Three-tree on chopping block have diagnosed the tree as being infected with a root-rotting fungal disease from which it cannot recover. The three-in-one tree, comprising a redgum, a fig and a tuckeroo, sits next to the Royal Mail Hotel in Diyan Street and has been pronounced “nearly dead” and “dangerous” by the independent experts. Work will commence shortly
to remove the tree, and council assures all precautions to protect pedestrians and motorists will be taken during the removal, including potential road closures in the immediate area. “The tree will be removed section by section, taken away and burnt to ensure the disease doesn’t spread to other trees,” Ms Cooke said. The tree has become home to a
number of birds that council says will be sensitively relocated as part of the tree removal process. Council has been installing new nest boxes in nearby parks to provide attractive new homes for the displaced birds. Council said many efforts had been made over the years to make the tree safe, but all options had now been exhausted.

Teen on a furry mission By MEGAN OGLE JONTY Redwood is not your typical 14-year-old; while his friends are surfing, the high school student is busy rallying community support for his online petition he plans to submit to council in the next few months. Jonty is asking council to consider expanding onleash dog areas to the north and south of the Sunshine Beach Surf Club so he can walk Skittles, the family dog, to the off-leash dog beach away from dangerous and congested roads. The off-leash dog beach at the end of Sunshine Beach has limited parking which causes cars to park along small suburban streets, making it difficult for Jonty to walk Skittles safely along Seaview Terrace and adjoining streets. “These days in Noosa we can take our dogs to cafes next [to] where people eat, we can take them to Bunnings so why can’t we walk them along our open public space of the beach?” Jonty said. Noosa Council Community Services director Alan Fox Rogers said Jonty’s petition was a “great example of democracy” and once submitted to council “would be considered fully”. “We would consider the petition and balance the

IN A bid to provide clarity about the future of the Peregian Beach Surf Club, Noosa Heads Surf Club president David James has released a letter outlining the club’s intentions and future plans for the closed site. The letter outlines Noosa Heads Surf Club’s new responsibilities, which include taking on the overall responsibilities of providing volunteer lifesaving patrols at Peregian Beach as well as upgrading the equipment and lower level of the clubhouse. “We have invested in an upgrade of the lifesaving area of the clubhouse, ground level, together with the purchase of new, up-to-date lifesaving equipment including a 4WD utility, an allterrain vehicle, safety signage and upgraded inflatable rescue boats,”
Mr James said. In addition to the maintenance and upgrades of the clubhouse, Mr James said an incorporated program for Nippers was initiated which allowed juniors from both Noosa Heads and Peregian Beach to cross over and train at both beaches. Mr James said the club was working with council to possibly upgrade the public amenities at the Peregian Beach park grounds, which could see the current amenities being removed and attached to the clubhouse but said this was in the early stages. The current deck of the clubhouse is not to an appropriate safety standard, according to Mr James and at present is only used for an overflow of training.

Business friendly candidate PATRICK Lloyd may have been late to the starting gate but he is set to give the council a run for its money in the coming election. Noosa local and owner of Noosa Horses on North Shore, Mr Lloyd said he has joined the electoral race as he doesn’t feel he is being represented by the current council. “I’m a business owner and council doesn’t help businesses to grow, it hinders them,” he said. “Council goes out of the way to be in the way.” Mr Lloyd said the council had the “ground work” to support local businesses but lacked people with “real life experience”. Communication and increased consultation with the community is high on Mr Lloyd’s policies as well as developing local, already-established business.

Where to vote for big day THE Australian Electoral Commission (ECQ) has released the Noosa Shire polling dates and polling booth locations. Polling day is set for Saturday 19 March, with polling booths open between 8am and 6pm in all councils. Pre-poll in person voting in the Noosa region is shorter than other areas with polling booths opening only a week prior to the official polling day. Noosa Shire returning officer Colin Brown said pre-polling for Noosa residents will open Monday 14 March and close Friday 18 March. Voters will be able to vote
Monday to Thursday between 9am and 5pm and Friday between 9am and 6pm. Postal votes are now open until Wednesday 16 March, at 7pm. COUNCIL candidate Brian Stockwell has a beef with factory farming and has vowed to ban the practice if elected to the council next month. Mr Stockwell said factory farming doesn’t fit the “existing Noosa planning philosophy” and banning “inappropriate” intensive animal industries in rural Noosa is achievable through a State Government loop hole. “There is nothing in the State Planning Policy that says that councils must facilitate ‘hard-to-locate’ industries if they are not suitable considering landscape qualities and existing surrounding uses,” Mr Stockwell said. “The State Government planners may try and resist but with the right people on council we can take on this battle at both a professional and a political level.” Mr Stockwell said it was “important” to differentiate between factory farming and intensive animal industries saying one is unsustainable while the other is permitted. “It is important to state that my policy is to ban factory farming throughout the Rural Zone, not all in-
tensive animal industries,” Mr Stockwell said. “Whereas I am confident science can show factory farms, such as broiler farms, are inherently unsustainable, there are other forms of intensive production which can be permitted. “In Noosa we have seen the emergence of free-range, holistic, regenerative farms producing local food in a way that is consistent with the desired objectives of the Rural Zone. “They meet the statutory definition of intensive animal production but don’t constitute an industrialisation of the rural landscape.” Mr Stockwell said that in his previous role as a planner for State Government he has dealt with numerous complaints in regard to factory farms from residents, fishing and indigenous groups and local governments and said it was time to clearly state Noosa’s stance on the issue. “We didn’t say no to all development on the coast, we said no to highrise and it’s time we stated clearly what we want for our rural land uses,” Mr Stockwell said. “It’s time to say no to factory farming.”

Planning scheme needs some work
MAYORAL candidate Sandy Bolton has called for an overhaul of the Noosa planning scheme after an increase in conflicts, non-compliance and court battles. “Increased neighbour and zoning conflict has been evident in both rural residential and industrial zonings,” Cr Bolton said. “Businesses, as a result of a lack of appropriate zoned land, result in non-compliances, and contested applications can result in lengthy and expensive processes for the applicant and council.” Cr Bolton said it was time for an “overhaul” of the planning scheme to accommodate the “changing” needs of the community and to secure the types of “appropriate” development Noosa requires such as affordable housing. According to Cr Bolton, Noosa’s “low scoring” on the socio-economic index means there is a desperate need for affordable accommodation in Noosa, something which she claims hasn’t been addressed in the 20 years she has lived in Noosa. “To provide a home for our hospitality workers, fixed income retirees and our elderly should not be a debate,” she said. However Cr Bolton said the solution to many of these issues came down to zoning. “The answer to these issues is rela-
Cr Bolton says the Noosa planning scheme needs an overhaul. tively simple and can be addressed by incorporating a mixture of new zonings, reallocated zonings and appropriate changes to codes,” she said. “For other issues, the solutions are
a little more complex, and require research into the real needs now and projected future requirements to ensure we have what we need, and where we need it.” Cr Bolton said council have already began to research the needs of the community and is in the process of finalising pre-drafting audits including an agricultural land audit, industrial land uses and new flood mapping to gain a thorough understanding of what residents and businesses need. Cr Bolton said, if elected mayor, she would ensure the plan was delivered in a timely manner, accommodated the community’s expectations and vision and promoted “surety”. “The Noosa Plan needs to enable good development, not promote conflict,” she said. “Residents need to have surety around zonings, so they know what can be done on their property or in their precinct to avoid misunderstandings.” “Places where farmers can grow our food, business can create product, families can play, entertainers can make music and stargazers can enjoy the quiet of the natural bush.” “All this is possible, complex, but totally achievable.”
Candidate call for more on communications NOOSA Council should improve its communications with residents, according to one mayoral candidate. Current councillor Tony Wellington said the area of communication had not received enough attention from the council and should be improved. “One area which I believe has not had the attention it deserves is the communications field,” Cr Wellington said. “There have certainly been times when council could have explained itself better. Council needs to take residents on the journey towards final decision-making, listening as we go.” Cr Wellington said the current council had largely focused on developing a corporate structure since de-amalgamation, to which he praised CEO Brett de Chastel and Mayor Noel Playford for their work in “building a new council from the ground up”, but said some communication by the council had been “clumsy”. “The issue of dogs on Sunshine Beach was a classic example of poorly managed communication,” Cr Wellington said. “More recently, the matter of riverside coffee shops utilising community land has been communicated in a clumsy way.” Cr Wellington said if elected as mayor he would focus more attention on communication with residents and increase community consultation.
“I believe that honesty and transparency are the hallmarks of good governance. But those ideals can’t be achieved without an effective communications system,” he said. “I would like to see greater opportunities for round table discussions, community forums and input from stakeholder groups.” “As mayor I will hold regular meetings with representatives from the various business associations, the Community Biosphere Association, the Residents and Ratepayers Association and other representative groups.” But it’s not only increased communication on Cr Wellington’s agenda - clear messages and less “jargon” are also top priorities. “Council needs to put out clear messages using plain English, not the sort of bureaucratic jargon that council staff are used to speaking,” he said. “But it’s not just about the words, it’s also about timing. Residents don’t like to feel that they’re being consulted after a decision is made.” Cr Wellignton said good communication would come into play as council embarked on the new Noosa town plan. “I want Noosa residents to feel a sense of ownership and pride in their planning scheme. After all, this document will set the ‘look and feel’ for Noosa over the next decade and more.“

Superheroes call the shots IS IT a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s the students of Kin Kin State School here to save the day! Last Friday the students dressed up as their favourite superheroes and patrolled the halls and playgrounds of Kin Kin State School on the lookout for villains. Luckily there were no villains, just a lot of tights, capes, masks and some very original ideas, according to teacher’s aide Miss Stewart. “The Superhero theme was decided by student councillors of our school who are in Years 4 to 6,” Miss Stewart said. “[They] designed the flyers and passed them around to all the Kin Kin students. A gold coin was donated by all the students to raise funds for childhood cancer awareness.” It wasn’t only the students who got into the superhero spirit; staff also donned their favourite capes and masks and had fun doing so, according to Clark Kent, erm, I mean, principal Trent Shaw. “It’s always fun to dress up, be creative and have a laugh at ourselves as well as raise funds for such a worthy cause,” Mr Shaw said.

Stars come out with cash THE stars aligned as local real estate agent Richardson and Wrench Noosa raise much-needed funds for the Starlight Foundation. For the past five years the local business has contributed to the charity, with this year's funds totalling over $2,500. Richardson and Wrench national operations manager Amy Bruce said the R&W group had
raised over $86,801 in 2015 alone, adding to the total funds raised for the charity. “Since the launch of our partnership with Starlight the R&W network has raised an amazing total of $341,801, helping Starlight brighten the lives of over 185,000 sick kids, teens and their families,” Mr Bruce said.

A LOCAL taxi driver has come to the defence of a popular night spot in Noosa Heads, while council considers the fate of the restaurant’s outdoor area. Popular Noosa Heads restaurant Village Bicycles has come under recent scrutiny after various noise complaints from nearby residents have sparked council to consider restrictions on noise and outdoor seating. Resident and taxi driver Len Harris said he agreed with the council’s concerns and possible solutions to the
complaints, including noise buffers and restricted outdoor seating, but said young people’s needs had to be considered. “Workers who work night shift need to relax with friends and not take their work frustrations home,” he said. “It takes some time to unwind and I therefore recommend that every night trading should go to 2am.” Mr Harris said the nightly hot spot was also frequented by backpackers from the nearby hostel and that Village Bicycles provided an opportunity for young people from all over the world
to meet and “learn to understand each other”. Mr Harris also said improvements could be made to the location, rather than hindrances, to support and develop the well-attended bar. “For safety, parking at the front could be improved and restricted to taxis, drop-off/pick-up zones and loading zones,” he said. “Clients can then more safely access a taxi without having to walk across or near the roundabout.” The matter is still with council.

Just not helpful IN REPLY to Peter Butler’s letter Dropping Hints, thankyou for drawing attention to the bat problem moving to the Sheraton. I have to say that we hope that this continues, and hopefully gets to Hastings Street, so that us “whingers" may be taken more seriously. It is interesting that, of the people who write in favour of the bats, e.g. Dylan White, none of them are living in the areas seriously affected. Maybe you should come and spend some serious time here so that you can see the real picture of living in a bat sanctuary, which was not there when we moved here seven years ago, and therefore make some more informed comments. You would see that, unlike Mr Butler, spending half an hour on one occasion cleaning up the mess, we spend around an hour a day cleaning mess off the walls, windows, pavers, paths, as well as the increased cost in water cleaning up, and the cost of replacing four gazebo covers so far. People with pools have to make extra efforts at extra expense to keep the pools swimmable, and vegetables from the garden have to be extremely well washed. We also have to keep our air-conditioner on every night to try to avoid the noise the bats make on their return, from waking us up. There are certainly many of us who will be looking to change councillors at the next election due to the total and utter lack of compassion or interest on behalf of “most" of the councillors, who are like a stuck record saying “there is nothing we can do" even though last year they said that something would definitely be done. It's long enough LITTLE is said about the referendum in March seeking four-year terms for future Queensland State governments. Under the Queensland Constitution there are two things the government cannot do without the approval of a referendum of the people; one is change the term of government; the other is the re-establishment of an Upper House. With the one house system now in Queensland, a bad government can be thrown out after three years. Good governments will likely be re-elected. An Upper House would help moderate any excesses of a longer term government. Politicians want the longer term, but is that good for citizens? I argue, the only valid case to increase the term of government is if the 'other referendum’ were also held concurrently - to re-introduce an Upper House and provide a check and balance on the longer term government. Wellington; Stymied all major progress to help Noosa live for next 10 years with no competition which by nature brings employment as people then shop locally. Cost ratepayers a fortune in legal fees for appeals to date and to come. Ensured money is spent outside by stopping jobs and development in Noosa. Wants NO growth. Now says the new councillors could get council running smoothly in two years. What have this last lot been doing? Kelly; Has maturity and experience as well as young enough with energy to be the one pounding the streets. Has a long list of things he did for Noosa of old, too long to enumerate here or the paper will not print them. Councillor 1985 to 2008. Considers all ratepayers, not just vested interests. Has the practical view that the world population is growing and others have as much right to come as those already here, so plan. Sustainable growth yes. Has proven he works with all levels of government. Noosa cannot live on tourists alone. Bolton; All I can say is she was on the last lot with Playford and as far as I am aware never opposed his mess. Down by the riverside I AM happy the Noosa Council has rejected an application for riverside night markets. Some space should be left alone for passive recreation of both residents and visitors. The “community benefit" already exists with open spaces, barbecues and covered areas for individuals and families. The “community costs" of night markets are disruption, noise, traffic chaos and rubbish, all of which impact negatively on local amenity. War on talent IT SEEMS such a shame that Noosa will lose a wealth of talent in the coming election no matter the result. If Tony Wellington succeeds we lose Sandy Bolton, who has shown an appetite for challenging issues and seems to have a great vision for Noosa. If Sandy Bolton wins then we lose many, many years of experience that Tony brings to the table. Both of them go if Ray Kelly gets up. Why can they not be running for mayor and also council? Function over form
TO K. Fielden and the poor benighted residents of Wallace Park. Let’s face it. You bought or built your houses in a flying fox habitat. Maybe the animals were not there when you moved in. Maybe you couldn’t believe you were getting a bargain because the vendor realised that there was a bat problem. Or maybe, you just didn’t do sufficient research prior to your purchase but I don’t remember holding a gun to your head and forcing you to make such a decision. So you can excuse me for wondering why I and every other ratepayer in the shire should pay for the council to take expensive and probably unproductive action to rid you of your bat problem. Like Steve Hall, I too live in a termite and cicada habitat but I am not constantly whining about having the council send men around with little tweezers to “disperse" the insects. Yeah, right. Like that would work. My advice? List your house on Airbnb as an “Eco Destination" where tourists can get up close and personal with what are arguably truly unique creatures. The grey-headed flying fox is found nowhere else in the world and I have seen overseas visitors standing outside the Noosa Library transfixed by the sight and sounds of these bats. Put in an observation deck and a few pairs of binoculars and you might be on to a great little earner. Then move somewhere more suited to your needs. Preferably somewhere with absolutely no wildlife. IF THE community wants a functional council, it needs to employ a mayor and six councillors who can work together to help manage the shire’s financial and natural assets. A pre-requisite for any candidate should be an understanding of the state-imposed constraints on council’s role in determining Noosa’s future. Cath Jones, Noosa.
An eye-opener THE recent Meet the Candidates night in Cooroy was a good opportunity for voters to sample the candidates' wares. A telling question was asked of all, “What do you think is your most outstanding achievement?” It caught many off-guard, including two of our mayoral candidates. Both Ray Kelly and Sandy Bolton waved their hands in the air and muttered vagaries. Tony Wellington stated unequivocally that it was his successful fight for the de-amalgamation of Noosa. As someone who was directly involved in this campaign, I know how very diligent Tony was in doing the heavy lifting to achieve de-amalgamation. The council candidates’ mettle was also quite well tested by this question. I was astounded when Elaine Williams claimed to have stopped the banning of horses from state parks. I am sure that Peter Wellington MP would also be flabbergasted by this statement. In 2005, he, myself and several others, met with the Minister and Director-General in charge of this policy, during Peter Beattie’s Premiership, to plead our case. Annie Wombran, a council worker, also amassed a catalogue if information disproving the DG’s claim that their decision was based on ‘scientific’ evidence. My request to see this evidence proved fruitless, as none existed. With other riders I met with a Minister at a subsequent Community Cabinet, explaining the safety issues associated with pushing riders out of parks. It was taken on board, and the measure did not go ahead. To claim this as your most outstanding achievement, by intimating that you did it unaided, when so many other people fought this battle, is disingenuous. Candidates must be very careful of what they say in public as many of us have long memories. Joy Ringrose, Pomona.

How sustainable? MOST of the candidates for the council elections seem to use 'Noosa’ and 'sustainability’ in the same sentence. Most of the electricity we use in this shire is generated by dirty coal-fired power stations in other shires. The cars we drive and the fuel they use come from somewhere else. Quizzing the candidates Noosa ratepayers want a few answers before they go to the polls to elect a new council on Saturday 19 March, so Noosa Today put a few questions to the candidates. Next week we will focus on the three squaring off in the mayoral race.

Steven Boyd 1. What qualifies you to represent the Noosa region on the new Noosa Council? I am a husband and father who loves living at Sunshine Beach. As a father I strive for fairness, honesty and inclusiveness. I am an active participant in community represented initiatives of the council. Since 2009, I have promoted the participation of Noosa as an active global member of UNESCO’s Man and Biosphere initiative. As chair of the original Noosa Biosphere Economic Sector Board I focused board attention on the sustainable development of Noosa, to conserve and preserve our shire for future generations. As a volunteer life saver I manage patrols and a ‘Nipper’ age group to ensure a safe and rewarding coastal experience. I am a Noosa business owner and work for the University of the Sunshine Coast where I coordinate courses in business, property and project management. My business leadership experience includes property funds management and university executive roles. As a researcher I know how to problem solve and base decisions on sound analysis. My qualifications include certificates, degrees and a doctorate relating to business and new approaches to education. 2. Are you affiliated with any community or political groups? If so, please list them below. I am an independent candidate without financial support from community or political groups. I have close associations with our wonderful council staff through my previous role as a director of the original biosphere and as a member of the 2015 Local Economic Plan Working Group. Last year, I became a member of the new Noosa Community Biosphere Association. Through surf lifesaving I am affiliated with Sunshine Beach SLSC. University affiliated professional associations relate to that role only. Further details are available through social media and the USC website. 3. Have you ever served on a council before? If so, which one and when? No, I have however served council as a director of the previous biosphere governance board (council-owned entity) and as a professional lifeguard. 4. If you are elected, will this be your full-time
job? If not, what is your profession? Yes, the role of councillor for Noosa Shire will be my full-time job. That said, I look to continue teaching project management and property economics. I have found the association with higher education, to benefit council projects as students provide a valuable resource to plan events and assist council staff. While I consider the two roles to be synergetic I am acutely aware that there will be items of business that may require disclosure to avoid conflict of interest. 5. Where do you live, and how long have you lived there? Sunshine Beach for nine years. 6. What are your two top policies/promises? Providing Noosa Shire businesses with appropriate world connectivity by bringing NBN fibre to all businesses. Rebirthing underutilised community assets as learning spaces supported by meaningful and diverse education programs delivered through revitalised and refitted learning hubs, including TAFE and our community halls.

Ken Coleman 1. What qualifies you to represent the Noosa region on the new Noosa Council? I have a broad background in a variety of areas, including rural issues, business interests, small business operations, and the concerns of bringing up a family. I am a grounded individual, with a common-sense attitude, willing to ask the questions that everyone wants answered. 2. Are you affiliated with any community or political groups? If so, please list them below. I have never been affiliated with any political party or community lobby group. I don’t believe that political parties or pressure groups have any place in Local Government. I am staunchly Independent, and will consider every decision on its merits. 3. Have you ever served on a council before? If so, which one and when? No. 4. If you are elected, will this be your full-time job? If not, what is your profession? I believe that serving on council requires my full commitment to the voters and the shire. It will be my full-time job.
5. Where do you live, and how long have you lived there? I have lived in Noosa Shire for over 22 years, and in Tewantin for the last nine years. 6. What are your two top policies/promises? To bring a progressive vision to Noosa Council, so small business and working people see hope in their future and to encourage the hinterland and areas outside Noosa Heads to come into their own as areas of growth and innovation.
Mark Denham 1. What qualifies you to represent the Noosa region on the new Noosa Council? My 37-plus years of public service to communities of Queensland with 26 years in Noosa, a small business owner since 1997, passionate about local council process, passionate about local sustainability, keeping the Noosa idyllic lifestyle, but grow and improve all types of businesses in the area so locals have jobs and the financial stability of the area grows. Extensive knowledge of the available health services in the Noosa area, and will work with the State Government to ensure the future supply of hospital services in Noosa, with the future growth of these service to effect local supply of services not currently available. 2. Are you affiliated with any community or political groups? If so, please list them below. I have worked with Katie Rose cottage to assist in raising operating funds, Noosa Local ambulance committee to bring much-needed emergency equipment to the local area, was the ambulance representative on the Noosa counter disaster committee 1992/4, local first aid educator 1992-2009, commissioner of declarations since 1987, Labor candidate 2015 state election, and current Labor Party member, but not endorsed by the Labor Party in this local council election. 3. Have you ever served on a council before? If so, which one and when? No, I believe there needs to be new people in the council without preconceived notions and past possible misdirection from previous council involvements.

4. If you are elected, will this be your full-time job? If not, what is your profession? I am an Advanced Care Paramedic with the Queensland Ambulance Service and have been stationed in Noosa for 26 years with a career spanning almost 38 years. I will continue to be an ambo, as well as a councillor, if elected. I believe in a balanced life and working for the local community as a paramedic and a councillor will give me far better insight than just as a councillor. 5. Where do you live, and how long have you lived there? I have lived in Cooroibah for almost 16 years, I have also lived in Tewantin, Noosa Heads, Marcus Beach and Sunrise Beach since I came to the Noosa area in 1989. 6. What are your two top policies/promises? I will work to ensure Noosa Council keeps Noosa moving forward by ensuring council’s capital works, maintenance and improvement programs timeframes are met and that we have the right balance of council employees and resources to make this happen. Working for the entire area of Noosa Council, it’s not all about one street and a few beaches. I will work to assist in the growth of all sizes of local business in the Noosa area to improve job prospects for locals and reduce unemployment, I will also work with the next two levels of government, State and Federal, to gain in their assistance in this project for a better overall outcome.

I have experience working for local government as an engineering officer for Moreton Bay Regional Council, and I’ve lived in Tewantin Noosa for 32 years. I was lucky enough to spend my childhood here and have local knowledge that only comes from growing up in the area. But those are not the only reasons I’m campaigning to be a councillor. I have many friends, talented people, who have moved to the shire and contributed tremendously the region. What qualifies me to represent the Noosa region on the new Noosa Council is my enthusiasm to take Noosa forward, to move with the times, and be a voice for the locals and what they want. A key task of the new council will be to take a consultative approach to developing a new Noosa Plan which, among many other things, will review zoning, traffic and the requirements of different parts of the shire. I’m committed to addressing the community’s needs by listening, consulting and acting decisively to implement policies and decisions which embody community values and priorities. I believe being an effective councillor is about being on the community’s side. And I most certainly am.
Joe Jurisevic 6. What are your two top policies/promises? I will be a councillor who is thinking of Noosa and its future, with a smart town planning scheme that all 58,000 of us are happy with. The next Noosa Council will not be putting up barriers and rolling out more red tape. It will be a council that actively wants to promote the Noosa brand. A councillor that creates jobs and stands up for business needs. Council must pro-actively work with all 7000 businesses in the shire.

I’m working to make a difference for Noosa’s community, economy and environment as a board member of the Noosa Chamber of Commerce and secretary of the Noosa Parks Association where I have a track record of assisting people and community groups to achieve their goals. My career experience has been as a senior manager and then a consultant managing my own firm in human resources, executive development and communications. I have worked with organisations like the NSW Premier’s Department, Westpac, David Jones, NSW Public Works, the Department of Foreign Affairs, Elders, Sydney Water and the Commonwealth Bank. 2. Are you affiliated with any community or political groups? If so, please list them below. I am a completely independent candidate and not affiliated with any political party or grouping. In my private life, I am a member of Cooroy Area Residents Association, Noosa Chamber of Commerce (CCIQ Noosa), Noosa Community Biosphere Association, Noosa and District Landcare, Noosa Parks Association, Noosa Residents and Ratepayers Association, Peregian Beach Community Association, and the Sunshine Beach Surf Club. 3. No, but I have relevant experience having managed national and statewide programs for water and electricity utilities, banking, retail and agribusiness. I also have experience in what is sometimes called the ‘fourth tier of government’ as chairperson, secretary and treasurer of body corporates. I led a multimillion dollar apartment tower transformation in Sydney and I have chaired the Sun Lagoon resort in Noosa for eight years. 4. If you are elected, will this be your fulltime job? If not, what is your profession? Being a councillor will be my full-time job. In fact my recent activity as an observer at council meetings and other forums convinces me that it will be more than a full-time job.

Where do you live, and how long have you lived there? I live in Tewantin and have lived here for 16 years. 6. What are your two top policies/promises? I will continue to focus on opportunities for enhancing waste management and resource recovery activities by the council, looking to ensure that council maximises recycling opportunities for business, events and in public spaces in keeping with the council’s Towards Zero Waste policy. I will work towards a proposal for a Material Resource Recovery facility in the shire and enhanced resource recovery facilities at Eumundi Road and in our hinterland towns to minimise saleable goods and resources going to landfill, which will provide job opportunities in the region. Enhanced public transport in the shire. The trial of Queensland’s first electric bus in Noosa once again shows the types of initiates that Noosa can deliver, together with services such as the free holiday buses, are opportunities to work with the State Government on further public transport initiatives to make it a more attractive and viable alternative to congested roads and the need to overcome an ever increasing demand for parking spaces in the Noosa region.
My extensive local and state government experience and ability to form effective government, industry and community partnerships has been acknowledged nationally. While the recognition is for the hard work of many involved, the organisations I have worked with have received numerous regional, state and national awards for strategies I have devised and helped implement. Before starting my own consultancy I rose to senior management as the Sunshine Coast regional director for the Department of Employment Economic Development and Innovation. I have qualifications in geography, planning, natural resource management, sustainable agriculture and a PhD focused on how to achieve sustainable futures for coastal catchments like Noosa. 2. I am currently serving the community as a councillor in the first term of the Noosa Council since it was reformed on 1 January 2014. I am the community advocate for Clean Up Australia Day, waste management improvements and anti-litter and illegal dumping campaigner for many years. I successfully campaigned for Main Roads to clean up the hazardous waste at the Pomona Truck Stop and for improved truck stop facilities with the Bruce Highway upgrade. I initiated the SOS Sunshine Clubs forum in a stand for over 60 not-for-profit organisations across the Sunshine Coast against excessive Unity Water charges and was successful in having Sunshine Coast Council acknowledge and meet their community service obligation. Noosa Council will now be introducing water rebates for community organisations as part of their restructure of the community grants program. I represented the Noosa Residents and Ratepayers Association before the State Parliamentary Committee hearing for Sustainable Planning and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2012 and I am actively engaged across a range of activities in our community through involvement with sport, arts, environment, youth and community organisations. 2. Business - I would see the council be a leader in business development and utilise the resources we already have to the greater benefit of the community and to increase cashflow. An example is to consider moving the council offices, which have a beautiful view, to the old TAFE building. This means the council could pay a cheaper rent and the old council chambers can be leased out or turned into a venue creating greater cash flow. Transport - Let’s get serious about what’s possible and what is at our disposal. An idea could be to introduce a ride-sharing network, where people car-pool, which could lessen the burden on roads. The current IT businesses in the area could help to build technology to support the network such as an app.
Brian Stockwell 1. What qualifies you to represent the Noosa region on the new Noosa Council? I’ve lived in the Noosa district for 35 years and have been involved in community endeavours and have a long-standing commitment to protecting our landscapes, lifestyles and livelihoods.
I’m not affiliated with any political group and I am standing as a guaranteed independent. I am not related to any developer. I am the president of the Noosa Shire Residents and Ratepayers, vice-president of the Noosa Lions Football Club and Leader of the Noosa Sea Scout Group. I am also a member of Country Noosa Inc. and the Noosa Community Biosphere Association. I am a founding member of Noosa and District Landcare. 3. Have you ever served on a council before? If so, which one and when? I was a rural Noosa councillor between 1988 and 1991. This council reduced the maximum height of buildings to four storeys, rejected the massive international resort on the North Shore with its associated bridge and airport. I personally initiated the Noosa Trail network. 4. If you are elected, will this be your full-time job? If not, what is your profession? I will be a full-time councillor, but will continue to lecture in geography and planning at the University of the Sunshine Coast for approximately eight hours per week. I have my own strategic environmental planning and sustainable agriculture consultancy ‘Watershed Australia’. If elected I will not pursue further contracts. 5. Where do you live, and how long have you lived there? I have a teenage son attending Sunshine Beach High and moved close to there from Mt Tinbeerwah about two years ago. I am planning on moving back there when he finishes school next year. 6. What are your two top policies/promises? To lead the review of the Noosa Plan to create flexibility in commercial, industrial and rural zones to foster innovation and the mix of enterprises possible in a next generation economy. On the coast we need a vibrant street-culture to attract young entrepreneurs and the digital economy. We also need to protect the rural amenity and maintain the landscape for sustainable free range forms of farming. I will move to ban factory farming. Form active partnerships with community groups, industry, council and government to better manage the Noosa River and better support our volunteers in Bushcare and Landcare.

I have a proven track record as a Noosa councillor and a few examples of this are some of the projects I’ve championed such as the construction of The J, the street scaping of Tewantin, and introducing the Biosphere concept. 2. I am one of the current Noosa councillors and also served on the previous Noosa Council from 1997 to 2008 which included a period where I was deputy mayor under Bob Abbot. 4. If you are elected, will this be your fulltime job? If not, what is your profession? Being a councillor is definitely a full-time job. I do have other business interests also. You can find me most Sundays at the Noosa Farmers’ Market which is one of my business endeavours. I’m a seven-day a week worker and passionate about small business so I’m also currently looking at investing in a couple of possible small business partnership ventures which will create even more jobs for our region. 5. Where do you live, and how long have you lived there? I have lived in the Tewantin and North Shore district for 36 years and love it! 6. What are your two top policies/promises? My top two policy promises are: Upgrade our roads throughout the shire including pedestrian access - we have to upgrade many of our roads as they are not up to standard in my books and if these issues aren’t addressed they compound so we have to make it a priority. It goes further than just upgrading roads, we also need to improve our footpaths so that they all join up to enable people to get from one place to another. Diversifying our economy - we can achieve this for Noosa via the Noosa Economic Plan and through leveraging our existing Noosa brand while partnering with the business community, Chambers of Commerce, State and Federal governments. We need to develop alternative economies so we aren’t solely reliant on tourism. We need to increase the focus on areas such as smart and creative industries, farming and value adding. Diversifying our economy makes sense, it provides a more stable economy, brings more dollars into our region and ultimately will result in more jobs. Mark Rodriquez

My local knowledge and experience as a Noosa taxi driver for the past 12 years has given me a broad overview of what concerns both locals and tourists. I will work to extend the methods by which the council communicates and engages with residents by researching further options for consultation such as community information hubs, where assistance can be provided for people who are unable to use or don’t have access to a computer, phone surveys, and as a last resort, more use of snail mail to allow us to fully consult all residents on important matters; especially our increasing ageing population and those with poor internet access. To solve our traffic and parking woes I propose we continue to increase our cycling infrastructure, investigate the feasibility of greatly increasing water transport, provide more parkand-ride facilities with greater public awareness campaigns, look at the issues around holiday parking at the Lions Park, provide long-term large locker storage near the beach and look into providing subterranean and architecturally appealing low rise parking. There could be a range of private enterprise, council and public funding options for all of these.
in the next council, I believe a representative with integrity and a comprehensive understanding of planning is vital to ensure any amendments are carefully considered. We must maintain our building height limits and continue to protect farming areas and hinterland villages from inappropriate development. This is particularly important for future sustainability and to diversify our tourism sector into the Hinterland. Carbon Neutral Noosa by 2025! - I have a policy for the council to investigate how we can transition to an integrated, renewable, energy-efficient economy, with rooftop solar on council buildings and car parks, biomass/waste power generation, business incentives for solar and more energy efficient transport e.g. electric council vehicles and buses recharged with our solar. I support partnering with State Government to upgrade Beckman’s Road and the Myall Street intersection at Cooroy to improve traffic efficiency. I plan to table a motion directing the council to begin a feasibility study into how councilowned buildings can install solar and consider a low impact, small-scale solar facility in the shire. Councils across Australia are going solar and with the Federal Government recently offering $250 million to councils for renewables, Noosa’s in a great position to capitalise on this opportunity. The business case for solar power in sunny Noosa is undeniable. Numerous community organisations like the Tewantin RSL, resorts and businesses such as Page Furnishers at Pomona have all gone solar.

I’m a long-time local with a passion for the whole of Noosa and our community and have a proven ability to enrich our local community through educational, commercial, sporting, not-for-profit and environment related events and activities. 2. I am not affiliated with any political groups, however my affiliation with community and sporting groups are as follows: I have volunteered for the Queensland Justice Department for many years. I am a longterm member of the Cooroy Scout Group and have volunteered in the capacity of secretary, Cub Scout Leader, Leader of Adults (Group Leader) and Personal Leader Advisor. I am a full sailing member and sailing committee member with Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club (affiliated with Yachting Queensland). 3. Have you ever served on a council before? If so, which one and when? I have not yet served on a council but I am very confident in my abilities to do so and work hard for our community. I have served and continue to serve on committees, in team problem solving and team sporting environments. Yes. Being an active, dedicated and energetic councillor will be my full time job. I currently have a regular job and have always been employed or self-employed, so understand clearly the challenges of making ends meet and working long hours. 5. Where do you live, and how long have you lived there? I have lived in the Noosa Shire since 1987. 6. What are your two top policies/promises? My top level policy is to build a sustainable future for Noosa and comprises all the specific sub-policies which include, but are not limited to, “rates” and “roads”. These are two of the three day-to-day fundamental issues (along with rubbish) that our council must keep in focus. It is absolutely essential that our cost of living is as affordable as possible for everyone in the Noosa Shire and this is heavily influenced by our rates. To achieve this, I will work hard to maintain a financially, socially and ethically responsible, balanced budget in collaboration with my fellow councillors and staff. It is of course vital to utilise our rates for their true purpose which is to effectively and pro-ctively maintain, develop and deliver high quality community infrastructure and services. Traffic volume and congestion has increased markedly over the past 20 years, so it is particularly important that the decisions we make now will serve us well for the next 20. I will work with my colleagues to lobby State and Federal governments as appropriate to correct the trouble spots such as the Myall Street and Diamond Street intersections, Beckman’s Road and the notorious single lane bridge over the 6 mile near Cooran.

But as confident as you may be, it is important to know your limits and recognise the right time to hire a professional. With the success of renovation television shows, DIY has become increasingly popular and statistics show there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight to home renovations. According to Mater Builders Queensland, renovations have been trending up with an increase of more than 5000 during the 2014/15 financial year, with the figure topping 57,000. Master Builders executive director Grant Galvin said when deciding whether to do a job yourself or call in the experts, determining the value of the work is the first place to start. “If the value of the work exceeds $3300 then it must be carried out by a licensed contractor,” Mr Galvin said. “This is why it is so important to follow
the correct processes for approvals, inspections and general building requirements if you are completing the work yourself. “Even though DIY might save you money on the renovation, any bad workmanship could negatively affect the resale price as savvy buyers will ask to see inspection records.” Once the legal side of all DIY work has been considered, it is time to address any potential safety risks involved. As a rule, Master Builders advises home owners to never do their own electrical or plumbing work as it is generally against the law to do so. The same advice applies to any asbestos removal required. According to Master Builders Queensland, when renovating over a short period of time it can be tempting to cut corners in order to get the job done. This presents a myriad of potential problems which can often cost more time and money in the long-run than it would to hire a qualified tradesperson from the beginning.

Sounds worthy of repeating SUNSHINE Coast’s very own powerhouse rock band Mantra are ready to rock the roof off the Tewantin Noosa RSL next month. Mantra will get your bones shaking and hearts pumping with their amazing distinctive guitar riffs and catchy and melodic original songs.
With influences from U2, Cold Play, AC/DC, Screaming Jets and The Beatles, just to name a few, Mantra are going all the way to the top and will let nothing stand in their way. Mantra are set to drop their debut album Power of Sound – recorded and produced by Daniel Jones from Savage Garden and mastered in one of

All paraded with pride GLAMOROUS pooches will take centre stage in the Pride Paws Parade as part of the Pride Fair Day at Eumundi Markets on Saturday 27 February. The Pride Fair Day is a flagship event of the three-day Sunshine Coast Pride Festival which takes place between 26 and 28 February this year. Eumundi Market spokesman Craig Walter said all dogs and their parents from across the whole Sunshine Coast community are invited to take part in the Pride Paws Parade and registration is free. “We’ll have prizes and awards on offer for the most glamorous pride pooch, best pride parent look-alike, and best rainbow pride pooch,” he said. “We can guarantee good times and lots of laughs, and cannot wait to see the outfits and doggy bling on display.”

The hub of the festivities will be the Eumundi Amphitheatre and will be hosted by renowned drag queen Monica Fusions who is sure to add a splash of colour, pizzazz and fabulousness. There is also an additional performance space which will be set up in the centre of the markets and will be hosted by Sunshine Coast’s very own drag queen Melony Brests. The day promises fun for
all the family with a Kids Zone, tug-o-war and a diverse line-up of entertainment for the whole family. “It’s a day of fun, great music, big laughs and getting together against the backdrop of the Eumundi Markets, home of the best artisan retail therapy on the planet,” Craig said. THE Noosa Boathouse is holding its fourth annual outdoor River Festival on the Boathouse lawn with fantastic live music, street food, beer and wine. On Sunday 28 February from 3pm to 8pm, the Noosa River shores will come to life with the Noosa Boathouse Stone and Wood Summer River Festival. Sean Fitzgerald from East of Eden will kick off at 3pm with chilled out tunes, followed by Sunshine Coast Music legend
Carl Wockner from 5pm. Along with chilled out sunset tunes by the river, there will be Stone and Wood Craft Beers, wine, street food, fish and chips, Wolff Coffee, Donut Boyz and Frozen Sunshine Ice Blocks available. Noosa Boathouse owner Phil Bradford said the festival follows one of Noosa’s best summer seasons. “It’s a chance for people to relax, unwind and make the most of this fantastic warm weather and enjoy one of our
best assets – the Noosa River,” Mr Bradford said. Mr Bradford encouraged people to bring their family and friends down to enjoy the atmosphere, entertainment and sunset on the river. The festival is free of charge, although optional donations can be made to Sunshine Butterflies Charity at the entrance. Head down to the Boathouse lawn at 194 Gympie Terrace, Noosaville, from 3pm, to enjoy the summer festivities.

THE headline ‘Creator of controversy and the nation's boxing heroes’ basically laid out the life of the always colourful Arthur Tunstall. The 93-year-old administrator finally met his match after a tough two years since the passing of his ever-loving wife Peggy. Arthur was long regarded as the doyen of volunteer sports administrators after first joining NSW Amateur Boxing over 50 years ago. Holding numerous positions, he moved up to Commonwealth and Olympic Games at administration, coaching, referring and judging. He became the world vice-president of amateur boxing and technical delegate and boss of the 1988, '92 and '96
Olympic boxing competitions. Arthur was team manager of the 1960 Rome Games, and was in the corner of Australian Tony Madigan who lost a close decision to then Cassius Clay - later known as Muhammad Ali. He was also in my corner for the Moscow Games, and despite having no personal ring experience, didn’t do too bad a job. Australian Olympic Committee president John Coates said it all: "He was at the forefront of the old school of voluntary sports administrators who did so much to create the Australian sports industry as we know it today". Sadly Arthur, is also going to be remembered for some of the things he did and said during his time at the helm. I suppose the most infamous, was the dust up with Cathy Freeman over her bold statement and actions during the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, Canada. I am sure you all remember the
flag incident, that saw the young Mackay sprinter carry the Indigenous flag during her victory lap. Arthur’s instruction as team manager was clear: "... through their superiors before the Games, that they were representing one country, under one flag". And the Indigenous flag shouldn’t have been there at all. He also had a shot at disabled athletes at the same Games, saying he "wasn’t impressed", suggesting they were an embarrassment being seen competing with able-bodied athletes. He wasn’t finished - in 1997 he had a crack at beach volleyballers: "You see two girls in nice little bikini costumes flopping themselves around and that’s good for television". Let me take you back to the Mr Tunstall I knew. I had the pleasure of first meeting Arthur at my first ever international fight in Noumea in 1972. It was to be my fourth
fight, and I was supposed to be matched against an opponent of the same level of ability. I called him Mr Tunstall in those days, as he ruled the sport and it wasn’t a smart move to argue with him, he was always right. Weighed in OK, my opponent was pointed out to me, off for a sleep so all good so far. It was only when walking down to the venue for the night’s proceedings, that Art called me aside to say, "hey mate, there’s been change in the fights, you’ll be fighting another local". I asked was he any good, the answer "no mate, only a beginner like you". After being knocked down four times, the ref stopped the fight. It was only while sitting in the dressing room that I found out my opponent was the French Middleweight Champion. Thanks Arthur, until next time

LETTERS Getting cross I REFER to Michael Shaw’s letter (NT, 18 February) regarding the need for a safe pedestrian crossing on Eumundi-Noosa Road at Noosaville. Forget an expensive overpass or underpass. It would take years to get either of these. An overpass would need to be fairly elaborate to cater for disabled people and would be bit of an eyesore. What is wrong with an old-fashioned zebra crossing? It would not be very expensive and could be installed within a couple of days. A bit of white paint for the zebra crossing on the road, removal of a small section of the raised median strip, lowering of the kerbs on either side and a couple of signs to warn approaching motorists of the crossing. All done for a tiny fraction of the cost of an overpass or underpass. A few friends of mine, who work for Noosa Council have mentioned that the working conditions are the worst they have ever been. Since de-amalgamation this council has sacked close to 100 employees! This has put a lot of pres-

This is a far cry from what Mr Playford and his current councillors claim, that everything is rosy within the council and that their finances are on track. This council is broke, and if you don’t believe me, ask some of the bitumen contractors on the coast, they will tell you that the Noosa Council is the only one in Queensland requesting only two inches of bitumen instead of the standard four! Winston slams home in Fiji brine PHIL JARRATT
JUST last week I was commenting on how well the planets were aligning for swell events in the Coral Sea and near Pacific in the coming weeks, then pow! In comes Cyclone Winston, smashing poor little Fiji last weekend. Knowing that the worst was expected to hit overnight on Saturday, I checked social media for messages even before I checked the surf cams last Sunday morning. Word from Mandy and Scottie O’Connor on Namotu that they’d been slammed but were OK. Nothing from Jon Roseman on Tavarua, but I assumed that just across the strait they’d be OK too. Not so great on the northern part of Viti Levu, where five people died and villages were decimated when one of the most brutal weather events ever felt in the South Pacific – winds of 240 kilometres for hours on end slammed them mercilessly. I imagine many readers will be familiar with the beautiful islands of Fiji, just four hours flying from here, but if you aren’t let me say that it is one of those places of the heart. You go there once and you are forever attached. Sure, it has its problems, such as across-the-board corruption and constant conflict between the Indian merchant class and the dispos-
sessed native people, but at village and community level there is such a warm and welcoming vibe that I often wonder why I haven’t spent more time there over the 35 years since my first visit. As far as the surf is concerned, I’ve enjoyed more good waves in Indonesia, but the very best sessions in my life have been in Fiji. Absolute gems at Cloudbreak and Restaurants, plus super fun times at Namotu Lefts and Swimming Pools. We were all there for the Millenium, first to ride a wave in the new century. And most of us did, hangovers and all, except the late, great Miki Dora, who hid under his bed, convinced that the Millenium Bug was going to end the world (and Miki’s ended soon enough, two years later.) And Kelly Slater Week on Tavarua, where a few of us lucky souls not only got to watch the king at play in perfection, but to share a few waves with him. So as we waited for more news on the damage front, I phoned my friends Shaun and Carol Cairns, who had only recently returned from a wonderful vacation at Terry and Gill Cairns’ island hideaway. They were concerned not just for the house but for the surrounding villagers because, like everywhere in Fiji, these neighbours had become firm and lasting friends. Well, as I write, we still don’t know about the fate of the house, or the people, but the worst seems to have passed. In fact, by the time you read this, we’ll no doubt be enjoy-
ing a beautiful ground swell off the back of Winston. As you slide into a good one, please spare a thought for our friends just across the sea, mopping up the mess and trying to put the pieces back together. A night at the library Here’s cheers to our Noosa Library Service for putting on another fun night of surfing entertainment last week. Sadly the thunderheads popped up on the horizon just at the wrong end of the afternoon, and the Starry Nights outdoor screening of the Noosa Surf Festival documentary, 8 Days of Pure Stoke, had to be moved indoors, but the move did nothing to diminish the good spirits of the library staff, nor of the almostfull house who braved the threat of a storm and gave the chat show and films a rowdy thumbs up. The crowd was also treated to a sneak preview of the new film I’ve been working on with Panga Productions, Men of Wood and Foam, and to some epic big wave footage from the recent “Jaws” swells in Hawaii by film-maker Greg Huglin. For the aficionados and surfboard tragics, Wood and Foam will get another screening at the Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing on Sunday 6 March, just after dark on the beach screen, in the presence of many of the grand old men of the industry, including Bill Wallace, Barry Bennett, Denny Keogh and Joe Larkin. While I was signing Cup of Tea With God books at the library the other night, a wiry surf dude of similar vintage came up and introduced himself. It was surfer/photographer Ian Ingram, whose expression I stole for the title of the Noosa National Surfing Reserve book, a “loan” that hopefully falls short of outright plagiarism. The comment, “Surfing National
Park Noosa at six feet would be like having a cup of tea with God”, is often attributed to Bob McTavish, but in fact it was coined by Ian, then a Canberra-based surf nazi, for a magazine article in 1966. Ian’s a good sport about it, and I’m currently enjoying his own book about the times, Capital Surfers: Surfing Australia’s East Coast in the Sixties, available at Annie’s Books, Peregian.

AFTER the recent fresh, it’s definitely time to pop those crab pots out in the river and give them a good old soak. Now fresh bait is the key to catching a good buck! Also bait your pots heavy if you’re leaving them in overnight. It’s also a good idea to check up on the quality of your crab pots making sure to erect them first before going crabbing, the one thing that you want to check over is the entry holes into the pot. Live bait fishing is arguably the best way to target bigger predatory fish, with that recent fresh we should see another good run of river prawns working their way through the system which in turn will help fishing as a whole.

There have been some cracking flathead in the Noosa River lately with fish up to 80cm not uncommon. Try concentrating your time up towards Lake Weyba. Drifting live baits as well as froggies and whitebait can see some good success. Offshore; there have been the odd small windows of opportunity to make a run outside with Spanish mackerel making a healthy appearance off the coastal waters. The hot spots are North, Chardons and wide Sunshine Reef systems. Firstly, find the fish by trolling deep diving hardbodies then once you hook up try grabbing a couple

The Wednesday final of the Championship Fours was a great tussle between the reigning 2015 champions and a team determined to win. The team of Elizabeth Dewhirst, Gail Alford (new bowler), Linda McDougall and skipper Veronis O’Connor was triumphant in beating Jeanne Price, Desley O’Neill, Gaye Bible and Tina Camp. Social game winners were Julanne Brown and Don Mallett. A round of the men’s A singles was played with Greg Hodder defeating Charlie Dewhirst. Thursday - A singles round with Glenn Patterson defeating Keith Muir while in the first B grade semifinal Don Mallett defeated John Davies. Friday twilight bowls winners
were Sharon Foale and John Davies with runners up Bill Schutt and Veronis O’Connor. Saturday Hinterland League once again proved a winner for the Pomona ladies and men’s teams. The ladies played Nambour Heights and the pairs team of Veronis O’Connor and Fay Beadnell had a good win of +6 while the triples with Sharon Foale, Gaye Bible and Jocelyn Rabjohns went down by -1 giving the ladies an overall win of +5 and 2 game points. The men’s team played Mapleton with a mixed result but overall had a team win earning them 3 points. The triples skipped by Mel Hobbins went down by -1; the pairs of Daryl Millar and Bob Andrews had a convincing win of 35-10 and the pairs of Bill Alford and Don Mallett had a close win. The fours team lead by Russell Murray only went down 16-19. The Sunday B grade semi-final saw Bob Andrews defeat Russell Murray 25-22 and what a great game it was to watch. They were neck and neck in the business end of the game with Bob
prevailing in the last two ends to take the win. The B Finals Championship game is between Bob Andrews and Don Mallett on 19 March 2016. TEWANTIN NOOSA BOWLS CLUB Super-challenge Saturday Men’s Silver lost 2/3 to Musgrave Hill and the ladies lost on both rinks. The Bronze was successful against Bongaree with the men winning 3/2 and the ladies having another overall win. However Sunday’s ‘reconvened’ game against Solander Lakes saw the men lose 2/3 and the ladies too had previously not been successful. Long climb for gold FORMER Sunshine Beach resident Hannah Every-Hall has her sights set on Olympic Gold. Hannah, who now rows out of the Canberra Rowing Club, has once again been selected in the Australian team to contest the Olympic qualifying regatta in Lucerne and the world cup events in Lucerne and Poznan, Poland. Successful qualification at Lucerne will mean that she will contest the women’s lightweight double scull at the Rio Olympics. Hannah left her much-loved Sunshine Beach home in 2010 to row at the Australian Institute of Sport and won two world championships in the early years of the century. In 2012 Hannah was selected to compete in the lightweight women’s double for Australia in the London Olympics where they finished fifth in the final. Although Hannah now lives in Canberra she maintains a close contact with the local Lake Macdonald Rowing Club, of which she is a member.

THIS weekend sees the much awaited return to Noosa Rugby League at Pirate Park. After being reappointed as a solo club for the coming 2016 season, the Pirates are set to kick off again this Saturday afternoon at Pirate Park. The Under 18s kick proceedings off at 3pm with a trial against the Caloundra Sharks, with many of the successful Youth Cup team of 2015 on show. At 6pm the Noosa Pirates take to the field against a team from Inala West and with positions at stake for the coming season all players will be keen to succeed. In between these games the annual Sam Richter Memorial Game will be contested. On previous occasions this game has been played between Noosa and Pomona. A change in this year’s game sees a different, some may say a slightly intimidating, opponent. For the first time in many years fans will witness Noosa playing Noosa Old Boys. With names such as Christensen, Knowles, Payne, Smith and company taking the field once again Rugby league fans are sure to be in for a treat. The game represents the coming together of all pirates to remember Sam who was a dedicated Pirate and who passed away too early. With canteen facilities open and the bar stocked to the brim, it is sure to be a day to remember. IT CERTAINLY was a big weekend for our lifesavers all along the Queensland coast with big seas keeping patrols on their toes. Happy to note no major problems reported. At Sunshine Beach, club President Craig Law said, ‘’We had good crowds but the big surf made the crowds cautious; the people stayed close to the water’s edge.’’ Noosa, being a protected beach, had good conditions with just a metre wave, which made conditions ideal for the families. For the Noosa club, Sunday was one of the most eagerly awaited days of the season, for at 9am the
gun was fired to start the Annual Shirley Strachan Memorial Swim. This swim, now in its thirteenth year, was perhaps the biggest with 94 members; starting at 13 years. In the words of Surf Sports Director Peter French: “This would have to be perhaps the best ever with over 90 entrants and great conditions, plus perfect weather, we couldn’t ask for more. As usual it was run and organised by Bruce and Sandy Warren and we all agree they did a tremendous job.” The swim, which is over a distance of 1.5km, starts in Little Cove, turns left across the bay, then back to the beach and up to the finishing line to the left of the Noosa clubhouse. In keeping with his form for the season first home was Cooper Williams, second Jasper Outram and third Bailey Williams.
In the ladies division Lana Rogers was first, Electra Outram second and Courtney Bryant finished in third place. Water safety officer Joe Cirello, who for several years has driven one of the IRB patrol boats covering the swimmers said: “From our position it was a great swim and the overall performance was really good, definitely one of the best.” This event which is under the major sponsorship of John McDermott-McDermott Aviation has done wonders to lift and maintain the standard of swimming within the club. The two major factors that have made this event a success are the continued major sponsorship of McDermott Aviation and the loyalty and dedication of organisers Bruce and Sandy Warren. With so much of the patrol work now being vehicle driven, to still maintain
a high standard of swimming and fitness is of the utmost importance. Bruce, a former endurance swimmer, and since 1969 a qualified swim coach, joined Noosa in 1998. With his background and experience and ably supported by wife Sandy, he is the ideal man to control and supervise this event; to both these people, and John McDermott many, thanks. Also thanks to other sponsors USMs Brian Clancy, Noosa Trophy and Engraving, Supporter Club and Restaurant and Golden Breed; without these people this important event wouldn’t be possible. On the weekend Sunshine Beach and Noosa travelled to Mermaid Beach on the Gold Coast to contest the Queensland Championships in Champion Life Saver, Patrol Competition and First Aid. These
events are the backbone of basic lifesaving so it is very important for the youth to be involved; the age groups consisted of Under 14, 15 and 17. For Sunshine in the Champion Life Saver they won gold in Under 15 and 19, plus two silver and a bronze; in the Under 15 patrol competition they won gold. Noosa was also amongst the medals with gold in Under 14 champion lifesaver and silver in Under 15 patrol competition. In First Aid Noosa won silver in Under 15 and a bronze in Under 17. Well done to our youth. In the boat section of the Interstate Series at Shellharbour, Noosa, representing Queensland, finished third overall. For a relatively new crew up against the more experienced southerners, this was a good effort.
Off to Russia, with punch By RON LANE FOR the proprietor and coach of the Impact Boxing Academy at Cooroy, Mark Evans, the first amateur boxing tournament of the year held at the Beenleigh Tavern was just the start of things to come. "With 47 bouts, it is indeed promising for the year ahead. For our first tournament it was well attended and this was indeed very encouraging,’’ Mark said. However, starting the year with a successful program was just the beginning. For not only has Mark been appointed President of Boxing Queensland, but has also been named as Queensland Talent Identification Coach by Boxing Australia. Mark will do a great job, he is very passionate about things and this is good for boxing. We wish him well.” To ensure that the sport has goals that are attractive to the young, Mark and his people are discussing potential projects such as creating more development programs and more training camps, thus creating a pathway for the athletes to follow. Regarding tournaments, many are aiming to be part of the North Queensland Games in June, and following this Coral Sea Games in Cairns. These would involve all Oceanic countries.

With these concepts on the drawing board the importance of sponsorship cannot be emphasised enough. The opportunities for the club's young boxers are indeed a reality. In three weeks’ time, Mark Evans, with fighters Sam Cameron-Hands and Bailey Seabourne, will fly to Anapa in Russia to take part in a big
international invitation tournament; just one example of what can be achieved through the sport of amateur boxing. As preparation for their trip to Russia, Cameron-Hands and Seabourne used the Beenleigh tournament as warm-up fights with both lads recording good wins. Good luck to all.
