Pipeline of hope

By KATH GANNAWAY A $6 million proposal to pipe recycled water to growers in the Coldstream/ Gruyere area has been listed as a priority for Federal Government funding.

The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) have identified the project which aims to future proof the Yarra Valley against drought and changing climate as a priority under the National Water Infrastructure Development Fund (NWIDF).

The Coldstream Recycled-water Pipeline - known as CROPS - literally can’t come soon enough for strawberry grower Tony Scardamaglia, and others like him, who are buying mains water just to get their crops to market.

Mr Scardamaglia farms in Wandin and Coldstream and his uncle also has a strawberry farm just up the road in Gruyere.

Coming out of a dry spring and a hot December, they are all struggling to keep water up to the millions of strawberry plants that not only supply supermarket shelves, but keep hundreds of people in jobs.

Standing on the cracked clay beach of his nearly empty dam, Mr Scardamaglia looks across at the water bubbling in from the same supply, and at the same cost, that provides drinking water to the nearby housing estate.

“I would say nearly everyone would be on mains water by now,” he said.

“I’m going through at least $1000 a day, maybe a couple of thousand; if they go without water for two days, they’re done.”

Asked how that affected the bottom line, he said he would probably end up losing money this season.

It’s not even a balancing act. Mr Scardamaglia said even if it was an option to just stop watering, there were issues with potential disease, maintaining the plants for next season, and looking after his workers.

“Basically, right now I’m just doing it to keep my workers,” Mr Scar-

“If I lose them this season, I may not get them back next season.”

The Coldstream Recycled-water Pipeline (CROPS) is being promoted as a partnership between local growers, who will be customers of the scheme, and regional agencies.

It would supply 1000 megalitres of recycled water from Yarra Valley Water’s plant at Lilydale through a 20-kilometre pipeline to 20 growers who are leading strawberry and wine industry

employers in the region.

Some of the benefits identified in a pre-feasibility study included greater water security which would protect existing jobs and provide investor confidence to promote new jobs, as well as increasing growers’ confidence to sign long-term export contracts which are currently restricted by the uncertainty of rainfall.

Violi, said the idea for a pipeline that would upgrade sewerage farm water had first been mooted around 10 years ago, but went nowhere.

He said the water would come from the sewage farm in Lilydale and would need to be filtered to a very high standard.

“Nothing less than class A is needed for this type of project and the plant would have to be upgraded to filter it to that class,” he said.

amples of where this type of solution to uncertain water supply had worked.

If DEWLP were successful in obtaining the NWIDF funding, a full feasibility would be undertaken to look at the best methods of construction, environmental impacts, cost and other aspects.

Tom Ayres: a man admired and respected

“Tubby Dennehy went up to the coach ... think it was Wally McKenzie, at three-quarter time and asked if he could give the players some champagne.

“Wally apparently didn’t have any better ideas at the time so allowed it.

“The Bloods won the game and at the end Uncle Tom was so fired up he wanted to keep playing.

“He reckons it worked better than any Gatorade concoction used today ... ” The anecdote by Tom Ayres’ nephew, Andrew Peters, was one of many word pictures of Tom’s sporting and family life that were shared at the service to farewell the greatly respected and loved sportsman - and gentleman - at the Healesville Football Club on 8 February.

Thomas Robert Ayres was born on 9 September, 1928, the youngest of Albert and Agnes Ayres’ five children.

The family, including siblings Jack, Glad, Lou and Lorna, came to Healesville from Drouin in 1930. His parents had run the general store in Drouin, but the Depression hit them hard and Albert took up working in the bush in the

Andrew, paying tribute on behalf of the football club, also mentioned Tom’s Life Membership. Footy was his great love and his 30-year career included the 1951, ’54, ’62, ’64 and ’65 premierships.

He and Beryl were regulars at the Don Road oval, with window seats reserved to watch each new generation of Bloods.

He was also a good cricketer, playing in an A Grade premiership with the club in the 1950s.

Robin Sharp paid tribute on behalf of Healesville Bowling Club where Tom had been a member since 1968 and was involved in most of the team premiership and section wins.

He had led the club as president, including in 1991 Centenary Year when he was also made a Life Member, was club champion eight times as recently as 2013, and Champion of Champion in the Yarra Valley Bowling Association, Section 3, three times.

As always, he put in. He was Greens Director, on various committees and on the Pennant selection committees, YVBA delegate, bar volunteer and attended numerous working bees.

Tom stayed long enough at Healesville State School to get his Merit Certificate and joined his father and brother, Jack, in the bush at 13.

Young, fit and strong, he was a natural at wood chopping and competed all over Victoria at country shows, the Royal Melbourne Show, in New Zealand and was a regular on the World of Sports where he came away on one occasion with a one-hundred pound prize.

It bought Tom and his young wife Beryl’s first fridge.

Beryl and Tom met at the tennis club and Tom partnered the young beauty at her debutante ball.

He proposed coming home from a dance at the Healesville Memorial Hall - Beryl had taught Tom to dance and it was one of many interests they shared over their lifetime together - dancing, golf, football, bowls and, later, travel.

They married on 15 December, 1951 in Healesville and had two children, Robert in 1953, and Leanne in 1955.

The home they shared for 49 years in Don Road was built from handpicked trees which were milled at the Narbethong saw mill that he and Jack owned at the time.

would miss Tom, and miss Beryl’s “Good shot Love”, usually mimicked by several other bowlers when Tom put in a good shot.

Robert and Leanne paid tribute to their father, along with the grandchildren, of whom Tom was so proud.

Robert spoke of the road trips they shared to places as far north as Darwin and south to Tasmania and the trips to China and Thailand, and of their ‘bucket list’ including a trip to the West and fishing in his boat which he said would be completed in his memory.

Leanne read the final chapter of her six episode dialogue, “Conversations with my father”.

“This conversation has no dialogue dad, just me talking to you ... an Ode to You Dad,” she said.

She touched on many of the simple,

everyday things that made their relationship special - his ‘popping in’ for coffee and whatever had come from the oven - loved fruit cake - declaring whatever it was as “bloody nice”.

Impromptu visits to family and friends, watching the grandchildren and great-grandchildren playing sport, a great role model who was admired, loved and respected.

She said her father was her best friend ... “a man amongst men”.

Tom had a great love of his football and bowling clubs and club members formed a guard of honour at the service as family and friends said their final goodbyes.

Tom Ayres passed away on 1 February, 2016. He will be missed and remembered with great affection by his family and many friends.

Ambo branch raring to go

By JESSE GRAHAM HEALESVILLE will have a new Ambulance Victoria branch by the second half of the year, with construction underway and a slab set to be laid this week.

The new branch, which was announced in late 2014 by Eildon MP Cindy McLeish, began construction recently, with a goal of running two crews out of the Westmount Road headquarters by August.

When the Mail visited the site with Ms McLeish on Friday 26 February, workers were levelling the site and Metcalfe Reidy builder, Peter O’Heare, said the concrete slab would be laid in the coming week.

He said the branch was expected to be completed by August.

Ambulance Victoria’s Metropolitan East regional director Cath Anderson said the new branch would replace one that had sat on the site since 1977.

“The new facility will be purpose built, and feature a training room, drive-through garage and improved amenities and rest areas,” Ms Anderson said.

She said that, during construction, a 24-hour ambulance crew was based out of the Chum Creek CFA station and that a 12-hour, peak-period unit

named Coldstream had been based from Lilydale since 2014.

The two crews, and a senior team manager, will be based at the Healesville branch once it is complete.

“We know our paramedics are excited about the new Healesville branch, and looking forward to starting work there.”

Ms McLeish said she was excited about the construction getting underway, and noted that the finished branch would be just metres away from the Healesville and District Hospital, which was being redeveloped.

She said she hoped that having the two ambulance crews operating from the branch would improve response times in the Yarra Valley.

“Obviously, the growth and the number of incidents is the reason why there’s been an increase in ambulance hours,” she said.

“Having that second crew down at Lilydale or Coldstream is still 20 minutes away - if one vehicle is tied up, then you’ve got another in the valley that’s closer.

“I don’t think it’ll just help Healesville, I think it’ll help the wider valley.”

Grand plan for Healesville’s next half-century

The Yarra Ranges Council is asking residents to have their say in the final step for the Draft Healesville Structure Plan, which has been put out for submissions until mid-March.

The draft plan details strategies and actions the council plans to take around the Healesville area into the future, and is the result of more than a year of consultations, community meetings and submissions.

Ryrie ward councillor, Fiona McAllister, said that groups in town were looking “really closely” at the document, which recommends projects such as a redevelopment of the town’s outdoor pool into an aquatic centre, and a bike trail connecting to Warburton and Lilydale.

Cr McAllister said she hoped the draft reflected the “community voice” expressed through consultations, and urged residents to look at the document with the future in mind.

The plan noted that Healesville needs to accommodate an extra 12,300 square metres of “activity space” in the next 20 years, and discusses options such as a new supermarket for the town.

“The establishment of a new smallto-medium supermarket would meet current unmet retail demand,” it read.

“An additional larger supermarket ... could be accommodated in the longer term to meet anticipated demand, but would cause significant disruption to existing food and grocery shops in the short term.”

Suggestions such as encouraging Parks Victoria to upgrade its facilities at the Maroondah Dam, and considering actions to recognise Indigenous history in the town’s main centre are also listed in the plan.

Cr McAllister said the document was not an action plan for the town, but was a “blueprint” for every strategy and action that council makes in the town.

By KATH GANNAWAY CANDY, the 34-year-old Hoddles Creek horse that was at the centre of a dramatic rescue last year, has gone to the big paddock in the sky.

Candy was given very little chance of pulling through when she was found lying on the cold ground, her legs caught up in fallen tree branches and vines on a cold, wet evening in May last year.

The alarm was raised by owners Mitchell Farmer and his mother Dorothy when she didn’t show up for her daily pat and bucket of feed.

She was discovered in a bad way, cold, frightened and on a

steep, slippery slope.

The Upper Yarra SES and local community members joined them, along with equine veterinarian Dr Simon Bray, to get her back on her feet, and she responded beautifully.

The process was technically and physically super challenging, but no-one, least of all Candy was willing to give up, and it paid off.

SES volunteer Russell Wulf, a farrier, said he was regularly asked about Candy and how she was getting on.

Dr Bray described Candy at the time as “a real battler”, a characteristic that one of Candy’s carers, Sarah Marshall,

said described her brilliantly right up until last week when the decision was made to end her suffering.

Sarah said in human years she would have been over 100.

“She had progressed really well after the rescue, but the harsh winter took its toll.

“She had been well looked after, very loved, but was really struggling.

“Between all of us, we made the kind decision for her,” she said.

Dr Bray was called in, once again, and Sarah said she “left this earth peacefully and while she still had some pride and dignity left”.

THE State Government has appointed a new board to look at the future operation of Lake Mountain and Baw Baw alpine resorts.

The change to the board and management follows a Victorian Auditor-General’s Office Report on the 2014 operation of the resorts that found that the respective boards had not maintained adequate oversight, internal control and legislative compliance of the financial operations.

Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Water Lisa Neville announced in December that outsourcing of management to Belgravia Leisure would finish in April and be replaced with a new board.

She said her office took the issues raised by the AuditorGeneral seriously and that the alpine boards had been advised that governance and risk management had to improve.

Among a number of concerns raised in the report, were breaches of the Financial Management Act, and deficiencies

in the monthly reconciliation of key financial balances.

“The reconciliations prepared were not independently reviewed, not completed in a timely manner and not supported by adequate documentation,” the report said.

Belgravia has defended its operation of the resorts, however, with CEO Nick Cox saying Belgrave Leisure was proud of its achievements.

“Belgrave Leisure invested heavily to update and improve the financial systems and processes.

He said a number of the issues identified in the 2014 audit were ‘legacy issues’ that predated Belgravia’s involvement.

“The results can be seen in the most recent FY15 audits which were completed with no major non-compliance issues and will result in the on-time tabling in Parliament of the resorts' annual reports in the coming month,” Mr Cox said.

Ms Neville said the new boards would now work with stakeholders to determine the preferred future of the small

alpine resorts to address a future that must be environmentally and economically sustainable taking into consideration the likely impacts of climate change.

“These alpine resorts are significant to some of our regional economies and I want to make sure they remain viable and sustainable into the future,” she said.

Board chair for Lake Mountain and Mount Baw Baw Allan Bawden said it was now up to the board to come up with a long-term plan on how to build on what the resorts offered, particularly in the summer season.

“For the first time we are also seeing the government recognising that climate change could mean some changes to alpine resorts in the future, so the government will be funding some research to help boards understand what that means in the future,” Mr Bawden said.

In the meantime, he said it would be “business as usual” at the resorts with management and staff focused on being prepared for the next winter season.

Where’s the women, Tony? Waste move may work AND they say the Liberal Party has a problem with women.

In the recent circular from Tony Smith highlighting his meet and greets within the electorate, he is photographed with 23 men compared with only two women (not including minors or his own family).

Does he know that he represents the women of his electorate, too - or indeed that they exist?

Tip passes better option I REFER to your story in the Mail on hard rubbish collection (‘Hard to refuse’, 16 February).

I agree, and I have said it for years, that hard rubbish is an eyesore at a time when we have many tourists, but also an eyesore for the residents.

Why can’t we have two free tip passes per year that expire after a certain date and are not transferable?

We would have to prove that we live at that address, using a licence or rate notice etc.

How on Earth would taking your own rubbish to the tip be over double the price compared to contractors picking it up from the side of the road, as stated in the article by (Yarra Ranges Shire, Director Environment and Engineering) Mark Vermalis.

Even if it worked out the same price (which I doubt), it would surely be a more attractive solution and be less dangerous because you wouldn’t have to dodge cars that have pulled up while people scrounge through the hard garbage.

I don’t think some people realise that it is free to dump steel or metal of any type at the tip as there is a lot left out for hard rubbish, or is it because it’s far easier for them to wait for hard rubbish day?

I realise many people don’t have trailers but surely they could borrow one, or maybe a ute.

Maybe council could help out in some way or by changing their tip passes to booking a hard garbage pick-up like they do down the line.

Also, some people think that it is their right to put out as much rubbish as they want to because they pay for it in their rates.

If everyone has this attitude, and it was true, then God knows how much our rates would go up to accommodate this with the prices they charge at the tip since it has been privatised.

I COULDN'T agree more with moving the hard waste collection to a different time of the year.

I always thought it strange to have rubbish sitting on the nature strips for some time over our fire danger period (just more to potentially catch on fire).

Yes, it is an eyesore.

Especially loads of rubbish, in front of the units, as you come into town, via Maroondah Highway, through our beautiful Avenue of Honour.

Not a good look for any visitors to our town.

When we first moved to Chum Creek (about 24 years ago), we had two hard garbage collections which from memory were around March or April, and November.

A refugee role FORMER Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, committed Australia to taking an additional 12,000 refugees over and above others already being processed: from women, children and ‘endangered minorities’ sheltering inside the temporary aid camps along the edge of the Syrian conflict.

The number 12,000 is about the same size as Healesville’s population; and some people may see a connection with several religious, ethnic and other minorities who exist here surrounded by a dominant secular, pluralistic and economically strong Australia.

Do any of our local minorities have a similar cluster name or social classification as some of the Syrian refugees?

Does the township version of ‘Christian’ and ‘ethnic minority’ match the lifestyle, practice and beliefs of displaced people being persecuted and forced to convert or face beheading?

Will local humanitarian action suffice in permanent refugee resettlement?

Victoria is set to receive 4000 refugees over 12 months.

How many of these have arrived?

Where are they?

How many will Yarra Ranges Council and non-government agencies house in Yarra Glen, Healesville, Coldstream and Kinglake?

What role, if any, will local churches, charities and indigenous groups have in determining who can settle?

Are Syrian and African refugees even welcome here?

By KATH GANNAWAY NETBALL and tennis across the Yarra Ranges have scored well out of the Federal Government’s Stronger Communities funding program.

Following consultation with a committee of local sports club representatives, Casey MP, Tony Smith, said a number of projects that encouraged female and youth participation in sport were recommended as priorities.

Mr Smith said he believed that female sports did not receive enough recognition or funding.

“Our female athletes are high achievers and strong performers who deserve to have great facilities to train and compete on.

“As such, I was very pleased that six netball facilities, in Powelltown, Yarra Junction, Woori Yallock, Seville, Monbulk, and Montrose, were successful in obtaining funding for court resurfacing or shelter construction, as well as the Yarra Glen Tennis Club for new Hot Shots courts for junior players,” Mr Smith said.

Woori Yallock and Yarra Glen will receive $20,000, Powelltown, Yarra Junction, Seville, and Monbulk, $18,000 each and Montrose, $14,660.

He thanked the committee, Brett Whelan, Toni Madden, Caroline Evans, and Blake Hadlow for their assistance in recommending the priority local projects, and Yarra Ranges Council who will match the funds and oversee the projects.

HEALESVILLE’S Soccer and Netball clubs will have a new home in the coming months, with construction underway for a new pavilion at the Don Road Sporting Complex.

The new pavilion, which will be shared by the soccer and netball clubs, is currently under construction at the sporting complex, and is expected to be completed in in August.

Healesville Soccer Club president, Nick Caloutas, said the pavilion would help the clubs for events and membership, with men’s and women’s changing rooms, a social room and a canteen.

Currently, Mr Caloutas said the Healesville Football Club allowed clubs the use of their change rooms and facilities, also located at the complex - though this has problems when football games are held at the same time.

The club also uses small portable buildings next to the courts, but Mr Caloutas said the new, $1.6 million pavilion would have all the facilities needed under one roof.

“We’ll finally have a home after all these years,” he said.

He said that morale in the club had improved since works began, and that he hoped having proper facilities could attract new members.

“The general consensus by the people involved with the soccer club, and even the players, to see the works starting now, it’s a great vibe,” he said.

“We’ve got a lot more numbers that have shown interest, that they want to play soccer now.

Healesville Football and Netball Club vice president, Kym EstcourtBarclay, said agreed with Mr Caloutas and said the new facilities would help the netballers.

She said there would be four change rooms - two for the soccer club and two for the netballers once the building was completed, as well as shower facilities and a firstaid room.

Ms Estcourt said that, currently, players had to go home to shower - which was a problem after winter

games when they get soaked during games.

“It’s going to be great for us girls through the season, but it’s also going to be really cool, come finals time,” Ms Estcourt-Barclay said.

“We’re really excited - it’s going to be great when it’s all finished.”

Mr Caloutas said he expected the membership at the club to “multiply” once the building was finished.

Funding for the pavilion came in the form of $500,000 from Casey MP Tony Smith, $100,000 from the Victorian Government and $1 million from the Yarra Ranges Council.

of Environment and Engineering, Mark Varmalis, said the new pavilion will provide “accessible, high quality sport and recreation facilities” for the community.

“The facilities will include unisex change facilities for up to six teams, umpire change rooms and amenities, first aid room, storage, kitchen/canteen, social rooms and viewing areas.”

FORMER Yarra Ranges Citizen of the Year, Irene Munsey, has been commemorated in a book released on 7 February at Millgrove.

More than 100 people attended the launch by Yarra Ranges Council’s Cr Jim Child of ‘Living a Life of Love in and for the World’, a brief biography of the life of the late Irene Munsey.

Miss Munsey, who passed away 10 years ago, was a member of the Mariana Community and a much-loved and respected Maternal and Child Health Nurse in the Upper Yarra area for many years.

In the introduction to the book, author Anne Rennie said that in honouring her well-lived life ... “we are reminded of the honest, decent and upright women who look beyond themselves and give unstintingly to others”.

Representing local families, Maria Mithen said Irene started playgroups, connected people and supported the new mums in an encouraging, down to earth, motherly way.

Cr Child spoke at the launch of the contribution that Miss Munsey made in the Upper Yarra area.

He said people of his generation, who were having children and raising their families in the area during her time as maternal health nurse, had an absolute relationship with Miss Munsey.

“She was the most caring and thoughtful person, absolutely dedicated to her profession,” he said.

She was named Yarra Ranges’ Citizen of the Year in 2004, and received a posthumous Mayor’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005.

Launch organiser, Kath Curtain, said the event was a wonderful tribute with family members, colleagues and community members attending.

stories floating around including grateful mothers who had their fractious babies settled by Irene,” she said.

More than 200 books were handed out on the day and copies made available to historical societies and libraries.

I was chuffed that Sarah had taken the time to write a beautiful letter.

Sarah - as a child, and her

then family - were extremely pivotal in helping me to get my music endeavours up and running.

The family always supported me, especially during a personally distressing time for me; and Sarah’s dad, Clive White, often filled in or accompanied me when the girls were playing.

I guess the feelings between us are reciprocal and I’d like to say a huge ‘thankyou’ to the White family.

Without them, the whole concept would have just faded away and “the marimba belles" never existed.

Plumpton Training Services was founded in 1994. Our training facility in Mackay has several courses running constantly with four trainers, and two in the field providing onsite training. Our courses meet the Australian Standards, predominantly, Electrical training to Electrical Engineers and Electricians in the Coal Industry, and metalliferous mining, both underground and surface to Rio Tinto, BHP, BMA, Oil, and Gas in Australia and overseas. Currently we are training in off shore oil in South Korea, all so training in Electrical Equipment for Explosive Atmospheres.

We also provide Risk Assessments for Coal Mines, Hospitals, Defence Forces, Sugar Mills, Fertilizer Companies and all Distilleries.

Being President of the Rotary Club of Healesville and working keeps me very active and busy, though I have to say is very rewarding, as doing community work is one of my passions. Quilts to cushion pain

By JESSE GRAHAM QUILT lovers of all kinds will have two days to indulge in the annual Patchwork Collections Friendship Group Quilt Show at Coldstream’s Wallace Gardens later this month.

The show will be held from 10am-4pm on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 March at the gardens, with quilts for sale and Devonshire teas to enjoy.

Group member Bev Buziko said the event would raise money for quilt materials, with the subsequent quilts donated to the Royal Children’s Hospital.

“We make very bright and happy quilts for the very sick children,” she said.

She said the event started shortly after Black Saturday, when the group, made up of Toolangi and Yarra Valleybased quilters helped to organise donations of 6000 quilts to fire-affected communities.

Since then, the show has been run each year as a fundraiser to help make quilts for the hospital and the children and teenagers undergoing treatment there.

Visitors will be able to take

part in a raffle for a “beautiful” quilt, according to Ms Buziko, along with other prizes, and can buy their own quilting materials from a half price table.

She said she hoped to donate about 90 quilts to the hospital after the event.

The Patchwork Collections Friendship Group Quilt Show will be held at Coldstream’s Wallace Gardens, 7 Maddens Lane, Coldstream, from 10am4pm on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 March.

WE’VE mostly covered the big Oscar contenders (which arrive frustratingly late to our shores) in the new year, so let’s return to the present with 2016’s first big box-office hit.

Deadpool is a gloriously irreverent, ridiculous experience with surprising heart.

Based on the Marvel comics series, the film follows Wade Wilson/Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds), a wisecracking former mercenary who gains super-healing abilities from

unethical experimentation.

Ryan Reynolds is clearly having a blast playing Deadpool (which was reportedly a dream role for him), delivering lightning-fast comedic timing and brilliant chemistry with his co-stars.

Deadpool has crammed full of vulgar humour and fourth wall-breaking gags, but don’t let that put you off. The film cleverly pokes fun at superhero values, the genre’s recent dark and gritty trend, studio politics and even its own exaggerated silliness, and succeeds impressively (where most others fail dismally) in being intelligently vulgar, and charmingly self-

referential without being insufferable.

Moreover, the plot is anchored by a heartwarming relationship between Wade and his girlfriend Vanessa (Morena Baccarin). Ajax (Ed Skrein) is a highly intimidating villain, and the action is energetic, gruesomely creative and expertly choreographed.

Last year’s Jupiter Ascending was entirely style (and still wonderful), but Deadpool has plenty of satirical substance and emotionally engaging storytelling.

Deadpool is the best mess to come out of Hollywood in years.

YOUNG Yarra Ranges residents are being asked to share what’s important to them and take a dip for a night of entertainment in Yarra Junction later this month.

Interchange Outer East (IOE) will be hosting a Dive In Cinema event at the Yarra Centre on Saturday 19 March for people aged 12-26.

IOE’s Heather Sayer said the event would feature a “giant’ outdoor cinema, a photobooth and a silent disco, as well as the premiere of Speak Up, Speak Out - a film made by The MISFIT Project, a social enterprise branch-off of MISFIT Theatre in the Upper Yarra area.

The film will feature young people talking about issues that matter to them, filmed at a workshop being held on Saturday 5 March, from 1pm-7pm at 18-20 Cavanagh Road, Millgrove.

Ms Sayer said the event was being organised and developed by young people, who would have the choice over what movie was screened on the night - as long as it has a G or PG rating.

“We’re trying to use as much youth expertise in the planning and development of it as we

“It’s a great platform for youth to have their voices heard.

By JAMIE STRUDLEY YARRA Ranges Athletics club athletes competed at the Victorian Open Track and Field Championships, held at Lakeside Stadium over the weekend.

Lochie Scully ran a brave 1500m heat, finishing 13th in 4:15.51s and Lucas Taylor finished 7th in the men’s hammer throw with a throw of 32.19m.

The Athletics Victoria Knockout final for U14s-U20s athletes was held in conjunction with the Open Championships.

Entry is restricted to the top 8 ranked athletes in each event and age grade.

Jostling for the top four

By IAN HARLEY IN brilliant cricketing conditions, the jostling for finals positions intensified in the penultimate round of the DJ Strachan Shield season in the Yarra Valley Cricket Association.

Yarra Junction almost assured their position in the top four, Mount Evelyn pressed to stay in the finals race with an impressive victory, while Warburton-Millgrove and Healesville fought out a classic as they tussled for a toptwo position.

Warburton-Millgrove posted an impressive 257 on day one of their clash with Healesville and entered day two with their noses well and truly in front of this contest.

Although wary that the chase would’ve been a difficult one, Healesville would have been well aware the Mac Spark Oval has produced some big scores in recent weeks; therefore, giving them confidence that with a good start, anything could be possible.

Both teams fired some early shots in an action-packed beginning on day two, but Warburton-Millgrove looked well on top with Healesville stumbling to 3/30 courtesy of some excellent bowling from Andrew Hoare (2/21).

Ash Hamer joined his brother Scott at the wicket, with the pair setting themselves to get their team back in the contest.

With Ash the aggressor, and Scott holding his own at the other end, the pair put on a spritely 69-run partnership in quick time and had the Burras searching for answers.

Experienced pair of Mick Walker and Daniel Lever pulled the reins on the Bloods’ express; and their pair of strikes before the tea break had the home team still in control of the contest with the visitors teetering at 5/134.

Ash Hamer has been in brilliant form in recent weeks; and while he was at the wicket, the Bloods were still a massive chance of chasing down the total.

With a flourish of boundaries (15 4s and three 6s), and another reliable partner in Ben Wallace, Hamer was again steaming towards another impressive century.

With Daniel Lever still plugging away with his disciplined spin, he was able to break through the partnership and claim the vital wicket of Hamer for a brilliant 111.

With the rate at which he scored, the Bloods were left with 80 runs to score with just short of 30 overs left.

This left the contest in an interesting balance, and the battle between Lever (4/44), Walker (2/59) and the Bloods tail entertained right to the close.

Experience was the big winner; and with wickets falling regularly, the innings was wrapped up 23 runs short of the target, despite some dogged late order batting.

The win all-but locks in WarburtonMillgrove in second place on the ladder, with an assured home semi-final.

The Burra just need a victory against Hoddles Creek to secure their position and give themselves a leg up in the quest for another grand final appearance.

On the other hand, Healesville have another cracking contest ahead with the final-round match-up against Yarra Junction.

This contest promises to be match of the round as Yarra Junction chase the final position in the finals race.

Yarra Junction just fell short in their quest to take outright points against Seville, taking the last round out of the equation.

Yarra Junction were dominant on day one, so much so that they had secured first innings points by the close of the day with eight wickets in hand.

The Eagles decided to bat on in the quest for quick runs to set up their chase of the ultimate victory.

Some disciplined bowling from the Blues, in particular led by their captain Andy Kay (4/21), ensured they wouldn’t be blown out of the water; and they fought hard to dismiss the home side for 136.

After being rolled for 65 on day one, the visitors would still have their work cut out to keep the Eagles out.

Young gun opening bowler Jesse Cook (3/14) ensured his team would start on the right foot as his early strikes had the Blues on the hop early.

What followed was some dogged ‘to-ing’ and ‘fro-ing’ from both sides.

In the quest for outright points, the fielding side are always battling two factors: runs and time.

The Seville batsmen were still able to keep the score ticking over while absorbing some vital overs.

Yarra Junction persisted and almost squeezed through for a memorable outright victory; however, they fell short by a couple of wickets and with Seville passing their target of safety late in the day, the Eagles spirited challenge ended.

Although well beaten, the young

Seville team would be proud they didn’t succumb for a second week.

Yarra Junction have found their ‘mojo’ in recent weeks after nearly fluffing their finals position after Christmas and will be eagerly anticipating their final round clash with Healesville.

The equation is simple for the Eagles: win and they will return to finals action, while a loss would consign them to some soul searching after another missed opportunity.

Mount Evelyn will be watching the Yarra Junction and Healesville game with much anticipation as their destiny is no longer in their hands.

They will secure full points in the final round courtesy of the bye and they will be hoping for a Healesville victory.

They did what they needed to do to stay in the hunt with a comprehensive victory over Hoddles Creek.

After making an imposing 299 on day one, Mount Evelyn made the best start possible with a couple of early breakthroughs.

However, it was Hoddles Creek making the best of the early going; and with Jeremy Derix (33) mixing some watchful defence with some fluent stroke-play, the Wombats had set themselves at 2/53.

Michael Robinson joined Derix at the wicket, with the pair soaking up some valuable overs as Mount Evelyn were sensing a dash at outright points.

With the pair looking comfortable in defence, the ball was thrown to Jed Thompson in an attempt to see if taking the pace off the ball would have an effect.

That it did; with an excellent spell of accurate and controlled spin bowling, Thompson reignited the Rovers quest for quick wickets.

His five wickets either side of the tea break had the home team in touch of some valuable overs in which to attack outright points.

Despite their lowly rankings in recent seasons, Hoddles Creek have been known for their dogged defiance with the bat; and youngster Daniel Chesney showed composure beyond his years as he guided his team through some valuable overs at the end of their first innings.

With Mount Evelyn electing to have a chase at outright points, he opened the second innings with aplomb; and although he didn’t contribute much to the scoreboard, his value wouldn’t be overlooked as he left the Mount Evelyn

bowlers bereft of solutions.

Kane Jones (3/21) did his best to support Thompson in the chase of quick wickets and despite being unable to make an impression in the second innings, the Rovers executed their plans to restrict the visitors to 115.

Three teams in final contention WARBURTON BOWLS ALL three Saturday Pennant teams won to confirm their respective positions in the finals series starting this week which is a wonderful achievement for such a small club. Good luck to all teams!

Warburton 1 played Chirnside Park away and won 102 to 57, with all rinks winning. They play Blackburn at home in the semi-final this week.

Warburton 2 played Heathmont at home and won 92 to 48 with three rinks up. Rink scores were as follows: G. Wynd 24/6; S. Mahoney 24/15; M. Brennan 16/17 and P. McConachy 28/10.

They play the top side, Lilydale, away in this week’s semi-final.

Warburton 3 played Glen Waverley away and won comfortably 57 to 31 with

all rinks winning. They play Dandenong RSL Rec away in the semi-final this week.

The Tuesday Pennant side played the top side Heathmont at home and recorded a great victory to keep their finals chance alive.

Scores: 67 to 59. Rink scores were: R. McKail 19/18, G. Walsh 21/22, R. Zunneberg 27/19. They play Mooroolbark away this week in a must-win game before the finals.

The Wednesday Night Barefoot Bowls Competition concluded two weeks ago.

This set up an extremely exciting final with the scores level after the eight ends. After an extra end, RBTT 6 d Tail Enders 5, Thanks to a great final shot by Travis Appleton to push his first bowl in for shot. Congratulations Travis. Rex wins on countback WARBURTON GOLF WEDNESDAY, 24 February - Stableford: Winner was Rex Ryan with a wellcompiled 41 points. Noel Cross was the runner-up, on a countback, with 40. The balls went down to 36. NTP winners were Mario De Vincentis 3rd, Dave Waters 10th and Steuart Hawke (15th).

Twilight this week saw the field tackling the front nine. The winner, after an amazing seven-way countback, was Steuart Hawke with 20 points. There were many runners-up, but the declared

one was Malcolm Dickson. The balls only went down to 18. NTPs went to Ossie McClay 3rd, Jason Kennedy 6th and Hatty on the 9th.

Saturday, 27 February: After the annual general meeting, the players participated in the annual President’s/Captain’s Day. The President’s team won on the day. Individually, the winning pair from the two-person Ambrose were Danny Fox and Geoff Fall, with a most impressive Nett 61.25. Runners-up were Gary Ward and Craig Staggard, with 61.50.

The ball run-down saw teams down to 64.50. NTPs went to Patricia Eldridge 3rd, Geoff Fall 5th, Shane Campbell 9th, Mike Plant 12th and ‘Bazza’ on the 15th.

Finally, the outgoing President, Ron Hottes, would like to publically thank all those members who supported him over the past three terms of office, and especially to the various committees he has worked with.

Tahn’s a top performer HEALESVILLE Gymnastics Centre have paid tribute to their gymnast of the year for 2015, and are gearing up for another year on the beams ahead of the Brazil Olympics.

The gymnastics centre celebrated the end of the year with its annual presentation night in early December, with gymnasts performing routines to their families and friends.

Director, Dru Troon, wrote that Tahn Innes-Mason was

named as the centre’s gymnast of the year.

Ms Troon aid that Tahn had completed an “energetic year", with new skills learned and levels passed.

The centre will be introducing a new Gymstar program for the year, and Ms Troon said the year will be great for gymnasts, particularly in the lead-up to Brazil’s Olympic games.

Motoring Teamwork is tested

By KATH GANNAWAY A GROUP of Upper Yarra Secondary College students tested their teamwork skills last weekend during round three of the 2016 Victorian HPV (Human Powered Vehicle) Series at Casey Fields, Cranbourne, competing against more than 100 school teams.

Seven students were involved in the junior team, who were hoping to improve on their sixth place in their last meet.

Hosted by the Casey Cardinia Cycling and Human Powered Vehicle Club, the challenge tests the ingenuity, teamwork and physical fitness of the competitors, while promoting sustainable energy practices.

Student Katie said the group went well, although they were involved in an accident early in the event, which put them off the road briefly.

Fortunately, they were able to get the vehicle back on the road and finish the race, notching up some really good laps.

Unfortunately, they didn’t place, but the team was pleased with their persistence.

Initially, the HPV project was run as an elective in school hours, but now it is an extra-curricular activity, which requires commitment from students and parents because all races are held on a weekend.

The students said the vehicle had been purchased, not built, although they designed the livery and regularly maintain and improve the vehicle.

Student Ashlee Shotter said it was a great challenge.

“When I first joined the HPV team, I wasn’t sure if it was for me,” she said.

“But once I went to my first race, I knew I would continue with it because it was so fun.”

Team-mate Riley Foy agreed.

“HPV racing is a great challenge, where you have to push yourself physically and be really determined,” he said.

The next meeting is at Knox in April and the group is hoping to have a senior team compete at this event.

Race action returns to speedway

By DEAN THOMPSON ALEXANDRA Speedway club kicks off another four months of action this Saturday night, 5 March.

The meet will mark the continuation of the 2015-'16 season, with the powerful Late Model Sedan division holding their first competitive race meeting at the venue that will in April hold their Victorian title.

Local heroes in club divisions will also be back as they try to gather points for the end-ofseason club point scores.

There will be plenty of entertainment for everybody.

Late Model Sedans will have competitors from local areas with Justin and Cameron Pearson from Healesville, Brock and Chevy Edwards from Eildon, and Tim McPherson from Beveridge.

All will compete at what is their home track with the Edwards and Pearson drivers in particular in the hunt for victory and a psychological advantage before the Victorian title next month.

They will be challenged by many Victorians, and from north of the border, including Todd Bayley and Liam Heaton.

All the National Junior Sedan drivers have returned from Tasmania where they competed in the national and Tasmanian titles just after Christmas and they will resume their battles for club supremacy this weekend.

Ricky Cornwall, Donald Young, Jackson Lunt, Kasey Garlick, Tyler Barton and Wayne Furmston are among some of the challengers for the win this weekend.

A Junior Standard Saloon series round is scheduled to be held with Victorian three through to five in the nominations, Courtney Meakins, Charli Parsons and Kasey Ingram while the top qualifier at the recent Victorian title Ally Morrison is the quickest in the field and is set to be the one the others will be looking to get beat.

Sports Sedans, Unlimited Sedans, Standard Saloons, Ladies Open Sedans, VSC Junior Sedans and Street Stocks are all on the program, This will bring some of the stars of those divisions together to battle, such as the Victorian champion in Sports Sedans Ben Moon, up against Damien Miller, Matt Nelson and Luke Fallon.

Racing starts at 4pm and gate prices for spectators are adults $20, aged and invalid pensioners $15, kids 12-to-16 $10, under 12 are free.
