction, replacing short sections of track and speed restrictions on some line sections. “Everyone at V/Line is working to return all services to normal as quickly as possible and this is still on track for mid-year.”

Mums battle through and learn together By ALANA MITCHELSON A group of Geelong teen mums is studying the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning with their babies in class. And demand is likely to create a second group of young mums in Diversitat’s Young Parents Program, which has expanded to include the full range of VCAL subjects. The course allows students to develop work skills with other young mums going through similar experiences. The program recently moved to a permanent facility in central Geelong with a “baby-proofed” classroom, cots and storage for prams. Program co-ordinator Helen Foord said it was the only VCAL program in Geelong where babies were allowed in class. The program was tailored for parents aged 15 to 21 who hadn’t completed Year 12 or equivalent so they could return to education in a school classroom-like environment while still caring for their babies. “It’s not for everyone to go back to their old

school after having their babies and to put their school uniform back on and face their peers,” Ms Foord said. “I think there are lots of negative things out there about teenage parents. These girls are coming back to school with a brand-new baby. I don’t

know if I could have done that. It’s a huge achievement. “They’re doing a really amazing job. “The new work-related units will open their mind up to what opportunities are out there work-wise.”

Crime spate hits in city and coast Continued from front page A hunt is underway for the man, with police urging him to contact them. Armed Crime Squad detectives also dealt with a robbery at Buckley’s Entertainment Centre on Monday night. Police were told a man and a woman in disguises and armed with a gun entered the Fellmongers Road venue just before 11pm and demanded cash. The pair left empty-handed and no-one was injured, police said. The same night a Lara man was airlifted to hospital with gunshot wounds after he approached people sitting in a car outside his Alison Street property. Armed Crime Squad detectives were told the 49-year-old victim was shot after he spoke with a man in the car about 9pm. An unknown man in a silver vehicle dropped off a 23-year-old woman with a gunshot wound at Geelong hospital about 5am Monday. Torquay Crime Investigation Unit detectives released images of a vehicle and a man wanted for questioning about a robbery of three German backpackers at Lorne on Saturday. Police said three men in their twenties were sitting in a rental car at Teddy’s Lookout when a man and woman approached them about 4am. The pair, wearing balaclavas, smashed the car windows with a baseball bat and demanded the victims hand over their belongings. The offenders were driving a dark-coloured Ford Territory with stolen plates, ZVX-678. Police also this week charged a 53-year-old Bell Post Hill man over an alleged sex assault at Lorne in 1986. He was bailed to appear at Geelong Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday. Double Take Morning radio host Matt Tilley has clearly seen the signs in Geelong. Or maybe that should be 'sign’ singular, judging by a post on his Twitter account this week. The broadcaster sent out an image of an overly officious parking sign (pictured), which really needed just one time advisory rather than the three all giving the same information. “Thanks Geelong, you’ve given me my favourite sign ever,“ he tweeted with shot. You’re welcome, Matt, since you obviously parked outside 9am to 5.30pm - in either direction on any day!

Flight’s fatal last route By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A flight-path map has revealed the twisting route of a plane that fatally crashed into the sea off Barwon Heads in January. The Piper PA-28 Cherokee aircraft was on a flight from Moorabbin airport to King Island when it crashed, killing all four on board. The four aero club members, Daniel Flinn, Donald Hately, Ian Chamberlain and Dianne Bradley, all from Melbourne’s south-east and aged in their fifties and sixties, died in the 29 January crash. An Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) report said investigators had yet to determine who was flying the plane before it crashed.

Witnesses including other pilots reported visibility in the area where the plane came down was reduced by cloud and rain, the report said. The aircraft left Moorabbin Airport midday and recorded air traffic control (ATC) data showed it climbed to 1000 feet then turned southwest near Seaford. The aircraft then climbed to 1400 feet tracking over Port Phillip Bay, then west towards the Bellarine Peninsula. The ATC data also showed that, after passing over Point Lonsdale, the pilot carried out a series of turns, before there was a final steepening and rapidly-descending turn. A witness fishing about 3km off the coast near Barwon Heads reported seeing the aircraft de-

scend out of cloud in a steep, nose-down attitude with the right wing lower than the left. A few seconds later the aircraft hit the water about 200 metres from where the witness was fishing. Water Police took more than a week to recover the plane wreckage from the sea floor during poor conditions. However the wings were not recovered. The continuing investigation will exam the pilot’s experience and qualifications, the wreckage recovered, maintenance of the plane, and the weather in the region at the time. A final report is expected by January 2017.

Corio greyhound trainers Tom and Andrea Dailly experienced the highs and lows of the sport last week with their top dog Dyna Double One. The black greyhound took out the $250,000 Australian Cup but was retired to stud by his owners almost immediately afterwards. In the process Dyna Double One became only the third dog in greyhound history to earn $1 million after also winning the Melbourne Cup last November. It was the first time the cups double had been taken out since 1980. Dyna Double One finished his career with 54 starts for 31 wins, nine seconds and six thirds with a staggering $1,160,316 in prize money. The winnings were second only to his recently retired kennelmate Fernando Bale ($1,299,370), also

trained by the Daillys. “He was a one in a generation type dog,” Tom Dailly told Geelong Indy. “Of course we are rapt that he won but he became a victim of his own success. “They are hard to find but we have to cop it on the chin and keep going. “The dogs become part of the family and it’s a bit of blow when they move on.” Dyna Double One was only a pup when he arrived but immediately showed a lot of ability, Mr Dailly said. Dramatic surf rescue at cape Jan Juc surfer Tristan Forras has helped rescue a pair of swimmers at treacherous Cape Woolamai beach, while ironically participating in a water safety campaign. Forras was one of a number of surfers participating in a Play It Safe by the Water campaign at the dangerous beach. The #isurfwith Victorian Tour is a high performance surf coaching program focusing on equipping young male surfers in coastal areas of Victoria to act as ‘everyday lifesavers’. One of the lead role models of the program, Forras said he was unsurprised to be involved in such an incident at Woolamai. “This beach is incredibly dangerous, just because the sun was out and the surf wasn’t huge doesn’t make it safe for swimming,” he said. Forras assisted Lilydale surfer Ken Rudan with the rescue of the pair who were part of a large tour group visiting the notorious open ocean beach. They were dragged from the sand bar by a powerful rip and within moments were beyond their depth and panicking. “I was down at Woolamai trying to catch a couple of quiet waves after work. I hadn’t been in the water for long before I heard screaming and went to help,” Mr Rudan said. “The people in trouble were a couple, the girl was screaming ‘I’m going to die, I’m going to die’ even when I had them afloat on my board. “I was trying to keep them both calm. I let the rip take us back towards the breaking waves. “We got a couple of big waves on the head and I focused on holding the wrists of the girl. She was the most at risk. “Only three weeks ago I rescued another swimmer at this same location.” The beach was not under patrol from lifesaving services at the time.

But her physical limitations have not stopped her from participating fully in school life and was nominated by her school principal, Ken Massari, for the local scholarship award. "Taylor is a positive role model to her peers on many counts,” Mr Massari said. Ms Smith has begun studying an Associate Degree of Arts this week and plans to transfer to a Bachelor of Social Work.

Surfing Victoria’s Cahill Bell-Warren, of Jan Juc, was preparing the #isurfwith program participants to head into the water when the situation unfolded. “Ironically, these are the very incidents we are working with Play It Safe by the Water to empower these young kids to help avert,” Mr Bell-Warren said. The program worked through early intervention to prevent people from swimming in dangerous areas while giving young surfers the skills and confidence to physically perform an in-water rescue, he said. “Surfers play an essential role in the chain of water safety. This is another great example. The Woolamai incident was just weeks after surfers led a mass rescue of seven people swimmers at the same location. Two later died in hospital.

A Belmont teenager has been honoured with an international award for her volunteer work in Uganda. Former Sacred Heart student Sarah Kenworthy was awarded the Young Women in Public Affairs honour at the annual Zonta Club of Geelong’s awards ceremony, recognising her community work, leadership achievements and dedication to advancing the status of women in both Australia and worldwide. Last year the 19-year-old volunteered at a health centre in Mannya, Uganda, where she worked as a midwife and helped deliver three babies into the world. Becoming aware that young girls were often married off as young as 12 and had limited work opportunities, she launched the Light Up Mannya charity campaign. “The intention was to provide students with solar lights, enabling the pupils to study into the evening helping them to achieve higher marks and overcome poverty through future employment opportunities,” Ms Kenworthy said.

Geelong schools would be short-changed almost $30 million if the Commonwealth fails to commit to a Gonski education funding proposal, according to the State Government. The State Government released figures it said represented the loss of funding for each school. Geelongâ€™s 59 schools would lose up to $29,920,000, the State Government claimed. Hardest hit would be Northern Bay P-12 College, set to miss out on as much as $4.6 million. Belmont High and North Geelong Secondary College would each be shorted $1.5 million. In a renewed war of numbers, Education Minister James Merlino said Victorian schools were losing out to the tune of $1.1 billion. â€œBefore the last election, the Liberals promised they wouldnâ€™t cut education and they would honour Gonski in full,â€? Mr Merlino said. â€œThese figures show the damage that will be done to Victorian schools which will lose on average $500,000 each and every year from 2019. â€œRipping out this money hurts our schools at a time when getting a good education is more important than ever. â€œIt will result in fewer teachers and less support for students.â€? Education and Training Minister Simon Birmingham said the Federal Government provided funding to the states and territories which then used their own funding models to distribute to specific schools. â€œSchool funding will continue to increase from the current record levels with the Federal Governmentâ€™s commitment to Victorian schools increasing by $993.7 million or 27 per cent from 2014-â€™15 to 2018-â€™19,â€? Pools are in troubled waters By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Geelong’s council pools have recorded the most safety incidents in the state and almost 15 times the Victorian average. The six pools had 19 WorkSafe-reportable incidents in 2014/2015, according to the Know Your Council website. The state average was 1.28 and for similar-size councils it was 2.9. Injuries to patrons at Geelong pools included a broken arm and a possible spinal injury. The pools also had no health inspections over the 12 months, the website said.

The Victorian average for inspections per facility was 1.85 and 2.72 for similar-size municipalities. “All aquatic centres have a regular health inspection and reporting regime undertaken internally to ensure water quality is closely monitored and maintained at a safe and hygienic standard,” the website said. City Hall’s general manager of community life Linda Quinn said the incidents were .0008 per cent of the 2.2 million pool visits in 2014/2015. “Of the total incidents reported, 50 per cent related to lacerations, including minor cuts and abrasions, and 40 per cent to seizures.

“The remaining incidents related to a broken arm and a possible spinal injury.” Ms Quinn said regular health inspections were carried out by the facilities’ staff but this had not been recorded on the Know Your Council website. Ms Quinn said most other councils in Victoria managed only one or two facilities. “The City’s leisure and aquatic centre staff place a high importance on the safety of its patrons. “Our staff members are highly skilled and trained, with annual training in Pool Lifeguard with Life Saving Victoria, CPR, First Aid Two and

additional in-house training. “Our centres have won Lifeguard of the Year twice in recent years at the Aquatics and Recreation Victoria Awards. “The City won Life Saving Victoria’s Commercial Training Licensee of the Year twice in three years. All aquatic centres are Watch Around Water compliant. “Two of the City’s aquatic centres have won the Life Saving Victoria’s Platinum Pool Award every year for the past four years. “In 2015 the centres scored a safety compliance average rating of 99.72 per cent.”

Dozens of community members took the opportunity to view the newly renovated and extended Drysdale Community Health Centre at an open house last week. Up to 50 local residents, clients and interested community members got their first look inside the recently finished building. The centre has re-opened for client appointments after being closed for eight months while the extensive renovation works were carried out. Bellarine Community Health Board Chair Hazel Ingram said visitors took in the modern new waiting areas as well as new clinical spaces and the extended ground floor activity room. “Some energetic members of our wonderful Mobility Plus exercise group put on a demonstration in the activity room to showcase their program to the public,” said Ms Ingram. “We also used the open house as an opportunity to seek community input for the design of the outdoor space at the Drysdale site which we want to be multifunctional.” Bellarine Community Health is working with

the Kevin Heinze Grow organisation which focuses on designs that promote the benefits of horticulture-based therapy. Concept plans include a mobility assessment area and a sensory garden for adults and children. The outdoor space will remain known as the Joan Falahey Memorial Garden in commemoration of the first Bush Nurse at the Drysdale Community Health Centre. The Drysdale Community Health Centre is home to many services - including specialty children’s services such as physiotherapy, speech pathology, occupational therapy and dietetics. An extensive program of services is also available for older clients including physical and planned activity groups, physiotherapy, podiatry and counselling. The $1.7 million dollar renovation was completed within eight months by local construction company Lyons. The building will be officially opened later this month.

Fifty-four per cent of respondents ranked regional newspapers, like the Geelong Indy, as their most-trusted source of information, said the Think Local Regional News Media Report. Television was next at 29 per cent, with radio on 27 and online searches 18. Regional newspapers were also “the mostengaging source of information”, with a rate 1.6 times ahead of radio and 2.9 times above catalogues and flyers. Respondents considered regional newspapers their “number-one source of information on local business, the most-influential media for shopping

and buying decisions and an essential connection to the readers’ local community”, the report said. The Newspaper Works chief Mark Hollands said the results confirmed that regional newspapers relationship with their communities made them “a highly effective advertising environment”. “Readers also overwhelmingly turn to their local newspaper to stay informed about issues affecting their area, events in their region and to get practical, relevant information.” The report said 77 per cent of respondents ranked regional newspapers first for information on how to find local businesses and services. Radio was next “with just 30 per cent”, the report said

Geelong’s big dry has prompted Barwon Water to open the Melbourne to Geelong pipeline next month to boost supplies. Water Minister Lisa Neville said extreme dry conditions across Barwon Water’s service region had seen storages drop to levels not experienced “since the end of the millennium drought”. Storages currently sit at 38.4 per cent. This time last year they were at 64 per cent. “Geelong has a 59km pipeline - built by the previous Labor Government - linking the city to Melbourne’s water supply providing Geelong with greater water security,” Ms Neville said. “By turning on the pipeline, this means water restrictions are now a last resort and Geelong can still maintain its liveability even as drying conditions continue. “Barwon Water has notified Melbourne Water of its intention to access up to six gigalitres of water from the Thompson/Yarra catchment over the coming year. “There will be no additional cost to Barwon Water customers as a result of switching on the pipeline or the desalination plant. “The current pricing structure is in place until

A bus stop on busy Portarlington Road involved in a serious accident on Tuesday morning has been taken out of service. A school boy was running to catch a bus at the stop when he was struck by a car, and was airlifted to The Alfred hospital in a critical condition. Public Transport Victoria said it had been working with Victoria Police and VicRoads to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. “In consultation with VicRoads, the bus stop at Melaluka has been temporarily taken out of service and customers for all services are being redirected to nearby bus stops (near Kensington Road and Christie Road) while this incident is examined further.“ The father of the boy lashed out at authorities over the location of the bus stop posting his comments from his son’s bedside in the ICU.

Safe harbour a step closer A $19 million ‘safe harbour’ on Geelong’s waterfront is a step closer after a City Hall funding commitment this week. Councillors voted unanimously to tip $3 million into the stage-one upgrade of Royal Geelong Yacht Club facilities, including a curved 280-metre long ‘wave attenuator’ to protect berthed vessels. The upgrade would also rebuild the club’s premises and deliver other facilities while improving public access to the site. The yacht club estimates the project will create over 100 full-time and casual jobs, along with a similar amount during construction. The club has equalled City Hall’s funding commitment, while State Government has backed the project but has yet to formally commit an anticipated $6 million.

The remaining $7 million would come from Federal Government, which has yet to publicly support the project. The club will apply for the money from the Government’s National Stronger Regions Fund. The club welcomed council’s commitment this week and vowed to continue pursuing state and federal governments for the remainder of the funding. The yacht club plans to fund a $12 million second stage of the project, with revenue from increased berthing opportunities. Mayor Darryn Lyons said council was “pleased” to offer a contribution, noting the value of existing events in the yacht club precinct. “The Royal Geelong Yacht Club is an iconic part of Geelong’s Waterfront that provides significant social, economic and tourism benefits to the

region. We would like to see events continue to grow at the club,” Cr Lyons said. “Annually, the Festival of Sails contributes $14.6 million into our local economy, and this long weekend the Wooden Boat Festival is also expected to draw large crowds. “Upgrades made through the Geelong Waterfront Safe Harbour Precinct will enable better access from the street to the waterfront for the public and non-members of the yacht club.” The funding commitment has set back the mayor’s preferred Yarra Street Pier project, which was also vying for millions of dollars in funding despite opposition from local Labor MPs. The region’s municipal alliance body, G21, has backed the pier as a “priority project”.

An Australian-first pilot program is determing whether smart-home technology can help Geelong’s elderly stay in their own homes longer. Deakin University is running The Holly Project over six weeks with the backing of technology giant Samsung and City Hall. The artificial intelligence (AI) in-home agedcare platform aims to use technology to give elderly residents the support and security they need to avoid going into an aged care facility. Five households with participants aged from 73 to 81 will have their movements tracked and monitored through battery-powered sensors designed to detect motion, vibration, temperature and humidity. Each room will have a speaker so researchers behind the Holly platform can broadcast audio messages to communicate with participants. Dean of Deakin University’s Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment, Professor Trevor Day, said the project would provide “potentially life-changing” opportunities the elderly. “This project has the capacity to help address major challenges facing Australia’s health system, while allowing elderly residents to stay independent in their own homes for longer,” Prof Day said. Deakin researchers would work with Samsung’s SmartThings home sensors and the Australian-developed Holly system to create technologies that understand the normal movements and activity inside a home, he said. “With this information, Holly will be able to start to identify abnormal activity and raise alerts to healthcare providers as required.” Samsung director of engineering and solutions Ian Aitken, said Holly could alert emergency services if there was a problem. “We hope this pilot study will build our understanding for how connected technologies can help meet major challenges facing the lives of Australians.

Letters Take care this weekend During the Labour Day long weekend many will be looking forward to getting out and enjoying the promised warm weather. As the mercury rises, so too does the number of motorcyclists on the roads, so it’s timely to remind all road users to be mindful of each other and be safe. Already in 2016, 20 motorcyclists have lost their lives on Victorian roads, representing the worst start to the year for rider fatalities in 30 years. But this is not about figures. Behind each of the lives lost is a shattered community and a network of family members and loved ones plunged into grief. Every road user deserves to return safely from every trip so this is not about singling out drivers or riders. It is about everyone in the community taking on road safety as a personal responsibility and making a commitment to being as safe as they can be. All of these fatalities could have been avoided and there are steps we can all take to ensure each other’s safety. Driving or riding at safe and legal speeds, avoiding driving while impaired by fatigue, alcohol or other drugs - these are things that can prevent a tragedy. So before you climb into the saddle or the driver’s seat, plan your trip and make sure you put getting home safely ahead of all other considerations. It’s the least we can do for our loved ones. Sink tree in favour of Geelong’s real issues The latest drama with the Christmas tree reveals how disgustingly out of whack some people’s priorities are. A suggestion to have a public fund at a bank that we all chip into had me seeing similar shades of red to what the tree puts into our city. All this fuss over a silver cylinder? Don’t people know or care about the real issues affecting Geelong? A public fund is a good idea but here is what the money should go to in Geelong: feeding, housing and clothing the homeless; a much-needed ice detox centre; more unemployment services; more mental health facilities; and a scholarship fund for those who would benefit from a university education but who can’t afford it, even with student loans. These suggestions might not be as flashy and attention-grabbing as the tree but they reflect more accurately what Geelong needs. Stop trying to save something that is sinking our city into further debt. Even if we have the tree, the true issues facing our city will remain and those not blinded by the flashy cylinder will look on in disbelief and disgust as our city becomes bankrupt, businesses fail and community unemployment and underemployment. Men have given away over one million jobs to women and yet feminists still want affirmative action to get more women into the workforce. Are women staying at home and having too many babies? On the contrary, 40 per cent of mothers with young children under five are in the workforce. Due to the high participation of women in the workforce our birth rate has fallen to 1.8, well below replacement levels. It doesn’t make sense therefore to push for more women in the overcrowded workforce when youth unemployment is over 40 per cent in many places.

I thank William Dart (Letters, 19 February) for his put-up-or-shut-up challenge. I graduated with a degree in electronics engineering in 1978. Also included were some mechanical engineering subjects such as thermodynamics and heat engines. In secondary school in the early ’70s we learned about the greenhouse effect and how it gave Earth a warm, habitable environment. It was known that increasing CO2 in the atmosphere would lead to enhancing this effect and that one day we would have to replace our fossil fuels to avoid disastrous warming. This was just ordinary science like all others and nobody argued about it. As decades went on there was increasing urgency for action and some promising starts but nothing would be done. I was aghast at the disinformation in the public arena which too easily muddied the waters enough to keep business-as-usual going. Now I write because I feel I have to do something, too. With a life dedicated to painting animals, and birds in particular, Jarrett has undertaken field trips to Antarctica, throughout Australasia, North and South America and twice to the geographic North Pole. Throughout the year Jarrett produces no more than 20 paintings, from small life-size portraits to large complex pieces that can take months to complete. Jarrett said he wanted to produce artwork to the highest standard to maintain both the quality and value of his paintings. “A larger volume of work often means, fast, repetitive easily produced works that don’t progress one’s ideas, design or skill,” he said. His wildlife painting career was inspired by the rugged cliffs and expansive beaches of the coastline surrounding his home town of Portland. “Its rich diversity of both terrestrial and marine wildlife was the perfect environment growing up with a fascination of whales and oceanic seabirds,” Jarrett said. “Realist painting takes on many interpretations and forms and there is no distinction between a human portrait and an animal or bird portrait. “Both in their purest form are telling a story and an intimate view of the subject’s beauty, personality, character and expressions.” During his travels Jarrett has worked as a field biologist collecting behavioural and abundance data on whales, dolphins and seabirds. He has spent a total of three years living on the Antarctic continent, including four months tagging Weddell Seals.

In 2001 Jarrett co-authored and illustrated a collection of all the marine mammals of the world, depicting for the first time species and characteristics never before published. His latest exhibition, In a Natural Light, will be in the Otway Room at Lorne’s Cumberland Lorne Resort from 26 to 27 March. Jarrett said the paintings were a diverse col-

lection, from local shorebirds such as the endangered hooded plover to the majestic wandering albatross, penguins, crested terns, fairy-wrens and the Arctic’s top predator, the polar bear. During the exhibition Jarrett will be available to discuss his works and his fascination with wildlife.

Thirsty for more Mercs By ALANA MITCHELSON After releasing its first original record in five years, Australian pop/rock band Thirsy Merc is on the way to Geelong with its latest thunes. Lead singer Rai Thistlethwayte said he had been living between Melbourne and Los Angeles in recent times, exploring new projects, but still retained his passion for music since the band’s last album. “In five years a lot can happen. Music is my absolute backbone, it’s my heartbeat, it’s the soundtrack of my good times and bad times in my life,“ he told the Indy. “It’s my best friend. It’s the awakening element to realisations and to truth. It’s a way of communicating with the world. “Music has this incredible power. “It’s about the people you meet and the lessons you learn; music’s not just about notes and rhythms.“ Thistlethwayte’s experiences living at the centre of a global music hub in LA had opened his eyes and impacted the music on the new record Shifting Gears, he said. Thirsty Merc made a nostalgic decision to return to the same studio and same producer responsible for their first album, dating back to 2004. Thistlethwayte said the new single The Grind offered commentary on the “cat-and-mouse game with women.“ One of his favourite songs off the new album, Understanding Love, was “almost autobiographical,“ he said. “It’s a very personal song. It talks about all of the different aspects of love and how love is bigger than all of us - my love for my work, my band, romantic love and how travel affects relationships,

and most importantly in my opinion the love for my family.“ The band used crowdfunding to fund the record, which gave them the opportunity to share special incentives such as handwritten lyrics sheets or an acoustic performance in a fan’s backyard. The goal was achieved within 48 hours. Thirsty Merc had an emotional end to 2015 after a fatal road accident killed its stage manager

and critically injured the band’s touring drummer, who was left comatose in intensive care. The band’s van had been en route to a gig in Warrnambool in September. “It’s been the hardest thing I’ve had to deal with in my career,“ Thistlethwayte said. “Hearing Mick’s (the drummer) outlook has been inspirational.“ Thirsty Merc had channelled all its energy into

the Back to the Grind tour, Thistlethwayte said. “We’re going to give these shows everything we’ve got. “It’s taken all of 2015 to get here with all the tools and assets that the record has. “We want fans to know that their support doesn’t go unnoticed. Transitioning from primary school to secondary school is a significant event in every child’s education journey. At Sacred Heart College, we cherish and protect our students’ curiosity and natural inquisitiveness through an induction program focused on self-directed exploration, creativity and problem solving. Our aim is to empower students so that they can settle into secondary school life with confidence. The orientation program avoids placing extra pressure on the students, instead gradually introducing them to the various aspects of their new school. SPORT Cats cross their paws By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Geelong will hope for an injury-free game as it completes its NAB Challenge series against Fremantle at Domain Stadium tomorrow. While performances have been encouraging the Cats have been rocked by knee injuries to emerging young defender Jackson Thurlow and promising mature age recruit Sam Menegola. Thurlow faces a lost season with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament while Menegola faces up to 10 weeks on the sidelines with posterior cruciate ligament damage. Geelong has been taking close to full strength teams into the pre-season in a team bonding bid as it faces reigning premier Hawthorn in an Easter Monday blockbuster. Geelong’s coaches were heartened by a better defensive showing against Essendon. But the quality of the opposition left a question

mark over Geelong’s defensive mindset. Fremantle will provide a sterner test. Key defenders Tom Lonergan and Lachie Henderson were subbed out early after suffering leg knocks but the Cats coaching group would be keen to see them with another game under their belts in the retooled defence. Veteran defender Andrew Mackie was rested from the game against Essendon but is expected to be recalled for the clash with Fremantle. Likewise Daniel Menzel was spared the trip to the heat of Shepparton but will benefit from more game time. With Thurlow out, Jed Bews is a chance to return provided he has overcome shoulder soreness suffered against Collingwood in NAB one. But current VFL best and fairest Tom Ruggles did not look out of place in Geelong’s backline last week and should have done enough to retain his spot.

Fremantle has confirmed Gold Coast Suns recruit Harley Bennell will play in his first NAB Challenge hit-out. City took the initiative via Yusuf Ahmed and Christopher Cristaldo getting in behind the Warriors defence resulting in some early nervous moments. North Geelong responded with Rudi Saglam providing opportunities to Michael Anderson and then Nicholas Jur?i?, both of whom were just inches away from putting the away ahead. City continued to surge through the Warriors midfield and defence with fine keeping from Daniel Zilic being the difference between the two sides initially. Melbourne eventually took the lead via Austin Wong tapping in from close range after a Stefan Zinni through ball. Zinni then made it two, placing the ball into an empty net following a rebound from a Christaldo shot. The half time break brought no respite for the Warriors with City continuing the quick counter attack and ball movement to unsettle the Warriors’ tempo, Cristaldo making it 3-0, finishing of a nice flowing move. The Warriors responded eventually and won a penalty on 63 mins which skipper Matt Townley put away, however that was quickly negated

Good haul of kingfish ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Queenscliff produced some impressive captures over the past week, with whiting, squid and kingfish taken. Whiting to 45cm were caught on pippies and squid around the grass beds just to the east of the harbour on the run-in tide. The nearby entrance to Swan Bay held squid of around 800g, with size 3 jigs accounting for most captures. Gone Fishing Charters had an outstanding session on kingfish in the Rip, with clients boating numerous kingies to 8kg. Entice jigs worked extremely well. Corio Bay’s pinkie snapper and flathead were on the chew again. I encountered numerous pinkies while fishing the Stingray Bay spoil grounds with soft plastics on Sunday, when the fishing improved as the weather worsened. Clifton Springs produced the odd snapper to 4kg for patient anglers using freshly sourced bait such as squid. Using a depth sounder to locate schools was crucial to success. Salmon continued feeding on the surface offshore from Ocean Grove and Barwon, with lures taking fish reaching 2.5kg. Fishing down the Western District went from strength to strength, with kingfish and tuna commonly caught. Mitch Chapman fished out from Portland, catching both species on stick baits cast to surface-feeding fish. Freshwater reports were impressive, with Lake Bullen Merri returning Chinook salmon to 4kg and respectable rainbow trout around 1.5kg. Trolling deep with a down rigger was an advantage, while bait anglers had luck anchored up and drifting pilchard fillets to the bottom in a berley trail. Justin Burns fished around Horsham recently where he banked numerous yellowbelly on Jackal TN60 lures among some heavy structure. Wurdee Boluc Reservoir was productive for Michael Evans, who caught both redfin and rainbow trout. Casting lures from the lake margins, he banked redfin to 47cm and some chunky trout. Michael said larger plastic like a Norries spoon-tail 4.5-inch shad really enticed the larger redfin. The Barwon River around Queen’s Park produced carp to 4kg for anglers prepared to be patient and fish with corn kernels. The odd redfin of 30cm was also taken on small hard-body lures cast around the bridge. Next week should spoil anglers for local options, with Corio Bay a sure bet on soft plastics for pinkies and flathead over the spoil grounds. Freshwater anglers should try Wurdee Boluc for large redfin on big soft plastic.

Cats end season on high with big win LOCAL CRICKET Jim Timberlake Geelong Cricket Club finished their season on high last Saturday, winning its match against Kingston Hawthorn by a resounding 163 runs. Having posted 8/337 the previous week, the bowlers got the job done in fine style, dismissing their hosts for just 174, Hayden Butterworth was the star with 5/45, while Corey Ogle finished with 2/31. Having to bowl again to play out time, Tom Treble picked up 2/32 before stumps were pulled with Kingston Hawthorn on 3/133. In the wash up, the Cats finished in 11th place on the ladder, which was probably a fair result. While they lost some games they should have won prior to Christmas, they stuck at it and showed much more promise in the second half of the season. 38 GEELONG INDY Friday, 11 March, 2016

The club still has their Thirds and Fourths in the finals, and will hope to get some finals experience into their stars of the future. In the Geelong Cricket Association, it’s Preliminary Final weekend, and in division one, the two scheduled games will be tight affairs. Minor premier East Belmont clinically ended St Joseph’s hopes of a three peat last week, chasing down the Joeys 189 without too much fuss. This week, they will take on South Barwon at Queens Park, the Swans going through as the highest ranked loser after putting in a shocker against Grovedale. After having the Tigers at 3/5 early on day one, they couldn’t capitalise as Gareth Yelland made a superb though not chanceless 75 not out to lead his side to 9/226.

In reply, South Barwon were never in the hunt, capitulating to be all out for a measly 88, Chris Young taking 5/29. The Swans will need to regroup quickly, but it will take a remarkable turnaround to beat an East Belmont side determined to get the job done this season. That means Grovedales opponent this weekend will be Lara, who got over the line against Geelong City, in a tense game dominated by bowlers. With the wicket looking like it would do plenty, the Sharks were asked to bat first, and battled to put together any meaningful partnerships to be all out for 116. In reply, Lara didn’t have it all their own way, and at 7/89 looked in all sorts of trouble. But Andy Hughes stood firm with a gutsy 44 not out to guide his side home.
