MORE than 75,000 people celebrated the Apple and Grape Harvest Festival, which culminated in the grand parade, multicultural carnival and wine fiesta at the weekend.

After 10 long days, the Apple and Grape Harvest Festival 2016 at Stanthorpe came to a close, finishing with a spectacular weekend of entertainment, fun, food and wine.

Apple and Grape festival president Greg Thouard said the event was a real celebration.

“The amazing thing is that tens of thousands of people have taken the opportunity to come along and visit for the 50th-anniversary celebrations,” he said.

“It’s been fantastic; with an excellent event program and great weather pulling one of the best crowds we have ever had.”

Organisers predict that $12.5million was injected into the region during the 10-day festival.

“The festival has once again proven to be a huge success both by participation and community involvement, but also by financial gain for the local economy," Mr Thouard said.

“The crowd for the grand parade was just huge. The smiles on people's faces makes all the hard work worth it.”

He said he would like to thank the committee members and all the volunteer groups for their enormous commitment.

“I’d also like to thank all the committees of the young ambassadors,”

Love of the country always in her mind, Warwick was the next and final place purchasing acreage in Goomburra and establishing a horse breeding stud.

Maggie’s other loves are her hobbies where she has been President and Treasurer (Country Music & Lapidary) and is a member of the Allora Show Society. She also became a presenter on local Rainbow FM. Maggie brings tourists to the region by staging a large country music festival now in it’s seventh year.

“I decided to stand for council because I was always questioning the councillors, re certain items that interested me, and Denise Ingram said I should stand at the next election and then the same happened with the late Jamie Mackenzie and he used to answer all my questions for me and was a wonderful person to talk to, so giving of himself as a councillor,” she said.

Credit union helps out

By TANIA PHILLIPS WARWICK Credit Union has been named as the major corporate sponsor for the 2016 Jumpers and Jazz in July Festival.

Credit Union CEO Lewis von Stieglitz said he was thrilled with the exposure that the Credit Union received as a festival partner and that the organisation’s continued involvement is an illustration of their stalwart community connection.

“One of the many bonuses of being involved with the festival includes attending events, such as the annual Winter Dinner,” Mr Von Stieglitz said.

“Now in its second year, the dinner is held in the beautiful Warwick Town Hall, where Southern Downs regional produce and Granite Belt wines are showcased, and acclaimed jazz musicians take to the stage.

“This year, the festival has been successful in attracting The Con Artists, The Conservatorium of Music, Griffith University, Brisbane’s flagship,

18-piece swing band to perform at the event.

As president of the Warwick Chamber of Commerce, Mr Von Stieglitz further reiterated the significance of the festival in promoting the sought-after Southern Downs lifestyle.

“Tourism operators report healthy forward bookings during festivals such as these, and local businesses benefit from an influx of visitors requiring all sorts of services,” he said.

The 10-day Jumpers and Jazz in July event will feature over 100 community events associated with the festival this year.

Mr Von Stieglitz encouraged the community to rally around the festival and its organisers with the usual enthusiasm shown for the event over the past 12 years.

Street unrest follows Inglewood teen dispute POLICE have issued infringement notices to two women and five men following an incident in Inglewood on Saturday morning.

Sergeant Tim Hoffman of Inglewood police said police were called to a large street disturbance in the early hours of Saturday morning after a number of fights broke out in the small township.

He said the disturbance was allegedly triggered when two women, who were former friends, had fallen out and exchanged a number of threats via social media and texts.

During the disturbance, a number of persons were assaulted and a man was conveyed to the Inglewood Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

According to Sergeant Hoffman, police were kept busy quelling the unrest for about three hours.

Police have issued infringement notices to two women and five men and cautioned one female juvenile, all for public nuisance (disorderly) offences with further investigations being conducted which may lead to further charg-

es being laid against others involved.

Police will allege alcohol was a major factor in the disturbance with all persons affected by liquor.

He said a major disappointment was the fact that older adults became involved in the incident inflaming the situation, instead of giving guidance and good advice to those involved in what was initially a teenage dispute.

The disturbance affected the peace and good order of the normally quiet and serene township.

Sgt Hoffman said this type of behaviour could not be condoned.

“Whilst we are fortunate no persons were seriously injured on this occasion, alcohol-related violence of this nature will simply not be tolerated and anyone involved will be held accountable for their actions,” he said.

In brief Tight security at festival THE Apple and Grape Festival went off with relatively few incidents of consequence reported over the weekend, considering the large number of locals and visitors in town to celebrate the event, Stanthorpe police said.

Thirty-seven police personnel from both local and external stations and sections, including the Public Safety Response Team and the Mounted Unit from Brisbane bolstered police numbers in an endeavour to ensure the streets and roads remained safe.

Senior Sergeant Mark Ireland of Stanthorpe police said Road Policing Units completed 27 random drug tests, resulting in four persons returning positive drug readings and being charged accordingly.

He said more than 600 random breath tests were also carried out, resulting in a further four persons being charged with drink driving.

“It was pleasing to see that despite the large number of visitors to the area and the associated heavy traffic flow, no traffic crashes were recorded over the three-day period,” he said.

“The licensed premises and areas experienced heavy patronage with police maintaining high visibility in the vicinity.

“Regardless, over the three days, 11 infringements were issued for public nuisance and liquor-related offences, which, considering the large influx of persons, was considered minimal.

“No assaults associated with licensed premises were reported over the course of the three-day event.”

HoNest leadersHip. PRIORITY 4: COLLABORATION AND PARTNERSHIP Over the last 2 weeks I have stressed the importance of continuing debt reduction and seeking sound investment. These remain the only ways to move the region forward and reduce the impact of rising costs.

However, nothing will be achievable unless we all work together.

It is essential that those elected to Council understand the critical importance of being part of a team making tough decisions. We will not always agree, but we need to be professional enough to deal with diference and respect the democratic process. This team comprises Councillors who are all elected to represent the community and staf whose role is to research and present the best possible solutions.

I have been hearing a lot about some Councillors and Mayoral candidates misleading the community. Some of the current Councillors have held the region hostage for political gain, refusing to support initiatives that would reduce debt, minimise financial stress and deliver better economic development outcomes. This has been despite equal opportunity to have input and ofer alternative solutions. It is not good enough to sit silently with arms folded only to rush to the media with objections at the end of meetings.

Those who know me understand that I always see the best in people and strive to be inclusive of all opinions to find a way forward. The divisiveness must stop and in my next term as Mayor I will work to ensure that this community is represented with the honesty it deserves.

I have also heard some alarming reports about the actions and dealings of other Mayoral candidates.

These reports indicate promises are being made to sections of the community and campaign donors regarding tourism and infrastructure.

These unrealistic promises are being made before understanding the history, knowing the legislation, listening to expert and industry advice, or respecting the input of other councillors. We saw the damage this recently caused at state level and I can only pray it does not happen locally.

Council is governed by rules and regulations and is why experience in Local Government is essential for those seeking to be elected as Mayor. Being Mayor requires a solid understanding of the legislation and policy that directs the way councils can operate and an in depth appreciation of the historical needs of the community - all while recognising the needs of the future.

Jean blew 90 candles Casey’s tips

By JOYCE MARSH, WOODENBONG CORRESPONDENT. FORMER Woodenbong resident Jean Maloney (nee McMillan), now of Tenterfield, celebrated her 90th birthday with two parties last week.

The first was with 50 guests held at her daughter’s property at Tenterfield and the other a luncheon in Woodenbong where her local family members and friends joined with her including sisters Marg Pethers, Joan Pethers and Dos Percival but sadly on the day their other sister Ivy Reid was unable to be present.

Talk about breeding them tough in these parts as two of the siblings are now nonagenarians.

Jean was married to the late Alan Maloney and lived at Woodenbong for many years; they had six children and now have 15 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Jean is now affectionately named ‘Gratie’.

She is still living an active lifestyle, a great cook which attracts many visitors, mad keen gardener having a large vegetable patch and decorative floral garden with a love of roses.

“I played golf for years, but I am just too busy for that now,” she said.

Jean remains mobile with the use of mobility scooter, so no holding her back.

She was fortunate to reach her 90th birthday as recently she was picking strawberries in her garden when she was struck at by a brown

snake narrowly missing her face.

The snake catcher that came to her aid said: “Had the snake bitten her she would not have survived to get to hospital.”

The secret is out as to the fact that Jean loves frogs and fittingly both celebrations featured decorated frog inspired cakes lovingly made by family members.

No extensions IMAGINE expecting Queenslanders to grant politicians an extension to their years in power when three seems like an eternity! Flashing across television screens on 1 March, that Australia’s

debt has reached $1 trillion for the first time, had this writer marking the referendum vote form as judgement, with a firm NO! Council elections with a candidate paper almost as long as one’s arm, indicates that strangers to most of us will become untouchable for the next four years, regardless of their abilities!

The mayoral vote is to this writer plain sailing, with the former deputy mayor well-known without spending a fortune, while offering experience in the job, and hopefully leadership. To elect a whole new inexperienced team would be a challenge that could return council to its hopeless past. And another thing that was apparently hopeless was the ability to purchase typewriter ribbons. For months the hunt was on until I went to North Queensland where common sense is still common. There was found a stock room with the ribbon that matched my empty boxes. Then a friend found another in Brisbane, so letters to editors will continue!!

Decision time YOU read in shock and horror the account of our Mayor Peter Blundell in the People ‘n’ Places magazine of the action or inaction of our elected councillors during his term of office to date.

Having attended quite a few meetings in the past when some of these councillors were pres-

ent, I can attest to the accuracy of the statements made by Peter Blundell.

By a simple body count it was obvious who was missing at any one or more meetings and at a glance one could see the contribution or lack of being made by others whom the mayor mentioned. One particular councillor’s contribution over several meetings was to lift a hand to cast a vote. But not a word was uttered. How’s that for a team effort? In my opinion, any councillor behaving in this way at a meeting or purposely absenting themselves (a common occurrence) when there is a big decision to be made, should be dismissed.

Now we are at a stage in time where these same councillors are asking the general public to vote them back into office. If we believe their resumes, they have suddenly become, and are, a wonderful team absolutely dedicated to doing their very best for you and me. How? By disregarding meetings at which something important to you and I may have been discussed, or if attending, sitting on the fence?

It has been mentioned that it might be a mistake to put all of these councillors out and elect new ones. Why would this be such a problem?

Isn’t this what happens here in Australia every time we have a change of government in Canberra? It works in Canberra and the sky doesn’t fall in on us.

Fire fighters SOUTHERN Downs residents will stand to benefit from the construction and maintenance of more fire trails in the region, with funding confirmed by the Queensland’s Deputy Premier, Jackie Trad late last week.

Southern Downs Regional Council meeting last week received approval from the deputy premier for a contribution of $31,680 to council under the Queensland Government’s 2015-’16 Community Resilience Fund for fire trail construction and maintenance.

Southern Downs Regional Council Mayor Peter Blundell said the funding was welcomed and, along with council’s in-kind contribution of more than $20,000, would help to protect residents from the devastating effects of bushfire, through disaster preparedness and risk mitigation.

“Council is very pleased that our application to the Community Resilience Fund was successful and will enable council to proceed with the additional fire trail construction and maintenance in partnership with Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ),” the mayor said.

Council’s Disaster Management co-ordinator Mark Saunders said the bulk of the funding is earmarked for use in the southern end of the Southern Downs region.

“Three new fire trails, of approximately 13 kilometres, have been identified for construction in and around Ballandean and Eukey, and some maintenance of existing trails will also take place in these areas,” he said.

“Some of the funding will be used to undertake maintenance of the existing 42 kilometres of fire trails in the ranges east of Warwick, which were built during the fires of 2009.

Southern Downs Regional Council worked in partnership with the Stanthorpe and Warwick Groups of RFSQ to identify and prioritise construction and maintenance of new and existing fire trails across the region.

“Significant work was undertaken by RFSQ staff and volunteers and council officers in mid2015 to develop the application to the Community Resilience Funds, and it’s a credit to all involved that the application has been successful,” Mr Saunders added.

Smoke billows as rumour mill fires Smoke is billowing from tyres of the rumour mongers now pedalling madly to gain traction in a malicious and misguided campaign to discredit me, my friends and supporters.

Three new fire trails have been identified for in and around Ballandean and Eukey, and some maintenance of existing trails will also take place in these areas. 142313 Group and Acting Bush Fire Safety officer with RFSQ said fire trails allowed Rural Fire Brigades to access areas that were generally inaccessible so they could attack and cut off fires.

“If we can get resources closer to the fire, then we can attack it earlier. Less land will be burnt out and the safety of our volunteer fire fighters is markedly improved, allowing them to get home and get back to work sooner,” Mr Welsh said.

“Fire trails can also be used as control lines for hazard reduction burns during operation Cool Burn” said Mr Welsh.

The first project meeting of key stakeholders was held last week, to determine the schedule of works.

It is envisaged that the fire trail works will be completed ahead of the next bushfire season.

Council would also remind land owners that they need to take action to reduce the fuel load on their properties as a further mitigation strategy.

Who would want to undermine your confidence in me? Who would benefit from spreading malicious lies about me, my friends and supporters?”

Identified areas for reform are: Poor work scheduling.

Equipment misapplication Inefficient work practices.

We will have our students getting down and dirty - shunting in the yard, driving and firing the engine, helping with maintenance and repairing the tracks so that tourist trains can once again run through to Allora.

Local residents should get ready to complain about smoke, steam, dust and the noise of train whistles!

Our visitors’ partners (and mothers) are fully booked on coach and rail excursions throughout our region; they will be sightseeing and taking in galleries, vineyard tours and folk museums‌‌‌.they will be keen to spend indecent amounts of cash and will be staying at our best hotels and motels.

Our local Chambers of Commerce have responded magnificently by persuading some eateries to stay open after 6pm. The influx of tourists has put 7-day trading back on the agenda and some believe that this initiative may lead to daylight saving finally being implemented in Queensland.�

By TERRY WEST THE coming month is looking like it may continue to give the Southern Downs some more drier weather with heat still hanging around.

Over eastern Australia, the cold front events with potential to bring rain are expected about 20 March to 24 March, 27 March to 31 March, 3 April to 7 April. Rain events originating in the tropics and moving south are possible about 23 March to 27 March. In summary, it is going to be a warmer-thanaverage and drier-than-average month.

Starting this Friday, there is a Severe Weather Exhibition on at the Warwick Art Gallery. Severe weather chasers, Chris McFerran, Caralee Mirfin and Stephen Reid will have their photos on display while I will have a projector display of mine.

What’s On Experts behind the images

By TANIA PHILLIPS WARWICK Art Gallery has worked with four exceptionally talented local photographers to present its latest exhibition, Weather Exposure.

The exhibition was inspired by the popularity of weather chasing groups on Facebook such as Trance-Media Southern, SE QLD Weather Photography and Higgins Storm Chasing and the enormous wealth of photographic talent on the Southern Downs.

Four popular local photographers will participate in the exhibition; Stephen Reid, Chris McFerran, Caralee Mirfin and Terry West.

The Southern Downs landscape is renowned for its beauty, wide open spaces and distinctive seasons.

Most of images in the exhibition are of the local area and feature magnificent captures of storm clouds, rainbows, frost and sunshine.

Stephen Reid is a local photographer from Yangan who has a passion for capturing, through photography, the subtle nuances of light and weather on the landscape.

Stephen most often uses a panoramic format as he feels that this embodies the breadth of the expansive Australian landscape.

“My quest is to search for the perfect images that capture and communicate the essence of our unique Australian landscape,” Stephen said.

“While I didn’t understand much about what was actually going on in the atmosphere, I knew the clouds were different,” he said.

“They were immense, towering, cumulonimbus thunderstorms and when I developed the first roll of storm cloud photos, I was instantly hooked!”

Terry West is well known locally for his photo-journalistic work and the gallery is thrilled to have him participate in the exhibition with a digital presentation of 11 of his best images.

Terry’s interest in weather began at a young age when his father taught him to read the sky for signs. It was experiencing a Supercell storm in Warwick in 1996 that inspired him to “chase storms”. “This encouraged me to learn more about weather and climate,” Terry said.

“Once I started, I was hooked and loved it but did not know there was a whole community of Chasers out there.”

The exhibition will be incredibly popular, featuring both framed and canvas printed enlargements of the works and a digital presentation by Terry West and Caralee Mirfin.

To complement the artwork, the Gallery has temporarily borrowed three of the late Father McKey’s weather instruments from Father Joe McKey Museum and Archives, housed in the original church at St Mary’s, Warwick. Weather Exposure will be on display from Thursday 10 March until Sunday 10 April, 2016.

You can meet all four photographers at the official opening on Friday 11 March at 6.30pm. This is a free event and anyone is welcome but rsvp to the gallery on 07 4661 0434.

Life and times in Brooklyn THERE is little for Eilis (Saoirse Ronan) in early '50s small town Ireland - no job or even marriage and prospects, so with the help of her older sister and an Irish-born American priest (Jim Broadbent) she sets out for a new life in America, landing in the Irish enclave in Brooklyn.

Despite her initial homesickness and timidness she eventually finds a place for herself, starts enjoying her job at a posh department store and studies at night to be a bookkeeper and eventually an accountant. She

also falls in love with Tony (Emory Cohen) an ItalianAmerican who opens her eyes to her new surroundings.

But a family tragedy sends Eilis back home to Ireland, no longer the timid young girl that left, she catches the eye of the charming publican Jim (Domhnall Gleeson) and is forced to choose between a life she is familiar with and the life she has been building.

There is something charming and disarming about this beautiful piece of cinema.

Beautifully shot, it captures the mood and the feel of both '50s Ireland and '50s Brooklyn like an early Maeve Binchy novel warm and comfortable (though without the melodrama of a Binchy).

This is a movie with a beautiful stillness - it takes time to build it’s characters and for that reason it exudes charm.

At it’s heart is a beautiful, real and understated performance

by Saoirse Ronan with both Emory Cohen, as the handsome but slightly uneducated Italian plumber, and Domhnall Gleeson, as Jim the Irish boy captivated by the new Eilis, adding to the charm. As you would expect Julie Walters as the Irish land-lady in Brooklyn and Jim Broadbent as the priest prove scene stealers.

Brooklyn takes you gently back to a simpler time and tells the story not only of a young woman coming of age but of the headache and adventures of emigration.

By TANIA PHILLIPS ST MARY’S Catholic Church is set to celebrate its 90th Anniversary on 20 March and launch a restoration fund.

Back in the 1910s, parish priest of the time, Fr Michael Potter, saw a need for a bigger church and began fund-raising.

The local architects, Connolly and Dornbusch, were engaged to design a neo-gothic style building, the foundation stone for which was

laid in 1920 by Archbishop Daniel Mannix, Melbourne, assisted by Archbishop James Duhig, Brisbane.

Work began soon after, but because of two court cases, the original design needed to be modified.

The church was opened on 21 March 1926 by Archbishop Duhig and has been the centre of worship and prayer for the Catholic community of Warwick ever since.

The church has become an historic landmark of the city in which

many families have fond memories of celebrating the Sacraments and significant family milestones.

Since many of the parishioners, who have memories of the construction of the Church and of Monsignor Michael Potter, are ageing, the parish decided to celebrate the 90th Anniversary and not wait for the centenary.

And the church needs extensive repair work to its stonework and windows, the parish would also like

to launch a Restoration Fund on this occasion.

The parish is inviting all people associated with the parish either through the schools or the celebration of a special event or by being past members of the parish to join them for this celebration.

Thought - as a tool of creation

By TANIA PHILLIPS SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council’s Warwick Library will welcome author Beverley Buckley to the library on 23 March to speak about her new book ‘Final Days of Judgement’.

Beverley Buckley’s book explains how thought is the tool of creation and suggests that we are in a period of major transition away from a world created in fear to one where we will operate from our fullest potential for love and happiness.

Southern Downs Regional Council’s Library Service invites locals to come along and join in a conversation with Beverley about her latest book at the Warwick Library, 49 Albion Street, on Wednesday 23 March 2016 at 10.30am.

A light morning tea will also be provided. To reserve a place for this free event, call the Warwick Library on 4661 0342 by 21 March 2016.

In the 1980s, Beverley Buckley learnt that her purpose for being on Earth at this time was to access and share knowledge relating to the universal laws that underpin the Earth’s vibrational shift.

Her life’s journey has been defined and guided by this mission. Working with stress defusion, the healing modality she created, Beverley has guided people through personal challenges by facilitating recovery of lost memories.

As a sustainable organic farmer, Beverley studied the application of the laws in the natural world and, as an international educator and workshop facilitator, Beverley teaches how the laws apply to all aspects of life.

REMBEMBER THE SHIELD AM I the only person who fondly remembers the excitement of a Sheffield Shield grand final? Of all those years of pain and heartache when Queensland came just this close to winning but fell short and then finally that epic fist win when Stuart Law’s boys became the toast of Queensland, breaking the 68-year drought in the 1994/'95 final. Those of us who are cricket tragics well remember where we were when big Carl Rackemann took the catch to hand Queensland their first Shield win.

With all the hype and expectation surrounding the start of the footy season and the NRL games starting earlier, the Sheffield Shield recognised as the best domestic cricket competition is these days pushed well into the background. Gone are the heady days of 1995 - in fact most people would not realise that the Sheffield Shield final is yet to be played.

In fact there is still one round of fixtures to be decided.

The Queensland Bulls have closed in on a place in the 2015-'16 Sheffield Shield final after they registered a 100-run victory over the Victorian Bushrangers in a low scoring affair at the Gabba.

The outright victory over the top-of-the-table Bushrangers puts the Bulls just .96 points behind their southern rivals with one remaining.

The Bulls new-ball bowlers wasted no time in making inroads into the visitors’ middle order. Peter George, Warwick’s Mark Steketee and Jack Wildermuth all took early wickets to leave the Bushrangers reeling at 4-48. On the back of another good bowling performance from Bull’s stalwart James Hopes, Queensland grabbed the ascendancy and refused to let go.

Hopes is only two dismals shy of 300 first class wickets - and another seven will see him reach the same mark for the Bulls.

If Queensland can claim outright points against Western Australia in next week’s game at the Gabba, and Victoria lose or draw their match with New South Wales, the Bulls will host the Shield final for the first time since 2012.

Would be nice to get a taste of that 1994/'95 feeling again.

NRL UP AND RUNNING WELL the NRL season is up and running. The opening round was a weekend of carnage with injuries already causing major headaches for some clubs.

The Broncos Cowboys and Titans got the Queenslanders off to a good start. The Cowboys looked a little flat after their win in the UK, but are sure to find their spark. It is early days, and it was obvious teams were lacking match fitness and we will all have a better idea of how the season will play out as there are just a few rounds to have it done and dusted.

The Eels although beaten continue to impress as did the Raiders and there was little wrong with the Dragons performance other than it did not get them competition points.

Former Kiwi coach Graeme Lowe has been scathing of the Warriors suggesting they are suffering from a “Bro” culture - where he’ll be right - we’ll all still be playing next week despite the result. Lowe was straightforward in his assessment of player commitment, saying if they were playing for a team like Brisbane Souths or Melbourne most would find themselves on the bench in game two - ouch - tough love from the once NZ coach.

Meanwhile, Manly and the Roosters look to have let their fans down with subpar performances.

Round two selections BULLDOGS and Penrith get the action underway. Penrith surprised many last weekend, but have their share of injuries. Could be close but sticking with the Dogs.

Broncos are set to beat the Warriors at Suncorp, but expect an improved performance from the Warriors after plenty of bad press at home.

The Raiders are set to beat the Roosters at GIO despite losing Blake Austin with injury - Lachlan Croker has been named to make his NRL debut, starting at five-eighth.

The Bunnies are set to overcome the Knights despite the loss of John Sutton. George Burgess is back from suspension to play his first game of the season and Sam Burgess drops back to lock.

The Eels and Cowboys do battle at Pirtek in what should be a close game. A couple of Eels picked up a couple of injuries in game one, but players have been named to play. For the Cowboys, the same old same old 17 to go around should win.

Sharks host the Dragons in a local derby.

Sharks without Paul Gallen until round seven will be tested.

For the Dragoons, Peter Mata’utia and Jake Marketo have been added to an extended bench - might be the Dragons night.

The Titans travel to AAMI Park to take on the Storm who have named an unchanged side. The Titans looked an improved side, but the Storm

will only improve from round 1. Acid test for the Titans.

Round two finishes with the Tigers hosting the disappointing Eagles. Trent Barret has put the cleaners through the Eagles pack after a shocker.

Josh Starling and Brenton Lawrence come into the side. Nathan Green will play from the bench as Martin Taupau shifts to back row. Jake Trbojevic moves to lock. Tom Trbojevic to play fullback and Brayden Wiliame wing.

BORDERBUSHRANGERS SEASON OPENER BRL and TRL Ladies League tag teams will head to Tenterfield this weekend for the a round robin competition to be played in conjunction with the BRL Bushrangers Under 18s round one TRL game against Wattles. It will be an historic game for the Bushrangers, a combined Under 18 side made up of players from within BRL teams - their first fixture game after being accepted in to the TRL competition.

The Tenterfield Wallangarra Stanthorpe Pittsworth and Goondiwindi are expected to field teams in the round robin. Tenterfield who won back-to-back grand finals will be looking to extend their extraordinary unbeaten run and this round robin will be a real test of their depth and strength. Goondiwindi are one side expected to test the Tigerettes who will start favourites to extend their winning streak.

The annual BRL Men’s round robin is set down for 19 March and will be played in Stanthorpe. Several BRL teams look to be struggling this season for numbers, with some talk that players from different clubs are merging to ensure numbers.

TRL SEASON KICK OFF THE Warwick Cowboys open their 2016 TRL season on Saturday night with a home game against the Gatton Hawks on Saturday night.

The new-look Cowboys side capped off a successful preseason with a win over 2015 premiers Wattles in the annual Barret Shield game last weekend.

Former Killarney Cutters and BRL representative player Mick Bloomfield was outstanding in the 22-12 win over Wattles and looks a real as-

set to the Cowboys this season. Dylan Galloway again showed his class, scoring two tries.

The Wheatvale cricket connection of Paul Cantwell and the Breen brothers also showed their good form is not restricted to the cricket pitch. All have big commitments in this Saturday’s cricket grand final.

Last season’s premiers under new coach Gary Lawrence also fielded a new-look team having lost several players in the offseason. Despite taking a good lead in to the second half of the game, the Cowboys were put under pressure as Wattles reduced the lead to 10 but the horse had bolted and the Cowboys in the end had a comfortable win.

It capped off a clean sweep for the Cowboys who also won the Under 18s 20-6 and Reserve Grade 40-6. The Warwick Ladies League tag team also had a win over Pittsworth.

Wattles open their TRL season with a bye in Round One and will travel to Oakey for their opening game in round two.

MARCH GOOD FOR THOMPSON WALLANGARRA members played for the March Monthly Medal last Saturday. Andrew Thompson had a good day on the course. He claimed pin shots at the third and ninth and returned nett 63 to comfortably win the Monthly Medal.

D. Morris returned 66 to take out the second place and Kevin Williams finished in third place.

Williams also won the putting with 27.

Two other pins went to Morris on 15 and Hampstead snared the second approach.

This Saturday, the club has scheduled a single stroke event. A reminder that visitors are always welcome to join the regular Saturday golfers BETTER CONDITIONS WITH weather conditions a little more bearable last week, there was a good roll up of players at gateball allowed for a different format to be played last week. Players formed two teams for a couple of games of Triples and teams on the second court swapped after the first game to give the single player a break from the action.

After the break, players reverted to the team game with one player playing two balls and all games were closely contested. Accurate shots from Joy Newman and Val Fancourt saw the red team triumph overall in what was an entertaining day.

In the golf croquet competition, Bill Golding and Dianne Wren teamed up to play Elaine Brown and Shirley Page. In a close game, Golding and Wren narrowly defeated their opponents 13 - 11. Wren and Brown both played well each, scoring seven hoops to finish as joint top-scorers in the game.

In the other game, Val Fancourt and Liz Ellway scored a strong 13-4 win over Judy Lock and Teresa Pyne. Liz Ellway top-scored with eight hoops and Val Fancourt scored a jump shot.

After the break, Lock seemed determined to improve her game and paired with Liz Ellway to defeat Dianne Wren and Elaine Brown 13-7. In this game, Wren top scored with seven hoops. Teresa Payne and Shirley Page had a 12-9 win over Fancourt and Golding in the other game. Fancourt scored a hoop in one and Payne top-scored with seven hoops.

Wheatvale booked themselves a spot in this weekend’s Warwick Cricket grand final with an emphatic win over Railway Hotel Rascals last weekend.

An outstanding bowling display from Wheatvale captain Paul Cantwell was undoubtedly the highlight of the game.

Rascals openers were dismissed cheaply, and they were 3/60 when Cantwell entered the attack.

Rascals batsmen had no answers as the in-form Cantwell cut a swathe through the line-up. He finished with a six- wicket haul for the third time in his career taking 6/21 in just eight overs as the Rascals collapsed to be dismissed for only 101.

Local Sport That was a score that never looked likely to be able to be defended. Wheatvale reached the required total for the loss of only one wicket and with more than 30 overs in hand. Ryan Collins top-scored for Wheatvale - dismissed for 47. At the end of the short innings, Brendan Malone (29) and Carter Billborough (12) remained not out.

The Warwick grand final will be played on Saturday at Slade Park, and should be another close contest between the two leading sides this season.

Maryvale Condamine went straight through to the grand final after a strong win over Wheatvale in the first qualifying final two weeks ago. They will be looking for another good performance from their leading wicket taker Dave Walker who took five wickets in that game including the key wickets of Paul Cantwell. They have been consistent all season with both bat and ball, and are sure to start favourites in Saturday’s game, but will need to play at the top of their game to defeat an in-form Wheatvale.

The toss of the coin will be at 9.45am at Slade with play to commence at 10am in the Condamine Cup Grand Final. There will be a presentation of trophies in the Slade club house at the conclusion of the game.

INGLEWOOD BOOK GRAND FINAL SPOT INGLEWOOD will play Colts this weekend in the Warwick Reserve Grade cricket grand final at Mayhew Park after securing their spot in the game with a solid win over Sovereign Animals last weekend.

In a strong showing, Inglewood set their opponents a hefty run chase of 273. Jeremy Ralph found himself stranded two runs shy of a century at the close of the Inglewood innings. His impressive innings included 15 fours. He was well supported by Darren Apted 42 and Tyler Wolff who finished not out 38. Glenn Doyle took two wickets.

The run chase was always going to be tough in the second innings and Animals were dismissed for 160. Josh Klein (38) and Anthony Nero (24) both batted well for Animals as did Chris Baker

LOCAL SCHOOL BOYS STAR TEENAGE cricketers from Stanthorpe and Warwick figured prominently in the Darling Downs schoolboy’s side competing in the State Championships in Charters Towers.

Stanthorpe’s Jordan Lanza who plays for South’s top-scored in Sunday’s game against South Coast. Rain forced the game to be reduced to only 25 overs and Lanza whacked 37 off 52 balls to help set up a win for the Darling Downs side.

Also in the side are Warwick players Pat and

Tom and Mitch Bourke and Tom Morris.

The weather has not been kind to the organisers of the tournament. In Saturday’s game against Metropolitan North, the Darling Downs was well placed at 2/23 off 10 overs, chasing 49 runs when the match was washed out.

In that game, Mitch Bourke was starring with bat, scoring 18 from 23 balls before rain intervened. Tom Morris bowled well in this game, finishing with 1/9 from five overs.

In an earlier game against Capricornia, Tom Bourke and Lanza starred. Lanza top-scored with 17 while team-mate Tom Bourke hit 13 off 15 deliveries and remained not out in the game.

In a tournament that was dogged by bad weather and wet wickets and some substandard pitches, all of the local lads played exceptionally well.

GOLF A BIG HIT OVER FESTIVAL THE Stanthorpe Golf Club wrapped up a busy week of golf events held in conjunction with the Apple and Grape Harvest Festival with a two-ball ambrose event sponsored by Crisps Coaches on Friday.

A big field of 60 golfers played in perfect conditions on fairways and greens that drew some very positive comments from the large contingent of visiting players from NSW and other Queensland centres.

Carding 62 for the round, Peter and John Azard visitors from Gosford took out the event one shot ahead of Jason Lawer and Brendon Barker (63) who were flying the flag for the locals.

Rundowns went to 64 and included Mick O’Brien and Simon Shannon; Matt Waterworth and Nikki Rossow and Don and Stan Spencer.

Don Spencer picked up nearest the pin and the longest drive and Nikki Rossow the ladies' longest drive.

Apple and Grape vice-president and self-confessed golfing tragic Max Hunter said he was delighted with the success of the week and thanked the players and volunteers and the club for an outstanding week of golf.

Normal club games return on Saturday, and on Sunday morning Sporters will be back in action.

ONE FAILURE TOO MANY THE axe has fallen on Queensland Reds coach after an abysmal start to the Super Rugby season.

It was perhaps not as much the back-to-back losses as the manner of the losses that sealed the fate of Richard Graham after their dreary 22-6 defeat at the hands of the Western Force.

There was a real sense that the team had reached a point of no return with the dressing rooms described as morbid following the loss.

Nick Stiles and Matt O’Connor have been named as joint head coaches for the foreseeable future. Both will be encouraged to apply for the head job in 2017. In the meantime, they have a mountain to climb to instil some confidence and winning culture back into the Reds.

Around the grounds playing the next round. If possible a mixed triples game can also be played. Games are play or forfeit. There will be social bowls for those not involved in competitions.

All competitions have now been drawn up and the sheets are on the board.

WARWICK EAST BOWLS On Friday the club held its initial twilight barefoot bowls, with 12 bowlers enjoying a game. This coming Friday the club will be holding barefoot bowls again, this time in conjunction with a sausage sizzle. Play will start at 6pm with names in by 5.30pm.

PREMIER DARTS Results Tuesday 1 March; 2x180s scored tonight again. One by Ioane who also won all his games, scoring 5x80s and eight tons in total. The other one by Warren Young, also won all his games w. 11 tons and 7x80s. Brett had high peg of 100, winning two singles w. 6 tons and 6x80s.

Keith Young and Gary Nash won all their games, Keith w. 9x80s, six tons and Gary had a few less.

Yvonne Carmody also on fire, winning all her games,6x80s and one ton.

Results: Young Ones beat KDDY 6-3, Keith Young and Gary both important w. five pegs.

Just Us beat Don’t Know also 6-3. Both Warren and Iaone scored 180 and lot of tons and had most pegs for their teams.
