By ALANA MITCHELSON A man seriously injured a 90-year-old woman and her middle-aged daugher when he crashed into a Norlane home while fleeing police, a court heard yesterday.

Scott O’Keefe, 43, of Batesford pleaded guilty in Geelong Magistrates’ Court to charges including reckless conduct causing serious injury.

O’Keefe “took off at a fast pace” after police pulled him over on the Princes Highway in April, prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Kylie Jane said.

“The car collided with the front wall of the house (and) police found Mr O’Keefe on the ground near the car,” she said.

“A 56-year-old woman and her 90-year-old mother were both in the lounge of the house at the time of the crash. They were conveyed to the Geelong hospital, both suffering injuries.

“The 90-year-old woman suffered serious injuries, a fractured pelvis and ongoing pain. The 56-year-old suffered shock and bruising.”

The older woman’s victim impact statement said her injuries left feeling like a burden on her family.

She was now unable to walk freely and required assistance to shower and dress.

“I am unable to tend to my garden and gardening was my life,” her statement read.

The woman felt “lost and depressed” and “too fearful” to return to her home of 50 years.

China in ‘huge’ wine deal

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A Chinese entertainment megastar has chosen Geelong’s Mt Duneed Estate for a huge wine export deal.

A launch today at Mt Duneed will announce a deal to export an initial order of 800,000 bottles of local wine which is expected to sell out within months and with millions more to follow.

The deal would make Mt Duneed the “spiritual home” of the largest private label export of Australian wines to China.

But the massive volume required would need wineries all over Victoria contributing to the production. The man behind the deal is Chinese entertainer and comedian Guo Degang, who has his own wine label, De Yun Wine.

Mt Duneed’s Matt Brown said the wine and tourism opportunities were exciting.

“I was fortunate enough to be asked to assist in putting this concept together and things have worked out,” Mr Brown said.

“Mr Guo had connections to the region and we’re lucky he liked it and was keen to find someone to be involved.

“Having a bit of profile though events like a Day on the Green and artists like Sting and Paul Simon here helped.

“It builds on the activities we’re developing upon at the venue, so we were in a good position when the opportunity arose.”

Mr Brown said the deal cemented a strong relationship in one of Australia’s burgeoning wine mar-

kets with a flow-on into tourism.

“It’s an exciting opportunity because we’re en route to the Surf Coast and the 12 Apostles.”

The invitation to today’s launch said Mr Guo had more than 64 million followers on Chinese social media and 144 million viewers of his weekly television programs.

A major media launch in China at the end of March will reach hundreds of millions of Mr Guo’s fans, putting Geelong on the tourist maps for Chinese visitors.

Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson said it was “an incredible deal” for the region.

The Turnbull government’s free-trade arrangement with China helped deliver the wine deal, she said.

Mark Sheen, 23, pleaded not guilty over the alleged 2015 hit-run death as the trial continued before Justice Lex Lasry in the Supreme Court yesterday.

Chemical leak Thirty-five people have ended up in hospital after a toxic chemical spill at Little River that closed lanes on the nearby Princes Freeway.

The chemicals apparently leaked from a crack on a truck tanker when the vehicle arrived at the town’s service station on Wednesday afternoon, police said.

A 62-year-old man has survived three hours floating on Port Philip in the dark after his sea kayak was swamped off Portarlington near sunset on Wednesday.

A passing vessel brought him to shore around 11pm after finding him in his floatation vest about 500 metres offshore, Victoria Police said.

by Thursday.

WorkSafe and the State Government announced last week that Quintessential Equity had won a contract for the new $120 million building at 1 Malop Street.

The 14-storey building will house WorkSafe when completed in 2018. The agency will begin relocating to Geelong later this year, taking up office space in the TAC offices.

The owner of Corio Street business Stirling Floors said he received notice to vacate by 10 March.

“I was told the demolition would begin the next day so I have to be out, lock, stock and barrel,” Richard Goodall said.

“I’d normally get three months’ notice but I’ve been on a month-by-month lease for a little while.”

Mr Goodall said he would need the remaining days of the notice period just to sort out his stock.

His business had been trading on the site, next to the Wool Exchange, for 37 years.

Mr Goodall planned to relocate the business to his Grovedale home and take his rug sales online.

The 15,000-square-metre WorkSafe office will house 700 staff, extending above and an historic Dalgety and Co building at the north-western entry to the city centre.

Beaches restoration Two Geelong beaches will be restored as part of plans for an $80 million residential development at Rippleside, the State Government has announced.

The improvements would include a 600m promenade linking renourished St Helen’s and Rippleside beaches and remediation of an historic pier neat the Balmoral Quay development, the government said.

Roundabout upgrade A $3 million roundabout upgrade in central Anglesea could ease summer traffic congestion on the Great Ocean Road.

The State Government has revealed plans to widen the roundabout with two lanes in either direction at the notorious touristseason bottleneck.

Festival fundraiser Next week’s Motor City Music Festival will help raise funds for a facility to assist victims of acquired brain injury (ABI), according to its proponent.

Welfare agency Karingal said its Eastern Hub centre would house a clubhouse for ABI sufferers, which would benefit from the “outstanding community-focused festival”.

Magistrate Gerard Lethbridge said imprisonment was “inevitable and usually substantial” for anyone with O’Keefe’s “very poor prior record”.

The case was still in session at press time.

Keen Indy readers might have noted the ongoing transformation of Geelong Trades Hall boss Tim Gooden, as represented in last week’s paper.

And, as befitting the head of any organisation, Tim’s new look was all about fashions worn upon the noggin. Tim appeared as the Victorian version of bandana-wearing Sydney author Peter FitzSimons, although opting for a headpiece in an eye-catching patterned yellow instead of the harsh red favoured by the New South Welshman.

Has Pako Festa lost the plot? The answer seems in the affirmative after last weekend’s event, which seemed more carnivale than multicultural. Traditionally a celebration of Geelongs’ numerous ethnic communities, the festa on Saturday included everything from sustainability stalls to Star Wars characters.

The trend away from the festa’s multicultural roots toward a free-for-all of expression possibly began around a decade ago with the introduction of TV soapie stars as parade paragons.

obscure enthnic association have further diluted the purpose of Pako over the years.

Double Take looks forward nervously to what next year’s event brings – hopefully it’s more festa than fester.

The question of Geelong’s heritage has been long and bedevilled, with much of it lost over the years. It seems Geelongites by and large see the city’s heritage as nice - but not necessary.

Federal Corio MP Richard Marles bemoaned the situation in parliament this week, conceding that Geelong did not celebrate its “rich and proud” heritage as well as Ballarat and Bendigo.

He suggested that City Hall should install a series of plaques around the town marking the stories and significance of historical sites citing the example of London’s blue-plaque system.

Glassing thug in jail ‘default’ call

By ALANA MITCHELSON A Geelong magistrate has stressed the danger of glassing incidents after a man pleaded guilty on Thursday to assaulting a hotel patron with a broken bottle.

Justin Custo, 22, of Sunshine, appeared in Geelong Magistrates’ Court on charges including recklessly causing injury at Barwon Heads Hotel on 28 February 2015.

The police prosecutor said that around midnight Custo began arguing with his victim over who should be served first at the bar.

“The accused either headbutts or punches the victim’s nose causing it to bleed.

“The men later enter into a fist confrontation, during which Mr Custo smashes a glass bottle and uses it as a weapon to continuously strike the

victim, who was on the ground, around the head area,” the prosecutor told the court.

“The victim suffered cuts to the head, which caused him to bleed. The attack lasted for several blows before a security guard attempted to restrain him.”

Custo then punched the security guard four or five times, the prosecutor said.

Custo’s barrister Terry Strong said his client acknowledged he committed a “very, very serious assault”.

Magistrate Gerard Lethbridge said a judgement in a glassing case in Melbourne would be “relevant precedence” for Custo’s sentence.

Mr Lethbridge said that before sentencing Custo he would consult authorities on whether imprisonment should be a default penalty for glassing offences.

Canberra put under votes pressure Fifteen local government figures have flown to Canberra to lobby for projects across the Geelong region.

Mayors, councillors, shire chiefs and board members of an alliance group for the region’s five municipalities made the trip ahead of this year’s federal election.

The meetings of the G21 Geelong Region Alliance delegation included Mayor Darryn Lyons talking with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull about revitalising central Geelong and winning work on the Commonwealth’s Land 400 armoured vehicle project.

G21 chief Elaine Carbines said the delegation targeted key politicians and advisers.

“With a federal election this year, now is the

“When election promises are being made over coming months we want politicians to have the G21 region’s specific priorities front-of-mind.

John Olsen jokes that his final charity long walk will be the easiest because it’s all downhill.

The Belmont resident will attempt the first diagonal solo walk from Queensland’s Cape York to Western Australia’s Cape Leeuwin.

“I’ve been told that it will definitely be my last walk,” Mr Olsen said.

After knee surgery, Mr Olsen said he would heed doctor’s advice to retire from the fund-raising long distance walking game.

Mr Olsen has already completed two long walks, from Cape York to South West Cape in Tasmania in 2004 and from Steep Point in WA to Byron Bay in New South Wales in 2008.

Having done the north-south and west-east routes, Mr Olsen said the diagonal journey from the north-east to the south-west was his only remaining option.

But he is determined to complete the arduous challenge in honour of his partner, Vida, who lost a battle with leukodystrophy in 2014.

His fund-raising efforts will be directed to Leukodystrophy Australia after raising thousands of dollars for Lions Australia Children’s Mobility Foundation.

“It’s given me a focus now,” Mr Olsen said simply.

“No-one has ever done a diagonal walk across Australia, but it will be on tracks all the way so it will be a bit easier,” he said.

His previous walks included crossing untracked desert areas.

He estimates it will take him five months to cover the distance, doing about 250 kilometres a week.

Eschewing the use of a support vehicle, Mr Olsen pulls a purpose-built two wheeled cart, fondly called Wilson, and make camp along the way.

He collects food and water where he can along the journey.

Mr Olsen plans to start his final walk on 1 April. His progress can be tracked at thelongwalk. org.au where donations will also be accepted.

New skills pilot means business

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Barwon Health, GMHBA and Bendigo Bank are among five local employers in an Australian-first pilot program in Geelong involving big business in the educational curriculum.

The other two are educational software company Tribal Campus and valuers Opteon Property group, participating in teaching 80 Year 9 students.

The pilot program, Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH) is hosted at

Newcomb Secondary College.

Federal Government allocated $500,000 to the pilot program, with another P-Tech class for 20 students established in Ballarat at Federation College with multi-national IT company IBM. The concept generated controversy because it involved private enterprise helping to shape a curriculum, with critics saying business needs could override educational goals.

Education Minister Simon Birmingham said the pilot was compulsory for more than 80 Year 9 students participating in the first year of the trial.

The program would become an elective from Year 10 onwards with students working with local employers to develop science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) skills, he said.

“The P-Tech model is providing a pathway to work and employment for these school students,” Mr Birmingham said.

“It is providing them with a real introduction to the world of work and ensuring they develop understanding what it is that employers are looking for.”

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN The honours keep piling up for Ocean Grove cabinetmaker Kate Elstone, who will jet off to Nepal after receiving a rare invitation to the International Young Adults Furniture Making event.

Instead of being a participant Kate will heading back for World Wood Day to head up one of five collaborative design and construction teams.

The International Young Adults Furniture Making Invitational (IYAFMI) will be held in Kathmandu, Nepal from 21 March.

Kate’s role at the week-long celebrations will include guiding first time invitees through the experience of performing a trade and craft in front of thousands of onlookers.

She will have just four days to see her team’s project grow from concept to finished product.

Kate is no stranger to the challenge as she participated as a first time invitee in the event held in Turkey last year.

Kate garnered the invitation after winning a gold medal at the regional WorldSkills competition and then competing in the national event in Perth. She will compete at this year’s nationals in Melbourne as well.

On crash course Geelong is a hotspot for university students crashing cars, according to RACV figures.

Geelong was eighth on a list of the top 15 municipalities for car collision insurance claims with 2357.

RACV’s Paul Northey said several local government areas ranking in the top 15 for collisions were also home to Victoria’s largest universities Deakin University has two major campuses in the region, at Waurn Ponds and the waterfront.

Mr Northey urged university students to be alert and ensure their vehicles were adequately insured as classes resumed this month during a peak car collision period.

New RACV Insurance claims data for the past five financial years revealed that March and May recorded the highest number of vehicle collisions.

Mr Northey said that Geelong, along with Melbourne, Boroondara, Monash, Banyule and Whitehorse had consistently been among the most collision-prone municipalities during that time.

He said the figures highlighted that most accidents happened after noon, peaking between 4pm and 5pm.

“Young drivers are most at risk as soon as they obtain a probationary licence,” Mr Northey said.

“In the first year of driving, their risk of crashing is three times higher than an experienced driver.”

To ensure the events’ safe conduct, the roads listed below require traffic treatments to be implemented from approximately 6.30am to 11.30am on Sunday 13 March: • The Esplanade between Pier Street and Hood Road - closed to motorists.

Cycling in a clock wise direction, the event participants will travel on The Esplanade, Bluff Road, Drysdale - St Leonards Road, Portarlington - Queenscliff Road and Fisher Street. Service stations are unfairly charging up to $1.38 a litre in Geelong’s outlying towns, according to RACV fuel spokesperson Michael Case.

While suburban prices for standard unleaded hovered around the 97 cents mark, small towns along the Surf Coast and on the Bellarine Peninsula were up to 40 cents a litre dearer this week.

Drivers were slugged $1.38 at Queenscliff, $1.37 at Anglesea and $1.20 at Leopold.

Mr Case said the wide variation in regional fuel prices was unjustifiable.

“Especially if service stations are in one location or nearby, there’s no reason for that wide a gap.”

Mr Case said the gaps between high and low prices in the Geelong region were even wider than other regional centres that the RACV was monitoring.

Motorists in smaller centres were often stuck paying higher prices because of a lack of competition, he said.

“Those that don’t travel out of the town are

stuck with it. If motorists do travel they should buy fuel at stations where it’s much cheaper.

“Send a message to those service stations ... by supporting those keeping their prices down.”

Mr Case said motorists could monitor fuel prices at racv.com.au.

Federal Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson said the behaviour of petrol retailers that were gouging motorists in regional areas was “simply not good enough”.

She singled out Woolworths, Coles and BP as “blatantly anti-competitive”.

“That’s why our government needs to introduce an effects test, as recommended by the Harper Review, to better protect small businesses.

“Woolworths and Coles, in particular, have demonstrated on numerous occasions that when it comes to playing fair they can’t be trusted.

“I’ve met with Treasurer Scott Morrison about these issues and made him aware of my deep concerns.

“I’m absolutely determined to stand up for fairer prices in regional communities.”

NEW HELP: An Autism Partnership Australia class for children.

Skills program eases kids into class

By ALANA MITCHELSON Autistic children will have more therapy options with additional services to be offered in Geelong next month.

School readiness programs, social skills groups and early intensive behavioural intervention (EIBI) are among school services that Autism Partnership Australia plans to launch by 11 April.

The organisation’s facility in Bellerine Street, Geelong, is being refurbished with rooms to mimic different environments, particularly a classroom setting and specialist rooms with different teachers, such as art classes.

An outdoor area is another major feature of the expansion, creating more opportunities for play spaces such as a garden area, vegetable patch, sand pit, climbing equipment and a cubby house.

These new spaces will help children learn how to transition from outdoor play time to an indoor classroom setting when the bell rings, and from mat time to time spent at a desk.

Autism Partnership Australia managing director Shannon Eeles said research showed that EIBI was the most evidence-based approach with each autistic child requiring at least 20 hours of therapy a week.

EIBI involved an individualised approach that

breaks down skills and behaviours to ease the learning process, Ms Eeles said.

“We’re the only service provider that offers EIBI in Geelong,” she said.

“In the past we’ve had families travelling all the way up to Melbourne to access services because there are more options.

“We want families in Geelong to have the same opportunities and a greater choice of services for their children.

“In Melbourne we’ve just introduced a new program called Little School this term which has shown just how quickly kids can learn when they’re given the opportunity to practice over and over again rather than trying to teach them when they’re older in a real school environment.

“Depending on the need in Geelong, we’d be hoping to introduce Little School in Geelong in the future.”

The facility would cater for up to 15 children for EIBI, 12 for the school readiness program and a larger number for social skills groups, Ms Eeles said.

The organisation expected its Geelong staffing to more than double in time for the launch.

Latest NDIA figures show that Geelong has more than 300 autistic children aged under five.

Roger Bramham has launched his new free app, Emot It, the first messaging application to use colours to express the tone of texts and also the first of its kind to enable scheduling of messages.

He hit on the idea about four years ago after a misunderstanding with his son over a text message.

“Eighty per cent of texts are misinterpreted,“ Mr Bramham explained.

“I received a message from my son while on a holiday and replied to him in a sarcastic manner but I didn’t realise he’d interpret it as being fact.

“This caused a bit of a family issue. I got the nastiest reply and he wouldn’t answer his phone for some time.

“I’m a 56-year-old plumber and probably the last person you would think to develop an app like this. My kids believe I’m computer-and-smartphone-illiterate but miracles do occur and if you do get an idea that you believe may be successful you have to go for it."

Mr Bramham said a Key and Peele comedy ski called Text Message Confusion higlighted “exactly what the app solves".

As a primary school teacher in the ’80s Mr Bramham would ask students to write stories, with words in different colours to express feelings.

Emot It uses 10 colours to reflect tones and feelings including sarcasm, frustration, jealousy, excitement, joking, disappointment and love.

Users type a message and highlight the text they wish to colour, conveying an emotion.

Mr Bramham said message scheduling was another unique Emot It feature that was unavailable from competitors WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.

‘400 jobs, $34m’ from new centre

Daily minimums in February averaged 14.9C, which was .7C above the latest 30-year normal.

However, maximums averaged 25C, which was .2C below the 30-year figure.

The hottest day was 23 February when a maximum of 42C was recorded. The month’s warmest overnight minimum was 21.4C the following day.

Neither was a record but helped deliver the month’s above-normal temperature result.

Geelong’s summer of 2015/2016 finished with a mean temperature of 20.2C compared to the normal 18.9C. The result was mostly due to high temperatures in December.

Indications are that autumn overall will be wetter and warmer than normal but March still appears to be relatively warm and dry, in the Bureau of Meteorology’s predictions at least, until an

existing El Nino dies away completely.

February was disastrous for rain across the Geelong district but around the monthly average for most of the Otways.

Most areas within 20km to 30km of the urban area recorded only between 6mm and 10mm, which was about a quarter of the 30-year average.

Some places, such as Bacchus Marsh, Balliang East, the You Yangs and Werribee South, received only 2mm to 3mm for the whole period.

As a result, the totals for summer were also poor, despite a respite in January, with Geelong receiving about 20 per cent less rainfall than normal.

A high-tech manufacturing centre will bring hundreds of jobs and wages worth $34 million a year to Geelong, Deakin University has announced.

ManuFutures would create 100 “direct” jobs and another 300 in construction at Waurn Ponds, Deakin said.

The $13 million facility would “lead innovation to support the future of advanced manufacturing in regional Australia”.

Deakin described ManuFutures as a “hub for start-up and established businesses” that would add $220 million to Victoria’s economy annually.

Businesses “striving to harness their competitive advantage” would use the centre to combine their capabilities with the university’s “creative imagination, industry-focused research strategies and smart business models”.

ManuFutures could accommodate up to 15 companies at a time, said Deakin vice-chancellor Jane den Hollander.

She welcomed a State Government commitment this week of $3 million to develop the centre at Deakin’s Waurn Ponds Campus.

ManuFutures would allow businesses to collaborate on product development with leading research centres, Professor den Hollander said.

“Typically, great Australian inventions are refined and monetised overseas but, in order to compete through a strong economy, Australia must link high technology innovation to new ideas and do so quickly and competitively.”

Industry and Regional Development Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said ManuFutures would “foster and attract a highly skilled, knowledge-centric workforce” in Geelong.

“Geelong has a strong history in manufacturing and it’s critical that we harness this expertise and develop innovative, high value manufacturing capabilities to secure the high-tech jobs of tomorrow,” she said.

The project Dimension Data Systems was working on with Deakin would enhance security in sectors such as public transport, water, health care and financial services, said the company’s Duncan Brown.

“This is all about keeping Victoria the most liveable place in the world and, above all, creating jobs of the future for Victorians.”

Tech lends a helping hand The 3D printing revolution is providing innovative solutions for disabled people in the Barwon region.

Local human services organisation Karingal has teamed up with assistive technology group AbilityMate to make products helping people become more independent.

The two organisations held an innovation session last month in which people with disabilities could custom-design solutions to overcome everyday issues.

Rick Searle, one of six people at the innovation session, had a toggle created for his wheelchair so he could control it safely himself for the first time.

Even something as simple as using a straw to get a drink proved frustrating for Eliza Charters because it kept moving.

A chat with AbilityMate led to the3D printing of a holder as well as an enlarged button for her staff call bell.

“When I used a straw, it turned around every time because it kept moving,” she said.

“I had a paperclip, but it wasn’t stable. Then I came here and I got (the holder) made.

“You can’t get straw holders like this anywhere, but now I have one. The straw doesn’t move around anymore.”

The two organisations met at an Australianfirst workshop held at the National Disability Insurance Scheme New World Conference in October, where AbilityMate won awards for its affordable assistive technology products.

Karingal Accommodation Support manager Kristy Simmonds said the session aligned with the NDIS Assistive Technology Strategy by helping people to create solutions with the use of technology and 3D printers, providing more independence for the person.

“This will ultimately lead to a more inclusive community where people with a disability will reach their potential,” Kristy said.

“Karingal will continue to develop its innovation program in a bid to improve customer service, deliver technology solutions and create a point of difference for clients.”

Fire agencies ‘in the clear’ An official report has cleared firefighting agencies over the destructive Wye River Christmas Day fire.

The Inspector General for Emergency Management report said a lightning strike on 19 December sparked the fire before it jumped containment lines despite backburning operations, destroying 116 houses at Wye River and Separation Creek.

But the report criticised some management of the fire.

Date and time markers for some incident and planning documentation were inconsistent or absent, the report said.

The inspector also found “discrepancies” between the records of the numbers of firefighting resources applied to the fire.

“This situation has the potential to impact both firefighter safety and the effective utilisation of available resources,” the report said.

Other records including mapping were either undocumented or poorly kept, the report said.

However, the report found that the issues did not negatively affect the firefighting efforts but had potential to become an issue in future emergencies.

The fire could have had its classification elevated to level three earlier because of its complex nature and the difficulty of the terrain, the report said.

State Government said it would accept all the report’s recommendations.

Emergency Services Minister Jane Garrett said the fact nobody died during the 34-day firefight was testament to emergency services workers.

“This report is another step in the continuous improvement of how agencies work together to respond to emergencies in Victoria,” Ms Garrett said.

Back to future of Geelong We really want job agencies with integrity, not those that fail to deliver what they promise despite being paid from the public purse.

Privatisation has not been all good.

There has been much development in Geelong yet many of the employees come from out of town.

We cannot blame people who need jobs coming here to work, particularly if out-of-town developers continually use the same workforce.

We need technical school skills again; not everyone is a likely university graduate.

When the public owned services we had apprenticeships offered. This is where the problem lies.

Information technology people are a different kind yet many of them graduate and work at an ice cream parlour et al.

With all the offshore jobs and most call centres staffed from overseas, what is there to offer us here? We need to come up with some back-tothe-future ideas.

Once we had woollen mills, mega shipping, a mercantile town. What is the name for us now, how do we describe Geelong?

Surely not as a university town with a football team!

Last Friday’s game was good. Having big games in Geelong, like Collingwood, brings the fans out.

If we can’t have big matches down here during the season then why not have them in the preseason? What about Hawthorn coming to play a game down here?

I hope the football club considers this so we can see big games down here before the start of each season.

As a proud Australian, my dearest wish was to leave the workforce as a self-funded retiree.

An around-the-world cruise, a caravan perhaps, a decent vehicle to tow it, being able to travel to see my children within Australia and overseas; the future sounded good.

Sadly, and just as the best laid plans are wellknown to go astray, I found myself unexpectedly single at 58.

With very few assets and no superannuation from assisting my husband with his job, I realised I would have to provide for my own old age.

Getting a job was impossible. I had plenty of experience but, although it wasn’t spelled out, I was considered too old.

Living on the dole, at the cost of my fellow Australians, or starting a small business of my own seemed the only ways I could go. I opted for the latter, saved money and, when I had enough, I bought a small investment property.

A young male was recently seen being escorted out of a local supermarket by staff.

His offence: knocking off a bottle of whisky, not once but twice, within an hour or so, from the same supermarket Just how many retailers in and around Geelong have he and his mates stolen from and over what period?

The problem is that most retailers won’t go through the hassle of charging people like him, knowing that the penalty will only be a smack on the back of his hand.

The police also have higher priorities than following up reports of such petty thefts.

He’ll be back again; so much for the interest of shareholders and the buying public who bear the cost of theft via higher prices.

Insane activists desperate for death When the Howard government was voted out in 2007 offshore detention centres were empty, the boats had stopped and we were taking all our refugees from UNHCR centres and other approved sources.

But “refugee” activists were enraged by our government controlling refugee immigration.

They agitated for a more humane and compassionate policy and Kevin Rudd gave it to them by dismantling our border-protection policy.

The result was entirely predictable: first a trickle and then an avalanche of boats with 50,000 people rich enough to pay for transport to Indonesia.

Instead of registering with the UNHCR and waiting for assessment, they paid boat smugglers for passage to Australia - and 1200 drowned.

It is impossible to determine how many of the 50,000 were genuine refugees. Our system simply required them to tell a story without proof.

When first questioned by immigration officials, only about 60 per cent were initially accepted as refugees. However, a review and subsequent coaching by advocates and lawyers magically lifted acceptances to 90 per cent!

Can you imagine how devastated genuine refugees stuck for years in UNHCR camps without money or resources would have felt watching this passing parade of cashed up opportunists?

Perhaps the most bizarre aspect is that the so called “refugee” activists are desperate for our border protection to be dismantled again and for the boats to start coming again.

Inevitably the drownings and total immigration chaos will follow.

Time to trump our pollies We may soon have a double-dissolution election to bar low-polling candidates from entering the senate.

But it still won’t give us true democracy.

Democracy means ‘government by people’.

Therefore, everyone should have a say on everything that affects their lives.

However, the government decides for us so many issues that the majority does not favour.

This is because we now have ‘representative democracy’ which would be alright if our elected representatives consulted us before making decisions.

Modern technology could provide that.

We only vote every four years but do not vote on issues. Once elected our representatives can do whatever they like - shades of dictatorship.

Voters need to speak up on vital issues to let their local politicians know they will not accept situations and decisions they don’t want and will vote accordingly at the next election.

Politicians should be told they are not there to ride their own hobby horses but to be the servants of their electors.

Brennan, Bryce and Austin Mileto say they pride themselves on putting on a spectacular show, with two- hour long gigs not uncommon.

Brennan takes on the persona of ’B Monroe’, Bryce becomes ’Lips’ and Austin is ’Mr Fox’.

The trio recently moved to Melbourne from Collie, Western Australia with a steady stream of gigs now on their schedule.

They promise “energetic live performances have people of all ages up on their feet, screaming for more.

“Prepare to be shocked with outrageous dance moves, crazy solos, sensational bass lines and lots of kick ass stage effects that will blow your mind.”

Sister’s Doll says it aims to take over any audience with the theatrical power of its performance.

Starting in a back shed like so many, Sister’s Doll won several band competitions, were invited to playing at festivals, put on their own shows and culminated with a tour of the US. Sister’s Doll runs the full glam gamut, costumes, pyrotechnics, sexy dancing girls, smoke machines, lasers and confetti bombs.

Sister’s Doll will kick off the Motor City Music Festival as part of the Glam and Girls Friday night rock line-up on 11 March.

Relaxed vibe at Adam Harvey’s bar

By ALANA MITCHELSON After recording a new album at his bar during a house party, country singer Adam Harvey will bring the atmosphere of his home-based sing-alongs to fans in Geelong.

The Leopold-born-and-bred musician said hometown shows were one of the few times he became nervous.

“It’s always nice to catch up with all my friends and family who still live here," Harvey said.

“It brings back a lot of memories of being a young bloke, playing with my band in the garage at home and later playing the Geelong live music scene."

With eight Golden Guitars to his name, Harvey said the most special moment of his career so far was playing at the Grand Ol Opry in Nashville.

His new album, Harvey’s Bar... The Backyard Sessions, was entirely recorded around his home barstool in the company of family, neighbours and best mates.

The idea came to mind after noticing many Facebook fans showed interest in spending night at his house parties and joining in on sing-a-longs at the bar.

“I thought if we recorded the album during a party at home, it’d give fans a taste of what it’s all about,” Harvey said.

“We just invited all the local yobbos, and the neighbours, that’s the Aussie way. I gave them a bit of a lecture that there couldn’t be any bad language or anything once the record button was on.

“Everyone was pretty well-behaved and it gave the tracks a really raw, relaxed vibe.

“We’ve taken the bar concept a step further for the live shows where we’ve got a replica of my bar that’s rebuilt on stage with a backdrop of my home.

“Even my chihuahua can be heard at the end of the track Yeah I Like Beer. I’m not sure if he

The jolly 41-year-old said practical jokes on tour were aplenty.

Among his best pranks, Harvey recalled having thrown a stink bomb at the feet of Beccy Cole as she sang a heartfelt ballad on stage.

“She was singing this beautiful solo, Poster Girl, and she just had tears coming down and mascara

running down her face. She had people come up to her after the show, saying it was the most emotional performance they’d seen her do but people in the front row were probably just wondering what that horrible smell was,” he laughed.

“Even my wife got in on the gag one time. I’d packed my bag for a trip overseas but when I got off the plane, I opened up my suitcase and found that she’d taken out all of my underwear and replaced it with all of her underwear.”

Harvey said his tour shows would be interactive and not limited to the usual setlist.

“I’ll be taking requests from the audience, so we’ll be kept on our toes the whole night,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to a fun night. There’s a great deal of doom and gloom in the world. I like to think of my shows as an escape from all of that for a couple of hours.”

The 208 range hasn’t exactly set Australian sales charts on fire but has been a fine return to form for the French manufacturer after a couple of duffers.

Its top-of-the-range GTi has, however, got plenty of attention for the most convincing attempt to reboot the beloved 205 GTi. Not everyone wants or can afford that rangetopper, however, but with its excellent ride and handling on offer, Peugeot has sent the 208 Allure to finishing school to create the GT Line.

While the 208 range starts at $15,990 with a five-speed manual 60kW Access, the GT-Line weighs in at a GTi-troubling $27,490 (the GTi is $29,990).

The GTi has more power and torque but is a six-speed manual only and will, of course, cost more to run.

The price is almost the same as its French rival Renault’s Clio GT. For this level of spend you get Peugeot’s seveninch screen powering a six-speaker stereo, front and rear parking sensors, auto-parking, dualzone climate control, power windows and folding mirrors, leather steering wheel and handbrake, rear parking sensors, central locking, cruise control with braking function, cloth trim and 16-inch alloy wheels.

Metallic paint is a $990 option and there’s the $1050 option of textured matte paint which Peugeot says is low-maintenance.

The optional Active City Brake feature at $500 also includes a reversing camera which is $300 on its own.

The GT Line, as the name suggests, is well on its way to looking like a GTi with 16-inch alloys, a lower stance and the tell-tale bodykit and LED daytime running lights.

The grille is flecked with red flashes for an “equaliser” effect and there’s various chrome and red bits to sort the GT from the lower models.

The windscreen is gigantic, soaring up to your forehead (and further if you have the panoramic roof), with the high ceiling delivering a ton of headroom.

Inside space is impressive for such a small car with a decent-sized boot at 311 litres.

The sportier more heavily bolstered seats are still very comfortable with a wide range of adjustment to help you get comfortable behind the i-Cockpit, which consists of high dials and low steering wheel.

As in the 308, the steering wheel is very small indeed so you can see those dials but is off-putting to some. It takes a while to get the position right.

The rear seats are comfortable enough, but the rear seat is tight for leg, knee and shoulder room.

Storage is limited with a pair of small cupholders up front and a bin hidden underneath the rather inconveniently-sited central armrest.

The seven-inch screen is bright and clear but is still slow to respond to your inputs and isn’t exactly the last word in ease-of-use or up-to-the minute design.

The screen takes care of not only sat-nav and stereo but also the full trip computer and climate control.

There’s a lot going on there and it would be fine if the screen wasn’t so slow to respond to your fingers.

The sat-nav is pretty good if not highly-detailed or high resolution and the stereo, once you’ve worked it out, delivers good sound and works more than happily with your Bluetooth or USB-connected phone.

The GT-Line shares the Puretech 1.2 litre turbocharged three cylinder with the Active and Allure.

The triple pumps out 81kW and 205Nm (why not go for 208? Just for laughs?), the stop-start helping with a combined claimed fuel-consumption of 4.5 litres per 100km which is, well, unlikely to be matched seeing we got 8.2 L/100km, admittedly in an especially sticky week in a Sydney summer.

The GT-Line reaches 0-100km/h in a leisurely 10.9 seconds, the six-speed transmission’s shifts fast and smooth.

A standard 208 is close to, if not the benchmark for ride and handling in its class.

The standard GTi is the best riding hot hatch in the world even if it doesn’t have that ultimate handling ability, which few of its owners will ever use, of its Renault, Ford and VW rivals.

The GT Line chassis falls in the middle of the standard and GTi tunes and is all the better for it.

The tauter chassis further sharpens the already-excellent steering and the fast-responding throttle and transmission make the 208 feel a lot more sprightly than its 0-100km/h figures suggests.

The three-cylinder’s growl is as enjoyable as ever and is a good soundtrack to your hard work if you’ve pointed the car down the inevitable winding road.

Geelong Cricket Club is well placed to finish its season on the perfect note after posting a mammoth 8/337 against Kingston Hawthorn last Saturday.

After winning the toss, all the top order got starts, but at 6/199, the job wasn’t done yet.

However, the middle order stood firm with half centuries to Tyler Larkin (52), Liam Buchanan (79) and Corey Ogle (58), turning a possible collapse into a dominant performance.

All the Cats bowlers will be looking to bag a few wickets tomorrow and finish their season with a deserved victory.

It’s finals time in the Geelong Cricket Association, with some mouth-watering games scheduled in the first week.

The most interesting game will be the between top placed East Belmont and sixth placed St Josephs.

While the Lions have steadily gone about their business all season, a loss to Lara last week could see a few sides thinking there is a chink or two in their impressive armour.

The Joeys, on the other hand, were awful before Christmas causing many to write them off, but some superb form since then has them right back in the mix.

East will look to not only assert their dominance in this one, but also would love to knock out one of their main dangers for the flag.

In the two other games, South Barwon will play local rival Grovedale, while two of the quiet achievers in Lara and Geelong City will battle it out.

East Belmont v St Josephs, South Barwon v Grovedale, Geelong City v Lara In division two, Bell Park pulled off a miracle outright win in their final game of the season against Marshall to sensationally knock Modewarre out of the finals.

In the end they finished one point clear in sixth spot and have earned the right to play Highton which also won outright, ironically against Modewarre.

While Bell Park will be on a high having made the finals, they’ll need to lift at least one if not two more gears if they are to knock off Highton which has been very consistent all year.

The other games will see St Albans Breakwater play fierce rival Thomson while reigning premier Marshall will play St Peters. Both of these games will go down to the wire.

Highton v Bell Park, St Albans Breakwater v Thomson, Marshall v St Peters.

And in division three, top side Shelford will take on probably the side with the most finals experience in the division when it plays Teesdale.

Shelford has answered every challenge so far but Teesdale will know it has nothing to lose and all the pressure will be on the Bullants.

Corio will play Little River, both sides having enjoyed much improved seasons, while Bannockburn and Guild St Marys will take the field in the other game.

Bannockburn has been very good all year while Guild St Marys’ form has been patchy, but it remains a dangerous proposition.

Corio Bay held a wide variety of species over the past week.

Anglers who cast soft plastics while drifting the spoil grounds boated pinkie snapper to 50cm, flathead around the same size and pike to almost 80cm.

The rocks at St Helens were a popular land-based option.

Flathead and pinkies were the main captures although one lucky angler hooked into a kingfish just over legal size.

Indented Head’s reefs fished well for squid to 800g on artificial jigs.

Barry Wood fished off Indented Head on Monday morning, boating numerous flathead to 35cm and some mackerel.

The mouth of Swan Bay held lots of squid and whiting along with gummy shark taken in the evenings on baits such as squid and trevally fillets.

Tackleworld Geelong’s Adam Van Der Luht was surprised to catch a 50cm break while casting soft plastics at Queenscliff on Sunday.

After a short but intense fight, he banked the big bream, took some photos and released it in excellent health.

Silver trevally held in Queenscliff Harbour’s main channel, with anglers catching fish to 40cm on bait and lure around tide changes.

Offshore from Torquay last Monday afternoon Jevvy Carr boated a 14kg bronze whaler shark off Torquay on Monday afternoon, which was lucky given he was using monofilament line.

Jevvy also encountered large numbers of slimy mackerel in the vicinity of the shark.

Rici Hedditch and daughter Chloe fished off Breamlea in 20m on Sunday morning, with the youngster boating a gummy shark of 17kg on a 6kg set-up and a fresh squid bait. Those who spun the Surf Coast’s beaches and rock platforms caught Australian salmon.

The platforms between Lorne and Apollo Bay were best, producing fish of 2kg.

The Western District again hosted exciting action on kingfish and tuna taking.

Portland produced southern bluefin tuna to 50kg and most averaging 15kg to 20kg.

Port Fairy had consistent action on kingies and tuna around Lady Julia Percy Island. On the freshwater side of things, Wurdee Boluc Reservoir produced redfin and rainbow trout on Strike Pro Bob N Spoons cast around the weed beds at first or last light. Mudeyes fished under floats also worked well on rainbows to 1kg.

Lake Bullen Merri began firing up, with Chinook salmon and rainbow trout falling to lures trolled deep around bait schools located on depth sounders. Next week anglers should try Corio Bay for a variety of species on the chew while Queenscliff will be worth fishing for whiting on the grass beds or kingfish and salmon in the Rip. Lake Bullen Merri should produce Chinook salmon, while a drive down to Portland or Port Fairy should be worthwhile for anglers seeking quality pelagic fish.

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN The Cats go up country in their second NAB challenge hit out taking on Essendon at Shepparton’s Deakin Reserve tomorrow afternoon.

Geelong coaching staff promised to keep the line-up settled but veterans Jimmy Bartel and Tom Lonergan will be among the notable inclusions. Lonergan should be able to help recruit Lachie Henderson settle some nerves and midfielder Josh Caddy will be keen to get some run into his legs.

There will be one forced change with promising mature age recruit Sam Menegola facing a layoff after suffering a knee injury against the Magpies. Defensive assistant coach Matthew Scarlett said the Cats would field a strong team.

“With so many new players into the team it’s important they spend some time playing together,” Scarlett said.

He said the coaching group was hoping the chemistry would form quickly.

“We need it really quick because we’ve got a tough start to the year so we’re hoping it’s really early.

“The longer you play with people, it becomes instinct and you know how they go about it.”

Midfield gun Patty Dangerfield will suit up for his second hit out with only skipper Joel Selwood and bother Scott missing from what Geelong hopes will become the leading midfield in the league.

Defence was high on Scarlett’s agenda and he

admitted he was getting annoyed at the avalanche of Collingwood goals in the third quarter of Geelong’s first NAB Challenge.

“I got pretty angry in the third quarter, especially when that ninth goal went through,” Scarlett said.

“It was pretty tough sitting in the box in that third quarter.

“We didn’t change a helluva lot in the box. We sort of let the players try and figure it out themselves.

“There are certainly things we’ll do a bit different next time we play Collingwood.

“There are a couple of little things we’ll tinker with this week and I’m really confident we can fix that up.”

Scarlett welcomed the possibility of coming up against former Geelong players now with Essendon. The Bombers have James Kelly and Mathew Stokes as top-up players as well as ex-Cat Jonathan Simpkin who went to Hawthorn, and Mitch Brown, picked up by Essendon after impressing in the VFL. “I hope they play, it’s pretty funny and good fun for the boys. I’m not sure they (Kelly and Stokes) are going to be ready. I’m not sure how much training they have done but I hope they are.”

Scarlett said Essendon had played strong free flowing football in its last game against Carlton.

“They have a lot of young players in the team trying to forge an AFL career and they were pretty desperate.”

Warriors elbow for promotion space

By JOSIP ZILIC North Geelong Warriors take on one of the NPL’s A-League sides in Melbourne City this Saturday at La Trobe Uni Fields for an early season test of character between two sides that are looking to challenge for promotion spots.

Melbourne City boasts A-League players on the periphery looking for John Van’t Schip’s attention in the upcoming A-League finals campaign.

City come off a disappointing 1-1 draw with Whittlesea Ranges where City held the lead and controlled proceedings for the majority of the match only to allow a 10 man Whittlesea team in for a point in the last minute.

The Melburnians will be revved up for a good showing in their first home match against a Warriors side which has shown that it can find the right click but hasn’t been able to get off to vibrant starts in its two matches to date.

North Geelong came away from its first home match against Werribee with a 2-0 win where Werribee had North Geelong on the ropes early on and should have capitalised twice in the first five minutes after breaking the midfield lines of Michael Simms and Vito Cichello with ease.

Werribee forward Bobby Vidanovksi and midfielder Dom Marafioti both had gilt-edge chances sail wide of the post.

North Geelong looked slow out of the blocks and was unable to maintain longer patches of possession to build its tempo until just after the break when coach Micky Colina brought in Michael Anderson who brought his dynamism to the fore,

This lifted the Warriors and was the impetus to swing the contest in their favour.

After a series of attacks North won a corner on 60 minutes, superbly taken by left winger Rudi Saglam, finding the head of Matt Thorne at the front post for the opener.

North Geelong then controlled proceedings and went further ahead courtesy of Michael Anderson who latched onto a through ball, breaking the defensive line of Werribee and neatly finishing past the oncoming Anthony Saric.

Colina was a relieved coach in the end.

“We were slow to start, but overall we’re satisfied that the team was able to lift when it was needed,” he said.
