Ms Janson also confirmed the rally is aimed at changing the minds of other politicians such as Mr Merlino and premier Daniel Andrews, despite their outspoken support for the program.

“We hope that Mr Merlino and Mr Andrews will see that education should be about teaching children to think, rather than to just follow their feelings and imagine,” she said.

However, Mr Merlino has said that the Safe Schools program was important and the Victorian Government was committed to it both ideologically and financially.

“The SSCV also receives Federal Government funding of $700,000 over three years until 2017 through the Safe Schools Coalition Australia (SSCA) initiative, which is based on the Victorian model.

Mr Merlino also said the program had been supported in the past, and accused the Federal Liberal Party of using Safe Schools as political war ground.

“The Liberal Party is using this issue to fight its own internal wars, with absolutely no consideration given to the pain and suffering they are causing LGBTI students and their families,” he said.

“The Andrews Labor Government is committed to this program because it saves lives.”

“Our town is unique and we want to promote it as a safe space where people can be who they want to be.”

Ms Snowball said Safe in Belgrave supported the Safe Schools Program as it taught principles of acceptance and understanding.

“From our perspective, something that is inclusive and teaches compassion in any walk of life is only a good thing,” Ms Snowball said.

“We think safe places and compassionate communities build stronger communities and that’s what the program does.

“We see it at work in our community, and we want let the world know Belgrave is safe and we are happy to see other communities promote their safe spaces.”

GROUPS of activists from both sides of the ‘Safe Schools’ arguments will rally in Belgrave to march to the office of state Education Minister James Merlino on 16 and 19 March.

The Safe Schools program is funded through both federal and state governments, and is aimed at teaching students in schools about gender and sexuality diversity.

The Australian Christians party has organised the rally against the program that will see people march to the office of Mr Merlino on 16 March.

Hills-based community group, Safe in Belgrave, will be holding a rally on 19 March to show their support for the program.

Mr Merlino has publicly spoken in support of the program, and says it’s an important program to help schools create a more inclusive environment for all students.

“We know that LGBTI people in

Australia have the highest rate of suicide and that same-sex attracted young people are six times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers,” he said.

“These resources make a real difference to young people who are extremely vulnerable.”

Vickie Janson, the Victorian Senate candidate for the Australian Christians party, spoke against the program for a variety of reasons including the program marginalising those outside the LGBTI community.

“Students who support decency toward all but don’t feel they can ‘celebrate’ diversity, due to their own values, norms, life experience or faith, are fearful of being labelled as ‘homophobic’ and bullied in school just because they have a different view of sexuality.

Ms Janson said the purpose of the rally was to allow parents, grandparents and concerned citizens to learn about the content of the ‘Safe Schools’ program and to have a voice in the pub-

Fatal crash charges VICTORIA Police have announced that a Healesville woman, 22, has been charged over a fatal crash in Mount Evelyn last year.

The crash occurred on Hereford Road, Mount Evelyn, about 6.15pm on Tuesday 6 October, 2015.

Former Healesville resident, Amber Beard, 16, was killed in the incident, while all eight other occupants - four men and four women - were injured and taken to various hospitals.

At the time, police said they believed a black 1998 Holden Commodore was travelling south on Hereford Road when the driver lost control and crashed into a pole.

Detective Senior Sergeant Gerard Clanchy, of the Major Collision Investigation Unit (MCIU), said Ms Beard was sitting on the lap of a man, 26, who was in the passenger seat.

In the days following the crash, Amber’s Facebook page was flooded with messages from friends.

Victoria Police said detective from the MCIU have charged the woman, 22, with culpable driving, dangerous driving causing death, conduct endangering life, conduct endangering serious injury and other traffic matters.

The woman has been bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Friday 11 March, this year.

A 20-YEAR-OLD Ferntree Gully man was one of 35 people charged on Friday 4 March as part of Police Operation Taskforce Regarder that targeted hoon behaviour.

A total of nine people were charged after a black 2003 Holden ute was seized from a Dulnain Court home in Hampton Park and an orange VT Holden Commodore from a Greta Court house in Ferntree Gully in the early hours of the morning.

Among those charged were two men from Hampton Park aged 28 and 23, two men from Cranbourne North aged 22 and 23, a 20-year-old Cranbourne South man, an 18-year-old Somerville man, a 28-yearold Langwarrin South man, a 19-year-old Gladstone Park man.

A BALWYN man will front court after being arrested for a Mount Evelyn burglary late last year by Yarra Ranges detectives.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant, Melanie Woods, said at 12.30pm on Thursday 3 March, police arrested a 27-year-old Balwyn man in regards to a burglary and theft in Johns Crescent, Mount Evelyn.

The burglary occurred between 30 December 2015, and 3 January 2016.

Det Sgt Woods said the man was released, pending summons.

Truck hits boom gates POLICE are looking for a

teenage boy and a woman who may have witnessed a logging truck driving through Lilydale’s boom gates last week.

On Thursday 3 March, about 3.40pm, the truck is believed to have hit the gates at the Maroondah Highway level crossing, and continued driving through.

Victoria Police issued a release on Sunday 6 March, saying that the driver of the truck had been identified, but that police were asking for witnesses to come forward.

A teenage boy and a female pedestrian are believed to have been in the vicinity of the incident.

Hold on to rego plates POLICE officers are warning car owners to keep their registration plates safe, with thefts increasing around the Yarra Ranges.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant, Melanie Woods, said that numbers of registration plate thefts were “creeping up” in the area, and police were asking owners to secure their plates.

“People are stealing them to commit further offences,” Det Sgt Woods said.

“It’s everywhere in the state.”

Det Sgt Woods said that police stations, such as Lilydale, had one-way, anti-theft number plate screws.

Firewood collection season has opened THE autumn firewood collection season for this year started last Tuesday, 1 March, and will close on Thursday, 30 June.

Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) operations director (Grampians Region) Rachaele May said it was important that people collected firewood from designated areas and stayed within collection limits.

“This includes taking a maximum of two cubic metres per person per day and a maximum of 16 cubic metres per household per financial year,”

she said.

“Designated collection areas are put in place to protect sites of cultural and environmental significance.

“Also, some households rely on firewood for winter energy so consider others when taking wood.

“People should check where designated collection areas are in their local area.

“They should also check local weather and forest conditions to make sure it’s safe before collecting firewood.”

Briefly AN 83-YEAR-OLD man has died after a car crash in Montrose on Friday 4 March just before 8pm.

The man was a rear passenger of a BMW that collided with a Holden Commodore on the mount Dandenong Tourist Road.

The drivers and the other passengers of both the BMW and the Commodore received minor injuries.

The 83-year-old died in hospital due to injuries sustained during the collision.

Boost for BART

BART is a web-based system the local unit uses to share information about availability of crew and event directions.

This system has been on a free trial

for the past two years but has now become a paid for service.

This doesn’t replace the pager system used by the emergency services but is a great supplement, says Emerald Unit Controller, Ben Owen.

“BART makes communication between members instantaneous rather than relying on telephone calls,” he said.

“The system uses smartphone technology to provide the service.”

Police figures correct I WRITE in response to Geoff Champion’s letter ‘Doesn’t add up’ (Mail, 23 February) in which he alleges the information I recently provided to local residents regarding police numbers was incorrect.

The information I provided, that crime was up and police numbers were down, was based on official Victoria Police and Crime Statistics Agency data available as at the date of my correspondence.

The most recent Victoria Police statistics at the date of my letter revealed that the total number of sworn police (FTE) as at September 2015 was 13,142 compared to 13,151 in November 2014, a net reduction of nine police.

And for the year to September 2015, the Crime Statistics Agency reported that total offences for the Yarra Ranges LGA (Local Government Area) increased by 1.5 per cent to 7421, up from 7344 in the previous year and is up 20.5 per cent compared to September 2011.

In fact, some suburbs saw much greater increases over the year to September 2015, including Mr Champion’s home of Mount Dandenong, which saw total offences increase by 30.2 per cent, Kilsyth by 26.7 per cent, Montrose by 19.8 per cent, Upwey by 12.8 per cent and Mooroolbark by 8.3 per cent.

Mr Champion also raised the issue of the government’s plan to deploy 400 custody officers.

By the end of December 2015, 13 months after the last state election, no custody officers had yet been trained and deployed.

The Victorian Coalition in government was proud to deliver the single largest police recruitment program in history with 1900 police and 950 PSOs deployed over four years, which is in stark contrast to the Andrews Labor Government that failed to commit to any additional new sworn police at the 2014 state election.

THE Victorian Government will soon make a decision on a return to unconventional gas exploration within the state.

But a group of Hills residents say a provisional moratorium that presently disallows further exploration, along with the practice of fracking, should remain in place.

About 50 concerned citizens gathered at the iconic Puffing Billy trestle bridge on Sunday, 28 February, to express their concerns, particularly with fracking.

In August 2012, the Victorian Government introduced a state-wide moratorium on the unconventional gas sector.

But the moratorium is set for review, which may greatly affect the Gippsland and Otway basins.

In particular, tight gas has been located in Seaspray in Gippsland.

Mr Barnes said much hinged on the government’s decision.

“We may not have exploration licences directly over our area, but our underground water is interconnected,” he said.

LYMPHOEDEMA patients in the Yarra Ranges will have to travel to Ringwood East or beyond for treatment, after Eastern Health closed down all related services last month.

Eastern Health ceased its services on Friday 12 February for lymphoedema, a condition where parts of the body swell up, which were offered at Yarra Ranges Health in Lilydale, Angliss Hospital and Box Hill Hospital.

A letter to patients, passed on anonymously to the Mail, dated 1 February, said that the organisation had “a responsibility to live within our means” and would be ceasing its services less than two weeks later.

The letter also listed other providers of treatment for the condition, such as Eastern Access Community Health (EACH) in Ringwood East, Mercy Hospital in Heidelberg or Moorabbin’s Monash Health.

Yarra Valley Ladies in Pink (YVLiP)’s Judy Sturt, is living with lymphoedema in her arm and wears a compression sleeve to reduce swelling.

She had received treatment from Eastern Health, and said the closure of services made treatment less acceptable for those living in the Yarra Ranges, particularly those who were unable to transport themselves.

“Now they’re telling us, now they’re closing down, that we have to go to Monash,” she said.

“It’s going to make a huge impact.”

Lymphoedema can cause swelling in any part of the body, but often affects arms and legs, and people who have undergone surgery and radiotherapy for cancer are susceptible to developing it.

Treatment includes physical therapy, compression bandages, exercises, medication, laser therapy and massage, and those at high risk of developing the condition can receive preventative care.

The Mail contacted Eastern Health about the announcement, and Chief of Clinical and Site Operations in Yarra Ranges, Lisa Lynch, confirmed that the service was finished “following a comprehensive review”.

I WAS excited to visit numerous sporting clubs across the Casey electorate over the past few weeks to announce important funding as part of the Turnbull Government’s Stronger Communities Program.

This program provides funding for small-scale local infrastructure proj-

ects, ranging from $5000 to $20,000, which are matched at least dollar for dollar.

Following consultation with my committee of local representatives, projects that encouraged female and youth participation in sport were successfully recommended as priorities.

As a result, netball courts in Powelltown, Yarra Junction, Woori Yallock, Seville, Monbulk and Montrose will undergo court resurfacing or receive new shelters, while the Yarra Glen Tennis Club will have new Hot Shots courts for junior players.

Yarra Glen, Powelltown, Yarra Junction, Seville, and Monbulk will

each receive $18,000 of Federal Government funding.

Woori Yallock will receive $20,000, and Montrose will receive $14,660.

Thanks to my committee - Brett Whelan, Toni Madden, Caroline Evans, and Blake Hadlow - for their help in recommending these priority local projects.

Thanks also to Yarra Ranges Council, which will provide a matched contribution towards these projects.

Since my last update, it has been great to deliver on more of my election commitments, including another new school car park, two more Green Army projects and more CCTV cameras.

Woori Yallock Primary School students, parents, and teachers now have a new and safe $259,000 car park, which will be of benefit to the school and the wider Woori Yallock community.

This project completes my election pledge to deliver new car parks for Launching Place Primary School and Woori Yallock Primary School.

Last month, I joined both the Monbulk and Healesville Green Army teams for their graduations, following the completion of their works across Baynes Park Reserve and Frank Irvine Reserve in Monbulk, and Maroondah Reservoir Park in Healesville.

It was great to also launch the third

CCTV camera network that I pledged at the last election.

We officially switched on the cameras in Healesville in December, which were strongly welcomed by the local traders, residents and police.

These cameras are in addition to those that have already been launched in Lilydale and Yarra Junction.

Finally, I was also pleased to recognise the hard work of our volunteers at the Casey Community Volunteer Awards late last year.

I look forward to working with you to make even more of a difference in our local community this year.

Gym backing Watson’s lofty aspiration

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS EMERALD Community Gym at Worrell Reserve has extended a helping hand to a local man with Paralympic ambitions.

The non-for-profit community gym has given free membership to Rod Watson who lost the use of his legs in 2013.

Mr Watson was riding his dirt bike in the Gembrook State Forest when he landed the wrong way coming off a jump and irreversibly damaged his spine.

He was determined to maintain his fitness despite the injury and continued to maintain a gym schedule despite now being completely paraplegic.

Mr Watson started power lifting as soon as he could after his accident to maintain some fitness and strength while he adjusted to life in a wheelchair.

In the last three years, he has competed in Australian power lifting championships, and is on his way to qualifying for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

“It’s great to have the support,” Mr Watson said.

“It’s really given me a lot of drive, and I’ve been overwhelmed with community support.”

Peter Masterson, secretary of the Emerald Community Gym Inc., said the gym was proud to be helping Mr Watson to achieve his goals.

“It’s all part of our mission statement,” Mr Masterson said.

“We aim to provide services for disadvantaged community members at a

significantly reduced price.”

Me Masterson said the gym had a mission to make the most of the space they used to best benefit the community.

“We use community facilities specifically to give back to the community.”

Rod said he was determined to get the results he wanted from weightlifting and cannot thank everyone enough for all the support they had given him.

A PLANNING application for the subdivision of the historic ‘Glen Harrow’ estate in Belgrave will be put through Yarra Ranges Council for a third time in six years.

The applicants are seeking approval to subdivide the land, remove vegetation from the estate and build a new driveway next to Trees Adventure on Old Monbulk Road.

The planning application has received a number of submissions in opposition, citing concerns from the community including unclear plans, potential for commercial use, traffic and car parking, impacts upon the treed environment and heritage value, and wildlife habitat and more.

A previous application to use the same lot for a store and two bed and breakfast buildings was refused by council in 2010.

Another application for a three-lot subdivision never made it before council for a vote after the planning permit lapsed in 2011.

The most recent application to divide the land into two lots was refused by council in 2013 and VCAT affirmed the council’s decision later that same year.

One Belgrave resident raised concerns with The Mail about the traffic a subdivision and possible development of the land might bring.

“Belgrave and the hills are getting more and more populated,” the resident said.

“There is already gridlock in Belgrave most days and it never used to happen, even a few years ago.”

The matter will be put before the council on Tuesday night 8 March.

Big futures assured at school IT’S now back to school for many young people, with the commencement of university programs and the beginning of new pathways.

Former Mater Christi student and Belgrave resident Isobelle Caterer has entered the course of her dreams, Film and Television at Swinburne University.

“I love the artistic world, especially the magic that is film,” Isobelle said.

“I’m so excited about this course where I can immerse in the industry and explore mine and others’ creativity in this generation of film-making.”

As a passionate drama student, Isobelle also received a VCE Season of Excellence Award in Top Class and will be performing on Monday, 21 March, at The Arts Centre, Playhouse Theatre.

Isobelle was among many students recently recognised by Mater Christi for their high achievements in 2015.

Principal Mary FitzGerald says the college prides itself on developing strong, resilient young women who will thrive in whatever path they choose.

“We continue to be affirmed by the diversity of achievements as evidenced by students attaining scores of 40 or higher in 28 different studies, as well as by the array of pathways being pursued,” she said.

“Overall, 94 per cent of our students were offered tertiary places.”

Students were offered places in courses as varied as engineering, event management, interior design, animal and veterinary bioscience, nursing, legal practice and film and television.

“The diversity of pathways is very exciting and reflects the adventurous spirit of our girls as they pursue their individual goals and aspirations,” she said.

“It also reflects the opportunities and breadth of programs available to the students while at Mater Christi.”

Mater Christi is inviting visitors to tour the college on International Women’s Day, Tuesday, 8 March, between 9am and 2.30pm.

Outspoken DURING the early part of term one, Mount Lilydale Mercy College was fortunate to have two worldrenowned speakers visit the college and present to staff and students.

MOIRA KELLY AO Moira Kelly AO visited Mount Lilydale Mercy College at the beginning of February to speak with Year 12 students before their annual retreat program.

She shared with them her life story of caring for children and making a difference.

Moira spent many years living overseas and caring for sick and needy children and their families in countries such as India, South Africa, Romania, Bosnia and Albania.

She was inspired by her mentor and hero, Mother Teresa, and her aim was to bring at least two needy children a year to Australia for medical operations, for schooling and to experience the love, compassion and generosity that permeate her home always.

Moira continues to bring two children a year to Australia through the Moira Kelly Creating Hope Foundation for treatment and is currently providing accommodation for 14 children at her home in Kilmore.

Moira’s humanitarian work has been recognised and acknowledged by several awards over the years and in 2001 she was awarded an Order of Australia.

Students were mesmerised during a performance by Emmanuel.

He told the audience to live their dreams and never give up, no matter what the circumstances.

HUGH VAN CUYLENBURG - THE RESILENCE PROJECT (‘Helping young Australians to be mentally healthy’) Hugh, who is a sought after speaker and has facilitated programs to over 220 schools Australia wide, visited the college in February as part of the Year 7 ‘Stepping Up’ Program.

Hugh’s background is in education as a primary school teacher and he spent one year in India volunteering and living at an underprivileged school in the Himalayas.

It is here he discovered ‘resilience’ in its purest form.

He shared his incredible story with Year 7 students and emphasised the value of gratitude, empathy and mindfulness.

Hugh spoke to the students about his experiences teaching in India and the journey that led him to understand that practicing the three key principles of gratitude, empathy and mindfulness can help to maintain good mental health.

Hugh was a very engaging and humorous speaker and he left the students feeling positive about their future.

Plague proportion parasites EACH spring, summer and early autumn, these pesky parasites come to the Dandenong Ranges in plague proportions to affect dogs, cats and small pets.

It is the larval stage of the tick life-cycle that causes the problem.

Adult ticks are easy to spot as large blood-filled blisters on the skin.

The larval stage ticks are difficult to identify without a microscope.

They cause intense itching as they burrow into a pet’s skin.

There can be hundreds of them, which feel like small scabs usually inside the front legs, between the toes of the paws, under the belly or on the face.

Some pets go crazy, running up and down hallways and scratching or chewing at the affected areas on the face and legs.

Long grass is where the ticks sit, waiting for a suitable animal host to walk past so they can attach.

The ticks usually feed at night, so if you see these symptoms in the middle of the night, don’t forget to mention the possibility of larval stage ticks to the emergency vet if you call.

Treatment may involve

cortisone to relieve the intense inflammation, sedatives and tick control, and prevention.

Luckily, these ticks aren’t the paralysis ticks found along the eastern Australian coastline.

They cause intense irritation but aren’t deadly unless there are so many ticks that a very small pet becomes anemic from blood loss.

At Dandenong Ranges Veterinary Centre, they advise using a three-month duration chewable treatment that kills fleas and ticks.

It is only suitable for dogs and they’ve packaged it as part of their cost saving Platinum Paws Program.

Treatment for cats may involve the use of a certain topical spot on medication or a spray that can last up to one month against ticks and three months against fleas.

Most treatments that are suitable for dogs are toxic to cats, so seek veterinary advice before applying any treatments.

AFTER a successful reopening late last year, the Olinda Pool has enjoyed a strong, consistent turn out of pool-goers. To celebrate the fine achievement, a pool party was held on Sunday 6 March.

The Olinda CFA played a big part in the festivities, through getting involved and giving the pool-goers a refreshing reprieve from the hot weather. Mail photographer Greg Carrick was on hand to capture the fun.

THE future of the Upwey community is in good shape, as three local leaders have pledged to spearhead the township towards further prosperity.

Of particular importance is the recent establishment of the Businesses of Upwey Group, which is now headed by president Sue Williams and complements two other vital groups, Project Upwey and the Upwey Township Group.

Ms Williams has long been a key driver within the community, through being active in

other local groups while running a cafe and healing centre in Upwey.

She said the formation of the new group would add further weight to the township's status as a hub of small business.

Ms Williams said the group aimed to enrich the lives of residents and enhance pride in the town.

Meanwhile, the Project Upwey team involves about 50 community volunteers who offer their skills and time for the improvement of the town.

Upwey Township Group President, Heather Liney, envisions a community where everyone feels they can join in and be part of activities and events that make Upwey a great town to live in.

The trio said they would like the community to support their efforts.

Bears win the week off

By IAN HARLEY THE Basin has won the right to host the Norm Reeves Shield grand final in two weeks’ time, meeting the winner of Knoxfield and Belgrave, which will face each other next week at Carrington Park.

Chasing 239, the Knights needed partnerships.

Sadly, only Ben Gerloff (41) and Luke Scanlan (44) held some sway over the Basin bowling.

The Bears attack shared the early wickets around, but it was Scott Vozzo who imposed himself on the game, taking 4/40 as the Knights struggled to make any inroads and were dismissed for 160.

On day one, Knoxfield would have been happy to see the back of Jake Best and have The Basin 2/26 in the first 13 overs of the day.

The Bears fought back with Danny Rundle (30), Josh Lee (70) and Jayden Turcinovic (51) combining to get the Bears to 3/141.

Enter Mitch Burley: snaring the wickets of Turcinovic, Vozzo, and Heskes in four overs.

The Basin fell to 7/163 before Steve Ryan (45) joined Lee getting them past 200.

The Bears finished the day at 9/239.

For the Knights, Scott McKenzie took the two early wickets and came back to remove Lee, while Luke Scanlan also took three wickets.

The Knights have lost their past three games and will face a buoyant Belgrave, which were involved in an epic arm wrestle with Ferntree Gully.

The Blues started their run chase on day two in the worst possible way, loosing 2/1, but it was Jayden Bradbury who stepped to the fore and anchored the Ferntree Gully run chase.

Bradbury enjoyed partnerships with Wayne McInerney (39), Bryce Galvin (47) and Shane Richardson (51) before being dismissed for 123 with the score at 6/252.

Shane Richardson managed to muster the tail to 8/292 before he fell.

The game ended in the 78th over, with the last wicket putting on a partnership of 34 for an agonisingly close total of 326.

The Magpies, a bowler down with the injury to Fernando, chipped away at the Blues line-up and never seemed to panick.

Youngster Tyler Argoon was entrusted with bowling at the death and picked up 3/52.

Luke Manion snaffled four wickets, including the wicket of Bradbury.

Belgrave were sent in to bat on day one and the Blues had the wickets of Levell and Oaten back in the shed with 29 on the scoreboard.

This brought Dinusha Fernando to the wicket, joining Robert Broley in a 134-run partnership.

Broley was out after tea for a wellcompiled 51.

Simon Hill then joined Fernando to take the score to 3/225 before Hill was out for 40.

Dinusha finally retired hurt after injuring his back on 120, leaving Matt Johnson (55no) to bring the Belgrave total to 6/343.

In DeCoite Shield, Upper Gully

hosted Lysterfield and batted first.

The Lysterfield attack had removed Peter Dunlop, Josh Dowling and Guy Balmford inside the first 23 overs to have the Kings on the backfoot at 4/56.

Upper Gully made it to 6/94 at tea before being dismissed for 130 with Adam Kinniburgh claiming five scalps.

The Kings came out firing and reduced the Beavers to 2/8 with Nathan Walsh out, before a wicket in the final over saw Lysterfield finish the day on 3/33.

Day two saw wickets fall regularly whenever The Beavers looked to take control of the game.

Steve Collard was the best of the bowlers for the Kings, who maintained pressure on the Beavers batting line-up from ball one.

The Kings will now await the winner of Lysterfield and Auravale.

Aura Vale set Footballers a target of 331 for victory after Brad Miles struck a century for the Lakers.

Daniel Morrison (58) and Troy McDermott (34) also chimed in to cause the Griffens some pain.

In reply, Footballers started well losing their first wicket at 47.

With the score at 3/80, Nicholas Bogar (100) joined Cohen McElroy (50) and set about chasing down the target with a 113-run partnership.

Unfortunately for the Bears, the dismissal of McElroy and Lakshita saw Footballers lose 6/36 to finish with 267.

Rivals merge to clinch cup solution

AT the beginning of this cricket season, the Under 13s Belgrave South Cricket team had only three members, but a merger with long-term rivals has brought about success.

The Belgrave South team and eight players from the Belgrave team put a rivalry as old as anyone can remember aside to create the South Belgrave-Belgrave Under 13s cricket team.

As the players progressed through the season, it was as if they had been a full team their whole history, ending up second on the ladder at the end of the regular playing season.

The smaller merged club came face to face with the much larger Eildon Park who landed on top place of the ladder.

At the end of the first day of the grand final match, the teams were neck and neck with Belgrave SouthBelgrave at 2/62 and Eildon Park at 3/60.

The second day of play for the grand final saw Belgrave SouthBelgrave batting first and losing a few players quickly, but the underdogs turning the game and ending on 8/118 at half time.

The speech did the trick and the newly formed Belgrave South-Belgrave Under 13s cricket team took out the grand final with a 30-run victory over Eildon Park.

YARRA Ranges Athletics hosted day two of the Little Athletics Victoria State Multi Event Championships on Sunday at Morrison Reserve, Mount Evelyn.

It was the first-ever Victorian State championship to be held at the fantastic venue.

The original competition, which was due to be held in Bendigo in late January, was cancelled due to extreme storms on the day.

Watched by the resident wedgetailed eagles, several Yarra Ranges Athletics athletes competed on the day.

All athletes performed extremely well in the hot conditions.

Motoring Peter’s just Mad for Max

By KATH GANNAWAY PETER Axford’s first car was an XB Falcon coupe.

He bought it at 18 and it was the first tentative step towards fulfilling a dream he’d had since he was a 10-yearold Mad Max fan.

He wanted the Interceptor.

Reality got in the way and as a young Yarra Valley tradie establishing a landscaping business, his would-be Interceptor was sacrificed for a workhorse - the tradie’s ute.

It wasn’t until 13 years ago, with the business on the go, that he resurrected the dream and bought his ’74 XB. It wasn’t beautiful, but it was black.

The Interceptor is integral to the cult following Mad Max has garnered over the past 40 years.

Film-makers Byron Kennedy and George Miller began pre-production on Mad Max in 1976 and were looking for a high-powered, evil-looking Australian car to play the role of the black police Interceptor.

The transformation from street car to the Interceptor that took on a sinister presence of its own in Mad Max (1979) and the sequel, Mad Max 2 (1981), is part of Australia’s film history.

Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome followed in 1985 and 30 years down the track Mad Max Fury Road was released last year.

Peter bought the car over the internet.

“It was pretty run-down, a bad-looking thing really, but I’d loved Mad Max since I was a kid and my whole life plan was to get one of these cars,” he said.

“It was just something I had to do.”

He took it back to the base and had it resprayed before fitting the full Mad Max body kit.

The 671 blower on the bonnet, the flares, nose cones and, the Scott injector hat were shaped from the original moulds.

The fascination continues inside with an original overhead CB radio on the console.

A 460 Big Block engine provides the grunt that Mad Max fans expect when the bonnet goes up.

But, for Peter is not just about living the dream, it’s about sharing the dream.

Their next big outing will be in the Moomba Parade on Monday, 14 March, as part of the movie trio - Mad Max, the '60s Batmobile and the DeLorean time machine from Back to the Future.

Peter says one of his most memorable gigs has been as the lead car at a funeral of a Mad Max fan.

He died just three months after they met at the hospital where he was being treated.

“The family rang me and asked if I could drive in the procession,” Peter says.

“I was leading the procession with the coffin carriage behind me with all the family.

“It felt so good to be able to do that, because that’s what he wanted.”

The car is also the mascot for Yarra Valley FM 99.1 where Peter, his partner, Cas, and a third member of the crew, The Tone Ranger, present a radio show every Thursday night from 7pm to 9pm.

While Peter’s approach is to just park the car and let people appreciate as fellow fans, he is also happy to share his passion for the Mad Max phenomenon.

He can talk the movies and can make a convincing case as to why Mad Max 1 and 2 are his favourites, has had dinner with George Miller and has a glovebox full of autographs of the actors and stuntmen.

Fury Road is not a favourite (“too Hollywood”), but it has reignited the Mad Max passion for a whole new generation of fans, and, from Peter’s experience, that’s the stuff dreams are made of.

SUV perfect fit for market TOYOTA Australia is set to enter the fastest-growing segment of the local market with the daringly styled C-HR compact crossover vehicle.

The company’s newest SUV is slated for an early 2017 arrival in local dealerships after a muchanticipated world premiere of the production model at this year’s Geneva motor show.

Toyota Australia’s executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the eye-catching C-HR will be the company’s first entrant in the highly competitive small SUV category, which has almost tripled in size during the past four years.

An all-new platform, developed as part of Toyota’s New Generation Architecture philosophy, delivers sharp driving dynamics supported by a highly rigid body structure and low centre of gravity.

A new-generation 1.2-litre direct-injection turbo-charged petrol engine fitted to Australian variants generates impressive acceleration and responsiveness.

The 85kW four-cylinder direct-injection engine is characterised by abundant torque at low engine and vehicle speeds, achieving its peak of 185Nm at just 1500rpm and maintaining it all the way to 4000rpm*.

Peak collision period RACV has urged students to be alert and ensure their vehicles are adequately insured as they head back to university during a peak car collision period.

New RACV Insurance claims data for the past five financial years reveals that March and May record the highest number of vehicle collisions.

RACV General Manager Insurance, Paul Northey, said RACV claims figures highlighted that most accidents happened after noon, peaking between 4pm and 5pm.

“Young drivers are most at risk as soon as they obtain a probationary licence,” Mr Northey said.

“In the first year of driving, their risk of crashing is three times higher than an experienced driver.

“As well as concentrating on their own driving, all motorists must anticipate the

actions others on the road.

“Our claims data shows that the other party was at fault in 31 per cent of collision claims in 2015, while 39 per cent were caused by the insured.”

On average, RACV processes more than 75,000 collision claims each year.

The value of claims has been steadily rising and in 2015 repairs or replacements cost almost $370 million, 15 per cent higher than in 2011.

The Melbourne City Council area recorded the highest number of collisions last year with 4885 claims, followed by Brimbank City Council (4163 claims) and Monash City Council (3482 claims).

Mr Northey said uninsured motorists involved in an accident potentially faced costly repairs to their vehicle and liability for any damage and caused to other vehicles or property.
