By ANEEKA SIMONIS THE daughter of a rape, murder victim has put her full support behind a bold new Coalition Bill taking the power away from convicted killers.

Last week, the State Opposition unveiled proposed new laws that would prevent convicted killers from receiving parole if they refuse to reveal the location of the body of the victims.

Cranbourne woman Janine Greening heads the Victoria Homicide Victims Support Group’s Forget Me Not Foundation – set on supporting those left behind in murder, homicide and missing persons’ cases.

Some were adults when they went missing, others thought to have vanished due to foul play were children – but all leave behind a web of tragically torn friends and family left forever wondering.

“I can only imagine what a nightmare that would be. Every one of us would like to have the body of our loved one to put them to rest in a place we know,” Ms Greening said.

“These people are all stuck at that point in time when their loved one last went out the door.

“It’s horrific to think killers can have that power over them.”

Ms Greening’s mother, Marie Greening Zidan, 70, was sexually assaulted and killed by two minors in her Seaford home in 2000.

Her intellectually disabled son cowered in terror in the corner of the room as the killers, then aged 15 and 16, took the great-grandmother’s life.

Ms Greening was down the street as the horror unfolded.

But horror does not begin to describe the 15-year ordeal she has been through – though Ms Greening said it would have undoubtedly been worse if her mother’s body was taken.

loved ones and they should decide the resting place, not convicted killers,” he said.

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH TRAFFIC concerns and monkey bike legislation was on the tip of everyone’s tongues at Cranbourne Park’s Coffee with a Cop morning tea, where residents had the chance to ask police officers their burning questions.

Cranbourne Sergeant Carolyn Hill met with dozens of Cranbourne locals on Wednesday 24 February, where she talked about crime prevention strategies and answered the questions that don’t get asked over the phone.

“Community engagement is the main reason for Coffee with a Cop and it’s for people who don’t ring police, because they know we are busy,” Sgt Hill said.

“The Coffee with a Cop environment isn’t intimidating and they can take the time to ask us questions about the law, without feeling like they are wasting our time.”

Sgt Hill said many passers-by stopped to thank police for the work they do and others sat down for a coffee at Cranbourne Park, which sponsored the morning tea.

“We had a great response from the public, and a lot of their questions were about legislation around monkey bikes,” Sgt Hill said.

Currently monkey bike users must hold a motorcycle licence to be able to ride the notorious motor bikes.

And Sgt Hill said she explained to at least four people that monkey bikes can legally be driven on privately-owned property with the consent of the landowner.

“Riding monkey bikes in public reserves could be a breach of council bylaws, it depends on who owns the land,” she said.

TOORADIN will soon be scattered with more than 1000 baits aimed at reducing the fox population, to protect the wildlife and livestock in the region.

The fox control program, a part of the Western Port Biosphere’s Growing Connections project, will begin in late March and run for a year.

Baits will be buried at a depth that other animals will not be able to smell, however the community is advised to keep dogs away from the baited areas.

The bid to protect livestock and wildlife will see 1080 baits laid from Dore Road and Muddy Gates Lane in the west, Manks Road to the north and Dalmore Road to the east.

Residents will receive letters, warning them of where and when the baits will be laid and advisory signs will be displayed throughout the targeted region.

To ensure the program is effective, some baits will be buried on private land, with the approval of the owners.

The baits will be closely monitored during the program.

Man mugged for phones, wallet A MAN was pulled from his car and mugged in the Cranbourne Community House parking lot.

The victim was parked in the lot about 8.50pm on Tuesday 23 February when a black Ford Territory pulled in behind him.

A man got out of the Ford and threatened the victim with a black pole before pulling him out of his car.

The man stole the victim’s wallet and two mobile phones before fleeing.

The thief is described as Pacific Islander in appearance, was about six feet tall, overweight, and had his long hair tied in a bun.

Trivia night is serious MICHAEL Marks and his family know how devastating kidney failure can be.

In 2014 renal failure saw Michael suffer from two cardiac arrests, stopping his heart for 35 minutes during which the Hampton Park man was declared clinically dead.

Luckily during this incident, Michael was already at the hospital, and doctors were able to save his life, but the 50-year-old has been constantly reminded of his frailty as he waits desperately on the transplant list for a new kidney.

In the meantime, Michael, his wife Sandra, and their sons Paul and Shayne have been working tirelessly to seek support for a special trivia night fund-raiser they are holding on Saturday 5 March, in conjunction with Kidney Health Australia.

But the four of them have found it incredibly difficult to get local business on

board, which has spurred Michael on to raise awareness about the terrible nature of kidney failure.

“Every time we go looking for donations from different companies, we keep getting the same response - ‘I’ve given to the cancer people’ or I’ve given to the heart people’,” Michael said.

“We feel as if the people who have got renal failure, kidney failure, are being overlooked.”

Michael is not undermining the seriousness and the benefits of cancer and heart fund-raisers, he just wants to ensure patients suffering from kidney disease are afforded attention as well.

“I’d just like to see awareness get out there in the community,” he said.

“If you can’t get awareness, you can’t get a cure and if you can’t get a cure, people die.

“It’s a pretty simple scenario.”

It was simple for Michael when he

was diagnosed with kidney failure two years ago. For him, the difference between life and death is dialysis treatment as he waits on the transplant list, a wait he’s already endured for 18 months and one he’s told can take up to five years.

Michael undergoes dialysis treatment at the Cranbourne Integrated Car Unit three days a week, for five hours at a time.

“They pump the blood out and clean it and put it back into your body,” Michael said.

“People don’t understand the implications that renal failure has.”

Michael was first diagnosed with kidney failure in 2014 and since then his life has been a compromise.

Among many concessions, Michael is restricted to only doing paper work for his gardening business, as he is now unable to do the physical work he once relished.

“I can’t sustain any long-term activities, if I was to go for a walk, instead of half an hour I’m lucky to do five minutes,” he said.

“Any strenuous physical work and I’m done for the day.”

However, while his physical prowess has been diminished by the disease, the same can’t be said for Michael’s mental strength.

“It’s made me realise you’ve ‘gotta live life to the fullest - you can’t just turn around and take things for granted,” he said.

The Kidney Health Trivia Night will be held this Saturday 5 March at the Village Green Hotel in Mulgrave from 6.30pm.

Plea to ease pressure from parking fine fees

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH UNPAID traffic fines are crippling Casey families, but after a big push from Casey North Community Information and Support Service (CISS) and Judith Couacaud Graley MP, Casey residents could be given a second chance.

Executive officer at Casey North CISS, Susan Magee, wrote to Attorney General Martin Pakula MP, in early February asking for a six-month, state-wide

amnesty on administration fees attached to unpaid traffic fines.

Ms Magee also wants to see a review into the “complicated and inflexible” payment system, due to Casey’s high number of outstanding penalties.

She said Casey residents’ debt was one of the highest in the state.

Narre Warren South MP Ms Couacaud Graley raised the matter in Parliament on Wednesday 24 February and has since secured a meeting with Mr

Pakula and Ms Magee to be held in coming weeks.

Ms Graley said in Parliament, “Many local residents contact my office seeking help with their unpaid fines and the administration fees that very quickly add up.”

“In fact, almost 30,000 residents in the City of Casey currently owe $102 million in traffic fines. It is an outstanding and alarming fact.”

A BRAZEN thief was forced to flee a Hampton Park house last weekend after he was disturbed by the occupants.

The victims found the man in their Meredith Crescent home, about 9.30pm on Sunday 28 February, but he fled the property without stealing anything.

Road closure plan slammed

By CASEY NEILL CRANBOURNE, Lynbrook and Lyndhurst drivers face a longer commute if shock plans to close Abbotts Road at the level crossing go ahead.

South Eastern Metropolitan MP Inga Peulich has launched a petition at ingapeulich.org calling for the State Government to abandon the Dandenong South plan.

The Level Crossing Removal Authority (LCRA) has proposed a new road link over the Cranbourne rail line connecting Remington Drive to Pound Road and “the truncation of Abbotts Road”, which means its closure.

The LCRA said there had been two deaths and many injuries at the site in the past seven years and “this option would provide significant benefit to the Dandenong South Industrial Precinct”.

It did not put forward any alternative plans.

Ms Peulich said re-routing traffic heading along Abbotts Road between Cranbourne,

Lynbrook, Lyndhurst and beyond would add an extra 1.5 kilometres each way and further burden the surrounding road network.

“It takes up to 45 minutes to cross Westernport Highway on Thompson Road, 35 minutes at Hall Road, and up to 40 minutes on Glasscocks Road - a dirt road!” she said.

“It can take 40 minutes to get down Abbotts Road to turn at South Gippsland Highway and now they’re planning to extend that by 1.5km, as well as putting more pressure on the Pound Road intersection which will impact on South Gippsland Highway, Greens Road and the Dandenong Bypass.”

But Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said there were other options on the table.

“The LCRA has mucked this up,” she said.

“I’ve raised this with Minister Allan as the minister responsible and have got her assurance that what was put forward is not the position of government.”

was an opportunity to address other connectivity problems in the area, including the dead-end Remington Drive.

So two weeks ago in parliament, she called for an evening industry forum and is awaiting a date.

“Industry are the ones that know best how traffic flows in the area,” she said.

“They use it every day. Their businesses depend on those networks.

“We are seeking to work with them.”

At its Tuesday meeting Casey councillors expressed concern about the impact the closure would have on Casey drivers using the South Gippsland Hwy, Thompson Road and a closed Evans Road.

Councillors agreed to send letters to key Casey businesses and residents who will be directly affected, stating their objection to the closure.

A meeting to discuss the closure will be held on Friday 4 March, around 7am, at the Nissan Factory on FrankstonDandenong Road.

Youth-designed park opens CASEY secondary students involved in the collaborative design of the Selandra Rise youth park have watched it come alive over five years.

Twenty students from St Peter’s College East Cranbourne, Casey Grammar and Hillcrest Christian College inspired the design of the skate park and hang out in Clyde North.

Some started the planning process in Year 8 and are now

The park, on Vantage Avenue, was officially opened on Friday 19 February and will sustain more than 2000 residents in Selandra Rise, which opened in 2012.

Students worked closely with Stockland Development to ensure the park fitted their needs and Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said the space was an innovative and exciting park for all ages.

“The structure of the space provides a series of areas to accommodate individual and group enjoyment,” Cr Aziz said.

“You could play basketball or football, watch a performance, have a barbecue or simply read a book - this park offers something for everyone.”

The space will also become home to the Casey 360, mobile Youth Information Centre.

Ex-mayor Ablett missed 11 out of 33 meetings and Cr Morland’s record was only 83 per cent.

Clean up your act ALMOST every visitor to Australia is greatly impressed by the cleanliness of our cities.

Littering is strictly prohibited, household rubbish is placed in big garbage bins that are emptied within 24 hours.

But, unfortunately, all these glamorous aspects are gradually disappearing in some of our cities.

In the City of Casey, for example, the way in which hard waste is collected is very bad.

Residents are encouraged to leave their hard rubbish for days outside on nature strips before collection. As everybody knows the environment has become a daily topic of conversation worldwide and schoolchildren are taught about the protection of the environment and the fight against pollution.

According to council, though, “all hard rubbish should be placed out for collection

by Sunday night on the weekend before your scheduled collection week”.

In reality, however, the ugly sights on the nature strips remain for at least three weeks before collection. One may wonder why Casey council doesn’t follow the good example of some other councils in Victoria where residents of a pre-designated area or ward are asked to put their hard rubbish out for collection within 24 or 48 hours.

Undoubtedly, it would be wise for Casey council to review its policy regarding hard rubbish collection in order to spare all residents of such a permanent eyesore.

Breaking boundaries THE Victorian Electoral Commission is currently conducting a review of the electoral boundaries for the City of Casey.

Under their plan, 9214 voters will be moved out of the wards that they are currently in.

CASEY councillor Damien Rosario was elected this year’s chairman of the Casey-Cardinia Library Corporation.

He hopes to link local schools with the online resources the libraries offer and promote community awareness.

“Schools can use these resources in classrooms for free,” he said.

“As a councillor I am facilitating conversations between school principals and the libraries.”

A MAN recently felt the wrath of Dandenong Drug Court after bringing some of his stash to the courthouse.

The man, who is on a drug treatment courtorder, arrived at court with a mints tin con-

taining drug “residue” a defence lawyer told a judge.

He realised his mistake and threw the tin in a bin outside the court prior to being screened by court security.

Unluckily for him, an alert PSO retrieved the tin and arrested the man.

DANDENONG Magistrates’ Court dock and two custody officers were not enough to restrain one highly agitated offender.

The accused’s bail application came to an abrupt halt when he barrelled through the dock’s gate, bursting into the public gallery.

Fortunately, two police officers were in the courtroom and offered immediate reinforcement.

There was some doubt over whether the accused would find the inner calm to resume his quest for bail.

TWO Cranbourne stalwarts were warmly congratulated for their long-standing service to the community last month.

Retiring couple Barbara Maggs and Tony Jenner were acknowledged by Balla Balla Ward councillor Geoff Ablett at the February council meeting.

“A huge congratulations to Barbara Maggs and Tony Jenner on their retirement from organising the Cranbourne Christmas Motorcycle toy and food run for the past 31 years, delivering to those in need in our local community,” Cr Ablett said.

“You’re both champions!”

IT EMERGED at a function this week that Casey Mayor Sam Aziz was a contestant in a 1989 English speaking contest where former weather man Rob Gell was the MC. The pair were reunited in Devon Meadows at the Australian Fresh Leaf greenhouse launch on Wednesday 2 March.

“Sam was a student then... never mind,” Rob trailed off, realising he was showing his age.

But Cr Aziz told him: “You only seem to be getting younger.”

Leave town addict urged

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A TRAINED nurse turned ice user and dealer has been urged by a judge to stay away from the “Dandenong-Cranbourne area”.

Emily Smith, 21, of Cranbourne, was directed by Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 29 February to stay with family in Wonthaggi to complete her community corrections order.

It was, however, noted that she first tried ice in Wonthaggi, her home town, at the behest of her boyfriend and drug dealer.

Smith faced charges over being found by police with increasing amounts of ice while on a corrections order in the past two months.

On 10 February she fled from her Cranbourne home during a nearby “police incident” that she wasn’t involved with, the court was told.

Smith jumped neighbours’ fences and was found hiding in bushes in a nearby property. A deal bag containing six grams of meth was found on the ground nearby.

Police also seized a gold-co-

loured Toyota Kluger with false plates as well as its keys found on Smith.

The accused told police she had the keys for “safe keeping”, the court was told.

At 4am on 29 February, Smith was found in a car in an alley behind shops in Cranbourne.

Police seized two deal bags with a total of 12.81 grams of ice, a bottle of clear liquid, a syringe and $270 cash.

The court noted that one gram of ice had a street value of between $500 and $1000.

Smith denied knowledge of the items and was remanded to face court that day.

The accused was also intercepted driving while suspended in a car with false, cancelled registration plates on South Gippsland Highway, Lynbrook, on 1 February.

Smith’s lawyer said the accused moved from Wonthaggi to Cranbourne last March and had become highly addicted.

She was trying to cut down from a daily use of 0.5 grams of ice and 20 mL of GHB, the court was told.

Smith had a “slow start” to the early stages of her correction order, the lawyer said.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said he would not release Smith, while ice addicted, into the community.

“She needs time off the drug.

But I don’t want her getting comfortable in custody either.”

Mr Vandersteen noted Smith’s prior offences of trafficking, drug possession, having a controlled weapon and careless driving.

He said Smith was “intelligent” and “capable” but “really wobbling at the moment”.

“You’re living a life foreign to most people. You’re getting into an area of ... not only using more but trafficking more.

“You’ve got to get out of the Dandenong-Cranbourne area.

“Wonthaggi is a small area ... people know who you are and you will have better one-on-one time at corrections.”

He jailed Smith for seven days with release on a treatment-focused, judicially-monitored community corrections order.

Teens behind bars as cops swoop on home invaders

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD AND GEORGIA WESTGARTH AT LEAST 19 teenagers have been processed by police in the last fortnight as the spate of home invasions and luxury car thefts across Casey and Dandenong ramps up.

Twelve of these youths have been remanded in custody, with police investigating at least 30 burglaries in Melbourne’s outer south-east over the last two weeks.

It’s understood almost all of the youths are teenagers.

A police spokesman told Star News it was “rare” to find anyone aged 20 or older involved in the burglaries, where brazen thieves break into occupied homes and steal car keys from a bench.

Last week it was reported that a series of car thefts occurred between Friday 19 and Saturday 20 February and spanned Keysborough, Berwick, Narre Warren South and Wheelers Hill.

Detective Sergeant Ivan Bobetic from the Dandenong Embona Taskforce said last week that investigations into the car thefts and possible links to the notorious 'apex gang' remained ongoing.

“It’s certainly an avenue of inquiry - it appears the ‘apex gang’ is so widespread now, however to categorise them as a group or gang is folly at this point in time, it’s just something that we’ve got in the back of our minds and are exploring as part of the investigation,” Det Sgt Bobetic said.

“This type of offending has been occurring for 18 months to two years but not all are related to this group of offenders.”

While those processed in recent weeks are all under 18 years of age, Det Sgt Bobetic said a range of different groups and ages were involved in the burglaries to some degree.

“A lot of them are known to each other,” he said.

“The level of violence and lack of contrition is alarming for their ages - it seems they have no concept of what they are doing, conscience for the victims or they simply don’t care.”

HOLT MP Anthony Byrne has warned people against using “inflammatory and derogatory” language in the debate about the Safe Schools program.

Last week Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull ordered an independent review of the taxpayer-funded program - aimed at helping lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and/or intersex (LGBTI) school students - after its manual came under attack from right-wing politicians and the Australian Christian Lobby.

Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott Tuesday called for the program to be axed.

Mr Byrne, who convened a well-publicised summit on youth suicide in Casey in 2012, urged people to be wary of the language they used when discussing the program, days after Coalition MP George Christensen likened the Safe Schools initiative to grooming undertak-

en by sexual predators.

“It is critical in any debate about this issue that inflammatory and derogatory language not be used,” Mr Byrne said.

“Words can literally kill.

“Any debate about this program must be temperate and take into account the suffering and anguish of those whom the Safe Schools program seeks to help.”

A number of Casey schools are signed up to the Safe Schools program, including Cranbourne Secondary College, Fountain Gate Secondary College, Hallam Senior College and Oatlands Primary School in Narre Warren.

“I have met with young people dealing with gender identity and same sex relationship issues who tell me of the bullying they have experienced and heard of the attempts of self-harm that this bullying precipitated,” Mr Byrne said.

While Berwick Lodge Primary School is not part of the program, its principal Henry Grossek said the Safe School initiative was a “positive move” and could see his school joining up “down the track”.

“I think Safe Schools is a positive move, I think it’s one that’s new and breaking new ground, there’s a lot of community apprehension about it, because it does touch a sensitive area for a lot of people,” he said.

“Gender is a sensitive area, one that people hold strong views on, starting to dialogue on that can be awkward.

“I think teachers and principals have a lot to learn in a constructive way because we’ve not done it before.”

Car wash burglary bid fails POLICE are on the lookout for three offenders who used an angle grinder and a jemmy bar in an attempt to open a security door at a Cranbourne car wash.

Cruise Car Spa on the South Gippsland Highway in Cranbourne was targeted by thieves on Monday 1 February at 4.50am.

A female and male offender and an unknown third offender parked a silver Hyundai SUV with false registration plates, SWP 154, before getting tools

out in an attempted burglary. The third offender kept a look out while the other two grinded the door.

The security alarm was set off in the process and the three offenders made off in the SUV. The female was wearing bright pink Adidas runners at the time of the incident.

A risk to community

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A MAN hobbled by illness has been declared a risk to the community after pleading guilty to his latest arson and drink-driving offences.

Murray Craw, 55, of Dandenong, who is fighting prostate cancer and type-two diabetes, wore a beanie as he pushed a wheeler into his Port Phillip Prison court link on 29 February.

He had been in custody for 82 days, facing his ninth drinkdriving offence, 13th for driving while suspended and fourth arson-related charge.

Among his recent charges was setting a dump master skip full of cardboard alight at the back of a Hampton Park servo about 3.15am on 9 December.

According to a police summary presented at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court, Craw set the blaze with a cigarette lighter, stepped back and lit a cigarette.

He then walked away.

While waiting for a bus in Traralgon West on 6 June, Craw lit a large pile of rubbish behind the bus shelter on Princes Highway.

While passing motorists reported the fire, Craw walked

out from behind the shelter and boarded the 7.40am bus to Morwell.

CCTV footage on the bus showed a large fire continuing to burn as the bus drove on.

Firefighters confined the fire damage to a 1.5-metre by 0.5 metre area, without it catching the wooden and metal bus shelter or road reserve.

During a police field interview, Craw said he lit the fire because he was cold, admitting he didn’t extinguish it before he left.

On 20 September, Craw ran a red light and crashed into a pregnant driver at the corner of Princes Highway and Heatherton Road, Noble Park North.

The driver and her passenger were taken by ambulance to Dandenong Hospital for observation.

An uninjured Craw, whose licence was suspended at the time, produced a 0.100 blood-alcohol sample at hospital more than 90 minutes later.

Craw was also charged with stealing a helmet from a parked Vespa on Flinders Street, Melbourne.

The accused returned it when the victim was alerted by his son: “That dude has got your helmet.”

Craw later complained to police: “How can it be theft, he has got his property back.

“Well, people stole from me while I was in hospital.”

Defence lawyer Bernard Keating said Craw desired to return to his Dandenong boarding house.

“He did trades in New Zealand. He’s lived the life, so it’s more the pity he finds himself in this situation.”

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said Craw was “likeable” but a risk to the community if his issues weren’t addressed.

“In my opinion, you’re better on a corrections order than a parole order (when released).

“From what I know of your past, drugs aren’t the issue. It’s the alcohol.”

Craw replied: “Alcohol and putting other people in front of myself.”

Craw requested the Journal “make it known” that it was the “people I have helped” that caused him to go to jail.

He was ordered to undergo a community corrections assessment at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 7 March.

Keith Dickson, who passed away on Sunday 21 February, embraced the Christmas spirit in a way no-one else did.

He dressed his house in bright lights and dressed his close mate Garry Banks in a long white beard and a big black belt so he could do what he loved most, give.

For decades Mr Dickson would spread the Christmas spirit with his wife of more than 30 years Joan Lyall, also known as Mrs Claus, and together with Mr Banks they were the epitome of Christmas.

Monahans Road neighbour Andrea Bailey recalls Mr Dickson as an “amazing local hero”.

“He got Garry to dress up for him, so he could help give out his gifts and enjoy talking

“It was a tradition for so many people and will always be remembered at Christmas time.”

Giving fit for children YOUR Health and Fitness from Cranbourne West is holding a very special group fitness class at 5-7 Paramount Boulevard on Saturday 19 March, and is encouraging the community to ‘Give that they may grow’ for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.

Entry to the event will cost $10 per person or $15 for a couple and will kick off at 9am.

All proceeds raised from the event and throughout March will go towards The Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal and help raise muchneeded funds for equipment, research and education.

Customer service manager Simon Robinson says, “This is a huge opportunity for the community to dig deep and get fit for a cause. We encourage absolutely everyone to participate with all fitness levels catered for.”

Your Health and Fitness is raising funds for the Good Friday Appeal to show their support and appreciation after several team members have had children close to their heart treated at the Royal Children’s Hospital.

Club owner Matthew Hall’s cousin has been a long-term patient at the Royal Children’s Hospital suffering from sacral agenesis while Simon’s cousin has been in and out of the hospital for many years after complications during birth left him with permanent developmental disabilities.

Both families of the children as well as Simon and Matthew would not know where they would be without the help, support and kindness of all the doctors and nurses at the Royal Children’s Hospital.

Simon Robinson said, “It’s such a fantastic cause, and I’m looking forward to raising as much money as possible. The Royal Children’s Hospital do fantastic things for so many children and we could not think of a more deserving cause to get behind”.

Anne Randall, Good Friday Appeal director said, “We’re so grateful to Your Health and Fitness for their generosity and support. The money raised will help to make a huge difference to young patients at The Royal Children’s Hospital.”

MEGASAURUS PARK SET TO OPEN WITH A ROAR AT LIVINGSTON JOIN the family fun and free entertainment at the official opening of the new dinosaur themed Megasaurus Park at Peet’s Livingston community in Cranbourne East this weekend.

Hi-tech herbs on the way

By CASEY NEILL A DEVON Meadows farm is leading an agri-tech revolution and increasing its yields by 75 per cent.

Australian Fresh Leaf unveiled a new greenhouse on Wednesday 2 March, complete with cloud technology.

Television screens guide employees on exactly when and what herbs to plant, pick and pack.

The herbs are growing on Dutch-designed rolling benches that can be pushed together to increase planting space, and rolled into an adjoining shed so employees can harvest the herbs at the one location.

Australian Fresh Leaf co-founder Jan Vydra said the company started out producing 2000 bunches of herbs each week.

Today it produces 150,000 bunches, pots and punnets of 60 different varieties of herbs, edible flowers and Australian natives.

Mr Vydra credited a “persistence to challenge the norm and look for a better way to do things”.

“In 2008, we ducked out of our corporate jobs and took a bit of a risk, and our vision was to be the leader in the horticulture industry, to grow beautiful herbs and to evolve farming practices by using sustainable practices and innovative practices,” he said.

“We have bold plans.

“We want to expand our operations over the next 12 to 18 months to open a new 30,000 square metre new facility, hopefully in the City of Casey, and expand into New South Wales over the next three to five years.”

Mr Vydra said the greenhouse happened with help from a $430,000 interest-free loan through the Coles Nurture Fund.

Coles managing director John Durkan said this was the first Nurture Fund project completed.

“This is really why we started the fund,” he said.

Mr Durkan praised the “new technology and new efficiencies” implemented and said Mr Vydra had to “take a risk, be bold and innovative” to make the project happen.

“This is transformational for our herb business,” he said.

City of Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said the project was a prime example of the innovation that the Casey Cardinia Region actively encouraged.

He said the evolution of “agri-tech” would bring IT professionals, programmers and scientists onto farms.

“This new era of farming welcomes forward-thinking businesses,” he said.

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH HAMPTON Park internet shoppers rank as some of Australia’s most savvy, with recent data revealing Victoria leads the way in bargain hunting.

The findings by postcode from cashback website, Cashrewards, found that Hampton Park sits at number nine out of the top 25 spending postcodes in the country.

spending on more than 1000 retail sites across 1591 postcodes Australia-wide, and 17 Victorian postcodes made the cut.

Hampton Park residents are surfing the net and getting cash back for their purchases at a higher rate than Balwyn North, Frankston and Doncaster residents who also made the top 25.

Eight postcodes in NSW made it into the top 25, but no Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania or Northern Territory suburbs made the list.

Last year Hampton Park homeowners secured more than $49,450 in cashback savings.

Spokesperson for Cashrewards, cofounder Lorica Clarke, said Victorians were well ahead of Sydneysiders when it came to finding ways to spend online with cash back.

“In particular, the suburbs of Brandon Park, Glen Waverley and Wheelers Hill are the ones we can proclaim as the biggest bargain hunters,” Ms Clarke said.

“Given that they are savvy enough to not only save by shopping online for deals, but also stack the savings by receiving a percentage of cash back with every purchase they make.

“We feel this may be because they are more switched on too, generally speaking, from what we know from eBay and Google trends there are more spending happening in Victoria than NSW in ecommerce.”

A space of their very own A STATE Government grant will allow Kilberry Valley Primary School to support students with disabilities through a new learning space.

The $200,000 grant a part of the Inclusive Schools Fund will be used to build re-engagement spaces for students with disabilities.

These purpose-built areas will include withdrawal spaces, a multi-sensory room, outdoor learning and will be shared for out of school care as well as daily classes.

School principal Neil Cunningham said the grant will improve an aspect of the school’s existing facilities.

“We anticipate the development of small teaching spaces, a space for group activities, multi-sensory room, a shared facility for use by out-of-schoolhours care, student access to quiet and supportive outdoor learning spaces,” Mr Cunningham said.

“We very much look forward to seeing the opportunities such a facility will provide to enrich the existing successful learning approaches for our students.”

CASEY Council has launched an online petition to tackle tagging across the municipality.

Council has long waged a war against the graffiti artists who adorn Casey’s freeway overpasses and signage with their spray paint tags, and now the City of Casey hopes its new Clean Up Your Act campaign steps it up a notch.

Local residents are being urged to sign the new petition which requests the State Government prioritise removing tags that plague VicRoads’ controlled signage and noise barriers along the Monash Freeway (Hallam Bypass) and railway bridges controlled by VicTrack.

The online petition automatically sends an email to Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan and Roads Minister Luke Donnellan, who is also the Narre Warren North MP. Earlier this month Star News reported on how Casey Council was also planning to erect signs over graffiti-ridden VicRoads property to encourage motorists to make a complaint call to get the streets cleaned up.

I have been lucky enough to have many memorable moments, but floating on my back in Lake Argyle in the Kimberley, watching the sunset with a glass of champagne while checking out the crocodiles was pretty special!

By JARROD POTTER SOUTHERN United completed its rising-star forward-line with Brittany Dudley-Smith slotting into the pink-and-blue attack.

Dudley-Smith, 22, is well known in south-east soccer circles, as she was one of the Casey Comets’ marquee players in the 2014 Women’s Premier League, and is now back in the region after signing on with the newly formed club.

“It’s amazing - being close to home and I know a lot of the girls and playing at Casey actually helped as a lot of the Casey girls are here and I know how they work and we bounce off each other so it’s awesome,” Dudley Smith said.

“It’s definitely a risk I had to take but I love it.

“I love seeing fresh faces and what talent is out there and it’s amazing how much the girls have grown in talent as they come up through the ranks.”

Higher ambitions drove Dudley-Smith to South Melbourne where she became an integral part of the championship winning side in 2015 as she booted 19 goals.

She was set to continue with South Melbourne but with the reigning champions not included in the inaugural NPL Victoria Women’s competition, Dudley-Smith decided to stay in the top flight as part of the south-east consortium.

Dudley-Smith will join up with former South Melbourne team-mates Saphri Lines and Tiffany Eliadis in Southern’s forward line and in many ways it was their insistence that got the New Zealand striker to sign on with the pink and blue.

“Tiff and Saph asked me to come down and have a bit of a trial and at the start as umming and arring, but now I’m here I’m excited to start the season with the new team, new club,” DudleySmith said.

The NPLW season kicks off on Saturday for Southern United and Dudley-Smith is ready to make her mark on the new competition.

“It’s nerve-wracking but I’m more excited than anything,” Dudley-Smith said.

“We’ve been training out at Mornington, which is lovely as they have amazing pitches -

and training at Casey as well and we’re ready to go. I think Southern this year, we’re the underdogs at the moment, but you never can fault the underdogs.

“It’s good with this new league coming up you don’t know where the teams will end up ... everything is new so I just can’t wait.”

She’s also joined up with a Southern United consortium club to coach as Dudley-Smith will take the reins of a Mornington junior girls team.

NAB clash draws monster crowd

By JARROD POTTER SHOWCASING the national game in the south east, Richmond came to Beaconsfield to play with purpose.

The Tigers brought all the big guns to its NAB Challenge clash at Holm Park Reserve on Saturday, as the power-packed list, hungry to impress in 2016, tore-apart the undermanned reigning premier Hawthorn.

The gulf between the sides was evident to the 6834 fans that streamed to the ground, just to get a glimpse of the Tigers thrashing the Hawks by 71 points.

Richmond’s elite stood tallest and had the touch of class that Hawthorn’s up-and-comers have yet to develop in a decidedly one-sided rampage.

Coleman Medallist Jack Riewoldt stole the show at Beaconsfield, playing on to slot a monster super-goal from outside the 50-metre line at the netball court end.

It started well for the powerhouse forward as he took two huge speccies in the first term, as well as a regulation goal later in the piece to keep the crowd up and about.

From there the Tigers cantered home as Shane Edwards (four goals), Ben Lennon (three goals) and youngster Connor Menadue (two goals) had it on a string up forward.

of the first AFL pre-season clash in the region.

By DAVID NAGEL PEARCEDALE trainer Jason Thompson is a great chance of adding an elusive Australian Cup to his extensive list of achievements after an amazing run of dominance in Saturday night’s heats at The Meadows.

Thompson has won just about everything else in the sport and will throw the rug over an incredible five runners for Saturday night’s final - worth $250,000 to the winner.

Thompson’s main hope looks to be Pop The Cork, the impeccably bred Brett Lee-Ima Geisha Girl dog who has saluted in 13 of his 22 starts.

Pop The Cork has drawn box eight for the final, which could be a bonus with a tight contest expected in the run to the first turn. Pop The Cork ran an impressive 29.60 in his heat.

Thompson’s other four runners will need some luck after drawing the squeeze boxes -three through six- for the national final.

But they’ve been there and done that before.

Aston Bolero (Box 3), Xtreme Knocka (Box 4) and Black Frenzy (Box 5) will reacquaint themselves with the same box that won from in their heats, while Moreira (Box 6) started from the blue-box four in his heat win.

The main danger to Thompson’s title hopes will come from Andrea Dailly after her two hopes, Diego Bale and Dyna Double One drew the inside boxes.

Dyna Double One is looking to achieve true greatness, taking out the Melbourne-Australian Cup double. Dyna Double One edged out the great Fernando Bale in an epic Melbourne Cup final at Sandown back in November.

THE thrill and excitement of Group 1 harness racing action returns to Cranbourne on Saturday night with the running of the $100,000 Decron Cranbourne Gold Cup (2555m).

Victoria Cup winners like Master Musician (1992), Golden Reign (1994 and 1997), Robin Hood (2005), Bettors Strike (2009) and Mr Feelgood (2011) have all saluted in the cup, first run in 1965.

And the last summer-edition of the cup - ran in December 2014 - may be the best run yet.

On that occasion it was champion New Zealander Terror To Love who prevailed after a stirring struggle with compatriot Christen Me. The two Kiwi superstars drew away from the field in the final lap, going eye to eye to produce a stunning finish that will long live in the memories of those in attendance.

A three-time New Zealand Cup winner, Terror To Love ($3.10) outstayed the Miracle Mile and Hunter Cup winner to win by a head, with Flaming Flutter 20-metres back in third place.

PREMIER CRICKET - ROUND 17 (Day 1) CASEY-SOUTH Melbourne will have to chase a monster total in its last day as it failed to make a dint against Carlton (9/295).

After a couple of early scalps - hard earned by Lee Diston (2/48) and Nathan Lambden (1/7) the Swans struggled to restrict the opposition any further.

Lambden was restricted to four overs first up - where he skittled opener Mark Phelan (4) - but his absence from the attack made life all the more difficult for the young Swans.

Brendan Rose (2/76), Diston, Jackson Fry (2/42) and James Seymour (1/41) were left to burden the bowling duties in Lambden’s absence.

For Casey, the main problem arose at number four in the form of Nicholas Ross (114). From 2/12 when he arrived, Ross departed at 6/250 and completely stole the show as the hosts were left to scramble for scalps. Jayden Borg (66) kept the tempo ticking along as well.

Seymour has a chance to notch 700 runs for the season if he can make 19 in the last knock of the year.

WITH pride on the line, Dandenong (252) stood tall against Greenvale. Finals pressure is on

By RUSSELL BENNETT WGCA PREMIER DIVISION PREVIEW - SEMI FINALS MERINDA Park Premier skipper Danny Diwell summed it up best when interviewed by the News in the lead-up to this weekend’s door-die semi-finals.

“They well and truly deserve to be favourites - they’ve been the dominant side all year,” he said of the so far undefeated Pakenham, the Cobras’ opponents this weekend.

“But finals cricket is a funny game, and a different game.

“People say they don’t feel pressure and just play their natural games, but that doesn’t happen.”

“Finals separate the great players from the good players.”

That, in a nutshell, sums up the situation in this game. Pakenham has been the class of the competition all season, with great depth with either bat or ball in hand. They’re the red-hot favourites who’ve comfortably defeated Merinda Park twice already this season. But none of that means anything now. Not really.

“Everyone is on a clean slate now. We get a home final, but it’s still a 22-yard pitch - the same as theirs,” said Pakenham’s inspirational leader Dom Paynter.

“The proof is in the pudding."

When it comes to his own fitness this week, after picking up a nasty thumb injury, Paynter is emphatic.

“I’m playing - I’ll be right,” he said.

“I batted on Saturday and felt good - I didn’t feel any discomfort and the instinct to play naturally was still there,” he said.

“If I don’t score any runs, it (the thumb) is no excuse.”

“You can’t take blokes into a final who aren’t up to it.”

Diwell and his men enter this weekend’s game knowing that, at stages, they did have Pakenham on the ropes at one stage in Round 6.

“We’ll take the positives out of those games (earlier in the season),” he said.

“They were 4/50 at one stage in the first game and we let the foot of the pedal.

“But we need to be consistent with the ball all day.”

Diwell predicted any score around the 200 mark by the side batting first would be particularly tough to chase down, with finals pressure thrown in the mix.

Merinda Park advanced to the finals off the back of an emphatic win over Upper Beaconsfield; while Kooweerup and Cardinia -

who fought it out for the past two premierships - will go head-tohead in the other semi-final after the Demons proved a class above Tooradin.

CRANBOURNE GOLF A LARGE gallery followed the players in the final round of the club championships at Cranbourne Golf Club, on another perfect day for golf.

The crowd was treated to some good scoring and spectacular shot making from all grades.

For the second year in a row, David Micheluzzi has blitzed the field to take out the main trophy. David shot 67, 65, 68, 68 for 268, a ’few’ shots ahead of runner-up Jack Rasmussen who came good in the final two rounds with 80, 82, 69, 73 total of 304.

The final group of the day was completed by Mark Lewfatt (78, 85, 71, 83 = 317) and Chris Turner (81, 83, 76, 80 = 320), who each had their moments across the championships but were out-played by the two young guns in Micheluzzi and Rasmussen.

Jack (Hcp +1) was pipped in A Grade Nett by a single shot by winner Steve Hanlon (9), who shot a very consistent 74, 74, 75 = 224 across the 3 rounds.

CRANBOURNE RSL BOWLS DIVISION 2 Cranbourne RSL 78 defeated Pakenham 77 IN a thrilling encounter the RSL stood tall when it counted the most. There were heroes galore, none better than Wally Ballard’s team who led the fight winning by 17 shots. Ken Hocking's team held the opposition at bay scoring a wonderful draw. Then there were the unsung heroes, Ray Chapman who saved 4 shots on the last end to keep the RSL in the battle. Finally our last team one down on the last end, first it was Ron Hansen then Bill Bradbury who got the shots we needed. Pakenham had the last bowl, but the RSL came out on top. A great way to finish the season defeating the third placed side and laying the foundations for a very good 2016-17 season.

Yvonne van der Wees team were great overcoming a 2-14 scoreline to win 20-19. John Vowles team down 5-16 came back to only lose by one. Steve Hickson’s team won easily 25-10. The RSL once again showing their fighting spirit and never give up attitude, which will serve them well in the coming finals.

Next Saturday 5 March the RSL play Sandringham at home so supporters/members come on down to the RSL and cheer on your team.

Peter Steer and Stuart Martin were a further 2 shots behind on 99 points each.

The 2016 Senior Club Champion is Gary Westwick who had a consistent 83, 81, 81 = 245, from Peter Bywaters (84, 83, 83 = 250) and last year’s winner Stojko Kresojevic (86, 76, 88 = 250). Peter Schonewille and Steve Hanlon were next best with 251 each.

David Micheluzzi also added the 2016 Junior Club Championship to his overflowing resume, with 67, 68, 68 = 203 over Jack Rasmussen 80, 69, 73 = 222. Other impressive Juniors were Jean Lopez (88, 79, 83 = 250), Dalton Crawford (88, 78, 85 = 251) and Robert Taylor (79, 88, 88 = 255).

Junior Stableford was won by Wasim Kaiyum (Hcp 13) with 37, 27, 36 =

100, 1 ahead of Jack (+1), 2 ahead of Jean and 3 ahead of Robert.

The event finished with club captain Michael Dubs presenting trophies to the winners, and then the announcement of the Men’s and Colts Pennant teams for the 2016 season.

Congratulations to all winners and thank you to all players, spectators, officials, staff and especially the volunteers who gave up their time (and in some cases instead of playing themselves) to make this such a successful event.

Parkers survive relegation HAMPTON PARK BOWLS THE excessive heat last Tuesday did no favours for the Hampton Park Division 1 midweek Pennant team.

Their chance of playing finals will need a big win and lucky results from other teams. Division 3 will be in the finals.

The Saturday pennant was an up and down day for the Parkers. Division 1 survived when ninth placed Edithvale missed a win by 1 shot. A win would have relegated Hampton Park Back to Division 2. At Burden Park, Geoff Ampt, Neville Hendrie, Zak Storm and Warwick Hardy drew 20-20, and Mark Paton, John Nunan, Ian Bartlett and Larry Simpson were unlucky to lose 19-21. John Wright, Shane Hardy, Shane Collins and Steve Barnes fought hard but wenty down, 18-26 and Jack Edwards, Andrew Brandolin, Chris Barnes and Laurie Edwards lost 14-34.

Division 3 went to Cheltenham, where a loss caused their relegation back to Division 4. The only winning rink was Heather Naismith, Jim Westwell, Sean McDonald and Peter Hayden 20-12, while Val Moore, Stan Hatch, Ron Beverly and Ken Cobden 15-21, Trevor Harbright, Helen Lambert, Ellen Smith and Chris Hendrie 10-28, and Jaime Lehmann, Marion Battaglia, Toni Sutton and Denise Eastick 17-34 all lost.

Division 6 had the only win for the day, beating top of the ladder Willow Lodge at Pound Road. The win took them well away from any relegation. Welcome win to Cranbourne CRANBOURNE BOWLS THE final round of the home-and-away pennant season was highlighted by a huge 86-shot victory by the number two side over Doncaster at Cranbourne.

SATURDAY Cranbourne side One went down by 13 shots to finalist Mount Waverley with another good victory

by Skip Peter De Lisle and his team of Roger Roscoe, Harry Van Soest and John Stanley who won by 4 shots.

The second side defeated Doncaster in a must win game that did not disappoint with all sides scoring close to 30 points on each rink and giving the opposition no chance of winning with victory by a massive 86 shot win at home and maximum points posted.

Isobel Partington and Lyn Whalley did the damage for skip Fritz Helle to win by 28 shots up while Skip Matt Boltong had a good day winning by 24 shots.

Skip Jeff Parker had to fight hard all day too finally win by 11 shots and an outstanding performance by Frank Male set up a 23 shot win for skip Garry Hunt.

Popular Skip Sofio Raiti got cheers from the crowd for his solo winning performance on his rink by 24 shots which was within reach of opponents Hampton RSL going down finally by only 9 shots

in the end.

In the fourth side Skip Mardy Tankard and his rink of Craig Moore, Lyndsay Coate and Tony Scranton enjoyed the day with a creditable 17 shot win.

After the game Club Captain Jeff Parker summed up the season to the members at the club with his report card.

“Retaining sides in the second and third division after a slow start to the season was a very pleasing result particularly after the sides settled down in their playing positions. This was the aim this year which we will build on next year. The number one side finished just outside of finals which we will be looking for an even better result next year. The second side had many games during the year that they lost by very small margins and winning today by 86 shots would have troubled most teams playing off in the finals. As for the third and fourth sides they will be very competitive in lower divisions next year. We have some exciting new bowlers to the game at the club who should all step up next year.

In summary we have laid the foundations for a very exciting and competitive season next year and we invite and welcome any new members to the club.”

LADIES The ladies had a bye in the last game of the fixture finishing second on the ladder and they are now ready for finals over the next few weeks.

Peugeot adds its allure

By PETER ANDERSON THE 208 range hasn’t exactly set Australian sales charts on fire but has been a fine return to form for the French manufacturer after a couple of duffers.

Its top-of-the-range GTi has, however, got plenty of attention for the most convincing attempt to reboot the beloved 205 GTi. Not everyone wants or can afford that range-topper, however, but with its excellent ride and handling on offer, Peugeot has sent the 208 Allure to finishing school to create the GT Line.

While the 208 range starts at $15,990 with a five-speed manual 60kW Access, the GT-Line weighs in at a GTi-troubling $27,490 (the GTi is $29,990).

The GTi has more power and torque but is a six-speed manual only and will, of course, cost more to run.

The price is almost the same as its French rival Renault’s Clio GT. For this level of spend you get Peugeot’s seven-inch screen powering a sixspeaker stereo, front and rear parking sensors, auto-parking, dual-zone climate control, power windows and folding mirrors, leather steering wheel and handbrake, rear parking sensors, central locking, cruise control with braking function, cloth trim and 16-inch alloy wheels.

Metallic paint is a $990 option and there’s the $1050 option of textured matte paint which Peugeot says is lowmaintenance.

Peugeot 208 goes GTi-lite and is still heaps of fun.

The optional Active City Brake feature at $500 also includes a reversing camera which is $300 on its own.

The GT Line, as the name suggests, is well on its way to looking like a GTi with 16-inch alloys, a lower stance and the tell-tale bodykit and LED daytime running lights.

The grille is flecked with red flashes for an “equaliser” effect and there’s various chrome and red bits to sort the GT from the lower models.

The windscreen is gigantic, soaring up to your forehead (and further if you have the panoramic roof), with the high ceiling delivering a ton of headroom.

Inside space is impressive for such a small car with a decent-sized boot at 311 litres.

The sportier more heavily bolstered seats are still very comfortable with a wide range of adjustment to help you get comfortable behind the i-Cockpit, which consists of high dials and low steering wheel.

As in the 308, the steering wheel is very small indeed so you can see those dials but is off-putting to some. It takes a while to get the position right.

The rear seats are comfortable enough, but the rear seat is tight for leg, knee and shoulder room.

Storage is limited with a pair of small cupholders up front and a bin hidden underneath the rather inconveniently-sited central armrest.

Six airbags, ABS, brake assist, brake force distribution, stability and traction controls and load-limited front seat-belts add up to five ANCAP stars.

The seven-inch screen is bright and clear but is still slow to respond to your inputs and isn’t exactly the last word in ease-of-use or up-to-the minute design.

The screen takes care of not only satnav and stereo but also the full trip computer and climate control.

There’s a lot going on there and it would be fine if the screen wasn’t so slow to respond to your fingers.

The sat-nav is pretty good if not highly-detailed or high resolution and the stereo, once you’ve worked it out, delivers good sound and works more than happily with your Bluetooth or USB-connected phone.

The GT-Line shares the Puretech 1.2 litre turbocharged three cylinder with the Active and Allure.

The triple pumps out 81kW and 205Nm (why not go for 208? Just for laughs?), the stop-start helping with a combined claimed fuel-consumption of 4.5 litres per 100km which is, well, unlikely to be matched seeing we got 8.2 L/100km, admittedly in an especially sticky week in a Sydney summer. The GT-Line reaches 0-100km/h in a leisurely 10.9 seconds, the six-speed transmis-

sion’s shifts fast and smooth.

A standard 208 is close to, if not the benchmark for ride and handling in its class.

The standard GTi is the best riding hot hatch in the world even if it doesn’t have that ultimate handling ability, which few of its owners will ever use, of its Renault, Ford and VW rivals.

The GT Line chassis falls in the middle of the standard and GTi tunes and is all the better for it.

The tauter chassis further sharpens the already-excellent steering and the fast-responding throttle and transmission make the 208 feel a lot more sprightly than its 0-100km/h figures suggests.

The three-cylinder’s growl is as enjoyable as ever and is a good soundtrack to your hard work if you’ve pointed the car down the inevitable winding road.

There’s plenty of grip on offer, way more than the engine could ever overwhelm but at the same time, it’s a terrific amount of fun.

That extra handling ability doesn’t ruin the ride but it does give it an edge, with body roll almost eliminated.

The larger tyres are also a little noisier, but again, if you like a bit of fun, it’s all worth it.

Even if you’re not a petrolhead, the GT Line comes with plenty of useful features but you might just have to ask yourself if $27,490 for a 208 is worth it.
