By ANEEKA SIMONIS A MAJOR road duplication project identified for one of Pakenham’s busiest thoroughfares is thought to be holding up plans for large-scale accommodation in town.

VicRoads has confirmed the need to widen the entire section of Racecourse Road, from Bald Hill Road to the Princes Highway, to four lanes to cater for planned urban development in the Pakenham growth area.

However, the estimated start time for the road project has been kept under close wraps with the Gazette’s first unsuccessful query about proposed duplication plans dating back to October 2014.

The unfunded proposal is believed to be stalling the 60room motel planned for land neighbouring Cardinia Club on Racecourse Road.

VicRoads acting director of Transport and Planning Metro East Savoula Lidis said they were currently reviewing the council-forwarded planning permit for the proposed development.

“We will review this application and inform council of our position including any planning permit conditions that are appropriate for this development,” she said of the permit submitted to VicRoads on Monday 22 February.

The permit submitted to council by Pakenham Racing Club seeks to subdivide land at 71 and 77 Racecourse Road in Pakenham in addition to creat-

ing and altering access to a road.

Council’s co-ordinator for Economic Development Andrew Pomeroy last year told the Gazette accommodation services in the region “have been lacking for some time”, citing a need for additional conference facilities to enhance the area’s attractiveness for business conferences.

Council is not due to make a decision on the permit conditions before Friday 11 March.

VicRoads has also taken issue with turning lanes on the busy road, according to Ms Lidis.

“We have also held early discussions about turning lanes with the owner of the land on the west side of Racecourse Road next to the Cardinia Club, which will be considered,” she said.

In recent weeks, political campaign Fix the Bald Hill Road roundabout was created with the strong backing of Bass MP Brian Paynter.

Over 16,000 motorists are estimated to use the roundabout each day, causing significant delays along the single-lane road.

He flagged the roundabout upgrade as “urgent”.

Ms Lidis said, “We have recently commenced more detailed investigations into options to address traffic issues at the Bald Hill Road intersection.”

“Any improvement proposals along Racecourse Road will be considered for funding in a future program along with other state-wide priorities.”

From 6pm on Friday night until noon on Saturday, over 800 registered walkers circled the oval to raise funds and support for the Cancer Council.

Among the teams was the Cancer Busting Fairies, who this year had a group of around 35 people. Kerry Holland, their captain for the past several years, was recently diagnosed with leukaemia and the team carried around a “mini Kerry” doll attached to a backpack with them throughout the night.

Member Daniel McCasker said the fairies sold lollybags and held a raffle to boost funds, and that this year’s relay had been a particularly important one.

“Kerry’s fighting a battle at the moment, so she couldn’t be here, but she’s with us in spirit,” he said.

“She wears pink hair every year, so the doll is wearing pink for her this year.”

At the closing ceremony, held at 11.30am on Saturday morning, Cardinia Relay for Life committee chairperson John Henzen announced that an amazing $97,262 had been raised, with more still to be counted.

He told the Pakenham News that the incredible atmosphere and generosity of all who donated made this year’s relay the “best one ever.”

“We were hoping for about 800 people, but the official number is looking closer to 1000, and that’s without the people that came to watch,” he said.

“I think it was a fantastic night. Feedback has been positive from all the participants.”

By ANEEKA SIMONIS A WOMAN up on multiple attempted aggravated burglary charges was allegedly caught with drugs of dependence at the time of her arrest in Pakenham last week.

The 43-year-old woman, of no fixed address, was picked up by police about 15 minutes after allegedly attempting to commit her last aggravated burglary in Pakenham.

Police alleged the woman attempted to break her way into two homes located in Charles Street and Acacia Court in Pakenham earlier that morning but was frightened off by residents who went on to raise the alarm to police.

The woman was arrested by responding officers in Main Street, Pakenham at 7.30am on Friday 26 February, minutes after victim reports were called through to police.

On both occasions, the woman failed to enter the homes or steal anything.

However, police have alleged they found her wearing items of stolen jewellery and in possession of a credit card stolen from Dandenong more than a fortnight earlier.

It was alleged she had used it at various outlets since stealing it on Wednesday 10 February.

Police reported she also had a quantity of valium on her at the time, but could not confirm if the drug was being trafficked by the woman.

She was remanded in police custody and charged with a range of offences later that night.

She is due to appear at the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 3 March.

IN April of 2014, Kathy Burgstahler’s life changed for the better.

The Lakeside resident decided to sign up to the Premier’s Active April - a State Government initiative encouraging Victorians to lead more active lives.

Throughout the month, Kathy took advantage of free YMCA passes, activewear discounts, a free tennis lesson and free gym court hire, and says she ended the month feeling significantly healthier.

“I made time to exercise every single day, and it was a change that I found continued throughout the rest of the year,” she said.

“The biggest difference I’ve noticed is a better work-life balance. When you’re working you often put yourself on the backburner.”

Active April participants register online and log their progress through an activity tracker. The aim is to spend 30 minutes of each day engaged in physical activity.

Kathy found the program to be so beneficial that she participated again last year and has already registered for the 2016 challenge.

“My husband now does it too and I’ve found that he’s very competitive, so it’s a competition between the two of us,” she said.

“I’d never ridden a bike, but because of Active April we took a trip to Canberra, hired bikes and cycled around Lake Burley Griffin.”

Upon registration, participants receive 10 free passes to a participating YMCA, 15 per cent off at Sportsmart, one free hour of tennis court hire at Melbourne Park or Albert Reserve, one free Cardio Tennis session, a two-for-one ticket to the Melbourne Aquarium and the chance to win major prizes.

Hilda is part of the Picasso Cows program, a Dairy Australia classroom initiative which aims to help kids discover the health and nutritional benefits of dairy foods.

Shadow Minister for Community Safety, Corrections and Police Edward O’Donohue introduced a Private Member’s Bill into the Legislative Council on Wednesday 24 February.

“Families have a right to bury their loved ones and they should decide the resting place, not convicted killers,” he said.

“The Liberal Nationals Coalition believes that the rights of victims and their loved ones should be at the heart of the justice system and that criminals should be held to account for their crimes.”

The early parole conditions also relate to convicted killers withholding other forms of critical information in a murder or homicide case.

THE daughter of a rape, murder victim has put her full support behind a bold new Coalition Bill taking the power away from convicted killers.

Last week, the State Opposition unveiled proposed new laws that would prevent convicted killers from receiving parole if they refuse to reveal the location of the body of the victims.

Cranbourne woman Janine Greening heads the Victoria Homicide Victims Support Group’s Forget Me Not Foundation - set on supporting those left behind in murder, homicide and missing persons’ cases.

Some were adults when they went missing, others thought to have vanished due to foul play were children - but all leave behind a web of tragically torn friends and family left forever wondering.

“I can only imagine what a nightmare that would be. Every one of us would like to have the body of our loved one to put them to rest in a place we know,” Ms Greening said.

“These people are all stuck at that point in time when their loved one last went out the door.

“It’s horrific to think killers can have that power over them.”

Ms Greening’s mother, Marie Greening Zidan, 70, was sexually assaulted and killed by two minors in her Seaford home in 2000.

Her intellectually disabled son cowered in terror in the corner of the room as the killers, then aged 15 and 16, took the great-grandmother’s life.

Ms Greening was down the street as the horror unfolded.

Clean up your act ALMOST every visitor to Australia is greatly impressed by the cleanliness of our cities.

Littering is strictly prohibited, household rubbish is placed in big garbage bins that are emptied within 24 hours.

But, unfortunately, all these glamorous aspects are gradually disappearing in some of our cities.

In the City of Casey, for example, the way in which hard waste is collected is very bad.

Residents are encouraged to leave their hard rubbish for days outside on nature strips before collection. As everybody knows the environment has become a daily topic of conversation worldwide and schoolchildren are taught about the protection of the environment and the fight against pollution.

According to council, though, “all hard rubbish should be placed out for collection

by Sunday night on the weekend before your scheduled collection week”.

In reality, however, the ugly sights on the nature strips remain for at least three weeks before collection. One may wonder why Casey council doesn’t follow the good example of some other councils in Victoria where residents of a pre-designated area or ward are asked to put their hard rubbish out for collection within 24 or 48 hours.

Undoubtedly, it would be wise for Casey council to review its policy regarding hard rubbish collection in order to spare all residents of such a permanent eyesore.

Breaking boundaries THE Victorian Electoral Commission is currently conducting a review of the electoral boundaries for the City of Casey.

Under their plan, 9214 voters will be moved out of the wards that they are currently in.

I have made a submission to the VEC detailing how the number of voters affected can be almost halved and will be speaking about it at the public hearing at 6.30pm on Wednesday 9 March at the Old Shire Office (160 Sladen Street, Cranbourne).

The electoral boundaries need to remain relatively constant for us to be able to hold our councillors accountable.

CASEY councillor Damien Rosario was elected this year’s chairman of the Casey-Cardinia Library Corporation.

He hopes to link local schools with the online resources the libraries offer and promote community awareness.

“Schools can use these resources in classrooms for free,” he said.

“As a councillor I am facilitating conversations between school principals and the libraries.”

A MAN recently felt the wrath of Dandenong Drug Court after bringing some of his stash to the courthouse.

The man, who is on a drug treatment courtorder, arrived at court with a mints tin con-

taining drug “residue” a defence lawyer told a judge.

He realised his mistake and threw the tin in a bin outside the court prior to being screened by court security.

Unluckily for him, an alert PSO retrieved the tin and arrested the man.

DANDENONG Magistrates’ Court dock and two custody officers were not enough to restrain one highly agitated offender.

The accused’s bail application came to an abrupt halt when he barrelled through the dock’s gate, bursting into the public gallery.

Fortunately, two police officers were in the courtroom and offered immediate reinforcement.

There was some doubt over whether the accused would find the inner calm to resume his quest for bail.

TWO Cranbourne stalwarts were warmly congratulated for their long-standing service to the community last month.

Retiring couple Barbara Maggs and Tony Jenner were acknowledged by Balla Balla Ward councillor Geoff Ablett at the February council meeting.

“A huge congratulations to Barbara Maggs and Tony Jenner on their retirement from organising the Cranbourne Christmas Motorcycle toy and food run for the past 31 years, delivering to those in need in our local community,” Cr Ablett said.

“You’re both champions!”

IT EMERGED at a function this week that Casey Mayor Sam Aziz was a contestant in a 1989 English speaking contest where former weather man Rob Gell was the MC. The pair were reunited in Devon Meadows at the Australian Fresh Leaf greenhouse launch on Wednesday 2 March.

“Sam was a student then... never mind,” Rob trailed off, realising he was showing his age.

But Cr Aziz told him: “You only seem to be getting younger.”

‘Stay away’ plea A TRAINED nurse turned ice user and dealer has been urged by a court to stay away from the “Dandenong-Cranbourne area”.

Emily Smith, 21, of Cranbourne, was directed by Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 29 February to stay with family in Wonthaggi to complete her community corrections order.

It was, however, noted that she first tried ice in Wonthaggi, her home town, at the behest of her boyfriend and drug dealer.

Smith faced charges over being found by police with increasing amounts of ice while on a corrections order in the past two months.

On 10 February she fled from her Cranbourne home during a nearby “police incident” that she wasn’t involved with, the court was told.

Smith jumped neighbours’

fences and was found hiding in bushes in a nearby property. A deal bag containing six grams of meth was found on the ground nearby.

Police also seized a goldcoloured Toyota Kluger with false plates as well as its keys found on Smith.

The accused told police she had the keys for “safe keeping”, the court was told.

At 4am on 29 February, Smith was found in a car in an alley behind shops in Cranbourne.

Police seized two deal bags with a total of 12.81 grams of ice, a bottle of clear liquid, a syringe and $270 cash.

The court noted that one gram of ice had a street value of between $500 and $1000.

Smith denied knowledge of the items and was remanded to face court that day.

The accused was also inter-

cepted driving while suspended in a car with false, cancelled registration plates on South Gippsland Highway, Lynbrook, on 1 February.

Smith’s lawyer said the accused moved from Wonthaggi to Cranbourne last March and had become highly addicted.

She was trying to cut down from a daily use of 0.5 grams of ice and 20 mL of GHB, the court was told.

Smith had a “slow start” to the early stages of her correction order, the lawyer said.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted Smith’s prior offences of trafficking, drug possession, having a controlled weapon and careless driving.

He jailed Smith for seven days with release on a treatment-focused, judicially-monitored community corrections order.

Car wash burglary bid fails

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH POLICE are on the lookout for three offenders who used an angle grinder and a jemmy bar in an attempt to open a security door at a Cranbourne car wash.

Cruise Car Spa on the South Gippsland Highway in Cranbourne was targeted by thieves on Monday 1 February at 4.50am.

A female and male offender and an unknown third offender parked a silver Hyundai SUV

with false registration plates, SWP 154, before getting tools out in an attempted burglary. The third offender kept a look out while the other two grinded the door.

The security alarm was set off in the process and the three offenders made off in the SUV. The female was wearing bright pink Adidas runners at the time of the incident.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to an attempted burglary at Cruise Car Spa on the South Gippsland Highway in Cranbourne on 1 February.

Freedom for a new dad A BERWICK ice addict found with an “Aladdin’s cavern” of more than 140 stolen items at his home will be released from jail in time to witness the birth of his first child.

Yianni Poulos, 26, was arrested after a Casey CIU raid of his home on 24 November uncovered the loot, a court has heard.

It included 22 watches, 15 laptops, several phones and tablets, passports, gift cards and membership cards.

Poulos pleaded guilty on 29 February to numerous property crimes, including burglary, theft, handling stolen goods and the proceeds of crime.

The accused made “some admissions” during a police interview but claimed he’d found most of the items from hard rubbish or he’d bought them from a friend, the court heard.

Police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Tim Barlow said Poulos shared the raided house with his pregnant partner, who was a co-accused. Another co-accused had been jailed, the court heard.

Poulos and a co-offender were accused of stealing from homes, a home garage, a taxi, a Xavier College campus and a car over October and November.

The reported losses included

clothes, laptops, an in-car navigator, a Playstation 4, a wallet, passports and other personal ID. In January, he stole a custom-made surfboard from the back of a ute and pawned it to Cash Converters for $100.

On another occasion, he tried to sell jewellery stolen from a Berwick house on Facebook.

Some of the stolen items were recovered during the police raid.

Poulos also pleaded guilty to a petrol drive-off in Springvale South on 19 January; he admitted stealing the vehicle with NSW plates from Noble Park three days earlier.

Inside the car, police found several tools including a drill and air compressor. A bag of crystal meth was found in Poulos’s jocks.

Some of the crime was committed after Poulos was placed on a community corrections order on 11 November.

Poulos’s lawyer said the accused was now “clean” from his ice habit after spending the past 39 days in custody.

The court heard Poulos had had a “promising career” on a dairy farm, where he had been introduced to ice.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said the “enormous” amount of stolen property and ID had

“great meaning” to the owners and was often difficult to replace.

“The amount of property was an Aladdin’s cavern. There would be tens of thousands of dollars here.”

Mr Vandersteen said he would hand down a 60-day jail term, including time served in custody.

It meant Poulos would be released on 21 March, a month before he and his partner’s baby was due.

The judge noted Poulos’s impending fatherhood and supportive family were “protective” factors that reduced the chances of re-offending.

“If you don’t change, your son will be speaking to someone like me here in 15 years’ time.

“If that’s the road you want him to go down, keep going on your merry way.”

The judge indicated Poulos would serve a lengthy community corrections order of at least 18 months on his release, due to the inadequacy of the jail term.

“I could be giving eight to 12 months easily, including an immediate term.”

Poulos was ordered to undergo a community corrections assessment ahead of final sentencing at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 1 March.

Teal touch to morning tea

The colour teal could be seen everywhere at St John of God during the Ovarian Cancer Awareness Day held at the hospital on Wednesday 24 February.

An afternoon tea, attended by hospital caregivers and obstetrician Dr Rudy Lopes, helped spread awareness of the disease - while teal-coloured cakes and treats were available to sweettooths seeking to help fund the cause.

According to statistics, ovarian cancer kills more than 50 per cent of the almost 1500 women diagnosed with the illness each year.

‘Likeable’ but far too risky

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A MAN hobbled by illness has been declared a risk to the community after pleading guilty to his latest arson and drink-driving offences.

Murray Craw, 55, of Dandenong, who is fighting prostate cancer and type-two diabetes, wore a beanie as he pushed a wheeler into his Port Phillip Prison court link on 29 February.

He had been in custody for 82 days, facing his ninth drinkdriving offence, 13th for driving while suspended and fourth arson-related charge.

Among his recent charges was setting a dump master skip full of cardboard alight at the back of a Hampton Park servo about 3.15am on 9 December.

According to a police summary presented at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court, Craw set the blaze with a cigarette lighter, stepped back and lit a cigarette.

He then walked away.

While waiting for a bus in Tr-

aralgon West on 6 June, Craw lit a large pile of rubbish behind the bus shelter on Princes Highway.

While passing motorists reported the fire, Craw walked out from behind the shelter and boarded the 7.40am bus to Morwell.

CCTV footage on the bus showed a large fire continuing to burn as the bus drove on.

Firefighters confined the fire damage to a 1.5-metre by 0.5 metre area, without it catching the wooden and metal bus shelter or road reserve.

During a police field interview, Craw said he lit the fire because he was cold, admitting he didn’t extinguish it before he left.

On 20 September, Craw ran a red light and crashed into a pregnant driver at the corner of Princes Highway and Heatherton Road, Noble Park North.

The driver and her passenger were taken by ambulance to Dandenong Hospital for observation.

An uninjured Craw, whose licence was suspended at the time,

produced a 0.100 blood-alcohol sample at hospital more than 90 minutes later.

Craw was also charged with stealing a helmet from a parked Vespa on Flinders Street, Melbourne.

Defence lawyer Bernard Keating said Craw desired to return to his Dandenong boarding house. “He did trades in New Zealand. He’s lived the life, so it’s more the pity he finds himself in this situation.�

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said Craw was “likeable� but a risk to the community if his issues weren’t addressed. “In my opinion, you’re better on a corrections order than a parole order (when released). “From what I know of your past, drugs aren’t the issue. It’s the alcohol.�

He was ordered to undergo a community corrections assessment at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 7 March.

The victim was parked in the lot about 8.50pm on Tuesday 23 February when a black Ford Territory pulled in behind him.

This week a community information night, convened at Berwick Healthcare by the Melbourne Bipolar Network (MBN), started to address these issues. The night was organised

by Ray Farrelly, a volunteer from the Melbourne Bipolar Network, which has a support group that meets in Berwick monthly.

Moderated by Emma Higgins, a Learning and Development Consultant from Mind Australia, the inaugural Berwick information night included presentations from Psychotropic Drug Advisory Service pharmacist Christine Culhane, Grow Clinic founder and perinatal psychiatrist Adaobi Udechuku and Eastern Health Peer Support co-ordinator Paula Kelly. Bipolar disorder can be traumatic for the friends and family of those with the illness, which can result in episodes of depression and mania and induce a multitude of stresses.

Mr Farrelly said there were more than 3000 people in the City of Casey who suffered from bipolar disorder - 1500 of those reportedly undiagnosed.

“Melbourne’s got 55,000plus people with bipolar disorder and half of them are undiagnosed, so the focus on an evening like this is the undiagnosed and their families and carers,” he said.

“So we’re hoping to get the sort of people who we don’t normally see.

“If we can get them down here, it’s going to help the lousy situation.”

Ms Higgins spoke in detail about the Mind Australia Recovery College, and how healthy discussions of mental illness help break down any stigmas.

“Facilitators like me have lived experience and we’re able to have robust discussions,” she told the room.

“It’s transformational education and insight moments.

“People can be open about what they’re dealing with ... in those open conversations people can often have moments of insight - those lightbulb moments.”

Mr Farrelly, who suffers from bipolar, has worked in the mental health sector for more than decade and is passionate about helping others through education and discussion.

“I had a lot of people help me on my journey, and I started getting involved in the mental health sector,” he said.

“My motivation is to help people.”

The Melbourne Bipolar Network is a non-profit charity set up in 2008 and run by volunteers, which organises a support group at Berwick Healthcare on the first Tuesday of every month.

Charity turns full circle

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD THE irony was too much for Zoe - she couldn’t stop the tears from falling.

It was May 2010 and the 29-year-old from Endeavour Hills was visiting her Greek relatives in Athens, a mere two weeks after she had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

Soon her uncle dug out an old Dandenong Journal article, cut from a 1988 edition.

Although the paper had yellowed with time, there was something timeless about the photo of 19-month-old Zoe AngouriasVerlin showing a beaming smile and clutching a teddy bear almost the same size as she was.

The article was about one-year-old Zoe taking part in a baby show fund-raiser - for multiple sclerosis.

“I cried, I actually cried, because it was so ironic,” Zoe told Star News this week.

Almost three decades after she took part in one fund-raiser, Zoe will be participating in another when she has her hair cut for the World’s Greatest Shave.

Zoe sees it as the least she can do. She knows what it feels like to be diagnosed with an illness that changes one’s whole outlook on life.

When the left side of her body went numb six years ago, Zoe was convinced she had a brain tumour.

The truth - MS - wasn’t any better.

“It’s changed a lot of things, I’m constantly on medication,” she said.

“It’s the little things, it’s unpredictable.

I don’t know if I’m going to wake up tomorrow and feel great or wake up and my legs don’t work.”

When Zoe spoke to Star News on Thursday, her right eye has been blurry for three weeks.

“I have constant battles with fatigue and numbness,” she said.

“I have difficulty walking, I have to

As if that wasn’t enough, Zoe can’t feel her finger tips at all.

And until he died from lung cancer in 2012, Zoe’s father, Nick, was a constant source of inspiration.

“He was my life,” she said of her dad.

Now despite her fight with MS and the constant day-to-day battles it produces, Zoe is using her life to help others through the World’s Greatest Shave.

Serious night of trivia

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD MICHAEL Marks and his family know how devastating kidney failure can be.

In 2014 renal failure saw Michael suffer from two cardiac arrests, stopping his heart for 35 minutes during which the Hampton Park man was declared clinically dead.

Luckily during this incident, Michael was already at the hospital, and doctors were able to save his life, but the 50-yearold has been constantly reminded of his frailty as he waits desperately on the transplant list for a new kidney.

In the meantime, Michael, his wife Sandra, and their sons Paul and Shayne have been working tirelessly to seek support for a special trivia night fund-raiser they are holding on Saturday 5 March, in conjunction with Kidney Health Australia.

But the four of them have found it incredibly difficult to get local business on board, which has spurred Michael on to raise awareness about the terrible nature of kidney failure.

“Every time we go looking for donations from different companies, we keep getting the same response - ‘I’ve given to the cancer people’ or I’ve given to the heart people’,” Michael said.

“We feel as if the people who have got renal failure, kidney failure, are being overlooked.”

Michael is not undermining the seriousness and the benefits of cancer and heart fund-raisers, he just wants to ensure patients suffering from kidney disease are afforded attention as well.

“I’d just like to see awareness get out there in the community,” he said.

“If you can’t get awareness, you can’t get a cure and if you can’t get a cure, people die.

“It’s a pretty simple scenario.”

For him, the difference between life and death is dialysis treatment as he waits on the transplant list, a wait he’s already endured for 18 months and one he’s told can take up to five years.

Michael undergoes dialysis treatment at the Cranbourne Integrated Car Unit three days a week, for five hours at a time.

“They pump the blood out and clean it and put it back into your body,” Michael said.

“People don’t understand the implications that renal failure has.”

Michael was first diagnosed with kidney failure in 2014 and since then his life has been a compromise.

Among many concessions, Michael is restricted to only doing paper work for his gardening business, as he is now unable to do the physical work he once relished.

“I can’t sustain any long-term activities, if I was to go for a walk, instead of half an hour I’m lucky to do five minutes,” he said.

“Any strenuous physical work and I’m done for the day.”

However, while his physical prowess

has been diminished by the disease, the same can’t be said for Michael’s mental strength.

“It’s made me realise you’ve ‘gotta live life to the fullest - you can’t just turn around and take things for granted,” he said.

The Kidney Health Trivia Night will be held this Saturday 5 March at the Village Green Hotel in Mulgrave from 6.30pm.

TOORADIN will soon be scattered with more than 1000 baits aimed at reducing the fox population, to protect the wildlife and livestock in the region.

The fox control program, a part of the Western Port Biosphere’s Growing Connections project, will begin in late March and run for a year.

Baits will be buried at a depth that other animals will not be able to smell, however the community is advised to keep dogs away from the baited areas.

The bid to protect livestock and wildlife will see 1080 baits laid from Dore Road and Muddy Gates Lane in the west, Manks Road to the north and Dalmore Road to the east.

Residents will receive letters, warning them of where and when the baits will be laid and advisory signs will be displayed throughout the targeted region.

To ensure the program is effective, some baits will be buried on private land, with the approval of the owners.

The baits will be closely monitored during the program.

Hi-tech herbs on the way

By CASEY NEILL A DEVON Meadows farm is leading an agri-tech revolution and increasing its yields by 75 per cent.

Australian Fresh Leaf unveiled a new greenhouse on Wednesday 2 March, complete with cloud technology.

Television screens guide employees on exactly when and what herbs to plant, pick and pack.

The herbs are growing on Dutch-designed rolling benches that can be pushed together to increase planting space, and rolled into an adjoining shed so employees can harvest the herbs at the one location.

Australian Fresh Leaf co-founder Jan Vydra said the company started out producing 2000 bunches of herbs each week.

Today it produces 150,000 bunches, pots and punnets of 60 different varieties of herbs, edible flowers and Australian natives.

Mr Vydra credited a “persistence to challenge the norm and look for a better way to do things”.

“In 2008, we ducked out of our corporate jobs and took a bit of a risk, and our vision was to be the leader in the horticulture industry, to grow beautiful herbs and to evolve farming practices by using sustainable practices and innovative practices,” he said.

“We have bold plans.

“We want to expand our operations over the next 12 to 18 months to open a new 30,000 square metre new facility, hopefully in the City of Casey, and expand into New South Wales over the next three to five years.”

Mr Vydra said the greenhouse happened with help from a $430,000 interest-free loan through the Coles Nurture Fund.

Coles managing director John Durkan said this was the first Nurture Fund project completed.

“This is really why we started the fund,” he said.

Mr Durkan praised the “new technology and new efficiencies” implemented and said Mr Vydra had to “take a risk, be bold and innovative” to make the project happen.

“This is transformational for our herb business,” he said.

City of Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said the project was a prime example of the innovation that the Casey Cardinia Region actively encouraged.

He said the evolution of “agri-tech” would bring IT professionals, programmers and scientists onto farms.

“This new era of farming welcomes forward-thinking businesses,” he said.

Clampdown on bad councillors

TRAFFIC concerns and monkey bike legislation was on the tip of everyone’s tongues at Cranbourne Park’s Coffee with a Cop morning tea, where residents had the chance to ask police officers their burning questions.

Cranbourne Sergeant Carolyn Hill met with dozens of Cranbourne locals on Wednesday 24 February, where she talked about crime prevention strategies and answered the questions that don’t get asked over the phone.

“Community engagement is the main reason for Coffee with a Cop and it’s for people who don’t ring police, because they know we are busy,” Sgt Hill said.

“The Coffee with a Cop environment isn’t intimidating and they can take the time to ask us questions about the law, without feeling like they are wasting our time.”

Sgt Hill said many passers-by stopped to thank police for the work they do and others sat down for a coffee at Cranbourne Park, which sponsored the morning tea.

“We had a great response from the public, and a lot of their questions were about legislation around monkey bikes,” Sgt Hill said.

Currently monkey bike users must hold a motorcycle licence to be able to ride the notorious motor bikes.

And Sgt Hill said she explained to at least four people that monkey bikes can legally be driven on privately-owned property with the consent of the landowner.

“Riding monkey bikes in public reserves could be a breach of council bylaws, it depends on who owns the land,” she said.

THE State Government has sent out a warning to all local councils as new misconduct laws take effect this week.

Under amendments to the Local Government Act passed last year, councils now have a greater authority to deal with councillor misconduct internally including new and improved procedures to address alleged code of conduct breaches.

The changes empower councils and the government to take action against councillors doing the wrong thing.

Allegations of misconduct and serious misconduct will be dealt with by independent Councillor Conduct Panels which will have the power to suspend councillors for up to six months.

Councillors retain a right of appeal to VCAT but can no longer bypass Councillor Conduct Panels and have hearings moved to VCAT before a final decision is made.

Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins said: “When one bad apple does the wrong thing” it is important that there are “quick and robust processes in place to deal with misconduct”.

“Standards of council governance in Victoria are higher than they have ever been before thanks to the Labor Government’s new laws,” she said.

“No-one asked about home invasions, but we did have a question about speeding through work zones,” she said.

“One road worker felt people were

continuously speeding through the new, slower, speed limits and depending on what speed they are travelling at normal road rules apply to those zones.”

Sgt Hill encourages Cranbourne home owners to keep their doors locked and car keys out of sight after a recent spate of home invasions targeting cars and personal items.

“Don’t leave car keys on hooks or on the kitchen table,” she said.

By RUSSELL BENNETT THE Pakenham Silverbacks just continue to create history.

On Sunday at Heatherbrae Reserve in Officer, the first women’s side in the gridiron club’s brief existence stepped on to the field for their debut game, Coming up against the buzz-saw that is the established Northern Lady Raiders outfit, the Silverbacks knew they’d be in for arguably their toughest possible initiation into Gridiron Victoria competition.

Yet, while they didn’t come away with the points - going down 61-8 - the Silverbacks showed plenty of promising signs for the future.

Sam Kelly wrote her own small chapter of Silverbacks history, becoming the first player to cross for a touchdown for the women’s side.

“I’m extremely proud of the ladies’ efforts, they played with a lot of heart right through to the end,” said Silverbacks club founder, and inaugural ladies team coach Richie Howlett.

“We had anticipated the Raiders to be our most difficult opponent this season and they certainly didn’t disappoint.

“It’s great to see now where the

benchmark is and all the ladies have taken something out of it.”

Earlier in the day on Sunday, the Silverbacks’ junior side was simply superb in an emphatic win over the South Eastern Predators, 52-20.

The club has already marched ahead in leaps and bounds since its inception, but on Sunday its junior side gave a glimpse as to the thrilling upside still to come in the near future.

“It was great to see them come away with such a convincing win,” Howlett said.

“Now sitting on a draw and a win; this is the best start they’ve had in the three years of the program. “(Coach) Leed Wesolowski’s done an excellent job with the boys, and we’ve been lucky to have a near complete retention of boys from last season through to this year.”

The Under 19s side currently sits in second spot on the eight-team ladder, just behind the Monash Warriors, who they will face at 10am this Saturday at the Corio Community Reserve.

The women’s side, meanwhile, heads to Reservoir on Sunday to take on the Croydon Rangers - also from 10am.

ADDING to Pakenham’s burgeoning sporting community, the Pakenham Eels are ready to give rugby league a try.

Joining NRL Victoria over the off-season, the Pakenham Eels Rugby League Club is set to shine in 2016 after a large number of players pledged interest before the club even opened the doors.

While it was kept under wraps throughout the summer, as the interim committee figured out whether it would be viable in Pakenham, the official announcement came last week as the club started up its inaugural pre-season.

Pakenham Eels interim committee member Jason Buchanan was thrilled to see the club grow from fairly innocuous roots late last year as a bit of a laugh quickly turned into a flourishing organisation.

“We had some discussions with NRL Victoria last year and

push a case and things have been moving pretty quickly this year.

“The club is registered and we should be in a position to start taking some player registrations soon.”

The team’s pre-season training is running at Don Jackson Reserve, Pakenham, but the club is set to play home matches at O’Neil Road Recreation Reserve, Beaconsfield.

The Eels hope to put senior men, senior women’s tackle or tag and Under 6 to Under 17s into NRL Victoria competitions this season, starting in April.

They won’t just be a wintersports club either; the Eels are registered as a Touch Football Association and will keep the game going all-year round.

Finals pressure is on

By RUSSELL BENNETT WGCA PREMIER DIVISION PREVIEW - SEMI FINALS MERINDA Park Premier skipper Danny Diwell summed it up best when interviewed by the News in the lead-up to this weekend’s door-die semi-finals.

“They well and truly deserve to be favourites - they’ve been the dominant side all year,” he said of the so far undefeated Pakenham, the Cobras’ opponents this weekend.

“But finals cricket is a funny game, and a different game.

“People say they don’t feel pressure and just play their natural games, but that doesn’t happen.”

“Finals separate the great players from the good players.”

That, in a nutshell, sums up the situation in this game. Pakenham has been the class of the competition all season, with great depth with either bat or ball in hand. They’re the red-hot favourites who’ve comfortably defeated Merinda Park twice already this season. But none of that means anything now. Not really.

“Everyone is on a clean slate now. We get a home final, but it’s still a 22-yard pitch - the same as theirs,” said Pakenham’s inspirational leader Dom Paynter.

“The proof is in the pudding."

When it comes to his own fitness this week, after picking up a nasty thumb injury, Paynter is emphatic.

“I’m playing - I’ll be right,” he said.

“I batted on Saturday and felt good - I didn’t feel any discomfort and the instinct to play naturally was still there,” he said.

“If I don’t score any runs, it (the thumb) is no excuse.”

“You can’t take blokes into a final who aren’t up to it.”

Diwell and his men enter this weekend’s game knowing that, at stages, they did have Pakenham on the ropes at one stage in Round 6.

“We’ll take the positives out of those games (earlier in the season),” he said.

“They were 4/50 at one stage in the first game and we let the foot of the pedal.

“But we need to be consistent with the ball all day.”

Diwell predicted any score around the 200 mark by the side batting first would be particularly tough to chase down, with finals pressure thrown in the mix.

Merinda Park advanced to the finals off the back of an emphatic win over Upper Beaconsfield; while Kooweerup and Cardinia -

who fought it out for the past two premierships - will go head-tohead in the other semi-final after the Demons proved a class above Tooradin.

The semi-finals will both be held over Saturday and Sunday this weekend, with Pakenham taking on Merinda Park at Toomuc Reserve; and Cardinia hosting Kooweerup at E. Gunton Oval at the Cardinia Recreation Reserve.

The gulf between the sides was evident to the 6834 fans that streamed to the ground, just to get a glimpse of the Tigers thrashing the Hawks by 71 points.

Peugeot adds its allure

By PETER ANDERSON THE 208 range hasn’t exactly set Australian sales charts on fire but has been a fine return to form for the French manufacturer after a couple of duffers.

Its top-of-the-range GTi has, however, got plenty of attention for the most convincing attempt to reboot the beloved 205 GTi. Not everyone wants or can afford that range-topper, however, but with its excellent ride and handling on offer, Peugeot has sent the 208 Allure to finishing school to create the GT Line.

While the 208 range starts at $15,990 with a five-speed manual 60kW Access, the GT-Line weighs in at a GTi-troubling $27,490 (the GTi is $29,990).

The GTi has more power and torque but is a six-speed manual only and will, of course, cost more to run.

The price is almost the same as its French rival Renault’s Clio GT. For this level of spend you get Peugeot’s seven-inch screen powering a sixspeaker stereo, front and rear parking sensors, auto-parking, dual-zone climate control, power windows and folding mirrors, leather steering wheel and handbrake, rear parking sensors, central locking, cruise control with braking function, cloth trim and 16-inch alloy wheels.

Metallic paint is a $990 option and there’s the $1050 option of textured matte paint which Peugeot says is lowmaintenance.

Peugeot 208 goes GTi-lite and is still heaps of fun.

The optional Active City Brake feature at $500 also includes a reversing camera which is $300 on its own.

The GT Line, as the name suggests, is well on its way to looking like a GTi with 16-inch alloys, a lower stance and the tell-tale bodykit and LED daytime running lights.

The grille is flecked with red flashes for an “equaliser” effect and there’s various chrome and red bits to sort the GT from the lower models.

The windscreen is gigantic, soaring up to your forehead (and further if you have the panoramic roof), with the high ceiling delivering a ton of headroom.

Inside space is impressive for such a small car with a decent-sized boot at 311 litres.

The sportier more heavily bolstered seats are still very comfortable with a wide range of adjustment to help you get comfortable behind the i-Cockpit, which consists of high dials and low steering wheel.

As in the 308, the steering wheel is very small indeed so you can see those dials but is off-putting to some. It takes a while to get the position right.

The rear seats are comfortable enough, but the rear seat is tight for leg, knee and shoulder room.

Storage is limited with a pair of small cupholders up front and a bin hidden underneath the rather inconveniently-sited central armrest.

Six airbags, ABS, brake assist, brake force distribution, stability and traction controls and load-limited front seat-belts add up to five ANCAP stars.

The seven-inch screen is bright and clear but is still slow to respond to your inputs and isn’t exactly the last word in ease-of-use or up-to-the minute design.

The screen takes care of not only satnav and stereo but also the full trip computer and climate control.

There’s a lot going on there and it would be fine if the screen wasn’t so slow to respond to your fingers.

The sat-nav is pretty good if not highly-detailed or high resolution and the stereo, once you’ve worked it out, delivers good sound and works more than happily with your Bluetooth or USB-connected phone.

The GT-Line shares the Puretech 1.2 litre turbocharged three cylinder with the Active and Allure.

The triple pumps out 81kW and 205Nm (why not go for 208? Just for laughs?), the stop-start helping with a combined claimed fuel-consumption of 4.5 litres per 100km which is, well, unlikely to be matched seeing we got 8.2 L/100km, admittedly in an especially sticky week in a Sydney summer. The GT-Line reaches 0-100km/h in a leisurely 10.9 seconds, the six-speed transmis-

sion’s shifts fast and smooth.

A standard 208 is close to, if not the benchmark for ride and handling in its class.

The standard GTi is the best riding hot hatch in the world even if it doesn’t have that ultimate handling ability, which few of its owners will ever use, of its Renault, Ford and VW rivals.

The GT Line chassis falls in the middle of the standard and GTi tunes and is all the better for it.

The tauter chassis further sharpens the already-excellent steering and the fast-responding throttle and transmission make the 208 feel a lot more sprightly than its 0-100km/h figures suggests.

The three-cylinder’s growl is as enjoyable as ever and is a good soundtrack to your hard work if you’ve pointed the car down the inevitable winding road.

There’s plenty of grip on offer, way more than the engine could ever overwhelm but at the same time, it’s a terrific amount of fun.

That extra handling ability doesn’t ruin the ride but it does give it an edge, with body roll almost eliminated.

The larger tyres are also a little noisier, but again, if you like a bit of fun, it’s all worth it.

Even if you’re not a petrolhead, the GT Line comes with plenty of useful features but you might just have to ask yourself if $27,490 for a 208 is worth it.
